Cromer Flower Club
Locomotive No. 20227 “Sherlock Holmes” Returns to North Norfolk Railway to Help Haul Special Dining Trains to Cromer
With over 42 years of Flowers, Friendship & Fun Cromer Flower Club had so many happy gatherings filled with wonderful flowers demonstrations, laughter and companionship.
Continued from front cover...
They were used extensively on freight trains seeing only occasional use on passenger work – sometimes for summertime specials to seaside resorts such as Skegness.
Unfortunately, after years of trying to fill key committee posts and a dwindling membership, the club has now taken the decision to closed.
The engine is now owned by the Class 20 Locomotive Society which has saved three of the heritage diesels and arrived at Sheringham by road after almost a year away from the North Norfolk undertaking mainline work and then visiting the Epping Ongar Railway for six months visit to assist with their trains. “Sherlock Holmes” is no stranger to special trains hauled a number of commemorative trains for London Underground in the mid-2000s and sports the eye-catching maroon livery carried by Metropolitan Railway locomotives.
Many thanks go to previous members who in their varying roles have helped with the running of the club.
Commercial Manager Graham Hukins said, “We are very pleased to have ‘Sherlock Holmes’ back on the line. The special trains to Cromer need a locomotive at each end as it’s not possible to move an engine from one end to the other at Cromer Station so 20227 will head the trains as they leave our tracks and head across Sheringham Level crossing and onto Network Rail’s Bittern Line while a steam engine will be at the back ready for the return journey.
The photos show some of our members decorating the Carnival Queen’s float for the fabulous Cromer Carnival – something which these ladies wish to continue.
“20227’s use won’t be limited to the Cromer trips though, she will also be in use at some of our special events this summer and will also work alongside the line’s steam fleet on a number of other days,” he added.
Full details of the line’s services, including the special dining trains can be found at www.nnrailway.co.uk.

Benefits of a bath!
A Note from the editor
What turbulent times we are living in, with war and economic hardship. Terrible scenes on TV of displaced women, children and elderly clutching what few possessions they can carry. Who would not want to do something to help? Organizations such as The Red Cross, Unicef, Save the Children and many more are coordinating donations to bring aid to the Ukrainians, but, as the saying goes, the other side of an emergency is an opportunity, but not always a good one. In the last 2 weeks I have had several spam emails appealing for money for Ukraine. These are not linked to any official organization and the email addresses are bogus.
There are many people who are considering removing their bath to replace it with a walk-in shower, as they are currently struggling not only to lift their legs over the side of a bath but once in the bath, to get up and out again. The benefits of a long soak to ease aching limbs and muscle pains as well as lifting mood are well documented and baths can help to make you feel more awake as well as an aid to a good sleep.
Taking a bath will help you breathe easier because the warmer water makes the heart beat faster, increasing the flow of oxygen around the body. Bathing is also good for cleaning and moisturizing hair, skin and eyes. The human body is made mostly of water which is why we are encouraged to drink plenty of it but soaking in it is also good for the body.
We all want to do what we can to bring some relief to those in need but please be careful your money is not going to the scammers. If you want to donate, please use the official websites or donate at any of the high street banks, all of which will make sure your money goes to the right place. If you receive an email that looks suspicious, don’t click on any links, instead send it to the junk folder and do a search for your chosen charity to donate via a genuine website. Enjoy your April magazine. Keep safe and well. Jo – Editor.
Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines:
Age Concern North Norfolk has a fully adapted Parker bath with a recline function to enable people to enjoy the benefits of being immersed fully in water. Perhaps you could also come and have lunch either before or after your bath!

WHY C HOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?
Publishing date Friday 13th May Friday 17th June Friday 15th July
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, fo or example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offe fers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and fa ar, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

Continue to follow safer behaviours to prevent the spread of COVID-19
Now that there are no longer legal restrictions in place to reduce the risk of transmitting Covid, health leaders are reminding everyone to continue practicing safer behaviours and continue coming forward to get vaccinated to help us live with Covid safely.
While legal restrictions have now lifted and life feels like it’s returning to normal, the risks that Covid presents to our health and society still remain. With over 370,000 people under the age of 35 experiencing the long-term effects of COVID-19 nationally, maintaining those safer behaviours that helped us to reduce the risk of transmission is still important.
You can help protect yourself and others by: • Coming forward to get vaccinated when you’re eligible, or taking that first, second or third step to keep your vaccinations topped up. Vaccines remain our best line of defence against Covid • Washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds every time you come indoors or before you eat • Carrying alcohol hand gels that you can use while out and about in public • Remembering to “Catch it, Bin it, Kill it” • Opening the windows and letting fresh air in when meeting people indoors. • Wearing a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces, like shops and public transport.
These safer behaviours that became so familiar during lockdown and as the pandemic restrictions began to ease are still best practice to follow to protect our health and the health of our friends and family, colleagues, and those that we care for.
Cath Byford, Chief Nurse at Norfolk and Waveney CCG said: “As it starts to feel like spring and all the restrictions, we’d grown used to have opened up more now, we know many of us may be tempted to put all of those restrictions behind us and try to get back to how things were before the pandemic hit.
“But I cannot stress enough how important it is to maintain the safer behaviours that we all adopted during the pandemic. These behaviours like washing your hands, ventilating rooms, and choosing to wear a face mask in public places will make a real difference in how easily viruses can circulate throughout our communities.
"And although the legal restrictions on isolating have eased, I would continue to encourage anyone who’s feeling unwell to try to stay at home and avoid contact with others. Don’t go into work and don’t go out in public places, and if you do have Covid symptoms, please take a test and avoid other people if you test positive and let others that you’ve come into recent contact with know that you’ve tested positive.
Cromer Baptist Church
Meeting at East Runton Methodist Chapel, NR27 9NZ
"If you’re not up to date with your Covid vaccinations, please remember it’s never too late to get your jab. Every vaccine really does count in helping us live with Covid like we do with the seasonal flu.”
In order to make getting the vaccination as quick and convenient as possible, Norfolk and Waveney CCG, along with health and care partners, has extended the Jab Cab service beyond March. This means anyone who needs to get to a vaccination site or walk-in clinic to get a first, second, or booster dose can now do so for free, with no deadlines.
In order to claim your free journey, book your COVID-19 jab online or check which walk-in centre you’d like to visit. This short video explains how quick and easy it is to book your free Jab Cab, watch it at: Get your vaccination with the Jab Cab.
Meanwhile, the latest group who have become eligible for vaccination are children aged 5-11 years old who are clinically at-risk of COVID-19 or living with someone who is immuno-suppressed. Children in this group will be invited for a vaccination by a local health provider, so if you have received a letter please be sure to book an appointment as soon as possible using the National Booking Service or find a local walk-in centre.

