Notice from the Editor - Coronavirus and Magazine Deliveries

While we are continuing to deliver through letterboxes for the moment, it is possible that we will be advised not to do so in the future if we are advised that this will be detrimental to the well-being of our team of distributors or the households we deliver to. If such is the case we will make alternative arrangements at pick-up points as are available at the time. For those with good internet access, the magazines will be on line as usual at www.rosevillapublications.co.uk. As everyone is aware, at risk people (over 70s and those with underlying conditions) have been advised to minimize contact. To help reduce the possibility of contamination and to discourage people from making extra contact, the drop point at Cromer Gift Shop for leaving free ads or letters or articles for the magazines will no longer be used until the crisis passes. A large number of events have been cancelled or postponed in our area already and we will continue to put updates into the magazines

as best we can. Hopefully when the worst is over, we will be able to let you know revised dates for those that can be rescheduled. Items that cannot be emailed can be posted to Margaret White at Pond Cottage, Pit Street, Southrepps NR11 8UX for North Walsham Times, Cromer Times or Sheringham Independent or for the Holt Chronicle to Jo Haywood at 11 Cliff Road, Sheringham NR26 8BJ. We will limit our visits outside to the bare minimum as advised. We hope you stay safe during this difficult time, but if there is anything we can help with, please call us. Eric, Jo, Pete, Isaac, Margaret

Pavilion Theatre shows postponed

North Norfolk District Council can confirm shows due to take place at the Pavilion Theatre on Cromer Pier have been postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Working closely with Openwide Coastal Ltd, the external contractors who manage the theatre, the decision to has been taken in the interest of public health not to hold any of the scheduled shows or events at the Pavilion Theatre until 20th June 2020. This decision is taken in the light of the latest advice from Government on managing large gatherings, as the nation works to combat the spread of the virus. The Council will continue to work closely with the operator of the popular venue to secure its sustainability beyond this crisis. We will continue to monitor Government advice and remain in constant dialogue with Openwide about the theatre. Openwide Coastal Ltd. Has put out the following message to its loyal customers: “As of 2pm today Openwide Coastal Ltd. have taken the decision to reschedule all planned performances up to and including Friday 19th June. In addition the Vintage Sixties Festival, Folk on the Pier and Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society will be postponed until 2021. We will begin the process of contacting all affected customers starting from 9am on the 19th March. This will take some time to work through, so please be patient with us and our team whilst we work to contact everybody. In the meantime thank you from us all for your continued support and understanding. I hope that we will see you all again soon, in the meantime we hope that you and your families stay safe and stay positive.”

Cromer WI

The Acting President welcomed 36 members and three visitors at the March meeting, followed by a minute silence for a member who had died recently. Our speaker Mr Tim Bennett entertained members with extracts from the books by Gervase Phinn. A well-known Yorkshire author and speaker, Gervase Finn relates stories about his time as a school inspector. Members found the extracts of children’s conversations, delivered by Mr Bennett very amusing. It is hoped to have an outing to Wells in July, and a Strawberry Tea is planned for June. The competition was won by Yvonne Mileham, 2nd Brenda Boyd and 3rd Liz Holehouse. Visitors are welcome at our meetings on the second Thursday of the month apart from August, at 2pm in Cromer Community Hall in Garden Street. This may be cancelled due to the coronavirus.

Royal British Legion – Cromer & District Branch

The officers of the Cromer & District Branch of the Royal British Legion have met to discuss the current situation regarding the Corona Virus (COVID-19) in relation to their monthly branch meetings.

The secretary David Pritchard said “The officers have taken into account that we meet in Halsey House which is a Residential and Nursing Home. Along with that, we have some members who are quite elderly and some who do not enjoy the best of health”.

He added that “taking into account the current Government advice and a great deal of common sense, the Chairman, Hilary Cox MBE, the Treasurer Dr Mike Bossingham and myself have made the decision to cancel the April meeting due to take place on Monday 6 April”.

Branch Standard Bearer, Bethan Pritchard on parade

Chairman Hilary Cox added “This is really unfortunate as we have new members who were attending their first meeting along with all the exciting events and work the branch is involved with over the coming months but we must consider the residents of Halsey House

along with the members of the Branch”.

The May meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday 4 May at Halsey House and depending on the circumstances at the time, members will be advised accordingly.

Volunteers, Volunteers Volunteers!!

