New MRI goes live at Cromer and District Hospital

A state-of-the-art MRI machine has gone live at Cromer and District Hospital as part of a £8m imaging equipment replacement programme.

A new Signa Artist was used for the first time on Monday 22 February after the hospital’s old MRI magnet was craned out of the building in November. The development at Cromer and District Hospital will lead to improved quality of imaging and an enhanced experience for patients in the local area.

It is part of a £8m project to replace vital imaging equipment at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which will see the replacement of four MRI scanners and a CT scanner at the Trust. An additional CT scanner will also be added in the Radiology department at NNUH.

Shelley Johnston, Deputy Lead MRI Radiographer, said Cromer’s old MRI was more than ten years old and around 20 patients a day will be scanned using the new machine.

“It is a huge improvement in technology with more advanced imaging and offers a wider variety of examinations and diagnostic quality. It provides more space with a wide bore and an enhanced patient experience,” she said.

The scheme follows ‘Aged Assets’ government funding that was announced in 2019, as well as benefiting from Adapt and Adopt Covid-19 funding. The project also continues at apace at NNUH with the arrival of a new CT scanner on Sunday 14 February and one of the old MRI was craned out of the building over the weekend.

A Note from the editor

Northrepps 'Poppyland' Branch of The Royal British Legion

Things are looking up at last. At time of writing this, nearly 40% of the adult population have had their first vaccine, we have a plan for the easing of lockdown and the sun has started to shine, albeit intermittently. It feels like there is some light at the end of a very long tunnel. We can tentatively make plans for the months ahead and look forward to being able to meet family and friends again. It is still important to observe the rules, but this final push will hopefully mean the end of lockdown living (or existing).

With no Branch Meetings being allowed to take place at the moment, decisions as to all our large events scheduled for this year, has proved to be very challenging indeed.

It is with great disappointment that we have had to cancel our Armed Forces Day to be held here at Northrepps on the 26th June this year, for the second time, as the easing of lockdown is due to take place on the 21st June, also the many things which we would need to order including marquee, we have made contact with all those supporting us, and it is very fair to say that they were not surprised at our decision, but we are so pleased and thank them in advance for supporting us next year on Saturday 25th June, 2022 same venue.

Right from the very young to the elderly, they were so looking forward to this. Other big events, the Dedication of our new Branch Standard and Memorial Services, these will be re-scheduled for 2022, and where there are families involved who have to travel to Norfolk for these, we are in close contact with them, and they are very supportive of our decision.

It must be a relief for businesses to be able to welcome us back soon, especially in North Norfolk where our local economy relies on leisure and hospitality so heavily. I suspect we will all have a newfound appreciation for the simple pleasures we took for granted before this pandemic.

Branch Meetings - The White Horse at Overstrand are looking forward to welcoming us back on Monday 6th September 2021, and you may say this is a long time, but we have taken into consideration from all ages of our membership, that they feel June would be too soon for some to want to start socialising, and indeed, many will not have received their second jab. So, September it is - our first meeting will be very short and members can then socialise.

It is Mothering Sunday on 14th March, don’t forget that card and flowers. Clocks go forward on 28th March, an hour less sleep but lighter evenings will help dispel the winter blues. Then Easter is upon us, time for renewal and the promise of better things to come.

Whatever you are doing to get into the spring vibe, enjoy your March magazine.

Hopefully Covid-19 will have backed off, and we can look forward to a better 2022.

Splash to Make Way for the New Leisure Centre in Sheringham

North Norfolk District Council is seeking to take advantage of the current closure of the Splash Leisure Centre in Sheringham to bring forward the completion of its replacement.

The uncertainty surrounding the date of the reopening of leisure centres in England, and the inevitable timescale before they can operate at full capacity, has led North Norfolk District Council to conclude that this hiatus should be used to speed up the completion of the new Sheringham Leisure Centre by demolishing the Splash earlier than had originally been intended.

Excellent progress has been made on the new development, despite the many interruptions of the past year. The new building is scheduled for completion in August this year; however, the demolition of the Splash had not originally been scheduled until after the new centre had opened, in order to provide continuity for users. This would have meant that the car park and landscaping would not have been completed until the end of November 2021.

By reprogramming the works, so that the demolition can take place in parallel with the completion of the new building, Construction company Metnor can save several months on the current plan. Given that it is unlikely that the Splash would be in use (certainly not to capacity) for much of that time, Everyone

Active, which operates the centre for North Norfolk District Council, is wholly supportive of this approach.

