WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2017? 20 17 ?
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2017 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

'North Norfolk Mammals' talk with Francis Farrow 26 October 7.30pm – 9.30pm This talk will look at the mammals of Norfolk, in particular those species found in north Norfolk during the 21st century. North Norfolk has a diverse number of habitats that are fully exploited by mammals and, although many mammals are secretive, they often leave tell-tale signs or tracks; the talk will include some insights into this fascinating aspect. Francis Farrow has held a passionate life-long interest in the natural world. He is presently the honorary warden of Beeston Common SSSI/SAC and has been the county’s Mammal Recorder for the last five years. Venue is Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church.
Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing.

Rogues will be Rogues Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
It is impossible to legislate for human nature. Financial and other abuse of the vulnerable, and even within families, has been everpresent. So what is so remarkable about retired Master of the Court of Protection Denzil Lush’s tirade about how he would never make a Lasting Power of Attorney (‘LPA’)?
He spent his working life seeing the ‘car-crashes’ of the LPA system, but probably had little to do with the happy cases where a timely LPA is a life-saver. Like an A+E doctor saying paracetamol should be totally banned because he’d seen too many cases where an overdose had been taken, misuse of a system by the few shouldn’t remove its availability from the many.
It doesn’t take an LPA for financial abuse to take place. In these days of internet banking, funds can be accessed/transferred and mis-spent without a scrap of paper.
Better that an LPA should be in place with the availability of the safeguards of the Office of the Public Guardian than the only route being that of a full-on, expensive and very slow application to the Court of Protection for the appointment of a Deputy.
My own late grandfather’s informal carer ‘persuaded’ him, when he was at the point of losing mental capacity in his 90s, to write a
cheque so her teenage son could buy a car. The Power of Attorney, by which he appointed me and my brothers, enabled us to have that £9,000 cheque cancelled at the bank. Without it, he would have been defrauded.
The current system could, of course, always be improved. One way would be to require a professional person (medical or legal) to act in the role of Certificate Provider at the point when the LPA is made.
Contrasting the LPA with Mr Lush’s expressed preference for the Deputyship route shows why the LPA is best in most cases. It can take 12 months for the Court of Protection to appoint a Deputy, during which time their finances are frozen, things can get into a real muddle and even the care fees cannot be paid. Sadly, often the person dies before the Deputy is appointed.
Having more than one attorney appointed by your LPA enables them to keep an eye on each other. It is possible to require your attorneys to produce annual accounts to show where the money is going. There can be a restriction so as to place a cap on the amount that a single attorney can withdraw. Ensuring proper thought is better than avoiding an LPA altogether, as this may compound the problem.
A report last year from Action on Elder Abuse warned on the importance of specialist legal

