Country’s biggest New Year’s Day Firework display celebrates 21 years All eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier on 1 January 2020 as the traditional New Year’s Day Firework display celebrates its 21st anniversary.
The event, which started as a one-off display for the new millennium in 2000, was funded by Cromer Town Council and was located on The Meadow - it was a success in terms of local support, and it raised a few hundred pounds for charity.

As always we would like to encourage those who can, to donate to the collectors around the town so that this event can continue to run and raise as much money as it can for the worthy causes in the area.”
Continued from front cover... Former Firework Committee Chairman Jim Bond said “This seemed to be an event that we could do every year, and the following year it attracted a larger crowd. After a few years, the display was moved onto the pier, thanks to North Norfolk District Council's support. It has gone on to attract larger and larger crowds, and consequently an increase in donations which helps pay for the following year's display and grants to local charities."
The event is free, however there will be bucket collectors out in force on the day to fundraise for the 2021 display. The bucket collection at the 2019 display raised over a fantastic £10,000. Half of this was given out in grants to local good causes and the balance has been used towards funding the 2019 display.
Since 2000 the event has given out grants totalling over £60,000 to local charities and good causes. Organisers hope as many people as possible will again come to Cromer for the day to see more than 3,000 firework shots light up the skies over the North Sea.
“Just a few coins can make a lot of difference to local charities and good causes – and without everyone’s help we couldn’t continue the annual display” said Pat West.
Firework Committee Chairman Pat West said “As always, the advice is please arrive early and support the local businesses in town who do support the Fireworks committee. There are several exciting new sequences within the main display which will be new to Cromer this year and we are very excited to show these to everyone. As last year, there will be a torchlight parade from Cromer church before the display. We have a new route and for those who have purchased official merchandise there is a designated area with a grandstand view of the firework display.
Organisers are still looking for volunteers to bolster their official bucket collectors team. Please contact Cromer town council for more information or register at Cromer museum on New Year’s Day from 2pm.
Prior to the fireworks there will be a fun run along Cromer Promenade at 3pm organised by North Norfolk Beach Runners. The one-mile fun run is the perfect opportunity to work off those New Year’s Eve excesses with a gentle jog or a five minute dash if you’re up to it! Starting from the pier forecourt, the run is open to all ages and abilities, with categories for under 13 year-olds, 14-16 year-olds, seniors, and even Fancy Dress. Registration will take place from 2.30pm for a fee of £1.
The annual display attracts more than 10,000 people into Cromer on New Year’s Day with many spending the day in the town for a breath of fresh air and something to eat and drink before the display is fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm.
Illuminated merchandise available to buy during the afternoon outside Cromer Museum (next to the Church). Mulled wine will again be served outside the museum, with tea, coffee, and hot soup available in the church from 2pm – 4.30pm. The torchlit procession will set off from Cromer Museum at 4.30 pm, for those who have purchased official torches, to a viewing position on slopes in front of the Hotel de Paris. Local cafés, pubs, shops and restaurants will also be open and other vendors are planning to ensure the crowds who descend on Cromer won’t go hungry.
Will Evans, Project Manager at Titanium Fireworks, said: “Titanium Fireworks are delighted to be firing again off Cromer pier on New Year’s Day 2020. This show is now a firm highlight in our calendar and the crowds it draws, and money it raises for the community, make it something special for us to play our part in. A local youngster will be leading the countdown as a thank you for the winning drawing she sent to the display organisers after the 2019 event and we will then start the main show and fill the skies above Cromer with an array of effects to
Visitors are urged to arrive in Cromer as early as possible on New Year’s Day. All three town car parks will be open. Runton Road car park will be charging a fixed charge of £5 per car for all day parking from 2pm on the day. Normal car park fees will apply on all other car parks. Additional car parking will be publicised in advance of the event. There will be no parking available on Cromer Promenade on New Year’s Day.

thanked us profusely and commented that the unit should be ready for use next year which is wonderful news.
His month’s meeting being our cream tea, the committee worked hard to decorate the hall for Halloween with spiders, cobwebs, special table cloths and even a raven and a couple of black cats! Jackie and Chris dressed up as witches though no-one seemed particularly scared!
The cream tea was thoroughly enjoyed. Once again the Old Rock Shop Bistro had excelled itself with the quality of the scones, jam and clotted cream, all excellent, proved by the fact that there weren't many left!
Shirley Davies and her colleague (apologies that I omitted to ask her name!) came to represent the Friends of Cromer Hospital. Jackie explained that thanks to a stall she and Chris ran at Trimingham Trosh there was a further £100 to be added to our original cheque. We are therefore thrilled to be able to donate £600 towards kitting out the new cancer unit. Shirley
Our fundraising for the hospital will continue until the end of the financial year in March with the collection box a constant presence at our meetings. The meeting was full of fun and laughter and Jackie's beautiful table decorations were raffled at the end.

