Grey seals are born white but their coat changes colour when they shed their fur at about two to three weeks old. Normally they are grey like their name suggests. It’s only when they moult, and the black velvety coat is revealed that we can tell it's a melanistic seal. Melanism is the increased development of the dark-coloured pigment melanin.

Beautifully Rare

The idea of beauty is always shifting. Sometimes the rare stand out as being very attractive. It certainly goes for the melanistic seal pups on Blakeney Point. They are very rare, black and beautiful.

If you ever come across a seal pup, please keep your distance and do not approach or disturb these wild animals in any way, as this may cause unnecessary stress. Hedgehog Haven

Meet Matt, he came into care on 21st January. He was found lying fully exposed in the daytime, when hedgehogs should be curled up and be round in shape like a football. Matt was very clearly underweight as his back end was tapered and rugby ball shaped. With meds for lungworm, and to start with, some high calorie liquid food syringe feed, he is gaining weight slowly, so much so that I have now been able to move him from indoors into the hogspital shed, so should be fit & well in time for a Spring release.

A Note from the editor

Beach clean guardians needed

Greetings from a cold, damp and windy cliff top in Sheringham. Just when all seems gloomy and dark there are some small glimmers of something better on the horizon. Nights are starting to draw out a little, the garden is beginning to show some new life and the vaccine roll out has started apace. North Norfolk infection numbers are slowly but steadily falling, could it be time to take a breath and hope that better times are ahead?

Through our small grant fund, we’d like to fund a Norfolk Coast Partnership sponsored beach clean station, or 3, and need volunteer guardians at each site to manage the day-to-day running of these. Guardian responsibilities include putting the information board out each morning and bringing it in at night with regard to weather and tides and so a storage facility and nearby, suitable waste disposal will be essential. We think this would suit a beach-side café, shop, or other coastal business perhaps? Full training will be provided.

We can’t afford to relax rules yet and there is still a long way to go, but thanks to the dedicated work of our scientists, NHS workers, voluntary workers and all those working so hard to get us all vaccinated, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Three new vaccination centres are now open in our area so no excuses for not responding when you get the call for your jab, as the old advert said, ‘you know it makes sense’.

Of course, we would be looking to place new boards once the current Covid-19 restrictions are ended.

Beach clean litter picking stations are provided by the 2 Minute Foundation, a registered charity devoted to cleaning up our planet 2 minutes at a time, who believe that simple, achievable acts can add up to make a great difference. Communities and visitors are encouraged to spend 2 (or more) minutes picking up marine litter from their #2minutebeachclean station boards. Further details are on their website https://beachclean.net/ and see the Norfolk coast locations (you’ll see that there is quite a gap between Hunstanton and Cley!), along with other excellent local beach clean initiatives, at www.norfolkcoastaonb.org.uk/partnership/beach-clean-events/691

Valentine’s Day is upon us and whilst that special meal out is not possible this year, perhaps it is time to do something different to show you care this year. Many of our local traders are offering click and collect or online ordering including florists, gift shops and chocolatiers. Why not include a promissory note in your sweetheart’s card for that night out or special meal, there is nothing like something to look forward to in these uncertain times. Alternatively, put some of those home cooking skills you have been honing to work and impress with something fabulous. Whatever you decide, do something special for someone and make their day.

New boards would be part of an innovative project where low grade waste, the kind picked up on beach cleans which cannot be easily recycled, is put to good use. Alongside several other organisations, including Reworked and The Ocean Recovery Project, the 2 Minute Foundation are turning this low-grade plastic into the litter picking stations, making a completely closed-loop operation.

North Norfolk Taxis Association celebrates continued success

regulations handbook.

North Norfolk taxi & Private Hire Association was formed in 2012 to represent the trade & address issues that came about due to North Norfolk District Councils review of the taxi rules and

Steve Heels asks anyone who is a licensed North Norfolk taxi or private hire driver who has not yet joined to visit the website, www.nntpha.weebly.com

There is a simple to complete application form that you can submit online. This can also be done on any smart phone too. You can also email the secretary at nntpha@aol.com.

Secretary Steve Heels said over the years it has helped many members with various issues they've encountered. With over 150 members & a committee with over 80 years combined experience in the trade it has worked at forming a good working relationship with the council, this has proven invaluable most recently with the latest 2020 handbook review.

It is currently free to join as the association recognises that everyone’s finances are suffering at the moment.

The association has saved every driver and operator money over the last 8 years especially with the implementation of this new handbook which takes effect from 1st April 2021, but can only continue to be heard with everyone’s support.

NNDCs latest review of the handbook saw new statutory guidance being introduced along with many new rules.

North Norfolk Taxi & Private Hire Association www.nntpha.weebly.com

Chairperson Ashley Colman said the association had worked tirelessly over the last few months with licensing chairperson Pierre Butikofer, Licensing portfolio holder Nigel Lloyd & thanked Councillors Georgie Perry-Warnes, Peter Fisher & Emma Spagnola for their time on this matter along with Licensing officers Lara Clare & Tracy Howard.

Letter from County Councillor Judy Oliver

Dear Residents, I wanted to update you on significant progress towards getting a roundabout on the top of Holway Road, Sheringham where it meets the Holt Road, a project I have been working on pretty much solidly since 2017!

Ashley said that after many hours of meetings addressing the issues that the secretary Steve Heels had raised on behalf of the trade the culmination of these meetings had resulted in the most comprehensive joint review of the Taxi rule handbook ever known.

The good news is that after Duncan Baker MP and I met with the Chief Executive of the New Anglia Local Enterprise partnership last year, I'm delighted to say we were invited to submit a business case for the project to join the LEP investment pipeline. The business case for the roundabout (named the 'Sheringham Gateway' project) has now gone in, supported of course by Duncan Baker and by Sheringham Town Council, Upper Sheringham Town Council and Beeston Regis Parish Council. All three councils and NNDC have also kindly offered financial contributions towards the cost of the project.

