No kidding – so cute!

Popular North Norfolk District Council herd welcomes its newest members

North Norfolk has welcomed some cute new arrivals – the first six fluffy kids to be born as part of the district’s Bagot goat-breeding programme.

The latest additions to the popular herd were a bit wobbly on their feet to start with but the adorable kids are now settling well into Norfolk life, and they will be the stars of a forthcoming slot on BBC Radio 4’s Farming Today programme.

It’s the first time officers from North Norfolk District Council have helped rear kids since the Bagots – which are listed as “vulnerable” by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust – arrived in the district in 2016. The nannies and kids are currently having a break away from their habitat management work, at Wiveton Hall, which has itself been in the media spotlight in the past few years thanks to the Normal for Norfolk television series.

No kidding – so cute! Continued from front cover...

The herd was originally brought in to help keep the cliff at Cromer clear, but the Bagots have since caught the eye of Norfolk Wildlife Trust and Suffolk Wildlife Trust, who have bought and borrowed some of the herd for habitat management on their land.

The goats have also become a tourist attraction, and the baby Bagots are sure to prove a hit with the public when they head to Cromer later this year.

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “It was great to see the young goats doing so well, and we are all very proud of the great work that our team is doing with this project.”

Share as One for Mental Health

A new charity has been set up in North Norfolk as a response to the loss of statutory services for the mentally ill, and also because of serious financial cuts to many voluntary organizations who have traditionally supported those who have suffered from mental disorder. The name of the charity is ‘Share as One for Mental Health’.

The objects of the charity are primarily the advancement of psychological well-being, mental health and suicide prevention. We aim to pursue the eradication of the stigma surrounding mental illness, and support the aim of parity of esteem between physical and mental illness.

‘No physical health without mental health’

The aim is to get people together to support each other especially with issues such as advocacy, welfare rights, housing, homelessness, and the need for adequate, swift treatment when in crisis. We also wish to encourage one another to participate in leisure activities which give enjoyment and reduce stress.

Our charity is already in partnership with Cromer Football Club where we intend to help maximize the use of the Clubhouse (which is based right next to the new Cromer Medical Centre) for the benefit of the community.

A weekly drop-in group will meet there, as well as other support groups. We would also like to join with other voluntary organizations to achieve the establishment of a respite sanctuary for the suicidal, such as the one set up by Samaritans in London called the Maytree Sanctuary.

First drop-in group get together will start on Tuesday 2 April at 10am at the Clubhouse, Mill Road, Cromer NR27 0BG - all welcome.

The founders of the charity have either experienced mental illness themselves, or worked either in the voluntary sector or in statutory mental health services. All those who are interested in improving mental health in our community are welcome to join us. If you are interested in joining us or would like to find out more please phone Terry Skyrme on 01263 768676 or Chris Ainsworth on 07389 249616 or email shareasonemail.com.

Classical Guitar Students Celebrate Success

Listening to music is something that most of us would agree is part of our everyday lives, whether it’s the baby shark song, a hit from the 60s, or a stirring symphony. Learning to play an instrument however, is considered by many to be the preserve of the young, with their perceived quick minds and nimble fingers.

As a guitar teacher, I can emphatically say to everyone reading this article that this simply isn’t true, and I’m proud to say that one of my more mature students has proved just that, by passing his Trinity College Grade 1 with distinction at the age of 73.

Colin Woollacott, a retired paramedic from Cromer, along with James Watson, aged 10 from North Walsham, both sat their grade 1 examinations just before Christmas, and were both awarded distinctions, having spent several months tirelessly studying and practicing the pieces

they chose, on the instrument they love.

James, an incredibly talented youngster, who was inspired to take up the classical guitar after watching his grandad play the mandolin, aims to take his playing to Grade 8 and beyond.

While Colin has a more pragmatic approach to his studies - his main goal being to enjoy his playing and let the journey take him where it will. While exams aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, simply learning to play an instrument is a great way to relax, while exercising those little grey cells. Cromer Lifeboat called out to assist fishing boat

Cromer’s all weather lifeboat ‘Lester’ was launched at last month to a report of a fishing boat with problems. Approximately 34 miles northeast of RNLI Cromer’s lifeboat station, was a fishing boat without power. The lifeboat was launched and proceeded to the position given for the fishing boat.

