Richard Annis, a long-time supporter and ex crew member at Cromer RNLI has been appointed its chairperson, following on from the end of tenure of Derek Hinds. On handing over Derek said, ‘It has been a honour and a privilege to have been chair for the past 4years and I thank the crew and management and the local community for their support during my tenure’.

Richard’s association with the RNLI began in 1997 when he became a Cheshire Branch Chairman the role in which he continued until 2006.

Rodney Clark-Ward of the Westerleigh Group who run Cromer Crematorium met with some of the crew last week.

He presented a cheque which will be used towards costs at the station.

In 2006 he joined the shore crew at RNLI Cromer, which meant he was involved in various roles: -

On 11 January we had our usual excellent lunch at the Links Hotel in West Runton, followed by a most interesting and well-illustrated talk by Paul Rundle, for which he was thanked by our chairman and all present.

A Note from the editor

Poppy Café is expanding!

February is the transition between winter and spring, or so they say. The first snowdrops are here, so that’s hopeful. I have a nagging feeling the weather has a bit more in store for us before we are clear of winter.

But let’s be positive, restrictions are lifting, and people are getting together again. Lots of groups and events are coming back – the new normal starting to take shape. In that vein, I notice a cautious return of some of our annual events this year. Holt Festival is in the pipeline, Sheringham Viking Festival is due to happen in April this year, we await news about the town carnivals and 40s weekend.

If you listened to the news recently you would have heard of the predicted increase in the number of people living with dementia over coming years.

In Holt, we are already seeing that increase, with many more families approaching our charity for support. Having successfully maintained our services throughout the pandemic, we are currently looking to increase our provision in order to meet this rising tide of need. Since the beginning of January, we now offer weekly Poppy Café sessions on Monday mornings as well as our well-established Tuesday Café.

Another traditional event this month, Valentine’s Day, is a chance to treat your loved one and show how much you care. No matter if it’s a movie and take-away at home or a posh meal out, cup of tea in bed or popping the question, make someone feel special.

Clearly as our services expand our need for volunteers also increases.

If you enjoy convivial conversation, fun activities, coffee and cake, plus the satisfaction of giving someone living with dementia the opportunity to enjoy a pleasant social outing, perhaps you’d consider volunteering. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to join in and extend the hand of friendship to families in need.

Whatever you are up to, enjoy your February magazine.

Poppy Friends began last year, aiming to offer additional support for those in this situation by providing a monthly meeting for carers to enjoy a coffee and share experiences. Cromer Town Council Cromer Honours and Commendation Awards Year Ended 31st December 2021

Though very small in membership, those who came including a visitor, very new to the village- had a most interesting afternoon. We had been asked to bring an item of clothing which held a special significance and tell the rest of us why this was the case. Sat around 4 tables pushed together we were able easily to see and hear every detail. It was nicely informant– but also intimate. The items were as individual as the people who brought them along. Amongst them, a cashmere scarf, a fox-fur hat, a small sparkly evening bag, a special cardigan and a dainty little white glove which had connected with the glove worn by our Queen! We also saw a riotously patterned pair of long trousers, as well as two wedding dresses- neither particularly conventional but both distinctly different in appearance, though the fabric was a similar shade of lemon. One was long and elegant with short sleeves, whilst the other, entirely stitched by hand, was long-sleeved but short. It was, when made, the 1960s and was made from a fabric remnant- not a very big one either!

Much of this work by its very nature, goes largely unrecognized and may not be fully appreciated by the community at large.

We were informed that our area adviser will attend our February meeting to deal with the formality of closing us down.

The Council is looking towards anyone who has made a significant contribution to the quality of an individual, or wider community life in Cromer, during the last year.

The Cromer Town Council Award Scheme to recognise significant achievement by an individual, or group, enters its 24th year.

So far well over 100 people or groups have received the awards, which are presented by the Mayor of Cromer at the Annual Town Meeting.

Every year one hears of work or a deed being done within our community which enhances the quality of life in our town or of its inhabitants.

Following a refreshment break when a lovely variety of homemade cakes were consumed with our tea, the business part of the meeting took place. This did not take long as there were only a small number of things to be dealt with.

Who is eligible for an Award?

Any person, young or old, and group or organisation, is eligible to be considered.

All rather sad, though an inevitable end to our personal W.I. era.

If you know someone, a group or organisation, who you feel should be considered for an honour, please contact the Town Council office for a nomination form which must be completed and returned to the Town Clerk by noon on 28 February 2022. Copies of the nomination form will also be made available from the Town Council website www.cromer-tc.gov.uk

Freemasons Gift to Foodbank

North Walsham Freemasons from the 'Lodge of Unanimity No102' made a New Year visit to the 'North Norfolk Food Bank' distribution centre in Cromer.

The purpose of the visit was to present a donation from the Lodge of £750 to Tim Morton who is the Project Manager. Brian Ian Walker, Tim Morton and Brian Galasky.

