100 Red Parasols on Cromer Pier

A procession of 100 women of all ages all carrying red parasols wound their way down to Cromer’s promenade and onto the pier to celebrate unity on International Women’s Day earlier this month.

The parade was organised by Dr Sarah Lowndes as part of an arts venture called Kunsthalle Cromer and also marked the centenary of some women – those who were over the age of 30 and householders – getting the vote in Britain.

Resurfacing work on Cromer’s West Promenade is completed

North Norfolk District Council-funded project moves a step nearer to being finished

Resurfacing work has been completed as part of North Norfolk District Council’s £1.5m investment in the regeneration of Cromer’s West Promenade.

It marks the latest step in the programme of long-term improvements that will help develop the tourism potential of the town and improve the facilities for the district’s residents.

Previous work completed as part of this project has included: - a new children’s play area with under water mural - a new catering kiosk - new facilities including showers, disabled showers and toilets - the refurbishment of the viewing turrets, including the reinstatement of windows - the installation of solar lighting along paths - the refurbishment of the iconic white steps, including new lighting - the installation of mains lighting along the prom and in the Anglian Water building and viewing turrets - external repairs to the Art Deco block - new beach hut sites - new disabled-accessible picnic tables - the re-organisation of disabled parking to improve pedestrian access

Cllr Becky Palmer, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure, said “The regeneration of the West Prom will help enhance Cromer as a premier tourist destination, and the fresh new look and improved facilities will also benefit residents.

“It is great news that the resurfacing work has been completed, as we move towards the completion of this programme of improvements. “The West Prom is already looking smarter than it has done for many years, and this work will make it even better.”

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

March’s meeting was very well attended and we were pleased to see six visitors on the evening as well as a new member. The reason for the good turnout had a lot to do with the speaker as Simon White from Peter Beales’ Roses knows more than most about the care of what is still seen as the country’s favourite flower.

Simon’s topic was focused on climbers and ramblers. Whether it is a wall, pergola, tree, arch, obelisk, fence or the garden shed that needs to be covered there is a rose that will do the job. Roses are a very versatile plant. Many varieties were recommended. “City of York” is a magnet for bees and butterflies and is particularly suited to the sandy soils of North Norfolk. “Chevy Chase” only has one flush but it lasts for up to eight weeks, “New Dawn” will repeat flower through to December while “Guinee”, if in full sun and good soil, has the most fantastic scent of all roses and it is a repeat flowering variety. A number of tips were passed on to ensure that growers get the best out of their plants. If against a wall or fence then roses should be planted at least eighteen inches away from the wall or fence and as ramblers and climbers can be vigorous then at least seven feet should be allowed between each plant if a line of plants is being planted to give them the space they need to grow properly. A 50/50 mix of skimmed milk and water will be a deterrent against mildew if you do not like the idea of using chemical sprays. Roses love water and it is not an exaggeration to say that they can never get enough, a point that is often overlooked in dry spells when gardeners will water lawns, vegetables and salad crops but not roses. Ramblers and climbers can be grown in pots as long as the pots are at least 15 to 18 inches wide. John Innes No 3 is the ideal growing medium. Pruning can be done with shears if the intricacies of pruning described in some gardening books seems complicated. The above is only a fraction of the advice and tips we were given. As a bonus the speaker brought along a wide variety of plants that were sold at less than half the retail price so it was a fine way to end what had been an excellent evening.

The meeting in April is taken up by our members’ spring show. With two exceptionally cold spells only recently behind us it is to be hoped that enough has survived to make it a worthwhile evening.

Cromer RNLI never stop preparing for a ‘shout’

Even though adverse weather conditions prevented them from carrying out their usual Sunday morning launch practising, volunteers at RNLI Cromer were still busy when the crew participated in dry training.

REPORT OF THE AGM OF THE STRAND CLUB

As we looked back over the previous year, we felt we deserved a gentle pat on the back. Our Club has gone from strength to strength under Jackie's expert chairmanship. Our committee makes a good team and the fun we have reflects in the atmosphere of the Club.

We have had many entertaining afternoons including a musical quiz by Miriam and Tony and a very interesting talk by Eddie Anderson. The Marsham Belles delighted us at Christmas and joined us in enjoying the Christmas buffet.

There were various tasks which included undertaking a challenge to move dead Fred from one side of the gantry to the other. Splitting into two teams, each team had to set up a breaches buoy system and move dead Fred successfully.

Now we can look forward to the coming year with talks from Seal Watch in April, Ben's Workforce (part of the Benjamin Foundation) in July and a representative from Stalham Fire Museum in September.

