Northrepps 'Poppyland' Branch of The Royal British Legion

A short Remembrance Service will take place at St. Mary's, Northrepps, on Sunday 8th November 2020, outside at The War Memorial in the churchyard, commencing at 10.50.a.m. The two minutes Silence will be observed, and Poppy Wreaths will be laid. Covid-19 Regulations will be observed, with social distancing and the wearing of face masks. As we are limited to thirty, please contact the Branch Chairman (details at the end of this report) if you wish to attend.

home, and will photograph them and place them both on our Branch and Village Face book pages to share with everyone, and any of our residents who would like to do join them in making an arrangement, they welcome them to join them and photograph theirs too. Also, if anyone would like to, they may place an arrangement at The War Memorial garden.

Sadly this year, it will not be possible for members to go into our School and join with parents, staff and pupils for the Act of Remembrance, and our member Ted Briggs is very disappointed, as he always plays The Last Post and Reveille. The pupils are making paper poppies and placing them in their windows at home, and we encourage residents to join with them too, in support.

Jill and the Northrepps Flower Ladies usually do lovely displays of red, white and blue in our church at this time, but they are going ahead at

Our voluntary Branch Poppy co-ordinator and collectors who normally work so hard with our Poppy Appeal, sadly will not be out there with us this year, and we look forward to their return, hopefully next year.

A Note from the editor

It really feels like winter is upon us with the dark evenings and rediscovering our woolly jumpers, hats, and scarves. Thoughts turn to pumpkins and bonfires, but things will be very low key this year. With many public Guy Fawkes events not taking place there may be more domestic fireworks around this year and a greater need for being mindful of the safety our children and pets. Remember to stick to the firework code and keep your pets somewhere quiet and safe. As we are going to press the government has just announced a national lockdown, and Covid cases are rising in this area. Track and Trace may not be perfect but if you receive an alert please follow advice on isolating. If we are to come through this pandemic it is vital we follow the rules to protect our vulnerable and keep our local economy going. New lockdown rules mean that arrangements for seasonal events, church attendance and many other things have changed, please ensure you check how this affects your plans. With Christmas around the corner shopping for gifts is well underway. This is another way we can all support our local businesses, many offer home deliveries and all depend on the seasonal spend, so shop locally where you can.

Cromer Christmas Lights

By the time you read this you will be well aware that the Cromer Christmas Lights Volunteers have been busy putting the lights up in Cromer ready for a Covid restricted low-key switch-on but one which promises exciting new editions to the annual display.

A spokesperson for the group said “We have decided to use our limited reserve funds to make this happen as we believe that Cromer wouldn’t be Cromer without the lights, and the Christmas Trees, to welcome the festive period and most importantly lift the spirits and morale of our community, young and old”.

Cromer’s businesses have responded very positively to this news in what has been a very demanding trading year for many. With no means of raising funds, via raffles, tombolas or collecting buckets, financial donations are essential to this group of volunteers. “We aren’t a charity - we are actually providing a service which supports the traders and the community as a whole”.

Enjoy your November magazine. Keep well and safe. Jo – Editor

Members of the public have also asked where/how they can contribute, and arrangements have been made with the gift and card shop, UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS (at the corner in Church Street), to act as a collection point.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offe fers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

Kitchens and Crew Rooms: chefs share their experience - and recipes - for RNLI’s Fish Supper For Reis Khalil and Kharn Brown, the RNLI’s Fish Supper autumn fundraiser is the perfect combination of their two greatest passions – crewing the Cromer lifeboat, and cooking up a storm in their regular jobs as chefs.

Reis has been volunteering for the RNLI for 5 years. He’s now a member of the crew on both the station’s All-Weather and Inshore Lifeboats, and a mechanic on the smaller Inshore boat. In his day job, he’s the Head Chef at The Grove in Cromer. More recently, Reis has been joined by Kharn, both as a chef at The Grove and on the lifeboat crew.

making plans to launch its new al fresco dining facilities later in the year. It’s hoped opening night will double as a fundraiser for the RNLI’s Fish Supper campaign.

Reis said: ‘For me, cooking and volunteering on the lifeboat have always gone hand in hand. My first job, aged 16, was working for chef Paul Jeffries, who was Cromer lifeboat 2nd

‘Both lads have had to leave us mid-shift on a few occasions, but always for good reasons – and dinner always gets served!’

Kharn added: ‘We’re really lucky that Richard and the team at the Grove are so understanding. Usually only one of us leaves work if the pager goes off, so we’ve started playing ‘rock, paper, scissors’ to decide who stays and who goes!’

RNLI volunteers like Reis and Kharn are encouraging people to support them by signing up to host a Fish Supper this October, with donations being made in support of the lifesaving charity.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on the RNLI’s ability to generate income, so fundraising events are more important than ever, but with restrictions in place due the pandemic, the RNLI is encouraging people to host their Fish Suppers online, if they can’t be held in person. To sign up to host your own Fish Supper, and to find a load of fantastic recipes from some top celebrity chefs, visit: rnli.org/fish-supper

Reis and Kharn will have the chance to combine their two passions, withThe Grove

on the crew is another way we can do that. We’re looking forward to showing off our new facilities and hopefully raising some money for the charity along the way.

