Coxswain reaches 30 year mile stone of service

continued from front cover... ...‘Her Majesty The Queen’ when the coxswain Billy Davies was awarded an RNLI Vellum for the service and the crew – of which I was one – got RNLI certificates.

The second would be when we launched the same night as when we held our Ball to celebrate 200 years of Lifeboats in Cromer. The evening had come to a finish when the alerters sounded and we launched in our DJ’s. This was to the yacht Suli Suli which took place in the early hours of 27 June 2004 with the ‘Ruby and Arthur Reed II’ lifeboat.

Another memorable time would be receiving my 20 years long service medal from the late Richard Davies, a man who has had a great impression on my life boating life’.

Cromer RNLI has a long history of brave volunteers such as Ady. When he knew he had achieved 30 years’ service , he stressed that he was one person who is always willing to help anyone who needs it. He also said ‘I continue to be a committed member of a team and am proud to be able to have served and will continue to do so’.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

On 5 February, after an excellent lunch and with 35 club members present, Phyllida Scrivens spoke to us on the subject of ‘The Lady Lord Mayors of Norwich’, about whom she has recently published a book. Norwich is the first place in Great Britain to have had a lady Lord Mayor – Ethel Mary Colman, from 1923 to 1924. Since then, there have been 16 other lady Lord Mayors (their official title is simply ‘Lord Mayor’) and, at the time of writing the book, Phyllida was able to interview the nine who were still living in Norwich.

She had researched the background of all 17 and showed us what a full schedule of public service Lord Mayors have (despite contending in some cases with ill health). This public service included not only official engagements but also many other significant contributions on the civic scene – for example, work with various charities. There were sometimes difficult events to cope with, as in 1994 when there was a fire in the Central Library of Norwich; then in 1995 there was another major fire, 6

this time in the Assembly House. Towards the end of her talk, Phyllida showed us slides depicting various scenes in the public life of the lady Lord Mayors, such as one showing the mayoral robes: black and gold upon being made Lord Mayor, and red for more ‘informal’ occasions. There were also slides of the civic coach (no longer in use), the Lord Mayor’s procession, a royal visit to the city, and a mayoral visit to HMS Norfolk before it was decommissioned. Our lunch secretary Dave Vickery thanked Phyllida for her excellent and most informative talk

Our next meeting at The Links Hotel, West Runton, will be on Tuesday 5 March, when our speaker will be Mr Francis Furrow, on the subject of ‘The History of Beeston Common’. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our future meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

Get off MY land!

by Susan Matthews, Director, Hayes + Storr Solicitors

This is a phrase often associated with farmers but what if you cannot prove it is your land? In a rural county such as Norfolk, where large areas of land and many homes have remained in the same family for generations, it should come as little surprise that there are areas of land which are not registered at the Land Registry. What is surprising, is the amount of land and property which remains unregistered and how often people are unaware of it.

Compulsory registration only came to rural Norfolk in 1989 and even then this was only for purchases of land for value or leases for a term of over 21 years. In 1998, assents (transfers of land after death) and legal mortgages became compulsory registerable and in 2002 it became compulsory for nearly all land transactions to be registered or, to trigger a first registration. Shorter term arrangements, such as farm business tenancies and leases of less than seven years, do not have to be registered but, may need to be noted against the landlord’s freehold title.

In the absence of a land or property transaction to trigger a first registration, land will remain unregistered unless a voluntary application is made to the Land Registry to register it. This may

be considered an unwelcome hassle and cost, but there is good argument to registering land and property, even if it is just to have a secure and clear record of what you own.

With unregistered farmland, there is often a field swapped with a neighbour many years ago and not formally recorded, or a change in a boundary agreed but not documented. Often, it is the older generation who has this knowledge and can provide evidence of ownership. It is therefore important that the registration process is undertaken whilst current or former owners or farm managers/ workers can provide key facts vital for the registration process. This is particularly the case if title deeds are missing or have been lost or destroyed.