Cromer Parish Hall Fundraiser Days
My name is Kerri and I run Miss Kay’s Bookstore in Partnership with Usborne. I believe that reading and literacy skills are hugely important, and I am keen to promote a passion for lifelong learning and selfdevelopment in people of all ages.
The ability to read unlocks so many doors that empower people to lead successful and fulfilled lives. Through my business, I decided to start a mission to enable more children, young people and adults to access quality books that will spark interest, curiosity and excitement whilst also developing their individual skills.
This year, I am hosting a selection of Fundraising Days at Cromer Parish Hall to raise money for my CBP Mission. Each of these events will boast a range of stalls, tabletop sales, local businesses, refreshments, fundraising games and entertainment with all the profits going towards our great cause. With these profits, I aim to provide £200’s worth of books every month to each beneficiary we support. So far, it has raised well over £2,000’s worth of books that have been donated to community groups and charities all over our county making a huge difference to those who have received them. For more information on our previous beneficiaries, how to get involved as a stall holder, volunteer or entertainer or to find out how else you could support my CBP Mission, please go to my website www.miss-kay.co.uk or email me on info@miss-kay.co.uk

North Norfolk Children’s Author Signs Two Book Deal for Mystery Thrillers! Former Radio Norfolk, BBC Look East and ITV Anglia reporter, producer and newsreader Phil Johnson, has had his debut mystery thriller published on March 31st by London based, Burning Chair Publishing. Killer in the Crowd is a fast-moving, action-packed thriller set in the raw underbelly of the music scene. Local locations include the UEA LCR and a bus hijacking near Dereham!
It’s been described by singer songwriter Steve Harley of Cockney Rebel as: “Utterly compelling… (with) an ending that comes like a bolt from the blue. Mystery in the music world!” And, by Norfolk author and broadcaster Nick Crane as: “A real escapist page-turner with plenty of plot twists, oodles of drama and a compelling cast. Terrific.”
Killer in the Crowd begins when schoolteacher Cath Edgley, hears the shocking news that fading rock star Raven Rain has been murdered. To Cath, Raven Rain is more than just a picture on a magazine – he was also the ex-lover of her missing mother, Betzy Blac, lead singer of ’80s punk girl band, Décolleté. A woman who went missing over 30 years ago.
Warned by a string of mystery text messages to “trust no one”, Cath is inspired to solve the mystery of her mum’s disappearance, once and for all. Along the way, she finds herself in a new role, the unwitting replacement lead singer for her mum’s old band on their first tour in 30 years. Can Cath find the killers before she becomes their next victim? Are the superstars she encounters all that they seem? And what exactly happened to the punk superstar, Betzy Blac?
Phil has previously published The Little Blue Boat children’s series set on the Broads, which were nominated for the Norfolk Arts Awards and produced as a play.
Phil said: “I loved writing and telling the stories of The Little Blue Boat and Able Sea Bear Teddy, but I want to write fast moving action thrillers which offer escapism, entertainment and excitement. My stories are for rainy days and lonely nights, sunny beaches and poolside cafes. They’re for anyone who enjoys great locations and gripping tales, with protagonists you want to fall for, laugh with and cry for, knowing that however bad it looks, my heroes will win through in the end, and… there’s a Hollywood ending waiting to be revealed!
Phil’s second thriller: “Run to the Blue” is another high-octane thriller with the story of TV reporter Tess Anderson, running from killers and spies, helped by a mysterious American yachtsman on a roller-coaster ride around the Greek islands. It’s due to be published this summer.

