The memorabilia will go on display at Cromer Academy – previously known as Cromer High School and Cromer Secondary Modern School – which this summer is marking 70 years of educating the town’s young people.

Aylsham Open Gardens Weekend a record number of private gardens will be open for the public to enjoy in aylsham over the weekend of 1 and 2 June. seventeen are open on saturday and 19 on sunday.

You will be able to stroll through woodland, gaze into ponds and pools and sit in courtyard gardens.

The route also takes you passed the preserved World War Two ‘Pill Box’ at Bure Meadows which is surrounded by a commemorative garden.

As well as planting ideas you can take home inspiration on the use of garden sculpture, managing a wormery to make fertiliser, novel ideas on disguising bins and growing fruit and vegetables.

When you need a rest sit and enjoy the delicious teas, cakes, ice-cream and light lunches that will be available.

There will also be a plant identification

The Open Garden event is organised by Aylsham in Bloom. Money raised from ticket sales enables the volunteers to continue funding the Bloom planting around the town. Money raised in the individual gardens from the sale of various items including refreshments, plants and books goes to a charity of the gardener’s choice. This year’s charities include the Norfolk Heart Trust, Oxfam, Aylsham Methodist Church and the Aylsham Care Trust.

Tickets will be on sale on the open days from 9.30am from the Heritage Centre in St Michael’s churchyard. The cost is £5 for one day and £8 for a weekend ticket. Those aged 16 and under are free.

Next of Kin Appeal – Brian Veal

Police are appealing for help to trace the family of a man who died at his home address earlier this month. 81-year-old Brian Veal who lived at an address in Malcaster Close in Mundford died on Monday 15 April 2019. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

CROMER FLOWER CLUB Our demonstrator this month was Jenni Baker and her subject ‘Sticks and Stuff’.

Her first design was in a willow basket fashioned out of twigs, and filled with skimmia, bay, conifer and saponaria, her flowers were apricot stocks and avantique roses in cream tinged with red, as well as rosemary and gerberas. While filling the basket she told us how she was risking her house by leaving four month old puppy with her older dog and a visit by someone to let them out mid-afternoon!

The next arrangement was in a metal stand with greenery hiding the oasis and completed with orange lilies, mario roses, salmon gerberas and blue delphiniums.

Her third design was in a rather grand statue with rubus, tricola, spruce to both sides. The centre was filled with lisianthus, white statice, a few white carnations. Lovely bridal wreath and arum italicum.

The next arrangement was in a plump wooden

pot found in her new shed which, as is the way with sheds, is now completely full. The pot was adorned with aspidistra leaves, contorted hazel, box, chrysanthemums, statice and protea.

After we were refreshed with tea and biscuits we admired her arrangement in a metal trough which was greened with box, laurel and choisya. Pink aqua roses, antique carnations. purple gerberas and spray chrysanthemums made a unusual design. Jenni is an unusual person as for her birthday she was given a Massey Ferguson tractor which she uses for charity work, well done her!

The vote of thanks was given by Anne Goozee. The best in show competition winner was Jenny Pawson. She ‘Sprung into Spring with a pretty arrangement of pussy willow, mascara, grape hyacinth, tulips and dog tooth lily.

Aylsham Singers’ Spring Concert

Following a recent recruitment drive, several new members have joined the Aylsham Singers choir and are now looking forward to performing in a Spring Concert on 18 May.

The title of this concert is ‘Beyond the Sea’. It will include a wide range of songs by popular composers and other less well-known but, nonetheless, lovely songs. In addition to performances by the full choir, there will be soloist and instrumental pieces. Proceeds from this concert are being donated to ‘Shelter’ - a charity aimed at supporting the homeless.

Viv Cairns, Musical Director, rehearsing some of ‘The Aylsham Singers’ Later in the year, the Aylsham Singers will also be involved in recording a charity single to help raise further funds for ‘Shelter’.

Photography Exhibition at Norfolk Wildlife Trust Centre

An exhibition of landscape photography by local photographer, Paul Burnham will be held at the Norfolk Wildlife Trust Centre in Cley from 15 May until 28 May, 10am - 5pm daily.

