Cromer Carnival Parade
The Carnivals 50th Anniversary saw a massive turnout and exciting new floats to impress even veteran carnival goers. There were more than 50 entries this year to the float competition.
Things got off to a great start on Runton Road with the most impressive biker parade I can remember. A dazzling array of costumes: Punk Rockers, Animals, a Mermaid, a Pikachu, and even Batman and the Joker. What a treat! For the first time in Carnival History, the Motorbikes were judged as floats in their own right. The first ever winner of this award was Dave Cornell.

Cromer Carnival Parade
Continued from front cover... Next, smart, in uniform, and with military precision, the Romford Drum and Trumpet Corps and the Norwich Pipe Band marched through the streets announcing the arrival of the parade. Nearby, the pulchritudinous Miss Cromer Jessica Foster and her entourage waved from the familiarly floral Cromer Flower Club float.
Other highlights of the parade itself included an incredible dragon head made of balloons from The Balloon Artists float. There was the utterly groovy 60s themed double decker from Bus and Us. And of course, there was the stunning and award winning the Crab and Lobster themed float from Davies Fish Shop, with mermaids in a boat. They did the town proud.
2.
Parish Church was a worthy winner of the Carnival Parade, but both floats were sensational. And we all know that two child catchers are better than one!
4.
6.
There were simply too many great floats to count. Who could forget that fabulous Wizard of Oz themed cat-car float from North Norfolk Cat’s Lifeline Trust or the Disney movie themed costumes of Cromer About with Friends? There were, dancers, astronauts, and hippies. Many, if not most of the floats were new to this year’s parade, such as the suspenseful cliff climbing themed float from North East Norfolk District Scouts. 5.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS in in 2019? 20 19 ? SOLICITORS
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time fo or many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2019 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

JUBILEE PLAYERS AUTUMN PRODUCTION
September at the Museum of the Broads
You can visit the Museum for free during the Heritage Open Days weekends.
‘Out Of Focus’ by Peter Gordon
The Jubilee Players are delighted to announce that they will be treading the boards again in October at the Tithe Barn Horstead.
On Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September we welcome Norada, courtesy of the Wherry Yacht Charter Trust.
‘Out of Focus’ is a comedy set in the annexe of a church hall where a series of over bookings have occurred. As a result, a wonderful mix of local characters descend on the hall for a Brownie pack meeting, badminton and table tennis matches, auditions for the pantomime and an illustrated talk on steam locomotives.
Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 is our ‘Harvest and Home’ weekend with a World War Two theme. Boat trips are also available (charge).
Norada
Don’t miss our 2019 exhibition, the Lost Railway of the Broads and take a boat trip. Families and dogs always welcome. Open Sunday to Friday 10am to 4.30pm. We’re always looking for volunteers. Give us a call or see online if you’re interested. The Poor’s Staithe, Stalham, NR12 9DA, 01692 581681
www.museumofthebroads.org.uk ,Twitter or Facebook @MuseumBroads
Confusion reigns until everyone unites for a common cause, the production of the pantomime, which hopes to raise money for the church bells. Over the following weeks of rehearsals, alliances and friendships are formed and tested as the cast battles against the odds and the opening night approaches.
BATTLE OF BRITAIN SERVICES
The Sheringham Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association will hold a Battle of Britain Memorial Service at St Peter’s Church, Sheringham on Sunday 8 September at 3pm. Members and supporters will be made most welcome.
Events finally culminate backstage after the final performance as the cast celebrate and everyone receives their just desserts.
Refreshments will be provided after the service.
On Sunday 15 September at 1.45pm, the Cromer Branch of the Royal British Legion will hold a Battle of Britain Flag Raising Ceremony at the RBL Halsey House in Cromer. All members of the RBL, RAFA & their supporters are invited to attend.
Come and join us at The Tithe Barn for some Autumn comedy fun! ‘Out of Focus’ by Peter Gordon will be performed at The Tithe Barn, Horstead Wednesday 23, Thursday 24 and Friday 25 October at 7.30pm. All tickets £6. Box office Sandra’s Salon, Tel: 01603 736676, 18, Wroxham Road, Coltishall NR12 7EA evenings 01603 738764.
40 libraries across county now open for longer
More library customers than ever can now take advantage of the long summer days and light nights, with 40 libraries now offering extended opening hours since the beginning of the year. The scheme is called Open Library, and it gives customers, partners and community groups access even when a library is unstaffed. It was rolled out in June 2018, with 30 libraries initially. With these 10 new libraries, the overall number of hours libraries are now open to the public has increased, to 1,360 hours extra per week. Margaret Dewsbury, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “We know the current opening times mean some residents may not be able to visit their library during the working day. So, by extending the opening hours, we’re offering unprecedented access to all the vital resources our libraries offer to people in Norfolk. We also want to make Norfolk’s libraries more accessible to a new audience, who have not traditionally used the library service because their local branch isn’t open at a time when they can visit.” To sign up for Open Library, people just need to talk to a member of staff who can add the access to their library card and give them a PIN number. Annual News and Thank You from Cromer Carnival Bingo
Once again it was nice to see the marquee full of people enjoying a game of bingo and buying lots of raffle tickets trying to win one of the 86 prizes which had kindly been donated by traders, friends, and neighbours of Cromer, Holt and surrounding area which enabled us to raise £1524 just from the raffle alone. This was a record amount.
The Carnival Queen could not join us this year but her Junior Attendant Leha Banning ably stepped in to draw the tickets out of the drum. She did a fine job.
Once again thank you to everyone who donated and to those who helped on the evening and to all who came along to play.
Hope to see you all again next year. Trevor & Valerie Pells, Jim & Janice Woolston

