SUCCESS FOR CROMER PEREGRINES! The pair of peregrine falcons seen around Cromer in earlier months successfully mated and laid three eggs on a nest platform hastily installed at the top of the tower.
Thanks to a partnership formed by the North East Norfolk Bird Club (NENBC) with Cromer Parochial Church Council, Cromer Museum and Hawk & Owl Trust.
A CCTV 50" monitor was installed in the church lounge/cafe, where church members and visitors are welcome. This is not available during services (9.30am-10.45am Weds. and 8.30am-12.15 Sun).
Peregrines are a protected species and disturbing their nest site is an offence, therefore the tower is closed to visitors until further notice.
The adult birds proved to be excellent parents and generated lots of interest with locals and visitors. The first chick hatched on 25 May with the other two following on 27 May. Cromer peregrines are possibly the latest to hatch in the UK and the chicks were ringed earlier this month to enable future sightings of the birds to be recorded when they fledge and leave the church.

Landlord update: Changes to Landlord and Agents Fees From 1 June 2019 all new tenancies must comply with the Tenant Fees Act 2019 (the 'Act'). Existing tenancies should also be compliant with the Act by 31 May 2020, or will be considered in breach. The Act is intended to limit the payments landlords and agents can charge tenants with residential tenancies, including Assured Shorthold Tenancies, student accommodation and licences to occupy.
The Act means that landlords and agents can only charge specific "Permitted Payments:
• Rent: The first year's rent must be in equal instalments. Any rent review clause within the first year of the tenancy must allow amendment up and down.
• Security Deposit: This remains broadly the same except that the amount chargeable will be capped. If the tenancy's total annual rent is less than £50,000, the maximum deposit that can be charged is five weeks' rent. A maximum of six weeks' rent can be charged for annual rents above £50,000.
• Holding Deposit: A landlord can still require a holding deposit, but this will be capped at one week's rent. A landlord cannot obtain more than one deposit for the same
property and it must be refunded within seven days of entering into the tenancy agreement or deciding not to proceed.
• Alteration Fee: If a tenant requests an alteration to the lease the landlord can charge up to £50, plus any reasonable costs, if evidenced.
• Tenant's Early Termination: If a tenant requests to end the tenancy early, either before the end of the fixed term or end of its notice period, the landlord can require a tenant to continue paying the rent until the original termination date, but cannot ask for it to be paid in a lump sum. The landlord can charge any reasonable costs incurred in arranging for a tenant leaving early. If a new tenant is found, the rent is only payable up to the start of the new tenancy.
• Bills: The landlord can ask a tenant to pay utility, communication and council tax bills direct to the supplier or to themselves to be paid on the tenant's behalf. If payment is made through the landlord, they cannot charge any amount over the bill amount.
• Charges for Late Payment: If the landlord wishes to charge for late payment it must set this out in the tenancy agreement. No fixed penalties can be charged, and interest can only be charged if rent is overdue by 14 days or more and at a rate no higher than 3% above the Bank of England's base rate.
• Replacement of Keys: The landlord must
set out in the tenancy agreement details of the payments that will be charged for replacement keys. The tenant can only be required to pay reasonable costs for replacement of keys and this must be evidenced by the landlord. The Act means that landlords and agents will newly be responsible for many of the costs involved with setting up, renewing and ending a tenancy. They will have to pay fees such as those relating to creating an inventory, professional cleaning and legal fees.
If the landlord charges a cost other than a Permitted Payment, once the Act comes into force, it may be a civil offence with a financial penalty of up to £5,000. If another breach is committed within 5 years the landlord will have committed a criminal offence with an unlimited fine.

Strand Club - The Mystery is Revealed!
The Strand Club's mystery tour began in unexpected sunshine which continued as we drove alongside the sparkling sea towards Mundesley and all points east.
Jackie entertained us with points of interest as we passed Stowe Windmill, Happisburgh church and lighthouse until we arrived at our first stop, Horsey Windpump. This has been newly refurbished and we could choose to climb it, wander along the Broad or visit the beautiful, colourful little garden nearby.

Our tea was served in a barn adjacent to the cafe with tables laid out beautifully and a fire lit. It felt welcoming and relaxing to be out of the torrential downpour, warm and snug inside. When the scones came they were a hearty size and several of us wondered if we would be able to do them justice after our satisfying lunch - it's funny how those scones disappeared with no trouble at all! They were light and tasty and accompanied by clotted cream and strawberry jam. Yum!

