Africa Week at Suffield Park Infant School

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

Children at Suffield Park Infant School have been finding out about Africa.

In the three reception classes they have been learning about the animals they might encounter there. They created animal masks, made African flags and discussed the climate and geography of the African continent.

They had a visit from a local dance teacher who helped them make African rhythms and dances, as well as listening to African folk tales from a storyteller.

"I know that Africa has the biggest desert in the world and the largest animal, the elephant" said one Reception child.

Year One children have enjoyed a sensory week of learning while finding out about the continent of Africa. They have enjoyed tasting African fruits - mango was a firm favourite, avocado got a less favoured response! African drumming was an exciting opportunity to explore rhythm.

Africa Week at Suffield Park Infant School

Continued from front cover...

Messy play opportunities included fun with the muddy hippos, digging for diamonds in sand and soil and creating African animals from clay. The children delighted in a varied and creative week.

Year Two children narrowed down their area of focus to look at the country of South Africa. They have been comparing South Africa to England and thinking about the similarities and differences between the two. The children have created a number of lovely pieces of artwork including clay masks, drawings of Protea flowers, paintings of South African landscapes and making animals using Model Magic.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable week and the children have learnt a lot about the continent of Africa and many of the countries within Africa. It has definitely been a valuable learning experience which supports many areas of the National Curriculum.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

Are they safe to eat? Most of us on an Autumn walk through woodland have seen wild mushrooms growing and asked this question. A great deal of light was shed on the subject by the guest speaker, Dr Tony Leech, at the Probus March luncheon meeting held at the Links Hotel West Runton.

In his talk on ‘Witches and Devils: the Darker Side of Fungi’…. (just a catchy title or something far more sinister and interesting?) Tony Leech was able to bring out both elements in a stimulating, at times serious, and yet highly amusing account of the many facets of what most of us simply call mushrooms and toadstools.

In his role as the Norfolk Fungus Recorder, no-one is better qualified to expound on the nature of fungi as food, medicine and entheogens and their dangers, including poisoning, infection or hallucination. Using a range of excellent illustrations, anecdotes and facts, he led us through the many dangers of picking and eating the most attractive looking specimens and advised that, on the whole and however boring, it was prudent to err on the side of caution and play safe by eating only those purchased at one’s trusted greengrocer.

Theatre Suppers Step into the Spotlight

A community theatre is serving up extra helpings of pre-show suppers to help feed its coffers as well as its customers. Showgoers at Sheringham Little Theatre are savouring meals as well as stage and screen performances at the seaside venue. Pre-show suppers have been added to the all-year-round programme at the charity-run community arts centre. They are proving a big hit with audiences - and are helping raise valuable income to support the theatre’s arts activities. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said the suppers were being extended to most evening performances this year after they were a huge success during last summer’s repertory drama season. “The suppers were a big hit, and by the end of the season our 40 covers were sold out. “They add to the visitor experience, are good value for money and make it less stressful as people can get a meal before the show if they come straight from work,” she added. Food also provided a valuable extra income stream supporting the theatre’s coffers during a time of cutbacks in grant funding. “Catering income helps us offer events all year round for visitors and the local community.” said Mrs Thompson.

The addition of homemade hot lunches, made by cook Elaine Eckett, to the daytime menu had doubled food takings.

Newcomer chef Norman Pottle will be creating the suppers, which start at 6pm or 6.30pm depending on the time of the evening event. He said menus would change according to the season from hearty pies and crumbles in winter to quiches and salads in summer. r Pottle, 64, from Bodham, has more than 40 years’ experience in catering including seven in the Royal Navy cooking on board ships including the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle, as well as being a chef on offshore rigs and a Cromer residential home. The keen theatregoer said he was looking forward to his new challenge. The two-course suppers cost £15.50, with after-dinner coffee and mints. Or there is a choice of a single course from the menu, which will include minute steak, seared fillet of salmon and a vegetable lasagne. Dessert choices include banoffee pie, Eaton mess and apple pie.

This year the suppers will be available from 2 April when the curtain goes up on a community youth production of Evita. The number of places available has been upped to 50 to cope with demand. Bookings must be made in advance.

