Each Needs Volunteers

We need YOU to help us keep our shops open and raise vital funds!

With many of our shop volunteers currently unable to lend a hand due to the pandemic, the number of hours’ support we normally receive is down more than 50%.

We are facing a financial deficit over the next 12 months, following disruption to fundraising and retail, and at the same time our care and support is more important than ever as vulnerable families become exhausted from shielding.

RNLI Cromer pass plans during lockdown

It is very important we manage our retail activity back to sustainable levels of income, but we will not be able to do this without more volunteer support.

Continued from front cover...

Two others Steve Guest and Mike Wass are now qualified as Deputy Launch Authorities, which enables them to authorise launches of the lifeboats.

Mike Wass

Might you be able to help? Just a couple of hours a week can make a difference.

There are so many ways you can support us, from sorting donations and dressing windows to running the till and listing items on our eBay shop, and we always guarantee a friendly welcome!

John Redmond, Lifeboat Operations Manager for Cromer’s RNLI Lifeboat, says: ‘We are proud of these people who have worked hard and with a lot of dedication to pass these requirements to become trained crew’.

Why not pop in to your local EACH shop – we have 43 right across the region – chat to our team and arrange a taster session? Find out more about becoming a retail volunteer, including a full list of our shop locations and phone numbers, at www.each.org.uk/retail-volunteers.

Alternatively, please contact EACH Volunteer Services on 01223 205183 or at volunteerservices@each.org.uk.

A Note from the editor

Two New Exhibitions at Sheringham Museum at The Mo

Where did Spring go, did it happen when I wasn’t looking? As I am writing (bank holiday Monday) the wind is blowing and the rain is beating on the window. Just when we are looking forward to getting out and about as things are opening up, the weather has other ideas. There were still one or two stoic souls eating fish and chips on the beach today determined to enjoy their al fresco dining experience! It is good to see businesses open again and everyone keeping to social distancing. It bodes well for the next phase of the lockdown easing.

May 19th – October 30th After our enforced lockdown, we are looking forward to re-opening on Wednesday, 19th May, with entry conditions in place to comply with Government regulations.

The museum will be opening for four days each week - Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday for two sessions for visitors each day: 11am - 1pm and 2pm - 4pm, with our museum shop open the whole day.

For the Bank Holiday at the end of May we will be opening on Monday 31st May and Tuesday 1st June as well as August Bank Holiday weekend.

Like many gardeners, I am champing at the bit to get my patch ready for the Summer, the greenhouse is full to bursting just waiting for the risk of frost to pass. Perhaps now is the time to dust off that barbeque and prepare to welcome friends and family back for the gatherings we have all missed so much. Let’s hope for more clement weather in the weeks to come and a return to more normal times.

Please check our website www.sheringhammuseum.co.uk for up-todate times and on-line booking (subject to change in accordance with latest governmental advice).

Sheringham, on the glorious North Norfolk coast, has a history that stretches back over a thousand years. The Museum tells the story of the town and its proud, brave, independent people over the last two centuries, told through beautiful displays packed with interesting things to see, hear, and do.

Whatever you plans, enjoy your May magazine.

Keep safe and well.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Sheringham Museum’s opening and 10 years of being situated on the ‘Mo’ site. To celebrate, we have installed some new displays and enhanced others. Together, they tell the story of Sheringham’s past, its geology and palaeontology, its social history, its lifeboat /fishing heritage and more, through photographs, videos, artwork and, of course, interesting artefacts.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offe fers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

The Natural World we are gardening in…

Hello everybody, how is your garden growing in the present climate? This month I just want you to think about the Weather - Climate Insects and growing in this increasingly topsy turvey climate we are experiencing. I want to also show you how I have got a head start on certain things as well.

the plant and not on the foliage, it will stop the evaporation from the leaves. It will also stop the plant being scorched by the water droplets on the plant acting as a magnifier of the sun. 3. Avoid water running off, draining through the soil and evaporating by putting down mulches of good compost, grass cuttings on top of paper and cardboard or straw. This will help keep the soil moist.

Where have all the April showers gone? Not only has it been the driest April but one on record, it has and still remains the coldest April since 1980s. So, what is it with the weather?

