Friends at Five

Five years since the Friends of North Lodge Park were formed they will be revealing the latest news on the £200,000 ‘playful connection’ project to improve the park at their Annual General Meeting on 25 March.

Although the group first came together in October 2014, the Friends of North Lodge Park was formally constituted at its first Annual General Meeting on 4 March 2015.

Since then the Friends have: • re-opened and transformed the park café as Crepes & Cakes, staffed by volunteers who bake its delicious range of cakes. Crepes & Cakes was runner-up in EDP’s last ‘Best Norfolk Tea/Coffee shop’ contest • run two successful February half-term ice-skating events for over 3,000 skaters • staged musical events from brass bands to folk-rock and outdoor theatre performances, including Goldilocks, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Treasure Island, and The Importance of Being Earnest Eddie on Anderson Continued page 4...

Friends at Five

Continued from front cover... • arranged two Gardening Festivals, coinciding last May with the 90th anniversary of the opening of North Lodge Park. The third Gardening Festival will be on 16 May 2020.

The Friends’ first task was a major community consultation survey during 2015, receiving 747 responses highlighting what people wanted from their town centre park. Top of the list were well-maintained gardens, a community café, events for all ages, and improved facilities, especially children’s play opportunities.

In agreement with park owner North Norfolk District Council, volunteer gardeners set about improving the rose garden, clock garden, and central parts of the park with new planting including renovating the pergolas. The old park tea-room was redecorated and re-opened in summer 2015 by enthusiastic volunteers, and quickly established itself as a community hub.

Improving play opportunities for children proved more challenging. Plans were developed for a play area on the old bowling green, but this was unsuccessful. Working with independent landscape architects, a concept plan was created for the whole park, within which the £200,000 ‘playful connection’ scheme was launched, including a much-needed new bridge to the upper lawn and play opportunities. This will improve access, and encourage people to use the whole park,” says Barry Meadows, secretary of the Friends. “Inevitably it takes time to research, develop and get approval for such an ambitious scheme, and with no pot of council money we’ve had to raise the money to pay for it.”

The people of Cromer, and visitors who love the park too, have risen magnificently to the challenge. “Most of the funding has come from the community,” says Barry, “with a major contribution from café takings thanks to our customers and volunteer staff and bakers. There’s been a fantastic response to our funding appeals too, with over £25,000 raised from individual plaques for sponsored planks on the bridge, and from our books on the café cake recipes (Will You Marry Me?) and the history of the park since 1929.”

Successful grant applications have also contributed over £70,000 towards the project, and the expected start – and completion – dates for the work will be announced at this year’s Annual General Meeting on 25 March. Everyone is welcome to come along and find out the latest from 7.30pm at Cromer Community Hall, on Wednesday 25 March.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2020? 20 20 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an info ormed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2020 to come and meet me fa ace to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Northrepps 'Poppyland' Branch of The Royal British Legion

The meeting was very well attended and it was with great pleasure that we welcomed four new members. A 'huge thank you' goes out to everyone who supported our Table Top Sale on 29 February - the weather was far from kind to us, but we raised a total of £402.50.

The Society’s AGM took place on Monday 10 February and was well attended.

The committee were unanimously voted to continue their good work. A discussion on the merits of holding meetings in the afternoons during the winter period were discussed but it was decided to continue with evening meetings throughout the year.

Our Branch Programme is now under way, and preparations are in hand for Armed Forces Day at Northrepps Village Hall and Recreation Field for 27 June. This promises to be a great event, so please look out for much more publicity as we approach this date. We will be supporting Northrepps Village VE Day celebrations along with many other village events. Speakers are being arranged from The Cinnamon Trust and Stand Easy a Charity which helps veterans suffering from PTSD and associated symptoms.

A sale of philatelic items, which had been passed on to the Society, followed the business side of things and resulted in a donation of £32.25 to an Alzheimer’s charity and another £32.25 to Club funds.