However, whilst they were underway, a call from the Coastguard was received to say a tug in the vicinity was going to tug the fishing boat to Lowestoft.

Cromer’s lifeboat returned to station and was rehoused photo: Paul Russell and made ready for its next call out.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS in in 2019? 20 19 ? SOLICITORS

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2019 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

THE DREAMERS OF DREAMS

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society in Concert

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to be returning to Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 6 April at 7.30pm for their next concert entitled “The Dreamers of Dreams”.

The choir, directed by David Ballard, will be performing works by two of the most successful composers at opposite ends of the 20th Century, namely Sir Edward Elgar and John Rutter.

O’Shaughnessy. The opening lines set the scene “We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams”. Rutter’s popular Requiem is dedicated to his father who had recently died when he completed composing the work in 1985. He combines the traditional Latin text with bible verses in English – notably Psalm 23 “The Lord is My Shepherd” and Psalm 130 “Out of the Deep”.

Elgar’s The Music Makers is a beautiful ode to those who create music with words by Arthur

Cromer Society

The choir will be joined by soprano soloist Zaira Palumbo who recently graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and is a rising star on the local classical

THIS MONTH IN NORTH LODGE PARK HISTORY - March 1929 – Cromer Urban District Council decided the northern portion of Doctor’s Steps Field “be reserved for a putting courseâ€? and the plot of land west of North Lodge be offered as a bowling green (at ÂŁ1 a year for 10 years) to the Ex-Service Men’s and Social Club. 1940 – Putting greens opened for the season at Easter with prices for “other ranks‌at half the usual rateâ€?. 1945 – Air Raid Trench Shelters were filled in. 1953 – Mr W Baker appointed Parks Superintendent (Working) on a salary scale ÂŁ376440, Mrs Baker undertaking office caretaker duties at ÂŁ1 12s 6d pw, succeeding Mr and Mrs Thurston. 1957 – Order was placed for the second model yacht pond of the same size as previously, but with rounded corners, outside the tea rooms. 1968 – CUDC discussed ‘the possibility of installing a children’s racing car track on either the hard tennis courts in North Lodge Park or the upper level of Evington Lawn’ 2005 – Cromer Town Council members were advised that “’NNDC intended selling North Lodge and redeveloping other sites in the area including North Lodge Park’ Ninety years ago this month North Lodge Park’s first Groundsman/Caretaker was appointed, recalled here by his grandchildren Ann and Ralph West ‌

with his keys to let us in, and out again when we left, recalls Ralph.

“F THURSTON a candidate for the post of Caretaker and Gardener on the North Lodge Estate, attended the Council Offices and gave details of his experience and references as to his character. He asked for wages of 50/- a week for himself and wife as caretaker and gardener and 40/- a week until such time as North Lodge would be used as offices. This was AGREED.

Mr and Mrs Thurston were in post when the park opened on 18 May 1929, and lived in North Lodge for 24 years until his retirement in 1953. They brought up two daughters in their flat – Elsie and Phyllis (the Wests’ mother) – both of whom were married from the Lodge, and held their wedding receptions in the Council chamber.

Leslie West – father of Ralph and Ann – outside the North Lodge putting shed where he met their mother Phyllis, daughter of first NLP Groundsman Fred Thurston

“The lounge was on the left-hand side, the kitchen overlooked the putting greens, and the bedrooms were on the east side, remembers Ralph’s sister Ann. “I’d love to go up and have a look around now.

First Groundsman – and last baby He wouldn’t have been the first, but 80-year-old Ralph West is almost certainly the last person to be born in North Lodge Park. Ralph was born in the first-floor apartment of North Lodge, where his maternal grandparents had lived since Fred Thurston was appointed the park’s first Groundsman and Caretaker and his wife Jane engaged as housekeeper in 1929. “Nanny cleaned and polished the Council offices, while Grandad used to stoke the boiler in the basement – he called it the donkey – where he Ann West’s prize-winning fancy also used to grow all the flowers for dress at the 1957 Cromer the park from seed, recalls Ralph.

