Fishing Wars
They say, ‘worse things happen at sea’ and for Cromer Crab fishermen it may well be the case.
Fishing for crabs and lobsters off the Norfolk and Suffolk coast has a history going back over 300 years and our small but sweet Cromer Crabs are considered a delicacy and a must John Davies’ fishing boat The Richard William try dish for visitors. But this traditional fayre is under threat due to a conflict between marine environment conservation and local fisheries.
Natural England (NE) are advisors to the Government on environmental issues. In the past they declared crab fishing around the chalk reef off our coast, known as The Shoal, was low impact and not significantly harmful to the reef, however this may have changed with NE now saying that damage is affecting the reef and that crab potting needs to adapt to prevent further damage. This could mean adapting fishing gear and practices to banning fishing on The Shoal all together. Continued on page 4...

Fishing Wars
June 2021 meeting
Continued from front cover... The fishermen argue that these measures are not based on scientific evidence but anecdotal observations from divers monitoring The Shoal.
Those remaining members, anticipating a careful step on the road to normality, had a treat in store.
The speaker was our own well-liked and respected president Caz Lewis. With chairs well-spaced and windows and doors flung open, Covid compliant, we listened intently as Caz outlined her life story which was as candid as it was fascinating. Many personal and poignant details were exposed as the talk progressed. Born on Christmas Day 1944 in Leicester, Caz was the 7th of 8 children, all of whom were loved and well cared for. In wartime England, this must have been hard. Sometime later Caz was told that the dad who had cared for her, was not her biological father, as she had been the result of a brief encounter between her mum and an American stationed in England to help the war effort. He soon left to return home. Caz’s dad though not her biological one, did the real fatherly caring. Having served his country in India and Burma, he sadly died aged 63. The gap was a yawning one. However, Caz’s mum- more distant- lived to reach the age of 97. As our president said a little ruefully, she was never a soulmate, though this didn’t stop Caz looking after her for many years. After being divorced, Caz met and married Roy and just before Christmas this year, they will celebrate their Silver Wedding Anniversary. By then though, they will have moved far from here, to be nearer to their three daughters and their families, lovely for them, but sad for us. They will go with our gratitude and good wishes for their new life. Following a tea break and a delectable strawberry gateau freshly made by Caz an accomplished cook, the business part of the meeting was brief. The A.G.M Zoom style was mentioned. Though the speakers were good it was too lengthy. We were advised of some changes at Federation level and Val Bond appealed for plant donations to bolster her Village Fair Stall (Sunday 1st August 2021 ). Happily, our link with Concorde WI in New Zealand has been re-established. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 21st July at 2.30pm in Overstrand Village Hall. New members are welcome.
They are keen to protect The Shoal as without it their livelihood is gone. There are questions about compensation for costly modification of fishing equipment added to the difficulties they are already experiencing recruiting new blood into the industry.
John Davies, Chairman of the North Norfolk Fishermen’s Society said, “Banning crab fishing is a step too far. Common sense needs to be brought to the situation. This is our livelihood; my family have been fishermen for eight generations. We have an interest in preserving The Shoal, without it we have no fishery. With the uncertainty about the future of crab fishing it is getting harder to attract youngsters into the industry.”
John has enlisted the help of local MP Duncan Baker who is raising these issues in Westminster. Mr. Baker said,” I am in discussion with Victoria Prentis, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for DEFRA, to raise these issues and highlight the problems of our local crab fishermen.”
The North Norfolk Fishing Society continue to work with Natural England and the Eastern Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authority (IFCA) to reach a reasonable compromise and continue the fishery.

A Note from the editor
After a false start with the weather, dare I say Summer is here?
Restrictions are easing and visitors are arriving in their droves, but we still need to exercise caution and stay safe. Having said that, it is vital for our local economy to provide a warm welcome to our visitors and help everyone to enjoy our wonderful town and all it has to offer.
Chances Project
When Liza started working with the Chances project, she hadn’t had a job in nine months – but that was about to change. After Covid, everything was different: her employer had to let her go, and she’d lost confidence that she’d be able to work again. Her housing situation was precarious, too. She wasn’t sure she’d be able to afford her rent, and wanted to move to a more affordable flat. Liza wanted to work, and was motivated to find a job – but she needed confidence, and support, to help her take the next step.
I mentioned the RNLI’s message on Safety in the Water last issue, and we are running their advice again in this issue, please have a look and remind everyone to take care and know what to do if you find yourself or anyone else in trouble. Above all, enjoy the Summer, now it is here.
Whatever you get up to, enjoy your July magazine.
Keep safe and well. Jo – editor.
Chances provided that support. Liza worked one-to-one with Eniko, one of our Advocates, to update her CV, assist her with job searching, and helped her access opportunities to improve her English. In less than a month, Liza had attended an interview and been offered a new job, as well as securing a permanent tenancy with Clarion. Eniko even helped Liza search for used furniture around Holt, so that she could furnish her new home with a dining table and chairs.
Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines. Month Copy deadline Publishing date August Tuesday 3rd August Friday 13th August September Tuesday 31st August Friday 10th September October Tuesday 28th September Friday 8th October
This is why Chances works. Advocates offer one-to-one, tailored support to help you take the next step towards work. We have time to spend with you, in person and face to face. WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offe fers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

292. Mate in two moves
Solution to No. 291: 1. Qf1, no threat. 1… e1Q+2. Ne6 (h5 now guarded by white Bd1); 1… exf1- 2. Bh5; 1… hxg5 2. Rf6 (g5 now self-blocked); 1… h5 2. Ne6; 1… exd12. Qa6 (set 2. Qe6); 1… R2. Rf6 (g5 now guarded by white Bc1); 1… h5 2. Ne6 (h5 self-blocked). Three line-openings by promoting black Pe2, one by the black R, and two self-blocks by black Ph6. Probably difficult for OTB players with the Q sacrifice key, the check permitted to the white K, and the complete absence of any threat. Also the set Q mate on e6 is replaced by a more distant one on a6.
The diagram of No. 292, 1… B- is set with 2. Re4, but no mate for 1… Kd4. Each of two possible moves by one particular white piece provide very pleasant mates, but which one copes with everything? Difficulty 2.

This refresh has been developed as we work on producing a new website. Both the previous logo and website have certainly stood the test of time, having been created over 14 years ago. You’ll see that we have retained the key elements that represent the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, such as the wildlife, landscape, including built environment, and dark skies reference. New icons added recognise the part that people, leisure and sustainable transport play in our management of this special place and the line linking these follows (roughly) the shape of ourcoastline, with the colours representing the fluidity of this and land/marsh/sea interface.

