RNLI at the Royal Norfolk Show helping to save lives

RNLI volunteers were at the Royal Norfolk Show. The Community Safety Team and RNLI Education spent two days in the Broads Village, working with the Broads Authority to inform visitors on how to stay safe near water and help others who find themselves in trouble in the water.

The volunteers were talking to children, parents and grandparents, informing them how to stay safe near water - sadly around 150 people drown each year and 50% of these had no intention to go into water when they left home. So the first message they got over was FLOAT FOR YOUR LIFE - if you fall into water, fight your instinct to swim until the cold water shock passes, float to live. Continued on page 4...

With the help of RNLI volunteers and Broads Rangers they were shown what a throw bag is and how to get help by phoning 999 and asking for the Coastguard then how to use the throw bag and have a go.

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS

Throw Bags are at all Broads Authority moorings on the broads - a lot of people had seen them but didn’t know what they were for or how to use them. After their talk and practice throwing they were happy to use them and help save a life.

Time on your hands Have you got time to spare? Do you like helping people? Do you like having some fun?

People were very interested in the throw line, not only people who own boats but those who live by or near water - these people were given information on how to obtain throw lines. This puts more aids near water to save lives.

Robert Mann, Community Safety Officer at Happisburgh RNLI, said “It was a very worthwhile two days. The number of people of all ages who were aware of our FLOAT campaign was very pleasing and shows the message is getting out and hopefully the number of drownings will fall. The large number of people trying the throw lines who would be happy to use them to help people in trouble, will also help save lives”.

Focus on Sidestrand Hall Special School

Sidestrand Hall School is a complex needs special school educating over 180 children who travel in from all areas of Norfolk. Our pupils have a wide range of high needs including autism and ADHD with many having more than one condition. Some pupils board in our residential unit for one or two nights per week or in our residential ASD unit for four nights a week.

Our charity shop The school is heavily supported by our registered charity with most of the money being raised via Strands our charity shop in Cromer. Money raised supports activities that enhance pupils learning and personal development such as subsidising trips, paying for visiting activities and more recently the purchase of a bus to convert to a school library. Our library was converted to a classroom when our numbers increased due to the shortage of special school places in Norfolk. We are currently raising money to buy new library books.

The low prices in Strands are appreciated by the local community – come and see!

We are always grateful to accept donations which can be dropped off at the shop and we are now able to accept electrical items too. The shop is also the only North Norfolk drop off point for Leeway who provide specialist services to adults, children and young people experiencing domestic abuse supporting over

10,000 people per year across Norfolk and Suffolk. Further information is available on their website www.leewaysupport.org

Strands charity shop collects the following items on behalf of Leeway : • Toiletries for women and children: new only • Female hygiene products: new only • Baby nappies and wet wipes: new only

Our pupils also do work experience in the shop, gaining valuable life skills and they love to be involved- serving customers, sorting stock, organizing displays etc. The pupils are also busy constructing items for sale at our summer fete – any left will be sold in Strands but the items usually sell like hotcakes! Raffle and tombola items for us to use at the fete can also be dropped off at the shop.

Coast Arts 2019

It’s all going on in Mundesley!

This summer Mundesley on Sea Parish Council are going all out with numerous events for visitors and locals alike.

Shipwreck - a mixed media open art competition

The annual Coast Arts open art competition has become one of the key elements of the festival.

The Council’s events team are dedicated to attracting visitors to the village by providing great events and entertainment. This year they are holding six events and would like to invite you to come and join in the quintessential charm that Mundesley has to offer.

Encouraging artists from across the spectrum, the competition inspires both professional and amateur artists to create unique works for display, for sale and for fun!

Summertime on the Prom will kick things off with four Sundays of free musical entertainment in the afternoon from 2pm - 4pm from 28 July through to 25 August. Come along and enjoy an ice cream on the prom and listen to some fabulous music with a great view.

