Your Help Needed - 75 Years On

May 2020 sees the 75th anniversary of VE Day, the day when Europe celebrated the end of the Second World War. It would be several weeks later before the war in the Far East ended and that too was an important day for Norfolk, with so many of those serving in the Norfolk Regiment having been involved in the conflict there.

To mark the VE Day commemoration in 2020 the early May Bank Holiday has been moved to the Friday of the first week of May rather than the Monday and in Cromer a major display, a waterfall of poppies will take place in the churchyard. Inside Cromer’s New Accessible Toilets

Cromer’s Visitor Centre has been fitted with Changing Places assisted accessible facilities North Norfolk District Council, with supplier Closomat, have installed a Changing Places assisted accessible toilet in the Cromer Visitors Centre building.

With Council investment, Cromer’s Visitors Centre now has one of the most advanced and accessible facilities available. The Changing Places toilet provides accessibility at the focal point for the whole North Norfolk area, making it more equipped for the increased tourist interest in the town. Project Support Officer Darren Payne explained that “Without such toilet facilities, tens of thousands of disabled people are deprived of enjoying numerous activities most of us take for granted, as they can’t find suitable toilet facilities. In worst case scenarios, they face having to be changed on the floor, or just not visit somewhere”

The Changing Places toilets provide users with

a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench and either a tracking or mobile hoist system. They are sufficiently spacious, with due care and attention paid towards the requirements of the user. Each toilet holds adequate space in the changing area for the user and up to two carers, with a centrally placed toilet (with room) either side and a screen or curtain to provide privacy. They are equipped with a non-slip floor, large waste bins for disposable pads and a wide tear-off paper roll to cover the benches, upholding cleanliness.

Cllr. Emma Spagnola said: “Having a Changing Places in Cromer is going to make such a difference to so many disabled adults, children and their families. Not only for local people but for tourists too, for example, I am aware of two families who are already planning their summer holidays here because this facility will make the town so much more accessible. Everyone is entitled to have this basic need met and I am very proud of NNDC for jumping on board and providing this. I am looking forward to see more rolled out across the District.”

which was handed down. If you had a great-grandfather who went off to war, can you ask your parents or uncles and aunts if they can help put some recollections together. In the nature of things, several of the young men and women who died had no direct descendants but we are hoping to gradually piece information together. We'd be particularly pleased to add photographs to the listings we already have.

Continued from front cover... The Town Council are behind the planning of this display and many volunteers have been busy over the last months preparing flowers for the event.

As part of the commemoration there is a major attempt to add further to the records held in the town, organised by the Friends of Cromer Museum. The Honour Roll in the church has the names of both service personnel and civilians killed in the conflict but in some instances very little has been recorded of John 'Jack' Lynn - captain their lives both before and of a Wellington bomber, during the war. In addition to lost over enemy territory those involved directly in the forces, Cromer, Sheringham and Great Yarmouth were very much front line towns, suffering from direct attacks from the air. The first air raid with casualties in Cromer took place before the Blitz in London. Consequently they have proportionally higher records of civilian deaths than many other places.

If you have memories or family accounts of those who died in the conflict, there is a chance to add to the stories that can be remembered on VE Day. If you are a senior member of the community, perhaps you have direct recollection of those who were lost. If you had a father, grandfather or uncle who served, do you have a story

You can see the current listings by going to www.cromerdictionary.co.uk and clicking on the Second World War tab on the left. You can then click on 'Roll of Honour' and see the listings and how to send in stories that you may be able to contribute. We already have quite a lot more to add, but there will be many more of personal stories that families can tell. Another way to RandW the corner of Church Street contribute is to drop and High Street after the 1942 raid. a note in at Cromer Museum, marked as The stick of bombs across the town 'Friends of Cromer centre narrowly missed the church, Museum'. with one either end of the building. THE STRAND CLUB