As a Special Constable, Fred Thurston was allowed a shotgun. “So we’d have rabbit pie every Sunday when we went round, adds Ralph.

He also remembers Fred painstakingly weeding the bowling green by hand, on his knees between lines of string, and being allowed to play the 9-hole course “the best green where the aim was to go round in 18. Nanny was a keen bowls player who won the North Norfolk Ladies Bowling Club cup in 1934.

One particularly vivid memory Carnival, North Lodge Park comes from the war years. Fred Thurston was born “There were a load of big red in 1888 at Minton, near Dereham, and worked as fire extinguishers – about four or five feet high – a gardener at Norwich’s Colney Hall and Melton stored against the curtains in the Council chamber, Constable before becoming the first employee of the says Ralph. “Nanny knocked one over and set it off, park. and trying to drag it outside, stained all the woodwork. Less than six months after Cromer Council had bought the North Lodge estate, the minutes of its first North Lodge Committee meeting of 4 March 1929 record the following:

Fred Thurston’s duties included locking and unlocking all the park gates. “If we went to visit them after the park closed, he had to come down

Ann remembers summer nights playing by the first model yacht pond after the park closed. “Ralph had a big wooden sailing boat with lots of lights, and we had the place to ourselves when it closed. Ralph and Ann West’s link with North Lodge Park started even earlier. Their mother Phyllis, aged just 15, met their father Leslie, 17, at the putting green office when Phyllis took a cup of tea down to her father. They were married seven years later in 1937. Expecting their first child while Leslie was away, Phyllis went home to mum in North Lodge, and thus Ralph was born in the park on 10 February 1939. Today, Ralph jokes he should really have a title: perhaps a plaque wouldn’t be too much to ask.

We held our February meeting on Valentine’s Day which was reflected in our competition which had lots of cuddly teddy bears holding hearts.

Our speaker was Karen Norton with her Guide Dog Holly. Karen told us her story which led to her being given Holly. Karen has been registered as partially sighted since 2000. Holly is nearly 9 years old and will retire from working at 10 but is going to stay with Karen and her family as a pet. Karen did some basic work with Holly to show us how she reacted to commands. Once the harness is put on Holly, she knows it is time to work. A very enjoyable talk which gave us an insight into how a Guide Dog is trained and how funds are always needed to train more dogs.

After our tea break, we held the business part of our meeting. Ten members had attended a Gala Night to Remember in Norwich to celebrate the county federations 100th birthday. We are planning three trips during the summer months. The competition was won by Myra Hobbs, 2nd was Jane Woollard and Rosie Evans and Moira Harding were joint 3rd. Six members received a birthday posy to mark their birthdays during February. Visitors are always welcome; the first visit is free then afterwards £4 a meeting.

Overstrand WI

At our February meeting we were privileged to have a speaker with a long and accurate knowledge of a distinguished and much loved institution on our door step.

Richard Leeds gave us a fact filled talk on the long history of the RNLI with particular reference to Cromer.

All our vehicles are sold with full 12 months MOT, 3 months warranty, serviced & valeted.

The origins of the Cromer Lifeboat are rooted in a gas lit meeting in The Red Lion Pub -electricity only arrived in 1923. Cromer’s first lifeboats were wooden craft, launched from the shore, through boiling surf by manpower alone, propelled only by oars.

Over time, improvements came about, and in 1923, the end of the pier boathouse was completed, and together with the slipway sloping into the water, made launching faster and easier, but recovery, difficult.

Though there are numerous lifeboat stations around our coast, Cromer remains one of the most high profile.

Funded entirely by donations, it is something very special, particularly to us locally.

The offer of government money was politely declined, suspecting that it would come with unwanted tentacles.

The first lifeboat, propelled by 10 oarsmen cost £160. The latest model, with astonishing technology, is rather more expensive. No price though, can be put on the courage of those who travel in her, risking their lives to save those in peril on the sea.

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

We had our 5th Charter Lunch on 3 March at The Dormy House, West Runton.