Over 260 offences detected as part of operation targeting HGVs Police in Norfolk stopped 214 vehicles and detected more than 260 offences, after targeting drivers of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) as part of a week-long operation supported by National Highways.
dealt with through rectification notices. Four drivers were referred to the Traffic Commissioner.
Operation Tramline saw police provided with an HGV tractor unit by National Highways (formerly Highways England), which allowed officers to carry out patrols across the county’s strategic road network and focus on offences committed by lorry drivers.
Sergeant Jordan Pokorny, of the Joint Roads and Armed Policing Team, said: “The number of offences detected as part of this operation is really disappointing to see, but also shows how necessary these enforcement weeks are.
The initiative took place between Monday 28 February and Friday 4 March and involved officers from the Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Roads and Armed Policing Team, with enforcement taking place on the A47, A11 and A17.
“The fact that 38% of drivers were dealt with for fatal four offences, is truly startling considering we spend a large amount of our time educating people on the devastating consequences these can often have. We would like to thank National Highways for providing the HGV tractor as the elevated cab meant that we were able to spot these offences a lot easier, whatever vehicle was being driven.”
The HGV tractor unit - which was driven by a police officer - provides an ideal vantage point meaning officers can look directly into the cabs of other lorry drivers, whilst also dealing with any offending motorists driving vans or cars too. Supporting police officers are then on hand to pull-over any offenders.
“The laws are there to save lives and we will continue to conduct these operations and crackdown on dangerous drivers who are in control of some of the most dangerous vehicles on our roads.”
A total of 214 vehicles were stopped, including 69 HGVs, 80 LGVs and 65 smaller goods vehicles.
Inspector Simon Jones added: “This operation goes to show that you never know when you are being recorded Cromer Laundry Services for illegal activities behind the wheel. & Launderette I hope this has opened 10 Bond Street Cromer the eyes of those drivers who have not self service - service wash only put themselves, ironing - steaming - dry cleaning agents but other road users at repairs & alterations risk. This was a very commercial & domestic successful week of Open 8am to 6pm Monday - Saturday action, and I would 01263 479653 or 07985 809471 like to thank the team cromerlaundryservices@gmail.com for their hard work.”
263 offences were detected and the drivers in question were issued with Traffic Offence Reports (TORs), some having committed more than one offence.
These offences include: • 6 x Using a mobile phone • 4 x Not in proper control • 92 x Not wearing a seatbelt • 2 x Speeding • 4 x No insurance • 89 x Construction and use • 51 x Insecure loads • 1 x Drink/drug driving • 2 x Wanted in connection with crime • 2 x Others • 10 x Driving without due care and attention
Officers issued 215 TORs, arrested three people, and issued words of advice to 13 drivers. Three vehicles were seized, and eight drivers were

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Ginny and Gremlin have now left us for their new home. Paddington and Winnie, two young cats, are still available and Reggie, another young cat, has been re-homed. However, Reggie has not moved far as he is now living with Lesley and her family, which includes two other cats. Reggie does have some health issues but is enjoying life with the two other cats in Lesley’s household, both of whom were adopted from the branch. We also have someone interested in giving Ollie a home but, unfortunately, as Irene has Covid, it is not possible for them to visit and see him.
Stephanie has recently had several calls from people reporting “stray cats”, some of which have been injured and it is important for us to follow the correct procedures before considering taking a cat into care, provided of course, that we also have a pen available.
For any strays that are seen which are injured or sick they need to contact the RSPCA as this is an aspect of cat care which they cover. For other stray cats it is important to make sure that the cat is really a stray and not someone’s cat. The Theft Act 1968 states that in law, cats are the “property” of their owner and theft of a cat is regarded as an offence under the act in the same way as theft of property is. Therefore, if a cat has strayed or is lost, it is generally regarded as the property of the original owner and it is necessary to make all reasonable endeavours to locate the owner.
If the cat is approachable efforts should be made to catch and take it to the vets to see whether it is has been microchipped. The vets will usually then contact the owner to help reunite them. If not chipped the cat should be returned to where it was found and paper collars with a contact number put on the cat to ascertain whether or not it lives locally. It is also important to check with neighbours in case it lives locally. If the cat is timid, it may be necessary to borrow a trap to catch
Hedgehog Haven
the cat and then act as above. Efforts to find the original owner should continue for about two weeks.
We often receive calls from the vets we use with regard to strays and a recent cat coming into care is an instance of this. Arthur, was handed into Cromer Vets and after holding him for two weeks, to see if anyone contacted them to claim him, they called us to see if we could take him in. He is now happily settled in Reggie’s old pen at Lesley’s.
If you are interested in Joey receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen. Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home.

What if you were given a life-altering diagnosis at 57? One that meant you aren’t who you thought you were? But one that explained everything?
A new anthology of poetry from Sheringham author Clare Smith – Outside Looking In - vibrates with intensity and curiosity about life, and because she was diagnosed with autism so late in life, many of her poems focus not so much on what it means to be autistic, as on what it means to be human.
No less a person than Prof Tony Attwood, one of the world’s leading autism researchers, has endorsed the work, describes her poetry as “sensitive and engaging”.