Domestic abuse and the family by Maria Endall, Family Solicitor, Hayes + Storr
Domestic violence, or domestic abuse as it is now known, is a criminal matter. As its name would suggest, it happens within the context of family or between couples, and therefore, affects many of our clients. Sadly though, very few people seek the help and protection that is available to them.
Domestic abuse has been making the headlines over recent years, beginning with the introduction of The Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, known as ‘Clare’s Law’, named after Clare Wood, a 36 year old mother who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in 2009. Clare never knew he had a history of violence against women.
The scheme is designed to protect potential victims from an abusive situation before it ends in tragedy, allowing partners, friends and family to ask police for information about someone’s criminal record and whether they pose a potential risk. In 2012, the government’s definition of domestic violence and abuse was amended to include controlling and coercive behaviour. Currently, the new Domestic Abuse Bill which is being considered by parliament, aims to go further by including economic abuse and other forms of manipulative non-physical abuse.
However, greater awareness and support of victims is required. People often don’t reach out for support, for fear of reprisals from the perpetrator, especially if they believe they cannot be adequately protected by the police.
Where they have children, victims may also fear social services becoming involved if they contact the police and worry that their children may be taken away from them. There are many other factors that may prevent victims seeking help, including financial, cultural, psychological or social reasons.
Local organisations offering support for victims include Leeway based in Norwich and Pandora based in King’s Lynn. Recently, Pandora received £85,000 in extra funding from the Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner in recognition of the important work they do. Pandora currently supports 300 women on a one-to-one basis and around 140 children in the course of a year. Pandora offers a 10-week recovery programme for women who have left abusive partners to help them get their lives back together.
If you are experiencing domestic abuse and have children, you have a duty to protect your children from the abuse; therefore, you may need advice in relation to obtaining an injunction against your partner or ex-partner. You may also find that you require advice in relation to divorce, finances and living or contact arrangements for your children. Any abuse you or your children have suffered may impact on the decisions you make in these areas, and on any court proceedings taken in respect of these issues. As family lawyers, and specifically as members
s
of Resolution; a national organisation of family lawyers committed to non-confrontational separation, we always look out for the presence of, or risk of domestic abuse being perpetrated against our clients, and we very often see it in cases where it is not the primary reason for the client seeking our advice. However, once we become aware of the circumstances we are able to offer additional legal and practical advice to our clients who may be feeling vulnerable.
Domestic abuse happens to both men and women, to people of all ages and of all backgrounds and occupations, both as to the abused and the abuser.
This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.
If you would like further advice on this matter please contact Maria on 01328 863231. If you require advice on any other legal matter call 01263 825959 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

