Cromer Carnival’s Parade Collection
Donation buckets at Cromer Carnival’s Parade collected £2988.79. Tony Shipp, Chair of the Voluntary Entertainments Organisation which organises the Carnival, said “We are so grateful to everyone for their generosity during the Parade and elsewhere during the main Carnival week, and the two children’s events weeks. After the break since the last Carnival, we were so pleased with the atmosphere and attendance at all of the events, and it was a great success”. Tony also expressed his thanks to all of the volunteers and businesses that contributed to the events of the Carnival, and to the collection of the funds. The nominated charity which has benefitted from the collection is Norfolk Accident Rescue Service, better known as NARS, who have received £2000. NARS is made up of volunteer doctors, paramedics, nurses and other first responders who attend incidents in Norfolk to save patients’ lives alongside the emergency services. They have saved numerous lives since the Charity started in 1970. Phillip Balls, who presented the cheque on behalf of the Carnival to NARS said, “As someone who spent the most significant part of my own career working for the Ambulance Service, it was a pleasure for me to give NARS the funds and to recognise the work they are doing on behalf of our community across the County”.

The Strand Club
Our chairman welcomed 16 members and 2 visitors to the cream tea on 12th October, then told us some good news about the Jubilee tree that we have been trying to find permission to plant since March. After being passed from one council department after another, Jackie happened to mention to Lucy at the White Horse that we were looking for somewhere to plant a tree to commemorate 25 years of the Club, together with the wonderful 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. The silver birch is now to be found in the garden of the White Horse and will soon have a plaque for all to see. Plans for our Christmas Party on 14th December and our New Year’s Meal on 18th January were discussed before we tucked into a delicious cream tea provided by the White Horse. (We seem to do a fair amount of eating!!) This month on 9th November, Brian Hedge will be taking us down memory lane when he presents a talk entitled ‘The Way We Were’. Raffle prizes were won by Chris Wood, Tina Smith, Margaret Cody, Peggy Gardner and June Morris. Visitors and new members are always welcome at our 2pm meetings in the Barn at the White Horse where we charge £2 members and £3 visitors on the door. Ride Northrepps 2022
The 2nd of October saw the triumphant return of the Nothrepps Ride event. The weather was uncommonly pleasant for October and encouraged a grand day out for all participants. Turnout was high, with many returning for multiple circuits. There were 3 circular routes available for cyclists and riders. A Quite Lanes route of 5km, a Tracks and Country lanes route at 12km, and a longest country Lanes route at 20km. Bikes were available for hire on the day from Sea and Pine Bikes. The event was once again organised by Colin Phillips for the Northrepps Village Trust.

We often hear about the ‘hidden carers’, usually unpaid members of families supplementing or even taking on the full care of older people in order for them to remain living at home. Statistics show that 2/3 older people over the age of 65 have a partner living with them and this reduces to 1/3 when over 85 years. It is getting harder for older people especially to obtain the right amount of care to meet their needs for personal support but also to avoid loneliness and isolation. Age Concern North Norfolk has a day centre open 4 days per week but we are running below the numbers we could actually cater for. We are also providing over 550 meals per month to people who attend the day care or the Lunch club but also to people living in their own homes between Cromer and Holt. We have a great capacity and willingness to support as many people as possible this Chris winter to get through what is going to be a difficult time for us all. However, although we have qualified care staff, we still need the support of our volunteers to supplement our services in the day centre but particularly with the delivery of meals.

