AN UNPRECEDENTED FIFTH TITLE FOR BAKER Just over 30 years ago Cromer squash player Jeff Morris tragically died on court and the Club decided to honour his memory by instigating a tournament for players aged 35 and over which was held for the first time in the autumn of 1985.
This year was the 32nd anniversary of that first tournament and in the final last month John Baker, who first won the title in 2004 and again for three consecutive years from 2013-2015, as well as being runner up in 2008, won the prestigious event for an unprecedented fifth time as he defeated one of the club’s new members, Phil Godfrey 9-3 7-9 9-5 9-4 in a pulsating and skilful final. Cromer
Continued from front cover... Although Roger Tuck won the title four times between 1987 and 1992 no player has ever won it for a fifth time.
The Cromer club were delighted that Jeff’s daughter, Debbie, was among the large crowd on the Norwich Road balcony and that she was able to present the trophies at the end of the match to the two finalists. Baker, who has also won the club championship four times and the club veterans’ title twice went into the final as the under-dog against sixty eight year old Godfrey, who plays regularly on the England Masters circuit and who has won five successive matches for the club’s team since joining at the start of the season. However, Baker went into the final in a determined mood and raced into a 6-3 lead in the opening game before taking the game 9-3 as he allowed his older and more experienced opponent just seven serves in the whole game.
The second game followed a different pattern. Baker led 3-0 but Godfrey drew level and then led 5-3 only for Baker to regain the serve and lead 7-5 before Godfrey won five successive hands to level the match as he won the game 9-7.
Baker’s natural game is to drive the ball hard into the back corners and in fact Technical Director Barry Starling said that he still hits the ball cleaner than anybody else in the club. However in this match he was adding a new dimension to his play with a series of effective drop shots and deceptive “boasts which dragged Godfrey around the court. Baker went from 2-2 to 7-2 in one hand and although Godfrey rallied briefly he uncharacteristically served out at 5-8 and Baker took the game on his third game ball to lead 2-1.
ALDIS MOTORS LTD
By now Godfrey was struggling with a hamstring problem and after surrendering a 3-0 lead in the fourth game he only won one more point as Baker closed out the game 9-4 and the match 3-1

Three years ago Baker had said that as a young man Jeff had given him every encouragement when he applied to join the fire service more than 30 years ago and he has always considered it something special to win REPAIRS, SERVICE & DIAGNOSTIC this title. After the final he said that although in cold figures it might look as though he had a comfortable victory this at Main Dealer levelwas forfar from the case and Godfrey contributed to a tremendous match.
Vauxhall
In the semi finals Baker defeated the tournament’s oldest competitor, Peugeot Malcolm Crane in straight games while Godfrey also had a 3-0 victory over Sean Moore.

THE STRAND CLUB
Our meeting last month included an excellent talk by Eddie Anderson of Templewood in Northrepps.
He inherited the house and land from his stepfather, one of the Paget dynasty. Over the years the lake had become clogged with algae, until three years ago when the algae had reached a depth of 3 feet, taking all the oxygen necessary for life from the water.
No fish, no frogs, no dragon- or damselflies and therefore no predatory birds. The river Mun runs as a narrow stream through Eddie's land and this had also become clogged and poisoned by the effluent from the nearby sewage works, which flowed directly into it.
As knowledge and concern for the wildlife grew, things were taken in hand and three new lakes were dug to draw the polluted water from the river, by-passing it and naturally filtering it until it could be directed back into the river again.
Whilst digging out these new lakes, Eddie told us that archaeologists discovered a wooden walkway, buried and preserved in the upper surface of peat. Shards of Roman pottery were also found, plus evidence of an early bog or lake. The River Trust came every month to test the river water and found that after, only nine months, the harmful phosphates had been reduced by 90%. Anglian Water are now using this natural method of clearing pollutants
elsewhere in the county.
In the newly cleared main lake Eddie now sees 26 species of dragonflies or damselflies.
The first creature to appear was an otter as there was now food there for him to find. There is a visiting hobby who flies in to catch the dragonflies and a pair of swans return every year to breed.
Eddie talked about the history of the area too and how wealthy people came and bought copious amounts of land during 1860 - 1900s. The Hoare family bought large pieces of Sidestrand, Cromer, Northrepps and Southrepps and built Templewood as well as other imposing houses.
He told us how you define a river, however tiny. It runs independently from its source to the sea, unlike a tributary. Early setttlements tended to be made close to water so that the fresh water and the fish living in it could be used to sustain life. They continued through the centuries so that millponds could be built to produce flour and make bread.
Eddie kept us spellbound with his presentation, showing us before and after photographs of the area. It was all done with a light touch, humour and an obvious love of his home. It was such a varied and fascinating insight into so many aspects of land management and conservation. Our members thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we hope that perhaps Eddie could return at some future date and talk about another of his interests.
Visitors are always welcome at our meetings. We charge just £2 at the door to cover light refreshments. Further information may be obtained from either Jackie Hudson, Chairman, on 01263 720866 or Chris Wood on 01263 579433. Please come and see what you think of us!