The Council has therefore decided to fast-track the completion of the new leisure centre, so that the whole site, including the car park, will be open to local people and visitors this summer.

Everyone Active has done an excellent job of maintaining the operation of the Splash pool, fitness suite and exercise studios, when they have been allowed to open since July 2020, but with the restrictions of social distancing, enhanced cleansing and the interruptions of intermittent lockdowns, that has been increasingly challenging. The costs and the resources needed to remobilise the facility after the current lockdown (whenever that is) are not justified for the short period for which it is likely to be open and the reduced capacity it will inevitably have. The building’s running costs alone for the four-month period (were it to operate from April to July) would amount to some £51,000 and the costs of remobilising the building equate to around £6,500.

The new Sheringham Leisure Centre will have a 6-lane, 25m main pool, a 13m x 8m learner pool with moveable floor, a splash pad with water play features and two community rooms for flexible use. There will be a café area on

the ground floor with spectator viewing into the pool. Upstairs there will be a fifty-station health & fitness suite, a dance/ activities studio covering 200sqm, a spinning studio 96sqm all of which will enable twice as many people to participate in sport and exercise than can currently at the Splash.

The building has been designed to Sport England’s accessibility standards to ensure as many people as possible can access the wide mix of facilities.

The new leisure centre has been designed to be highly energy efficient, with state-of-the-art windows and doors to prevent heat loss and high-performance insulation for hot water pipework, as well as ‘presence/absence detection’ lights for areas with limited use.

It incorporates renewable energy systems such as solar thermal collectors for water heating and air source heat pumps.

The name and logo for the new Leisure Centre will be revealed in the coming months as the building nears completion. Anyone interested in tracking the progress on site can view the time lapse video hosted on the Council’s website.

Over 1000 extra people have been helped

by Cromer and District Foodbank during the pandemic. Yet the number of volunteers manning the foodbank was greatly reduced as many were aged over 70 and shielding.

Volunteer at Holt, Mary Moverley, speaking on zoom for Sheringham’s February Sustainability Saturday, explained how the remaining volunteers continued to help staff the warehouse and office, the collecting and delivering, and the distribution centres in Aylsham, Cromer, Holt, Sheringham, Stalham, and North Walsham. A new centre at Wells Community Hospital is being set up.

In exchange for an e-voucher number given over the phone, enough nutritionally balanced food for three days is provided to people in sudden crisis, and since the pandemic, with a noticeable increase in families.

Voucher referrals are received from agencies such as Citizen Advice Bureau, General Practices, Children Services and Schools. As well as food, extra items may include “Canny

The Foodbank is able to use money donations as well. Primarily set up to reduce food waste they also are a place people can get food in an emergency.

In January 2021 70% of people using the provision at Merchant’s Place, Cromer have never needed to use a foodbank. Sites are at Aylsham Community Fridge, Merchant’s Place Cromer, The Tree House Holt, Stalham and The Community Shop North Walsham.

The Government have announced an expansion to the shielded list, with an extra 1.7 million additional people nationally required to shield.

Coastal visits and house parties lead to lockdown fines

Visitors to Norfolk’s coastal areas and people hosting house parties were among 160 people fined for breaching lockdown rules on the weekend of 28th February.

A large number of fixed penalty notices were given to people who had travelled to visit the coast, in particular Sea Palling, Wells and Hunstanton. People had travelled from as far as Leicestershire, London, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire.

Four house parties were also disrupted over the weekend. Two of these were children’s birthday parties in Great Yarmouth. A number of adults who were present at one of the parties where more than 15 people had gathered were issued with £800 fines. House parties with less than 15 people were also found in Attleborough and Thetford, with those attending receiving £200 fines.

In addition to fines, 132 people were given

warnings. Lockdown measures remain in place, with a requirement for people to stay at home, only leaving for a reasonable excuse.

T/Assistant Chief Constable Julie Wvendth said: "We have seen a number of blatant breaches this weekend, many by people who live outside of the county who have travelled to coastal areas. A combination of better weather, lockdown fatigue and the impending easing of restrictions will no doubt influence some people’s behaviour.

"However, the ‘stay at home’ rule remains in place and while the roadmap out of lockdown offers new confidence, we still need to take action now to get us there.”

Dr Louise Smith, Norfolk’s Director of Public Health, said: "Most people in Norfolk have done an excellent job of respecting the rules so far and have played a key part in the fall in infections rates we’re seeing now. It is

important that we keep to the rules and stay local to keep numbers of cases down. I know most people will, but where they don’t I support the police in taking enforcement action.”

