Northrepps 'Poppyland' Branch of The Royal British Legion

We have had more sadness within our Branch - the loss of our long-standing member David Brocklehurst, who would love to share a joke, had a lovely smile, and enjoyed all our Branch events and activities, together with his wife Ann. Also, we have sadly lost one of our Branch Poppy Collectors for many, many years, Margaret Whitbread, she was so lovely and cheerful, and also loved coming along to our Branch events with her husband Roger and family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with both families at this very sad time.

Now that we are taking steps to come out of lockdown, it has been decided that after taking into consideration many of our members feelings, that we are hoping to commence with our Branch Meetings on Monday 6th September 2021, 7.p.m., at our Meeting venue, The White Horse, Overstrand. There have been many enquiries regarding the remainder of this year’s events, but it has been decided that these will all be re-scheduled next year when we hope Covid-19 has faded into the background!! Thanking all our supporters for their continued support.

Pleasaunce Work Party Morning Saturdays, April 17th & May 1st

At last, the moment we have all been waiting for has arrived. We can cautiously come out of hiding and begin to meet up with one another, albeit at a safe distance. Eating out is allowed, weather permitting!

Again, the Pleasaunce is reopening - and the staff would like help weeding the lovely 5-acre garden to make it really pleasurable for their visitors. (Bring some basic garden tools for working outside) Come for the whole morning or even an hour.

We start to look forward to things getting easier and enjoying more fresh air and, dare I say, fun.

Norfolk Hall owners open walled gardens and host artisan craft fair in aid of charity

known Norfolk farming family acquired it during WW11. She remembers standing on the bridge which overlooks the lake and it was surrounded by Land Army girls and American Air Force men who were based nearby.

The owners of a secluded 18th century Norfolk Hall are to host an open garden and bijou craft fair in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association on the 29 and 30 May 2021. Over 21 local artisans will be showing their hand made wares.

Mother and daughter, Pauline Harrold and #Lara Lacey who live at Thurning Hall, Thurning between Reepham and Holt have hosted weddings at the Hall for over 26 years as an approved licensed civil ceremony venue.

However, it is only the second time they have opened the garden to the public.

Pauline who is 85, established the gardens when she moved to the hall in the 1960s.

She still loves working in them, planting and designing helped by Lara, her husband George and their three young children. There are over 150 spiced of roses with largely cottage style planting.

Cromer Minor Injuries Unit reopens

Cromer Minor Injuries Unit reopened on Monday 29 March as part of the restoration of services at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

It comes after the Cromer team, including ten Emergency Nurse Practitioners, were redeployed to support the Emergency Department at NNUH during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic in January.

Alice Richardson, Emergency Department Matron, praised the MIU team for their support and flexibility during the most challenging period of the pandemic.

“It has been amazing to have the Cromer MIU team with us to cover all our Emergency Nurse

Practitioner service and we have not had to supply a doctor to the minor injuries area at NNUH. They have also been helping with triage and initial assessment. They have been working in their scope of practice working in a different environment and have adapted really well. They are all really excited to be getting back to Cromer and reopening the MIU,” she said.

Cromer MIU, in Mill Road, Cromer will be open seven days a week and its usual hours of 8am to 7.45pm from Monday 29 March. If you are unsure about whether Cromer MIU is the appropriate place for your healthcare needs, please call 01603 646230.

Thanks to NNUH Specialist Children’s Diabetes Nurses and the Cromer outpatient team, families living in and around Cromer will no longer have to travel to Norwich for one of their routine condition check appointments.

As well as an annual check-up, children with diabetes have to have their overall glucose levels checked every three months. Until recently this involved up to a 50-mile round trip for some families from the coastal town, and surrounding area, to NNUH for the test, which takes only a few minutes.

The face-to-face test has always been carried out by NNUH health care assistants (HCAs) in a routine clinic appointment but because of the Covid-19 pandemic that in-person contact was reduced. A drive through service was created at NNUH so that children could extend their arm out of their car window, have the finger-prick test and wait for confirmation of a result.