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society Summer Concert Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society returns to The Auden Theatre on Saturday 13 July at 7.30pm for its end of season Summer Concert which features some wonderful 19th century music linked by a German theme.
Sir Edward Elgar’s From the Bavarian Highlands was written in 1894 in homage to a memorable Bavarian holiday. The song lyrics were adapted to Elgar's music by the composer’s wife Alice. She gave the songs sub-titles in recollection of favourite places visited during the holiday. It will be performed in its original arrangement for piano accompaniment – perfect bright music for a summer evening.

Elgar was greatly inspired by Johannes Brahms during his visits to Leipzig so it is very fitting that the programme includes Brahm’s highly popular German Requiem (Ein deutsches Requiem) which will be performed in German with the original accompaniment for piano duet. Composed between 1865 and 1868 it comprises seven movements making this work Brahms's longest composition.

A German Requiem is sacred but non-liturgical, and unlike the long tradition of the Latin Requiem, focuses on the living rather than the dead beginning with the text ‘Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted’ from the Beatitudes.
Directed by David Ballard the choir will be joined by the popular Norfolk soloists Rebecca Kaznowski, soprano and Dhilan Gnanadurai, baritone.
Tickets for the concert are available from The Auden Theatre Box Office telephone 01263 713444, email boxoffice@greshams.com or online at www.audentheatre.co.uk priced £14 (£16 on the door) under 18's FREE. Please note that there is NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE for online orders.

Mundesley on Show
Celebrate summer with Mundesley on Show – seven August evenings of varied entertainment, from cabaret to gang show, Ceilidh to 1940s dance, Classical Soiree to a Punk pop concert and even a Murder Mystery to tax those ‘little grey cells’, Mundesley on Show offers something for everyone, all delivered by local North Norfolk performers. Opening Mundesley on Show with ‘Come to the Cabaret’ is Sheringham musician Paul Thompson, who is launching his first album, and with friends brings a night of music, laughter and poetry as our audience tuck into a light supper (£15). A slower pace follows as our audience chill out with a glass of wine and a bite to eat to favourite classical (and contemporary) sounds with the wonderful Norwich based Cordes Strings Quartet (£12). Another night brings the challenge of unravelling the tangled web of lies and deceit and solve the Mundesley on Show Awards Ceremony Murder Mystery performed by North Norfolk's Dreamstone Productions strolling players often seen on the Poppyline steam railway (£15). "You dance love, and you dance joy, and you dance dreams"... said Gene Kelly. Mundesley on Show
winds back the years with a 1940s dance with the great Norfolk vocalist Sarah Mai and her band, the Rhythm Riots. Sarah has performed at prestigious venues throughout the UK including Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. Aiming to offer something for everyone, for those a little more reticent Trotters Bottom Ceilidh will get even the most reticent dancers strutting their stuff.
Believing that Mundesley on Show must provide a mix of entertainment for all tastes and provide opportunity, on one night Mundesley 1st Air Scouts perform their Gang Show and on another a punk pop concert. Not only is the Gang Show great family fun but a fundraiser towards a climbing wall and a Ghana trip for Mundesley 1st Air Scouts. In contrast Mundesley on Show closes with the vibrant performances of local punk pop bands Couch, Adventures By Post and Foreign Bier.