Throughout her life, as she struggled to fit into a world that to her was utterly strange, she poured her hopes, her joys and at times her despair into words. Probate fees increase in England and Wales by up to 76%
From the 26th of January 2022, the Ministry of Justice has introduced a flat rate fee of £273 for probate applications. Previously, this was set at £155 if applied for by solicitors and £215 for those who applied directly.
This comes after extensive waiting times in processing applications during the pandemic. On average it took people 12 to 14 weeks to receive their grant in 2020 which of course adds huge inconvenience to those already dealing with the death of a loved one.
The government are looking to raise £20 million each year as the system currently operates at a loss. The changes in fees are to reflect work needed towards the service as they plan to implement a new centralised online system replacing paper applications. Their hope is that this will reduce any administrative errors and poor communication from the probate service that contributed to the backlog.
For those who are executors of estates valued at £5,000 or less, they will remain exempt from any fees on applying.
A spokesman from the Ministry of Justice has stated "These fees will fully fund our investment in a first-class digital probate service to ensure shorter waiting times, fewer user and administrative errors, and a better experience for families."
However, some are concerned that this may in fact have the opposite effect. As there are now the same fees whether or not you use a professional to help you with your application, the Law Society anticipates that this will lead to more people doing the applications without the help of a solicitor. The consequence of this is that this will have a higher chance of mistakes and errors from those that do not have expertise in dealing with this area.
With one of the largest wills, trusts and probate departments in Norfolk, we have a reputation
for providing the local community with an extensive range of private client services and we have a team of specialist private client lawyers who can help you through every stage of probate applications.

Pigmentation treatments from Coltishall Clinic
Your complexion blending and brightening options for flawless skin
A uniform skin tone and texture is desired by many irrespective of their colour and considered a sign of skin health. Hyperpigmentation on the other hand, a disorder with increased pigmentation can cause patients great distress, and often requires treatment in a multimodal manner using effective combination. Hyperpigmentation is a medical term used to describe darker patches of skin. These patches result from excess melanin production, which can be caused by a number of reasons including excessive sun exposure, hormone fluctuations, genetics, injuries, inflammation or disorders such as melasma.
and pigmented lesions however can be treated very successfully.
We can evaluate type, location and depth of pigmentation in the skin and this guides what treatments we may recommend. This may include sun protection, skin creams such as lightening creams/ serums, vitamins B, niacinamide, vitamin C and vitamin A products such as retinols. Treatment recommendations are tailored to your unique requirements.
Gentle skin peels and microdermabrasion may also be recommended. Next up are options such as micro needling which can be combined with use of mesotherapy. Here pigment-lightening agents are used in combination for enhanced penetration into skin for better effect. These may include hyaluronic acid, glutathione, vitamins, azelaic acid etc.
A careful evaluation and diagnosis of cause of pigmentation is important. Response to treatment can be variable and recurrence very common so some kind of maintenance such as long-term use of sunscreen and lightening agents is often recommended. Most benign pigmentation
We have a variety of high tech lasers that have been used successfully for pigmentation treatment. These lasers have added benefit for improving skin texture and tone and reducing scarring such as from acne and also reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. These can provide nice complexion blending and brightening.

Some general recommendations are to use good skin care, cleansers, exfoliate and moisturise. Using sun-protection with a broad spectrum SPF-30 or above. Avoid skin products that sting or burn as inflammation is not good. Avoid picking and scratching your skin. Of course good hydration diet and avoiding smoking is important too.
Coltishall Clinic is well equipped with multiple lasers and non-laser technology so we can device a customised treatment programme based on your unique characteristics. There are also many innovative gentle treatments such as mesotherapy on offer so why not come and see us and start your journey towards a flawless skin. DO YOU HAVE A SUPER CAT?
Over recent decades it is becoming more apparent that our cats are living longer. To encourage us, as owners, to consider what life stage our cats are in and what changes in our cats may be going through, some new terminologies have been introduced. Cats aged between 11-15 years old are called “senior cats”, while those cats over 15 are said to be “super senior” – perhaps nicer words than being referred to as “geriatric”. When considering our cats’ well-being we need to look at three different aspects – their physical health, their cognitive health and also their emotional health. Many physical health conditions – such as kidney disease, thyroid illness, dental issues, arthritis and increased blood pressure – simply become more common as our cats get older. The earlier that these conditions are detected the better the outcome will be for our cats. An
annual check up is recommend for our senior cats, whereas a twice a year check up would be suggested for the super senior cats. Feline cognitive dysfunction syndrome, or dementia, will affect the way in which our cats think and learn. Cats with this condition show varying problems, but can include wandering behaviour, meowing for no reason, or a change in toileting routines. There may be no easy solution to these issues, but often practical advice can be given by vets and vet nurses on how to manage these changes as best as possible. Emotional health is best thought of as our cats’ well-being. Often simple changes such as appropriate sleeping places, easy to use litter trays, more accessible food and water bowls will make our cats’ lives easier. Even just grooming our cats can make a dramatic improvement to their happiness.

Ukraine Charity Concert ~ Saturday 26th March 2022 The Sheringham Shantymen, working with the Rev Christian Heycocks at St. Peters’ Church Sheringham, entertained a packed audience at the Church on Saturday 26th March to raise funds for the people of Ukraine who are being ruthlessly invaded by Russia.
The Shantymen were pleased to welcome Michael Gurney DL, The High Sheriff of Norfolk to introduce the event and Duncan Baker MP to say a few words at the end of the concert.
The Shantymen performed two sets of musical Sea Shanties including some specially written songs, one highlighting & joking about how we coped locally during the Covid crisis, and one called ‘Make the Difference’ looking at how people can help in times of disaster. This

latter song, written by Shantyman Terry Read, was so popular that it was requested as an encore at the end of our performance
Galton Blackiston, owner and chef patron of Morston Hall, offered an afternoon tea for four people valued at £120 and valid until March 2023 which Messrs Gurney & Baker splendidly auctioned for the wonderful sum of £300.
The Sheringham Shantymen wanted to do their bit to support Ukraine in this this crisis, and with the wonderful help of everyine involved at St. Peters’ raised the excellent sum of £4,907.77p during the evening; all of which will be sent to the DEC (Disaters Emergency Committee) for them to distribute as they see fit.