Cromer Hospital Diabetes Team

Senior Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse, Suzanne Lee, wanted to set up a local service out of Cromer Hospital, so has developed a similar service there too. Training was arranged by the NNUH diabetes nurses to enable the clinic to be run by the outpatient nurses in Cromer.

Suzanne said: “We wanted to create a local service similar to that which we were running at the N&N. We did the training four months

Since then, the team has run three clinics.

Suzanne said: “I am really pleased with how teams from both hospitals have worked so well together to set up this service. This really is so much better for our patients in North Norfolk.”

Mum of two, Heidi Skillen, from Cromer, has benefited from the clinics now working out of her local hospital. Before and during the pandemic she would have to take her daughter Ava, 12, out of Cromer Academy, for the majority of the day to take her to NNUH for her check-ups – a situation Ava found stressful.

Heidi also has a nine-year-old son, Harry, who needed to make the journey as well as he could not be left with anyone during lockdown.

Heidi said: “This has been great for me. I am a single parent, and it is so much easier to go to Cromer Hospital. I don’t have that hour round trip; parking issues and I can take Harry with me. He can sit in the car with a phone, so he can call me if there are any problems.”

Work starts on NNUH Ambulatory Procedures Unit

Work has started on a £2.9m walk-in day procedure unit at NNUH as part of the trust’s building improvement programme.

The project will see cutting edge equipment housed in three neutral pressure treatment rooms, as well as associated support areas to enhance services for ambulatory patients attending for procedures. NNUH Chief of Surgery, Dr Tim Leary said: “The new unit will bring significant improvements for our patients. A dedicated team will be able to carry out more procedures for patients who need surgical procedures under local anaesthetic.

Other building projects currently underway include construction of the £6.5m Jenny Lind Hospital paediatric theatres to provide a purpose-built theatre complex for our younger patients up to the age of 16 and a £750k extension to the emergency department to install changing rooms, showers and toilets for staff, which is due to be complete this summer.

“Innovative regional anaesthetic and surgical technique will expand the range of procedures that can now be completed safely and comfortably without the requirement for general anaesthesia. Many of these procedures are currently carried out in the main theatre complex, so their completion in a dedicated ambulatory unit will release capacity to treat additional patients requiring more complex procedures.”

There should be minimum disruption for patients visiting the trust for treatment as clinical services will continue during the work. This project will reduce ongoing operation costs, through best use of existing space alongside a one-off capital investment of £2.9m. This is also another example of a building project which the NNUH Board has chosen to fast track. It is due to be completed by mid-summer with the first patients due in before the autumn.

Neonicotinoid – Update!

Further to my article published in several North Norfolk periodicals last month which outlined the Government’s removal of the ban on neonicotinoids, I can now offer the following update.

The UK Government banned bee-killing pesticides called neonicotinoids in 2018. At that time they resisted industry pressure to make any exceptions to the ban. This changed earlier this year when the Government allowed sugar beet producers in England to once again use seeds treated with the highly toxic neonic thiamethoxam on an emergency basis.

There is a stack of scientific evidence, including from the Government’s own scientific advisors, that this class of pesticide

are extremely hazardous to bees and other pollinators. Since this scientific advice was given to Government, it has emerged that they are also damaging to animals living in our water courses into which they leach.

Insects play a vital role in the food chain – it is estimated that around 30% of the food we eat relies on pollination - mainly by bees.

I wrote last month to declare by disappointment that these damaging chemicals can once again be used in England even though it was under emergency circumstances.

I am delighted and relieved to report that after the cold snap we all experienced in February, that the use of these nasty chemicals will not be needed this year. The cold weather has meant that the risk to sugar beet has diminished to a level below which the Government will

not now authorise neonicotinoid use under its ‘emergency derogation’ to sugar beet farmers in 2021.

