Most of the NANSA league matches have been arranged. We already have 21 friendly games organised and 4 Ladies’ fixtures. So enough games to satisfy all members whatever their ability and more faces, old and new, would be welcomed. Come and see what you’re missing! Some of the Friday evening regulars enjoyed a surprise Burns Night courtesy of Jackie and Jack, many thanks to them. Jack ‘addressed’ the haggis with aplomb and it went down a treat with the neaps and tatties.

Cromer Flower Club
On 21 January we held our AGM - all officers remain the same and we welcome Val Kirkwood onto our committee.
We had a busy year last year helping at Beeston Church Flower Festival, decorating the Carnival’s Queen’s Float, making wreaths and decorating Christmas trees earning two awards along the way. Also check out our new facebook page. 2019 is a big year for the club being our 40th anniversary which we will celebrate on May 15th with an event at Northrepps Country Hotel. The competition winners were: Novice: Maureen Amies, runner up: Mary Jane Woodhouse, Intermediate: Longlands Advanced: Pearl Self and the Best in Show Champion Val Kirkwood.
Icarus Hines gave us an amusing and interesting talk on ‘A Butcher’s Tale’ When he opened his shop in Cromer in 1985 there were 6 butcher shops plus George on duty outside. We heard about George’s antics over the years including being accused of loitering and kidnap and of course his famous calendars! We are all very fond of George! He told us about the changing nature of butchery over the years, more red tape and regulations, interest in traceability and the move to quick and convenient cuts and meals. The vote of thanks was given by our President Olga Bryant.
Our next meeting is on 18 February at 1.45pm in the Junior School and the demonstrator is Jacqui Aldous on ‘That’s Entertainment Act IV.
Trustees needed for local charity
Have you been wondering about volunteering for a good cause, but want to use your particular skills?
Still working or newly retired with some energy and enthusiasm, but wanting to “give something back” to your community?
Age Concern North Norfolk, based in Sheringham, is a small charity that supports the elderly in the wider area (some with early dementia) with a Day Centre Hub, Intergenerational activities and a Drop in Service. If you join us you will have the chance to make a real difference to the lives of older people in our community.
If you have current or past financial, business, HR or administrative expertise, your skills will be particularly valuable, but we welcome expressions of interest from all individuals over 18 years of age who are willing to commit regularly approximately 4 hours a month to volunteering with us as a Trustee. This time includes our monthly trustees meeting (currently the third Thursday in the month) and some extra time using your own particular skill set. This might be to help with fund raising or other tasks.
Trustees usually serve initially for a period of 3 years.
You will be joining a small team of dedicated people who will offer any support that may be needed. We will value your unique skills and innovative ideas. If you are interested, please contact ageconcernmanager@gmail.com or phone 01263 821188.
There will be an informal interview process and a chance for you to ask any questions of your own, as well as find out what being a trustee is all about. We look forward very much to meeting you.
Mrs Jennie Cummings-Knight, Chair Age Concern North Norfolk

Cromer in Bloom
Cromer in Bloom have had another busy and productive year, despite the difficult growing conditions during the drought of June and July.
thrive in dry conditions. They are grown in shingle, with no need to water once they are established. Many of these plants have silvery or hairy leaves which are more able to withstand dry conditions.
We are hoping to emulate some of Beth Chatto’s ideas later in the spring when we give the bed opposite Morrisons garage a makeover. This garden has always been problematic as the soil is very dry and is also exposed to all the elements that the North Sea can throw at it – there is no shelter for tender young plants. Watch this space!
We went to Beth Chatto’s garden in Essex in June which is was well worth the long trip. We were all inspired by the variety of planting for different types of conditions and soils. We were particularly interested in the plants which
If you are a Cromer business or town resident who would be happy to sponsor our current projects or could kindly help with occasional watering during the dry summer months, please contact us too.