Of particular note is the bird who some may remember as pre-dating even the previous logo and it is important to us to carry this representation of our heritage through to the current refresh.
We hope you like it and comments are welcome. To save any wastage, there won’t be a sudden change as we use up any printed resources that carry our old logo, but rather a gradual transition. Cromer War Memorial Centenary
03-July-1921 to 03-July-2021 One hundred years ago on the 03-July-1921, crowds gathered in the grounds around the Parish Church in Cromer. The crowd comprised of men who had returned from fighting in World War One, there were widows and parents of those who fought but did not return, also present were Church and civic dignitaries.
Pritchard announced that he would start a fund-raising campaign to raise the required funds to fully restore and renovate the memorial, replace the four figures as well as the figure of St. George slaying the dragon Importantly, he also wanted to re-carve the names of those names engraved on the memorial as well as adding the names of those who had died since, including Corporal Stephen Bolger of the Special Forces, killed in Afghanistan on 30-May-2009.
They had gathered to witness the unveiling of the newly erected memorial outside the eastern side of the Parish Church. The guest of honour was General John Townshend, the sixth Marquess Townshend.
The memorial was constructed out of Clipsham stone and cost approximately £700.00. This amount was raised through public subscription. However, there had been some opposition to the Memorial, primarily from the Vicar of Cromer at the time but this was strongly opposed at several public meetings.
The estimate for the work was £45,000 and Cllr. Pritchard had set a target that the funds needed to be raised and all the work completed by 11 October 2018, which was one month before the centenary of the Armistice being signed which marked the ceasefire to WW1.
Over the following years, the number of WW1 veterans attending Remembrance Sunday slowly decreased as did the number of War Widows. In 1939, Cromer and the rest of the country once again found themselves at war with Germany and after the war in November 1945, it is reported that the crowds of ex-servicemen and newly made widows had once again grown significantly.
After fund-raising at various events and numerous generous donations from so many individuals and hard-working charitable groups in and around Cromer, work on the Memorial started the day after the Remembrance Service and Parade in November 2017.
The years have not been kind to the War Memorial, and this is not helped by the fact that Clipsham stone is a soft stone and erosion heavily laced with salt air blowing up Jetty Street and into the Church yard left the four figures of an infantry man, a sailor, an early pilot and a nurse had features which could no longer be clearly defined. Damage to the central shaft by an enemy attack on nearby properties was also taking its toll on important joints.
One year later, on Saturday 10-November, a packed Parish Church met and following the service the people of Cromer once again gathered around the War memorial to watch the re-dedication of the Memorial. The town was honoured to receive Lord Charles Townshend, the eighth Marquess Townshend to perform the unveiling as it seemed only right that he conducted an event being the grandson of the sixth Marquess who unveiled the Memorial in 1921.
A small grant of £500 was awarded by the War Memorial Trust to make minor repairs to the memorial but this barely touched the surface of the work which would soon be required.
The memorial was due to have some soft cleaning due to patches of the protective coating wearing away, but this has been delayed due to COVID-19. The memorial like anything 100 years old will need some gentle care moving forward but by looking after the stone, it should be with us for many more years to come as a symbol of those who willingly joined the Armed Forces and through their dedication and service, paid the ultimate price.
In 2013, the newly elected Mayor of Cromer Town Council, Cllr David
%J T QVU F 3FT PM VU J PO
Plans had been made by Cromer Town Council to commemorate the centenary of the Memorial but due to the existing COVID-19 restrictions, it was decided to take a photo with the same flag used in the rededication of 2018 to mark the occasion.

Police Have Launched Summer Initiative to Protect Norfolk's Wildlife Habitats Visitors to Norfolk's coast this summer are being encouraged to act responsibly around wildlife. Norfolk Constabulary has signed up to the national initiative Operation Seabird to raise awareness of the importance of protecting and preserving our rich wildlife habitats and tackling disturbance to seals, sea birds and nesting birds.
Officers will be out and about meeting visitors in specific locations across the county – including the beach on the Holkham estate, the Holme Dunes, Snettisham Beach to Heacham south
beach, Winterton and Horsey beaches and Blakeney Point – between the beginning of June and the end of August.
PC Chris Shelley, Norfolk Constabulary's Rural Crime Officer, said: "We always work closely with conservation charities, local councils and other key partners right along Norfolk's coastline to identify areas of concern.
"We're proud to be taking part in Operation Seabird this year and our focus will be on protecting our vulnerable ground nesting sea birds, the Little Terms and Ringer Plover, ensuring the seals on our beaches are not disturbed and educating and encouraging visitors to be responsible and consider how their actions may affect our wildlife. "We all have a duty to act responsibly and take extra care when we're out and about. While the focus of Operation Seabird is to engage, explain and educate visitors, we will act against anybody who wilfully and intentionally damages and disrupts our wildlife and their habitats.” Previous incidents along our coastline have included dogs off leads disturbing nesting birds or seals, wild campers lighting fires on the beach dunes and causing significant damage to the fauna, quad bikes or 4x4 vehicles riding over nesting areas and canoeists getting too close to seals RSPCA Insp Becky Harper said: "This year we are expecting an upsurge in people, who would
! "
normally go abroad for holidays, doing UK based staycations. "It should be remembered that our beautiful beach & coastal areas, which are fun for us to play in, are natural habitats and breeding grounds for many native and migratory animals, including several species on the endangered list. We humans share this space, and we can easily and unwittingly cause disturbance, fear and distress.
"For many tourists it can be surprising and exciting to see marine mammals, including seals & their pups which will normally rest on the beach at various times of year, as well as ground nesting birds which are usually resident between March to September. As tempting as it is to approach them, we would respectfully ask that all people are careful to: maintain a good distance; don't try to get close enough to touch or take selfies; read signs, stick to paths and keep dogs on leads where instructed to do so; and keep dogs under control at all times." Anyone who witnesses the deliberate and intentional disturbance of wildlife and their habitats is encouraged to contact Norfolk Police on 101 quoting Operation Seabird. Operation Seabird was launched in 2020 by North Yorkshire and Humberside Police along with the RSPCA and is supported by local authorities, RNLI and wildlife trusts.

Cromer Cancer Unit Gets a Donation of £6146.13 from The Morley Club
In December 2019 Nicky Royle started to fundraise at the Morley Club for the new Cancer Unit at Cromer. He had been receiving treatment for throat cancer for the whole of that year and had to travel to Norwich regularly, so he understood all too well how very important it was to have a cancer unit nearer to home.
Sadly, he was told in Feb 2020 that, despite all the gruelling treatment he had gone through, his cancer had returned and there was nothing else that could be done for him but he continued with his efforts until he died in July 2020 by which time he had raised £3058.95.
He was very popular at the Morley and after his death other members
carried on the fundraising in his honour for the rest of the year, and although lockdown prevented many of the events that he had planned would take place, many people made donations in his memory.
By December 2020 the amount raised had more than doubled and the new unit has now received a cheque from the Morley Club for £6146.13, largely due to Nicky’s efforts and he would have been so very pleased with the result. Many thanks to everyone who helped with events and made donations

