Felbrigg Park Monthly Walk on 16 October 9am - 11am - this walk caters for all levels of ability. We will take a leisurely walk around the park & lake, route dependent on the local bird and other wildlife likely to be present on the day. Please wear clothing appropriate to the weather - footpaths in Felbrigg can be muddy at any time of the year. Meet at Sexton's Lodge car park, off Lion's Mouth, NR11 8PS at the western end of the estate. To keep the Club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. As usual, children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs.

Horsey Walk for autumn migrants on 19 October 9am – 1.30pm - we plan to walk along the coast, with a loop inland to Horsey Mere and Brograve Mill, looking for autumn migrants and early winter visitors. Meet at the car-park at Horsey Gap (the car park for visiting the seal colony, TG463241, nearest postcode NR29 4EQ). To reach the car park leave the A149 coast road at the sharp right-hand (coming from the Happisburgh direction) bend at TG460236, and drive towards the coast along a track for a couple of hundred metres. In autumn the car park is usually unmanned and parking free. From the car-park we will head south-east by the coastal dunes, turn inland along the Nelson Head track and continue to Horsey Mill, where there are facilities. We will then walk around the edge of the mere to Brograve Mill, before looping back to the Horsey Gap car park. This is a longish walk (several miles), a short section of which is along the road, but it offers a nice range of habitats. This is a return visit to an area NENBC last visited in 2017, when we found a very creditable 55 species. As always with autumn, the potential birds depend very much on the prevailing winds and weather. A telescope is useful if you have one. This area is very exposed and can be bitterly cold in winter, so good footwear and clothing is a must. Children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. To keep the Club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. Leader Andy Clarke.

As reported in the last edition we progressed to the semi-final of the subsidiary cup at Cawston BC in their annual floodlit competition.

Up against a combined Lyng and Reepham team, Cromer with their 2 guests scored a fairly convincing 68-49 victory with wins on all 4 rinks to go to the final. Unfortunately, they came up against a strong Coltishall team and lost on all 4 rinks, 43-84. The green has closed and work has begun but members are very welcome to enjoy our clubhouse facilities during the winter. We meet for a (very!) short mat bowls session every Wednesday afternoon at 1.45pm and meet every Friday evening from 7pm. Anyone is welcome to come to the clubhouse on Thursday 7 November, from 1pm to 4pm to peruse and buy a second-hand book or two. Visit us on the Runton Road. Donations of books will also be gratefully accepted.

Details of fixtures, results, history, honours, and club news/photos can be accessed at cromermarramsbowlsclub.com or more details from Neil 01263 513901.

Well Done Itteringham Village Community!

This year the Itteringham Village Shop will be celebrating 25 years of the Association running our shop, following the deaths of Mr and Mrs Fairhead.

Such a tremendous achievement ... we have overcome adversity, in many forms, including the threat of eviction and closure! Following our ‘Save the Shop’ campaign, we have successfully secured a substantial lease of 99 years from the NNDC. We have also been successful in obtaining grants for maintaining the shop’s continued trading.

Currently the shop has been shortlisted for a best regional award in the Rural Business Awards 2019/20.

Date for your diary! 19 October ... CURRYLICIOUS EVENING ... serving delicious curries from 6pm onwards! Eat in or Take Away.

Our celebration will be a fitting recognition of all our customer support, our local suppliers support, and the hard work and selflessness given by the shop staff and the volunteers over the 25 years, in order to maintain a rural community shop in the village.

Overstrand Evening WI

Our speaker for the evening last month was Helen Duncan who had Meditation as her subject.

She spoke ahead of the business part of the proceedings and had an endearing, laid back approach to what might have been a ‘heavy’ delivery.

It was a pity that attendance was thin as a result of members’ holidays. Absentees missed a thought provoking talk studded with useful, practical tips, many of which were linked to our own awareness of something we all do constantly, yet pay no heed to, our breathing!

It gave us plenty to think about whilst we had our refreshment break. A mention of Christmas lunch, to be decided at the next meeting. The sale table will probably become a more permanent feature giving members the chance of an item unwanted by somebody else.