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2017? 20 17 ?
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2017 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Cley Calling celebrates Norfolk’s starry skies this December
Do you know your mallard from your gadwall? Can you hum ‘Die Fledermaus’ or fancy a spot of frosty storytelling with a glass of mulled wine? Yes, it’s Cley Calling time again, as Norfolk Wildlife Trust celebrates Norfolk’s winter skies with its final wildlife festival of the year.
Cley Calling - Winter Skies runs from Thursday 7 December to Sunday 10 December at NWT Cley Marshes on the north Norfolk coast. The events celebrate Norfolk’s many natural wonders and build on the success of the three previous festivals.
Our knowledgeable staff and volunteers are leading guided walks around the reserve and invite you to take a closer look at Cley’s wintering wildfowl. Saturday’s workshop Sound Recording, in partnership with National Trust, ties in a walk around the reserve with the rare chance to capture the sounds of Cley’s secretive residents such as bearded tits and bitterns, hiding away in the depths of reedbed.
NWT is pleased to welcome back North Norfolk Sinfonia after their wonderful performance at Cley Church last summer. On Friday 8 December, the salon orchestra of twelve will be performing Viennese and British light classical music using a variety of string, brass and woodwind instruments, as well as a grand piano. Guests will enjoy a three course dinner and a glass of wine (included in ticket price) as the orchestra performs classics including ‘The Blue Danube’, festive hits such as ‘Sleigh Ride’, and to tie in beautifully with our dark skies theme: ‘Die Fledermaus’, which translates to ‘The Bat’ in English. Keith Hobday, leader and conductor of North Norfolk Sinfonia, said “North Norfolk Sinfonia are really looking forward to joining NWT for this special event. We are delighted to have the opportunity to perform beautiful music in an equally beautiful landscape.”
The festival is concluded with a weekend full of family fun. On Saturday families can battle it out to see who can hand-make the most Christmas crafty creations using natural materials. On Sunday 10 December, the festival will come to close with some magical Storytelling by Paul Jackson (pictured), who will be reading a collection of stories to celebrate winter, entitled ‘When it’s so cold that words freeze in the air’. Paul has been storytelling for 24 years and is Chair of The Society for Storytelling, the national body that promotes storytelling. He has visited more than 2,000 schools nationally, impressing his audiences with his brilliant stories interwoven with the melodic tunes of the harp and flute. Wind down in the education centre with a glass of mulled wine or hot squash as Paul enchants us all with his seasonal stories.

