4.Torchlight Procession

5. VE day lunch

On Thursday 2nd of June we had a street party at 3:30pm followed by a spectacular Spitfire

Flypast and Display by over Pier.

Next was an LED torchlight procession from Cromer Church which preceded the lighting of the beacons at Runton Road Car Park.

2. Pier Spitfire Flypast

At 9pm The Town Crier and Mayor worked hard to warm up the crowd as the procession arrived. Then at 9:50 the beacon was lit to the accompaniment of the local mass choir singing The Song for The Commonwealth and great cheers and applause.

On Saturday 4th June there were VE day celebrations, including a lunch in the honour of the VE day veterans of Halsey House.

3. Beacon Lighting at Runton Road

A spectacular service at Cromer Church involving cannons that blasted hundreds of confetti-like paper discs capped off the celebrations on Sunday the 5th.

Not the Roundabout but the… Interactive Magic Table

A Note from the editor I hope you all enjoyed the Platinum Jubilee weekend, despite the mixed weather. Everyone certainly got into the celebratory mood, and I suspect, probably ate a little too much cake as I did!

Age Concern North Norfolk can now offer the latest technology for interactive stimulation - the portable digital Mobii unit, (otherwise known as the Magic Table!) funded by generous donations from the Poors and Ploughlet Trust, R.C. Snelling Charitable Trust, Norfolk Community Foundation and NNDC Arts and Cultural Fund. The unit projects interactive pictures onto a table or floor mat such as a water activity (imitating the surface of water with ripples and fish tha scatter with the movement of a hand); or ball games for a competitive activity. The games encourage clients, particularly people living with dementia to interact in as they are able, using movement, visual and vocal responses. The interaction is calming and relaxing as well as fun and enjoyable.

As you will see in the magazine, there are lots more events taking place in the coming weeks with summer fetes, open gardens, fundays and many more. With improving weather (hopefully) and school holidays approaching fast, there is plenty to see and do. Keep an eye on the forthcoming events column and support your local community as we all enjoy getting back to normal after the last two years. Our beaches are starting to get busier and judging by the number if RNLI reports coming through, it is worth a mention to be safe in and on the water, if you are walking on the beach, check the tide times before you set out to avoid being cut off by the tide. Visit the RNLI website rnli.org/safety for more advice on staying safe.

We hope to use this equipment on a regular basis within the day centre and due to its portability, we can use it in other venues or for other community groups. The interactive table will increase the range of resources which we are able to use in the day centre which stimulate all the senses for people with cognitive difficulties. We can also download our own pictures and more personalised content to the system, such as family pictures of clients.

Whatever you are up to, enjoy your June magazine.

Jo – Editor.

Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines: Month July August September

We like to ensure every day at the centre is as varied and interesting as possible and if you would like to try a Taster Day yourself, please ring Alison on 01263 821188 to arrange it.

LASTING LASTING P OWERS OF OF ATTORNEY ATTORNEY POWERS

Why are Lasting Powers of Attorney so important?

It is a common misconception that a spouse/family member has an automatic entitlement to make decisions fo or you if you lose mental capacity short or long term, but that is not true. To protect you and your loved ones against a short or long term situation where your husband, wife, partner, children cannot make decisions for you, we highly recommend that you contact us to book a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT to discuss putting Lasting Powers of Attorney in place.

There are 2 different types of Lasting Powers of Attorney – one for financial and property decisions and the other for health and care decisions. Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney can be likened to the purchase of a home insurance policy. You hope that your house won’t burn down, but if it did, then knowing that you have house insurance in place can make a real difference in putting your mind at ease. We are all living longer and statistics show that 1 in 3 of us will develop dementia. Covid and lockdowns have made Lasting Powers of Attorney even more important, especially if you become housebound or are isolating. It is vital to release the burden from loved ones to allow them to access your money and pay for your care. Banks can freeze accounts if capability is lost, even if in joint names.

A Lasting Power of Attorney negates these issues and gives you and your loved ones peace of mind.

Please contact us to make a F R E E F I R S T A P P O I N T M E N T to discuss this further. We offer home visits at no extra cost.

HM The Queen ‘Touched’ by Miracle Foal Named in Her Honour Horse Sanctuary in April, which has been named ‘Monarch’ to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

HM The Queen was ‘touched’ by Redwings’ naming of miracle foal ‘Monarch’, in honour of her Platinum Jubilee.

The charity wrote to Her Majesty to inform her of the arrival of the colt in April, born safe and healthy to his mother ‘Majesty’ who had been involved in a road accident whilst pregnant. A letter from Buckingham Palace reads:

“The Queen has asked me to thank you for your recent letter in which you informed Her Majesty of the birth of a colt foal at Redwings

“Her Majesty is touched by this gesture as well as your kind words of congratulations, and I am to thank you for your thoughtfulness in writing to her as you did. This letter comes to you, and to all at Redwings Horse Sanctuary, with The Queen’s warm good wishes.”

Lynn Cutress, chief executive of Redwings, said: “We’re thrilled to have received this letter from Buckingham Palace. It’s wonderful to have received Her Majesty’s good wishes. We very much hope she has enjoyed her special weekend.”

Majesty and Monarch Monarch was turned out on grass for the first time with his mum last week, just in time to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee, and video of the pair shows them frolicking and galloping in their new field at one of Redwings’ Norfolk sites.

11-year-old Hackney-type Majesty, who is 14.1hh, was found stuck in some railings on the central reservation at Tilbury Docks, Essex after an accident in November. She was taken to a private boarding establishment and treated for a broken nose and chest injuries. On realising that she was also in foal, Redwings was asked to take her, and offered her a forever home in February.

Nicola Berryman, Redwings Welfare Veterinary Surgeon, who is overseeing the welfare of the pair said: “It’s wonderful to see them both doing so well. Monarch is a strapping boy, who’s growing quickly and will soon tower over his mum! We were all overjoyed when Monarch was born, and we know those who have followed their story so far will love to see them galloping together and frolicking in their new field.”

Monarch was born in the early hours of Thursday 7th April, making him almost two months old now, and he and his mum, and two other mares who came into Redwings’ care whilst in foal and went on to have beautiful babies, are the faces of Redwings’ summer fundraising appeal.

For more information call 07470 931758 www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

As a charity 100% funded by donations, it is thanks to the generosity of its supporters that Redwings is able to take in and care for horses like Majesty and Monarch.