The taxi association are about 150 members short of representing nearly every licensed Taxi/PH driver & Operator in North Norfolk.

Still n Ope

Still Ope n

We all know that a roundabout will improve residents’ quality of life by eliminating the long stressful queues trying to get onto the A148; it will mean that vehicles need not travel via Upper Sheringham or Britons Lane to avoid the long wait and difficult exit onto the A148; and it will encourage tourists and visitors to visit Sheringham. Tourism is a vital part of Sheringham’s economy, and we need to do all we can to help our businesses thrive once visitors can return after the end of this dreadful pandemic. I won't stop working to get a roundabout until we see the first shovel in the ground, but I am absolutely delighted that we have finally reached this important stage! Best wishes, Judy Oliver, County Councillor for Sheringham and Beeston Regis

Healthwatch Norfolk report highlights praise for care home staff amidst ongoing pandemic challenges

Residents of care homes across Norfolk, their families and friends, and care home staff, have spoken frankly about their experiences during the pandemic in a recently published report from Healthwatch Norfolk.

The report, which was submitted to Norfolk County Council (NCC) in December, highlights a range of challenges, including the mental health of residents and staff and communication with families.

One key finding was that 87% of residents felt their care home staff had helped them to feel safe throughout the pandemic.

The County Council commissioned Healthwatch Norfolk, an independent organisation, to collect this feedback. The findings can then be used by NCC’s Adult Social Care team to review the support provided in nursing and residential homes, where COVID-19 continues to pose serious risks.

In total, Healthwatch Norfolk heard from 152 people and collected feedback from 41 different care homes across the county. Of these responses, 109 were residents, 31 were staff, and 35 were relatives or friends.

Some key findings from the report include: • Whilst using PPE was recognised as a necessary precaution, many staff struggle wearing it all day and find it challenging to communicate with residents. • Some staff noted difficulty arranging care for residents from healthcare professionals such

• •

as psychiatrists, GPs, care coordinators and dentists because of delays caused by COVID-19. Friends/family had very varied experiences of being kept informed by their care home, ranging from regular updates to feeling very out of the loop. The vast majority of residents said that the staff had helped to make them feel safe. Even though the normal programmes of entertainment have stopped, most staff are trying to help residents cope with the changes through organising their own internal activities. Friends/family shared mixed opinions about whether they have confidence in their loved one’s care home during another lockdown.

Notably, both staff and family members of residents also said that residents’ mental health has been affected, particularly due to restricted visiting arrangements. Even though care home workers have faced high levels of stress which has impacted their own wellbeing, most who responded to the survey said they felt well-informed about COVID-19 and had closer and improved working relationships with their colleagues throughout the pandemic.

Despite this, many comments indicated the difficulties in making information user-friendly for residents. This was particularly evident in staff that work with residents with dementia, as one carer expressed: “The majority of our residents have varying levels of dementia, so I can inform them, but depending on the

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

individual they may not be able to retain the information or understand what the changes mean.”

The feedback received has prompted Healthwatch Norfolk to make several recommendations to Norfolk County Council and the wider care sector. These include “to work with local Primary Care providers and mental health trusts to explore how care homes can best support residents whose mental health has suffered as a result of COVID-19”, and for care providers to “seek to improve how decisions about changes to visiting are communicated to family and friends.”

In response to Healthwatch Norfolk’s report, James Bullion, Norfolk County Council’s Executive Director of Adult Social Services, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the different health and care organisations for their hard work over this very challenging year – collaborative working has been exceptional and has made a huge impact on people’s care and lives.

“Out of this situation, we’ve made some really positive changes to how we care for people. It’s important we don’t lose these and that we continue to build on them over the coming months. Recommendations from this report will help us to continually improve how we provide care for the future.”

To read the full report, please visit the Healthwatch Norfolk website.

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offe fers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

Sweet Treat for Valentine’s Day

Method Preheat the oven to 180c/Gas 4. Grease and line a 13x9” swiss roll tin.

Place a sheet of baking parchment bigger than the sponge tin on a cooling rack and dust with caster sugar, (I secure mine with bulldog clips).

We may not be able to indulge in fine dining this Valentine’s Day, but we can still make the effort to treat the object of our affection with something indulgent.

Guaranteed to impress but surprisingly easy to make, this decadent roulade will have your sweetheart eating out of your hand, or at least licking their plate. If raspberries are not your thing, then substitute other fruit such as tinned black cherries, pureed banana, or other fruit of your choice, just make sure the fruit is well drained if using tinned. You could also add a little liqueur of your choice to the whipped cream for a boozy kick.

Chocolate and Raspberry Roulade

Ingredients 150g/5oz caster sugar 5 eggs, separated 50g/2oz cocoa powder (not drinking chocolate) For the filling 300ml/ ½ pint double cream 1-2 tablespoons icing sugar 1 punnet of raspberries (or 1 tin black cherries, drained or other fruit of your choice).

Whisk the egg yolks with the caster sugar until thick enough to leave a trail. Sift over the cocoa powder and fold in gently and evenly. Whisk the egg whites in a grease free bowl to the soft peak stage. Fold 1 tablespoon of the whisked egg white into the chocolate mixture to loosen it, then fold in the rest evenly. Scrape the mixture into the prepared tin and smooth the surface. Bake for 20 -25 minutes until well risen and springy to the touch.

Turn out onto the prepared baking parchment and cover with a clean, damp cloth until cool.

Whip the cream with the icing sugar until it just holds its shape.

When the sponge is cool, take a sharp knife and cut ¾ of the way through the sponge one centimetre in from the short side, this will help when rolling the roulade. Spread the whipped cream evenly over the sponge and top evenly with the raspberries or other fruit. Carefully roll up the sponge from the cut edge, (an extra pair of hands may help at this stage) and sit on a plate with the roll end underneath. Decorate with extra whipped cream or chocolate shavings if desired. Don’t worry if the sponge cracks or the roll is not perfect, dust with icing sugar and it will still be delicious! Jo – editor.