North Norfolk District Council hosts Environment Assembly
Action taken following Council’s declaration of a climate emergency North Norfolk District Council hosted an Environment Assembly at the Atrium in North Walsham on Thursday 15 August.
to our environment.
“This is a great starting point to help us understand what concerns local people about climate change and to work together to develop an Environmental Charter and demonstrates that we are taking positive action following our declaration of a climate emergency.”
The event comes after North Norfolk District Council was the first council in Norfolk to declare a climate emergency. The declaration was made in April at a meeting of Full Council where councillors committed to recognising the devastating impact of global temperature change and taking immediate action.
Members of the public will have another opportunity to have their say at the Council’s annual, free, Greenbuild event at Felbrigg Hall on 7 and 8 September.
Cllr. Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said of the decision “As a coastal district, North Norfolk is in the front line of the impacts of climate change whilst our fishing industry depends on sustaining stocks in our marine environment.
Cllr. Lloyd added “Greenbuild is a unique event that will be full of high quality advice and information about living a greener lifestyle, with something for all the family to enjoy. We will also be sharing findings from the Environment Assembly and giving members of the public another opportunity to have their say on what matters to them.”
“Time is running out and we need to be bold and brave.”
Members of the public were invited to drop-in during the afternoon where elected members and NNDC Officers were on hand to discuss what the Council is looking to do to tackle the climate emergency, local and national environmental concerns and what steps it has already taken to address climate change.
A second session held in the evening featured key speakers and a workshop where members of the public discussed environmental issues that matter to them, enabling us to work together for a better future for North Norfolk.
Always a warm welcome

‘Make more mates and meet more often’ urges North Walsham based friendly society
A north Norfolk friendship group is hosting a special get-together to encourage people to make new friends after it was revealed that almost half of adults with significant friends (48%) only get together with them less than once a month.
NAaFI CAFE
The independent research, conducted by YouGov on behalf of the Oddfellows, also shows that a fifth (20%) of GB adults, aged 55 and over, go for at least six months without being socially active. That includes attending things like social events, going to church, or simply grabbing a coffee with a friend.
By contrast, 83% of the Oddfellows’ own members say they spend time with a significant friend once a month or more, with 50% saying they see their good mates at least once a week.
With friendship a hugely important factor for both health and happiness, the Oddfellows Trafalgar Branch in North Walsham is encouraging residents to join them for a special coffee morning on Saturday 14 September from 9.30am until 12 noon, at the St Nicholas Rooms, North Walsham, organised as part of Friendship Month – which runs for the whole of September.
Angie Batson, Development Officer for Trafalgar, North Walsham, Oddfellows, said “Many studies have proved how regular company is essential to living a happier life. In fact, some would say that spending time with friends is as important as eating healthily or exercising. Friends aren’t just there to socialise with, they provide support and comfort in times of need. Most of us make our friends through work, family or education. As we age and our life changes, we have less access to these everyday social opportunities, which can contribute towards social isolation in a huge way.”
This September marks the 10th anniversary of Friendship Month, the

annual awareness campaign run by the Oddfellows to celebrate the power of friendship, highlight the need to keep social as we age, and to signpost people to ways they can stay connected to their communities.
Angie continued “The Oddfellows is here to offer friendship and support all year round, but every September, as part of Friendship Month, we put on lots of exciting events which are perfect for first introductions. If someone is unsure about what to expect, please contact us so we can put you at ease. If we know someone new is coming on their own, we’ll always ensure there’s someone for them to ‘buddy up’ with until they find their feet.

