Cromer Royal British Legion Celebrates 100 Years

The Cromer Branch of the Royal British Legion in North Norfolk has commemorated the centenary of the Royal British Legion.

The Chairman - Hilary Cox MBE, David Phillip-Pritchard the Secretary, Deputy Mayor and Treasurer - Dr. Mike Bossingham and our Town Mayor Cllr. Richard Leeds gathered at the War Memorial (which is also celebrating its centenary in July). A wreath was laid on behalf of the branch along with a further wreath on behalf of the Cromer Women’s Section. The group then moved to the Royal British Legion Care Home at Halsey House where a further wreath was laid in their Memorial Garden.

Branch Chairman, Hilary Cox spoke at the events giving a brief history of the Royal British Legion both nationally and locally. She said that the “British Legion was formed on 15-July 1921 as an amalgamation of four WW1 charities: • The National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers • The British National Federation of Discharged and Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers • The Comrades of The Great War • The Officers' Association Continued on page 4...

were Field Marshal Earl Haig and Tom Lister of The Federation of Discharged and Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers. It was Lord Haig who served as the President of The Royal British Legion until his death in 1928. During the 50th anniversary in 1971, the British Legion was formerly given permission to become the Royal British Legion. For 100 years the Royal British Legion has been a symbol of hope for the Armed Forces community”. Immediately following the wreath laying, Mrs Cox and Mr Pritchard had to return to their respective homes as they were representing their branch at the annual Royal British Legion conference. This year to commemorate their centenary, delegates were joined online by HRH the Prince Charles

Branch Secretary and Poppy Appeal Organiser, Mr Pritchard said: “For any organisation to celebrate their centenary at such a difficult time is itself an achievement to be applauded. The Royal British Legion is as relevant today as it was 100 years ago and as always, we welcome new and returning members to join us”.

Hilary, our Chairman and I have had a very long conversation and have taken into account the very slight increase in cases of COVI19, the emergence of the “Indian Variant”, and as I write, the possibility of the relaxation of “rules” due on 21-June being delayed.

Therefore, to protect each other, our families and the residents and staff of Halsey House, we have decided to put back the date of our first meeting to Monday 05-July-21, at 14:00. As previously advised, on the day, please wait at reception and you will be escorted through the building to where we can meet.

This meeting is essential to getting us up and running again so please make every possible attempt to attend. It would be good to see so many of you again and after so long.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but we genuinely believe that this is the best possible outcome.

A Note from the editor

New name, same Foodbank

Cromer and District Foodbank was set up in 2012 to meet the needs of people in crisis around the Cromer area. Since that time the area covered and the network of distribution centres has increased and now we cover approximately 200 square miles of North Norfolk through our distribution centres at Cromer, Sheringham, North Walsham, Holt, Aylsham and Stalham, plus an outlet at Wells.

At last, the sun is shining, and we are going to get a summer. Judging by the numbers of visitors about we are set for a busy one at that. It is good to see everything opening up and businesses doing a brisk trade. The general mood is optimistic with the vaccine programme progressing, but we still need to be careful and keep to the rules a little longer. Local infection rates are very low but likely to rise, at least a little, as we welcome visitors from other regions on holiday. With Summer comes the increased use of our beaches and enjoying the sea. This is predicted to be a very busy year for the RNLI, so keep to the advice on keeping safe in the water and if you see anyone in difficulties alert the lifeguards or call the coastguard by dialing 999. Whatever you are up to in the sunshine, enjoy your June magazine.

We have been considering changing our name to reflect the increased scope of our operation and now it has been decided to action this. So, we are delighted to announce that from the end of June we will be known as North Norfolk Foodbank. There will be nothing different in the way we operate, we will continue to meet the needs of people in crisis across the district, but we hope the new name gives a better representation of who we are and enables us to reach more people in need.

During the last financial year, we saw the number of food vouchers fulfilled up by 27% to 2081, the number of people fed up by 42% and the number of children fed up by 68%. We coped with this extra demand through the generosity of our food donors as our donations were up 50% to 66,659kg. Not only that, but we received a significant increase in financial donations, which enabled us to provide extra items of need and top up stock levels where they were running low. We also have continued our Energybank scheme to support those needing help to pay their energy bills, through the generous support of donors and grant funding.

You may have seen this eye-catching poster in the town promoting the latest book from the Friends of North Lodge Park about the history of Cromer’s North Lodge Park – the story of "the park before it became the park”.

This second volume of park history traces the history of Cromer’s links with the Goldsmiths over nearly 500 years, focusing on the building of the Overstrand Road Free &URPHU )UHH 6FKRRO WKH *ROGVPLWKV¶ &RPSDQ\ School 200 years ago, and the &URPHU FRQQHFWLRQ many attempts to develop the 7 + ( 3$ 5 . % ( ) 2 5 ( , 7 % ( & $ 0 ( 7 + ( 3$ 5 . School Field land which became the park in 1929 – for example, the 1839 North Lodge building, now the Town Council offices, was built as a ‘show house’ to encourage building of similar mansions.