The next meeting will be on 9 March, at the usual venue of West Runton Church Hall, at 7.30pm. Jim Farrell, the Society’s secretary, will present ‘Pages from my Albums’. If you would be interested in coming to this meeting, or finding out more about becoming a member, please contact Jerry on 01263 579529 or Jim on 01263 721043

Our next Branch Meeting will be on Monday 6 April at Overstrand White Horse 1900hours for 1950hours - why not come along to a 21st century branch, meet members and see what we are all about, and join us. A warm welcome awaits. For further information contact Lorna on 01263 579633.

OLEV is a Cross-Government team which aims to promote the use of electric vehicles. The grant funding helps councils to provide the infrastructure necessary to facilitate their introduction.

NNDC proposes to install EVCPs in Council owned car parks in Sheringham, Cromer, Holt, Fakenham, Wells and North Walsham. The EVCs use ‘GeniePoint’, a web-based system for managing vehicle charging; the website allows customers to top up credit and sends a text message when charging is complete.

The project aims to help meet the expected rise in demand for electric vehicles from around 250,000 currently to 6 million on the road by 2030. It has been identified that most Electric Vehicle users will charge their vehicles at home. By installing these facilities in areas where many nearby properties do not have their own off-street parking, the Council aims to provide charging points and make Electric Vehicles more accessible to both residents and visitors. Cllr Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “We are delighted to bring forward this new initiative which will see 34 Electric Vehicle Charge points introduced to our car parks across the District. This is just the first step on the Council’s path towards delivering our new ‘greener’ agenda. Whilst we are working to reduce our own Carbon footprints we want to help residents and visitors to play their part too.” MOTOR SERVICES LIMITED

Overstrand Evening WI

Members arrived to find a well-behaved male called Baxter, sniffing us out.

At six years of age, this Golden Labrador was a charming ambassador for The Snetterton Dogs Trust and had come along with his owner Paige Pope. We were soon given an enlightening romp through a multitude of fascinating facts and figures.

Founded in 1891 and then called The Canine Defence League, this institution campaigned for better dog welfare. By the outbreak of the Second World war, it had become well established and had several clinics up and running. In 1910, a dog license cost seven shilling and six pence, thirty seven and a half pence today.

Surplus hair gleaned from grooming long haired dogs was to become part of the war effort, when it was washed, carded and spun, to be used to be knitted into socks, gloves and scarves for grateful soldiers. The ethos was never to put a healthy dog down, but rather to find them suitable new homes and new lives, with good, ongoing support for new owners. For a variety of reasons, dogs come into their care and we learned that the average stay was 4 – 6 weeks. These lucky dogs are extremely well catered for by over 60 volunteers at the centre near Attleborough. This comprises glass fronted kennels flanking a wide thoroughfare set at an angle. This has been found to be less stressful for the dogs, as they can see who’s coming and as a result, are less snappy. The centre also has underfloor heating, sandpits and a 5 acre field with a copse for the inmates to enjoy.

This worthy registered charity now has over 20 rehoming centres and relies entirely on donations. A fun day last May raised an astonishing £17,000. Most felt sorry to see Baxter and Paige leave, with just the business part of the meeting remaining. It seems likely that we shall become an afternoon institute in Autumn which may help boost our numbers.

Our scrapbooks have been located but would benefit from some more photos of our special events from 2018 onwards.

Arrangements were made for our support of VE Day celebrations to be held on the sports field on Sunday May 10th before the meeting closed.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 18 March in the Parish Hall, The Londs, Overstrand. Cromer Times Issue 585 13th March 2020

A guide to minimally invasive facial cosmetic procedures Turn back time and see visible results. The time machine procedures.

Non surgical procedures provide impressive, natural looking results and have a beneficial effect on skin health. However if you’re already at a stage where the effects of ageing, sun-exposure or smoking has taken a toll then your only option may be to go under the knife. We offer gentle minimally invasive surgical procedure.

lifts the jaw line.

Neck lift. Here a tiny incision is made in the chin crease and underlying neck muscles are tightened. This can also be combined with neck liposuction or mini-facelift surgery.

Fat transfer. Also known as 3D facelift is gentle fat removal from body. The fat cells are then injected into the face. It provides a natural looking facelift and improves skin quality.