A big thank you to everyone who has donated yarn, material, patterns and needles to Sheringham and Cromer Public Libraries to be used by Norfolk Knitters and Stitchers.
We use the yarn and material to make items for local charities including Kelling Hospital. Age UK, local residential and care homes, N and N Hospital, the Salvation Army, animal charities and the homeless as well as supporting people in need further afield.
Items we cannot use are sold on EBay to raise money for the proposed Chemo Ward at Cromer Hospital. So far we have given them £6000 with another £2000 in the pipeline. Other items are passed on to local charity shops and the Big C at Wymondham.

StART Concert
Royal Air Force Bircham Newton Heritage Centre
The third and final concert in the StART 2019 season is the outstanding pianist Margalida Moll Salord who will perform at the parish church of St Andrew the Apostle, Holt, Norfolk, NR25 6EZ on Saturday 9 November at 6.30pm.
The Heritage Centre at Bircham Newton has a unique collection of memorabilia from the former Royal Air Force station’s past service, which spanned more than 44 years, including two world wars and the Cold War. On display are photographs and personal memories of servicemen who served there and other related items from its fascinating history. The Centre is manned and run entirely by volunteers, many of whom are ex-servicemen. Close by there are two stone memorials to remember those who served at Bircham Newton and its main satellite airfield near Docking. Tony Nelson will be exhibiting his Model Airforce on both of our last open days this year - October 27th and Remembrance Sunday 10th November. Opening times are from 10am to 4pm. Entrance is FREE. Cromer WI
Cromer WI had a very enjoyable meeting on 10 October. Forty six members and one visitor heard an excellent talk illustrated with slides from Alistair Murphy who is the curator of Cromer Museum on the subject of Olive Edis.
Olive was born in 1876 and died in 1955 - her ashes are interred in Sheringham Cemetery. Her first studio was purpose built in Church Street Sheringham with a glass roof to let in natural daylight. Olive took her first autochrome portrait in 1912 and later patented a device for viewing autochromes which allowed them to be backlit. During 1918 and 1919 Olive was appointed an official war artist and photographed the battlefields of France and Flanders for the Imperial War Museum. Throughout her career Olive photographed many influential figures of early 20th century society as well as local fishermen and their families in Cromer and Sheringham. In 2008 Cromer Museum acquired a collection of over 2000 images of Olives work and holds the largest collection of her work anywhere in the world. Cromer museum shuts at the end of October for winter, when it opens again next spring do go and see their collection as it is well worth a visit. A truly remarkable lady during what was still mainly a man’s world.
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
On Tuesday 1 October, after a superb lunch, Sue and Guy Morton gave a fascinating talk called ‘Bell Ringing in Norfolk’.
Sue explained that bell ringing was an English tradition. At St Peter Mancroft in Norwich in 1731, the Bloody Peal (so-called because bell ringers had blood on their hands at the end) was rung by 8 people over 8 hours and 15 minutes. This was a record for 151 years!
Sue and Guy met through bell ringing and decided to pursue their mutual interest at All Saints Church, Upper Sheringham. A bell hanger’s report on the six bells, which had been cast in 1841, stated that they were in a bad condition. The parochial church council asked Sue to co-ordinate a major fundraising project to re-hang the derelict bells to enable traditional English full-circle bell ringing to take place again (the bells have not been rung in this way since 1935). A chiming mechanism is also to be installed to ensure the bells can be sounded even when there are no experienced bell ringers available. So far £73,000 has been raised, another £12,000 is needed.
Houghton Hall was the destination of a day out in September to see the Henry Moore exhibition as well as enjoying the pleasant autumn weather in the gardens.
Our competition was Halloween. Carol Denton was first with a child’s Halloween costume, second was Brenda Boyd with ceramic pumpkins and third was Rosie Evans with a Halloween ghost and friend’s arrangement.
Six ladies with October birthdays received posies made by Jill Betz. November’s meeting is on Thursday 14th at 2pm and is our annual meeting. We meet in the community hall and visitors are always welcome.