After the business of the AGM was complete, Jackie taxed our brains with a visual quiz. She showed us a series of close-ups of places in and around Overstrand. We recognised most of them after a lot of hmming and hahing! They were hard though and we felt we had more than earned our tea and biscuits afterwards.

Later activities involved updating with RNLI crew Horizon notices, local knowledge LOP, initial training PPE, roles and responsibilities and fire evacuation plan. An excellent morning from our hardworking crew.

Our meetings begin at 2pm on the second Wednesday in every month except August. Please look out for our posters dotted around Overstrand and feel free to come along and try us out any time. We just charge visitors £2 at the door to cover refreshments and raffle tickets are available separately. AGEWISE

A free event promoting living well and maintaining independence

A Concert full of light

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society return to Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 28 April at 7.30 pm to present a wonderful programme of 21st century choral music celebrating the theme of Light. This may be a 'modern' music concert but guaranteed to be highly melodic and no fear of dissonance! This promises to be an evening of beautiful music with a line-up of top class soloists.

Musical Director, David Ballard says "This might just be the project I’ve worked on as a musician that I’m most excited about. I don’t care if you like choral music or not you need to come and listen. Great contemporary music, great soloists, and a choir who want to show you they love it. Be there."

David's enthusiasm is infectious and no wonder when you consider that the concert will feature a major work by Howard Goodall CBE who will be familiar to many as the presenter of many television programmes with a musical theme and as the prodigious composer of musicals, choral music and a multitude of television theme music such as Blackadder, Mr Bean and, possibly, most popular The Vicar of Dibley. Eternal Light: A Requiem was originally commissioned by Rambert Dance Company as a choral-orchestral-dance piece and has quickly earned a firm place in the choral repertoire.

Also on the programme are works by the widely performed American composer Morten Lauridsen, the Norwegian Ola Gjeilo and the Devon-based composer of sacred music Graham Keitch whose works are rapidly becoming popular and frequently performed by choirs and in cathedrals around the world. This is a concert not to be missed.

Tickets £12 (£15 on the door), under 18s FREE are available now from Sheringham Little Theatre box office 01263 822347 or online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Nuclear Room and new Tornado Cockpit go on show at Soviet era art exhibition last autumn, which Radar Museum for new season

A restored Nuclear War Reporting Room, a Tornado Cockpit and a German WWII aircraft canon are among the exciting new attractions at the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum as it opens for RAF 100 Anniversary season.

The popular RAF Radar Museum, near Horning in The Broads, opened on Saturday 24 March for the 2018 season. The once top secret radar establishment occupies the site of the world’s longest continuously operating radar station and is the biggest museum in North Norfolk. The museum has doubled its opening times and will now be open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday through to the end of the autumn half term at the beginning of November.

New this season is the restored Nuclear Reporting Cell, which tells the story of how the base was used in the Cold War to warn and track a nuclear attack and fallout if one occurred. The Nuclear Reporting Cell was formerly staffed by the Royal Observer Corp (ROC) and will have giga counters and fall out protective suits on display. It will include information on warning times of attack and monitoring and surveillance. It will also have information on the Dooms Day Clock used to measure the

likely risk of a worldwide nuclear catastrophe. Also recently acquired is the German Dornier 217 canon retrieved from the Dornier which was shot down by a crew from 68 Fighter Squadron, based at Coltishall, on the night of 30 July 1942 over Salthouse Marshes.

A Tornado Cockpit joins the two other cockpits this season and will be housed with the Jaguar cockpit in the ‘hanger room’. The Tornado saw active service in the first Gulf War and the aircraft’s full history will form part of the display. Steps will enable visitors to look inside the cockpit and also to access the rear of the cockpit to experience the view that the co-pilot would have.

The museum will be celebrating the centenary of the RAF which was formed on 1 April 1918. The museum will have a timeline showing the important milestones in the RAF and Radar and the base’s own history. The museum will also have a number of special activities throughout the year to celebrate and commemorate the anniversary. The museum will have 3 special exhibitions this year, building on the success of its

brought lots of first time visitors to the museum, especially women and children.

Over the winter the museum has been busy doubling the size of its reception and shop area. This has enabled the museum to sell some exciting and unique new gift ranges and second-hand books. A new disabled access ramp has also been installed so that everyone can now use the same entrance.

Museum Manager, Gregory Hayman said ‘The museum has added another room to its existing 20 rooms meaning that we can have more exciting and interesting exhibits on display from our collection of over 10,000 items. We believe that we have things of interest here for everyone, from those who served in the forces to people who want to know about the part radar played in the Battle of Britain and terrifying reality of the Cold War and the threat of nuclear destruction.

The museum has also improved its offer to schools, producing learning journeys and materials that will feed into more parts of the school curriculum.

Says Gregory ‘The role that the museum plays in developing our offer as a provider of education materials is important in encouraging young people to think about careers in science and technology.