Photo: Jim Rice

Mechanic at the time. He always told such great stories of the old days – that inspired me to join the RNLI.’

Richard Graveling, Partner at The Grove, said: ‘We’ve supported Cromer RNLI as a family and at the hotel for a long time now – helping Reis and Kharn to volunteer

As for a recipe to try this Fish Supper, here’s a suggestion from Reis: ‘Being a local lad, in my opinion you can’t beat a Cromer crab, eaten out of the shell, with lots of sea salt, black pepper and vinegar. However, The Grove’s ‘Crab Eggs Benedict’ is also a massive winner for me. A modern twist on a classic which is a big hit with our diners. The recipe? That’s a secret!’

‘Lester’ painting donated to RNLI Cromer

RNLI Cromer was contacted recently by Peter Waterman, a long time follower of the RNLI who had painted Cromer’s all weather lifeboat ‘Lester’ on the slipway.

During his travels around the country, he visited as many stations as he could before the restrictions imposed by the Covid Pandemic.

So far Peter has completed seven other paintings for stations in the south east of England. These stations include Grays, Lowestoft, Skegness etc. Peters efforts are aimed at stations auctioning the paintings to raise money for the RNLI.

The painting Peter donated of Southends RNLI lifeboat was auctioned at a Charity evening held by the station there in January 2020 and raised £220 for the RNLI.

His painting was accepted gratefully by John Redmond and Rob Park of RNLI Cromer and will help raise valuable funds later this year or next.

North Norfolk Railway Festive Trains

The North Norfolk Railway based at Sheringham has invested in special measures to ensure the highly popular Santa Specials and the Norfolk Lights Express trains can continue to operate this festive period.

The Santa Specials will operate from 28th November at weekends until the 18th

December then daily up to and including the 24th December. There are four trains planned each day the first departing Sheringham at 10 am. Each family booking will reserve an individual compartment, currently for up to a maximum of 6 people, to comply with the current Covid measures required by H. M. Government. Trains will continue to be treated with a special spray which the Railway has been using, since it restarted it operates in July, to fight the Covid virus. In addition, all compartments will be cleaned after each trip all to provide a safe environment for our passengers. The Santa grotto will also provide a safe walk through of festive scenes including 100 Christmas Trees and light displays. Santa of course will be there to ensure a piece of normality during these testing times.

The Norfolk Lights Express will start

operations from the 16th November operating with the same safety measures as the Santa trains.

Can-do recipes for food bank

A recipe book aimed at the growing numbers of Food Bank users has been published by the Slow Food group in Aylsham.

All the recipes are based on the contents of a typical food bank parcel – mainly nonperishable canned and dried foods – and are simple, easy to follow, to encourage those who receive food parcels to get the best out of their rations. Called Canny Cooking, the 24-page, fully illustrated handbook, compiled by SFA members was presented to Cromer Food Bank in September to give away to customers who are reluctant cooks but keen to try. Each recipe was tried and tested by at least three Slow Food members.

NEw STOCK

Tim Morton, Project Manager at Cromer and District Foodbank, said: “It’s a bright, simple to follow little book which gives a range of recipes to suit different tastes.

Ranges Now In! also offering Wet Rooms again.

Local MPs Jerome Mayhew (Broadland), and Duncan Baker (North Norfolk) attended the launch of the book at the Cromer warehouse.

With an initial order of 100 copies, Cromer is now planning to distribute an extra 500 copies across all its centres in North Norfolk. The book will also go on sale via the group’s website at £5 + pp, all profits going to the Trussell Trust.

Residents in Norfolk are being reminded that they are the most important link in the Test and Trace system The steps to take if you or any member of your household display Covid 19 symptoms are simple and can be key in preventing infections being spread.

we all play our part to protect everyone around us. We all have friends and family that we want to keep safe – whether that’s parents, elderly grandparents, and even our children. And we need everyone to play their part to help us do that. We all have to work together to keep each other safe.

If you are symptomatic you must isolate as soon as you notice symptoms and to have no face to face contact with anyone outside of your household. It is important to do this straight away, and for everyone in the household to isolate as they could also be infectious even without symptoms.

Cath Byford, Chief Nurse with NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Our call to everyone is, if you have coronavirus symptoms then self-isolate, get a test and help us track down people you have been in contact with. It’s one way that together we can beat this virus.

But Test and Trace isn’t only about symptomatic individuals: when a positive test result arrives, teams of contact tracers will search for everyone the Covid positive individual has been in recent contact with and will alert them.

Cllr Bill Borrett, Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “This isn’t just about protecting ourselves, but making sure

Local Outbreak Control Plan

A Norfolk Local Outbreak Control Plan has been launched under the strapline Protect Ourselves, Protect Others, Protect Norfolk to set out how the county will support the national NHS Test and Trace programme to prevent and contain the spread of coronavirus.