Chorizo, Pea and Parma Ham Risotto
We've been incredibly busy at the Grove since reopening and it's been so lovely to welcome back old friends and new faces to both our restaurants - the a la carte, still going strong, and of course Sundown, our new stonebaked pizza and Norfolk tapas restaurant set in two giant tipis in the grounds of the Grove.
Our wonderful staff have done an amazing job getting things up and running to the very high standards we had pre-Covid, and it been very rewarding to see some excellent reviews and generous compliments. They're a top team and we are very proud of them all.
This risotto dish is a really useful string to your culinary bow as it can be adapted for pretty much everything. Our sous chef Kharn is particularly fond of this version, possibly because the parma strips are perfect for snacking on, but also for various professional reasons I'm sure.
Bookings available The Grove, Cromer 01263 821463
Ingredients 2 tbsp mild olive oil 1 grated onion 2 grated garlic cloves
250g arborio risotto rice 100ml white wine 1 ltr chicken stock cube, made with 1 stock cube 250g chorizo, roughly diced 200g frozen peas 6 slices of Parma ham 75g grated Grana Padano cheese 25g butter freshly ground black pepper
Method ● Heat the oil in a large, non-stick saucepan over a medium heat; add the onion and garlic and fry for 2-3 minutes until softened and beginning to colour. ● Add the risotto rice to the pan and stir well for 30-40 seconds, until the oil has coated the grains of rice. ● Pour in half of the wine and allow to simmer for 30-40 seconds, then add all of the stock and bring to the boil, stirring well. ● Reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 8-10 minutes, stirring frequently, until the rice is almost tender and the risotto is creamy in appearance.
● In a separate pan, fry the chorizo for a couple of minutes and drain off the oil. ● Lay out the parma ham on baking paper on a tray and bake in the oven 220c for three minutes; leave to cool and harden.
● Stir in the remaining wine, the chorizo and the frozen peas, then continue to cook, stirring constantly, for a further 4-5 minutes, or until the chicken and peas are heated through and the rice is tender with a slight bite.
● Remove the pan from the heat, then stir in the butter and cheese. Plate and add the strips of ham as garnish; season with black pepper.
Weather Forecast
The past three months came out as predicted the main point being the slow transition from winter-spring-summer temperature wise plus an erratic distribution of rainfall. Sea temperature was below or well below average and with persistence winds in from the sea beach weather it wasn’t.
The next three months will continue the improvement slowly establishing itself giving us longer finer spells and higher temperatures although the cold North Sea will be continuing its influence on us from time to time so a few degrees either side of twenty will be what we will get the majority of the time. Rainfall is always difficult to forecast longer term and summertime storms will occur but where and when is impossible to predict but there will be some. Best described as a typical British summer. Seasonal Treats Salmon, Asparagus and Feta Quiche
For the pastry: 8 oz self-raising flour 4 oz butter/Marg Salt Approx 4 tblsp very cold water
We can all enjoy a little of the more expensive ingredients that arrive seasonally without breaking the bank, by finding clever ways to make a little go a long way. I love making quiche, and it’s such a great way to stretch more expensive ingredients. Hot roast smoked salmon is a rich and indulgent way to enjoy salmon, with a huge depth of flavour that works so well in a quiche, and marries perfectly with asparagus, a seasonal favourite.
Feeding these things to a family of four is rather costly though, hence the recipe featured in this issue. Don’t be afraid to make your own pastry; if you don’t over-handle it or over roll it and use cold bowl/knife and butter you will be fine. I also prefer self-raising flour as it gives the pastry a better texture. Homemade always tastes better. This recipe is for a large quiche for a family, but you can easily adjust it for a smaller one. Use good eggs for quiches; it makes all the difference. Feta is a deliciously light cheese to finish the recipe off; all in all a wonderful taste of summer!
Carefully pour over the egg mix, being sure not to disturb the salmon and asparagus too much.
Crumble up the feta and place on the top and put into a preheated oven on 180° for approx 40 mins, or until set.
Serve immediately. Also delicious eaten cold.
Carolyn Burn
For the filling: 1-piece hot roast smoked salmon 1 bunch asparagus, chopped into bite sized pieces 8 eggs, beaten with a little single cream Pinch nutmeg Dried or fresh dill ½ pack feta cheese Salt and pepper
Make the pastry by cutting the butter into small pieces and adding to the sifted flour with a pinch of salt.
Rub in until mixture resembles crumbs, and add the water, bringing it together with a knife and then into a ball with your hands and cover with clingfilm, placing into fridge until needed.
Meanwhile, lightly steam the asparagus (only for a few minutes) and set aside.
Beat the eggs and cream with a pinch of nutmeg and a flat teaspoon of dill.
Roll out pastry and line a large, fluted flan dish, pricking the base all over with a fork.
Crumble the salmon into the base and add the asparagus, ensuring even distribution.

Redwings Rescued Pony Becomes TV Star on Kate Humble’s Farm
A rescued horse from Redwings Horse Sanctuary has found a loving new home at the farm of wildlife television presenter Kate Humble.
The moment Gilbert, a handsome six-year-old cob, arrived at his new home was filmed for the latest episode of Escape to the Farm, which aired last week on Channel 5.
The series follows life on Kate’s farm, ‘Humble by Nature’, in Monmouthshire, Wales, and this episode captured Gilbert being led from the Redwings horsebox and meeting his new Guardian Sarah Stephens.
Sarah had been searching for a companion for horse Rags, who lives at Kate’s farm and who had sadly lost his stablemate. After enquiring with Redwings, the charity’s Rehoming team in Norfolk set about finding a perfect new
friend for Rags.
Gilbert's mother Florence was rescued from horrific conditions as part of a large-scale rescue operation. However, as he was born following the rescue, he has never known anything other than love and care and was chosen specifically by the team for the important job of being a friend to Rags because of his calm and friendly nature.
Having arrived at his new home in April, Gilbert is settling well into his new surroundings.
at Redwings helped us find Gilbert. He and our Rags struck up an instant rapport and Gilbert has become well and truly part of the farm family.
Kate said: “Finding the perfect companion for a horse who has lost his stablemate of many years was not something I expected to be easy. But the knowledge and experience of the staff
“We are so grateful for the careful consideration that Redwings gave to allow us to rehome this lovely horse and, in so doing, support the work of this excellent charity.” Redwings has been rehoming rescued horses since 2005. Due to Covid safety measures, the charity is currently rehoming just non-ridden companion ponies and unbacked project horses the latter receive basic training but are suitable to be trained to be ridden by experienced Guardians once in their new home.

Despite the changes, Redwings experienced its most successful rehoming year ever in 2020 and recently rehomed its 100th pony since the onset of the pandemic.
Rachel Angell, Redwings’ Head of Norfolk Equine Operations and Rehoming, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that Gilbert is enjoying his new home – and has become a television star to boot! Thank you to Kate and Sarah for highlighting the sheer joy of rehoming a rescued horse and the importance of companion ponies.
“Companions not only provide invaluable friendship for another horse, but they can also act as calming travel buddies or can simply be wonderful pets in their own right. When you rehome from a registered charity like Redwings, you’re not only giving a second start in life to a rescued horse but you’re also providing space at the Sanctuary for another horse in need to be brought to safety.
“We wish Gilbert, Rags, Sarah and Kate many happy years together!” Episodes of Escape to the Farm are available to watch on My5 at www.channel5.com.

New Venture Supporting Local Charities
Jet Adventures www.jetadventures.co.uk/ presents an exciting new venture on the water for 2021! An independent family run business offering boat trips along the stunning Sunrise coast our jet powered rib is providing safe, fun and fascinating trips for all. Taking in the broad and varied views to be found along the East Anglian coast, from watching the seals on Scroby Sands and Horsey Beach to getting up close to the fascinating and powerful windfarms. Take a tour with us around the historic and interesting Lowestoft Harbour and Lake Lothing, or just come for the ride and for the joy of a great boat trip, you’ll be sure to enjoy a unique and memorable experience.
Our boat Shearwater is the perfect tool for what we do. A big inboard diesel engine and a jet drive come together perfectly to give us a very powerful, manoeuvrable and safe boat that’s a fabulous platform for our coastal tours and trips.
Reflecting on this past year we have all collectively felt the impact of the pandemic, we now feel there is finally light at the end of the tunnel and what better way to enjoy the feeling of absolute freedom and fresh air than a great boat trip out on the open water! However please be reassured there is a strict Covid protection policy in place for guests and crew alike. You can view the guidelines we are following here: https://goodtogo.visitbritain.com/
Whilst this is a commercial venture it’s very important to us that we give something back to the local area. Operating from the MTB102 Trust on Lake Lothing in Oulton Broad and supporting their charity www.mtb102.com/ our boat and staff are available free of charge to charities such as www.friendsofhorseyseals.co.uk/. We also support other charities including Hemsby Lifeboat and seapallinglifeboat.co.uk/ with the kind donations from our customers.
Jet Adventures are also extremely proud to be WiSe www.wisescheme.org/ accredited wildlife safe operators, committed to following a strict code of conduct to ensure we do not disturb any marine wildlife.