CHOIRfest 2016: An evening of song from the choirs of North Norfolk

To celebrate the wealth of vocal music making in North Norfolk, Coast Arts are hosting an exciting evening of choir music in the famous Cromer Pavilion Pier Theatre on 9 April at 7.30pm. The evening will be hosted by Nick Conrad from BBC Radio Norfolk. Final preparations are under way for the 2016 Coast Arts CHOIRfest, which promises to be an amazing evening with over 120 singers performing in the famous Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre. “Six choirs from around the area are coming together for the evening,” said Tony Knight, musical director of Vocality, who is bringing the choirs together. “There are some great choirs around the area all working hard on their own music and each with an individual style; this is a chance for the choirs to work, learn and perform together. The evening will feature a range of classical and contemporary music, with each choir singing pieces on their own and all having fun singing pieces together.”

Barry Meadows from Coast Arts added “We don't think this has ever been done before – beautiful songs sung to the natural background music of the sea thundering beneath the theatre – with over 120 singers it really willbe a wonderful night of music”.

Nick Conrad from BBC Radio Norfolk, who will be hosting the evening, is really looking forward to the event. "I love Cromer Pier and getting the chance to compere at such an amazing evening in the Pavilion Theatre is a real privilege" Nick said, "all these choirs are working so hard to bring a real mix of vocal music together, it promises to be a super musical evening."

Thorpe Market – A Conservation Churchyard Explained

The last two years have seen concerted action to bring the churchyard back into the conservation fold. For those unaware of its importance, Norfolk Wildlife Trust consider it one of the most diverse, in terms of number of variety of plants, of all the churchyards they have surveyed in the Diocese. It also offers refuge to five out of six of the old meadow wildflowers - saxifrage, pignut, cowslip, ox-eye daisy and lady’s bedstraw. In June 2015 we hosted an oversubscribed Wildflower Identification day. Plans are in hand for a Butterfly Identification day in 2016.

Historically, the area would have been meadowland for hundreds of years, the only maintenance being a twice yearly scything. Yes, we have the records to show that someone was paid 10 shillings a time in the 1920s to do just that! The major change was the arrival of rotary power mowers in the 20th century. Thorpe Market only introduced intensive mowing in the 1980s, so most of the original vegetation has survived. We have a Francis Frith photograph in the church showing the front of the churchyard in the 1920s. The current conservation areas are cut in the late summer and the debris raked off. We have been fortunate in having the services of the Unpaid Work Unit to undertake this task for the last two years, work that needs young muscle! We strive to enhance the appearance of the conservation areas by strategic mowing around the margins - most-used paths kept very short, a buffer zone around the conservation areas maintained with the mower on a high cut, the conservation areas left to develop and flower and given a late summer cut. A sort of golf course mind-set-putting green, fairway and “rough”!

We are always seeking volunteers for around one hour a month to help Ryan and Sandy, who undertake the “putting green and fairway” cuts throughout the summer.

On Saturday 26 March at 10am there will be a working party to tidy after the winter storms, especially in the Hazel Grove. A couple of hours followed by soup in the kitchen will work wonders. Conservation-minded gardeners sought for this sociable activity. Enquiries to 01263 833252 or info@thorpemarket.org.uk

Yacht asks for Cromer RNLI help

The crew pagers sounded at 3.50pm on Thursday 10 March to a call from a 32 foot yacht - Summer Wind. The yacht with two persons on board had reported problems with the engine.

RNLI Cromer's all weather boat 'Lester' was soon in the water, heading 8 miles north of Cromer to assist. Luckily the sea state and weather conditions were calm

Once the problem was sorted with the help of the crew, the yacht was able to continue its journey to Hartlepool.

Lester returned to its station, was rehoused and made ready for its next call by 6pm.

Resurfacing of Cromer’s iconic promenade to begin next week

Final stage of town’s Coastal Protection Scheme gets underway The £8million pound Cromer Coast Protection Scheme which restarted in September last year is close to completion, with the final stage starting Monday 14 March.

Letters outlining access and parking arrangements have been given to residents, and copied to traders, RNLI, fishermen and all of the Emergency Services.

Cllr Tom Fitzpatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “This vital project will help protect Cromer for years to come. We’re in the final phase and we have worked hard to minimise the impact 12

on residents and businesses while ensuring the town can benefit from the Coast Protection Scheme when the summer season arrives.”

The surface removal will start on the east end by the Gangway and work westwards to finish at the Melbourne Slope. A parking area on the lower portion of the Gangway will be allocated for residents’ parking only and will only apply to the time when the Promenade is being resurfaced and closed to all traffic.

In ideal conditions, the surfacing works could be finished by the end of March but with poor weather likely to hamper progress, substantial completion is expected in early April.

STRAND CLUB AGM

Our AGM began with a swing with three new members joining our ranks. We are delighted to welcome them and hope they will enjoy the forthcoming year.