Paul trained as a photographer then changed career to work as a warden on nature reserves throughout England and Wales using his photography to help illustrate wildlife and the conservation message. He recently had an exhibition at the Green Britain Centre in Swaffham on pollution and the devastating effect of balloons on wildlife.

He works mainly in black and white using the ‘magic of light’ to transform the everyday scene into something special. Paul has exhibited in England and France. His wild landscapes include many taken along the north Norfolk coast.

Admission to the exhibition is free.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Poppy went back to the vets once she had finished the course of antibiotics she was taking and because the head tilt had not gone completely, she has another course of treatment and will be going back once this is completed. She is a very gentle little cat and enjoys watching the world pass by her pen.

When cats and kittens leave us for their new homes, we always advise their new family what type of food they have been eating and the type of cat litter they are used to. We always suggest they initially continue to use the same food as any change can upset their digestive system and can lead to the cat having diarrhoea. It is always better to introduce these changes gradually to avoid upsets. Similarly, with cat litter, they will have been used to either the clay lump or wood chip (depending on which fosterer they are with) and together with all the changes they experience when going to a new home, may not use the litter tray if the contents are unfamiliar to them. Again, introducing the litter you wish to use in future gradually, will make life easier for both you and your new family member.

Under the Animal Welfare Act all pet owners have a duty of care to provide their pets with a suitable environment and diet where they can behave normally and also ensure they are protected from pain, suffering injury and disease. Such was not the case for one little stray we took in recently. Quinsy was in a dreadful state, very underweight and with matted fur. During the two days he was with us his condition deteriorated and he was rushed to the vets where sadly he had to be put to sleep as it was believed he was a victim of FELV. His fosterer was so concerned she did feel he could have died before actually seeing the vet. Obviously, his owners had not shown a duty of care for him and had they been identified, we would have referred this to the RSPCA who would have probably prosecuted them. This poor little cat did not

deserve such irresponsible owners and they certainly should not be owning any animals.

Hedgehog Haven

Stan (pictured) is the newest arrival.

Out during the day, he was found by a dog walker just around the corner from where I live so his finder ran to find me.

He's a small hog just 270grms. Another one who has probably been struggling through the winter, he is slowly gaining weight, but will be quite some time before he is big enough to release.

To coincide with Hedgehog Awareness week, North Walsham Garden Centre are having a Hedgehog Day on Saturday 11 May between 10am and 3pm. Hodomodes Hedgehog Support will be there with an all things hedgehog stall, I will be in attendance with information leaflets, a tombola and, all being well, a hedgehog.

UPPER SHERINGHAM BELLS WILL BE RINGING OUT AGAIN SOON!

We are already training new bellringers at nearby St Andrew’s in Holt who will also help with ringing the bells at All Saints Upper Sheringham – but we are always keen to teach new people so if you ever fancied trying your hand at this ancient art get in touch! It’s nothing like you see on the television – you do not fly through the air, you do not need to be strong, you do not need to be musical or mathematical – you just need a sense of rhythm and a sense of humour!

We are delighted to report that the appeal is progressing so well that, if all goes to plan, we will be ringing the bells in time for Remembrance this year, and certainly by Christmas. Remember to listen out for us!

We still need to raise the last bit of the money – please do consider helping us with this last push – what better legacy than to be able to say “I helped those bells ring out again”.

As we start dismantling the fixtures and fittings prior to the bells being taken to the bell works in Dorset, we will have a few items we could sell as mementoes of this project – we will have some clappers, chiming hammers, pulley blocks and an odd selection of handbells in varying conditions. Get in touch if you would like more information or would like to make an offer for anything or come and have a look at what we have. We won’t charge extra for the rust and dust!! Breaking the impasse... resolving conflict using mediation techniques

The seemingly interminable failure of MPs to agree Britain’s withdrawal agreement from the EU is typical of many intractable disputes. At some point in our lives, most of us will find ourselves at odds with someone over something. Each person will have their own ideas about what’s right (usually based on what’s most important to them) but that can result in both parties being totally unable to agree an outcome – and a stalemate ensues.

Breaking that impasse can seem difficult, if not impossible. And that’s where mediation comes in. A form of dispute resolution used to prevent (or conclude) court proceedings. Here are ten useful techniques used in mediation to help find a settlement:

1. PARTICIPATION It’s important that both parties are willing to engage in the process, can put forward proposals as well as consider any proposals received.