Cllr Andrew Proctor, Chair of the Norfolk Engagement Board and Leader of Norfolk County Council, said: "The rules are clear – we must stay in our local area for most things including exercise, in order to curb the spread of the virus. The Prime Minister has set out a clear roadmap for the coming months and we need everyone in Norfolk to pull together in that time to keep the number of cases low. Now is not the time to ignore the restrictions that are in place for the protection of everyone locally and nationally.”

Council Approves 21/22 Budget

North Norfolk District Council’s budget for 2021-22 was approved at a full Council meeting on 24th February.

Councillors voted after a debate to approve the proposed budget, which includes a freeze on NNDC’s Council Tax precept residents will be asked to pay and a commitment not to reduce any key services.

£187,000 in a full year by no longer using more expensive bed and breakfast accommodation and providing a better form of housing for homeless residents - Information and Advice Budget doubled, with an extra £70,000 to provide support to residents who are vulnerable and/ or in need of advice and support in the current challenging environment.

Parking charges in Council-run car parks will not increase and the budget agreed will also see the Council inject £550,000 into its reserves, to help ensure key NNDC projects are delivered effectively during the financial year.

These include: - New leisure centre to open in Sheringham in August and within budget - Roll-out of a £1.4m programme to support more affordable homes - Tree planting scheme to plant 110,000 trees in North Norfolk by 2023 under Council’s Green agenda to continue, supported by a £300,000 budget and with two dedicated environment officers appointed - Seafront chalet refurbishments in Cromer and Sheringham with a budget of £101,000 - Implementation of £3m North Walsham Town Centre Heritage Action Zone regeneration scheme to revitalise and re-energise this important North Norfolk town centre - More temporary housing accommodation being obtained by the Council for residents in high housing need, with 11 properties bought or being purchased to date. This is projected to save the Council

Deputy Council Leader and Cabinet Finance Portfolio holder Cllr Eric Seward highlighted the Council’s sound financial position in being able to freeze Council Tax while maintaining and improving the Council’s services.

He said: “I am delighted that the Council has approved a budget that does not burden householders at this difficult time with an increased charge for the services it provides. I am particularly pleased that the Council is able to do this whilst making no cuts to our services and continuing with our ambitious investment programme to improve them.”

Cromer Pier to Reopen from March 8

Following the Government’s latest announcement on Monday regarding changes to national Covid-19 guidance, we can confirm Cromer Pier will re-open from March 8 for those taking exercise or meeting with one friend in accordance with the updated regulations.

The pier will not be open for fishing, crabbing or any other activities until further notice, pending any future changes to the national guidelines.

The Gallant Gardener - Know your Onions What do you know about the humble onion?

A vegetable that we encounter every day, a vegetable that brings us flavour and enhances the blandest dish! Where did it come from? It was first found in Asia and was one of the first used by the Egyptians more than 3,500 years ago. It has been found in early China, Rome and across the Atlantic with the native American Indians. It is thought to have

been brought to our shores by the Roman occupation. From one plant comes several different cultivars under the family term of Allium: -Shallots, garlic, leeks, chives, spring onions and welsh onions to name some.

Once the tops start to fall over, turn them away from the sun, so this allows the sun to ripen the bulb and just run your finger around the outside and take away any soil.

Now is the time to start sowing or planting onions for a crop to be harvested in the late summer - early autumn. Onions can be grown from seed and the seed needs to be sown in a large tray or small modules and then pricked out into larger pots or modules, ready for planting out. A different way of growing onions is to purchase what are known as onion sets, these have been grown last year and are very small bulbs ready to be planted out.

Most onions prefer an open, sunny site but will tolerate some shade. They need a cultivated soil that has been manured for a previous crop.

Make sure the soil is firm and friable (raked down to a fine tilth). Plant the onions out with 6”or 15 cm between plants and 12” or 30 cm between rows.

In my photograph is shown a way of growing more onions in a reduced plot by starting five plants in a pot and then planting them out like that, you will get smaller bulbs, however many people like that smaller size.

As the onions grow, be careful to hand weed between plants as they are shallow rooting, apply a nitrogen rich fertiliser or wood ash to the onions which will encourage bulking out of

Dig up the bulbs when dry and then lay out in a dry airy place to dry further. Once they are dry, clean the outside skins and hang up in a dry, cool, frost free place.

Onions are easy to grow, however they do suffer from drought and you must not let the onion bed dry out as this can cause bolting.

This means they go straight to seed as they are under stress.