Local Ambulance Volunteers Receive Awards
On 7 October at Cromer Ambulance Station a presentation of awards was made to local community engagement volunteers Jonathan Rackham, David Russell and Nigel Pearce by North Norfolk MP Duncan Baker. Harriet Snowden the Ambulance Trust's Patient Experience Lead said: "We are celebrating the wonderful work our community engagement group volunteers across the region. We are glad that Duncan Baker MP was able to present the group the certificates and personally thank them for the hard work that they do for our patients in the East of England. The Community Engagement Group are proactive at supporting the Trust to share education, attend events and support fundraising for the Trust. They act as critical friends and representatives of our patients in their area. We are forever grateful for everything they do to support the Patient and Public Strategy". Duncan Baker added: "As an MP who is tirelessly working to improve ambulance response times, and championing our heroic paramedics and first responders, it was a great pleasure to help present two of the three marvellous constituents with their community engagement awards. Carols at the Theatre - At the time of Yule

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to be returning to Sheringham Little Theatre for this year’s Carols at the Theatre. At the time of Yule – Songs for the Festive Season will be on Sunday 11 December at 4:00 pm. New for 2021, and improved for 2022, our selection of carols proved popular last ear and will be a sure-fire hit this year. Whether your idea of Christmas music is Once in Royal David’s City, In the Bleak Midwinter or Bing Crosby there will be something for everyone in this concert. We will be featuring Christmas music old and new including several by female composers. The music will be interspersed with seasonal readings of prose and poetry. The choir will be directed by David Ballard and accompanied by Philip Adams. Audience participation will be an essential ingredient, as is leaving with a smile on your face! This is the Society’s 90th Anniversary season having been formed in 1933. The choir will mark its Emerald Anniversary in April 2023 with a concert celebrating the changes in choral music over the last 90 years. On 4 October we had, as usual, an excellent lunch at The Links Hotel in West Runton. Then we were privileged to hear Michael Gurney speak about some of his family history and about his role as High Sheriff of Norfolk in 2021-22. The Gurneys are a distinguished Norfolk family in their own right and Michael is the 13th Gurney to be High Sheriff of Norfolk since 1399! Moreover, Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845), prison reformer, was born a Gurney, and Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton (1786-1845; related to the Gurneys by marriage) had much to do with the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. The role of High Sheriff is unpaid and apolitical. This meant that Michael was able, from a neutral standpoint, to put various bodies in touch with each other and to make sure that things were working. This included being on a prison advisory board; supporting the victim and witness service; encouraging schemes to break the cycle of adverse childhood experiences which can lead to youth crime; working with schools and young people; visiting communities; and many other things-- including, in the process, driving thousands of miles within Norfolk! With two rounds of applause the club thanked Michael for his very interesting talk. On Tuesday 6 December, at our Christmas lunch, Dr Rob Knee will be our guest speaker on another well-known Norfolk family and on 10 January Jacqui Palmer will speak to us about the RNLI (Cromer). Meanwhile, we have room to welcome new members! If you would like to meet some of our current members and find out more about the club, please come along to our coffee morning on Tuesday 15th November. Although we are a men’s club, wives and partners or any other guests are also very welcome to attend from 10.30 at the Hole-in-One Sports Bar, West Runton (next to the Links Hotel). Ladies Circle Search for Lost Jewel A women’s club has made a comeback in a North Norfolk town after closing in 2009. Ladies Circle is a club for women aged 18-45 with the principles of fun, friendship and fundraising. The group will form on the 20th of October when the Circle’s National President, Fiona Bull will officially launch the club. Claire Cushing, Chair of North Walsham Ladies Circle, said: “We are all so excited! We have a fantastic team of ladies who have worked very hard to get us to this point and I am very much looking forward to the seeing our club grow and to meet many more new members. You don’t have to live in North Walsham to join, we welcome ladies from all over.” There is only one thing missing to complete the launch and that is the Chair’s Jewel, which the group have been unable to track down since the last club closed. The Jewel is an historical chain which contains the name badges of all previous Chair's names and dates back to 1964. Mrs Cushing said: “We have asked everyone we know that was connected to the old group, but we fear the Jewel is lost. It would be such a shame if we can’t find this piece of history and it would really mean a lot to both us and the previous members if we could find it.” Whilst Ladies Circle ends at age 45, the sister club Ladies Tangent welcomes members from the age of 45. Tracey Phipps, who will be the Club President for this year and is a Tangent member, said: “When I first moved to North Norfolk, I realised that there was a gap in social events for younger women and as I was a Ladies Circle
Member previously, I wanted to help set something up here. We have all had so much fun. It has been a privilege to work with such a brilliant committee and to meet lots of new friends.” The Ladies Circle have already attended lots of activities, including alpaca walking and archery, with many more activities planned.
Stephanie Lloyd, who is part of the fundraising team, said: “Being part of Ladies Circle is an absolute joy! We have a good mix of Ladies Circle Committee activities and sometimes we just meet for dinner. We know accommodating a large group of ladies can be a bit of handful, but we have had great support from local businesses.” The Orchard Gardens in North Walsham will support Ladies Circle’s next fundraising event on the 23rd of November, which is a Bingo Night to raise funds for the Rainbow Trust.

