No work doesn't stop work experience! Turf cutting event marks start of hospital expansion at Cromer A major pandemic has not stopped students from a Norwich school getting work experience.

Continued from front cover... They were joined by Norwich-based firm Pentaco Construction Ltd which won the contract for the work, which will see the refurbishment and extension of the Davison Unit, a disused ward at the hospital.

Aviva, the multinational insurance company, set Sixth Form students from University Technical College Norfolk (UTCN) a four-day challenge. The challenge was to think about ways to help Aviva's customers and better serve them through the current COVID-19 crisis.

The North Norfolk Macmillan Centre is being funded and built in partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the N&N Hospitals Charity.

The challenge was launched via Microsoft Teams - the online conferencing software - and involved small teams of Year 12 students, who were given a week to develop a workable solution to the challenge. Each team was guided by a representative from Aviva, meeting ‘virtually' through Teams, to develop their ideas using either an existing App or developing a new piece of software. Their ideas were presented to Aviva, again, via Teams.

The building work on the £4.85million project is expected to take around a year, with the new centre enabling patients with cancer to access treatment and support closer to home.

The centre will include: • Six chemotherapy treatment chairs with capacity to treat up to 36 patients a day. • Three new clinic rooms and two new minor procedure rooms, creating an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments annually and space for new cancer diagnostics, including prostate biopsy. • A Macmillan cancer information and support centre. • The new unit will also free up space in the main Cromer Hospital building to deliver an extra 600 surgical procedures in dermatology, urology, vascular surgery and pain management.

The prize-winning group under the mentorship of Jo Satterley, Aviva Business Analysis Practice Lead, consisted of Shai Brown, Owen Appleton, Annie Mbawo, Yaser Abdelaoui and Nathan Wakefield. Their customer focused solution was achieved through fantastic teamwork, collaboration and research resulting in a slick presentation to the Aviva judging panel.

Neil Baxter, Resource Strategy Lead, from Aviva said: "We were impressed with both their proposal of multivariant testing of the website which the team had designed, and with the quality of their presentation and their research skills. They looked at other industry sectors as well as other insurance companies to help formulate their ideas."

Jo Haywood, chair of Macmillan’s North Norfolk Fundraising Committee, said: “It’s wonderful to see building work progressing and this will make such a difference to cancer patients living in North Norfolk who are currently travelling to Norwich for their treatment. Cromer Hospital was originally built using public donations so there’s a great parallel there between what happened then and the current work. This means so much to the people of North Norfolk.”

Nathan Wakefield, UTCN Year 12 Student, said: "I found this experience with Aviva allowed me to get a better insight into the world of work and how teams operate in large businesses to find a solution to a difficult problem."

Owen Appleton, UTCN Year 12 Student, said: "I found the Aviva Hackathon to be a great experience in which I enhanced my individual and team working skills. Home working on Microsoft Teams was a tough challenge, but through excellent teamwork we managed to pull through and work together as a team extremely well. Joanna, our Aviva mentor, had experience that taught the whole team a large amount and was a real eye opener to different career paths within Aviva."

Sam Higginson, Chief Executive of NNUH said: “This is an important step in delivering extra services at Cromer as part of our mission to deliver first class treatments to the population in North Norfolk and further afield. We are delighted to see the work get underway providing additional capacity to meet the needs of an older, rural patient group.”

Shai Brown, UTCN Year 12 Student, said: "I used the Aviva Hackathon to my advantage to improve my team leading skills and team working skills. It was an amazing opportunity for all of us, as students, to see how large businesses are coping during the pandemic. Overall, this was very insightful, and I know we all had a lot to take away from this challenge."

A large Selection of Garden Furniture in stock

Sophie Skipp, UTCN's Employer Engagement Co-ordinator is full of praise for the outcome of the exercise, saying: "In all, 80 students and 12 Aviva employees were involved in the project. At UTCN we prepare our students for the working world. It's in our DNA. When a business comes to us sharing how they have adapted their working practices from home it would be criminal not to mirror this in school. These students can face their future employers in interviews with real experiences of collaborating online, just like their parents. The dedication and flexibility of all those involved in adapting to the current working environment is a fantastic example of the commitment to UTCN shown by members of our Industry Liaison Group."

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offe fers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

No Fault Divorce Bill Receives Royal Assent!

The biggest change in divorce law in our lifetime is now set to become a reality as the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill receives Royal Assent, first promised by the government in April 2018. Family lawyers up and down the country are delighted that the bill has reached the end of its parliamentary journey after years of campaigning.

The change means that couples in England and Wales will no longer have to assign blame in order to be granted a divorce. Something which could help reduce conflict between separating couples and encourage families to look to the future rather than taking part in the "blame game".

So what is current divorce process?

The main piece of legislation dealing with divorce is the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973. In order to obtain a divorce you need to prove that the marriage has been broken down irretrievably. This can be proven by relying upon one or more of the following facts:

1. Adultery

2. "Unreasonable behaviour" 3. Desertion

4. 2 years separation with consent

5. 5 years separation

As you will see, three of the facts are based on a period of separation. If this does not apply to your circumstances you must rely upon

either adultery or "unreasonable behaviour". Unreasonable behaviour is the ground that is most commonly cited on divorce. Due to the very nature of these facts, the system is fault-based and relies upon one party apportioning blame to the other.

How will no fault divorce change the system?

Instead of having to apportion blame, couples will be able to simply say that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. This can be done jointly or individually. Under the new system, there must be a minimum six-month period between the lodging of a petition to the divorce being made final.

When will this come into effect?

It will take some time for things to get up and running as there will need be a number of changes to the rules, procedure and forms so that no fault divorce can be implemented. It is hoped that couples will be able to obtain a no fault divorce from Autumn 2021.

However, there are those who remain concerned about the changes and how the process will actually work in terms of the six-month notice Summer period. The Law Society have suggested that the six month period should

begin when the divorce application is received by the respondent rather than when the divorce is applied for. They argue that this would ensure that the couple are on the same page from the start and would have sufficient time to seek legal and financial advice. They have asked the government to consider their concerns in and it may be that the finer details will be tweaked before it is fully implemented.

At Clapham & Collinge we have a dedicated team of experts who are able to provide you with all of the necessary information, support and legal advice on family law.

Time for Sea Change

“It makes me feel violated, belittled and excluded; as if who I am is misunderstood, and that I belong to an evil group” Said Elizabeth (not her real name), who is Mixed Race and lives and works in North Norfolk. She is describing how repeated unintentional racism makes her feel. The times, for example, when a colleague, who is basically kind and did not mean to offend, talked openly in the workplace about being afraid because they were lost in an area inhabited by a lot of Black people. Or, when a colleague refused to collaborate because they are “not working in the cotton fields you know!”. These and other frequent slights add up and tear down Elizabeth at her very core, affecting her mental health. And sadly, this is typical treatment meted out by both strangers and friends on Black, Mixed Race and Ethnic Minority people in North Norfolk. Where white people make up 98.6% of resident population. A percentage that is increasing as people of colour move away to live in areas where they are welcomed and valued.

perpetrators of racism. Strategies for local action that will be effective in bringing sea change is required. We need letters written, face-to-face meetings had, training given, advice sought, repentance done, forgiveness offered and souls mended. It will be a transformation of our warm Norfolk hearts in our lively towns and pretty flint villages. The transformation will flow through pubs, dinner parties, business meetings and school corridors. It will affect our beautiful marshes and fill up our huge skies. It will make the Universe glad.