Reflections on the Bust of Henry Blogg at Cromer Here we see the image of The greatest of our lifeboatmen Coxswain Henry Blogg, GC, BEM, “One of the bravest men who ever lived”, In the words of Lord Templewood, A friend and admirer of this unassuming fisherman. Blogg’s bust sits high on the clifftop, Looking out towards the boathouse And far across the German Ocean. On a sunny, summer day The sea seems as calm as a millpond, And it is difficult to visualise Other scenes of chaos and confusion As mountainous seas, whipped up by gales, Break upon this windswept shore. Stories of many men saved From numberless wrecks ‘Fernebo’, ‘Georgia’, ‘Monte Nevoso’, ‘Sepoy’ and ‘English Trader’ All have thrilling tales to tell. Blogg served in the Cromer lifeboat From 1894 until he retired in 1947 An outstanding fifty-three years. Together with his gallant crew He saved an incredible 873 lives. His own life was not without sorrow And he was much acquainted with grief, Losing two children, a brother, three Nephews and his devoted wife Before his own passing in 1954. Thousands attended his funeral At Cromer’s splendid parish church On that day in June, When the whole town Came to a standstill To honour her finest son. The quiet, humble, self-effacing Blogg Lies peacefully in the cemetery on Holt Road, Far from the scene of his former triumphs. His heroism and self-sacrifice is stuff of legend, And his name must never be forgotten. Tim Hurst-Brown

Large scale Covid-19 vaccination centres launch in King’s Lynn, Attleborough and North Walsham, accelerating the delivery of life saving jab

The NHS launches three more large scale Covid-19 vaccination centres in King’s Lynn, Attleborough and North Walsham this week as part of the biggest vaccination programme in NHS history. The centres will be located at: ▪ King’s Lynn Corn Exchange, Tuesday

Market Place, King’s Lynn, Norfolk, PE30 1JW from Monday 1 February 2021 ▪ Connaught Hall, Station Road, Attleborough, Norfolk, NR17 2AS from Wednesday 3 February 2021 ▪ North Walsham Community Centre, New Road, North Walsham, Norfolk, NR28 9DE from Saturday 6 February 2021

The centres provide an additional option to the large-scale vaccination centre in the Castle Court Shopping Centre, Norwich and the vaccination hubs already successfully delivering vaccinations in local hospitals and by GPs across the county.

Dr David Vickers, Medical Director, Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust which is co-ordinating delivery of the large vaccination centres across Norfolk and Waveney said: “We are delighted to be launching large vaccination centres in King’s Lynn, Attleborough and North Walsham, joining the centre already successfully delivering this life saving vaccination at the

Castle Quarter Shopping Centre in Norwich. Further centres will roll out in the coming weeks. The centres are capable of delivering thousands of vaccines in the coming weeks and provide a major boost to our plans to offer protection to those who would benefit most as quickly as possible. We’d like to say an enormous thank you to our amazing staff and volunteers for their incredible hard work, and also to colleagues at the Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk, Alive West Norfolk, the Trustees of Connaught Hall, and North Walsham Community Centre for letting us use their premises for this vital vaccination programme.”

Letters are being sent out by the national booking service to people in the priority groups as determined by the national Joint Committee on Vaccinations and Immunisations (JCVI) who live up to a 45-minute drive from the centres, inviting them to book an appointment at their closest Centre either online or over the phone. We would encourage everyone to book an appointment when they receive a letter but if anyone has already received a jab since the letter was sent out please disregard it.

If people would prefer to wait to be invited to attend a hospital or GP service, they are able to do so, or if they already have an appointment booked for their vaccination with a hospital or

GP service, they can choose to keep the appointment with their hospital or GP.

Melanie Craig, Chief Executive, NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group added: “NHS staff are doing an incredible job to deliver what it is the largest vaccination programme in our history, at the same time as providing vital services for people who need our care. A significant number of Norfolk and Waveney’s most vulnerable patients have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and this new centre will accelerate progress even further.

“Please don’t contact the NHS to seek a vaccine; we will contact you. When you are contacted, please attend your booked appointments. It is vital that you do not attend the Kings Lynn, Attleborough or North Walsham vaccination centres if you do not have an appointment as you will not be able to receive a vaccination.

“I urge people across Norfolk and Waveney to continue following all the guidance to control the virus and save lives – that means staying at home as much as you can, and always remembering ‘hands, face and space; it’s also vital for people that have had a dose of the vaccine to continue following the same guidance.”

Domestic abuse during the pandemic by Zuzanna Pogorzelska, Family Solicitor, Hayes + Storr

Domestic abuse has surged during the pandemic. The UN has described the worldwide increase in domestic abuse as the “shadow pandemic”. According to Victim Support, over 11,500 more people than usual accessed their services between the 23rd March and 1st November 2020. Additionally, train companies in the UK are offering free travel to refuges for men, women and children fleeing domestic abuse.

What is domestic abuse? Anyone can be a victim of domestic abuse, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, socio-economic status, sexuality, or background.

In 2015, the government’s definition of domestic violence was changed to ‘domestic abuse’ to include controlling and coercive behaviour; a more subtle form of abuse that doesn’t always involve physical violence.

This can encompass, but is not limited to, psychological, physical, sexual, financial, and emotional abuse.

What is controlling and coercive behaviour? Domestic abuse isn’t always physical. Coercive control is when someone uses manipulative behaviour to isolate their partner. The perpetrator will often monitor their partners behaviour, exploit them, break down

their support network, create a sense of fear, and deprive them of their autonomy so they believe they have no alternative other than to stay with their abuser.

According to Professor Evan Stark, a leading expert on coercive control: “the victim becomes captive in an unreal world created by the abuser, entrapped in a world of confusion, contradiction and fear.”

I’m in an abusive relationship. What can I do? During the pandemic, it has been harder for people to escape their abusers but there is never an excuse to put up with domestic abuse.

The government has made it clear that coronavirus restrictions do not apply if you need to leave your home to escape domestic abuse. If you are faced with immediate danger, call 999. Many kinds of domestic abuse are criminal offences, and the police can arrest, caution or charge the perpetrator.

