Friends of North Lodge Park Plank Sponsorship Public Appeal launched at AGM
Planning permission for the playful connection project in North Lodge Park was approved in February, and outline terms for a 10 year lease have been agreed - a major step in developing an exciting future for the Park.
At the AGM for the Friends of North Lodge Park on Wednesday 24 April, details of the project were presented to the community. There was overwhelming support for the project from the meeting.
“Through the commitment of the community, and a significant contribution from Cromer Town Council, over half the money is in place”, said Samantha Annison chair of the Friends group, “and we are looking for grants to cover much of the shortfall. However, Upper Sheringham there is a need for further public contributions to make the project a reality”.

HANDYMAN Clint Brown Property Services
We welcomed Sam Lowe from Overstrand Garden Centre to our April meeting and he gave a practical demonstration of how to plant up hanging baskets. With warmer temperatures not far off it is important to prepare well in advance for the summer ahead and members were not disappointed with the advice given.
Sam recommended using 14” baskets and thinking in terms of having at least a dozen plants in each. Liners made from recycled plastic are best as they are bird proof and with luck may be reused the following year. Good potting compost rather than all-purpose compost is best and adding slow release food and water retaining granules will make maintenance easier. Don’t overfill with compost as this will make watering more difficult. Trailing geraniums, verbenas and petunias are ideal for sunny spots and trailing nepetas and trailing and upright fuchsias are fine in shadier spots. The four baskets that Sam planted up on the night look rather plain at the moment but in a month or two will look spectacular.
Daytime 07736 516644 Evening 01263 663042
The garden centre in Overstrand makes up about 500 hanging baskets each year so they are obviously a favourite with local gardeners who prefer readymade baskets. After all, not everyone has the time or expertise to make their own. It was interesting to hear that they are now using plastic pots at the garden centre that can be recycled. The black pots we are used to have been a problem as few if any local authorities will recycle them so things are looking up as far as the use of plastic in the garden is concerned.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 8 May at 7.30pm in “The Cottage” on Louden Road. Our speaker is Martyn Davey who has recently retired as head of horticulture at Easton College. ‘Propagation – Plants for Free’ is his topic so another interesting evening is in prospect. Visitors are very welcome. Cost £2.

All who knew Joyce in Overstrand Evening WI ‘family’ have been saddened by her passing, though she had been ill and housebound for some time. Having moved here from the Midlands, she joined us in late 1984, soon after we started up. She was steadfast in all she did and became a committee member. She held true to our WI Principles and was always willing to help in whatever way she could, being quietly effective.
She loved her family of three and was usually found in her large and beautiful garden. When not outdoors she was contentedly baking in her huge kitchen.
Silver & Ward will continue to be one of the few solicitors to offer ALL the following services:
Though the quiet type, she was thoughtful and would often bring welcome refreshments to those who manned our WI stall at Overstrand sports field car boot sales.
She will be missed but many fond memories will live on.

Evan’s crab
What do you get when you mix a fast bowler with a two Rosette restaurant‌? To book your table call 01263512412 or visit thegrovecromer.co.uk
“Those first couple of years were quite an experience, remembers Richard Graveling, a former teammate of Evan’s at Cromer, “so it was always good to see a friendly face whenever ET and Kerrie came in for dinner.
Evan Tuck and Reis Khalil
Well, this summer you could end up with a delicious ginger, coriander and chilli crab dish, courtesy of an old friendship and the local cricket club‌ As a fearsome paceman for Cromer and Norfolk CC, Evan Tuck was already a good friend of the Graveling family, and when the Grove opened its restaurant in 2012 Evan and his wife Kerrie were one of the first couples to visit.
“ET is a great chef himself and, after tasting his crab, I thought that it had to go onto the summer menu (with some beautiful finishing touches from our head chef Reis Khalil).
“It’s a lovely recipe from the (now extinct) Red Lion in Upper Sheringham, says Evan. “I’ve added some coriander, cheese and chillies, experimented lots to get the flavours just right, and I’m now really happy with it.
“I love cooking just as much as I used to enjoy knocking over opposition batsmen for Cromer and I’m chuffed to see one of my home efforts on the menu!
For one crab: One teaspoon finely chopped ginger. One teaspoon olive oil. One teaspoon finely chopped coriander. Dash of salt and pepper. One tablespoon single cream. Mix with fork loosely. Return crab to cleaned shell and smooth into space. Grate Norfolk Mardler cheese; enough to cover the crab. Finely chop half a mild chilli and shake with cheese. Cover crab. Bake on 180c for 10 mins, checking cheese has melted.

