Proposal unveiled for £4.15million Cancer Centre at Cromer Hospital Macmillan Cancer Support invests £2.2 million to support growing number of people living with cancer in North Norfolk.

A £4.15million proposal to build a state-of-the-art cancer care and support centre at Cromer and District Hospital has been unveiled today. Macmillan Cancer Support has been working with Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to develop proposals for the centre.

In the 2015 local cancer strategy, potential demand for cancer services within the Trust was forecast to increase by over 200% over ten years.

Currently most people from the Cromer area have to travel to Norwich for treatment and the new centre will enable more people to access cancer treatment and support closer to home.

Flower Power Returns to Cromer for 60s Festival Thousands turned out for Cromer’s 60s Festival at the end of last month.

There was a packed programme including vintage stalls on the pier and prom, dancing by Marlene’s School of Dance, live music organised by Rock the Lobster, classic vehicles including 60s scooters, motorcycles and cars and music from the era in North Lodge Park.

Town centre businesses also entered into the spirit with shops decorated and staff in costume.

The Beatles would have been proud!

What do you need to do first when someone dies? Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr Solicitors

I am often asked what needs to be done as a first step when a family member or loved one dies.

Obviously, it depends on the person’s circumstances as to what are the top priorities, but it goes without saying that the first thing that needs attention is the funeral. The funeral director will deal with the arrangements, but it is worth checking the Will to see if there are any specific funeral wishes. This can be as simple as a preference for burial or cremation but often there is more detail such as where the funeral should take place, form of service, choice of hymns and music, where the remains are to scattered or interred, and sometimes very individual requests. The death must be registered before the funeral can take place. This is usually done by a close family member at a registry office of the Norfolk County Council. There are, of course, rules. You will need to give details of their place and date of birth, their occupation and all the names, by which they (and their widow or deceased spouse) have been known, It is important to make sure that the house is secure and insured. Sadly, burglaries do take place so it can also be a good idea to take items of sentimental or financial value elsewhere for safekeeping. Often elderly

people under-insure their house and its contents, so do check the level of cover. Sometimes the security arrangements are insufficient to meet the insurance company’s requirements, so do not overlook this. After 60 days most insurance companies impose conditions and restrict cover on empty properties. If this is a worry, we can undertake property checks and have useful local reliable contacts and knowledge. There are then the practical matters to deal with such as ensuring that household bills continue to be paid and that the house is kept warm enough so the pipes do not freeze and burst or other problems arise.

If the person has left a Will, the solicitors holding it will need to see the death certificate and have the written authority of all the executors to release it or copies of it. An executor’s authority arises from the will and so exists immediately from the death. A Grant of Probate is often needed to “prove” that the executor(s) have the legal power to administer the estate. If a person has died without a Will they are “intestate” and no one has authority to deal with anything until the Grant of Letters of Administration is issued by the probate court. However, practicality must prevail and

arrangements can usually be made to keep things ticking over until either the grant issues or the nearest family members entitled under the intestacy rules get matters moving. Probate solicitors are here to help when somebody passes away. Their experience is not just in dealing with and advising on the legal process but also the practical and family side of matters.

Easter at St Margaret’s Church Thorpe Market is fast approaching

On Good Friday 19 April John Stainer’s “The Crucifixion” will be sung by Cantamus Choir augmented by other singers who enjoy singing this much-loved traditional Easter oratorio.

John Stainer (1840-1901) was an English composer and organist, including at St. Pauls Cathedral, London. His oratorio ‘The Crucifixion’ is amongst the most popular of all English choral works and portrays the events of Good Friday. Scored for Tenor and Bass soloists, mixed choir and organ, this meditational oratorio contains recitatives, solos, rousing choruses and congregational hymns. The centrepiece is the evocative anthem ‘God so loved the world’. The first ever performance of this work was at Marylebone Church in 1887.

North Norfolk District Council is hosting an exhibition by Norfolk painter Leslie Nockels, with her work on display at its offices in Cromer.

Cromer-born Leslie trained at the Norwich School of Art and West of England College of Art in Bristol (now both universities), graduating in Sculpture, and returned to Cromer in 1976. After taking time out to bring up her two children, fifteen years ago Leslie decided to take the plunge and become a full-time artist. Ever since that day she has been working from a 1870s railway carriage in her garden.

Volunteering can greatly benefit you as it allows you to learn new skills, help others and is an excellent addition to your CV. Above all, it is great fun and you get to meet loads of interesting people!

