New monitor reduces 24-hour blood pressure wait Patients at Cromer surgery should have a shorter wait for round-the-clock blood pressure monitoring. Thanks to fundraising group an extra 24-hour monitoring unit has been bought by the Patients’ Participation Group (PPG).
Successful fundraising in 2018 has already bought a £1000 blood pressure checking machine for the reception area.
Health care assistant Tracey Mathews said the £980 24-hour monitor would enable patients with erratic blood pressure to be checked away from the surgery, where people can show higher readings during visits. Continued on page 4...

Dear Margaret,
Another Christmas has come and gone. As usual, there was a beautiful Christmas tree with colourful lights displayed in the churchyard. On the night of the Christmas lights switch-on the ceremony as spectacular. It was overwhelming to see the crowd gathering in the cold winter night to watch the procession. I felt something missing on that Christmas tree, which was the whole community under one tree. My thought was at once it would be nice to see the congregation and whole community together, dressing the Christmas tree with their feelings, thoughts and memories as a single ornament which symbolized to each family. That decorative tree can bring the whole community together by recognising each other's feelings and memories and helping each and every one. After all, the Christmas season cannot be festive without the community. Francesca Nevins, Cromer Cromer Times 558 February 2nd 2019
Friends of Cromer Museum
Even though Cromer Museum is closed for its winter break the work of the Friends and staff goes on and our talks programme for 2019 began with a presentation – in full costume as Sir John Paston – by Dr Rob Knee of the Paston Society. His topic was the Paston family and the Wars of the Roses.

School’s new recycling scheme is plastic fantastic
Pupils at a Cromer school have made a new year’s resolution to reduce plastic waste through a new recycling scheme.
Every classroom at Cromer Academy now has bins for recycling plastic waste, such as drinks bottles, alongside cardboard and paper.
The green scheme was suggested by the school’s student council following a meeting last year with North Norfolk District Council’s then cabinet member for the environment Hilary Cox, who pledged to support the school’s eco-friendly plans.
Headteacher Antony Little said "The students at Cromer are incredibly environmentally aware and we are pleased to support them in their plans to improve our local and global environments.
“In addition to recycling we are working with our catering team to reduce and reuse plastics in school, and our student council have lots of ideas about how to cut down even more on the amount of plastic we throw away.”

Add a little legal certainty to your New Year’s Resolutions
As we welcome in the New Year many of us will be pursuing New Year's Resolutions; the perfect opportunity to accomplish a personal goal or carry out lifestyle adjustments to change your life for the better. In reality, New Year’s Resolutions are usually broken within a few weeks, but there is one simple thing that can be done which can make a huge difference in the future: making a Will.
Although it is often difficult to think about the inevitable, having a Will in place is arguably one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family. Not only can a will legally protect your partner, children and assets, it can also spell out exactly how you would like things handled after you have passed on.
It is reported that 1 in 3 people in the UK die without having a written Will in place to protect their family and assets. If you die without a Will your estate will be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules. These rules are old fashioned and can lead to disappointment and injustice.
Did you know...? • If you die without a Will your husband, wife or civil partner may not automatically inherit everything; they may have to share your estate with other relatives. • If you are not married or in a civil partnership your partner is not automatically entitled to anything. • If you separate from your spouse, they will stand to receive at least a proportion of your estate if you die before your divorce is fully finalised. • Marriage or entering a civil partnership will revoke your Will.
Today, blended families are more common than ever, with a growing
number of step-families and blended families who are raising children from their previous and present marriages. Consequently, it's important to regularly review your Will to ensure it's still fit for purpose and reflects your current personal circumstances.
Writing a Will does not need to be a lengthy process, after the first appointment, initial draft Wills are usually sent out within 10 working days. Once you are happy with the Will, a further appointment is made for the Will to be signed and witnessed. It is then usual for the legal provider to hold a copy of the Will until it is needed by the family.
We encourage our clients to review their Wills every three to five years, both to ensure that their wishes are up to date but also to consider changes in the law or tax system which may have a personal impact. By way of recent example, in April 2017 the government brought in a new Inheritance Tax (IHT) allowance. This allowance is essentially available on death to anyone leaving a residential property to their children, and is excellent news for many individuals and families who will see huge tax savings as a result. However, the legislation is complex and Wills made prior to 2017 are often drafted in such a way as to prohibit or limit access to this new allowance. A simple thing such as an age contingency on a gift to children or grandchildren, i.e. for my grandchildren at the age of 18, could mean the loss of this allowance.
At Clapham & Collinge Solicitors, we offer a free Will review, with appointments available at our North Walsham and Sheringham offices. If you are considering making a Will or would like a member of our team to have a look at your current Will[s] and advise you about any changes you should consider making, Call our Client Relations Team to book an appointment by calling on 01692 660230 for our North Walsham office or 01263 823398 for our Sheringham office or emailing enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk

Are you ready for Fizz Free February?
Fizz Free February is coming to Cromer for the first time - will you be making the pledge to #gofizzfree?
Friday 1 February marks the start of Fizz Free February meaning it’s time to ditch sugary drinks for 28 days.
Fizz Free February is a great way to reduce your sugar intake by cutting out fizzy drinks. By going fizz free for all of February, it can help you on your way to drinking less sugary drinks for the rest of the year too.
Through this campaign, Cromer Town Council aims to raise awareness of the health implications of drinking fizzy drinks which often contain high amounts of sugar. Latest data Public Health England on the nation’s diet shows that sugar now makes up 13.5% of 4 to 10 year-olds and 14.1% of teenagers daily calorie intake respectively, while the official recommendation is to limit sugar to no more
than 5%.
Almost two thirds (65.7%) of the adult Norfolk population are overweight or obese, slightly higher than the rest of England (62.2%). One in four (23.8%) of the Norfolk population are obese which is slightly lower than the England average (25.2%), and one in fifty (2.4%) are morbidly obese, similar to the England average (2.5%).
If no action is taken, by 2020 adult obesity in Norfolk could see an increase from 174,629 to 253,762, a rise of 31% for which Norfolk will subsequently be spending more than £26m on treating weight related diabetes alone.
• 79% of fizzy drinks contain 6 or more teaspoons of sugar per can (330ml) • Tooth decay is the leading cause for hospitalisation among 5-9 year olds in the UK, with 26,000 children being hospitalised each year due to tooth decay – in other words, 500 each week.
Cllr Phil Harris, Cromer Town Council said “I am so pleased that Fizz Free February is reaching Cromer. It is a fantastic way to cut down on sugar and make positive changes. Good luck to everyone going fizz free this February!”

Cromer WI
We started off 2019 with a change of venue as the Community Hall is having improvements made. We met in the Parish Hall which will be our home for the next couple of months. The President welcomed 50 members including 3 new members and 2 visitors.
Our speaker was Peter Lawrence whose very entertaining talk was called ‘From the Krays to the Crown -A Policeman’s Lot’. Mr Lawrence joined the Metropolitan Police in 1960 when his only form of communication with other officers was his whistle. He also had a key to the blue police boxes which were found all over the country and a truncheon. We were told anecdotes from his life as an East End policeman during the 60s and 70s. He illustrated his talk with photographs including Winston Churchill’s funeral and one of the 1981 Royal Wedding both of which he was on duty.
Our competition was the letter G- we had joint winners, Rosie Evans with a Geode and Liz Holhouse with a Giraffe. Third place was Eileen Tucker with a Garter.
Four members were given birthday posies as they celebrate in January and three retiring committee members were give flowers as a token of thanks for their time on the committee.
Our next meeting will be in the Parish Hall, Church Street on 14 February when our speaker is Mrs Karen Norton from Guide Dogs for the Blind. Visitors are always welcome.
Overstrand WI
Our first meeting of 2019 was a delightful departure from our usual format, as we all tucked into a piping hot fish and chip supper before the business was speedily dealt with, and forthcoming dates were flagged up.
The Christmas lunch at Northrepps Cottage and the Nor Easter Carol Service in Cromer Church were declared enjoyable and were well attended.
The rest of the evening was devoted to shaping possible events for 2020, with some good ideas suggested by many members.