If you feel you must leave the family home, you (& your children if you have any) could:

• stay with relatives or friends, • stay in a refuge, • get emergency accommodation from your local authority under homeless persons’ law – this will usually mean a bed and breakfast hostel, or;

• get private rented accommodation

If you are in an abusive relationship, you can get legal protection by applying for the following orders:

• Non-Molestation Order: to stop your partner harming or threatening you • Occupation Order: where you stay at home and your partner has to leave

Further down the line, a solicitor who is experienced in family law can advise you on:

• getting your property back or making you the legal owner of your home • deciding who your children can live with and who can see them • ending your marriage or civil partnership

Whatever you decide to do, there are many local and national organisations that can help. For advice on family law and other legal matters, call Hayes + Storr on 01263 825959.

Appeal for new volunteers to join Norfolk fundraising group, after COVID-19 cuts their fundraising total by over half

A Guide Dogs volunteering group, based in North Norfolk, is appealing for new volunteers to help raise awareness of the charity’s work and much needed donations.

In 2019, the group raised £1400 and they had been on target to raise even more than this in 2020, but restrictions due to the COVID-19 outbreak have meant their total for last year was £500. Group members also work hard to raise awareness of the charity’s work at local events, but these activities were also halted due to COVID-19.

The Guide Dogs North Norfolk Coastal supporter group, which includes several local guide dog owners, is now appealing for more volunteers to sign up, ahead of when face-to-face activities can hopefully resume later in the year.

Shaun Purbrick, from Sheringham, took over as group coordinator just before the first lockdown was announced in March last year. Shaun said: “The reason I’m involved is because my partner, Chris, is supported by a guide dog. Seeing the massive difference that having a guide dog has made to Chris, and to me, it made me want to support the charity.

In the past, if Chris went out on his own, I would feel anxious, but now knowing that he has his guide dog Pennard with him gives me peace of mind.”

The group has 10 members, including Shaun and Chris, and before the COVID-19 outbreak, held their meetings at the Sea Marge Hotel in Overstrand.

Chris and guide dog Pennard

NEW YEAR YEAR NEW HOME??

Shaun added: “It’s really rewarding supporting a worthwhile charity. It also gives you the opportunity to meet new people.”

Due to latest lockdown restrictions, Guide Dogs has advised all their supporter groups to cease all face-to-face fundraising activities, but groups can continue to fundraise and raise awareness online.

Mandy Loveder, Community Fundraising Relationship Manager for Guide Dogs in Norfolk, said: “Although our groups cannot carry out face-to-face activities currently due to the latest lockdown restrictions, they are able to keep in touch online and are looking forward to when it’s safe to start meeting people in the community again.

22021 021 – BRING IT ON ON!!

It costs around £60,000 to support a guide dog from birth to retirement and Guide Dogs relies almost entirely on public donations, so the support we get from our local groups is vital. If you’re from the North Norfolk area and think you could help us, please do get in touch.”

Guinea Pig Awareness Week at Toll Barn Vets!

As a proudly Accredited Gold Standard Rabbit Friendly Practice, Toll Barn Veterinary Centre has always been a keen participant in Rabbit Awareness Week, and our love of Guinea Pigs meant that we always opened the week for Guinea Pigs too!

Well... Exciting News! Guinea Pigs now have their very own Guinea Pig Awareness Week! Join us 22-28 March 2021 for all things Guinea Pig.

Why is Guinea Pig Awareness so important? Guinea Pigs can make wonderful pets but they are prone to several health conditions which can prove very problematic.

It is important to handle Guinea Pigs regularly and gently as they can be quite shy. Their average lifespan is between 4 and 8 years and they reach sexual maturity from 2 to 4 months of age, so always be on the look-out for sneaky litters in youngsters of mixed sexes! In mixed sex groups we can perform neutering from

4 months of age.

It is important for Guinea Pigs to have other Guinea Pigs for company, but we don’t recommend keeping them with rabbits as they frequently pass diseases between the species which can prove fatal to the other species. It is best to keep them in same sex groups, or neutered pairs.

Guinea Pigs need plenty of space with enough areas to hide away should they get worried. If kept outside they need a warm sheltered area to protect them from rain and wind, ideally with additional heating over colder nights. Guinea Pig teeth grow throughout their life and it is essential they have constant access to good quality hay to encourage grazing and dental wear. Ideally they should be fed pellets rather than muesli as this reduces selective feeding and provides a complete diet including essential Vitamin C. Guinea Pigs lack the enzyme to produce their own Vitamin C so

providing it in food is essential. Hay should be kept in suitable mangers or troughs to reduce the chances of inquisitive Guineas sticking their heads in and giving themselves eye ulcers from scratches from hay. High calcium treats such as Kale increases the chances of developing bladder and kidney stones, so these should only be fed in moderation.

Join us for Guinea Pig Awareness Week or give us a call on 01692 407126 to find out much more about keeping your Guinea healthy and happy, and stay tuned for our next article where we share some VERY exciting news for our Rabbit patients!

Local charity helping consumers save on energy bills As winter rolls in with a vengeance, the heating goes on - and the bills go up. And now we are into the third lockdown, almost all of us are having to stay at home for longer, using even more energy to keep ourselves warm.

Local charity Community Action Norfolk (CAN) is offering free training for front-line staff and volunteers who work with vulnerable members of the public, to equip them to help and advise people how to save money on their energy bills and stay warm in their homes.