Jackie had decorated the tables with tiny baskets full of little Easter eggs which gave the Pavilion a very cheerful look. She is an excellent Chairman and thanks largely to her character and expertise our Club is going from strength to strength.

Jackie gave a very entertaining Chairman's report including her thanks to the committee for their help and support throughout 2015. She followed with a rundown of our programme last year and talked of the varied nature of it, and of the programme to come.

One of the highlights of 2015 was the visit of Happisburgh Owls and the personalities of the owls including Mumble who lived up to his name by burbling every time anyone spoke to him!

There has been one change in the officers for this current year. Jean has stepped down as Secretary and Chris has been elected to take her place.

Although Josie would also like to step down, having given several years to the Treasurer's position, there have been no volunteers to replace her so she has been re-elected. Josie then gave her Treasurers' report which showed a healthy bank balance and several new members joining during the year.

Our spring lunch will be on 11 May this year and Josie asked that members should bring their ÂŁ5.50 next month so that we know how many we will be catering for.

Glo then mentioned our trip to Blickling on 8 June. We are lucky to have secured places on a tour of the textile conservation department after two years of trying. The department limits each visit to a maximum of 25 people and our tickets will have to be sold on a first come, first

served basis. Please let Glo have your ÂŁ10 as soon as possible. Further details - for instance lunch and transport - will be decided at a later date.

We then welcomed Tony and Miriam who gave us a wonderful, emotional trip down memory lane with their songs. Miriam's voice soared throughout the Pavilion and thrilled us with its strength and beauty. She was expertly accompanied on keyboard by Tony who also reminisced and played a guessing game with us... "Who remembers this piece? Which programme did it belong to?" Great fun. Then it was time for tea with special AGM goodies baked by Josie, Glo and Chris.

As we now welcome men as full members, we can truly say that anyone is welcome to join our Club! Do come along and see how you like us. Our next meeting will be on 13 April when a member of Blickling's Textile Conservation Department will talk to us about their work. This should be fascinating and will ensure that we will enjoy our outing even more.

Entrance is ÂŁ1 for members and ÂŁ2 for non-members. This includes refreshments. Raffle tickets are available separately at every meeting. For further information please contact Glo Begley, programme co-ordinator, on 01263 576539.

Volunteers Needed for New Settling in Service

Community based volunteers are being sought to participate in a new ‘Settling in Service’ for patients being discharged from hospital.

This project is very much in its infancy and initially volunteers are being sought by the NNUH to help discharged patients who live alone to ‘settle’ back home with confidence – only short term help is needed, but we feel it is so beneficial, especially to those in outlying village communities.

Newly discharged hospital patients often feel very vulnerable when returning home, and unsure about coping with daily living‌ so a cup of tea, a listening ear and a hand of friendship can make a huge difference in the first couple of days, enabling them to pick up the threads of their normal routines with confidence once again. Volunteers will initially meet patients as they return home and then follow up with a second visit or telephone call the following day. Hopefully, the patient will then feel settled, however any concerns can be raised with a dedicated coordinator who will be able to refer on to community based assistance.

We are looking to recruit some caring and dedicated volunteers in the North Norfolk area who will be available to help on an ad hoc basis to make the service viable.

Win a Garden Makeover Woodgate Nursery, Alysham is appealing for garden lovers to enter their new competition to win a garden makeover, either for themselves or someone they think would greatly benefit, for example a vulnerable or elderly person, or just someone who really deserves to win such a great prize – maybe they help tirelessly within your community and deserve such a great gift as recognition for their hard work?

So shake off the winter chills and discover the fresh new plants of springtime and enter our new competition to win a garden makeover, which will help you or a loved one rediscover the delights of gardening. The prize includes a two hour consultation with award winning designer Dominique Rudd, £200 worth of plants from Woodgate Nursery and Afternoon Tea for 4 at Purdy’s Tea Room. Simply email (enquiries@woodgatenursery.co.uk) or post us pictures of an area of garden that needs a makeover, including a detailed reason of why you would like our help.

Packed full of inspiration for the garden, the annual show is a great day out for everyone including budding young gardeners who can have their face painted, compete in a fun Treasure Hunt.

Inspired by the Royal Horticulture Society’s (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show, four local garden designers will also be battling for visitors votes to be crowned the winner of the best garden design. This year we are delighted to have Dominque Rudd participating in the event, the winner of the Sandringham Flower show garden design competition in 2015.

