Cromer & Sheringham Probus Club
On 1 November, after an excellent lunch at The Links Hotel, club member Paul Newman spoke to us about climate change He had been a government advisor on sustainable development for many years He began by quoting António Guterres, Secretary General of the UN, who has said “Climate change is the most important item in the world’s in tray”
Here are just a few points from Paul’s very detailed talk: (a) The ice of Antarctica reflects heat back into space but in the Arctic regions, free water, trapped between continents, absorbs heat and so heating is greater there than elsewhere (b) Cold fresh water running off areas of permafrost, ice shelves etc , creates less salinity, which slows down the cold current travelling south down the Eastern seaboard of North America and has a slowing effect on the Gulf Stream c) Humans do have an effect on the planet: a composite photo of the earth from space showed an enormous belt of light across the densely populated parts of the planet; this and the majority of the energy we use is produced from the stored up ‘ancient sunlight’ we extract when we burn fossil fuels (d) The problem with plastics is that they retain energy and are hard to break down in fact they require a great deal more energy in order to achieve this! (e) Is there climate change? What has caused current disruption? Paul left us to draw our own conclusions, but he suggested that we need to make a greater effort to work within the planet’s own cycle of natural energy
On 10 January Jacqui Palmer will talk to us about the RNLI and on 7 February Peter Stibbons will speak on Aspects of Cromer ’s History More information about the club can be seen on our website at www candsprobus club or you can call Dave Vickery on 01263 824306

A Note from the edi
Can you believe that Christmas is almost here yet another year has flown by?
There are fairy lights and seasonal music to g the mood, and yet things feel very different thi time Who would have thought so many would in need of warm spaces and food banks? We are all pulling our belts in and scaling back the celebrations this year in anticipation of that fuel bill which will inevitably land on the mat But that doesn’t mean Christmas can’t still be special Often it is the simple things which turn out to be the most memorable or pleasing and what price can be put on sharing time with family and friends?
So, if Christmas is more frugal this year so be it, a good time can still be had by all Whilst you are at it, remember those who are struggling or lonely and do what you can to make Christmas a little happier for them too
A very Merry Christmas to all our readers and advertisers Jo Editor

HUGS Continue to Help
On Monday 14th November
over 40 of Sheringham's Hosts and their Ukrainian guests joined together for a meal with food from both the UK and Ukraine There was much laughter and the opportunity to chat with new found friends as part of HUGS (Hosting Ukrainians Group Support) latest event The Lighthouse Community Church kindly made the Lighthouse available as part of their continued support to the Ukrainian community as part of HUGS
Cllr Liz Withington feels that these events are important “as it connects our Ukrainian guests who can then support each other It is important to have that support as no matter how hard we try we cannot truly understand the horrors they have been through and the struggles they are facing to rebuild their lives whilst watching their
loved ones from afar defending their country from Russia’s attack. “
Many of Sheringham’s Ukrainian guests have now found work and in fact several were not able to attend as they were working. They have found work in leisure, retail, hospitality and cleaning Some have also set up their own business as well
Weekly English lessons arranged by HUGS volunteers are going well Chris and Maddie McMahon are leading on this as experienced Language School managers Other volunteers from the community such as Hazel are also supporting the group Volunteer Hazel said that “she has never worked with such a motivated group who are so keen to learn “There is such enthusiasm in the group for learning English that a second group will be starting ”
A Strange Day by David Abbott
It turned out to be a day unlike any other as Old Bill Ogden left the house early, determined to work up an appetite for lunch It was bright, crisp and sunny But somehow it didn’t feel right
As he stopped at the gate pondering why, he realised it was eerily quiet He had no feeling of cold although it was a typical winter ’s day And why was the whole scene somehow odd? Everything was a bit blurry and slightly unreal But he noticed with satisfaction the long standing arthritis in his neck and shoulder wasn’t giving him gip And his piles weren’t aggravating either After all this has to be a good day he thought as he drifted down the road Nearing the church, he saw the Vicar chatting to Vera, both of whom he knew well. Passing he bade them “good morning” But was taken aback as neither took the slightest bit of notice of him However, Vera’s dog went
The kids had a good time with Lighthouse Youth Club games and are settling well at school They all enjoyed having the opportunity to play with children chatting in their own language