4. If your soil is light and sandy then you need to improve the body of the soil by putting into it organic matter or manure or indeed place it on the top and let the worms pull it into the soil.

Last year in May, I was in a drought and watering like mad. It seems likely to be the same, although rain is forecast over this Bank Holiday weekend as I write this article. We now need to become Savvy Gardeners with a bit more insight and intuition.

So how do I water correctly and use the water efficiently? The soil is like a sponge and can act as a reservoir for water, also different soil types hold the water better than others. So, we need to understand that soil will either hold moisture, or it will evaporate or drain straight through. The other issue is how water will run off if we have these increasingly heavy showers. Here are some ways we can help to achieve this.

1. Water in the late afternoon or evening if possible and check with a trowel how deeply the water has penetrated the soil. By watering later in the day, you are not losing water to evaporation through the sun or wind.

2. Target the water at the soil directly below

Jams, Chutneys, Pickles, Flour

I have noticed that many people are sowing and raising plants too early and garden centres have bedding plants in very early. This is fine if you have a greenhouse - cold frame to bring them on and harden them off. However, many people don't have that and lose the plants to the frost or cold winds. I have potatoes in bags in the green house now coming into flower and strawberry plants in flower which hopefully, I will be picking near the end of the month. I have also grown my first early peas in guttering and have now put them outside on the allotment.

However, and this is the important point, until we lose the frosts and cold evenings, together with the cold winds nothing is going to grow. So don't go rash, there is still lots of time and plants and much more will catch up.

7 West Street, Cromer. tel: 01263 519 039

Now is the time to start courgettes,

Open Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm

Part of Cromer life since 2010

Attracting beneficial insects, grow flowers that attract pest -eating insects alongside your vegetables. This should cut down on pests such as aphids and caterpillars.

By growing strong scented vegetables / flowers such as onions, garlic or marigolds around carrots they will mask the smell of the carrots and confuse the carrot fly that can smell carrots up to a mile away, marigolds will help with dealing with whitefly in the greenhouse.

Intercropping growing fast-maturing crops in between longer-term crops keep the ground covered so fewer weeds grow and makes the most of limited space. The most famous is the three sisters, sweetcorn, pumpkins or squashes and climbing beans. The corn supports the beans, the squashes suppress the weeds, and the beans take up nitrogen from the air.

That is all for this month happy gardening.

Hospital Charity Lottery to launch with £25,000 jackpot

A new weekly lottery which supports the work of the Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals Charity will be launched this week with the chance to win a weekly £25,000 jackpot.

The Hospitals Charity raises vital funds to support the N&N Hospital, Cromer & District Hospital and the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital. For every £1 entry, at least 50p comes directly to the N&N Hospitals Charity to help us improve the hospital environment, purchase the very latest in state-of-the-art equipment, support staff welfare and provide extra care over and above what is currently provided by the NHS.

When someone joins the hospital lottery a unique six-digit lottery number is allocated. A random winning number is drawn every Friday with the aim to match the winning numbers. To win a prize, those who sign up need to match four, five or six digits of the winning numbers in the correct sequence. Match all six-digits in sequence and the weekly prize jackpot is £25,000 with £1,000 for five matching digits and £25 for four digits.

John Paul Garside, Director of the N&N Hospitals Charity, said, “The funding from the charity lottery will help us to improve patient and staff experience, helping to fund equipment and support staff welfare above and beyond our normal NHS funding. By supporting the lottery, you will help make a difference to your local hospital, its patients and staff.

The lottery is open to everyone over the age of 18, including hospital staff. To join the lottery, go to www.nnuhcharitylottery.org.uk or call 0370 050 9240. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

A warm welcome to our new Day Centre manager

Looking towards June and Step 4 on the Government’s Road Map to recovery… you will see some changes at Age Concern some general maintenance and improvements are currently being undertaken but more importantly we have engaged a new Centre Manager – Anneliese Maerz who joined us in February with excellent qualifications and the experience necessary to support our future needs.

Hadleigh Special Breeds Farm and a dementia home in Southend; a prison group of older men with dementia; and a community group with the Sheringham Salvation Army.

This is one activity she would hope to develop with us at Age Concern (North Norfolk) once the centre re-opens.