We all know how stressful the firework season can be for our pets so here at Toll Barn Vets we have a few helpful tips to help keep pets as calm as possible. Animals have very sensitive hearing and loud bangs can be painful whilst the flashing lights can be scary.

be started at least 48 hours (preferably longer) before fireworks are due to start. Noise phobia CDs are also available and are designed to gradually reduce sensitivity to loud sounds over a long period of time in the run up to Firework Night.
It’s also important to remember small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as birds during this stressful season. These pets can also get easily scared and if possible these pets should be moved into a quiet room or shed. If this is not possible cages should be covered to reduce the sound of the fireworks and turned to face a wall so the firework lights are less visible. It is essential to ensure enough ventilation still remains underneath the cover. Make sure pets have enough bedding to burrow and hide in should they feel stressed.

Local choir to perform East Anglian premiere of new Requiem
Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society’s 2019-20 season begins at 7pm on Saturday 23 November in St Peter’s Church Sheringham with Songs Ancient & Modern, a lovely blend of old and new music including popular works by Mozart, Haydn and Fauré. The programme also includes the East Anglian premiere of an exciting new Requiem by Dorset composer, Matthew Coleridge who comments "Requiem is my first major composition and most frequently performed work. Far from being inspired by, or in memory of, a lost loved one, I wrote the majority of it in the months following the birth of my son. I hope this brings an optimistic, affirming and uplifting mood to the music. I was determined to avoid any clichés of angelic harps or fires of hell, and chose to take a more human and earthly approach - something more akin to the Requiems of the middle ages and Renaissance.
Much of the writing is in the manner of Gregorian chant, with numerous melodic ‘threads’ woven together into a rich tapestry of sound. The solo cello became a vital part of the music from some of the earliest drafts, providing a counterpoint of light against dark.

The reception marks the commencement of a series of school and community events including tree-planting sessions taking place across the district with the aim of raising funds for Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s ‘Sure Start’ centres which focus on educating children and encouraging them to get in touch with nature.
North Norfolk District Council recently hosted a fun-filled civic reception in the spectacular location of Cley Visitor Centre.
The fund-raising event was a huge success raising £2245 for the Chairman’s chosen charity of the year – Norfolk Wildlife Trust. During the evening an auction was held with some unusual lots, such as unique experiences including a ride in a Tiger Moth at Langham Airfield and pieces of art.
Sure Start centres are part of Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Children and Nature initiative. It creates wildlife-friendly areas outdoors where children can get involved with nature through wild walks and educational sessions.
Cllr Clive Stockton, North Norfolk District Council’s Chairman, said “I am absolutely overjoyed that the evening was informal, relaxed, with some 70 persons present and the auction itself raised such an exceptional amount.
The auction was carried out free of charge and therefore the total raised has been donated to my chosen charity. This will contribute to two strands of work being carried out by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust – the “Children and Nature” project and heritage grazing programme.
The auction was only possible because of the most generous support of the 22 donors who gave such fantastic lots and I would like to extend

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
A recent departure from our pens was Gracie, another cat very popular with everyone who has been in contact with her. To see Gracie now, as opposed to when she joined us is remarkable. Initially, we thought she was a very old cat as she was very thin and in terrible condition. With lots of loving care her health and condition improved and she did leave for a new home which unfortunately proved unsuitable as she intimidated the resident old dog. We believe she was probably trying to be friendly but obviously the dog did not. However, she has now settled in a new home as the only pet and is enjoying the love and care she is receiving from her new family, who are delighted with her. This tiny little cat did not have a good life before joining us but is now reaping the much-deserved benefits of a very loving home.
Being confined in a cat pen is not the normal environment for a cat and although some cats will settle quite happily, especially if they have arrived from a stressful situation, others will find it challenging and will not be seen at their best. It is therefore important to remember that the cat may behave differently when it goes to its new home and does need time to adapt to its new surroundings. We usually advise that the cat is initially confined to one room and gradually introduced to other rooms as its confidence improves. In the first few weeks it is also important to ensure that, until the cat is properly settled, all windows should be kept closed and the cat’s whereabouts monitored before opening doors. Because cats can be unpredictable, we do on occasion rehome a cat that will decide it has” landed on its paws” on leaving its carrier and will explore the whole of its new home and settle down, once its inspection is complete, on a nice comfy chair or settee. Whether they settle straight away, or need time to do so, it is important to let the cat do it at its own pace rather than try to force the issue.