And if this stunning 1825 grand design had been built there would never have been a park. The two 400 ft long terraces would have filled the land from the Overstrand Road to the cliff top, as shown superimposed on an 1822 map of the School Field, and the grounds would have been strictly private. The land was owned by London's Goldsmiths Company, who established the Cromer Free School in 1505 through the Will of Cromer-

New badge launched at NNUH to celebrate International Nurses Day A new badge to celebrate the achievements of newly qualified nurses and midwives has been launched on International Nurses Day at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

The first pin badges and certificates were presented to ten staff today (12 May) following their successful completion of their first-year preceptorship.

The new badge, which features Norfolk’s Edith Cavell and the Florence Nightingale lamp, was designed by Cromer and District Hospital nurse Billy Lawson following a competition last year.

It will be given to all newly qualified nurses, midwives and AHPs who complete their first year with the Trust.

The project was supported by the N&N Hospitals charity and the pin badge will also go on sale to help raise funds for the hospital charity.

Dave Guttridge, NNUH Clinical Educator, said: “We wanted to do something to celebrate nurses and midwives’ achievements in their first year, which can be a difficult transition. It was the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale last year and Billy’s winning badge design celebrates Norfolk and nursing with images of Norwich Cathedral, wheat to represent the farming community, Edith Cavell and the Nightingale lamp.”

The badge has an authentic Turkish style fanoos lamp that was carried by Florence Nightingale and is also set to go on display at the Florence Nightingale Museum in London.

RAF Air Defence Radar Museum Open

One of Norfolk’s best-loved museums is now open to the public from 18th May for the first time since October 2019. The RAF Air Defence Radar Museum at Neatishead has been closed since the end of the 2019 season due to the Covid pandemic. Museum Manager Lynn Kerslake said “We could not wait to welcome our visitors again after such a long time. North Norfolk Photographic Society

North Norfolk Photographic Society held a third club competition which again – due to the impossibility of holding live meetings, was via Zoom.

That technology actually suits a camera club very well; judges and members do not have to travel great distances, and everybody gets a good look at the pictures – not always easy from the back of a hall!

The judge on this occasion was David Steel, who did not have to travel to Holt from Cambridge where he is based. He had 72 photographs entered into the contest by members and gave a fair and honest comment on every one of them.

Survey launched to seek views on community safety in Norfolk

Residents across Norfolk are being urged to have their say about community safety in the county.

The Norfolk County Community Safety Partnership (NCCSP) has today (Monday 24 May) launched an eight-week consultation to understand what residents believe will make Norfolk a safer place to live, work and visit.

The NCCSP develops a Community Safety Plan which sets out the priorities which partners will focus on. Having carried out an assessment of crime and community safety issues, the NCCSP has drafted a new threeyear plan which proposes seven priorities.

The partnership now wants to hear from Norfolk residents whether they feel the priorities correctly reflect the issues which matter most to them.

The proposed priorities are: • Serious violence • Domestic and sexual abuse • Preventing terrorism • Criminal exploitation, including modern slavery and county lines drug dealing • Neighbourhood crimes like robbery, burglary, anti-social behaviour, vehicle crime and other theft offences • Hate crime and community tensions • Fraud

The NCCSP brings together organisations from across Norfolk to tackle crime and disorder, and ensure the county remains a safe place for all.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

We normally meet for a superb lunch (after a chat at the bar) at the Links Country Club Hotel in West Runton on the first Tuesday of each month (except January, when it is the second Tuesday), followed by a stimulating talk, and twice a year (in May and December) members may bring their partners.

The club is for men who are retired, or nearly retired, and its purpose is entirely social, providing an environment for making and meeting friends and hearing informative and entertaining talks. We also occasionally arrange outings to places of interest.

Our club, formed in 1975, now comprises around 40 members, who come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including finance, engineering, the armed services, the law, the church and education.

Past talks have included: “Titanic – Imposters and Assumed Names”, “Drones – The Future or a Menace?”, “Beneath the Streets of London” and “Fighting in the Falklands War”. Despite the absence of physical meetings during the past year owing to the COVID-19

pandemic, we have still been active as a club in a variety of ways:

• Those on the Committee have been maintaining regular telephone contact with members, helping to keep their spirits up. Those living alone have been especially appreciative of this initiative • An Almoner, Richard Lee, has been appointed – he is available to any member in need of someone to talk to and will keep in touch with those unable to attend regularly • A newsletter has been published monthly since June 2020. It doesn’t contain much current news, but there is more than enough of that available elsewhere. Items are contributed by members. We have had interesting articles about members’ lives, home-grown poetry and prose, plus light-hearted quizzes and quotes. The newsletter has proved very popular, and an edited version will soon appear on the club’s website • Some members have been attending monthly virtual coffee mornings via Zoom. They start with a short talk (usually delivered by one of our members), after which there is time for

questions and a general chat. The coffee mornings last around 40 minutes and attendees can stay as long or as little as suits them.