2. EVIDENCE Both parties must be upfront and make available all key documentary evidence – so each side can understand the other’s position.

3. STATE YOUR POSITION Make your position clear at the outset, as it may be that one party has misinterpreted the other’s position. Explain what you believe to be right and what you hope to achieve.

4. WORK TOWARDS A SETTLEMENT Initially, each party’s aim will be to win, but it’s important to realise that resolution isn’t going to be a ‘win’ for one and a ‘loss’ for another – it will be a compromise that enables both parties to move on.

5. BE RESPECTFUL Whatever your feelings, it’s important to treat the other party with respect. Being insulting only creates more barriers and makes it more difficult for any resolution to be achieved.

6. BE PERSUASIVE Highlight the merits of your position so the other party can see that their point of view may not be as strong as they

originally believed. This can also bring the other party’s attention to the mutual benefits of a deal.

7. INTERESTS Identifying the other party’s interests can be difficult – but once you’ve asked questions and gleaned more information on what they want to achieve, you’ll have a much better understanding of what can be done.

8. BRAINSTORMING Neither party is going to leave with a settlement that includes everything they want. Explore and identify options which will satisfy both parties.

9. EMOTION Although all conflict gives rise to anger and frustration, it’s important to keep your emotions in check so you are able to think clearly and practically.

10. PATIENCE A fully-informed overview can take time before a final settlement is reached, so try and remain patient – it will pay off eventually!

1937 The Thatched Shelter was rented to newsagent Munday & Co for £18 a year.

1944 “Owing to the large number of persons using the Putting Greens being equivalent to a busy season in peace-time it has been considered necessary for assistance to be provided on Sundays.”

1959 The Pitch and Putt course at The Meadow was opened on Sunday 17 May.

1961 The Model Village opened on the area lawn of the Watch House on the Rocket House Gardens site,

This month marks the 90th anniversary of the opening of North Lodge Park on Saturday 18 May 1929. It will be celebrated in the Park on Saturday 18 May during this year’s Gardening Festival, part of the Crab & Lobster Festival.

On Friday 3 May 1929 Cromer Urban District Council sub-committee chairman G A Rounce called the third meeting of the North Lodge Committee to order with important decisions to be made.

The previous September, the Council had bought the North Lodge estate at auction for £5,500 to use the building as new offices and develop the surrounding estate as a park, preferably one that paid its way from the start to help repay the loan for the purchase.

Putting greens were hastily prepared, two ‘putting outfits’ and 30 seven-foot benches were bought at 37/- each, and it was resolved “the Park be open to the Public on Saturday 18th May from 9am until sunset”. The minutes of the 3 May meeting also record

that “the question of arranging for an Official opening of the Park was deferred to a later date”. Given the committee would not meet again until 28 May – 10 days after North Lodge Park opened – and the absence of any mention in the weekly Journal, it seems the park just opened, with no ceremony much less fanfare or razzmatazz.

And the plan paid off. Putting receipts for the first Whitsun week (18-26 May) were £11 5s 6d, comparing favourably with the council’s other revenue streams: for nearly the whole of the month (1-28 May) Motor Park receipts were £19 1 6d and from public conveniences £19 17 4d. By the end of its first successful 1929 season, North Lodge Park putting had taken £278 7s 6d,

with 40% of the receipts in August. As the minutes of October’s Parks Committee recorded:

“The Chairman thought that what they had heard as to the North Lodge receipts pointed to the wisdom of the Council in obtaining the property, and also the normal course of development pursued. He thought that when nearly £300 was obtained it was an encouragement to the Council to go forward on present lines (hear, hear)”

The 90th anniversary of the opening of North Lodge Park will be celebrated in the Park on Saturday 18 May during this year’s Gardening Festival, part of the Crab & Lobster Festival.

Applications now open for Holt Festival Art Prizes Sir John Hurt Art Prize, new prize for young artists and Open Studios invite entries One of the east of England’s top art prizes, the Holt Festival-Sir John Hurt Art Prize, is now inviting entries for the 2019 contest. The winner will win a cash prize of £1,750 and their entry will also be exhibited at Norwich’s internationally renowned Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. The leading North Norfolk Festival, has also announced a new prize specifically aimed at younger artists. The Sworders Art Prize is open to artists between 16 and 23. It carries a prize of £750 for the winner, who will also be offered a commissionfree exhibition by Holt’s new contemporary art space The Gallery in Lees Yard.

