Cromer Fire Axe Presentations More than 100 years’ service, fighting fires and saving lives has been recognised at a special event for three long-standing Norfolk Fire and Rescue Cromer on-call firefighters. Colleagues from across the area gathered at the town’s fire station to celebrate with David Abbs, who retired last month after 40 years.

The event also celebrated with Neil Babbage, who has also done 40 years with the Cromer crew, and John Baker, who was there for 27 years and now manages a group of fire stations full-time. Continued on page 4...

capacity of 450 people. Health and Safety regulations prevent us from exceeding this limit and, regrettably, once 450 has been reached people will be turned away. In fairness to all, it will not be possible to reserve seating. Doors open half an hour before.

Will says ”We have received such a warm welcome from the Cromer Community and we are really looking forward to our time here. We are particularly looking forward to our first Christmas in Cromer and enjoying all that area has to offer this season. Christmas is such a special time for families and it’s a time to be thankful for God’s amazing love for us in the gift of his son Jesus. Last year over 1,500 visited our church and we are praying that many of you will visit us again this year”.

Finally, we will be celebrating the birth of Jesus at our Christmas Eve Communion in the Parish Church at 11pm, and again on Christmas Day with a tradition Communion service at 9am and an All-Age Communion service at 10.45am. Cromer Church family wish you a Happy Christmas and very Happy New Year. www.cromerchurch.org.uk

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER S OLICITORS in in 2019? 2019? SOLICITORS

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.” I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time fo or many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2019 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 0 1263 8 823465 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

FRIENDS OF CROMER MUSEUM

William Wilberforce and Thomas Clarkson are well known figures in the anti-slavery movement of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries but a less well-known figure is Thomas Fowell Buxton, a man with strong Cromer connections. Buxton was the subject of the third in our winter series of talks and the speaker was Dr Rob Knee, well known to many of our members because of his knowledge of the history of the Cromer area. Buxton was born in Essex in 1786 and his connection with the area really began when he married Hannah Gurney in 1805. His mother was a Quaker and she had links to the Gurney family of Earlham Hall in Norwich. When working in London he became friendly with many leading members of The Society of Friends, especially the Fry family. Elizabeth Fry, nee Gurney, became famous as a prison reformer. Buxton became MP for Weymouth in 1818 but had already gained a reputation as a reformer by speaking out against capital punishment and supporting Wilberforce and Clarkson in their successful campaign to abolish the slave trade. By 1821 Wilberforce, whose health was failing, considered Buxton to be just the man to lead the anti-slavery campaign in Parliament. In 1833 enough evidence had been gathered to convince Parliament that abolition was essential and that it was achievable if slave owners were compensated financially. £20 million was enough to see the measure passed. In 1820 four of his children died of whooping cough and measles and it was then that the family moved to Cromer. Anna Gurney of Northrepps Hall, a cousin of his wife, became a close confident as did his daughter Priscilla who throughout the many years of campaigning had acted as Buxton’s secretary. One of the blue plaques put up in Cromer recently recognises the contribution Priscilla Buxton made to the anti-slavery movement. Thomas Fowell Buxton died in 1845. His legacy is now widely recognised. “One of the ill effects of cruelty is that it makes bystanders cruel” are words that stand as a fitting tribute to his achievements. The next talk is on Friday 17 January at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. John Morgan will be speaking on the history and development of North Lodge Park. Cost members £3, non-members £4.

CROMER PIER CHRISTMAS SHOW 2019 partner for Olly), juggling and other variety skills really is a massive boost for the show.

The festive season is here and the 2019 Christmas Pier Show opened on Saturday 23 November.

It is immediately obvious that the production team have worked hard to deliver a show of wonderful Christmas song, dance and all sorts of other merriment.

The show’s compere and comedian, Olly Day, keeps things moving along with brilliant all- round talent (as only Olly can). Mark James with his sleight of hand magic, blended with comedy (a good

Singers Fiona Jessica Wilson and Harvey James are brilliant and perform a wide range of material.

As usual, the Christmas Dancers keep the whole performance moving at pace and also slow it down in a beautiful ballet section which is spectacular.

Cromer WI

To add the cute and ‘ahh’ factor, children from Marlene’s School of Dance perform

superbly alongside the professional artists.

