Crew members from RNLI Cromer arrived at a carpark to be given chocolates for themselves and selection boxes for their families.

Derek Hinds - Chairman at RNLI Cromer and Jim Page - Treasurer at the station met crew members to pass on the goodies. Both followed the COVID guidelines.

Jim said, ‘We appreciate all the efforts our crew have gone through in this unprecedented year. They have continued training, both on our lifeboats and online and also ensured that they are available for anyone who needs their help. Families of RNLi volunteers are often forgotten and this was to say thank you to all of them.

The average cost of a helicopter mission is ÂŁ3,500 and EAAA needs to raise in the region of 13 million each year to deliver and develop its vital service.

30,000 Mission Milestone for Air Ambulance East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has revealed that its helicopter emergency medical service has been tasked 30,000 times since the charity was established 20 years ago. Although not something to celebrate, as each tasking represents someone who’s life was in danger, this is a significant milestone for the charity, which covers the region by helicopter

and rapid response vehicle (RRV).

EAAA operates 365 days year, 24/7 by RRV, and is almost completely funded by the generosity of people across East Anglia. Its critical care teams, stationed at Norwich and Cambridge, provide emergency cover across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Norfolk, taking the A&E department to the roadside or bedside of those in a time-critical, life-changing situation, where every second counts.

In 2021, EAAA is aiming to start flying 24/7, becoming the first air ambulance in the East of England to do so, and estimates this will enable the charity to help hundreds more patients a year. The on-going effects of Covid-19 on the charity’s fundraising income are as yet unknown, however EAAA are expecting a shortfall in fundraising income next year and urge you to support them in any way that you can, in order to keep its life-saving crews operational and yellow helicopters flying.

On average, EAAA is tasked more than 2,500 times a year and has flown 5,000 missions since January 2019, when the 25,000th mission was flown. The majority of its call outs are to cardiac arrest patients and road traffic collisions.

The charity has continued to operate throughout the pandemic, only missing two clinical shifts to-date due to Covid-19 related reasons and has also been able to support local hospitals in managing intensive care capacity. The EAAA teams are highly skilled at transferring critically ill patients, by air or road ambulance, and are currently on call to transfer patients between intensive care units, to help hospitals in the fight against Covid-19. In 2020 so far, EAAA has been tasked 1,328 times by helicopter, 1,061 times by rapid response vehicle, helped 1,603 patients,

News from the Norfolk Coast Partnership - New farm scheme

Another year, another lockdown. Covid is certainly making its presence felt. Even here where we have had relatively low numbers of cases, incidence is rising rapidly. There is, however, hope of a corner being turned with the roll out of the new vaccines. Now is the time to dig in and keep our resolve. Never has ‘Hands – Face – Space’ been more important, until we get the pandemic under control.

The Environmental Land Management scheme (ELM) is a new grant system for farmers which will in time replace Countryside Stewardship.

This means that farmers will not be paid according to how much land they own but for delivering beneficial outcomes including: clean air and water, thriving plants and wildlife, protection from environmental hazards, and enhanced beauty in our landscapes. Heritage, engagement with the landscape, and reduction and adaptation to climate change are also important elements as we look to the future.

How are your New Year resolutions going? A Bristol University study showed that 88% of us fail to keep our resolutions, no surprise there, especially if we are staying home with the fridge calling your name constantly. But now is perhaps the time to take up that hobby you always wanted to try or study those seed catalogues to have that garden display even better than last year. Whatever floats your boat, why not try something different this year, maybe join an online group, make new friends in the process. If the last year has taught us anything, it is the importance of making and keeping up connections and finding different ways to use our time and interact with others.

This is great news for the environment and for farmers who will be more supported financially to deliver benefits. The schemes will start in 2024 and protected landscapes including AONBs will begin to engage with farmers to support their participation in the ELM scheme from early next year.

Whatever you are doing in this New Year may it be better than the last. Enjoy your January magazine.