October at the Museum of the Broads
Our season is coming to a close at the end of October but that doesn't mean that things are winding down in Stalham!
Half term, Monday 23 – Friday 29October, sees our very popular Hallowe’en trail with Broads related spooky goings on. A great event for the family and for our volunteers who love decorating the exhibits!
Don't miss our Broadland in Pictures exhibition - October is your very last chance to see this special collection of paintings, photographs, sculpture, brochures, and holiday souvenirs through the years. Falcon, our steam boat, will be running up to the end of the season, Tuesday to Thursday each week and daily during half term week. It's such a unique trip and loads of wildlife to see along the way.
Finally, we are always looking for volunteers for now and for the new season in 2018. There are a variety of different roles - check out our website. Being a volunteer is a great addition to a CV, it gives the opportunity to learn something new and meet a great bunch of people. It comes highly recommended! Keith Skipper Joins Sheringham Shantymen for Catch of the Day
The Sheringham Shantymen are pleased to announce that they will be performing at 7.30pm at Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre on Sunday 22 October for their last public performance of 2017.
To make this yet another very special occasion, the Shantymen have invited their friend and Cromer resident Norfolk champion, journalist, broadcaster, portrayer of squit and wit Mr Keith Skipper as their very special guest.
Kards & Bits 25 Tucker Street Cromer (behind the church)
Musical Director Mr Brian Farrow said “Following on from the last two years where after much turbulent debate an amicable relationship was finally established we thought it would make perfect sense to revisit this union of crab & lobster.”
The Chairman of the Shantymen Mr Bob Hawkins said “We are very much looking forward to working with Keith Skipper again where we will be able to witness first hand his particular brand of wonderful Norfolk squit”.
With regard to their October performance on the Pier, Booking Secretary Chris Dolby said “Once again I know the lads are looking forward to performing at the Pier Pavilion Theatre where we have always been made to feel very at home by the Pier staff and the wonderful theatre audiences.”
Shantyman secretary Dick Grieve when questioned about Norfolk squit admitted that he had been influenced by Mr Skipper when he advised “Yis ... dew yew keep a’troshin’, tergether!”
This year, the Shantymen will be donating all of the profits from the show, to be split evenly, between the RNLI (Cromer & Sheringham) and the Magdalene Group.
SHERINGHAM AND CROMER LIONS CLUB
On 12 September we held our business meting in the presence of our Zone Chairman, Lion Arthur Bailey, and the District Govenor, Derek Prior, who had travelled all the way from Billericay in Essex to visit Lions Clubs in the District.
Our manning of the car park at Mannington Hall, home of Lord and Lady Walpole, had been a great success after we bought a walkie talkie system to assist us. We held our usual tombola at this once yearly big charity event, which this year was in aid of MS sufferers and we raised over £200 on the day for local needy causes and British Heart Foundation. The weather was good and we look forward to helping again next year.
Our next event is a Concert given by Sheringham and Cromer Brass Band at 7.30 pm on Saturday 11 November at Holt Parish Church entitled ‘Last Night of the Proms’. Tickets are £5 in advance from Brian Harris, Club Secretary 01263 821276 or brihaz@btinternet.com or on the night £7 with concessions. The church is providing refreshments and there will be a raffle. We look forward to seeing you there. Liz Bowler Press Officer

North Norfolk Conservative Councillor joins councillors at a disadvantage when we try to work for the Liberal Democrats bench best interests of local residents. There have been several occasions Nigel Pearce, Conservative District Councillor for Suffield Park ward (Cromer) has left the Conservative Party and joined the Liberal Democrats.
Councillor Pearce commented "After much thought and personal agonising, I have decided to join the Liberal Democrats. After many years of loyal service to the Conservative Party both as a councillor and a researcher, I can no longer reconcile myself to the policies being implemented by the ruling group on North Norfolk District Council." Norman Lamb (left) and Sarah Butikofer welcome Nigel Pearce to the Liberal Democrats
Liberal Democrat leader on the District Council, Sarah Butikofer, welcomed Nigel's decision. Speaking on the first full day of her party's national conference in Bournemouth, Councillor Butikofer said "I am delighted to welcome Nigel to our team. Coming so soon after Councillor Perry-Warnes left the Conservative group to sit as an independent, it is clear that there is great discontent within the Conservative group on the District Council. North Norfolk deserves better - a council that will stand up for them and represent their views. Local government faces many challenges in the future and local people need to know they have the best team representing them."
North Norfolk's Liberal Democrat MP, Norman Lamb, also welcomed the news. Mr Lamb said "Nigel is hugely welcome in the Liberal Democrats. His decision is very significant. Following on from our win here in the General Election, this is an enormous boost. It is incredibly important that we all fight for good local services and an effective and efficient District Council." Councillor Pearce further commented "In my opinion, the problems with the current administration stem from the cabinet system where the decisions of the council are made by a very small group. This leaves back
KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk
where the best people for the job have been replaced, simply because they dared to question the administration. I now believe we should have backed Liberal Democrat leader Sarah Butikofer's motion of no confidence in the leadership, which she brought last autumn. Now Councillor Karen Ward has been promoted, the head the Scrutiny Committee I believe we have a real opportunity to review and hold cabinet decisions to account. Whilst sound financial strategy is crucial for all councils, NNDC is intent on sitting on extraordinarily large reserves. Just some of this could go a long way to improve the services that local people pay their taxes for. I am hugely disappointed by the direction the governing group is taking. I believe a change and a different approach is needed. The momentum in North Norfolk is with the Liberal Democrats. Sarah Butikofer and Norman Lamb and the rest of the team speak up for the needs of ordinary folk. By joining the Liberal Democrats, I hope to be able to make things better for residents."
CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY About 30 members and friends came along to our September meeting, which this year took the form of our members’ Autumn Show. The day of the show had brought strong winds and heavy rain but entries seem to have not been affected as they were on a par with last year. June Rattle won best in section for the flower category with a stunning hydrangea and Monica Gepp won the fruit and vegetable section and also best in show. Liz Holehouse won the flower arranging section. Polly Clark entered one of our shows for the first time and won the handicraft/cookery section.
Well done to all the winners and to our members who supported the evening. Sidestrand Hall School were the winners of our school’s competition this year. They have entered every year since the competition started so it gave the judges much pleasure to see them come out on top this year. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 11 October at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Lynn Shannon will be speaking on ‘Norfolk Lavender’. It should be a good evening so do come along. Members free and visitors ÂŁ2.