Sheringham’s host families also enjoyed the opportunity to chat and share experiences Phil Bailey a host, along with his wife Alison, said that HUGS events are “a great opportunity for hosts to share ideas about the best ways to support each other. It is lovely to see how well our guests have adapted to life here, both making friends and working locally”
Liz Withington
cross eyed and got agitated Ever so slowly the landscape was getting more misty and weird He blinked Down the road ran Mary, hair of gold and lips like cherries with Tom Jones hot pursuit “What the hell is going on?” he thought Looking up he saw an owl sitting in a tree with a policeman’s helmet on his head It winked at him “I must be going mad ” “I need a drink" he muttered to himself “The pub will be open so at least I can get a pint and the locals are always happy to have a chat and put the world to rights ”
Having got there he found it closed There was a sign on the door “Shut for the day as a mark of respect for our friend Old Bill Ogden RIP” Turning he saw an odd looking fella with a long beard and carrying a scythe over his shoulder. “Sorry mate for messing up your day,” said the stranger. “The Boss sends his apologies and hopes you won’t be too cross ”

Secret Re-naming of Mundesley
Villagers are asking if they have a real life Vicar of Dibley situation where the dysfunctional council’s fictitious leader, David Horton, made important decisions without any consultation with others.
The change of Mundesley to Mundesley On Sea started with the Parish Council grandly referring to themselves with the On Sea extension The village logo changed and gradually the new name was transferred to written documents and public notices All without anything showing in the legal minutes. The crunch came for many when the new name was physically carved in stone on the memorial set up to commemorate the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
Hush hush dealings seem to be going on where members of the council are making huge decisions, yet nothing is being recorded in the minutes or official paperwork Could it be a case of a few arrogant people thinking that they are above the rest of the population that they serve? Mr Duncan Baker, MP for North Norfolk asked in an email, “As an idea, why don’t you start a survey in the village?”
Yet this secret and sly name change is being made with no consultation of villagers and without any official decision Council representatives are just changing the name of this old English village on someone’s personal whim
Nigel Holmes, a local resident for nearly 40 years, said, “I have tried to get to the bottom of this name change by having a question asked at a council meeting But my approach is being blocked at every turn No one seems to want to answer, which makes me wonder if someone will be embarrassed or red faced if this comes to light in public ”
The spelling of Mundesley can be traced right back to the time of the Norman Conquest in 1086 Yet quietly and clandestinely the Parish Councillors appear to be taking it on themselves to re name the village without public consultation The Mundesley On Sea extension was only ever used as the name of the former railway station, which opened in the
village in 1898, linking the city of Norwich with Cromer However, the regular name of Mundesley is what shows on every map, every atlas, and every satellite navigation system throughout the world.
County councillor Ed Maxfield is suggesting that the name change “is something I feel is best decided by the village ” However, the parish council seems to feel they are above this advice
Wendy Fredricks, who is the local representative on the district council said “Looking back in the Doomsday book, the original name of Mundesley; ‘Muleslai’ doesn’t include On Sea Perhaps it would be good to ask our fellow residents what name they would like to choose for our amazing village?”
There have been many dictators in history, and most have eventually been outed, but the Mundesley Parish Council are not answering questions as to who is making these back room decisions and why the name change is happening without going through any official proceedings Other unrecorded decisions have been made in the past and the council have been forced to backtrack by a higher body Is this the tip of an iceberg where other decisions are being made secretly outside the council meetings?
The historic village of Mundesley is outstanding in many ways Overlooked by a stunning and fully restored windmill (Paston Mill), plus the remains of an overshot waterwheel are still visible in its attractive conservation area
The village boasts a sandy Blue Flag beach which won “2022 beach of the year” in a local poll
“It has been said that the name change might be an attempt to gain the village more popularity as was recently tried by Lancing in Sussex changing to Lancing On Sea, which was then rejected by the public and returned to its original,” suggested Mr Holmes. “Yet Mundesley is already so busy during the summer months that even the overflow car park reaches its maximum capacity Will the Parish Council put this name change to public consultation or are they so arrogant that they feel they know best?”