We’ve already been in discussions with Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB and the Broads National Park over possible collaboration work here in East Anglia.

The forest school, set up in the Green Flag Award winning Holt Country Park, is already fully subscribed with a view to expand.

I would be most grateful if you could publish my thanks to all those who took part in the Christmas Tree Raffle, which was held at Overstrand Garden Centre. Thanks to Sam and his team, they raised a fantastic £535 for Cromer RNLI!

Forest schools are child-centred outdoor learning programmes set in a natural environment, exploring early years learning through play, social interaction and exploration.

The ethos of forest schooling seeks to explore the young child’s learning and development holistically, rather than academically.

The nature of forests and woodlands such as Holt Country Park, means that the children can explore the natural surroundings, taking in all the wildlife and learning about the environments they live in, whilst learning vital social skills outside the conventional classroom setting.

Attached is a photograph of Sam presenting the cheque to Beryl Mansell, Chairman, Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild. I am also in the photograph, in my role as Secretary of Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild.

Davina and Diana, two of the founders of Wild By Nature, grew up in Holt and spent their childhood years exploring the woodlands they now teach children in.

The steps to take if you or any member of your household display Covid 19 symptoms are simple and can be key in preventing infections being spread.

If you are symptomatic you must isolate as soon as you notice symptoms and to have no face to face contact with anyone outside of your household.

It is important to do this straight away, and for everyone in the household to isolate as they could also be infectious even without symptoms.

As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/ coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next.

WE CAN DO THIS! is the message being sent to communities across Norfolk on the last day of 2020 as residents are reminded that staying at home is now more important than ever to support local NHS services facing significant challenges.

With Covid-19 spreading fast and cases at record levels both in Norfolk and across the country, the Norfolk Resilience Forum (NRF) is urging residents to continue playing their part in following the Lockdown rules in order to ease the pressure on local health services. The NRF, which is the multi-agency group comprising Norfolk’s local authorities, police, health and supporting agencies, is urging everyone to stay safely at home with their own household or support bubble and wherever possible don’t travel outside your local area.

Cllr Andrew Proctor, Chair of the Norfolk Covid-19 Engagement Board and Leader of Norfolk County Council said: “I speak for myself and all the other Norfolk leaders on the Engagement Board in saying there is no doubt that 2020 has been a really difficult year but we can look to 2021 with hope. With the announcement of a second vaccine being approved and vaccination programmes already underway in Norfolk, there is much to be optimistic about. But we must not be complacent, we are not out of the woods yet. I hope the people of Norfolk will be able to look back over the last year with pride at how they have coped and come together to help others. So many individuals, organisations and businesses have made sacrifices and faced

making sure we all play our part to protect everyone around us. We all have friends and family that we want to keep safe – whether that’s parents, elderly grandparents, and even our children. And we need everyone to play their part to help us do that. We all have to work together to keep each other safe.”

Cath Byford, Chief Nurse with NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Our call to everyone is, if you have coronavirus symptoms then self-isolate, get a test and help us track down people you have been in contact with. It’s one way that together we can beat this virus.”

“Where breaches are reported to the police, we will consider the information provided to us and attend where necessary. As we have said before, we will continue to follow the four Es approach and will engage, educate and explain the regulations to people, however, blatant disregard for the regulations will not be tolerated and when required we will enforce the legislation.

Norfolk’s Director of Public Health, Dr Louise Smith said: “With the new vaccines there is hope on the horizon. But infection rates are at unprecedented levels in Norfolk, as they are across the country. There is growing demand in our three acute hospitals and across the county’s social care settings. The increasing number of cases is across all ages and we know around one in three people who have Covid-19 don’t have any symptoms, but can still pass it on. So, the steps we take now are critical.