Her work aims to capture the natural beauty of Cromer and the surrounding area. She regularly paints Cromer Pier and the town’s lovely coastline but in this First Floor Gallery exhibition, Felbrigg takes centre stage.

The last three autumns found her painting waves of colour inspired by sunlight bursting through the swathes of autumn leaves such as the ‘Victory V’ plantation of beech trees in the Great Wood at Felbrigg. This large Felbrigg ‘Victory V’ painting was chosen for a heritage exhibition at Norwich Castle last spring.

Police are appealing for help to trace the family of a woman who died at her home address last month.

The exhibition runs until April 19 at NNDC’s Holt Road offices. The First Floor Gallery is open to the public 8.30am-5pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays; 10am-5pm on Wednesdays; and 8.30am4.30pm on Fridays.

74-year-old Sheila Sherwood who lived at an address in Music House Lane in Norwich died on Monday 18 March 2019.

There were no suspicious circumstances and despite carrying out extensive enquiries no next-of-kin have been identified.

A Council spokesman said “The council seeks to offer free opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit gallery, giving staff and visitors the opportunity to see a variety of work. Six exhibitions are held annually”.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We have mentioned many times that all our cats and kittens are either chipped with micro-chips purchased by the branch, before leaving us for their new homes, or were chipped by previous families. When they leave us for their new homes, we register the chips on-line with the microchip registering company. We always ask the new owner to provide at least one telephone number and an e-mail address if they use a computer. From past experience the more ways of contacting the owner the company has, the more chance there is of contacting them should their beloved pet go missing and is subsequently ‘found’. It is also important to ensure this information is kept up to date when people move or change the contact details. We often see appeals on websites etc to find the owner of an animal that has been handed in, either to a vet or a rescue charity, which has been chipped but the owner cannot be contacted from the information held by the relevant company holding the animal’s details. In some instances, although chipped, the chip has never been registered so there are no contact details available (this happens more often with dogs than cats).

One such instance is Pogba, a lovely young male cat, recently handed into our care as a stray. He was handed in from another area to that where he was registered as living but, unfortunately, we received no response from his owner via the contact details held by the company concerned. Pogba has not been registered as missing so he will now visit our vets for a health check and vaccination before being put up for adoption. Please always ensure that your details are registered and are up to date with the relevant company to avoid the heartache of not being reunited with your pet.

A considerable number of cats come into care as ‘strays’ and they are often in poor condition when they arrive. One such cat was Charlie who was half bald when he arrived. The person who handed him in had been

looking after him for some time and advised us that when he turned up, he had hardly any hair at all. She would have given him a home if her own cat would have accepted him but continued to care for him until we had a space. Spending many Tyler, Fiv positive, loves to sit on a lap, needs months in care and on an indoor home special food Charlie was put up for adoption once he had a clean bill of health from his vet. Charlie is now happily settled in his new home and once again enjoying being a much loved and pampered pet.

Hedgehog Haven

Bert was found by the side of a road with a bloody nose. Suspecting a mouth injury, I took him to Westover Vets in North Walsham where an x-ray revealed a fracture to his upper jaw.

He has had a tooth removed and is managing to eat quite well on a diet of mashed wet cat food.

Three days later Sonic came in with a very similar injury. He had two teeth removed today 1 April so hopefully he also will now be able to manage to eat.

Sam and Chelsie from The Art House Café in Cromer will be taking part in two charity challenges this year. They will be taking part in the Norwich 10k Run on the 21st July and will be climbing the National Three Peaks on the 24th August (in 24 hours).

Unfortunately this is quite a common injury from taking a glancing blow from a moving vehicle as hedgehogs are just emerging from hibernation and are moving about slower than normal.

More than 200 knives seized during police week of action

More than 200 knives have been seized during a week of action aimed at reducing knife crime.

Norfolk police was one of 44 forces involved in Operation Sceptre between Monday 11 March and Sunday 17 March – a national campaign which took place to highlight the risks that carrying a blade can bring, as well as targeting offenders who use and carry knives.

Investigations are ongoing but this incident highlights how important it is to target those who carry knives to prevent it from happening again. It is also vital we continue to work with our Safer Schools Partnership to educate young people about the risks carrying a blade can bring.

During the week officers held a knife surrender initiative where members of the public were able to hand over knives at Public Enquiry Offices across the county without fear of prosecution.

A total of 237 knives were handed in, including machetes, samurai swords, daggers, hunting knives and flick knives.

