Friends of Cromer Museum

The second speaker in our current season of talks was Nigel Lloyd who is a trustee of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust. The aim of the trust is to re-open the whole length of the canal and the talk covered not only the history of the canal but also the work of the trust today.

Work started on the canal in 1825 and the aim was to connect the mills on the canal to the River Ant thereby allowing access to Great Yarmouth via the River Bure.

Wherries were used to transport goods in both directions. Hopes that the coal trade would provide the main source of income did not materialise and it was mainly agricultural produce that was carried. Tonnage rates varied depending on the cargo. Wines and spirits were the most expensive items to transport. At its height the canal carried over 12,000 tons of cargo a year.

Cromer RNLI was asked to launch both lifeboats on 24 October to reports of a person in the water off the pier.

They were asked to conduct a search in Photo: Paul Russell the vicinity of the pier and surrounds.

Cromerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s relief all weather lifeboat â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;RNLB Peter and Lesley-Jane Nicholsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and inshore D class â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;George and Murielâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; were soon at the scene.

The coming of the railways to the area in the 1870s and 1880s saw a reduction in canal traffic but the canal was in use until 1934 when the motor powered wherry â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ella IIâ&#x20AC;? carried the last cargo of barley down to Great Yarmouth. The canal had been a tourist attraction since the 1870s.

Five wherries were fitted out to take tourists and for an extra 15 shillings a week it was possible to have a piano on board. The canal became such a tourist attraction that canal watchers were given their own name â&#x20AC;&#x201C; gongooziers would you believe!

After a thorough search, nothing was found and both boats were stood down and returned to their respective boathouses.

By the 1950s the canal was used very little and large sections were drained or simply silted up. The canal trust is focusing on opening up the upper section of the canal.

Restoration work between Antingham and Ebridge Lock is ongoing and 30,000 bricks A wherry using the canal in the 19th century have been used to reinstate Bacton Lock. European Union money has helped to restore the gates at Ebridge Lock. The trust has equipment to help maintain the sections already cleared but more money and above all volunteers are needed to keep the work going. Anyone interested in the work of the canal can take a boat trip from Ebridge Mill every Sunday at 2 pm to see what progress has been made. The cost is ÂŁ5.

Sheringham and District Philatelic Society

Sheringham and District Philatelic Society discovered some surprising aspects of Austria on Monday 15 October.

Mike Clarke, one of our members, showed part of a collection started by his father which he had extended. Before stamps were issued in 1850 letters were carried throughout an extensive European empire and beyond â&#x20AC;&#x201C; examples of such letters have remarkable handwriting. Later, Austria shrank into a small, landlocked republic, but the postal service was keen for business. The Danube Steam Navigation Company carried mail. On the railways the number of the mail train was included in the cancelling mark on the envelope. Balloon postcards and an annual stamp day with special issues also generated income. Inflation between 1921 and 1924 saw the cost of sending a postcard rise 14 000%. A 1933 design was produced in triplicate â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a set for each of the official languages. The impact of war featured in the display including censored and prisoner of war mail. Members warmly thanked Mike for his interesting talk and for answering questions.

Revised Plans for Holt Railway Station

Back in 2015 a group was established at the request of the Board to examine how the Holt site should be developed to complete the original vision of a country goods yard first planned way back in 2004.

The design was presented to the Feb 2017 Members’ Forum at The Links and was well received; however, the price tag was expected to be in the region of £3m or so including all the surrounding street works.

Back then there was a realistic prospect of obtaining a majority grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund given its museum and educational purpose. However, all that changed in 2018 when the HLF changed their policy on grants and ceased to make large sums available. This led the Board to reappraise what we can do and at the meeting in September they approved a ‘bronze’ scheme for Holt rather than the original ‘gold’ scheme.

So, what exactly is ‘bronze’? It is a scheme that delivers virtually the same output for visitors as the original big scheme but not inside a large B&Q style shed, so it can be built incrementally as funds are available.

The original scheme would have required a significant lump of cash even to erect the

basic building as there are many competing demands on the railway’s finances!

The first part will be arrival of Reedham Jn signal box in late February. This is still subject to confirming planning permission with NNDC, but we aren’t expecting any push back as discussions first took place 2 years ago (but we must never assume anything until we have it writing!). The top half will arrive, be repaired and then be erected onto a new concrete foundation.