Jerk lobster, crab, coconut and pea rice At the Grove we always believe that a little bit of effort goes a long way. This is a fairly complicated recipe but really rewarding and just perfect for a rip-roaring summer barbeque. Although the crab gets the plaudits, Cromer lobster is absolutely terrific and this dish is a firm favourite when it’s on during the season. There’s nothing quite like sitting outside with some cracking seafood and a chilled bottle of white; last season we had a few couples actually helicopter in and land on the lawn all to enjoy this incredible produce the fishermen pull in from the North Sea. The junior chefs were tempted to take the chopper for a joyride but we managed to apprehend them at the front door, there’s not a qualified pilot amongst them but apparently it looked ‘pretty easy to fly’. A lucky escape perhaps. We look forward to seeing you at the Grove this summer.
FOR THE LOBSTER • 2 cooked lobsters each weighing 600g 800g FOR THE JERK SAUCE • 1 tbsp of oil (Rapeseed or olive) • 2 garlic cloves, chopped • 2 tsp fresh ginger, chopped or micro-planed where possible • 1 bunch of spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced • 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped
• 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg • 1/2 tsp allspice powder • 1 tsp chopped rosemary • 1 bay leaf • lime, zest and juice • 1 orange, zest and juice • 50g of caster sugar • 2 tbsp of soy sauce • 200ml of chicken stock • 1 tbsp of chopped coriander • sea salt COCONUT RICE • 140g of basmati rice • 1 tsp sunflower oil • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced • 1 garlic, peeled and finely sliced • 100g frozen peas • 1 large dressed crab • 100ml of coconut milk • 100ml of chicken stock TO SERVE • chopped coriander • 2 limes, halved
Wash the rice in several changes of water, then leave to soak in cold water for 30 minutes.
For the jerk sauce, heat a large pan over a medium heat, then add the oil. Once hot, add the garlic, ginger, spring onions and chilli and fry for 2 minutes, then add the spices, rosemary, bay leaf and citrus zests and cook for a further 2 minutes. Add the sugar, soy sauce, citrus juices and chicken stock and bring to a
The Royal British Legion Halsey House 31 Norwich Road Cromer Norfolk NR27 0BA
Carefully cut the lobsters in half lengthways from head to tail, then remove the stomach sac from the head and the dark intestinal thread running along the length of the tail. Crack the claws and lay the lobster halves on a tray and spoon half the jerk sauce over them. Leave to marinate for 30 minutes while you light and heat up the barbecue.
Meanwhile, prepare the rice. Place a pan with a tight-fitting lid over a medium heat and add a drizzle of oil. Once hot, add the spring onions and garlic and sweat for 2 minutes. Add the rice and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Pour in the coconut milk and stock and bring to a simmer. Turn the heat down to low, then cover with the lid on and cook gently for 10 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and leave to stand, still covered, for 5 minutes, then add the crab and peas, folding gently
To finish the lobsters, place the lobster claws on a white-hot barbecue and cook for 3–4 minutes. Turn the lobsters' claws over and add the lobster tails, shell side down, and the lime halves, cut side down. Cook for 3–4 minutes, then turn the lobster tails over and cook for a further 2 minutes. Sprinkle over more chopped coriander and arrange the lime pieces to one side. Fluff up the rice with a fork and serve on the side.

Come Follow the Band
We were pleased to be back in our own hall for our June meeting.
Now its easy to imagine what some of you may be thinking “here’s a jolly group who look as though they have just enjoyed an hour or two at the local hostelry - an evening of sampling the variety of local brews without letting the bottom of the glass go dry.” But you would be completely wrong.
Our speaker was Jason Raper who gave us an interesting talk on ‘The History of Norwich Theatre Royal’. The first theatre was formed by the Norwich Company of Comedians 260 years ago. In 1758 Thomas Ivory built a theatre near Chapelfield and in 1759 it changed its name to The Grand Concert Hall. In 1768 it became The Theatre Royal Norwich. Many famous names have performed at the theatre and in 1891 it became the first all-electric building in the country. 1934 saw a disastrous fire and after the rebuild three bombs fell on the building during the war. The theatre today is very successful with a 76% capacity over the whole year.
This sextet from the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band are proof that it is possible to have high spirits with zero ABV. As the cheerful ensemble clearly demonstrates, being a member of the band does have time for joyful moments alongside the more serious business on practice evenings, when time is dedicated to preparing for forthcoming events or rehearsing new arrangements.
Seven members attended a stained glass workshop ay Alby Glass and our photo shows some of the items we made.
Our competition was on the theme of Summer. First was Jill Betz with a cross stitch picture she had worked herself, 2nd was Yvonne Mileham with a flower arrangement and Liz Holhouse was 3rd with a picture of beach huts. Four members received flowers to celebrate their June birthdays.
Several of the musicians, if not most, have been with the band for many years, which again proves it has something going for it. Would you believe there are members who are now ‘in their prime’ - although I won’t embarrass them by naming names - who started playing with the band when they were in their teens. It just goes to show how many years the band has been blowing its own trumpet. Whoops, I should say cornet!
Our next meeting on 11 July is our birthday month and we have local singer Eddie Bushall entertaining us. We meet in the Community Hall in Garden Street Cromer. Visitors and new members are always welcome.
A visit to the Band’s website - www.cromerandsheringhambrassband.com - reveals the history of the band, its current members and the forthcoming events. Two occasions to look out for are - Saturday 3 August at Sheringham Carnival Concert at St Peters Church 7.30pm and Saturday 26 September - 'Last Night Of The Proms' at Sheringham Little Theatre at 7.30pm.
Come and see us for some fun at our marquee
If you are a brass player you are always welcome, irrespective of standard, to sit in on practice evenings (Thursday at 7.30pm in Upper Sheringham Village Hall). Also, it is not unusual for holiday visitors to pop in to ’have a blow’. There’s dedication for you. Furthermore, the band is always prepared to advise and help, where possible, anyone who would like to take up playing a brass instrument or develop his or her skill. To contact us telephone Jane Bussey, Musical Director, 01263 821013 busseyjane@btinternet.com or David Williams, Chairman 01263 515636.

