Light Party - Shining in the Darkness ...

At the beginning of the month Cromer Church was transformed for our Light Party.

Phil and Russell Broughton did a fantastic job with the lighting, so much so that it literally made people stop in their tracks as they came into the church and made passers-by come in and see what was going on!

With such a great setting, everything else just fell into place. We had a free cafe for adults, a neon disco and various light based activities for children ending with a giant picnic tea.

Light Party - Shining in the Darkness ...

daughter and I really enjoyed the evening, I must visit the church more often.”

Continude from front cover... The lantern procession around the church to ‘Shine from the inside out’ was a very special moment. We had 170 people come to the event led by a team of 14 working together to make it a successful, fun and exciting evening for families.

Simon Fenn, the event organiser, said “I cannot begin to describe how pleased I am with how successful the Light Party was. It was a fantastic evening for all the family and we pulled together as a team to provide a warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We were able to celebrate the light rather than darkness and demonstrate God’s love to the wider community”.

Comments like “wow”, “inspiring”, “brilliant” and “amazing” were heard over and over again.

Rev William Warren said “It was great to see the church filled with so many families having a brilliant time and enjoying the party atmosphere”.

A few parents said that they were really pleased for a decent alternative to the typical Halloween party as their children weren't particularly keen on scary things but they didn't want to miss out on a 'fun' evening.

One parent that had seen the event on social media travelled from Norwich with her two daughters. She said on Facebook "It was just so lovely and we all had the best time. Thank you so so much to everyone who put so much time and effort in for all of the children. We got a warm welcome and people were so friendly, generous and kind. It was lovely to see so much hustle and bustle in the church."

For more activities at Cromer Church see www.cromer-church.org.uk or follow us on Facebook. Email simon.fenn@cromer-church.org.uk 01263 512000.

POP-IN GROUP

Age Concern North Norfolk held an event to celebrate ‘The Older Peoples Day’ and the re-location of its Pop-in group. The group is held at the Community Centre in Cromer, every Friday from 10am to 12 noon.

The Pop-in group supports carers and older people with dementia or those who are isolated or lonely. The group provides activities such as arts and craft, music and movement, or just chatting about your week over a cup of tea.

A visiting parent from another church, took several pictures to inspire their church to do something similar, saying “this is how church should be”.

Once a month we have guest speakers, which have previously included: • Adult Social Team, about your care needs. • Natwest Bank, re- scams. • Alzheimer’s Society, re- dementia. • Carers Matter Norfolk, re- carers need, advice and support. • (ASSD) Assistive Technology.

Another said, “Thank you for a fantastic evening the other night, my

Cromer Peregrines Cheque to Church

On Saturday 26 October, Cromer Church received a cheque for £2000 as a donation by the Cromer Peregrine Project to offset loss of earnings since the church tower has been closed to protect the nesting peregrine falcons which unexpectedly chose Cromer to be their new territory.

The cheque was handed by Eddie Anderson, Secretary of the Cromer Peregrine Project and

received by Gavin Fitt, Cromer Church caretaker who has been closely involved throughout the year with protecting the birds.

Local shopkeepers and traders have all benefitted by the increased footfall into town by visitors arriving from all over the county to see the falcons.

Over 8500 people were counted by the volunteer watchers, and most made donations having had some spectacular views of these otherwise wild raptors. Birdwatchers from around the country say Cromer is the best site in Britain for viewing every detail of the magnificent falcons - renowned as the fastest creatures on the planet. Not only from outside as they fly around the church tower but also on the CCTV screen beside the newly furbished Teashop inside the church, which reveals every moment of the falcons nesting sequence.

A film of the whole story will be on sale later this month.

Upper Sheringham Bells have been tuned!

We are still waiting for the date when the bells from All Saints Church in Upper Sheringham will be making their journey back from the bell works in Dorset to North Norfolk ready to be returned to the tower to be fitted in the new frame before they will once more ring out over the village. We had hoped this would be before Christmas, but this is now looking unlikely – it should be early in the New Year – watch this space!

Whilst the bells have been away, they have been tuned so we are expecting them to sound amazing. To tune bells metal is taken out from the inside of the bell – see photo. Once they return, we will start to ring them prior to every Sunday Service at Upper Sheringham and also hold a ‘practice night’ on a Tuesday evening from 7.30pm to 9pm. All will be welcome to come along and have a go.

The three young falcons have now departed the town, but their parents, named as Poppy and Henry (after Poppyland and Henry Blogg, Cromer's most famous lifeboatman) are still occupying the church, and keeping the local pigeon population under control. It is expected the falcons will remain all winter and begin courtship and mating in February.