‘Crabbing at Blakeney’ pencil, Emma Blount, 2020

But most white residents here, like myself before I read ‘Why I no Longer Talk to White People about Race’ by Reni Eddo-Lodge, do not understand what it is like to be treated in this way purely because of looks and cultural heritage, which should be a source of pride and honour, not shame and exclusion.

We think we are not a part of the problem because we would not dream of saying. “You should be hung(sic)! That’s how I feel about them and I’m going to let them know”. This was shouted at Elizabeth in a North Norfolk shop about a year ago while onlookers did nothing. Deeply painful abuse at a whole other level which ended in a conviction.

I was devastated to learn from talking to my Black, Mixed Race and Ethnic Minority neighbours, that white people stare, make comments, follow people in stores, refuse to interview people for jobs, address people by the n-word, and do not let their children play with children who are not white.

NEw STOCK

Racism is extremely harmful, ubiquitous and utterly pointless. It happens to a few but affects us all.

I read, I listened and I stopped. I stopped ignoring it, I stopped tolerating it, I stopped minimising it, I stopped excusing it, I stopped deflecting it and I stopped feeling guilty about it. It was a painful, humiliating and exhilarating relief.

I then started to look for solutions to the problem; we could all challenge racism, at work, at play, at home and in our own thoughts. Social support, networking and therapy is needed for healing and improving interaction skills, both for the recipients and

Residents in Norfolk are being reminded that they are the most important link in the Test and Trace system The steps to take if you or any member of your household display Covid 19 symptoms are simple and can be key in preventing infections being spread.

we all play our part to protect everyone around us. We all have friends and family that we want to keep safe – whether that’s parents, elderly grandparents, and even our children. And we need everyone to play their part to help us do that. We all have to work together to keep each other safe.”

If you are symptomatic you must isolate as soon as you notice symptoms and to have no face to face contact with anyone outside of your household. It is important to do this straight away, and for everyone in the household to isolate as they could also be infectious even without symptoms.

Cath Byford, Chief Nurse with NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Our call to everyone is, if you have coronavirus symptoms then self-isolate, get a test and help us track down people you have been in contact with. It’s one way that together we can beat this virus.”

As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next.

But Test and Trace isn’t only about symptomatic individuals: when a positive test result arrives, teams of contact tracers will search for everyone the Covid positive individual has been in recent contact with and will alert them.

Cllr Bill Borrett, Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “This isn’t just about protecting ourselves, but making sure

If you are alerted by NHS Test and Trace, you must isolate for 14 days after your contact with the individual. If you develop symptoms, you must book a test at the NHS coronavirus website and your household must isolate.

Keeping yourselves and others safe

Coronavirus is still with us. Cases in Norfolk are low and we want to keep them that way. The best thing to do to protect ourselves and others is to continue to wash our hands regularly, keep our distance from others and wear a face covering in shops and on public transport.

This ‘ere Coronavirus Well thas a rummun There ent no stoppin’ it That just keep on a comin’

To protect others, you and everyone living in your house should isolate straight away if you show symptoms. The symptoms are: a new continuous cough; fever; or a loss or change in your taste and smell.

As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Everyone is eligible to get a test if they have symptoms. You can choose either a drive-through test or a home test kit. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next.

Best yew ken dew Is keep washing yer ‘ands Keep yer distance from others Take care with yer plans

NHS Test and Trace will contact people who test positive for Covid-19. They will ask you about who you have been in contact with from two days before onset of symptoms to seven days after. This will identify people at risk who could pass on the virus before (or without) showing symptoms themselves.

Pop on yer mask, boi In shops or on bus Think of the vulnerable Don’t cause a fuss

Local Outbreak Control Plan

A Norfolk Local Outbreak Control Plan has been launched under the strapline Protect Ourselves, Protect Others, Protect Norfolk to set out how the county will support the national NHS Test and Trace programme to prevent and contain the spread of coronavirus.

If yew have a fever And feel unwell Just yew stay hum Call 111 and tell

The plan sets out how Norfolk’s Public Health will work with a range of County Council departments and community partners to prevent local outbreaks in the first place. However, if outbreaks do occur, the plan sets out how they will be tracked in specific work places, settings, and communities and managed to limit further transmission. Also detailed is how Norfolk residents can find further guidance and support.

Then hold yew hard For a good couple’a weeks Slow yew down Until it’s past its peek

Norfolk’s Director of Public Health has led on the development of our Local Outbreak Control Plan in partnership with district councils, NHS Chief Executives and the Norfolk Resilience Forum.

It was developed after the Government announced that every area of England should produce a plan to prevent and manage local outbreaks of coronavirus as lockdown measures are eased.

Prevention is key, and with further restrictions having been lifted, measures such as hand washing, social distancing in public places, and encouraging people to access testing immediately if they are unwell, are more important than ever. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

Norfolk and Waveney GP surgeries performing higher than average in GP patient survey

GP practices in Norfolk and Waveney have come out highly in the national annual survey of patient satisfaction.

Overall, they score higher than the national average in a range of important indicators such as helpful staff, access to appointments and satisfaction with their care.

The GP Patient Survey is an independent survey run by Ipsos MORI on behalf of NHS England. It is sent out to more than two million people across the UK annually. The survey results show how people feel about their GP practice. Scores can be analysed In the survey, GP practices in Norfolk and Waveney scored above average in the following areas:

• 91% found the receptionist helpful • 87% patients felt their health care professional recognised and/or understood their mental health needs • 84% described the overall experience of their GP surgery as good. • 79% felt they had enough support from local organisations to manage a long-term condition (or conditions)

• 78% of patients who have tried to use their GP practice website found it easy to access information or services. • 68% they found it easy to get through to their GP practice on the phone • 77% were happy with the types of appointments they were offered • 68% of patients rated their overall experience of making an appointment as good. • 66% were happy with the appointment times offered available • 68% were happy with how quickly they had received care

The results, above, are for all of Norfolk and Waveney’s GP practices together.

This year’s survey was completed just as the country was entering ‘lockdown’ because of Coronavirus and before many changes were made to health and care services in response to the global pandemic. Since the survey was carried out, many GP practices have transformed the way they operate, changing the ways that people can access help and advice.

Many have introduced online consultations and online booking systems and where this has been

introduced, many more people have had their health worries resolved more quickly either by advice online and over the phone or in person.

Dr Anoop Dhesi, a local GP and Chair of NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group said: “This is a fantastic achievement for our colleagues working in practices – both patient facing and behind the scenes. It is great to see that people’s experiences are so positive and as practices continue to adapt and move some of their services online it is reassuring to see that patients are appreciating this and finding it beneficial. Each and every one of our practices puts patients at the heart of what they do and the survey results evidence the hard work which they put in on a regular basis. These results are also testimony to the increase in partnership working as our colleagues at the CCG, local pharmacies, hospitals and community colleagues all work together to provide patient-centric care.”