Local MP Champions Our Hedgehogs
The hedgehog is regularly voted as Britain’s most popular wild mammal. We all love them, but their numbers are under serious threat. The most recent report from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society indicates that there may be as few as 1 million hedgehogs left in the UK today. 1 million might sound like a big number. But actually, it is a decrease of over 50% in the last 20 years.
Lockdown has focused our minds and made us re-evaluate our lives. I’m glad, because the environment has taken even more of a centre stage and heightened the understanding of the delicately constructed ecosystems on which our society is built. Perhaps these factors, along with our fondness of them, have caused over 100,000 people to put their names to a petition, calling on Parliament to discuss the protection afforded to hedgehogs.
Despite our love of these special creatures, how much do we really understand about them. Perhaps you didn’t know that hedgehogs are one of only three animals to hibernate in the United Kingdom. They are lactose intolerant and prefer that you leave cat or dog food out for them with some water. We all know they only come out at night, but they’re also pretty quick when they want to be and can run over six feet per second!
Their dwindling numbers is what is causing many to be concerned. It is alarming and we need to start acting now, to reverse this trend.
The British Hedgehog Preservation Society is asking for hedgehogs to be moved from schedule 6 to schedule 5 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 to allow them greater protections. However, the 7th Quinquennial Review of Schedules 5 and 8 of the Act, potentially provides recommendations to DEFRA on major changes to these schedules. This 2021 review seeks to change the ‘Eligibility Criteria’ of the hedgehog, currently listed on schedule 6. It is proposed that the country-based statutory nature conservation bodies will only retain protected status for species that are in imminent danger of extinction in Great Britain.
This shift in focus will preferentially consider GB Red Listed species, as defined by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The effect of the proposed changes could mean that rather than increasing protection for hedgehogs, their current minor level of protection may be removed.
I know from having visited ‘Hedgehog Haven’, a local organisation in my constituency, committed to the protection of hedgehogs, just how important governmental action is in upholding our collective custodial responsibility, owed to these animals. Experts at the centre outlined their satisfaction with the decision to ban the keeping of hoglets following an amendment to this effect, in the Wildlife and Countryside Act. Having also been working in Parliament, on the Environmental Audit Select Committee, I am aware that more needs to still be done, to protect and enhance our domestic ecosystems. However, we’ve
highlighted the fact that hedgehogs’ health and their quantity, are one of the best indicators of a healthy micro-environment.
Whilst the work that the government continues to do is welcome, I want to see this debate really initiate a step-change in the long-term prospects of the hedgehog population. I think that for us to up-end the statistics, there are a few salient issues that should be addressed. I think that the Joint Nature Conservation Committee’s review must strengthen protective legislation for hedgehogs and as we saw in the Environmental Audit Committee’s recent findings on biodiversity in the UK, we have more to do. Enhancing protection for our precious hedgehog is good starting point.
And let’s not forget that everyone’s contribution is important. The hedgehog is known as the “gardener’s friend” because it eats caterpillars, beetles and other critters. Combined, our gardens provide a space for wildlife larger than all our National Nature Reserves and so by gardening in a wildlife-friendly way we can help our prickly little friends and help protect them in our own backyards. Duncan Baker MP

It's been a very busy time, with a litter of 3 hoglets & a week later a litter of 4 coming in without a mother, with none of the litters having their eyes open they have needed 3 hourly syringe feeding & toileting I'm not getting much sleep! Hand rearing hoglets is very demanding & not always successful as the best thing for a Hoglet is its mother.

physiotherapist gives you the peace of mind that the physiotherapist you see has the correct qualifications to treat your pet. There is a register of chartered physiotherapists available through the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (ACPAT) website www.acpat.org
Did you know animals need physiotherapy too? What does physiotherapy involve?
You may have experienced aches and pains and had the benefit of physiotherapy to help you back to full health but you might not be aware that the same treatments are available for your pet.
A large number of our pets will suffer with musculoskeletal pain at some point in their lives, some of them may be unlucky enough to break a leg or require orthopaedic surgery, and others will struggle with the aches and pains associated with older age.
Much like in people, a physiotherapist will examine your pet standing, walking and lying down, treatment often involves a combination of massage, myofascial and trigger point release, electrotherapy (laser, ultrasound etc), individual exercise programmes and adaptations to their environment. The benefit and improvement in your pet is often obvious after the first session.
If you’re concerned about your pet, have a look at the ACPAT website and find a physiotherapist today.
How can you choose the right physiotherapist?
Currently the title ‘veterinary physiotherapist’ is not a protected term, this means that someone may be able to use the term without having the necessary qualifications. However, chartered physiotherapist is a protected term, so choosing a chartered

Sheringham and Beeston Regis Sea Scout Group are looking for adult volunteers The group has been established for over 100 years and have excellent facilities at our Scout Headquarters in De Morley Garth, Sheringham.
Our future volunteers might be parents of young people already in the movement, people who remember their own days as Scouts or those who want to support the young in their community. We are an active group and enjoy many activities including Archery, Shooting, Axe throwing, Hiking, Fire lighting, Camping and Cooking.
The last year has been very challenging for the group but despite the pandemic we have provided various activities at home over Zoom.
We are now able to hold section meetings outdoors under Covid-19 social distancing guidelines. We currently have spaces available for new members in Beavers (children aged 6-8), Cubs (children aged 8-10½) and Scouts (children aged 10½ -14). We need volunteers to help run the Beaver, Cub and Scout sections including Leaders and Assistants. Do you have any skills or hobbies that could provide activities for these sections?
We need help on the Executive Committee including Chair of the Executive Committee and Secretary. The Executive Committee meets approximately four times a year and holds an Annual General Meeting. We need help with general maintenance of the Scout Headquarters, cleaning and gardening. We also need help with fundraising.

become compressed and unable to inflate therefore preventing poor Pip from being able to breathe. Luckily for Pip our team were on site and ready to help. The location of the damage to the trachea and extent of the chest damage were determined using our onsite CT scanner which allowed us to build a 3D picture of the trachea and chest. Our team undertook a delicate surgery to repair the tracheal damage using our endoscope to avoid the need for conventional “open” surgery. At the same time our team placed chest drains to remove the air accumulation around the lungs allowing the lungs to reinflate. This type of life saving procedure required use of our specialised monitoring equipment anaesthetic
protocols and we are delighted to say that despite all the severity of her injuries Pip has made a full recovery.
The hidden danger of collars
Most of our canine companions wear collars and indeed it helps fulfil the legal requirement to have a tag with required details. However, collars can also pose some hidden dangers for our furry friends. This beautiful lady, Pip, was rushed to Toll Barn Vets as an out of hours emergency when she had been playing with her canine companion. During the play session both dogs became entwined in each other’s collars.
When Pip arrived at the surgery she was in shock and had a lot of air trapped underneath her skin (subcutaneous emphysema). The cause of this air was damage to the trachea (windpipe) as a result of the collar putting pressure on the trachea and causing it to rupture. This in turn caused a life-threatening condition known as tension pneumothorax – a condition where the area around the lungs fills with air under a high tension and causes the lungs to
Sadly, similar injuries occur when dogs become caught on their crates by their collars and in the most severe cases these can cause life changing injuries.
Whilst collars are often needed it is important to be aware of the potential harm they can cause and consider removing them prior to unsupervised dogs playing together or being crated unsupervised.