Laser facelift. This is a procedure to provide a tighter jawline and upper neck. A laser fibre is used to heat the under-layers of the skin and shrink the soft tissue allowing the skin to gently firm and lift up.

Ear lobe surgery. This is carried out to repair torn or stretched earlobes and also to reduce enlarged or elongated earlobes to provide natural contours.

Laser liposuction is the best option to get rid of double chin and excess fat in areas of chin, cheeks, neck and jowls. Again there is no knife involved and it is a minimally invasive procedure.

Of course we also offer minor surgical procedures such as removal of moles, cysts, lipomas etc. Call us on 01603 736487 or log on the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk

Minimally invasive facial cosmetic surgery may involve small incision mini brow lift, laser blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery. A lip lift is a small procedure that provides profound results or indeed a mini facelift carried out under local anaesthesia to remove excess facial and neck skin and tighten the underlying muscle layer to provide long lasting results.

Mini-brow lift. Two incisions on either side of forehead just inside the hair line lift the outer brows. This is an area that often sags with ageing and facial volume loss. A mini brow lift avoids a long scar. Often the hair growth will make the scar barely perceptible.

Blepharoplasty. This involves removal of excess upper eyelid skin to allow youthful look to the eyes. We use a precise laser beam to remove the skin minimising bleeding or bruising.

Lip lift. The upper lip lengthens and lips shrink due to loss of volume. If you do lip fillers they often provide an unnatural look. A better solution is to reduce the lip length allowing more of the red lip to show. We often combine this procedure with CO2 laser resurfacing to renew skin around the mouth.

One stitch facelift. It is a brief procedure. One small incision on either side of the face is used. The incision is hidden in the hair and

Contesting a Will

by Gerald Bloye, Chartered Legal Executive, Hayes + Storr

A family member, close friend, or loved one passes away and you find what you believe to be a clear error with their last Will in that it does not reflect the true intentions of the person making the Will.

What can you do about it? The starting point is that the law respects the wishes of the person who has died (“the testator”), even if the last Will did not accord with what family and friends were expecting. However if you suspect that the deceased’s real wishes have not been followed, or that the Will has not been made correctly, the Will may be invalid and you could mount a legal challenge.

The grounds for contesting a Will include: • Lack of testamentary capacity: this means that the testator making the Will was not of sound mind when the Will was created and signed. The testator must understand the full content of their estate and understand who they are choosing to include and exclude.

• Forgery and fraud: a Will may be contested if there are valid grounds to suggest that it has been forged in some way.

• Undue influence or coercion: there may be a claim if the evidence suggests that the testator had been coerced by other persons into including in their Will provisions that they would not otherwise have included.

• Failure to duly execute the Will: the rules for executing a Will are strict. The testator must sign their Will in the presence of at least two witnesses who are present at the time of signing. The witnesses must confirm that they have seen the Will signed by the testator. If there is evidence to suggest otherwise then the Will may be rendered invalid due to lack of due execution.

• The Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975: a claim can be made by a person such as a spouse, partner or child for whom adequate provision should have been made in the Will and was not.

Contesting a Will can be a complex process and expensive in terms of legal costs. It is important that you act as quickly as possible when deciding to contest a Will as stringent time limits may apply. In some cases, your solicitor may advise you to lodge a “caveat” which means that an official Grant of Probate cannot be issued and the estate, therefore, will not be distributed without your notification.

If you have reason to believe a Will is invalid and would like to obtain legal advice please contact Hayes + Storr on 01553 778900 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice.

Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.