Eventually it will become a “have a go” simulator where visitors can try their hand at signalling. This will then be joined by a range of other buildings and we are scouring the county for abandoned pw huts that we could dismantle and move to Holt and re-erect next to the box. So, over a period of time the yard area will be filled by a range of buildings that allows us to demonstrate all the aspects of railway working. There will need to be a new buffet building and replacement for the institute and the railway cottage will move down from the gate. (This in turn will eventually allow the buffer stops of the headshunt to be pushed back towards to road to give us a longer platform 2).Regrettably this has meant that we have not been able to renew the model engineer’s lease that falls due in January and they have to find a new home.

We are also planning to build a superior children’s play area in 2020 between the

turntable and the goods shed.

And finally, the turntable – the Board took the decision to decline the offer from another railway to buy it and are looking at installation in the corner of the field behind the water tower subject to a land agreement. This is very much work in progress but is at least moving ahead at last.

The generosity of a Norfolk farmer is set to improve health services in North Norfolk after Cromer Hospital received one of its biggest ever donations.

The family of Douglas de Bootman have presented a cheque of more than £1m to the N&N Hospitals Charity after the retired farmer left the proceeds of his estate to Cromer Hospital in his will. Mr de Bootman spent his life farming at Pentney, near Swaffham, before retiring and buying Church Farm in Thursford with his wife Janet. After Janet died of cancer in 2010, Mr de Bootman continDouglas de Bootman ued to live in Thursford and spent much of his time looking after the grounds of his farm and discovered his love of painting.

The 88-year-old died in March 2018 following a short illness. His niece Karen Ballard, from King’s Lynn, said her uncle liked helping others and Mr de Bootman revealed to her a week before his death that he was leaving his legacy to benefit Cromer Hospital.

“He was very active in his retirement up until three or four weeks before he died. He had quite a lot of land and used to get up early in the mornings and spent his time taking care of the grounds: cutting the grass, pruning the trees, chopping wood etc. He was very skilled at carpentry, welding, and agricultural engineering. He loved being outside with his Labrador and in his retirement took up painting, which it seems he had a natural skill.”

“He was such a quiet, sensitive gentleman. He and Janet Cancer manager Matt Keeling, Sister in Law enjoyed a few holidays in Scotland. My uncle liked a Pat De Bootman, Niece Karen Ballard and quiet life, in Thursford he had a few elderly neighbours Matron Anita Martins who he liked to help and vice versa. “We are happy that the money is going to the new cancer unit at Cromer Hospital as cancer affects so many people in many ways.”

The sale of Mr de Bootman’s estate has resulted in Cromer Hospital receiving £1,078,519.30.

The Trust is currently working with Macmillan Cancer Support to create a state-of-the-art cancer care and support centre, which will increase chemotherapy and treatment space at Cromer Hospital.

Louise Cook, Head of Fundraising for the N&N Hospitals Charity, said: “We are overwhelmed by this incredibly generous donation, which will make a significant difference to thousands of patients in North Norfolk. “Mr de Bootman’s legacy will undoubtedly help improve the facilities and services at the hospital and will be felt by patients, staff and visitors for many years to come.”

“No, neither do I”, says Emma Dale who is organising the ceilidh for the Friends of North Lodge Park, “but there will be an expert on hand to help us through the do-si-dos, baskets and reels”. This ceilidh, or barn dance will be led by an expert in Scottish reels and a dab hand at leading people through the dances.

There’s no better way to enjoy time with your friends and family than by spending a night dancing away together. This event will be a lot of fun and is definitely not one to be missed.

All are welcome to this fun event on Friday 15 November at 7pm in the Parish Hall, Cromer. All the dances will be taught and nothing is compulsory (except having fun). “We’ll pause half way through the evening to allow people to catch their breath and talk about how well they are doing over a two course supper”, Emma adds, “it’s all in aid of the project to replace the inaccessible bridge in the park with a new playful connection, so even if you can’t dance come along and join the fun for a good cause.”

The Outcome of 4by6 Secret Postcard Auction

Between 18 and 20 October Thorpe Market Church held a successful fundraising exhibition and auction of postcard-sized original artwork, donated by professional and amateur artists from across Norfolk and beyond.