Protecting your dog against Ticks this year

East Anglia is a beautiful area, however, it is also an area classified as “high risk” for ticks. Ticks are most active between mid-March and October, however, with changes in the climate they are becoming active for longer. The most frequently seen tick is the sheep tick although the hedgehog and fox ticks may also make an appearance. All of these species of tick will feed on dogs, cats and humans.

Ticks are unable to jump or fly and travel by climbing on vegetation such as long grass and then waiting for a suitable host to pass by. They attach to this host using their hooked front legs. Following attachment, ticks will spend time choosing a suitable feeding site before attaching to feed via their mouth parts. As ticks take time to attach the act of brushing pets following a walk can reduce the number of ticks actually attaching. Tick bites are usually painless and attaching ticks are often as small as 1.5mm and will increase to the size of a pea after feeding. Not all ticks carry disease, but for infected ticks the action of attaching allows them to transmit diseases such as lymes disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis and rickettsiosis to the host. The risk of infection transmission increases the longer the tick is attached to the host.

How can we protect our pets?

In order to reduce the spread of tick borne disease we recommend regular tick prevention treatments. These come in the form of tablets, collars and spot-on preparations and will usually kill ticks within 12-24 hours of attachment and last for between 4 and 12 weeks depending on the product chosen.

Many of the most effective treatments can only be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon and so we would advise contacting your vet to discuss the most suitable treatment for your pet.

Strawberry Eton mess cake At The Grove, we are now fully open and firing on all cylinders.

We are welcoming guests to our new terrace for afternoon teas and both our a la carte restaurant and Sundown are going down a treat. So a big thank you to all our guests and diners, new and old for your continued support. Taking bookings on 01263 512412

together until all combined, then repeat with remaining flour (take time to not knock too much air out of the mix as this will help the cake rise in the oven). The mixture should be smooth and just drop off of a spatula or spoon, (if mix is too wet, add small amount of flour until correct consistency).

Line a 10” cake tin with butter and baking paper, spoon the mixture into the tin, gently smooth the top and bake in a 160c for 40 minutes or until middle is cooked when tested with a skewer or thin knife.

Once cooked through, let cool completely in the tin, gently remove from tin and slice evenly in half length ways and put to side.

Enjoy the Eton Mess, but don’t count the calories!

Ingredients Sponge 300g self raising flour 300g sugar 300g butter 5 eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Eton mess filling, whip the cream till it reached soft peaks, fold in the diced strawberries and meringue. Use this mixture to fill the cake to desired amount and top with other half of cake.

For icing, mix the icing sugar with enough milk to make a spreadable icing, mix with food colouring till desired colour is achieved.

Assemble cake with filling and cover with icing, decorate top with any spare berry mixture and remaining berries, slice and enjoy.

Police Launch Summer Initiative to Protect Norfolk's Wildlife Habitats

Visitors to Norfolk's coast this summer are being encouraged to act responsibly around wildlife.

Norfolk Constabulary has signed up to the national initiative Operation Seabird to raise awareness of the importance of protecting and preserving our rich wildlife habitats and tackling disturbance to seals, sea birds and nesting birds.

"For many tourists it can be surprising and exciting to see marine mammals, including seals & their pups which will normally rest on the beach at various times of year, as well as ground nesting birds which are usually resident between March to September. As tempting as it is to approach them, we would respectfully ask that all people are careful to:

Book Provides History Lesson About Unique School

The turrets and towers of a north Norfolk village school make it a stunning landmark – and a new book charting its 200-year history shows just how special it is.

Antingham and Southrepps Primary was opened in 1826 by the local lord of the manor to educate the children of farmworkers on his estate, long before schools were a part of everyday community life.

It is the fifth oldest school in Norfolk still operating in its original building, and at one time had more than 300 pupils from the surrounding villages.

The early days were challenging, with poor families often needing the children to work rather than study. Absenteeism was dealt with by carrot and sticks. There was a medal for good attendance – and even a pocket watch for seven years unbroken schooling. But there were also Draconian measures, including fines and hard labour, for parents of children who were absent too often.

The snapshots of early life at the school are captured in A School Through Time, written by Margaret Dowland who lives a stone’s

throw from the school in Lower Street. The retired nurse became fascinated by the school’s history when serving as a governor from 2007-12. Margaret said the inspiration for the book began with the imposing church-like building. However, the real story she wanted to highlight was “not just flint and stone” but the social history behind it.

“The more I looked, the more interesting it became, and the more I realised that this school is of historical significance and that its story should be recorded,” she explained. Research has taken 15 years on and off, with help from others including friend Sarah Westlake. The book charts the evolution of the school from those philanthropic beginnings when founder Lord Suffield paid for the building and the headmaster’s salary, and fees were linked to estate farm worker’s wage. It ends in 2014 when it became part of the North Norfolk Academy Trust.