The Shantymen feel privileged to have managed this event and would like to thank everyone for their selfless generosity during the evening. Editor’s Recipe
Hot Cross Buns
Easter is almost upon us; the hot cross buns have been in the supermarkets for several weeks (do they ever go away?) but is it just me or do they taste a bit plain and boring? Well, that could all change by having a go at making them yourself. Nothing beats the warm, freshly baked home-made version (as you can see from the missing one in the picture!) and simpler to make than you might think. They do take a little time with the proving and kneading but well worth the effort compared with the rather squashed and sparsely fruited shop bought variety. If you haven’t tried making yeasted dough before, this is a very forgiving recipe to begin with. The recipe makes 12 buns, best eaten on the day they are made, but if you have any left over, they make and excellent bread and butter pudding.
Ingredients 500g strong white bread flour 75g caster sugar 2 teaspoons ground mixed spice 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon zest of 1 lemon 2 level teaspoon salt 10g fast action dried yeast
40g butter 300ml full fat milk 1 egg 200g sultanas 50g chopped mixed peel Oil for greasing 3 tablespoons of plain flour and about 100ml water for the crosses golden syrup or honey for glazing
Method Mix together the bread flour, sugar, spices and lemon zest in a large bowl. Add the salt to one side of the bowl and the yeast to the opposite side (salt will kill the yeast if mixed directly). Melt the butter in a small pan and warm the milk in a separate pan or the microwave until tepid. Add the melted butter and half the milk to the dry mix then add the egg. Mix together with your hands, add the remaining milk a little at a time until you have a soft dough. You may have some milk left over. Tip out the dough onto a floured surface and knead by hand, stretching and folding the dough and mixing in the dried fruit as you go. Knead for about 10 minutes until you have a smooth, stretchy dough. Form into a ball and place in an oiled bowl, cover and leave to prove somewhere warm (not too near a radiator) until it doubles in size (about 1 ½ hours).
Turn out on a floured surface again and knead for another 5 minutes, put back in the bowl, cover and prove again for another hour or until doubled in size. Turn out onto the floured surface and divide into 12 equal pieces and shape into balls. Place on a lined baking sheet (you may need 2), then place inside a large, clean plastic bag (not letting them touch the bag) and leave to prove until doubled in size. Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/Gas7. For the crosses mix the plain flour with enough water to make a loose paste and put into a piping bag. When the buns have proved pipe a cross on each one. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden. Place on a cooling rack and before they cool brush with warmed golden syrup or honey to glaze.
Enjoy and Happy Easter

Visiting restrictions remain on inpatient wards in Norfolk and Waveney The NHS in Norfolk and Waveney has announced that visiting on inpatient wards will remain suspended due to continued high rates of COVID-19 infections.
The restrictions affect all local hospitals and trusts with inpatient wards, except for Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust’s acute mental health wards.
Currently, visiting restrictions remain in place which means we offer a system of compassionate visiting for example those receiving end of life care, maternity services, children, patients with mental health issues such as dementia, a learning disability or autism. People are urged to check their local hospital website for further information and to discuss individual cases with the teams in charge of these wards.
The difficult decision to extend the suspension on visiting on inpatient wards has been taken following high COVID-19 infection rates in the community. It is hoped the measures will reduce the transmission of the virus into local hospitals from visitors and help protect both patients and staff.
Cath Byford, Chief Nurse, NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We know that continuing to extend restrictions on visiting will be disappointing and it is not a decision we have taken lightly. We understand how important the support of family and friends can be for patients in their recovery while they are in hospital, however, our number one priority is to keep everyone – patients, visitors, and staff – safe.
“Exceptions will continue to be made on compassionate grounds, on a case-by-case basis. These visits must be pre-arranged with the ward team in charge.
“Restricting visiting is always a very last resort for us. We appreciate the co-operation of our patients and their families during this challenging time, and we will monitor and review this guidance in a fortnight and will keep the public informed of any changes.
Mrs Byford added: “We continue to encourage local people to help us by continuing to use infection prevention practices by washing your hands and wearing face coverings in all healthcare settings. We know that COVID-19 hasn’t gone away so it is so important we continue to follow these prevention methods.”

Super Quick Chick!
There are times when you’ve been working so hard that your body really needs some good quality food, but you’re too exhausted to make it happen. That's when you need a couple of recipes up your sleeve that require little thought or effort, but pack as much energy and comfort as possible.
This recipe, which I call my emergency chicken, is one of the best. It’s so easy and quick to do which is great when you’re super tired but is utterly delicious and satisfying.
Use the best quality ingredients that you can afford and add in any other veg you may have to hand, especially cooked leftovers. I use microwave rice for these occasions, which again take only 2 minutes and are very reasonably priced and easy to keep stocked in your cupboard. You can throw this together in 15 minutes, and it’s much better for you than giving in to junk food!
Serve with microwave rice (only 2 mins to cook!)
Place onion, bacon and chicken in a deep non-stick frying pan or wok and fry with the olive oil for 5 minutes.
Add in the herbs and garlic, and the mushrooms, and continue gently cooking until the chicken is cooked through, being careful not allow it to catch.
Pour in the cream once cooked through, stir and check seasoning.
Allow to simmer for a couple of minutes.
Microwave your rice and serve the chicken alongside.