Galasky who is the current Master and Ian Walker who is Charity Steward of the lodge made the presentation and heard more details about the running of the foodbank from Tim Morton.

Norfolk Cycle Challenge to celebrate 250 years of NNUH

A new cycle challenge has been set by the Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals Charity in celebration of the hospital’s 250th anniversary.

The fitness fundraising challenge is part of the celebrations to mark the special anniversary in our county’s healthcare history, allowing the charity to also celebrate 250 years of philanthropy.

Work began on original hospital in St Stephens, in the heart of Norwich city centre, began in 1771 and opened for patients in 1772 with 100 beds, all of which could only happened with the generosity of donations. The hospital was later rebuilt at the present Colney Lane site and opened to patients in 2001.

For 2022, the N&N Hospitals Charity is challenging everyone to participate in the Norfolk Village Cycle Challenge. Whether you are a beginner or a more experienced cyclist, we want you to get on your bike to fundraise and or donate in multiples of £25 to represent the 250 years of charitable donations that has benefited our NHS hospital.

Worstead Festival 2022

World Day of Prayer

The people of Worstead are once again planning to welcome thousands of people to its village festival on the weekend of July 30th & 31st this year.

(Formerly Womens’ World Day of Prayer) will be held on Friday March 4th at 2pm at Cromer Parish Church.

Everyone is welcome. Refreshments to follow.

Sing Your Heart

The chair of the trustees, Jane Bond says, “We’re thrilled to be staging our summer party again after two years when we haven’t been able to put it on.”

Sing Your Heart Out North is a singing workshop for health and well-being which meets at The Lighthouse Cromer Road Sheringham. In person workshops are starting up again between 2pm and 3.30pm on selected Mondays in February, March and April.

“I’m looking forward to the displays, competitions, arts and crafts, music, food and drink. It’s about meeting friends, entertaining the kids and having some fun.”

The first Worstead Festival was in 1966 to raise money to stop the tower at the 14th century St Mary’s church from falling down. Since then it’s raised thousands of pounds for good causes in the village and beyond.

There is no need to book just turn up and you will receive a warm welcome.

Pick up some cooking tips from some of the county’s top chefs in the kitchen demonstrations. There’ll be horses, tractors, cattle, dogs, military vehicles, a mini railway and much more. It’s all being held in the idyllic setting in fields behind the church. Car parking is close-by and free.

Following on from our 'Stage to Screen' day school last November, WEA Wells branch will be running another film-themed day course in Wells Maltings on Saturday 5th March.

The Worstead Festival was first held in 1966 to raise money to save its outstandingly beautiful and historically significant church. It has grown into a weekend of family entertainment. It celebrates rural life, farming, crafts, produce and the heritage of Worstead and North Norfolk.

Our tutor this time will be Nigel Herwin and his subject 'Alfred Hitchcock Master of Suspense'. Hitchcock is arguably one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema. Even today his ability to manipulate cinema audiences remains undiminished and his themes of murder, guilt and obsession still fascinate. Using film clips this day school will explore Hitchcock’s style, set pieces and preoccupations, and demonstrate that he truly does deserve the title ‘Master of Suspense’.

Different Generations Gain Enjoyment as they learn from each other

One of the many consequences of the pandemic has been the increased isolation of older people, not just from the community but also from family members.

Over the past two weeks, they have enjoyed the activities of flower arranging, painting, tabletop games and Bingo with clients and they are gaining in confidence in speaking to the older people and leading activities. This is an on-going project which we hope will benefit everyone involved – older people will have an increased sense of self-worth and feeling valued and will develop friendships with younger people and younger people will have a positive experience from sharing time and experiences with older people as well as the fun, enjoyment and personal reward of being part of this project.

This is a two-way issue as grandchildren have had limited contact with grandparents and vice versa, and both have missed the benefits: the life experience of the elderly for the young, and new ways of doing things for those who are older. At Age Concern North Norfolk we have recently started a series of new projects involving pupils from Gresham’s School in Holt, building on the links we have made previously.

Initially, six young people and their teachers came to the centre and helped to improve the premises by painting the outside fences and seating; then they completed a Dementia Awareness session before meeting the clients in the centre.

Horatio Nelson – One of Norfolk’s Finest

Then there was communication using a system of hand-held flags. Cool dudes did it like The Village People. While waiting anxiously for the command to engage the enemy, naval captains would be perplexed to receive the message:” YMCA”. Perhaps that is why some ships preferred to hoist the flags on their masts?!

Horatio Nelson was born in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk in 1758 and destined to become a national hero and one of the country’s greatest naval commanders. At Christmas his friends would get an orange or set of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Greatest Hits, while young Horatio received a gift box entitled “Ahoy There Junior Admiral’s Kit.”

As 99 per cent of naval time was spent waiting around, you can bet signallers had occasions to use them for their own ends; “Please knit me more socks, Mum”, “Anyone seen my right leg? Reward offered.”