It is much harder to claim adverse possession or ‘squatters’ rights’ over registered property or for a neighbour to encroach onto your land. If you are looking to sell, gift or mortgage your land or property the process is much simpler and quicker (and often cheaper!) if dealing with a registered title.

The Land Registry is keen for land and property to be registered and offers a reduced fee for those registrations which are undertaken voluntarily. It may well be

time to dig out those title deeds and consider an application to register your land.

If you would like to speak with a member of the agricultural or property team about registering your land or property, Hayes + Storr are holding free consultation days at their Fakenham and Swaffham offices during March. Please contact 01328 863231 if you would like to book a place.

THE DREAMERS OF DREAMS

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society in Concert

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to be returning to Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 6 April at 7.30pm for their next concert entitled “The Dreamers of Dreams”.

The choir, directed by David Ballard, will be performing works by two of the most successful composers at opposite ends of the 20th Century, namely Sir Edward Elgar and John Rutter. Elgar’s The Music Makers is a beautiful ode to those who create music with words by Arthur O’Shaughnessy. The opening lines set the scene “We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams”. Rutter’s popular Requiem is dedicated to his father who had recently died when he completed composing the work in 1985. He combines the traditional Latin text with bible verses in English – notably Psalm 23 “The Lord is My Shepherd” and Psalm 130 “Out of the Deep”.

D Norton Firewood

The choir will be joined by soprano soloist Zaira Palumbo who recently graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and is a rising star on the local classical music scene. This concert which will be accompanied by a small chamber ensemble is presented with the greatly appreciated support of Cromer Town Council and Norfolk County Council.

Tickets for the concert are available from Sheringham Little Theatre 01263 822347 or online www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com priced £12 (under 18’s free) or £15 on the door. Visit www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk for more information about the choir. Zaira Palumbo (© John Newstead )

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Apologies to anyone who has recently tried to contact Stephanie but has been unable to do so as we have had problems with calls. The original problem was caused by power failures which meant that, although the phone rang, there was no connection, Stephanie would therefore be unaware that someone was calling and the answer phone was, of course, also unavailable. This happened over several days, lasting from about 9 am until 1 pm and affected Stephanie and her neighbours. As this occurred during the cold spell, we were also concerned as it affected the heating for our cat pens. Thankfully normal service was eventually resumed.

Another problem then emerged for Stephanie, and her long-suffering neighbours, which we are hoping has also been dealt with. The phone has been ringing but when she picks up the telephone, she cannot hear the person on the other end of the line (this has happened on several occasions when I have rung her). The answer phone has taken messages when she is not available but, again, she cannot hear what the person says.

If you have rung recently, have not heard back and still need to speak to her, please call again. As Open Reach have recently been working in the area, she and her neighbours are all hoping the problem has now been resolved.

Some of the cats that come into care have quite challenging problems when they join us. One such cat was Grace, (who we have mentioned before), a very small cat who had been handed in as a stray at the vets. Grace was very thin and we thought she was quite old. She had terrible diarrhoea and was initially fed just on fish. Gradually chicken was introduced to her diet before starting to give her special food for

sensitive stomachs.

Stephanie has gradually been adding ordinary cat food to her diet and we are hoping she will soon be on just normal cat food. Looking at Grace now and comparing her with the little cat she was when she joined Grace, lovely friendly girl, now well on the makes us all so very way to good health happy. Grace is such a very loving little cat and really enjoys interacting with her carers. Once she has had a dental, she will be ready to leave for a new home and although we will be sad to see her go, we will be happy to have helped her regain good health and enjoy life with a loving new family.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

After a night of hard frost parts of the course were very slippery and caution was the order of the day, but Cromer’s team of 11 cadets coped well with the conditions and once again enjoyed a successful day.

With an intake of several new cadets in recent months, many were representing the Squadron for the first time and with almost 150 cadets taking part in total, the competition for medals was high.

Pick of the bunch for Cromer on this occasion was the under17 boys’ team of Tom Muckley, 2nd, Alex Downing 4th, Harry Yarbo 7th, and Jay Peebles 10th. These excellent finishing positions enabled them to win the team trophy for their age category, hopefully the first of many this year.