North Norfolk - a better place to go swimming… North Norfolk District Council celebrates the ‘excellent’ bathing water classification
The water quality at all six Blue Flag award winning beaches in North Norfolk have been confirmed as Excellent in the 2017 Bathing Water Classifications by Government. Bathing water at Sheringham, West Runton, East Runton, Cromer, Mundesley, and Sea Palling has been classified as ‘Excellent’ by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Water is tested at our beaches every week over the summer months and each year DEFRA publishes the results, which rate bathing water as either: Excellent, Good, Sufficient or Poor; in 2017 all six of the blue flag beaches have been recognised as having excellent bathing water. Nationally 270 locations (65.4% of those measured) have been classed as excellent in 2017. Cllr Maggie Prior, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure said “It’s absolutely wonderful that the quality of our beaches has been recognised in this national bathing water classification. We all know that north Norfolk is a great holiday and resort destination and this latest rating goes to prove that people who come here know a good thing when they see it.” This water quality classification will be a key factor in the award of Blue Flags for next year. The news has been welcomed by councillors along the coast.
Ward Member for Sea Palling Cllr Richard Price said “I am not surprised that our wonderful Blue Flag Beach has been assessed as having excellent clean water, that’s just one of the reasons why people come back year after year.” Cllr Hilary Cox, Ward Member for Cromer Town said “This is a wonderful achievement proving that the seas off our resorts are the best. It’s important not only for residents and visitors but for our local fishing industry too.” Cllr Nigel Pearce, Ward Member for Suffield Park added “This accolade for our bathing water is not only great news for tourists but for everyone in North Norfolk. Not only is North Norfolk the best but our bathing water is too!” Cllr John Lee, Ward Member for Suffield Park said “I'd like to thank everybody from Anglian Water to all those people who give their time to keep our beaches clean for ensuring our beaches and bathing water keep winning these accolades.” Cllr Judy Oliver, Ward Member for Sheringham South said “The quality of the beaches in Sheringham and at our other Blue Flag resorts is second to none. We are very proud of this, and very grateful to all those who work so hard to help us maintain our Blue Flag status. We now have it confirmed that the quality of our seawater is also excellent, making our beaches great places for visitors and residents to enjoy for recreation and exercise.” Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Ward Member for The Runtons said “I was delighted earlier this year when both the beaches in the Runtons were presented with their Blue Flags. This announcement just reinforces the message that our beaches are amongst the best in the country. Something we as locals already know.”

Get ready for Christmas with our treatment combinations
Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic is fully equipped with 23 state-of-the-art lasers and experience of helping thousands of people.
Dermal fillers have enjoyed tremendous increase in popularity. Unfortunately success has brought lots of untested products as well as untrained or poorly trained operators. Recent studies have shown an alarming rise in side effects with some studies showing as much as 25% complication rates.
Complications that we are particularly worried about are infections, direct injection into an artery which can cause catastrophic effects, Venous compression and more worryingly some cases of chronic pain. Permanent fillers are more of a problem because they do not stay confined but they can spread into the tissue planes, which may make surgery necessary if expression by needle fails.
Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM is medical director and laser surgeon at the Coltishall Cosmetic clinic and has been injecting safe dermal fillers for over 11 years with outstanding results.
So what are his tips for safe treatments and to minimise risk of complications.
1] Choose your practitioner wisely, what is their background. Do they have a medical qualification? Have they had any training in dermatology or surgery? How many treatments have they done and can they show you their results? This is very important because the person administering these treatments should not only be excellent at treatments, he or she should be able to manage complications should things go wrong. There is no shortage of people from different medical and even non-medical backgrounds offering these treatments. Remember you get what you pay for and cheapest is often not the best!
2] Choose your clinic wisely, do they offer a variety of treatments or do they have only one or two treatments that they can offer. Are they trying to fit you to a treatment rather than offering you most suitable treatment from a range of different available options. Do they provide information on side effects? No medical treatment is risk free. You have to know possible side effects and then make an informed choice.
3] Choose your product wisely. The most important thing is that that a reputable product with a proven safety track record is used and that an experienced cosmetic medical practitioner administers it. Recently there has been a surge of new fillers coming into the market but a lot of these have far less research. The latest treatment is not necessarily the greatest. You don’t want to be a guinea pig for an untested product. Choose that safest product and avoid permanent fillers.

Why treatment combinations? A number of changes happen to us as we age. We have volume loss, muscle over activity, sun damage and loss of elasticity. No single treatment can address all of these issues. Treatment combinations provide the best and natural results. We have invested in top of the range comprehensive technology and have the experience of using it effectively. We have designed these packages for reversing age related changes in one appointment. A kind of mini extreme makeover!