If you’d like to make a donation, please call 01508 505246 or visit www.redwings.org.uk/donate. Cromer Times June 2022

Cromer Church Poppy Display

A project that was 2 years in the waiting, provided a spectacle at Cromer Church over the Platinum Jubilee weekend. The installation, inspired by the similar display at The Tower of London in 2014 to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the beginning of the First World War, was the brainchild of Cromer Town Council clerk Julie Chance and together with Sue Mears of The Sticky Earth Café in Cromer the 4500 ceramic poppies were made and installed by volunteers.

The Cromer display was originally planned for 2019 to remember the fallen of the Second World War, including purple poppies and a wicker horse to remember the animals killed in both World Wars. Due to the pandemic, it was delayed until this year.

The poppies are available to buy at clerk@cromer-tc.gov.uk

Andrew’s Zany New Radio Show

As well as his podcast stories, North Walsham storyteller Andrew Brammer now has a fortnightly radio show of Stumpy Sanderson’s 1970s Stories on the North Norfolk community radio station Poppyland Radio. The show is a zany and madcap look back at the 1970s through the eyes of some of the main characters from Andrew’s highly popular tales. “The radio show is great fun and it’s really exciting to be able to broadcast about the world of Stumpy Sanderson on the airwaves. Hopefully, as with the podcasts, people can listen in for some laughs, music and good old humorous nostalgia”, said Andrew.

Andrew decided to start bringing back his Stumpy Sanderson tales as podcasts last year, having originally performed them between 2009 and 2014 at theatres and venues in the UK and Ireland. The stories tell of the outlandish japes, scrapes and capers that a group of mischievous working-class boys got up to and into while growing up in the 1970s, and this time there are also some humorous songs to accompany the tales. Two new episodes come out at the end of every month.

LANGHAM DOME MUSEUM IS FINALLY OPEN FOR THE 2022 SEASON!

Things seemed to go more smoothly this season with none of the horrid Covid restrictions haunting us at every turn. We’re still very aware that Covid is with us, so we are still recommending face coverings inside the Dome as we have no ventilation and very little air-circulation. We are also restricting the visitor numbers inside to no more than 30 at one time.

We had an exciting start with John Travolta being in North Norfolk to make a short film called The Shepherd which was being shot at West Raynham. We tried REALLY hard to get him to visit, but without success! Apparently, Frederick Forsyth's novel may have had RAF Langham in mind as the base that the lost Vampire jet flew out of in 1957?!

One of our Trustees, John Clark, thought that it was important to show support for the brave people of the Ukraine. So we are, as are many others, flying the Ukrainian flag at the Dome to remind us all of the tragedy that continues

in that beautiful country

We had a visit from a very interesting lady, Helen Tempest, who is a famous Wing-Walker, formerly with AeroSuperBatics! She was a guest of our Vice-Chairman and Trustee Henry Labouchere, who is well known in the area and is very often seen flying through the skies of North Norfolk in his wonderful yellow Tiger Moth! He brought her along to introduce her to the fascinating history of The Langham Dome.

The Dome was the destination for another group of Classic Cars, this time from Cromer. It was National Ride-It Day, when classic car owners are encouraged to get their beautiful vehicles out onto the road and enjoy the sunshine (hopefully!). They spent a lovely time both inside the Dome and drinking coffee under the Spitfire in the Memorial Gardens. Our large easy access car park makes it a popular site for rides out.

The Dome has finally been redecorated and is looking quite resplendent in its new grey

livery!

Don’t forget that we are running our Grand Cash Draw this season. First Prize is £500, Second Prize £250, Third Prize £100, Fourth and Fifth Prizes are both £50.

Please help support The Dome, our and your unique historical building, by buying tickets and be in with a chance of winning some cash!

Tickets are available from the Dome and Jacqueline’s Shoe Shop, High St, Sheringham. Please email me at manager@langhamdome.org if you would like to buy online.

Thank you and Good Luck!

Become a Community First Responder in Cromer My name is Nathan and I am the Coordinator for Cromer Community First Responders

As a Community First Responder you work alongside the East of England Ambulance Service attending 999 calls. We are trained by the Ambulance Service to attend certain types of life-threatening calls in our community that are within the scope of our training. Incidents that CFRs can respond to range from cardiac arrests, strokes, breathing problems, diabetic emergencies and falls.

As a Community First Responder we are supplied with one set of kit from the ambulance service any additional kit has to be funded by the community. Cromer has two kits ready to use. As CFRs we give up our free time to cover Cromer and the local area providing as much cover as we possibly can. With the NHS under extreme pressure at the moment, a Community First Responder arriving FIRST can make a difference between Life and Death.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO YOUR COMMUNITY Become a COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDER

A few tips to help the Ambulance service and CFRs find your house or location rapidly: ● When it is DARK leave as many lights on as possible, it catches the eye. ● If you’re up an alley or long drive, leave your cars hazard lights on. ● Can someone be on the roadside looking out for us?

Sheringham and District Philatelic Society

On May 9th, those present were treated to 3 very different aspects of philately by fellow members, making for a worthwhile evening. Tony Taylor told us about his recently discovered interest in collecting penny reds. This came about through the wonderful gift of time during the 2020 Lockdown and his decision to explore his untouched 30 year of collection of GB stamps. He briefly explained what is behind the huge range in valuation of this one particular stamp and he was invited to talk to the Society at a later date, in more detail.

Jill Pilgrim showed us her eclectic collection of envelopes that she had gathered over the last few years. She presented them in categories e.g. railways, aviation anniversaries, postal strike cancellations, and many had interesting stories behind them. Finally, Jane Purkiss brought items illustrating the range covered by her Australian collection such as sailing ships and the lives and voyages of explorers, and also from the Cook Islands

The next meeting will be on July 11th at West Runton Church Hall. 7.30pm. Do come along or contact Gerry Smith on 01263 579529 for further information

North Norfolk Railway Receives The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

Volunteers at the North Norfolk Railway which runs magnificently restored steam and heritage diesel trains between Sheringham and Holt have just been awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.

The railway operates along 5½ miles of restored track from Sheringham to Weybourne and Holt with almost all the tasks necessary to run the trains being carried out by a team of around 300 dedicated volunteers. The line is one of the county’s most popular tourist attractions, welcoming around 165,000 passengers per annum with steam trains running daily from April to October.

The North Norfolk Railway is one of 244 local charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. Their work, along with others from across the UK, reminds us of all the ways in which fantastic volunteers are contributing to their local communities and working to make life better for those around them.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by local volunteer

groups to benefit their communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Recipients are announced each year on 2nd June, the anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation. Award winners this year are wonderfully diverse. They include volunteer groups from across the UK, including: a rural support group for farmers in Shropshire; a community magazine addressing isolation in the Western Isles; a running club engaging all ages in County Tyrone; a film academy and community hub based in South Wales, and a food bank in Greater London feeding vulnerable individuals and providing training opportunities.