David Pritchard, Secretary

Do you feel you could help support our staff care for our communities’ vulnerable people? This will ideally suit younger people over the age of 18. You will not be required to undertake any personal care or medication support. Instead we will ask you to ensure that our service users have enough food and fluids and perhaps make a hot drink and have a chat.

We ask this in advance of the staff losses to self-isolation and Covid-19 we anticipate. You will still have to be DBS checked and if there is any attached fee to this, it will be undertaken at our cost. You will also have to be briefed and abide by our internal CoronaYirus protocols.

If you feel you can help us and have time spare, you can help in a rewarding and supportive way our

communities most vulnerable, please contact us on. 01263

We are planning a ‘in office briefing’ for anyone interested, the details of which we will pass on when you call. You can also find our contact details on our website www.elitecarecromer.co.uk

TONKA BEAN CRÈME BRÛLÉE

A dessert to literally die for (though don’t worry, ours is quite safe!)

Tonka beans, harvested ecologically from deep within the Amazon, are a hugely sought-after delicacy throughout the world for their unique, intense flavour. However they also contain a fair amount of coumarin, a toxin that can actually kill you if eaten in quantity. “As long as you don’t use a copious amount of it – obviously a copious amount could cause death – it really is delicious,” says Thomas Raquel, head pastry chef at the Michelin-starred Le Bernardin in New York. In fact it’s banned in the US, so M. Raquel must have a reliable ‘source’ from South America that we’ll say no more about…

Our chefs don’t have to smuggle tonka beans in from the windfarms after dark as they are quite legal in the UK. So all the wonderful flavours are available for you to try in Reis’ amazing crème brulee. We are open for dinner every night from 5-6pm (Early Evening menu) and 6 – 9.30pm (a la carte), although we are always busy so best to book your table on 01263 512412. And of course afternoon tea every day 2 – 4.30pm! Ingredients • 8 tonka beans • 8 egg yolks • 110g of caster sugar • 900ml of double cream • caster sugar for dusting

the skin off and chop them into pieces. 2. Whisk the yolks and sugar in a bowl. Bring the cream to the boil and pour it on the top of the yolk and sugar. Add the chopped tonka beans and infuse 10 minutes 3. Pass through 4 layers of muslin and skim. Fill up 12 cups or small ovenproof dishes with the mixture and place them on a tray 4. Cook for 40 to 50 minutes at 110⁰C/Gas mark 1/4: The crème brûlée are cooked when they are set like a soft jelly

At their March Meeting Roughton WI President Angela Newton presented a cheque for £3000 to Michael Ayden, Treasurer of Cromer and Community Hospital League of Friends, for their 2020 Cancer Unit Appeal. The money will be spent on a ‘Patients Recliner Couch’ in the new Unit. The League of Friends is trying to raise £350,000 to purchase highly specialised equipment and furniture for the new Unit.

RNLI Cromer Closure of boathouse, shop and museum

We regret to advise our friends, followers and supporters that until further notice Cromer’s lifeboat stations, shop and museum will be closed to visitors as will all the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeboat stations, shops, museums and visitor centres. Besides protecting the wellbeing of our volunteers, our staff and our visitors, this will enable us to preserve and continue with our lifesaving service. In addition, we will be cancelling all indoor and outdoor RNLI fundraising and other events including visits to schools. We will keep you informed via our website and social media accounts of any developments and will also provide updates on any lifesaving launches. Your support for the RNLI is much appreciated and we hope that you will understand why we have made these difficult decisions.

Northrepps 'Poppyland' Branch of The Royal British Legion

Our next Branch Meeting to be held at The White Horse, Overstrand, on Monday 6 April has been cancelled owing to the Coronavirus outbreak in our Country. We are hoping that the next meeting scheduled for the 11 May will go ahead. It is hoped that our very busy programme of events later this year will all take place. Please keep in touch via our Facebook page and members, please do not feel isolated, and for those of you who are unable to do this, pick up the telephone and contact us. For further infor-

In light of growing concerns over Coronovirus (COVID-19), North Norfolk District Council has taken the decision to make our face to face meetings with customer services appointment only at both our Cromer and Fakenham offices.

North Norfolk District Council is NOT closed but we have made the decision to restrict public access to our office buildings so as to minimise potential risk to staff and allow us to concentrate on resilience and responding to enquiries over the phone and web. We recognise the importance of continuing to deliver our services to residents and will do so through other channels where possible. Please also be aware that if you are displaying any symptoms of Coronovirus that we must ask you do not attempt to come into the offices and follow national guidance.