This month we welcomed Amber Osborn who is a community banker from NatWest. Her talk concerned the modern danger of scamming in its many forms. In this present year 43% of people over 60 are likely to become victims because they are more available at home to receive phone calls, emails and knocks on the door. But no-one is immune. From a single person in their home to huge billion pound companies everyone is likely to succumb. The ones we as private citizens should be most concerned about can and usually do start very small. It could be a phone call out of the blue – ‘Hello, is that Mrs Smith?’, ‘No, it's Mrs Jones’, ‘Oh, I'm sorry, wrong number. Your name and number will then be placed on what the criminals call a Suckers List where details can be sold on for as little as 15p to unscrupulous gangs. They are unfailingly polite and friendly and the next call will sound plausible – ‘Hello, Mrs Jones. I understand you are having trouble with your computer/have been in an accident’. The best treatment is simply to replace the phone without saying anything. If you try to talk them down they will become threatening in a cool, still friendly way to try to draw you in. ‘But if you don't do this/ring this number your computer will crash/your phone line will be disconnected’ effectively saying your lifelines to the outside world

will cease and you will become very vulnerable. Texting and emailing is also used. A bogus link will begin with http rather than https - the ‘s’ being the security symbol. Never call a quoted number on an email seemingly from your bank without ringing the number for the bank which you know and checking with them first. Unsolicited knocks on the door can be the most frightening. Someone could call and say they can see a loose roof tile, advise that you need a new roof and end up doing a terrible job and fleecing you of several thousand pounds. In the summer make sure that all doors and large windows are closed before you answer the front door to a stranger. Even if that person is wearing a recognised uniform but then goes on to ask for card details they will be scammers. Uniforms are easily available. Amber showed us a short video of a couple of doorstep scams. In the first a delivery man handed over a bunch of flowers and box of chocolates to an unsuspecting home owner. He then said he could only take cards to collect the £2.50 delivery charge as he wasn't allowed to carry cash. The householder left to fetch her card, leaving the door wide open, and allowed the man to put it into the machine. In doing all this she was vulnerable as her card details will have been saved in the machine. After the transaction the man sat in his van, milking her account of all that was in it in the space of just a few minutes. The second video showed a woman receiving a

phone call supposedly from her bank, asking her if she had just spent £15,000 with Harrods. She is very shocked and says she hasn't done so. He then asks her to write down a phone number and ring it, giving the reference number he also gives. He answers the phone to her when she calls. He arranges for a courier to come and collect the ‘compromised’ card and supply her with a replacement. The courier calls and takes the card but says the replacement will follow shortly. This sounds an easy scam to recognise but these gangs depend on making you feel at a loss and upset and therefore more likely to follow instructions. All in all Amber gave us a most interesting afternoon and a great deal of vital advice and information. I'm sure we all took a great deal from her talk. She managed to inject humour into a rather grim and unsettling subject and we are grateful to her for coming to see us. Our next meeting is our AGM but the following one (on 8 April) will include a talk by our own Jackie which is entitled ‘The Tale of Tom Hickathrift’ who apparently was known as the Wisbech Giant. All are welcome, as always. We charge just £3 at the door to include light refreshments and the meetings all start at 2 pm unless otherwise stated. We meet in the Pavilion in Overstrand and look forward to seeing you there. For further information please phone Jackie, Chairman, on 01263 720866 or Chris, Secretary, on 01263 579433.

Cromer Flower Club

Cromer Flower Club launched into 2020 with floral demonstrator David Wright. His chosen subject was 'A Tour of The Broads'. He had taken inspiration from his many cycling trips around our wonderful Broads and transferred them into an array of beautiful arrangements.

treatment with the wonderful Antirrhinum flowers taking centre stage. Filby in Bloom rounded off the trip with a low design of purple roses and pink anthuriums. Noreen Hawes eloquently expressed our thanks to David for such an inspiring demonstration. The Club held its own members’ competition titled 'Three Flowers & Foliage' which was won by Alison Morris in the Novice Class. Alison also took Best in Show.

We started with the Cricket Green at Ashmanhaugh then onto Ranworth Church with glorious sunflowers & yellow roses framing a clock face. Amongst the notices Horsey Mill Horsey Mill was the next given by Chairman pit stop captured in his Hazel were letters of interpretation of the Broads' banks. Journey charity. Also a thank you letter from Halsey House Cromer for the numerous decorated boxes of chocolates our members gave their residents for Christmas. This year the club will be fund raising for Macmillian Nurses.

Our next meeting is on 16 March at 7.20pm at Cromer Junior School. This will be a members evening where we will be creating our own environmentally friendly displays without using floral foam. The Ranworth Church competition title for that evening is 'Spring Fling' – again not using floral foam.

early in the year and ideally the flowers should be removed so that the plants become established more quickly but this seemed a strange piece of advice to members and they were reassured that this was not absolutely necessary. What is essential is plenty of water during dry spells as primroses don’t like drying out. Primroses are mainly pest free in gardens although slugs and snails can be a nuisance.