Steaming into Weybourne, Clickity clack, clickity clack, Then on our way to Holt, But we’ll be back, be back, be back. Thru’ the cutting, rabbits beware Don’t play on the rails, You’ll lose your tails, Take care, take care, take care!
See me rolling down the track, Clickity clack, clickity clack, Smokestack streaming, engine gleaming, Passengers waving from front to back. Without a jolt, we pull into Holt, Chuff chuff…..puff puff….. we’re there! People milling, carriages filling, There’s great excitement in the air. Footnote: For all the dedicated followers of steam. Carers Trust Responds to the Chancellor’s Spring Statement
The Chancellor, the Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP, today presented his Spring Statement to Parliament.
Responding to the Statement and what it means for unpaid family carers across the UK, Carers Trust’s Chief Executive Officer, Kirsty McHugh, said:
“Carers Trust research last month showed that unpaid carers are at the sharp end of the cost-of-living crisis. However, the Chancellor has again missed the opportunity to support unpaid carers, without whom our health and social care system would simply collapse.
This is in sharp contrast to the Welsh and Scottish Governments who have recognised the importance of unpaid carers with the announcement of extra financial support.
“Overall, unpaid carers will be bitterly disappointed by today’s Spring Statement. There was little announced that shows the Government understands their plight. Many were missing bill payments, cutting back on food and borrowing money before the recent cost of living crisis. Even the minority of unpaid carers who are eligible for Carer’s Allowance face a real terms decrease in what they receive, as the
www.rosevillapublications.co.uk
30
allowance is due to increase by only £2.10 a week from April to £69.70. This nowhere near enough to keep up with inflation. “In addition, we are worried that there was little in the announcement which will help local carer organisations, without whom many unpaid carers would not be able to cope day to day. Many are coping with spiralling fuel bills and difficulties with recruitment.
“We must ensure that the extra funding raised by the forthcoming Health and Social Care Levy helps a transformation in the local social care landscape.”

Do you still need a solicitor if you are getting divorced online? by Maria Endall, Family Solicitor, Hayes + Storr Solicitors
The fact that divorcing couples can now apply online for their divorce and, from April 2022, won’t need to prove fault for the breakdown of their marriage, will make it easier for the tech-savvy to apply for a divorce without the need for a solicitor. But what about the financial implications of getting divorce? Who gets the house, or the tenancy? How are you going to ensure that pension assets are shared equally? What about the family car you spent so long saving or paying for? And if there is a business, how do you fairly take that into account? Do you even know the full extent of your spouse’s finances?
It is important to know that, even after you have obtained a final order in the divorce (currently still known as the decree absolute), yours and your spouse’s claims for financial relief arising out of the marriage will remain open – unless you also get an order from the court stating how the property and finances are to be split. The new online divorce process will not tell you how to do this, as splitting the matrimonial finances must be dealt with separately.
This is why you will still need advice from a solicitor. Couples who think they have sorted out their finances once they’ve separated, could be doing themselves out of a fair and
proper settlement. Alternatively, if you think you’ve got away lightly and still managed to walk away with the lion’s share of your assets after the divorce, you’re still open to having a claim made against you in the future unless you get a court order making the split of the assets binding and enforceable.

Eligible residents urged to come forward for their Spring Booster
Health leaders in Norfolk and Waveney are urging those that are eligible for the Spring Booster to come forward and book an appointment, following last week’s announcement of the programme launch for the over 75s and those aged 12+ who are immunosuppressed.
The Spring Booster programme is designed to boost protection for those that were the first during the Autumn to get their jab, to ensure that their vaccine protection remains topped up over the spring and summer months.
As it has been throughout the rollout of Norfolk and Waveney’s vaccination programme, local response has been swift and positive, with thousands of eligible people coming forward last week to book appointments.
Eligible people are being contacted by the NHS to make a Spring Booster appointment either by letter, text message, or from a phone call from their GP practice. However, anyone that is eligible can also go ahead and make an appointment via the National Booking Service. People are advised to wait until around six months since their last dose to receive maximum effectiveness from the Spring Booster but will be able to receive it from a minimum of three months since their last dose.
A reminder of who is eligible for the Spring Booster:
• adults aged 75 years and over • residents in care homes for older adults • individuals aged 12 years and over who have a weakened immune system
The NHS will prioritise contacting those people whose clinical need is greatest, starting with those who have had a bigger gap since their last dose, then working through the cohort to invite others who have waited less time. Meanwhile, local vaccination clinics and health providers are reporting that almost a quarter of booked appointments over the last week were unattended. Anyone who has a booked appointment is encouraged to turn up for their appointment or cancel it so that the appointment can be offered to someone else.
Howard Martin, Director of Population Health Management and Health Inequalities at NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said “We are pleased to see so many people coming forward to take up the offer of their Spring Booster. There are over 4,000 appointments already booked for next week in clinics across Norfolk and Waveney, which goes to show how important the vaccine remains to help people enjoy life without COVID-19 restrictions.
“Whilst we welcome people coming forward to take up their jab, it is essential at this time that if you do make a booked appointment that you