Containing string with Chinese instructions on ropemaking, wooden sword, a pair of sew-on epaulettes and an eye patch, he was the envy of the playground. Mums and Dads waiting at the school gate would cast an approving eye at the young Horatio saying: “That boy, he be destined for big things.” And they weren’t wrong.

Anyway, I digress… Nelson decided early on his career lay on the open seas. At 14 he bought some heated underpants and enlisted in an expedition to the Arctic. He went on to join the Royal Navy, learning all the ropes, mastering sails, gunnery, naval warfare tactics and saluting with the palm of the hand facing downwards (unlike those landlubbers in the army).

Not for Horatio crabbing or sitting on the beach with knotted handkerchief on his head.

His ambitions and dreams lay in the wide blue yonder.

But naval life in those days was as an exacting task given that the ships were wind-driven.

Calls to “hoist the mainbrace” were often followed by cries of “Hold yew hard boys”, take ‘em down again quick”.

Given how fast wind directions can change and storms blow up at sea there was always the fear that a 64-gun man o’ war could be turned by a sudden gust and find itself firing broadsides at its own fleet. (HMS Victory had 104 making it doubly dangerous).

Nelson’s rise in the navy began when, at only 20, he was given the captaincy of a Frigate.

He tasted action in Nicaragua but was lucky to avoid yellow fever which wiped out much of his militia. He wasn’t so lucky in Corsica where a stray bullet took out his right eye.

The battle of St Vincent in 1797 was a turning point. His decisive actions led to a knighthood and promotion. But all was not plain sailing (excuse the pun). He lost an arm during an assault on Tenerife.

A series of engagements saw him enhance his reputation as a brave and inspirational leader and wily tactician, resulting in his promotion to Vice Admiral. Victory over the French in the battle of The Nile was rewarded with the title Lord Nelson. Along with all that glamour he also acquired a mistress, Emma Hamilton.

Nelson’s final hurrah came at Trafalgar in October 1805, when, he led his fleet in a successful engagement with the FrancoSpanish navy as it left port. Nelson was on deck aboard HMS Victory when he was felled by a sniper’s bullet. On his deathbed he turned to the ship’s captain and said:” Kiss me Hardy.” Hardy kissed him on the cheek. Are we sure? Well, three surviving eyewitnesses affirm it and said he kept repeating the request until unable to speak.

Did Nelson have a sense of humour? We will never know. But if he had, he would have been looking down from his column and having a laugh when on December 21, 1954, he found himself in the Goon Show.

In this episode of the BBC Radio comedy classic Nelson complained about plans to get rid of London smog. “When the weather is really foggy, you see, it is the only chance we statues have to move around and see the sights.” It took the Clean Air Act to nail Nelson to his column for ever.

A Local Legend - One you won’t want to miss Like all young people she fell in love and her nights and days were full of dreams of love-filled tomorrows. A gentle heart filled with whole-hearted, innocent love is a tender and precious flower.

So, it was with Bessy as she was called. It is a tender and touching tale and it is one that will appeal to men and women of all ages who love a good yarn.

Some of us know the story of a young lady whose life was blighted by a love affair back in the nineteenth century.

Now Geoffrey Dixon has brought the story of Old Bessy to life in this new book. The names have been changed out of respect for the original characters, but a thread of truth runs through its pages. It is based on a true story but one in which significant details have been lost in the mist of years. Knowing that the story is true lends it a poignancy and we will find ourselves accompanying Bessy as we turn the pages.

Elizabeth Bray was the daughter of a farmer in the North Norfolk of the eighteen fifties. Like so many girls and boys of the time, life was spent in the small world of the village where there was little opportunity for development or adventure.

Its pages feature many villages and towns with which we are familiar and were truly known by Bessy.

It is a story that grips the imagination, and it is one that anyone who reads it will find unforgettable. Although we read of Bessy’s days in a different age we share her feelings and they are emotions to which we are all, whether male or female, subject to at some time. And what happened to Bessy is maybe something that has happened to us. The emotions felt by people of a different age are felt by us as well, and that is why young and old will relish the story of Old Bessy. It is one of those stories that that tug at the heart strings and linger in the memory.

She was beautiful and spirited and the apple of her parents’ eyes.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Since our last article Edna, an older cat who came in as a stray and was in very poor condition, has left for her new home. We have also re-homed the two lovely cats Flokey and Norbet, who joined us via Westover Vets. Kittens, Kia, Nakita, Marley, Hollie, Chloe, Honey, Paddington, Pukki and Pudsey, have also left for their new homes, plus the two little kittens mentioned last time.

Marley and Koko, the special little kittens, have been adopted by Julie who was already caring for them. They are the first kittens we have ever seen with dwarfism (caused by a rare genetic defect) and it has been a big learning curve for us all. Fortunately, we were able to discuss the condition with another branch of Cats Protection who had their own little dwarf kitten in 2020.