If you're told to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace or the NHS COVID-19 app: ▪ Self-isolate for 10 days from when you were last in contact with the person who tested positive for coronavirus ▪ Do not leave your home for any reason – if you need food or medicine, order it online or by phone, or ask friends and family to drop it off at your home ▪ Do not have visitors in your home, including friends and family – except for essential care ▪ Try to avoid contact with anyone you live with as much as possible ▪ Any people you live with and any people in your support bubble do not need to selfisolate if you do not have symptoms ▪ If you live with someone at higher risk from coronavirus, try to arrange for them to stay with friends or family while you're selfisolating. ▪ If you have to stay in the same home together, read about how to avoid spreading coronavirus to people you live with.

The key advice remains ‘hands, face, space’ – washing your hands regularly, covering your face in enclosed spaces and social distancing from anyone you do not live with or who isn’t in your support bubble is vital. If you have any of the coronavirus symptoms you must self-isolate straightway and get a test. You must continue to isolate if you test positive or are told to isolate by NHS Test and Trace.

Dr Anoop Dhesi, a practicing GP at Staithe Surgery in Stalham and Clinical Chair for NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said: “We have seen an amazing effort from all those involved in rolling out the vaccine - both our NHS staff and community volunteers. But please be patient and wait until you are contacted to come for your vaccination – do not phone or turn up at your GP practice or local hospital as they can only provide the vaccination by appointment.

“Coronavirus infection rates and hospital admissions are now higher than they were in the first wave. We are asking everyone to follow the Lockdown guidance and stay well by continuing to wash our hands, cover our face, and keep two metres apart. This is crucial to avoid more hospital admissions and losing more lives to this virus.

“If you have an urgent medical need but are unsure what to do, please call 111 first. They can signpost you to the most appropriate service, and can even make an appointment for you if you need to be seen urgently.”

Council Staff Volunteers Plant Over 2000 Trees Environmental Health, Leisure, Economic staff, and this project is in December

North Norfolk District Council volunteers have planted 2,200 trees over various tree planting events in December

Council staff are given two days of voluntary time each year that they can take for the purpose of assisting in community projects benefitting North Norfolk.

Development and Housing teams used their voluntary time to plant trees in North Norfolk woodlands, with a combined aim of improving the diversity and strengthening the habitat in the woodlands and working towards the Council’s green initiatives.

The green fingered volunteers traded in their computers for shovels for a day and took to Holt Country Park and Warren Woods in Cromer to plant a variance of Hawthorne, Hazel, Leaf Lime, Oak, Crab apple, Beech, Field Maple, Cherry and Hornbeam.

These planting events had the additional benefit of enabling NNDC staff to interact with their colleagues, in a COVID safe environment, after many months of working remotely from home. The weather was kind to us and we planted lots of trees. A really enjoyable experience.�

The Felbeck Trust has also planted 900 trees in West Beckham and the Women’s Institute has planted 310 in Smallburgh and Dilham. A further 165 were given away at Holt Country Park for people to plant themselves on their own land.

The Council has also recently employed a Climate Change Project Officer and Environmental Policy Officer, who will work closely with parishes, communities, and other agents/organisations on green initiatives in North Norfolk.

Organic Gardening

Well, what a year! however as you can see from the photograph, having just come from the allotment with a barrow full of fresh vegetables for the Christmas period, this has still meant exercise on the allotment and a wonderful array of crops. These are so fresh, tasteful and organic. What does organic mean? Just free from any chemicals or much more. I have been growing organically for many years now and as you already know producing my own compost.

However, what is growing organically, organic growing doesn’t just mean not using chemicals, weed killers and pesticide sprays. It is using natural ways to promote a healthy, productive and sustainable growing area. The real principles of organics are that we work with natural systems and cycles. The soil is as important as the plants it supports.

THE MAIN PRINCIPLES ARE: Building and maintaining soil health. The soil is full of life, insects, worms, microscopic organisms to name but a few. These support healthy plant growth. To help with this, we employ crop rotation which involves moving

crops around the plot each year, dig or no dig processes and we treasure our soil. I love my worms; they are a real sign of soil fertility. Being aware of what you bring on to your growing area, manure, what is its provenance, does it contain any antibiotics that have been administered through the food of the animals.