Musical Director Nigel Hogg and Choreographer Di Cooke have made this a show of the highest calibre.

As usual Ian Westbrook (set design and scenery), Amanda Hill (lighting) and Laura Whyte (costume) compliment the show with their expertise.

The show runs until 30 December. To book your tickets telephone the Box Office on 01263 512495 or book online at www.cromerpier.co.uk

learn about their trees and one took part in fitness and fun. Both were returning after enjoying many courses there.

We had 41 members brave the awful weather for our meeting on 14 November.

Our competition was Childhood. Yvonne Hoggarth came 1st with a Tell the Time book she had owned as a child. Joint 2nd were Brenda Boyd with a childhood photo and Rosie Evans with her teddy bear and a photograph and 3rd was Sue Stoneman with a photo. As we could see there was a theme emerging from the entries.

After singing Jerusalem we heard about a visit to KindKafe in Norwich where members enjoyed tea and cake before taking an underground tour to explore layers of architecture dating from the 15th century. Led by a local storyteller and historian they discovered the past of Norwich including eerie prison cells, hidden streets and curious tunnels.

Two members celebrate November birthdays and they received posies made by Moira Harding.

Two of are members then told us about their recent visit to Denman Collage in Oxfordshire which is the WI centre for learning, offering day schools and residential courses. One member visited Kew Gardens to

Our next meeting will be our Christmas celebration on 12 December in Cromer Community Hall at 2pm.

Mini face-lift surgery rises in popularity

12 December General Election Information Several new polling stations to be used by the Council

The UK shall be voting in a General Election on Thursday, 12 December 2019 with Polling Stations being open between 7am and 10pm across our district.

Cosmetic medicine and surgery goes through trends. Whilst non-surgical options such as injectables, fillers and lasers are very effective for early signs of facial ageing, they cannot tighten a lot of loose skin. A surgical face or neck-lift entails removing this excess skin. For natural looking results we can just tighten it a little and add some volume with fillers of fat transfer and use lasers to improve the skin. Such combination yields superior results and is much better than too much of fillers or surgery alone.

North Norfolk District Council has had to implement several changes to Polling Stations due to usual buildings being unavailable at such short notice. We very much appreciate the work that has gone into making our Polling Stations available for this election including the movement or cancellation of pre-existing bookings which had been in place. The Polling Station changes for this election are as follows: • Blakeney change from Blakeney Village Hall to Blakeney Scout Hut, Langham Road, Blakeney, NR25 7PG. • Holt change from Holt Community Centre to Holt Parish Church Hall, Church Street, Holt, NR25 6BB. • Tunstead change from Tunstead Primary School to Horse & Groom Public House, Granary Way, Market Street, Tunstead, NR12 8AH.

Many patients do not want to go under general anaesthesia. Being under general anaesthesia can be associated with risks. Operations under general anaesthesia also tend to have prolonged bruising and recovery involved. With our technique, the operation is performed under local anaesthesia with an awake patient.

Furthermore, there have been two further changes in polling arrangements:• Following a request from Matlaske Parish Council we have changed the Polling Station arrangements for electors in Matlaske from Little Barningham Village Hall to Baconsthorpe Village Hall, School Lane, Baconsthorpe, NR25 6LJ. • Due to the unavailability of Sustead Village Hall we have changed the Polling Station arrangements for electors in Sustead which also includes electors from Bessingham and Metton so that they will now vote at a Portacabin sited at Hanworth Village Hall, The Common, Hanworth, NR11 7HP.

Apart from a full range of non-surgical treatments we offer a variety of surgical options such as

What types of facelifts do you offer at the Coltishall Clinic?

• One stitch facelift - It is suitable for younger patients or for those who do not want a full face or neck lift but desire a subtle result at low cost. • Laser face-lift - this is an excellent option when the main consideration is excess fat in chin and jowls. Laser can melt these and also heats the surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening. • Mini face and neck lift - It is also known by various other names such as weekend or mini-facelift, S-lift, MACS lift or a facial lipo-lift. The skin is lifted, underlying layer is tightened and finally the skin is repositioned and closed with fine sutures. • 3-D facelift – this is a no knife facelift for patients who do not have lot of saggy skin but have lost volume from their face. We take fat from where patients don’t want it such as abdomen or thighs and transfer it to face where it provides a volumetric 3-D face-lift.