Annual Grants to Local Volunteer Groups Caring for their Communities
As part of supporting local volunteer groups engaged in caring for their communities and being mindful of the importance of keeping warm during the current energy crisis the Unite the Union LE 1880 Branch agreed to give substantial financial support to the following groups in Norfolk. The James Paget Ostomy Group, The Wymondham Dementia Support Group, Cromer Methodist Church Community Matters Cafe', Steven Newing House, Fakenham and Norfolk Accident Rescue Service. On 10 October Branch Executive Committee member David Russell presented Helen Barnwell Volunteer and Rev Colin Telfer with a cheque on behalf of the Branch. Colin Telfer said " We are always grateful for the friendship and support of the Unite LE 1880 Branch. The generous cheque to help us support those in our community with refreshments, food and friendship and warm space is very welcome as we prepare for an anticipated difficult season".

We have had a glorious summer but as winter approaches it becomes even more important to families living with dementia that they have somewhere to go for company, laughter and support and for those who are confined to their home, that someone from outside will come and provide similar company and stimulation while their carer has a break. Covid has dominated our lives, but dementia has remained as the daily reality throughout for many families and we continue to receive an increasing number of enquiries from both families and individuals seeking support. Holt & District Dementia Support has looked to meet that need through the provision of the Poppy Café every Monday and Tuesday morning plus Poppy PM on the 2nd and 4th Thursday afternoons of the month. Our Home Visiting service provides the same social support within the person’s own home and allows the carer some time to themselves. Our monthly support group for carers, Poppy Friends, provides an opportunity for carers to get to meet with others facing the same challenges, have a coffee and share experiences. Energy efficiency matters more to some home buyers these days than the size of the garden. According to a recent survey by Money.com, solar panels now rank ahead of ensuite bathrooms and, as energy prices rise, this trend looks set to continue. So, if you are selling your home, how can you make your house appeal to today’s energy efficient buyers? Fortunately, you can improve your home’s performance and make it easier to sell without spending a fortune.
Your EPC can help you
You will need a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) before marketing your home, and it will then be available to any potential buyer. The EPC is a short report, produced by an accredited energy assessor, on the energy efficiency of a property. It will rate your home A to G, with A being the most energy efficient grading. The EPC should also include recommendations to improve your home’s rating. An EPC lasts for ten years. So, your home may already have one. If you cannot find a copy, you can check on the website: www.gov.uk/find-energy-certificate.
Take care to consider the EPC’s recommendations before putting your home on
the market. It may reveal some straightforward ways to make your home more energy efficient. If you are commissioning a new EPC, you may want to increase your home’s energy efficiency first. There may be cost-effective ways of doing this, for example, by switching to LED bulbs or insulating your loft. You can find suggestions at Simple Energy Advice.
Having a higher EPC rating may be more important for some types of property, from 2025, the Government may require rental properties to have at least a C rating. So, if your property could appeal to buy-to-let investors, then you may want to bear this in mind. Currently a privately rented property must have a rating of no less than E.
Make sure you obtain all the necessary statutory consents
Most significant improvements, including solid or cavity wall insulation, double glazing, solar panels, or new boilers, all require building regulations consent. However, if the contractor installing them is authorised under the Competent Person Scheme, then all procedural matters will be dealt with as standard.
Other consents you may need
Every home is unique, and what works well for one property may be more difficult to implement in another. Some properties may not be suitable for cavity wall insulation due to solid walls or because the work may aggravate damp issues.