Rik Martin, CAN’s Development Manager, says: “Now more than ever it’s important to raise awareness to vulnerable consumers of how to stay warm, how to use less energy, and how to pay less. The online training

NOW RECRUITING

Registered Charity No. 1097115

sessions are just 90 minutes long, so they don’t require a full day away from the workplace. They explore ways of helping vulnerable people save energy and money in their homes, to understand what support is available, dispel anxieties about switching supplier, and encourage them to look at a range of other ways of saving on their energy bills. Here at CAN we’ve long been delivering this training to staff working in housing associations, local authorities, and charities and voluntary organisations working with vulnerable people and low-income groups – anyone who is likely to encounter a need as they go about their work. It’s closely connected with the ever-present problem of fuel poverty, and one which we, in partnership with many other public authorities and charities across Norfolk, have been tackling for many years. Right now, we are faced with a three-pronged threat – winter, plus energy bills, plus Covid-19, adds up to a potential fuel poverty crisis” adds Rik. It’s estimated that around 25,000 homes across Norfolk experience some level of fuel poverty. In extreme cases, people are having to make the choice to ‘eat or heat’ – and badly heated and ventilated homes are the cause of around 600 excess winter deaths each in the county.

Age Concern North Norfolk, your local charity looking after the needs of older people, is based in Cremer Street (near the Salvation Army building) in Sheringham (NR26 8DZ).

Available dates for the online training are 12th, 17th and 23rd February and 1st March. More information can be found at bit.ly/3kn1QIg and places can be booked by emailing office@communityactionnorfolk.org.uk The training is part of the national Big Energy Saving Network – and the straightforward message this winter is ‘Check, Switch and Save’. The sessions are open to voluntary, community, public and private organisations not just in Norfolk but right across East Anglia. If you’d like a session just for your staff or volunteers please email rik.martin@communityactionnorfolk.org.uk or call 01362 698216.

ACTIVELY RECRUITING NOW… Age Concern is recruiting now for 3 bank/relief support workers to help with visits in the community and our Meals on Heels service, whilst our centre is closed during lockdown. When we re-open, we will need bank staff to cover activities and lunches at the Centre, together with assisted bathing and other services. You need a level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care (or equivalent) and will need to be DBS checked. If you are interested, please request an application form from Alison (01263 821188) and send a CV with names of two referees to our Day Centre Hub at 35b Cremer Street, Sheringham, Norfolk NR26 8DZ.

HOT FOOD TO GO!

We are still offering our Meals on Heels service for lunch time, and can deliver a delicious hot, two course meal to your door for only £3.00. If you are interested, please contact Alison on 01263 821188, email: ageconcernad@gmail.com

Breast Cancer Charity Makes a Splash with THE BIG DIP

Wild Swimming to Raise Funds for Vulnerable Women

To kick-start 2021, and shake off the Christmas cobwebs, local breast cancer charity littlelifts has launched an invigorating fundraiser encouraging wild swimmers to take part in The Big Dip Challenge.

littlelifts, which launched in 2017, provides complimentary littlelifts boxes to women facing chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment oncology and breast care teams at five hospital partnerships across Norfolk and Suffolk.

Each littlelifts box is full of thoughtfully selected items to not only help alleviate some of the physical side effects that some may experience, but many of the items simply provide a dose of emotional support for women during their treatment, and since the pandemic, the charity has been working hard to keep funds afloat.

Founder of littlelifts, Oa Hackett said: “We know that taking on a physical and mental challenge can really help to improve health and wellbeing, which is why we thought the start of 2021 would be a good reason to take to the

waters.”

Oa added, “Swimming outdoors in mid-winter might not be everyone’s cup of tea, and it must be taken seriously, but actually it’s a great time to challenge yourself and tend to your wellbeing all whilst supporting women with breast cancer. It’s great to see so many wild swimmers are joining in. I’ve been out swimming myself this month and I have noticed what an invigorating and positive impact it’s had on my wellbeing already.”

Participants are invited to take a ‘Big Dip’ as a one-off or there’s an invitation to swim weekly or even daily, the options are down to the individual. It costs £15 to register and those who take part in the Big Dip will receive their very own littlelifts’ Big Dip Calendar to track their swims, a choccy treat to keep their energy up, and the first 100 people to register will also be sent a limited edition littlelifts swimming cap!

It isn’t essential but participants are encouraged to involve their friends and family to sponsor the challenge. Individuals can set up

their own fundraising page online: littlelifts.enthuse.com/fundraising/start#!

To find out more and to register go to: www.littlelifts.org.uk/events/littlelifts-bigdip-challenge

For those wanting something slightly less exhilarating yet equally as active, littlelifts has also this week launched littlelifts’ Big 30 Let’s get moving! The charity is encouraging people to do 30 minutes of exercise every day for 30 days. Whether it’s walking around the block, going for a run, star jumps while watching TV or doing steps on the stairs – as long as you’re moving for 30 minutes, it counts. Participants will receive your own littlelifts Big 30 calendar in the post to record their activities (UK only) and they can choose the day they start the 30-day challenge. £10 for adults, 16 & under £5 – sign up free includes calendar to track daily 30 min activities.

Local Councillor Challenges Lifting of Ban on Neonicotinoid Pesticide environment.’ Cllr. Nigel Lloyd 07954055966 nigel.lloyd@north-norfolk.gov.uk

North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Environment, Liberal Democrat councillor Nigel Lloyd, has written to George Eustice MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs asking him to reconsider the recent Government decision to lift the ban on pesticides that contain Neonicotinoid Thiamethoxam. These Chemicals were banned by the Government in 2017. At that time, the Government announced that scientific evidence suggests that the environmental risks posed by neonicotinoids – particularly to our bees and pollinators – are greater than previously understood, supporting the case for further restrictions. Research estimates the value to the UK’s 1,500 species of pollinators to crops at £400680million per year due to improved productivity.

The Government position on this issue is as follows: After careful consideration of all the issues, the government has decided to grant an application for emergency authorisation to allow use of a product containing the neonicotinoid thiamethoxam for the treatment of sugar beet seed in 2021. This is in recognition of the potential danger posed to the 2021 crop from beet yellows virus. An emergency authorisation for the short-term use of a product (and placing on the market for no more than 120 days) may be granted if the following requirements are met: • the authorisation appears necessary because of a danger which cannot be contained by any other reasonable

The Environment Secretary Michael Gove said in 2017: ‘The weight of evidence now shows the risks neonicotinoids pose to our environment, particularly to the bees and other pollinators which play such a key part in our £100bn food industry, is greater than previously understood. I believe this justifies further restrictions on their use. We cannot afford to put our pollinator populations at risk.’