Thirty three of us sat down to a splendid three course meal in the restaurant. We welcomed fellow Lions from Taverham & District, Norwich North Alpha, Dereham, Beccles, UEA, Attleborough and the newest club in our Zone, Reepham.

I believe I can speak for everyone when I say that the food was very good indeed and the service, considering the number of diners was also good.

Steve, the owner of the Dormy House, donated two free tickets to any London Show. These were auctioned and the £70 paid will go straight to the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital towards their new Parent’s Room.

If anyone would like to have fun whilst fundraising then please telephone our Secretary, Brian Harris, on 01263 821276, for more information.

North East Norfolk Bird Club

Felbrigg Park - mid-week walk on Wednesday 20 March 9am–11am, this walk caters for all levels of ability. We will take a leisurely walk around the Park & Lake, route dependent on the local bird and other wildlife likely to be present on the day. Please wear clothing appropriate to the weather - footpaths in Felbrigg can be muddy at any time of the year. Meet at Sexton's Lodge car park, off Lion's Mouth, NR11 8PS at the western end of the estate. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. As usual, children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. Kelling Heath, Quags and Muckleburgh Hill on Saturday 23 March 9am– 1pm – meet at the Kelling Heath car park off Holgate Hill, Holt NR25 7ER, Grid Reference OS ODL TG 100419, between the Kelling Estate garden centre (ex-EMCY) and Weybourne. The slightly obscured turn into the car park is on the western side of the road in a dip near the summit. Note: Walking boots with ankle support and grippy soles are advised as there will be short sections of hills to ascend and descend. A scope will be useful but not essential. Distance: 6.5 miles Today's walk will take us across the heath where we will look for the heath's special birds such as Woodlark, Dartford Warbler and Turtle Dove. We should also find Stonechat, Tree Pipit, tit flocks and may be Crossbills; raptors overhead are likely too. After some time on the heath we will walk northwards through the deciduous woodlands to cross the Coast Road to Muckleburgh Hill and Fox Hill looking for spring migrants such as Wheatears. We will return to Kelling Heath and the cars by another woodland path. Children are welcome if accompanied by wellbehaved adults, but we regret no dogs. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. The walk will be led by Janice Darch. Indoor meeting a talk by Andy Clements - Birds' interactions with the landscape: BTO research at global to local scales on Thursday 28 March 7.30pm–9.30pm - the talk covers local monitoring and what evidence from Atlas and other surveys tells us about changes in distribution and abundance, and then moves to uncovering the mysteries of migration, using various species including cuckoos, swifts, spotted flycatchers and nightingales. Andy joined the Nature Conservancy Council in 1982, and his 24 years with the Government nature conservation agency included field-work on upland birds, Communications and European work and securing Lottery funds for local community areas for wildlife. After species work was seconded to the Department of the Environment, Andy returned to English Nature as Director of Protected Areas with overall responsibility for nationally and internationally important wildlife sites. He also led the successful defence of Dibden Bay at Public Enquiry. After assisting the setting up in early 2006 of Natural England, as Director of Science, Evidence & Policy, Andy undertook freelance strategic environmental consultancy before coming to BTO as Director in August 2007. His work at BTO has included leadership of the BTO Strategy 2009-2014, representing BTO in Government and ensuring our strong profile alongside other Third Sector wildlife organisations. Andy sits on the Cambridge Conservation Initiative Steering Group www.conservation .cam.ac.uk, helping to link BTO scientific research with policy. He is a Board Member of Natural England and a Trustee of the National Biodiversity Network.

Northrepps 'Poppyland' Branch of The Royal British Legion

Our first Branch meeting of this year was held on 4 March and was very well attended - we were very pleased to welcome five new members. As no one has come forward to claim the first prize of our raffle, a large grocery hamper, at our recent table top sale, members have donated this to the Food Bank at Cromer. We now have a very busy programme for the remainder of this year and will be taking part in many forthcoming events locally. We are very proud to be taking part in Armed Forces Day on Saturday 29 June, having been invited by North Walsham Branch. Members and guests will be attending our Branch Annual Dinner at Northrepps Country Cottage Hotel on 14th of this month. On 1 April we will be welcoming to our Branch Colin Chambers and members from North Walsham Branch and Peter Howe and members from Wymondham Branch who will be talking to us about their taking part in the GP90 last year. Colin laid our wreath and Peter carried our Standard. This will be a very interesting evening and it is great that Branches are able to liaise with one another. This is the way forward in the 21st century. New members are welcome - why not come along and join us. For further information contact Lorna on 01263 579633.