Upgrading to a new boiler, or installing double, or even triple, glazing could make your home more attractive to buyers concerned about rising energy costs.
Occasionally, there may be title restrictions which mean you need a third party’s consent. If you plan major work, such as installing solar panels, then you should check your property’s title for any restrictions first.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We are happy to report that Bear’s blood test was satisfactory and within 3 hours of being advised, his new family had come to collect him. He has settled in very well and his new family have told us that after seeing him they just wanted to offer him a home and that he was well worth waiting for. Jasper, one of our longer-term residents has also left us, and again his new family are delighted to have him join their household. As one of the older cats in care we are very happy to learn that he too has now found his forever home. Last time we also mentioned that we have several young cats who needed homes with experienced cat owners because they were timid and would need more time to adapt and settle. One of these was Sophie, a lovely grey and white girl, who joined us from an outside situation. Sophie has been in her new home for two weeks at the time of writing this. I have had a message from her new family which advises us that she has settled well, is eating well and gaining confidence daily. She does have a hidey hole where she goes if unsure of anything but has bonded with her new owner and loves being stroked by her. We are amazed that she has settled so quickly and are now hoping that some of the other cats will be as lucky as Sophie. We have cat traps which we are happy to lend to people, either to deal with feral colonies or to help return a cat that has lost its way to its family, and several are in use at present. We do ask that people return them as soon as possible as there is often someone else waiting to borrow them. One gentleman borrowed one to deal with some stray cats which he is happy to care for once neutered. He has kept us advised of progress and indicated he will be returning the trap once he and his wife have recovered from Covid. We are happy with this arrangement. Unlike the gentleman who borrowed a trap to catch his Bengal cat which had escaped and was living in Sainsburys Delivery area. Having caught
the cat the next day we are still waiting for him to return it. We live in hope but may have to contact Head Office regarding this! Missing since Sunday 11th September Lottie is a small black and white female cat last seen escaping into brambles/hedgerow in a field following a dog attack in Sidestrand NR27 near the junction with Topp Road/Hungry Hill. Despite searching day and night, the immediate area and further afield, she is still missing. She has been posted on local media sites, posters have been put up locally, leaflets distributed, and local vets informed. Lottie is chipped and has also been logged as ‘missing’. She is just over two years old and was adopted as a 10-week-old feral kitten along with her two sisters Bo and Ruthie, both of whom are pining for her. I am desperate to get her home safe and well. Please, please can I urge everyone to keep an extra look out and to search any gardens, sheds, garages, and outhouses. It is not known if or how badly she has been injured or if she is trapped somewhere. She is likely to be very scared and disorientated and possibly lost. Editor’s Recipe - Coconut Slices
Despite the current cost of living crisis and all of us having to tighten our belts, we also need a small treat every so often to lift the spirits. With this in mind, I have tried to select a recipe which uses ingredients which you probably already have in your cupboard and is quick and easy to do. It is an old WI recipe which I remember my mum making when I was a child and it always felt like a treat.
The recipe makes 24 slices and if you make it when you already have the oven on for something else, if not too costly to bake. You will need a 12” x 9” Swiss roll tin.
Ingredients.
225g self-raising flour Pinch of salt 120g softened butter 85g caster sugar ½ beaten egg 3 tablespoons jam (I use raspberry) 120g desiccated coconut 1 tablespoon milk

Pre heat your oven to 160C (or make when the oven is already on). In a medium mixing bowl mix the flour and