The speaker at our February meeting was Howard Lupton who owns a nursery near Kings Lynn that supplies most of the major seed companies with primrose seeds. He has been breeding primroses for over twenty years and is continually experimenting with his substantial collection of plants to find new varieties.

Primrose plants are either male or female and members were asked to see if they could tell which was which. Only one of the four groups set this task managed to correctly identify the males or thrums from the females or pins. Many members left with trays of primroses brought along by Mr Lupton so many Cromer gardens will be very colourful in the weeks ahead.

Mr Lupton trained at Askam Bryan College in Yorkshire with Alan Titchmarsh (whatever happened to him?). Most people recognise the yellow primroses seen widely in gardens and hedgerows but increasingly it is the highly coloured varieties on sale in garden centres that catch the eye today. Large and small flowered singles and doubles of almost any colour you care to mention are on sale. Even a black variety is available although on close inspection it is actually very dark purple. “Can-can”, “Innocence”, “Polar Express” “Firecracker” and “Sunburst” are varieties that were recommended to members. They need a sheltered spot if planted

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 11 March at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. The speaker is Tony Goode and he will be giving advice on ways to grow alpines for all year round effect. Visitors are welcome. Cost £2

Leave them to cool on the tray for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. They will crisp up as they cool. Store the cookies in an airtight tin and eat within 7 days.

It’s not long to go now until one of favourite occasions of the year, Mother’s Day, and what better to surprise the relevant person with than a batch of these wonderful biscuits (and she thought you couldn’t cook!)

The kitchen brigade often whip these up in a quiet moment and they are always very well received by the staff, though they don’t last very long…

If you are after a special Mother’s Day then we still have a couple of spaces left for Afternoon Tea on Sunday 22nd March – but book quickly because they are going fast. Or alternatively treat her to a lovely threecourse dinner; we are open every evening from 5pm. 01263 512412 to book!

Ingredients • 225g butter, softened • 150g caster sugar • 1 lemon, zest only • 250g plain flour • 100g ground almonds • 3 tsp ground cardamom or 1 heaped tsp cardamom seeds, ground in a pestle and mortar

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

On Tuesday 4 February, after a delicious lunch, Stuart Fidler, a Falklands veteran and a past President of the Probus Club of Norwich, gave a fascinating talk called ‘The Falklands War – My Personal Journey’. Stuart enjoyed a varied military career, starting in 1960 as a radio operator in the Royal Navy on the frigate HMS Rocket. After further postings on frigates and an aircraft carrier, he tired of ships and in 1965, after commando and parachute training, joined 148 Commando and served in Borneo. Four years later, Stuart became an air traffic controller, then moved on to Mobile Air Operations, setting up helicopter landing sites. In 1980, he started working at RAF Watton Eastern Radar, monitoring aircraft movements over Norfolk and the east coast. When the Falklands War erupted in 1982, Stuart was summoned to Yeovilton and on 12 May sailed from Southampton on the QE2, being the only naval officer with the 5th Infantry Brigade. Stuart took part in movements in and around the islands and was involved in the final attack on Stanley from Mount Tumbledown in extremely difficult conditions over rough terrain in freezing temperatures. Quotations by soldiers and the story of Lieutenant Lawrence, MC, who bravely stormed a machine gun nest during the Battle of Mount Tumbledown before being severely wounded by a sniper, reminded us of the courage and sacrifice involved in war. On behalf of the 33 members, one guest and one visitor present, our Chairman, Dave Williams, thanked Stuart for his interesting talk. Our next meeting at the Links Hotel in West Runton will be held on Tuesday 3 March when award-winning author Phyllida Scrivens will give a talk called ‘Escaping Hitler – Biography of Joe Stirling, Sheriff of Norwich’. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our monthly meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

North Norfolk Guide Dog Support Forum for visually impaired just gets bigger and better by working together with Vision Norfolk

The North Norfolk Support Forum is inclusive for sharing information for people who are blind or partially sighted (regardless of whether you are a service user of a guide dog), their families, friends, or carers.

People who want to or do volunteer for guide dogs, supporters and fund raisers.

During 2019 North Norfolk co-ordinators looked at how to increase the attendance of this meeting forum, and whilst moving forum from North Walsham to Cromer did help, we can still do more to help more people with sight loss.

Every Tuesday, Vision Norfolk holds a coffee morning for those with sight loss. Guide Dogs strategy ‘By My Side’ states Guide Dogs as an organisation want to go from supporting 250,000 people to 500,000 in five years. This does not mean providing 500,000 guide dogs!