Peter Purdy, founder of Woodgate Nursery, comments ‘The Garden Show is a fantastic

opportunity for gardening enthusiasts across Norfolk to come together, share tips with local people and businesses, and raise funds for a worthwhile, local charity.’ Purdy’s Tea Room will be serving a delicious range of homemade cakes, light lunches, ice creams, tea, coffee and soft drinks throughout the weekend.

Stuart Morton from Purdy’s Tea Room commented ‘A chance conversation with Dominique Rudd after she won gold at the Sandringham Flower show last year has meant we have been able to put together this great prize. Our initial conversation centered on our joint wish to help brighten up someone’s garden and day. I would like to see entries from people who have nominated someone else’s garden, just because they know it will bring great pleasure to the winner’.

For further information and entry details for the garden makeover competition visit www.woodgatenursery.co.uk or pop into Woodgate Nursery or Purdy’s Tea Room and pick up an entry form. CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY We were pleased to welcome two new members at our March meeting and they, along with over 30 others, had the pleasure of listening to Simon Harrap, a regular speaker at our monthly meetings. Simon and his wife own and run ‘Natural Surroundings’ on the Letheringset to Glandford road just outside Holt. Simon’s topic was gardening for wildlife. To make things clear from the start it is important to keep in mind what we mean by ‘wildlife’. Any plant or animal that comes into your garden of its own accord can be seen as ‘wildlife’.

rying visitors in late summer when fruit is in abundance. Some wild plants are also unwelcome, especially invasive weeds such as ground elder, goosegrass and stinging nettles but some weeds can be useful. Chickweed and hairy bittercress produce seeds that birds such as robins and dunnocks feed on.

Providing food and shelter is the best way to attract wildlife to your garden. Plants provide foliage, flowers and fruit. The foliage of some grasses will attract meadow brown butterflies, flowers provide nectar for many insects and fruit in the form of berries will bring birds to gardens in good numbers. Many plants Birds are the most obvious visitors to most gardens with berries, such as the crab apple, are very and to these can be added butterflies, hoverflies, ornamental so will provide food and be easy on the wasps and bees. Most of these are welcome visitors eye. If you don’t mind caterpillars in your garden as they aid pollination and wage war on garden pests then try planting honesty to encourage orange tip but few gardeners like to see caterpillars munching caterpillars, red valerian to encourage brimstone their way through the vegetable patch or wasps worcaterpillars and holly and ivy to attract holly blue caterpillars. It is particularly important to keep in mind the need to provide food at the beginning and end of the growing season We have two full-time positions available with good rates as this is when birds and insects find it hardof pay for outgoing, confident & knowledgeable people. est to keep up their en-

ergy levels. Comfrey, pulmonaria and hellebores are valuable in early spring while michaelmas daisy, aster and ivy will provide food well into autumn. Artificial food in the form of seeds and peanuts not only helps birds survive at crucial times such as when nesting or bringing up hungry broods or in bad weather but has led to changes in bird behaviour because of year round food. Compost heaps and bins afford shelter to slow worms and if you are very lucky grass snakes. Ponds encourage birds, frogs and toads, dragonflies and damselflies to the garden. Bog and pond plants such as marsh marigold, ragged robin, marsh cinquefoil and purple loosestrife will add colour and structure to any pond. Care needs to be taken when introducing trees and shrubs into the garden as height and spread can be a problem but silver birches, guelder rose and honeysuckle will do well in most gardens. Simon Harrap has a wealth of knowledge that us ordinary gardeners can only envy and no one went away disappointed at the end of the evening. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 13 April at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Our speaker is another regular at our meetings. Ian Roofe will be talking on ‘Pruning Techniques’ and he never fails to entertain. It is bound to be a practical as well as an informative evening. Visitors are welcome - £2, members free.