“Log books and minutes recorded a newly married teacher whose husband was killed in the Great War – which was heart-breaking. But there are also funny entries, such as a 1946 delivery by the Ministry of Supply of light bulbs and shades to the school – which didn’t have electricity until 1951!”

A list of children, their parents and occupations is also a snapshot of village history from 1875 to 1911. The book reflects the national changes in education as well as providing an insight into the people involved in the village institution, including a list of senior staff and anecdotes from pupils.

The poignant pages reflect the tough lives of the earliest pupils and parents, and there are extracts from the punishment book for misdemeanours ranging from laziness and talking in class to setting fire to bushes on the common.

Some children’s absence excuses in poverty ridden rural families included lack of boots – needed for walking miles to school in all weathers.

Margaret added: “I hope it tells people where the school came from, so they value it.”

A wartime chapter tells how pupils were taught in a barn for six weeks while soldiers were billeted there in the First World War, while in the Second, the school was swamped with evacuees from Dagenham which doubled the school role temporarily.

Cuppas, snacks, shows and movies were on the menu as Sheringham Little Theatre reopened its doors for the latest lockdown

The Hub café bar welcomed regulars and new faces as the community arts venue emerged from months without income from either its auditorium or popular watering hole.

Director Debbie Thomson said: “We are delighted open again – and doing what we are supposed to do, providing entertainment and a warm welcome for everyone.”

Shows begin on May 19 with a sold-out People’s Cabaret event in partnership with the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, followed by the classic comedy of Joyce Grenfell on May 22-23, and a trio of movies in tribute to Little Theatre film fan Julian High (Out of Africa on May 25, West Side Story on May 27 and Carousel on May 30).

Seating capacity in the auditorium is limited to 30pc of the usual 160, and the Hub café car is at half capacity with 30 seats, but Mrs Thompson said it was great to be back in action – with visitor safety at the forefront - and with ongoing work to improve the building exterior and extra ventilation under way.

Café regulars Clive and Caryl Taylor from Tuttington said they were glad to be revisiting one of their favourite haunts, where they enjoy the friendly atmosphere and the range of productions including summer drama. This is the time of year to really start thinking about growing some new fresh herbs for the kitchen, outdoor cooking or for drinks. There are many benefits to growing herbs in containers, especially now new potatoes are on the market, and it will not be long before we are digging them, I do like mint in mine!

I have chosen my top seven herbs that can be grown in containers they are: - Basil, Greek Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme, Mint, Parsley and Lemon balm. However, you do not need to stick to this list, just add your favourites.

Depending on the setting the container can be a large pot, wooden box, terracotta herb planter, tin, fabric container or anything else that will hold soil and plants providing it has drainage, this is most important. It also needs to be clean so a good wash will get rid of any unwanted diseases. The soil needs to be a combination of loam and multipurpose compost, something that will not dry out too quickly and has some body for the plants

to feed on. When it comes to feeding the herbs, this should be done occasionally with a seaweed feed or liquid feed such as tomato feed watered in.

The majority of the herbs that have been chosen love the sun, so a warm sunny position will pro-vide the best location for your container. Some of the herbs will need more water than others so bear in mind the Mediterranean climate, so don’t over water. To prevent the herbs going to seed or growing too big then harvest regularly. You can always have a bunch of herbs drying in the kitchen, as well as fresh outside.

So, lets talk about the herbs, I have selected: Basil is very easy to grow from seed or buy locally, it will thrive in a warm atmosphere loves a well-drained soil in a sunny position. It is very sweet smelling; it also needs cutting regularly and if you see the flowers start to appear then cut them off.

Greek Oregano is a very vigorous grower and putting it in a container it will thrive. It has silvery small leaves, these are packed with flavour, perfect for topping homemade pizza and bruschetta, as well as adding to vinaigrettes and marinades.

Rosemary can come as an upright plant or prostrate (laying down) which would be perfect for flowing over the edges of the container. It is a woody plant and once you have one you can easily propagate more plants from the side shoots. This plant does not like being over watered. So be sparing with the water and it will flourish. like leaves are perfect for roast potatoes, lamb etc and provide a beautiful aromatic flavour.

Thyme is one of the best herbs for container gardening; it’s low maintenance, droughttolerant, and can take a bit of neglect. It looks fantastic when planted at the front of a container where the tiny leaves can mound over the edge of the pot. Give it full sun and don’t overwater; it’s drought-resistant and prefers its soil on the dry side. There are many different thymes each with their own distinct colouring and smell.

Mint is a very aggressive plant and will take over if allowed. I would plant it in a 4 inch pot and sink this in the container with the other herbs, this will stop it overwhelming the other plants. Mint likes a rich soil and keep it moist. You can use it for cooking, drinks and in fruit dishes. There are many different flavours when it comes to mint from chocolate to orange and so on.

parsley comes as either flat leafed or curly and loves the sun and a moist growing condition. It can take some shade as well. Keep cutting it and it will thrive through the season. It will benefit from a feed as well.