About with Friends bags £2000 from carrier bag charge fund
About with Friends is delighted to announce it has bagged £2000 from a Tesco funding scheme.
Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help funding initiative, which sees grants raised from carrier bag sales being awarded to thousands of local community projects every year.
Millions of shoppers voted in stores up and down the country. And it can now be revealed About with Friends has been awarded £2000. Work will now begin on bringing the project to life.
already involved in planning a presentation and putting together a newsletter, the funds will enable us to provide IT equipment to support this”. Alec Brown, Tesco’s Head of Community, said “Bags of Help has been a fantastic success. We’ve been overwhelmed by the response from our customers. The great thing about Bags of Help is that local people are invited to decide how the money will be spent in their community. We can’t wait to see the projects come to life.”
About with Friends is a Cromer based charity supporting people with learning disabilities in Norfolk to make friends, enjoy a social life, learn skills for work and independence and be part of the community.
Some of our members are part of our Events & Media team which organises activities, attends community events and give talks and presentations to promote the work of the charity. Being part of the Events & Media team enables members to learn new skills, play an active role in the community and boosts confidence. Members are trained in presentation skills, setting up equipment, using cameras and videos. The funding from Tesco Bags of Help will enable us to provide additional training and new equipment, as well as staff support to attend more events. Jamie Moses, Head of Workskills Operations, said “About with Friends would like to thank everyone who voted for the project at Tesco stores in Sheringham and Mundesley. Voting ran in stores throughout July and August with customers choosing which local project they would like to get the top award using a token given to them at the checkout. Since launching in 2015, Bags of Help has awarded more than £36 million across more than 7,900 local projects. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups each time they shop. Every other

month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding.
Bags of Help criteria have recently been extended to include any project that benefits the community. Previously the scheme funded outdoor projects only.
Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said “Bags of Help continues to fund thousands of projects across the UK. We want to ensure that the money raised benefits as many local people in as many different places as possible so we’ve extended the range of groups and projects that we can support. The scale and variety of activities supported by Bags of Helps shows what can be achieved when communities are given the support and the encouragement they need to make change happen in their local area.” Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp.

The five star reviews on Trip Advisor for last year’s show, saw loyal patrons and new patrons alike, complimenting the show on its production values, the performers and costumes. The Christmas-themed family show, offers ticket prices starting from as little as £10 and great value family tickets at £46 making the show one of the best value-for-money Christmas Shows in Norfolk.

His cheeky chappy humour and sparkling charm are all part of the Cromer Christmas magic. The Cromer Pier Christmas Show, now in its 13th year, has ever-increasing fan bases that make the trip each year to see what is fast becoming one of the main Christmas Shows in the UK. This year’s shows are already in great demand with show bookings well in advance of last year.

Cromer’s New Year’s Day Firework Display All eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier at 5pm on 1 January 2018 for the traditional New Year’s Day Firework display. Organisers hope as many people as possible will again come to Cromer for the day – but urge them not to leave it until the last minute. “We’re delighted it’s become such a successful annual event, and with plenty of good vantage points to watch the display, come early, we don’t want anyone to miss it,” says Firework Committee Chairman Jim Bond. “The idea has always been to bring people up to the coast for a breath of fresh air, something to eat and drink, and a fabulous firework display over the sea fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm. “We are fortunate to have Titanium Fireworks back again. Titanium put on the fantastic London New Year’s Eve display. This year they are looking to make more use of the seaside location, including waterborne pyrotechnics”. The annual display attracts over 10,000 people into Cromer on New Year’s Day. Director of Titanium Fireworks, Simon Page, said “We are incredibly proud to be firing the Cromer New Year's day firework display from Cromer Pier, and will be making full use of this unique setting. We believe our experience on the London Eye, The Forth Road Bridge, Blackpool Pier and a host of stadia roofs will help us to make this display even better by using our digital firing system which allows split second firing from multiple locations. Some of the 150 displays we fire each year are work but others unbridle our creativity and we relish the challenges and opportunities of firing from an iconic structure like Cromer Pier." Prior to the fireworks there will be a fun run along Cromer Promenade at 3pm organized by North Norfolk Beach Runners. The one mile fun run is the perfect opportunity to work off those New Year’s Eve excesses with a gentle jog or a five minute dash if you’re up to it! ages and abilities, with categories for under 13 year-olds, 14-16 year-olds, seniors, and even Fancy Dress. Registration will take place from 2.30pm for a fee of £1. Illuminated merchandise available to buy during the afternoon outside Cromer Museum (next to the Church). Mulled wine will again be served outside the museum, with tea, coffee, and hot soup available in the church. Local cafés, pubs, shops and restaurants will also be open and other vendors are planning to ensure the crowds who descend on Cromer won’t go hungry. The event is free, however there will be bucket collectors out in force on the day to fundraise for the 2019 display. The bucket collection at the 2017 display raised a fantastic £9,000, despite the postponement . Half of this was given out in grants to local good causes and the balance has been used towards funding the 2018 display. “Everyone’s aware that budgets are still tight, but we do ask people give as generously as they can”, said Jim Bond. “Just a few coins can make a lot of difference to local charities and good causes – and without everyone’s help we couldn’t continue the annual display.” Visitors are urged to arrive in Cromer as early as possible on New Year’s Day. All three town car parks will be open. Runton Road car park will be charging a fixed charge of £2 per car for all day parking from 2pm on the day. Normal
car park fees will apply on all other car parks. There will be no parking available on Cromer Promenade on New Year’s Day. It is hoped that details of other parking facilities will be issued nearer the time, including the local press. Alternatively, why not leave the car at home or park at an outlaying station and catch the train. Cromer Pier will be closed from 8am on New Year’s Day until after the display (approximately 7pm) although Tides Restaurant will be open until 4pm. Please see Cromer Town Council website (www.cromer-tc.gov.uk) or the event’s Facebook page (New Year's Day Fireworks, Cromer) for updates and a list of some of the traders who will be open on the day.