New orthopaedic service at Cromer Hospital

A new service for hand and foot surgery has been set up at Cromer & District Hospital, as part of a plan to boost treatments for patients as services get back on track following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Patients are receiving day case treatment in the Muriel Thoms Day Procedure Unit, using injections of local anaesthetic, called a nerve block, to numb the area which avoids the need for a general anaesthetic. About eight patients are treated each week for conditions such as Dupuytren's disease, arthritis of the thumb (trapeziectomy) and various foot conditions related to the bone and soft tissue.

Matt Keeling, Deputy Divisional Operations Director for Surgery, said: “There has been a fantastic team effort to launch this new

orthopaedic surgery service at Cromer. It is proving popular with our patients who receive the best of both worlds: a friendly local service at Cromer, plus expert care from surgeons and anaesthetists visiting from our main site in Norwich.

“We are delivering more treatment sessions for patients at Cromer now than we were before the pandemic. This has meant adjusting the way in which we organise the building, making best use of the space to ensure social distancing and new procedures.”

works in non-Covid areas to further reduce the risk to patients. Extra hygiene measures have been introduced along with social distancing measures.

Changes have also been made at Cromer to phlebotomy (blood taking) services with an appointment system to avoid queues and minimise contact between patients.

Before surgery patients must self-isolate for two weeks and test negative for Covid-19 before they are treated to reduce the risk of complications and illness. The surgery is delivered by a dedicated team which only

Police warning as fraudsters make tax scam calls

Police are warning people of scammers claiming to be from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) tricking them into thinking they owe tax or debts and asking them to pay or purchase Google or Amazon gift cards.

Norfolk Constabulary has received three reports of victims being scammed by this method in Norfolk last week alone trying to claim a total of over £11,000.

In the first case, the victim, a man in his 30s from King’s Lynn, was phoned Thursday 9 July 2020 and told he owed outstanding tax and legal action would be taken if he did not

Another victim, in her 70s, in Great Yarmouth, was called Friday 10 July 2020 to say she owed £2,397.64 for specific tax years and asked to pay in cash or Google Play vouchers. A third victim, in her 30s, in Wymondham, received a call on the same day from someone claiming to be from tax fraud investigation to say she owed £1,999 and had purchased Amazon and Google gift cards and sent the codes to the fraudsters.

Chief Inspector Matt Dyson said: "We would like to make residents aware that they may be contacted via a phone call, a voicemail or text message to try to convince them they are being called by HMRC about unpaid tax, sometimes threatening legal action or arrest if it is not paid urgently.

How to protect yourself: • HMRC will never use texts to tell you about a tax rebate or penalty or ever ask for payment in this way. • Telephone numbers and text messages can easily be spoofed. You should never trust the number you see on your telephone display. • If you receive a suspicious cold call, end it immediately.

Gardening in Lockdown

At the beginning of Lockdown, I was very concerned that I would not be allowed to go to my allotment, something I have tendered for many years.

When I heard on the radio and then read, that the government had allowed allotments to be used for exercise provided we social distanced, I was over the moon.

I have worked in the area of social care, mental health and special needs education for several years, using Outdoor Education and Horticulture as a means of therapy. It is now well known that stress, dementia and obesity are also areas that can be tackled being outdoors.

As a result of the lockdown, we have seen an uptrend in ‘Growing your Own’ and in the early stages, seed companies could not keep up with demand. There is no doubt that getting out into the great outdoors has helped many people through this tough time.

Research has shown that gardening can reduce

stress and associated depression in several ways. These include immersion in a natural scene, engagement in a positive and creative activity. People suffering from depression talk of the garden being a refuge, one that helps feelings of calm and relaxation, as well as learning new skills - enjoyment - curiosity and hope.

Gardening also leads you into what do we do with the food grown! Challenging the ability to cook and discovering further skills different tastes - good wholesome foods. Steering us away from processed foods, fast food and excess sugar and fat.

During the lockdown my wife and I were often seen in the kitchen completing batches of cooking to be portioned and frozen. Together with the outdoors comes this new taste of freshness…

For those who are new to growing your own and having found a new interest there are one

or two life lessons to learn:-

1. Start small and build up, otherwise you can be overwhelmed by the care required.

2. Only grow what you like to eat. There is no point in growing say courgettes if you are not going to use them.

3. Whatever you grow, keep a diary or notebook, sow seeds sparingly and make sure you sow for succession…. using the whole of the growing period. You can get three or four crops through the season.

4. Now is the time to start home composting or on the allotment, as the compost will enrich the soil for next year.

5. Planning for next year, starts now and continues through the winter - with overwinter crops of garlic, winter onions and broad beans if you like them!

Next time I will talk about raised beds which are very useful in a small patch.

REDCURRANT & RED ONION RELISH

Well during lockdown everybody started their own vegetable gardens and of course we had a little head start here at the Grove. The Senior Partners John and Ann enjoyed the balmy early summer weather and the fruit and vegetable section have never looked so good. In particular the redcurrants have had a sterling year, so it looks like this redcurrant and red onion relish will be a firm favourite for the rest of the year!

buildings and landmarks across the nation red with light to bring to attention the death of the arts, culture and events now impacting many venues, companies, artists, technicians and creative talent around the UK.

Openwide Coastal Ltd, operators and producers for Cromer Pavilion Theatre and the Cromer Shows joined this campaign on behalf of all the artists and technicians that would have been employed by the venue, but currently left destitute with no support at all from government, and all the suppliers and creative support companies who have seen their business destroyed by the lack of support and hope for the future. The arts, culture and events industries desperately need the government to step up and take responsibility for their actions, support

all those whose lives they have decimated and provide a clear timescale and plan to get us all back into work and let the living get on with life.

Francis Guildea the theatreGeneral Manager said, ’this campaign is an important step in highlighting the issues currently faced. Our own venue in Cromer which houses the last full season End of the Pier Show in the World is in serious jeopardy. Our wonderful venue is not only in need of support for its own survival but is also a vital part of the tourist offer for Cromer and the North Norfolk Coast. As a heritage attraction in its own right we attract over 70,000 visitors over 12 months of the year providing much needed revenue both in and out of season for the many hotels, restaurants, caravan parks and shops for whom a buoyant tourism offer is essential.’