Lemon Balm also shares the aggressive growth habit of mint, which can quickly take over small garden spaces, because of this, I plant lemon balm in containers. It’s a hardy perennial even over-wintering in pots. Give it the same soil mixture (potting soil-compost) as mint, and water often. It needs ample moisture for the best flavour and what flavour! The glossy green leaves both smell and taste like lemons. It’s great in fruit salads, tea, lemonade, and marinades.

Cantamus

A New Dawn –

North Norfolk choir Cantamus has announced that it will shortly restart rehearsals, which were suspended during the COVID-19 lockdown.

a Live Performance!

The choir will start rehearsing in June, subject to confirmation of stage 4 of the Government’s roadmap. The choir will meet at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Sheringham on Thursday evenings under the direction of Philip Adams and plans to rehearse a wide-ranging programme of music by Thomas Tallis, Bela Bartok and Gustav Holst.

After a long-enforced break Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to announce that (COVID rules permitting) we will be joining forces with Broadland Youth Choir to perform John Rutter’s beautiful Mass of the Children.

Nigel Roberts, chair of Cantamus, said: “so many of us have missed singing during the pandemic, and we are looking forward to being able to meet again. We hope the roadmap will progress smoothly and we can start in June. We are open to everyone of any musical ability, and we would love to see some new faces joining us – just contact our Secretary at elainetwigg@aol.com for details”.

The concert will take place on Saturday 10 July at 7 pm in Cromer Parish Church. The performance will be conducted by the Society’s musical director, David Ballard with soloists Zaira Palumbo, soprano and Andrew Weeks, baritone.

Mass of the Children was written at the invitation of Peter Tiboris and MidAmerica Productions and first performed on 13 February 2003 in Carnegie Hall, New York, conducted by the composer. As well as including traditional Latin texts the Mass also includes verse by Thomas Ken (1637- 1711), William Blake (1757 - 1827) and others. Zaira Palumbo sings with the Choral Society

Angela & Natasha’s bike ride in aid of Sing Your Heart Out (SYHO)

Two keen cyclists are setting out from Sheringham on Thursday 10th June to cover nearly 200 miles by bike in aid of charity. They are raising funds for Sing Your Heart Out (SYHO) by visiting each of the 5 venues around the county where the local SYHO groups hold their award winning singing workshops which promote mental wellbeing by singing together.

Angela Mason & Natasha Hood, who love to sing and are both involved personally in SYHO, enjoy cycling but admit the distance will be a challenge.

Angela said “I had the idea a few months ago & whilst telling Natasha about my plans she said she would like to join me. It will be great to have company and we’re hoping that singers from each group will come and cheer us at their venue”

After leaving Sheringham they will pedal to Norwich. The next day Great Yarmouth is their destination, followed by Attleborough then on Sunday 13th finishing in Kings Lynn. After Kings Lynn they will complete the ride by cycling 45 miles to their respective homes.

The pandemic has meant SYHO groups have not been able to sing together in person but a great way of solving this dilemma has been to sing together live on line.

SYHO’s trained voice coaches have put together fortnightly online sessions where the fun of singing live together has been well replicated.

COVID-19 Litigation Risks

As the UK is now gradually easing out of lockdown and (hopefully) with the end of the Covid-19 pandemic in sight, it is inevitable that the Government will now turn its focus towards clawing back the funds expended in the course of its various Support Schemes.

As part of this year's budget in March 2021, the Government announced that it will be deploying £100m in the creation of a new Taxpayer Protection Taskforce to investigate individuals and businesses who wrongfully claimed under the Government Support Schemes.

The taskforce will consist of approximately 1250 HMRC officials who will target those who have fraudulently claimed under the following schemes:

• Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (otherwise known as the Furlough Scheme); • Self Employed Income Support Scheme; • Bounce Back Loan Scheme; • Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme; • Coronavirus Large Business

Interruption Loan Scheme; and • Eat Out to Help Out Scheme.

As of March 2021, the taskforce had already made 10,000 enquiries into wrongful claims. The taskforce are choosing which claims to investigate based on payment data, PAYE records and tip-offs from members of the public. It is anticipated that there will be more enquiries made by the taskforce.

If an individual or business has been found to have wrongfully claimed taxpayer funds during the pandemic, they may be liable to civil and/or criminal penalties. HMRC's investigations are not solely limited to fraudulent claims, they are also investigating individuals and businesses who have mistakenly claimed funds when they were not entitled to do so under the scheme's criteria. In some instances, individuals may not even be aware of assistance their employers claimed, either inadvertently or fraudulently.

It is therefore essential that all individuals and businesses that claimed taxpayer funds during the pandemic review their paperwork and records to ensure that they did so correctly and in accordance with the criteria in force at that time. If it transpires that a mistake was made, then it is essential to seek

independent legal advice at the earliest opportunity.

Summer Soup

Soup may not be an obvious choice for the summer, but at our house we eat it all year round, simply because it is so easy to prep in advance, contains loads of goodness, and is super quick to grab and go.