We are aware that the current world health situation is quite rightly causing a significant concern amongst our clients both in terms of their and their pet’s safety. These unprecedented times call for us all to work together for the good of our families, pets and communities. To this end we would like to reassure all our clients that we have already implemented contingency plans to help us to keep our patients, staff, clients and community safe and to help us ensure pets receive medication and care to the highest standard despite these challenges. These plans include waiting in the car for your appointment, a maximum of one person per pet entering the consultation room and use of hand sanitisers and gloves. Our plans also include use of telephone and video consultation where appropriate, medication postage and doorstep collection of medication. We also have plans in place for the veterinary care of patients whose owners are self-isolating. All these plans are already in place and are working well. Our staff have been split into groups who will not contact each other as we hope this will enable us to continue to offer our services, including our 24/7 emergency service, to our patients whilst minimising the risk to our staff and clients throughout this challenging period. We would urge all our clients to stay calm and heed government advice whilst also being reassured that we have contingency plans in place to care for your pets whilst keeping you and our staff as safe as possible despite the current challenges. We are committed to helping our local pet community as much as possible so if you have concerns please give us a call on 01692 407126 and we will help to the best of our abilities using all the means at our disposal.

CAN you CHANGE THE WORLD for someone in North Norfolk?

A friendly face, a kind word and a bit of encouragement takes little time but can transform someone’s day – maybe even their life – and yours!

CAN Connect are looking for people who could act as ‘social companions’ for people who need to a little help to engage with groups and activities in their local area, and who have been experiencing loneliness or isolation. They may be elderly, have suffered ill health or mobility issues, or just found it difficult to ‘get back out there’ after a tough time.

Cherry struggled with depression and this resulted in her spending little time out of the house - this was made more challenging by not being able to drive and being reliant on public transport in an area where it was often scarce. She recognised that she needed to do something positive to improve her physical and mental wellbeing and to get more out of life. CAN Connect introduced her to a volunteer, Lily, with whom she quickly established a good rapport, and, following a first trip out for a coffee (a big hurdle for Cherry but one which Lily’s presence helped her overcome) they both decided they’d like to go swimming. Again, this was a significant step for Cherry, but, having by now got to know and trust Lily, they ‘took the plunge’ and became members at the nearby swimming pool and can now go

Hedgehog Haven

whenever they feel like it! As well as the obvious benefits for Cherry, Lily too has gained a new friend with whom she enjoys chatting and spending time and is herself now enjoying doing something she might not otherwise have done!

To be a CAN Connect volunteer the most important qualification is…be yourself! If you’re friendly and easy-going, have a bit a time to spare and would gain great satisfaction from assisting someone else to broaden their horizons, then why not get inItouch with us? You could even find yourself making new friends and discovering new activities that you never knew were there!

For further details or to get involved please contact the North Norfolk Volunteer Hub on 01263 519454 or volhub@merchantsplace.co.uk or pop in and see us at Merchants’ Place, 16 Church Street, Cromer NR27 9ES (open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm)

On Friday 13 March I went to a bowling match and came home with little Chris!

He was found out during the day at Stalham. At only 250grms he must have been struggling for a long time seeking food just to keep himself alive. Since getting warm he is eating well so hopefully it will not be many weeks before he gets up to weight and can be released back into the wild.

Please note that the fundraising Bingo due to take place on 4 April has been postponed until later in the year.

Dementia

- What steps can we take to safeguard our loved ones?

What can we do to help a family member or close friend following a diagnosis of dementia? It is important to remember that if an individual loses, or starts to lose mental capacity a spouse, next of kin, or family member is not automatically appointed to legally deal with their affairs.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

If an individual is diagnosed with dementia, or other condition that means they are likely to require help and support in the future, they should consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney. This would allow the individual to appoint specific people they trust implicitly to help them, legally, manage their affairs. This can help safeguard against the person falling victim to financial abuse. Taking advice from a legal profession is essential here to ensure that the person fully understands the powers they are giving to their attorney and also considers who would be best in the role. We help individuals to explore whether a particular family member or friend is suitable. However, if the individual has not taken steps to make a Lasting Power of Attorney or is at the point where they no longer have sufficient mental capacity, the Court can appoint someone to act on the person's behalf as a Deputy.