Janet Ellis gave concise summaries of Rockstock and our own WI website. Our next meeting will be on 17 October when our speaker will be Eddie Anderson. New members are welcome.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS in in 2019? 20 19 ? SOLICITORS

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time fo or many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2019 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Council to install electric charge points in public car parks

Project aims to make electric vehicles accessible

NNDC’s Cabinet has approved a proposal which will see the installation of Electric Vehicle Chargepoints (EVCs) in seven car parks across the district. The project, estimated to cost around £250,000, will be funded jointly by the Council and The Office for Low Emissions Vehicles (OLEV), a cross-Government team which aims to promote the use of electric vehicles by helping councils to provide the necessary infrastructure to allow their introduction. Subject to the OLEV funding, it is expected that EVCs will be installed in NNDC owned car parks in Sheringham, Cromer, Holt, Fakenham, Wells and North Walsham, as well as some at the Council offices in Cromer. The installation should be complete by spring 2020.

The proposal aims to meet the expected rise in demand for electric vehicles from 200,000 to 6 million on the road by 2030. It has been identified that most current Electric Vehicle users will charge their vehicles at home. By installing these facilities in areas where many nearby properties do not have their own off-street parking, the Council aims to provide charging points and make EVs more accessible to all residents and visitors. Additionally, the proposal will support the economies of local towns as the charging points will be available to visitors to Council car parks, as well as residents. The project forms part of NNDC’s commitment to environmental sustainability, with the Council seeking to make its own operations carbon neutral by 2030.

Cllr Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “We are delighted to bring forward this new initiative which will see 38 Electric Vehicle Chargepoints introduced across the District. This is just the first step on the Council’s path towards delivering our new ‘greener’ agenda. Whilst we are working to reduce our own Carbon footprints we want to help residents and visitors to play their part too.”

Chamber of Commerce

Tuliptree Fabrics would like to invite you to their new craft centre in Marsham.

You would be forgiven for thinking that many Cromer businesses see this as a time to put their feet up and relax after the busy summer. Nothing could be further from the truth! The summer, especially Carnival week, is certainly the busiest time of the year for many – but not all – members of the Cromer Chamber. But very few can afford to relax now that autumn is upon us.

* Quilting and Patchwork * Dress making - Pattern Making * Embroidery * * Cake Decoration * Polymer Clay Creation * Wet and Dry Felting * * Jewellery and Bead Making * Stained Glass * Flower Arranging * * Crochet and Macrame * Mixed Media Art * Drawing * Painting * Not only all the above, we now have our very own Tea Room “Bobbins”, where we will be serving fresh made sandwiches, home made cakes, scones, pastries together with speciality Teas and Coffee.

Summer’s over, the nights are drawing in and the kids are back at school.

Most Chamber members with businesses targeting visitors to the town reported a good summer season. Visitor numbers were strong and the weather was reasonably kind to us. But the Chamber has for some time now been keen to promote the town as an all-yearround destination. Indeed, September and October see a healthy flow of visitors who come precisely to avoid the peak summer period.

In the coming months, Chamber members will be involved in events promoting the town, firstly to the Coach operators who bring in so many visitors and also to the Walkers-are-Welcome organisation who have done so much to boost the profile of North Norfolk as a destination for keen walkers. Both will be holding events in Cromer during October.

At the same time, we will be working with Merchants’ Place to offer training events on First Aid and Fire & Safety.

All of this will be happening while we keep one eye on the next big events marked in the calendar - October half-term and, of course, Christmas and all the events around it.

Not only will we have all our fabulous fabrics and gifts, but we will also be delivering even more classes/workshops, to include

Sheringham Stroke Support Group

Sheringham Stroke Support Group restarted at the beginning of September after our Summer break.

Arriving home he joined the EDP as a printer and then went on to the Eastern Daily Press which he retired from in 1995.

I apologise for the mistake I made in my last article. We pay up to £30 a round trip to get stroke survivors to and from our meetings by taxi so they can meet up, make new friends and spend an enjoyable afternoon with us.

One of our members Keith Wills spoke about his youth as a cadet in Exeter joining St Johns Ambulance at the age of 13 and especially going to the Exeter football matches and speedway at weekends on duty. Keith went on to do a six year apprenticeship with the Western Times Company deferring his call up for National Service in the 1950s.