The theme for the 2019 competition is Shipwreck – in particular the legendary Fernebo wreck.

Competition entries will be shown in a pop-up exhibition on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October, 10am-4pm, in the Education Room at the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum, Cromer.

Norfolk Day special will be on 27 July held in Gold Park and will be another family fun filled afternoon ,with music, stand up , dancing and singing. Also a free children’s craft tent and fancy dress competition. Amongst the entertainment will be mini donkeys, a good old fashioned Punch and Judy Show and Pat Nearny . A wonderful day in the park with lots to do for all ages.

The entries will be judged by two professional artists and the £100 cash prize will be awarded at the COAST Celebration & Exhibition Opening on Fri 25 Oct at 5.30pm.

As if that wasn’t enough there will be an outdoor cinema on 25 August at 7pm showing the film ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. Food and refreshments will be on sale, or you could bring a picnic and enjoy a relaxing warm evening on Gold Park, and feel free to dress up!

Thornage Hall Independent Living 30th Anniversary

The learning journey begins at birth.

As a parent, my hope is that my children will continue to progress and enjoy their learning into a place of work, enabling them to live independent lives, and follow their own path to happiness. But for those born with a learning disability, these most fundamental of expectations are dramatically restricted. For the last few months I have been working with a Norfolk based charity which has been breaking the mould in providing diverse living, working and learning opportunities for adults with a learning disability.

In June this year Thornage Hall Independent Living celebrated 30 years since it opened its doors. In that time the charity has done much to improve aspirations for those with a learning disability and for their families.

Based in the heart of North Norfolk, just a five minutes’ drive from Holt, the charity provides supported living for 27 adults, each of whom hold individual tenancies.

Support is on hand to ensure that they can live independently and that they can pursue working and learning activities of their choosing, and there is quite a choice. A further 30 adults, known as day service users, also travel to the site each week to take part in the working and learning activities.

The charity was formed following the donation of the Hall itself and a 70 acre parcel of land by the 22nd Baron of Hastings, whose second son, Justin, was born with Downs Syndrome. Justin attended a Steiner school in Hampshire and it is this philosophy which provides the cornerstone for the charity.

Rudolph Steiner was the founder of biodynamic farming and of Anthroposophy, a philosophy which holds that ‘a perfectly formed spirit and destiny belongs to each human being’. Everybody who works at Thornage Hall upholds this philosophy, ensuring every adult who lives there, or who attends the day services, are supported to

pursue their own destiny.

Classic Car Rally at Gresham Following on from their very well supported and successful event in 2018, the Friends of All Saints Gresham are running another Classic Car Rally and Craft Fair on Gresham Village Park and in the Village Hall (NR11 8RT) on Saturday 20 July.

There will be a wide variety of craft stalls (both inside and outside the Hall) demonstrating the skills and talent of local craftspeople including handmade jewellery, art, home furnishings, kitchen items, children’s books, handmade cards, pottery, needlework, woodcraft and basketry.

The RAF Radar Museum has become yesterday’s news… wrapping chips!

Where there’s a Will there’s a War? Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

With the number of Wills being contested in the High Court up 25% on recent years, it is more important than ever to secure your last wishes to avoid claims upsetting your legacy plans. The surge in claims is put down to increasingly complex family relationships. The landmark 2017 judgement in Ilott v The Blue Cross overturned accepted legal thinking. In that case Melita Jackson left most of the £486,000 estate to animal charities, but her estranged daughter Heather Ilott made a successful claim against the estate, arguing that her mother had not made reasonable provision for her.

The Supreme Court criticised the decisionmaking process of the lower Court of Appeal in the Ilott case and made some useful points. The Court of Appeal had given little weight to the testator’s clear wishes; which was wrong. While the wishes can be overridden, they are part of the circumstances of the case and must be taken into account. The Court of Appeal thought that charities have no ‘needs’ and therefore, unlike a person, they are not prejudiced if their benefit is reduced. For all Inheritance Act claimants, apart from spouse, ‘need’ is a necessary but not sufficient condition for an order. Awards are limited to maintenance (rather than a lump sum) and so, had an award by way of housing, been appropriate, the right order would be likely to have been a life interest, rather than an outright sum.