CROMER FLOWER CLUB
In September we were visited by Jackie Aldous who is a keen theatre and television buff.
Her first arrangement was in a basket teapot and was very pretty with ivy, antique pinks, clematis and Himalayan honeysuckle. Next was a glamorous Breakfast at Tiffanys in black and white with dogwood and avalanche roses.
Then she made a crazy hat arrangement for Jason Donovan in Pricilla Queen of the Desert with kangaroo paw. Chinese lanterns and sunflowers.
We then had a tribute to the Eurovision Song Contest with surprisingly effective sticks covered with loo paper and tinsel. She moved on to

Dancing on Ice with eucalyptus leaves, sea holly and delphiniums. Jackie finished with a tribute to Vincent of Strictly Come Dancing with red spray roses gerberas and chrysanthemums. The vote of thanks was given by Liz Crane.
Our August Afternoon Tea raised £216 for our charity Nelson’s Journey. The competition was an arrangement in a top hat. Jill Breeze was the winner this month - her design included pink roses, alliums, hebes and nerines.
Next month our demonstrator is Jenny Baker on the Feminine Touch. The very good news is that next month it is bring a friend for free, come with a friend for free or come by yourself for free - we are a friendly bunch! So be at Cromer Primary School on 16 October at 7.20pm.

Join in free music sessions at Sheringham to boost wellbeing
Music has the power to make people feel better – and a seaside community can boost its wellbeing at a new series of have-a-go sessions.
Hour-long, free community music and singing workshops will be held weekly from October to March at Sheringham Little Theatre under a Lottery-backed initiative.
They will range from beating out African drum rhythms and strumming ukuleles to singing Sea Shanties and writing a community song for Sheringham.
And they are designed for the whole community, aged 13 upwards, including people with dementia or other health conditions, and their carers. No previous music-making experience is needed.
director Tina Blaber-Wegg said “I have seen at first hand the power of music to help people during illness, when it provided a bass playing fellow musician who had dementia with fun, distraction and respite.
“We hope these workshops will do the same for the community and provide a supportive environment for carers and the cared-for to relax and enjoy. They provide an opportunity for people to share the joy of music-making, between generations and across different musical genres.”
The free workshops – for all ages from 13 upwards and abilities - will be held between 4pm and 6pm on Wednesdays from 4 October to 28 March in the theatre’s Hub coffee bar, with social time included before and after.