Cromer Chamber
Greenbuild 2019 –
North Norfolk District Council to host free event at Felbrigg Hall
As the dust settles on another successful Cromer Carnival, the town’s businesses and traders can take a well-earned breather after a hectic and, hopefully, profitable week for the town.
Greenbuild, the region’s leading green lifestyle event, and hub for all things sustainable, energy efficient and local, is back on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 September. The annual event is free, family-friendly, and packed with inspiration for making eco-friendly choices. This year’s event, sponsored by Inspired Renewables (Gold) and Shell (Silver), marks 15 years of Greenbuild and promises to be one of the biggest ever, as almost 100 exhibitors, including the ever popular craft and farmers’ market, catering area for visitors to enjoy a bite to eat and children’s entertainers, will attend the event in the grounds of the National Trust’s venue Felbrigg Hall, near Cromer. Importantly, the event is more accessible than ever. North Norfolk District Council has teamed up with North Norfolk Community Transport to provide a free shuttle bus service from Cromer train and bus stations which co-ordinate with the bus and train times. Visit www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/greenbuild for timetables (and lots more!) The Council is also looking to build on the great success of the Environment Assembly which was held recently in North Walsham. Those who did not have the opportunity to attend will have the chance to discuss the issues raised at the meeting and share their thoughts and ideas on environmental issues with councillors.
Chamber President, Sam Grout, said “It’s been another successful year. As ever, our thanks and congratulations go to the Cromer Carnival Committee and to all the volunteers who work so hard to produce an event which really does bring the crowds in.”
While the town’s businesses benefit enormously from the influx of visitors, they also support many of the Carnival events and competitions with sponsorships, staff time and donations of prizes for competitions like the Waiters & Waitresses and the Crabbing, to name just two.
This year also saw another intriguing set of puzzles for younger visitors with so many shop windows taking part in the ‘Spot what’s Odd’ competition. The prizes were vouchers that could be spent in any of the Chamber’s participating businesses.
Sam Grout added “I am proud of how so many Chamber members step up to support the work of the Carnival Committee in making the week such a huge success. First and foremost, it’s about everyone having a bit of fun and enjoying themselves. But for the many of the town’s businesses, it is one of our most important times of the year. It puts Cromer on the map and gives us a profile from which to build on our success all year round.”
Greenbuild offers something for the whole family. There will be plenty going on to keep children entertained, including theatre shows, face painting, a free children’s quiz with fantastic prizes. There will be exhibitors of green technologies like Solar PV panels, biomass boilers, ground and air source heat pumps, electric cars and bikes and experts in local and traditional products such as heritage plastering and willow basket making. Attendees can also cast their vote for the People’s Choice Graham Allen design award.

Cllr Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of the Council, said “This promises to be another exciting and informative event packed with information on environmental issues while providing entertainment for all the family. I am particularly looking forward to sharing feedback with visitors from our recent environmental assembly.” Another ever-popular aspect of the event, are the compost vouchers which can be purchased for £3 for 3 bags of compost (subject to availability). Council staff from Planning and Building Control, Environmental Protection, Public Protection, HR, Economic Development, Coastal, Revenue and Benefits, Waste and Recycling, Civil Contingencies and Sports Development as well as the Countryside team will be ready to chat with visitors and answer any questions they may have and to offer advice. The gates open on both days at 10.30am and close on the Saturday at 4.30pm and Sunday at 4pm.