The kittens came into care last May at 4 weeks old, with their litter mates, who were normal sized. Their owner had contacted Stephanie because he could not look after the kittens as their mother had disappeared. Because they were so much smaller than their siblings, we thought at first that they were from another litter as they were not exhibiting normal behaviour for 4-week-old kittens. However, after a visit to the vets with a health problem for Koko, we were advised they were indeed dwarfs. Their development continued to lag behind that of their littermates who were both rehomed after receiving their first vaccination. Because they have such very short legs, but normal sized bodies, they struggled to become mobile; hard to believe when you see how quickly they can move now. They have both had some serious health issues requiring visits to Westover and even an overnight stay for Koko in June as she needed to go on a drip and for Marley at the end of last year when he became constipated. As a consequence of the extra care they need, Julie had become so fond of them she could not bear to part with them, so they have now taken up permanent residence with her.

and is now on medication for this.

We do not know what the future holds for these kittens, but we know that Julie is extra vigilant and is ensuring they have the very best life possible. Koko is the more active of the two and loves to play. Marble meanwhile has got one up on his sister as he has managed to climb and can usually be found curled up on the sofa when Julie returns from work. They are very gentle little kittens and also very cuddly.

Cllr. Bütikofer to Resign as Leader of the Council At a recent Cabinet meeting, Cllr Sarah Bütikofer advised that she intends to resign as Leader of the District Council for personal reasons and will step down as soon as a new leader can be elected.

As has previously been reported, Cllr Bütikofer suffered two close family bereavements in the last year and has also now confirmed that her husband and fellow North Norfolk District Councillor Pierre Bütikofer is battling a serious medical condition.

the Leader’s role hasn’t been easy, but things such as family and personal health and well-being are more important than any public role and on behalf of officer and member colleagues, we offer Sarah and Pierre our support, thoughts and best wishes in the weeks and months ahead.”

Cllr Bütikofer will continue to serve as Leader while the Liberal Democrat Group takes forward their internal Group processes to elect a new Group Leader. There will then be a vote at a future meeting of Full Council to confirm appointment of the new Leader of the Council.

At this time, it is expected that this meeting will be at a date in early February.

Stroke Support Group Plans for 2022

Sheringham Stroke Support Group, covering most of North Norfolk from Wells to Waxham and the hinterland from Fakenham to Stalham starts meeting again at the beginning of March.

We are an affiliated member of the Stroke Association which is the only UK Charity concerned with helping everyone affected by stroke. Their website is stroke.org.uk They supply free help books on almost every subject concerned with stroke and work closely with local groups.

We are an independent self-financing group who are calling all stroke survivors and their carers in North Norfolk who would enjoy a social afternoon twice a month. We meet at 2.15pm for a 2.30pm start and finish at approx. 3.45pm at St Andrews Methodist Church Hall in Sheringham on the Cromer Road next to Tesco NR26 8SA.

Our last meeting of the September to December 2021 term was spent together having a festive Christmas lunch at the Cliftonville Hotel.

We restart our meetings on March 2nd with a social afternoon and then continue fortnightly until June 2022. New & current members & carers will receive a warm welcome and enjoy a full programme which includes speakers, social afternoons, music, poetry, slide shows etc and in the warmer weather we usually go out for afternoon tea.

After the meeting we have a cuppa, chat & a fun raffle encouraging members to bring a small item, then each member gets a prize to take home.

Due to Covid19 it is recommended to wear a mask, if possible, for peace of mind & the chairs are spaced apart in the hall which has good access. There is a large car park & disabled facilities are available for wheelchair users inside the building.

There is a nominal charge for each term of £10 & carers are free.

Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant

The Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant (OHLG) is now live and North Norfolk District Council’s Revenues service has contacted all eligible businesses by email or letter inviting them to apply.

In response to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, the Government announced before Christmas that grants of up to £6,000 would be made available to hospitality and leisure businesses.

The £8 million paid to North Norfolk District Council to distribute is the largest single allocation to a Norfolk authority and is based on the District having over 3,000 hospitality, leisure and accommodation businesses, who continue to be hit hard by the economic impacts of Covid.

The allocation comes from a national support package of £1bn, with North Norfolk District Council receiving over £8m to distribute to eligible businesses.

Government guidance is available on what businesses will be eligible for support and how much funding each business will receive based on the rateable value of the property occupied.

Businesses operating in the Hospitality, Leisure and Accommodation industry will be able to apply for grants of up to £6,000, depending on

their rateable value.

Please read what evidence is needed before going online to apply as only applications with the requested evidence will be assessed by the cut-off date of 25 February 2022.

“Businesses in North Norfolk have been critically hit by the impact of COVID and have shown resilience in their measures taken to counter the spread of the virus, and in adapting their businesses to protect their public.