About 850 North Norfolk businesses to benefit from more than Discretionary Revaluation Relief scheme. This fund – worth more than £1m in rate relief £900,000 in North Norfolk – is designed to help businesses that received Lower bills will be sent out automatically over the next few weeks.
About 850 businesses across North Norfolk are in line to benefit from rate relief of more than £1m over the next five years thanks to the introduction of three schemes.
Businesses that have seen their rates go up following recent revaluations, as well as pubs, are amongst the beneficiaries of the schemes, which have been given the green light by North Norfolk District Council. The money has come from central government but it is down to local authorities to draw up plans to distribute the funds. The largest chunk of money will come in the form of the Local
steep rises in their bills following rate revaluations earlier this year. The decision by the District Council means about 700 businesses should be receiving new, lower bills under this scheme alone, highlighting that North Norfolk is a better place to do business.
The bulk of this cash – more than £500,000 – will be distributed this year, with a tapering effect over the next few years. The vast majority of the beneficiaries of this relief will see their rate increases cut by between 25% and 50% this year. Supporting Small Businesses Relief is also aimed at helping businesses that were hit by the recent change in rateable values. It is specifically targeted at businesses that saw the loss of Small Business Rates Relief or Rural Rate Relief as a result of the revaluation process. Meanwhile, it is thought that about 80 pubs will be better off thanks to Pub Relief.
Businesses that are due to benefit from these rate reliefs will be contacted automatically and sent amended bills over the next few weeks.
Cllr Wyndham Northam, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Revenues and Benefits, said “It is great news that about 700 businesses will benefit from the Local Discretionary Revaluation Relief scheme, with others benefiting from the two other reliefs.”
“We have acted promptly to find the best way to distribute this money, and businesses across the district should be receiving their amended bills soon.”
Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “This is a great place to do business, and the fact that so many of our businesses will see a large reduction in their rate increases this year can only help the wider local economy.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
As most people are now aware, we offer help with cat neutering for people on low income or benefits. Irene deals with the initial enquiries on our special neutering line, which is listed below, and confirms whether or not they are eligible for one of these vouchers or, if not, offers a fixed price voucher depending on the sex of the cat/kitten. If the owner wants to take up the offer they send details of the cat, their address and telephone number and the payment to me to deal with. I then share this information with the vets, issue the voucher to them and advise the owner they can book their cat in for the operation. We always advise the owner that the information is not used for any other purpose and is not shared with any other organisations.
People are not always aware that their cat can become pregnant while still feeding an existing litter and it has been known for a cat to become pregnant again soon after giving birth. One worried owner recently contacted us because she had taken in a stray that had a litter of four kittens. She had found homes for two but decided to keep their litter mates. The mother had recently had another litter (this time of eight kittens) so she was desperate to get the first kittens neutered as the female could also become pregnant, possibly by her brother. She will also get the mother neutered as soon as the kittens are feeding independently to avoid a further litter. Not much of a life for the poor little mum and also the possibility of interbreeding which could mean unhealthy kittens.
We often get calls from people who have found an injured or ill cat, asking for advice. Because we do not have the skills and knowledge that our vets are able to give, we always ask the caller to contact their local vets for help. We will also suggest they check with their neighbours in case it is their pet. In the past we have had instances where people have contacted us, and the cat in question was owned by a neighbour and, although the cat seemed in poor health, it was already receiving veterinary care. If an owner cannot be found, help can sometimes be
obtained from the RSPCA for treatment. However, the person concerned would need to contact the RSPCA first to obtain a special number to give to the vets.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are Harley, lovely friendly girl, eligible for a voucher). This number is about 5 years old for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Vein care services at Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic
With the latest technology on offer and thousands of successful treatments, why not give it a try
Coltishall Clinic specialises in the treatment of veins. We have extensive experience treating veins on the face, legs and anywhere on the body with an excellent functional and cosmetic outcome.
Leg Veins : Unsightly leg veins can be a problem for millions of men and women, the world over. It is estimated that in many areas, over 60 percent of the adult population suffers from varicose veins, thread veins or spider veins. Sometimes thread and spider veins are like the tip of an iceberg, but they can occur in absence of underlying problems. Often people who have had surgery for varicose veins are left with thread and spider veins and these can be treated very well too. Contrary to popular belief these tiny veins can cause symptoms and can be more difficult to treat then the larger veins. A medical history and clinical examination is undertaken. If this indicates problems with underlying venous valves and varicose veins then these have to be treated before addressing thread and spider veins. An ultrasound vein scan is ideal but not mandatory in every case.
For thread and spider veins sclerotherapy is usually undertaken- micro injections of medication into veins are performed. These destroy the vein lining and veins are subsequently slowly absorbed by the body. Anywhere between 50-80% of injected veins respond and further injections in the same area can be carried out 4-6 weeks later. Treated veins appear worse before they disintegrate and disappear. Sclerotherapy is considered ‘gold-standard’ treatment for thread and spider veins. Lasers are also available and can be used in