Support can be in many different forms, using different services but also ensuring we effectively signpost to other organisations and have good relations with those organisations too. Attending groups and being part of something is a vital way to improve networking and own sense of well-being. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

Chris from Sheringham, visually impaired and guide dog owner plus volunteer forum coordinator, comments "We are delighted to announce, Vision Norfolk (formerly Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind - NNAB) have agreed to allow us to combine four of their coffee mornings with our Guide Dogs Support Forum allowing us to have a greater reach, and continue to attract more people with visual loss and engage varied speakers covering technical/educational support, and social activities for visually impaired friends and families".

Forum dates to add to your diaries are 17 March, 14 July and 10 November 10am to 1pm at Merchants Court in Cromer. Contact Chris Waller Chrisgwaller@googlemail.com 07568156766if you have any questions, or require more information, including becoming a volunteer supporting this leading charity for visually impaired or visit the Facebook page for North Norfolk Guide Dog Support Forum www.facebook.com/North-Norfolk-Guide-Dog-Forum11398032582731/?ref=bookmarks

Clinical Negligence – When is medical treatment negligent?

The value of clinical negligence claims against the NHS was reported this week as being in excess of ÂŁ80bn. A number of issues arise out of the reports, including the extent to which the NHS is learning from previous mistakes, defensive medicine and the standard of care provided to patients across all disciplines of medicine.

The issue of whether care provided to a patient is negligent or not will depend very much on the type of care provided.

Care, for these purposes, includes the interpretation of investigations, for example x-rays and blood samples, the provision of information regarding treatment options, including surgery and prescription drugs, as well as any surgery or non-invasive treatment provided.

negligence specialists, or to discuss your individual circumstances in further detail, contact our Client Relations Team today on 01263 823398 or email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk For more information on the clinical negligence services we offer, visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk

Tri Golf Success for Suffield Park Infant School!

Although the standards by which treatment will be judged by the Courts continue to evolve, there are a number of areas where the picture is becoming clearer.

The long-standing principles in the leading cases of Bolam and Bolitho still exist, but are applied more sparingly, for instance, the decision of a medical professional to follow one of a number of choices regarding a patient's care must still be one that a reasonable body of medical opinion would adopt and which stands up to logical scrutiny.

On Tuesday 4 February a selection of children from Suffield Park Infant and Nursery School took part in a KS1 Tri-Golf cluster event at Cromer Academy.

Clinicians are required to take reasonable care in interpreting the results of scans, blood and tissue samples, which is a slightly different standard. One notable development in recent years is the extent to which medical staff are required to inform patients about the risks associated with particular treatment or surgery. Courts have found that, even when surgery or treatment has been carried out non-negligently, but medical staff have given insufficient information about the risks of that treatment, a claim could succeed. Medical staff are under a greater duty to both consider the risks of treatment and inform patients of them in order for a valid informed consent to be given.

The children enjoyed putting their golf skills into action as they competed as a team against other children from local primary schools.

At the end of a fun but competitive afternoon, the children of Suffield Park Infant School celebrated their talent and teamwork coming in first place with an outstanding score of over 2000 points!

Clinical negligence claims are frequently complex, and it is important that anyone considering such a claim seeks advice at the earliest opportunity. To arrange an appointment with one of our clinical

The children were excited to be awarded with an individual medal and the winning trophy. Congratulations Suffield Park Infants School!

MENTAL HEALTH PROVISION Cromer residents can find out more about the range of mental health support activities available locally by visiting Merchants’ Place, the Community Resource and Learning Centre. Anyone starting up a local support group or other activity related to helping people’s mental health is encouraged to contact Rachel Sidell, the Manager, on 01263 519454. Rachel will offer to publicise this activity to a wider audience by placing it on the newly revised and expanded Norfolk Community Directory operated by Norfolk County Council (communitydirectory.norfolk.gov.uk). “In order to help vulnerable people in the community we need to know what provision there is locally. I am aware that there are numerous support groups, peer support groups and social groups that all have a different focus in the locality. Our aim is to build a knowledge base to enable us to enable people to access support swiftly”, (info@merchantsplace.co.uk).

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club

The short mat league season in the clubhouse continues with Bob A leading on 57 points. It is very competitive for 2nd place with John H and Keith P on 48, Tony B 47 and leading lady, Janice, on 46 points. The cup competition has seen victories in the 1st round for Keith P, Neil P, Jackie P and Brenda S.

News from the Club House ...