Coltishall Clinic - Introducing Breakthrough Technology to Tone muscle fibres to maximum intensity solely by voluntary exercises. and Shape the Body The machines work by inducing forced muscle contractions as muscle
Is it possible to build muscle without breaking a sweat? Yes, indeed it is. We now have the technology to build muscle and burn fat- all whilst you are comfortably reading your favorite book or magazine!
This is all about shaping your body in an effortless way. 4 out of 10 people say that they are not happy with their bodies. 42% of people dislike their abdomen, followed by their thighs. Now, they can do something about this- in an easy way.
Thanks to our machines- high focused electromagnetic energy is used to induce supra-physiological muscle contractions to build muscle and burn fat. Supra-physiological means it is not possible to stimulate so many
TRUSTEES NEEDED (All Ages)
If you are interested in supporting elderly people, do you have 6 hours a month for a year or more, that you could give to a good cause?
Age Concern is expanding its services under new management, and following the pandemic, is looking for new Trustees. You might be a young adult from age 18 wanting to gain experience, someone a little older with time to spare, or a newly retired professional such as a doctor, solicitor, social worker or accountant, with proven experience, wanting to “give something back” to your community. Age Concern North Norfolk is a self-funded charity, based in Sheringham, working for the benefit of older people across central North Norfolk. It supports people aged 50+ (some with dementia) by providing a Day Services Hub, Meals on Heels and other services. You will be joining a team of dedicated people who will offer support and welcome your ideas.
fibres are exposed to electromagnetic energy. So these are involuntary contractions: much more powerful than the voluntary contractions. These are similar to the ones experienced during real exercise: stomach crunches and squats for the buttocks.
How does this compare to other muscle stimulating machines? This is more powerful than electrical muscle stimulation devices such as TENS machines or micro-current machines. Electrical devices can only stimulate superficial muscle fibres and are painful. Electro-magnetic devices do not require electrodes or needles and stimulate the whole muscles, which are subjected to intense contractions due to the magnetic field. So this is like exercise without exercising and you get more benefit than from intense exercises alone.
What happens during the treatment? You will be lying comfortably on the couch. Treatment applicator/s will be positioned over the muscles to be treated. You will feel pleasant sensation. There are muscle contractions but no pain. After 30 min the applicator/s will be removed and you will be able to resume normal activities immediately.
What precautions are needed during treatment? No electronic devices/ mobile phones/ jewellery or metal objects are permitted due to strong magnetic fields. You are welcome to bring a book/ magazine to read.
How many sessions are recommended? 4-6 sessions, two sessions a week.

‘Vivid reality’ of Eriksen’s sudden cardiac arrest shows just how fast you need to react to save a life • UK Coaching’s CEO Mark Gannon has said that Christian Eriksen’s collapse has shown just how fast you need to react in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest
• The charitable organisation has produced a free lifesaving digital learning toolkit – funded by Sport England – to help people know what to do in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest, potentially saving thousands of lives every year
The events of the match between Denmark and Finland on Saturday, 12 June, with Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest whilst playing, have put into perspective how essential it is that people involved in sport have the knowledge and confidence to respond quickly and appropriately in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).
UK Coaching, funded by Sport England and in collaboration with Resuscitation Council UK, St John Ambulance and Joe Humphries Memorial Trust, has produced a free toolkit to help people understand how to respond and act quickly to an SCA.
An SCA is when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops pumping blood around the body and vital organs due to an abnormal heart rhythm. Each year in the UK, approximately 60,000 people have an SCA out of hospital, with only 1 in 10 surviving.
If effective action is taken within the first minute, it can treble someone’s chance of survival.
Funded by Sport England, the toolkit is aimed at the sport and physical activity industry – from coaches to instructors, staff, spectators and parents – everyone can play a part in improving the chances of survival through the right information, training and support.
UK Coaching’s CEO Mark Gannon, said: “The vivid reality of Eriksen’s collapse and resuscitation last weekend have shown just how fast you need to react in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. It’s left many questioning if they would know what to do, where the nearest defib is, and most importantly the need to give everyone, from coaches to players, facility staff, parents and spectators, the knowledge and confidence to act fast – because every second really does count.
That’s why we’re encouraging all involved in sport to undertake the free online training, fully funded by Sport England – 30 minutes of your time could save a life. Both Martin Johnson and Fabrice Muamba feature within the interactive online course, and I’m very grateful for their support in helping us to raise awareness of the issue. Moving forward, every sporting venue must have an AED on site and sports should be making the course mandatory. Every person trained, could be another life saved.”
Steve Humphries, whose son Joe died of a cardiac arrest aged 14, started the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust in his memory and works tirelessly to raise awareness, imploring people to take training to know how to respond quickly and appropriately. Humphries, said: “Twelve people under the age of 30 die every week in the UK from SADS (Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome – that can cause a cardiac arrest). Some of these happen in front of coaches, during or shortly
after playing sport. My message for coaches is that there is a golden opportunity to save a life, should a sudden cardiac arrest happen in front of them.”
Patron of the Trust is England rugby legend Martin Johnson CBE, who has backed UK Coaching’s training and urged the British public to become a nation of life savers.
Johnson, said:“Being aware of sudden cardiac arrest and having a bit of training can make all the difference. I have heard some horrific stories and know that things could have turned out differently. Getting training is so vital and it is relatively easy to learn. Take UK Coaching’s online course so that if you find yourself in that moment, you will know what to do; and know that you are giving that person the best chance they have of survival.”
Adding to the call is former Bolton Wanderers midfielder and SCA survivor Fabrice Muamba, who experienced his ordeal in 2012, playing against Tottenham in the FA Cup quarter-finals in front of 30,000 football fans and a TV audience of millions.
Muamba, said: “Coaches are not expected to be as skilled as doctors, but it’s about knowing the fundamentals: getting someone to phone 999, starting CPR and using a defibrillator before the ambulance arrives. That will significantly increase someone’s chances of surviving a car diac arrest if one happens in your session, at an event or during a match.”
The toolkit is now available at ukcoaching.org and can be accessed in bitesize chunks. It includes: • practical information and advice • an immersive scenario-based eLearning course • a series of high impact and informative videos • insightful interviews and compelling written features with survivors, their coaches and victims’ families • signposting to further support.
Learners will receive a certificate for completing the eLearning and will be awarded ½ a Developmental CPD point by CIMSPA. SCAs can happen to anyone, anytime and anywhere. Learn how to save a life. www.ukcoaching.org/courses/elearningcourses/sudden-cardiac-arrest

Yesterday’s Books Yesterday’s Changes and Challenges
This is the sixth in the series and it could be the last. Remembering the realities of the nineteen fifties as they really were calls for someone of a certain age and the years begin to take their toll.
So, while we can, let’s revisit those days through this series of books which tell of the genuine joys and sorrows of the times. And Yesterday’s Changes and Challenges portrays 1956 as it was for ordinary people in the actual villages where we live. Poignant experiences are laced with humorous observations as the story takes us along reflectively through the year.
Our friends John and Ellen gain in maturity as they work and grow together ever more closely. George and Arthur, who work with John, and their families also find their lives facing change brought about by either time or desire. Even our old friends Charlie and Freda, faced with new challenges, have to face reality. Mr Whitlow, on whose farm they work, really is challenged by the changes in farming that are happening. So it is a story that will kindly charm and gently provoke as the pages turn.
The series of Yesterday’s books tells of life in a village near each of us in North Norfolk. Those fortunate to be friends of the books will know
that they chronicle the story of John who in Yesterday’s Loves and Laughter lived with his sister Freda in a farm cottage. He worked with his friends George, Arthur and Charlie for Mr Whitlow on his small farm. In that book Freda marries Charlie and John is left on his own.
However he met Ellen and in Hearts and Homes he marries her and sets up home in his little cottage which has neither electricity nor water. One of their neighbours, Robert Dennis decides in Yesterday’s Labours Lost to take over his father’s smallholding and his generation sees the last of the smallholders whose lore and language have been lost.
In Yesterday’s Fancies and Follies, the nineteen fifties wear on and there is time and opportunity for dreams to wander into forbidden territory and a chance for smiles and gossip. In Yesterday’s Worries and Wonders the story leads on to the middle of the decade. In the quiet days of the countryside and in a village sheltered from the main highways the people and their happenings are important to all of them. Illness comes to cause worries and medical facilities and social welfare are not as they are today and people are justifiably worried. Also wonderful things happen that give rise to happiness for many.
If these books are unknown to you and your interest has been sparked by this poster you may well want to read the previous books.
They are unique; there’s nothing else to compare with them.
Could they be an indulgence for yourself or a present for someone you love?