Nature’s Tantrum

Listen to the howling wind, Listen to the rain. Listen to arthritic trees Creak as if in pain. This is Nature’s tantrum, Which roils o’er vale and hill, With angry clouds so full of rain That rivers overspill. Floods wreak havoc everywhere, Ruining peoples’ lives. Where can wildlife hide from storms? How do birds survive? So much damage done to those Caught up in such a storm, All we can do is hope, once past, Calm weather will return. Frances Wraight

Meat Free Magic

There’s nothing like home cooking, and when you eat that way habitually, it’s very hard to then eat highly processed food. There’s a myth that cooking from scratch means hours in the kitchen, shopping every day for fresh food, and surely, we are all far too busy to do that? But it is a myth‌getting a good stock of easy recipes under your belt is what you should aim for, to enable you to be able to whip up nutritious, wholesome dishes without too much time or prep. This one is great, as it uses ingredients that you’re either likely to have around anyway, like onions, garlic, celery and leeks, plus good store cupboard staples such as stock cubes, tinned lentils, tomato puree and marmite. Mushrooms are highly nutritious and very cheap. And don’t underestimate good old Bisto gravy granules (there are some processed foods that are worth having on the shelf) ‌ there’s a reason they’ve been around as long as they have! I use the Favourite flavour in the red round container, as they are vegetarian friendly and have the nicest taste, easily adding a wonderful layer of flavour to many dishes. Miso is another product that I never allow myself to run out of‌it’s a fermented food that is great for your gut health, and an absolute hero of flavour, imparting a wonderful umami depth to stews, casseroles and soups. It is easily obtainable in all good health food shops. All in all, this is a definite winner of a recipe – high veg and protein, low cost and easy to make. Make ahead of time and pop in the oven when you get home from work for a delicious, ‘meaty’ and nutritious home cooked end to your day.

then pop in the lentils. Add the thyme, marmite, tomato puree and stock cube, and add enough hot water to just cover the contents, stirring well. Allow to simmer for a few minutes, and then stir in your miso paste. Thicken with a little Bisto gravy granules or a little corn flour, until you have a good thick gravy. Turn into a deep oven proof dish. When potatoes are soft, drain well and mash with a good dollop of butter, salt and pepper and a little milk. Spoon the mash onto the top of the lentil mixture, taking care to cover it completely and seal the edges. Rough up the top with a fork and add a little more

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

When coming to view a cat Stephanie always gives people plenty of time to decide whether they would like to offer it a home. If they do decide this is not the cat for them, she asks them to please let her know as we often have other people waiting to view the cat and it could lose the opportunity of a new home if they do not do this. Similarly, when we have a space for a cat to come in and she calls to advise that we can now take their cat, could they please let her know if it has already been re-homed. Again, there will be other people on our waiting list who desperately need to get their cat into care. Politeness and good manners cost nothing.

Before our branch was set up both Stephanie and I volunteered for the Dereham Branch, initially at the home of Mrs Howard in Gressenhall, and then at the Adoption Centre in Longham. Mrs Howard was quite a character and many older people who have had cats from us over the years still remember her. One very good piece of advice she gave us was to never take in more cats than you can afford to look after properly and always have enough funds to pay for the unexpected bills that can occur. When our branch was set up, we were given a small amount of money, plus three cat pens, and were advised to start fund raising before the pens and cats arrived. The bases for the pens and cost of installing electricity had to be paid for by us so this was very sound advice and, having listened to Mrs Howard, we started fund raising straight away and have always had sufficient money to ensure the cats have all they need while in our care, We have continued to do so as the branch has grown and we have never had to worry where the money for the cat food and next veterinary bill would be coming from. We have also, as a result of money being left to the branch, been able to help cat owners on low income and people looking after feral colonies with neutering costs. By following Mrs Howard’s advice we know that our cats will always receive the very best care while with us.

Sharon has asked me to thank everyone who has donated goods for her to sell at High Hedges. Although she will be selling the goods already donated, she has advised that once these have been sold sales at her home will cease. She also asks that no more goods are brought to her to sell. She thanks everyone who has Izzy, timid young girl needs a new home purchased goods from without young children or dogs. She is happy her over the years, living with other cats. with 2019 being a particularly profitable year. However, she was disheartened when goods were taken without payment, especially as the money was being raised for the cats.

Stress free cats (and vets!)

Any one who has ever owned a cat will recognise how particular they can be with their likes and dislikes and the challenges this

often poses in caring for them.

Here at Toll Barn Vets we have always known how important specialised care is to all our patients including even the most mischievous of cats! We are extremely proud to have been awarded Gold Standard Feline Friendly Practice status for the 4th consecutive year by the International Society for Feline Medicine, a leading authority on feline care. We are delighted to be one of only 4 practices within the entire of Norfolk to achieve this award.

