Cromer Pier was once again the backdrop for the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day Firework Display. The display by Titanium Fireworks rounded off an afternoon of family entertainment including a fun run organised by North Norfolk Beach Runners and a torchlight procession. Many shops and cafes opened for the day to welcome visitors. At 5pm crowds waited in anticipation for the fireworks to begin â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and once again they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t disappoint! Local groups reap rewards of from North Norfolk District Council Arts & Culture Fund

More than £14,000 was awarded in November The latest round of North Norfolk District Council Arts & Culture Fund grants have been awarded supporting a wide range of groups.

The worthy local causes who benefited from the latest round of funding include: • Sir John Hurt Trust (£2,000) – towards Reminiscence Therapy to help those living with dementia and similar conditions, and to provide support for their carers.

• SWAN (Supporting Women Activities Network) (£1,900) – to run a range of therapy based classes, delivered through different tutors and visits to art galleries and exhibitions.

• Alfred Cohen Art Foundation (£2,500) – towards art workshops in North Norfolk with a special emphasis on the inclusion of young people • North Norfolk Chamber Opera (£2,000) – towards the cost of an 8 piece orchestra for 2 rehearsals and 3 performances of Orpheus in the Underworld by Offenbach • The Choir Worstead (£1,500) – towards support costs of the Choir’s performances of Dido and Aeneas

• About With Friends (£2,125) – towards 24 music sessions with About With Friends members with learning disabilities to help support their social, emotional and communication needs.

The North Norfolk District Council Arts & Culture Fund Panel will next meeting in March 2020. In order for complete applications to be considered by the Panel they will need to be submitted to the Council’s Health and Communities Team by Friday, 28th February 2020.

New horizons for COAST Arts Help shape our future at open meeting on Friday 31 January, 10.30am – 12pm at The Belfry Centre for Music & Arts in Overstrand

COAST Arts, an arts charity based in the Cromer and Sheringham area of North Norfolk, is holding an open meeting about its future on 31 January at The Belfry Centre for Music and Arts in Overstrand. The meeting will take place from 10.30am – 12pm.

Amanda Hensby, Secretary of COAST Arts, says “We have some ideas that we’d like to share, and we want to hear your ideas on how we can best support and contribute to a local vibrant arts scene.

Everyone is welcome and if you have an interest in any form of visual or performing art, or you have links within the community with any arts group or school, please come along.”

Every October since 2010 COAST Arts has organised an arts festival in and around Cromer and Sheringham as well as supporting and coordinating other arts events throughout the year. Malcolm

Birtwell, a trustee of the charity, says: “Over the years we’ve braved the storms and had all hands to the pumps. We’ve cast our nets wide, been fishers of all arts and always made it safely back to port, if a little battered at times.

After 10 years we want to do more, so the old ship is having a refit. We’re hoping to pick up some new crew in the different unexplored ports we intend to visit.”

The trustees of COAST Arts are holding this open meeting to gather more ideas for activities and events that can be staged throughout the year as well as during the autumn festival, to increase working in partnership with other groups to enable the charity to broaden its scope, and to recruit more individuals to contribute to COAST Arts’ work.

church by a feast, both visual and cake-based!

Once again, we will be hosting a series of art exhibitions. Woodgate Nursery and Foundry will be selling a selection of beautiful spring plants and hand-crafted metalwork. We will also be selling honey produced by bees from our Hazel Grove by local bee keepers Ken & Theresa Caves. Woodland crafts from Wrong’s Covert Woodland Restoration, unique glass gardens and terrariums by Moongazer Glass Gardens and willow work by SilverWood Studio will also be for sale.

The funds raised help to keep the church and churchyard in good order, available for community use and, most importantly, open as a place of worship for the people of the village and further afield. Last year the snowdrops attracted over 1200 visitors over four Sundays.

Our many volunteers come from outlying villages, Trunch, Southrepps, Northrepps and Mundsley as well as Thorpe Market.

Without them none of our fund-raising efforts would be possible at the church, especially the homemade cakes that have been so much in demand that we produced our own collection of recipes for sale.

A series of special services was held across the county to welcome the new Bishop. Rt Revd Graham Usher is the 72nd Bishop of Norwich.