Hedgehog Haven
Cromer Railway Signal Box
Pictured is a hedgehog self-anointing. It salivates copiously and when it has a frothy mass of saliva on its tongue, it twists its body and throws its head over its shoulder to be able to flick the froth onto its spines. Sometimes it will lift one foot off the ground and lean so far over that it falls over! It sometimes happens when a hog is moved into a different hut.
If you've ever wondered how Britain's railways were controlled before the days of computers, the answer is – by mechanical computers.
Every railway signal box was a mechanical computer and controlled its own length of the railway. Very few of these are left today. One which has been out of railway use since 2000, but is still complete, is Cromer signal box. It is the only Midland and Great Northern Railway concrete signal box left, and is run by volunteers under the auspices of the North Norfolk Railway.
It is not usually open to the public, but on September 20 and 21 (Friday and Saturday), as part of the national Heritage Open Days movement, the signal box will be open between 10.30am and 3.30pm. There is no parking on the site, which is between the old cemetery and the Argos delivery parking lot on Holt Road, but it's an easy walk from the town centre. Please note that it is not suitable for the disabled as it remains as it was in the 1960s and there are steps and uneven ground.
I currently have two sets of mothers with hoglets. The latest one came in on Bank Holiday Monday. Huts and sheds were being dismantled when a nest with mother and four babies was discovered. Thankfully the people who found the nest did all the right things by wearing gardening gloves and picking the whole nest up, placing them in a large box and getting them to me to lift straight into an outside hut.
It's always a worry when a nest is disturbed as mother is highly likely to reject the babies and hand rearing is never easy especially if the hoglets eyes are not open. I am having to keep a close watch on them.
Cromer lifeboat is spending some time away from its home town – undergoing routine repairs The crew from RNLI Cromer have undertaken the first part of the journey and bought back a relief lifeboat.
The whole lever frame and the locking (the computer part) is still in place and can be used by visitors to set up the line for trains – the trains, of course, take no notice as they are controlled from Norwich, and roll past the signal box into Cromer station regardless.
The relief lifeboat number 16 – 01, which means it was the first in the Tamar class is named ‘RNLB Peter and Lesley-Jane Nicholson’. It can be seen in the home station boathouse at the end of the pier. The Tamar class Lester, which is

Local Guild to Celebrate Ruby Anniversary
The Norfolk Countryside Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers will be celebrating 40 years of creativity in 2020. To mark the event, the Guild will be holding an exhibition and tea party at Ludham village hall, Ludham Village Hall, Norwich Road NR29 5QQ from 1.30pm – 4.30pm on the afternoon of 28 September. The exhibition will feature all things red, including a magnificent blanket incorporating felted, knitted, woven and hand dyed panels made by Guild members. Textile Artist and Guild member, Ros Wilson, will be giving a talk entitled “A Passion for Red to fit in with the Ruby-themed celebration. The Guild is part of a National Association founded in 1955 with the aim of helping bring together the community of craft Weavers, Spinners and Dyers. The Association is today the umbrella organisation for 100 local Guilds across the UK, providing education, a quarterly ‘Journal’ and a bi-annual National Exhibition. As a result of this support, ancient textile skills are kept alive and knowledge shared. “In this world of virtual games and smart phones it is important for everyone’s wellbeing to enjoy a hands-on craft, says Sue Mitchell, Chairman of the Norfolk Countryside Guild. “Our 60 members are always buzzing with ideas and happy to share their skills.

Surf life-saving in North Norfolk receives further support from Sheringham Shoal Community Fund
The Norfolk Countryside Guild meets weekly at a variety of venues across north-east Norfolk. Regular workshops help members to expand their skills. “Workshops are run by very experienced Guild members and visiting tutors to give as much variety as possible, explains Margaret Fletcher, the Bookings Secretary. “This year we have enjoyed a wide range of workshops, such as ecodyeing, felting, basket-making and inkle (narrow band) weaving with lots more planned for the rest of the year. The Norfolk Countryside Guild certainly has much to celebrate.
Following its support for the North Norfolk Surf Life Saving Club (NN SLSC) in 2017, the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund is continuing to encourage and support the growth of this life saving sport in North Norfolk, making a grant to the recently formed Mundesley Surf Life Saving Club (Mundesley SLSC).
The grant is being used to fund Level 1 and 2 coaching training for number of the Club's volunteer group leaders, and to purchase some much needed equipment including rescue boards, marker buoys, and beach gazebos for changing.

The impetus for the formation of the Club has come from Mundesley resident Julie Coleman, a long-time participant at NN SLSC, who said "I am passionate about encouraging young people to use and enjoy the sea and its beaches as a playground, and surf life saving teaches them how to do so in a safe and responsible manner."
She continued "The support from the local community has been incredible, and we now have 24 regular attendees at our weekly sessions on Mundesley beach. There is also a growing number of children and young people waiting to get involved as soon as there are sufficient trained group leaders available. We hope some of these will be able to take part in the Surf Cadet programme ‘taster sessions' we plan to hold during the school summer holidays. We are so grateful to the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund, because none of this would have been possible without its support."
Karl Butler, the Power Plant Manager of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm, said "This project is an excellent fit for the Sheringham Shoal theme around marine safety, and I believe it will provide the young people involved with a valuable set of transferable skills."
In September this year Mundesley SLSC with take part in its first event - the Eastern Region Surf Life Saving competition which will be held at Sea Palling in North Norfolk.