attend or cancel, as vaccine supplies are calibrated to meet local demand and we don’t want anyone to miss out.
“And while the Spring Booster programme continues at pace, I would remind anyone who hasn’t yet come forward for a vaccine that the evergreen offer of first, second, and booster doses remain available at sites across the patch. “Please do take up the offer of the free Jab Cab to get to the vaccination clinic or walk-in centre of your choice. And the Jab Cab is available to anyone who needs to make an appointment to register one of their overseas vaccinations with the NHS, it’s designed to support anyone to access the benefits of the vaccination programme.”
Pre-booked appointments can be made using the National Booking Service or by calling 119. Walk-in clinics are advertised on the Norfolk and Waveney walk-in site, which can be found at https://apps.norfolk.gov.uk/WalkIn/.
Anyone who is COVID-19 positive who has a booked appointment is urged to cancel their appointment in good time and wait until they are symptom free before they have their vaccine. Following national guidance, adults who are 18+ should wait 28 days from a positive COVID-19 test and be fit, well and symptom free before they receive a dose of the vaccine, and that increases to 84 days for those aged 12-17.
Charity urges Norfolk and Waveney residents to check for ‘silent’ conditions that can cause deadly strokes
32
Leading British doctor Dr Hilary Jones is backing the Stroke Association’s campaign to urge the public to get checked as new data suggests that more than 139,000 people in Norfolk and Waveney could be living with a ‘silent’ condition that causes deadly strokes. More than half of stroke patients have high blood pressure and almost one in five have an irregular heart rhythm known as atrial fibrillation. Both conditions are often without symptoms. The charity warns that missed diagnosis and lack of treatment, which has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, could increase the number of strokes by thousands. Dr Hilary Jones is a GP, presenter and writer, known for his television appearances on shows such as Good Morning Britain and Lorraine. Dr Jones said: “It’s vital that you get checked for high blood pressure and atrial fibrillation so you can avoid a deadly stroke. “In many people, these conditions often don’t have obvious symptoms – so taking the time to get checked could prevent a stroke. You can get your blood pressure checked at your local pharmacy, at an NHS Health Check appointment, at your GP surgery and at home. Juliet Bouverie OBE, Chief Executive at the Stroke Association said: “Pre-pandemic, diagnosis rates of high blood pressure and atrial fibrillation were already low. So we’re incredibly worried that the pandemic’s knock-on effect on healthcare services means thousands of people are unknowingly living with these deadly conditions. “Heart health affects brain health. So, we are urging you to act now and make sure your heart is healthy by getting checked for high blood pressure and atrial fibrillation. Don’t let the first sign of high blood pressure or atrial fibrillation be a life-changing stroke. “We know it can be difficult to get an appointment at your GP, but it’s vital that you persist when making this call or visit your local pharmacy and get checked there. These simple checks could save your life.” Go to the Stroke Association website for more information on high blood pressure and stroke and atrial fibrillation and stroke To find your nearest pharmacy where you can get your blood pressure checked go to: Local Well Pharmacy / Lloyds Pharmacy Cromer Times April 2022

CROMER HONOURS 2022 -This includes those nominated in 2021 Karen & Michael Ayden Karen, a senior nurse at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital during the pandemic getting up at 5:30am. Michael, Manager at Ashdown Court, many years helping residents far beyond the call of duty especially during the pandemic even taking in Fish and Chips during his holiday, Michael is also the treasurer and secretary of Cromer Hospital Friends and treasurer to ‘Stable Door’ in Sheringham. Both were due to retire around the time of their nomination. The Polar Bear from The Painted Attic “I would like to nominate the Polar Bear who, maybe on its way to the Arctic during lockdown, stopped over in Cromer and has been residing in The Painted Attic. I think everyone has found this period of lockdown the hardest so the presence of the bear in the town has been a most welcome visitor, although technically I am not sure its visit was strictly in accordance with the regulations and guidance, but maybe there was an exemption. As someone who does not live in Cromer and has been unable to visit, I have so enjoyed the antics of the bear on social media over these months, as have friends who I have then gone on to share with. The thought, preparation, attention to detail, humour and entertainment has been wonderful and very much appreciated. The bear seems to have captured the mood, issues, emotions and challenges of us all. This has made the whole experience more bearable and will have lifted so many spirits. I understand for the last photo that the bear has left the town …. Was that on The Polar Express? I hope that if this nomination is successful, the owner of the shop whose window the bear occupies is able to pass the award on”. Tim Adams For initiating Cromer Cares which helped so many people during the pandemic and for all his hard work for the town and community.
8. Presentation of Cromer Honours Awards & Youth Awards Tyler Wragg – Year 11 Cromer Academy The mental health drive at Cromer Academy has taken off because of Tyler. He is one of our Heads of School and has been instrumental in raising the profile of mental health within our school community. He has orchestrated mental health training for our team of prefects so that they may positively impact the lives of our younger Cromer community. Furthermore, under his leadership, an event aptly named ‘Eggceptional without Exception’ (a play on the school motto ‘Exceptional without Exception’) was launched in July 2021. The event involved teachers and pupils of the school houses competing in a quiz with the school as an audience. The winning house was allowed to break eggs on the Principal’s head in front of the aforementioned audience. The spectacle raised £286 for the mental health charity Mind. The event was such a success that pupils have asked for it to become an annual feature of the school calendar. Tyler also took it upon himself to contact the MP for North Norfolk Duncan Baker to discuss all manner of issues relating to North Norfolk and how these issues will impact the youth of Cromer. So intrigued by Tyler’s passion during a zoom meeting, Mr Baker asked to meet him in person. Tyler invited the MP to come along to school and address pupils in assembly and field some questions. Andrew Clark – Year 8 Cromer Academy A passionate leader in our eco schools eco programme, Andrew actively seeks to enhance everyone’s awareness of environmental issues in Cromer. Indeed, he has not only written to esteemed figures such as Prince Charles and Sir David Attenborough but has also received personal replies thanking him for his actions. As a member of the school eco committee Andrew is a font of all knowledge and a driving force behind many of the ideas presented. Andrew also embarked on an exceptional journey of personally picking litter in 14:58 Page 1 Poors & Ploughlets Apr 22_Layout 1 up 28/03/2022 9. Weather Forecast
The past three months have provided a lot of fair weather especially January and March with temperatures fluctuating either side of average. February produced the wettest spells and the stormiest.
The first week of April looks likely to remind us that cold air only needs the right wind direction and it will be down here. The rest of the month will be mixed across the board and quite wet. May will be an improvement on April but we will have to wait to the last third of the month to get the best of the weather. June will mirror May so summer will be only slowly arriving. Just now and again we will get some very warm days, but this will quickly turn things thundery. Ned Nimbus