Anneliese Maerz joins us after a career of over 40 years in social work and social care in the statutory, independent and voluntary sectors in Northern Ireland, Lincolnshire and Norfolk.

The Trustees welcome Anneliese Maerz, new Day Centre manager Anneliese to the team at Age Concern (North Norfolk) along with taking this opportunity to thank and offer our best wishes to Juliet English who retired as a valued and hard-working Trustee at the end of March.

Most recently she worked as the Older People’s Specialist for the Salvation Army covering the East of England. Living in Sheringham for the past 15 years, she is delighted to be able to walk to work and start to meet the older people of this area of Norfolk.

She has a passion for older people and is a great believer in them being ‘fruitful in later life’, never being too old to learn something new. She herself learned to play a brass instrument when she was 50 and regrets not having learned when she was younger.

We wish them both well.

Enter Stage Left?

Stage Direct amateur theatre group are appealing for new and past members for post lockdown shows.

Anneliese’s career has encompassed hands-on practice, supervision, management, education and training of staff from multidisciplinary settings; community and residential work with learning disability, sensory impairment, dementia and physical disability and older people.

This prestigious North Norfolk based drama group have come out of the lockdown blues with exiting new projects. They have kept interest going with zoom reads etc. and now are looking for people who would be interested in helping them realize their goals of being able to perform in front of a live theatre again. They have a staunch membership but need some more people on board to be able to move forward.

She is not a person who is flappable in a crisis having led the Emergency Crisis Support Team in Northern Ireland responding to both civil and terrorist-related incidents.

Her interest in dementia has opened new areas of work in Cognitive Stimulation Therapy successfully running a Care Farming project with

VACANCY SUPPORT WORKER

Air ambulance CEO and founder retires

East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has announced that its CEO, Patrick Peal, will be retiring from the charity in June after seven years in the role. EAAA’s Director of Operations Matthew Jones has been appointed as Patrick’s successor and will take the reins at the end of June.

a year and raising £8 million annually. I’m proud to say both of these areas have significantly increased, by about 60%, with 2,700 missions attended in 2019 and over £14 million raised in the same year. That’s a huge testament to the community that keeps this charity flying and I’m really excited to see how EAAA continues to progress in order to help the East Anglian community even more.”

Patrick played an integral part in setting up the life-saving charity just over 20 years ago, led the charity as a former Trustee for some eleven years and has been the charity’s CEO since 2014.

During Patrick Peal’s tenure, the service has expanded to cover 24 hours a day every day of the year. To date, this has involved flying by day and by night, with the middle of the night covered by rapid response vehicles. His final act at EAAA in the summer will be extending the flying service 24/7.

The charity being a cause very close to his heart, Patrick said: “Being CEO of East Anglian Air Ambulance is the best job I’ve ever had, but all good things must come to an end eventually. The charity is approaching an exciting new era of 24/7 helicopter operations and now is the right time for me personally to

Patrick Peal retiring CEO of EAAA

step back and let someone else lead EAAA into what I’m sure will be a very exciting future.

Patrick continued: “I’m extremely lucky that I’ve been involved with the charity from the very beginning and the transformation I’ve seen in what this charity can do for our patients really is outstanding. EAAA simply wouldn’t exist without the fantastic support of the local community and that is something that I’ve always been keen to remember and advocate to the rest of the team.

“When I took on the role of CEO seven years ago EAAA was attending about 1,700 missions

The Chairman, Sir William Cubitt, says: “It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Patrick Peal this year. He has lived and breathed EAAA for much of the last 20 years and is rightly credited with its great success over that time. The charity has benefited hugely from his ambitious vision, dynamism and charisma which has brought such a professional lifesaving operation to East Anglia. He has set the charity up well for the future and we very much look forward to the next stage of its story under the capable leadership of Matthew Jones who is already well known to the charity, and the charity to him.”

Air ambulance Trek 24 challenge coming back to Norfolk

This summer East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) will be hosting its first large-scale fundraising challenge since August 2019 in the form of Trek 24; an organised 24 kilometre or 24 mile walk along the Norfolk coast.

Two Trek 24 events were planned to take place in 2020 but both were unable to go ahead due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Optimistically looking ahead to this summer, EAAA is excited to now be organising three Trek 24 events across the region and bringing Trek 24 back to north Norfolk, finishing at Holkham Hall.

year’s Trek 24 events will each be as successful.