Encourage diversity. All forms of life have a part to play, such as different forms of plants. Henry Doubleday founder of what is now Garden Organic created a plant type called Bocking 14, which is a clump forming comfrey, it doesn’t spread. This plant provides valuable nutrients or food for my compost and liquid feed for my plants. Plants, insects, birds and mammals all have a role to play for instance, I put boards down on the edge of the garden, this creates a home for toads to live and at night them come out and eat the slugs. No need for slug pellets!

Use resources responsibly. The organic grower uses resources sustainably with minimum damage to the planet, pots made out of paper, toilet roll inners, no peat products, keeping the use of plastics to a minimum and using watering wisely.

Avoid harmful chemicals.

Toxic chemicals used to kill weeds, diseases and pests can damage your health and the health of your growing area. Think about Bees and the build up of these chemicals in our water! Using wood that has not been treated, as railway sleepers may contain formaldehyde. All of these principles are creating a journey - it might not happen overnight; however it will keep you growing in a much healthier way, respecting the planet and all the resources we have.

Quick tip for January sow Broad beans in a greenhouse or cold frame, protect from mice! These will produce an early crop which can be planted out in February/March. Sow onion seed and then when big enough, prick out ready for the new season. Keep an eye on your bulbs as they are poking through now. A top dressing of blood, fish and bone meal will help their flowers.

Hedgehog Haven

Since the last report, my numbers have yet again increased, totalling 60 plus. Pictured is Twiggy, she was brought into me while I was at the garden centre. She was entwined in wire and could not uncurl, I dashed her straight away to Westover vets where they were already waiting for her to operate to remove it, fortunately no internal damage had occurred. This picture was taken about 10 minutes after I got her home, already wanting some food, she was on painkillers and a 2-week course of antibiotics. I am very pleased to report that her wounds are healing well & she will be released back to the wild in the spring.

visiting your garden is a stray and always advise people not to start feeding them. Also, to check with vets to make sure no cat fitting its description has been reported missing, if possible, placing a paper collar with your details on so that an owner can confirm it is not a stray and getting the cat checked to see if it is chipped should be the first option. Even a cat which looks in poor health may have an owner and could be receiving veterinary care or on a special diet because of a health issue.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Firstly, an update on Brinn the little cat with the ear problem mentioned last time. Simon, one of the vets who works at Caister and Westover operated on him in early December at Westover. Because the ear canal had fragmented the operation took longer than expected so he was kept in overnight so his condition could be monitored. When he first arrived back apart from a swollen face, he appeared to have coped remarkedly well. He has been back to see Simon for a follow up check, and he is very pleased with his progress.

He needs to go back to see him again before he is ready for a new home (and he already has one lovely family who are hoping to provide this for him).

We have spoken in the past about the importance of not assuming the new cat

Over the Christmas break Stephanie had a call from a lady with such a cat. She advised that she had asked her neighbours and that they did not recognise it either. The cat was now in her home as the weather was not good. She had not taken it to the vets to see whether or not it was chipped so she came to borrow one of our microchip readers to check. The cat was in fact chipped and as we have access to the companies that hold the records of who owns the cat we were able to obtain the name and contact details of the owner. Stephanie contacted the owner who advised that they had moved and that the cat kept going back to the old address and they kept going to collect it. However, recently they had not been able to find him when he disappeared (not surprising as he was inside another person’s home). Stephanie then contacted the person and informed her that the owner would be contacting her to reclaim her cat. She also advised her not to feed the cat again and certainly not to encourage it into her house. The cat was 9 years old and had been with his family since a kitten so they were delighted to learn that no harm had come to him and that he would soon be back where he belonged.

Dilys has now been joined by two more kittens Hettie and Captain Fuddlesworth, who featured, together with their two brothers, in the EDP. Our adoption fee remains the same, for all cats and kittens we rehome, unlike those seen on websites.