RAF Big Band in Sheringham

To celebrate 70 years since the formation of the Sheringham & District Branch of the Royal Air Force Association, there will be a Big Band Concert by the Royal Air Force College Band on Saturday 29 February at St Peter’s Church in Sheringham. This Concert, held in the afternoon starting at 2.30pm, will be the College Band’s second visit to Sheringham, their Concert in 2018 was a sell-out and in fact it sold out within days of tickets being released. This internationally famous military Band, all members of which are serving in the Royal Air Force should not be missed.

All profits from this Concert will be donated to the RAF Association 2020 Wings Appeal, raising the vital funds needed to support serving and former RAF personnel and their families.

SHERINGHAM AND DISTRICT PHILATELIC SOCIETY

The last meeting of the Society’s 50th year took place on Monday 9 December. Members were invited to put up five sheets of philatelic material to be judged by all present that evening. The voting system, devised by Andrew McCandlish, gave each person three votes in order of their preference. This certainly made it easier to select one’s favourite three displays, instead of having to choose just one.

The prize for the best display for a new entrant was awarded to Tim Turner. However, Tim’s entry of Bermuda Key Type high value, King George VI also merited the trophy for the overall best display of the evening!

In 2nd place was Jim Farrell’s display of French stamps of 1946 to 1958, depicting historical figures and 19th century celebrities.

Tony Taylor presented the story of the Battle of Waterloo, as portrayed in stamps from a variety of countries with connections with that famous event.

The society’s chairman, Gerry Smith, took the fourth prize with stamps from Papua New Guinea from 1965 to 1969.

The evening ended with some excellent festive refreshments, provided by members, and a time to socialize and reflect at the end of a very successful and enjoyable year.

Brian Hannah

Sheringham lost a true gentleman with the passing of Brian Hannah on 29 December.

Brian, aged 74, represented Sheringham on North Norfolk District Council for 22 years, and throughout that time was a champion of community safety issues on the Council.

He was heavily involved in the successful road safety campaign for the three-way junction on the A148 Cromer to Holt road.

He was forced to step down from councillor duties in late 2019 due to poor health.

Brian was a valued and regular contributor to our magazines.

A Memorial Service is due to be held on Friday 17 January at 1.30pm at St Peters Church, Sheringham.

We extend our deepest condolences to his widow, Bev and all his family.

Popular Duo Return to Cromer

Family favourites Steve Hewlett and Arthur Lager returned to Cromer over the festive period.

In 2013 the popular duo appeared on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent. They narrowly missed out on the public vote in their audition but were later brought back as the judges’ wildcard to take part in the final.

They took a break from their successful run at the Thursford Spectacular Christmas Show to renew acquaintances at Ian Cutts’ sports shop IC Sports in the town.

They will both be back again in April when they are appearing at the Pavilion Theatre.

Missing a Parent

When a child loses a parent, through death, divorce or separation, the impact is often significant and long-lasting.

This is bad enough for a child whose loss is owing to the death of a parent, but what if one parent is preventing contact with the other post-separation? No matter how well intended a parent might consider this sort of intervention to be, it has been well researched that the consequences of such actions can have the opposite effect, and cause the child unnecessary suffering and long-term damage.

Not involving yourself in your child’s life, or being prevented from seeing your child by the other parent, can cause feelings of rejection and grief for your child. To make matters worse, the child may feel unable to grieve properly if they have been drawn into conflict.

Where one parent prevents the other from having a normal, positive relationship with

a child, it is known in family law proceedings as Hayes + Storr ‘parental alienation’ or ‘intractable hostility’ and is considered extremely damaging to the child and is increasingly being recognised as a form of child abuse.

In certain cases where parental alienation is established, the courts will increasingly consider transferring residency of the child to the alienated parent in order to reunify the child with that important missing link in their life, and address the emotional trauma they have suffered up to that point. The courts aim is to ensure that both children and adults are kept safe, and to enable children to maintain relationships with both parents where it is safe and in the child’s best interests to do so.

No matter how parents may feel about one another after a separation, the importance of keeping the child’s well-being as the main focus, cannot be understated. It should be remembered that it is the child’s right to have

a positive relationship with both his or her parents, and it is both parents’ responsibility to ensure this happens.

Two of the past three months turned out to be a lot less settled and wetter than predicted but overall 2019 didn’t stray much from predictions with no weather type hanging around for too long plus a few very warm days which we always expect. Rainfall was lower than average but the later stages of the year made up for the shortfall.

