DJ praises Cromer Social Club A well-known DJ linked to Bob Marley has praised Cromer Social Club for helping him after a near-death accident.

DJ Madhatter, real name of NME Journalist/author Paul Wellings said he was thinking about retiring after a recent bad fall, but the Social Club wanted him to play.

Mr Wellings, whose cult punk-reggae group The Anti Social Workers toured with Peter Tosh (who had a hit single with Mick Jagger and was from Bob Marley's Wailers), has decided to do a SKA reggae show for the Social Club.

The DJ, who hails from London, said 'other venues and clubs weren't so kind after my fall so I cancelled all work, but the lovely people at the Social Club came back to me and wanted to reschedule the show I'd had to cancel with them because of my near fatal accident. So I'm bringing a show to Cromer with everything from Bob Marley's early wailers Ska to Two-tone like Madness. It'd be good to see all the rude boys and girls skanking out to the good vibes and paying back the loyalty of Cromer Social Club.'

DJ Madhatter's 'Ska Sessions' show at Cromer Social Club is on Easter Sunday 21 April from 3pm - 6pm.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Most people are now aware that when they offer a new home to one of our cats and kittens, they will have been to one of our vets for a health check, been neutered, if old enough and this has not already been done, been vaccinated and chipped. Vouchers will be issued to one of our vets for them to be neutered if they are not old enough to be done. They also leave with four weeks free pet insurance which they will be given the opportunity to continue. This is especially important for older cats as some companies will not cover them. We cannot advise people whether or not they should continue with the company concerned but indicate that the four-week period gives them the chance to compare with other companies before making a decision, if they wish to continue insuring their new family member. We do, however, point out it is important when making comparisons, to make sure they are looking at similar levels of cover. It is also important to look at the small print to see what is being covered for the level of premium being quoted. For instance, some will cover an illness up to a fixed amount each year, while at another level the problem will be covered however much it may cost. In all instances, companies will not cover existing conditions and there is also usually an excess payable (again this may be a one-off payment or could be for each illness covered). You may decide not to take out insurance on your pet but do please consider how you will pay for any treatment which may be required either from illness or an unfortunate accident. Unfortunately, we cannot help with this.

Veterinary medicine has come a long way in the last few years, not least in the treatment for fleas, worms, ticks etc. Gone are the days when it was necessary to struggle to get your much-loved companion to allow you to pop a pill down its throat. Nowadays there are spot on treatments readily available to cover all eventualities, for those of us with cats unwilling to suffer this indignity to their sensibilities. Although the treatments are available in different combinations there is usually one to suit their particular needs. Please, however, do discuss this with your veterinary surgery, as they are the only people who can advise you which treatment will be suitable for your pet.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

The Strand Club

On Tuesday 5 March we had a most informative talk from Mr Francis Farrow on ‘The History of Beeston Common’.

The AGM of the Strand Club took place on 13 March. It was well attended and to our delight we were able to welcome two new members. We hope they will thoroughly enjoy the speakers and activities we have lined up for the coming year.

While having worked for very many years as a marine geophysicist (with a background in both geology and botany), in his spare time onshore Francis has worked on the management of Beeston Common and recording its wildlife.

Our Chairman took us through last year's programme, outlining some particular favourites and reminding us of some excellent speakers. We loved our special visit to Templewood, when Eddie Anderson introduced us to the people who had built and lived in the magnificent house via their portraits. He then went on to talk about the fantastic ceiling in the salon and the stories behind its design.

His talk traced the formation of the Common through various periods of human history, and how it was affected by grazing, collecting fuel, hunting, farming the surrounding land or by housebuilding alongside. He then looked at the recent nature conservation and restoration work and the gains and losses encountered since earlier studies, such as that undertaken by a local teacher, Miss Danvers. Her photographs of c.1940 can be compared with those taken in 2018 and landscape changes can be seen, such as woodland where before there was just open grassland.

The club outing was to Gressenhall Workhouse and Museum in the summer and this was very popular and much enjoyed by everyone, particularly the black piglets and the magnificent Shire horses.

We welcomed Stephanie and Ali from Seal and Shore Watch in April who brought slides of some of the many seals rescued along our coast. They reminded us of the importance of being aware of how we dispose of our rubbish - several seals being slowly strangled by discarded frisbees and fishing lines.

Frances showed what a variety there now is of plants, birds and insects. Animals such as muntjacs, rabbits and roe deer graze there and even adders can be found on the heath!