Representatives of the railway will receive the award crystal and certificate from The Lady Dannatt, MBE, Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk later this summer. In addition, two volunteers from the line will attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2023 along with other recipients of this year’s Award.

Hugh Harkett, Managing Director, said ‘We are very proud to receive this Award, our volunteers really are the life blood of the Railway, and we are

continually thankful for their dedication and support. The North Norfolk Railway is a not-for-profit enterprise, so the support of volunteers is really crucial to our survival and we are delighted that the fantastic contribution they make has been recognised in this way.

He added, “The railway is always looking for new volunteers and we have a Volunteer Showcase this Saturday for potential new recruits where they can see how the Railway runs and have the opportunity to talk to experienced volunteers about how they can get involved.”

Those interested in attending on Saturday June 4 are asked to get in touch with the Railway by email via enquiries@ nnrailway.co.uk or by phone by 01632 820800, option 4 then 1. The Railway is particularly looking for volunteers to help with welcoming visitors and inspecting tickets, assisting in the gift shops and buffets and also helping run the ever-popular dining trains.

Full details of the event and the North Norfolk Railway’s daily services can be found at www.nnrailway.co.uk.

North Norfolk Photographic Society – ‘Coincidence’

At the final print competition held on May 18th there was a strange coincidence with the judge Wayne Davey.

Wayne Davey and Print

During the evening a print came up which bore a striking likeness to the judge. Wayne has a very similar beard and quickly entered into the spirit of things by putting on his cap so that he looked like the man in the image entitled the Old Veteran.

Wayne was very impressed by both the standard of images and the variety of subject matter, which ranged from wildlife and landscape to buildings, flowers and abstract. He held back many images for Donegal Seascape by Liz Akers a second look but in the end awarded Gold to only 2 prints. The photographic Society meets on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at Cley Village Hall. The next meeting on June 1st will be an insight into judging by member Paul Radden who will be using the opportunity to explain what judges look for in images.

Details of all results are on the website which is https://nnps.uk/results. There are also contact details and galleries The Light and the Dark by of some of the members so if you are interested, why not take a look? Val Walker.

Meet and Shoot at Blakeney

Being a member of a Photographic Society is not all about competitions and speakers but also about getting out with your camera and having some social interaction with other members. This is exactly what happened on a pleasant evening on May 4th when a group of members went to Blakeney Quay. We are fortunate to have some stunning locations near to us in North Norfolk.

Blakeney Quay by Heather Green

The images below are just a small sample but there are many more on the Club website page which is Gallery |

Some images have been processed into monochrome, which you will see is just as effective as colour in some situations. The quayside was very popular and there was an interesting sky to be photographed directly or in the reflections.

Case Study: Making a Lasting Power of Attorney after a Diagnosis of Dementia

There are two different types of Lasting Powers of Attorney. One relates to 'Property and Financial Affairs' and the other relates to 'Health and Welfare'. Both Lasting Powers of Attorney appoint trusted people (attorneys) to act on a person's behalf should they lose the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves regarding financial matters or general welfare. A Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney appoints

attorneys to make a range of decisions about finances, including the buying and selling of property, operating a bank account, dealing with tax affairs and claiming benefits.

A Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney appoints attorneys to make

decisions regarding where you should live, day-to-day care, and whether to consent or refuse consent to medical treatment on a person's behalf.

Case Study – Michael

Michael has recently been diagnosed with dementia. Although he often shows signs of confusion and can be forgetful, his diagnosis is at the initial stage and is mainly unrecognisable. Michael's daughter Emily is concerned as Michael does not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place; meaning, no one has the legal authority to look after his finances when he is no longer able to do this himself, or to ensure his medical and care preferences are carried out.

A person who has been diagnosed with dementia is still able to make a Lasting Power of Attorney provided they have sufficient mental capacity to understand the nature and implications of the power they are giving to their attorneys.

In this instance, as Michael is in the early stages of dementia he is still in a position where he is able to make a Lasting Power of

Attorney. Therefore, Emily encourages him to make an appointment with a legal professional to start the process as soon as possible.

When attending the initial appointment with the solicitor, Michael is able to bring Emily with him for support and to settle any nerves. However, the solicitor will ask Emily to leave the room when taking Michael's instructions to ensure that these are Michael's own instructions and that he is not being unduly influenced in any way. During this initial appointment the solicitor will ensure that Michael understands his options, the responsibility and power that he is giving to his attorneys, and how the Lasting Powers of Attorney should be used.

For individuals living with dementia at a more advanced stage than Michael, during the appointment the solicitor can assess whether the person has sufficient capacity to make a Lasting Power of Attorney. If the solicitor has concerns about a person's capacity they can ask the person's GP to assist.

Following the initial meeting, Michael is provided with draft Lasting Powers of Attorney so he can see exactly what the documents look like and to give him the opportunity to consider whether there is anything else he would like to add. Once satisfied with the Lasting Powers of Attorney, Michael visits his solicitor for another appointment where they would go through the documents together ensuring that Michael fully understands the content and to answer any remaining questions he may have.

Once Michael has signed the Lasting Powers of Attorney, the attorneys are required to sign the documents to confirm they understand their responsibilities and to

confirm that they accept their appointment. The solicitor sends information to the attorneys on what their responsibilities will be to assist their understanding. If they have any queries they are then able to contact the solicitor.

As the Lasting Powers of Attorney cannot be used until they have been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (the Court), Michael's solicitor deals with this as soon as the attorneys have confirmed their agreement to act and the Lasting Powers of Attorney are fully signed. The registration process takes between 6 to 8 weeks. Once this process is complete the Lasting Powers of Attorney will be ready to use as soon as they are required. Emily is therefore assured that when Michael's dementia progresses she has the legal authority in place to assist him with his finances and ensure his wishes regarding care and medical treatment are carried out.

Armed Forces Day 2022 Cromer After a gap of two years due to COVID-19 restrictions, the biggest and most well-attended Armed Forces Day in North Norfolk is back and once again, we are pleased to be in the Parish Hall, Church Street, Cromer.

This popular event is an opportunity to not just showcase the military of today but also the cadet forces who may make up the future, and to also acknowledge the past.

The Parish Hall will be decorated with flags of the home countries, the Armed Forces and flags of the Commonwealth. All of which, provide not just a colourful backdrop to the event but a reminder of where our forces serve throughout the world.

The event organised by the Cromer Branch of the Royal British Legion will be welcoming back a hugely successful display of military dioramas – many of which have been designed and made especially for the day by Cllrs. Nigel Pearce and David Russell from Roughton. There will also be displays from new exhibitors this year of military models by four new exhibitors which all promise to

showcase the incredible talent of the area.