Bothered by Mummy Tummy?
Now you have a safe and effective option to do something about it. Colishall Cosmetic Clinic provides several effective options including a mini-tummy tuck.
What is a mini tummy tuck or mini-abdominoplasty procedure? Mini tummy tuck is a procedure to address stubborn area of stretched, sagging skin and fat on your lower tummy. Pregnancy, aging and genetics are common culprits behind a belly pouch and unfortunately, diet and exercise are often ineffective in helping to get rid of it. If you are bothered by the appearance of your lower abdomen, a mini tummy tuck may help you get the results you want with a relatively short recovery. Mini-tummy tuck reduces sagging skin and fat from lower abdomen improving body contours and silhouette.
How is mini-tummy tuck different from a full tummy tuck? Full tummy tuck is a major operation performed under general anaesthesia. It is suitable for patients after massive weight loss, patients with severe stretch marks all over their abdomen or in patients with significant muscle wall laxity or abdominal hernias. It requires a longer scar, wide undermining [which risks blood supply to the skin] hence liposuction is not carried out during this procedure. There is a scar around the belly button as it has to be moved. It is a major procedure that provides a tighter but not necessary slimmer appearance.
Mini tummy tuck is a good option in patients with skin excess in lower part of their belly. Mini tummy tuck is a less invasive option. This uses a relatively short incision in the same area of a C-section scar and avoids the incision around the belly button. This is often performed on women who have mild sagging or post-baby pouch, stretch marks from pregnancy, or C-section scarring. This procedure focuses only on the area below the belly button, not the entire abdomen.
We nearly always add liposuction to our tummy tucks to sculpt the body in 3 dimension. The technique known also as mini lipo-abdominoplasty with no undermining, makes it possible to safely combine liposculpture of the abdomen with lower abdomen skin tightening. Unlike traditional tummy tucks, this operation allows for more contouring of the abdomen. It gives a result that is both tight and shapely.
North Norfolk Used Cars
Am I a good candidate for a mini tummy tuck? A mini tummy tuck may be a great option if you are healthy and at a stable weight, without a large excess of abdominal skin. Typically, the best candidates are primarily concerned about loose skin or a protruding lower belly only—if you have significant stretched, sagging skin or muscles, a full tummy tuck may achieve better results.