Anglia Mowers, Sheringham, continue to sponsor About with Friends Gardening Service

About with Friends Gardening Service has again benefitted from a donation of gardening equipment from Anglia Mowers, Sheringham.

A Hondy Izy mower was presented to members and staff from the charity by Justin of Anglia Mowers. The new machine will be invaluable once the spring weather arrives and the calls start coming in from our local customers to cut their freshly growing lawns.

About with Friends Gardening Service staff and volunteers support members to carry out weeding, planting, mowing, pruning, hedge cutting and many other gardening tasks. The team also looks after our allotment in East Runton where we grow fruit and vegetables for our catering service and café.

Chief Executive Officer Helen Dalton-Hare said “Huge thanks to Anglia Mowers! We greatly appreciate their continued support for our work, particularly enabling us to reach out to older people in the community who need help with their gardens”.

Cromer and District Garden Society

For the second meeting at our temporary home in The Cottage in Louden Road we were pleased to welcome Charlotte Philcox who is a regular speaker at our monthly meetings. Her topic was fruit and vegetable growing and although much of what we heard was familiar to our members, it was nice to hear a few new tips on how to get the best out of our gardens.

Sam from About with Friends with the new mower

Overstrand Gardening Club

The first meeting of the year on 5 Feb was well attended by members and several visitors too. Members were reminded that today was the start of the Chinese New Year and that this year of the ‘Earth Pig’ would hopefully prove auspicious for growers and gardeners alike!

Our speaker was Mr Howard Lupton, a primrose grower and breeder who not only shared his history of growing but the intricate processes of selecting and breeding plants to obtain different varieties of forms, shapes and colours- doubles, lace- edged, speckled to name a few. The rainbow display of these plants certainly lit up the room on a grey afternoon and reminded us that spring was just around the corner!

Next month we welcome Mr Simon Harrup (Natural Surroundings Holt) with his talk on ‘British Wild Orchids’. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at the Parish Hall, The Londs, Overstrand starting 2.30pm. Visitors welcome (£3) includes light refreshments.

For further information please email overstrandgardeningclub@gmail.com

Heritage varieties of peas can be cropped over a longer period than many newer varieties, potatoes need to be left in the sun for a few hours after harvesting so that they will store better and French beans are more drought resistant than runner beans. Plum trees should not be pruned unless you absolutely have to and Japanese varieties of gooseberries don’t have thorns so harvesting is easier. These are relatively small points on their own but taken together will make growing fruit and vegetables more productive.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 13 March at 7.30pm in The Cottage on Louden Road. Our speaker is Graham Watts from Dale Farm in Dereham and he will be describing how he and his wife have developed his fantastic garden from its earliest days to the present. Members visited his garden in 2017 and everyone agreed that it was one of the best outings we had ever had so it should be a good evening. Visitors are very welcome, cost £2.

Emerald Priscott qualifies into Clapham & Collinge Family Law team have to recruiting and training high quality people at Clapham & Collinge.”

North Norfolk law firm Clapham & Collinge announce trainee solicitor Emerald Priscott has qualified as a Solicitor following the completion of her training contract with the firm. Emerald will join the well-established Family Law team at their Norwich office, but will cover appointments at their Sheringham and North Norfolk offices. Emerald joined the firm in 2015 as a paralegal before starting her training contract.

Neale Grearson, Partner and Head of Family Law at Clapham & Collinge said “I am delighted that Emerald, who is an excellent Solicitor is joining the team. Emerald is a face many will already be familiar with as she has supported the firm’s busy schedule of events and legal seminars, and is already a member of the local Resolution committee. She is a great example of the commitment we

Emerald said “I am delighted to be qualifying as a Solicitor in the Family Team at Clapham and Collinge. It is an exciting time for the team with the expansion of the service areas that we offer. I look forward to continuing to support clients on a whole range of family law issues in the years to come.”