If the name is changed, will the villagers have a new postal address? Will all the maps have to be changed? Will your sat nav be unable to find the route? Will the parish council offer the villagers they represent a say in any re naming of their village? Or do some Mundesley Parish councillors have an arrogance problem and feel they can make these monumental decisions without debate through the proper channels?

Langham Dome Museum The End of Another Season!
Hello again!
I can’t believe how quickly this season has passed By the time you read this, our Spitfire will probably have been put to bed once again for the cold winter months As locals, you will know how very bleak it can be at the old RAF Langham site If the strong winds didn’t damage the plane, the weight of any build up of heavy snow and ice on the wings certainly would
After three years, our ‘Team’, are becoming
very adept at the erecting and dismantling of the Spitfire If you would like to see the operation, just go to our website where you will see a lovely video
Saturday 1st October was the date for our Grand Draw Day at Langham Dome
There was a beautiful array of vehicles from the Norfolk Military Vehicle Group, with re enactors providing Dancing, Vintage cars, 1940s Policemen, Air Raid Wardens and a Land Girl playing the
Spoons, who all gave a wonderful sense of fun to the day
There was a total of £950 to give away in Raffle Prizes with a whopping £500 as first prize! We were honoured to have General, Lord Richard Dannatt, (former Head of The British Army) and his delightful wife, Phillipa, Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk, (who represents His Majesty in Norfolk) on board, to draw the winning tickets for us On their arrival they were greeted by the strains of “The British Grenadiers” from our 1940s musicians on the day, “TimeScape”!
The first prize winner completely bowled us over by returning her £500 win back to the Dome as a donation to our charity Everyone had a great time on the day and a good sum was raised to help us to maintain this wonderfully intriguing museum for future generations
A big “Thank You” to all our fantastic Volunteers, Norfolk Military Vehicle Group, TimeScape Singers and Re Enactors, who all gave their time freely and most generously.
The Winners of the raffle were
1st Prize Ticket no 1685 Carol Wood from Reading
2nd Prize Ticket no. 0574. David Marris from Blakeney
3rd Prize Ticket no 1421 Power from Leicester

New Prostate Biopsy Service Starts at Cromer
State of the art equipment is being used at the North Norfolk Macmillan Centre to enable prostate biopsies to take place for the first time at Cromer. The start of the new service follows fundraising support from Cromer Community and Hospital Friends who have helped to buy new equipment for the centre
A prostate biopsy usually takes place to confirm or rule out cancer after a patient has had high or rising prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test results and an MRI scan Mr Utsav Reddy, Consultant Urological Surgeon, said the urology team would be carrying out MRI fusion guided prostate biopsies at the North Norfolk Macmillan Centre once a week
“The technology is slightly different to that at NNUH and will be a new service for the patients of Cromer and the wider area This ultrasound machine enables us to undertake biopsies under local anaesthetic and we can overlay the MRI image on the real time ultrasound scan to give a more precise biopsy for some men This would not have been feasible without the support of the Cromer Community and Hospital Friends as well as colleagues in Urology, Radiology, Pathology and Cromer Hospital Thank you to all involved in improving the care of men in Norfolk. The aim of the service is to take men through the whole diagnostic pathway in a matter of weeks or sooner, from GP referral to MRI scan and biopsy, which can all take place at Cromer ”
The North Norfolk Macmillan Centre, which opened in September last year, provides chemotherapy treatment, space for outpatient appointments and minor surgery, plus a Macmillan information and support centre, helping people to navigate the practical, emotional
and financial challenges that can arise following a cancer diagnosis
The £4 85million cancer centre was funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and the Norfolk & Norwich Hospitals Charity and received £665,000 to fund equipment, thanks to the Cromer Community and Hospital Friends
It is not always the case that prostate cancer is associated with bothersome urinary symptoms
If you wish to obtain further information about the PSA blood test, visit www.prostatecanceruk.org or speak to your GP

Light Treatments
The light that treats all skin care needs
We have a choice of 27 different laser and light devices and combination packages are available Age, genetics, lifestyle factors and exposure to sun and elements age our skin resulting in broken veins, pigmentation, wrinkles and sagging Winter months are the best time to rejuvenate our skin and reverse some of the skin damage New technology can now treat unsightly leg veins, facial redness, facial
veins, acne and scarring, enlarged pores, sallow complexion, fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation 75% of population between 35 and 65 have some kind of treatable pigment problem Intense Pulse Light ( IPL™) and our lasers use controlled flashes of light to resolve these imperfections with no downtime.