The Strand Club
On a dreary January day 29 members and friends met at the Amber Restaurant at Cromer Country Club for our New Year lunch.
We have chosen this restaurant for several years now as the standard has always been high. This year did not disappoint. The service was very slick with our main courses coming out quickly, closely followed by large dishes of hot vegetables. Whatever we had chosen, we were delighted with the resulting dish. They were all tasty, hot and beautifully cooked. Our empty plates were soon removed and the desserts followed swiftly. The room fell silent as we munched our way through such delights as warm waffles with toffee sauce, luscious lemon pie or a medley of marvellous ice cream flavours.
The raffle table looked tempting with its variety of prizes so once our plates were again empty it was 'heads down, look in' as Jackie worked her way through the tickets and people went up to choose their booty. We were delighted that many of our visitors won prizes - perhaps they will be back?!
Our next meeting will be on 13 February when Charissa Malpass from Co-op Estate Planning will give a talk entitled ‘Tax, Care and Toy Boys’. This will cover subjects like lasting power of attorney, inheritance tax, protecting your family's inheritance after re-marriage and similar topics. This should be an interesting afternoon and all are welcome. For the princely sum of £2 you will gain entry and be entitled to tea and light refreshments at the end of the talk. Please come and see if you like us! We meet at 2pm in the Sports Pavilion in Overstrand. We hope to see you there.
For further information about the Club please telephone either Jackie, our Chairman, on 01263 720866 or Chris, our Secretary, on 01263 579433.
What Lies Beneath?
Norfolk’s Great Barrier Reef is the inspiration behind a major exhibition in the county this March.
The collaboration between fused glass artist Susan Purser Hope and painter Rainie Kay opens at the Anteros Gallery in Fye Bridge Street, Norwich on 5 March and runs until 16 March. It will be officially unveiled by Anwen, Lady Hurt on 7 March and pays Great Human Achievements Rainie Kay homage to the Cromer Shoals Chalk Bed, created when dinosaurs ruled the earth, stretching 20 miles into the North Sea, with its extraordinary and beautiful world of marine life.
Lady Hurt said “I am delighted to be involved in the opening of an exhibition which raises awareness both of one of our hidden coastal treasures and also of the manmade threat to our seas.”
Susan, a fused glass artist and Chair of the Contemporary Glass Society adds “Our work illustrates the fragile beauty of this ocean environment and the threat to the creatures that live within it from man-made plastic pollution.”
It was a chance meeting with diver Rob Spray from Seasearch that instigated this collaboration between Susan and Rainie. Rob, who led the team that discovered the reef, described it at the time as “like finding a natural Stonehenge hidden under the water”. Rob will be talking about this little known marine world in a lecture at Anteros on 9 March.
Susan lives in Cromer and her glass installations feature in public and private buildings throughout the UK. Her main focus is on promoting wellbeing through community based glass workshops. She will be running a series of workshops for children and adults during the exhibition. Rainie Kay works from her studio on the coast near Cromer and is a former professional photographer. She is Chair of the North Norfolk Organisation of Visual Artists. She is a passionate conservationist and the sale of her one feature artworks will benefit locally-active groups helping the coastal environment and its creatures. Cromer Times 558 February 2nd 2019

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
A recent cry for help was received from someone caring for a person who was being evicted from their present home and could only take two of their thirteen cats to their new home. None of the cats had been neutered. all were related, were 2 years old or under and were either black and white or black. It was agreed we should get the cats in two at a time although, once in care, more than two could be housed in our larger pens. The first ones to arrive were both quite thin and had heavy flea infestations. As with most cats that come into care from these situations, they were quite timid to begin with but quickly responded once they realised that they were being well fed and receiving individual care and attention. Ten of them have already left to join their new families, with one more leaving this weekend.
Before the last three could be collected by the carer he discovered that one of the remaining cats had just had kittens. Because of the flea situation we asked the carer to try and get the owner to sign the cat and kittens over immediately as the kittens were vulnerable and could possibly die. Unfortunately, they would not sign them over as suggested and sadly the little mum came into care, having lost them all. We often see adult cats that have a serious problem with fleas, which can cause anaemia, easily identified as their gums will be very pale. For kittens the problem is even more serious, as illustrated in this instance.
When cats leave us for their new homes, they go with 4 weeks free Pet Insurance. Although we cannot advise new owners about these products they may decide to stay with that company, decide to use a different one, or opt not to take out any insurance at all. We do suggest they consider how they will pay for any future treatment the cat will require and to ensure they do have sufficient money to pay the bill as we cannot offer this kind of help once the cat has left our care. Pet Insurance will usually cover for accidents, illness and any treatment needed (it will depend

Despite keeping the hogspital temperature at 65F some of the larger hogs are not emerging at night to eat - because of the warmth they will not go into proper hibernation and will only sleep for a few nights before waking again for food.