Cromer Royal British Legion will be back along with a raffle, a DVD stall to raise funds and our Branch Standard will be present and on display. Also present is a stall from the Poppy Appeal with numerous items available to raise funds for the appeal.

Both the Royal British Legion and the Poppy Appeal welcome new members and collectors and if you would like more information, please feel free to ask one of the members present on the day.

If anyone has a collection of military related items they would like to exhibit or you represent a military organisation and would like to book a free table, please contact the organiser on Cromer 01263 5112170

Refreshments will be available, and the event will be open from 10:00 to 15:00 on Saturday 25-June.

Fun and Fundraising at Funeral Comedy Drama

The death of a dad-of-four is the unlikely spark for a “sit-com” stage show heading to Sheringham Little Theatre.

Like any good funeral, the event is raising funds for a good cause – in this case the theatre, which is the base for am dram company Stage Direct staging the comedy One O’Clock from the House. But, unlike most funerals, it also opens the lid on a power battle among the daughters in the dysfunctional family as they wait to see who inherits their father’s money – plus a string of surprises in a pacey plot by Frank Vickery, which was a West End hit in the 1980s.

Director Eladio Ribeiro, a former professional actor, said: “The comedy comes from the colourful characters as they clash, a posthumous joke played on the daughters by their father -

and shocks happen all the way through including at the very end.”

The show is one of series of fundraisers being staged to help its coffers recover from closure during the Covid pandemic.

Eladio added: “We are delighted to stage it as a fundraiser for the Little Theatre which is where our roots are and where we feel part of the family.”

The sisters at the heart of the sit-com action are: Margaret, a penny-pinching snob (played by Imogen Bruce), Maureen, a caring, pregnant, family woman (Kerri Clarke), middle class, house-proud Miriam (Charlotte Pistorius), and impossible-to-live-with Mavis (Kristine Ceirane / Diane Evans) who has spent time in an asylum.

Other key roles in the 13-strong cast, drawn

from all over North Norfolk, are Miriam’s husband Austin (Nigel Manson) and cousin Tudor (Peter Blakeley).

Stage Direct was founded in 1997 and does three shows a year. It’s next one will be The Female of the Species at the Little Theatre on November 11-12.

One O’Clock from the House runs from June 16-18 (7.30pm). Tickets (£12) and more information are available from www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com or the box office on 01263 822347. Cromer Times June 2022

You can now get those spare bikes out, free up space and help others in the process!

The North Norfolk Group of Amnesty International is busy supporting the Welcome Wheels Project – a plan to provide bicycles for refugees and asylum seekers in Norwich and Norfolk. And they would like your help.

“Bicycles are so valuable,” says Amnesty organizer Joolz Saunders, “allowing refugees to give essential access to work, college, school, English classes and to meet others. They provide a small but important degree of personal independence.”

The project is supported by Bicycle Links who will ensure the bikes are in good working order before being handed over to refugees. Road safety training will be given too.

Amnesty International has arranged two locations where donors can bring their bikes – for both adults and children – as well as any unwanted helmets, panniers, lights or hi-vis wear.

“Apart from the practical issues,” says Joolz “the gift of a bike shows that refugees are welcome within the community.”

What is needed: The bikes need to be in reasonable condition, but they will be made fully roadworthy.

The Urban Birder

David Lindo in Conversation with NWT’s Nick Acheson

On Monday 20th June- The Urban birder - David Lindo will visit NWT Cley Marshes to talk about his mission to engage city folk around the world with the environment through the medium of birds.

Norfolk Wildlife Trust Consult on Access for Dogs at Holme Beaches

David is a broadcaster, writer, naturalist, photographer, public speaker and tour leader. Born and raised in London, David says: “I love anything nature, but for as long as I can remember birds have been my particular obsession. It’s amazing what you can see when you look up; birds of prey, swirling swifts, migrating David Lindo thrushes, raucous crows. I spend my time doing as much as I can Photo courtesy of Russell Spencer to promote the appreciation and conservation of the birds that share our city lives. I am thrilled to be visiting Cley Marshes in June to talk about this mission”

Clare Whitelegg Engagement Officer at NWT Cley Marshes says ‘We are very much looking forward to David’s visit. At NWT we are also passionate about engaging people with nature through a whole range of activities including on our urban sites”

During June and July, Norfolk Wildlife Trust will be carrying out a public consultation on proposed changes to access for dogs at Holme beaches.

AND ST STORAGE ORAGE LTD LTD : 01692 016 500 501

The beaches at Holme are internationally important for their breeding and overwintering birds. This includes breeding populations of ringed plover, little tern and oystercatcher, all species of conservation concern in the UK. In the autumn up to 50,000 knot use the area for feeding and resting.

Jonathan Preston, NWT Nature Conservation Manager, said: “Dog walking is a popular activity at Holme, and dog ownership has increased in recent years. We are expecting an increase in dog use of the site in the future and know that we must balance recreational use of Holme beaches and protecting the important wildlife that makes a home here. Without due care and attention, the presence of dogs on the beaches can result in destruction of nests, predation of young birds or eggs and disturbance to breeding and wintering birds.”

Norfolk Wildlife Trust confirms that responsible dog owners will continue to be welcome at Holme beaches and is keen to hear the views of local residents and beach visitors on their proposed plans.

Return of the Credit Crunch Column!

I first started writing this cooking column 13 years ago, when we were all struggling financially, to help people to make the most of their money in the tastiest ways. Sadly, here we are again, with fuel and energy costs spiralling, post pandemic prices still rising even on food, and people once again struggling to make ends meet.

There are things that you can do however to maintain a delicious, nutritious and varied diet, and keep those food costs down. I’ll be sharing as many of those tips and tricks that I have learnt with you in the coming months, and all I would say is, be adventurous and try some of them! Even if it is food that you have never eaten before, give it a go and you may be surprised to find new recipes that become firm favourites.

Today’s recipes are all inspired by bacon offcuts. Bacon packs a huge flavour punch into any recipe, so you actually don’t need a lot of it to get a dish that really delivers.

But if you shop clever, you can get a really good amount for much less than you would

normally pay...by buying the smoked bacon offcuts. Most butchers and supermarkets package these less attractive pieces to sell off; they taste exactly the same and are the ends of the bacon from slicing it into neat rashers. You can generally buy a kilo for under £3, sometimes much less, and you can then freeze it into smaller portions ready for your recipes later on. My very first column was based around these offcuts, and I still use them today. Make sure you can see some orange colour to the offcuts through the packet; this means it includes smoked bacon, which is where the real flavour is.