Facial redness and spider veins are a common cosmetic and medical complaint These are particularly common in rosacea sufferers Numerous treatments are available and these produce variable results but laser and light based treatments are the gold standard treatment options Recently intense pulsed light devices have gained popularity Unlike lasers, IPL devices produce a broadband light and effectively target a number of cosmetic concerns such as brown/ black pigmentation, red and blue vessels, enlarged pores and fine skin lines simultaneously Patients see gradual but very noticeable improvements with complexion blending and brightening, achieving photo rejuvenation of the skin
We have a number of anti ageing treatments available today These include anti ageing supplements, vitamins, lotions, potions and hormones What is striking is that none of this reverse skins ageing and prevent skin ageing to the extent that IPL and lasers does. We now have the technology and considerable experience of using this technology effectively to repair the appearance of damaged skin, delay and help prevent signs of skin ageing and also possibly reduce the risk of skin problems in the treated skin It works very well on the face, neck, chest, and arms and anywhere on the body visit www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or phone us on 01603 736487 to book an appointment.
www rosevillapublications co uk Cromer Times December 2022 14
In a bid to reduce carbon emissions in England and Wales, the Government have introduced regulations to improve the energy efficiency ratings of all privately rented homes to C or above by 2030
The energy efficiency of a property is determined by the energy performance certificate, which establishes a rating based on the performance potential and services of that property The energy performance certificate also includes a recommendation report which sets out the ways a property can be made more efficient for energy purposes, and these
measures are a statutory requirement landlords must comply with
On 1 April 2018, the Government imposed restrictions on all new tenancies being offered where the energy efficiency rating of the property was F or G, and on 1 April 2020 this was extended to all tenancies
To reach the target of all privately rented homes having an energy efficiency rating of C or above by 2030, the Government have proposed a phased trajectory, so that all new tenancies should have a rating of C or above by 2025 and all existing tenancies should have a rating of C or above by 2028
the Cost Cap and exemptions The Government have created a cost cap, which means that landlords are not expected to spend any more than £3,500 00 (including VAT) in improving a property’s rating to E or above
Lights Train Set to Shine
The North Norfolk Railway’s popular illuminated train, the Norfolk Lights Express, is now running The immersive experience combines the tradition and romance of an old time steam train with state of the art GPS controlled lighting and audio technology to create an impressive spectacle for the whole family
Norfolk Lights Express trains run from Sheringham on most evenings in December Lights mounted to the outside of the train illuminate the passing countryside to create an enchanting and constantly changing vista for passengers while 10 additional illuminated dioramas, at selected points along the lineside, add to the spectacle and help tell an intriguing story, brought to life by on board narration and music
To assist with carrying out improvements, landlords can apply for funding from third parties such as Energy Company Obligation, local authority grants and Green Deal finance If third party funding only partially covers the costs or cannot be obtained at all, landlords will be required to contribute towards or fund the cost of improvements themselves.