Cromer and District Garden Society
Members gathered for our first meeting of 2019 may have been forgiven for thinking that Halloween was upon us again as the topic chosen by our speaker, Dr Tony Leech, was ‘Witches and Devils – the Darker Side of Fungi’.
Rather than simply showing examples of different fungi Dr Leech concentrated on many of the popular myths that have grown up over the years.
It is easy to make fun of witches today but in the past they were very knowledgeable cooks and they used different types of fungi in their cooking. Folklore said that fungi could be eaten if it peels but this is wrong as is the idea that they are safe if they do not blacken a silver spoon. If it is eaten by animals and if it smells like a mushroom (!!) are myths as well. ‘Witches’ Butter’, ‘Witches’ Egg’ and ‘Devil’s Claw’ are names of fungi that perpetuate the link between witches and food. Mushrooms
from the wild should only be eaten if they have been identified as safe, are in good condition and are not eaten raw. The fact that some field guides say things like “edible with caution”, “harmless but best avoided” and “tasty but perhaps poisonous” show how chancy eating mushrooms from the wild can be.
‘Fly Agaric’, most people’s idea of the perfect mushroom, is very poisonous but has been eaten for hallucinatory purposes or to bring on a trance like state, often connected with religious beliefs. In the Second World War many people in Europe ate ‘Brown Rollrim’ mushrooms to supplement their limited diet but many died. ‘Chicken of the Woods’ is the only edible bracket fungus but many will react to it all the same. ‘Common Inkcap’ is edible but not with alcohol.
Fairy rings appear in many lawns in the autumn and it was thought that they were caused by fairies dancing, lightning, moles

or courting hedgehogs!! They are harmless and can be left alone and as the mycellium that causes them develops underground they are not easy to get rid of.
Our next meeting is in The Cottage on Louden Road at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 13 February. Charlotte Philcox will be explaining how fruit and vegetables can be incorporated into gardens alongside the usual plants and shrubs. Sounds interesting. Visitors are very welcome. Cost £2.

Judith Kerr’s first picture book, The Tiger Who Came to Tea began as a bedtime story for her own children and
was published in 1968, soon becoming a classic, selling millions of copies worldwide. It celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018 with a special exhibition that has been touring the country and this week arrives in Norfolk.
Little explorers will be able to find tigers hidden around the house, before going down to the kitchens to have fun dressing up. Alongside copies of original artwork, notes and sketches, children can then enjoy stepping into Sophie’s kitchen to have tea with a lifesize tiger. Tiger themed storytelling sessions will be held on Wednesdays and on a variety of weekend dates, these are bookable online in advance via the website, or just turn up on the day (places available on a first come first serve basis). Please check the website for dates and times.
For older ones, explore Judith’s childhood through a film on her experiences of having to escape Germany during the war, how it felt to be a refugee in Switzerland, then France before finally settling in London in 1936. The film features children from Christ Church C of E Primary School in Newcastle upon Tyne who investigated why the issues of conflict and displacement are as relevant today as in the 1930s.
Judith Kerr said ‘I first told this story to my small daughter long ago. She was rather critical of my other stories but used to say, “Talk the tiger!” So, when she and her brother were both at school and I had more time, I thought I would make it into a picture book – and much to my amazement, here it still is 50 years later.’
The Tiger Who Came to Tea exhibition will run daily until Sunday 3 March, from 11am until 3.30pm (last entry to the house at 3pm). www.nationaltrust.org.uk/blickling-estate

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club On 8 January, after an excellent lunch, we heard about ‘The Rise and Fall of TSR2.
This was a talk given by David Morton about a former British aviation project.
In 1951 the UK’s economy was in a very poor state, the global political scene was changing, and the government was considering what military threats there were and what steps to take in terms of national defence. It put out a tender for a new design of aircraft, and the British Aircraft Corporation was set up, combining Vickers and General Electric. The result was the TSR2 project, though it took 14 committees to inaugurate it! There were many difficulties to overcome in developing the TSR2, including the need for the undercarriage to fold into the body of the aircraft. Eventually, because of continued quarrels and spiralling costs, in 1965 the project was cancelled under a new Labour government. All documentation to do with TSR2 had to be destroyed, as also the planes themselves. However, two of these were cleverly hidden under tarpaulins behind some hangers, and are now to be found as static displays at the Imperial War Museum Duxford and the RAF Museum at Cosford! Despite the abandonment of TSR2, the engineers were able to carry their new knowledge forward into other aviation projects such as Concorde. The talk included many other details about the TSR2 and its history and aroused a lot of interest. David (who also speaks on many other subjects as well as being a volunteer at Cosford) was thanked for his excellent presentation by our secretary, Dave Vickery.
Our next meeting at The Links Hotel, West Runton, will be on Tuesday 5 February, when our speaker will be Phyllida Scrivens on the subject of ‘Lady Lord Mayors of Norwich’, about whom she has written a book. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our future meetings you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information. Cromer Times 558 February 2nd 2019