It is important to note however, that this is only a stay of execution. It does not change the underlying issue - that neonicotinoid use could be allowed in the future.

Whilst it is important to support the farming community and to protect sugar beet production – it is crucial that longer-term, more sustainable solutions are found that don’t rely upon dangerous chemicals which are proven to harm our native bees and pollinators. I shall be watching closely for the Government’s next move on this issue.

Re opening plan for 2021

The North Norfolk Railway, based at Sheringham, is pleased to announce that under the current Government rulings it will reopen on 12th April 2021. There will be changes to its normal operation which will be as follows.

The period between Monday 12th April and Sunday 16th May will see a one train service operating between Sheringham and Holt four times daily. This train will consist of coaches with individual compartments ensuring that families/groups can travel in safety without having to mix with others. A compartment will be priced at £40 for 4 people if government restrictions allow an additional 2 persons can be added at £10 pp. Booking for these trains is already available on the website at www.nnrailway.co.uk

From 17th May to 23rd July, it is planned to operate a two-train service consisting of three Steam rotations and three Diesel Multiple Unit services.

During both periods trains will operate between Sheringham and Holt they will not stop at Weybourne or Kelling Heath during this period.

With the restrictions still in place pre-booking will be required; walk-ups will only be accepted if space is available and it is safe and legal to accept them. It is hoped that from 24th July a normal Red service operation of two Steam trains will be able to be put into operation.

The North Norfolk Railway is planning to host a small number of special events during the year which are planned to include: A Mixed Traction weekend 24/25th July.

A full Steam Gala 3rd-5th September featuring the return of the N2 locomotive, the last gala appearance of the B12 before its major overhaul supported by the rest of the based Steam locomotives. There will be a scaled-down 1940s event over its usual weekend 17th-19th September followed on 30th October with and evening Ghost train.

The Norfolk Lights Express is planned to return from 15th November though to 2nd January (with a break over the Christmas period) and Santa from 27th November until 24th December. Finally Mince Pie trains will operate from 27th December to 2nd January.

Discussions are ongoing regarding a visit from Thomas and a return of the Dads Army event.

As I sit writing this the hail has ceased and the April sun is shining brightly; we've just been shovelling thirty tonnes of new gravel around our front drive to get ready for reopening.

North Norfolk District Council recognises that many businesses will be busy making arrangements and adjustments to their businesses ahead of projected re-opening dates; many businesses may be feeling uneasy or unsure how to safely re-open their doors and welcome customers back into the premises.

Although this last year has been tremendously tough for the hospitality industry, us Cromer folk are resilient and - hopefully - the town has weathered yet another storm and is standing by to receive all the lovely visitors we see each year.

To alleviate some of the stress of working out how to re-open safely, the Council’s Public Protection team have put together some checklists and information on best practice for making sure your workplace is as safe and COVID-19 compliant as possible.

We have a new project that will be opening in May. Sundown is our second restaurant at the Grove; two giant tipis put together to provide seating for up to 100, all enjoying hand made, stone-based pizzas, seafood platters and Norfolk tapas.

It's really exciting and we look forward to welcoming you all in a few weeks' time.

This includes guidance on completing a COVID-19 Risk Assessment, a Foods Standard Agency re-opening checklist and a list of COVID-19 priority actions for shops and retail businesses.

The business pack contains specialised information for outbreak control, itemised and relevant to each sector operating in the District.

Dealing with estate debts

by Anna French, Chartered Legal Executive, Hayes + Storr If you are an executor of an estate, your duties involve not only dealing with the assets of the deceased, but also any debts that have been left behind. Any estate may have debts, even if the deceased was wealthy – it is reported that Michael Jackson died with around $500 million worth of debt.

It is the duty of the executors to make sure debts are repaid.

Impact of debts on beneficiaries Naturally, if an estate includes debts, this will reduce the amount that is available for distribution to the beneficiaries.