9,500 mile fundraising walk Over three years ago, Alex Ellis-Roswell set out from Minnis Bay in Kent to walk round the British and Irish coastlines to pay tribute to his late father and raise money for the RNLI.
He returned to that very spot on Saturday 11 November, where his family, friends, supporters and local lifeboat crew were waiting to greet him.
During his amazing odyssey, 24 year old Alex has been chased by bulls and met Princess Anne. He has slept in church doorways, sheep sheds and bird hides, visited over 200 lifeboat stations – and raised more than £62,000 for the lifesaving charity so far. In the last month, he walked inland along the Thames to visit the four stations that lie along the famous river - Gravesend, Teddington, Chiswick and Tower.
Alex said 'I'm excited to be raising a great sum for the RNLI and its volunteers.'
He started his journey on 3 August 2014 with an aim to raise as much money as possible for the charity.
He left his job, gave notice on his flat and walked out with only what he carried on his back. Since then, he has slept in a tent that he carries with him - or relied on the kindness of strangers. He's often been put up by lifeboat crew or people who have met him along the way.
18
Alex has also amassed a significant following on social media, where his supporters have cheered him on through the emotional ups and downs of his journey.
His route took him clockwise around Britain and Ireland, including the Isle of Man, the Western and Northern Isles. His initial fundraising target was £10,000 - but he has gone a long way past that.
It was after the passing of his father, Sir Raymond Ellis at Christmas in 2013, that Alex set off on the journey of a lifetime. Before ill health, his father had spent much of his life dedicated to charity work and fundraising, which spurred Alex on.
‘My dad’s ultimate stubbornness against what seemed to be a never ending cycle of illness, pain, operations and setbacks will always be a very personal inspiration to me’, said Alex, who has at times suffered with knee pain during his walk.‘I started off thinking about £10,000 then £20,000 then £50,000. I suppose reaching this target shows how well supported the RNLI is by the people, places and communities I’ve walked through, especially when, for many people, money is tight.’
Alex’s target is now £95,000, which represents £10 for every mile he has walked.
Alex remains diplomatic and refuses to name a favourite station. But the crew at Falmouth helped him through a particularly rough patch. ‘The loneliness gets you down sometimes. When I first entered Cornwall, I was in a really low place. There’s a train station in Falmouth, so I decided that I was going to get to Falmouth and quit. 'I walked for 3 or 4 days, pretty much non-stop and at times overnight, to get to Falmouth, because that’s where I was going to quit. And then I got to Falmouth, and the crew there were awesome. They were nice people, and they made me a cup of tea after four days’ walking and it put me back on a high. So it really is the crew that keep me going.’ He added ‘RNLI lifeboat crew volunteers save an average of 23 lives at sea every single day. In my opinion, they are heroes.
‘They put themselves right in the thick of what is Britain’s most unforgiving environment – our sea. They receive no government funding for their work and the majority of lifeboat crew are volunteers.’ His fundraising page is www.bt.com/DonateToLifeboats.