Residents who wish to vote and are not already on the Electoral Register will have to register by 11.59pm on Tuesday, 26 November 2019. If you are not registered you will not be able to vote at this Election.

If you wish to apply for an Absent Vote at this election the deadline for the receipt of postal vote applications are: 5pm on Tuesday, 26 November 2019 with the deadline for Proxy Vote applications being; 5pm on Wednesday, 4 December 2019. Postal Vote packs will be dispatched on Friday, 22 November to those who have permanent postal voting arrangements and those who have applied for a postal vote before 6 November. A second dispatch will be made on Tuesday, 3 December to those who apply for a postal vote between Wednesday, 6 November and 5pm on Tuesday, 26 November.

Finally an emergency proxy application can be made up to 5pm on 12 December, Polling Day, on the grounds of being unavailable to attend your polling station due to a medical emergency or employment reasons.

No matter who you vote for ... VOTE There are 4 candidates for the Parliamentary constituency of North Norfolk. December 12th at a Polling Station near you.

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS Medical Director at the Coltishall clinic has had advanced training in face and neck lifts in the USA and has adapted best practice and technological innovations. As the procedure is performed in the clinic purely under local anesthesia and not in a hospital, it offers the advantages of a natural look, quick recovery, minimal complication risk, minimal scars, no hair loss, less cost and less risk of infection.

A Foggy Drive

We’d been to see some relatives, Who lived a fair way off. We left for home as darkness fell, While our family waved us off. Banks of fog formed as we left, Floating and swirling around. We didn’t know the road very well, But hoped we’d get home safe and sound. Ahead, we saw a car’s rear lights, There was nothing else we could do. We followed that car as close as we could We just stuck to those lights like glue! The lights turned left, then right, then stopped. A voice said “I’ve arrived!” A man’s face appeared at our window. We’d followed him into his drive! Frances Wraight

It’s higher tech Worstead CoE Primary School for the younger kids at the Worstead Pre School. Three laptops will be paid for so that observations can be recorded. It’s a curriculum requirement.

The box pews at St Mary’s Church, Worstead, can now be lowered to improve sight-lines. The vicar, Paul Cubitt, says the work should be finished by the end of May. Plans will also be drawn up for kitchen and toilet facilities. The Cromer and District Food Bank will have banners made. Project Manager, Tim Morton said “We rely on grants to enable us to meet operational costs, but it is also vital to raise our profile and these banners will help.”

Training for the trainers can now be paid for by the Sea Palling Independent Lifeboat. Three courses are required by the Royal Yacht Association. Once the volunteer passes these tests they can give training to up to 30 others.

North Walsham & Dilham Canal Trust will use its grant to refurbish the Ebridge lower lock gates. Chair of the Festival Trustees, Jane Bond said the grant is “in appreciation for the conservation they carry out and for allowing the public to use the canal.” It’s a hearts and minds exercise for the seventh grant. Spitting image?

by Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr There is a long held stereotype of judges being old-fashioned. Judge James Pickles became a household name in the 1960s when he asked ‘Who are The Beatles?’ The reality is that the Law Courts are open to scientific developments to help them achieve justice. The Courts have always had to address the question of parentage. It was the stuff of tabloid newspapers in days past. Today, as DNA testing becomes more accessible, the Courts now have to consider how to balance the benefits of DNA testing against the rights of the individual.

Jordan Rogers, a care worker, inherited a large country estate, after proving through DNA testing that he was the son of an aristocrat. That ‘rags to riches’ tale came two years after the exhuming of the body of the Spanish artist Salvador Dali for paternity testing. The two most frequent uses are to prove or, conversely, to disprove, that someone is biologically related to a person who has died; usually, but not always, because there is an inheritance at stake.

Arguments have been put to the Court, by someone refusing to submit to DNA testing, that it is interference with their human rights. In response the Judge held that the interference was a proportionate means of protecting the

public interest in the accurate resolution of inheritance disputes.

Another case revolved on whether DNA evidence extracted from the deceased for medical purposes could be released to determine parentage. There, not to do so would have led to injustice, and so, the Judge gave permission for the DNA testing. Where there are sound medical reasons, such as the treatment or prevention of inherited disorders or diseases, for the testing of paternity, and a medical sample is readily available following death, the Court can also order testing.