New Year Lasting Power of Attorney Discount

Make it your New Year’s Resolution to get your legal affairs in order and plan for the future. Throughout January and February 2021, Clapham & Collinge LLP is offering a 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorney.

We’ve seen a significant increase in the number of clients instructing us to grant power of attorney as the coronavirus outbreak prompts many of us to urgently review our legal affairs. Although it is often difficult to think about, it is crucial that we plan for the future and ensure we can manage our financial affairs in the event of an incapacitating illness, accident or injury. Everyone understands the importance of a Will, but Lasting Powers of Attorney are a bit more obscure in the public sphere and often people are not aware why they need them.

If you lose the ability to manage your own affairs, a partner or family member cannot automatically deal with things on your behalf. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that enables people you choose to have legal authority to make certain decisions for you, if you become unable to make them yourself. The person who is given this authority is known as an ‘attorney’. They can manage your finances, or make decisions relating to your health and welfare. There are

two types of Lasting Power of Attorney:

Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney:

This gives your attorney the power to make decisions about your money and property, including managing bank or building society accounts, paying bills, collecting a pension and if necessary, selling your home. Once registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, it can be used immediately, or held in readiness until required.

Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney:

This gives your attorney the power to make decisions about your daily routine, medical care, moving into a care home and lifesustaining medical treatment. It can only be used if you are unable to make your own decisions.

In relation to the cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney, this will depend on whether you wish to have both a Lasting Power of Attorney (Property and Financial Affairs) and/or a Lasting Power of Attorney (Health and Welfare) prepared and registered. What happens if you don't make a Lasting Power of Attorney?

• No one has legal authority to act on your behalf – your spouse and children have no automatic rights to make decisions on your behalf; • Someone will need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order; • This can be costly, time consuming and you may not end up being assisted by the person you would have chosen yourself.

The cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney will depend on whether you wish to have a Property & Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney and/or a Health & Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney prepared and registered.

Cromer Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) will temporarily close from Monday 4 January as part of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital’s NHS Foundation Trust’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

From Monday, staff based at the MIU in Mill Road, Cromer, will be redeployed to support the minor injuries and Emergency Department at NNUH where our teams are seeing Covid-19 infections and admissions continue to rise.

We know this will be disappointing to North Norfolk patients who value the MIU service at Cromer. However, the Cromer MIU space will be used to maintain a low Covid-19 risk treatment area for surgical appointments and procedures.

The service will be reopened as soon as the Covid-19 situation improves.

An Unusual Visitor Jumping Into the New Year!

Ring in the New!

I can’t quite believe that it is January already, but like many people, I’m slightly amending my diet to atone for the overindulgence that we all know and love as Christmas.

As we moved to 2021 we were privileged to be able to see one of Toll Barn Vets more unusual patients. Our expertise and skills with exotic pets mean we often see more unusual patients, however, Benjy was certainly one of the more exotic! Benjy is a Wallaby owned by a local zoo collection who came to see us when his keeper noticed he wasn’t eating and had stopped interacting with his troupe. Having previously been the alpha male this raised a particular concern.

It’s good to start the New Year with a determination to make some changes, and rather than ‘put myself on a diet’ (surely a sentence to strike trepidation into anyone!) I have determined to increase the number and variety of vegetables and fruit that I eat, which I’m hoping will naturally make me healthier.

One veg that I love is the humble sweet potato; who can resist that vibrant colour and creamy texture that screams comfort food when the temperature is so low? It’s packed full of nutritional superpower, and so easy to source and cook, as well as being fairly easy on the purse.

This is my favourite way to cook them; fast, easy and delicious. Swap the herbs if you’re not keen on rosemary, and try thyme, oregano or curry powder for a bit of heat. I have them like this with a huge salad and maybe a little protein on the side, or just tuck into a pile of them with some garlic mayo to dip them in…..healthy heaven!