Onions do suffer from onion fly, downy mildew and onion white rot. The latter can be very difficult, as it causes the bulb to rot from the bottom. It can last in the soil for a considerable number of years and will infect other onions crops if planted in the same place.

Council urged to launch Hedge Fund to tackle snow drifts

With the day's lengthening & Spring just around the corner, over the next 4 weeks I will be releasing those who had to be overwintered due to their small size. They are usually released back to the same area where they were found provided food & water is offered. Hogs will be awaking from hibernation, please keep an eye out for them, as they will be very hungry & thirsty, a dish of meaty dog, cat food or dry hedgehog food along with a dish of water put out at dusk, will be most welcome.

Norfolk County Councillor Ed Maxfield has called for a local ‘Hedge Fund’ to restore hedgerows after days of snow chaos in the county’s roads.

“Villages like Northrepps, Antingham and Paston in my division have seen roads blocked by drifting snow well after it stopped snowing. The loss of hedgerows has contributed to that and the County Council should step up and help to tackle the problem. The Conservatives want to give each County Councillor a £10,000 to spend on roads in their area. If they took just £2,000 of that they could create a £150,000 ‘Hedge Fund’ to spend on returning hedges to the county’s fields.

Councillor Maxfield, who represents Mundesley Division as an Independent, says the fund could see miles of new hedges planted each year.

Employment Law: Furlough Leave Frequently Asked Questions

The furlough scheme, also known as a the coronavirus job retention scheme, has been in place for almost a year since it began in March 2020 and with it has come a large amount of questions for employees placed on furlough leave. By December 2020, 9.9 million people had been furloughed with 1.2 million employers using the furlough scheme. The scheme has become bigger than ever anticipated for the UK and has helped saved millions of jobs throughout the pandemic. However, a scheme this size will inevitably have issues, some of which will be discussed below. This article will answer some common questions employees have on the furlough scheme.

I was placed on furlough without my consent. Can an employer do that?

Furlough leave is a variation of your employment contract. Usually, your employer cannot vary your employment contract without your consent. If they have done so, and you have objected to the change, this could be in breach of your employment contract. We would recommend in this circumstance you seek legal advice and take a copy of your employment contract with you.

My employer has furloughed me for my full working hours but is still expecting me to work. I have complied because I do not want

to lose my job. Legally, is this right?

The simple answer is no. If you are furloughed for your full working hours then you should not be working for your employer in any capacity. You can volunteer or work elsewhere but working for your employer whilst they are claiming furlough payments from HMRC is likely to be fraud.

I have been on furlough leave but my employer has just informed me I might be made redundant. Can they do this?

The short answer is yes, this is possible. If there is a genuine redundancy situation, for example a business closure, then it may not be possible for your employer to keep you on furlough leave. If you are unsure and want further guidance, again we would recommend seeking legal advice.

I do not think I am being paid correctly under the furlough scheme. What can I do?

In this situation, your first step would be to speak to your employer. If you cannot reach a suitable conclusion just by speaking to your employer, you should seek legal advice on the situation. You may be eligible to bring a claim for unpaid wages.

My employer has requested I return to work but I do not think it is safe. What are my options?

If you do not feel your workplace is safe, inform your employer immediately and do not go into the workplace. Your employer should try to work with you to resolve your concerns.

If your employer tries to dismiss your concerns and discipline you for raising these concerns, you may be able to bring a claim against them in the Employment Tribunal. We always recommend you seek legal advice at the earliest opportunity when raising concerns in the workplace.

I am on maternity leave but want to be furloughed as this is better pay. Can I request this?

Yes it is possible for this to happen. You would however need to give your employer 8 weeks'

The Trustees are seeking a suitably qualified and experienced male carer, who will have the skills and enthusiasm to support our older people’s care needs and work alongside a small team of committed care staff. In particular, you will be required to advise and assist with all appropriate personal care needs of Service Users as identified in their Care Plans and Moving and Handling Risk Assessments. These needs may include bathing male Service Users at Day Centre, washing, laundry, continence needs, assist with mobility and feeding, engage with Service Users in activities and home visits.

The Applicant for this post will have experience of working in a Care setting or similar for 2 years; minimum of Level 2 in Heath and Social Care; hold a clean driving licence; have the ability to work well within a small team; have excellent communication skills, computer skills, numeracy and literacy skills; be both confident and competent within a care setting; and friendly and approachable to Service Users and their family members.