Claude the Crab snips the ribbon at opening of new Cromer charity shop A new East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) shop in Cromer was declared officially open last month.
Cromer Pier’s Claude the Crab was the star guest, putting his pincers to good use and helping snip the ribbon. Customers then streamed through the doors, spending £1,019 in the first hour.
Laura Mackay, EACH Shop Manager, said “We’re delighted to have opened our new shop here in Cromer and really look forward to becoming part of the community. A huge thank you to Claude for his part in what was a very fun morning. Thanks to everyone else who came out, too. We really hope people in and around Cromer will continue supporting us. Please do get in touch if you have items to donate or a few spare hours to volunteer.”
Tucker Street and Jetty Street, has undergone quite a transformation, with the bank having generously funded large parts of the work as part of its departure. Among other changes, the customer interview rooms have been turned into a menswear department and the bank manager’s office into a dedicated children’s room. One customer, Charlotte Lennox, said “I go in a lot of charity shops and I’ve never seen one quite like this. It’s fantastic!”
The shop will trade seven days a week, offering the same range of highquality goods customers of EACH’s 14 other Norfolk shops are used to.

EACH currently offers care to 127 children and young people in Norfolk, as SHERINGHAM AND DISTRICT well as support to 168 PHILATELIC SOCIETY
Eight members of the Society entertained the meeting on 11 June with displays from their own collections.

The history of First Day Covers began the evening after which stamps relating to a member’s connections with the city of Hanover were shown. Early Guernsey stamps, dating from 1871 were followed by part of a collection of early Indian postmarks, including those from Governors’ and Viceroys’ camps, Railway Mail Services and Queen Victoria’s Coronation Durbar! Another member had recently acquired a box of Danish philatelic material and displayed a set of First Day Covers from the 1970s. A display of Australia’s beautiful commemorative stamp series of the First Fleet’s arrival in 1887, a mixed collection of PHQ cards each related to the interests of the collector, and examples of stamps from the Pacific islands completed the evening.

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS CLUB
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
On Tuesday 4 June, after an excellent lunch and brief Annual General Meeting, Greg Cope, a member of the club, gave a fascinating talk on ‘The Aviation Bug and How I Survived It’.
End of year changes
Eschewing notes, he decided to wing it using a variety of props, mainly comprising some superb model aircraft, to prompt his memories.
As it is almost the end of my Presidency (Anton Elliott takes over at the end of this month) I feel I must put into words how much I appreciate all the generous help with cash etc. everyone in our area has given.
Greg explained that aeroplanes had been his love for more than 40 years. As a teenager, he visited airports to indulge in the hobby of aircraftspotting. This interest evolved into a long and successful career in aviation, his first real job involving the investigation of noise complaints at Luton Airport. Greg has worked for several companies, including Britannia Airways, British Aerospace and Rolls-Royce, initially in operations management, then moving on to selling aircraft and their engines.
Our last collection in Budgens in Holt raised just under £250 for the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital Parent’s Room and other local good causes.
Readers may remember that last year our Club worked with several other Lions clubs in Norfolk to raise money for a portable ECG machine, also for the Jenny Lind Hospital. I am pleased to confirm that the portable ECG machine has been ordered and will soon arrive plus another necessary piece of equipment. Fortunately the suppliers had a second order from the NNUH so they reduced the price, thereby enabling another item to be bought. Thank you to the suppliers too.
Greg’s occupation involved travelling to Europe, America, the Middle East and Africa. On his travels, his knowledge of French and German has been beneficial, and he also learned some words in Arabic and Swahili, this last language being particularly useful when, in 1992, he made his first aircraft sale to the President of Zanzibar.
We will soon give money to the EAAA, a very worthy cause and also to the British Heart Foundation. There may be some funds available for another small organisation. We will decide which one when this year’s fund-raising has been completed.
Like many of us, Greg has experienced some turbulence during his career, having been made redundant twice, but he has always found new employment and continues to work in the industry as a contractor, still enjoying his chosen vocation.
I have enjoyed this year as President, meeting many new people and I thank my fellow Lions for their support this year.
On behalf of the 32 members present, our new Chairman, Dave Williams, thanked Greg for his extremely interesting talk.
Good Luck Anton for next year. I know your chosen charity will be just as worthwhile.
We shall next meet at the Links Hotel in West Runton on Tuesday 2 July when our speaker will be John Balls talking on ‘Imposters aboard the Titanic’. John, who runs the Norfolk Titanic Association, has spent many years researching the events surrounding the tragic sinking of this giant ship in April 1912 on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.
Finally, we have made new friends, helped the Community and would welcome anyone of any age who feels like coming to one of our meetings to do something worthwhile to help others. The second Tuesday of every month at 7 pm is when we hold our meetings at the Morley Club in Sheringham. We all look forward to meeting you.
If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our monthly meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.
Kind regards, Liz Bowler, President, Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