Lasting Powers of Attorney: one size doesn’t fit all Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
This is the third in my series of articles about Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs).
Many potential makers of an LPA (known as ‘the Donor’) prevaricate as they feel uncomfortable trusting, even their closest, family members or friends to manage their finances, or to make decisions about their health and welfare, should the time ever come when they cannot do so for themselves.
A major advantage of having a professionally drawn up LPA is that effective protections and guidance can be included in the LPA. Badly-worded guidance, restrictions, conditions etc within a home-made LPA can cause problems when having the LPA registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG), even to the extent of making the LPA invalid.
Increasingly, I am of the opinion that the intelligent and cautious use of preferences and instructions, in certain situations, not only gets across the personal wishes of the Donor, but provides clear directions and protections.
The retired Senior Judge in the Court of Protection, Denzil Lush started a lively debate when in the late summer he went on record as saying he would not put in place a LPA for himself. He said he would prefer to go for the full Court of Protection Deputyship appointment. This is where a formal application is made to the specialist Court charged with the managing of the affairs of the mentally incapable. Few practitioners would recommend this route, other than where there are very major issues which would make it better that authority from the Court is obtained for anything other than routine administration. Applying for the granting of such authority costs £400 each time plus all the professional costs incurred. There is a long wait whilst the matter grinds its way through the Court.
So how might I restrict and manage the power of my attorneys should I become mentally incapable of managing my own affairs? This is where your specialist solicitor can provide ‘value added’ service, and usually within their basic fixed-fee cost.
Examples of such preferences and instructions are as follows: I might wish to put a cap on the value of financial transactions (or a series of
transactions within a timescale) beyond a particular sum, say £5,000, carried out by a single attorney. Transactions for more than that sum could be stipulated to require all attorneys to authorise it.
You might state that your attorneys should produce accounts annually, to be circulated among them all; and if any concerns are raised then to be audited by a solicitor or an accountant; or, you might require such an audit in any event.
With a LPA for Health and Personal Welfare, you might wish to require all attorneys to be involved with life-sustaining treatment decisions, whilst allowing more routine matters to be decided by a single attorney. Here please do bear in mind that quick decisions often need to be made and having to gather all attorneys (even with modern communication systems) might be slow and so not in your best interests.
The important thing is that your LPA can be created as a bespoke document tailored to suit your special needs and wishes and therefore truly to provide peace of mind.

All Preachers Great and Small with Keith Skipper
Heavenly humour scales fresh heights in All Preachers Great and Small, the latest literary offering from Cromer-based writer, broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper.
This rousing hymn of praise is his 41st book with that distinctive Norfolk flavour and charts a marathon fundraising tour of over 100 local churches and chapels during the best part of 20 years.
Keith was accompanied by a team of talented performers first met during his years as a BBC Radio Norfolk presenter.
The Rt. Rev. Graham James, Lord Bishop of Norwich, wrote an uplifting foreword for the book and also did the
launching honours.
It features a cavalcade of outstanding characters, including famous diary-keepers James Woodforde and Benjamin Armstrong. The spotlight also falls on humble lay preachers, including some pioneering women, and parsons with remarkable staying power.
“Have you heard the one about?” went down a treat with cheese straws and sausage rolls.
“Our main mission was to put the fun into fundraising – and it worked a treat” he says. ”We encouraged laughter, clapping and applauding, all tied up in cheerful giving”.
All Preachers Great At the heart of it all is a and Small (Poppyland large silver collection Publishing, Cromer) of memorable yarns, is available at local verses and prayers bookshops for £9.95. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We would like to thank everyone who supported our Christmas Sale. It was lovely to see old friends and new at this event. Catching up with news on cats we have re-homed and meeting new prospective owners is always a pleasure, as is the opportunity to enjoy the company of our volunteers who helped at the sale. We thank them all for the time and help they give us to raise the money for the cats in care. Special mentions to Andrea for all the refreshments plus all the cakes, etc. on the cake stall and to Bren and Jenny for the wonderful craft items they make throughout the year for us to sell. At the time of writing, the money has still to be counted, so we will advise how much we have raised next time.
In the week prior to the sale we were delighted to be able to help two families who were reunited with their much loved cats. In the first instance, Gerard had escaped while being taken to his new home and been missing for over 6 months. As he was black and white there had been many possible sightings of him during this time but his owner did not think she would ever see him again. We were then contacted because a cat had been seen outside the chemists near Birchwood Surgery for two or three days and the ladies in the chemists thought it was possible that he was a stray. My first visit to check to see if he was chipped was unsuccessful as he had disappeared, probably due to the heavy showers that day. Paper collars were left at the chemists and it was agreed to put one on him when next he appeared, to try and see if there was an owner out there. The next afternoon a call was received from someone visiting the chemist who had spotted the collar on the cat. Armed with the chip reader I went down to the surgery and, much to my delight, found he had been chipped. A quick visit home to check the number on the microchip database and a couple of telephone calls later resulted in Gerard being reunited with his delighted owner within the hour.
he be seen. Two weeks later his owner contacted us for the loan of a trap as he had been spotted in someone’s garden quite close to the vets. Within 12 hours Smokey was safely back in his home with his much relieved and delighted owner.
We just love happy endings and were delighted to be able to help in such different ways to reunite these much loved cats with their owners.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter Loki, a lovely lively your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to little cat who has see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number blossomed since she is for vouchers only and will not be able to help has been in care with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