Cases since Ilott, such as Thompson v Ragget [2018], show that these principles are not being consistently applied by the Courts. As ever, the

decisions are specific to the facts but Orders for capital sums by non-spouses are still being made, despite all the guidance of the Supreme Court. Reasons given include such an Order allowing all parties to move on from the estate litigation with all links being severed and the estate being substantial so there was ‘enough to go round everyone’. The closeness of the relationship between the deceased and the beneficiary of the Will has been held to make a difference.

Modern legal approaches include setting up a trust which would distribute funds in line with your wishes but could adapt to any change in circumstances instead of sticking rigidly to the Will. Communicating intentions to family members to avoid unpleasant surprises, appointing a committed and competent executor all help prevent misunderstandings when it is too late.

At this point some readers will be shaking their heads and talking about this unacceptable situation, which is that in 2019 we are seeing a rise of the need for Foodbanks. No-one will disagree with that sentiment, however for many, often complex reasons, this is the situation we find ourselves in right here, right now. And together we’re tackling that challenge head on.

Most of us take the food we eat every day for granted. Most of us don’t believe that we will ever be in a position where we can’t buy food for our families. But crises happen, often without warning, and ordinary people just like us – people who may be your friends, your neighbours, members of your own family, old school friends, other parents - find themselves in this unthinkable situation.

Financial crises come in many shapes and sizes, including, redundancy, bereavement, relationship breakdown, benefit delays, illness, low income during out-of-season periods, unplanned but essential expenditure and debts which can grow because of any of these things, to name just a few. These situations are often not anyone’s ‘fault’ and so there is little to be gained by trying to apportion blame. Instead, lets continue doing what we’ve done so far and support these people when they most need us to.

Norfolk primary school’s wellie-wall wins RHS Best School Garden and Gold Medal at the Royal Norfolk Show

Aldborough Primary School in North Norfolk won Best School Garden 2019 and an RHS Gold Medal for its garden at the Royal Norfolk Show. Up against stiff competition from much larger schools, both public and state, Aldborough’s wellieinspired creation wowed the judges, who were all from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Other features included a willow den, vegetable planter, friendship bench, wooden wind chimes and willow dragonflies – all made by the pupils, who had great fun showing the judges around their school garden.

The RHS says that school gardens are a huge part of their push to encourage young people to enjoy the benefits of gardening. There were eight school gardens at the Royal Norfolk Show, each measuring three metres by three metres. The garden designers were encouraged to consider wellbeing, tourism and volunteering – with a ‘rustic twist.’

£16,000 boost for school’s year of science and technology

at the school throughout the year, and pupils and staff will work with institutions including the University of East Anglia and Sir Isaac Newton Sixth Form in Norwich, the UK’s first maths and science specialist sixth form.

A Cromer school has received funding of ÂŁ16,000 to spend a year celebrating science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Cromer Academy’s ‘Year of STEM’ will launch in September 2019, with activities across the school to boost the profile of science and technology subjects and careers, and develop links with employers across the region.

A special area for 500 new STEM books will be created in the school library, with STEM texts included in the whole school’s reading programme.

Cromer Inshore Lifeboat responds to call of object in water

A telephone caller had reported seeing an object in the water near Trimingham. The inshore lifeboat ‘George and Muriel’ was quickly launched and a search began. Tidal movements meant the search area initially was between Overstrand and Trimingham.

However once on the scene at Trimingham, it was established that the object was in fact a piece of wooden debris, it was picked up and returned to shore.

Hedgehog Haven It's hoglet season!