It has also been held that there is no infringement of a third party’s human rights by DNA testing, even if they find out that they have an additional grandchild. The appellant’s rights must be weighed against the respondent’s rights. Here, there is a slant in favour of the respondent, so as to err on the side of preserving the status quo. The Court is able to order directions where there is reluctance to cooperate.

In cases where there is doubt as to parentage, the only way that an executor of an estate can be certain that they are distributing the estate of a deceased person accurately, is to ascertain all the beneficiaries.

The improved ability to determine parentage through genetic testing is impacting on the law. A paternity test is generally cheap and painless and can be done using a hair or saliva sample; no blood or needles required! It is much cheaper than the production of witness statements and other evidence. Its great advantage is that it is both definitive and can help parties reach a settlement at an early stage. Cromer and District Garden Society

Our November meetings always begin with the AGM and the chance to look back on the past year.

We had to find a new home for five meetings as the Community Hall was out of use and The Cottage on Louden Road proved to be a very friendly temporary home.

We took part in the North Lodge Park gardening festival for the first time and the day was such a success that it will now be a regular fixture in our programme.

Visits were made to the Chet and Waveney Valley vineyard and to Raveningham Hall and gardens and both were very popular. Cromer were winners of the annual quiz held with our friends from the Sheringham and Hoveton/Wroxham societies. With a full programme of talks as well you can see that it has been a very busy year.

Following the AGM we were treated to a demonstration of basket making by Jonathon Carrie of Norfolk Hedges. In the space of about 45 minutes he talked us through the process of basket making from beginning to end. Jonathon uses brown willow that was cut when a year old and then dried. The willow he uses has to be soaked in water for a week before he needs it in order to be workable. It was fascinating to see a basket taking shape from a just few lengths of willow. The variety of shapes and sizes of baskets that Jonathon had brought with him was very impressive and all members present were amazed at his skill and also the clarity of his commentary.

Our December meeting will be our Christmas social when no doubt members will once again have the chance to look back on an eventful year.

Last month we welcomed Ann Bridges who gave us a talk on ‘Just a Sniff of a Flower’ which was the tale of her career (with flower arrangements) in floristy.

AND ST STORAGE ORAGE LTD LTD : 01692 016 500 501

Her family were gardeners and growers so she was keen from an early age. She worked and then managed several flower shops and had a spell in Canada, the highlight of which was doing the flowers on the Royal Yacht for Her Majesty the Queen Mother. In later years she worked at Easton College and on retirement became a NAFAS teacher, speaker and judge. She is also a judge for the RHS. We were in elevated company! The vote of thanks was given by Liz Crane.

We had two competitions this month. The first was the best wrapped box of chocolates, members placed coins on their favourites. The most popular was wrapped by Janice Pope. The chocolates are given to Halsey House and the monies to our charity this year, Nelson’s Journey.

The flower competition was for a buttonhole. The best in show was in the novice class and was won by Jane Smith. It included beautiful roses, daphne, hebe, hydranger and a little feather. Any bridegroom would be proud to wear it.

This month we are meeting in Cromer Community Hall on 9 December at 2pm when Lorraine Thompson will demonstrate on ‘Joyeaux Noel’. All visitors most welcome, do join us for a couple of hours and have a rest from your preparations.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are happy to advise all our supporters and friends that we raised ÂŁ1,512 at the Christmas Sale in St Benets Hall on 9th November. Many thanks to all those who came to support. A special thank you to our friends Andrea, Bev, Kim, Bren and Jenny who provided items to sell or raffle to raise money and also to everyone who came to help on the stalls. The cats with Irene are now in residence in their pens and loving the extra space they now have. Phoebe, one of the cats, also appreciates the lovely activity centre donated to the branch when one of our supporters moved.

Although Bassanio still has a problem he is having a rest from treatment at present to allow him a break from frequent visits to the vets, as this can sometimes prove stressful. We will keep you informed of his progress next time.