Officers also carried out high visibility patrols targeting those who carry knives. There were 114 stop/searches with 26 knives seized and 11 people arrested for possession of a bladed article. Four of those have since been charged. They are :

• Aaron Evans, aged 36 and of Blickling Road in Norwich. Evans has also been charged with possession of a Class A drug.

• Jordan Drake, aged 18 and of Bulls Lane in Gorleston.

• Kobi Simmons-Cunningham, aged 21 and from London. Simmons-Cunningham has

March is going out with its best spell of a changeable month and this may scrape into the first few days of April but thereafter it will become unsettled and often cool or cold.

There is nothing unusual about this but under new data protection legislation there are much stricter guidelines as to how a business goes about getting your consent. Whatever the reason, if it’s not done properly, then the request for consent will be invalid.

Are you the kind of individual who can help care for a child that isn’t their own? Someone who can put a roof over their heads, food on their plates, and hope in their hearts?

There are hundreds of children seeking a foster home in Norfolk. All of them need someone they can talk to and trust, someone who appreciates them as individuals and is prepared to celebrate their achievements and successes with them.

Before giving your consent, it’s really important to know what to look for. The purpose(s) for which you are allowing your personal data to be used must be clear. If there is more than one purpose, then you must be able to agree to each one separately. Your consent must be given freely which means you should never feel under pressure to give it.

THIS MONTH IN NORTH LODGE PARK HISTORY - APRIL

1932 Electrically lighting the putting green was agreed at a cost of £29 7s plus £15 for poles.

1934 The Council decided to retain the Rocket House site which had been offered to them, and opened to the public after development the following Easter.

1935 Repairs to the Rocket House Shelter were in progress, the top level of the site was being laid out in flower beds, alterations to the steps were being made, and final designs were approved for the tea rooms and shops at the foot of the Rocket House site.

1938 Phrenologist ‘Alexine’ looking for “sites available for his purpose” was offered a bathing hut on the Rocket House site with access from the Gangway for the season.

1948 Cromer Advertising Association rented the thatched kiosk as an Information Bureau at £1 a week. New Blue Danube Café tenants were Messrs K C Theoharides & C Leonidas for £125 a year (plus rates)

1960 ‘Bona fide’ OAPs were to be given free putting (and pier entrance) up to the end of May and after the second week of September.

1970 Toys and equipment selected for the new Children’s Corner included two 3-bay Children’s Swings, a special See-Saw, a number of wheeled toys, and a £10 hut to store the toys and equipment.

A special treat this month – the first hand memories of Margaret Hunter, or Baker as she was when her family moved into North Lodge in the summer of 1953 where they lived until 1960.

live in the first floor flat at North Lodge when my father Billy Baker was appointed Parks Superintendent and my mother Elsie Caretaker for the Council Offices.

Our flat was selfcontained with its own front door at the top of the stairs and consisted of three small bedrooms (mine overlooked the bowling green), a bay-windowed lounge facing the sea, bathroom, and kitchen looking up the drive.

Father had a gang of men Arnold Ward, Lenny Griffin, Edgar Savoury, Michael White, and Bob Cox who cared for the Norwich Road Grass Courts.

Extra staff were taken on in the summer for the putting green kiosks, originally in the little single storey extension to the side of North Lodge and a second one on the distant, over the bridge, course.

The ground staff’s domain was the basement, which would have been the domestic offices when the Hoare family lived there. I remember a row of servant call bells hanging on the wall.

The area between the 9-hole course in front of North Lodge and the tennis courts was a roughly grassed area with open-air Shakespeare performances in the 1950s, when I also remember the Dagenham Girl Pipers and other Scottish marching bands performing on the hard courts.

In 1953 the old boating lake was next to Rede’s House, together with a lethal roundabout and a Laburnum Tree. The site where the replacement

model yacht pond was built had a bandstand. Every Sunday afternoon in the summer a local band entertained.

When the new boating lake was built a new bandstand was built on the Hard Tennis Courts, providing a large audience arena and again chairs were put out and taken down for events. I remember waking up one morning in my bedroom overlooking the bowling green as chaos reigned below.

A herd of bullocks had escaped from Bird’s Meadow (today’s Meadow car park/ Information Office) and went along Louden Road-Mount Street-Gangway into North Lodge Park and got onto the bowling green. Suffice to say there was quite a bit of surface damage.

The last duty of the day for Father was to lock all the gates at sundown. As a young girl going off to Guides I had a gate key in my pocket!

My final memory as a small child is the cluster of retired fishermen who used to congregate on the cliff top by the Watch House and view the returning crab boats. Old Jack Davies, Cutler Balls, Charlie Brackenbury, and of course Henry Blogg.