Brian is bringing his collection of old village pictures and giving them the big screen effect.
This is an opportunity for past parishioners and present-day villagers to see Thorpe Market through the eyes of others. Pictures of when life was quieter, less traffic, cows walking down the A149 and Dad’s Army.
If anyone has any photos that they care to share please send scans of them to info@thorpemarket.org.uk so that they can be added to the programme. A chance to
remember and reminisce.
Do visit www.thorpemarket.org.uk where Anthony Beck’s farming diaries that relate to Green Farm make very interesting reading. There are no tickets for this event. My Garden in Spring
The prunus tree is very bright, a glorious picture of pink and white, dwarf tulips and forget-me-nots mingle together, they don’t seem to mind the inclement weather. The camellia bush has become quite tall, its creamy-white flowers grow along the brick wall. The birds take a dip in the little round pond, then spread out their wings and sing a sweet song. It’s lovely to see the garden in spring, and the pleasure and joy this season brings. Diane Berthelot

All Saints Church Beeston Regis John Hurst Exhibition
During the early Bank Holiday weekend, 4 -6 May, well known professional watercolourist and Sheringham resident, John Hurst, will be holding a special exhibition in Beeston Regis Church.
Aimed at raising funds for this beautiful coastal church, John has painted a new, colourful and detailed watercolour of the church, from which fine prints are to be published. Much of the proceeds from the original painting and all the profits from the prints are to be donated by the artist, who in the past has supported the national minsters of York, Durham and Lincoln in the same manner.
Last summer, John attended a flower festival at the church with his wife, Jacqui and was touched by the welcoming ethos that he encountered there. Over coffee and cake, fund raising for a new toilet came up in conversation with Assistant Curate, Revd Ruth Adamson. Having completed a major national charity project for Sir Ian Botham’s Foundation via his last watercolour book, ‘On My Way’, John was looking for the opportunity to support a local charity, so this seemed a very worthy initiative. The original painting will be on sale at the exhibition, alongside a new collection of John’s maritime and Norfolk studies with an opportunity to reserve prints.
The exhibition will be open on Saturday 4 and Monday 6 May 10am - 4pm and Sunday 5 May noon – 4pm. Refreshments will be available. For more information see www.marshlandarts.co.uk

RAF Radar Museum has become yesterday’s news… Greg Hayman continued “Following wrapping chips! its most successful year ever, the RAF Radar Museum has opened for the 2019 season with an air of celebration as it has recently taken over the top spot as the best local visitor attraction according to those that know - the people who visit it. We couldn’t wish for a better start to the year!”
In a novel marketing ploy, the RAF Radar museum has produced its own newspaper so that fish and chips can we wrapped up in it.
In collaboration with Ken’s Fish and Chip shop in Wroxham in the Broads, the museum is providing the printed newsprint wrappers for the takeaway service.
The newspaper includes a range of museum news and carries a voucher for a £1 off admission for visitors bringing the voucher with them to the museum.
Despite being a top visitor attraction, it has not always been well known as the museum sits on the site of one of our most Top Secret military bases and didn't even appear on a map until recently. That all changed when the Cold War ended and part of the base became a museum.
Museum marketing manager Greg Hayman said “We were looking for interesting ways to connect with potential visitors and we thought we would try this idea to combine great eating with a sense of nostalgia for how chips were wrapped in yesteryear.
“If it proves popular we hope to extend it throughout the season and maybe to chip shops in other towns. We like to think that we are making news and this way we are, quite literally!”
Chip shop manager Michael said “We thought this was a great idea and offers our customers something a bit different and we are teaming up with a great local visitor attraction so it’s a win win for us both!”
The ‘newspaper’ chip paper has been designed
and printed by Century Printers in Stalham.
In other news, the Radar Museum is celebrating because it has become the number 1 visitor attraction in according to TripAdvisor.
The museum is a great place to visit for a day out in Norfolk and is fun for all the family. There are over 20 exhibition rooms as well as outdoor exhibits. Plus, there are three free presentations running throughout the day, one in the WWII Operations Room and one in the Cold War Operations Room and one on the Bloodhound surface to air missile system. You can relive the experience of RAF staff who monitored the skies keeping us safe during the war and during the threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union.