Now, more than ever before, our greatest way of supporting the NHS is by looking after ourselves and our own well-being. If you wish to take responsibility for yourself in achieving your own optimal health and wellness, the guidance and recommendations of the NES Bioenergetics Wellness System couldn't make it easier. NES (Nutri-Energetic Systems) is an innovative approach to health and wellness through the science of 'Information as Medicine'. A unique system encompassing the unification of the Chinese System of Meridians with Quantum Wave Theory, and a 21st century take on Homoeopathy. In fact, it is proving to be a very timely tool as the system was originally designed to be used remotely. A simple software download gives access to non-invasive scanning (with a device similar to a computer mouse), opening a window to your own individual results with graded priority diagrams complete with explanatory help files for ease of understanding. Every scan available for you to explore, at your leisure (along with health and self-development inspirations and information) all within your own personal computer portal account. The scan results show across a series of screens how distortions in the body field are impacting adversely on the efficient and correct delivery of information to the various fields of the body and related cellular matrices. In NES the body field of any living being, as generator of an electromagnetic field (and multiple fields within this field), is considered the master control centre of the instructions received by and resonant in our DNA; the same instructions our autonomic nervous system perceives and responds to beyond our conscious control. With NES Health we are not making any sort of physical/biochemical/medical diagnosis or correction. We are only assessing and correcting body fields, including clearing blockages in the energy meridians, which in turn supports the body in finding its own way back to wellness. The remedies, recommended on the basis of your individual scan, are an updated form of homoeopathic vitalization. These remedies ~ called 'Infoceuticals' ~ provide the encoded, corrective information to the body field, enabling optimisation of vital energy and information transfer. Information that serves to charge the body battery for more efficient metabolic function and activation of innate adaptogenic and healing responses. After all, DNA only manufactures protein (the hardware). What NES is interested in is the ‘software’ that informs DNA. And our DNA is often misinformed by other factions, both the multi-farious vibrations and frequencies of our high-tech environment; and those rooted in our lifetime's thoughts, emotions and beliefs that potentially overcharge the filters of our perceptions in the Now. Through the developments undertaken by NES we can now upgrade the contents, quality and co-ordination of the information field that informs us. This means we can not only make peace with past conditioning and previous suppressions of vitally regenerative processes; but also rise above ongoing challenges and begin to write our own most authentic and resilient story. These are the potentials of the exciting new science of epigenetics approached from the quantum paradigm, showing us how we can move our energy patterning above and beyond the confines of our ancestral inheritances and accumulated susceptibilities, and into new potentials of health and well being. Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Happisburgh Volunteers were called to action Sunday 26 July. By their senior helmsman.

an unpatrolled area away from the RNLI Lifeguards. He saw many people being caught by the wind and struggling to get back to the beach; also children entering the sea by signs warning of the dangers of rip currents and stating not to enter the water.

Happisburgh Lifeboat was stood down by Coastguard before they launched.

The RNLI and Coastguard urge people:

• not to use inflatables on the sea; they are meant for swimming pools

Tim Grimmer, Happisburgh helmsman, was walking along the beach at Sea Palling when he saw a young girl being swept out to sea on an inflatable toy closely followed by others on boards and inflatables. He called 999 immediately and asked for the Coastguard; Sea Palling and Happisburgh Lifeboats were paged and Tim remained on the beach updating the Coastguard of what was happening. The young girl was blown across the bay and out through the reefs. Luckily the people on the boards managed to reach her and, fighting the offshore wind, brought her back into the bay as Sea Palling lifeboat arrived on scene and helped all ashore. The young girl was very distressed by her experience.

Tim Grimmer was amazed at the number of people on inflatables in

• to go where Lifeguards are operating and heed the signs and ask them for advice of the danger in the area

• to always have someone on the beach to keep an eye on you, with means of calling 999 or 112 asking for the Coastguard to get help if needed

• not to try and rescue anyone in difficulty as you may put yourself at risk

There have been a number of these types of incidents in the past few weeks, so far these have ended well, but if people don’t heed the advice of the RNLI and Coastguard it will end in a very sad and upsetting way.

Please use www.rnli.org.uk/safety For advice on all types of water use. Stay safe Stay alive and return home at the end of the day.

RNLI Sheringham

– Shop re-opening and other news

It’s been a long time since we were able to walk down Sheringham High Street and stop for a browse and purchase maritime focused goods from the excellent selection in the RNLI Shop.

But now we can. As from Thursday last, the volunteer staff are there to help you peruse and purchase in a Covid secure environment. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions the Lifeboat House (including the Shop within) will remain closed to the public for the foreseeable future. Sheringham RNLI Lifeboat Day in August has had to be cancelled.

This is a particularly challenging time for the RNLI. Income has decreased drastically so anything you are able to do to keep the RNLI afloat and save lives at sea will be greatly appreciated. The RNLI is not government funded. It is a volunteer service and survives on public financial support. Donations, the RNLI shop and the car park by the Esplanade bring in vital funds. Our mission is simple: to save lives. All our volunteers: boat crew, shore crew, shop helpers, education team, sea safety advisors and many others all work towards that single end. Teamwork is critical. New volunteers bring a wide range of skills and experience and are always welcome. If you feel you can offer your help, do pop into the Lifeboat Shop in the High Street and register your interest.

IS YOUR CONSERVATORY TOO HOT IN THE SUMMER & TOO COLD IN THE WINTER?

RNLI Lifeguards are now on Sheringham’s beaches helping keep safe those enjoying summer and the great British staycation; during and since lock-down the Sheringham Lifeboat has maintained 24/7 readiness. It has been called upon to launch several times. Many of our volunteer crew have also been giving of their time to the NHS and local action groups helping those most in need and those shielding within our community.

In all, RNLI Cromer has made three new appointments within its team of volunteer lifeboat and shore crew.Paul Watling (above, left) has been appointed Coxswain/Mechanic from 15 June 2020.He has been a volunteer for the RNLI for 32 years, starting at Happisburgh as a crew member on the D class, progressing to Helm and mechanic.

Paul joined RNLI Cromer in May 2005 as the station’s mechanic on the Tyne class lifeboat, ‘Ruby and Arthur Reed II’. We then ‘The Royal Shipwright’ which was a Mersey lifeboat. For a year it launched off the beach while the slipway was being reprofiled to take the Tamar lifeboat, ‘Lester’.

‘Likewise we also must not forget the fantastic work of our shop staff and ladies guild and supporters, without whom we would not be able to operate. We are one team and that is what I would like to achieve at Cromer’.

In addition to Paul’s appointment, RNLI Cromer have two new additional Deputy Launch Authorities (DLAs). Steve Guest (above, centre) and Roger Sutton (above, right) already serve as shore crew members, with Roger combining this with his role as Visits Coordinator. They will join the existing DLAs, John Redmond and Mike Wass. Derek Hinds, RNLI Cromer Chairman

This week saw the 66th anniversary of Henry Blogg’s death. He was the most decorated lifeboatman in RNLI history, serving for 53 years on Cromer’s lifeboats. With the assistance of his crew, he saved 873 lives from the North Sea.

NORTH NOR TH NORF NORFOLK OLK REMO REMOVALS VALS A AND ST STORAGE ORAGE LTD LTD : 01692 016 500 501

In 2017 He took up a new position with the RNLI as an assessor trainer (plant and machinery), covering an area from Cleethorpes in the north to Portsmouth in the south, assessing crews on a wide range of vehicles and all aspects of launch and recovery. This also included mechanics for All-weather lifeboats(ALBs).

Paul said: ‘I am really looking forward to the new challenge of leading a great crew both aboard and ashore. My aim is to create a family environment for the station. We often forget that behind any great crew member there is often a great partner who supports them in their volunteering role, so I would like to bring these family members into our lifeboat family.

We are also pleased to welcome on board Steve and Roger to the operations team as DLA's, excellent appointments for our station’.

Cushing’s disease

As pet owners we all understand how important it is to be watching for signs of disease so this week we focus on a particular disease seen in dogs and called Cushing’s disease.

What is Cushing’s disease?

Also called hyperadrenocorticism, Cushing’s disease is caused by an overproduction of cortisol, a naturally occurring steroid hormone. This overproduction is usually due to a benign tumour of either the pituitary gland (a gland found at the base of the brain) or one of the adrenal glands (found in the abdomen, next to each kidney). Although this sounds a little scary, it’s a disease we know a lot about and can control well to give pets a normal life.