Bakers moved out of North Lodge in 1960 when the flat became too small for the growing family. Mr and Mrs Gibbons moved in as replacement resident caretaker. Billy Baker continued to work as Parks Superintendent until 1968 when he took over Lubbock’s Florist shop at the top of the Gangway. New Standard Bearer at Cromer Royal British Legion

At the March meeting of the Cromer & District Branch of the Royal British Legion, their Branch Standard was formerly handed to their new Standard Bearer, Bethan Phillip-Pritchard. Conducting the ceremony in front of members and a County representative was the Branch Chairman, Hilary Cox MBE.

Bethan has attended training sessions held by the County training officer and Parade Marshall over recent months and has already carried a Royal British Legion Standard at various ceremonies including the Royal Norfolk Show, GP90 (Great Pilgrimage) in Ypres, Belgium and the annual rededication of the County Standard

at Aylsham. Part of her duties also includes attending the funerals of members of the Legion or the Armed Forces.

Bethan said “It has been such a marvellous honour to be formerly recognised as the Branch Standard Bearer. I am so grateful to everyone who has helped me with my training, in order to achieve the required benchmark”.

In September, 19 year old Bethan said that she will be moving to read Law at University but will return to Cromer to continue her duties as Standard Bearer.

In accepting the charge of the Standard, the Branch Chairman, Hilary Cox MBE explained to Bethan and the members the significance of the colours; “The Union Flag, in the top left-hand corner, is

Since becoming the Branch Standard Bearer her first duty was to take the Standard to have the ‘Ypres 2018’ scroll added. This was awarded to branches among the 1200 who attended the event in Ypres, Belgium in August last year.

Cromer Lifeboat called out to guard vessel

Late on Saturday 29 March Cromer’s all weather lifeboat ‘Lester’ was launched to a report of the Isla B’s steering failed. The ‘Isla B’ guards fishing areas but the ship was a lot more weighty because of the gear they had on there.

The crew of the offshore lifeboat, Lester, was launched at around 9.45pm and initially asked to assist the ex-trawler into harbour at Great Yarmouth.

Later Mr Leeds said the Cromer crew were finished by 2am (Daylight Savings Time).

We are going to escort her down to Yarmouth and into harbour. They’re looking at the possibilities of what’s going to happen there now.”

An update was received by Kim Platford, Gorleston lifeboat crew member, said “we were called at 10.56pm to reports of a 110 tonne guard vessel that had steering failure. The ship was originally going to come into Great Yarmouth assisted by Cromer and Gorleston but was unable to, as the harbour wouldn’t allow her inside past 1am. The size of the ship was putting both the lifeboats at risk. We helped her in front and Cromer followed at her stern. The decision was made that she couldn’t get in to Lowestoft and she was told to drop anchor two miles off Great Yarmouth. She decided to overrule and wanted to go on to her home port, Whitstable. We were stood down and she carried on with her onward journey. Cromer were stood down as we approached Hemsby and Caister.”

A dozen bundles of joy are additions to popular North Norfolk herd

Easter Fun at Holt Country Park

This month the picturesque Holt Country Park will host several fun-filled activities for children, run by North Norfolk District Council’s countryside team.

North Norfolk District Council’s Bagot goats are now getting ready for the summer

The number of kids born as part of North Norfolk District Council’s Bagot goat-breeding programme has hit a final tally of 12.

A broad range of activities will include an Easter Treasure Hunt and a Woodland Activity day – providing something for every youngster.

The park will play host to an exciting Easter Treasure Hunt for children of all ages on Tuesday, 16 April and will see children exploring the ‘jewels of the woods’, focusing on the beautiful creations of nature.

The dozen baby animals are all doing well and are enjoying life with their new friends as the herd prepares for another busy summer of habitat management.

In addition to the treasure hunt there will be other fun activities such as Easter themed crafts and face painting. There will be two sessions, one at 10am to 12pm and the other at 1pm to 3pm, both cost £4 per child, with face painting at £1.50. Parents must accompany children throughout.

It’s the first time NNDC has helped rear kids since the Bagots – which are listed as ‘vulnerable’ by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust – first arrived in 2016. The 12 new arrivals are equally spilt, with six boys and six girls.

Holt Country Park will then be the centre stage for a Woodland Activity Day on Thursday, 18 April. For £10 a child, your youngster can leave their parents at home and join our ranger team for a day of fun filled activities in the woods. The children will learn a wide range of useful skills from den building, wildlife identification, survival skills, orienteering and craft making, running from 10am to 2pm.