This month we were very lucky to welcome Stephanie Laing who stood in for an unavoidable cancellation. She made a wonderful display and an added bonus is that she is also a judge. The subject was ‘On the Move’ and the first design represented a wheel. The base was a hoop covered with blue and green wool, she used fatsia and manipulated aspidistra leaves teamed with green anthuriums into the new biodegradable oasis. The next arrangement was around an upright piece of wood and was a garden design, moving from one garden to the next. The greenery was privet, hebe, hosta and fatsia leaves with fern and phormium. Purple stocks, hosta flowers, beautiful pink peonies, sweet peas and deep pink roses.

It's very busy here with nine different hoglets from different locations in just one week!

They are all around about 100 gms so very small and should still be with their mothers. They will be in my care for several weeks until they get to release weight. At this weight and with small teeth coming through they are able to lap some mashed cat food, but mornings and evenings I am syringe feeding them a little goat’s milk.

Stephanie then did an oasis free design using a bucket filled with chicken wire and placed in a wooden box to represent a fort. The foliage framework was used to hold the flowers in place. It was filled with privet, eucalyptus, hosta, green atheuriums, gypsophila, germinis, white roses and white carnations. Next she produced a spathe (retrieved from a skip in Spain late at night!) to represent a boat which was adorned with fatsia leaves, pin head proteas, bright orange germinis and espania roses which are red and golden yellow.

Please if you find some hoglets out during the day, leave them about an hour in case mum comes back, then intervene.

The hog who came in two weeks ago for observation has given birth to four hoglets. Mum and babies are doing well.

Huggy came in with a bad back leg injury and is on antibiotics. It will take several weeks but the swelling is slowly going down.

It all goes wrong for Mundesley Players

Then another oasis free arrangement, around two pot plants asparagus fern and splendi for support and hidden test tubes for the flowers. There was also a metal stand with a metal circle with test tubes attached. The tubes were filled with white gerberas, white roses and white carnations. Then last but certainly not least around metal circles ecualptus. Red heuchera, privet and spirea were placed. This looked lovely then she added purple canna lilies, pink gerberas with purple centres, pink roses which made it stunning.

In their hilarious comedy show ‘Streuth & Deckchairs’ things get totally out of control for the Mundesley Players. Over the top acting, scenery toppling, lights fusing. At the Coronation Hall Mundesley on the 1 to 3 August, simply expect the unexpected.

The vote of thanks was given by Val Kirkwood. The best in show in our competition was Liz Crane, quite an accolade from a professional judge with a sweet arrangement in a cup and saucer using a variety of flowers from her own garden. Our next meeting is a 7.20pm in the Junior School on 15 July when David Wright subject is ‘Musicals’. Visitors are very welcome.

Chairperson Cheryl Collings said that the actors were having great fun making things go so far wrong that it becomes a total farce.

Set on a seafront in a fictional seaside town remarkably like Mundesley, a series of odd characters discuss their lives and what naughty things they have been up to. Sometimes with surprising and funny results.

Northrepps 'Poppyland' Branch of The Royal British Legion

This year, our Standard Bearer, Kevan Henderson, took part in the parade at the Royal Norfolk Show and we attended Armed Forces Day in North Walsham with our stand - we thank them for inviting us and also their excellent hospitality. We are now preparing for our Coffee Morning at Overstrand Cricket Pavilion on Wednesday 17 July 10am to 12noon - come along, enjoy the morning and browse at our stalls, have a go on the tombola and raffle - a warm welcome awaits you.