The museum is open from 10am - 5pm from Saturday 24 March and in addition to the regular open days, is also open on Easter Bank Holiday Monday and the two May bank holiday Mondays as well as the summer one.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

When I first wrote this article, Bella was still missing. However, I was delighted to receive a call this morning to say that she had been trapped and, although a little thinner, was now safely home again. In this instance the cat escaped from its carrier on leaving the vets as the door had not been secured properly. As Bella was an indoor cat she was particularly vulnerable. Fortunately, someone living close by gave permission for the trap to be set in his garden. We find most people, especially cat lovers, are only too happy to help in these circumstances and, although on occasions, other cats, and even hedgehogs, have been caught first, they can empathise with the person who has lost their cat. We have helped lots of people over the years by lending traps to catch the cats and know how stressful this is for them. Like most escapees, it took a few days for Bella to show her face but, from experience, we find that very few move far from the place where they were lost. The owner is very grateful to the gentleman who helped by letting her put a trap in his garden, the second time this has happened recently. Let’s hope there is not a third!

Now that spring is in the air the kind people with the two colonies where we still have cats to catch to be neutered are now setting their traps again. One cat was recently caught and taken to the vets but, unfortunately, it had already been neutered, as was discovered on the operating table. The original

Hedgehog Haven

The mild spell of weather saw all the hedgehogs in the outside huts awake from hibernation. It's good to know they have all survived.

With this in mind, Luna and Happy were collected by their finders to be released into an enclosed area, where they have provided nest boxes and food, prior to releasing into the wild. Henrietta arrived on 15 March. Luckily her finders knew she was small (350grms) and, with another cold spell coming, she would be struggling. She is eating well and should not have to be in care to long.

operation took place before we, and our vets, became involved with the colony. Our vets have now tipped her ear, which is the usual practice when dealing with feral colonies, so she if she is caught in the trap again she can be released immediately.

Several of the cats taken in from the multi cat household recently have now left for new homes. As Rosie, a very friendly little cat who often happens there was lots of loves to play interest in Tripod, the three legged cat and, after having a dental, she hardly had time to settle before leaving us. Spotty, Darcy and Taz have also had interest in them and, providing their homes are suitable, they too could be leaving soon. This leaves Treacle a lovely friendly black girl, Arwen a gentle black and white girl and Gandaulf, our lovely white lad. I am happy to report that Gandaulf, as expected, is quite a handsome fellow now that his scars have disappeared. Four slightly older cats have also come into care recently. Rosie and Milly are about 7 years old, and Pepper and Archie, two lovely big boys who are slightly younger. Ludo and Leonard two young cats are also looking for new homes and, again, there has already been some interest in these cats.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

An update on Willow (pictured), as she is elderly and I have discovered she is also blind, she will be staying here with me. She is quite content and as you can see loves tucking into her bowl of chum (3 a day!).

I will be at North Walsham Garden Centre on Norwich Road on Easter Saturday and Monday between 10am to 3pm with hedgehog information and ‘Meet a Hedgehog’, (possibly Willow) - come and say hello.

“A friend for life” is how Ronald Bloxham describes North Norfolk health made following a hospital stay, with Richard supports the partnership. “Ronald and Richard volunteer Richard Fry

Ronald was referred to the service through an integrated care coordinator from his GP practice to have social contact as he lived alone and also to support him to use his laptop to send emails and use the internet.

Richard applied to become a volunteer with Voluntary Norfolk’s North Norfolk Health Volunteers Service. He applied as he wanted to have that connection with an older person again after having such a close relationship with his grandparents who he has sadly lost. He also wanted to ‘give something back’ and find a work/life balance.

Following their introduction, Ronald joyfully reports that they have become “great friends”, quickly developing a great rapport. His partnership with Richard has helped him settle into residential care, a decision he

continuing to visit him. They both enjoy each other’s company immensely and look forward to seeing each other.

During each visit there is a mutual respect and a great deal of chatting about all sorts of topics. Richard describes his visits as giving him a “different dimension to my working week and it’s nice to give something back”. They both agree that they equally get something out of the befriending partnership and that it shouldn’t just be one sided.

“Volunteering is always a two-way street” says Natalie Hickman, the Voluntary Norfolk coordinator who made the introductions and

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club On Tuesday 6 February, the Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club was given a lively and most informative talk by Dr Paul Richards, entitled ‘England and the Hanseatic League: the Wash Ports’. Dr Richards, an honorary alderman and former mayor of Kings Lynn, focussed his talk on Kings Lynn and on Boston, while bringing some other ports, notably Hull and Ipswich, also into the picture.