To read the full government position go to: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/neon icotinoid-product-as-seed-treatment-for-sugarbeet-emergency-authorisation-application/statement-on-the-decision-to-issue-with-strict-conditio ns-emergency-authorisation-to-use-a-productcontaining-a-neonicotinoid-to-treat-sugar-beet

AND ST STORAGE ORAGE LTD LTD : 01692 016 500 501

The letter says: ‘I am writing to express my dismay that pesticides containing Neonicotinoid Thiamethoxam have been given emergency use approval by your government, overturning a ban introduced in 2018.

Your Government has a history of supporting a ban when in 2018 it upheld it after an application for 'emergency use' was put before them because of the potential harmful impact on bees and pollinators. It is extremely disappointing that the Government has now taken a U-turn on its original ban of these dangerous chemicals.

Editor’s note Norfolk is a major producer of sugar beet which supports thousands of jobs within the industry. 3000 growers in East Anglia and the East Midlands supply half of the UK sugar supply. (www.britishsugar.co.uk)

NORTH NOR TH NORF NORFOLK OLK REMO REMOVALS VALS A

It is therefore extremely disappointing that these dangerous chemicals will once again be entering the environment. North Norfolk Councillors have been lobbied by constituents on this matter, their concerns are shared by the Bumblebee Trust and the Wildlife Trusts who are actively considering a legal challenge to this decision.

The ban was introduced as a result of overwhelming scientific evidence of the negative impacts on bees and other pollinators. Indeed, the then environment secretary Michael Gove endorsed this ban in 2017.

To those who are concerned about the environment and wildlife in the UK the decision is a great cause for concern. The science remains clear on neonicotinoid use and nothing has changed since the 2018 ban.

Bees and other pollinators are not just good for the ecosystem, they are essential!

Therefore, I urge you to reconsider allowing this dangerous pesticide to be reintroduced into the environment and instead re-commit to protecting the bees, other wildlife, and the wider

Winter Flowers

Also, in the garden and coming into flower now is the Hellebore - Christmas or Lenten Rose is the common name it gets its name from the rose like flowers, these plants will flower from January through to May. The blooms will last a very long time and are good value for money. The foliage is green, with a variety of different colour combinations. This is another plant that is hardy, easy to grow and likes partial shade with a rich moist, well-drained soil. They do not like to be baked! When planting Hellebores make sure that you plant the crown or top of the plant just under the surface as it does not like a depth of soil over it. Every year give the plants a Hellebore good feed of compost, manure or general fertiliser as this These plants are very versatile and like the majority of soils provided will encourage more flowers. In late November prior to them making they stay moist; they also prefer shade as well. They can be purchased flowers cut back the leathery foliage, as this will encourage new growth. usually in pots at this time of the year as they prefer to be planted out or Hellebores can be planted with crocus, daffodils or phlox. Please be split whilst they are in the green. In other words, whilst they have focareful when handling the plants as they contain toxins that are harmful liage. Most They are also deer resistant! snowdrops flower before the Vernal Equinox or the 20th March Finally, my last shrub that mirrors the common hazel and catkins that are out now in the hedge My second favourite flower and one I tend to plant rows is the Witch Hazel, this is a shrub that can alongside snowdrops which sets them off are Winbe grown in a large pot or open ground, in partial ter Aconite, which is mainly yellow, although you shade it also goes well with all the other plants can now get a white flowering variety. Both of mentioned. Witch hazel requires moist soil and these plants go well in wildlife areas, under plantmulching during the summer to avoid it drying ing of trees and roses. Aconites come from the out. If it is in a pot outside protect the roots from buttercup family and will spread using their undersevere frost and water well in the summer. In ground system of tubers to propagate. They too open ground it can grow to 15 feet tall and will Witch Hazel like the majority of soils, providing they are moist and will thrive in a need regular pruning after flowering each year. The shrub produces wonshady area. They grow to approximately 10 cm tall and will need dividderful spidery like flowers, with a strong fragrance and the flowers come ing from time to time, again they should be planted straight away and in a range of beautiful colours. Whatever the size of garden you have it not allowed to dry out. If they are grown under grass, do not mow until is well worth the investment. they have all died back. Chris Wright I am going to go in a completely different direction this month, with looking at my favourite flowers for the start of the year, the ones I always look forward too with excitement, as this beckons spring. Snowdrops are the first to flower, they come from the genus Galanthus, with over 2,500 varieties to choose from. They also have such variations of leaf and petal combinations, single or double flowers, large or small, different shades of green and yellow. They are often confused with two related genre Snowflakes Lencejum and Acio, similar but larger in stature and flowers much later.

£8m imaging equipment replacement scheme continues

One of the biggest equipment replacement programmes at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust continues to be delivered, despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A new MRI magnet was delivered and craned into place at Cromer and District Hospital on Saturday 16 January, having been manufactured and shipped from the USA. The hospital’s old MRI was craned out of the building on 14 November, and build works to the facility will ensure that patients will benefit from improved quality of imaging, safety improvements and an enhanced experience, which will be operational from 22 February.

The £8m project to replace vital imaging equipment will see the change-out of four MRI scanners a CT scanner at the Trust. An additional CT scanner will also be added in the Radiology department at NNUH. The scheme follows ‘Aged Assets’ government funding that was announced in 2019, as well as benefiting from Adapt and Adopt Covid-19 funding.

www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

Work has also been ongoing since 9 November to start the reconfiguration of the Radiology department at NNUH to allow for the integration of the new CT scanner, which required the relocation of a Plain Film changing area and the department’s staff rest room. The MRI and CT machines that are due to be replaced are more than 13 years old and the replacement programme will continue until August.