The Old Rock Shop Bistro provided us with, and served, an excellent Spring Lunch in May and so impressed were we that we have booked them again for this year. Highly recommended.

In 1983 the Beeston Common Management Group was formed. In fact, the site is an SSSI (Special Site of Scientific Interest) and part of the Norfolk Lowland Valley Fens international SAC (Special Area of Conservation). Francis showed that all the recent work has impressively increased biodiversity, including many flowers and types of butterfly. Although the future is uncertain, particularly in terms of funding, it is still a site with great potential.

After the business was concluded we welcomed our own Miriam and Tony who entertained us with a musical quiz based on television theme tunes which Tony played and which delighted us and made us think in equal measure.

Every now and then Miriam would sing a classic love song from a much loved show and transported us with her beautiful soaring voice - every note true and sweet and full of feeling.

Our Lunch Secretary, Dave Vickery thanked Francis for his very interesting talk.

Our Club is a happy, friendly place and we look forward to welcoming visitors (and further new members!). Please come and see if you like us our next meeting is 10 April, commencing at 2pm in the Sports Pavilion in Overstrand. We charge just £3 which includes refreshments. Our April speaker will be Neil Storey, entertaining us with a talk entitled Grim Tales ad Dark Deeds. We hope to see you there!

Our next meeting at The Links Hotel, West Runton, will be on Tuesday 2 April, when our speaker will be Mr Stephen Scott-Fawcett, on the subject of “Antarctica now and in the future”.

If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our future meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

Cromer WI

Our speaker for March was Philip West with an illustrated journey from Wells- next-the-Sea to Cromer, visiting the villages in between.

Some photographs were modern and some gave an insight into the fishing boats which worked along the coast.

Before the railway arrived, Wells was a very busy port for malt and barley and in 1903 the iconic granary was built to store it. Boats from Cromer also carried coal and corn, again the coming of the railway stopped most of it.

Our competition was Music - Rosie Evans was 1st with a ceramic golly band, Myra Hobbs was 2nd with a musical stagecoach and Jill Betz with a Swiss Chalet Music box and Yvonne Hoggarth with a Stylophone were joint 3rd.

Six members received birthday posies as they celebrate in March.

Our next meeting is on 11 April at The Cottage, Louden Road when our speaker will be M Pennington with a talk entitled Pearls are my Passion. Visitors are always welcome - your first visit is free then subsequent meetings are £4.

Stainer’s ‘Crucifixion’ at Thorpe Market Church

Museum of the Broads re-opens for 2019!

The Museum of the Broads opens for the 2019 season on Wednesday 27 March and this year commemorates the 60th anniversary of the closure of the Lost Railway of the Broads.

Stainer’s ‘The Crucifixion’ will take place on Good Friday 19 April at St Margaret’s Church in Thorpe Market.

The rehearsal will begin at 3pm with a break between the rehearsal and the performance, which will take place at 6.30pm. There is no charge for taking part. If you are familiar with this work and would like to join the choir for this occasion please contact cantamussingers@gmail.com to confirm your attendance at the workshop and to reserve your score. Conductor Alan Morris and organist Geoffrey Hunter.

A number of you use the A149 on a regular basis, but did you know that up to 60 years’ ago, Catfield Station part of it was a railway line? The line started at Great Yarmouth Beach station which was opposite the Imperial Hotel in Great Yarmouth. It connected the Broads with the Midlands and many holiday makers arrived by train for their holidays. Potter Heigham even had its own halt just for the hire boat clients!

John Stainer (1840-1901) was an English composer and organist, including at St. Pauls Cathedral, London. His oratorio ‘The Crucifixion’ is amongst the most popular of all English choral works and portrays the events of Good Friday.

The Museum of the Broads is commemorating this line in 2019 with a special exhibition focusing on the story of the railway. The exhibition will include items from Barton House Railway, the M&GN Circle, the 32A Model Railway Club, and local collectors. If you like anything to do with steam or trains, then this is one for you!

Scored for Tenor and Bass soloists, mixed choir and organ, this meditational oratorio contains recitatives, solos, rousing choruses and congregational hymns. The centrepiece is the evocative anthem “God so loved the world”. The first ever performance of this work was at Marylebone Church in 1887. It is an oratorio that has stood the test of time and has been regularly sung at churches during Passiontide. It was first sung at St. Margaret’s Thorpe Market in 1997.

What’s more the Museum will be running its popular Easter Trail during the school holidays with prizes for those who complete the trail. Such great fun!