The pad for the pens, which are being moved from Briston, has now been put down and the tiles laid. We are now waiting to hear when the gentleman, who will be transferring them to their new site, will be available to do this. Our new lady cannot wait to get the pens in place so that she can have her first cats in care. She will be ably assisted by her daughter who is very interested in animal welfare. We hope to have more news on this next time. Over the past few years we have, on several occasions, taken kittens from an area where they have been allowed to breed without due thought for their welfare. Having taken in 3 litters this year, some of which had cat flu, and paid for over 20 cats to be neutered, people in the local community decided the situation had gone on too long and contacted the RSPCA. They have now taken over neutering the remaining cats and taken in some of the kittens, also with cat flu. Other kittens, found

in a different area of the village have been taken in by another local charity, and, again, most have had cat flu. Although there are still some to be caught here, the situation is now looking much better for the cats. Some of them, however, have migrated to Pearl, another one of our timid older kittens a neighbouring village but, here again, we have been paying for them to be neutered and returned to the site, where people are happy to continue to feed them and have shelter available. Three are due to go to the vets this week so we are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel, thanks to the ladies who have been involved in trapping them and getting them to the vets. We are always happy to help with feral colonies as it does help contain their size, plus interbreeding and health problems that can occur... If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

Soanes Signs sign up for Cromer RNLI

The service boards, which give details of the launches of both inshore and all weather lifeboats, have been updated onto new boards. For many years the rescue launches of the inshore lifeboats had not been updated, whilst only the launches up to 2010 of the all weather lifeboats were on display in the main boathouse.

Boyer’s Body and Service Centre coated them in special paint at no cost to Cromer RNLI. Without these contributions the project would never have been able to be completed.

Once this preparatory work had been completed, Derek Hinds – Chairman of RNLI Cromer and Ted Luckin RNLI Cromer BoatSteve preparing to add details to the boards house Officer, took the boards all our supporters and visitors to read and over to Steve Soanes. It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year … or is it?

There is an air of huge excitement as we gather together on this most special day of the Christmas season.

The goodwill, camaraderie, joy and sense of fun abound in such large quantities that it feels like you can reach out and grab a handful to share around. It’s Christmas Bag Pack Day at the Foodbank! If you have been following us you already know that our Foodbank Donors are quietly committed throughout the year to helping others in North Norfolk who, for reasons often beyond their control, need some short-term support to feed their families. It goes without saying that we could not do the work that we do to provide emergency food without their generous donations. But wow! At this time of year, year after year, our Foodbank Donors amaze us by surpassing all expectations with their generosity. Through them we can put together special Christmas bags containing lovely Christmas food treats

for our clients and which we all associate with our annual Christmas celebrations.

in the corner of the room ready for distribution to Foodbank clients during December.

So, back to the Bag Pack. Picture the scene on a Saturday in early December, a large group of our fabulous volunteers gather at our Cromer warehouse. Excitement and chatter increases as the Christmas treats are set out on long tables ready for packing and people get ready, keen to start this most rewarding of jobs in the Foodbank calendar.

This is teamwork at its very best supported by true acts of kindness from all our Foodbank donors and volunteers.

Why would they do this? Especially at a time of high expense for most people? Because these donors want to help our clients enjoy the Christmas that they would want for their families if they weren’t facing financial crises. And in our view, that is the essence of true Christmas spirit.

At the signal, packing begins. Each volunteer takes something from each group of Christmas treats so that every bag contains a selection of everything and nothing is missed out. Bags full to the brim with chocolate, sweets, Christmas cake and pudding, tinned meats, chutneys, nibbles and Christmas crackers begin to build

As the pile of bags grows and the work nears completion so too does the excitement of the volunteers. How many Christmas Bags have we packed this year? At our 2018 Christmas Bag Pack we filled 250 bags full of lovely Christmas food which was amazing. This year, we’re hoping to exceed that total so that during December we can include even more bags of Christmas goodies with our clients’ short term, emergency food supplies through each of our 7 centres in Aylsham (2), Cromer, Holt, North Walsham, Sheringham and Stalham.

Thank you and Merry Christmas from all of us to all of you. Please visit us at www.cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk or email us at info@cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk

Free car parking boost for Christmas shoppers offered by North Norfolk District Council - Town councils choose their two key dates Every town in North Norfolk has chosen two days of free parking over the festive period.

Holt – December 15 and 22 Sheringham – December 7 and 14

A council spokesman: “We are delighted to offer this service once again. It will provide economic benefit to high streets across North Norfolk and should encourage residents to shop locally.”