combination with sclerotherapy. We have several vein lasers and we use the best one for your unique needs. This is very important. Higher energies and deeper penetration are required which means that laser treatment can sometimes be painful. With careful patient selection these treatments can provide excellent outcomes as shown here.
Varicose Veins : Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was completely removed from the leg.
More recently, endovenous laser therapy has been developed. Bulging varicose veins in the lower leg are usually caused by a faulty valve located higher in the leg that can’t be seen at the surface. The endovenous laser therapy treats the source of the problem. Endovenous laser therapy involves the insertion of a laser fiber directly into the diseased vein using ultrasound guidance. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Patients experience minimal discomfort, and they can return to normal activities the same day. Because there are many veins in the leg, the blood that would have flowed through the closed vein simply flows through other healthy veins after the laser therapy.
So if you are bothered by painful, achy, unsightly and nuisance veins anywhere on your face or body, please do come and see us to see what we can do for you. Call 0800 0430737 or log on to www.veintreatments.org.uk

‘Lights for a Cromer Christmas’ THE STRAND CLUB calls out for votes to bag a share We enjoyed a creative afternoon at our September meeting. While the torrential rain battered the cricket pitch it was a question of of Tesco’s bag fund
We are one of three community projects short-listed for an award of £4000, £2000 or £1000 – the more votes the more funding!
And it’s easy - simply visit the Tesco Sheringham Store, as many times as possible, between from now until 31 October and make any value purchase and receive a token per transaction and vote for us!
The volunteers at Cromer Christmas Lights are in their third year of an essential refurbishment programme to provide the town with brighter, better illuminations and reduce electricity costs. This year we are concentrating on the Suffield Park/schools area and minor roads such as Garden Street and others central to the Christmas celebrations in Cromer. Help us to help you all to a brighter Christmas.
The Norfolk Lettings Company celebrates its first birthday! One year on and going strong.…
On a chilly morning last October and armed with her industry expertise, local knowledge and the support of several local landlords, Gemma Bailey opened the doors to her new office on Garden Street in Cromer. Offering a local and good value service and a common sense approach, Gemma set about matching landlords and tenants together with properties across North Norfolk and Norwich.
Amid rave reviews, The Norfolk Lettings Company’s great reputation began to spread and, 12 months on, the business has grown to manage nearly 70 properties for over 50 landlords.
Also, The Norfolk Lettings Company has a new staff member and with her years of customer service experience, Laura has become an integral

'heads down, look in' as we made and decorated Christmas trees to be used at our December meeting. Ann Baker had made them at her WI get-together and had brought a finished tree with the various templates earlier in the year for us to see so that we could do the same.
First members stuck circles of felt on milk bottle tops, and then covered them with festive fabric which was then gathered round. The finished buttons were then stuck to a tree-shaped card which had already been covered with a Christmassy paper. Decorations were added. The finished trees were much admired.
After the raffle, and tea and biscuits we left feeling pleased with ourselves - if rather sticky around the fingers! Our thanks go to Ann for being an excellent tutor and to Jackie who prepared all the bits and produced copies of the templates for people to take home if they fancied making more.
Our next meeting will be the cream tea on 11 October, when Miriam and Tony will entertain us with a musical quiz. It begins at the usual time of 2pm and if anyone was not able to be there in September and would like to come, please telephone Jackie on 01263 720866 to arrange to pay the £3 required.
We always welcome visitors who need only pay £2 at the door to cover light refreshments. Raffle. tickets are available separately throughout the afternoon. member of the team, which has allowed us to expand the business further.