Easy and Delicious Ways to Use Bacon Offcuts

Chop into small pieces and fry off in a little oil until crispy, to add to salads, sandwiches or as a topper for any dish you fancy. Keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Fry with a chopped onion, some mixed herbs and celery, mix in a tin of chopped tomatoes and a tsp smoked paprika, pop in a handful of defrosted peas, and simmer for 5 minutes. Stir through cooked pasta and top with a little grated cheese

Chop up and fry off in a little butter with a chopped onion, add a sprinkle of oregano and then pour in some beaten eggs and lower the heat to cook through, grating a little cheddar on top. Brown under a grill for a delicious omelette.

Fry or grill some pieces, spread some cream cheese on a wedge of thick bread, top with slices of tomato and a grating of black pepper, and top with your bacon for a quick lunch snack.

Bake a potato, scoop out the inner and mash with cream cheese, fried bacon pieces and onion, and replace into the potato skins. Top with a little cheddar and place back in the oven for 5 minutes.

Make Boston Beans by frying a chopped onion with some small bacon pieces until cooked through, add in a good tsp mild mustard, heaped tsp smoked paprika, 3 tblsp vinegar and a flat tsp sugar and stir. Put in a tin of baked beans and stir through, mixing everything and allow to simmer for 10 minutes. Excellent with baked potatoes or sausage and mash, or just on toast!

Make soup by gently frying a chopped onion, some chopped bacon, 3 sticks celery, 2 carrots finely diced, 1 large potato chopped into chunks and a fat garlic clove finely diced in a little oil. Add in some mixed herbs and 4 tblsp red lentils that have been rinsed under cold water well. Stir and then add a tin of chopped tomatoes and enough hot water to cover the veg, plus a little extra. Pop in a stock cube and bring to the boil, then turn down and simmer with a lid on until the veg are cooked and the lentils are soft. Carolyn Burn

Strawberry Muffins

This recipe makes 12 muffins. Make sure you use the larger 12-hole muffin tin rather than a bun tin and paper muffin cases stop them sticking.

Ingredients

Nothing tastes better than an English strawberry in summer and, at the moment, they at their peak.

These muffins make a pleasant change from scones and can be enjoyed plain with a cuppa or dressed up with a bit of whipped cream if desired.

4 oz butter, room temperature 6 oz caster sugar 2 large eggs 10 oz self-raising flour, sieved ½ teaspoon baking powder pinch salt zest of a lemon ¼ pint whole milk large cup of chopped fresh strawberries Cream the butter, zest and sugar until light

and fluffy, then add the eggs gradually until well combined.

Mix together the flour, salt and baking powder, then add to the mix with the milk (adding some flour mix then some milk alternately). Finally stir in the chopped strawberries. Spoon the mix into the muffin cases, filling to about two-thirds full.

Bake for about 18-20 mins at 200C/180C fan. Lovely eaten just warm, as well as cold and great the next day!

Focus on Old Age Disease:

Is my pet senile? Do animals develop dementia?

As a result of animals living longer, we are seeing an increase in the number of age-related medical and behavioural problems. It is important to realise that old age is not a disease in itself, but is associated with a reduced ability to cope with both physical and environmental stressors. This occurs in both dogs and cats, but more research has been done on our canine companions.

that is characterised by gradual cognitive decline and increasing brain pathology. There are similarities between dogs with CDS and humans with early Alzheimer’s Disease.

Many behaviour changes go unreported by the owner because they think “they are just getting old”.

It is important as an owner to report old age behavioural changes to your vet because medical conditions of virtually any organ system can affect behaviour (the nervous system, urinary tract, vision/hearing, skin, etc). On the other hand, if an owner knows their dog or cat has a medical problem they often attribute old age behaviour changes to that medical condition, but medical conditions and old age behaviour problems can develop at the same time.

The identification and monitoring of diseases such as cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS), sensory loss and pain often relies entirely on behavioural signs.

Cognitive dysfunction syndrome is a neurodegenerative disorder of senior dogs and cats

Cognition is defined as the mental act or process by which knowledge is acquired. In the widest sense, it means knowledge, including sensation and perception.

Some signs of dementia include: ● Vocalisation ● Disruption in the sleep/wake cycle. ● Staring at walls or standing on the wrong side of a door (the non-opening side) they are familiar with to be let through ● Pacing or repetitive behaviours ● House soiling ● Anxiety, fear and phobias ● Aggression and or disorientation

Jaymic Systems Ltd

The first step in dealing with old age behaviour changes is to resolve or control medical problems that could be causing the signs. In the short term it may be necessary to use medical therapy (drugs and pheromone therapy) to help address anxiety and altered sleep/wake cycles while waiting for other medical therapy for concurrent conditions, medical therapy for CDS and behavioural modification to take effect.

Long term therapy consists of continued behavioural modification and enrichment, drug therapy (either to treat the CDS specifically and/or other drugs to treat concurrent diseases such as arthritis), nutritional and dietary therapy (specific prescription diets), and adjunctive therapy where necessary.

Although cognitive dysfunction/senility is an incurable condition, with help and advice from your vet the condition can be managed. This will hopefully help slow the progression of the problem and give your pet a better quality of life in their old age.

Our Veterinary Nurses are able to promote Free of Charge clinics to our clients to discuss ways of helping manage Cognitive dysfunction syndrome so feel free to give us a call on 01692 407126 to book a FOC appointment with a Nurse if you have concerns.

After two years of virtual conferences, the National Committee of the Royal British Legion were pleased once again to invite branches from around the world to the annual conference in the Queen Elizabeth Hall in Westminster. Representing Cromer Branch was Hilary Cox MBE who is the Branch Chairman and the Branch Standard Bearer. The three-day conference included a parade and display of Standard with a march past at the cenotaph.

C

Mrs Cox said: “After being unable to meet fellow Legion members at conference for two years, Westminster, London was not just the best choice, but the obvious choice”. She added: “To carry the Cromer British Legion standard past the Cenotaph has been one of my ambitions since I completed the training several years ago. The Cenotaph is the centre for national Remembrance and holds a special place in the hearts of the entire country”.

Representing the Cromer Branch, the well-known, and respected community champion was also their delegate at the conference where various motions were discussed on membership and moving the Royal British Legion forward.

As part of the march and display of Standards, a drumhead service was held on Horse Guards Parade, located behind Downing Street. A drumhead service is where a temporary altar is made from drums and traditionally held as a time for reflection and remembrance during armed conflict

Branch Secretary, David Pritchard said: “As a branch we are incredibly proud to be sending Hilary to the conference as our representative and to see our standard carried past the Cenotaph and on Horse Guards Parade puts the branch and town at the forefront of the Royal British Legion.”