In the summer months, having a lovely soup recipe that celebrates the best of the season makes the most of what is available in the shops, and makes for a light and delicious supper when combined with good bread and maybe a hunk of cheese, but can be surprisingly filling for those with a hearty appetite. This recipe uses soya cream, which comes in a long-life carton and will keep happily in your cupboard for ages, is not expensive and has a variety of uses. It also is virtually indistinguishable from dairy single cream in a recipe such as this, and suitable for vegans. If you don’t have any on the shelf, single cream works great. Jersey Royal potatoes, long stemmed broccoli and asparagus are simply delicious, but not the cheapest for a family, so this recipe allows everyone to enjoy them without breaking the bank!

Small handful wholewheat spaghetti, broken into small pieces ¾ Small carton soya cream Dried mint (or a handful of fresh finely chopped if you have some in the garden) Seasoning Tsp white miso paste, mixed with a little hot water

Make sure you use the tips AND stalks of the asparagus in the soup, just discarding the tough ends by breaking them off; the same goes for the long-stemmed broccoli. This soup recipe is probably the best that I make, and certainly the most popular, eaten even by those who normally shun vegetables.

Pop all the veg except the asparagus and haricot beans and peas into a large saucepan with a good glug of olive oil, and gently sweat for 5 mins with the lid on over a medium heat.

Minty Summer Veg Soup

1 onion, finely chopped 1 large leek, finely chopped Small bag Jersey Royal potatoes (or a good handful) 3 carrots, finely diced 3 sticks celery, chopped into small chunks Bunch long stemmed broccoli, chopped Handful summer beans, chopped Mug of frozen peas, defrosted Bunch asparagus, chopped into small pieces Tin haricot beans

Add boiling water and bring up to the boil, then simmer gently for about 15 mins until the veg is softening, and then add in the mint, asparagus, haricot, spaghetti and peas.

Simmer for 8 mins and add the miso and cream, stir and simmer very gently (do not allow to boil) for a further 3 mins and serve.

Keeps well in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Wherry Maud Trust Launches Crowdfunding Campaign #money4maud

Norfolk Trading Wherry Maud, a vessel on the National Historic Fleet, is to benefit from a fundraising campaign to raise vital funds for a new support boat. It will enable Wherry Maud Trust to increase the number of Maud’s sailings and continue in their work to keep Broads history alive in these financially difficult times. With volunteers from across Norfolk clubbing together to help support the well-loved wherry, the campaign has already got off to a flying start, attracting £1150 in donations towards its £10,500 goal.

“We are all excited about this campaign. We are keen to show off our lovely historic wherry to more people,” says Linda Pargeter, Treasurer of Wherry Maud Trust. “With a new support boat, we will sail “Maud” more often and more people will have the opportunity to experience first-hand this wonderful part of Norfolk Broads living heritage.”

With her distinctive black sail, Wherry Maud is one of Norfolk’s best loved sights on the Norfolk Broads. The only remaining trading wherry of typical construction, she’s maintained by Wherry Maud Trust’s team of dedicated volunteers, who run trips throughout the year, keeping alive a significant part of the history and culture of the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads. With membership currently only £15 per year, all local members can experience the wonder of sailing on Maud

and appreciate her living heritage, while other members can keep up to date via the Trust’s bi-annual newsletters.

Having an easy to maintain support boat with a more powerful engine will ensure that the Trust can run more trips and be less restricted by winds and tides. The extra trips will generate donations to make up income that was lost due to the 2020 pandemic.

The cost of the project is £10,500 and the Trust will make every pound count to keep Maud sailing for future generations.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

As we have mentioned before, our branch is run entirely by volunteers. Sometimes, when people ring, they do not realise that they are probably speaking to Stephanie in her kitchen and that we do not have people sitting in an office waiting to respond to telephone calls. If she is busy elsewhere the person can leave a message on the answer phone. Bearing this in mind it may be some time before she can respond, so please be patient if you are expecting a call back. It also pays to check she has not called as often people will call again not having noticed that she has already responded to their original message. Calls received late at night and early in the morning will go straight to answer phone and not be answered, (for example the recent calls received at 5.15am and 9.45pm).

When Stephanie receives calls for cats and kittens to come into care, especially if the situation appears to be urgent, she will do her best to try and arrange for the cats/kittens to come in. This may involve contacting more than one of our fosterers to see if we can accommodate the cats. This has to be done within Cats’ Protection guidelines and may mean asking Lesley if she can spare another pen to either take a cat already in care or the cat/kittens which need urgent help. Occasionally, having made various calls, when she contacts the person making the request, she finds they no longer need our help. Two recent instances, when she spent a considerable amount of time try to fit cats in, spring to mind. The first was a request to take a kitten from an industrial site. After making several calls to arrange for the kitten to come in, when ringing to advise we could take it in, she was informed that the person had found it a home. The second instance concerned a gentleman whose cat had kittens and, as they had several cats, they could not cope with anymore. Again, several calls were made, and Lesley had agreed to take the kittens. On calling to give the good news she was advised that the gentleman would have to discuss it with his wife and would call back the next day. Needless to say, we did not hear from him again and many

calls and much time was therefore wasted. If you do contact us to take cats or kittens into care and the situation changes, please let us know as soon as possible to avoid wasting Stephanie’s precious time.