Norfolk Day is fast approaching, and our stand and members will be supporting Northrepps Church Fete, another opportunity to come along and say hello and see what our Branch is all about. At our last Branch meeting, our member Kevin Smith gave us a very interesting account on his trip with his wife to Normandy Northrepps Poppyland Branch stand at and the laying of our Branch wreath at the Bayeux Memorial Armed Forces Day in North Walsham an event charged with much emotion. REAP for Young People at Cromer Pier Theatre

The REAP careers drop-in service is coming to Cromer Pier Theatre on Sunday 28 July. The Raising Employment Aspirations Project, known as REAP, is a new project funded by the North Norfolk Youth Advisory Board. It enables Lola Stafford Consulting Ltd to support young people aged 13-19 (up to 25 if there is a learning disability) in North Norfolk to get the best possible start to their careers and grow their confidence. The project is available through the local schools and colleges and is also hosted in community venues providing a drop-in service which includes finding out about employment or further education opportunities plus help with CVs, application letters and interview skills. REAP is designed to help young people feel able to aim for their ideal job, no matter how big, small or different that individual choice is. Jacqui Starling of Lola Stafford Consulting Ltd says “We are delighted that Cromer Pier Theatre has offered to host the service. It’s such an iconic venue central to the Cromer community and offers us the chance to deliver a dropin session which promises to inform, inspire and motivate young people needing some extra help to make career choices. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Another important role in the branch is ordering Cats Protection stock from our Empawrium Catalogue for major sales. This could lead to more opportunities to be involved in other areas for ordering goods, equipment, etc, but more of that next time.

We are happy to report that the four kittens mentioned last time are now well on the way to recovery. However, a further kitten has arrived from the same site and this too gave us great cause for concern. He went straight to the vets on arrival in care and also needed an antibiotic injection, medication for his eyes, plus more antibiotics, to be given by mouth. Before leaving the surgery, he had fluids injected under the skin as he was very dehydrated. He too is making good progress. We know there are another two kittens on the site and, thankfully, they are both healthy but are proving difficult to catch. A cat trap has now been put into position to hopefully catch them. These kittens were very fortunate as without medical intervention I am afraid they would not have survived.

This number is site now reserved for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

Last time we mentioned the role of the fosterer within the branch. However, there are many more opportunities for people to become involved in the work that we do and we always welcome new volunteers. With other commitments in their lives, most people cannot offer the same level of help that is required when caring for the cats first hand. If you have a few hours to spare there are many other roles to fill and we will try to explain over the next few issues the different ways this can be achieved.

Fundraising is one area where there are many opportunities to help the cats, by raising the money to ensure they receive the very best help we can give them while in our care. We do have a lady who organises store collections and she is always happy to hear from people willing to give an hour or two when these take place. Street collections are another area where a few hours of your time would be invaluable. Helping at one of our major sales is another way to become involved and also gives you the opportunity to meet like minded people. We are always happy for volunteers to arrange and organise their own fundraising events (Craft Fairs, Car Boots, etc) and do have some goods available for these.

Free fun for all the family at Holt Festival opening weekend

Holt Festival, North Norfolk’s annual feast of arts and culture is just around the corner and this year it kicks off with a big new familyweekend of free events for all.

Tickets are on sale now for our popular Jazz evening on Saturday 13 July. We again welcome the brilliant jazz quartet, Swing de Paris. Enjoy gypsy style jazz by the river, bring a picnic, chairs and friends, and take advantage of our quirky horsebox bar too.

Starting Saturday 20 July Gresham’s Pre-Prep field in the town centre will become a hive of activity and fun between 10am and 4pm with free workshops in football, art, creative writing, song writing and street dance. There’s also an art car boot at Lees Yard giving the opportunity to buy direct from artists.

In true Norfolk style, we’re ‘Doing Different’ and are opening for free for our ‘Norfolk Day’ on Friday 26 July. We will be offering river trips for a small charge too. Ring to book your seats.

There is plenty to see and do for all the family, including enjoying a picnic in the summer sunshine by the river. Check out our special exhibition, the Lost Railway of the Broads, and take a river trip on our steam boat, Falcon, or on our electric boat, Marsh Harrier. Dogs are always welcome, in the Museum and on the boats.

On Sunday 21 July a Street Feast opens at 12 noon in the High St followed by a family town picnic open to all on the Pre-Prep field with lots of free live entertainment.