Newly planted garden in North Lodge Park We were very pleased with our show garden in North Lodge Park, designed by our Chairman Jim Bond and ‘trompe l’oeil’ doors painted by artist Di Lindsay to create a seaside feel to a previously forlorn area of the park. The sedum ‘crab’ has grown well and provided quite a talking point for locals and visitors alike!
If you would like to join our friendly group of gardeners, contact Jim Bond on 01263 514515.
Beth Chatto’s Dry Garden Friends of North Lodge Park have also invited us to create a garden especially for winter colour this year. We are planning a trip to Cambridge Botanic Gardens for inspiration where there is a fabulous winter garden with a variety of white, silver, orange and red stemmed plants, underplanted with bulbs.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS in in 2019? 20 19 ? SOLICITORS
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2019 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Beware of the Dog
I heard about some robberies In my local neighbourhood, So I thought I would protect myself And my house, the best I could. I barred all doors and apertures, I used ten planks of wood! I blocked and taped and reinforced Everything I could. I put up signs outside the house To warn, ‘Beware - Wild Dog! A savage beast lives in this house, Mad as any Hog!’ I thought I’d give fair warning, ‘Cos he patrols my garden’s edge, He may only be a Yorkie, But he’ll reach their meat and veg! Madeline – a quarter of a quartet!
Madeline Hudson, from Overstrand has a busy life
She is a French teacher at the Belfry Arts Centre in Overstrand, an actress who has performed at both the Cromer Pavilion and at the Sheringham Little Theatre and a singer with the Walker Brothers of Norfolk, raising money for both local and national charities.
Come along and meet old friends and colleagues. We want to keep this meeting going but need your support. If you have any memorabilia bring it along so we can copy it and have it added to the NW archives site. There is plenty of parking space – so make it a date.
February 12noon - 4.30pm at Thorpe Market Church, NR11 8UA - enjoy the snowdrops and sale of work by local artist Gillian Eustace. Original paintings, scenic cards, coasters, wrist-warmers and much more. Delicious refreshments available. Free parking and admission
Her next production combines her skills as an actress and a singer as she takes the role of Jean in the production of Quartet. Jean is an opera singer, a world-renowned soprano… . at least she was. She suddenly stopped singing and no one knows why. When she arrives at a home for retired performers, she finds that not only is her exhusband there, but two other opera singers with whom she has sung in the past. The four opera singers are pressured to sing a quartet from Verdi’s Rigoletto, which they sang together in the past, in a concert to raise money for their retirement home, but Jean absolutely refuses. Will they persuade her to sing?
Will Madeline have to learn to sing opera? All will be revealed in this humorous but poignant play.
Quartet is a Little Theatre Players production and will be on at Sheringham Little Theatre from Thursday 21 March to Saturday 23 March. Tickets are £12 from the Theatre Box office 01263 761468 www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Treat your skin this winter
Cost effective, skin rejuvenation treatments special packages are available
You are still active and you feel great. But, the effects of time, sun, wind and toxins in our air have taken their toll on the appearance of your skin. It’s not as smooth as it was when you were younger. Now there are effective procedures available to reverse these changes. We have created special cost effective packages to look after your skin during the winter months. 1] Polish and Brighten. This is a fantastic treatment to polish and brighten the skin. This includes diamond microdermabrasion to exfoliate the skin. Not only this exfoliates and polishes your skin, it also stimulates collagen synthesis in the deeper layers to improve the overall skin quality. Microdermabrasion is then followed by LED treatment with a red light to further improve and brighten your skin to give it a nice glow.
2] Tone and Tighten. This includes treatment with our gentle lasers to give a nice even tone to your skin. Although you will notice results after one session, for best results we suggest a course of these and packages are available. Of course any of these treatments can be combined with our excellent range of skin products and other state-of-the-art treatments to look after your skin year around.