If the estate is solvent, there will be sufficient funds to pay all debts, but the amount the beneficiaries receive will be reduced. If the estate is insolvent and the debts outweigh the assets, then the beneficiaries will not receive anything.

As an executor you should keep the beneficiaries informed and manage their expectations about what they will inherit.

For a solvent estate Once estate debts have been paid, you will need to think about the beneficiaries. A legal procedure called abatement applies

wherever assets are insufficient to pay all the legacies in full. If this is the case, the residuary beneficiaries will not receive anything, as the payment of legacies takes priority over the residue of the estate.

We understand it can be really difficult to monitor our pets weight and resist those appealing eyes asking for treats however, research from the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA) suggests 92% of owners were unaware that their pet was an unhealthy weight. This is important because as little as 20% extra weight can significantly increase the risk of diabetes, osteoarthritis, heart disease, respiratory disease and certain cancers.

We understand how time consuming and difficult it can be to help your pet achieve their target weight and even to work out if your pet needs to work on their waistline. Our friendly team of veterinary nurses are offering free of charge nutrition clinics for our patients which include body condition scoring, advice on diets and feeding as well as general health and exercise advice depending on your pets condition. Pets, much like humans, come in many different shapes and sizes and relying on numbers can be dangerous. When assessing a pets weight it is not just the number on the scales which is important. It is equally as important to use a body condition score technique rather than just relying on the numbers. It is far better to use a body condition score which assesses characteristics such as ease of feeling the ribs and waistline to determine your pets ideal weight.

Secret Centre Lemon Cupcakes

Now that we are allowed to meet up with friends in the garden and we have hopefully honed our baking skills over lockdown, here is a lovely recipe to go along with that cup of tea and a natter. Whenever I make these, people are very impressed with them and yet they are so easy and quick to make. Even if your piping skills are a little hit and miss, as Delia says, if good ingredients go into a cake it can’t help but taste delicious.

Ingredients 6oz/170g self-raising flour 6oz/170g caster sugar 6oz/170g softened butter 1.5 tsp baking powder

3 large free-range eggs Grated zest 2 large lemons 1.5 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 jar of good lemon curd

For the buttercream 8oz/225g icing sugar 3.5 oz/100g softened butter 2 tsp lemon juice Lemon jelly decorations or yellow sprinkles to decorate if desired

Method Preheat the oven to 170C/325F/Gas 3.

Line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases.

Sift the flour and caster sugar into a large bowl, add the butter, baking powder, eggs, lemon zest and lemon juice and beat together with a hand mixer or food processor until light and fluffy.

Fill each paper case to about ¾ full with the

mixture and place in the oven for 20 minutes or until springy to touch and golden brown.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool.

Meanwhile make the buttercream. Beat together the icing sugar, lemon juice and butter until light and fluffy, you can adjust the texture with a little extra icing sugar if too wet or an extra teaspoon of lemon juice if too stiff.

When the cakes are cold, take a core of sponge out of the middle of each one with a sharp knife and put to one side. Take care not to cut all the way through to the bottom. Fill each hole with a teaspoon of lemon curd (or pipe in the curd) and place the plugs of sponge back onto the cakes. Pipe or dollop a swirl of buttercream onto each cake and decorate as you wish.

Norfolk & Norwich Festival confirms festival will take place 17-30 May 2021

Daniel Brine, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Norfolk & Norwich Festival has confirmed that the 2021 Festival will go ahead between 17 – 30 May this year. Following the government’s announcement on Monday 22 February, the Festival, which was due to start on 14 May, has pushed its start date back by just three days.

The 14-day event is set to be a specially created one-off adaptation including outdoor and socially distanced performance, art and music as well as a digital strand.

Daniel Brine said: “We are delighted to be able to say that the Festival is going ahead. We have been working for 12 months on a special Festival that could take place safely in COVID times and hope, subject to the scheduled easing of restrictions that we will be able to deliver on all our planning. We will be taking every responsible precaution, working with the local authorities and making the programme as safe and adaptable as we can. We will begin making performance announcements over the coming weeks and are sure there’s something within the programme that everyone will be able to enjoy.”