Hope to see you soon - you can bring a wife, husband, partner, friend or carer. We have a lovely cuppa courtesy of Pat.

Chrissy Foster- Worton

He then received a typed letter saying his time had come to serve his country promising him 4/6pence a day with a deduction of 6.4 pence for National Insurance plus a timetable of trains to get him to the interview. The letter also said that he was advised to start a savings account. As a young man he wanted to go into the Marines but found out he had to serve for three years so he joined the Army for two years going to Aldershot then Netley near Southampton to train in the Medical Core, later specialising in Mental Health and psychiatric care.

Keith received another letter to say he was going to Cyprus but he ended up going straight to Singapore's Military Hospital which had a large football pitch behind it. Patients were old regular soldiers as well as young men like himself all needing specialist care and understanding. When well enough they were sent home in fours with escorts.

Email: our1stchoice@aol.com

Keith finished his two years National Service coming home on the military ship called ‘Nevasa’ which took several weeks to reach the UK. He had visited Hong Kong, Peking, Shankai, Kuala Lumpa, India & Ceylon (now called Shri Lanka) calling in at Aden and other military bases, just to mention a few of the interesting places he visited in his own time.

When Autumn Leaves Begin to Fall …

It’s a glorious Autumn Thursday in Cromer, the leaves are turning red and gold and the crops are being harvested. Many of us are enjoying the sunshine as we go about our daily lives, including work, childcare, hobbies, eldercare and the myriad of other activities we get involved in. At some point in our day we give thought to what we’d like to eat for lunch, or tea, or supper and even breakfast the next day. It’s no big deal. We pop to the local shop or the supermarket, choose, pay for and enjoy our food.

Unfortunately, it’s not like that for all of us. Some of us do all the same activities until it comes to thinking about food and this is where the Foodbank with seven centres in North Norfolk steps in to help.

Picture the scene. Behind the doors of Cromer Methodist Church Hall, a group of people who are receiving short term help with providing food for themselves and their families gather at Cromer Foodbank to collect their groceries which are generously provided by those of us who recognise how tough living is when food is not readily available. And this scene happens in the other six Foodbank Centres across North Norfolk, each open one day every week.

Don’t imagine for one minute that you know what kind of people use the Foodbank. It would be so easy to stereotype. In fact, Foodbank clients are from all age groups, from the youngest to the oldest in our society. People from different backgrounds and with

different life and work experience. Some are families, some are alone, others come with a friend for support. Everyone is welcomed by members of the Foodbank Team. The intention is to give help through quiet and effective support at a time when people most need it and that intention is palpable. Food, advice, a helping hand, a listening ear, reassurance, a kind word, the opportunity to connect with others and a cuppa are all part of what this amazing organisation offers to its clients.

It is not easy to ask for help with providing food for your family and there is the sense of many contrasting human emotions – feelings of lack and hope for abundance, fear and increased courage, embarrassment and renewed confidence.

Be assured though that sad it is not. Cromer Foodbank and its other six centres in Holt, Sheringham, North Walsham, Stalham and the two in Aylsham, excel in making people feel welcome and that it’s ok to need and accept short term help when life is not going to plan. And there is a definite buzz about them all that confirms this.

The backbone of our organisation is our volunteers. Our Foodbank Centres are only as good as the people who choose to give their time and energy to us so that they can help their fellow citizens. Volunteers’ backgrounds and experience are varied and the professional and life skills they bring to us mean that we

give the best service to our clients. Perhaps you could help too.

In the words of one of the 120 people who currently volunteer to help us, “I have the greatest respect for people who are facing these challenges and I am not sure I would have been able to cope faced with any of the same situations. I cannot bear the thought of people, especially children, going hungry in 2019. That’s why I come here. However small my contribution, I know I am helping and that gives me back far more than I could ever imagine.”

The Autumn marks the ending of the Summer and the beginning of the Winter for all of us. Food is gathered and stored for the coming Winter season, including the celebration of Christmas. Even though the days are short and often dark and cold, most of us look forward to the highlights of the Winter season. This is when we most need your support to ensure that our clients can look forward too. Thank you. Please visit us at www.cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk or email info@cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk

Dum di dum di dum di dum... by Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr Trust and charity lawyers across the country are bristling at the lack of basic research by the writers and producers of the long-running radio soap (or rural docudrama) ‘The Archers’. Perhaps we should get out more!