New opportunities for therapeutic riding in North Norfolk
Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) is pleased to announce the setting up of two new RDA Groups covering the wider North Norfolk Area.
At RDA, our horses and ponies provide therapy, achievement and enjoyment to people with disabilities all over the UK. Our network of 500 volunteer groups organise activities such as riding, carriage driving, vaulting and show jumping to over 25,000 people each year. Now riders in the North Norfolk area will have the opportunity to choose between two newly created groups.
Norfolk Coast RDA is based at North Norfolk Riding Centre, Walsingham and Worstead and District RDA rides at Squirrelwood Equestrian Centre, Hall Farm, Worstead.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Every January we have to send information to Cats Protection Head Office relating to the work that the branch has undertaken during the previous year. Seeing the information in black and white underlines how important it is to follow the guidelines we are given to ensure the cats have the best quality of care while with us and that we have done everything we can to make sure they are ready for their lives with new families.
When the cats first arrive in care they go to one of our vets to have a health check. At this stage they will receive their first vaccination which includes cover for the Leukaemia Virus and be micro-chipped, unless this has already been done. If they have not been neutered, arrangements will be made for this to be done at this stage. During the year 82 cats and kittens, either while in our care or after they were re-homed, were neutered, 123 cats were vaccinated and 118 micro-chipped at branch expense. We will also blood test the cat for FIV/FELV if its previous history is
Hedgehog Haven
Hal is the latest new arrival. He was being overwintered elsewhere, but has come into care as he had stopped eating and was losing weight.
He has been with me for 10 days and has had a course of antibiotics. His weight has now stabilised and at 600 grams is about hibernation weight, so I feel some of the problem is that his body is telling him it’s time to have a sleep. I will be keeping him in the hogspital, to make sure he doesn't lose too much weight while having a sleep.
A fundraising coffee morning is being held at Swanton Abbot Village on Saturday 16 March from 10am to 12noon.
Has your Dog or Cat missed their annual booster Vaccination?
unknown or if it is an unneutered female with kittens. Some of the cats from a multi cat household will also be tested when they come into care and we will also test some of the cats from feral colonies plus any stray cat not in good health to ensure that they are all healthy too and not likely to spread these two very nasty viruses. We had 38 cats in care plus 6 feral/ stray cats tested. One cat in care Jacko, last of the lovely young cats tested positive to FIV and is still from the multi cat household waiting for someone to offer him a home and one very poorly stray tested positive to FELV and was put to sleep.
As well as the cats neutered in care and under our neutering campaign, we also paid for 56 feral cats to be neutered, 4 of which were relocated to new sites in barns and stables. Cats that are not used to too much contact with people are happiest left in their normal environment, although we have on occasion discovered a cat in a colony to be a cat that has in the past lived in a home. This can usually be identified by its behaviour when taken to the vets to be neutered. Several cats have needed dentals this year and in total 30 have needed veterinary treatment for various reasons (23 of which were in care). Sadly, one little kitten had to be euthanized due to major health problems. No other cat or kitten has died in care. We are proud that, by following Cats Protection guidelines and not allowing the cats to mix, we have been able to isolate any infections, thus keeping these to a minimum.

This Month in North Lodge Park History North Lodge Park celebrates its 90th birthday this year – on Saturday 18 May – and over the next few months, thanks to the Friends of North Lodge Park, we will be featuring a new series of articles entitled ‘This Month in North Lodge Park History...’ along with a trip down Memory Lane with various local people. We begin with February ‌

Daphne ran Seaview until 1988, with many local children enjoying ambulance and hospital visits, even taking a piano apart to show how it worked. Cromer Carnival set to celebrate 50th year – what are your memories? your memories and highlights - they could be more recently, or 50 years ago. It need be only a sentence or two. Let’s see if we can make it a publication that you have contributed to and all supporters of Cromer Carnival will want to own. We will also be putting all the memories and photos submitted onto a new website which we hope will grow throughout the year.” To submit your memories by email email cromercarnival50 @gmail.com. Alternatively you can call Tony Shipp on 01263 512591. There will also be a drop-in morning for people to bring in memories and photos to share with the carnival. This will take place at Merchants Place, Cromer on Saturday 16th February from 10am to 2pm. All photos and memories brought in on the day will be copied so they can be used in the booklet or on the website.
Cromer Carnival 1980 – Children’s fancy dress on the promenade
As one of the biggest carnivals in the country, organisers would like to hear from you about your memories of this iconic event. Over the past 50 years the carnival has been entertaining thousands of visitors and locals alike with a year-round programme of events, centring around Carnival Week in August.
This year Cromer Carnival week will be held between Saturday 17 August and Friday 23 August, with Carnival Day being held on Wednesday 21 August.
Many of the Carnival favourites return this year with the Bonny Baby Competition, Knobbly Knees Contest, Glamorous Grandmother Competition, Decorated Beach Hut Competition, Waiter and Watresses Race and the fabulous Family Fun Day.
There will also be a number of special events throughout the year to celebrate the 50th year and the committee will be bringing back events which were popular in the past.
The Carnival will host a Midsummer Charity Ball in aid of EACH, on Saturday 22 June at Northrepps Cottage. Tickets are on sale at £45 per person and can be obtained from, the Gift Shop on the corner of Garden Street and Church Street, Cromer or via Diane Burdett on 01263 511981.
Across the decades the events of carnival week have constantly changed but the spirit of the carnival has remained the same – one of fun, family and celebration.
Now, organisers are planning to put together a booklet and website to look back on the past 50 years of Cromer Voluntary Entertainments Organisation (CVEO) – the organisation behind Cromer Carnival.
Cromer Carnival 1980 – It’s a Knockout on the Carnival field
They would like you to share your memories, photos and highlights of the carnival with them.
Were you a winner of one of the carnival events, a former Miss Cromer, a committee member, an organiser of an event, a volunteer or display act at a previous carnival? Why does Cromer carnival hold a special memory for you? Tony Shipp, Chairman of the Carnival, who will this year celebrate his 35th year at the helm, said “As part of our celebrations marking the 50th Anniversary of the C.V.E.O. we are planning to put together a booklet of photographs, memories, highlights and the history of Cromer Carnival.
Tony Shipp – Cromer Carnival Chairman 1984
“I am sure many of you, who have been involved at some time over the past 50 years, have photographs and memories that could be part of that publication.
It would be great if you could search these out or write them down and email them to us so we can hear what Cromer Carnival has meant to you. Please take time to search through your photographs and write down