North Norfolk District Council has decided once again to waive the parking charges prior to Christmas, as in previous years. This year the free parking period will run on various dates between November 30 and December 22. The decision supports North Norfolk's businesses and traders by encouraging people to buy their Christmas gifts and supplies in their local towns. At a crucial time of year for the retail community, it is also a gesture of goodwill for the festive season in response to requests from businesses.

Wayne Martin from RAF Waddington, the leader of North Norfolk District Council, Brigadier Max Marriner, local Councillors and residents for a Memorial Ceremony in memory of three RAFVR Airmen, who sadly lost their lives when their damaged Hampden Bomber X3023 from RAF Waddington, crashed in the woods at Templewood on 20 November 1940 in the early hours of the morning.

Eddie Anderson gave the introduction and Air Commodore Jack Broughton the oration, followed by the laying of wreaths - David Russell on behalf of Mrs. Pat Le May, sister of Sgt Stanley Elliot, Radio Operator and Air Gunner RAFVR, Flt. Lt. Wayne Martin RAF Waddington, and Lorna Fish Chairman of Northrepps Royal British Legion. The Ceremony ended with the blessing given by Jack Broughton. No meetings in January or February but we return to our normal first Monday of the month meetings at our new venue Overstrand White Horse in March 2020.

Sheringham and District Philatelic Society

Sheringham and District Philatelic Society had members with puzzled faces on Monday 11 November. It was the annual Quiz Evening. Teams of four faced 55 questions set by quizmaster Andrew McCandlish. While some questions demanded knowledge of stamp collecting, others relied on general knowledge, logic or good guesswork. The emphasis was on fun, and multiple choice answers offered seemingly unlikely answers (with tongue firmly stuck in cheek) with one being surprisingly correct.

While there is always a team that outscores the rest, the results were very close and there was plenty of humour, good natured banter and laughter. That suggests that everyone comes away as a winner. Our Christmas buffet and competition is on 9 December starting at 7.30pm at West Runton Church Hall. Prospective members will be welcomed.

Wishing you and your family health, happiness, peace and prosperity this festive season.

We’re closed from 5.00pm on Monday 23rd December and we re-open at 9.00am on Thursday 2nd January 2020.

THE HISTORY AND TRADITIONS OF CHRISTMAS

The space left by a double-booked speaker was ably filled with not much notice by our own Jackie. She entertained us with so much interesting information that the afternoon flew by.

A Traditional Family-run Business where Quality Counts

The cringe-making ‘Xmas’ has a basis in fact. It should still be pronounced Christmas however as the X stands for the Greek letter chi which looks like an X and is pronounced kye. This is the first letter of Christ's name as it is spelt in Greek.

There are many traditions surrounding the Yule Log. It is thought to originate in Scandinavia where an entire tree was brought into a house to burn over the two months of the winter solstice. As families dragged their tree home, greetings were extended between them and a ceremony of music and dancing accompanied its arrival. As fireplaces became smaller the logs did too. Each region of Europe used its own native tree; France used cherry trees, England used oak, Scotland used birch for instance. The French also tended to sprinkle their log with wine so that it smelt nice whilst burning!

The popular carol Jingle Bells was the first carol to be broadcast from space! Two astronauts on Gemini 6 announced they had seen a UFO in December 1965 and then played the carol with harmonica and sleigh bells which they had smuggled into the spacecraft!

The Christingle service originated in Moravia in Germany in 1747. The minister gave children a candle with a red ribbon around it to symbolise Jesus being the light of the world. The custom was circulated by missionaries but only became a regular service in Britain in 1968. The service is used now to raise money for children's charities.

STONEHILL WAY, HOLT ROAD, CROMER NR27 9JW

There are several stories surrounding the Christmas tree as we know it today. Apart from the most accepted one of Prince Albert bringing the idea here from Germany when he married Queen Victoria, there are many others. Two of my favourites concern Martin Luther and the Scandinavian winter. Martin Luther, as the story goes, was so taken one evening by the sight of the stars shining through the pine forest on his way home one clear winter's night that he dug up a fir tree and decorated it so that his children could see what he had seen. In mediaeval Scandinavia, evergreen trees were considered to ward off evil spirits and so householders often brought one either inside the house or just up to the door, to keep the family safe during the long winter nights.