Any energy efficiency improvements made after 1 October 2017 may be included within the cost cap and if a rating of E or above cannot be achieved once the cost cap has been met, then various exemptions are available to landlords, including:
1 The ‘all relevant improvements made’ exemption
2 The ‘high cost’ exemption
3 The all insulation exemption
4 The third party consent exemption
5 The property devaluation exemption
6 The temporary exemption
Landlords must register the exemption, on a self certification basis, before it can be relied upon
Improving the energy efficiency of large, older buildings is likely to be incredibly costly and it is therefore essential that landlords are aware of the funding options available to them and the exemptions that may be applied for, especially where they have a portfolio of buy to let properties
Penalties If local authorities suspect that landlords are not complying with the regulations, or have misleadingly registered an exemption, they may serve a compliance notice requesting further information, to determine whether a breach has occurred and if established, enforce a financial penalty, of up to £5,000 00
How we can help The measures brought in by the Government also apply on the sale and building of new homes and the purchase of buy to let properties and it is therefore essential that landowners understand the implications and comply with the regulations The above is subject to review and we recommend taking advice

Commercial Manager, Graham Hukins, said “Since it debuted in 2019, the Norfolk Lights Express has become a firm festive favourite and this year we have reworked the on board story and added additional lineside displays to make the show better than ever ”
He added, “We have also included a bar car in the train, so passengers enjoy a drink during the interval at Holt The trains are proving as popular as ever and although two thirds of the tickets have sold already, there are spaces available on most days ”
Advance booking is essential for the illuminated train; tickets include reserved seats and are priced from £20 00 Full details including dates, times and availability can be found at www.nnrailway.co.uk

Merry Christmas From Toll Barn Vets!
Christmas is fun for all the family, and that definitely includes all our pets! However, Christmas is often a busy time for our 24/7 on site emergency service as there are plenty of hidden dangers lurking during the festivities which we should all be aware of to help keep our pets safe
Christmas Cake, Christmas Pudding, Mince Pies and Fruit Bowls all contain raisins, sultanas or grapes These should never be fed to pets as they can cause kidney damage and in severe cases kidney failure They can also contain alcohol which can cause signs of intoxication as well as dangerous drops in blood sugar levels, blood pressure and body temperature. Not all dogs will be affected but there is no way of knowing which animals will suffer from toxicity so they are best completely avoided Macadamia nuts can also be toxic causing neurological signs such as weakness, depression, tremors and vomiting within 12 hours of being eaten Onions and garlic can also be harmful (even when cooked) with signs such as vomiting and diarrhoea and potentially destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia) Many Christmas dinners include sage and onion stuffing or onion based gravy so it is best to avoid giving these “left overs” to pets
Chocolate decorations are frequently used on trees and in stockings. Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine (similar to caffeine) which is toxic to dogs The amount of theobromine varies with the type of chocolate (dark chocolate contains the highest levels) Depending on the amount and type of chocolate eaten signs range from vomiting and diarrhoea to wobbliness, seizures and changes in heart rhythm (arrhythmias) If your pet eats chocolate it is important to be able to tell your vet how much and what type of chocolate has been eaten as this will help us calculate whether
a toxic dose has been reached
Some foods such as sugar free gum and diabetic biscuits contain xylitol Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar which is often used as a sweetener in low carbohydrate and diabetic products When pets eat xylitol their blood sugar level can drop rapidly causing lethargy and weakness and in severe cases, seizures Xylitol can also cause liver failure in some dogs The signs of this can take several days to develop We would advise urgent veterinary attention for any pet who is suspected to have eaten products containing xylitol. Pets, especially dogs, have an exceptional sense of smell This means they will often hunt out bones, foil or string with meat juices from the rubbish bin or counter tops. These bones are often brittle and splinter easily which can cause blockages or tears within the oesophagus and intestine whilst foil or string can cause obstructions within the stomach and intestine
Many of these (and other) foods also contain high levels of fat. This can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and more seriously increases the risk of pancreatitis
There are also several household dangers which are more common at Christmas. Tinsel and tree ornaments are particularly attractive playthings to cats and puppies If eaten these will often cause blockages and twists within the intestines of your pet requiring immediate surgery to remove the material Christmas ornaments will also often yed with by pets This can cause choking, cuts within the mouth and damage to the intestines if eaten. Christmas trees themselves are also potentially toxic with pine needles causing irritation of the mouth (which may show as excessive drooling), vomiting, diarrhoea and weakness Naughty puppies and kittens have also been known to injure themselves climbing Christmas trees or knocking them over so it is always advisable to have a barrier to prevent access to the tree, as well as supervision!