Meet your new lawyer: a robot by Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
The French existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre said, ‘Hell is other people’. ("L'enfer, c'est les autres"). So, if you don’t much like your solicitor, help is on its way. Meet your new lawyer: Robert the Robot!
Clients still want a lawyer they can relate to. The days of clients being amazed that the young woman standing before them was a real solicitor have gone. The old guard are no longer perturbed by their solicitor being from a different culture and religion than them. But are clients yet ready for a robot?
Sure, we will all have an advanced version of Siri who can answer our questions, in much the same way as many of us now turn to google. Doctors are under the same threat, as technology can be better at medical diagnosis than a human.
This Brave New World, dystopian vision of the future was described in the leading article in today’s (online!) Law Society Gazette. Just as I was pondering the subject matter of this month’s article, this popped into my inbox.
This bleak vision of a legal profession largely replaced by artificial intelligence (A.I.) and self-service legal advice has been published by a Law Society-sponsored initiative. The report, based on projections by a 'Delphi panel' of experts, forecasts a 'savage reduction' in full-time jobs by 2050. That’s okay, I’ll be 86 by then.
Those human lawyers who remain, will work alongside technology, and be required to take 'performance-enhancing medication in order to optimise their own productivity and effectiveness'. There have already been quips in the online responses about ‘litigator-strength coffee’. I hear that in high-octane spheres of the legal profession ‘performance-enhancing substances’ have long been as prevalent as in show-business.
China in the world economy, climate change and 'rising social movements and resurgence of the civil rights movement'. Law Society president has said: 'The legal profession is at a pivotal moment, as is the world in which we live. There are a plethora of forces shifting our collective experience and the business environment. If we’ve learnt anything from 2020, it’s that the future can still catch you unawares. She reckons that there is likely to be a rise of climate litigation against corporations or governments.
The report, Images of the Future Worlds Facing the Legal Profession 2020-2030, is the first fruit of the Society's Future Worlds 2050 project. The project aims to enable 'raw, frank and honest discussions around what clients will need in the future and to think about the legal business models our members may adopt', the Law Society said.
There is something to be said for working in the more people-centred section of the legal world. It is comforting to know that my 6 years of training and thirty years of post-qualification experience in the world of private client work makes me less likely to be replaced by a robot.
This 'Delphi panel' foresees surviving lawyers working alongside robots. Among the forecasts is a prediction that employment in the UK legal sector is already declining, following a peak in 2016. Not with private client work in north Norfolk, it ain’t.
This article is for general information only and does not constitute legal or professional advice. Please note that the law may have changed since this article was published.
The report also cites research suggesting that 85% of job concepts in 2030 do not yet exist, and half of people think that the roles and skills of the next two decades are impossible to predict within their industry'.

Theatre anti-racism project celebrates success
A theatre project exploring rural racism in Norfolk is being hailed as a huge success with a lasting legacy.
Rewriting Rural Racism, based at Sheringham Little Theatre, set out to highlight the issues of migration and diversity through youth workshops, a one-man show, and a series of films. But the numbers of people and organisations that got involved as the project evolved has far exceeded expectations. And the ideas it ignited are continuing well beyond the “final curtain” through extra sessions and dramas, as well as a widening of the host theatre’s horizons to make its programming and performers more diverse.
Project co-ordinator Katie Thompson said: “It’s been a lot larger than we thought it would ever be, which shows the importance of the anti-racism message, and that people were interested and engaged. “Delivering it through an arts setting made it more engaging and accessible and made people more comfortable to participate. And we are delighted our work will continue as a worthwhile legacy.”
Rewriting Rural Racism was delivered by a team of young performers from the Little Theatre who were keen, during the Black Lives Matter campaign, to show the challenges faced by migrants and people
of colour living in Norfolk.
Highlights flagged up in and end-of-project report are:
• Workshops – online sessions empowering young people from 16 schools and youth groups to learn and talk about race and other cultures. Extra sessions were tailored for dance students.
restrictions lift.
• We Are One – a series of short films looking at migrants’ stories and their contribution to the county. A planned 30 minute film grew to a 90 minute series due to interest and demand. It is planned to screen the films at the Inspiring Norfolk Festival. An animated timeline from the films is already being used as a teaching resource. • The Little Theatre also aims to make its shows more diverse including summer drama and the pantomime to reflect a broader spectrum of the community.

• Outskirts - a powerful one-man drama written and performed by actor Ashton Owen about the life of a mixed race boy in a mainly white community. Covid meant the drama moved online, which helped it reach further afield to London and the Midlands. It is also planned to tour the live show to schools when

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “Rewriting Rural Racism has been an exciting project by a group of talented and enthusiastic young people who are passionate about this topic.
“It has surpassed all our expectations and we have had terrific feedback from students, teachers and other people in the arts world. We also hope its legacy will shape people’s future thinking.”

PCC funding boost for local victim services to focus on children and older people More than £600,000 is to be invested in Norfolk's support services for people who have been affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence, thanks to extra funding secured by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk (OPCCN).
The money will come on top of funding already provided to victim support services through the OPCCN and the Ministry of Justice (MOJ).
Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) are responsible for providing specialist victim support services in their police force area and receive annual funding from the MOJ. PCCs also have the opportunity to bid for additional funding being made available by the MOJ and other government departments.
In the latest funding round, £620,983 in additional MOJ funding has been secured by the OPCCN to enhance support services for victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence in Norfolk, with a particular focus on supporting children and older people. [1]
A third of the extra funding will be used to help local services deliver support to children who are experiencing domestic abuse or are affected by such abuse in the household, as well as victims of sexual abuse and child sexual abuse.
A total of £171,412 of the fund will go to Leeway https://www.leewaysupport.org/ Domestic Abuse and Violence Services, the Daisy Programme https://www.daisyprogramme.org.uk/ and Fresh Start New Beginnings https://www.fsnb.org.uk/ to help pay for specialist support workers and services for children and young people. In addition to this, newly elected PCC Giles Orpen-Smellie, is adding an extra £25,796 from his commissioning budget - meaning the organisations will share in a pot of £197,208.
A further £345,371 will be split between Daisy, Leeway and West-Norfolk based DA charity the Pandora Project https://www.pandoraproject.org.uk/, to boost Norfolk's response to domestic abuse.
system. Last year the OPCCN secured funding from the Home Office for two full time and one part-time Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (ISVA's) to help bolster Norfolk's Sexual Abuse Referral Centre (SARC) - the Harbour Centre.
The final amount of £104,200 will ensure the OPCCN can continue to fund this vital service provided by the SARC - with a particular focus on helping 'hidden' victims and those with protected characteristics to access help and support. [2]
So-called 'hidden' or 'hard to reach' victims may include those from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups (BAME), people who have a disability, or members of the LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) community.
Announcing the MOJ funding award, Norfolk PCC Giles Orpen-Smellie said: "Over the course of my election campaign and during my first few weeks in office, I have become increasingly aware of not only the great work being done by our local victim support services, but also the level of demand for their help from those affected by crimes such as domestic and sexual abuse. This extra funding secured by my office will provide a great boost to our local services and the tailored support they can offer to victims of crime.
"As PCC, I am committed to putting victims first. I will do everything I can to support Norfolk's victim support services to cope with demand and respond to the needs of victims so that, regardless of their age, gender or background, those affected by crime get the right support."

Ride for Life across Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire returns
All the beauty of the East Anglian countryside awaits cyclists who sign up to ride three counties in three days as part of a returning charity challenge.
Ride for Life, back from Friday, 8 October to Sunday, 10 October, sees participants covering over 200 miles to raise thousands of pounds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
The first day starts at Johnston Logistics UK, the event sponsor in Snetterton, heads to The Nook, EACH’s hospice just south of Norwich, then down to Ipswich. The second takes riders
past The Treehouse, EACH’s hospice in Ipswich, and across to Cambridge. The final day passes EACH’s hospice in Milton, just north of Cambridge, before heading back to Snetterton.
Ride for Life has been a flagship event for EACH since 1993, with Johnston Logistics UK sponsoring it since the inception. This year’s staging is in memory of Richard Johnston, the founder of Johnston Logistics UK who sadly died in December 2018.
Rob McIndoe, Johnston Logistics UK Director, said: “As I found out in 2018, Ride for Life is a tough three-day cycling challenge, but it’s definitely worth the effort! EACH is very close to our hearts and there are few more important causes than supporting children and their families through such difficult times. It’s even more of an honour this year as it’s in memory of our founder, Richard Johnston, who was a dedicated supporter of the children’s hospices.”