When we reopened last summer, after what everyone thought was the end of a one-off enforced hibernation, rumours where everywhere about outdoor dining being the only way forward and even the only dining permissible. For this reason, we, at The Grove, invested in a pizza oven and started serving pizza on the lawns, within two weeks, we had to buy a second pizza oven to keep up with demand. The food was great, the wine was flowing and the company was… well that depended on who you chose to bring…

But, even in the driest part of the country, it does rain and it can get chilly in the evenings, so we looked into ways of creating shelter.

After further investigation and thanks to the help of the business resilience and recovery grant from Norfolk and Suffolk LEP, the idea of Sundown came about; a seasonal restaurant in giant tipis with a menu based around pizzas, Norfolk tapas and ice-cream. Meaning people can sit and watch the sun slip away while raising a glass and wishing good riddance to the past 12 months.

Keeping your pet away from danger

March marks Toll Barn Vets Pet Poison Prevention Month so it’s a great time to raise awareness of some commonly encountered household poisons.

In the Larder! Chocolate contains Theobromine which can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, increased breathing rate, restlessness, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, inco-ordination and seizures. Signs usually occur 4-24 hours after ingestion. The darker the chocolate the higher the theobromine concentration. Grapes, raisins, sultanas and currents are all potentially able to cause kidney failure in dogs and cats. Signs include vomiting, diarrhoea, inappetence, salivation, weakness, lethargy and blood in the urine. Onions and garlic contain organosulphoxides which causes anaemia (low red blood cells) and other problems with blood cells. Japanese dog breeds and cats are even more susceptible to poisoning. Symptoms include pale gums, lethargy, increased breathing and heart rate, vomiting and inappetence. Xylitol is an extremely harmful artificial sweetener found in sugar free chewing gum and sweets. Ingestion causes

a rapid and life threatening drop in blood glucose (sugar) level and liver damage. Signs include weakness, lethargy, collapse, vomiting, tremors and seizures, jaundice (yellowing of the gums and eyes), black faeces and coma.

In the Garage! Antifreeze is very poisonous and attractive due to its sweet taste. Found in screen wash and brake fluid, just one teaspoon can kill a cat and cause kidney failure in a dog.

12 to 24 hours after ingestion the pet can start to look better, but this is usually followed by more extreme symptoms. Signs include drunk-like behaviour, incoordination, increased drinking and urination, drooling, vomiting, panting, sedation, coma and kidney failure.

Rat poison is highly toxic, stops blood clotting and can be fatal. Pets can be successfully treated if treatment is started early. Usually,

we will make the pet vomit to remove any remaining poison from the stomach and then start medication to help clotting function.

Symptoms include pale gums, weakness and tiredness, inappetence, collapse, coughing and breathing difficulties, blood in the faeces, urine or vomit.

Slug pellets contain metaldehyde which damages the nervous system causing muscle tremors, anxiety, drooling, panting, vomiting, seizures, increased body temperature and uncontrolled bleeding.

Mycotoxins are found in mould including food waste and compost heaps and are highly poisonous.

Signs include muscle tremors, seizures, panting, hyperactivity, vomiting, weakness, and uncoordinated movements.

Time is critical with poison cases so if you have concerns about your pet please contact your vet as soon as possible. Our friendly team are on hand 24/7 to advise our clients on 01692 407126.

NGR offer hope to these poor hounds and work hard to find them caring homes.

And this is where you could come in. Are you able to offer a foster home or forever home to one (or more) of these lovely dogs? Somewhere safe and warm with lots of love, regular food and a kind hand.

Despite their reputation as canine athletes, these dogs don’t need much exercise and make wonderful calm and gentle pets. As a foster carer you would receive all expenses for caring for a dog, covering vet’s fees, food and equipment. This arrangement may suit someone who cannot afford the cost of owning a dog or someone who cannot commit to long term ownership but has a suitable home and a willingness to help out until a forever home is found.

Like many charities, Norfolk Greyhound Rescue (NGR) have been under pressure during the pandemic. Unable to hold fundraising events has inevitably resulted in a severe reduction in income, but the number of hounds needing help does not stop. NGR is a non-profit organization who aim to rehome Irish greyhounds, ex-racers and those who never made the cut for racing, and now face an uncertain future or sometimes, tragically, an untimely end.

New walkabout drama brings “doof doof” soap action to two Norfolk seafronts

A ground-breaking new drama set in a Norfolk seaside town aims to bring gritty TV soap opera action to a walkabout audience.

And the up-and-coming young writer penning the script is perfect for the task, as he is one of EastEnders’ apprentice story makers.

James McDermott has created Ghosted as a Covid-busting production which will see the action unfold on the promenades at Great Yarmouth and Sheringham - while the audience wears headsets to get audio snippets that add to the twists and turns of the plot.