The next three months will have a mixed pressure pattern but no long periods of one type of weather. March could be the coldest of the three months.

I went with friends the other night, To a restaurant we know well.

THE STRAND CLUB'S CHRISTMAS PARTY

Two dozen members attended our popular party, each bearing food or a raffle prize.

Everyone also brought a wrapped present for our Secret Santa game to be played once our lunch was demolished.

Jackie read out a very funny alternative 12 days of Christmas with the recipient becoming increasingly angry at the chaos in his house from lords a'leaping and swans a'swimming!

Most entertaining. Tony then read a series of wry and unhelpful remarks made over Christmas - for example "That tree's still crooked, you know".

We were then able to tackle the lovely buffet supplied by members and committee. There was a wide variety of sweet and savoury and

Once the food was gone Jackie distributed the Secret Santa presents to each table and read out a short piece with plenty of lefts and rights in it. The parcels were passed around in time with this and the room became loud with laughter as Jackie read faster and faster. When it finally stopped our shoulders and chuckle muscles ached!

The raffle prizes were beautiful and included the flower table decorations Jackie had made.

At our December meeting our demonstrator was Lorraine Thompson, who was ‘lost in Cromer’ but arrived in time to give us a marvellous display entitled ‘Joyeaux Noel’. Her first arrangement was in a red wire lantern with holly, ivy, blue spruce, spray carnations and red chrysanthemums. Next we went off to the Woods with a crate covered with blue spruce and a lovely cork Yule log. An old wisteria stick was surrounded with holly (complete with berries), laurel, blue spruce, eucalyptus, tree ivy, wax flower, white hypericum berries, white carnations and roses and accompanied by a sparkly deer and a silver bird.

The oasis free design was on a large bamboo tray and inside a ring of ivy were covered jam jars. In each jar were silver sprayed grass a red spiral, ivy, holly and red amaryllis with a large candle in the centre – a lovely idea! She then placed in a gold basket, blue spruce, variegated holly,

miniature trees and more around the room. It looked very festive and welcoming - it was a job well done. Jackie's knitted nativity family completed the display. The whole afternoon went very well and was very much enjoyed by all those who came.

Our next meeting open to the public will be our talk on scammers and how to keep safe from them. This will take place at 2pm as usual in the Pavilion on 12 February. Please do come along and join us. We are a lively, friendly group who love to welcome visitors. Entrance is just £3 which covers light refreshments.

Her last design was in a stand covered with orange tulle with bells and lights, sprayed palm leaves, fatsia, peach hypericum, apricot chrysanthemums, gold bloom chrysanthemums and a wonderful cream orchid.

The vote of thanks was given by Margaret Mitchell.

Best wreath in our monthly competition was produced by Linda Rook. It was beautifully made and included fir, different berries, a red ribbon for hanging and a cute little robin.

Cromer Christmas Lights Long Service Award for Street collection permit issued to Mr T A Harding for Cromer town Royal British Legion centre from 4pm - 8pm on Saturday 30 November 2019 for the Cromer Christmas Lights Fund. member The total amount collected was £477.32.

On Thursday 5 November in the Parish Hall Cromer, the local branch of the Royal British Legion, Women’s Section, held their annual Christmas party for the members.

There were no expenses or payments incurred with this collection.

This is to say thank you to everyone who donated to the Cromer Christmas Lights collecting buckets on the switch-on night.

There were many events taking place over the switch on period and we are grateful to everyone who contributed to our funds, including excellent support from many retail outlets and businesses in the town.

We were entertained by Reverend Roger Billings with facts and myths of Christmas, peppered with humorous anecdotes of his ministry.

The town is very fortunate to have a group of around 30 volunteers who work in a variety of ways to achieve the wonderful display of lights and set pieces at Christmas every year. This takes a great deal of effort and organisation starting with an excellent fund raising group who arrange events spread over the whole year, plus technical and electrical expertise to ensure repairs and replacements to lights and equipment meet all legal standards. Then moving on to the limited period we are allowed to put up and test the lights, displays and trees, with traffic control, ladder work, electrical connections, health and safety, all requiring high levels of skill, lots of commitments in often very difficult weather conditions.