By way of background: June Spencer who plays Peggy Woolley, the matriarch of the eponymous family, and who has just celebrated her 100th birthday in real life, has been rewarded by a special plot line in which she stars. It has dramatically set some cats among the pigeons of the various Archer family strands, whilst satisfying the current zeitgeist of environmental awareness. All very apposite!

Originally, Peggy set up a ‘Family Charitable Trust’ with a sum of half a million pounds to be awarded to a farming family member with the best sustainable environmental idea. No actual action seemed to be a requirement. Her son Tony who has farmed organically for decades has taken umbrage (Ambridge?) and is boycotting it in protest against the jumpingon-the-fashionable-bandwagon brigade. All very jolly!

Now Peggy, following passionate lobbying by her socially-conscious cleaner Emma Grundy, has decided to open it up to the entire population of Ambridge, not just her family.

This is a wise Inheritance Tax-planning move,

as the Trust now stands a better chance of satisfying the fundamental Public Benefit Test necessary for to achieve charitable status. Perhaps the BBC did take legal advice, after all?

There is a long history of illustrious lawyers following The Archers. My tutor at university once told me she did her weekly ironing listening to the Sunday omnibus edition. A highly respected Chancery QC became passionate about this legal faux pas at a recent conference I attended and told me later that she knew the little that she did about rural life through the show.

Oddly, canny Peggy (iron fist in a velvet glove) took advice about setting up the trust from her Financial Adviser, a smooth operator in a Range Rover with blacked-out windows. Let’s hope that his professional indemnity insurance is up to scratch. There is history of The Archer members being ripped off by dodgy financial advisors and there seems every chance that could happen again.

Peggy has now announced that the advisor has found Trustees for her; when those most suited to the role are right in front of Peggy’s nose and already known to listeners. Escaped Ab Fab character, Peggy’s daughter Lilian, is to be the Trust Administrator, which promises some true slap-stick potential, darling!

The Archers has always been kind to its lawyers. They have been credited with decency and (not always legally-accurate) competence, as well as a rare and modern diversity. Both Usha Gupta, a solicitor married to the Ambridge vicar, and Anna Tregorran, a “high-flying barrister”, who successfully defended Helen Archer against a charge of attempted murder, when sensationally, she stabbed her coercive-controlling psychopath of a husband Rob Titchener come across as good women. Taster days at Age Concern North Norfolk Day Services Hub

Age Concern North Norfolk is an over 55s Day Services Hub which is based in Sheringham, which runs Tuesday to Friday. The aim of this service is to bring together those in need of companionship, to build new relationships and to take part in activities that encourage mental well-being and stimulate thinking.

We provide shared interest which may include reminiscence, Carer’s support, personal care, bathing service, toileting, foot care, exercise, medication given, light entertainment, indoor/outdoor activities, computer/laptop sessions and sing-a-long.

For older people living on their own it is particularly important as it provides a safe and reliable source of social contact, thereby reducing the risk of isolation and exclusion. Around fifty percent of those who attend the Day Services Hub have disabilities including dementia, alzheimers and mental illness.

We are offering a free trial day, on either a Wednesday or a Thursday, 9am to 3pm, you’ll be getting a taste of the different activities we do, you’re more than welcome to take part as much or little as you like – whatever makes you feel comfortable. Whether that’s sitting back and observing or getting involved in the fun and games, our staff and customers are happy to welcome you.

If you would like to attend you pay £5 for the day, which includes breakfast, teas/coffee and a delicious two course lunch. To book a place contact Alison on 01263 821188.

We would also like to give a big thank you to all the people and organisations who helped us raise £30,000 to enable us to update our bathroom. We now have a tilting bath that has an opening side panel so customers can access the bath easily, with staff support if required. We have also extended the bathroom to allow for a seated shower.

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

At our September meeting Fiona Harrison gave a talk and demonstration on Flower of Scotland.