Candles and fairy lights are always appealing to curious pets but can result in electrocution or burns Make electric lights and candles are always placed out o reach of naughty paws!
Heated oils create pleasant aromas around the hou but can cause burns to the tongue and mouth if licked so make sure they are placed away from inquisitive animals
Festive bouquets often include lilies, but ingestion of the plant or plant pollen can cause kidney failure in cats If your cat comes into contact with Lilies and the pollen sticks to their fur immediately place a buster collar or t shirt on the cat to prevent them licking and ingesting more pollen and contact your vet for advice Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias are also toxic causing vomiting, diarrhoea and depression Mistletoe has been known to cause collapse, changes in heart rate and erratic behaviour following ingestion
Poinsettia sap has irritant properties which can cause blistering of the mouth and stomach when eaten. We would recommend all plants are kept well out of reach of inquisitive pets!
Most of these potential dangers are treatable if caught early enough so if you have any concerns about your pet during this festive period our 24/7 on site emergency service is available for our clients throughout Christmas and New Year on our normal surgery phone number (01692 407126)
We wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas!

A New Book on Weddings & Marriage
by Local Celebrant & Author
This 'unique and very valuable book' (book review) has been written by local celebrant and first time author Natasha Hood She might be better known locally for the uplifting and welcoming community singing groups she offers across the county, but now she has turned her hand to writing as well Born of almost two decades experience as an interfaith minister and life celebrant, Natasha recently published ‘Your Wedding and Beyond; Ideas to make your Heart Sing’, to empower couples to think outside of the box and create a personally meaningful wedding and marriage
Natasha grew up near Sheringham on an organic small holding, in a multi racial family After years in Scotland, she 'unexpectedly returned full circle and is currently happily settled back where she grew up' in beautiful North Norfolk She is the Musical Director of 'Sing Your Heart Out' (www syho org), a Norfolk charity offering singing for well being. In 2005, she conducted the first ever legal interfaith wedding in the UK
Hailed as ‘the Engagement Gift of the Year!’, Hood’s book is a thoughtful, practical guide inspired by the wealth of wisdom and diversity from across the world on love, weddings and marriage While it is most obviously aimed at couples wanting a bespoke wedding ceremony, this book offers a fascinating read for anyone interested in folklore, history, faith traditions, customs, and the power and purpose of intimate partnership

The most wonderful time of the year can be a bit of a tyranny, with endless adverts trying to convince us that if we are not going mad with endless buying and cooking then we are failing in some way March to your own tune this Christmas, by enjoying the season’s festive meal however you want to do it We are all feeling the pinch in our pockets this year, but let’s not forget that the first Christmas was very simple indeed! The special thing about this occasion is not killing yourself trying to produce the perfect meal, but rather spending special time with the people that you share it with Take shortcuts, make full use of the special offers available at all the supermarkets, and go ahead and cook whatever you want for your festive meal
Vegetables are all on special offer in December, so really the only expensive thing about this meal is the meat, and I guarantee you that even that will be on offer as supermarkets vie for our business If you’re vegetarian or vegan, use the recipe below which is delicious and full of good things, and looks like a really impressive centrepiece to your feast Tables can be beautifully decorated on the day with holly and ivy from the garden, and a few simple candles and baubles borrowed from the tree to cheer it up Christmas crackers don’t have to cost the earth, and you can add extras into the cheaper ones such as chocolates and personal messages for your guests Make some festive mini sausage rolls for your guests when they first arrive, by adding in dried sage, fried leeks and chopped dried cranberries to your sausage meat, and rolling in your own homemade pastry, which is so cheap and easy to make (see extra recipe below) Make your own mince pies for teatime too with the same pastry, adding in a few drops of your favourite tipple to the mincemeat to make it special Plan some simple games for the afternoon or go for a walk to ease off the dinner We will be at the Venue again for Christmas Day this year, so if you’re on your own or want a
change, book in to join us Whatever you do, do it your own way, relax and enjoy the day
A very Merry Christmas and I look forward to bringing you some more recipes in the New Year!