Cromer Times Issue 573 7th September 2019
NWT is Charity of the Year for North Norfolk District Council North Norfolk District Council’s Chairman has invited Norfolk Wildlife Trust to be his Charity of the Year, with money raised supporting conservation grazing and family learning.
Dr Clive Stockton has a personal life-long association with nature and wished to support a charity that specifically works to conserve the fragile habitats of Norfolk and raise awareness of the importance of wildlife. Funds raised by NNDC will be used in two key areas of NWT’s work across Norfolk: to support conservation grazing with rare native breeds and to extend engagement with young children in Sure Start centres. Conservation grazing with native breed cattle, sheep and ponies protects important areas for wildlife. Without regular grazing, many of our rare and fragile habitats and the species they support would be at risk of being overwhelmed by more dominant plants. NNDC has already shown its own commitment to conservation grazing through the establishment of its Bagot
goat herd, 15 of which are on long-term loan to NWT in the Brecks.
NWT’s Sure Start with Nature project introduced children and their carers to the natural world at the very start of their lives. The 2018-19 pilot was run in partnership with Sure Start Children’s Centres in Great Yarmouth, Thetford and Corpusty, and included monthly indoor and outdoor nature-focused activities such Dr Clive Stockton as interactive sessions, sensory play and guided nature walks. Funds from NNDC would contribute to a continuing the work and, with more funding, establishing a bigger project in Norfolk from next year to help families learn about nature and wildlife together, and embrace the natural world.
New E-Service giving free access to digital newspapers and magazines launches in Norfolk Libraries A new service giving Norfolk library members access to digital copies of magazines and newspapers from the UK and around the world is now available and it’s all completely free.
PressReader provides access to full digital editions of nearly all major national UK newspapers, as well as a wide range of top UK magazines covering a broad range of subjects from travel and food, to politics and fashion. Digital copies of major newspapers and magazines from around the world can be accessed in their original language, and can be translated into different languages, so people whose first language is not English can read content in their native tongue. It also has the facility to enlarge and read text aloud, making it accessible to people with visual impairments. With e-book borrowing from Norfolk’s libraries increasing year on year, this new service will give people an even wider variety of electronic reading
choices. 160,000 e-books were borrowed in 2018 compared with 110,000 in 2015, an increase of more than 45%.
Councillor Margaret Dewsbury, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “PressReader is a fantastic new digital service bringing a much wider choice of magazines and newspapers for our library members. E-reading is becoming increasingly popular and it means that people can now access magazines and newspapers direct from their own home, all for free. Everyone can make use of this, so long as you’re a signed up library member, whether you’re studying a foreign language, trying out a new hobby, looking to keep up with news, or read your favourite magazine, PressReader is a great tool.”
There are still printed newspapers and magazines on offer at libraries, for those who prefer physical copies. Alan Cash, a Norfolk Library member recently
downloaded the PressReader app on his tablet: “I have been impressed by the huge range of publications available for free. The setup process with my library card was straightforward and the app is easy to navigate. A real bonus has been the wide range of publications available from around the world which is excellent for anyone like me who is currently learning a foreign language. I have sent the details round to my teacher and the rest of the group as it’s a lot more engaging than reading dialogues from a text book. There’s also a handy translate option built into the app if you get stuck and a ‘listen’ function so you can hear the pronunciation.” Anyone with a Norfolk Libraries account can access PressReader content from anywhere at any time, either via a web browser, or using the free Android or iOS app. Customers can access as many titles as they wish and download them to read offline.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Lena the lovely kitten pictured last time, has now been chosen, together with Bassanio, a lovely long-haired grey boy. Irrespective of colour, all our cats and kittens are re-homed for an Adoption Fee of £50, after being given a clean bill of health by our vets, vaccinated, micro chipped, treated for fleas and worms, 4 weeks free Pet Insurance and with neutering paid for, if applicable. To us, colour is not important, although temperament certainly is. The two long term residents who have now been re-homed have gone to stables as they do not appreciate too much contact with people but still need to be cared for. We know they will have a lovely home as they will be joining another cat with a similar nature that we re-homed over 15 years ago.
Last time I mentioned my own cat Mylee’s health problem and advised I would continue her story. We decided to follow our vets’ advice and start the new treatment. Initially this involved x-rays to establish whether there were any roots remaining in her gums and the need to remove any that were found. She also had a biopsy taken to confirm that the treatment was appropriate and while she was under the anaesthetic, some of the new treatment was injected into the lesions in her mouth. All went well until the end of the treatment when she arrested and had to be given CPR. She was then put on a drip and had to stay at the vets until later that day to make sure she had fully recovered. She was given pain relief and we then had to wait for confirmation before continuing treatment. Once this was received she started having injections of Interferon, plus pain relief. The treatment was given for 5 days in a row, then twice a week for two weeks and after that once a week. As her mouth was still quite sore she was now receiving pain relief on a daily basis. However, as she then started to lose her coat at the site of the injections we had to look at other ways of giving her the treatment. More of this next time.
At present all our calls (apart from those for neutering) are answered by Stephanie on the number shown below. Other branches already adopt a

different approach to phone calls and, as this is a very demanding role, we are now looking at the ways they deal with them to see what the best option would be for our branch. Most appear to have options, Malcolm, another one of our older kittens once the call is taken, to press different buttons depending on the enquiry and, if we adopt this approach, it would take the pressure off one person. Obviously, we would need people to be able to deal with calls from the different options so if you feel this is one way you could help the branch, please given Stephanie a call or complete the contact form on our website..
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.
