Strong winds and heavy rain did not stop over 30 members from attending our February meeting at which Kathy Gray spoke about the many different types of garden open to the general public today. It is highly likely that visitors will pick up tips that are useful to their own garden be they large or small. Four different gardens were described to highlight the diversity of gardens in Britain.

Cromer and District Garden Society
Continued from front cover... Woollerton Old Hall Garden in Shropshire has a number of formal gardens divided by straight lines of yew, box or oak trees. One area has no bright colours, only pinks and greens while the “hot” garden has a vibrant look as its name implies. Logan Botanical Gardens in Galloway is a satellite garden of the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. It has a sub-tropical appearance because of the influence of the Gulf Stream and concentrates on plants from the southern hemisphere. Readers familiar with the echiums that grow freely in the garden outside Cromer Church will not be as surprised as other visitors to Logan who may not be familiar with this stunning plant. Cambridge University Botanic Garden was included in the talk as it is one of the best gardens for winter colour. Cornus ‘Midwinter Fire’ and daphne ‘Jacqueline Postil’ are suitable for any garden and provide colour and scent.
The talk ended with a plea to members to support Norfolk Plant Heritage. This organisation aims to protect and conserve those plants whose existence is under threat because of changes in fashion or the introduction of new varieties. Norfolk hosts seven national collections which aim to popularise individual plants. Peter Beales roses holds a collection of old roses, Tony Goode collects species crocuses, Simon Dodsworth in North Walsham has a collection of bearded irises and Richard Hobbs collects grape hyacinths. Norfolk Lavender and East Ruston Old Vicarage Garden also hold national collections of lavender and hardy cyclamen respectively.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 14 March at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Simon White from Peter Beales Roses in Attleborough will be giving advice on climbing and rambling roses for every situation. He is bound to bring along some roses to buy so do come along and hear what he has to say. Visitors £2.

Debunking of January Divorce Rush
Clapham & Collinge Family Law Update by Neale Grearson
Recent statistics that have been published throw doubt on whether there is a rush for people to start Divorce Proceedings in January. Historically the media has drawn attention to what has been dubbed “D Day” being the first Monday in January when allegedly the most number of divorces are started in a year.
The figures that have been recently produced reveal that in fact more divorces are started in other periods during the year than the first quarter of the calendar year. In fact the attention drawn to “D Day” by the media and Solicitors has been criticised as resulting in more marriages coming to an end! Correctly (but perhaps cynically) it has also been pointed out that with the substantial delays that there are now with the centralised divorce arrangements to be able to time the starting of a divorce to a particular day at the beginning of January is almost impossible – but it did make good headlines!
There is always a period (sometimes short and sometimes long) between somebody deciding their marriage is over and the Proceedings actually being commenced. Solicitors will see clients at all stages in the breakdown of a relationship although very often clients only seek to instruct a Solicitor when they have already decided that their marriage is at an
Cromer Times 536 March 3rd 2018
end and there is no prospect of a reconciliation. Solicitors will always talk to clients about the prospects of marriage guidance or counselling assisting but other than on rare occasions when an early meeting is sought very often people make decisions based on the ending of a relationship without first taking legal advice. It is the repercussions of that breakdown and possible divorce that people then take advice upon from a Family Solicitor.
There therefore appear to be no genuine “highs” or “lows” when more or less divorces are started during a year. However there are key “pinch points” when pressure is put on relationships and very often these relate to occasions when couples are forced into a 24/7 situation such as over Christmas or for long holidays together. It is therefore a little unrealistic to continue to talk about “D Day” or January being the key period when divorces are started.
Would You Pay Extra Tax To Fund Legal Aid? There has been a lot of recent national debate about whether everyone should accept an increase in their income tax to better fund the NHS system. When legal aid was cut some years ago for the majority of people this was done purely on financial grounds. In essence there was not enough money to go round and so choices had to be made. There were stringent cuts in the old family legal aid system now leaving many people not being able to afford
to take advice from a Solicitor.
It does seem that whatever political party will be in Government in the foreseeable future it is very unlikely that the legal aid system will change. Certainly there is nothing on the agenda of any of the parties to suggest that money will be set aside to resurrect the old legal aid system for civil work and in particular family advice. Would you agree to pay more income tax to be able to fund the divorce of somebody who financially cannot afford to pay for it themselves? Whilst this is simplistic in essence that is one of the choices that the Government has to make.
The emphasis therefore seems to be on who needs protection or support in priority to somebody else. Domestic violence has been identified as a key area where someone who is financially eligible should have legal aid for Family Proceedings but where do you draw the line? What about Proceedings that deal with children and their long-term future where there is no domestic violence – would you agree to pay more income tax so that those people can get legal aid?
To find out more or discuss your individual requirements in further detail, our dedicated Family Law solicitors will be delighted to help. Contact Neale Grearson for appointments at our North Walsham office on 01692 660230 or Sheringham on 01263 823398.