On Tuesday 2 April we had a most interesting talk from Stephen Scott-Fawcett on the subject of “Antarctica - past, present and future”.
Half of people in the country don’t have wills so on their death what happens to their assets is left to the arbitrary “intestacy” rules. Even fewer have a Lasting Power of Attorney so if they become incapable of dealing with their own finances no-one can step in to help.
As well as being an author and editor of various polar books and academic papers, Stephen is an adviser to the Scott Polar research Institute in Cambridge.
He told us how there is evidence of vegetation in Antarctica’s very distant past when there was apparently a tropical climate, during four ‘green’ periods.
One in two marriages end in divorce so pre nuptial agreements are becoming an essential part of wedding planning.
Parents are lending money to children and their partners so they can buy a home and get on the property ladder but without their children thinking about what will happen if they split up. The Bank of Mum and Dad are now increasingly seeking a more commercial and less emotional approach to safeguarding financial arrangements for their children - and themselves.
However, he went on to discuss a more recent period, called ‘The Great White’ by early explorers, ie from the mid-19th century onwards. The first explorers investigated some of the coastline (from a distance!) but it was only in 1898 that the first human actually landed there on terra firma. Between then and 1922 people from 49 different nations came to explore and often to lay claim to sections of Antarctica.
Life is no longer simple! People have extended families. Receive inherited wealth. Live longer! So essential legal planning is an all the year necessity but we leave it to a Spring Clean to think about often difficult and unpalatable things.
Gradually more and more scientific work was done (a period called ‘The Great White Laboratory’) and in 1959 to 1961 the Antarctic Treaty was first signed and then ratified, in order to enable visitors to come and to make further scientific work possible without, in principle, political factors getting in the way. Since 1961 much further scientific work has been done, such as research into the hole in the ozone layer.
The Antarctic Treaty System, limits mining, fishing and other activities, but it remains to be seen how long this system will function as Antarctica contains great mineral wealth.
Stephen concluded his talk with a series of remarkable photos of Antarctica.
On behalf of the 35 members present (as well as visitors), Dave Vickery thanked Stephen for his extremely interesting talk.
We shall next meet at The Links Hotel, West Runton, on Tuesday 7 May when our speaker will be Mark Frosdick, on ‘Goats on a Slope’ (referring to the Bagot goats at Cromer). If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our future meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