OVERSTRAND GARDENING CLUB

The Overstrand Gardening Club held their monthly meeting on Tuesday 1 March. The speaker was Charlotte Philcox and the illustrated talk was called ‘Enclosing Eden – A History of the Kitchen Garden’. Charlotte gave an insight into walled kitchen gardens and their history - the walled gardens, with their sections known as rooms, gave the gardeners the opportunity to grow a variety of fruit and vegetables in enclosed areas. The sections or rooms were used to grow various produce, for example in the north facing rooms Morello cherries and rhubarb could be grown, in the west and east facing sections apples and pears, and in the south facing rooms the more exotic fruit apricots, peaches and figs. The fruit trees were trained into espalier, fans and cordons and step overs. A number of walled gardens would have a hollow wall where fires could be lit to provide additional heat, which would protect the fruit against frosts, and helped with their ripening. The introduction of glasshouses and orangeries gave gardeners the opportunity to grow more exotic fruit such as melons and pineapples. Charlotte also said that the walled gardens included an area for the growing of flowers, these would then be used to decorate the home. The talk was very well received, and it was a pleasure to welcome Charlotte back to the club. The Gardening Club are organising a coach trip to Beth Chatto’s garden in Essex on Wednesday 15 June. The gardens began in 1960 from an overgrown wasteland with poor gravel soil, and boggy hollows. The gardens now are something very special, and show the art of planting at its best. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 5 April - the talk is called Garden Bugs ‘Cohabit, Conserve or Control’ and the speaker is Dr Ian Bedford from the John Innes Centre. The meeting starts at 2.30pm at Overstrand Parish Hall, The Londs. Further details of our Beth Chatto trip and forthcoming meetings contact Yvonne Ford on 01263 512350.

Plan to introduce on-street parking meters scrapped

A controversial plan to introduce on-street parking meters to Cromer and Sheringham should be stopped in its tracks.

Plans to bring in on-street parking have been suggested by Norfolk Parking Partnership, which is operated by Norfolk County Council.

A statement has been sent to officers of the Norfolk Parking Partnership Joint Committee setting out the district council’s concerns.

Cllr John Rest, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for assets said: “As Cabinet member I invited ward members in to talk through the county’s proposals; this is an issue of great concern to people in our district.

“At that meeting councillors were keen for all options to be explored to see if the costs of parking enforcement could be reduced or if parking could be enforced more locally.

“Our belief is that more time needs to be spent looking into the issue in far more detail and that if this approach had been adopted it would have given a full understanding of the options and opportunities.”

At that meeting councillors agreed to ask whether the Norfolk Parking Partnership Joint Committee had fully explored all the options for reducing the costs of parking enforcement before looking to raise additional funds from putting in parking meters.

The councillors present at the meeting were Cllr John Rest (Cabinet Member for Assets), Cllr Judy Oliver (Cabinet Member for Legal Services and Ward Member for Sheringham South) Cllr Nigel Pearce (Ward Member Suffield Park, Cromer) Cllr Richard Shepherd (Ward Member Sheringham South) and Cllr

John Lee (Ward Member Suffield Park, Cromer) Cllr Judy Oliver, Cabinet Member for Legal Services and Ward Member for Sheringham South added: “Any changes to the present car parking enforcement scheme must be carefully considered, evidence based and rational. A scheme that does not meet those criteria would be vulnerable to challenge by way of judicial review. We are keen to establish a way forward that is reasonable, fair and effective and we will consider all options to achieve that result. If the present proposal is pushed through we will look to challenge it in court.”

Cllr Nigel Pearce, Ward Member for Suffield Park, Cromer, added: “It feels like the on-street parking proposals would be robbing the north Norfolk coast – taking money out of the area and they would not bring any benefit to our two seaside towns.”

Parking Meter Issue for Sheringham and Cromer withdrawn

On the 18th of February the Norfolk Parking Partnership joint Committee brought forward a proposal to introduce Pay and Display meters in Sheringham, Cromer and Hunstanton, the reasoning behind this is to support the sustainability of On Street Civil Parking Enforcement in Norfolk.

At the moment these pay and display enforcement procedures only happen in Norwich, Kings Lynn and Gt Yarmouth.

Our local enforcement of parking on streets at the moment is done through This partnership which includes input from County Council and District Councils which includes North Norfolk District Council,(NNDC) And separately from this committee our district car parks in North Norfolk are run by NNDC.

To put it plainly the present on street enforcement process in Cromer and Sheringham is not paying for itself and the Partnership are having to seek other ways of providing the service which is essential in our towns.

Being made aware only a few days before the meeting of the Norfolk Parking Partnership (NPP), I arranged on the 15th of February for The 2 Town Councils and both Chambers to meet with officers of the County Council to understand what was happening, parking meters are something none of us wants but

the enforcement of our towns will need to be addressed ASAP.

Although the issue at the NPP committee was not carried forward at that time, being part of a Budget proposal it will be looked into again to take forward the years budget.

district Council are part of the Norfolk Partnership and have a Cabinet member at the table, it is just a pity North-Norfolk District Council but did not block this proposal before.

I am grateful to Cromer Town Council and Chamber for joining forces with Sheringham to block this unwelcome proposal, working together is the only way, the two towns are very alike with similar problems, long may that joint working continue.