The story explores the efforts of five very different teenage friends, after their pal Ash disappears and his clothes are washed up on the beach. It delves into their characters, romances, and secrets which could explain Ash’s absence.

The cast will be chosen this month (February) and Ghosted will be staged in April by St George’s Theatre in Great Yarmouth and Sheringham Little Theatre in a joint venture partly funded by the government’s cultural recovery fund, which is helping the venues not only survive, but seek to expand its programming and diversity.

James, 27 who lives near Holt, said: “I love soap opera and Netflix box sets, which everyone has been binge watching in lockdown, and so wanted to write a play with all plot twists, grittiness and fast paced action of a binge-worthy TV drama”.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

When ten-year-old cats, Penfold and Percy, came into care, their previous owners advised us that, although brothers, they did not really get on. Although initially in one pen it was obvious that they would prefer to have their own space so as soon as the adjacent pen became free Percy was moved into it. They do still have contact but on their own terms and are much happier now. These two friendly boys have had health issues but will soon be available for adoption.

Another instance illustrating that not all cats enjoy sharing their space is dear little Patches. Her owners wisely contacted us because Patches was stressed living in a 6-cat household and had developed cystitis. Poor little girl, she was so stressed that, not only was she using her litter tray for toileting, but also her beds. She was constantly doing little wees.

After a course of antibiotics, having her own space. and plenty of tlc this delightful little cat no longer has a problem and has already been reserved, ready to leave for her new home where she will be the only cat.

A recent phone call from a member of the public seeking advice, highlights one of the reasons not to obtain a cat or kitten via the internet.

The lady concerned was ringing for advice as she had recently purchased a kitten at considerable expense from one of these websites. The advertisement indicated that the kitten was part pedigree (actually, no, it is either a pedigree with pedigree papers or it is a moggy). On arriving at the house to collect the kitten, the seller took her basket and came back with the kitten inside. The lady did not see the mother cat, any other kittens or where the cats were housed. On arriving home, she opened the basket but the kitten would not come out and she did not know what to do as the kitten would not let anyone near it. This kitten has obviously not been socialised at all and will need lots of care to achieve this. Unfortunately, she has not been able to make contact with the seller and could not remember exactly where she went to obtain this

kitten and the details have disappeared from the website. If you do feel comfortable obtaining a cat or kitten from one of these sites, always go to collect them, see how they are kept and make sure they are healthy and friendly.

Last year you may recall that we Patches mentioned that Pauline, one of our long-term fosterers, had given up her two pens as she had health problems and could no longer look after the cats. I am now very sorry to have to advise that Pauline sadly died recently having had a relapse.She will be remembered by all those that had cats from her as a very gentle and kind lady who cared very much for her charges and her own much-loved cats.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

Everyone expects tigers – and at Tadoba there they were! Being wildlife photographers, there were also lots of photographs of birds – and a few of the human residents as well! And a few landscapes.

Some are born in India and return to see relatives. Others are travellers who go to see the Taj Mahal and other sights. More go there for work or service. A few go to India to take photographs – as did Liz Wallis and Paul Richards who left their North Norfolk home to spend a somewhat hot spell in the subcontinent.

Liz and Paul (who are members of the Society) showed some of their pictures to North Norfolk Photographic Society via Zoom on February 3rd.

The first image shown was not a photograph at all, but a map of India showing the places visited, which started at Delhi and went on to places such as Tadoba, Bharatpur and the Keoladeo National Park.

The presentation with images spread over two approximate one-hour sessions and all compliments to Liz and Paul for producing so much first-class work and incorporating it into a top class talk.

Census 2021, North Norfolk Needs You! The Office for National Statistics – which runs Census 2021 – is working with North Norfolk District Council to deliver a successful census and help local services to fully meet future needs.

"Information provided through the Census will allow for a deeper understanding of the communities and life experiences of people across North Norfolk in terms of health, education, employment, income, housing tenure and transport and inform policy development and funding for public services in years to come - so please complete the form and make sure North Norfolk’s voice is heard in this national census.”

Paul Walmsley, Census Engagement Manager, added: “the level of advice and support given to me from both the Council and local community groups has been exceptional, I and the ONS team are determined to achieve the best possible Census for all in North Norfolk”.

Households will begin receiving letters with online codes in March explaining how they can complete their online

Census 2021 will include questions about your sex, age, work, health, education, household size and ethnicity. And, for the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Results will be available in 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations.

Broccoli and Stilton Soup

When the weather is cold and you need something substantial and comforting this soup really hits the spot.