Becky Redbond, EACH Events Fundraising Manager, said: “We’re so excited for the return of Ride for Life. After all the time in lockdown over the last year, there has perhaps never been a better time to get out around the region and enjoy the stunning countryside scenes.
“This year’s event is, once again, sponsored by Johnston Logistics UK and it’s absolutely fitting for it to be taking place in memory of Richard, who was a truly dedicated EACH supporter.

“The sponsorship over the years has enabled many friendships to be forged and great memories to be made, and I’m sure this year will be no different. Of course, it’s also enabled a huge amount of money to go towards care and support for some of the region’s most vulnerable families.
“The event is both suitably challenging for experienced cyclists and fun for newer ones. There’s the possibility to sign up for just one day as opposed to the full three, too.”
Registration for the three days is £100, with participants expected to target £600 sponsorship. Registration for a day is £30, with a £150 sponsorship target.
Cyclists will benefit from a fully signed route, a back-up vehicle for the journey, mechanical support, refreshments, lunches and first aid assistance, plus receive a medal upon finishing. For more information and to get involved visit www.each.org.uk/rideforlife2021.

The long-term effect of delays in surgery caused by Covid-19
A study published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia has found that, in 2020, hospitals in England and Wales carried out 1.5 million fewer surgical procedures in 2020 by comparison to average figures over the previous 4 years, a drop of more than a third.
The effect of the Covid-19 pandemic, which resulted in the postponement of planned, non-urgent surgery in April and again in December 2020 had a significant effect, but there was also a 13.4% reduction in the number of emergency surgical procedures.
Researchers are concerned at the long-term effects on patients whilst hospitals attempt to resolve the backlog in elective surgeries, which is likely to take several years even with significant additional investment by the government. The study commented "Delays in the diagnosis and the surgical management of cancer will undoubtedly lead to an increase in cancer-related mortality."
Although the NHS disputes the way in which the study interpreted the data
collected, it continues to encourage patients to access services when required, as normal.
It is likely that care for patients with serious conditions other than cancer, such as diseases affecting the heart, lungs and other organs, will also be affected. Researchers also believe that patients' mental health is likely to deteriorate whilst they remain on waiting lists.
Delays in diagnosis and treatment could lead to an increase in claims against GP surgeries, hospitals and other healthcare providers. In addition, as clinical staff work harder to clear the backlogs, pressure and the potential for mistakes in care will also increase.
Clinical negligence claims are frequently complex, and it is important that anyone considering such a claim seeks advice at the earliest opportunity.

All you want to know about weeds and controlling them!
Since we have had the rain and sun, the gardens and allotments have gone growing mad.
Even before the rain, it is always the weeds that seem to grow. Do you like a clean weed free garden or are you prepared for weeds to grow alongside and flourish as well, that is the question?
Some gardens seem to attract unwanted plants! So, what is a weed? Well there have been many definitions, however boiling it down; “a weed is a plant out of place”, a kinder definition is that of “Nature….. knows no plant as a weed”. Therefore, if you like the plant it is not a weed, if you don't want it in your garden then it is a weed. If that is the case, then a weed is defined as a plant growing where it is not wanted!
Weeds or plants not wanted in the garden can actually tell you much about your soil type, so if you look closely at what weeds are growing such as:- nettles, buttercup, groundsel, chickweed, shepherd’s purse all denote a light dry soil, whereas cowslips, creeping buttercup, goosegrass, plantain and silverweed denotes a heavy moist clay soil. Limey soils will have horseshoe vetch, lamb’s lettuce, oxeye daisy, wild carrot and yarrow to name a few. It is good to look at what is growing and thriving, as it will give you a good indication of soil type and minerals in the soil.
We also need to look at the weeds and identify them much more closely, as they will either be annual weeds such as scarlet pimpernel or perennial - in other words they come back each year, docks being one such plant. The other major issue is to deal with the weeds before
they seed, so to be able to weed out the plants, hoe or mulching is much more effective, as you will find that when these plants do seed, they will scatter in the case of the dock up to 50,000 seeds. Some will be born on the wind, others scattered by birds, whilst some can even be used as bedding by ants and taken under ground.
One such weed that is now worldwide and can be seen on local allotments all over the country, is Gallant Soldier (Galinsoga parviflora), it escaped from Kew gardens in 1860 and was found in Richmond. It had been brought to this country from Mexico where it was used as a herb. It comes up in late April early May when the weather warms up and unless you deal with it, it will flower and seed between May and November every four weeks, seeding between 5,000 and 30,000 seeds each time.
So how can we deal with these weeds or plants? Firstly, if we consistently hoe once a week through the growing season, cutting or removing their leaves, no plant can survive as you will constantly be weakening it and the plant will die. This refers mainly to annuals. However, if the plant is being reinforced by other growth, that is not being cut i.e.: Bind weed, it will recover and continue to grow.
Therefore, we need to think about other methods of weed control. Digging out or forking out is one method. A mulch of grass cuttings, cardboard or paper covered with further mulching can be effective as it will stop the light and therefore the plant will not grow. If you have a new bed, allotment or piece of land

you want to clear then black polythene sheeting will be very effective in helping to clean the land. i.e., removing all living growth. You could use carpet, however, make sure it is woollen and not rubber backed, they can contain fungicides such as moth repellants, so be aware.
During dry periods, I have used weeds to my advantage, leaving them between rows of young seedlings, this creates shade and moisture in the mornings, enabling the seedlings to grow on through the dry period.
Finally, there are the pernicious weeds, such as mare’s tail (picture), bind weed, couch grass and ground elder, these are weeds that you need to fork out or they will spread. You cannot put these directly onto the compost heap, as they will recover and grow again.
You can deal with them in two ways, either use an old plastic dustbin that will contain water or a black plastic sack that will hold moisture. Place the pernicious weeds or weeds with seed heads in either container and let them rot down, then place the contents on the compost heap. In doing this you have dealt with potential seeds and the weed and gained the nutrients.
A friend of mine once said never walk around the garden without a hoe in your hand! Or else “Give weeds an inch and they’ll take over your Yard” Chris Wright

24/7 air ambulance flying started 30 June, becoming first in East of England
Wednesday 30 June was a landmark moment for East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) and the provision of emergency critical care in the region, as the charity starts flying 24/7 for the very first time.
The gap between 1:30 am and 7am where there has been no helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) coverage in the region will now be closed, as EAAA becomes the first air ambulance in the East of England to fly 24 hours a day.
body. His injuries were classed as lifethreatening and without the enhanced interventions of the air ambulance team, he would not have made it to hospital.
Fortunately, the team were able to stabilise Chris enough to be moved and he was flown to the major trauma centre at Addenbrooke’s for specialist treatment. Chris’ injuries were extensive and included three bleeds on the brain, several spinal fractures, including some damage to his spinal cord, a fractured pelvis, broken left shoulder blade, hip and ankle and several broken ribs on his right side. He has since suffered double vision, slurred speech and had to learn to walk and talk again. Despite these severe injuries, Chris has shown true grit and determination to recover, and this August is planning to cycle 435 miles, known as the Adrian Flux Lap of Anglia, to help raise vital funds for EAAA. Chris was also recently voted EAAA’s Most Inspirational Patient for 2021 for his inspiring recovery and attitude to life.
Becoming a 24/7 service for East Anglia has been a long-term ambition of the charity, with the initial research for expanding to a 24/7 operation taking place four years ago. Since then, EAAA has taken gradual steps towards achieving this ambition, which importantly included raising an extra million pounds a year to fund the additional operating hours, increasing its car cover to 24/7, building a new operational base and now 24/7 flying.
Chris said: “I’m still not 100% but I know how close I came to dying and I’m just so, so glad that I didn’t and so grateful to the East Anglian Air Ambulance that they were there to Chris Marshall EAAA has two critical care teams, Anglia One and Credit: Chris Taylor save my life. Trek 24 events To further support EAAA’s 24/7 operation, three 24-mile or 24-kilometre fundraising treks will be taking place around the region this summer.
Join Trek 24 Suffolk Coast and Country on Saturday 14 August, Trek 24 The Chilterns Challenge on Saturday 4 September or Trek 24 Norfolk Coast Path on Sunday 12 September to help fund EAAA’s 24/7 service. For more information, go to: www.trek-24.co.uk