Check out their events at www.museumofthebroads.org.uk . Catch everything on Twitter or Facebook @MuseumBroads. Go on #makeitstalham this April.

Our Annual Branch Dinner was held at Northrepps Country Cottage Hotel on 14 March and was very well attended by members and their guests. Our Guest of Honour was that very well-known Military Collector and Historian from Cromer, Mr. John Needham.

Preparations are now going ahead, as we have been invited to exhibit in Northrepps Flower Festival which will take place at St. Mary's Church Northrepps on 3, 4 and 5 May. We are honoured and delighted to be included in this event, and we will be holding a tombola for the Church to say 'thank you' to them for working and helping us. Members feel that this is a great example of The Legion out there promoting its work and supporting the local community.

Our next meeting is on 1 April at Northrepps Country Cottage Hotel at 7pm for 7.30pm. Why not come along and join us. A warm welcome awaits you. For further details contact Lorna on 01263 579633.

Cromer Businesses Turn Back Time for 60s Event

With less than a fortnight to go until Cromer rewinds the clock to the 1960s the town’s Chamber of Trade is encouraging local businesses to dive in and get involved as the event grows to include the whole town.

The event has been organised by Cromer Pier, with a full timetable of entertainment and events available at www.cromerpier.co.uk, complete with an original Routemaster double decker red bus to transport you into 1960s Cromer from the outside world. Pick up is from the War Memorial in Holt at 10:15am and Sheringham Station at 10:45am arriving outside Cromer Church in the town centre at 11am. Return journey leaves Cromer at 4:30pm. Advance tickets priced at £7 return are essential as there will be no tickets available on board. Tickets can be purchased from Cromer Pier online or at the box office.

In town businesses are being encouraged to decorate their shop windows with 60s style memorabilia, include favourite dishes of the decade on café & restaurant menus and of course, dress for the occasion!

‘We’re encouraging individual businesses to be as creative as they can to help draw people into Cromer for town events. The more Cromer businesses pull together as a whole, the more we all stand to benefit as we turn the 60s weekend into a town-wide event’ said Sam Grout, President of Cromer Chamber of Trade and Business

The Chamber of Trade is running a 60s window competition, in addition the public can vote on their favourite 60s style window. Entry forms will be available from businesses around the town. Leanne from Lune Boutique and Ali Ewbank of Happy Feet have teamed up to

organise the competition and compile a list of suggestions for businesses that might be stuck for ideas. ‘The great thing about the 60s is there are so many different themes for businesses to pick from. From 60s music icons to Mods and Rockers, Flower Power and Ban the Bomb symbols to 60s TV, seaside holiday themes and transport…not forgetting 60s fashion!’ adds Leanne.

The competition will run from Monday 25 March – Monday 1 April with fancy dress on Saturday 30 March. Entry is open to all Cromer businesses.

Report by Jeremy Roughton

Christmas Unwrapped at St Martin’s Church, Cromer on 14 December 2018 This evening of carols, group singing and other entertainments compered by Simon Fenn was well-supported by Cromer parishioners.

Simon gave an address on the Spirit of Christmas and how this can so easily be lost in the commercial aspects of the Christmas period and the important role of the Church in spreading the true message of Christmas while not dampening the spirit.

Four members of ‘Team Porter’ gave a beautiful and well-rehearsed harmony of a Christmas carol, Katie Porter read some seasonal verse and the Gospel Choir sang and led carols.

Guest artiste, at great expense, Dave Walker gave an amusing monologue of an agitated, expectant father Joseph and how he had arrived at this point, an imminently expectant wife Mary, a travel to the census and the total lack of accommodation which led to Mary being in labour in the stable next door as he fretted outside. The sketch ended appropriately, and on cue, with a cry from the new-born baby Jesus.

The audience were kept well refreshed between acts by an abundance of seasonal food, tea coffee and mulled wine.

Simon brought the evening to a close by thanking all those involved. A very well-thought out and presented evening.

Jeremy Roughton, Parish Member (the writer apologises if he has not acknowledged any contributors to the evening).

East Anglian Air Ambulance launch 24 mile trek challenge as part of campaign to become 24/7

East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has launched a brand new 24 mile or 24K trek challenge as part of its campaign to become a 24/7 service and is encouraging people who are ready to take on a challenge to sign up.

The event, which is called Trek 24, is to be held in North Norfolk and will take place on Sunday 8 September during National Air Ambulance Week. Groups and individual participants will have two exciting challenges to choose from :

£1m a year and we have launched Trek 24 to help us work towards achieving this annual target. Whether you want to support our 24/7 mission or just take part in a challenging and fun event, we can guarantee it will be one not to miss!