Cromer Royal British Legion meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 14:00 in Halsey House, Norwich Road, Cromer. New members are always welcome and anyone wishing to join can contact Hilary Cox on Cromer 01263 513820

Making sure your property passes as you choose with a life interest trust by Emma Langley, Solicitor, Hayes + Storr Solicitors

Creating a will with a life interest trust over your property allows you to ensure that your home ultimately passes to those you choose, whilst also allowing you to provide for another loved one during their lifetime.

Life interest trust wills are particularly popular with couples who have children from previous relationships. They can also be useful to couples who have married later in life, and those with dependent siblings or elderly parents.

What exactly is a life interest trust?

A life interest trust is an arrangement whereby your will provides for one beneficiary during their lifetime but, once that person passes away, your assets are transferred over to someone of your choosing, rather than in accordance with your lifetime beneficiary’s wishes.

If you have children from an earlier relationship and a property that you purchased before meeting your current partner, you might be keen to ensure that your children ultimately benefit from your home whilst being happy for your partner to continue living there. You may also have purchased a home jointly with your new Partner, who also has children from a previous relationship, and want to ensure your

respective shares pass to your own children. As the name suggests, a life interest trust typically remains in place for the remaining life of your initial beneficiary. You can, however, create a life interest trust for a set period, such as five years, or until a certain event occurs. If your children and your partner are of a similar age, you might not want your children to have to wait a long time before receiving their inheritance, or risk them predeceasing your partner and missing out altogether. In such a case, a set period could be sufficient to ensure that your partner does not feel rushed out of their home without your children’s inheritance becoming tied up for too long.

to protect vulnerable beneficiaries. You might want to leave your estate to a sibling who is unable to manage their own finances independently, or who is in receipt of means tested benefits. Placing your estate in a life interest trust, with that person as the lifetime beneficiary, allows the trustees to provide for their needs, without that person having to manage the money or risk losing their benefits.

Disadvantages of a life interest trust

Any trust arrangement does, by its nature, require a greater level of administration. Trusts can also attract complex tax rules. Before making a will with a life interest trust, you should always seek professional advice as to the various implications.

Benefits of a life interest trust

Life interest trusts afford you greater control over the distribution of your estate. If you want to ensure that your partner has access to your assets during their lifetime, you could simply leave your estate to them absolutely. However, in doing so, you also give away total control of those assets. When your partner passes away, they could leave their estate, including whatever assets they inherited from you, to someone else entirely.

On 3 May, after an excellent lunch at the Links Hotel in West Runton, we enjoyed a very humorous talk by Simon Partridge, entitled “At Home with the Tudors”. He pointed out that the Tudor period ran from 1485 to 1603, and in that period most people were either very wealthy or very poor. The very wealthy had large houses but small windows as glass was so expensive and when they decided to move house (which was not often) they would take their windows with them! Poor people would eat mainly vegetables, with perhaps an occasional purloined rabbit, whereas the rich had a very meaty diet, in which vegetables hardly figured. Beer was drunk, not water, and from silver or pewter vessels (for the rich) or vessels made from horn (for the poor).

Simon described to us some of the Tudors’ furniture, including beds. Apparently, the saying “Good night, sleep tight” comes from the stretching of ropes beneath the mattresses, to give them secure support. Four-poster beds were surrounded by drapes, for warmth, and had canopies for protection from bat droppings. Some matters of personal hygiene were humorously described but are perhaps best left out of this account! Simon also described how houses tended to be built with oak; Norfolk used to be very wooded, far more than nowadays, since oak from south Norfolk and north Suffolk was used for the navy. We all thanked Simon for his very detailed and interesting talk.

Project launches to support Norfolk's coastal communities care for their environment

Free environmental workshops and project grants available for local communities to enable action.

The Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is a designated landscape of remarkable natural beauty, under intense environmental pressure, including climate change. The Resilient Coast Project is a project of education, empowerment, and action across the AONB, run by the Norfolk Coast Partnership (NCP).

Funded by the Green Recovery Challenge Fund, this project supports communities to take

immediate action to connect, maintain and improve their local environment, and to plan future improvements. This project aims to create engaged communities and a much more integrated area, actively managed for nature and with increased resilience all along the coast.

Project objectives are: ● Empowered and engaged communities ● Support for local nature initiatives ● Improved connectivity within and between communities ● Improved evidence, data collection and recording

The project kicked off with a launch event and day of free, guided, species ID walks at NWT Cley Marshes Visitor Centre on May 28th.

Following this, an extensive series of free environmental workshops will be delivered by Norfolk Wildlife Trust for communities along the coast.

Among other skills, these workshops will teach people how to: ● Create mini meadows and verges as steppingstones for grassland wildlife ● Identify plants, including common families and representative species of flowers ● Make a wildflower meadow, including sourcing the plants ● Produce a nature recovery plan ● Best help wildlife in your outdoor space Workshops are free, booking essential. For more details or to book visit: www.norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk/ riverandcoastworkshops Norfolk Coast Partnership is also offering grants from £250-£2,500 to organisations across the coast who have a nature-based project that will deliver environmental impact for the AONB. Visit norfolkcoastaonb.org.uk/ project/resilient-coast for more information.

Councillor Andrew Jamieson, Chair of Norfolk Coast Partnership, said: “These workshops and the associated small grants will help people living on our beautiful coast create projects which will see nature recovery made a reality. The project is aimed at helping people at a very local level make changes which will have a positive impact for years to come. I would encourage as many people as possible to come to the workshops and consider putting in a relevant application for a project grant.”

www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

34

Gemma Walker, Senior Community Engagement Officer, Norfolk Wildlife Trust, said: “The Norfolk coast is one the most biodiverse areas in the UK. As well as protecting wildlife on nature reserves, it is vital that we work together with our communities to protect and restore the wider natural landscape. We are very pleased to be working with the Norfolk Coast Partnership through this series of wildlife workshops, aimed at helping our coastal communities develop skills and knowledge in how to manage areas for wildlife.”

Hospital Aims to Recruit 250 Volunteers for 250th Anniversary The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is seeking 250 new volunteers in its anniversary year as it celebrates 250 years of providing care and treatment to the local community after seeing its first patients in 1772.

to sources of help.”

“We also support patients at the end of life with the Butterfly Volunteers and relieve stress for staff and patients with the Pets as Therapy Dogs and our volunteer drivers help patients to get home again or transport equipment and belongings.”

Volunteers are being sought right across the hospital with a push on recruiting volunteers in Older People’s Medicine, the Emergency Department and the Settle in Service.