Exact routes will be released in due course, the Trek 24 timetable is as follows:

● Trek 24 Suffolk: Saturday 14 August, finishing at Sotterley Estate.

● Trek 24 Bedfordshire: Saturday 4 September, starting and finishing at Hexton Manor.

● Trek 24 Norfolk: Sunday 12 September, finishing at Holkham Hall.

The life-saving charity has two helicopter emergency teams covering East Anglia and aims to raise £15 million a year to deliver and develop its service. Trek 24 is a guided 24 km, or 24 mile walk to help raise vital funds to help the charity start flying 24/7, which it hopes to do later this summer.

The very first Trek 24 event took place in 2019 in Norfolk and saw hundreds of walkers setting off from either West Runton or Cley, all finishing at Holkham Hall, and raised over £100,000 for the helicopter emergency medical service charity. The charity is hopeful this

Early bird tickets are on sale now until 31 May from £20 with £200 sponsorship pledge. There

A spokesperson from Holkham Hall said: “Given our rural, and often inaccessible, location we have seen at first hand the incredible, life-saving service that the East Anglian Air Ambulance provides, and we are very keen to show our support by hosting the Trek 24 Norfolk event at Holkham this September. There is no denying that for the participants Trek 24 will be a significant challenge, but we are sure that the beautiful landscapes and sea views along the north Norfolk coast will help them along the route back to the finish line in Holkham Park! We wish all participants the very best of luck and thank them in advance for raising much-needed funds for EAAA.”

Busy busy busy

For those of you walking up Overstrand Road, you may have noticed a new sight appearing this year. Giant tipis situated on the North Lawn of The Grove were erected in November and since then, we, at The Grove, have been busy building the adjoining kitchen and bar, landscaping and getting ready to open Sundown, our new seasonal restaurant serving Norfolk tapas, pizza and ice-cream.

So if you are feeling hungry and fancy a treat, you can book either the main restaurant, an afternoon tea or table at Sundown via our website. Or if you fancy a nosey, come and say hello, however busy we are, we are never too busy to talk. 01263 512412

The tapas menu includes, Wells cockles, grilled prawns with oyster sauce, BBQ artichoke, Norfolk samphire, and of course, fresh Cromer crab. Have I got you salivating yet?

The pizzas include John’s Escape – which is virtually all garden produce, The Gangway, which is crab, anchovies, prawns, and Gressingham Special, which is Hoisin duck. How about now?

But that is not all that’s been happening. This year, we have also revamped our afternoon teas, built a terrace on the Conker Lawn keeping those in mind who like to sit outside and enjoy an afternoon tea or

Sultana Tea Loaf

This tea loaf is very easy a good keeper and freezes well, just the thing to have in reserve for unexpected guests. It is moist and delicious spread with a little butter. You need to plan ahead as the fruit is soaked overnight prior to baking.

Ingredients 250g/9oz sultanas 100g/4oz candied mixed peel 140g/5oz light muscovado sugar 300ml/1/2pt hot black tea made with 2 teabags (Earl Grey is good) Butter for greasing 300g/11oz self-raising flour 1 egg, beaten

Method Put all the dried fruit and the sugar in a large bowl and pour over the hot tea, stir well, cover and leave overnight to soak. The next day, heat the oven to 150C/gas2 and lightly grease a 2lb loaf tin and line with baking parchment. Stir the flour and egg into the fruit mixture until well combined and there are no pockets of flour. Pour into the lined loaf tin and level the mixture. Bake for 1 1/2 - 1 3/4 hours until well risen and a skewer inserted into the middle comes away clean. Cool for 10mins in the tin then turn out onto a cooling rack. When cool, enjoy with a cup of tea. Eat Cake for Veg’s Sake!

Here’s a great way to enjoy a fabulously delicious cake and pretend to be a bit healthy at the same time! Carrot cake sounds like a contradiction in terms, but the addition of vegetables into cakes has been going on since time immemorial, and if your kids won’t eat veg this may be a really sneaky and great way to get some into them! On a serious note, it’s also a terrific way to achieve a really moist cake, and one that is a good keeper too. I have always found carrot cakes to be a bit too oily for me, as the recipe usually calls for oil rather than butter, so I devised my own to get around this. The result is a really moist and scrumptious cake, which I don’t tend to ice as I don’t think it needs it, but you could if you wanted to. You can’t really go wrong with this recipe; I make mine in a 2lb loaf tin for ease of slicing, and it’s best if you make it a day ahead of eating (if you can bear to wait that long).