To book your early bird tickets or for more information visit www.trek-24.co.uk.

Friends of Cromer Museum

The final meeting for this winter’s series of talks took the form of a presentation by Rob Young and Maxine Collis from North Norfolk District Council on the Deep History Coast project.

• A 24 mile route starting south of West Runton and ending at Holkham Hall • A 24k route starting in Cley and ending at Holkham Hall

For participants taking part in the 24km route, early bird tickets cost ÂŁ20 with a minimum sponsorship requirement of ÂŁ200. For participants taking part in the 24 mile route, early bird tickets cost ÂŁ25 with a minimum sponsorship requirement of ÂŁ250.

North Norfolk is home to the most significant coastline in Britain for understanding the evolution of humankind in Europe. The West Runton mammoth and the Happisburgh hand axe are well known to many people as evidence of human occupation of this area in the distant past.

Trekkers will receive a packed lunch, refreshments on route, a glass of bubbly (or soft drink alternative) and a hot meal at the finish line, as well as a medal to celebrate the completion of the challenge.

There will be seven ‘uplift stations’ along the way with refreshment stops and cheering squads to keeping trekkers refueled and motivated. Early bird tickets will be available until midnight Sunday 2nd June and are sold on a first come first served basis.

The project aims to raise the profile of the coastline between Weybourne and Cart Gap by providing visitors with information specific to eleven destination points along the way. It is hoped to spread interest beyond the larger towns to smaller but significant locations along the 36 kms of the Deep History Coast. Using an app that doesn’t need wi-fi will allow visitors to go on ten walks covering the whole coastline. The point planned for Cromer will be on the Runton Road car park and will inform visitors of the fauna and flora of Doggerland, the land bridge that connected East Anglia to the Continent until about 10,000 years ago.

Catrina Miller, Events Manager at East Anglian Air Ambulance, said: “We are delighted to officially launch our brand new event Trek 24 in support of our campaign to become a 24/7 service. Currently our operation runs from 7am until midnight, meaning there is a 7 hour gap in air ambulance coverage in the East of England. By extending our flying hours round the clock, we estimate that we could be there for up to 600 more patients every year.

The Information Centre in Cromer will be re-furbished and will become the hub for this project. Cromer Museum’s geology gallery will be an important focus for those keen to extend their knowledge further and with this in mind it was pleasing to be able to tell the meeting that the Friends of Cromer Museum will be providing money for an interactive screen in the museum to help bring to life this important project. Our thanks go to Cromer Fireworks for a grant of £350 towards the cost of this screen.

To become a 24/7 service we do however need to raise an additional

Cromer and District Garden Society

In the summer of 2017 some of our members visited Dale Farm in Dereham to see the garden that had been developed by Graham Watts and his wife Sally. It was a pleasure to welcome Mr Watts to our March meeting where he described how he and his wife had brought the garden back into use after years of neglect. His aim was to have the garden good enough to open for the National Garden Scheme within three years and by hard work and dedication this was achieved in 2010.

took their place.

A key feature of these beds was the need to provide verticals such as verbascums and hydrangeas and these were supplemented in time with informal statues and garden furniture to provide contrast. Since 2010 the garden has been open every year on the last Sunday in July and over £65,000 has been collected for the charities supported by the NGS in that time. The garden is open this year and is well worth a visit. Some of our members will be going back for a second visit to see what changes have taken place since 2017. I’m sure they will not be disappointed.

Much preparation was necessary Our next meeting is on Wednesday including sampling the soil to see 10 April at 7.30pm in The Cottage which parts of the two acre site were The garden at Dale Farm in Dereham on Louden Road. An opportunity arose last year for this family run business to take on the old Santander premises next door. It would open up the small ground floor, and with the slope and automatic door, would give better access for all.

many happy, excited customers waiting to come and browse the new space. The everyday cards and gifts are now downstairs, as well as a new children's area. There's lots of new cards, gifts and brands to browse across all 3 floors with still more to come this year. We have expanded areas such as men's and children's cards and gifts.

"It's still a work in progress but it's evolving. Thank you for all your continuing support. It wouldn't happen without you. We love what we do, so, thank you all very much," said Max and Emma.

So, in November a doorway was knocked through and work began in January transforming the dark old Bank into a light and welcoming space. It wasn't without setbacks as banks are made to be impenetrable! Doors and walls that had to be removed were a major job. The owners have done all the work themselves with help from family and friends which is greatly appreciated.