The herd was originally brought in to help keep the cliff at Cromer clear, but the Bagots have since caught the eye of Norfolk Wildlife Trust and Suffolk Wildlife Trust, who have bought and borrowed some of the herd for habitat management on their land.

The goats have also become a tourist attraction, and the 12 baby Bagots are sure to prove a hit with the public when they head to Cromer later this year.

Clean sweep for Cromer students as they tidy up the town

For our March meeting we were fortunate to have a local historian , ex head teacher of the well renowned Belfry School in Overstrand, Tim Bennett who gave an illustrated talk about Gervase Phinn, author and schools inspector ,and now something of a showman.

Hundreds of students have done their bit to keep Cromer tidy as the whole school gave the town and beach a sparkling spring clean.

As our speaker read well-chosen extracts from some of Phinn’s books, an audience of sober WI ladies was almost beside themselves in helpless laughter.

Gervase Phinn a Yorkshireman, took his inspiration from the settings and colourful characters who populated it. His book titles often mirrored the locations, such as ‘The Other Side of the Dale’.

His text was wonderfully descriptive, immersing us in its humour. One example featured a young pupil who repeatedly said that a relative of his had ‘65 roses’. Uncomprehending initially, Mr Phinn realized what the lad was conveying, was in fact cystic fibrosis – rather less pleasant than aromatic flowers.

The Cromer Academy pupils filled dozens of black bags with litter as they blitzed the town’s beaches, streets, pier, and promenade on Friday 29 March, with year groups heading out in shifts to tackle a particular area.

Amongst the plastic bottles, drinks cans, and crisp packets, they collected some more unusual litter including a frying pan and plastic cutlery tray.

The following business seemed rather pale in comparison, but amongst other things , an invitation for four of our members had been received from a lady soon to be holidaying locally, for afternoon tea and cakes – right up our street! Possible activities for Norfolk Day 27 July and a wellbeing meeting in August were discussed.

We all have a duty to keep our town clean and tidy, particularly given the impact of plastics on marine life. We had over 570 students out and about, in our town and all along the coastline, cleaning up and collecting litter. I am incredibly proud of them and the positive impact they've made in our community."

18 March - 23 April On 18 March, along with other Norfolk Libraries, Mundesley Library launched The Great Big Read, Norfolkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual reading promotion which will be promoting the World Book Night booklist of 23 titles which includes crime thrillers, film tie-ins, some of the best new novels written for young people and even a book set in Norfolk by the popular crime writer Elly Griffiths.

I am trying to find anyone who has, or knows someone who has, Sjogren’s Syndrome (pronounced Shurgren’s). It is an autoimmune disease and can have many symptoms such as dry eyes, dry throat and problems with swallowing. It usually appears, mainly in women, between the ages of 40 and 60+. I’m not enquiringly for any official reason, just that I would like to hear from others about their treatments, comparisons etc. And maybe at a later date have an informal support group. Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

As we have now collected all the money raised at the Mannington Hall Fun Day last year and with the ongoing help from by ten other Lions Clubs in Norfolk we have now reached our target and are now going to present a cheque for £6,500 to the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital. This is the total of our joint fundraising over the last eighteen months to purchase a portable ECG machine for the Hospital.

The cheque was presented at the beginning of the month.

We are still helping other local charities and in this fundraising year under the current president we will furnish a new Parents’ Room at the Jenny Lind. Parents of very sick children need a quiet, comfortable space of their own in which to relax at a time of very great stress and often sadness.

A huge thank you to Nelson Quilters who have made over twenty small quilts for us for children’s beds and incubators, we are extremely grateful for their generosity.

This weekend, Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 April, we are opening for member registration at 10am. Hopefully the green will be open for a roll-up!

Subscriptions for the season have been held at £65 for the 22 week season, less than £3 a week for being able to roll up every day, play in up to 42 league games and up to 45 friendly/club games plus cup matches and intra

club competitions. What a bargain!

The first of a series of Weekend Walks, organised and led by Walk Cromer, took place on Saturday 23 March.

The walk, from Cromer pier to Overstrand and back, was blessed with ideal walking weather and the views from the lighthouse back to Cromer and onto Overstrand were spectacular.

Advantage was taken of the westerly wind to help blow us along the cliff – top route to Overstrand, and as the tide was out, the return was made via the beach. To add further interest to the walk, walkers were given a printed Information Guide. This contained fascinating information about features and places seen during the walk, including the iconic Cromer pier, the former coastguard