Norfolk’s older population is served by specialist wards in Older People’s Medicine who are seeking volunteers as companions to older patients, particularly those with dementia. These volunteers support patients at mealtimes, helping them to get physically active again, or providing puzzles or games which tackle loneliness and enrich the patient’s hospital stay.

Anyone who is interested in becoming a hospital volunteer can get in touch with the team on volunteers@nnuh.nhs.uk or call 01603 286060.

Another team which is actively seeking volunteers is the Emergency Department where there are roles dedicated to wayfinding, providing refreshments, taking telephone calls and linking-up patients with their relatives.

If volunteers would like to support the hospital in their own communities, we are recruiting volunteers to help settle patients in at home on their day of discharge from hospital.

Sally Dyson, Voluntary Services Manager, says: “We lost many volunteers through the pandemic because they weren’t able to come on site and many found other volunteering roles. Now we’re taking a fresh approach and looking at what support patients need and matching that with the hours that volunteers can provide in a flexible way that fits in with people’s lifestyles.

“The are many ways in which volunteers can support us, either on the hospital site or out in the community where they can support patients as they return home from hospital, settling them in and signposting people

Northrepps Open Gardens 2022 This year sees the return of the ever popular Open Gardens, the fundraiser held in aid of St Mary’s Church in Northrepps. After a four year break due to COVID, visitors once again will have access to view and enjoy some of the best private gardens in Northrepps.

For many years, Open Gardens had been organised by village veteran John Richardson, who sadly passed away in 2021.

Jennie Horton who is co-ordinating Open Gardens on behalf of the Church, says “Without John at the helm, this event may not have happened, so Northrepps Village Trust stepped forward with volunteers. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Ginny and Gremlin, two young cats and Arthur, (a 10-year-old stray who arrived via Cromer vets), have now left for new homes together with 8 kittens (6 of whom were born in care). It had been fairly quiet at the branch since they left although the situation is now changing. Two of the kittens rehomed earlier this year have returned to care as, since they left for their new home, their new owner has been diagnosed with a serious illness and is unable to give them the love and attention they need. Several more cats are also due to arrive shortly to fill the empty pens. The cat pens are never empty for long.

As well as Stephanie receiving calls regarding stray and lost cat(s), I often see posts placed on websites relating to them. With regard to cats that have gone missing it is reassuring to know that many of them are found within a short space of time. If timid, they will often be hiding within sight of their home but are just too scared to come out. In these instances, we will (if one is available) be happy to loan the family a trap to catch the cat. Seeing a new cat in your garden (especially at night on cameras set up to watch the wild animals) does not necessarily mean the cat is a stray. If the cat looks fit and healthy, by all means keep an eye on it to make sure its condition does not deteriorate, as the vast majority of these cats have a home and are well loved. Even some that do not appear to be in the best of health may also have a loving home and could even be receiving veterinary care due to age or illness. If approachable the first option should be to either place paper collars on the cat giving your contact details or take to the vets to check for a chip before doing this. You can also, at this stage, check with the vet to see if any cats have been reported missing that could possibly be your “stray”. It also helps to check with neighbours to find out if they have cats of their own and get a description of their cats. As cats are known to wander this may not always bring results.

food left down for the resident cat. In these instances, it is important for the person to find out who the cat belongs to (again paper collars can be very useful) and make contact with them to explain what is happening and discuss any problems this may result from this. My own neighbour’s cat spends lots of time in our home and my neighbours are happy for him to do this as they know he is safe if they are not at home.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see Arthur if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website,

www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk

where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen. Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home.

It’s hoglet season and these four came in on Thursday 2nd June, so meet Platinum, Majesty, Elizabeth and Jubilee. They were found behind a shed unfortunately there was no sign of a mother coming back after some time, so either she had got disturbed and abandoned them or something had happened to her. They were very cold and had already got fly strike on them. With no time to lose it was removed then they were in an incubator to warm up before having a first of three hourly feeds. With their eyes still closed they would be approximately two weeks old, they seem to be responding well and soon cry to let me know when it’s feeding time!

a whole range of complex learning disabilities is quite remarkable. It has reinforced to me just what a phenomenal job our carers do and that their recognition and pay structure is wholly inadequate. I will be making these representations back in Parliament.

With Easter behind us, I hope you all had a happy and pleasant family time. As many of you know my Easter was somewhat different this year, thanks to my household being the first Member of Parliament family in the country to welcome Ukrainian refugees.

Anna is a 34-year-old mother from Kyiv and her son, Sviatik is 6. Both have been with us since the 3rd April and have become very much part of the family. My children adore Sviatik and he is now happily at school with them. Playing sport and especially learning to play cricket has been a highlight as it's not a main sport in Ukraine! In just a month his English has come on leaps and bounds.

Anna and Sviatik have thoroughly enjoyed North Norfolk life and exploring the area. My family have enjoyed borscht, a Ukrainian traditional dish and our new family have enjoyed the delights of fish and chips and Yorkshire puddings! We have all been bowled over by such incredible kindness and generosity shown by you all. People stopping in the street to hug Anna has been so touching to see. I can’t thank you all enough – it is so appreciated.

I pledged this year to be an MP who rolled up his sleeves and got stuck into understanding the issues that constituents write to me about the most. As such I am spending some of my home time from Parliament volunteering.

I have just spent the most wonderful week at a care home just outside North Walsham, volunteering with “Abbotswood”. This is a care home to a number of vulnerable residents with special needs. The love and care they give to keep many people safe with Down's Syndrome and

My next volunteering role will be a week supporting the ambulance service in the Summer break.

I enjoyed taking part in the Mammoth Marathon. I ran the half marathon as I certainly am not as fit as I was for London in October!

However, I have had so many people ask me if I will run London again. Last year we raised just over £38,000 for 26 local charities. The ability to help so many of our small independent charities throughout our towns and villages has compelled me to do it all again. So, the Mammoth Half is the launch for London 2022 and my quest, once again, to raise £26,000 for 26 local North Norfolk charities. The training starts now!

A guide to minimally invasive facial cosmetic procedures.

Turn back time and see visible results. The time machine procedures.

There has been a tremendous growth in non-surgical procedures which include injectables, lasers and light and energy-based devices. These provide impressive, natural looking results and have a beneficial effect on skin health.

If the effects of ageing, sun-exposure or smoking have taken a toll then your only option may be to go under the knife. This may specially be true if you have tried non-surgical procedures but were not satisfied by the results. Modern advancements in anaesthesia and technology allow us to offer gentle procedures. What is also known as minimally invasive surgical procedure and recovery from these procedures is usually pretty quick within a matter of days. You can think about these as a bit more than non-invasive procedures but not as invasive as a major surgery under general anaesthesia. Here we provide a list of some of these procedures and a brief introduction of what is involved and what they achieve.