All those involved are hoping for a repeat performance in 2020.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

Cheery souvenir for every day of year! One of Norfolk’s most prolific authors of recent years is dipping his toes into publishing waters.

On Tuesday 5 November, after a tasty lunch, Steve Piotrowski gave an enthralling talk about the award-winning Suffolk Community Barn Owl Project.

Cromer-based writer, broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper has come up with his 45th book and it’s first off the production line of Harnser Press, the new publishing company he’s set up with elder son Danny.

The project was founded by Steve in 2005 as part of the response to the national decline in barn owl numbers (there were 12,000 pairs in 1932 but only 3,750 in 1982). He explained that the decrease was a result of a lack of feeding and nesting opportunities brought about by loss of habitat. The project has installed more than two thousand nest boxes, the majority of which are made by SOLD, a Lowestoft-based charity. These nest boxes have enabled the barn owl to recover and there has been a ten-fold rise in population since the late 1980s.

The Norfolk Almanac, a handsome hardback, is a treasure trove of local gems collected over many decades. There’s a cheery souvenir for every day of the year – and the book has the virtue of never going out of date! Beautifully illustrated by local artist Sophie Bonham, pages are liberally spattered with local dialect and humour. There are proverbs, remedies, teasers, yarns and a host of other tantalising verbal delights. Find out if you share a birthday with a famous Norfolk character such as Lord Nelson, The Singing Postman, turkey tycoon Bernard Matthews, prison reformer Elizabeth Fry and legendary lifeboatman Henry Blogg. Many more diversions as you dip daily or even rush through the months It makes an ideal present for all lovers of Norfolk, not least exiles who seek an authentic breath of home.

Steve stated that the barn owl is one of the most dedicated parents in the bird world. The male is much smaller than the female and is excluded from the nest once the eggs hatch, although he continues to feed his young. Barn owls are silent hunters, relying on their incredibly sensitive hearing to locate their prey. Their main target is the short-tailed vole, which, fortunately for the owl, is widespread in the UK and is very productive, breeding like mice. A surprising fact Steve revealed is that there is no waterproofing on the owl’s plumage, which is why drowning is the second biggest killer, after road accidents, of barn owls.

On behalf of the 36 members and 2 guests present, our Chairman, Dave Williams, thanked Steve for his fascinating talk.

The Norfolk Almanac is on sale at £12.99 in Jarrold book departments in Norwich and Cromer.as well as The Holt Bookshop. It can also be purchased online from the website www.harnserpress.co.uk. Don’t forget to ask for author’s signature and any special dedication required.

We shall next meet at the Links Hotel in West Runton on Tuesday 3 December for our Christmas Lunch and a talk by Simon Partridge about the history and traditions of Christmas. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our monthly meetings, you will be warmly welcomed.

Skip will be signing copies and enjoying a mardle at the Jarrold store in Cromer on Saturday, 7 December between 11am and 1pm.

Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

Cromer glass artist flutters into Aldborough with new collection

Christmas will soon be upon us. With this in mind those seeking unique gifts for loved ones have various opportunities to discover handmade gems that are otherwise unavailable on the high street.

“I am introducing my new Christmas ranges,” reveals local glass art Sue Purser Hope, who is Chair of the Contemporary Glass Society.

Her latest collection of glass art is inspired by her passion for the circus. Her work features fused and painted forms that hold secrets and stories, creating explosions of potent, dynamic colour and shapes in a three-dimensional format. Susan can testify that life is never dull within the world of glass.

How Time Flies

Halloween has come and gone, As has November the fifth. Now we are heading for Christmas, ‘Twill be here toute de suite and forthwith. With presents to buy, cards we must write, And family meals to prepare, It feels as if there’s no time to ourselves, We should be doing something elsewhere! The passage of time is so speedy, Though sometimes we wish it would stop. This year has flown by like a whirlwind, I feel like a child’s spinning top. Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, All fly by like bats after dark. We rush through our lives without seeing That each year always leaves its own mark. Are there others out there in the cosmos? Other worlds with people like us? If so, are they ready for Christmas? Do they have all this stress and fuss? Frances Wraight

Graham Allen Award Winners 2019 New Visitor Centre on Iconic North Norfolk Estate Wins Annual Design Award

The Lookout, on Holkham Estate, has been presented with North Norfolk District Council’s Graham Allen Award, an esteemed award given each year to the project considered to have made the most significant contribution to the built environment within the district.