7 Church Street Cromer NR27 9ER info@brightsideelectrical.co.uk

The plan sets out how Norfolk’s Public Health will work with a range of County Council departments and community partners to prevent local outbreaks in the first place. However, if outbreaks do occur, the plan sets out how they will be tracked in specific work places, settings, and communities and managed to limit further transmission. Also detailed is how Norfolk residents can find further guidance and support.

Prevention is key, and with further restrictions having been lifted, measures such as hand washing, social distancing in public places, and encouraging people to access testing immediately if they are unwell, are more important than ever.

Rule of Law

by Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

The Rule of Law in relation to the Brexit negotiations is much in the news currently. At least it makes a change from the pandemic.

In England we do not have a written constitution: nor should we. The closest thing we have is the Rule of Law. It may sound like a computer game or the title of an airport novel, but it is ancient. Lawyers and others can get emotional about it. To some it has become emblematic of what makes English law great. Its origins are ancient and found in many societies and philosophies worldwide.

The Rule of Law is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as: "The authority and influence of law in society, especially when viewed as a constraint on individual and institutional behaviour; (hence) the principle whereby all members of a society (including those in government) are considered equally subject to publicly disclosed legal codes and processes."

The Rule of Law means that Law is supreme and is above every individual. The Rule of Law is a system to protect citizens against their Government, so as to ensure it does not treat them unfairly, or arbitrarily deprive

them of their rights. It has evolved into being viewed by the liberal young as synonymous with human rights.

As a rookie law student in the 1980s we all had the sturdy orange book on Constitutional Law on our shelves. The first edition was written in 1885 by British jurist A. V. Dicey. It was not a fun read but had weightiness and determination about it which made us feel that what we were studying really mattered. Dicey coined the expression ‘The Rule of Law’ but did not invent the idea lying behind it.

In England, the Rule of Law is a longstanding principle of the way the country is governed, dating from Magna Carta in 1215 and the Bill of Rights 1689. The 19th century, brought the twin pillars of the British constitution which are the rule of law and parliamentary sovereignty.

Thomas Bingham, successively Master of the Rolls, Lord Chief Justice and Senior Law Lord of the United Kingdom, and the only person to hold all three offices, wrote ‘The Rule of Law’, published in 2008, 6 months before he died. It was chosen as ‘book of the year’ by several eminent people across the political spectrum.

Bingham said he first chose the title as a subject for a lecture he was asked to give some years before, as he was not sure he knew what it meant. He also said that those who used the expression did not know either, or did not mean the same thing. Following the lecture, The Guardian newspaper media described Lord Bingham as ‘the most revolutionary man in Britain’.

The Rule of Law has come to mean an amalgam of human rights and civil liberties, on the one hand, and security against a terrorist attack, on the other. It is a good thing, but the meaning is different and tailored (and twisted) to suit the purposes of those that use it.

Inspector Sally Hammerton from Joint Protective Services said: "We are very pleased to welcome both Remus and Milo into the police family. We are looking forward to watching them grow within the force as they eventually progress into drugs, weapons and cash specialist search dogs. Whilst we love seeing our furry friends develop specialist skills through training, we must remember those who have already dedicated their lives to the force. We sadly lost PD Claude earlier this year, after he had been suffering with a number of health problems. Claude was an exceptional dog and will be fondly remembered by all handlers in the section, as well as those officers and staff who had the pleasure of meeting him.”

people already waiting to give them a home. If you are looking for a kitten, please ring Stephanie to advise your preferences and get on the list to wait for next ones to become available.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

If you have been looking on our website recently to find a new cat or kitten to join your family, you may have been disappointed as the website has advised that no cats are available.

Sal, the little cat who had been in an RTA, that I mentioned earlier, came into care because her previous owners could not afford to pay for the surgery she needed so signed her over to their vets. When this occurs, the veterinary practices contact local charities to try and find someone who will take the cat in. It is important for all animal owners, not just cat owners, to be aware that if their beloved pet does have an accident, they need to have either, insurance to cover the cost of an operation, or have money available to pay for it to be done.

With regard to adult cats, there are some in care at present but we do not put them on the website until they have been to the vets for a check, plus vaccination, microchip and/ or neutering (if appropriate). In recent weeks we have people who have already been in contact with us, ready and happy to give the cats a new home. Cats like Benji, Buddy, Jaxon and Dave, all waiting for their check and vaccinations, or dear little Sal, at present on cage rest because she had to have a leg amputated as a result of an RTA. Penfold and Percy also need veterinary care for minor health problems which need to be addressed before they are given a clean bill of health and put on the website. Also, the lovely stray unneutered tom who arrived recently, but cannot be offered for adoption straight away as we need to make sure he is not someone’s cat before he goes to the vets for treatment. So, although you cannot see a photo of any of these cats on the website, we are happy for people to come and see if they fit their lifestyle and reserve them ready to go to their new homes once everything has been done that needs to be done. Dorah, Jasper, Roxy, Ronnie, Iris and Rosemary are all recent additions to our pens who left without going on the website.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. You can find us on Facebook: Cats Protection North Walsham.