Just before the buffet was about to begin, Mrs Pam Angus was presented with a beautiful engraved glass bowl, from all members, to thank her for her many years of service to the British Legion, by helping raise money for the RBL Benevolent fund.

Pam was so surprised and accepted the gift with great pleasure.

The Branch will continue with their meetings once a month, and the next meeting will be on Thursday 6 February at Halsey House on Norwich Road, Cromer, starting at 2.30pm in the conservatory. This is the new meeting place throughout 2020.

We still need to raise seven to eight thousand pounds per year to cover all the costs, so please continue to support Cromer Christmas Lights.

Since Crackersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (who is doing well) arrival, Charlie, Humbug and little George have come into care.

George was found on 30 December at only 250g. He was the last admission of 2019. He had a heavy lungworm burden and is on medication. Due to the lungworm he isn't inclined to eat so, to encourage his appetite, I am syringe feeding him approximately three hourly, which is helping to keep his weight stabilised.

Response to treatment can be variable and recurrence very common so some kind of maintenance such as long-term use of sunscreen and lightening agents is often recommended. Most benign pigmentation and pigmented lesions however can be treated very successfully.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We ended the year with good news regarding Dave the little cat who had been missing since April and now have more good news for another lovely cat called Boris.

When walking their dog near woodland, a young couple found they were being followed by a cat who had a very sore eye and was looking quite thin. They obtained a cat basket and were checking with neighbours to see if they knew the cat or had seen it in the area recently.

One of their ports of call was Julie’s workplace, and at this point Julie became involved. As she had no kittens in care at present, she contacted us to see how we could help. It was agreed that she should take the cat home, check for a microchip and if there was one, to ring me so that I could check for an owner.

Once again, we found that the cat was chipped and was registered to a home in Suffolk. I rang the contact details and learnt that the cat had been staying with relations close by when it went missing in October.

Although not able to come straight away, the owners were only too happy to come and collect Boris and take him home to Suffolk. A picture of this very lucky cat was posted on our Facebook page by his owner and he has now been to the vets to be checked and to have his eye treated. Without the intervention of the couple concerned, who recognised that Boris was a genuine stray, he would still be out there so we thank them on Boris’s behalf.

The pens from Briston are now up and already have cats in residence with Caroline and Holly. We thank Caroline’s husband Ray for laying the base, tiling it and connecting it to the electricity supply. At present Octopussy is resident in one of the pens but this will not be for long as he will shortly be moving from the pen to take up permanent residence in the house. We are so pleased that this very special cat has finally

landed on his paws although I do believe the vet has advised he needs to watch his weight. The young cats in the other pen are two that came into care as very frightened older kittens who we knew would need lots of attention to ensure they adjusted to life with a family. They are now receiving this from both Caroline and Holly and already Izzie and Maddie are enjoying having a fuss and being stroked and Izzie will already let Holly pick her up for a cuddle.

These little cats originally came in with their four brothers two of which have already been rehomed. Boris - safe, warm and well fed at Although it was acceptable when Julie's while waiting for his owner they first arrived, as they were not to come and collect him fully grown, guidelines from the veterinary department at Head Office indicated they needed to be separated, as they would need more space and it also ensures they receive individual attention.

Mundesley Library Friends Dates for your New Diary

Mundesley Library Friends (MLF) built a reputation last year with a series of well attended and interesting talks at the library. We now have a programme of events for 2020 with talks by some old friends and some new faces - hopefully something to interest everybody.

The programme is listed below and further details will be available before each event via Mundesley library and council websites, Facebook or posters around the village.

Friday 17 January - Chris Brown (Fosters solicitors) gives a light hearted view of his work as a Solicitor Advocate defending cases of murder, manslaughter and serious fraud. He gives examples to show that all is not always as it seems!

Wednesday 19 February - Millicent Chapandra, a Zimbabwean musician and creative cultural artist, will lead a multicultural African music making workshop featuring drumming, singing, dancing, and movement. Come and learn how various African instruments are made, then have a go at playing them.

Friday 24 April - Blickling 1930s guestbook - Bunty Gotts returns with a talk highlighting 4 guests to Blickling at that time - three you will have heard of, one you may not!

Saturday 13 June - Wild Touch childrens' event - come to meet and learn about the animals that Wild Touch have saved.