The new visitor centre forms a striking circular arrival to the Holkham National Nature Reserve. The building comprises of a small café, orientation exhibition and conveniences for visitors through its distinctive timber cladded finishes and open, inviting layout.

With the nature reserve attracting approximately 800,000 visitors per year, this stunning new gateway promises to offer a unique visitor experience for years to come.

James Bracey, General Manager at Holkham Estate, said “We feel extremely honoured to be recognised for this award.

The construction of the Lookout has created a much needed visitor facility at Lady Anne’s Drive, Holkham. This iconic building was designed to sit subtly within the landscape, whilst creating a strong link between the visitor and the natural environment. The building intentionally provides the simplest of facilities

of respite, refuge and interpretation.

This project demonstrates Holkham’s commitment to the natural and built environment.”

The award has been running for the last 38 years to celebrate the best practice in design and conservation in North Norfolk. The results of the awards were announced yesterday, November 7, at a ceremony at North Norfolk District Council’s offices in Cromer.

Phillip Rowson, North Norfolk District Council’s Head of Planning, said “The Lookout is a fantastic new focal point for visitors exploring the nature reserve and will encourage understanding of its sensitive habitats and wildlife. The centre offers incredible views of the surrounding landscape and it’s the relationship with its setting which makes it so special.

“The quality of this year’s entries and subsequent shortlist for judging was exceptionally high, so this year’s winners can be incredibly proud of their achievement.”

The Lookout was not the only winner on the day. The prize for Highly Commended went to The Shambles Café. The project saw the repair

www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

13

and conversion of a derelict Grade II Listed building in the heart of North Walsham.

The building, which dates back to the 16th Century, is one of the oldest in the town and had fallen into a serious state of disrepair. The historic building has now been lovingly restored and is a popular local enterprise which has transformed the vitality of the area.

Fakenham also enjoyed the spotlight when The Mews on Barons Hall Lane won the Commended prize. The project saw the creation of 10 high quality new homes formed in a contemporary terrace.

The People’s Choice Award, voted for members of the public at North Norfolk District Council’s Greenbuild event, went to the refurbishment of Little Regents Hall in Sheringham. The historic community hall has been cleverly restored into a Bed and Breakfast.

Previous winners of the have included the refurbishment of the Gunton Arms on the edge of Thorpe Market and Hootz House at Pensthorpe Natural Park and last year’s overall winner; Church Barn in East Ruston.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Bassanio, the little cat mentioned last time is still on antibiotics and, although his new family can see some progress, more will be known when he goes back to see the vet next week. We will keep you posted of his progress.

The cats in care with Irene will shortly be moving to their new accommodation. While waiting for the new pens to be installed, the cats have been in the old pens which will in future be used for storage of food, bedding, cat litter etc. There has been a minor hiccup preventing the move as, due to the bad weather at the time they were being installed, water got in causing a drip and this needs to dry out before they take up residence. Irene can’t wait for this to happen as, at present, the goods which will be stored in the old pens are taking up room in her home and garage.

We were also delighted to be contacted by a family who will be joining the branch and taking over the pens at present with Marian, our lady in Briston, who although giving up caring for the cats for health reasons, will still be involved with other aspects of the work that we do. Work on the base for the pens will start next week and, once this is down and the tiles for the base have been laid, we will arrange for the pens to be transferred to their new base. In the meantime, the cats in residence at Briston will need to be moved, either to other pens, as and when they become free, or to our friend who runs a cattery and is always only too happy to help us out for holiday cover and emergencies.

Although the weather was good for the sale on the 9th we think takings will be down, hopefully not because someone removed our posters. At the time of writing the money still has to be counted. However, there is very good news on fund raising as the stall at High Hedges has taken an amazing £741.89 this year and this is despite some people taking goods and not paying for them. Many thanks to Sharon for all the hard work

she does looking after the stall. We do rely on people being honest when buying goods there so must assume the thieves are not animal lovers. A recent Side view of the two new pens at Irene's collection at Morrisons in Cromer raised a further £210 for the cats in care. We would like to thank Barbara for organising the collection and her helpers for manning the buckets.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Northrepps 'Poppyland' Branch of Royal Lord Lieutenent British Legion of Norfolk, Destination was Northrepps Village Hall on 2 November, when Branch members from North Walsham, Southrepps, Wymondham, Dereham, King's Lynn, Middleton, Cromer Womens' Section, and ex Servicemen from Cromer travelled to join our Branch members and guests to celebrate the formation of our Branch some 70 years ago.