What are the signs of Cushing’s disease in dogs?

Often dogs will show excessive thirst and frequent urination, increased appetite and

therefore weight gain. Some owners may notice that their dog starts to get a pot-bellied appearance, hair loss and thin skin. Other symptoms which can be seen are excessive panting, muscle loss or weakness, lethargy and increased frequency of urinary and skin infections.

How is Cushing’s disease diagnosed in dogs?

If your dog is suspected to have Cushing’s syndrome your vet will perform blood tests specific for Cushings disease and known as either an ACTH stimulation test or a low-dose dexamethasone suppression test.

How is Cushing’s disease treated?

Cushing’s disease will progress if left untreated and can increase the risk of your dog developing other, potentially serious, conditions for which treatment can be intensive and costly. These include high blood pressure, diabetes, pancreatitis and increased susceptibility to infection. However, Cushing’s disease can

be successfully managed enabling your dog to return to their normal lifestyle. Often the treatment of choice is a tablet which is given once a day and acts by reducing the production of cortisol by the adrenal glands.

Your vet will advise a blood test shortly after starting the medication and at intervals throughout your pets life to monitor how your dog is responding to treatment and ensure they are receiving the most effective dose.

Bowler and the Health and Safety of the Club and its members is the responsibility of Lin Rodney Crowfoot.

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club has not been active during Lockdown due to the ages of the members. However, with the reduction of restrictions the members are planning to fundraise again in the area. However, the Club will not be collecting for one major cause; instead, they ask for requests from local organisations who need funds towards a special project. The Lions Club does not have vast resources because one of the rules of the Lions organisation is that most, if not all, of the year’s fundraising is distributed at the end of the year. In addition, the membership of the Club is at present only eight people.

We start this new fundraising year in July and carry on to the following June. The Club is examining the possibility of using Card Readers to simplify fundraising and reduce the amount of cash being handled, again, in line with the conditions imposed by the Covid19 virus. The residents of North Norfolk have been very generous in the past, which we greatly appreciate, and we hope that the public will continue to support our fundraising in future.

Although Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club is small we do have an active social side and are always on the lookout for new members.

Fundraising is mostly conducted at local supermarkets and we also take part in the Sheringham and Cromer carnivals, the fundraising day at Mannington Hall in September, where we run Tombolas and do a Pub Dash just before Christmas. Of course, most of these events have been cancelled for 2020 so we do need to try other ways of raising money. If you know of a local project that needs some financial help, but please note, not for day to day running costs, please contact Derick Bowler at d.bowler08@btinternet.com and the Club will consider your proposal.

Body goals - Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic helping you to achieve your ideal body shape

Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted dangers of obesity. Obesity is a major worldwide health issue. It puts us at a higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, some cancers and a large number of other medical problems. Unfortunately most of us struggle to achieve weight loss without any help. Ideally we want to lose inches but preserve muscle mass and skin elasticity.

What happens with ageing? As we age all three elements that determine our body shape are affected. Our metabolism slows down and it takes forever to burn off that dessert! Work and life in general get in the way and our activity levels are reduced. Consumption of alcohol, tobacco, excessive sun exposure and lifestyle factors play a role too. We lose collagen at 1% a year from the age of 18 so skin becomes less elastic and wrinkles and laxity can appear.

So how can we help? We can help you achieve your ideal body shape with the help of our treatments. You have a medical consultation where we devise a bespoke programme to help you reduce your energy balance

so you can lose a realistic amount of weight. Yo-Yo dieting is not very good so lifestyle changes are extremely important for long term results. Hormonal changes make it very difficult for fat to be mobilised from resistant pockets such as around the belly, flanks and hip areas or genetically susceptible areas such as chin and jowls. We have injectable treatments, which can help dissolve these fatty deposits and we can also help with our energy-based devices such as ultrasound, lasers and radiofrequency machines. Skin elasticity and cellulite can also be helped usually with a combination of treatments such as radio frequency. We also have several lasers and injection treatments for collagen stimulation and improving skin texture. Finally in patients near their ideal body weight but with resistant localised areas of fat, liposuction is considered the goldstandard option for body contouring. We carry it out under pure local anaesthesia. It is a walk-in, walk-out procedure with fantastic results. We also offer surgical options such as modified and mini-tummy tucks and arm-lifts also under pure local anaesthesia.

We are uniquely placed to offer all these options to our patients under one roof. This allows us to device a customised treatment programme rather than be limited by only a few choices.

Sir Norman Lamb marks Norfolk Day by challenging the county to Walk 500 Miles for Norfolk’s Young People

Sir Norman Lamb, the former Member of Parliament for North Norfolk, has launched alongside Norfolk Community Foundation a county-wide challenge as part of Norfolk Day for people to get together with friends, colleagues or family to collectively ‘walk 500 miles’ to raise funds throughout the month of August for his Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund.

In taking part in the challenge, people can choose to walk, run, cycle, swim or complete the miles in a way that’s best for them, as well as setting a goal of less miles by themselves if they don’t want to do it as part of a group. The challenge acknowledges the positive impact of physical exercise on our mental health but is also an opportunity to celebrate what Norfolk can achieve when it comes together – as well as exploring parts of the county that people may not know so well.

Whoever raises the most amount of money as part of the challenge will be given the opportunity to meet with Norwich City Footballers, Alexander Tettey and Christoph Zimmermann, who last week were announced as ambassadors of the Sir

Norman Lamb Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund, and receive a certificate to mark their achievement.

Sir Norman, who has set a goal of cycling 100 miles himself, said: “This challenge is an opportunity to not only get active and healthy but to raise vital funds for community-based organisations doing vital work with children and young people in our county. The need for help is greater than ever now in the aftermath of the Covid crisis. Choose whatever distance you want to walk, run or cycle or to try to reach 500 miles together with friends and family, and raise vital funds by asking friends to sponsor you. We would be so grateful.” Sir Norman’s wife, Mary, who he established his Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund with, has set her own target of walking park of the coastal path with a friend.

Those wishing to take part in the challenge will have the option to set up their own JustGiving page to directly raise funds, linking their page to Norfolk Community Foundation’s dedicated Walk 500 Miles

JustGiving campaign, and use the page to

update friends and family on their progress, or alternatively can direct anyone wanting to support their fundraising efforts to Norfolk Community Foundation’s fundraising page, removing the need to have to set anything up themselves. How people can get involved:

All information on how to take part in the challenge, including guidance on setting up a JustGiving page, can be found at www.norfolkfoundation.com/givingphilanthropy/mental-health/walk-500-miles from Monday 27th July.

You can also contribute directly to Sir Norman’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund online at www.norfolkfoundation.com/ giving-philanthropy/mental-health or alternatively send a cheque made payable to Norfolk Community Foundation (referencing the Sir Norman Lamb Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund) to Norfolk Community Foundation, St. James Mill, Whitefriars, Norwich, NR3 1TN.

DUNCAN BAKER MP - July Newsletter

Dear all, The past few months have been a very challenging time. As well as Covid-19, the devastating fire at Budgens in Holt has created problems for those who live and shop in the town. I’ve been working closely with local stakeholders to make sure we support the most vulnerable, and local suppliers who depended on Budgens for much of their business. As a result of campaigning by the Norfolk MPs, Ofgem and National Grid have now been commissioned to look into ways to support the growth of our offshore wind industry without compromising the ecology and beauty of our natural landscape. A report on the available options is expected in October.