3 eggs whisked with 3 tblsp milk 6 oz Grated Carrot 4 oz sultanas or raisins

Cream together butter, sugar and almond essence until pale and light.

Sift together all dry ingredients in a separate bowl.

Slowly add a little egg and a tablespoon of flour mix to the creamed butter mixture, beating well to avoid curdling (if this happens just add a little more of the flour mix and keep beating)

bake in the oven on 180° for approx 35 – 40 mins, or until a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean.

Rest in tin for 10 mins, and then turn out onto a wire cooling rack.

Once all the egg and flour has been thoroughly mixed together, stir in the grated zest, carrot and finally the sultanas.

Keeps in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Carolyn Burn

Today she stands alone Before the ocean he has crossed, Her heart so far from home Must know such depth To hallow loss. For all the gold and diamonds That have weighed upon her head, She would that her Odysseus Remained with her instead. For what good are a thousand ships To serve a royal throne When no tide can surmount the grief That strands us so alone? Yet after flags are lowered And chapels echo song, Her star will rise to steer by, And the voyage will go on.

Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month at Toll Barn Vets!

May marks the annual Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month – a month where we celebrate and recognise the skills and value veterinary nurses bring to our team and the health and welfare of our patients.

The title Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) can be used by nurses who undertake vigorous practical and theoretical training and examinations to qualify as Veterinary Nurses and be awarded entry onto the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Register. They follow the Code of Professional Conduct for Veterinary Nurses and once qualified they are required to keep their skills up to date by undertaking Continued Professional Development to ensure we always treat our patients with the most up to date skills and techniques. Several of our RVN’s have undertaken further qualifications in particular areas of interest including Behaviour, Feline Care, Physiotherapy, Exotics and Dentistry.

At Toll Barn Vets we are proud of our skilled team of 9 RVNs who work closely with our veterinary surgeons to ensure your pets receive the best possible care. RVNs use their technical knowledge, hands on expertise and empathy for a whole range of tasks including advising clients on their pets health and welfare both in person and over the phone,

triaging emergency patients, administering life-saving first aid and CPR, blood sampling,

and TLC.

The skills and knowledge recognised by the RVN qualification is why at Toll Barn Vets we ONLY allow RVNs to perform our veterinary nurse clinics and to monitor General anaesthetics and anaesthetic recoveries for our patients.

Some of the Nursing team members (l-r) Graham, Lucie (Head Nurse), Ryan & Delphi placing intravenous catheters, performing in house laboratory tests, taking x-rays, dressing wounds, assisting with surgical procedures, monitoring patients during general anaesthesia, preparing patients for surgery, caring for patients after surgery, caring for sick hospitalised inpatients by medicating, wound management, monitoring of key parameters, fluid therapy and very importantly love

Our RVN’s provide a huge range of clinics to help our patients including Laser Therapy and Physiotherapy to help our pets with arthritis, soft tissue injuries and wound healing, claw clipping, microchipping, Second vaccinations, flea and worming clinics to discuss your pets lifestyle and risk factors and then tailor a parasite program to their specific needs, post operation checks, blood pressure monitoring, diabetes clinics, senior pet checks, puppy and kitten checks, dental checks, 6 month healthchecks for VIP members and nutritional advice.

At Toll Barn Vets we are also an Approved Training Practice allowing us to train future generations of veterinary nurses to our high standards! To find out more about training to become an RVN visit the British Veterinary Nursing Association website.

Art and Artists Unlocked

In a new venture for this year, 102 North Norfolk artists have formed a co-operative in order to open their studios from 29th May to 6th June.

OPEN NEW DOORS

The studios are organised into 15 local trails. Artists taking part in the Sheringham trail are Steven Levitt in Sheringham, Steven Paterson in Beeston, Emily Rose in West Runton and Lesley Mendes in East Runton.