All league, friendly and ladies fixtures have been arranged, so there is a game for you, evening, afternoon and weekend, 75 fixtures in all. Don’t worry what standard you are - if you are enthusiastic, we can accommodate you. Subscriptions for the year have been held again at £65 for the 20+ weeks of the season. Just over £3 a week to play in all the arranged games and club competitions plus roll-ups 7 days a week, 10am to 12noon, 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm. Most equipment can be provided so you don’t have to incur further costs. Worth it just for the company and social membership is only £15. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Further work has begun on the green, spiking, mowing and moss killer application have left it looking very good, and at the moment we intend opening the green to play on Saturday 18 April. Until then members and newly interested ladies and gentlemen of all ages are very welcome to enjoy our clubhouse facilities on the Runton Road. We meet for a short mat bowls session every Wednesday afternoon, 1.45pm, and meet every Friday evening from 7pm.

The committee have embarked on a mission to improve the clubhouse over the next few months with new lounge chairs in the ‘bar’ area already in situ. Further enhancement will include added chair replacements, improvements in the gents’ toilets and painting wood preservative on the outside walls.

Details of fixtures, results, history, honours, and club news/photos can be accessed at cromermarramsbowlsclub.com or more details from Neil 01263 513901.

WILL WARREN BECOMES THE 31st PLAYER TO TAKE HANDICAP TITLE Cromer Squash Club hold four internal tournaments during the course of a season and the last one of these, the annual handicap tournament, traditionally takes place in the spring of each year just before the winter season of matches draws to an end.

The first tournament was held in 1981 and since then, apart from two years early in the millennium, players of all abilities have taken to the courts each year in a bid to lift the prestigious trophy which was originally presented by The Gateway Building Society.

The beauty of the handicap tournament is that players of all abilities, in theory at least, have an equal chance of lifting the trophy and this year two of the higher handicap players, Will Warren (+7) and James Bloom (+9) fought their way through to the final. Both players are relatively new members at the Cromer club so both had the opportunity to get their names on the honours board for the first time.

Under the handicapping system Bloom, who is currently in the third division of the club’s internal leagues, went into each game with a 4-0 lead and in a closely contested first game

he certainly needed this advantage as he just edged home 15-13. He raced into an 11-2 lead but Warren clawed his way back to 7-11 and then 12-12 before Bloom won three of the last four points to open up a one game lead.

The second game was finely balanced with both players having narrow leads at various times before, with the game finely balanced at 13-13, Warren won two important points to take the game 15-13 and draw level. The third game proved to be decisive as Warren recovered the handicap to lead 9-6 and although Bloom won four consecutive rallies to lead 10-9 the effort he expended seemed to take its toll as Warren regained the serve and went on to win the game 15-11.

The fourth game was very much one way traffic as Warren won the first seven points to lead 7-4 and from then on there was only going to be one winner as Warren went on to win the game 15-8 and the match 3-1 to become the thirty first different player to become handicap champion.

In the semi finals both players had made full use of the handicap system to beat ‘better’

Wednesday 4 March - 10.30am - Beeston Common to Pretty Corner - Grade 3 - Approx. 3 miles. A walk with moderate gradients on grass paths and minor roads. Meet at Priory Maze and Gardens CP, Cromer Rd, Sheringham, NR26 8SF. Tuesday 10 March - 10.30am - Mannington

players. Warren defeated another newcomer to the club, Tim Venes, in straight games while Bloom had a terrific match against the tournament’s oldest competitor and 2017 champion John Chandler eventually winning 15-8 15-4 13-15 12-15 15-12 as Chandler served out at 12-14 in the final game!

In the earlier rounds there had been some extremely close matches much to the satisfaction of the handicapping committee, not least of these was the quarter final match between Tim Venes and Technical Director, Barry Starling, which Venes won 13-15 15-14 15-14 15-14.

Trophies were presented to the two finalists by CLTSA Chairman, Kelvin Van Hasselt who said it was a pleasure to watch such an entertaining final after a hard week’s squash while Starling, said “It was good to see so many spectators, including non players, watching the final. Once again the handicapping committee got things right and it was good that two higher handicap players reached the final. Will played well, not only in the final itself but also in his earlier matches and he thoroughly deserved his success.” Estate Walk - Grade 3 - Approx 3.6 miles. A mainly flat walk on a mixture of field edges, woodland and farm tracks and minor roads. Meet at Mannington Hall. NR11 7BB. (£2 donation for parking).