How does this help reduce stress for your cat? Being recognised as a Gold Standard Feline Friendly practice means we have been inspected and have demonstrated our high standard of care for cats. This includes having a separate waiting area complete with calming pheromone diffusers for worried cats with special areas to raise and cover cat baskets to help minimise stress. The hospital ward is a “cat only” area to prevent any stress caused by being able to see dogs and also has pheromone diffusers and large insulated kennels complete with hiding holes and varieties of food to keep cats comfortable during their stay. Our equipment and facilities for investigating disease and performing surgical procedures including techniques such as blood pressure monitoring, tonometry (measuring intraocular pressure), X-rays including dental x-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, CT scanner and in house laboratory have been rated at the highest level which means we can diagnose and treat cats quickly thus reducing the length of their stay with us.

Registered Veterinary Nurse Lorna Debbage is Toll Barn Vets Cat Advocate and has some top tips for bringing your cat to the vets.

Cats are independent and territorial animals. They dislike change and need to feel in control of their surroundings to feel secure. Cat Nema This can make a trip to the vets extremely stressful for the cat and it is important to make visits as stress free as possible. The first step is to make the carrier a positive experience. Encourage your cat to sleep and eat in or near it. Don’t just use it for vet visits as the carrier then becomes associated with a negative experience. Use bedding that smells of home and cover the carrier with a towel or blanket. Pheromone sprays can also be used to reduce stress. Once at the practice ensure the carrier is still covered and avoid placing it on the floor. Cat friendly practices should have raised stands designed for carriers. If the waiting room is busy or there is no separate cat waiting area it can be helpful to leave your cat in the car until the vet is ready to see you. It is important to give reassurance to your cat and take things slowly, a less stressful visit for your cat will also be a less stressful visit for yourself!

If you would like to book your free of charge healthcheck appointment or find out more about reducing the stress for your cat please give Toll Barn Vets a call on 01692 407126.

Update on the Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre

In honour of our recent award (and our love of feline patients) we are offering free of charge healthchecks with our qualified veterinary nurses for all our feline patients so that we can spot any signs of disease early and offer the best possible chance of successful treatment.

The Splash swimming pool in Sheringham will remain closed in the coming weeks as repair work is undertaken to damage caused by high winds.

Following a survey of the building, remedial work will also be carried out to ensure users can continue to enjoy Splash until Sheringham’s new pool opens in 2021.

Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “We apologise for the inconvenience this prolonged closure may cause to families and regular users of the swimming pool but our priority has to be the safety of the public and our staff.

“This is a building which is coming to the end of its life and is displaying many of the problems associated with ageing infrastructure. Whilst we want to keep it open as we build the new leisure centre, we must ensure it is safe and able to withstand all weathers including high winds.

Cllr Bütikofer continued “We are still at the stage of commissioning the work and so, as yet, we do not know exactly how long it will take. Clearly we are keen to ensure the closure is kept to a minimum.” Other services at Splash remain open as normal.

Steampunk charity ball comes to Norfolk in June

Celebrate 20 years of saving lives with East Anglian Air Ambulance and attend the Norfolk Show Ball on Friday 26 June at the Norfolk Showground.

Join East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) for an amazing evening of fine food and entertainment to mark the charity’s 20th anniversary. The event will celebrate the incredible community which has made 20 years of saving lives across East Anglia possible.

Inspired by the 19th-century industrial era, the ball theme is ‘Magnificent Men and Women and their flying machines’, encouraging guests to get creative with the dress code and add a steampunk twist to the normal black tie.

Bring it on Burgh

This exclusive event will offer guests the opportunity to be amongst the first to hear how the charity has evolved over the past 20 years and its future plans, as it gets closer to launching a 24/7 service by helicopter from Norwich. Tickets will include a drinks reception on the lawn, followed by a four-course dinner alongside charity staff, crew and supporters.