The South of Sheringham trail starts with Joan Sandford-Cook Turnstone by Angie Maddigan and Sheringham painter Angie Maddigan at Sunset Cottage in West Beckam, where the studios are very well ventilated and there is ample parking. The trail continues with Mo Teeuw in West Beckham, then on to a group of 4 painters: Anna Cloutman, Mirka Mc Neill-Farmer, Pia Henderson and Lesley Ash in a studio between West Beckham and Gresham. And finally, Victoria and Martin Kurrein in Baconsthorpe.

Redwings Set to Welcome Visitors Again

Redwings Horse Sanctuary has announced the date for the reopening of its two Norfolk visitor centres.

With safety measures in place, the charity looks forward to welcoming visitors back to Redwings Caldecott, near Great Yarmouth, and Redwings Aylsham, north of Norwich, from Friday 30th April.

The centres will open every weekend, Friday to Monday from 10:30am. Paddock walks will close at 3pm, but gift shops and cafes will remain open until 4pm. Supporters will be asked to pre-book tickets for their visits online, but entry remains free.

The centres have been closed since December following a year of disrupted opening due to coronavirus restrictions. The Sanctuary estimates the disruption to its Norfolk centres alone saw them miss out on over £200,000 in fundraising income in 2020 – a blow for the charity which is 100% funded by donations. Debbie Scott, Redwings’ Head of Fundraising, said: “We’re delighted to be able to welcome our supporters back and see them enjoy spending time with our rescued horses and donkeys again. As well as a major source of

income, our visitor centres are one of the key ways we share our work and build relationships with our supporters. Traditionally, 60% of the new donors we record every year decide to support us because they’ve enjoyed a day out at one of our visitor centres, but this number fell to 10% in 2020. This means we could be counting the cost of closure for years to come.

Redwings Caldecott is home to a herd of more than 30 lovable donkeys and gentle giant Shire cross Fox, as well as a peaceful newly opened Memory Garden. Meanwhile, at Redwings Aylsham you will find Redwings’ own ‘Black Beauty’, rescued Friesian horse Maya, and ‘The Gangsters’ – an adorable gang of miniature Shetland ponies! The site also has dedicated wildlife walks and ponds.

The charity has put in new measures to ensure the safety of their visitors including: • Visitors are asked to book a time slot for their arrival to ensure the number of people at the centres remains at a safe level at all times. • Entry remains free but donations would be welcome towards the care of Redwings’

rescued residents. • There will be one-way routes around the centres to help visitors maintain social distancing. • Cafes and gift shops will be open in line with current Government guidelines. • Visitors are encouraged to visit Redwings’ website for the latest news on the available facilities before travelling.

For those unable to travel to Redwings’ visitor centres they can follow the charity’s social media channels to enjoy daily updates on its rescued residents.

For further information about visiting Redwings, call 01508 481000 or head to www.redwings.org.uk/visiting.

Laser Facelift at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic

Have you got a few days to spare each month? Looking for a new hobby that is engaging and interes ng, with the chance to meet and socialise in a dynamic and fun environment and make new friends? We welcome new volunteers at the North Norfolk Railway. Our services run from April to October with special trains at Christmas. Our Sta ons at Sheringham, Weybourne and Holt have opportuni es to work on the pla orm, mee ng and gree ng customers, buffet and shop and full training will be given.

More and more patients with busy lives are looking for less invasive treatments with less downtime to improve their profile and tightness of their face and neck. The laser assisted face and neck lift is an exciting, effective, and safe option for patients who wish to tighten the skin and underlying tissues of their face and neck. For good candidates, liquefying a small amount of fat to smooth the contours and heating the underlying tissues to tighten the skin may be the answer they are looking for.

We like it best as it avoids a tell-tale skin incision or scar in front of the ear. Any surgical procedure can cause a scar so we try and avoid this risk by not cutting the skin.

When to Choose the Laser Assisted Facelift Treatment Laser assisted facelifting is great for men or women. A good candidate for this procedure is: • in good general health • not smoking • has localised areas of fat in the jowl area and under the chin • has good skin integrity.