Working with the DWP, NNDC is now seeking initial interest from North Norfolk based businesses who can identify one or more work placements to help young people to make a start in their working life.

NNDC Kickstart Scheme

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has welcomed the Government’s new Kickstart Scheme which will provide funding for the creation of job opportunities for 16 to 24 year olds; the age group identified as most at risk of long-term unemployment as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic.

The Government will reimburse salary costs and provide a cash amount to cover the other costs of employing a new member of staff. The DWP has set a minimum of 30 placements per organisation. This many placements would not be possible for most organisations in North Norfolk, so NNDC has applied to become a ‘Gateway’ organisation, managing a cohort of placements from partner organisations.

Funding is available for 100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week, plus associated employer National Insurance contributions and employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions. In addition, £1,500 per job placement will be provided for set up costs, equipment, support and training.

Still n Ope

How do I get involved with the NNDC Gateway? Businesses can register to join the NNDC Gateway via our Expression of Interest form. If we receive enough enquiries, we can make a joint application to provide the minimum number of placements. NNDC will require job descriptions which will be sent to the DWP and distributed to the local work coaches. The work coaches will work with young people to support them to apply for the post that you have created. All organisations wishing to offer one or more placement(s) will be able to interview candidates.

What do you give a 380-year-old for Christmas?

Trio of movies in memory of film fan Julian

Itteringham Village Shop has a long history of serving the local community, in fact it has outlasted 16 monarchs, a civil war and two world wars. There has been a shop trading from the same site for over 380 years and from 1994 has been run by members of the local community keen to ensure continuing success. The community Shop responds to the needs of customers placing an emphasis on local produce, most importantly it acts as a social hub.

A short film season is being staged at Sheringham Little Theatre next month in memory of one its staunchest supporters.

Julian High (pictured), who died aged 78 last year in November, was a regular at the venue for more than 60 years –as an amateur actor, drama supporter, filmgoer and a raconteur regaling friends in the coffee bar with anecdotes delivered in his trademark deep gravy-rich voice.

Through the 20th Century the Fairhead family ran the Shop, firstly Albert from 1910 and then his son Brian from the 1940s up to his death in 1994. Stocking a wide and varied range of items from groceries to wellington boots they were always aware of their customer’s needs. This has been an important factor this year in deciding the type of stock needed locally as we approach Christmas.

Julian High Photo: SLT

A trio of his favourite films – West Side Story, Out of Africa, and Carousel - have been lined up for a special tribute week in November.

His partner for 45 years Tom Dick said: “I am delighted to see these films being screened. Julian has been a life-long lover of film, from the days when he visited the Holt Regal three times a week in the 1940s and 50s.

“These were his top three – West Side story regarded by many as the best ever filmed musical, Out of Africa because he was emotionally moved to tears and claimed he never ever saw the last 10 minutes, and Carousel because he appeared in a Norwich amateur production of it as a 19-year-old, in a non-singing role as The Star Maker’. They are marvellous films and I am sure other people will enjoy re-seeing them too, said Tom, who shared a home in Holt with Julian.

So, it’s really a case of what can a 380-year-old give you for Christmas! This year the Community Shop rose to the challenge of Covid19 lockdown restrictions by delivering supplies to customers who were self-isolating or shielding operating on reduced opening hours. It was soon apparent that by taking safety measures early to protect both staff and customers the shop was becoming a popular destination for items not easily obtained in larger supermarkets. This is why this Christmas they have taken steps to stock a larger range of seasonal gifts from local artists and suppliers so customers can avoid the worry of trips into crowded shopping areas.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “Julian is greatly missed at the Little Theatre. He was a fantastic volunteer and supporter but mostly he was a friend. We miss him and his jokes!

The shop has many gift ideas including art cards, gift wrap, tea towels, candles, soaps, mohair socks, advent calendars, chutneys, cordials, and a whole lot more. The photograph taken inside the shop shows a few seasonal gifts displayed on and around items used by previous shopkeeper Brian Fairhead including his old typewriter that typed out customer accounts and orders. Open seven days a week from 09:00 – 4:00pm

The screenings are: Tuesday November 17 (7.30) - West Side Story Thursday November 19 (7.30) - Out of Africa Sunday November 22 (2.30) - Carousel Tickets are ÂŁ8 each (or if seeing all three the third is ÂŁ5) from www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Openwide Coastal and Nigel Hogg Productions join forces to support struggling artists

Openwide Coastal Ltd, operators and custodians of Cromer Pier and Pavilion Theatre and producers of the Cromer Show have donated the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre on a ‘not for profit’ basis to Nigel Hogg Productions to help support variety artists left unable to work and earn an income through the Covid crisis. This generous gesture is allowing the artists to continue to keep the spirit of entertainment alive and is providing the acts with some income during these difficult times.