Easy to make, tasty and ideal for freezing it is certainly a favorite in our house. It can be served smooth or chunky and improves on keeping in the fridge for a day or two (if it is around that long!)

Adjust the thickness of the soup by adding more or less potato.

This will easily serve 4 people.

Ingredients 1 large onion 4-6 floury potatoes 1-2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 litre vegetable stock 1 large head of broccoli cut into florets 6oz/180g mature stilton cheese

Method Take a large, heavy bottom saucepan and add the oil and set on a medium heat.

Chop the onion and potatoes into 2cm chunks and add to the saucepan, cook until they start to soften but not change colour.

Add the stock and broccoli florets, bring to the boil then turn down the heat and simmer until everything is cooked and the potato is soft (about 20-25 minutes).

Take off the heat and carefully mash with a potato masher until the soup is the desired consistency. Alternatively, the soup can be liquidized until smooth and returned to the saucepan.

Cut the stilton into 1cm chunks and add to the soup and stir until melted.

Sheringham Shoal grant supports home learning in North Norfolk

The Sheringham Shoal Community Fund has made a grant of £25,000 to the Every Child Online initiative which aims to ensure that every young person in Norfolk has access to the digital technology to allow them to learn from home during this period of pandemic lockdown.

The initiative was established by Norfolk County Council and the Norfolk Community Foundation earlier this year when it became apparent that Norfolk's schools and academies would need to supply around 6,000 devices to ensure that all young people in the county had access to the equipment and technology to facilitate successful home learning.

Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm is operated by Equinor and can power over 200,000 homes with renewable energy.

"The Sheringham Shoal Community Fund was established to support projects that would benefit the wider North Norfolk community, and education has always been one of its key criteria," said Karl Butler, the Power Plant Manager of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm. "With two young children of my own, I understand the challenges and difficulties which families have endured this last twelve months across the UK. I am therefore delighted that we are able to support the Every Child Online campaign, helping improve access for children to education."

In addition, from May 2020 the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund provided grant funding to the COVID-19 community response fund to support local charities working in North Norfolk to keep vulnerable people safe, The Sheringham Shoal Community Fund totals £100,000 per annum, and by the end of 2020 it had donated some £880,000 to over ninety individual projects in North Norfolk since its establishment in 2010.

The wind farm is owned by Equinor, Green Investment Group and Equitix through joint venture company Scira Offshore Energy Limited.

Plant Power!

I am the absolute last person to want to restrict my diet to a faddy one just because I've seen something on the telly or in the papers, but in this season when our health is foremost in our minds and supporting your body through food has been thrown into stark relief, making good food choices has taken centre stage for me. Having contracted Covid in early November and struggled with Long Covid ever since with a variety of alarming symptoms including high blood pressure (something I have never suffered with) I became determined to try everything I could through nutrition to improve my health. Since mid-January, I have been completely plant based in my diet, not an easy task but an interesting journey of discovery, and one which in just 6 weeks, has seen my blood pressure return to completely normal, and enabled me to come off all other medication I was on. I’m not out of the woods yet on the pain front, but things are steadily, and measurably, returning to normal, which is massively encouraging, and something which I would encourage others to try.

With this in mind, I’m going to share some of the tips and tricks I have picked up over this time, so that you don’t have to learn the hard way as I have!

Today’s recipe is an absolute cracker, and so versatile. Pesto usually has Parmesan in it, but really does not need it (I know, I was sceptical too, but trust me, this tastes amazing). One of the huge benefits of being plant based are all the wonderful extra nutrients you get from all those beautiful plants, all supporting the health of your body.

Opt for whole foods, not packaged factory based ‘vegan fare’ from the supermarket; think wholegrains, nuts, seeds, olive and coconut oils, herbs and spices, vegetables and fruit as your basic foods, and add in a few ‘treats’ in the form of ‘vegan’ cheeses, organic Tofu and Tempeh (use Tofoo brand, it’s the best) and 70% Cocoa chocolate and yummy dried fruits when you need a sweet hit.

Preparation is key if you want to make life easy and are busy; batch cook beans or pulses and pasta or grains at the start of the week to throw in recipes quickly, have home-made veg soup for speedy lunches, make pesto, keep crunchy veg in the fridge to snack on, make hummus, roast a big batch of veg (peppers, red onions, sweet potatoes, butternut squash) to chuck in later. All will keep well in the fridge for up to a week. Even if you eat this way for the majority of the time, but occasionally have to tuck into your favourite meat foods, you will reap benefits. We can’t take control of a lot at the moment, but our food choices are ours to make, and for me, healthy choices have led to a much heathier and happier body.