well with his head almost severed and resting on his back - not dressed as an Englishman so thought to be a Dutch sailor.... In 1577 black dogs were attacking and killing villagers and when they tried to come into a church in Blythburgh were firmly kept out. Later black scratch marks were found on the wooden door which are still there to this day. Such a marvellous fund of tales and fables, marvellously told. We would wholeheartedly recommend Neil Storey to any club or group who requires a speaker. To return to the present day with its sunshine and laughter, friendship and tea was something of a shock, though a nice one! Our next meeting will be on 8 May and will be our Spring Lunch. The next meeting where we can welcome visitors will be on 10 July when Norfolk Wild Encounters will visit us to show and talk about their birds of prey. We are looking forward to this and if you would like to join us, please do. We meet in the Sports Pavilion in Overstrand at 2pm and entrance is £3. For further information please contact Jackie Hudson, our Chairman, on 01263 720866, or Chris Wood, our Secretary, on 01263 579433.
The Strand Club welcomed Neil Storey who was to regale us with local tales and legends. We found ourselves laughing uproariously at the way he told them, acting so dramatically whilst telling us of body snatchers, ghostly horses and carriages, black dogs and American presidents. Springheeled Jack has never been explained. He apparently jumped out at girls from bushes in the dark but also could be seen jumping right over arches and keeping pace with the Cromer express as it thundered down the track. George Washington (whose family came from Norfolk) wore wooden false teeth before he became president and they were green with mould. Once he had been elected and had a bit of money to spend he bought some "Waterloo Dentures" which were teeth drawn from the dead on the battlefields. These had been set into a base which he could wear rather more comfortably but certainly no more hygienically. Body snatchers had a good trade in Norfolk. One such, a man called Vaughan, managed, with his team, to dig up 22 bodies from a Great Yarmouth churchyard before he was caught. They were taken to a cellar where a joiner created large boxes which would hold half a dozen or so and which were then taken by stagecoach to London. Anyone enquiring as to the contents were told they were wardrobes. There are many tales of ghostly carriages, but as Neil suggested, these would be a good cover for smuggling activities which were rife in Norfolk - tea being the most common booty. It would be simplicity itself to paint a carriage white, add a few extra lanterns to make it gleam, use white horses with their heads painted black to make them look headless. Then the 'headless' driver just had to blacken his face, wear no hat and turn up his collar to make his head disappear. No one would ever come close enough to see what was really happening. Neil's tales went on... Black Shuck who terrorised the locality and was also perhaps a ruse to disguise smuggling operations - a ram or a small pony shrouded in a black blanket and with a couple of lanterns fixed to his neck would look creepy and something to keep well away from as the smuggled goods were safely hidden from the excise men..... Boys who saw a green shape wearing what looked like a rucksack which kept disappearing down a particular well near Cart Gap. On investigation by a hardy fisherman with plenty of rum inside him a body was discovered down the

There has been one new admission, Corre, a female who needs building up. Although she has survived hibernation, she is underweight so I will be getting her up to a better weight before releasing.
It's a very busy time with many going to be released - by the end of the month another 10 should have gone back to the wild giving them a chance to find a mate and help increase the dwindling population.

'My Favourite Song'
If you were given this title for a flower display, which song would you choose and how would you put together a display to match that theme?
A good question to ponder on! Fortunately for us all there are some talented flower arrangers who will be doing just that and you will have the opportunity to see their results for free at Northrepps Church in May. The Flower Festival, the first to be held in Northrepps' lovely church for many, many years, will also be accompanied by a sale of local handmade arts [paintings, cards, art glass, jewellery, clocks and other items made from oak] and a choice of lovely refreshments to sample as you browse the flower displays and listen to the accompanying tunes. St Mary's Church at Northrepps has many fine features including some excellent stained glass windows, a rood screen from the 1400s … and a very warm welcome!
Do come along with friends and family to enjoy all that is on offer and to help raise funds towards modernising the toilet facilities. Free entry, free parking. Friday 3 May - Sunday 5 May, 10am – 4pm daily at St Mary's Church, Northrepps NR27 0LG.
Glory Days in Cromer.
Shoppers to Cromer town will be delighted to blow away the winter blues with a new shop in Brook Street, just between two public houses - the Albion and Red Lion. Glory Days is at once Colourful to kitsch, fab to funky – and completely Retropolitan! Shop owner, Ruth Northway, says that Glory days will provide something colourful and a little bit different for those living in the town as well as holiday makers: “I have tried to make sure the products we sell are very individual. That has meant plenty of research, and a willingness to source locally and from far and wide to create the Glory Days look.” Colour is the predominant theme as Ruth explains: “I love colour – it means so much. We’ve tried to create somewhere which will put a smile on faces as soon as people walk in. Yellows for sunshine, pinks and reds for warmth, and blue for the sea”. Among the items proving popular are flamingo watering cans for the garden, clip-on colourful birds, seahorse vases, cards, games, giftwrap, and peg baskets. The perfect shop for gifts to brightening up home and life.