Two other types of tree used in the Christmas period were the Jesse tree and the Paradise Tree. The Jesse Tree is a mediaeval tradition and was a branch decorated with small items depicting stories from the Bible. It was used to explain the Bible to illiterate folk and can still be seen in some church windows today. The Paradise Tree was a large structure made from evergreen branches and decorated with apples and small white wafers to represent the Eucharist. This tree was paraded through towns and villages to advertise the commencement of the morality plays each year. Over time the wafers were replaced with tiny pastry shapes - stars, angels, hearts, flowers and bells.

After explaining the origins of some of our favourite carols, Jackie came to the end of her talk and we all enjoyed our refreshments not least Jackie herself!

Please come and join us in February. On the 12th we will be hearing a talk entitled ‘Keeping Safe from Scammers’ which is a very upto-the-minute subject. I'm sure you will find it interesting so please do come and see if you like us. All our meetings begin at 2 pm in the Sports Pavilion in Overstrand and cost just ÂŁ3 per visitor which includes refreshments. For further information please contact our Chairman, Jackie on 01263 720866 or our Secretary Chris on 01263 579433. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

I’m a panto star – get me out of here! Panto rehearsals have swung into action at Sheringham Little Theatre after the cast arrived at the seaside theatre to prepare for a special season.

It is the 10th anniversary of the venue staging its own professional pantomime. And an action-packed Dick Whittington and His Cat features a Victorian ‘steam punk’ style adventure taking Dick from Norfolk to London, with plenty of fun, song, dance, special effects – and even an ‘escape room’, where the audience helps solve the clues. The show opens on Saturday 7 December and combines a seven-strong professional cast of actors with 32 local children playing cats, dogs and rats.

As the cast met to begin rehearsals and see their costumes for the first time, director Nick Earnshaw, who is also playing the dame, Sarah the Cook, said “It is always daunting to start – with all the dance routines, songs, ‘slop scenes’ and fights to learn. But it is great having a core of experienced actors who know the venue and audience, and are like ‘mini directors’ on stage to help the other cast.” Rik Warren (Jonny the Dog) is the longest-serving, doing his sixth Sheringham panto, and Kyle Fraser (Dick Whittington) his fifth, but first in a title role.

They are joined by North Walsham’s Harry Williams (the Cat) and Lucy Connor (Fairy Bow Bells), who have both graduated from being chorus

children to professional senior roles.

Newcomers are Danniella Schindler as Alice Fitzwarren, who has just graduated from drama school and Kit Henson (Queen Rat) who has sung in a steam punk band at Alton Towers.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “This is a special anniversary year for us, and it is great to have lots of popular regulars joined by youngsters like Harry and Lucy who have grown up at this theatre and come back as professionals.” Tickets are selling well, and two extra school shows have been added this year due to demand, she added. Dick Whittington and His Cat runs from 7 December to 1 January. For tickets and information call 01263 822347, or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Crèches For Bangladesh – An RNLI Appeal

Last month, Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild held a very enjoyable fundraising curry evening, in conjunction with the Labone Indian Cuisine, Sheringham.

The RNLI's mission to prevent drowning extends to communities at risk around the world. This year there has been an online appeal for a prevention project in Bangladesh, called Crèches for Bangladesh.

Stu Thompson and Mike Keane holding a bottle float made by Structureflex to the International Team’s pattern

Tragically, an average of 40 children drown every single day in low-lying flood-prone Bangladesh, often in water very close to their homes. Their parents are in an impossible situation as they have to work, but cannot afford child care. The project provides day care facilities for children so that they are kept safe and away from the dangers of water whilst receiving important early childhood education.

CROMER

GARAGE DOORS

All Door Types Repaired. Cables-Springs-Rollers-Locks. Roller Garage Door Repairs. Up & Over Garage Doors. Automatic Garage Doors. Local Trusted Tradesman

Phase One of the project targeted drowning prevention through a combination of water safety education, swimming lessons and the opening of 400 children’s crèches. The next phase includes setting up and running a further 300 crèches over the next 3 years, working towards the target of ending preventable deaths of children under 5 by 2030.

During the evening, we saw video footage of the RNLI’s work in Bangladesh and we were shown examples of a flotation device, appropriate for the local environment, that has been designed to be made easily by re-using plastic bottles and fabric. The money raised on the evening was split between the RNLI Crèches for Bangladesh appeal and the restaurant’s charity, Abdu Salam Madrasha School, Bangladesh. Thanks to the generosity and support of everyone who attended, the RNLI appeal received £553.10.