It was amazing to discover how important both Kings Lynn and Boston were in past centuries, both for the export of cloth and wool and for the import of goods such as furs, wood and wax from Hanseatic ports in the Baltic. These ports were significant for trade as they both had large hinterlands and this fact is reflected in the history of these towns’ buildings and churches.

are a great example of how a befriending volunteer not only enhances the life of the person they’ve visiting, but can make a big difference to their own life too! Whilst there is a lot of loneliness across Norfolk and beyond, it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort to transform the situation for both the volunteer and the person they visit”.

Voluntary Norfolk is keen to hear from anyone across North Norfolk, who would like to become a Health Volunteer. If you are 18 years old or over, enjoy meeting and spending time with other people, and can put aside an hour or so a week to change a life and make a new friend, please contact Natalie Hickman on 01263 519454 or natalie.hickman@voluntarynorfolk.org.uk

The Hanseatic League was renewed in 1980 with the name Hansa and has 190 member towns from 16 different countries, including four towns in the UK. Two of these are the Scottish ports of Aberdeen and Leith. After time for questions, the Chairman thanked Dr Richards for a most enjoyable and well-illustrated talk.

Our next meeting at The Links Hotel, West Runton, will be on Tuesday 3 April, when (after lunch) our speaker will be Chris Boxall on the subject of ‘Houghton Hall and Walpole’.

If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or business man and would like to join us at one of our future meetings you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

REPORT OF THE AGM OF THE STRAND CLUB

or

As we looked back over the previous year, we felt we deserved a gentle pat on the back. Our Club has gone from strength to strength under Jackie's expert chairmanship. Our committee makes a good team and the fun we have reflects in the atmosphere of the Club. We have had many entertaining afternoons including a musical quiz by Miriam and Tony and a very interesting talk by Eddie Anderson. The Marsham Belles delighted us at Christmas and joined us in enjoying the Christmas buffet.

Our meetings begin at 2pm on the second Wednesday in every month except August. Please look out for our posters dotted around Overstrand and feel free to come along and try us out any time. We just charge visitors £2 at the door to cover refreshments and raffle tickets are available separately. For further information please contact Jackie, Chairman, on 720866, or Chris, Secretary, on 579433. We look forward to meeting you.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club Tales from the Bowling Green ...

So, most of us have had to survive the winter blasts, unlike our President Philip who had his annual sojourn in Oz (not really envious!), and here we are in spring.

The frozen pipes have been repaired and the clubhouse is ready, with only a week to go before we can get on the green, weather permitting(!). Members and friends, old and new are very welcome to our open mornings on Saturday and Sunday, 7/8 April at 10am. Come for a coffee and find out what we are about. For a playing membership fee of just

Golf reduces the risk of heart disease by 30%

More information can be provided by Edna or Neil 01263 511155 or 513901.

The short mat season cup competition is reaching its climax after two high quality semi finals saw Neil C defeat James and Neil P overcome Janice. So the long and short of it is that the men are competing in the final and leading the ‘league’ competition also - well done Bob and James! The short mat afternoons have been very well attended, six (fool) hardy souls even turned up during the week of the attack from the ‘Beast from the East’!

The ground-breaking study from the Sport Industry Research Centre (SIRC) at Sheffield Hallam University established that regular golfers reduce their risk of dementia and coronary heart disease by 30%.

In addition, the study found that golfers are 14% more likely to report good health than non-participants.

The Links Golf Club in West Runton is offering the opportunity to give golf a try, or return to the game, in a fun and relaxed environment with a series of group lessons.

The 4 week beginners’ course starts on Saturday 14 April, 9am - 10am. Total cost is just £25 per person and equipment is provided by the PGA Qualified golf professional.

Enjoy more of the Links Lifestyle, including the swimming pool, tennis court and newly refurbished gym where a full timetable of classes are available.

ukactive Research Director Dr Steven Mann said “We know that being physically active helps reduce risk of dementia by up to 30 per cent and golf is a great way to achieve recommended exercise levels as it is a sport that can be enjoyed by all”.

Local fishing boat calls out Cromer RNLI

Cromer RNLI was asked to launch its inshore lifeboat earlier this month when a request came in from the ‘Irene D’ a local fishing boat, which had engine problems.

Once the Photo: Paul Russell crew had been paged, the ‘George and Muriel’, Cromer’s D class inshore lifeboat was launched. The crew were soon on scene just off East Runton and assistance was given to the fishermen.

An hour later the inshore lifeboat had returned to its station, was washed down refuelled and made ready for its next launch.

It was a significant occasion for RNLI Cromer as the inshore lifeboat had returned the previous day after its maintenance checks. It was the first outing for the new tractor and also for Reis Khalil – who had recently finished his training to be a volunteer.