Come along and have a cuppa on us in the Sheringham Buffet on the first Saturday of each month between 10 am and 2pm

How does the Laser Facelift Work? A tiny 0.6 mm laser fibre is passed through fat between the skin and the muscles. The laser energy heats the surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening. A CO2 laser is then used to ‘shrink wrap’ the skin surface.

Recovery and Results Typically, only one treatment is required to obtain optimal results. Initial results can be seen within one week, with continued improvement over the next three to four months as tissues continue to tighten and heal. Coltishall Clinic offers a full range of Cosmetic Medical and Surgical Laser procedures. We offer a range a solutions including non-surgical

Bigger Picture Project in Cromer Mapped Out

Local people and visitors to Cromer continue to be delighted and surprised by full-sized replicas of famous paintings, displayed outside in various locations around the town. During lockdown, the Project brought great art to Cromer while its residents couldn’t travel to galleries and exhibitions. Now as visitors start to return, the town has become a gallery in itself with 20 pictures on display in different parts of the town, which are regularly moved and replaced to increase the sense of surprise and enjoyment for passers-by. The Group has now produced a leaflet and map of the town with the locations of all the pictures, and they hope that local people and visitors will enjoy exploring the town and finding all the paintings.

The Project started in December 2020, with a copy of the famous painting 'Children’s Games' by Pieter Bruegel the Elder being displayed outside the Community Centre in Garden Street. As the months have gone by, other

works of art, including Vincent van Gogh’s ‘The Starry Night, Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s ‘The Boating Party’ have appeared on the walls of shops and offices. There are also two pieces by Paul Cezanne, two extraordinary works by Giuseppe Arcimboldo and a huge Cardinal by El Greco all waiting to be discovered in surprising locations around town. Information about each painting is available from a small plaque displayed nearby, which directs people to more details about the paintings and artists on the Cromer Artspace website.

Cromer Artspace chair, Phil Harris says “We have been delighted by the response to the Bigger Picture Project, which has been positively received by local people and visitors alike and we are grateful for the backing of North Norfolk District Council, Cromer Town Council and a number of local business, who have supported us to help to brighten up the town during these difficult times. Our new

map will be a fantastic way for people revisit old favourites and discover new paintings and artists, as well as getting to know Cromer town itself”

The Project was due to come to an end in June, but the level of interest and support locally means that the Group hopes to extend it into 2022, thanks to help from local individuals and businesses offering extra funds.

Building a Granny Annexe

by Charlotte Bentley, Chartered Legal Executive, Hayes + Storr

If you are thinking about building an annexe for an elderly parent or other family members, you will need to have the necessary planning consents in place before you start work. If not, the local planning authority could require you to remove the dwelling and return your home to its original state. Being unable to show the requisite consents may also cause problems when you come to sell your home. Planning permission, do you need it?

The good news is that depending on what you want to build, and where you live, you are allowed certain building works without having to make a planning application. Permitted development rights allow the improvement or extension of a home without the need to apply for planning permission, where that would be out of proportion with the impact of the works carried out.

However, a separate self-contained building in your garden is likely to need an application for full planning permission. A home extension, which satisfies other conditions relating to height and physical layout, may not.

If you’re unsure whether planning

permission is required, you can apply for a certificate of lawful development. This can give you peace of mind that your proposals are lawful from a planning perspective.

What other consents will you need?

relative contributions and what could happen in the future. For example, what legal interest, if any, will your parent have in your shared home?

There may be restrictions in your title deeds which mean that any building works require the consent of an adjoining landowner, or another third party. If your home is a leasehold property, then it’s likely you will need consent from your landlord for any structural alterations. If your home is subject to a mortgage, you may need your lender’s consent too.

Joint ownership as tenants in common may seem like the obvious and fairest choice, because it would allow each of you to have a fixed share, reflecting your different contributions. However, if your parent dies, their share in the property will pass as per instructions left in their will if they have one, or according to the rules of intestacy. You could then find yourself sharing ownership of your home with their beneficiary, which may not be what you had in mind at all.

What about stamp duty land tax?

Building an annexe should not ordinarily give rise to any liability for stamp duty land tax. However, stamp duty land tax will apply on any future sale of your property, affecting how attractive your home is to would-be buyers.

For further information about extending your home to share with relatives, contact Hayes + Storr on 01263 825959 and ask to speak to someone in the property department.

What about finance and ownership?