Phillipa Levy, Special Events Fundraiser, said “It’s a huge honour for the charity to have been selected as the beneficiary of the Norfolk Show Ball this year. Not only does the event help us to celebrate our 20th anniversary, but it also allows us to say thank you to the supporters

Family to open up private parkland to Norfolk runners Blur drummer and Norfolk County Councillor Dave Rowntree will open a new family fun run event on a private estate near Aylsham.

We are especially grateful to our headline sponsor, Norwich Accountancy Services, for their generous support towards the event. We hope to welcome guests from across the whole EAAA community which will help us to make it a really special occasion.”

Tickets cost £75 per person. Table bookings are also available for groups of 8 - 12 people.

For information and to book tickets, please visit www.eaaaball.co.uk

Bring It On Burgh, a 5km mixed-terrain route, will start in beautiful parkland which has never before been open to the public. Runners will pass through a picturesque unspoilt water meadow set against the backdrop of the River Bure, and past a stunning English Heritage monument.

The event in Burgh-next-Aylsham is the brainchild of Susie Anderson, the daughter of the landowner, who was inspired to organise the fundraiser after two people close to her were diagnosed with cancer. Dedicated to raising funds for Cancer Research UK, the run will finish in a specially set-up ‘village’ with live music, artisan food and drink, holistic treatments and a ‘Tree of Hope’ and remembrance. The bands booked are DGAS women’s acoustic African drumming group, Polymer 5, BroadBeat Choir and Spangle Pans.

“Cancer touches all of our lives in some form, be it personally, family member, friend or colleague,” says Susie. “My initial reaction when I found out that my cousin and best friend had both been diagnosed with cancer was that of shock and helplessness, but I got the seeds of an idea to try and put on an event to raise some money for Cancer Research UK and I love running, so I put the two together and it gathered pace from there.”

The event on Saturday 20 June, at Wood Lane, Burgh-Next-Aylsham, has already attracted support from local companies such as Barnwell Print and Quotatis Ltd, and tickets are on sale for £15 on the Bring It On Burgh website . The organisers are also seeking non-runner volunteers to marshal on the day.

Qualifications A to T: North Norfolk’s local businesses invited to learn The first T Level courses will begin in September more about Apprenticeships and T Levels 2020, and are available in the following fields:

North Norfolk District Council will hold a free T Level seminar ahead of the introduction of the new technical qualifications.

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is organising a free information event specifically for local businesses to introduce them to the new T Level technical qualification. There will also be information about the latest developments in apprenticeships, including funding.

The event is intended to help local businesses learn how they can benefit from industry placements and the range of support available to help recruit, train and upskill their workforce. It will host key speakers from local training providers, including Laura McLean, the T Level Coordinator at Norwich City

College and Alison Ward, the newly appointed New Anglia LEP Apprenticeship Levy Coordinator. There will be time for networking with local training providers including UTCN, the College of West Anglia, Nova Training and Poultec, with the opportunity to meet an advisor from the New Anglia Growth Hub to learn about funding to develop business.

T Levels are a new qualification designed to progress from GCSEs and will be equivalent to 3 A levels. The two-year courses have been developed with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for work. Students will be involved in a mixture of classroom learning and over 300 hours of ‘on-the-job’ experience in order to acquire the skills necessary for them to enter their chosen field of industry.

• digital production, design and development • design, surveying and planning • education

Cllr. Richard Kershaw, Portfolio holder for Economic Development and Employment said “The new T level qualification is designed to provide technical educational training relevant to the needs of business and industry. I believe this gives students a very sound platform to approach the world of work and will benefit businesses and students alike. I urge businesses to attend to find out more.”

The ‘Qualifications A to T’ workshop is on 1 April between 4pm and 6pm. You can register or ask for more information by contacting economic.growth@north-norfolk.gov.uk

Expect tracks from the likes of Orbital, Moby and Paul van New ‘chill-out DJ set’ performed by Jose Luis adds an extra hour to the programme at Blickling on 8 August

This summer’s Classic Ibiza will start with a new ‘chill-out DJ set’ performed by Jose Luis, a Caracas-born DJ who has been resident at some of the world’s biggest clubs, including Pacha Ibiza and Ministry of Sound London. The new set will add an extra hour to the programme, allowing the Blickling audience to enjoy the whole Classic Ibiza experience for even longer.