Hedgehog Haven
I have hedgehogs come in from many different locations but I was rather surprised when I received a call from Corks Funeral Directors! They had found a small hedgehog in the back garden. This little fellow only weighs 100grms and would not have survived much longer outside. What else could I call him but Corky!

It’s Full Autumn out there and that can only mean one thing: the return of possibly the best United Kingdom bread and butter pudding in the European Union (as you read this there may not be time for anyone to prove otherwise!)
The secret ingredient is Ann Graveling’s Silver Medal World Championship-winning marmalade, with which residents of Overstrand Road are very familiar thanks to the burgeoning roadside marmalade pit-stop outside No97. In fact people have driven for hundreds of miles for this very spread and, if it’s all gone, disgruntled shoppers have been known to lay siege to the front door demanding replenishments.
Overstrand Road is often brought to a complete standstill due to impatient marmalade-hunters, and although Ann cleverly shifted the blame for recent congestion onto Anglian Water we all know the real story.
Arguably the best way to try this legendary marmalade is within Reis’s equally legendary bread and butter pudding – available on the menu every night, 6-9pm – 01263 512412 to book your table!
Bread and Butter Pudding
Ingredients: 1 x 800g loaf of brioche (two if not using croissants) 3 x croissants (helps if not absolutely fresh) 200g white chocolate 4 eggs (whole) 2 oranges (zest) 350ml cream 100ml milk 100g caster sugar Small jar of Silver Medal-winning marmalade (available from 97 Overstrand Road) 150g cranberries (dried)
Method Line a 32cm brownie tray with baking paper
Slice the brioche into slices approximately ½ cm thick
Melt your white chocolate
Place layers of brioche in the bottom of the tray, overlapping slightly
Add a reasonable amount of marmalade, cranberries and chocolate over the brioche
Thinly cut your croissants and follow the same process as above, alternating croissants / brioche, until full

In a bowl, whisk your caster sugar, eggs, milk, cream and orange zest until mixed sufficiently
Add the mixture to your tray in drips and drabs until it had all soaked in and leave overnight in the fridge
Preheat oven to 160dc, 320df, gas mark 3
Cover with baking paper, then tin foil, bake for 45 minutes on middle shelf, remove tin foil and paper and return to oven for a further fifteen minutes or until golden brown and risen.

The speaker at our October meeting was Richard Clark and his topic was ‘Hardy Exotics’.
Richard and his wife set up Panache Plants two years ago and have concentrated on growing and selling hardy exotic varieties such as hedychiums, eucomis, dahlias and “big leafy monsters” such as bamboos, bananas and palms.
It is wrong to think of these types of plant as being too tender for our North Norfolk climate as a glance at many gardens in the town
will testify.
Most will tolerate temperatures as low as minus 15 without any trouble so most varieties are suitable for this area.
If the position is right and the plants or bulbs are planted deep enough then there should be no problems.
Hedychiums are very showy and ornamental, are heavily scented and some varieties will grow up to eight foot tall. They have a very distinctive scent of ginger.
There are over 150 varieties of eucomis. Many of these are pineapple scented. They will tolerate dry conditions and for this reason are suited to containers.
In addition some varieties are good as cut flowers. Dahlias will not do well in containers generally but are better suited to borders and as long as they are well mulched will overwinter with few problems.
Palms, clump forming bamboos and tree ferns should do well as will bananas, although you will have to wait up to six years to get any fruit and they will be very small but edible.

Richard had brought along with him a wide selection of plants and many members took advantage of this to stock up before winter arrives.

Pleasaunce Work Party Day

Sheringham and District Philatelic Society discovered some surprising aspects of Austria on Monday 15 October.
Come for half a day, whole day or even an hour. Work period from 10am – 1pm with soup and rolls provided at 1pm and then from 1.45pm – 4pm.
Mike Clarke, one of our members, showed part of a collection started by his father which he had extended. Before stamps were issued in 1850 letters were carried throughout an extensive European empire and beyond – examples of such letters have remarkable handwriting.
Later, Austria shrank into a small, landlocked republic, but the postal service was keen for business. The Danube Steam Navigation Company carried mail. On the railways the number of the mail train was included in the cancelling mark on the envelope.
Balloon postcards and an annual stamp day with special issues also generated income. Inflation between 1921 and 1924 saw the cost of sending a postcard rise 14 000%. A 1933 design was produced in triplicate – a set for each of the official languages. The impact of war featured in the display including censored and prisoner of war mail.