ELEMENTAL PERCUSSION
Sheringham and District Philatelic Society
Drawing on different cultural traditions, members of this small group have fun playing around with percussive sounds and create original soundscapes together. Instruments are supplied though participants are free to bring along something percussive (small!) that they think sounds good. For adults (16+) who enjoy inventing ideas - no music reading needed, just good listening ears!
At the April meeting of the Society, Peter Watts of the Norfolk and Norwich Philatelic Society presented part of his extensive collection of stamps and postal history from Belgium.
Currently there is room for up to another half a dozen people to join the group
As a child, Peter had a Belgian pen friend and the stamps on these letters provided the basis for a lifetime of collecting foreign stamps.
For further information and to get involved please email the group's director, Jane Wells occmusjw@gmail.com or 01263 519676.
space and the hall is easy to find.
Over 30 years ago he decided to focus his collection on Belgium, from both the philatelic and historical aspects and his passion for the subject was evident to us Early Belgian stamp from 1865 all! His display started with covers from Peter Watt’s display from the pre-stamp era of postage in the mid 1700s, when Belgium was part of the Austrian Netherlands and not a country in its own right. He showed examples of the first imperforate stamps to be produced and of all subsequent issues up to the end of the first World War.
The next 2019 workshop dates are 30 April, 14 May, 21 May, 28 May, 11 June, 18 June, 25 June, 9 July and 16 July - all Tuesdays 7.309pm at Northrepps Village Hall (NB Not 1st Tuesdays of each month). There is plenty of parking
Cost is £5/session payable on the night; or a discounted rate of £30 to cover all the sessions but this must be paid in advance or at the first session.
Belgium is well-known as a country that holds major exhibitions, for which special stamps and labels have often been issued. These stamps, plus special railway parcel postage stamps and postage due stamps also formed part of Peter’s excellent display, which he presented with great enthusiasm.
Chirology is the new Palmistry
Palmistry has come a long way since fairground predictions of “tall dark strangers” and “early deaths”. Modern research and studies from a wide range of professional fields has changed all that. Now called Chirology it takes in far more than the lines on the palm. It includes the hand shape and size, the finger lengths and prints and the texture of the skin.
As part of the Society’s 50th anniversary celebrations, all members present were given a specially designed commemorative mug and Peter received one of these too, as well as a certificate for his presentation.
Palmistry
Let’s bust some common Palmistry myths. The first is that a short life line means a short life. A person with this may be more prone to minor illnesses and in the distant past without modern medicine, these minor illnesses may have led to more serious illnesses, hence the myth. These days with modern medical care, better housing and food they live as long as everyone else.
Chirology Hand Analysis
Another myth is that the lines on the hands are fixed and unchanging. In reality the lines definitely can and do change. The adoption of a daily meditation or a walk are enough to change the lines quite quickly. Our fate is truly up to us.
Weekly classes
By Helen Duncan Professional Chirologist St John Ambulance Hall, Bond Street, Cromer
Chirology reveals our characters, how we relate to the world and those around us. It provides us with a deeper understanding of ourselves and allows us to make better decisions. Chirology is also helpful for understanding those around us. In life no two people react to events in the same way. Learning Chirology brings a deeper understanding and appreciation of why that is, it shows you how wonderful and unique we all are.
Mondays 7.30-8.30pm - 10 weeks only Learn to Read Hands Each week we examine an aspect of the hand and what it means. Then we practise our skills by looking at real hands and their prints. d

THE TEAM BEHIND CROMER LIFEBOAT FOOTBALL CUP Cromer Lifeboat Football Cup was inaugurated in 1905 for local football teams by a committee consisting of local businessmen, fishermen, lifeboat committee members and members of Cromer Football Cup to raise funds for the Cromer lifeboat and has continued to raise funds for the past 113 years.
Since its inauguration the competition has continued during two world wars and carries on today raising funds for Cromer RNLI. During the last 23 years the present committee has raised over ÂŁ46,000 for Cromer RNLI, averaging ÂŁ2,000 a year.
The committee has also been helped by local referees who have given their time for no financial reward other than to support Cromer RNLI.
B/row: Ricky Hayward, Paul Brooks, Derek Hinds (Chairman), Creed Finnegan, Dave Lewiss F/row: Roisin Finnegan, Lisa Baker (Treasurer), Rita Hinds (Secretary), Sharon Finnegan, Erin Finnegan Photo: Paul Russell