The theatre staged a summer show and took measures to ensure that they were Covid-secure, with audience numbers restricted to significantly below the 500 seat capacity of the venue. Whilst the reduced audience capacity makes it impossible to stage the usual Cromer Christmas show, Openwide Coastal Ltd and Nigel Hogg Productions, in association with North Norfolk District Council, are providing a venue and stage for variety acts to showcase their talents to try and support them through this difficult crisis. The artists then split the take from box office receipts to generate a small amount of income from

each performance.

Nigel and his team have created a Christmas programme of entertainment called ‘Strictly Christmas’ which is a 90 minute variety show with a Christmassy theme and encompasses a mix of entertainment including 3 regular acts;

Olly Day, Rob McVeigh the singer and a brilliant magic act called Amethyst. There will also be a different guest act at each performance. The first performance is on Friday 4th December and shows will run through until 1st January 2021

The 90-minute show has been accredited with a ‘We’re Good to Go’ stamp of approval by Visit England and North Norfolk District Council is also supporting the venture which will continue the tradition of keeping variety alive this Christmas at the end of the pier in Cromer.

Nigel Hogg said: “We were absolutely thrilled with the support that we had

Openwide Coastal receives lifeline from Arts Council England Culture Recovery Fund

Openwide Coastal Ltd, proud custodians and operators of Cromer Pier and Pavilion Theatre on behalf of North Norfolk District Council and the producers of the world famous Cromer Pier Show for the last 19 years, are delighted with the news from Arts Council England that they have been awarded a grant from the Culture Recovery Fund.

for our Summer shows with most shows selling out at the reduced capacity of 100! The performers were delighted to be back on stage doing what they love most and being able to earn a small amount of money so we are really excited to be able to get them back on stage for Christmas! We really would encourage everyone to help us save the arts by booking a ticket to enjoy a safe, fun night out and let us bring some Christmas magic cack to Cromer Pier!”

Face coverings must be worn during the show. Tickets are £15 for adults or £7.50 for children under 16. Booking is for unallocated seating, and audience members will be seated by the ushers in their social bubbles. Any unsold tickets will be available at the door. Ticket collection is only from the pop-up box office in the Pavilion Bar, no postage option is available.

For more information, show times and to book a ticket visit www.cromerpier.co.uk

With reduced audience capacities and government restrictions during the pandemic, it has been impossible to stage the usual Cromer Summer and Christmas shows this year. This grant will help the theatre survive and re-open next summer.

Rory Holburn, Director at Openwide Coastal commented, “This has been an extremely difficult time for us but this grant will help by covering some of the losses we have already incurred and will incur from being closed this year. It also assists in ensuring the team we still have on payroll can now remain in place to enable us to re-open next summer without losing any of their knowledge and expertise that help make the show such a renowned success.”

“The Pier and Pavilion Theatre are also cornerstones of the local Tourism economy so we are delighted that we will be able to also help provide a much needed boost next spring as all businesses attempt to recover from the damage the pandemic has done.”

Rory concluded, “This really will help the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre survive the next 6 months and assist as we try to re-build the business over the next few years with our partners at NNDC. We would really like to thank both the department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport and the Arts Council for making this money available and recognising the importance of this national treasure to the cultural landscape.”

Openwide Coastal is looking forward to keeping the spirit of entertainment alive in the local community and it is wonderful to see the only full season end of pier variety show in the world will be back with us next year, pandemic allowing. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

Anaesthetising Pets

At Toll Barn Vets we are honoured to be trusted with loved family pets when they need surgical procedures both in routine and life-threatening situations. When a pet needs an anaesthetic this is understandably a very worrying time for both pet and owner, especially when it is an emergency or a life threatening situation, and we know that understanding what is happening to your pet is really important.

Every veterinary practice is different and has different protocols and procedures for anaesthetics but at Toll Barn Vets we work to a well-established procedure. So what exactly do we consider when your pet needs an anaesthetic?

Firstly we consider the species as many different injectable and gaseous anaesthetic drugs exist. Importantly, different species (and sometimes even different breeds within the same species) respond differently to the each drug and therefore species and breed play an important role in our choice of the right drugs to use to keep your pets as safe as possible. Seeing so many different species and breeds means we have a wide choice available to us, including Sevoflurane, a special gas anaesthetic often used in human paediatric surgery so we are able to choose the very best option for your pet.

Secondly, we perform a detailed pre-anaesthetic check. During this we check heart rate, temperature and breathing rate. We also check for underlying health issues that might affect the

anaesthetic choice. Much like in human hospitals we use this information to produce an ASA Score (an objective measure of the patient’s health and fitness for surgery). This helps us to predict and avoid, or specifically manage, any potential complications during or after the anaesthetic.