Not waiting for this to happen I convened another meeting with the local bodies concerned on the 3rd of March, the outcome to this further meeting with Both town councils and Chamber's, NCC officers were asked to go Brian Hannah, County Member for Sheringham. back and ask NNDC to consider Again to look at the possibility of funding Cromer SOME THINGS WERE MADE FOR EACH OTHER« and Sheringham On Street enforcement, District council again refused, following this fortunately Norfolk Parking Partnership got the message and withdrew the proposal to put in Parking Meters and to look for another way.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Success at last! Boots has now been reunited with his family and they were delighted to see him after nearly two months. Because we knew that he was a much-loved member of the family that had recently moved to their new home, and were very anxious to be reunited with him, we had been putting food out to establish a routine and encourage him to visit us to gain his trust. Initially, he only visited at night, which is not the best time to try and catch him. However, once he realized that food would be available when he made his presence known, it didn’t take very long, after his family were informed that he was feeding, that they were able to finally reunite them. It does sometimes take a little time to achieve the required result. When putting him into the cat carrier it was obvious that he had not lost weight or condition while missing from home so other people must have been feeding him too. Because this was happening it took longer than usual to reunite Boots with his family. Please remember feeding a strange cat that has appeared in your garden may be encouraging it to leave home and cause a great deal of distress.

The number of cats in care has been limited recently as some essential maintenance has been needed on the pens at Dilham. Although several cats have been re-homed recently, including Boco, cat featured last time, there are lots of new cats arriving to fill the empty spaces and, with the kitten season just around the corner (although we do hope the Neutering Campaign will have helped to prevent Boots reunited with his very best friend, Alice so many unwanted kittens needing our help), there is no doubt that our waiting list will soon be back to normal.

STEPS are getting there ‌ junction at Felbrigg A148/B1436

After over eight years of campaigning by the Steps to Safety Group, acknowledgement of the need for a roundabout at this important, frustrating and dangerous junction has been made by Norfolk County Council Highways Dept.

The costing estimate is over ÂŁ500,000 but the County Council are unable to meet the entire costs from their own funds and are seeking help to cover the shortfall which, after pledges received from local Town and Parish Councils, the District Council, the National Trust and local businesses has now been reduced to ÂŁ42,000.

During the past two years surveys undertaken by the Steps team, both from the public and local businesses, showed overwhelming support for a roundabout at this junction. Your vehicles are often seen waiting at this

junction, costing money, help us to help you.

PLEDGE A WEDGE

We are not asking for money at this stage but pledges, which will only be called in when and if necessary. If you would like to see a roundabout at this junction, please consider pledging now. The easiest way is through our website www.felbriggroundabout.com which has a lot of information on the project or to me, sue.arnold@talktalk.net. Or send to me direct at Whinfell, Clipped Hedge Lane, Southrepps, Norwich NR11 8NS.

Please give this your urgent consideration. If we are unable to realise these additional funds, there is a real possibility the commitment from NCC will be withdrawn. We have until the end of April or face a very real prospect of losing this opportunity. ÂŁ42k ‌ surely this must be ‘do-able’.

‘Sandscaping’ option to protect coast from extreme weather

Work to look at improving the coastal defences to Bacton Gas Terminal and neighbouring villages is continuing.

One option which is being considered is to ‘sandscape’ the beach with high volumes of additional sand, in order to help protect the coast from extreme weather. It is thought this approach, trialled by the Dutch successfully, would be the most effective and it could be achieved either by putting sand on the beach periodically, or in one go.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “We are working with the Terminal operators to see what we can do together. This option has the potential to help buy time for our villages, potentially extending the life of the existing defences by 20 years giving people time to plan and adapt to the changing coastline.”

Norman Lamb MP said “Work on this scheme is of the utmost importance. It is clearly critical that Bacton Gas Terminal, a strategically important site, is protected against further coastal erosion. However, it is also essential that when works are carried out to protect the gas terminal, every opportunity is explored to seek to improve the coastal management situation for the adjacent villages of Bacton and Walcott.”

North Norfolk District Council, the operators of Bacton Gas Terminal and the Environment Agency are investigating this option and how it could be funded. Discussion is also underway with The Crown Estate which manages offshore sand resources. Government funding is not available for the defence of the Bacton Gas Terminal so the operators are looking at how they can fund the protection of the nationally important asset themselves.