Dr Rayhaan Rahaman, NNUH Chief of Imaging, said: “Despite the challenges that we face as a result of Covid, we are very pleased that this significant investment is continuing to be deployed. Latest state-of-the-art scanners will make a huge difference to patient care and staff experience with improved imaging and reliability benefiting the Trust with research and training.” Further installations of the new scanners are expected to take place in February and March.

RNLB Louisa Heartwell returns to RNLI but will begin as soon as possible.

David Welton, Heritage Manager for the RNLI is leading the project: ‘It is a privilege to be able to safeguard the lifeboat Louisa Heartwell for the RNLI. The boat is such an iconic vessel. It is a rare survivor of the early Liverpool class and comes with a wealth of history of her 29 years on station at Cromer and links to Cox Henry Blogg.’

Lifeboat Louisa Heartwell on Cromer beach with crew

On 9 January 1917, the lifeboat Louisa Heartwell undertook two rescues in 14 hours. The Cromer crew pushed themselves and their vessel to their limits that day with only sail and oars to power the open boat through the gale tossed sea. Eventually they succeeded in saving 16 men from the Pyrin and 11 from the Fernebo. Now this historic lifeboat has returned to the RNLI.

Lifeboat Louisa Heartwell is gently lifted from her mooring on the Chichester canal and transported by road to Poole, Dorset in 2020

WANT A SWEETER DEAL ON YOUR INSURANCE?

The boat currently sits at the All-weather Lifeboat Centre, Poole in storage until a permanent ‘berth’ is available at the historic lifeboat collection in Chatham, Kent. The lifeboat will then undergo significant conservation before joining the museum display.

The Louisa Heartwell is one of only 7 surviving pulling-sailing Liverpool class lifeboats out of a build class of 40 – and is an early-mid build one (1902), the earliest extant with the exception of Chapman (1901). The lifeboat served at Cromer 1902-31 saving 195 lives.

The boat was moored at Chichester Marina and offered to the RNLI by Premier Marinas. An initial inspection in November 2019 assessed the condition of the boat before the decision was made to accept her into the RNLI collection of historic craft. The boat has undergone numerous changes since 1931 when she was sold to a private owner. A top deck, cabin, motor and propeller were installed to make her useful as a cruiser and later a houseboat. It is difficult to assess the entirety of the hull as it has been sheathed to keep it watertight but from the parts that are accessible it seems to be in good condition for a wooden structure 118 years old.

The intention is to carefully remove all of the structure added since the boat left active service, uncover the hull and conserve any original material. Decisions will be made during the project about whether to add new material to restore the boat to a particular date or conserve and display just the remaining original structure.

The work on the project has been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic

Legendary lifeboatman Henry George Blogg was awarded the first of his gold medals in 1917 following a service on Louisa Heartwell where he led his crew in assisting the Swedish steamer, Fernebo after an explosion had broken the vessel in two in gale force winds. The lifeboat was successfully launched and rescued 11 survivors.

NOW AVAILABLE CONTACT PETE ON

We are delighted to be able to advise you that by the time you read this Brinn will have left us for his new home. To see him now and recall how he was when he first joined makes us realise why we continue to help cats that, for whatever reason, need to come into care until we can find them a new home. The family who had been patiently waiting for him to be given a clean bill of health, were amazed at his recovery and only to willing to offer him a home where he will get all the love and attention he deserves. His operation was very expensive, but we do always ensure we have funds to pay for whatever treatment the cats may need. Fortunately, most cats that join us are healthy and only need routine treatment and care.

Following on from mentioning last time about the “stray” cats which do have owners, I have seen many mentions of this on discussion groups recently and have even had conversations with some of the people concerned. It is apparent from that these are not isolated incidents, but are happening on a regular basis, causing much distress to the cat(s) families. Please therefore do not encourage a cat by feeding it if it does look fit and well (and may even be wearing a collar). If in doubt, however, take the cat to the vets to check to see if it is chipped or contact the RSPCA if it appears unwell or injured.

After the last article, Stephanie had several enquiries from people offering homes to Dilys and her new companions. They had however, already joined Stephanie’s household so were not available. At the time of writing, we have no kittens in care. However, we do have people waiting to offer

homes to any that may join us, although we rarely see kittens born at this time of the year.

We continue to offer help with the cost of neutering for people with feral cats, although we are not able to help with the catching and taking to the vets for their operations. We are aware there are new arrivals at one of the sites we help as cats have migrated there from other sites close by when they realise food is available on a regular basis. Efforts are Brinn being made at present to catch them to ensure there is not a new batch of kittens later this year. We have also recently received a request for help to neuter another feral and her four kittens from last year and, fingers crossed, these will be at the vets shortly. We are extremely grateful to the vets we use for this, who always do their best to work with the person doing the trapping. Obviously. they cannot guarantee that the cat will go in the trap on the day chosen for the operation. In one instance recently the trap was borrowed to catch a last year’s feral kitten. The kitten was caught on the third attempt after two other cats had been caught. Having had to get up very early to manage this it was more a case of “the early bird catches the kitten”.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. Contractual disputes expected to rise in 2021

The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) anticipates that there may be more COVID-19 related contractual disputes in the construction sector this year.

At the start of the pandemic in March 2020, parties were reportedly more willing to tolerate breaches of contract and resolve disputes amicably due to a mutual understanding of the effects that COVID has had on businesses and their ability to complete projects and meet deadlines.

However, the CLC considers that attitudes have since hardened, due to the fact that most firms are expected to have adapted their working practices to mitigate the economic effects of the pandemic. It anticipates that, while firms may be willing to agree an extension of time for completion, there is a reluctance to agree financial losses, costs and expenses. The CLC has advised firms to try to resolve disputes constructively amongst themselves without the need for an adjudicator and that, if an adjudicator

is necessary, it is vital that firms keep good contemporaneous records relating to the impact of COVID on productivity and costs and what steps they have taken to reduce this impact.