Local hairdresser’s new play to premier at Sheringham Little Theatre
danielwarricker@hotmail.co.uk
Local hairdresser, Nigel Manson, will be premiering his new play ‘Miss Marble strikes; Again!!’ at the Little Theatre, Sheringham on 8 and 9 March.
The comedy come farce will be presented by Stage Direct who have previously had successful shows at the Little Theatre, the Atrium in North Walsham and the Granary.
The group has enjoyed many years of experience of putting on performances at various prestigious venues in North Norfolk. In recent times they have produced ‘Good Morning Mr Magpie’ by David Starling and ‘The Village Hall’ by Ashley Burgoyne. Of course, more home grown plays are short listed and being planned in the near future. Stage Direct can boast of a host of playwrights, screen writers and published authors providing a constant stream of new material as and when needed. Nigel, a 54 year old former student of Sheringham High School, boasts that his family’s history in Sheringham dates back to the 1870s. He and his sister Sharon

co-own Hair by Solo where they have practiced their hairdressing skills since 1984. He joined Stage Direct Drama group around 20 years ago and has been either a member of the cast or crew and has directed and produced in many of their productions. Nigel has written a number of plays and a pantomime, which was produced some years ago. Nigel will also be directing the play and says that he was delighted when Stage Direct agreed to premier his new play. ‘Miss Marble strikes: Again!!’says Nigel ‘is a comic play, with some dark undertones, based around the comings and goings of a house at 26 Waverly Lane, Farnham. Farcical episodes from the owners of the house to secure rendezvous’ with their secret lovers do not go to plan. Their housekeeper Miss Marble is almost forced to go on strike, a non-English speaking Spanish lady is brought into the fray and is held captive under the stairs, until finally the dark undercurrents lead up to the play coming to a rather unique conclusion!’ Apart from long term members, there will be a new very talented younger member joining the production. Anna Ryan (as Meg) will be making her Stage Direct debut.
Performance dates are 8 and 9 March and tickets are available from the box office 01263 822347 or www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Four crew members at RNLI Cromer have passed important tests, which enable them to be fully operational members of crew
Three crew – Reis Khalil, Kevin Johnson and Mark Southgate are now fully trained as operational members of the inshore lifeboat – ‘George and Muriel’, whilst Vernon Hoare will be a mechanic on the all weather lifeboat ‘Lester’.
Richard Leeds, Lifeboat Operations Manager for Cromer’s RNLI Lifeboat, says ‘We are very proud of these crew who have worked hard and with a lot of dedication to pass these requirements to become fully trained boat crew’.

World Day of Prayer
Kevin Johnson
Everything is ready and the invitation is for everyone – men, women and children of all ages - to join this day of prayer at 2pm on Friday 1 March at Cromer Parish Church.
Women of Slovenia, one of the smallest and youngest countries in Europe, have prepared this years’ service and they encourage us to reflect on the barriers they have faced since the end of the Second World War when their country was part of Yugoslavia, a Marxist socialist republic. They share the challenges they have met and the hopes they have for the future.
World Day of Prayer is an international inter-church organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world, their hopes, concerns and prayers. The preparation for the day is vast. An international committee is based in New York and there are national committees in each participating country. Regional conferences meet to consider the service and then local groups make their plans.
Finally on Friday 1 March people will gather to celebrate the service prepared by the women of Slovania.
The Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 120 countries. It begins in Samoa and prayer in native languages travels throughout the world – through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas before finishing in American Samoa some 38 hours later.

Helping Harry
Vernon Hoare
Two-year-old Harry Deeba is cheeky and full of mischief. He’s active and full of energy, choosing to run everywhere rather than walk! He loves planes, helicopters, diggers and ‘nee-naws’ – any vehicle with a siren. This amazing little boy was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma in January 2018, turning his family’s world upside down.
With Harry nearing the end of his frontline treatment, everyone is hopeful he will be in remission when he has his next scans in April. But neuroblastoma is a particularly aggressive childhood cancer, almost 50% of children diagnosed will relapse at some point, and when that happens, less than one in ten survive.
So Harry’s parents, Carly and Ali, are appealing for your support. They need to raise £239,000 by the end of April to access a vaccine in New York that’s showing promising signs in reducing the chances of relapse, giving Harry the best chance at living cancer-free.
There are many ways you can help Harry - by making a personal donation, holding a fundraising event, getting sponsored to take on a challenge or simply by following and sharing Harry’s story through his Facebook page. You can also make a donation via his Just Giving page https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/harrydeeba , or if you’d prefer to text donate, text HADE99 and your amount £1 – £10 to 70070.

NNDC Community Transport
The December 2018 round of Community Transport Funding has seen local projects awarded over £19000