The government’s financial support package has been a lifeline to many individuals and businesses, but the focus now moves to how we can support the re-opening of our economy. ‘Eat Out to Help Out’, a VAT reduction for tourism and hospitality businesses, and

nother

incentives for employers to keep their employees on over the next few months are just the start, with more initiatives expected in the autumn. You can find further details at duncanbaker.org.uk.

When elected, one of my pledges was to work on improving mobile coverage and broadband speeds in North Norfolk. I’m pleased that the government has introduced the ‘Universal Service Obligation’ which enables anyone with an internet connection slower than 10Mbps to request an upgrade at no cost to the customer. We are also working on a Shared Rural Network, a UK equivalent of ‘roaming’ which will allow mobile phone users to access the strongest signal regardless of which network they are on. There is more to be done, but this is good progress. Chloe Smith MP and I are working hard on delivering two major upgrades to healthcare: a new Accident & Emergency department at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital; and an

Over the past few months, my office team and I have dealt with thousands of enquiries, both Covid-related and on other issues. If I can help you with any issue, please do contact me on 01692 557140 or at duncan@duncanbaker.org.uk. During July and August I will be touring the whole constituency, visiting as many of our towns and villages as possible, meeting constituents, and learning more about the issues which matter most to you. Details will be available shortly on my website and via social media and local newspapers. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible over the summer.

Urgent Treatment Centre for Cromer Hospital. These plans will have several additional benefits – with local people having less distance to travel to access healthcare; and enabling ambulances to remain ‘closer to home’, thus reducing ambulance response times in North Norfolk. Again, this work is ongoing, but the government is keen to do all it can to see these major projects delivered.

County Councillor News

from County Councillor Sarah Butikofer sarah.butikofer.cllr@norfolk.gov.uk or 07968 897235

When I last wrote in January I could never have imagined what a turn of events was just around the corner, none of us could. The last few months have been by turn challenging and inspiring, and have truly shown us once again how lucky we are to live, here in North Norfolk. I write for this one episode not as a County Councillor but as the Leader of North Norfolk District Council.

Want to know how much your house is worth? The market is buoyant and there are lots of buyers out there. Plus, there’s the added incentive of a stamp duty holiday*.

Firstly my heartfelt condolences go out to all the families and friends of those who have lost their lives to Covid-19, it is truly a dreadful disease that is indiscriminate in those it takes from us.

Whilst remembering those people, we also need to send our hugely grateful thanks to all our residents, local community groups, NHS Staff and key workers who stepped up to the plate and worked around the clock to protect others, and to save lives over these last months.

North Norfolk has thankfully seen a low level of COVID infections 219 cases, meaning 210 cases per 100,000 population and placing us 291st out of 315 local authority areas (1 being high and 315 being low) in England. There will be many contributing factors to this figure including our rurality, low population density, lack of an acute hospital in the District - but equally with one of the oldest population profiles in the country we could have seen very different outcomes as national data suggests vulnerability to COVID increases significantly with age. In this respect I believe the Council has supported our residents, communities and businesses very well over the past 18 weeks and continues to do so in seeking to control and manage the spread of the virus locally through the social distancing measures we have put in place ourselves in our towns, seafront and Broads tourist areas.

Whilst I know the Council does not always get everything right we are committed to doing our very best for our local residents. I could not be prouder of how the team at NNDC have responded to the crisis. Staff have all gone above and beyond for many weeks and especially so at the height of the crisis, designing response systems, delivering new services and helping out on the ground in the community. Our emergency helpline responded to thousands of calls, from those concerned about food supplies and prescription delivery, to those helping with benefits claims and business grants.

Book a valuation and open the door to a new possibility.

Give the coastal team a call…

As we move into the recovery phase we know there is a long road ahead, especially when so much of our local economy is reliant on tourism. We know that many residents remain concerned about the influx of our guests to our area, but the Council remains committed to your protection, and we are doing all we can to help, both tourism businesses and the high street to reopen safely. In the last week we have been able to source special equipment which we are now deploying to ‘fog’ public conveniences and children’s play areas. Our hand sanitisers have now been in place for a couple of weeks together with other measures.

For now I would like to end with a final thanks to everyone for the part they have played in helping to keep us as safe as possible thus far. Please remain vigilant careful and considerate of the concerns of others as we move forwards.

Warning from Trading Standards as rogue roofers scam residents out of £17,000

As lockdown eases Norfolk County Council’s Trading Standards are urging residents to beware of rogue traders who are turning up on doorsteps to scam people out of thousands of pounds.

Last week alone three residents near Norwich lost more than £17,000 to fraudsters who had told their victims that they had ‘seen problems’ with their homes, including cracked and unsafe chimneys.

Garage Door Repairs. New Cables, Springs, Locks. Roller Garage Door Repairs. New Up & Over Garage Doors. New Automatic Garage Doors. 10 Year Warranty on Doors.

The incidents in Hellesdon, Sprowston and Catton saw three men pressuring residents into agreeing to work by claiming that urgent repairs were needed to prevent chimneys falling or collapsing.

After quoting prices of several thousand pounds and completing a small amount of work, claims were then made that more issues had been found, and the price for the job increased dramatically.

At this point the fraudsters said they needed payment in full to buy materials or hire equipment. But once the money was handed over they left the work incomplete and never returned.

Cllr Margaret Dewsbury, Norfolk County Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Partnerships, said: “It is disgusting that as we are coming out of lockdown so too are the unscrupulous fraudsters trying to scam people in our communities. Last week the fraudsters struck near Norwich but they could be moving to other areas of Norfolk so I’m urging people to be on the lookout.

“The simple message is that we should never agree to have work done by somebody who is ‘just passing’ or take their word that the work needs to be done at all.

“Our Norfolk County Council Trading Standards team recommends that we should only deal with reputable companies you have researched and chosen yourself to work on your home.”

In the recent incidents two of the three males involved are described as mid-twenties in age and are believed to be using a white Ford Transit with ladders on the roof.

Current social distancing measures in place & must be observed at all times

Cromer Times August 2020

It’s not your fault... anymore by Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

August is a barren month for the legal writer. It is also the ‘silly season’ when doubtful legal cases receive greater prominence than they deserve in the press. Add to that Covid-19 and there is much less than usual to write about this year. The Law Society Gazette has shrunk in size to smaller than the many parish magazines, with a lot of articles on lawyers’ mental health, working from home and the bleak prospects for the younger generation of lawyers. The rollercoaster of the Coronavirus emotions and mood swings has been labelled the ‘Coronacoaster’, and has affected even the most confident and balanced people.

Lockdown has brought financial and personal pressures, as well as more thinking-time and enforced ‘spending time with the family’. There have been increased levels of domestic violence across the social-spectrum. This in turn has lead to many more divorce enquiries. My matrimonial partner Rob Colwell is very busy.

One very positive development, in keeping with the mood of the times (what the Germans call the ‘zeitgeist’), is the move towards no-fault divorce. Much of my work relates to the intergenerational-dynamics of families, rather than spousal-strife. Although I am not a divorce lawyer, parents’ concerns for their children’s fragile marriages are a main focus when succession-planning.