Another book for us all to enjoy Anyone who has read and enjoyed the three previous Yesterdays books has another treat in store.

The first book, Yesterday’s Loves and Laughter introduced John Gibbs and his sister Freda in the village next door to our own, and his three workmates, George, Arthur and Charlie who work at Mr Whitlow’s farm.

In Yesterday’s Hearts and Homes John married his sweetheart Ellen and they set up home because his sister Freda has married and moved out.

Yesterday’s Labours Lost tells the story of another character, Robert Dennis, from the village. This poignant tale depicts the demise of the traditional smallholder from our Norfolk countryside.

The Yesterday’s series takes us back realistically to the ways in which people lived and worked in the nineteen fifties. Those quiet years when the country was still being rebuilt after the harrowing days of the war were times of peacefulness, hopefulness and increasing plenty before the disruption and excessive cultural abandon of the nineteen sixties. Tradition and well-tested ways still held sway on the farm and in the home. Young people who read these books are amazed that people in the very houses we occupy experienced such conditions and situations. Yet when we talk to survivors of those days, the phrase, “we’ve seen the best days” is often heard. Survivors of those years who read these books revel in the stories of people in a world that they know.

story-telling. In those quiet days in a Norfolk village, when someone new came to the village, tongues began to wag, conjecture was rife and people began to dream. Fancies were bred in those dreams and in the placid hours of day and night they germinated and grew and if acted upon could become follies. Ripples, enjoyed by some but hurtful to others, disturbed the surface of village life for a time. Harmless maybe but foolish all the same and of course they did not die until trodden upon. Enjoy this bit of scandal.

You won’t want to miss this book and all the others so do go to Forrests in Stalham, The Showcase Gallery in North Walsham or Jarrolds in Cromer and buy one or more all for a more than reasonable price. It’ll be worth every penny.

Local MP pledges to keep a watch on our mental health services

Norfolk Police collaborates with smart location tech company

Norfolk Police is rolling out the latest smart technology to make it easier for people to share their exact location using a unique three-word address. Its decision to use what3words – available for iPhone and Android users to download for free and use without subscription charges was announced at the Royal Norfolk Show last month. This innovative technology provides people with a simple and precise way to share their location quickly and easily.

Local MP, Sir Norman Lamb, has promised to continue scrutinising mental health spending and service performance in North Norfolk, following the parliamentary launch of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ new website ‘Mental Health Watch.’

The website brings together multiple data sources to give users a one-stop shop to track mental health services against national government targets.

Norfolk's Chief Constable Simon Bailey said "Our rural communities told us about this remarkable technology that can pinpoint a precise location. We've been working closely with what3words for a while now to see how we can bring this to Norfolk and integrate the technology into our systems for the benefit of our communities. We know it can be difficult for people living and working in the more isolated parts of Norfolk to give us their exact location, and this technology could be ground breaking in helping us to continue to better serve and support our communities. It's also another example of our commitment to the ongoing partnership between the very best in technology and modern policing. Rural policing is part of our core business and communities need a police service that is responsive, innovative and vested in providing a quality service to all.”

It means users can see how their local area compares to others across 25 indicators, including spend per head on mental health services and waiting times for people needing treatment for depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses.

Dozens of parliamentarians attended the launch, including Sir Norman Lamb MP who opened the event, to hear from Professor Wendy Burn, president of the College and Jackie Doyle Price MP, Minister for Mental Health.

What3words has divided the world into a grid of 3m squares and converted complex GPS coordinates into unique three-word addresses for each square. For example ///exists.roofs.plod refers to a precise point next to a road on the Norfolk Broads.

They were shown how to use the site, how to understand the data and how they can use the information to hold government and local decision makers to account.