These grants will be vital for our business community and over the coming months, we will continue to monitor the situation in North Norfolk to see if we need to ask for additional funding”

NNDC has also received over £178,000 in discretionary Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) top-up funding for other businesses affected

by Omicron, for example venues, sole traders, wedding support companies and others.

One of the UK’s largest residetial developers axes ground rent increases Leases are granted over properties and exist for a finite period of time. Once this period comes to an end, the property reverts to the freehold owner.

When an individual purchases a lease, they do so subject to certain conditions, such as that they will pay ground rent periodically and that they will acquire the freeholder's consent if they wish to sell the lease.

An issue which has arisen in recent years is that developers have begun including provisions thereby enabling them to double ground rent periodically, which makes leases both difficult to sell and mortgage.

In May of this year the Leasehold Reform (Ground Rent) Bill was introduced to Parliament and further to this, in September the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched enforcement action against developers including Taylor Wimpey, Countryside, Barratt Developments and Persimmon Homes for "possible unfair contract terms" relating to ground rent.

Taylor Wimpey have now voluntarily committed to remove any such unfair terms from their existing leasehold contracts and to exclude these terms from new contracts.

The effect of this is that ground rent will now be set at the rate it was when the property was sold and will not rise over time.

Countryside Properties has voluntarily removed the terms from their contracts and Aviva who purchased freeholds from

developers also agreed to remove ground rent terms that were considered unfair.

We wait to see if other developers will follow Taylor Wimpey without further intervention from the CMA and the outcome of the ongoing investigation in Barratt Development.

Parkinson’s UK

In common with many people, the end of 2020 (and subsequently 2021) couldn’t come soon enough for people affected by Parkinson’s in North Norfolk. The pandemic has led to many leading isolated lives even if they have tried to stay in touch via social media and online meetings. And so, with the courage of triple vaccinations, combined with sensible precautions, we have ambitious plans for the re-launch of our support activities in North Norfolk which will be bigger and more imaginative than ever before. And we invite anyone, however affected by Parkinson’s to join us.

Our mission is to provide friendship, encourage healthy living and to deal directly with some of the common challenges presented by Parkinson’s.

And we meet literally every Tuesday morning either in person or online (sometimes both).

The first Tuesday of the month will find us “chatting” online with an opportunity for anyone to join us for social interaction. For anyone struggling to get connected, we can

walk you through a simple zoom tutorial and even loan a free of charge tablet, thanks to the generosity of the Norwich Community Foundation.

Keeping your pet smiling!

We all know dental check ups are essential for our children and ourselves but what about our pets? Dental disease can affect all species and is regularly seen in cats and dogs over three years old.

Initially invisible plaque causes gum reddening (gingivitis) which progresses to mineralised brown tartar (calculus) that frequently requires dental scaling. Caught early gingivitis can be reversed, however, over time it progresses to periodontitis with tooth loss and infections of the tooth, gum and jaw bone, with a risk of infection spreading to other organs via the bloodstream.

Dental disease in cats poses particular challenges as they also suffer from chronic gingivostomatitis, a disease where inflammation spreads from the gums to the rest of the mouth. In this condition the body mounts an over-exaggerated immune response to tartar and plaque causing painful inflammation. Treatment is complex and may involve tooth removal, antibiotics and immunosuppression, and should be

discussed with your vet.

Similarly, Feline Resorptive Lesions affect large numbers of cats. These lesions erode the area between the tooth crown (above gum) and root (below gum) causing teeth to fracture.

When detected early dental disease can often be treated with brushing, however, as disease progresses treatment requires antibiotics, scale and polishing and even extractions. Not all dental treatments are the same and dental treatment should involve a thorough examination under general anaesthesia where every tooth is examined visually and with a special probe.

Dental X-rays should be performed to assess the extent of disease below the gum line in the root / socket area as this is invisible to the naked eye. These investigations determine the

Worse Things Happen at Sea

“Mayday Mayday Mayday, this is Humber Coastguard.

We are receiving a “man overboard” distress call from an automated device”.

if they can see anything going on.

Most days nothing untoward happens beyond walkers asking about tide times and beach access, or perhaps about a distressed seal.

Check the clock. Note the time. Jot down the details. Humber is the Coastguard station to which we report. The distress call is coming from 25 miles away, but we never know when someone else’s incident is going to expand into our 15-mile radius of responsibility.

There are around thirteen incidents a year in “our patch”, roughly one every four weeks.

We log and monitor all the big commercial ships that pass, but our main focus is on more vulnerable craft and people: local crab boats, pleasure craft, dive boats, paddleboarders, walkers, joggers, hangliders and so on.

The radio fires up again to announce there are now two further distress calls from two more sources in the same area, and I can hear the Coastguard asking particular ships in the area

Occasionally a dog falls half-way down the cliff and needs rescuing, a dive boat is unable to contact HMCG (we can relay their messages) or we check with the beach lifeguards that they still have sight of a child’s inflatable. Sometimes a hanglider crashes, a walker has a heart attack, or a desperate soul sees the 175 feet high cliffs as an answer. We’re here to help if we can.