Mists on the Marshes
Mists on the marshes swirl round you, Like a widow’s veil, hiding the view. Chilled, damp, enveloping greyness Shifts and drifts, to misdirect you. Few venture out in this weather, For most know it’s far better to be Inside, whilst fog swirls round your door, Or you’ll merge with the mists from the sea. It’s so easy to think there’s no danger, If you’ve lived with mists many a year, But, silently, they will surround you, And what’s known becomes something to fear! Stay away from the mists on the marshes, It only takes one misguided turn, Then the mists will close round and enfold you, And there’s no way you’ll ever return! Frances Wraight

Curtains
My head is going round and round, I’m getting in a tizz. I’m measuring for curtains - what a pain it is! Inches into centimetres, turn them back again. How many yards or metres do I need for each curtain? Should they be ready-lined or with linings separate? Should they be plain or patterned, brightly coloured or sedate? So many choices I must make, it makes me want to cry! Slats or nets for privacy? These problems multiply! I think I’ll have a cup of tea and rest my weary brain, So I’m refreshed and ready, to face it once again. After hours and hours of this, I’m really in a bind, So stuff the nets and curtains - I’m going to have a blind!

NORTH EAST NORFOLK BIRD CLUB - Mannington Hall for Winter
The last few months have been a very busy time for The Sheringham Players as they prepare for their spring production in March. Rehearsals are always a lot of fun, and preparations for this production have been no exception, while the serious business of learning lines, preparing costumes and props and final preparations are completed by cast and crew. The production features two one act plays under the title 'Play On' and includes some well-known and
Birds of Woodlands and Farmland on Saturday 17 March 9am to 1pm - this walk is aimed particularly at those starting out birding, and the walk is designed to allow us to view common species. We will meet at the car-park to Mannington Hall (TG 141321). Mannington Hall is to the east of the minor road from Matlaske to Saxthorpe, and west of the minor road from Matlaske to Itteringham; it is signposted from both (brown signs) The postcode for the hall itself is NR11 7BB, and this will take you to the car-park which is obvious by the gates to the hall. There is an honesty box for car park (£2 donation requested), and toilets. From the car-park we will do a circular walk, including the hide, covering a range of habitats from wet woodland, farmland and parkland. The circular walk and can be very wet underfoot so wellingtons are advised. We anticipate being out for 4 hours. Children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. Leader Janice Darch

established members of The Players working on and off stage, and a number of new members who are also involved for the first time.
The first play directed by Tim Travers is a bittersweet comedy by Simon Williams entitled 'Happy Birthday Me ' and tells the story of retired actress Margot Buchanan who just wanted "a bottle of Claret and a couple of winners at Sandown" for her birthday. Instead she receives three separate visitors; her ex-husband Leo, an ageing film star fresh from a punch-up with a reporter, Leo's current wife Judy, and his latest mistress Sadie, an aspiring Shakespearian Juliet seeking Margot's acting advice.
Just as the inevitable fireworks kick off, Leo surprises everyone ... and then the kissogram shows up ... 'Happy Birthday Me' is a touching and very funny comedy based on the authors earlier full-length play 'Laying the Ghost'.