She began with an arrangement representing a waterfall in a hollowed out log. This was filled with trailing ivy, larch cones, snowberries to represent droplets of water, white dahlias and anthuriums, and bear grass threaded with crystal beads for some sparkle.

We then went into Fingals Cave with tall cardboard tubes for the rock formation with some smaller tubes for the flowers. Each of these tubes was filled with ferns, small bunches of lavender, bear grass and lilac freesias and dark red roses.

The third design was a tribute to Robbie Burns, pot a fleur with sage and winter savoury plants in a bulb bowl with small yoghurt pots planted to contain the flowers. It was topped with a wreath ring covered with sisal shaggy black wool with touches of red. The wee pots were filled with twigs, red roses and lavender.

The next arrangement was in honour of the Scottish Colourists - the design was on top of a tall wooden pillar covered with a bright red chunky bathmat. The bowl on the top was filled with choisya and everything was entwined with multi coloured gerberas.

Lastly we went witchy with a MacBeth cauldron with spider’s web and bats included. Tall dark foliage, rosehips, raffia covered red to represent the flames, lovely dahlias in red orange and purple. An extra pop of colour was provided with tiny orange pom-pom dahlias. Three broomsticks and a large hairy spider finished it off.

The vote of thanks was given by Janice Pope. Best in show in our competition Purple Haze was Liz Crane it contained pittosporum, phormium and various purple flowers from her lovely garden.

We next meet in the Junior School at 7.20pm on 21 October when we have a demonstration by our committee and friends. The competition is ‘Surprise, Surprise’.

Always a warm welcome

We are seeing more customers who have issues with their mobility or who use a wheelchair, therefore we have also had an overhead track fitted to allow people who need to use a hoist, to have access to both the bath and the shower. This new facility has improved our customers experience of bathing, giving them more confidence and so a more pleasurable experience, resulting in an increase of 30% for our bathing service.

William’s marriage ended in divorce in December 1862 and his wife received a substantial payment. It was rumoured that the estate was sold for £130,000 to help pay all the costs. William spent the next four years living in a hotel in Norwich and gained a reputation as a rather eccentric stagecoach driver on the Cromer to Norwich route. He died in February 1866. The new owners of the Felbrigg estate, the Ketton family, agreed that William could be buried in St. Margaret’s Church. Few attended his funeral, mainly men from the coaching community he had got to know well in his last few years. Agnes had two further marriages and died in Northern France in 1894.

The second talk in our series is on Friday 19 October at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Nigel Lloyd will be speaking on the history of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal. Visitors are very welcome. Members £3, visitors £4.

The choir’s next full concert will be on Saturday 30 November in Aylsham Town Hall, the day after Aylsham Christmas Lights Switch-On. Rehearsals have started for a Victorian -themed Christmas Concert. As always, the Some of the Aylsham Singers performing choir would be pleased at Aylsham’s ‘Make Music Day’ to hear from enthusiastic local singers, who would like to rehearse on Wednesday evenings, in preparation for this concert. Some darkly pigmented moles or changing, enlarging ones can indicate a need to see your GP or a dermatologist to exclude melanoma.

Here we discuss some common types of lumps and bumps and treatment options.

Seborrhoic warts and skin tags are very common minor skin lesions which usually do not produce symptoms or turn nasty. These are very easy to remove very successfully with barely noticeable scarring.

Raised flesh coloured moles- these are again very common and usually do not indicate any significant problem. Most remain unchanged for many years. It is best to get them checked if there are any changes or concerns. These can be removed almost instantly with shave excision or vaporised with the laser.

Pigmented moles- are a little bit tricky to remove as we remove these with a margin of surrounding skin and this means the resultant scar is usually much longer than the original mole. We also recommend these be sent for pathological examination. Routine examination of removed tissue is best practice here.

Skin cysts- these can be removed through a very small hole in the overlying skin. We now treat most small and longstanding cysts with the help of lasers.

Lipoma-or fatty lumps can be removed through a very small cut in the skin.

Xanthelasma-these are small whitish fatty deposits around the eyes. Most of these can be very successfully removed under local anaesthesia. If these are very large, especially on lower eyelids then removal in

01603 736487

a hospital setting may be required.