It’s a great “job”. In winter the seas can be spectacular, recently reducing a, thankfully unoccupied, sloop to matchwood on the beach just below the station. In summer, with visibility through telescopes to windfarms and gas platforms up to thirty miles away, blue sky, blue sea, and little steam trains chugging their way across the beautiful Norfolk landscape, it can feel like heaven on earth.

Training takes about 6 weeks of weekly three-hour sessions plus some self-study.

Coastwatch is interesting, worthwhile and fun: there’s plenty of tech for techies, some numbers for crunchers, occasionally walkers who want to chat (covid permitting), but mostly, if you enjoy sole personal responsibility (managers are only a phone call away) of being a Watchkeeper high on the cliffs watching the sea and helping Coastguards keep people safe: Coastwatch is for you. We always welcome new volunteers. Minimum commitment is a four-hour watch per week.

When we first started doing dermal filler treatments the emphasis was on filling lines and wrinkles, we saw with interest as gradually we began to understand how our face ages and deflate with time. Quick Curry

Are you trying to cut down on calories in a New Year health drive or just looking for a quick replacement for a take-away? This recipe fills the brief on both counts. Ready in about 20 minutes, adaptable and tasty. It also improves on keeping in the fridge for a day or two to develop the flavours. This recipe serves two but is easily doubled.

Ingredients 250g boneless chicken, cut into 2cm cubes/Quorn pieces 1 large red onion, thinly sliced into half moons 1 tbl spoon sunflower oil 2 tsps garlic and ginger paste (I use Tesco’s own) 2 tsps chilli paste from a jar

I can chopped tomatoes 2 tsps garam masala 3 tbl spoons fat free natural yogurt Chopped coriander (optional)

Method Heat the oil in a large pan, add the onion and gently fry until soft and translucent. Add the garlic and ginger paste and chilli paste and fry for a further I minute. Add the tomatoes and about 100mls of water, bring to a simmer and cook for 2 minutes. Add the chicken and sprinkle over the garam masala, mix well.

Cover and cook for about 6-8 minutes (check the chicken is cooked through). Take off the heat then stir in the yogurt, sprinkle with the fresh coriander if using.

Serve immediately with boiled rice, cauli rice or warm naan bread.

Fast and Fabulous Food!

Why is it that we crave the kinds of foods that are so bad for us? And while we’re at it, why MUST food be fast?

We have never had so much variety and abundance, yet many of us fill our bellies with substances that provide us with little nutritional value and a whole heap of chemicals that our bodies struggle to process; little wonder that we fall ill.

Surely mealtimes should be long leisurely events to savour and enjoy? Yet we have been conditioned by the food industry to crave instant fast foodstuffs such as burgers, and who doesn’t enjoy a big, juicy quarter pounder jam packed with pickle, cheese, ketchup, mustard, mayo, fried onions and salad? (My mouth is literally watering as I type this!) So, the only way forward is to make your own at home....admittedly this takes me a little longer than driving to a takeaway, but I know exactly what's in it and feel no guilt after devouring it!

The following recipe has been tweaked over many years to become the spectacular outcome it now is. You will also notice that it contains no meat or dairy –helpful for those of you who are vegetarian or vegan, but also a great addition to any recipe repertoire to enable us to get more veggies, nutrients and fibre into us. Don’t be put off by Tofu; it is a great and affordable protein source, and if you use the Tofoo brand which is already pressed to

remove excess water, it is very easy to use and tastes delicious.

The result is the juiciest, most flavour filled burger you could want, loaded with goodness and no nasties. If you wedge some baking potatoes and toss them in a little olive oil and roast for around half an hour, you have a mega feast to be proud of, rather than a takeaway to regret.

Beautiful Big Burgers (Tofoo Style)

Remove from the heat and stir in the beetroot and miso and enough oats and flour to bind it all together, ensuring you have mixed it all in well, and form first into a firm ball, and then flatten into a burger pattie, smoothing out the edges (if the mix feels a little dry add another splash of tamari and a little splash of olive oil.)

Olive oil 1 pack smoked Tofoo patted dry and grated 1 very large flat mushroom, finely chopped 1 onion, finely chopped 2 tsp Smoked paprika 1 flat tsp Garlic salt Good splash Tamari or Soy sauce Splash balsamic vinegar 1 vacuum packed cooked beetroot, grated Tsp Brown miso paste, mixed with a little warm water 1 to 2 tblsp porridge oats 1 tblsp chickpea flour

Gently fry the onion in a little olive oil for a few minutes or until pale and soft, then add the mushrooms and Tofoo, stirring for a few minutes.

Place on an oiled baking tray and put in the fridge to firm up for at least an hour (you can make these well ahead of time and keep in the fridge for up to a day if you cling film the top)

When ready to cook, place in a preheated oven on 180 degrees for about half hour, checking after 20 mins-they should be heated right through and just starting to brown.