The situation with regard to the other cat was completely different. We received a call from his owner advising that her cat had escaped while visiting the vets. Smokey was added to our list of lost cats but we felt confident that he would be easier to spot as he was a pedigree cat. Advice was given on publicising his loss and the offer of a trap to catch him should

A Merry and Safe Christmas from Toll Barn Vets Heath Road, North Walsham, NR28 0JB. Tel 01692 407126
Christmas is fun for all the family including our pets! However, Christmas is a busy time for our 24/7 on site emergency service with hidden festive dangers …
Christmas Cake, Mince Pies and Fruit Bowls contain raisins, sultanas or grapes. Delicious for us but in pets these can cause kidney damage. They can also contain alcohol causing signs of intoxication, low blood sugar, blood pressure and temperature. Onions and Garlic can also cause vomiting and diarrhoea and potentially destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia). Mum’s sage and onion stuffing might taste great but it’s best to avoid giving pets “left overs”.
Chocolate contains theobromine which is toxic to dogs. The amount of theobromine varies with the type of chocolate (dark chocolate contains the highest levels). Depending on the amount and type of chocolate eaten, signs range from vomiting and
diarrhoea to wobbliness, seizures and changes in heart rhythm (arrhythmias). It is helpful to tell your vet how much and what type of chocolate was eaten to help determine whether a toxic dose has been reached.
Pets, especially dogs, have an exceptional sense of smell and often hunt out Bones, Foil or String from bins. Bones are often brittle and splinter easily causing blockages or tears within the oesophagus and intestine, whilst foil and string cause obstructions within the stomach and intestine. Many foods also contain high levels of fat increasing the risk of pancreatitis.
Around the house Tinsel and Ornaments are particularly attractive. If eaten these often cause blockages within the intestines. Candles and Fairy Lights are appealing to curious pets but can result in electrocution or burns if chewed so place them out of reach of naughty paws! Christmas trees are also potentially toxic as pine needles cause irritation of the mouth, vomiting, diarrhoea and weakness. Naughty puppies and kittens can also injure themselves

climbing Christmas trees so it is advisable to have a barrier to prevent access and keen supervision!
Lilies from festive bouquets can cause kidney failure in cats. If your cat comes into contact with lilies and the pollen sticks to their fur immediately place a buster collar or t-shirt to prevent them licking and contact your vet. Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias are also toxic causing vomiting, diarrhoea and depression. Mistletoe can also cause collapse and changes in heart rate whilst Poinsettia sap causes blistering of the mouth and stomach. We recommend all plants are kept well out of reach of inquisitive pets!
These problems are treatable if caught early enough so if you have concerns our 24/7 on site emergency service is available for our clients throughout Christmas and New Year on our normal number (01692 407126). Wishing you a safe and Merry Christmas from everyone at Toll Barn Vets!