The coronavirus pandemic has seen many marriage and civil partnership ceremonies postponed. A survey by the wedding planning website Hitched found that 71 per cent of couples had postponed their weddings rather than proceed with just a handful of guests.

Despite the range of options available nowadays, many couples prefer not to formalise their relationships. Therefore, if you are unmarried, it is important to plan for circumstances which may occur later in life.

Couples who are cohabiting (or those in committed relationships but not living together) may find themselves in a situation where medical and financial decisions are made on their partner’s behalf without their involvement.

A lasting power of attorney (LPA) sets out who you want to make financial or healthcare decisions for you, should you lose mental capacity. Loss of mental capacity can be due to illness, accident, or a serious injury. Sadly, it can impact families at all stages in life and is not just an issue that effects the elderly.

Later life, financial management and mental capacity

Regardless of marital status, no one can access your sole financial accounts unless you have granted authority to them under a financial lasting power of attorney.

Despite making a power of attorney being advisable, many people do not put one in place and relatives find themselves caring for a loved one who has lost mental capacity without having any authority to deal with that person’s finances.

Next of kin and health decisions Married couples and civil partners are afforded recognition as next of kin for medical purposes. Even so, this does not give absolute authority and a separate health and welfare lasting power of attorney enables you to make your express wishes clear. If you are paying for someone’s additional care, bills, groceries, or maintaining the upkeep of their property, in the absence of a power of attorney, an application to the Court of Protection is often the only way to obtain authority to access their funds. It is expensive and time consuming, a lasting power of attorney being quicker and cheaper.

Unmarried couples are not automatically considered next of kin and can find themselves in a situation where medical decisions are made on their partner’s behalf without their consent. It is even more important therefore to have a health lasting power of attorney in place.

Before making a deputy appointment, the court will require sufficient evidence that you are the most appropriate person. For cohabiting couples, this can be trickier to establish than for those who are in a legally recognised union. Therefore, it is even more important for someone who is cohabiting to take steps to protect themselves in the event

Awaiting Government Guidelines for Re-Opening Registered Charity No. 1097115

It’s hard to believe that it will be nearly 6 months into 2021 before we can even start to consider re-opening the Age Concern (North Norfolk) Day Centre in Cremer Street, Sheringham. I’m sure many of our regular Clients are waiting with anticipation for the Government’s announcements on June 21st, as are we, so that we can ensure we have all the required actions in place to re-open safely and welcome you all back just as soon as we can.

We have kept in touch with many of our regular Clients by telephone, through Befriending calls for a chat and also to do some shopping and home assistance where necessary. Anyone is welcome to call if ever

you need some help. If we can’t provide it, we will be sure to point you in the right direction. Many of our regular Clients have been receiving our ‘Meals on Heels’ lunches and numbers have increased so hopefully, when we do re-open some of those new customers, will join us in person, at the Day Centre. But, for all of you, I am sure you are as eager as we are to see you seated around a table again with friends, enjoying a hot meal and dessert, a cup of tea and a good old catch-up.

On your return you will see some new faces waiting to meet, greet and get to know you, including our new Day Centre manager, Anneliese Maerz who joined us recently and

who has lots of interesting ideas for events and activities she hopes you will enjoy.

So, although we still have to be patient for a little longer, I’m sure we can all see a brighter situation ahead, after what has been a very difficult time for us all and a very sad time for some. Keep positive, keep healthy and keep looking forward to meeting up again with staff and friends at the Day Centre.

Letheringsett Mill Needs Help

Letheringsett Watermill is one of our local gems. One of only 24 water driven flour mills in the country, a rare one at that, as unlike other mills which are run as historical trusts or by local authorities, Letheringsett is one of only three independent mills. Mentioned in the Doomsday Book as ‘Leringseta’ it has a very long and proud history. The present building was built in 1802 and produced flour until 1972 when it became an animal feed mill.

The Mill was leased in 1987 by Michael

Thurlow with a view to restoring it back to its former glory. Mike was not a miller by trade but researched the process of producing flour and, after much time, money and extensive restoration, production resumed and continues to this day.

Mike sadly passed away in 2013 and two years later his wife, Marion, also died, leaving their daughter Michelle to continue their work and develop the business. Michelle is passionate about continuing her parents’ legacy and keeping her flour production as local as possible. Grain is sourced within North Norfolk and her flour is supplied to local bakeries and shops. The Mill now produces 15 different flours including spelt flour, an ancient grain introduced to this country by the Romans.

The stones are made from Derbyshire Gritstone and Dutch Emery Quartz, and the work is costing the Mill £2993, a sum that is hard to find in these difficult times.