Laser facelift is suitable for patients who do not have too much lose skin. This is a procedure to provide a tighter, well-defined jawline and upper neck.

Laser liposuction is the best option to get rid of double chin and excess fat in areas of chin, cheeks, neck and jowls. Again, there is no knife involved and it is a minimally invasive procedure.

Minimally invasive facial cosmetic surgery this may involve small incision mini brow lift, laser blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery. A lip lift which is a small procedure that provides profound results or indeed a mini facelift carried out under local anaesthesia to remove excess facial and neck skin and tighten the underlying muscle layer to provide long lasting results.

Mini-brow lift. This procedure involves 2 incisions on either side of forehead just inside the hair line to lift the outer brows. This is an area

that often sags with ageing and facial volume loss. A full brow lift involves longer incision but mini brow lift avoids a long scar. Often the hair growth will make the scar barely perceptible.

Blepharoplasty. This involves removal of excess upper eyelid skin to allow youthful look to the eyes. We use a precise laser beam to remove the skin minimising bleeding or bruising.

Lip lift. The upper lip lengthens and lips shrink due to loss of volume. If you do lip fillers they often provide an unnatural look. A better solution is to reduce the lip length allowing more of the red lip to show. One stitch facelift. It is a brief procedure performed totally under

a local anaesthetic.

Neck lift. Here a tiny incision is made in the chin crease and underlying neck muscles are tightened. This can also be combined with neck liposuction or mini-facelift surgery.

Fat transfer. Also known as 3D facelift, the process requires gentle fat removal using limited liposuction. The fat cells are then purified and slowly injected. Tiny droplets are placed throughout the tissues assuring that each transferred fat cell will have an adequate blood supply to achieve the permanent survival of the injected fat cells. It provides a natural looking facelift and improves skin quality. Ear lobe surgery. This is carried out to repair torn or stretched earlobes and also to reduce enlarged or elongated earlobes that can be reduced to provide natural contours.

Of course we also offer minor surgical procedures such as removal of moles, cysts, lipomas etc.

North Norfolk Residents Made Aware of Increase in Bicycle Theft As summer approaches, Norfolk Police are seeing an increase in the number of reported incidents of stolen bikes in the North Norfolk area.

Over the last month (April – May 2022) police have received a number of reports of stolen bikes from across North Norfolk, including from Cromer, Walsingham, Sheringham, Wells, Little Snoring, and Northrepps.

While officers continue to investigate these reports, bicycle owners are offered the following crime prevention advice:

● Invest in a good quality lock for your bicycle, to no less than CEN security grade 3-4. D-locks are the most effective and a worthwhile investment

● Use a lock to secure the bike-stand, wheel rim and frame together, making it more difficult for a thief to steal

● Never leave your bike unlocked in a public place

● Take photos of your bike so that you have evidence of ownership and records of its appearance

● Consider registering your bike using a third-party service to further protect it such as Bike Register or Immobilise

● Find a suitable location to leave and secure your bike - dark alleys, drain-pipes and posts should be avoided

● Bikes kept in garages and sheds should also be properly secured. Alternatively, if there is room, inside the home is the most secure location to store your bike.

● Get your bike security marked by your local police Safer Neighbourhood Team, making it readily identifiable, should it be recovered

Marathon for Macmillan

The team at Henleys Estate Agents are very proud to have completed a full walking marathon of 26.2 miles on May 14th from Cromer to Holkham in aid of Macmillan Cancer Nurses. The team of Pamela Jonas, Charlotte Copeman and directors Jeff & Annie Cox completed the marathon in very hot conditions. Annie comments “It was tough going especially along the 4 miles of shingle bank at Salthouse and the last 4 miles to the finish at Holkham Hall felt like 40 miles! The heat also took its toll, but we all found inner strength and willpower to complete the walk in a good time.” Jeff adds “We had trained very hard for the occasion, but we hit various “walls” along our journey, and we all suffered from the heat, injuries and fatigue. I am so proud of my team, and we’ve raised thousands of pounds for our favourite charity. We want to thank everyone who supported and sponsored us for such a fantastic cause.”

Dear Jo,

On Saturday 14th May a very large gathering of ladies and gentlemen got together for the “mighty hike” to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. One of these was my sister Jeanne Smith who is a survivor of breast cancer. She is in her 75th year and decided she was going to do the full 26 miles! A great challenge for her & many others. I am proud to say she completed it on a very hot day and a heavy backpack & sore hip!!! Cromer to Holkham what an achievement, she has raised over £2,200 on her own from very generous donations. Please give her a very big mention in all your free papers this is such a worthy cause and what a star! Thankyou, Sally Davis (her sister).

Two Aylsham Chess Club (ACC) teams have won their respective Norfolk County Chess Association (NCCA) North Norfolk Seals versus Aylsham leagues. During the 2021-22 Spitfires season, Aylsham Spitfires Left to right: North Norfolk Seals (NCCA Div 2 West) competed (David Jones, Edward Hackford, Robin against teams representing Blackwell & Alan Page) and Aylsham Broadland, Fakenham, King’s Spitfires (Dan Hedges, David Owen, Lynn and North Norfolk. Matt Rausch & John Wickham) Aylsham Hurricanes (Div 3) competed against teams representing Broadland, North Norfolk, Norwich (St John’s Bishops & Knights) and Wymondham. John Wickham (NCCA & ACC Chair) commented: “After two years of COVID it was great to complete a full chess season. Aylsham Chess Club, only founded in 2018, did well in winning two of the NCCA leagues. Hopefully, Aylsham will be able to build on this success and, possibly, have enough players for a third team in the 2022-23 season.” To find out more about Aylsham Chess Club contact Jonathan Reeve: Tel: 01263-733744 or e-mail: aylshamchessclub@gmail.com

News from the Club house

News from the Club house We were very pleased to welcome the Mayor of Cromer, Pat West, to our opening day ‘spoon drive’. Before enjoying some time bowling on the green he officially unveiled the defibrillator on site. We are indebted to a club member for the financial assistance in acquiring the defibrillator and hope that it will support the people of Cromer and visitors if the need arises.

Buxton BC visited for a 4 rink triples friendly game. In lovely weather both teams enjoyed the afternoon with Cromer winning on 3 rinks to 1 for a final shot score of 72-59. George B, Brenda S and David H won 21-12. James P, Steve H and Neil P won 18-14 and David M, Andrew H and David Be won 15-11. The Men began their league season in the NBA with a visit to Fakenham. 2 rinks were very hard fought with one win each.