Northrepps Village Trust We are pleased to announce that a charitable trust fund to help projects, events and groups within Northrepps is now under way. This new fund will be known as Northrepps Village Trust (NVT) and inaugurated with the £900+ raised by last year’s panto.

There will be a brand new NVT website, going live in April, detailing the Trust, its aims, how to get involved in events and fundraising, and how

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

to apply for funds.

More exciting news … to coincide with the launch of NVT, we will be hosting a fundraising event on Sunday 5 May.

This fun event will be ‘Walk Northrepps 2019’, aimed at all ages and abilities, families with children and walkers who enjoy the paths and byways in and around this beautiful part of Norfolk. Essentially a sponsored walk, there will be a choice of routes from just a mile around the village up to approximately 12 miles that

We had a very enjoyable evening when Jacqui Aldous demonstrated on ‘That’s Entertainment Act IV’.

takes in all the adjoining parishes. All routes will start and finish at the village hall. The walks will take in the opportunity for refreshments at local cafes and pubs. The emphasis will be on a fun day with a route quiz and ‘instagram’ photo opportunities. Details are yet to be finalised, but will be posted here, and around the village soon, with a full press release to follow. We hope you will join us and ‘Walk Northrepps 2019’!

Her first arrangement was unusual in that it had no foliage. It was a stunning design of pink lisianthus and blue clematis in a green vase. This was followed by a black and white tribute to Laurel and Hardy. Black oasis was filled with black bamboo, white sticks and green chrysanthemums (no white ones were available, so we pretended!), pretty skimmia with white berries, viburnum and variegated euonymus were the foliage. The whole thing was completed with a pair of black boots each filled with a white polyanthus. Her third design contained begonia leaves, fatsia, ivy fatshedera, red skimia. Spotted laurel, rosemary, bay and lovely orange chrysanthemums with the orange rose Confidential. She then added apples and sprouts on sticks. A friend marked it 10 out of 10.

The next arrangement was in a basket made at a workshop with Hans Haverkamp and filled with arum lilies, laurel, variegated box, rubus tri colour and pittosporum. The flowers were pink kangaroo paw and yellow gerberas. The fifth and much-admired was in a metal container with pittosporum, white anthuriums, deep blue delphiums and blue agapanthus.

The last was a tribute to Moulin Rouge with palm leaves, yellow twigs, pittosporum, red carnations, red lilies, yellow cannas, a wonderful yellow orchid and for a final flourish red ostrich feathers. Best in show in the competition ‘All that’s Natural’ was Janice Pope. Our big event this year is on 15 May at Northrepps Country Hotel with national demonstrator Gill McGregor. For enquiries and tickets please phone 01263 513408. Next month our meeting is at 7.20pm in the Junior School when we can watch Wendy Goodliff on ‘Inspired by Nature’. Our free meeting to visitors will be in April this year, details next time.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Stephanie is still having problems with the phone so if you do call and she does not get back to you please call again. Sometimes it is obvious there is a problem but this is often not the case. For instance, I phoned Stephanie earlier today and left a message. The answer phone seemed to be working; however, when speaking to her later she advised that she could not hear my message and the answer phone cut out before it had finished. If you are expecting her to call back this may not be the problem and she could have already replied. There are many instances when people come back advising they had not heard from her when she has in fact left a message on their answer phone. Please therefore remember to check for messages before calling again.

We are now coming to that time of the year when young unneutered males stray from home in search of a female. When we receive a call about a lost cat, one of the questions we ask, is what sex is it, and has it been neutered. Often the cat gets lost and does not know its way home. It is also a time when many sadly do not return because they

are involved in accidents. To avoid the possibility of losing your cat for either reason, please do get him neutered. Fortunately this does not happen in every instance. One young male cat, that was due to be neutered under our special neutering scheme, recently disappeared for three weeks and his owner was very anxious as she did not think she would see him again. On his return, however, an appointment was quickly made at the vets and he has now been neutered.