Our veterinary surgeons examined Benjy and found he had a nasal discharge which would be painful when eating. Dental abscesses are common in Wallabies but Benjy’s teeth appeared in good condition so our team performed blood tests in our in-house Laboratory and a CT Scan in our Diagnostic Imaging Suite to help diagnose Benjy’s problem. We were very pleased that his blood tests were normal so his organs were functioning well despite him being a slightly older patient. The CT scan however, showed that poor Benjy had a fracture of his orbit (the part of the skull under the eye) and damage to his nose. This damage is likely to have been traumatic as Wallabies, like many species, will often have tussles for dominance when they reach sexual maturity. Our specialised anaesthetic protocols meant Benjy recovered really quickly and our team were able to start him on medication to keep him comfortable and help him eat better whilst his fracture heals and Benjy is now on track to make a full recovery and will be reintegrated with his troupe.

Benjy is quite unusual amongst Wallabies as he is a hand reared and imprinted Wallaby and it was a pleasure to have him at the surgery as, like all of us when we feel poorly, all he wanted was to hold someone’s hand and have a hug! A lovely way to start the new year! We hope all our clients and patients have a safe and healthy 2021 and look forward to seeing you all during the year.

A Big Thanks to Our Generous Donors

Thanks to all our wonderful donors, Cromer And District Foodbank have received an unprecedented amount of food donations for people in need during the last few months and we now have very high stock levels.

We have also seen a big increase in people accessing our Foodbank for the first time and have been able to help many with emergency supplies and further help with issues affecting them.

We need to stocktake during January and reassess our supplies so this month we have taken the unusual step of asking all our donors to have a donation holiday whilst we also continue to distribute our supplies.

This scheme will support certain businesses that were impacted by the national lockdown in England between 5 November 2020 and 2 December 2020 and are not eligible for the Local Restrictions Support Grant.

Businesses will be able to apply from Monday 11 January 2021. Applications will be processed on a first come first served basis.

Tailormade toolkit launched to support businesses across Norfolk to stay open and stay safe

A tailormade toolkit has been launched by Norfolk County Council to support businesses of all sizes and across all sectors to play their part in operating as safely as possible to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The kit, which has been developed by Norfolk’s Public Health team and representatives from local businesses, focuses on NHS Test and Trace and the implications for employers including: workplaces, restaurants, pubs and cafes, places of worship, leisure and entertainment facilities, hairdressers, salons, barbers and public venues.

NHS Test and Trace plays a crucial role in minimising the risk of further outbreaks of

Also published earlier this month was a kit aimed specifically for tourism businesses and accommodation providers.

Graham Plant, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Growing the Economy at Norfolk County Council, said: “It’s great to see businesses across Norfolk have now been able to begin reopening after the lockdown period, and we’re grateful to them for the great lengths they’ve gone to become Covid secure. But it is vital that we all continue to do everything we can to limit the spread of Coronavirus in Norfolk. Businesses have a key role to play in this, from educating and keeping staff safe, to helping NHS Test and Trace to function effectively. These toolkits can help businesses to operate safely and play their part in tackling Coronavirus.”

Norfolk County Council has developed a variety of free resources in since the beginning of the pandemic to provide the latest information and advice on how to protect ourselves, protect others, and protect Norfolk. They include 12 toolkits, 51 posters, more than 80 social media graphics on a wide variety of topics from hand washing and social distancing, to scam and community support advice plus posters for pubs and restaurants. More than 100 translated versions of the materials are available. With individual documents and posters already downloaded a total of 26,677 times at the time of writing, the kits are available for individuals, partners, organisations and businesses to help remind the public of how to stay safe.