Whilst the CLC’s predictions are particularly relevant to the construction sector, they apply to all types of commercial contracts, transactions and disputes. The working practices of the vast majority, if not all, businesses across the UK have been affected by COVID-19, with the restrictions on travel, the “stay at home” message and reduced staff levels due to Furlough leave and redundancies. Therefore, the ability of all kinds of businesses to provide services may be compromised.

In light of this, it is important for businesses to be aware of their rights and obligations under commercial contracts, both at the time of entering into the contract and in the event of a possible breach. It is therefore prudent to seek legal advice at the earliest possible opportunity.

Our Corporate and Commercial and Litigation teams provide specialist, tailored and commercially focused advice to suit the needs of your business.

To comply with social distancing rules, our team can offer telephone or video appointments from the comfort of your home.

Police Officers Under Attack A Police Officer having to self-isolate after being spat at by a suspect who claimed they had Covid-19 has called for the Government to urgently place police officers on the priority list for the vaccine.

Daytime 07736 516644 Evening 01263 663042

The Norfolk Police Sergeant and four colleagues from the force’s Operation Moonshot team, which disrupts criminals on the road networks, now face an anxious wait to see if they have contracted the virus following the incident.

clint_brown_1@hotmail.com

CHESS PROBLEMS by Dr Cedric Lytton

The Sgt – who asked not to be named - said the incident was “a nightmare” and he fears for his family’s safety.

He said: “Luckily it felt like the spit missed me, but it went onto the other officers with me, on a female officer’s hair and in another officer’s face. But you’re still in a close environment and you don’t know if any of the droplets have gone into your eyes.

“It’s just disgusting. He said he had Covid-19 and he was coughing in the back of the police car. We’re just waiting now and they’re going to find out if he is actually Covid-19 positive. It’s a nightmare, the team is worried, they’re anxious and questioning whether they’ve got Covid-19. It’s just awful. You can’t go on patrol in full PPE because you’d have to change it every time you stop a car. We’re a proactive unit and we’re stopping cars all the time. We’re doing a lot of work around county lines, so we are mixing with people from different areas. I’ve been in this job 21 years and I’ve been spat at a few times, and it’s never nice. It’s the lowest of the low. You’re thinking to yourself, it’s not just me that this affects, it affects my family too. I can’t go out of the house, I have to consider where I’m staying in the house because I don’t want to give it to somebody else if I do have it.”

Apologies for the misprint in No. 286; wBh1/bBh2 should have been on h2/h3 resp. as diagrammed above. Solution: 1. Nf5. 1… Bc5 2. Nxc7; 1. Rc5 2. Nxd4 (the Grimshaw theme, mutual interferences on c5); 1… c5 2. Qxd7; 1… Ndc5 2. Qe8; 1… Nec5 2. Qc6. The threat 2. Nf4 closes the line of guard of white Bh2 on e5 but opens the Q’s guard on the same square; the 5 moves to c5 defend by closing off this second guard, so that the threat would unguard e5. This is the Levmann theme. By-play 1… Bxfs 2. Re8.

The Sgt said he would feel “a million per cent” more confident doing his job if he was vaccinated. He said that his team had entered a house recently where the occupants later told them they had Covid-19. He said: “These people are unpredictable. I cannot understand, we are a 24-hour resource, you could probably get the whole force vaccinated in less than 24 hours. I don’t get why we are being left behind.” Norfolk Police Federation Chairman Andy Symonds once again reiterated his call for officers to get the Covid-19 Vaccine.

No. 287 shows the master hand with a spectacular key and sparkling play. If you don’t see the key soon, you can always solve by the computer method of trying every white move! Difficulty 3.

Andy said: “Police officers can’t ‘distance’ from the public on duty. Dealing with these types of horrible incidents - as we do each and every day - puts our colleagues at an extremely heightened risk. This is why it's so important that police officers and frontline staff receive the Covid-19 vaccine as a matter of urgency. Throughout this pandemic we have been at work having to arrest people who don’t want to be arrested and therefore they assault us. We’ve seen a rise in the abhorrent act of spitting at officers by people who claim to have, or actually have, Covid-19. It is simply morally right for this Government to come forward with proposals on how they will vaccinate police officers to protect them and their families. In turn the police service can then continue to police and keep our communities safe.”

Solutions to me at 16 Lime Grove, Sheringham NR26 8NX, or e-mail to lestershaw7@gmail.com.

Garry Enslin (Sheringham) is our worthy winner with a 100% score for 2020, and will enjoy his meal-for-two prize when lockdown is over. Honourable mention to Edward Hackford (Blakeney), and commendations to new solvers Geoff Stichbury and Alan Tutt (Cromer).

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club News from the Club House ...

Welcome to February, the bowls season is getting closer but in what form? Hopefully, the recent World Bowls Championships on TV has whetted your appetite to be involved on the green. You can’t beat our cliff top location to revitalise you on a sunny Cromer day!

The green is continuing to flourish with various ‘concoctions’ due to be spread on it and more professional TLC to be given in the middle of this month. There have been some early signs of bowls interest with a friendly game organised for May, if we are allowed, and also an expression of interest from a new member.

Unfortunately, as we all know, times are precarious with regards to health and the Club has been hit with sad news about a member for the third time in as many months. Les Kiss passed away on 13th January. Following admittance to hospital for an operation Les contracted the COVID virus and died at home with his family. Les was a stalwart of the men’s team for over 15 years, being a valuable team member with his independent style and invariably playing as ‘skip’. He loved his bowls and will be greatly missed. Condolences to his family and friends from all at the club.

We know some local bowls players did not have the opportunity to play last year, so we encourage you to put ‘Contact Cromer Marrams’ in your diary for April. We have all the official COVID safety features in place, tried and tested last season, so all being well we will be open for play as soon as the government/ weather permits in April, only 2 months away! You will be most welcome For al to join us. Our spo your l membership r ts in N gea subscription will Nor orth r remain at only folk £65 (if we get a Indoor & Outdoor Sports full normal season) and we are open Equipment and Clothing 10am to 8pm every day from April to Gift Vouchers now available September!