Mr Brine also revealed that the 2021 Festival organisers and partners will make the vast majority of the programme available on a free or ‘pay what you want’ basis.

“This is just one of several radical changes we’ve made in 2021. We’re aware that it has been a tremendously difficult year for everyone, in all sorts of ways. While it’s not a sustainable business model beyond this year, the approach allows as many people as possible the chance to access and enjoy the Festival and the collective experience and healing power that art and events of this nature bring. We’re able to do this in part due to the steadfast support of Arts Council England, Norwich City Council and Norfolk County Council. And we thank a number of wonderful sponsors and supporters who share our ambitions. We’re excited that we can begin our recovery from 17 May.”

The Festival will feature a programme of music, performance, visual arts and literature in venues and outdoor spaces across Norwich and Norfolk. All Festival events will be in line with government guidelines.

In today’s climate and also the current market, there are varieties that will suit both greenhouse, outdoors and also hanging baskets. You can grow them in open ground, grow bags, large containers or indeed hanging baskets. You can also grow them in running water which is called hydroponics which is quite technical.

It is not too late to grow your own tomatoes, by starting them off on a warm windowsill in a pot of fine compost and putting a polythene bag over them to keep it moist. The seeds will germinate within a few days.

Gradually take off the bag and keep them out of direct sun until they harden off a bit or they will scorch. You can buy already developed young plants ready to plant out in a greenhouse or conservatory soon.

When the tomato seedlings develop a further set of leaves, now is the time to pot them onto a 3” or 10cm pot of general-purpose compost. This plant can be grown on until you want to plant it out into its final location or indeed potted on to a bigger container, a pot the size of 18” would be well suited to growing it to a mature fruiting plant or indeed a grow bag would suit three plants.

As the plant grows it will put outside shoots from the leaf joint. If you want a single stem plant, these need to be nipped out. In between the leaves will develop what we call trusses of flowers, these will develop into the tomato fruits, once they start developing you will need to feed the plant. A good plant food that is diluted with water is called Tomorite, other makes are available.

This needs to be applied once or twice a week. As the plant grows it will need support and using canes or thick pieces of wood the plant can grow beyond 6 feet tall or two metres. Once you have about 6 trusses on the plant now is the time to nip the top out. This will help the fruit develop.

However, if you have a lot of room you could grow it as a bush. What you

Covid-19: Why having a Will in place is so important

On 5th March 2020 the first death from Covid-19 in the UK was confirmed. At that date just over 100 cases had been recorded and the Prime Minister thought the outbreak would cause the country "a substantial period of disruption."

One year later and in the past 12 months over 125,000 people in the UK have died from a disease that none of us had heard of at the start of 2020 and which has now killed over 2.6 million people globally.

Statistics show that approximately 60% of people in the UK don't have a Will: that's 75,000 of those people. Applying those statistics, 75,000 people who died in the last 12 months in the UK from Covid-19 died without a Will: 75,000 people!

75,000 people not only left families distraught and upset through their untimely deaths but who then compounded that grief by the family discovering that person had not made a Will, causing unnecessary stress and upset at a time they needed it least.

One of the most responsible and straightforward matters that we can do is to have a Will in place; an up-to-date document which is properly drafted by a Solicitor and can easily be located on death.

Losing a loved one is stressful and upsetting, particularly if this death was unexpected. If you die without a Will your family will need to get legal advice and dealing with matters is usually more costly and complex. A Will is the only legal way to specify what you want to happen to your child if you die before they are 18. A Will is especially important for parents with young children to appoint a legal guardian. A Will is the only way to leave assets to your partner and your partner's children if you are unmarried; unmarried partners or "common-law" spouses receive nothing if you die without a Will.