Add the paprika and garlic salt and the splashes of vinegars and stir to combine.

Final Public Consultation to begin on Emerging Local Plan

A final round of public consultation on a new Local Plan for North Norfolk will begin on Monday 17 January and run until Monday 28 February.

In response to receiving over 900 responses, the Draft Local Plan has been revised to incorporate a stronger climate resilience theme. The Plan introduces higher standards of environmental sustainability through new development including new energy efficiency standards, greater use of renewable energy, water use reduction measures, as well as higher standards of building design and measures to protect wildlife.

Residents, businesses and organisations are now invited to consider the content of the revised document and to outline what changes may be necessary before the Plan is submitted to government for independent examination. The examiners will consider all responses made to this consultation.

The Council will also publish a number of supporting evidence documents which have informed the preparation of the Plan.

Can I give up or amend my Inheritance after someone has died?

Whilst the specific terms of any will are up to the individual who makes it, after they have died there may be circumstances in which a beneficiary does not wish to receive their inheritance or wishes to pass all or part of it to somebody else. Beneficiaries are not obligated to accept their inheritance, whether received under the terms of a will or under the rules of Intestacy.

Variation

A beneficiary could choose to ‘vary’ all or part of their interest in an estate to another individual(s). This allows the ‘original’ beneficiary to choose the ultimate recipient of their ‘unwanted’ inheritance.

For example, an estate may have been distributed equally between the deceased’s two children, however, following the death, it may be the case that one child is financially independent and they may be content to forgo their own share in the estate (or part of it) to benefit their child(ren).

There may be good tax planning reasons to adopt this approach.

Where the deceased did not leave a valid will, then their estate would be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy rules, which

provide a hierarchy of relatives entitled to inherit from the estate. However, these rules do not make provision for unmarried partners (irrespective of the duration of the relationship) and, therefore, those relatives entitled to benefit may wish to vary the distribution of the estate to provide for the deceased’s partner to benefit to some degree.

Disclaimer

Alternatively, the beneficiary could ‘disclaim’ their inheritance, however, they must typically disclaim any inheritance in its entirety (unless the will provides otherwise).

For example, if a beneficiary receives a cash gift (legacy) of £10,000 and also a share in the residuary estate under a Will, they may be in a position to elect to disclaim the cash gift, whilst taking the share in the residue.

Typically, the disclaimed asset(s) would be distributed as though the original beneficiary had died before the deceased and the original beneficiary would have limited control as to the ultimate recipient.

How to vary or disclaim your Inheritance To vary or disclaim your inheritance, a beneficiary must sign a Deed of

Variation/Disclaimer. Further, the variation/disclaimer must be signed within two years of the deceased’s death to have retrospective effect for Inheritance Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax purposes.

North Norfolk Photographic Society North Norfolk Photographic Society’s latest competition gave members the challenge of producing a ‘panel’ of five images based on any chosen topic. The entries were varied and portrayed members’ wide interests in subject matter and demonstrated all aspects of their photographic skills.

In a photographic ‘panel’ competition, not only do the images have to be excellent individually, but they also must relate to one another and to be arranged (as a panel) in an interesting and attractive way.

The judge for the evening was Andy Swain who has visited the club previously; he was very thorough and Bird Relationships by Mick Walker viewed both the individual images and the overall effect of the chosen panel before giving awards. The evening gave members the opportunity to view the range of images as well as to receive useful tips detailing how to plan and improve a panel of chosen photographs.

Norfolk’s 2022 Rapid-play Chess Championship

Fifty-six chess players from Norfolk and beyond recently took part in a Rapid-play Congress, held at Horstead Tithe Barn. Players were given just 20 minutes and an additional 10 seconds per move to complete all their moves in each of their six games. The event required considerable stamina as well as chess prowess.

Christmas drink and drug driving campaign results Police in Norfolk made 161 arrests during the annual Christmas campaign highlighting the dangers of driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs.

The message of the campaign was ‘No Excuse’ and involved officers carrying-out roadside checks throughout the day and night, as well as intelligence-led enforcement activity.

A total of 868 motorists were stopped or dealt with by officers in Norfolk, 19% of whom were arrested as follows:

85 on suspicion of drink-driving (768 people breathalysed in total, with 683 providing negative tests) 51 on suspicion of drug-driving (75 people tested in total, with 24 providing negative tests)

In addition, nine people were arrested for failing to provide a specimen; and 16 people were arrested for being unfit through drink or drugs Of all the people who failed a test, 79% were male and 19% were under the age of 25-years- old.

Chief Inspector Jon Chapman, of the Joint Roads & Armed Policing Team, said: “Driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs is one of the ‘Fatal Four’ offences, which makes you more likely to be involved in either a serious or fatal collision – alongside speeding, driving whilst using a mobile phone and driving without wearing a seatbelt.