A scheme to enhance the protection of the villages is potentially eligible for government funding; however, there remains an estimated shortfall in funds which could be significantly reduced if sand could be taken from a site offshore from Bacton. Further work is now underway to investigate any environmental impact of such a new licensed extraction area, before a view can be taken about whether that option could be considered further. It is understood that if funds cannot be found

for the wider public scheme then Bacton Gas Terminal operators would have to press ahead with the scheme for the Terminal only.

Recently Asked Question and Answers on Family Law By Neale Grearson, Head of Family Department at Clapham & Collinge Solicitors

My estranged husband has transferred all of his assets to his brother. Will this affect our Divorce? There is an obligation on husbands and wives when they separate or divorce to be open and honest with each other and to act appropriately. If he has transferred assets in an attempt to deplete your financial entitlement the Court has the power to overturn such a transaction and to take that into account as part of a Divorce settlement.

Are maintenance Orders linked to inflation? How could they be increased? Maintenance Orders for an ex-husband or ex-wife are not automatically linked to inflation. The Order dealing with the maintenance can include a provision linked to the Retail Price Index but that is unusual. Maintenance can be increased by agreement or an Order can be varied if there is a change in circumstances so an Application can be made to a Judge. This is in relation to maintenance for an ex-wife or ex-husband but maintenance for children can only be dealt with by the Child Maintenance Service if agreement is not reached as the Courts have only limited powers over and above what the Child Maintenance Service can assess the level of maintenance at.

My wife has been violent to me in the past. I have been told to get a Civil Injunction but what is it and what does it do? An application can be made for an injunction which is a Court Order to protect a victim of domestic violence. Any violence is a criminal offence and can be reported to the police for criminal action to be taken. This should always be the first step as the police may be able to take the quickest action and may be able to put measures in place for your protection such as ensuring your address is noted on their system for a quick response, installing panic alarms in your property, and prosecuting any offences via the criminal justice

Cromer Times 490 March 26th 2016

system, which can include obtaining a Restraining Order against the person concerned. In the alternative, or alongside any action the police may take, a civil injunction, such as a Non-molestation Order, may be required. Much like a Restraining Order, which is obtained through the criminal courts following a prosecution, a Non-molestation Order can provide for measures that protect you such as prohibiting your partner from contacting you or coming near you or your property. Once a Nonmolestation Order is in place, its breach can be enforced as a criminal offence by the police or through the civil courts as a contempt of court. If I have joint custody or sole custody of our daughter would I still have to pay my ex-wife maintenance? The Child Maintenance Service makes assessments in relation to the payment of maintenance to children if parents cannot agree. Whether maintenance would have to be paid does depend on the particular circumstances and the amount of time that a child spends with each parent.

What is a Financial Clean Break Order and what does it do? Can it be challenged in the future like in these Court cases I see? A Financial Clean Break means that a husband and wife will not be able to make any future financial claims against the other after their Divorce. In particular it would normally include the provision of all claims for maintenance, capital and against the Estate of the deceased on the death of one of them. It is rare for a Court Order to be challenged and there would need to be a good reason for this. There have recently been a number of high profile cases where Court Orders have been re-opened because of the lack of honesty and financial disclosure given by a husband. Usually however a settlement that is agreed and contained in a Consent Order which adds provision for a Clean

Break is not capable of being challenged.

My Dad only lent me the deposit for our flat if I make my fiancée sign a pre-nup. What if he won't? A Pre-Nuptial Agreement can set out the terms that are accepted should apply if there were to be a Divorce. Very often pressure is exerted from members of family that give or lend money to a son or daughter if they are concerned about what would happen on a subsequent Divorce. Signing a Pre-Nuptial Agreement is entirely voluntary and cannot be forced on anyone. My estranged husband wants to come back to try again. My cousin told me about post-nups in the USA – what are they? A Post-Nuptial Agreement is similar to a Pre-Nuptial Agreement but is entered into after a marriage. They have generally been accepted in this country as being even more enforceable than a Pre-Nuptial Agreement. They are intended to set out what a husband and wife intend should happen if their marriage breaks down and there is a Divorce. Pre-Nuptial Agreements and PostNuptial Agreements are becoming more common in this country and are now widely accepted by the Court as binding so long as there are safeguards in place to ensure that they are fair. It is now no longer left to the rich and famous to have such agreements.