Sir Norman says: “I am delighted to be the new President of the Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society. I am acutely aware of the difference that listening to music or singing can have in improving our mental health, whether it is reducing stress or helping those with dementia, and the last two years of the Covid-19 pandemic have in particular highlighted the positive impact the creative arts can have on our health and wellbeing. Now that public performances are able to take place again, it is really important when we can to attend and support these events.”

Golfers Go Wild at Royal Cromer Over 60 members of Royal Cromer Golf Club were recently entertained by the slides and ideas of two of their number, explaining the wildlife value of the golf course.
Professor David Harper, a retired academic ecologist, revealed surveys had shown that over 300 species of plants grew on the course and over 100 species of birds had been seen on or over it. Tony Brooks, an expert wildlife photographer, enthralled members with the wonderful, detailed pictures of insects feeding on bramble flowers, of rare migrant birds perched on gorse bushes and many other aspects of the wonderful network of nature which golf management supports.
Members were reminded that the Golf Club owns almost all of the Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) that is the Overstrand -Cromer cliffs, a site designated by

Professor Harper praised the Golf Club for its very supportive attitude to wildlife. Over 20 bird boxes have been erected in trees around the club house and more will be erected each winter on the course. Over 150 native trees have been planted in a new spinney - most beside the public footpath that starts beside the Practice Ground at Overstrand and many more are planned. Bat boxes are being erected on the back of the clubhouse, because surveys on several evenings last summer detected the sounds of five different species.

Golf is an activity very compatible with wildlife conservation. Members were shown this by pictures of wildlife on every one of the course’s habitats - from sand and bare ground through greens and fairways to the tall grass in the rough, the gorse/bramble scrubs and the small woodland area down by the Overstrand Road. A repeat talk is planned in April for those members who missed the first one.

government because of its unique geological value and rare species of plants and insects. Ironically, the scientific value is there because of the mosaic of different geological and habitat conditions caused by cliff erosion, the very feature that both golfers and walkers know is imminently going to remove the cliff path and golfing holes.

News from the Club house
We’re open! As from 9th April we are playing bowls at Cromer Marrams, on the Runton Road. We are also delighted that at 2pm, Sunday 10th, we play our first club spoon drive and officially ‘open’ the defibrillator on site with Cromer’s deputy mayor, Pat West. The green has had its final weed and feed treatment and the sprinklers have been repaired. So off we go! The clubhouse has been spruced up with a new lick of paint thanks to several members and had a good clean and tidy courtesy of other members.
This season the club will compete in the Mens NBA league on Wednesday evenings, the mixed Federation league on Tuesday evenings and the mixed NANSA league on midweek afternoons, along with
cup competitions. We will play over 20 friendly matches with clubs from as far afield as Southampton and Newark, as well as with teams from within the county and locally. There are matches most weekend afternoons and some in midweek. So, there is a game for you, at a time to suit and at a level of competitiveness to suit also. Added to this, for 22 weeks, 7 days a week you can play a social ‘roll up’ or play in club competition games. Membership is only £65 for the year, a bargain!
If you are not sure you wish to be involved as a club member just yet, then the green is open for the public to play, as and when open. Just turn up with smooth soled, flat shoes, borrow a set of bowls and play for 1 hour at £2 per person or 2 hours for £3.50 per person. We are looking forward to welcoming you. Spectators are also welcome at any of our forthcoming fixtures:

Foundation for their generous assistance."
As a result, Vikings have also been able to obtain a new notice board which they hope to display in the Victory or when the Reef in Sheringham "opens a window" for them to train there. Subsequently, more youngsters will benefit from what the club Vikings at the Victory Pool in North Walhas to offer and keep up to date sham with the board with the club’s activities. John Holden
The money has been spent on some training equipment, off set insurance costs, subsidise coaches’ lifesaving certificates and child protection courses and subsequently kept core costs down, albeit for a short period, which in turn has kept swimmers' fees frozen. At the same time, the club has been making an effort by doing their own fund raising and not just relied on this grant alone. This has given the club just enough time to recover from the lock down periods. Chair of the club Sarah Buchan said: “Excuse the puns, but this grant has been a lifeline and helped us to keep afloat, otherwise we may have gone under. We would like to thank the Norfolk Community