Friday 4 October - Friends of Horsey Seals - with around 2000 seal pups born each year at this time the Friends will tell of the work that is involved caring for and protecting these mammals and informing the public who flock to see the spectacle each year.

Funds for each event are split between MLF and the speaker's chosen charity. Why not come along to one (or more) talks for an entertaining evening whilst supporting our library.

CEREMONIES AT NORTH LODGE We are currently receiving lots of booking for ceremonies for 2020 & 2021. Ceremonies can be held in our newly decorated chamber or in the clifftop garden. If you would like to visit our venue please give us a call to arrange an appointment.

CROMER CEMETERY Regular inspections are on-going and any unauthorised items will be removed and securely stored to await collection. The next inspection will take place shortly. Please be reminded that breakable items and those which emit light, sound or movement are not permitted in the cemetery. Full rules and regulations are displayed on the Town Council website and are available on request from the Town Council Office. If anyone has any questions please contact the Deputy Town Clerk.

CROMER POOR LANDS TRUST Cromer Poor Lands Trust has set up a scheme to assist Cromer residents who are in need, hardship or distress, to purchase a new electrical item, school uniform, a bicycle, tank of heating oil etc. The West Norwich Credit Union will offer the applicant a low-cost loan of up to £500 to cover the purchase price with a repayment term to suit the applicant. If the application is approved, once half the loan has been paid off, Cromer Poor Lands Trust will step in and pay the remaining balance. CROMER NEW YEAR’S DAY FIREWORKS A big thank you to our team of volunteers and all the individuals and organisations who helped, supported and attended the event on 01 January 2020. The final total raised at the event via donations and the sale of refreshments is not yet confirmed but is expected to exceed £11,000. A proportion of this will be paid out in grants to local charities (see below).

CROMER HONOURS The Cromer Town Council Award Scheme to recognise significant achievement by an individual, or group, enters its 22nd year. So far well over 100 people or groups have received the awards, which are presented by the Mayor of Cromer at the Annual Town Meeting. Every year one hears of work or a deed being done within our community which enhances the quality of life in our town or of its inhabitants. Much of this work by its very nature, goes largely unrecognized and may not be fully appreciated by the community at large. Who is eligible for an Award?

Any person, young or old, and group or organisation, is eligible to be considered.

The Council is looking towards anyone who has made a significant contribution to the quality of an individual, or wider community life in Cromer, during the last year. If you know someone, a group or organisation, who you feel should be considered for an honour, please contact the Town Council office for a nomination form which must be completed and returned to the Town Clerk. were well attended by nearly 40 members. Gay was the major winner in the bingo and thanks to John for the entertaining quizzes.

News from the Club House ...

Work on the green is at a minimum at this time of year which is just as well as half the team are incapacitated. We wish them a speedy recovery.

More work will start in February and at the moment we intend opening the green to play on Saturday 18th April.

The short mat season in the clubhouse re-commenced on Wednesday 8 January with all to play for in the league with Bob A leading on 36 points, John H 34 and Tony B 30. The leading lady is Janice A with 24 points. The tension will be increasing with the added incentive of the cup competition!

Until then members and newly interested ladies and gentlemen of all ages are very welcome to enjoy our clubhouse facilities during the winter. We meet for a short mat bowls session every Wednesday afternoon, 1.45pm, and meet every Friday evening from 7pm.

Our fixture secretary is busy organising league and friendly fixtures, so we need lots of players. Don’t worry what standard you are, as long as you are enthusiastic, we can accommodate you.

Christmas Golfers at The Links

Christmas was celebrated in style on the golf course at The Links in West Runton, with golfers dressing up in festive attire for the annual Christmas Cracker competition.

Over the years, golfers have been known for wearing some natty jumpers and bright trousers and this event showed that anything goes.

There was a full array of Christmas jumpers, plenty of Father Christmas outfits and hats and even the odd elf.

The reward for getting dressed up was being allowed to use two ‘mulligans’, which meant that when a shot went wrong, they didn’t have to count it and could try again.

The winner of the competition was Andrew Neave with 38 points, second was Irving Newton with 37 points and third was Ivor Collett on 36 points.

After playing golf, everyone gathered in the Hole-in-One Sports Bar and enjoyed some mince pies and exchanged presents.