Mushroom and Lentil Wellington
1 large white onion, finely chopped
2 sticks celery, finely chopped
1 leek, finely chopped
1 large carrot, diced
¼ celeriac, peeled and diced
6 large flat mushrooms, roughly chopped into small pieces
1/2 fennel bulb, finely chopped
Sun dried tomatoes in oil
2 fat garlic cloves
2 Tsp Dried sage
Tsp smoked paprika
Splash tamari
Heaped Tsp Miso paste, mixed with a little warm water
1 tin brown or green lentils, drained
½ pack of chestnuts, chopped
Large handful dried cranberries
2 tblsp oatmeal
2 packs ready rolled puff pastry
Using some oil from the sundried tomato jar, gently fry the onion, celery, leek, carrot, and celeriac until pale and soft, being careful not to burn them, and adding in the mushrooms after 5 minutes Add in sage, paprika, the fennel, 4 or 5 sun dried tomatoes chopped finely and the garlic and fry for a further 5 minutes Give the pan a splash of tamari and the miso and stir well Taste and season Tip in the lentils, chopped chestnuts and cranberries, and lastly the oatmeal and stir well to combine Set aside to completely cool Once ready to assemble and cook, unroll one sheet of the pastry, using its’ greaseproof wrapper to line the flat baking tray Carefully place the mixture into the middle of the pastry making sure it is firmly packed together and moisten all sides of the pastry with water Place the second pastry over the top of the first to encase the mixture, and flatten all round to seal it all in, trimming any excess and pressing down firmly If you have any offcuts of pastry, cut out some star or holly shapes to decorate the top, sticking them down with a little water. Prick the top with a knife 3 times to allow air to escape, and brush with a little milk Place into a preheated oven on 180ᵒ for approx 30 to 45 mins or until the pastry is golden and cooked through Serve immediately with all the usual Christmas side dishes
Fabulous Festive sausage rolls
First make the filling; gently fry off some finely chopped leek or onion in a little oil and set aside to cool. Mix some dried sage, salt and pepper and your leeks into a pack of sausage meat, and then fold in some dried chopped cranberries Dust your hands with a little flour and roll the sausage meat into long sausage shapes and set aside For the Pastry: 8 oz Self Raising Flour 4 oz Butter/marg (I use Clover) A pinch of salt 4 tblsp very cold water to mix
Chop your butter into the flour and salt, and then using your hands rub in lightly until the mix looks like fine breadcrumbs Add in the cold water and bring together with a knife into a lump of dough DO NOT OVER HANDLE! Turn over a couple of times lightly to bring it together into a smooth ball, and then dust your surface with flour and roll out into a long rectangle Place your sausage meat into the middle of the pastry and lightly wet one long side. Roll the pastry over the meat and seal, slicing off any excess, and use a fork to press lightly into the sealed edge to decorate Slice into small rolls, and place onto a baking sheet, brushing the tops with a little egg and milk Pop into a preheated oven on 180 ᵒfor 15 to 20 mins, or until pastry is golden and meat is cooked through Can be made ahead and frozen Use the same pastry recipe to roll out and make mince pies, using a star cutter for the tops, which can also be frozen

Recipe
It’s December already and Christmas is just around the corner Those of you who are well organized have probably made your Christmas cake and puddings weeks ago, but for the rest of us who are not so efficient it is useful to have a few last minute recipes up our sleeves to plug the gaps A very good recipe if you have not yet made your Christmas cake is Delia Smith’s last minute mincemeat Christmas cake (recipe available online), it is nice and moist and doesn’t need maturing and feed ing
My recipe this month does away with the fiddly business of making mince pies if you are short on time, but still gives you the festive flavours and something to offer guests with a cup of tea Do splash out on good quality mincemeat as the basic ones tend to be too runny
The Man
“I am the evening star”, said the Man, “I am the lonely road” “But I will guide you safely, And I will share your load”.