The “no fault divorce” is to become law after decades of campaigning by lawyers and family justice professionals. So it is very good news that couples will soon be able divorce without having to find fault with one another. The requirement for couples to apportion blame is so firmly established that it can permeate every aspect of a separation, even when things started out amicably. Children are inevitably drawn into the blame game, with cruel long-term effects. Fault-based divorce law is as much of the 19th Century as women being unable to own property. Now, instead of finding blame, one spouse can apply for a divorce by making a statement of ‘irretrievable breakdown’ of marriage.

There will be a new minimum timeframe of six months from the application stage to the granting of a divorce, giving couples time to reflect and even change their minds. If reconciliation is not possible, there will be enough time to agree practical arrangements, most importantly for their children.

This must be so much better for the whole family and will not estrange grandparents from their former son-in-law or daughter-in-law.

At present, couples seeking a divorce in England and Wales must blame the other for the marriage breakdown. None of the grounds are conducive to future family happiness: adultery, unreasonable behaviour or, the rather

Victorian, desertion. Otherwise there must be a minimum of two years separation with consent, or 5 years’ separation, if such consent is withheld.

Now the Bill has received Royal Assent, it has become an Act of Parliament. It is likely to happen in 2021, once changes to systems and procedures have been implemented.

For further information or advice on any other legal matter, contact Hayes + Storr on 01263 825959 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

Lights. Kettle. Action.

The café bar at a popular seaside theatre is taking its cue for a comeback. It is likely to be a while before the lockdown safety curtain is lifted from the Sheringham Little Theatre’s stage.

The café opened on July 14 and is safely serving snacks and drinks – to enable loyal customers to start re-visiting the popular Hub community meeting point. Things will be different, as the theatre strives to revive its arts-flavoured watering hole.

There will be: • A limited menu – with home-made scones and cakes, sausage rolls, hot and cold drinks • Restricted opening hours – 10am to noon, Tuesday to Saturday • Fewer tables, catering for 27 people, to maintain social distancing • Card payment only. No cash.

This year’s Norfolk Open Studios, one of the most successful schemes of its kind in the country, has been cancelled The award-winning event was originally due to take place across May and June but with the lockdown in force organisers decided to postpone the event until the autumn.

Now, the decision has been taken to cancel this year’s Norfolk Open Studios with organisers looking forward to 2021 in order to protect the safety of artists and visitors.

Ros Dixon, Norfolk Open Studios administrator said: “When we cancelled the original dates for Norfolk Open Studios 2020 back in March, we had hoped we might be able to postpone until the autumn.

homes, safely. The scheme is also designed to get visitors exploring the county and we felt putting communities at risk in this way, would not be appropriate right now. As a result we have decided that the most sensible thing to do is to cancel Norfolk Open Studios for this year, and look forward instead to 2021. We were delighted to still be able to celebrate some of our amazing artists by hosting Norfolk Opens Studios 2020 online earlier this month, and we are happy to say this is still available to view on our website.”

Ordinarily, Norfolk Open Studios would see around 400 artists opening their studio doors to the public to exhibit, sell and talk about their work and practice, normally attracting 30,000+ visitors. Internationally renowned artists as well as artists new to the scheme take part each year and for many, it offers the opportunity to join a wider community of artists which helps to bring their work to new and diverse audiences, opening up discussions about their practice. Earlier this month Norfolk Open Studios offered an online version of the scheme with more than 55 artists bringing their studios to life with virtual tours, video demonstrations audio recordings, photos and filmed stories. It is the first time in the scheme’s 26 years that the event has moved from the artists’ studios to an online celebration of Norfolk’s artistic community.

“Unfortunately, it turns out we are still in uncertain times. Despite some of the recent relaxations, it would be extremely difficult for many artists to welcome public to their studios, often in their own

Loneliness does not discriminate, new befriending service in Norfolk

MOTOR SERVICES LIMITED

A new befriending offer has been launched during Loneliness Awareness Week to link people to services that can help combat isolation and loneliness in Norfolk.

01692 405495

Your One-Stop Garage

Norfolk County Council, in partnership with the voluntary sector, community groups and local councils in Norfolk, can now offer direct connections to existing befriending services and to the army of volunteers recruited during the pandemic.

Air Conditioning

People can ask for support with loneliness and isolation by contacting Norfolk County Council directly on: 0344 800 8020.

Re-gassing, Service & Repair

By centralising calls for the befriending service, the County Council’s customer service team can rapidly connect the customer to a volunteer co-ordinator, who will then match an appropriate befriender from the network of volunteers across the county. As well as befriending phone calls, the service hopes to provide socially distanced visits too.

Electronic Diagnosis

Servicing - Tyres - Batteries

So far, volunteers across the county have made regular calls to over 260 people.

Ninety-year-old Maurice Oliver has recently joined the befriending service and said: “I try to keep moving with housework and like to use brain-power making models, otherwise you lose it, but I do still feel lonely and depressed at times. I’ve come to rely on these calls. [My befriender’s] an angel and is genuinely interested in me, not just talking for the sake of it.

Ceri Sumner, a spokesperson for the Norfolk Resilience Forum, said: “We already know the devastating effects that loneliness and social isolation can have on people’s mental and physical health, so we are urging people to reach out and not to feel stigmatised – essentially, it’s okay not to feel okay – we are here to help.

“We must remember that, for a number of vulnerable people in the county, they still need to take more precautionary measures. The befriending service should go some way to reaching those people who don’t have friends and family to make regular calls or visits. Please check on anyone who would benefit from befriending, and share the contact number: 0344 800 8020.

Alan Hopley, Chief Executive of Voluntary Norfolk, said: “Based on the success of our volunteer recruitment over the last few months, we wanted to ensure that this incredible resource would remain sustainable and make a real difference to people’s lives. Going forward, the role of the volunteer is not only integral to the recovery of the current crisis but is also instrumental in providing early help and support for communities longer term.

Little Theatre cinema returns with two blockbusters

Movies are making a comeback to the big screen at Sheringham Little Theatre in August – kicking off with an uplifting feel-good film.

Military Wives will be shown at 7.30pm on Friday August 7th as the auditorium opens its doors for the first time since lockdown.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “Our audiences were booking keenly and looking forward to this movie before lockdown, and it is an ideal storyline, about bringing people together, for the return of our cinema.”

Military Wives, starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan, tells the story of women whose partners are serving soldiers in Afghanistan who formed a choir that becomes a media sensation and global movement.

Online Dating

The next planned film – on Tuesday August 18th - is the powerful First World War blockbuster 1917 which follows two young British soldiers on a perilous journey through enemy lines to deliver a vital message which can save thousands of lives.