Friends of Cromer Museum
The autumn/winter series of talks organised by the Friends of Cromer Museum got off to a fine start in September with a talk by David Stannard titled ‘Spoyled by the Raging of the Sea’.
David has been researching the history of North Sea storms for 30 years. Since 1014 there have been a number of storms in this area bringing about great changes to people’s lives. Many lives have been lost, many coastal villages have disappeared, the Broads were formed and aspects of Norfolk’s ancient past, hitherto unknown, have been revealed.
The storm of December 1287 flooded many towns including ‘Hychelyngge’ (Hickling) where 180 people died.
‘The Great Drowning of Men’ of January 1362 devastated the North Sea coast. Perhaps as many as 30,000 died, most of these in Holland where ‘De Grote Mandrenke’ was remembered for centuries after.
The spire of Norwich Cathedral was blown down and St Clements Church at Keswick near Bacton was destroyed. A tidal flood of February 1570 flooded Great Yarmouth, Wisbech, Dunwich and Lynn and Fye Bridge in Norwich was washed away in the storm.
In October of the same year, marshland south of Lynn was flooded again and on All Saints Day the church in Eccles was damaged beyond repair and was dismantled and moved inland. Seventy six Broadland towns and villages and 16 in Suffolk were flooded during storms of 1607/08 which led to the first ever government action to improve sea defences.
Nine breaches of the sea defences between Waxham and Horsey at the end of the 18th century shows that the defences were not always maintained that well.
Three days of storms in late February 1897 caused much flooding and loss of life and damaged the old jetty in Cromer so badly that it was taken down and eventually replaced with the pier that stands today.
Many people alive today can remember the storm of January 1953 that led to the death of over 300 people on the east coast of England and over 1800 in Holland. One cottage in Sea Palling had four foot of sand in the living room after the flood water subsided.
Some good has come as a result of the ravages of the sea on the east coast. The Met Office was founded in 1867 to provide better advice to shipping on the state of the weather. One of the first radio stations set up in 1900 by Marconi was at Caister-on Sea to help the herring fleet and Trinity House and the RNLI and HM Coastguard owe their existence to the need to protect shipping and coastal areas from the
Cromer Times 527 October 7th 2017
dangers of storms. In recent year,s the effect of storm damage on the coast of Norfolk has led to the discovery of the West Runton Mammoth, the Happisburgh hand axe and the uncovering of the oldest human footprints yet found in Europe. This has increased our knowledge of Norfolk’s distant past enormously.
The depth of knowledge and confident delivery of David Stannard enthralled the audience and all went away better informed about a phenomenon that is an ever present part of life in Norfolk.
Our next talk is on Friday 20 October at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Frank Meeres’ topic is ‘Ordinary Women, Extraordinary Lives’. This will focus on the lives of women who have made a significant contribution to life in Norfolk. All are welcome – members of the Friends £2.50, visitors £3.
WARNING
Your local charity has heard from several local residents who have received telephone calls claiming to be from HMRC and warning them they will be charged and taken to court for tax discrepancies.
They are then asked to press 1 on their phone. This is a scam – HMRC DO NOT contact taxpayers in this way so if you receive a call of this nature cut it off and do not respond.