Broken veins/ birthmarks- most of these can be faded with the help of lasers and no surgery is normally required. A few sessions may be needed.

Rhinophyma or bulbous nose due to rosaces- this can be very successfully removed with the help of lasers. We may need to use 2-3 lasers and 3-5 sessions may be required. Results are very gratifying.

Warts- a variety of treatments are available and lasers are one option to cut off the blood supply so warts shrink and disappear. These can also be vaporised with CO2 laser.

Skin cancers-these are treated as a matter of urgency and treatment is available on the NHS. Laser therapy is not standard of care for skin cancers and we do not recommend it.

GP Surgeries open their doors to offer the flu vaccination GP surgeries across Norfolk and Waveney are gearing up to provide special clinics to offer patients their annual flu jab.

Children aged between 2 and 10 years old will be offered the nasal spray vaccination. The adult flu vaccine is offered free to those in groups at particular risk of infection and complications from flu.

The groups being offered the adult flu vaccine are: • Pregnant women • Those aged 65 or over • Those aged under 65 with longterm conditions • Carers

GPs are asking their patients to book a place in forthcoming flu clinics as soon as they are advertised. Alternatively, you can visit your nearest participating pharmacy.

GP surgeries are also testing atrial fibrillation in patients over the age of 65. Although flu

vaccinations are available from other outlets it is only GP surgeries who are offering the additional check for abnormal heart rates at the same time.

Dr Louise Smith, Director of Public Health said: “If you have a bad cold or the flu, you are best to manage your illness from home, without seeing a doctor or visiting a hospital. You shouldn’t need to see your GP unless the symptoms become particularly severe, last far longer than usual or if you have a long-term health condition. If you think you might be suffering from flu and are concerned that your symptoms are worsening you can call NHS 111 for advice.”

In addition to the atrial fibrillation and flu vaccination applicable patients are able to receive Pneumococcal vaccines protecting patients against the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae. The vaccine can prevent some cases of pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis. A pneumococcal infection can affect anyone. However, some people are at higher risk of serious illness and can be given the pneumococcal vaccination on the NHS.

Dr Anoop Dhesi, Chair of North Norfolk CCG and Partner at Stalham Staithe GP Surgery said: “Flu can be incredibly unpleasant for many people but for a select few it can be fatal. The best way for people to protect themselves and loved ones around them is to get the vaccination on offer especially those offered it for free on the NHS.”

A previous pilot programme showed vaccinating children had dual benefit; as well as protecting them from flu, it also protects others, such as parents, grandparents and siblings, as children are ‘super spreaders’ and are much more likely to infect others.

If you are not amongst the eligible categories to receive a flu vaccination free of charge on the NHS, please consider visiting a local pharmacy for the vaccine in order to protect yourself and your family this winter.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Last time I mentioned the guidelines set out by Cats Protection regarding the size of pens we use for the cats in care. One of the reasons for this is to ensure the cats have enough space to express their natural behaviours. All our pens have a separate area for sleeping and sitting and another area which will contain space for the cats and kittens to eat, drink and play. Their litter trays are placed in a quiet corner away from their food and water bowls to ensure they have a certain amount of privacy for toileting. The guidelines also indicate that multi-cat enclosures where domestic cats are allowed to mix, do not meet the cats’ behavioural needs. They also state that feral cats should only be confined for a minimal time for neutering and minor health issues to be resolved and should never be in care for prolonged periods as it can cause the cats considerable mental distress. This is one of the reasons why we are happy to help with the cost of neutering feral colonies but cannot take them into care.

Another reason for keeping the cats separate is to make sure there is no risk of cross infection between the cats while in our care and the importance of this proved obvious when a recent stray came into our care. Octopussy had been taken to Westover Vets as he had been found wandering out in the countryside and with no owner claiming him, he was signed over to us. On arrival he was sneezing continuously so was placed in a pen which was not attached in any way to the other pens and had been given an antibiotic injection to try to clear the infection. As an entire male he would normally have been neutered once we were sure that he had not been reported as lost, but because of the sneezing he had two further antibiotic injections before the decision was made to go ahead with the operation and also to take swabs from his nose to identify what was causing the problem. The results of the swab indicated that he had a bacterial called, Bordetella (the cause of kennel cough in dogs) and a different antibiotic was then given. Bordetella is very infectious