Break-up without breaking down
by Rob Colwell, Director and Head of Family Services, Hayes + Storr
The frequency of separations at this time of year are well documented – family lawyers are inundated with new enquires between New Year’s Day and Valentine’s Day. Getting a divorce can have a major impact on your mental health, and an acrimonious or one sided break-up can result in serious consequences. Some will seek retribution, others won’t accept it, and some will find it difficult to imagine a future without their spouse.
Being mindful of a client’s mental well-being whilst ensuring we achieve the best possible results can be a careful balancing act. Our aim is to deliver an outcome which causes the least amount of distress in what is already a traumatic situation. The end of a relationship can be devastating, and no matter who ended it or when, life can feel empty and frightening – but life does continue and many people go on to live happy, fulfilled lives after divorce. That’s why we keep our clients focused on the future, encouraging them to avoid negative emotions and think practically about the potential outcomes.
The lawyers in the Family Services department at Hayes + Storr are members of Resolution, a national organisation of family lawyers
committed to non-confrontational divorce, separation and other family problems. Our team is guided by Resolution’s conciliatory and person-centred approach, including:
• Helping clients focus on what’s important in the long-term
• Balancing financial and emotional costs with what the client wants to achieve • Working with others to find the right approach and the best solutions
• Managing stress in what can sometimes be a very stressful situation
Not only does this practical approach facilitate our clients’ ability to cope, it also ensures costs are kept as low as possible, avoiding entrenched arguments that have no resolve. Our goal is to help clients adapt to their new situation and look for alternative solutions to court proceedings, avoiding unnecessary stress, costs and delays.
If you’re concerned about yourself or anyone else going through divorce or separation, we recommend visiting the Relate website at www.relate.org.uk for lots of helpful resources,
and don’t forget you can call the Samaritans free of charge at any time on 116123. They offer 24/7 support every single day of the year and you don’t have to be suicidal to get in touch. You can also get a referral from your GP for free counselling sessions on the NHS. A break-up can be hard to manage, so speaking with health professionals to develop coping strategies can be very helpful.

NEW MOT TEST STATION IN CROMER The Jaymic Workshop Ltd
The Jaymic Workshop Ltd are now nearly 2 months into the running of their own MOT test station. They also added to their portfolio of car services a 3D 4 wheel alignment system (tracking) in October 2018.
The name ‘Jaymic’ leads people to associate with classic BMWs. That certainly is an element of their business that they pride their reputation on, worldwide! However, they are also a general day-to-day garage, offering servicing and maintenance, tyres, MOTs and tracking (of course), accident repairs, batteries, diagnostics, and they have full bodyshop facilities too. The Jaymic Workshop Ltd was formed in October 2004, after the old owner of Jaymic Ltd retired, therefore ‘Jaymic’ have been at Old Station Yard, Cromer since 1973! Mark and James were former employees, since 1987 and 1999 respectively, and were keen to keep the business running.
We are not to be confused with Jaymic Systems Ltd (the first building on the Old Station Yard site), or Jaymic Ltd (Aldborough), as we are no longer linked businesses regardless of the names.
To celebrate their wider portfolio, they are offering MOTs at £34.99 and a further 10% off if you have left them a 5* review on Facebook AND Google. Retests will be free (as long as they are undertaken within 10 working days), and complimentary teas and coffees are available for you to enjoy if you decide to wait.