We were also joined by Brigadier Max Marriner and Councillor John Toye from North Norfolk District Council. Descendents of founder members, poppy sellers, our Poppy co-ordinator and community organisations which we work with were amongst our guests. A very movingThanksgiving for our Branch was given by Miss Janet Payne.

congratulating us on all the support we have given to our Ex Servicemen and Women over the seven decades and wishing us every success for the future. Our National Chairman Una Cleminson also congratulated us, and will be visiting our Branch in the New Year.

A special 'thank you' to Catherine Smith for presenting us with two celebration cakes.

We were honoured to receive messages of congratulations from Her Majesty the Queen who is our Patron, our Norfolk County Patron General, Lord Dannatt and his wife, who is

This was, indeed, a milestone within our Branch, with memories of the past captured in photographs on show, and music right across the seven decades.

We would like to thank everyone who helped us make this a great success and as we are now fast approaching Remembrance Time, there could be no greater tribute to each life lost in conflict from the

Great War to the present day, than to have a 21st century Branch of the Royal British Legion, carrying forward the support which is needed for all ex Service personnel and their families, remembering that they gave us our freedom to do this, and it is an honour in their memory. On Friday 8 November we were honoured and delighted to join the pupils, staff and parents of Northrepps Primary School at their Remembrance, with our Standard Bearer and Mr Ted Briggs who played The Last Post.

We were honoured to join with our village and members from our neighbouring communities on Sunday for our Service of Remembrance.

A very full Programme for 2020 will see us very involved within our community, with one very big event on 27 June 2020, Armed Forces Day very appropriately right here in Poppyland. Our Branch Meeting next month will be held on Thursday 5 December at The White Horse, Overstrand, 7pm for 7.15pm. For further information contact Lorna on 01263 579633.

Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band

‘Keeping-In-Touch’ Group AGE CONCERN NORTH NORFOLK HUB

Don t worry, they re not as tough as they would like you to think. They might give the impression they are mobsters from the 1920s Chicago Mafiosi but really they are just pussy cats. And while you might think the case contains a Thompson Submachine gun. Well, it holds nothing more than another trombone and some slide oil.

However although trombones aren’t dangerous in the wrong hands, you certainly wouldn’t want to stand too close to an excited energetic trombonist playing a prestissimo (very fast) piece of music.

There was a time when, in marching bands, trombones would be in the second row, behind the cornets or trumpets. Until, in the 1920 s a horse, frightened probably by

The Mayor of Cromer Councillor Richard Leeds invites you and your guests to a

To avoid such disasters today, trombone players are positioned at the front of the band where they can do no harm, and with adequate seating space in brass and wind bands.

In large orchestras you will see, if you watch the Proms, that the bones are sometimes segregated, almost off-stage, to avoid concern to other musicians and to cause as little worry to the conductor as possible.

Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band may be seen and heard playing festive music during December including at Upper Sheringham Church on Sunday 8th at 3pm, St Peters Church, Sheringham on Saturday 14th at 7.30 pm, at Aldborough Community Centre on Sunday 15th at 11am and at Felbrigg Hall Courtyard on Sunday 22nd at 3pm. Earlier this year a Cromer local, Kate Wolstenholme, visited RNLI Cromer to take some photos of various crew members. Kate has graduated from Commercial Photography this year at Arts University Bournemouth.

The images she took of the Lifeboat crew and station were for the rescue section of her final major project ‘Littoral’, which is based on our relationship to the sea as an island. The portrait of Steve Guest then got shortlisted for Portrait of Britain 2019, and was one of 200 portraits to be published in the book.

Other photos from the book can be seen on Kate’s website www.katewolstenholme.co.uk.

Mental Health Awareness

The growing movement of Mental Health awareness has captivated the UK with employers and HR professionals championing the importance of having a good work life balance. Extra working hours, low wages and a need to increase earning capacity means that the balance of work and life can fall out of sync. As a result, the mental health of those employees is put in jeopardy.

What signs can HR look out for in employees who may need help? People with unhealthy work life balances may feel unhappy about being at and devoting time to work. If your employees/colleagues are showing signs of lack of motivation at work, distracted behaviour or seem unhappy at work, these may be signs that they need some help. Similarly, those who seem to worry about work at home, those who are not developing personally outside of work or seem to be neglecting other aspects of their lives in favour of work, could be struggling with an unhealthy work life balance.