Cromer Chamber of Trade AGM
The Chamber holds its Annual General Meeting on 5 March. This is a chance look back on a successful year as well as to plan ahead.
The last 12 months have seen the Chamber represent Cromer at the Norfolk Show, produce better maps and signage for visitors to the town, establish efffective links with the Town and District Councils, and hold the first joint meeting with the Sheringham Chamber which was attended by our MP, Normal Lamb. The Chamber also serves as a valuable forum for its members, and makes good use of Facebook and other social media to advertise services and events, share information, and even offer early warnings about dodgy £10 notes cirulating in the town or sightings of known shop-lifters. This aspect came into its own during the difficulties we experienced after Carnival week.
For the coming 12 months, Chamber members will continue to coordinate our efforts to ensure we make the most of our high-profile events, such as the up-coming Crab & Lobster Festival. We will again be at the County Show.
We now have 67 local businesses as members of the Chamber. But the landscape is constantly changing. Every year, new businesses come while others go. The Chamber is always keen to welcome new members. It is only with the active participation of local businesses that we can achieve our main aim which is to promote the trading and business interests of the town and our members.
If you would like more information about the Chamber, please to our website at www.cromberchamber.org.uk.

New horizons for ‘Wissie’ - to guest at Beamish this year
M&GN society favourite, Hudson Clarke 0-6-0T 1700 Wissington is to visit the world famous open air museum at Beamish in County Durham this summer - new horizons indeed for the loco which spent almost its entire working life in the a very different industrial setting, feeding BSC’s largest sugar refinery in the Fens.
Society chairman Neil Sharpe says “We are delighted to have forged Peter Mayne 1700 Wissington pictured at links with yet another Sheringham station on M&GN railway. The Beamish Society Members’ Day, 7 October 2017 Museum approached us to the hire Wissington for three months over the summer. This is the peak time for the museum and so ‘Wissie’ will be seen by the large numbers of people who visitor the highly popular attraction over these months.”
Draft contracts were still under discussion at the time of writing but Mr Sharpe feels that “the deal is 99.9% done.” Wissie’s stay will involve around 60 steamings which will bring in enough cash to pay for its new tyres and, as Society Engineer Keith Ashford so eloquently put it, “leave enough change for a bag of chips”. “We are grateful to volunteer Rob Gibbons for introducing us to Beamish” says Mr Sharpe, “and to Keith Ashford for negotiating the deal.”
The loco will head north directly to Beamish after the end of its current stay at the Colne Valley Railway in June.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB
On Tuesday 6 February, members of Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club were given an excellent and enthusiastic talk by Simon Kinder, deputy head at Gresham’s School, and a history teacher for 14 years. The advertised title had been ‘Four Closet Communists’, though the talk mentioned others also who eventually became spies; many of these had been educated locally.
Throughout the ages the north of Norfolk has been vulnerable to attack, from Elizabethan plans to build a fort to protect against the Spanish Armada to ‘on the ground’ spying activity for the Germans in WWII. In the lead up to WWII a Dutch-owned property company built, for supposedly Dutch settlers (actually working for the Third Reich), red-roofed barns, which subsequently turned out to be embryonic airfield buildings!