“Follow me, follow me, follow me”
“I am the frozen waste”, said the Man, “I am the lofty peak”, “I am the gentle breeze on your face, And I am the friend you seek”
“Follow me, follow me, follow me”
“I am the restless sea”, said the Man, “I am the sand on the shore” “I am the peaceful valley, And I am the open door”
“Follow me, follow me, follow me”
“I am the silvery moon”, said the Man, “I am the darkest night”, “I am the wind that sings in the trees, And I am the way and the light”
“Follow me, follow me, follow me”
Mincemeat and Almond Traybake
You will need a traybake tin (deep sided baking sheet) about 12” x 8” lined with baking parchment so that it overlaps the sides
ingredients
320g plain flour
200g cubed butter
100g ground almonds
100g caster sugar
1 jar of luxury mincemeat (about 400g) 120g flaked almonds
Method
Preheat the oven to 190C/170C fan/ Gas 5.
Put all the dry ingredients into a food processor and blitz until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs, alternatively rub the butter in
by hand
Tip ¾ of this mixture into your prepared tin and compact it firmly with the back of a spoon. Spoon the mincemeat in an even layer over the crumb mixture
Add half the flaked almonds to the rest of the crumb mix and spread over the mincemeat layer (like a crumble topping), press it lightly down and scatter the remaining flaked almonds over the top. Bake in the middle of the oven for about 40 minutes or until golden brown (Do keep an eye on the almonds as they can burn very easily)
Remove from the oven when done and cool in the tin, when cold lift out on the paper and cut into slices, sift with icing sugar. These slices keep well for a few days in an airtight tin and can be served plain or with a dollop of cream or brandy butter

No-fault divorce explained
by Rob Colwell, Director and Head of Family Services, Hayes + Storr
It is now over seven months since the long awaited new law for “no fault” divorce came into force on 6th April 2022 The ‘blame game’ has finally ended and lengthy separation periods cut completely
blame is no longer required Under the new legislation, couples now divorce without having to cite blame Previous grounds for divorce including unreasonable behaviour, adultery or separation periods have all gone In the past, adultery could be used as a reason for divorce, however, under the new law, even if adultery has been committed, it no longer has a place in divorce proceedings
This does not change how hurtful adultery can be and some clients are still finding this new approach difficult to accept If one spouse has caused the breakdown of the marriage due to their adultery, why should they ‘get away with it?’ However, there is now only one ground for divorce and that is: the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage, hence the new term ‘no fault’.
If one, or both parties believe the marriage has come to an end, they are now simply asked to provide either a sole or joint statement to apply for a divorce order However, joint divorce applications remain relatively rare. You can no longer defend a divorce
It is now no longer possible to contest the decision of a spouse to divorce Parties are encouraged to look to the future new terminology
The old term Decree Nisi had been used by the court to mark the first stage of divorce after the acknowledgement of papers by the spouse and after the application had been granted by the court Under the new process, this stage of the process is known as a Conditional Order
Similarly Decree Absolute, which marks the final stage of divorce, confirming that the marriage has officially come to an end, is now known as a Final Order This follows the current terms used for ending civil partnerships
there is a minimum wait period for the Final
order
A minimum period of 20 weeks between the initial application and the Conditional Order is now in place, with a further six weeks between the Conditional and the Final Order Frustrating to many clients, that means that even a straightforward divorce is taking at least six months to complete All divorces are now applied for online
is there a change to the court fee?
The court fee remains £593 00 It should be
noted that a fee remission may be relevant to some couples, and this may help them decide who makes the application. A code can be obtained online, if in receipt of for example Universal Credit
How will the new law affect the division of finances?
The financial side of divorce has not changed Divorce and finances are separate but run parallel through the court system.
Clients are strongly advised to seek expert legal advice to resolve any financial disputes, and to document any agreement reached into a legally recognised Consent Order, which once sealed by a Judge, is then full and final and cannot be changed.