Anything with pie in the title just has to be good; who doesn’t love a great pie and mash dinner as the evenings draw in and the temperature goes down? Of course, you can go and buy one from the supermarket, but they really are the easiest things to make yourself, and with the availability of excellent ready rolled pastry also one of the quickest. This one requires no meat and can be adapted for vegans too if you use soya cream, which can be bought easily now and keeps for ages in the fridge, making it very user friendly.
It also tastes great and behaves exactly as dairy cream; I make a point of always having it in the house. Roasting veg before using it gives it a heightened flavour and sweetness, which works amazingly well in a pie, particularly the garlic; I promise you it is worth the extra work. It is

salt and 25g of the sugar, rub in the butter until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Add the beaten egg and a little cold water and bring together to a stiff paste. Wrap and chill in the fridge for 15 mins. Roll out the pastry on a floured board to fit the Swiss roll tin, not forgetting to bring it up sides. Spread the jam generously over the pastry base.
Mix together the coconut and remaining sugar and mix in the milk. Spread over the jam and press down lightly with the back is a spoon. Bake for 30 – 40 minutes, turning the tin so that it bakes evenly. Remove from the oven when golden brown and before the coconut burns. Leave to cool and cut into slices. Keeps well in an airtight tin. Enjoy! – Jo.

Roast Veg Pie
¼ celeriac, peeled and cut into small chunks 1 butternut squash, peeled and cut into chunks 6 garlic cloves, left whole and in the skins 1 large white onion, diced 1 leek, quartered lengthways and chopped Punnet mushrooms, quartered Dried thyme Veg stock and thickener such as Bisto Small carton double cream, or soya cream Pack ready rolled puff pastry
Method Start by tossing the celeriac, garlic cloves and butternut squash in a little olive oil, seasoning with salt and pepper and roasting in a pre-heated oven on 180° for approx. ½ hour, or until almost cooked through and slightly browned, then remove and set aside. Meanwhile, gently fry the onion and leek for 10 mins with a tsp dried thyme and add in the mushrooms, frying for a further 5 mins.
Add in enough stock to just cover the veg and stir well, bringing up to the boil. Sprinkle in your thickener until you have a good thick consistency and take off the heat. Stir in the cream, add in the celeriac and squash and squeeze the garlic out of the skins into the mix and stir, adjusting your seasoning to taste.
Place into a deep oven proof dish and cut the puff pastry out to cover the pie, pricking it a few times to let the air escape. Place into your preheated oven for approx. 30mins until the pastry is cooked through and golden and serve immediately. Carolyn Burn

Back by Popular Demand: Christmas Comedy at the Grove!
Christmas is always a time for good cheer, and now North Norfolk residents can gear up for the festive season with three nights of the finest comedy at the Grove in Cromer. Sundown – the Grove’s event space, in two giant tipis – will host the return of Christmas Comedy evenings on Thursday evenings in December. The nights debuted last Christmas and were a smash hit, with comedians from all over the country entertaining full houses with a laugh minute gags and side-splitting stories. Added to which were ‘loaded tables’, featuring Sundown’s unique tapas and pizza, and arrival drinks too.