Paintings for Paddocks

Collectors can purchase unique pieces of art while raising vital funds for Redwings Horse Sanctuary as the charity’s annual art sale returns. Starting in April, Redwings’ Aylsham Visitor Centre in North Norfolk will be opening its doors again to art enthusiasts and Sanctuary supporters who will be able to peruse and buy pieces from its collection of donated artwork. From reproduction prints of well-known paintings and classically framed works depicting traditional countryside scenes, to modern colourful pieces by amateurs and professionals alike on an eclectic range of subjects, there’s something for everyone at this year’s event. There will also be a wonderful collection of sketches, watercolours and acrylics created for Redwings by its supporters, including a beautiful portrait of one of the charity’s Adoption Stars, rare-breed Poitou donkey Arya. Prices of artwork will range from £5 to £120, so there will also be something to suit every budget, plus every penny raised from the art sale will go directly towards the care of Redwings’ 1500 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. Indeed, while attending the art sale, visitors will be able to find out more about the work of the charity in rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming horses in need, as well as meet the horsey and donkey

residents in person.Redwings Aylsham is hoping to raise as much as possible from the art sale to continue vital development work – that is, the building of more paddocks to increase the charity’s capacity to rescue more horses.

Anne Galloway, Redwings’ Gifts in Kind Manager, said “We had a fantastic response to last year’s sale with our generous buyers helping to raise over £1,200! That’s the equivalent of 40 paddocks being reseeded with grass, 120 stables being supplied with comfy bedding and 24 veterinary health checks. The money raised can really make a difference so we hope as many people as possible will come along to this year’s art sale and make this the biggest one yet!”

welcomes further donations of artwork to exhibit and sell at the Aylsham event. Donated pieces can be accepted up until Tuesday 26 April. For more information and to donate an item, please contact Anne Galloway by emailing agalloway@redwings.co.uk or calling 01508 481070. Redwing’s art sale takes place on Friday 29 April to Monday 2 May and on the following weekend Friday 6 to Monday 9 May, 10am to 4pm, at Redwings Aylsham, Spa Lane, Aylsham, Norfolk NR11 6UE. Entry is free.

If you’re a budding artist or if you have any unwanted paintings, sculptures or textiles tucked away, Redwings

Council’s planning decisions supported on appeal

Agreement with NNDC reflects “hard work and commitment” of planning team

Ten recent appeals against the refusal of planning applications by the District Council have been dismissed by the Planning Inspectorate.

The series of decisions in favour of the Council took place from December 2015 to February 2016 and highlight the consistency between the Council’s policies on planning and the National Planning Policy Framework.

Cabinet member for Planning and Planning Policy Cllr Sue Arnold said “The dismissal of these appeals demonstrates the Council’s decisions are in line with government policy, and reflect the hard work and commitment of our planning team and the Development Committee.

“The original applications, some of them controversial, were across a broad range of projects and touched upon many different constraints and policies. It’s good to have the Council’s Core Strategy backed by the Inspectorate.”

The Planning Inspectorate is an executive agency sponsored by the Department of Communities and Local Government, and the Welsh Government.

The number of appeals against the refusal of planning applications by the District Council has doubled in the past year, with 10 appeals from April 1 to November 30, 2014, and 20 for the same period in 2015. Cromer Times 490 March 26th 2016 28

NORFOLK SENIORS CRICKET 2016

It is often said that cricket like most sports is a young man's game, that is not the case here in Norfolk.

Norfolk Seniors Cricket consists of teams for the over 50s, over 60s and over 70s, cricketers who have never fallen out of love with the game and eagerly await the start of a new season.

Whilst the running in the field may not be quite as quick, the standard remains high with batsmen still getting big scores and the bowlers continuing to take wickets. The competiveness associated with the game does not diminish, the desire to win, and win well remains.

2016 for the Over Seventies is a rather special year. On 15 July at Cromer Cricket Club they will be entertaining a senior side from Australia.

All are welcome to come along and enjoy a splendid day, watch some enjoyable cricket with "the old enemy" and get to chat with players from both sides.

Cromer Walkers Are Welcome - New in Ideas for 2016 In 2015 we developed our town information boards project, aiming to encourage visitors to “Walk Cromer” and to use some of the excellent public transport links. Cromer is the hub for access to a superb range of footpaths and National Trails, as well as many more local walking routes.

We are delighted that many local traders & accommodation providers are displaying our window stickers, encouraging walkers to stay, shop, take tea, or enjoy a delicious pint, muddy boots & all!

North Norfolk Information Centre staff have been a great asset, offering help & advice, displaying our banner & selling our cute little Cromer-Sheringham Pocket Walk & information packs. In 2016 we will be adding more walks to this series, and now each will contain discount vouchers for use in local shops & businesses.