Emerald handles a full spectrum of family matters, including divorce and separation, financial relief proceedings, property disputes between unmarried couples as well as dealing with private law children matters including child arrangements. Emerald has a particular interest in dealing with issues surrounding children and fully advocates the Resolution non adversarial approach in her work. With Emerald moving into the Family Law team, Clapham & Collinge have taken this opportunity to restructure the way in which it delivers Contentious Probate and Family Disputes including

Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 claims. These services have now been brought into the wider Family Department supervised by Neale Grearson and provided by Emerald Priscott. Emerald is keen to develop this area of work in collaboration with the company’s private client department with the change in internal structure aimed to dovetail with likely future changes to Civil Procedure bringing these types of disputes into greater parallel with Family Procedure and the Family Court. Clapham & Collinge Solicitors have acted for Norfolk families for over 60 years and their team of family law solicitors are members of Resolution, active members of 'The Good Divorce Group' in Norwich and hold the 'Help and Support for Separated Families (“HSSF") Mark. Friends of Cromer Museum

Our February meeting was preceded by our AGM. Our President, the Mayor of Cromer David Pritchard, began the meeting by outlining the town council’s success in getting Cromer’s war memorial restored and its place in preserving an important part of the town’s heritage.

Our Chairman, Peter Stibbons, was able to report a successful year for the Friends. Plans are under way to give financial support for the restoration of the ‘Little Swallow’ that is on display in the Museum’s yard, a number of purchases have helped to add to the Museum’s collection of paintings of nineteenth century Cromer and we are optimistic that the Museum will be able to re-open earlier than planned this year.

The AGM was followed by a talk by Nigel Digby on the development of Cromer’s railway stations.

Why was Cromer’s first station built three quarters of a mile from the town centre? It was impossible in the 1870s to overcome the gradients involved in siting the station nearer the centre of

Winter

When Winter’s chill invades our lives, as it does every year, We clothe ourselves against the cold, in our warmest gear. We carry on the best we can, despite the freezing weather, For there is much that must be done, so we must pull together. We keep the home fires burning and shut the curtains tight, Only then can we stay warm while storms rage through the night. There’s wood to chop, coal to dig and paths to clear of snow. We fill hotties, put on flannel sheets, blankets or a throw. We stay warm and well protected, sheltered from the cold, Hoping Winter will end soon and loose its icy hold.

North Norfolk’s famous Bagot goats THE STRAND CLUB On a beautiful spring like day we welcomed Jackie Reeve from Co-op Estate head south for their latest job Planning who gave a most interesting talk on safeguarding our assets after

Norfolk Wildlife Trust to use the 15 billies for habitat management Some of the famous North Norfolk Bagot goats have headed south to continue their valuable conservation and habitat-management work.

The 15 billies have been sent on a long-term loan to heathland near Thetford, on land looked after by Norfolk Wildlife Trust.

The loan follows the sale of a group of billies to Suffolk Wildlife Trust last year.

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “We’re delighted that the wildlife trusts see the same potential benefits as we do. The goats are a cost-effective way of managing vegetation and vulnerable habitats, and they act as a draw for tourists, too.

John Milton, Head of Nature Reserves at Norfolk Wildlife Trust, said “We are grateful to North Norfolk District Council for loaning us the 15 Bagot goats. For some time we have wanted to experiment with grazing by goats to deal with bramble and gorse, which are a particular issue on some areas in the Brecks restored to grass heath from forestry.

NNDC’s herd of goats spend the summer on Cromer cliff, where they have provided a cheap and easy way to keep the undergrowth under control. Nine nannies and three nanny kids are currently grazing at Salthouse Heath, getting ready for their next shift back at the seaside later this year, and the herd is expected to welcome some new kids in the next few days.

The Bagot is a rare breed, so the council and the wildlife trusts are playing a key role in securing the breed’s future.

our death.

She made many recommendations and gave a lot of helpful advice in an easily understood way. She suggested, for instance, that when making your will, if you wish to leave something to a charity it is best to quote a percentage rather than an actual figure. This is because, should circumstances change after you've made the will and you have to go into care, for instance, a named sum may be a large proportion of the remainder which would mean your children would get very little. Another good point was that if you should remarry it is important to remake your will, naming any children from the first marriage as beneficiaries, otherwise they would be ignored in favour of the surviving spouse and if he/she should make a will naming their own children from a previous marriage, yours would miss out altogether upon his/her death. It is a minefield and should be carefully thought about. Using a recognised solicitor who will know all the potential pitfalls is vital.