The stamps of Iceland featured as the main display at the October meeting of the Society. Peter Boyce, of the Norfolk and Norwich Philatelic Society, joined us for the evening and gave a brief history of this country and of its political and philatelic history. Iceland became independent of Norway after WWW1 in 1918 and became a republic in 1944, issuing its first stamps in 1873. As pictorial stamps began to be issued, they reflected the scenery, flora and fauna, with particularly interesting bird stamps. Peter’s collection ended in the year 2000 and Iceland ceased to produce its own stamps in 2021. The second part of Peter’s display was of The Levant, a loose collection of Eastern Mediterranean countries, ruled over by many other countries over the years. This led to an interesting, but highly confusing, philatelic picture! Visitors are most welcome to attend the meetings, the next one being on November 14th – Quiz night. North Norfolk Photographic Society
North Norfolk Photographic Society held their first competition of the season on October 5th, with the theme "Home and Garden". As you might expect with such a creative group of people there was a wide range of image styles and the judge, Michael Lloyd, held back 28 images for a second look before coming to his decision. The entries included garden wildlife, interiors, creative multiple and long exposures, even an aerial view taken from a light aircraft. The 4 images awarded gold were: Glasses and Roses by Grace Glaister, Homely Reflections by Robbie Spencer, My Bedroom Chair by Diana Knight, Vase on a Shelf by Valerie Walker. It will have four en-suite bedrooms with a further two rooms for a sleep-in member of staff and a volunteer so that tenants have access to support during the night should they need it. Heritage Railway Prepares for Busy Christmas Season
The North Norfolk Railway is looking forward to a busy holiday season as it runs a varied programme of events including a range of ever-popular dining trains, across the autumn-winter season. The Railway’s ever popular Norfolk Lights Express return from 11 November, with passengers able to enjoy the beautiful North Norfolk countryside in a whole new light! Equipment mounted to the outside of each carriage shines onto the scenery in a series of changing colours, and 10 lit-up dioramas help tell an intriguing story brought to life by on-board narration and music. Stage Direct amateur drama group are about to perform their new play ‘The Female of the Species’ by Joanna Murry-Smith at Sheringham Little Theatre.
Following on from Stage Direct’s wonderful fundraising success for Sheringham Little Theatre earlier in June, with ‘One O’clock from the House’, they hope to continue their run of success with this, their third show this year at Sheringham Little Theatre, being performed on the 11th and 12th of November 2022. With new members joining their troupe, the audiences will get a chance to espy some new raw acting talent on stage.
‘Female of the Species’ was premiered in London’s West End in 2008. Joanna’s plays have been performed in Australia and worldwide. ‘Female Of the Species’ is a “deliciously wicked” play that "deftly” entices the viewer into the other realms of farce. Margot Mason, a pioneer of the 1970s Women's Liberation movement has won international adulation for her books on the subject but now, the aging author has hit writer's block. Struggling alone in her country house, she is surprised by a visitor, a student, idealist and daughter of one of Margo's most dedicated followers. Initially delighted, Margo's feelings soon change when her visitor produces handcuffs and a gun and proceeds to hold her prisoner. Get Protected and Get Vaccinated This Winter
More than 100,000 autumn COVID-19 vaccination boosters have been administered to people across Norfolk and Waveney. NHS Norfolk and Waveney’s campaign is off to a great start as thousands have come forward for their autumn booster jab. “Our colleagues have been working tirelessly to deliver the autumn booster programme, and we’re delighted to have given more than 100,000 vaccinations since we began vaccinating at the beginning of September,” said Kate Keeling, Head of Immunisation at NHS Norfolk and Waveney. “We continue to urge local people to take up the offer of the vaccine as soon as they are called forward. People who are eligible should book without delay when they are invited by the NHS either by booking through the NHS website or calling 119.” People aged 65+, carers and pregnant women can book an appointment to have their autumn booster at http://nhs.uk/covidvaccine or call 119 (as long as it’s been three months since their last dose). Please note that autumn boosters are via booked appointments only across our sites in Norfolk and Waveney. Around 26 million people across England will be eligible for an autumn booster in line with guidance set out by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). This includes: l residents in a care home for older adults and staff working in care homes for older adults l frontline health and social care workers l all adults aged 50 years and over l persons aged 5 to 49 years in a clinical risk group, as set out in the Green Book – this includes pregnant women l persons aged 5 to 49 years who are household contacts of people with immunosuppression
persons aged 16 to 49 years who are carers, as set out in the Green Book Some patients may be invited to have their vaccination at a local GP-led site. A number of pharmacies in the area will also offer the autumn booster to eligible patients. The programme will extend to other eligible groups through to December 2022. We would like to remind people who have made booked appointments to attend these on time and to arrive no more than five to ten minutes before your appointment. Wrap up well – As the weather is changing, please consider this before leaving. Please consider thin layers (with short sleeves as your base layer) are recommended. Council to Hold Cost of Living Summit with Local Organisations
The rising cost of living is a significant concern to those living in North Norfolk, with many this winter facing difficult financial decisions. North Norfolk District Council is holding a cost-of-living summit on Thursday 3 November, engaging with local organisations and stakeholders to assess the support options available and how to best help residents through hardships as a result of rising costs. Resident's survey The Council has also launched a resident’s survey, seeking views and feedback regarding the cost-of-living impact. The responses received will be analysed for discussion at the summit and shape the action plan. The aim of the summit and survey will be to increase the understanding of the cost-of-living impact across North Norfolk and promote awareness of and support for the various responses and programmes of assistance available in the District, particularly around the issues of food banks usage and energy bills. In attendance will be representatives from countywide and district public bodies, voluntary, charity and community organisations, including faith groups.
Norfolk Community Foundation – Surviving Winter Appeal
The Norfolk Community Foundation is running a public fundraising campaign for people to donate the rebate to their Surviving Winter campaign to help establish Community Hot-Spots. This year the Norfolk Community Foundation’s Surviving Winter campaign will be helping their charity and voluntary partners establish Community Hot-Spots.
These hot spots will provide a warm, inclusive environment for people to take a break from the cold, meet people in their communities and gain access to any support they may need to help them get through the upcoming winter months. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