Last year’s Sir John Hurt Art Prize once again attracted an extremely high standard of entries with the winner coming from Norfolk artist Frances Blythe. Her oil on canvas painting Sunset, was unanimously selected by the judges.

Row, Row, Row your Boat

In December 2020 a trio of intrepid rowers will embark on the longest and toughest row of their lives (to date).

They are Sandra Squire, Helen Hogan and Kate Palmer, all members of the Kings Lynn Coastal Rowing Club who will be taking part in the Talisker Atlantic Challenge www.taliskerwhiskyatlanticchallenge.com

In order to take part in this mammoth event a serious amount of training will be necessary. To this end the trio ably assisted by Carol Noding, Tim Hogan, Bob Panrucker, Karen Nicklin and photographer Pete Jousiffe set out on Saturday 20 April, in their St Ayles Skiff, the ‘Lynn Rewet’ to row from Kings Lynn and visit all the lifeboat stations along the coast as far as Great Yarmouth, presenting Easter Eggs to all the stations along the way.

As you will appreciate, all coastal rowing is governed by the winds and the tides and timing

is therefore of the essence. The team was seriously hampered at the outset by a 45 minute delay with the arrival into The Great Ouse of a container ship. This put their timing all awry which meant that they arrived at Old Hunstanton later than planned and as the tide was on the turn. As they departed from Old Hunstanton they were met with the incoming tide and an easterly wind of about 15- 20 knots and, as they were not making any headway, it was decreed that, with the wind being from that quarter for the proposed duration of the row over the Easter weekend, that it would not be possible to complete the row in the allotted time.

However, the KLCRC members were determined not to disappoint the RNLI stations they had planned to visit and took it upon themselves to journey by road to all the Lifeboat Stations between Hunstanton and Great Yarmouth to deliver their Easter wishes and chocolates aplenty.

London DJ Madhatter AKA Paul Wellings, who used to write for the NME and played at Ibiza Superclubs like Pacha and Ministry Of Sound, played a SKA event to 100 people at Cromer Social Club with a SKA night in a final farewell after suffering a bad fall two months ago.

Artists get ready for Open Studios and Art Exhibition Preparations are well underway for the annual open studios event at barrington Farm day service centre at walcott.

Barry Skinner, 44, attends the centre’s supported Art Barn studio every week and is looking forward to welcoming visitors to the space and showing his work. “I’m happy to exhibit my work. I like to draw scenery and famous faces like Toyah and Bjork. I have autism. I taught myself how to draw and bring my own ideas. People should come here for Open Studios – it will do you the world of good and you might find something really interesting!”

Priscilla Bacon Hospice charity shop in North Walsham celebrates 1st birthday

One of the six charity shops set up in Norfolk, to help fund the building of the new Priscilla Bacon Hospice has just celebrated its first year of trading.

Six Priscilla Bacon Hospice charity shops, located in North Walsham, Aylsham, Stalham, Sheringham, Drayton and Taverham, were established to help underpin the fundraising operation and ensure that 93 pence in every pound raised is committed to the campaign

The shops also raise awareness of the charity and act as local hubs to extend support from the wider community.

Priscilla Bacon Hospice is a new charity which has recently launched a campaign to raise £12.5 million to build a new hospice with 24 inpatient beds and replace Priscilla Bacon Lodge, the existing specialist hospice facility in Norwich.

Priscilla Bacon Lodge was built 40 years ago, following a county-wide fundraising appeal and has provided a very high standard of specialist palliative care. Despite its achievements, it is now inadequate both in scale and configuration, as the population of Norfolk has grown by approximately 220,000 in this time, multiplying demand, and in its current location it cannot be extended.

The new hospice will be built adjacent to the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital and will have improved day care and outpatients’ facilities, as well as a coordination centre for the ‘Hospice at Home’ team, who deliver end-of-life care in the community.