Jackie also recommended a pre-paid funeral plan but as with a solicitor, care must be taken to choose one which safeguards the money you have lodged with them. Reputable funeral plan companies will have insurance which will cover the money should the firm get into difficulties. A prepaid funeral not only removes a lot of the anxiety and worry from the surviving relatives at a time of grief, but freezes the cost of the funeral. Jackie was extremely informative and we are grateful for her visit and for the professional way she delivered her talk.

Our next meeting will be our AGM, when Miriam and Tony will once again entertain us with a musical quiz and we will deal with any business as quickly as possible!

On 10 April we will have a talk by Neil Storey entitled ‘Grim Tales and Dark Deeds’. This promises to be very entertaining and all are welcome. We charge just ÂŁ3 to visitors as entrance, which includes light refreshments. Please come along and see if you like us. Meetings commence at 2pm at the Sports Pavilion in Overstrand. For further information contact our chairman Jackie Hudson on 01263 720866 or our secretary Chris Wood on 01263 579433.

MASON BECOMES THE 30th PLAYER TO TAKE THE TITLE

Cromer Squash Club hold four internal tournaments during the course of a season and the last one of these, the annual handicap tournament, traditionally takes place in the spring of each year just before the winter season of matches draws to an end. The first tournament was held in 1981 and since then, apart from two years early in the millennium, players of all abilities have taken to the courts each year in a bid to lift the prestigious trophy.

The beauty of the handicap tournament is that players of all abilities, in theory at least, have an equal chance of lifting the trophy and this year two of the higher handicap players, Alan Mason (9) and Jean Spruce (8) fought their way through to the final. The veteran Mason was appearing in his first final while Jean Spruce reached her one final 27 years ago when she was beaten in the 1992 final.

Under the handicapping system Mason, who had recently lost an internal league match against his opponent under the conventional scoring system, went into each game with a 2-0 lead and in a closely contested first game he certainly needed this advantage as he just edged home 16-14. Spruce had in fact opened up a 10-6 lead in this game but she lost eight of the next nine rallies to trail 11-14 and never really recovered.

In the second game Mason raced into a 10-3 lead before taking the game 15-6 and then in the third game which featured some long rallies and some good squash, especially at the front of the court, he led 11-5. Despite Spruce pulling the score back to 9-11 Mason regained the serve and eventually won the game 15-10 and the match 3-0 to take the title for the first time and become the thirtieth different player to become handicap champion.

In the semi finals both players had made full use of the handicap system to beat ‘better’ players in straight games. Jean Spruce had defeated the reigning champion and current club champion, Matthew Jordan while Mason beat the 2017 champion and fellow veteran, John Chandler.

In the earlier rounds there had been some extremely close matches much to the satisfaction of the handicapping committee. Jordan had a terrific ‘last 16’ match against Martin Sanville, who had reached four previous finals, winning 17-15 3-15 5-15 15-12

19-17 and then was given an almighty scare in the quarter-finals before beating Chris Hele 17-15 in the fifth after trailing 1-13 in the fourth. Chandler was taken the distance by Technical Director, Barry Starling before squeaking home 2-15 15-12 15-12 13-15 15-14 and he then went on to avenge his defeat in the 2016 final by beating the four times former champion John Baker 3-2. Mason also had a good win against a former finalist as he beat the 2017 runner-up Alan Harper 3-1 in his quarter final match.

Afterwards the Technical Director, Barry Starling, said “It was good to see so many spectators, including non players, watching the final. Once again the handicapping committee got things right and it was good that two higher handicap players reached the final. Between 1987 and 1997 the tournament was won five times by lady players and I did think that this year we might have had another winner. However, Alan played well, not only in the final itself but also in his earlier matches and he thoroughly deserved his success.”