Chris Starkie, chief executive of New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “Businesses have a key role to play in the NHS Test and Trace programme. Nature has always been compensation for my work inside hospitals, caring for others. Today I care for nature. For me, there’s no better place to be than on Blakeney Point where I volunteer as a National Trust Seal Warden and property photographer. A combination of both allows me to capture unique wildlife scenes

from a safe distance, like the birth of a pup. (images) The pupping season started in October but by the end of November, Blakeney Point looked like a seal maternity ward with pups scattered

everywhere. It’s difficult not to anthropomorphise nature and to attach humanness to everything we see. Nature takes and nature gives. Though, nature is neither cute nor cruel. As a Seal Warden, I have to ensure the seals are not disturbed by informing and guiding the visitors, sharing my knowledge and passion for this place. The Grey Seal is the largest seal living in the UK. Blakeney Point is the biggest colony

in England with 3,399 pups born in 2019/20. This year we expect the number to exceed 4000 pups. The rangers had to change their way of counting the pups for safety reasons and you can find out more about this on their website.

The colony is expanding due to Blakeney Point being a perfect breeding site with vast land and no natural predators. Should you encounter a seal on your way from Cley beach towards The Point, please keep your distance, do not approach or disturb them in any way as this will cause unnecessary stress. 2020 was a difficult year but nature thrived.

‘Personal representatives’ is the collective term for an executor or administrator of a deceased persons estate. A personal representative is responsible for ensuring all rightful beneficiaries receive their share of an inheritance. This can be difficult if the beneficiaries are unknown or if there is no will.

It is not uncommon for personal representatives to face difficulty tracking down some beneficiaries of an estate, especially if the will was written a long time ago.

Lost beneficiaries

To comply with their legal duties, personal representatives must take all reasonable steps to trace beneficiaries. This could include:

• Making enquiries with other beneficiaries and family members • Conducting searches of death or other public records • Conducting online research • Placing adverts calling for the lost beneficiary to come forward; or • Instructing a tracing agent.

If reasonable steps have not been taken, a personal representative can find themselves personally liable to a claim against the estate by a lost beneficiary who later comes forward.

Unexpected beneficiaries

An unexpected beneficiary is someone who

turns up when the personal representative was previously unaware of their existence or entitlement. This is most likely to happen in an intestacy situation or if there is a gift in a will to a class of people, (eg. “my children”). If the estate has already been distributed, this can cause significant problems for a personal representative.

Protecting yourself against unexpected beneficiaries

If you are acting as a personal representative, you can avoid becoming personally liable to beneficiaries of whom you are unaware, by taking certain steps to protect yourself, these can include:

Disgruntled dependants

You might find yourself faced with a disgruntled dependant or family member who has been excluded from the will or does not benefit under the intestacy rules. They may be entitled to bring a claim for a share of the estate. If you as personal representative have already distributed the estate, you could find yourself personally liable if certain steps and precautions were not been taken.

Appointing a solicitor

• Publishing official notices advertising the death of the deceased and calling for beneficiaries to come forward • Instructing a Genealogist at the outset to carry out a full investigation and prepare a full family tree • Obtaining missing beneficiary indemnity insurance

National offensive weapons surrender scheme begins following introduction of new laws

People in Norfolk are being given three months to surrender certain items that will soon be classed as offensive weapons under new legislation coming into force.

The Offensive Weapons Act 2019 introduces the new legislation as part of the Government’s response to serious violence, that gives the police the powers to tackle the issue. The act includes new measures to control the sale of knives and corrosive substances, it also introduces new offences relating to their possession and use and will bring in new knife crime prevention.

Under the new laws, the possession of specified rapid firing rifles, bump stocks, knives, and offensive weapons for public safety, will be prohibited.

To ensure the public can dispose of these items safely, a three-month surrender period started on Thursday 10 December and will run until Tuesday 9 March 2021. During this time, the lawful owners of these weapons can begin to surrender them to the police and submit a claim form for compensation from the Home Office.

Temporary Chief Inspector Jon Chapman head of the Joint Roads and Armed Policing Team said: "It is extremely important that anyone who is currently in possession of one of the above items, is aware of the change in legislation.