A number of valuable artworks were donated including a handful of work by budding artists from Happisburgh School.

With thanks to the generosity of all the artists submitting, we raised a total amount of £1125.80 towards the cost of new exhibition facilities for the church. A fantastic achievement!

We would also like to thank the many volunteers who helped hang the exhibition, bake cakes and invigilate over the three days. Much fun was had by all those who took part, bidding on multiple items or outbidding each other for firm favourites.

We still have lots of beautiful postcards remaining so have decided to exhibit them during our popular Snowdrop Sunday events in February 2020 for a flat rate to purchase on the day and take home. We would welcome NEW postcard submissions from artists who wish to take part for the February 2020 exhibition. The same terms apply, as long as the artwork is 6by4 inches we accept any 2 or 3 dimensional medium and any theme, whether it is figurative, abstract or conceptual. Sculptural pieces can be exhibited on plinths.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS will be 31 January 2020.

Medieval Marriage

‘The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there’; so said L P Hartley as the opening lines of his novel ‘The Go-Between’.

I recently heard a presentation which included a run-through of English marriage and divorce laws through the ages. It amused me; and thought it might amuse you. It is truly alien territory.

In the early 7th century, under the code of Ethelbert, the legal penalty, if a man ‘took a maiden by force’, was that he had to pay her guardian (not her) 50 shillings (i.e. £2.50 in decimal money), and afterwards he could buy from the guardian his consent to marry her.

Presumably the former-maiden’s value would have been much diminished and it would have been an easy solution for the men. The cost of consent would be 20 shillings (£1) if she was betrothed to another man. We do not know the cost if she wasn’t betrothed. There was a 35 shilling (£1.75) refund if the woman was ‘returned’.

The Welsh laws of the same era stated that the grounds for divorce were leprosy, impotence and bad breath (only one of the three was necessary). There was recognition too of the ‘seven year itch’. On divorce after seven years the money in the marriage was split equally.

Sheringham Little Theatre has been staging its own in-house professional pantos for a decade.

And to celebrate, Nick Earnshaw, the man who has directed five of them, is putting on his frock and make-up in a return to the stage as the dame - as well as being director and writer – for the ‘Dick Whittington and His Cat’ show from 7th December to 1st January.

Nick was ugly sister Pearl in Cinderella back in 2009 and has since made Sheringham his second home with regular involvement in the venue’s panto and summer seasons, as actor and director.

“I am really excited and it’s a dream come true to be dame here,” said he 37-year-old self-confessed panto addict who has previously played the Sarah role at Sheffield.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Among the recent departures from our care was a young cat called Olga. Although she arrived at 6 weeks old, the ideal age for kittens from outside situations to come into care, she had taken a long time to adjust and to learn to trust us. When her new owners contacted us offering to give her a home, we explained that she was still very timid with strangers and although we knew that she would be happy in a home eventually, it would take time and patience for this to happen.

Fortunately, they were prepared to let her take all the time she needed to adjust even before they went to see her. Asked for advice as to the best way to introduce her to their home her carer suggested that when Olga arrived, they should confine her to one room with her litter tray, food and water and gradually introduce her to the rest of the house.

Unfortunately, the door to the room was left open by mistake so Olga was able to get into the other rooms and went into hiding. Although it took a little time for them to locate her, her new family were not concerned by this set back and just moved everything into the room in which she was hiding. Having set up cameras in their home they knew that she was coming out as soon as they went to bed, to eat and use her litter tray. They were even aware that she visited their bedroom during the night. Within a very short time we received good news in the form of a video of this dear little cat, sitting on a chair, looking around her new home and also doing a spot of grooming. Although still not a lap cat she will now climb over her new owners’ laps and also sleeps under their bed. Her new family are very happy with their new companion and we are very pleased that they were patient and let her decide when she was ready to trust them. One very good result and one happy little cat.

We are keeping in touch with Bassanio’s new family Peggy, one of the older kittens at present in and are hoping that the care results of the latest tests will identify the problem and the treatment needed to resolve it.