Sheringham Little Theatre has teamed up with Norwich Puppet Theatre which has created the two stars for an all-action Wizard of Oz show.
Panto cast members will also be taught the art of puppetry in a workshop during rehearsals.
“Puppetry and acting are both about bringing a character to life, but while actors can use their faces, puppeteers have do it through arm actions. It is much harder than you can imagine,” added Mr Earnshaw. Toto and Coco were made by Norwichbased puppet maker Matt Reeve who said turning the director’s ideas into a character was “like creating a life”.
Working from sketches and constructing the two puppets from wire, foam, cord and fabric took more than four weeks.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB
On 9 January our speaker will be Mr Alex Bennett on the subject “Jewish Humour through the Ages”. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or business man and would like to join us at one of our future meetings you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information. Watch out for more news of our coffee morning on Tuesday 23 January!
On 7 November, after an excellent lunch, Cromer and Sheringham Probus club was treated to a very interesting talk, entitled ‘Museum Experiences’, by Lisa Little, who recently became the Museum & Collections Manager of the Sheringham Museum.
With a background in textile and costume conservation and as a social historian, she gave us an illustrated talk on some of the many interesting experiences and tasks of her career. Her first job, after years of study, was at Strangers’ Hall in Norwich (an old Elizabethan building), where she made accurate replica costumes for displays, SHERINGHAM WOODFIELDS SCHOOL interpreters and re-enactors. One task was to produce costumes for 100 people (mainly 01263 820520 children) with a budget of just £300! From Strangers’ Hall Lisa moved on to work for the Midday Supervisory Assistant Vacancy Norfolk Museums Service, where she ran events and study sessions. More recently she worked Sheringham Woodfields School is an outstanding complex needs school on the Nelson & Norfolk exhibition at Norwich in Norfolk for pupils aged 3-19. We have about 50 members both social and flying who build and fly a wide variety of models ranging from serene soaring gliders to sporty aerobatic types and elegant scale models. The club has a wealth of experience in its ranks to cater for all levels of ability and includes both instructors and examiners who are more than willing to encourage and assist any prospective modellers in pursuit of the hobby. Whether you are an experienced aero modeller or a raw beginner you will be made most welcome and we would love to meet you.
Our home is the full-size airfield at the Muckleburgh Military Collection in Weybourne, North Norfolk. This fantastic
site has a choice of two grass runways and has stunning views over the beautiful North Norfolk Coastline. The airfield is popular with full-size aircraft pilots too and we sometimes get visits from light aircraft, microlights and the occasional helicopter. Flying rules ensure that a safe and a happy relationship is maintained between the full-size and miniature aviation. Our Club caravan includes wc facilities and provides shelter in changing weathers or just a place to sit and take in the surroundings. We are also very fortunate in having the use of a superb inland flying strip at Binham, owned by a Club member where various flying events are held together with the occasional barbecue.
We are a very friendly and sociable Club and
AN INVITATION FROM
occasionally organise trips and outings to other modelling based events which have always proved popular amongst the members. This year we were pleased to support the Cromer Lifeboat Day where Club members exhibited many of their aircraft and were happy to chat with passers-by.(see photo) Our Club meetings are held at the Morley Club Sheringham, on the second Wednesday of each month from 7:30pm where we enjoy a pint and a natter over all things modelling.
If you have ever considered taking up the hobby or would like to join us, we would love to hear from you. Our Club secretary can be contacted at awjenkins@sky.com or you can apply via our extensive website at www.kellingfliers.co.uk which contains many pictures and articles about the Club and its activities
Do you like a good chat? Do you enjoy meeting people? Would you like a new interest?
If you answered yes to any of these, then why not join our friendly team of volunteers who work to enrich the lives of local older people? If you can spare anything from a couple of days a week to a couple of hours a month and live in the North Norfolk area, we would love to hear from you. No special experience is needed, if you can smile and say hello you can brighten up someone’s day and you will be surprised at how much fun you’ll have doing it. For further details call in at 35b Cremer Street, Sheringham or telephone 01263 821188.

2017/18 3rd Amateur Billiards Ranking Event – Groundhog Day for Nichols On 12 November at the Cambridge Snooker Centre Dave Nichols repeated the win he had in the second ABC tournament with a win over Teessider Darren Kell.
Nichols again took the highest break prize with a fine 155 break in the first round.
The win was not without its ‘lairy’ moments, a 124 break against Mark Graham with the last break of the match overcame a 60 point deficit after Grahams 95 break.
Similarly, in the semi, Phil Mumford had a 122 break, but Nichols countered that with a 123 and then ran out with the scores almost level with a 60 unfinished.