Online Dating seems to be the way to meet a man. Hoping you’ll meet someone who fits your romantic plan. First you meet for coffee, to see if you both ‘gel’, So you can make a quick escape, if things aren’t going well! It must be very difficult if one soul thinks it’s Fate, But if it’s not reciprocated - goodbye, second date! The next step, for most people, is to go out for a meal. Watching someone eat their food can make or break a deal! What a dodgy way this is to meet your new soul mate; What if it’s an ‘off day’ and you’re not feeling great? You could blow your only chance of meeting Mr Right, If you’ve got a head cold or you’ve had a rotten night! This could also happen if you meet online or at a dance, So, hold your nerve and go for it, you’ve got to take a chance! Frances Wraight

Equinor begins community consultation for offshore wind farm extensions Equinor has launched a community consultation to seek local views on its plans to extend its existing wind farms off the Norfolk coast. The company currently operates two wind farms from Norfolk, Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm and Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm, and through its employees, supply chain and community funds has been present in the community for close to a decade. Called the Sheringham and Dudgeon Extension Projects (the “Extension Projects”), these new wind farms will be built adjacent to the existing wind farms, bringing the total capacity up to 1.44GW, enough renewable energy to power one and a half million UK homes. Cables from the Extension Projects will come ashore at Weybourne, before being installed in a trench heading south towards a new onshore substation near to the existing National Grid Norwich Main Substation. This first phase of community consultation runs from today (9 July) until 20 August 2020, and in particular feedback is being sought regarding the location of the site for the onshore substation, the route to be taken by the underground

Equinor has published a Statement of Community Consultation (SoCC) which sets out how the company will be engaging with the local Norfolk community to ensure that they can provide comments and feedback on the plans as they develop. To keep the conversation going whilst social distancing remains in place, Equinor has developed a range of options online and via dedicated communications lines to invite community feedback and ensure that all interested parties have access to all the information. These include: • a consultation website www.epanddep.common place.is where interested members of the public areable to provide their comments via an interactive digital engagement platform • a virtual exhibition event.sepanddep.co.uk and interactive online space with more information about the projects and the planning and construction processes • the Projects’ Community Liaison Officer, Nigel BST Height Tide Tompkins, based in 01:51 1.07 m L Norfolk (E-mail: 07:17 4.89 m H nigel@ni4b.co.uk) 14:29 0.71 m L Additionally, over 9,000 19:55 4.86 m H properties within 1km 02:34 0.91 m L of the proposed onshore 07:55 5.10 m H cable corridor search 15:12 0.49 m L area from Weybourne 20:37 4.98 m H to the Norwich Main 03:16 0.81 m L 08:35 5.24 m H substation, south of 15:54 0.36 m L Norwich, have been 21:18 5.02 m H mailed a community 03:56 0.78 m L consultation leaflet 09:16 5.30 m H and feedback form. 16:35 0.36 m L In parallel, the company 22:00 4.97 m H is consulting with 04:37 0.84 m L landowners within the 09:59 5.25 m H indicative survey area. 17:17 0.48 m L “It’s really important to 22:44 4.81 m H us to hear from the 05:19 0.98 m L community at this early 10:46 5.07 m H stage of the project, so 18:00 0.72 m L that we can consider

feedback from the local people as the projects develop”, says Kari Hege Mørk, project manager at Equinor. “It’s a challenging time to engage as we can’t physically meet in person but we hope that the materials we have provided, including our virtual exhibition space, will give people enough information to be able to comment on our onshore plans. We’ve also got lots of channels of communication open if people have further queries, and we really encourage anyone who has an interest in the project to have a look. “One area we’re specifically looking for input on is to help us inform the criteria for the site selection of the onshore substation area, close to the Norwich Main substation, as well as feedback to assist us in refining the detail of the onshore cable route from Weybourne to the substation site.” On completion of this first phase of community consultation, Equinor will compile and publish a report summarising the feedback received and how this is being considered. Both Extension Projects are classed as Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) which means Equinor will apply for a Development Consent Order from the Secretary of State for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy.

A second phase of community consultation will be held in Spring 2021 when the company will be presenting its refined plans, inviting comments to its Preliminary Environmental Report (PEIR) and providing additional information including visualisations of what the Extension Projects will look like onshore and from the coast. Equinor intends to submit the Development Consent Order application by the end of 2021

enjoyed the first one, played non-competitively. The most recent was more competitive for 22 members and was a record breaker. Jane C accumulated a score of 34 shots with zero against! Keith has organised these events for many years and has never seen such a scorecard. Congratulations Jane!

News from the Club House ...

It’s lovely to be able to report on our return to the bowling green at Cromer Marrams Bowls Club. Following the information from the government and Bowls England and extensive consultation among committee members we were able to produce club guidelines to suit members and open the green for singles play on 25th May. A fortnight later we introduced pairs play and we now have 33 members playing regularly and safely. The mats, jacks and pushers have never been so clean!

The work on the green during the winter and spring by our green ‘team’, with professional assistance, has reaped the benefit. It is looking in great ‘nick’ and more importantly playing well, for most members anyway! The committee have recently given the go ahead for more work in the autumn/winter and an addition to the mowing machine to assist the cutting.

As restrictions relaxed, we have been able to hold our usual spoon drives. 20 members

The clubhouse received an outside ‘spruce up’ in the spring and the men’s toilet was refurbished in May. There are plans to renew more of the chairs in the clubhouse, but this is on hold until we are able to actually access the building under normal conditions!

Friday evening at the club returned with the opening of the bar. Waitress service only, of course, to members seated outside (weather permitting). The initial hitch was the timing of the sprinklers on the green, soaking anyone near the vicinity of the green edge!

Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Club is preparing for the holiday season and an anticipated huge demand for outdoor socially distanced sports like tennis.

capacity delivering 30 lessons a week. The eight new coaches will more than triple that capacity.

The Club has teamed up with RPT, the Register of Tennis Professionals, the global leader in training coaches, to train up eight new coaches for the Club on a fast track intensive programme, run by RPT Director, Adrian Rattenbury.

The new coaches will receive the RPT Mark of a Pro Qualification qualifying them to give individual lessons and then over the summer will train for the higher LTA Level 3 qualification to be awarded in early September.

Demand for tennis coaching this summer The 8 new coaches will work under Head Coach Andy Margarson who is already at full

working from home who would normally live and work in London looking for outdoor sport in the evenings and at weekends. Once the schools break up, we also expect a deluge of families looking for activities for their children over the summer - and learning tennis outside in the fresh air could be perfect after months indoors doing home schooling.” The Club believes that this battery of eight new tennis

We can only open, at present, to play as a ‘private’ club so the playing subscription for this year will remain at £30. We are open 7 days a week from 10am to 7pm and with the green planned to be open for play until 27th September there are still lots of opportunities to make the subscription fee a bargain this year. If you are ‘sporty’ and missing the involvement and physical activity come along and give us a try. More details from Neil on 01263 513901.

coaches will also add a considerable dimension to Cromer’s offering to its local community – a reason to stay in Cromer over the summer; and it will also be a considerable draw to couples and families from London and from other parts of the country, thinking of taking a holiday in Norfolk.

Quality of Coaches Both RPT and the Club are thrilled with the quality of trainee coaches on the course. It includes a player on the international circuit (Marcus Meadows), a Norfolk country player (Tom Fisher), two players in the Norfolk Junior Squad (Jack Seton and Sian Stoppani), three LTA Level 1 coaches who have been apprenticed to the Club over the last year (Jonny Lawrence, Alex Meyrick, Jim Pallister) and club member, gymnast and PE teacher Lisa Stickells, daughter of Icarus Hines, and currently attached to Cromer Academy. The Club is delighted too that for the first time it will have two female coaches with the top coaching qualification – and is writing to Judy Murray (mother of Andy Murray), who has long campaigned for more quality female coaches.