Hedgehog Haven

Another recent departure from our care, a little cat we called Bassanio, has had health problems since leaving us. He was one of the kittens that came in with cat flu and then had an ulcer appear on his tongue while in care. This had cleared up before he left us but, unfortunately, another

On Monday 14 October baby hoglet Thimble arrived at only 20 gms, less than 2 weeks old with eyes still closed. I had to start by syringe feeding him approximately every two to three hours.

Now, two weeks on, his eyes are open and his teeth are coming through so he now has one feed in the morning and one at night. It is much too late for hoglets being born so he is a very lucky hoglet to be found.

Star comedy writer behind stage “radio” show

Classic comedy is being re-tuned to raise funds for Sheringham Little Theatre.

Radio Fun is a revue show of sketches, songs, “awful jokes and daft poems” done in the style of a live broadcast BBC radio show.

It is penned by a double act of renowned television writers, one of whom now lives in north Norfolk, who have created comic lines for stars ranging from Russ Abbott and Kenny Everett to Cannon and Ball and Frankie Howerd.

Paul Minett, from Aylsham, and Brian Leveson from Edgware met as advertising colleagues in London. They wrote comedy sketches for charity events as a hobby in the 1980s, before it became their profession.

Paul explained: “When I worked at EMI records my boss knew we wrote for fun and asked us to write the lyrics for a comedy mother in law song for Les Dawson, which never happened, but we did do a rock and roll one for Russ Abbot in 1981.”

That led to writing sketches too – for acts including The Two Ronnies, Brian Conley and Bobby Davro, as well as TV sitcoms such as Up Pompeii, and My Family and screenplays for films including The Booze Cruise which starred Martin Clunes.

He added: “When I moved to Norfolk four years ago I wanted to get involved in amateur dramatics, having done it for 30 years in Kent, so I played dad Arthur in the Winslow Boy at Sheringham Little Theatre this year.

“Brian and I had already written our Radio Fun review show for charity in Orpington – so when there was talk of a show for the Little Theatre, we thought this would be ideal,” said Paul.

The show, featuring music, sound effects and audience interaction, will be performed by a 16-strong cast from the Little Theatre Players, on 14 – 16 November at 7.30pm nightly.

First up was Gill Breeze who did exceptionally well as she had only moved house three days previously. Her arrangement was in a basket with lots of garden greenery with red, orange and yellow gerberas, roses, alstoemerias, pom pom dahlias and in contrast purple chrysanthemums. Then Christine Warsop produced a wastepaper basket and put an ice cream sundae on the top. The ice cream was represented by chocia, pittosporum, hydrangea heads, white chrysanthemums and daisies, pink roses and finished off with a stick flake.

We finished with two Halloween designs Val Kirkwood’s was made using black oasis in an bright orange vase. In this she inserted dark red foliage including canna lilly leaves and then the seed head was placed in the centre. Val used a lovely selection of orange gerberas, roses and chrysanthemums around the seed head. To complete the stunning design she wrapped the vase in orange organza, placed gourds at the front and popped in a white twig with cobwebs and bats. Jenny Pawson made a charming arrangement called Shades of Autumn. In a brown ceramic bowl she placed greenery including fatshedera, hebe and ivy. Twigs of twisted willow were in the centre and surrounded by poppy seed heads, bright orange gerberas, red roses and burgundy chrysanthemums.

A Very Special Supper

In our culture of excess, we could be forgiven for thinking that more is more; in fact, it is very much the case that smaller portions, and better quality, are far better for health long term. The habit of indulging in the ‘buy one get one free’ trap is not a blessing.

Fish is not the cheapest ingredient to purchase, but just like meat we should be considering where we buy it, and not just how much can we get. I get my fish from fishmongers locally with good reputations for the best and freshest fish for 2 reasons; I like the personal interaction you get on the High Street, and I like to support local independent businesses. Our buying choices are powerful, and we should use them responsibly if we want to retain our wonderfully diverse High Street.

We are blessed in Holt with 2 fresh fishmongers that I definitely don’t want to lose! This is a meal we have once in a while as a special treat.

It’s not going to break the bank, but is certainly more than the average weekly meal. Incidentally, fish cooked this way is literally one of the easiest and quickest meals to do; no slaving over a hot stove for hours!

It’s also a really impressive meal, with delicate flavours, fresh ingredients and great presentation, and great special occasion or dinner party dish. The trick is not to overcook.