and can be passed on quite easily, which vindicates Cats Protection policy for not mixing cats. Because he had been the last in the line for feeding and cleaning, the chances of the infection being passed to other cats had been limited and no other cat has been infected. Octopussy is one of the friendliest cats we have in care and very popular with all who have met him. When he Octopussy enjoyed his visit had his operation, he took over to the vets for his operation the surgery and received lots of cuddles from all the staff there. As he is now in good health, he is ready to find a new home. This will need to be as the only cat with someone willing and able to give him lots of attention as he is so affectionate.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

‘Manners Maketh the Dog’ Imagine that you are playing in the local park with your two year old child, everything is fine, your little one is having a great time, playing safely and happily. Suddenly and out of nowhere, an older child, apparently alone, no parent in sight, appears, bowls over your toddler and takes away their precious toy? Or worse, an older child appears and starts to manhandle your child in a way that is simply not acceptable? It is unimaginable that anyone could consider this behaviour to be alright and yet, inexplicably, it is the sort of thing that unsupervised dogs are allowed to do all of the time. Sadly it’s a problem that seems to be on the rise. The lone dog or just the oblivious owner are so often now responsible for a recognisable decline in manners in dog walking and in dog etiquette. In my fifty years as a dog owner, my twenty years as a professional dog trainer I believe that we have hit a new low in doggy manners but, as ever, it is the owners and not the dogs that are responsible and yet it is a problem that is so avoidable. To exemplify what I mean, here is a case in point: Out walking our elderly, blind and deaf, Cocker Spaniel, only last week, we encountered a Husky and a Labrador fresh from revelling in a muddy, woodland pond. To describe them as boisterous would be an understatement, both dogs, both lovely animals, bounded up to us knocking our poor old boy to the ground then jumped up on my husband covering him in mud and pond water. It only took a sharp sit from me to bring them under control and we all patiently waited together for their owner to appear. A full three minutes later, around a corner, ear phones in, oblivious to the world and her dogs, a lady appeared. Against the

fully audible rhythms of her music I tried to explain what had happened and suggested that it was less than acceptable to allow her dogs to run free out of hearing, sight and mind. At first she didn’t even remove her ear phones, only when I requested that she remove them did she, somewhat grudgingly, haul them from her ears. Any hopes I held for an apology were very quickly dashed as she simply shrugged her shoulders and walked away, her dogs still on the loose. In fairness this incident was not the dogs fault. It was very apparent that they had neither been trained nor socialised but even more worryingly she clearly failed to understand the need for either. For her it was sufficient to shut out the world, retreat into her audio dimension and leave her dogs to do anything that they wanted.

This is not an isolated incident, we are all familiar the cry of ‘he’s friendly he only wants to play’ however, fun is not an excuse for inappropriate behaviour. The outcome in this circumstance was a frightened elderly Cocker, an amount of unforeseen laundry and some serious indignation but it could have been much worse: What if a fight between the dogs had resulted? What if a dog had been hurt or a person bitten? What if ‘dog rage’ had ensued? Dogs learn manners from socialisation just as our children do. A critical element of this is feedback to the dog or indeed the small child and the reinforcement of good behaviour. If your child misbehaves, you will soon let him or her know that is not good to continue in the same vein as there may be possible consequences to their

actions, consequences like the naughty step or removal of games privileges. Strangely, for some obscure reason, dog owners often miss or misunderstand this important point.

Here is an actual example: I often go for breakfast to a café that allows dogs. Last time I was there the people in the table next to me clearly struggled with a small, very noisy, dog that barked continuously. Each time the dog barked the owner reached down, stroked the dog and said ‘good girl‘ and in doing so, through ignorance, reinforced the bad behaviour ‘you bark I say good girl’. They certainly didn’t mean this outcome but regrettably they knew no better and so the dog continued to bark and everyone in the café struggled to enjoy their breakfast. One of the very first and one of the most crucial things we teach in puppy classes is how to give feedback to your dog. They need to know when you are pleased and equally when you are displeased. It’s not rocket science but this simple understanding can make a world of difference to how your dog behaves throughout its life, how it is perceived by others and it can make the owners life a whole lot easier too! ‘Manners taketh the dog.’ It is instilling those manners which is the owner’s and trainer’s responsibility.