Next, our team consider the patients stress levels. Our purpose built separate dog, cat and exotic pet hospital wards along with our calming diffusers and music systems, aim to keep pets calm but by assessing stress or anxiety levels in advance we can make sure pets receive appropriate pre-medication to keep them nice and calm, and avoid any changes that might impact the anaesthetic. When booking admission appointments, we also try to book a later appointment for particularly nervous or anxious pets as this reduces their waiting time.

What about the anaesthetic itself? We hope there is never an anaesthetic complication but we also know it is incredibly important to be prepared just in case. Our Team run regular in house “Anaesthetic Emergency Simulations to make sure that we are all ready to leap into action should the need arise. One of the key things in an emergency is being able to administer medication into a vein quickly which is why all our patients undergoing anaesthesia have intravenous catheters fitted. This also helps us to administer intravenous fluids to help keep their blood pressure stable. Our team use a full range of specialised multiparameter machines which accurately measure blood pressure,

oxygen and carbon dioxide saturations, temperature, ECG, heart rate, breathing rate and breathing efficiency on patients ranging from the tiniest lizard or bird up to the largest dogs. Of course, all this monitoring is only as good as the person using the equipment! We are very proud to only use qualified veterinary nurses rather than lay staff for all our anaesthetics, and this helps us detect and act on any changes that may occur, helping us to keep your pet as safe as possible.

Following the anaesthetic, patients are recovered in our heated hospital wards where a qualified hospital nurse makes sure they are comfortable by performing regular “pain scores, as well as making sure they have as many home comforts as possible to make their stay comfortable.

Obviously this is a very brief summary of what is involved with anaesthetising your pet, so please give us a call on 01692 407126 if you would like to discuss your individual pets procedure.

CRAB EGGS BENEDICT

Pizza to go at the Grove - Although winter is nearly here it’s still possible to experience a taste of the summer in Cromer.

The Grove launched their handmade stone baked pizzas on the lawns during the peak season to huge acclaim, full houses and long waiting lists as visitors and local residents enjoyed a new venture for the town under festoon lights and real fire burners. And now the family-run business is offering Cromer folk the chance to keep sampling their delicious pizzas with a takeaway service starting from November 1st. Head chef Reis Khalil said: “Our pizza menu was a huge success in the summer, and we’ve invested a fair amount to get a really good product. There’s a lot

of variety on the menu, from a classic tomato and mozzarella to a Gressingham duck special, and of course we can cater for specific dietary requirements too. Ever since we’ve started it’s sat beautifully alongside our two Rosette a la carte menu, but even in the summer we had lots of calls enquiring about takeaway pizzas so we’ve decided to take the plunge and offer them for the rest of the year.” Menus can be found at www.thegrovecromer.co.uk/restaurant We’re still serving food every evening from 5pm, plus beautiful afternoon tea each day and pizza to take away from 1st November. 01263 512412 for more information.

Crab Eggs Benedict We all know that the largest chalk reef in Europe lurks off the coast of Cromer and provides the most incredibly succulent crab and lobster which features on many a menu across the whole of the UK (in fact we saw Cromer Crab starring at Grand Central Station’s oyster bar in New York

Whilst everyone is in favour of conservation it would be great to think that there is room for a happy medium in this case, allowing fishermen to fish and crabs to thrive. Rest assured we will continue to have this fantastic food on our menus, with this superb Crab Eggs Benedict to start a huge hit in the summer especially. Crab Eggs Benedict 1 crab 1 tsp of coriander chopped 1 spring onion chopped finely 1tblsp mayonnaise Pinch of salt and pepper

Mix well in a ceramic bowl with a fork Place the mixture on half a toasted English muffin Balance a poached egg on the crab mix Pour three tablespoons of Hollandaise sauce over and garnish with chopped chives.

and if it’s a little imperfect, well that just proves you made it! The point is the taste and the love and effort you poured into it.

Autumn Bake Off!

It’s the ‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ according to Keats, and what better time to dust off your baking equipment and make a little treat for the weekend. If you are going to treat yourself, (or someone else) do it in style and go for quality rather than quantity. A really sumptuous and fresh homemade cake is a wonderful treat and appreciated by all; it’s a rare person who can say no to a squishy, moist and wholesome homemade cake, baked with care and love and a bit of individual flair. Sure, it may not look like every other cake, but that’s kind of the point. You don’t want to churn out something that looks like Mr Kipling, you want a bit of individuality, 6 oz soft brown sugar 6 oz Butter 8 oz SR Flour 2 oz Ground Almonds 2 tsp Cinnamon 1 hpd tsp Nutmeg 1 ½ tsp Baking Powder 3 Eggs

in the early 2000s). But this tradition may be under threat with authorities threatening a dramatic reduction in fishing, or alternative methods to the traditional crab pots used by the local fishermen for centuries.

Autumn is surely the perfect time for gorgeous indulgent cakes....as if we really needed an excuse for one. And we can convince ourselves that we are being a tiny bit healthy by the addition of carrots in this one. This lovely moist cake is a real crowd pleaser; a fabulous mixture of spice, sweetness, fruit and gooey frosting, it’s the perfect way to round off an Autumn celebration.