Bringing a mix of old-school house with a Latin flavour, Jose Luis will transport the crowd to one of the White Isle’s iconic chill-out bars, where they can relax and listen to ambient tunes, while enjoying their picnics and drinks in the idyllic outdoor setting of the Blickling estate. Following Jose Luis’ set, the Urban Soul Orchestra and vocalists will then take to the stage for the first time for the ‘sundowner set’ and the crowd

The concert then reaches a crescendo during the ‘dance set,’ when the orchestra and vocalists return to the stage as night falls and the grounds of Blickling turn into an alfresco nightclub with accompanying lasers. Expect tracks from the likes of The Prodigy and The Shapeshifters, to Faithless and Underworld. Council proposes more efficient alternative to plans for offshore wind developments would cause intrusive and wind connections in to National Grid avoidable impacts on the District. The letter, North Norfolk District Council is seeking to defend residents’ concerns over intrusive infrastructure works and their impact on the local environment associated with connecting offshore wind generated electricity in to the National Grid North Norfolk District Council, working in partnership with East Suffolk Council, have taken the initiative to express concerns about the impact of proposed onshore National Grid cable connections and wider implications for the District in a letter addressed to the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Under proposed plans, the North Norfolk and East Suffolk local authority areas will see approximately 40% of the UK’s offshore wind generation pass through their districts, having achieved landfall in their districts and then connecting with National Grid infrastructure

via onshore cable connections.

North Norfolk District Council has positively embraced offshore wind developments in the North Sea, welcoming the move towards increasing generating capacity in renewable energy and recognising the vital national importance of moving towards a zero-carbon economy by 2050 - having been the first council in Norfolk to declare a Climate Emergency, coupled with the positive implementation of a Green Agenda, environmental plans and renewable energy alternatives being at the forefront of future plans for north Norfolk.

However, the Council shares the concerns of local residents, tourism and agricultural businesses that the number of cable corridors and grid related infrastructures now being proposed by offshore

Art Exhibition by Samuel Thomas

penned to the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Energy, proposes that the Government explore the development of an Offshore Ring Main, to minimise the construction impacts on the coastal region in the short term and to rationalise grid connections for greater efficiency in the long term. An Offshore Ring Main would connect to the National Grid through one single cable connection, potentially saving the North Norfolk countryside from widespread infrastructure works delivered over many years.

Leader of the Council, Cllr. Sarah Bütikofer said “We are the guardians of this beautiful area, and we have an important role to play in balancing the needs of addressing the immediate climate threat, with protecting the North Norfolk countryside and community. We need to find smarter ways of working together for the benefit of all’’

At this exhibition you will see the five new original paintings inspired by views of the city alongside the artist’s wider collection of limited edition prints. The artist captures the spirit and soul of many Norfolk landscapes in his colourful paintings that radiate with beauty, charm and optimism.

The exhibition opens on 28 March – 20 April at The Giggly Goat at 20 Lower Goat Lane in Norwich to celebrate the 6th anniversary of the shop alongside the artist’s return to Norfolk.

The Norfolk-born artist Samuel Thomas explains further ‘I paint in a way that feeds the soul, I want to capture that feeling of elation and joy that makes us all feel alive. My painting style is diverse with elements of pop art alongside a nod toward the 1920 ‘come to the seaside’ rail posters whereas some of my artworks are textural and more in touch with reality, this makes the artworks contemporary yet timeless. I paint with one thing in mind and that is to wake people up to the realisation that….. ‘There is so much joy and freedom in our lives – sometimes we just need reminding of it’.

Feel uplifted at this vibrant exhibition titled ‘Norwich Spectrum’ where five new Norwich themed paintings will be unveiled. Samuel Thomas’ work is celebrated and collected nationally and internationally; and he makes his exciting return to Norfolk after being away for 3 years.

If you want to feel uplifted then come along - where you can meet the artist at the gallery on each Saturday during the exhibition.