Remembering Sgt Stanley Elliot
On 28 May, in the tranquil setting of Templewood, Northrepps, family, representatives of RAFA and local historians gathered to remember Sergeant Stanley Elliot, Wireless Operator and Air Gunner, one of the crew of Hampden bomber X 3023 44 squadron RAF Waddington who lost their lives when it crashed at Templewood in the

early hours of the morning of 20 November 1940.
Owner of Templewood, Eddie Anderson welcomed all present and oversaw the unveiling of the memorial tree stump plaque.
Local researcher James Mindham gave a brief overview into the crash and presented the family with small mementos of the downed aircraft and Jack Broughton of RAFA gave an epitaph and oration.
Sgt Elliot's family expressed their thanks to those who made this ceremony possible.
Patricia Le-May, sister of Sergeant Elliot, described the event as the most important day of her life, immortalising this for the family - for them totally priceless.

Raise funds for your club or charity, organisation or group with The Three Peaks (NORFOLK) Challenge - Saturday 17 August Sheringham Carnival introduced this event in 2015 as a fun way to help people raise money for their own club, favourite local charity or community project. Sheringham Carnival demands no monies - anyone who obtains sponsorship gets to keep it all to donate to whichever club, charity or project they are raising the funds for.
All people have to do is take part and get themselves sponsored to complete the five mile route in any way they feel comfortable; by walking, running, ambling, hopping …
The challenge involves climbing up Beeston Hill, then down the other side. Follow the well signed path to Incleboro Hill, then across to Stone Hill and back down Briton’s Lane to the start.
Some suggestions for which you could raise money - your school, football club, rugby club,

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club
Southrepps BC visited us for the return friendly fixture and put up a much better ‘fight’ than in their home game. We eventually came out on top on two rinks but were defeated on the other for an overall narrow 46-45 shot victory. Best rink for Cromer was Jackie, Tony and Bob A winning 21-16.
News from the Club House ...
Cromer 'Crabs' entertained North Walsham Warriors in a very tight contest. Eventually Cromer came out on top winning on two rinks and losing on one. Final result 7-2, 44 shots to 42. Top rink was Chrissie, Tony and Neil P with a 19-15 victory. The game v Sheringham Morley was postponed due to the wet.
The men’s team battled hard at home to Lakeside Pilgrims but eventually went down by 50 shots to 64, and 1-4 in match points. The one successful rink included Roger O, John H, David G and Neil P with a 20-16 win. They travelled to play Cawston but again without much success despite the 54-55 shot result, 1-4 in points. Losing on two rinks Cromer dominated on the other with Marc, James, Roger O and Neil P winning 24-12. The game at Suffield Park was postponed due to the rain.
The men took on premier team Caister in the County Fermoy cup and lost 53-31 over the two rinks. The home rink lost heavily 32-11 but the away quartet of James, Andrew, Gary and Neil P surprised themselves by only being defeated on the last end, 20-21.
In the NANSA league we again visited Cawston ‘B’, this time successfully. Two winning rinks and a drawn rink meant a 7-1 victory (57-34). Most successful rink was Jean N, Philip and Gary 21-9. The visit of Holt Swallows was another victory for Cromer, 6-2 (52 shots to 40). Top rink was Ann, Brenda and Gary with a 19-9 win.
The following day we had a visit from ‘old’ friends CMB from Wisbech. A lovely competitive game ended with three rink wins each, Cromer snatching victory by 95-91 shots, largely due to a 24-8 win by Arthur, Andrew and Les.
We entertained Islip BC from Northamptonshire and were pleased to win on four rinks to the visitors 2, 119-89 shots. Top rink was Jean N, Andrew, Bernie and Neil P with a 31-7 victory.
The Club Gentlemen faced the Ladies (with ‘Jemima’ taking the eye!) with 3 triple teams competing against each other. The games on two rinks were very close ending all square (14-14) and a win for the Gentlemen (14-11). The 3rd rink was close for the first half but Andrew, Keith and Neil P ‘stormed’ ahead in the 2nd half to win 20-6. So, the Gentlemen have bragging rights!
Club competitions matches have begun with the usual competitiveness and one or two surprises and ‘underdog’ winners, but I am not going to embarrass the losers!