Stay Safe This Summer
Summer holidays are coming, and we are expecting more people than ever to visit our beaches and inland waterways. The RNLI, HM Coastguard and Broads Authority are all working to keep people safe near water.
Below you will find hints to help keep you and your family safe. Please cut this article out and keep it; it may just save you or your family’s lives.
On the beach or any body of water Be prepared • Stay close to a friend or family member • Plan for your activity • Find a safe place to go • Be able to swim and float. Stay close to a friend or family member. Always go with someone else when you go into or near water. Friends or family can help in an emergency.
The water is powerful: It’s not what you’re used to in a swimming pool. • The water is moving. • The water is colder than you think. • The edge can be dangerous.
STAY SAFE
ENJOY YOUR TIME AT THE COAST
• Carry a means of calling for help and keep it protected and attached to you at all times. • Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. • Check the weather and tide times. • Read signs and be aware of local hazards.
IN AN EMERGENCY call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
KNOW WHAT TO DO SEARCH: RESPECT THE WATER Photo: RNLI/Nigel Millard
The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea Royal National Lifeboat Institution, a charity registered in England and Wales (209603) and Scotland (SC037736). Registered charity number 20003326 in the Republic of Ireland

• There might be dangers under the water. The water is moving water around our coasts and in rivers is always moving. • Rips are strong currents running out to sea that can easily take swimmers out beyond their depth. Know what to do if you get caught in one. • Tides cause a rise and fall in sea level. Check times of high and low tide so you don't get cut off. • Unexpected waves can quickly sweep people off their feet, even on a calm day. Keep an eye on the water and don't go too close to the water’s edge • If you're in trouble in a rip current: If you can stand, walk, don’t swim.If you have a board or inflatable, you should keep hold of it to help you float. Raise your hand and shout for help. Never try and swim against the rip or you'll get exhausted. Swim parallel to the beach until you are free of it then make for shore
Our advice for tidal cut off: • Always check the tide times and heights and keep a look out for incoming tide. Use tide timetables or a tidal prediction app like AnyTide. Make sure you have enough time to return safely. If in doubt, seek local advice. • Always carry a means of calling for help on your person. Call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard if you are in danger or you see someone in danger of being cut off by the tide. • Tell someone else where you’re going and when you’ll be back. They can raise the alarm with the coastguard by calling 999 or 112 if you are overdue
BEACH SAFETY Know your flags • Red and Yellow flags Lifeguard areas, safe areas to swim, bodyboard and use inflatables • Black and White cheqered flags are for surfboards, stand up paddleboards, kayaks and other non-powered craft. Launch and recovery area for kitesurfers and wind surfers. Never swim or bodyboard here. • Red flags Danger! Never go in the water under any circumstances when the Red Flag is flying • Orange Windsock Indicates offshore or strong winds. Never use inflatables when the windsock is flying.
Inflatables • Blow-up toys and airbeds are designed for pools, not the sea where they can easily be blown offshore. If you must use them at the beach, then: • ensure children are closely supervised • keep nearby • only use between the red and yellow flags • follow the lifeguards' advice • do not take out in big waves • do not use when the orange windsock is flying, as this indicates offshore wind
What to do if a child goes missing • Calmly check the surroundings first, ensuring other children remain supervised. • Contact the lifeguards or police and keep them informed. • Let all searchers know once the child is found

News from the Club house
Cromer Marrams bowling green on Runton Road is ready to welcome you to join us. Come and try a game for free, all equipment provided. You can’t beat our cliff top location to revitalise you on a sunny Cromer day!
The playing membership subscription is now £30 inclusive and social membership £15. Visitor roll up green fees are £3.50 per 2-hour session. Sessions are available morning, afternoon and evening every day of the week from now until late September.
Garage Wanted - Cromer
For storage of a car, preferably within walking distance of Cromer hospital. Must have continued unobstructed access, would like a driveway but not essential. Would consider some remedial work if run down. Straight cash purchase preferred, would consider longer term rental also. Please contact James 07834 720093 in first instance.
The bar is open for drinking inside or outside (covid restrictions allowing) on Fridays from 7pm. Drinks at club prices!
We have played another ‘spoon drive’ with 18 members involved. There was a change to the winners with ‘new boy’ Steve H winning with a plus 31 score, followed by Gary Y and Bob K with plus 20 scores.
The club match Ladies v Gentlemen was played on a triples ‘spoon drive’ format with Jane C gaining the winning score of plus 22. Another club ‘spoon drive’ was won by Jean N and Paul C. The friendly game at Horsham St. Faith BC was played on an interesting green which the hosts were obviously more used to. They won on all 3 rinks.
For al spo your l r ts in N gea Nor orth r folk
This was followed by the visit of Longthorpe BC in the annual ‘Crab Trophy’ challenge. Cromer struggled to field a full team and suffered the consequences losing the trophy by a 1-5 rink score, 83 points to 105. The winning rink was David Gr, George B and Tabitha E. Unfortunately, our visit to Watton BC fell victim to the weather.
Indoor & Outdoor Sports Equipment and Clothing
The men visited near neighbours Suffield Park in the NBA league but lost 1½ points to 2½. Bob A, Keith P, Marc S and Roger G won 22-18 and Roger O, John Br, James P and Nigel C drew 14-14. In the Fermoy Cup against Caister ‘A’ we were beaten at home 13-18 and away 12-22. Next up was a home game versus Fakenham. For most of the game Cromer led, but two rinks lost their winning lead on the final end to lose 16-17 and draw 20-20. The other rink lost 18-20. So, a final very disappointing score of ½ to 4½. However, the visit to Carters brought an unexpected 3-2 victory, 64 shots to 63. The winning rink, by 30-11, was Stuart M, Steve H, David Be and Neil P. The re-arranged Federation match with Cawston ‘B’ was played in horribly wet conditions but Cromer won convincingly 9-0, 68 shots to 31. Ian H, Neil C and Nigel C won 28-11, Keith P, James P and Roger O won 18-14 and John B, Steve H and Neil P won 22-6. The next game at home to Sheringham Morley was a defeat 2-7, 37 shots to 57. Cromer’s winning rink was Bob A, Keith P and Gary Y, 15-9. We then visited Swanton Morley and gained a 7-2 victory, 66 points to 30. Winning rinks were Bob A, Philip E and Roger G, 30-4, and Roger O, Neil C and Nigel C, 24-10. The home fixture against Holt Tawny Owls gave Cromer a 7-2 win, by 44 shots to 42. Winning rinks were Ian H, John Br and Neil P, 15-13, and Neil C, Steve H and James, 17-15.
The first game of the season for the NANSA league team was at home to Sheringham Morley and was a 6-0, 42 shots to 27 victory. Philip E, Brenda S and Stuart M won 22-9 and Jean N, Andrew H and David Mo won 20-18 on the final end. This was followed by a visit to New Road at North Walsham for a 2-4 points loss, 36-39 shot score. The winning rink was Brenda S, Philip E and Jackie P. The next game at home to Cawston ‘A’ led to a 0-6 defeat and was followed by another 0-6 defeat at home to West Runton BC.