Aldborough Primary School in North Norfolk has just had an Ofsted inspection during which it was praised for its standards of teaching and the rich curriculum it encourages. The inspection reported that the school “continues to be good,” praising the changes that had been made to maintain and improve its high standards.

Ofsted described the school as ‘vibrant’, with a ‘strong nurturing and caring culture,’ adding that all teaching staff know every pupil very well and concentrate on ensuring that their individual academic, social and emotional needs are met. “Consequently, pupils make good progress,” the inspector said, adding that one parent had commented, “This is a school where my child can thrive and do well.”

Ofsted noted what it called the school’s ‘wonderful woodland setting,’ praising the way the school is ‘determined to make the most of the opportunities this opens up for pupils.’ The inspector added, “Outdoor learning is encouraged. I saw learning outside where, in a drama session, pupils turned

The inspector praised the classrooms’ ‘purposeful atmosphere’, where ‘pupils are inquisitive learners.’ The school is committed to providing a rich curriculum, and the inspector found pupils spoke ‘enthusiastically’ about the wide range of learning different opportunities provided, including sport, music, languages, art and drama. “They also told me about the ‘science, art and writing week’,” said the inspector. “It gave them the opportunity to learn about the sea, through science-based exploration recorded in art and writing.”

Reading has been a strength of the school for

some time. In 2016 it received a letter from the then Minister of State for School Standards, Rt Hon Nick Gibb MP, congratulating staff and pupils on their standard of reading, which put them in the top 1% of schools nationally. The Ofsted report speaks of the pupils’ love of reading and their ability to hold well-developed discussions about areas such as characterisation and genre.

“Obviously we are delighted by the great things Ofsted has to say about our school,” says Alison Read, Head Teacher. “We are working collaboratively to implement the report’s recommendations, enhancing the learning opportunities already provided by our talented team.

We held our April meeting in the Cottage Louden Road with 40 members and two visitors attending. Our speaker for the afternoon was Maria Pennington whose talk was called ‘Pearls are my Passion’ and as the talk progressed you could tell they are defiantly Maria’s passion!

Until the start of the 20th Century the only way of collecting pearls was by divers weighted down with heavy rocks and a peg on their nose harvesting them from the sea bed. This was very dangerous as the divers had to hold their breath while under water. Since the beginning of the 20th Century most pearls are now cultured by oyster farmers either in salt or fresh water under controlled conditions.

I work for a charity (Change, Grow, Live) which delivers the Norfolk Independent Visitors Service and we are desperate to recruit committed and passionate volunteers who would like to spend a day a month with a young person in care.

The children and young people we work with have suffered abuse, neglect and often both; they often mistrust adults and need positive role models to show them that relationships can be trusting, healthy and positive.

Visitors always welcome at our meetings.

Overstrand Evening WI

The role of an Independent Visitor can be immensely rewarding and fun - taking a child or teenager out once a month to have fun together by engaging in community activities or visiting places of interest.

The April meeting was well attended and a warm welcome was given to two potential new members. That welcome was extended to Keri Lowe, textile artist/designer who was our speaker and demonstrator for the evening.

Minimum age for volunteer applicants is 21 and minimum commitment is for 2 years, once a month. Full training and support is provided, plus reimbursement of reasonable expenses.

Keri described and showed us an assortment of her felt work which was a revelation. We hope she will return for a workshop.

Federation news was then passed on to members. Four members attended the Federation annual meeting - a special centenary programme was given to all that attended. This was a very enjoyable day rounded off by writer, broadcaster and poet Pam Ayres. It was decided to bake 100 cakes/rock cakes to be handed out at the Overstrand Rock Stock Concert as part of our Federations centenary. Two outings are being considered for the summer - one to Horning for the Mississippi boat trip and the other to Somerlayton Hall near Lowestoft.

And into the swing of things with all the ‘old’ faces and a few welcome new ones. More members are very welcome. Come along to try us out before deciding, whether a veteran or new bowler. Subscriptions for the season are £65 for the 22-week season of roll-ups, league and cup fixtures, friendly games and club competitions. Social members are also very welcome to enjoy our clubhouse facilities for an annual fee of £15.

However, the break worked well for the red team of Edna, Sally and Jean N who came storming back but just couldn’t do it as the blue team held out for a 58-56 victory.