Sheringham Councillor Memorialised at The Reef

The community rooms commemorating long-standing Sheringham Councillor, Brian Hannah, have been opened in a ceremony attended by his family.

The Brian Hannah Community Rooms were opened by his wife, Bev, and his grandchildren on Sunday, who were also given a tour of the facility and use of the gym or pool.

Cllr. Hannah was a District Councillor from 1997 until 2019, before his passing in January 2020; he was a big proponent of developing a new leisure centre for Sheringham, and was involved in the project’s conception, nearly 10 years ago.

Leader of the Council, Sarah Bütikofer said:

"I am delighted that the Council have been able to Bev Hannah and grandchildren opening pay tribute to Brian in this The Brian Hannah Community Rooms way. He was a long serving Councillor who gave so much of himself to the local community he served, and it is very fitting that his memory can live on within the community he loved."

News from the Club house The clubhouse continues to be open for members to contest league and cup games on the short mat every Wednesday at 2.00pm through the winter months until April. Games, a drink and biscuits for just £1.50.

All present playing and social members are welcome, new members are also very welcome. We regularly get more than a dozen playing but no one can knock Bob A off the top of the league, although Janice A and Keith P are trying! The ladies are on a roll, though, with Gay B producing her best bowls, Jackie P is back to her bouncing best and Jean N has found a set of bowls to suit her game. Watch out gentlemen!

This season, 2022, the club will compete in the Mens NBA league,

the mixed Federation league and the mixed NANSA league along with cup competitions. So far, we have 9 friendly matches with clubs from as far afield as Southampton and Newark already confirmed, with more games pencilled in with teams from within the county and locally.

A busy season looks on the cards on a green which is already looking wonderful. Put the date in your diary, 9th April, start playing bowls at Cromer Marrams on the Runton Road.

The bar continues to be open on Fridays from 7pm for members and visitors. Drinks at club prices!

Bright Future Ahead for Seaside Golf Club A young golfer is making his debut as a club professional at a course in his native North Norfolk.

Charlie Bright has been announced as the new pro at Mundesley Golf Club and will take up his role this month when current professional Ryan Pudney moves to Sheringham as part of the professional team, specialising in coaching.

Cromer man Charlie, 30, first took up the sport as a 12-year-old schoolboy, after trying putting in the garden of his grandad John Laidlow who told him he had a natural eye for the game.

The youngster rocketed through the rankings – playing for Norfolk juniors, seniors and slicing his handicap to scratch by the time he was 16. Aged 20, he decided to make it a career and after spells as assistant pro at Sheringham, where he gained his PGA qualifications, and coaching at Royal Norwich, he is delighted to be given his first full pro role at a local club.

Charlie said: “Mundesley is such a friendly, family club which has made major strides in recent years, so I am looking forward to helping maintain and retain that growth, assist members improve their game, and guide them on the best equipment to help them do that via our new expanded club shop.”

On Sunday 9th January 2022, Holt Woodlands Archery and Airgun Club, Holt, Norfolk was host to members of the Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club, Cromer. The proprietor, Jonathan Hancock was presented with an AFVBC Certificate of Appreciation plus an AFVBC Shield and named as honoured amongst our local Veterans. The certificate was presented by Holt resident and local Veterans’ Chaplain, Bishop Dr John Mills RN and the shield by the Right Honourable Duncan Baker, Member of Parliament for North Norfolk.

One of the main issues for Veterans today is their mental health and PTSD with increasing levels of suicide amongst veterans. Sadly, more veterans die of suicide than they do in combat and therefore, the ethos of the club is mutual support, advising and supporting on welfare issues or just providing an arm around

As a player who started the game young, when he enjoyed “hitting the ball high and long” he is also keen to encourage the club’s very promising junior section.

Charlie’s family are well known in the area – with parents Mark and Maxine running Café Main in the town’s Church Street, with help from elder son Greg. Mark also spent 30 years working with the Cromer Crab Company and Maxine is a former town carnival queen.

Mundesley club chairman Andrew Keates said: “Charlie’s experience as an aspiring junior at Royal Cromer, followed by nine years as an assistant at Sheringham makes him a perfect fit for a members’ club like Mundesley.

“A qualified PGA golf professional, who is popular and unassuming, he is committed to helping golfers of all standards feel at ease and get the most out of their game. It is the perfect opportunity for Charlie to lead the club to greater things while providing a warm welcome to members and visitors.

“We are sad to be losing Ryan who has been an outstanding head professional who had been at the heart of the renaissance of our club, but wish him all the very best at Sheringham.”

Current pro Ryan Pudney has had two spells at the club as operations manager from 2010 to 2017 and returned as pro in 2018 later becoming director of golf. He added: “I have had two very enjoyable spells at Mundesley working with a proactive board to drive the club forward.

I’m delighted for Charlie to be given the opportunity and wish him every success in the role.”

Suffice it to say that Jonathan is a great guy who has gone out of his way to help, and he was made an honorary member of the Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club.