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios celebrates its 25th year in 2019

One of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country is set to celebrate its 25th anniversary this year with more than 430 artists flinging open their studio doors to the public. The 16-day celebration of Norfolk’s artistic community runs from Saturday 25 May to Sunday 9 June.

The free event will see artists throughout the county opening their doors to the public to exhibit, sell and talk about their work and practice.

Having established itself as one of the largest open studios schemes in the country, it gives visitors the opportunity to see new art, meet artists, and - with many of the works on display being for sale - to buy original artworks directly from their creators.

scheme across 250 venues. The event annually attracts thousands of visitors and in 2018 more than 36,000 people flocked to studios across Norfolk.

Numerous associated trails take place, allowing visitors to enjoy several studios in one day. Art demonstrations, private views, workshops and talks also make up this key event. Internationally renowned artists as well as artists new to the scheme take part each year. Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2019 will take place between Saturday 25 May and Sunday 9 June 2019.

RNLI Lifelong Supporters Receive Cromer Town Award

Every year many volunteers support the RNLI in a variety of ways. This is usually unrecognised by the local community but enhances the work of the charity to the wider inhabitants of many towns. On Wednesday 13 March, Cromer Town Council held their annual awards evening.

In recognition of their efforts in supporting RNLI Cromer over thirty years until Tony retired as chairman earlier this year, Mr and Mrs Webster received a Cromer Honour Award. Their knowledge of Cromer and its connection to the RNLI is amazing.

During his long tenure as Chairman Tony will be remembered for :

• meeting the Duke of Kent at naming ceremonies of Cromer all weather lifeboats

in 1986 and 2008

• overseeing several Inshore Lifeboat naming ceremonies.

• Tony oversaw the removal of the old life boathouse and the rebuilding of the present lifeboat house.

• He invited the late Ronnie Corbett to open the Henry Blogg Museum. (Ronnie had started his stage career in 1953 in Cromer).

• Liaised with the late Peter Cadbury to achieve the return of the H F Bailey – Henry Bloggs lifeboat in Cromer during the war years. This is now the number 1 exhibit in the Henry Blogg Museum.

During his chairman tenure, his wife Peggy was Chair of the Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild and provided invaluable support to Tony.

After the ceremony Tony said “It has been and remains our great privilege to be involved with the RNLI and events within Cromer over a long period. We thank Cromer Town Council for this wonderful award”.

Cromer Marrams bowls Club News from the Club House ...

The final touches to the Clubhouse and green are nearly complete ready for opening on Saturday 13 April at 10am. Subscriptions for the season have been held at £65 for the 22 weeks, less than £3 a week for being able to roll up every day, play in up to 42 league games and up to 45 friendly/club games plus cup matches and intra club competitions. What a bargain!

The short mat season is almost over with members competing for the league (Bob still leads!) and cup winners on Wednesday afternoons until 10 April.

The future dates of the quiz are 11 April (2.30pm). The final may now take place on Tuesday 23 April. Twelve members are in contention for the six final places!

Details of fixtures, results, history, honours, and club news/photos can be accessed at cromermarramsbowlsclub.com or more details from Edna 01263 511155.

London Marathon for Lymphoma Action

Emily Bowyer from Cromer, has been lucky enough to be selected to run the London Marathon to raise money for Lymphoma Action, along with boyfriend Seb Matthews.

The Charity resonates deeply with Emily’s family as her Mum, Jayne, has had both Hodgkins Lymphoma and Thyroid Cancer. Thankfully she was one of the lucky ones who beat them both. A raffle is taking place in aid of Lymphoma Action. Over 50 prizes are available to win, including a Bungee Jump, Dunston Hall Day Pass, Highball Climbing Wall Experience, Whitlingham Outdoor Adventure Centre Pass and many local businesses donating prizes. Make sure you head over to Cromer Gift Shop or Woodlands Leisure in Sheringham to buy your tickets.

If you are in a position to donate some sponsorship, it can be done in different ways, either through Emily’s JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/emily-bowyer4 or Seb’s JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/Seb-Matthews. Or you can call into Cromer Gift Shop (at the top of Garden Street) and fill in the sponsorship from or pop a coin, or two, into the Lymphoma charity tin. Any size of donations will be gratefully received for a worthwhile cause.

A sponsorship form can also be found at Woodlands Leisure Centre where Emily works as a Swim Teacher.