Paston Sixth Form College and City College Norwich pledge to continue listening as consultation confirms support for merger Paston Sixth Form College and City College Norwich have published a summary of the public consultation on the Colleges’ proposed merger, together with their responses to key themes that have emerged through the consultation process. Leaders of the two Colleges are pleased with the overall positive response to the consultation, which saw more than half in support of the merger, whilst welcoming the opportunity to provide clarification and further detail on key aspects of the plans.
Response : Majority support for merger There was overall support for the merger among the 159 responses to the public consultation, with 51% in favour of the merger and 43% against the proposal. This is a recognition that together the two Colleges could create a larger, more resilient organisation, safeguarding A-Level provision and increasing vocational and adult education provision in North East Norfolk. Consultation : “It is important that we continue to listen” In a joint Foreword to the Response to the Public Consultation, Matt Colmer (Chair of City College Norwich Corporation) and Nicola Lucking (Chair of Paston Sixth Form College Corporation) write: “We have listened to the positive, negative and neutral comments and all the advice given, which will help to shape our future plans for the merger and the new institution going forward. It is important that we continue to listen to your views and both Principals will therefore make themselves available to meet stakeholders and members of the public who wish to talk through our merger proposals.”
Identity and reputation : Paston name and heritage to be retained The document confirms the intention to retain the Paston name, after the consultation found that a clear majority of respondents favoured the name “Paston College”. Furthermore, the Paston College Foundation will “retain a strong association with the merged College as Landlord of part of the Paston site” and will “work closely with the new combined institution to preserve the strong heritage, identity and reputation of Paston”. Student travel : Positive impact on travel to learn patterns In relation to the impact on students, the Colleges say that an increased vocational offer in North East Norfolk “is likely to impact positively on the ‘travel to learn’ patterns for students.” Both institutions understand that “it is not in the interests of the College and the students to spend time travelling at the expense of valuable study time.” Therefore, students enrolling at Paston or City College Norwich will remain at their chosen site. Additional travel between sites will only be required where agreed in advance.
Other key themes covered in the Response document relate to: the impact on the future of academic and vocational provision; leadership and management at Paston; the impact on staff; and the impact on the North Walsham economy Next steps : Subject to the completion of legal and financial due diligence, the aim is to complete the merger on Friday 1st December 2017. The final decision on whether the merger will go ahead rests with the governing bodies of both Colleges.
During this process, the leaders of Paston Sixth Form College and City College Norwich are still committed to listening to views from those in the local community and have therefore made themselves available for discussions. Full details of dates and times can be found at www.pastonccn.co.uk

Kevin Grieve, Principal, Paston Sixth Form College, commented: “We are pleased with the results of the public consultation and would like to thank everyone who took part. This is all about meeting needs of the North East Norfolk community by providing an improved offer that is sustainable. By becoming one institution, we can work together to become an even stronger educational force than we currently are. We have a proud history and we are determined to build on this history by joining with City College Norwich to meet local needs in North East Norfolk.” Corrienne Peasgood, Principal, City College Norwich, said: “Both institutions have a strong history and it is our aim to maintain, develop and celebrate their individual strengths and specialisms following the merger. After completion, we strongly believe the wider choice of courses and increased progression routes available will provide even more opportunities for young people to achieve their individual aspirations in North East Norfolk.”

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club Tales from the Bowling Green ...
... By the time you read this, our Summer 'playing' season is over. Our woods lovingly polished and resting for next year. Play came to an end on 30 September. Some members did play, almost to the final minute.
Prior to the end, we did complete some outstanding business. Bernie Crow, captain of the Nanson Afternoon team reports that Cromer Marrams won its final game against our Cromer neighbours, Suffield Park, finishing in the middle of the Afternoon League, Division 1 Table.
Of our two remaining 'in-house' competitions, the GR Baker Cup, Mens Pairs, was won by David Mocock and Gary Younghusband.
Runners-up were Neil Patrickson and Roger Greef. The other competition, played in weather most inclement, was for the Ladies Rose Bowl and was won by Ann Matthews.
The prize giving evening was held on 30 September.
As mentioned previously, during the winter months we shall be running short mat bowls, good fun sessions, not to be taken too seriously, just to be 'enjoyed'. Cost is £1.50 per person which includes tea and biscuits. Visitors are welcome to pop in and try it out. Quiz evenings, as in

Golden leaves float before me And crackle under my feet Autumn in all its glory A magical scene you just cannot beat Winter is on the doorstep When cold north winds will blow So today is very precious As I embrace the sun’s warm glow There’s a rustle in the undergrowth