MEMORY BOOK If you are aware of a community stalwart who has passed away during 2019, please let us know so that their name can be added to the Memory Book.

CROMER HONOURS The Cromer Town Council Award Scheme to recognise significant achievement by an individual, or group, enters its 22nd year. So far well over 100 people or groups have received the awards, which are presented by the Mayor of Cromer at the Annual Town Meeting. Every year one hears of work or a deed being done within our community which enhances the quality of life in our town or of its inhabitants. Much of this work by its very nature, goes largely unrecognized and may not be fully appreciated by the community at large. Who is eligible for an Award? Any person, young or old, and group or organisation, is eligible to be considered. The Council is looking towards anyone who has made a significant contribution to the quality of an individual, or wider community life in Cromer, during the last year. If you know someone, a group or organisation, who you feel should be considered for an honour, please contact the Town Council office for a nomination form which must be completed and returned to the Town Clerk. Copies of the nomination form will also be available from the Town Council website www.cromer-tc.gov.uk COMMUNITY PROJECT We are looking for volunteers to help make flowers for a forthcoming community event. The flower making sessions will be held at Sticky Earth Café every Tuesday morning. Please contact the Town Clerk for full details. Information on any meetings or matters arising can be obtained from the Town Clerk on 01263 512254.

The short mat indoor sessions are turning into a great battle at the top. There are only three points separating the five leaders, namely, Bob A, Philip E, John H, James P and Tony B. For the leading lady position Jackie P and Janice A are still inseparable.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club News from the Club House ...

On the green the fairly mild and wet weather has enabled the grass to continue growing which has meant the ‘green team’ remaining busy with swishing and mowing even at this late stage of the year.

Members are very welcome to enjoy our clubhouse facilities during the winter. We meet for a short mat bowls session every Wednesday afternoon, 1.45pm, and meet every Friday evening from 7pm. A coffee morning will be held on Saturday 7 December from 10am. Members, old and new, are welcome. If you are tempted to play next year, come and have a chat in our friendly clubhouse.

JORDAN TAKES TITLE IN FIVE match started off as might have been GAME THRILLER The expected with both players winning rallies and Just over 34 years ago Cromer squash player Jeff Morris tragically died on court and the Club decided to honour his memory by instigating a tournament for players aged 35 and over which was held for the first time in the autumn of 1985.Apart from a six year break around the turn of the century the tournament has been held every year since and this year was the thirty fourth anniversary of that first tournament. In the final on Friday Matthew Jordan, who became eligible to enter the tournament in January this year, and last year won the club championship, just came out on top in a pulsating final, narrowly beating John Baker 9-7 7-9 9-5 1-9 9-7. Baker first won the title in 2004 and again for a further four times between 2013 and 2017, as well as being runner up in 2008 and 2018 and now, playing in his eighth final in sixteen years, he had to settle for the runners up spot once again as Jordan held his nerve to take the decisive fifth game 9-7 to become the fourteenth different player to take the prestigious title.

picking up points before Jordan edged it 9-7. The second game followed a similar pattern but this time it was Baker who won the game 9-7 to draw level only for Jordan to edge ahead again as he took the third game 9-5. When Baker drew level for a second time by taking the fourth game 9-1 it did look as though he could go on to win an unprecedented sixth title but in the decisive fifth game it was the younger Jordan who took the last two vital points to win the game 9-7 and the match 3-2.

Baker, who has also won the club championship four times and the club veterans’ title three times, was gracious in defeat saying: “ It was a great match and I think we both played well and gave the large number of spectators a good game to watch. Thanks to all the spectators and to everybody who took part in the tournament” Technical Director Barry Starling, who once again was prevented by injury from entering the tournament, had to be content with presenting the trophies and said. “Over the years we have witnessed some tremendous finals and this was right up there with the best

Matthew Jordan (left) and John Baker of them. If John had been able to get to 8-8 in the final game we could have had a different result” He went on to pay tribute to both players saying that the match was high on quality and provided a terrific advertisement for age related squash.

In the semi finals Baker had a 3-0 victory over Séan Moore who recently reached the quarter finals of the annual club tournament while Jordan beat the tournament’s oldest entrant, John Chandler, in four games.