Amongst many other interesting details, Simon mentioned that since the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, the USSR had become a “bogeyman” for some western countries. In the 1930s, rather than embarking on routine spying activity the Russians targeted the young, idealistic young men at major British universities. Many recruited at Cambridge and Oxford had been educated at Gresham’s School in Holt -- these included Burgess, McLean, Philby, Blunt & Cairncross, collectively known in the USSR as the ‘Magnificent 5’.
The talk was very well received and the audience’s questions were excellently fielded by Simon Kinder, who was thanked by the Chairman.
Our next meeting at The Links Hotel, West Runton, will be on Tuesday 6 March, when (after lunch) our speaker will be Paul Richards on the subject of “Kings Lynn and the Hanseatic League”. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or business man and would like to join us at one of our future meetings you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.
SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS CLUB
Apologies from the Press Secretary for a mistake in the last article. This should have read as follows : ‘Visit The Forum in Norwich on Saturday 24 March, between 9am and 5pm to enjoy meeting Lions and other like-minded people who enjoy being part of a Group for local fundraising and social activities. Age is unimportant - being young at heart is paramount. You may find that you would like to join one of the Lions Clubs in Norfolk. We look forward to meeting you there’.
LEARN LIFE SAVING CPR SKILLS on Tuesday 27 March at 7 pm at The Morley Club, Cromer Road, Sheringham. Free entry and tuition. British Heart Foundation are organising and presenting this event with Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club. We would encourage everyone to attend. There will be a raffle at the conclusion to raise funds for The British Heart Foundation.
Liz Bowler, Press Secretary
Elite Care Vacancy
We have a vacancy for an ‘On Call Person’ to take our out of hours calls. You will be paid a retainer and expected to cover emergency visits should they arise, i.e relief for a staff member who is sick or unable to work at short notice. You will be asked to cover 2 weekends in the month. This role would ideally suit someone with care experience who may be retired or wanting flexible hours. This is a home based position and a car is essential. If you are interested please contact us in Cromer on 01263 512528 to arrange an interview. Cromer Times 536 March 3rd 2018
Sails return to Horsey Windpump for first time since 2014
After extensive restoration work, Horsey Windpump – an icon of the Norfolk Broads – is soon to return to its former glory.
Last month the newly finished sails were lifted into place atop the National Trust landmark. Nine months after the cap was returned following conservation by the charity, Horsey Windpump was finally complete once again. Winter storms and heavy rain that led to higher than normal water levels on the Broads delayed the lift.
The Windpump has been without sails since 2014. After they were removed following winter storm damage rendered them unsafe. Subsequent investigations uncovered extensive rot in the cap and an ambitious project began to see this Broadland landmark restored to full working order.
Tim Whiting was the millwright who has been working on the project and has used the same