The Norfolk Community Foundation also provides grants of £2,000 to contribute towards the cost of running or establishing a Community Hot-Spot, which can be applied for by charities, grassroots community groups or community organisations looking to provide a warm space for people in their community. Fundamental Change in the Law Results in More Divorces
The new procedure involves a divorce being applied for online through the Government Online Portal. What it does not do is to automatically give a process for dealing with financial arrangements arising from the divorce. This remains a crucial area. Likewise, the most important aspect of resolving any arguments over children may still need the involvement of a Court in resolving any disagreements between parents. It is to be hoped though that the new no-fault divorce law will help spouses and parents to work together more amicably and collaboratively. There is also the possibility under the new law of a joint application being made for a divorce whereas previously one spouse had to apply for a divorce against the other.
On 6 April 2022 the law surrounding divorces in England and Wales was changed radically. Before that a divorce could only take place based on one of five reasons and for an immediate divorce that could only be adultery or unreasonable behaviour.
This all changed in April. “No-fault” divorce came into operation in April. This enables a husband or a wife (or them jointly) to apply for their marriage to be brought to an end, but without having to give a reason. Under the old law it was often the case that behaviour was exaggerated to enable a divorce to take place, or marriages had to continue even where the spouses acknowledged that it was realistically over. No-fault divorce was intended to avoid arguments and animosity over an actual divorce, but the immediate result has been that, for the first three months following the new law coming into operation, substantially more divorces have been started than previously.
Between April and June 2022 a total of 33,566 divorce applications were made in England and Wales. The majority were made under the new legislation and from a sole application, i.e. not joint. This is the highest level since the beginning of 2012. Over the coming months and years we will need to see whether the no-fault divorce results in continued higher numbers of divorces. Also whether the long-term intention of more amicable divorces filters through to what happens when couples split up.
It has been suggested that there was a period before the new law came into operation where divorces were not started and that has resulted in the increase following the April change. There was a concern when the new law was being discussed as to whether it would make divorces too easy; so time will tell as to whether the increased number of divorces being started will continue or whether the first quarter statistics just show that there was what has been described as “pent up demand”.

What the new law does not do is to make dealing with finances or children any easier. However, it is hoped that taking away the animosity around an actual divorce itself will lead to a better attitude when dealing with fundamental long-term aspects such as finances and children are to be resolved. The emphasis with these areas remains on spouses and parents trying to reach agreement wherever possible. The Government has been trying to encourage mediation as an option giving “vouchers” to those willing to try mediation instead of more acrimonious and expensive Court Proceedings. Taking away arguments over whether a divorce should take place, and on what basis, will undoubtedly help in the correct tone being set between spouses that are splitting up and having a divorce, especially where children are concerned and involved.

After a summer of consultation during their free workshops, New Stages has created a new show based on the themes of friendship and kindness to inspire families and children to connect with their community and each other. The 45-minute show, designed for families and younger audiences, will be performed at North Walsham Pop Up People’s Theatre. It’s the new venue where New Stages take over the function room of the Black Swan, on Black Swan Loke, to convert it into a theatre space. Joseph Ballard, Director of New Stages said: “I hope that by presenting this show in the town centre, we can offer something fun for families to share together and make it easy to get to. I’m proud to offer completely free tickets as this will enable lots of people to access it at a time when we’re all feeling the pinch in a cost-of-living crisis.”