Even if you have swum the channel, you can still drown if you slip in or your boat should capsize because other factors can claim your life such as unseen currents, the freezing cold water (even on a hot day) banging your head as you fall – the list is endless. With a life jacket or buoyancy aid you stand an excellent chance of survival. Another problem on our water ways has been drinking and drowning. If only individuals - who went back to their boat and paid particular attention to the effect alcohol can have on them slipping into the in the water - they may still be alive to-day. Yes “If only.” how many times has that been said when there is a report published of a drowning tragedy?

■ When on the beach, swim between the lifeguard flags and parallel to the shore. ■ Supervise children all the times.

It only takes an average of three minutes for someone to drown. Children who paddle alone can slip over and it only needs a small volume of water to drown in.

■ Obey all flags and notices.

A red flag means absolutely no swimming - no matter how tranquil and appetising the water looks.

■ Keep out of rivers and ponds. They are very dangerous and unhealthy.

If you adhere to a proper mind set this summer, you are no doubt in for a very enjoyable safe time both in and on the water.

Run Your Age for Age UK

Here at Yorkshire Building Society, we are proud to be partnering with Age UK until 2023. Together, we’re aiming to raise £1 million to launch the Building Better Lives programme, strengthening the financial resilience of thousands of older people before they reach crisis point. This will help to address and overcome issues such as fuel poverty, unsuitable housing and the financial shocks that later life can bring.

At the Cromer branch staff members have been doing a ‘Run Your Age’ challenge throughout the month of May. Our combined age is 218 so we proposed a challenge to run 218 miles and attempt to raise £750 for Age UK.

North Norfolk Viking Swimmers, Romilly Hammond, aged 13 Isaac Buchan 12 and his younger brother Noah,10 "swam the channel" in a relay tandem swim in Beeston Hall School pool, where all three attend: raising £1,469 so far for much needed club funds and the River's Trust.

The trio took the plunge as early as 7am and finished at 7-05pm covering the 22 miles distance channel swimmers have to complete between England and France. They were supported by fellow club members who also swam with them at various stages. Club Captain Katy Colman, Michael Sayer, Amiyah Hawes and Lead coach Sam Watts, who also did a stint in the pool. At the conclusion he said:

“This is the first real club event for us since the lock downs began and it brought the club together. I would like to congratulate Romilly, Isaac and Noah for their endeavour especially as they had to battle against the cold and rain and thanks to all the supporters and helpers who came along to cheer them on.”

News from the Club house

Cromer Marrams bowling green on Runton Road is possibly the best place in North Norfolk to follow government covid-19 guidance, fun exercise in a safe space with lots of fresh air, you can’t beat it! We have all the official COVID safety features in place, tried and tested last season, so come and try us. Even if you have never played before, there is something for everyone and all abilities, you will be most welcome to join us. Come and try a game for free, all equipment provided. You can’t beat our cliff top location to revitalise you on a sunny Cromer day!

Our Bowls Big Weekend events started slowly on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon but attracted a few locals and several enquiries and lots of family visitors, young and old, on Sunday afternoon. After playing golf bowls and a ‘proper’ game participants enjoyed an ice cream or chocolate. Monday afternoon was also well attended by visitors who enjoyed playing followed by cake and prosecco. If you missed the event but are interested, please get in touch anytime.

The playing membership subscription is now £45 inclusive and social membership £15. Visitor roll up green fees are £3.50 per 2-hour session. Sessions are available morning, afternoon and evening every day of the week from now until late September. The bar is open for drinking (inside or outside-covid restrictions allowing) on Fridays from 7pm. Drinks at club prices! We have played another ‘spoon drive’ with 16 members involved. Particularly enjoying their afternoon and winning again were Jean N, Keith P and Jane C.

The first Federation match of the season saw Cromer visit Holt Tawny Owls and win convincingly 9-0. Roger O, Neil C and Nigel C won 23-8, Keith P, James P and Gary Y won 25-11 and John B, Ian H and Neil P won 15-8. The second game at home to Swanton Abbott gave Cromer a 5½ to 3½ victory. Roger O,

Neil C and Nigel C won 19-11 and Bob A, Ian H and Neil P won 13-11. The overall shot score finished level at 44-44.

The NBA mens first league game was at Cawston against Reepham Nomads and Cromer had a convincing 68-45 shot win, 5-0. Roger O, David M, James P and Nigel C won 23-17, Roger G, Philip E, David B and Gary Y won 22-8 and Ian H, Derek M, David G and Neil P won 23-20. The next game at home to Lakeside Pilgrims gained Cromer a 4-1 victory, 68-47 shots. John Br, Derek M, David G and Neil P won 34-9 and Bob A, Philip E, Marc S and David Be won 24-15.

The first friendly game for over 18 months was keenly contested with Kings Lynn BC visiting us. There were 3 rink wins each but Cromer came out on top 105 shots to 95. Winning rinks for Cromer were David M, Brenda S and David Be (20-15), Roger O, George B and Jean N (28-15) and Bob A, Jackie P and James P (19-15).