3 Tblsp Milk 4 oz Sultanas 6 oz Grated Carrot

FROSTED CARROT AND NUTMEG CAKE FOR FROSTING: 2 oz butter, room temperature 3 oz full-fat cream cheese Orange zest 4 oz icing sugar, sifted Cream sugar and butter. Sift all dry ingredients together into a separate bowl. Whisk eggs and milk together and add flour and egg mixture alternately into the butter, until all incorporated. Stir in fruit and carrot. Place into greased and floured deep square 9 inch baking tin, and cook on 180 for approx 30 – 40 mins, or until skewer comes out clean. Transfer to wire rack to cool. Meanwhile, make frosting as follows: Cream butter until pale, stir in cream cheese and essence, and gradually add icing sugar. Top cake with the frosting, adding some orange zest for decoration. Sheringham and Cromer Lions Club

We are back up and running ‘after a fashion’ with social distancing, masks, etc. and would like to tell you all that on Wednesday 7th October our Treasurer, Anton and this year’s President, Derick, are presenting a cheque for ÂŁ1,500 to Big C in Sheringham to help them funding cures for Cancer.

NORTH NOR TH NORF NORFOLK OLK REMO REMOVALS VALS A AND ST STORAGE ORAGE LTD LTD : 01692 016 500 501

On 6th September we organised the car park for Lord and Lady Walpole at their annual Charity Fundraising Day at Mannington Hall and raised an extremely healthy £198.20 with our usual Tombola. I must say that this year’s Charity Day was very well organised and attended and helped three local churches in the area.

We have also collected 3,096 pairs of glasses locally and they are going to Chichester Lions Club on Thursday 8th October. These glasses will be used to help people in Third World countries who need to wear spectacles. Thanks are due to those who donated their old spectacles to the collection points in North Walsham, Cromer and Sheringham.

We have also sent a cheque for £350 to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital Charity to pay part of the cost of a large mural on the wall of the Jenny Lind Hospital’s Parents Room. Photos of the mural look lovely and we hope worried or bereaved parents will be helped to cope by looking at the sun shining through the woods. This mural was needed as the room has no windows and it is now a cosy, welcoming place.

Do stay well everyone. We are still looking for more members. We are pleased to say that Janet Taylor has re-joined us after the death of her husband, and our former Treasurer, a few months ago. Liz and Derick Bowler

Cost effective, cutting edge laser and skin treatments and treatment combinations are available at the Coltishall Clinic

We realise that this year has been tough for most people and we are offering special pricing for the winter season on some of our treatment packages and combinations.

Coltishall Clinic is well known for offering effective cutting edge laser, skin and vein care treatments and have patients travel from all over the world for such treatments and results. One of our unique serving proposition [USP] is that we offer a full range of services under one roof. We firmly believe in the importance of a full ‘tool-box’ so that we can offer customized bespoke treatments to our patients. Patients are often pleasantly surprised when they think surgery is the only answer to their problems but it turns out that a much better option for them is non-surgical! This is the beauty of coming to a clinic like ours where we are very fortunate to work with a full range of laser and light devices, non surgical, minimally invasive and surgical options.

Only a well-equipped clinic with experience can offer you such a well-rounded package.

So here are some popular treatment packages and combinations on offer for you. Please do check the website for latest information before calling to book!

We have invested in top of the range comprehensive technology and have the experience of using it effectively. We have designed these packages for reversing age related changes in one appointment. A kind of mini extreme makeover! We have various packages on offer including Liquid facelift, neck and hand treatment packages.

No. 284, the second in the current solving competition and, as it happens, the same vintage as No. 283, has a nice key (again, no threat) with three variations following the moves of the black B which show a similar theme in one respect. The construction is beautiful, the white pieces on b4 and d4 serving to limit the moves of the dark-square Bs without the need for extra force. Difficulty 3.

Oh yes it will!

Live panto WILL happen at Sheringham and Great Yarmouth - with thousands of children joining in online too.

A pioneering project is beating the pandemic to keep panto alive in two seaside theatres and scores of Norfolk primary schools.

The scheme will see live performances of a festive fun show at Sheringham Little Theatre, and St George’s Theatre in Great Yarmouth along with a special online screening into children’s classrooms and homes.

The school’s screenings are happening thanks to the Norfolk Music Hub, which promotes music-making among local children, and was seeking to team up with a panto, which are in short supply this year.

Earnshaw.

The live stage shows clint_brown_1@hotmail.com – which are 50 minan audience of invited youngsters at St utes long without an interval – will be at Sheringham Little Theatre on December 22, 23 George’s Theatre Great Yarmouth , whose cabaret-style seating allows for more space and and 24. 76 guests in the 220-seater auditorium during Covid restrictions. Sheringham can host 40 people in its 160 seats under current rules.

C

The sessions will be run by the Come and Sing Company on behalf of the Arts Council-funded Norfolk Music Hub.