Deputyship

If you are caring for an individual who has been diagnosed with dementia but they do not have sufficient understanding to make a Lasting Power of Attorney you may apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order. This enables a person who is appointed as Deputy by the court to make decisions on behalf of the person living with dementia in circumstances when the person is unable to make those decisions themselves. You can apply to be a person's Deputy if you are aged 18 or over. Such applicants tend to be close friends, relatives or legal professionals. The Court can appoint two or more Deputies for one person, if appropriate. The Court monitors the Deputy appointed and reviews annual accounts to ensure that the person's affairs are managed correctly. This helps to protect the person living with dementia, or other condition which may affect their mental capacity. The process of applying to become a person's Deputy can take much longer than if the person had taken steps to make a Lasting Power of Attorney while they were still able to. This is because the person is no longer able to willingly appoint those they trust to act on their behalf. Therefore, the Court requires much more information to be able to make a decision that would be in that person's best interests. Due to the nature of the application, and the

additional work involved, the process of applying to be a person's Deputy is invariably going to be more costly than if the person had made a Lasting Power of Attorney. However, if the person has reached the point where they can no longer make decisions on their own, and there is no Lasting Power of Attorney in place, there is little choice other than to go down this route. We aim to deal with such applications as quickly and cost efficiently as possible. We also ensure we make applicants aware of the projected timescales, and possible delays with the Court system, from the outset.

Summary

If you are aware that a family member or friend has been diagnosed with dementia we recommend you encourage them to seek legal advice at the earliest opportunity to ensure they get their affairs in order and make a Lasting Power of Attorney.

To arrange an appointment with one of our Lasting Power of Attorney specialists, or to discuss your individual circumstances in further detail, please contact our Client Relations Team today on 01263 823398 or email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk. Boat needing assistance calls Cromer RNLI

On Wednesday 11 March HM Coastguard tasked Cromer RNLI to investigate a 15 foot small boat appearing to need assistance.

At 10.30am Cromer’s all weather lifeboat ‘Lester’ were asked to investigate a small boat, approximately 8 miles off Cromer, which was thought to need assistance. On reaching the boat it was found there was no need for concern. Cromer’s lifeboat returned to station and was refuelled and made ready for its next service by 11.48am.

Cromer Lifeboat called to emergency whilst on training exercise

On Sunday 8 March, whilst out on a training exercise, Cromer’s all weather lifeboat ‘Lester’ received a radio call to attend to an emergency. At 10am a call was received from the UK Coastguard to attend to a vessel to pick up an ill crew member. The lifeboat then transferred the person to their boat and returned to shore. At 10.37am the ill person was transferred to other emergency services. Photo: Paul Russell Cromer’s RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew then continued with their training exercise.

The Committee have had no alternative but to close the Club until further notice.

This includes the Clubhouse, squash courts, table tennis room and the tennis courts. Due to public legal liability and lack of First Aiders on site this means that even the tennis courts will have to be closed. The Quiz night is therefore cancelled. The AGM is postponed until further notice and may be conducted in an alternative format.

In line with government advice we have cancelled our meetings for April and May while the Covid-19 epidemic is upon us which, looking back, made our March meeting even more significant than usual. Our speaker, Rosemary Ward, had stepped in at very short notice when the original speaker had to cancel and for this we are most grateful. Her topic was the same, namely the growing of alpines.

The title she gave to her talk – ‘Jewels in the Clouds’- points to most people’s idea of alpines as being specific to high altitudes but it is the case that they are found at sea level as well as mountainous regions. In fact most of the plants and shrubs we have in our gardens have alpine forms. Narcissus, crocuses, grape hyacinths and tulips have alpine varieties as well as salvias, orchids, dianthus and azaleas. Some low growing varieties of rhododendron have been bred in the UK and, perhaps confusingly, have been named after birds such as egret, ptarmigan and yellowhammer. Alpines will adapt to different situations so forms can be found which will do well in woodland, meadows and at higher altitudes.

Rosemary was born and brought up in Cromer, for a time living in North Lodge, so she was in no doubt as to the suitability of alpines to the growing conditions found on the North Norfolk coast. Whether our meetings in June and beyond will go ahead remains to be seen but it was nice that the final talk before the enforced break was so informative and was certainly much appreciated.