PLANT BASED PESTO & MUSHROOM TART For the Pesto (makes 1 batch): Bag of spinach Handful of fresh basil leaves Flat tsp dried oregano Half flat tsp garlic salt (or use 1 garlic clove) 3oz walnuts 3 oz sunflower seeds Juice of 1 fat lemon 3 fl ozs extra virgin olive oil Blend everything together except the olive oil in a blender, then add in the oil slowly to the desired consistency (should be nice and thick). Keep in an airtight container in the fridge.

1 large flat mushroom and a good handful of chestnut mushrooms, all sliced 1 tsp smoked paprika A tsp liquid smoke (optional, available in good health food stores or online) Pinch garlic salt Few drops of balsamic vinegar Pinch sugar Fry the mushrooms gently in a non-stick pan until they release their juices, then add in the rest of the ingredients and simmer gently until the juice reduces away, stirring occasionally. (scale up the ingredients to make a larger batch)

To make up the Tart 1 pack of Jus Rol Gluten Free Vegan ready rolled Puff Pastry A handful of black olives A little vegan grated cheese if desired (I use Applewood Vegan as it melts well) If you’ve prepped pesto and mushrooms ahead of time, this literally takes minutes to make. Take the pastry out of the fridge about 10 minutes before you need it to come up to room temp, unroll and leave on the greaseproof paper that it's rolled up in. Place on an oven proof tray and score about an inch in all around the outside, taking care not to cut all the way through. Spread a decent quantity of pesto on the tart, avoiding the outside inch that you have scored. Spread the mushrooms around evenly and dot the olives on the tart. Grate on a little cheese and place in a preheated oven on 200° for approx 15 mins or until the outside has puffed up and is starting to colour, and the middle of the tart is bubbling. Serve immediately with a huge seasonal salad.

Use the pesto for pizzas or pasta, add to soups or stews or stir into hot new potatoes.

Taboo?

It is oft said that the Victorians were obsessed with death, but would not talk about sex, and that, in contrast, the western world of the 21st Century is obsessed with sex but will not talk about death.

The pandemic is changing that, somewhat.

The euphemisms of death are often hilarious.

When I first started out as a private client lawyer, people would talk about ‘losing your mother’ which made me think of the ‘departed’ (there we go again!) rather like a toddler who had wandered off. In his book of the same name, Evelyn Waugh in the 1940s made fun of the term ‘The Loved One’, which has now entered mainstream language, even to the extent of being uttered without a hint of irony by Boris Johnson. In our modern fluid and blended society, the term is useful, rather like actors who call everyone ‘darling’ because they can’t remember names.

In 2011 the first ‘Death Café’ was held in the UK to provide an opportunity for people to ‘gather to eat cake, drink tea and talk about death’ in a positive way and now there are 10,000 such ‘cafés’ around the world, including online. A bit of a niche for most, probably.

Making the right plans now to manage ‘the inevitable’ gives peace of mind and setting out your wishes makes it easier ‘for those ‘left behind’ ‘when the time comes’.

Unsurprisingly, in 2020-1 there has been a big increase in Will-making. Ancient Romans considered the success of their life to be measured by the respect and love with which they were remembered posthumously and put much

effort into preparation. It was an anathema for them to die without a Will, for that very reason.

Why therefore do some people take the line that ‘They can fight over it all when I’m gone, because I won’t be here to see it!’?

Making a Will is the best way to think about the legacy (in the widest sense) that you will leave and how your worldly wealth will be settled – well or badly, it’s your choice.

Making a Will with a good and specialist solicitor is eternally fundamental, but especially where there is an inheritance dispute waiting in the wings.

Digital assets can easily be overlooked. Keeping paper records is considered safer, generally, than electronic data; so, hand a sheet with the information including passwords, to your solicitor to be stored with your Will. Regular updating is important.

Please choose the right executors: they should be people you trust and whom you can rely upon to do the job, and to do it well. They should get on, but need not be close. Best ask them too, so it doesn’t come as a surprise from which they recoil, leaving no one to do the job.

Think about whether you want cremation or burial. The former requires two doctors to certify your death as there are no remains to be dug up later (maybe, I have watched too much ‘Silent Witness’ and other police dramas?). Organ donation rules have changed and there is now an opt-out (rather than an opt-in) system. Transplant surgeons want healthy young organs, so those of octogenarians are generally surplus to requirement.

And remember, in the meantime, enjoy your time on earth!