tools and techniques that built Horsey Windpump over a hundred years ago. He said “We’ve faced some challenges with windy weather and very wet ground conditions, so we had to go back to the drawing board and devise a new method for lifting the stocks and sails. Normally we would have used a crane but the ground is so boggy it would likely sink. Instead we used a cherry picker and a lorry with a HIAB (small crane), which are both much lighter and therefore better able to cope with the conditions on site. Horsey’s sails are the largest we have ever constructed and she looked very different by the time the installation was finished.
Now fitted, the stocks and sail frames will require the striking gear and shutters to be installed, which will enable the sails to be controlled and complete this phase of works. There is still a lot of internal works to be completed and this will be carried out over the next few months.
The National Trust’s project manager for this project, Paul Coleman, said “2018 will mark 75 years since Horsey Windpump’s sails last turned, after she was put out of action by a lightEst. Another arrival came in on 17 February. Willow was found out during the day time laying in the sun - not a good sign as it usually means a very sick hog. She was very cold, so the first thing to do was to gently let her get warm before offering food and water.
I have her on a heat pad which sits underneath her container so it gives a constant steady heat. She is eating a little which is a good sign and is on a course

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Several of the cats mentioned last time have now left for their new homes and there has been a lot of interest in those that are still with us. The remaining young cat from the previous multi cat household has also joined her new family.
Gandalf is looking much better as his scars are now healing. The other three cats were due to come in last week but, unfortunately, our volunteer who was due to look after them was ill so their arrival was put on hold. Hopefully these three lovely cats will be with us by the time you read this. We have had instructions from the lady who is kindly looking after them in the meantime, to make sure that Tripod, who as her name suggests only has three legs, gets special attention as she cannot scratch behind her ear. We are very grateful to this lady who is making sure they are well fed and safe until they can join us.
We have, on occasion, mentioned the colony of cats on the industrial estate. Although help has been given at several locations there, the bulk of the cats are on one site and are being fed regularly by a caring cat lover. We were therefore worried to see that there had been a large fire on the estate and were concerned that some of the cats might have been in the area and could have been harmed. When we called our friend he was able to reassure us that the cats he cares for were safe and well. There are still some cats there that have to be caught and neutered and we are keeping our fingers crossed that all are caught soon, before it gets 20

warmer and the cats start to breed again. Most are last year’s kittens which unfortunately evaded capture until too old to come into care to be socialised and found new homes. I believe most of the companies on the industrial estate are now aware that we are happy to help and, as well as paying for the adults to be Darcy, handsome young lad with neutered, will take the kittens lovely orange eyes into care providing they are still quite small. We are always happy to help anyone in this situation if they contact us.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats. org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club Tales from the Bowling Green ...
News from the Marrams Club House Cromer Marrams Bowls Club, on the Runton Road, have continued to be busy during the winter months.
Although the season is still several weeks away the ‘green team’ have remained busy during the winter tending the grass. It is already looking in prime condition for an early April start.
All the fixtures for the three leagues we are playing in in 2018 have been
arranged. These start at the beginning of May. Neil has been busy arranging nearly 30 friendly games, home and away around the county, and touring teams visiting Cromer.
Bernice has been busy arranging new ‘kit’ for the forthcoming season. A change of design for the club shirts and club zip jackets with the addition of a club waterproof jacket (hopefully not required during the season!)
If you have a desire to be a bowler, why not visit us before the season begins to find out what a friendly bunch we are! All abilities can be catered for. You would be most welcome at the club house on a Wednesday afternoon at 1.45pm (short mat bowling) or Friday evening at 7.15pm (bar open and short mat bowling). Hope to see you there or contact Neil on 01236 513901 for more info.
THREE YEARS ON – JORDAN LIFTS THE TROPHY beat the rapidly improving FOR THE FIRST TIME Ross Murray 3-1. Sanville Three years ago, playing off a handicap of +3 Matthew Jordan was runner up in Cromer Squash Club’s annual handicap tournament but last month, with his handicap increased by seven points to -4, he became the 29th different player to lift the prestigious handicap trophy as he overcame a four point handicap differential to beat Martin Sanville, who was contesting his fourth final in the past nine years, 17-15 15-12 15-9 in an absorbing and well contested final.
To just say that Jordan won in straight games would be doing the older Sanville a dis-service as the two opening games could easily have gone either way. The match was full of good long rallies , many of which Sanville dominated but Jordan’s anticipation and speed around the court proved decisive as he ensured he stayed in the rallies without giving Sanville the chance to play a winning shot. Cromer Bridge Club
Cromer Bridge Club is an old established club in Cromer that, with an ageing membership, finds itself seriously in need of new members.
We are a very friendly club that puts the emphasis on the enjoyment of the game.
We meet at The Cottage, Louden Road in Cromer on a Monday evening from 7pm to approximately 10pm. There are usually four to five tables and play is duplicate.
At its AGM in an effort to boost membership, the Club agreed to take the unusual step of opening the Club to players arriving without a prearranged partner and still be guaranteed a game for the evening.
Fit Together Walks
If you are new to Fit Together, please arrive 20 mins early. For more information contact Melanie Brown on 07766 259999.
Regrettably this is not an invitation to learn to play the game of bridge, rather your game will need to be of a reasonable standard, together with an understanding of basic bidding systems.
If you plan to come along to the Club please arrive by 6.40pm at the latest to allow time to sort out a partner.
Possibly you are one of those who play at home with friends or have played in the past then this offer could be for you. Why not come along, meet new people and make new friends. If you already have a partner, all the better come with them.
For more information please call Tony O’Shea on 01263 512951.