Trust the timing, and all will be well! This is also a guilt free way to enjoy chips, counting as one of your 5 a day, with all the indulgence of fries and none of the worry.

Push the boat out and serve with a beautiful crisp white wine – my favourite at the moment is Adnams White Burgundy, one of their bestsellers.

Pan Fried Sea Bass with Sweet Potato and Celeriac Chips and Long-Stemmed Broccoli Sea Bass Fillets (1 per person)

½ celeriac, peeled and cut into thin fries 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into thin fries Long stemmed broccoli (3-4 florets each) Splash olive oil Lemon pepper Fresh dill, chopped Coarse sea salt ½ lemon Knob of butter

preheated hot oven (around 190°) for about 30 – 40 mins, checking that they don’t catch and turning halfway through. Meanwhile, steam your broccoli towards the end of the chips cooking – it will need about 10 mins maximum.

Prepare your large frying pan for cooking the fish, by swirling a splash of olive oil in the bottom, and adding a handful of chopped dill and some lemon pepper. Once everything else is cooked, heat the pan and add in the fish skin side down. Time it, and cook for 4 minutes, then add in a knob of butter and squeeze in the lemon juice, and carefully flip the fish over.

Almost immediately turn off the heat, and leave it for 1 minute, then flip back and serve, spooning over a little of the juice onto the fish.

Ethical shopping is becoming an increasingly hot topic and with Christmas just around the corner local retailers are looking for ways to meet the demand for affordable products that don’t cost the earth, or leave buyers regretting their choices.

A reduced carbon footprint is just one of the benefits of shopping locally; money spent with local independent retailers is more likely to stay in the local area and will help to support your community. Research on spending by local authorities shows that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business 63p stayed in the local economy, compared to 40p with a larger business.

Six local artisans have taken on the challenge of tempting local shoppers at Christmas with a pop-up shop at Wroxham Barns from 3 to 8 December this year.

The women behind the shop have worked together before as part of the North Norfolk Art Trail, and you may be familiar with their work from local galleries and craft fairs but this year they challenged themselves to come up with a range of unique Christmas gifts which showcase some of the best local craftsmanship.

Visitors can choose from fused glass, hand bound books, handmade smocks, ceramics and art, along with cards, gift wrap and Christmas decorations.

The shop will offer a warm welcome to anyone looking for a truly thoughtful gift. Each day the shop will be staffed by several of the people who made the items, and if you have your own ideas you may be able to commission something in time for the big day.

The group are keen to build on the success of the Art Trail which started in 2017 as part of

Templewood also has a tennis court and a ‘reflecting’ pool, so in its setting of woodland, it is rather more than just a bungalow.

At our October meeting, our speaker was Eddie Anderson. He gave us an informative yet interesting talk entitled Templewood, his charming and unusual home situated between Northrepps and Southrepps.

Paul Paget, a successful London architect had it built to his own specification as a kind of weekend retreat and Templewood’s owner is now Eddie Anderson.

Its interior is also uniquely distinctive, as it has one large central room, and other smaller rooms surrounding it. The main room also has another notable feature - an ornately painted ceiling. The original aim was for the building to last for 50 years, but happily it is still going strong 81 years later.

He set the scene by giving personal insights into the surrounding area, as well as some of the history of several large country houses owned by some of his ancestors. These were wealthy and influential people.

Templewood was built as a ‘shooting box’ in 1938 at a cost of £8,000.

Our speaker referred to it as a 1930’s bungalow, though it still has many unusual features, such as four imposing columns and ten statuesque figures of Greek gods.

Our next meeting will be on 20 November. This will be our AGM and our last formal meeting before Christmas.

On behalf of Roughton & District WI, I would be most grateful if you inform your readers that our Fun Quiz and Cream Tea fundraising event on Saturday 26 October raised the amazing total of £900 for the new cancer unit at Cromer Hospital.

A party was held there for 31 family members on Saturday with a buffet and three tier cake!

Despite awful weather on Sunday we had another party for 36 friends and neighbours. Instead of presents £500 was collected for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

It was a great afternoon - a quiz, chocolate tombola and raffle, with a delicious cream tea half way through.

Please can you convey our thanks to everyone who supported us on this amazing fundraising afternoon.