The Importance of Fraud and Scam Awareness
With the winter months drawing near it can be a difficult time for our more vulnerable loved ones and can unfortunately make them targets to fraudulent individuals. That is why Home Instead Senior Care Norwich and Clapham and Collinge solicitors recently teamed up to offer a free Scam Prevention Workshop for older people, family members, carers and people throughout the community.
The workshop held on the 23rd September offered advice and guidance in supporting your loved ones to help them feel safe and secure in their own home. As the home is no longer only targeted by doorstep sales-people and cold callers but also nuisance calls, texts and unwanted post it is important that we take steps to prevent this invasion of privacy and security.
Citizens Advice research shows that almost three-quarters (72%) of people surveyed had been targeted by scammers over a two year period. Over a third, had been targeted five or more times. Council provides training for local businesses North Norfolk District Council made a successful application for a Local Investment in Future Talent (LIFT) grant towards the cost of skills training workshops for people employed in small businesses in the tourism and hospitality sector such as bed and breakfast establishments, cafes, restaurants and leisure activities.
The council surveyed members of Visit North Norfolk to find out what training was needed and the best time to hold the workshops. Customer Service was indicated as the highest priority, followed by digital media skills and marketing. As a result from this response from local businesses, the Council have gone on to

offer such workshops which will be held in venues across the District from November 2019 to February 2020.
There will be a full day Customer Service workshop, delivered by the Welcome to Excellence initiative, the most successful accredited customer service training in the UK. Additionally, there will be half day Digital Media and Marketing workshops with introductory and advanced options to ensure that businesses have the best opportunity to develop new skills or hone existing ones.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was assaulted in Cromer in the early hours of Wednesday morning 9 October.
Monies will be split between the equipment fund for the new North Norfolk Macmillan Centre and Macmillan.
The incident happened at about 12.20am on the High Street when the victim, a man in his 40s, was punched, causing him to fall floor where he was kicked, suffering a split lip which required stiches.

Macmillan Coffee Morning and Walk
Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk Committee, in conjunction with SiS, recently held their annual Coffee Morning and Walk at St Peters Church Hall Sheringham.
Fifty three walkers took part, with Kathy Lee and Linda Alder raising much appreciated additional money from sponsors. The whole event was a tremendous success breaking all records and raising a fantastic total of £1265.95.
This year the event was supported by Ro Curtis with the New Sheringham Singers who entertained the walkers and visitors to the coffee morning with some superb singing. Thank you to everyone who contributed in so many ways, and this wonderful community for being so generous!
St Peters Church PCC were very kind in donating the use of the hall to Macmillan. The money raised is ring fenced by Macmillan Cancer Support to help local people in North Norfolk with cancer and their families. Thank you everyone!
Sporting Centre of Excellence
Olympian Gail Emms encourages young people to take up sport
North Norfolk District Council launched Year Four of its Sporting Centre of Excellence initiative, hosting an evening of speakers including Badminton Olympic medallist Gail Emms at Gresham’s School, Holt.
The aim of the initiative is to encourage children with a talent for sport to get involved and to take advantage of specialist coaching provided and the excellent facilities at Gresham’s School.
Now entering its fourth year, the sessions have produced many sporting achievers, including three winners at the County Championships and 11 children selected for the Norfolk Schools Athletics Association, amongst many others.

Emms gave a moving speech and later said of the event “I was so thrilled to be able to speak to these children and their families about the joys of getting involved in sport. Not only is it important to be physically active for our health, but it’s exciting that those with real talent can progress and succeed if they want to.”
Marc Bradford, whose daughter is currently taking part in the programme, said “My daughter has been attending the endurance running training due to an invitation after her achievements over the last year in numerous school and district competitions. We found the all the speakers entertaining, interesting, inspirational and relatable and left the evening with a broad smile and thinking about how lucky we are to have the chance to receive such top level training. A massive thank you from both of us, to all of you who have been involved in setting up this training program and for hosting such an insightful evening”.