Isabella, a friendly young cat who loves likes to play and wants lots of fuss and attention

The situation is different with female cats. Although she may escape to find a mate when she starts to ‘call’, it is very unlikely that she will travel far, and will probably return after a few days, more than likely, pregnant. Not all pregnancies end happily though and because there are already too many cats needing homes, best avoided if possible. A female can get pregnant from four months old, far too young for her to be having babies as she has not finished growing herself.

If you have a young cat please consider their welfare and contact us if you need help with the neutering.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

Hedgehog Haven

Dolly (pictured) came in from Southrepps on 19 February. She was found in the garden very underweight at 400 gms I would think she had emerged from hibernation. She now weighs a healthy 750 gms.

When hedgehogs are curled up, a good sign is that if they are a healthy weight, their shape should be round like a football. A tapered end, like a rugby ball, is an underweight and possibly sick hog and needs help.

Dolly should be ready for release at the end of March beginning of April depending on the weather.

East Anglian Air Ambulance launch momentous campaign to become a 24/7 service

East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has launched an ambitious plan to become a 24/7 helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) provider by 2020.

The charity currently operates 365-days-a-year but not 24-hours-a-day, meaning that if an incident happened between midnight and 07:00 there is currently no HEMS provision in the region. The charity is aiming to cover this gap and become a full 24/7 HEMS service by 2020. To do that they need to raise an additional £1 million a year to fund the operation. The type of incidents the charity attend – serious road traffic collisions, cardiac arrests, traumatic injuries and other medical emergencies do not stop when their crew go offline. While a 24/7 service seemed to make sense, the charity needed to be sure, so have been gathering evidence to prove it. They worked with the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST), who task them, to review incidents over the course of a year where critical care was required but unavailable. They also assessed the need first-hand by trialling an overnight service via rapid response vehicle (RRV) four days a week from the Norwich base. The results of this work confirmed a significant region-wide need for overnight critical care, particularly in rural Norfolk. In the first twelve months of the overnight trial they attended 220 missions, but they say that with the helicopter they could do so much more.

Matthew Jones, Director of Operations at EAAA, said “Becoming a 24/7 service by air will provide the people of East Anglia with a service that has not previously been available. By operating 24/7 we believe that we will treat approximately 600 more patients every year. Patient care is at the heart of everything we do at EAAA, so if we can be there for 600 more people each year and further reduce the impact of trauma and medical emergencies in the community then this is a great step forward for us. We currently need to raise £12M a year to operate our service, and it will

cost an additional £1m a year to fund a full 24/7 operation.”

Steve Jones has witnessed firsthand the care that EAAA provide. Steve was riding his motorcycle in Norfolk, when a car he overtook turned into his path catapulting him from his motorbike, head-first through a brick wall and into a ditch filled with water. Steve was unconscious and submerged under the water.

The Anglia One crew was activated and, travelling by helicopter, they arrived on scene 21 minutes later. By this time the ditch was filled with Steve’s blood and the team knew they had to get him out quickly. Steve was making gurgling noises but remained unconscious. The crew made the decision to sedate and intubate him to take control of his breathing. He was then packaged and flown to Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Steve had suffered such a traumatic head injury that the team thought he would not survive. Steve remained in hospital for 10 weeks, but last November he walked in to the Norwich base to meet the EAAA team and the EEAST land paramedics who also provided treatment on scene. Not only has he suffered no lasting affects, but he is also in the process of finishing his PhD in Software Engineering. Steve and his wife

Claire said; “My wife and I are extremely grateful for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and their East of England Ambulance Service colleagues. I am in no doubt that these heroes saved my life that day and I am optimistic and positive for the future which includes completing the last parts of my PhD and embarking on a Software Engineering industrial research career.” If Steve’s accident had happened between the hours of midnight and 7am he would not have the received the treatment he did, and it is unlikely that he would have survived. The charity say they are already incredibly grateful to the community for all their support, but are asking for help to raise the additional £1m a year needed to operate 24/7 so they can save more lives like Steve’s. If you would like to find out more about the campaign or to donate, please visit www.mission247.co.uk. Mini-tummy tuck at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic

Are you bothered by the appearance of excess fat and skin in your lower abdomen? Are you struggling to get in shape after pregnancy, childbirth or ‘C’ section operation?