What can be done to help those with unhealthy work life balances? Head of Employment Law Nicola Strefford explains "Nurturing employees is the best way to ensure you are getting the best out of your workforce. Incorrect work life balance can affect productivity, absence figures and turnover for businesses so it's extremely important that employees are encouraged to have a correct work life balance and feel taken care of. We always advise clients to deal with issues

sensitively as heavy intervention from employers can negatively impact on an employee's mental health, causing problems to often get worse, not better."

Ways in which employers can help promote healthy work life balances, according to the Mental Health Foundation are: • Have policies in place which deal with stress at work and procedures which nurture all employees, especially those who may have mental health issues; • Promote an open-door policy across your business. Employees should feel able to speak to supervisors about time constraints and work load issues, without fear of being criticised or disciplined; • Assisting employees to utilise their time at work to ensure they aren't working longer hours in order to meet targets or work demands; • Provide training on work life balance to all staff; • Encourage activities which promote good mental health. Encouraging all staff to get fresh air on breaks; lunchtime exercise or relaxation classes. (The list above has been extracted from the Mental Health Foundation website)

One of the main goals of promoting a work life balance for employers is assisting employees to utilise their time at work effectively. Employers should provide training on prioritising work tasks; structuring time at work and planning the working day; taking adequate breaks during the work day; making use of annual leave entitlements and using time at home to have

a break from work. Trainee Solicitor Natalie Smith comments "Broaching this subject with employees can be a sensitive issue so getting advice from the outset is the best way to approach any problem. We encourage all clients to contact us as soon as a potential issue arises, so we can offer support and training whilst also avoiding a situation spiralling unnecessarily."

Our specialist employment law team provide expert advice to both employers and employees on a full range of employment matters. If you need any help or guidance on offering training to employees or you feel there is an unhealthy culture of work life balance in your business, contact our specialist employment team on 01603 693500, email Enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk or visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk.

12 December General Election Information Several new polling stations to be used by the Council

The UK shall be voting in a General Election on Thursday, 12 December 2019 with Polling Stations being open between 7am and 10pm across our district. North Norfolk District Council has had to implement several changes to Polling Stations due to usual buildings being unavailable at such short notice. We very much appreciate the work that has gone into making our Polling Stations available for this election including the movement or cancellation of pre-existing bookings which had been in place.

The Polling Station changes for this election are as follows: • Blakeney change from Blakeney Village Hall to Blakeney Scout Hut, Langham Road, Blakeney, NR25 7PG. • Holt change from Holt Community Centre to Holt Parish Church Hall, Church Street, Holt, NR25 6BB. • Tunstead change from Tunstead Primary School to Horse & Groom Public House, Granary Way, Market Street, Tunstead, NR12 8AH.

Furthermore, there have been two further changes in polling arrangements:• Following a request from Matlaske Parish Council we have changed the Polling Station arrangements for electors in Matlaske from Little Barningham Village Hall to Baconsthorpe Village Hall, School Lane, Baconsthorpe, NR25 6LJ. • Due to the unavailability of Sustead Village Hall we have changed the Polling Station arrangements for electors in Sustead which also includes electors from Bessingham and Metton so that they will now vote at a Portacabin sited at Hanworth Village Hall, The Common, Hanworth, NR11 7HP.

Residents who wish to vote and are not already on the Electoral Register will have to register by 11.59pm on Tuesday, 26 November 2019. If you are not registered you will not be able to vote at this Election.

If you wish to apply for an Absent Vote at this election the deadline for the receipt of postal vote applications are: 5pm on Tuesday, 26 November 2019 with the deadline for Proxy Vote applications being; 5pm on Wednesday, 4 December 2019. Postal Vote packs will be dispatched on Friday, 22 November to those who have permanent postal voting arrangements and those who have applied for a postal vote before 6 November. A second dispatch will be made on Tuesday, 3 December to those who apply for a postal vote between Wednesday, 6 November and 5pm on Tuesday, 26 November.

Finally an emergency proxy application can be made up to 5pm on 12 December, Polling Day, on the grounds of being unavailable to attend your polling station due to a medical emergency or employment reasons.

Chocolate and Blood Orange Tart

It’s always a superb night of signing, brass banding and lessons from various guest readers under the stars and this year will be held on Friday 20th December at 6pm here at the Grove. 01263 512412

With the dreaded C word not far away now it’s the perfect time to start to give some proper attention to the wonderful world of desserts.

After the blockbusting success of Ann’s marmalade bread and butter pudding in the last episode it’s time for something on the same lines, but just a little sharper and less filling (unless you go back for thirds of course!)

A reminder that a definite date for your Christmas diaries is our annual Carol Concert in aid of the fantastic folks down at the RNLI.