Every year the courts attract county, junior and senior tournaments bringing huge numbers of visitors to Cromer. Cromer’s famous grass courts, like Cromer Pier and the Amazona Zoo are one of the key tourism attractions of Cromer. The Club is now working with North Norfolk tourism offices to market a holiday pass to enable families staying at Cromer’s hotels, bed and breakfasts and caravan parks to enjoy the Club and all its facilities at just £40 for an entire family for a week.
and play with their parents for £ 25 per year (less than 50p per week) and children aged 12 – 18 pay just £ 50 per year (less than £ 1 per week) for use of all facilities (tennis, squash, racket ball, table tennis and now badminton) at any time for as long as they like, dependent only on court availability! These juniors now compete against each other (and their parents!) every Sunday at Junior Open Play at the Club.
LTA Inspection shows Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Club has to teach forehand, backhand, volley, serve and “some of the best grass courts in the UK” playing a game. Children under 12 can join the Club Chairman of Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Club Kelvin van Hasselt writes “The grass courts are the price and joy of Head Groundsman Matthew Jordan and assistant groundsman Peter Cooper. Matthew Jordan is thought by the LTA to be the best Club groundsman in the country and they have sent him to help advise other Clubs like Frinton and Felixtowe. The famous All England Club at Wimbledon also admire the work of Matthew Jordan – called Jordy by everyone in Cromer. Wimbledon have recently given the Club some its top quality mowers and the LTA have given a grant for a new sprayer.
These grass courts are famous throughout the country. Players like Jamie Murray (doubles champion) and Ann Jones (winner of Wimbldon) have played on these grass courts. These same grass courts also played on by Clementine Churchill, wife of Britain’s wartime prime minister, when she won the mixed doubles championship at Cromer in 1923.
Earlier this year the Club underlined the importance of the grass courts to North Norfolk with the Grand Opening of the Grass Courts in April. It is to be an annual event to publicise Cromer and put tennis at Cromer on the tourist map.
MAY WINNER
North Norfolk District Council should share the credit for these famous grass courts as they provide the Club an annual grant towards their maintenance, so guaranteeing both a tourism facility and a well maintained public facility – both for residents and schoolchildren of North Norfolk. The Club welcome the public and have a very active outreach programme both to schools. The Club’s courts are now used by Cromer Academy 4 times a week and the Club is working with the Academy to cooperate more closely to make tennis a speciality of the academy – with every child hopefully learning the basics of tennis; The Club is also working closely with Cromer Junior School to ensure each class gets a 45 minute tennis lesson once a week over 5 week
The Club is working – again with the Council – on tennis for adults to encourage fitness. The Club now has a flourishing and continually expanding Rusty Rackets Group every Monday at 7pm – with several players who have literally not picked up a racket in 40 years who surprise themselves they can still play with a few tips from the Club’s coaches Andy Margarson and Kelvin van Hasselt.
The Club is also one of the few clubs in the Country to have an active outreach to the disabled – again thanks to initiatives of North Norfolk District Council. The Club runs tennis for disabled classes twice per week and also works at Sidestrand Hall and provides the tennis on the annual sports day at Sheringham Woodfields School”.