During the live screening, which will be captioned and signed, youngsters will be encouraged to get into the festive spirit by dressing up as their favourite panto character, and to post pictures on social media. It will take place at 1.45pm on Wednesday December 16 with a warm up session from 1.30pm.

Debbie Thompson, director of both theatres, said: “We have done lots of work with the Music Hub, and when I heard they were looking for a panto I said ‘look no further.’ We have been looking for ways to stage a shortened, socially-distanced panto with a small cast at both venues to reduce the cost risk – and this link-up with the Hub adds an extra dimension to ensure youngsters do not miss out on their annual dose of pantomime. In true panto style it’s a real happy ending for all concerned, even before curtain up!”

Tickets to Rapunzel – The Lockdown Panto – are £12 (£8 u-16s) at Sheringham and £10 (£6 u-16s) at Great Yarmouth available via www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com or Loraine Metcalfe who will play the sorceress, seen www.stgeorgestheatre.com in previous panto baddie mode. Photo: Richard Batson/SLT Schools wanting to find out more about the Rapunzel – The Lockdown Panto is being online streaming should visit The Norfolk The live streaming will take place on written and directed by Sheringham Little Music Hub website December 16, filmed with a live band and Theatre panto and summer season regular Nick www.norfolkmusichub.org.uk

Clapham & Collinge Solicitors Rank Among Top UK Law Firms in The Legal 500 2021

At Clapham & Collinge Solicitors, we are delighted to be recognised in a record-breaking 13 practice areas, with two elite 'Leading Individuals', two 'Rising Stars' and fifteen recommended lawyers in the Legal 500 United Kingdom 2021 edition. Lin Whitehead, Partner and Head of Wills Trusts and Probate Department and Neale Grearson, Partner and Head of Family and Charities Department were both awarded ‘Leading Individuals’. Head of Employment Department Nicola Strefford and Wills, Trusts and Probate Solicitor Lauren Abbs were both awarded ‘Rising Stars’. Clapham & Collinge testimonials included:

'The firm has dynamic and well-coordinated teams who are passionate at doing the best possible jobs for their clients.'

'Client-focused and extremely competent, the firm provides full, comprehensive and sensible advice given to every client.'

'A very competent and capable firm, with the particular skills set needed to deal with older clients. Unlike some firms, each client is treated as important, and not just a number.'

Mark Kermez, Managing Partner at Clapham & Collinge said: ''Once again a fantastic result! This is testament to the hard work and dedication of our lawyers; and fantastic news after several months of challenging trading conditions. We're proud to be recognised as

a leading regional law firm with a recordbreaking number of recommended lawyers across the firm.''

Just like many other businesses, it’s been a challenging few months for Clapham & Collinge as we address the issues presented by the coronavirus pandemic and adapt to the new environment. Despite the obvious interruptions and challenges faced by the firm, we’d also like to take this opportunity to announce that we have maintained our plans for the ‘progression framework’ that was introduced to staff members at Clapham & Collinge last year. This framework offers a ‘pathway to partnership’ for the firm’s top performing individuals who meet the qualifying criteria including length of service, commercial acumen and leadership.

Congratulations to Caroline Eaton (Family Solicitor), Erin Southgate (Conveyancer), Jamie Pearson (IT Manager), Lauren Abbs (Wills, Trusts and Probate Solicitor), Louis Hilldrup-Boorman (Marketing Manager) and Nicola Strefford (Head of Employment Law) who have recently been promoted to Associate.

Mark Kermez said ‘‘We are an incredibly ambitious firm and despite these uncertain times, we remain focused on developing our legal service offering. The success of this business is down to a number of things, but

one factor stands out head and shoulders above the rest; our people. It is the talented, enthusiastic, committed and motivated people that make this business what it is. It is those same people, and the many more who will join us in the years ahead, who share our vision and will drive this firm on to become the finest it can be. Congratulations to those who have been promoted to Associate and thank you for your hard work and commitment.’’

Loada Ol’ Squit

Lockdown book raising funds for Action for Children Retired deaconess Brenda Hayes found herself at a bit of a loss at the beginning of lockdown so decided to start writing a series of Norfolk dialect verses and posting them on Facebook. They proved so popular she has now published a collection of poems in the form of a booklet and is selling them to raise money for Action for children. She describes herself as a ‘true Norfolk Mawther’ who grew up in Sheringham, later trained as a Wesley Deaconess and served communities in Plymouth, Brixton and Norfolk. She has now retired to Sheringham. She has a great love of the Norfolk dialect and the characters she has come across over the years, so much so they have inspired this delightful book.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club News from the Club House ...

A small number of members continue to meet on Friday evenings, 7-10pm, at the club bar and we have been able to organise a COVID safe short mat bowls session on a Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. 12 members have taken up the offer of playing, just for fun and a social afternoon with friends. The heating has been upgraded in preparation for the winter months.

Some bowls clubs are continuing to be optimistic for the future and we have 5 friendly game bookings for next season already. Here’s hoping we can arrange more and enjoy the company of bowlers from other areas on our super green.