A truly memorable weekend especially as no-one had said a word to us about the plans. It must have been the best kept secret of the year!

To date, the grants distributed have ranged from £600 to over £3,000.

A Superstar Patient!

Meet Lily! This gorgeous girl is a regular visitor to Toll Barn Vets as she suffers from the relatively rare Addison’s disease and requires regular check ups.

It was at one of these regular appointments when her owner mentioned that Lily’s abdomen appeared more swollen than normal. Our veterinary surgeon examined Lily and confirmed that her abdomen had become full of fluid. This can happen for a number of reasons including heart disease, infection, liver disease and tumours and so the decision was made to admit Lily to our hospital so we could fully investigate the cause of the fluid accumulation.

Luckily for Lily the Toll Barn Vets on-site facilities meant she could relax in our hospital whilst we performed blood tests in our inhouse Laboratory, and ultrasound

scans of her heart and abdomen in our diagnostic imaging suite. These tests ruled out many of the causes of fluid accumulation but were unable to diagnose the problem.

Our team then performed a CT scan using our state-of-the-art on-site CT Scanner and this revealed that poor Lily was suffering from a liver lobe torsion – a disease where one of the liver lobes twists around itself cutting off the blood flow to the affected liver lobe. Knowing this can be a lifethreatening emergency, the Toll Barn Vets team performed life-saving surgery that same evening to remove the affected live lobe

and prevent further tissue necrosis (tissue death) and toxin release.

Patients suffering from live lobe torsions are at high risk of blood clotting disorders, toxin release and changes to blood pressure and heart rhythm (arrhythmias) and the Toll Barn Vets dedicated nursing team used specialist monitoring equipment throughout her surgery and recovery. Lily has been a superstar patient and thanks to the swift actions of her owner and our team has beaten all the odds and made a full recovery. Always remember that as an owner you know your pet better than anyone and even a small change could be a sign of a significant problem, so if in any doubt contact your vet to discuss your concerns and hopefully keep your pet fit and healthy.

Toll Barn Vets Raise Record Amount for Macmillan

It’s all waggy tails at Toll Barn Veterinary Centre after holding their Macmillan Coffee Morning on 27th September. A huge £900 was collected, their highest total since holding the yearly event.

A big thank you to all who baked, bought and donated, as well as all the staff who hosted the coffee morning.

The money raised is ring fenced by Macmillan Cancer Support to help local people in North Norfolk who are living with cancer, and their families. Thank you everyone!

Sheringham Stroke Support Group

Sheringham Stroke Support group met on Wednesday 30 October at Anchor Close Sheringham for a most interesting illustrated picture show and talk by Brian Hedge.

It was Brianâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second show about Sheringham, including many unseen pictures of local fishermen, private and RNLI lifeboats and Olive Edis, the British photographer who spent her life between London and Sheringham and had a studio in South Street, Sheringham.

We saw a picture of Olive with her war chauffeur in a large car and driving her own small car.

There were also photos of Sheringham Railway being built plus 28 staff who worked there, the inside of Sheringham's first hotel on the corner of Weybourne and Holt Road and pictures of the High Street and a funeral procession on foot which had to ask the Salvation Army Band to move so they could pass. Sorry I can't remember all the names of Shannocks mentioned but I can recommend this latest contribution by Brian to groups who like Sheringham history.

Our previous two meetings were based on â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;laughter and music and movementâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

The first meeting gave us an opportunity to tell stories, jokes, poetry and funny stories.

It started with our dear Marion Sharp, who has regained her speech and mobility after having several strokes. She told us her story about becoming an ordained Methodist Minister. She ended each part of her journey with â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;well I neverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

Towards the end of this journey she went into Norwich City Football Club and was welcomed into the Club by David Stringer and Bryan Hamilton and spent time in the Club talking to anyone who would like to talk.

On 16 October we had our Music and Movement class with Sally King stretching parts of our bodies that hadn't stretched since our September meeting! Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good job we sit down for these meetings. Our usual cuppa and biscuits revive us to go home around 3.45pm after receiving our raffle prize.