Sir Norman Lamb MP for North Norfolk said “For too long it has been difficult to get a true picture of how our area is doing compared to others when it comes to mental health services. The College has clearly worked hard in developing a resource that finally gives me the information I need to see where services need improving and where they are doing well. I have pledged to use Mental Health Watch to keep a close eye on the performance of mental health services in North Norfolk. This is particularly important given the serious concerns about services locally.”

The system, which is available in more than 35 languages, has been integrated into Norfolk Constabulary's Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, and will go live in the next month.

The what3words' app provides users with a unique three-word address, which when added to the CAD mapping system can pinpoint a caller or incident to a three-metre square of Norfolk. Officers can then be dispatched to the precise location.

Work is also underway to upload the what3words app on to every police device.

Council Leader to hold Monthly Surgeries Views sought from members of the public

The stage is set, the lights go down, red velvet drapes are drawn. We sit and wait expectantly to see who will come on. ‘Mine Host’ appears, dressed to the ‘nines’, he’s full of bonhomie, And introduces the first act that we’re about to see. Music plays, girls appear, to start their dance routine; They twirl and whirl and do high kicks, their sequins flash and gleam. Their costumes swirl around them, their movements quick and bold, As they dance energetically - a real joy to behold! They run off, and next there comes a juggler with some balls, And a unicycle - he thrills us in the stalls! Then follows a comedian who trips and does daft walks, He plays the drums extremely well and tells some silly jokes. A tenor sings some love songs from famous musicals. His voice is rich and powerful, ideal for music halls. A young soprano joins him for a love duet or two, They’re both well matched and well received by those sat in the pews! Cromer Marrams Bowls Club

We have played three games with great friendly spirit against annual visiting ‘friends’. Longthorpe BC from near Peterborough came to challenge and retain the annual ‘Crab Trophy’ but Cromer ‘snatched’ it back with a 121-106 shot victory, 4-2 rink wins. Top rink was John H, Russell W, Jackie P and Bob A with a 26-13 score. Houghton-on-the-Hill BC from Leicester brought their usual friendly ‘bunch’ to play but were defeated 109-63, 4 rinks to 1. Best Cromer rink was Joan B, David M and James P with a very impressive 38-12 win. We went to Holt BC to play a mixed friendly and were again victorious by a 97-85 margin, 3 rinks to 2. Top rink was Ann M, Andrew H and Neil P (24-11).

News from the Club House ...

Our ladies entertained Thorpe Rec Ladies at bowls, and a buffet of course, with honours fairly even. One rink win each and a drawn rink, with Thorpe just earning victory by 59 shots to 53.

Cromer’s winning rink was Jackie, Brenda and Jane, 24-16. They then travelled to Holt to be entertained, winning on both rinks with a 38-26 shot score line.

Cromer ‘Crabs’ continued to surprise themselves with another victory in the Federation league, this time a 7-2, 51-35 win at New Road North Walsham. Two rinks were very tight with one win each, but Chrissie, Philip and Neil P had the rub of the green at times and scored a 21-5 win. The visit to Cawston ‘B’ was less successful with a 0-9 defeat!

The men travelled to the rearranged game at Fakenham in the Hansells league but were on the wrong end of a 43-71 score line, losing on all 3 rinks for a 0-5 defeat. The return at home was a much closer affair. Although Cromer lost 1-4 (54-61) James P, Andrew H, Les K and Neil C won 19-16.

Last season’s holders in the 3 wood KO cup, Cromer, found this season’s 2 leg matches with Stalham a much tougher affair. The home leg was a 37-62 ‘thrashing’ and was followed a week later by a 36-54 loss although Tony G, John B and Bob A did win 18-14.

The NANSA league team have fared much better to lead the league. Away at Aylsham they gained an 6-2 (56-35) victory with two rinks tieing for ‘best’. Chrissie L, Bob B and Keith P (24-13) and Jean N Bob K and Philip E (20-9). The visit to Weybourne was more successful with a 7-1 (72-44) win. David M, Philip E and Bernie C topping the rinks.