The Gallant Gardener

At this time of the year, rhubarb is beginning to come into season, whether it is from the forcing houses of the growing triangle in Yorkshire or your garden. This vegetable has become much more popular and is very versatile. It originates from China and was named as it grew on the banks of the Volga River in Russia.

Stomach, liver and lung disorders, venereal disease and snake bites have all been treated with rhubarb, whose earliest recorded use, as powdered roots, date back to 2,700 BC. Despite its purgative, detoxifying qualities, rhubarb hasn’t always been eaten with such relish as it is today.

KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk

Rhubarb seeds first arrived in Europe in the 16th Century, when it had medicinal, rather than culinary value, a situation that lasted until the 18th Century, when its use as drug declined.

THE KITCHEN REFURBISHMENT SPECIALISTS

Eating the stalks probably arose as a way of utilizing rhubarb’s curative properties. Rhubarb from the garden in general, should not be eaten from July as the oxalic acid comes down into the stalks.

Surprisingly low in calories but high in calcium, potassium and healthy promoting fibre, rhubarb has recently been found to lower blood cholesterol. Rhubarb can be grown in containers or the garden and apart from a top dressing of good manure or general fertilizer it needs very little attention. After about five years it will need digging up, splitting and putting in a fresh position where it will get warmth and rain.

Slice the sponge cakes through the middle and cut the rhubarb into thin slices. Into a 2 pint ovenproof pie dish put a layer of sponge cake, half the rhubarb, sprinkle with half the sugar, cinnamon and rind and juice of the orange. Continue with another layer in the same way and finally add the water. Cover and cook at approx. 190C or gas mark 5 for 35 to 45 minutes until the rhubarb is tender. Whip egg whites stiffly, gradually add the sugar and fold in. Pile on top and bake a further 10-12 mins at the same temperature

Happy House Warming for Norfolk Homes Help for Norfolk residents to keep warm this winter

Broadland District Council, working in partnership with Norfolk Councils, is offering central heating system grants or advice for anyone struggling to heat their home in Norfolk. Fuel poor households without central heating could be eligible for help with bills or the installation of first-time central heating. Norfolk residents are encouraged to contact Norfolk Warm Homes on 01603 430103to find out if they qualify.

Another benefit of golf is that it can be played with family and friends of all ages and abilities.

Amanda, who has been Getting into Golf since 2018 said, “I have loved my golf lessons at the Links. Dominic is patient, also a good teacher. But more important, golf is fun and I have met new people in my group”.

The Norfolk Warm Homes Fund is not just for home owners - private landlords can get up to 75% off first time central heating systems helping tenants reduce their energy bills.

Golf can also fit into your lifestyle by playing 18 holes, 9 holes or by just going out for an hour.

Mike, who Got Back into Golf in 2014 said, “The Get into Golf package taught by Dominic at the Links has proved to be one of my best value investments. I joined a small friendly group of varying abilities in a supportive environment. Dominic also provided good follow on support which enabled me to get a handicap and this year I have progressed to being Senior Captain at the Links”.

Karen Strandoo, Warm Homes Programme Manager at Broadland District Council, said “Since the funding has been available, we have had nearly 550 applicants for first time central heating and helped over 900 households across Norfolk keep warm and reduce their energy bills but we know there are many more people that still need this help. If you would like help to install first time central heating please contact us at www.norfolkwarmhomes.org.uk and find out if you could be next."

So don’t let crazy golf or pitch and putt be your only experience of golf. Give golf a try with the Get into Golf programme at the Links. You’ll be putting, pitching and driving in no time and also getting out on the fairways.

The Warm Homes Fund is provided by National Grid and administered by Affordable Warmth Solutions CIC across England, Scotland and Wales. It is primarily designed to incentivise the installation of affordable heating solutions in fuel poor households that do not use mains gas as their primary heating fuel.

You can Get into Golf with 5 x 1 hour sessions for only £40. The next series starts weekly from Saturday 28 March at 10.30am at the Links Golf Club in West Runton. More dates available. To Get into Golf call Dominic on 01263 838383 or email golfpro@mackenziehotels.com.