Animal Magic Dog Club is a fun, family orientated community club catering for local dogs and dogs on holiday. Apart from offering a wide range of training for puppies and adult dogs, we also run regular social events. Norfolk born author, Keri Beevis, is no stranger to the North Norfolk coast and, although based in Norwich, she has visited many times over the years.

Therefore, when it came to choosing settings for her new psychological thriller, the first based in her home county, Cromer was always going to be on the list. Other locations featured include Burnham Overy Staithe, Cley next the Sea, Norwich and Filby.

The story follows a young woman, Lila, who is the only survivor of a car accident. She believes she is on the road to recovery after being released from the hospital, but a series of unsettling incidents leave her fearing for her safety. Does she have survivor’s guilt or is something more sinister at play?

Early reviewer feedback has been positive, with one reader calling the book ‘a beautifully written thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat,’ while another writes that ‘the whole novel reads like a love letter to * All makes Servicing * Norwich, and Cromer especially. Some of my Proton, Perodua and favourite childhood memories are of the North Norfolk coast,’ Keri tells us. ‘I love the area Nissan specialists and feel blessed to live in such a beautiful county. I just hope I have done it justice in my new book.’

Firms sentenced to ÂŁ108,257 following health and safety breach Sentencing follows successful prosecution of Woodland Caravan Site and Foley and Baugh Associates

Woodland Caravan Site has been ordered to pay fines, costs and a victim surcharge totalling ÂŁ103,120 and Foley and Baugh Associates has been ordered to pay a total of ÂŁ5137 after a swimmer was pulled unconscious from a swimming pool at the site in Trimingham in March 2017. Both firms pleaded guilty to failing to discharge their general health, safety and welfare duty at a hearing at Norwich Magistrates Court in March 2019 and were sentenced by District Judge Woollard at Chelmsford Magistrates Court on Friday 20 September 2019.

Woodlands Caravan Site (Trimingham) Ltd, the company which operated and managed the pool, was charged with breach of the duty it owed to do so in such a way as to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, that swimmers there were not

exposed to the risks of drowning between 12 March 2015 and 1 April 2017.

Alan Baugh, a safety consultant from Great Yarmouth, trading as Foley and Baugh Associates, provided health and safety consultancy and advice services to Woodlands Caravan Site (Trimingham) Ltd. He was charged with breach of the duty he owed to do so in such a way as to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, that swimmers at the pool were not exposed to the risks of drowning between 1 December 2015 and 1 April 2017. Both charges were breaches of duties under section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, contrary to section 33(1)(a) of that Act.

North Norfolk District Council prosecuted following an investigation into the incident where a swimmer got into difficulty and was under the water for more than five minutes before being rescued by other swimmers. The swimmer was hospitalised and has since made a good recovery.

NOR NORTH TH NORF NORFOLK OLK REMOVALS REMOVALS A AND ST STORAGE ORAGE L LTD TD : 01692 016 500 501

Cllr. Sarah BĂźtikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “I hope that this outcome demonstrates the importance of all businesses in ensuring the health and safety of their customers, especially in swimming pools where the risks are well known and the need for effective supervision is absolutely necessary. If businesses are using safety consultants they must ensure that they are receiving an adequate and suitable service from them, otherwise they may both face action if problems arise, as in this case.

“This prosecution should serve as a clear indication of how seriously North Norfolk District Council treats incidents where standards have not been met and that court action was the only option in this serious case. The outcome for the swimmer could have been very different had it not been for the commendable actions of the members of the public in the pool at the time, and those with responsibility for the health and safety for others need to be absolutely clear of what the consequences are if they do not comply with legislation. Free guidance on the management and operation of swimming pools is available on the Health and Safety Executive website.

Poem

The night is not the Ending of the day, It is tomorrow sleeping, Storing up energy to Light the sun. We hardly notice the The sound of day waking, The click of darkness Turning on the light.

The birds do, And begin to sing, And for miles around Alarm clocks ring. Chris Hargest