If you die without a Will the law decides who gets what according to certain rules. These are called the rules of intestacy, which can be can be arbitrary.

Throughout the ongoing restrictions of Covid-19 it has been possible to prepare a Will; we have met clients in car-parks, outside windows, in their own homes and remotely via Zoom, Teams, WhatsApp and Facetime.

The RNLI Shop in Sheringham High Street will open again on the 12th of April. Carolyn Price, the volunteer manager, is much looking forward to welcoming back her volunteer colleagues and the public. Thanks to the support of local people and visitors, last year the shop was top of all the RNLI shops in the UK. Local people help UK COVID-19 research pass one million participants

More than one million participants (1,075,000) have now taken part in COVID-19 research across the UK, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and NHS can proudly announce.

Local people across East Anglia have played an important role in reaching this remarkable milestone, with more than 32,000 participants taking part in nationally prioritised COVID-19 studies supported by the NIHR Clinical Research Network Eastern.

Since the onset of the pandemic, the NIHR has supported more than 180 studies into COVID-19 right across the country. Of these, more than 100 studies were also funded by the NIHR, amounting to more than £108 million given to dedicated COVID-19 research.

The milestone of one million participants has been achieved across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales by members of the public, NHS doctors and nurses, NIHR research staff and researchers, regulators, life science companies, research funders and policy makers.

Across the Eastern region, 16 NHS hospitals have supported and delivered this vital research by helping their patients to take part.

Surajit, who is one of the Norfolk residents who is taking part in a vaccine trial at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, said: “Everybody wants to try and do their bit, don’t they? Because I have type 2 diabetes and my background is Indian, I’m in a slightly higher risk category, so I couldn’t get too close to the frontline, but I really wanted to do something. Ultimately, we all benefit from research, so I’m glad I’ve taken part. Hopefully it will benefit mankind, and if the vaccine is approved for use it would be nice to know that I contributed.”

Among the other interesting subjects which “thecatgroup” offers advice about is Cats and the Law and the benefits of neutering kittens at four months old, something that Cats Protection is committed to.

The website Ollie, 6-7 years old recently arrived provides useful in care via the vets information for cat owners old and new and is one I regularly refer to.

Obviously, we are delighted when people choose to give one of our cats a new home but realise that we do not always have one that fits a person’s lifestyle. If we cannot help, other branch of Cats Protection or another charity (RSPCA for instance) may have something suitable.

We do, however, still want everyone to have a good experience when offering a home to a cat, be it pedigree or moggy and will therefore continue to advise people to be cautious when buying on-line.

Another instance of unscrupulous people offering a pet for sale on one of these websites came to our attention when Stephanie recently received another call. This time a very distressed caller advised her that they had bought a kitten on-line which had health problems from the first day in its new home. Unfortunately, after several visits to the vets the poor little kitten had to be euthanised. All the family had to show for their experience was a vet bill.

Looking at the websites it is obvious from the prices being asked that the sellers are more interested in making money from the cats than caring for them. If you have decided you would like to offer a home to a cat or kitten, a good place to find lots of advice is the thecatgroup.org.uk website. This has lots of very useful information (including a Kitten Check List) and has been produced by a collection of professional organisations dedicated to feline welfare, including all the major charities involved in cat rescue. The Kitten Check List would be especially useful for someone considering purchasing a pedigree kitten and hopefully, by reading this, they will avoid being “sold a pup”!

Many of the kittens sold on-line as pedigrees do not appear to have been registered with GCCF or one of the other bodies working to ensure that pedigree kittens meet the breed standards. Reputable breeders will also sell kittens at a lower price if they do not want them to be used for breeding, thus ensuring the characteristics of the breed are maintained and health problems avoided.

The club held a competition intended to be the second Prints competition, but adapted to a digital competition judged and viewed via the internet.

The specified topic was ‘People’ which caused some grumbling among the wild-life experts and the landscape specialists – but in the event there were 77 competing entries.