International Garden Photographer of the Year Exhibition Returns to Sheringham Park
The popular International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGPOTY) exhibition, the world's premier photography exhibition specialising in garden, plant, flower and botanical images, returns to the National Trust’s Sheringham Park this autumn, from now to Sunday 18 December. Located in the tranquil surroundings of the Bower Garden, over 40 stunning images celebrating gardens and plants from around the world will be on display on outdoor panels. The international nature of the exhibition sits well within the garden setting at Sheringham, which features plants from at least five continents. The IGPOTY exhibition 15 features categories such as abstract views, beautiful gardens, the world of fungi, and trees, woods and forests. The overall winner was Magdalena Wasiczek's image 'The Stardust', featuring a large white or cabbage white butterfly at rest on a flower head surrounded by raindrops resembling stardust. For the first time this year, the exhibition at Sheringham Park also includes selected higher placed winners from the new, dedicated 'Riverlands Photo Award' 2022. This special award invited people to encapsulate the importance and significance of rivers and streams to the wildlife and/or people that use and enjoy them. 1st place in the Riverlands category was awarded to Dick Hawkes for his photo of ‘Grey Wagtail Capturing Insects’ taken in Woodford Valley, Wiltshire, England, United Kingdom. Dick said, “Several times I came to stand, watching, fascinated by the skill of the grey wagtail catching insects in mid-flight at a hatchpool on the River Avon in Woodford Valley, Wiltshire. The recently cut weed was a haven for a variety of insects. It took several trips to capture this exact moment, showing insect in beak combined with swirling water in the background.” Rob Coleman, Senior Programming and Partnerships Officer for Felbrigg and Sheringham Park, was a judge for the Riverlands category and said of the winning image, “The judges particularly liked the composition of this shot – capturing the wagtail displaying typical behaviour with the dynamic background of the fast-running stream showing the perfect habitat for this charismatic bird. “We were impressed with the number of entries for this new, special category and the excellent Grey Wagtail Capturing Insects by Dick Hawkes standard of photographs, many of which featured National Trust places and landscapes.” The International Garden Photographer of the Year is a free exhibition, which is open at the National Trust’s Sheringham Park from Saturday 22 October to Sunday 18 December, dawn to dusk. News from the Club House
The green at Cromer Marrams BC is now closed for the winter but next season there will be club matches afternoons, evenings and weekends. So, there will be a game for you, at a time to suit and at a level of competitiveness to suit. Seven days a week you can also play a social ‘roll up’. The professionals have worked on the green, so backed up by our wonderful ‘green team’ we expect the playing conditions to again be amongst the best in Norfolk. The fixture secretary is already receiving requests to play from touring teams in 2023 and there are plans to possibly play even more league fixtures next season. The club AGM was attended by over 20 members. They heard the President/Chairman thank everyone for their efforts during the year. The treasurer reported healthy figures and the nominated officers were ratified by the meeting. It was agreed that subscriptions for next season would remain at £65 full membership, £30 for those who join after 31st July and £15 social membership. Members are looking forward to the Christmas events of coffee morning and party. If you are not sure you wish to be involved as a club member, then the green will be available again from mid-April for the public to play, as and when open. Contact the number below and turn up with smooth soled, flat shoes, borrow a set of bowls and play for 1 hour or 2. We are already looking forward to welcoming you next season. In the meantime, if you wish to play (very!) short mat bowls with lots of fun, drink and biscuits for only £1.50, come along to the clubhouse

Chess Master Shares Expertise with Library Chess Group
Aylsham Library Chess Group (ALCG) is aimed at adults who are interested in playing chess in a relaxed, not overly competitive, environment. ALCG meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of most months - from 10.00 to around 12.00. North Walsham Library Chess Group (NWLCG) is aimed at all ages (including children and senior citizens) and all chess abilities. NWLCG meets on Friday afternoons - from 4.00 to around 6.00. Both groups are free to attend.