NOTICE OF CASUAL VACANCY

Notice is hereby given that by reason of resignations two vacancies have occurred among The Members of Cromer Town Council. Any person willing to fill these vacancies should apply to the Town Clerk in writing on or before Friday 15th November, 2019. The applicant's name must appear on the current register of the Voters List or the applicant should, during the whole of the twelve months preceding the relevant date, have resided in or within three miles of the parish or the applicant's only place of work during the whole of the twelve months preceding the relevant date is in the parish. The applicant must not be debarred from standing as a Councillor.

PUBLIC elections cannot be held until the year 2023 but for the interim period election to the aforesaid Council will be voted for by the present sitting number of Councillors.

CROMER CEMETERY Regular inspections are on-going and any unauthorised items will be removed and securely stored to await collection. The next inspection will take place shortly.

Please be reminded that breakable items and those which emit light, sound or movement are not permitted in the cemetery.

CROMER POOR LANDS TRUST Cromer Poor Lands Trust has set up a scheme to assist Cromer residents who are in need, hardship or distress, to purchase a new electrical item, school uniform, a bicycle, tank of heating oil etc. The West Norwich Credit Union will offer the applicant a low-cost loan of up to £500 to cover the purchase price with a repayment term to suit the applicant. If the application is approved, once half the loan has been paid off, Cromer Poor Lands Trust will step in and pay the remaining balance.

CROMER NEW YEAR’S DAY FIREWORKS Preparations are underway for the 2020 event and we are again asking for the help of volunteers with the bucket collection. If you would like to help please contact the Deputy Town Clerk. New collectors will be asked to provide valid ID.

COMMUNITY PROJECT We are looking for volunteers to help make flowers for a forthcoming community event. The flower making sessions will be held at Sticky Earth Café every Tuesday morning.

To find the wonders hiding midst the minutes and the hour And see if it’s a fact that dreams come true.

The short mat indoor sessions have begun with Philip E heading the league from James P and Bob A. Jackie P is the leading lady. The first of the monthly silver spoon challenge was won by Bob A in a very close contest with John H.

I thought I’d have to wait awhile for marvels to appear But no, within an instant they were there.

Dancing round and waving, a mighty multitude Enough for everyone, and then to spare.

Members are very welcome to enjoy our clubhouse facilities during the winter. We meet for a (very!) short mat bowls session every Wednesday afternoon, 1.45pm, and meet every Friday evening from 7pm.

I simply hadn’t seen them for what they really are Nor noticed how they glinted, gleamed and shone.

All the normal boring ‘stuff ’ which makes our day to day The things we never miss … until they’re gone.

A coffee morning will be held on Saturday 7 December from 10am.

Members, old and new, are welcome. If you are tempted to play next year, come and have a chat in our friendly atmosphere.

Anyone is welcome to come to the clubhouse on Thursday afternoon, 5th December, from 1pm to 4pm to peruse and buy a second-hand book, DVD and CD or two. Visit John on the Runton Road. Donations will also be gratefully accepted.

Ground-breaking ceremony for new Sheringham Leisure Centre Significant milestone as building work begins The ground has officially been broken to mark the beginning of construction work to build a multi-million-pound leisure centre in Sheringham, expected to be completed in summer 2021.

North Norfolk District Councillors joined staff from Metnor Construction and Everyone Active to celebrate the major milestone in the development that will see the existing 31-year old ‘Splash’ replaced with a state of the art facility with lots of new features.

The new centre will include a six-lane, 25-metre pool, a 13-metre learner pool with an adjustable depth floor, fitness suite, community rooms, multi-purpose studios, a spin studio and a café. The design has been progressed with the facility’s accessibility in mind and incorporates eleven dedicated accessible car parking spaces close to the building entrance, level access into the building through the main reception, automatic entry doors within the lobby area and accessible changing rooms.

The project, which supports North Norfolk District Council’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of its residents, will ensure the provision of leisure and fitness facilities for local communities and visitors to north Norfolk is secured for the future.

The new leisure centre is due to open for summer 2021. Working with partners including Sport England, the Council is seeking to increase participation in sport which will contribute to an improvement in social and cultural benefits. The social and fitness spaces will help put the facility at the heart of the community.

On the ground floor, a dedicated ‘Changing Places’ facility will be provided which offers more space than standard accessible changing spaces and equipment including a height adjustable changing bench and a hoist.