"Although there is a three-month surrender period, we urge lawful owners of these items to either return them to a designated police station or contact their local licensing department as soon as possible.

"The reason for this being that anyone found in possession of these items after the surrender period will effectively be in possession of an illegal weapon or firearm and could face up to ten years in prison.

"Please ensure that when you are transporting items to one of the designated police stations, you do so in a safe manner. This includes wrapping items or placing them in a bag or a box, if possible. Please also make sure that you do not take the items out until you are requested to do so by a police officer or member of staff.

"Members of the public should also continue to adhere to the Covid regulations when attending stations by making sure they are wearing a mask and socially distancing from those around them.

"If possible, please call 101 beforehand to ensure officers or staff are aware of your visit.”

Officers arrived on scene at 9:45pm and discovered approximately 60 people present in, what appeared to be, the early stages of an unlicensed music event being set up.

Roads accessing the area were blocked by police cars after officers went on to the site. Two people were also reported for possession of drugs.

Supt Terry Lordan said: "With so many people in Norfolk abiding by the Tier 4 regulations, put in place to keep us all safe, it is very disappointing to then have a minority behave in this way. These events are not only illegal and, with the threat of coronavirus, extremely unsafe, they also cause unnecessary damage and disruption. Across Norfolk, thankfully, the large majority of our residents spent a peaceful evening welcoming in the New Year, for which I am grateful. This small group of individuals who looked to attend this event however, learned that, where we can, we will prevent, disrupt or stop a rave or unlicensed musical event from taking place and we won’t hesitate to use Covid enforcement action where we need to.”

It is with much sadness that John Green a member and supporter of The Royal British Legion since he left the RAF in 1955, has passed away. When Runton and Aylmerton Branch sadly closed down many years ago, he joined our Branch, became an Officer, and at Group 4 Meetings and Dedication Services he was known with great fondness by many. Our thoughts and prayers are with his three sons and their families.

A New Year, and sadly we are still at the mercy of Covid-19 and we have many events planned, and indeed we hope to include those which had to be cancelled last year, but during these very challenging times, we can set no dates or make arrangements.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club News from the Club House ...

Best wishes to everyone for a Happy and Safe New Year! Oh, how I wish there was some positive bowls news to give! The best news on that front is that the green is beginning to flourish on the few warm days we have had and should be spectacular when the season begins! Unfortunately, there is sad news again regarding one of our members. Bernice Billington has passed away. Bernice was a prominent member of Cromer Marrams Bowls Club for a number of years. Club President in 2014 and again in 2016, she worked tirelessly for the club. Liaising with North Norfolk District Council, arranging new flooring in the toilet block and hosting Bowls England when they played Cromer Marrams in 2016. She organised the painting of the interior of the toilet block and sourced new club shirts etc. She was also a whizz selling second-hand bowls and clothing to new members. Bernice was Ladies Captain for several years. Sadly, all of the time she was at the Club, Bernice had health problems with leukaemia and her heart. When her husband, Graham, died in 2018, Bernice thought long and hard and eventually sold her house in West Runton in order to move to Perth, Australia, to be with her son and grandchildren. She nearly didn’t make it as she was taken ill and had to go to hospital at Christmas 2019 and again in February 2020. But with grit and determination (so like Bernice) she made it onto a plane early in March bound for Perth. There she was in hospital for a while before house sharing with her son and seeing her grandchildren. From March to December, she had seven blood transfusions but sadly died in early December. So sad, close friends in the Club are comforted by the thought that she did make it to Australia and have time with her family. We know some local bowls players did not have the opportunity to play last year, so we encourage you to put ‘Contact Cromer Marrams’ in your diary for April. We have all the official COVID safety features in place, tried and tested last season, so all being well we will be open for play as soon as the government/weather permits in April, only 4 months away! You will be most welcome to join us. Our membership subscription will

remain at only £65 and we are open 10am to 8pm every day from April to September!