Mini-tummy tuck at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic may just be the solution you are looking for.

What is a mini tummy tuck or miniabdominoplasty procedure? It is a procedure to address stubborn area of stretched, sagging skin and fat on your lower tummy. Pregnancy, aging and genetics are common culprits behind a belly pouch and unfortunately, diet and exercise are often ineffective in helping to get rid of it. If you are bothered by the appearance of your lower abdomen, a mini tummy tuck may help you get the results you want with a relatively short recovery.

How is mini-tummy tuck different from a full tummy tuck?

Full tummy tuck is a major operation performed under general anaesthesia. It is suitable for patients after massive weight loss, patients with severe stretch marks all over their abdomen or in patients with significant muscle wall laxity or abdominal hernias. It requires a longer scar, wide undermining which risks blood supply to the skin hence liposuction is not carried out during this procedure. There is a scar around the belly button as it has to be moved. It is a major procedure that provides a tighter but not necessary slimmer appearance. Mini tummy tuck is a good option in patients with skin excess in lower part of their belly. Mini tummy tuck is a less invasive option. This uses a relatively short incision in the same area of a C-section scar and avoids the incision around the belly button. This is often performed on women who have mild sagging or post-baby pouch, stretch marks from pregnancy, or C-section scarring. This procedure focuses only on the area below the belly button, not the entire abdomen. We nearly always add liposuction to our tummy tucks to sculpt the body in 3-dimension. The technique known also as mini lipo-abdominoplasty with no undermining, makes it possible to safely combine lipo-sculpture of the abdomen with lower abdomen skin tightening. Unlike traditional tummy tucks, this operation allows for more contouring of the abdomen.

It gives a result that is both tight and shapely.

What are the advantages of a miniabdominoplasty? • Enhancing of the body shape and silhouette as a result of liposuction. • Preservation of the perforating blood vessels. • Lower rate of complications. • Easier surgery performances. • Natural profiles. • Preservation of supra-pubic skin sensitivity. • More security for smokers and post bariatric surgeries.

Am I a good candidate for a mini tummy tuck? A mini tummy tuck may be a great option if you are healthy and at a stable weight, without a large excess of abdominal skin. Typically, the best candidates are primarily concerned about loose skin or a protruding lower belly only if you have significant stretched, sagging skin or muscles, a full tummy tuck may achieve better results. Mini tummy tuck surgery is not a substitute for weight loss or a healthy exercise program. Although the results are lasting, the outcome can be influenced by changes in your weight following surgery. If you are planning substantial weight loss or if you are considering future pregnancy, you may be advised to postpone mini tummy tuck surgery.

Regular readers may remember the story we ran back in January about little Harry Deeba who was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma in January 2018 and whose parents Carly and Ali were appealing for support with their attempt to raise £239,000 by the end of April to access a vaccine in New York that is showing promising signs in reducing the chances of relapse, giving Harry the best chance at living cancer-free.

Carly has contacted us to say the fundraising is going well and there are lots of events coming up which are detailed on Harry's Facebook page Harry vs Neuroblastoma.

Santa Cycle Ride raised £1550 for About with Friends and NANSA

The Trunch Fatboys Cycling Club annual charity Santa cycle ride raised a total of £1550 to be divided between About with Friends, Cromer and NANSA.

Dressed as Santas and Elves, 32 cyclists from local towns and villages, Norwich and Australia (one Santa!) toured five pubs in North Norfolk on 9 December. They received a warm welcome at Hill House, Happisburgh, Walcott Lighthouse, The Ship Inn, Mundesley, Trunch Crown and finished at Trunch Social Club for a well-deserved buffet laid on by the riders and friends.

Maurice Page, Trunch Fatboys Chairman, said that support from the pubs, their customers and from passers by was great. The cyclists were respectful of other traffic and everyone had a fantastic day.