CROMER POOR LANDS TRUST Cromer Poor Lands Trust has set up a scheme to assist Cromer residents who are in need, hardship or distress, to purchase a new electrical item, school uniform, a bicycle, tank of heating oil etc. The West Norwich Credit Union will offer the applicant a low-cost loan of up to £500 to cover the purchase price with a repayment term to suit the applicant. If the application is approved, once half the loan has been paid off, Cromer Poor Lands Trust will step in and pay the remaining balance. TOWN COUNCIL AND COMMITTEE MEETINGS: The full schedule of meeting dates for 2019 can be found on the Town Council website and noticeboards. CEREMONIES AT NORTH LODGE We are currently receiving lots of booking for ceremonies for late 2019 and 2020. Ceremonies can be held in our newly decorated chamber or in the clifftop garden. Further information can be found on the Town Council website and our facebook page @WeddingsinCromer . We can also host Renewal of Vows and Naming Ceremonies. If you would like to visit our venue please give us a call to arrange an appointment.
CROMER CEMETERY Regular inspections are on-going and any unauthorised items will be removed and securely stored to await collection. The next inspection will take place in October. Please be reminded that breakable items and those which emit light, sound or movement are not permitted in the cemetery. Full rules and regulations are displayed on the Town Council website and are available on request from the Town Council Office.
CROMER NEW YEAR’S DAY FIREWORKS Preparations are underway for the 2020 event and we are again asking for the help of volunteers with the bucket collection. If you would like to help please contact the Deputy Town Clerk. New collectors will be asked to provide valid ID.
COMMUNITY PROJECT We are looking for volunteers to help make flowers for a forthcoming community event. The flower making sessions will be held at Sticky Earth Café every Tuesday morning. Please contact the Town Clerk for full details.

Staff did a wonderful job walking 26 miles on their treadmill in store and raising over £350 for the charity About with Friends.

Garden Therapy at Canaan Christian Centre
The Canaan Christian Centre situated at 21 Holt Road, Sheringham is offering help to anyone who would like some garden therapy.
We are told that something in our DNA responds to nature but not everyone has a garden or a space to try out gardening.

We hope to have a gardening expert with us too who can advise us. Sessions will be on Friday mornings from 10am - 12noon with a break for coffee. Free.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club News from the Club House ...
The AGM went ahead with over 20 members attending. All were agreed with the President that we had had a good season with two league successes, a cup runner-up and several excellent friendly visits by touring teams and local clubs. Everyone who had contributed to the season was praised for their efforts. There are three officer vacancies to be filled during the close season.
The green has closed, repair work has been done and already it is looking in a much better condition. Ready for 2020! Members are very welcome to enjoy our clubhouse facilities during the winter. We meet for
a (very!) short mat bowls session every Wednesday afternoon at 1.45pm and meet every Friday evening from 7pm.
A coffee morning will be held on Saturday 7 December from 10am. Members, old and new, are welcome. If you are tempted to play next year, come and have a chat in our friendly atmosphere.
Anyone is welcome to come to the clubhouse on Thursday afternoon, 7 November, from 1pm to 4pm to peruse and buy a second-hand book, DVD and CD or two. Visit John on the Runton Road. Donations will also be gratefully accepted.

OLIVER TOPPLES THE CHAMP TO WIN HIS FIRST TITLE Back in 1981 Cromer Squash Club’s annual club tournament was held for the first time when an up and coming young Roy Simpson became the club’s first champion. Apart from a four year ‘low; period around the turn of the millennium the tournament has been held every year since, Simpson has long since retired and on Friday evening another young player, Alex Oliver, became the 20th different player to pick up the prestigious trophy as he defeated the reigning champion, Matthew Jordan 9-6 9-1 8-10 10-8 in the final.
Oliver was runner-up two years ago and this year he was seeded to go one better, with last year’s champion, Matthew Jordan seeded at No.2 and the seeding committee were proved right as these two players contested a well fought final. The younger Oliver had had an easier passage to the final whereas Jordan had to battle hard to shake off the challenge of the four times former champion, John Baker in the semi-final before coming out on top 3-1.
The tournament was played under the conventional scoring system which meant that players could only score points off their own serve and in a cagey first game Oliver just had the edge coming out on top 9-6. The second

back by taking the third game 10-8 and had chances to draw level in the fourth before Oliver edged the game 10-8 to win the match 3-1 and clinch his first title.
To reach the final Oliver defeated the veteran John Chandler in the semi-final having been taken to four games in his quarter final by the 2013 beaten finalist Alan Harper while before beating Baker in his semi-final Jordan had another 3-1 victory over Sean Moore.
Cromer’s Technical Director, Barry Starling, who made an early exit from the tournament as he lost in the first round to Alan Harper was among the large crowd who watched the final from the balcony and said afterwards “This was a very good match and the 3-1 scoreline probably doesn’t do it justice. Jordy fought back well to take the third game and if he had been able to win the fourth the scores would have been level and then anything could have happened.”
When Jordan won the title last year he fought his way back from 0-2 down in the final and this year it looked as though he might once again come from behind. He pulled a game