If you are combining finances with other family members, you should all be clear about the arrangement. Ensure there is a written agreement which reflects your true intentions. This should take account of your

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Our branch of Cats Protection was set up in June 2000 but prior to that Stephanie and I had been volunteers at the Dereham Branch. During our time there we met other like-minded people, including one lady who set up an independent charity to rescue stray cats and kittens plus neutering ferals, in the Fakenham area.

We have continued to have contact with her over the years and on occasion we have advised people who live in her area to contact her for help. I was therefore concerned when she contacted me recently asking whether we had taken in a feral mum and her kittens from her area. When I advised her that we had not, she explained that she had agreed to take these into care but when she went to pick them up, was advised that they had already been collected by North Walsham Cats Protection. I reassured her that we had been unaware of these cats but, if we had been we would probably have referred the caller to her as they were in her area.

We are the only branch of Cats Protection in North Norfolk, although there are other branches plus two adoption centres in Norfolk. The Branches are Anglian Coastal, Breckland and Norwich and the Adoption Centres are at Dereham and Downham Market. There are other charities in the post codes we cover, some of which also rescue other animals, and although we do on occasion work with some of them, none are connected to Cats Protection.

Fortunately, during lockdown, we have been able to continue to take in cats and als re-home them. This is mainly due to our cats being in pens in peoples’ gardens. Prospective owners have happily complied with social distancing and the restrictions and procedures that have been necessary when viewing the cats. This has also applied when they return to collect new members to join their households. Similar care has also been needed for visits to the vets for health checks for new cats in care

plus any needing treatment. The vets have all also been extremely helpful by neutering the cats under our special neutering scheme plus feral cats from the two Midnight previously in our care colonies we have recently been helping. Although the situation has eased, we will still need to be careful as volunteers. Although most of us have now been vaccinated we will still proceed with caution to ensure we can continue to care for the cats.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

The matches at Marrams in May/June are; May 4th Cawston ‘B’ (6.45pm), May 18th Swanton Abbott (6.45pm), May 23rd Kings Lynn BC (2.00pm), May 26th Lakeside Pilgrims (6.30pm), June 4th Sheringham Morley (2.00pm), June 8th Sheringham Morley (6.45pm), Ladies v Gentlemen (2.00pm), June 19th Longthorpe BC (2.00pm), June 23rd Fakenham (6.30pm), June 29th Holt (6.45pm) and June 30th Cawston ‘A’ (2.00pm).

We have attracted new members to the club, from local and beyond, but would obviously welcome more. We have all the official COVID safety features in place, tried and tested last season, so come and try us. Even if you have never played before, there is something for everyone and all abilities, you will be most welcome to join us. Come and try a game for free, all equipment provided. You can’t beat our cliff top location to revitalise you on a sunny Cromer day! In fact, we have an extra bonus, as part of Bowls England initiative you can sample the delights of our cliff top home on the Runton Road during the weekend of 28th to 31st May as follows:

Competitive rugby returned to Scottow Park on 1st May, the Vikings hosting Holt in a friendly. Covid meant law changes on the field and social restrictions off it. Free kicks replaced scrums and mauls, whilst spectators booked in advance and wore masks whilst sitting at tables of six in a beer garden. The Vikings used 36 players in a match played in quarters of twenty minutes. Amongst the many newcomers were some who began their rugby careers as Minis at Scottow: Charlie and Joe Hawkins (re - joining from Crusaders), Henry Dewing was back after five seasons in London and Harry Agnew, who has played in the Championship. Coach Ryan Oakes was pleased with what he saw delivered on the pitch commenting, “it was important to get everyone back into the game: new players, old players, returning injured players and maturing colts.” After a return fixture at Holt on the 8th, the Vikings travel to Shelford this Saturday (15th).

There has been plenty of action across the rest of the Club too. The Youth, Minis & Valkyries are back on Sunday mornings having re-started on 11 April, whilst lockdown was lifted just in time for the Easter Holiday Camps to be held with what are thought to be a record number of nearly 200 attending. Elsewhere four players who came through the Youth system at North Walsham - George Loose, Callum Richardson, Cameron Tasker and Kip Horton - were included in Leicester Tigers Academy squad for the Premiership Academy competition.
