First patient treated in North Norfolk Macmillan Centre
The first patient to receive her cancer care at the new North Norfolk Macmillan Centre has told of a ‘wonderful environment for patients and staff’ that is closer to home and less crowded than the hospital she normally visits.
Jane Ducker, 65, from Aylsham, was the first patient to walk through the doors of the state-of-the-art cancer centre, where services including a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre and an Acute Oncology Service are opening gradually from this week.
She was coming in for the immunotherapy treatment she receives every three weeks as part of a long-term cancer management plan for renal cancer, taking her place in a treatment chair that, like all the furniture in the centre, had been tested for comfort by a group of patients and clinical staff.

First patient treated in North Norfolk Macmillan Centre Continued from front cover...
With five providing space to administer lifesaving cancer medication for up to 30 patients a day, plus a chair for the Acute Oncology Service which supports patients with cancer who have complications or symptoms related to their cancer or its treatment. This new facility means the days of lengthy round trips to Norwich are now behind Jane, and many like her.
Those in need of investigations, check-ups and minor operations are also now able to access the care they need closer to home, as three new clinic rooms and two minor procedure rooms make it possible to offer an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments annually.
Jane said: “The new unit is light and bright - what a wonderful environment for patients and staff. From the window, we can even see the birds and squirrels playing in the garden. I’ve been treated regularly for about four years and was able to transfer from Norwich to Cromer last year for my immunotherapy where I received treatment in the main Cromer building and now in this new centre. The Weybourne Unit at the N&N Hospital is marvellous but the whole Norwich site is so much busier and more difficult to get to from my home.
“I like being with other patients when I have my treatment as you can laugh with people and help the treatment along. Some might expect a cancer unit to be a sad place, but sharing experiences makes a difference and the treatment is less scary as a result.” The £4.85million project was designed by LSI Architects and completed in just over a year, with construction work continuing throughout last winter’s lockdown. Funding for the centre has been provided jointly by Macmillan Cancer Support, the Norfolk & Norwich Hospitals Charity, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Cromer Community and Hospital Friends.

Jane’s visit came ahead of Macmillan Cancer Support’s annual Coffee Morning on 24th September, which remains a crucial source of donations for services and projects funded by the charity. It has seen sign-ups drop more than three quarters below average for the second year running and is encouraging the public to host an event whenever and however suits them.

A Note from the editor
September 2021
Get your woolies out and fire up that central heating, the Autumn equinox has rolled by and there is a chill in the air. By the time you read this hopefully the rush for petrol will be over and we can relax and turn our thoughts to cosy evenings in front of the fire. Covid booster jabs are starting to roll out, don’t forget to get yourself protected for the Winter season. It is vital we remain cautious to avoid a further wave of infections. Bonfire night approaches and with talk of a shortage of domestic fireworks this year, why not take advantage of one of the organized public displays, safer for everyone and far more spectacular than anything at home. Also remember to keep your pets safe and quiet at home during the festivities. Whatever you are up to, enjoy your October magazine. Keep safe and well. Jo – Editor.
During our afternoon meeting on September 15th, members enjoyed a talk entitled Titanic Imposters. John Balls intrigued us with a fascinating combination of facts and figures about that fateful voyage which left Southampton on April 10th 1912, with 2,200 people. As he said, “All of life was here” and as we discovered, there were various reasons why they were travelling on The Titanic, proclaimed as unsinkable.
Alongside the majority of pleasure seekers, was a sprinkling of professional gamblers, imposters and lovers seasoning this mix of humanity. A few were professional gamblers who singled out those they deemed gullible, and thinking they had more money than sense, fleeced them as they cheated them ruthlessly at poker and other card games.
There were also some who were travelling under assumed names, again, for their own shady reasons, perhaps thing to put clear water between themselves and another, to whom they owed large amounts of money.
Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines. Month Copy deadline Publishing date November Tuesday 26th October Friday 5th November December Tuesday 30th November Friday 10th December January Tuesday 4th January Friday 14th January
Others were on board for another range of emotional reasons, loosely classified by our speaker as lovers. Some were, they hoped escaping the clutches of a legal partner in matrimony, doubtless starry eyed at the prospect of calmer waters ahead… Little did they know of the impending tragedy which would engulf them on April 14th. Amongst these, were probably real – life versions of Jack and Rose, the fatecursed couple who starred in the blockbuster movie Titanic. As we discovered, many were hiding a dark secret of some sort, and for some, it was not a happy ending. Our speaker sprinkled some fascinating but less known facts into his talk, saying everybody had their own story.
was only in its infancy. One thing, however, remains constant our enduring fascination with the real Titanic story, which could be described as a type of morality play.
At least 34 people travelled under assumed names. One Ellen Mary Walker was born during the voyage and died aged 94. One unscrupulous male hastily dressed in women’s clothing enabling him to board a lifeboat earlier. Several survivors would, in later years, take their own lives. Actual statistics are somewhat hazy as documentation at the time
The business part of the meeting followed but thought by most to be a little less interesting than the talk by John Balls.
Our next meeting is on the 20th October 2021 at 2.30pm in the Parrish Hall. New members are welcome to join us.
WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offe fers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

A Friend Indeed
We are always looking for volunteers at Age Concern North Norfolk (based in Sheringham) and you might like to become one of our befrienders for older people.
All letters must be supplied with name and full address (full address will not be published). Anonymous letters will not be published. Comments, views and opinions in readers letters are not necessarily shared by the editors or the publisher and we reserve the right to edit or not publish.
Dear Jo,
Amanda, one of our befrienders, writes: “Growing up I’ve always enjoyed the company of older people and so I asked Age Concern North Norfolk at the beginning of the pandemic if any of their clients might welcome the occasional phone call. The following week I was put in touch with Peter (not his real name) who lived locally and who had experienced a close family bereavement the previous year. He had no local relatives other than a sister some 30 miles away.”
I send good wishes for the Dark Skies Festival.
But it's not just for wildlife and country walks. More than this, and more urgent, is the blight of the over-use of lighting long into the night. My sister lives in a small village in Hampshire, and there are no streetlights at all. Cromer is bigger than that, but even so, side street lights are not needed. On main roads, yes, side streets, no.
But worse of all is the prodigal use of power to light shop windows when shops are closed. It's fine (just about) to have lights when there might be window-shoppers looking in, but to have bright lights all night is mad in every dimension. For instance, in West Street (lower) there are three estate agents whose bright lights are on all night. Not any window-shoppers, but the light prevents neighbouring residents from sleeping well.
“Yes, we do talk about the weather, but gradually we talked about other things. I always delight when Peter talks unprompted about his childhood, what led to his move to Norfolk, of times gone by, as well as plans for the coming week.”
Apart from the light of estate agents in West Street, there are the bright lights of Cromer Church - only 4 hours in the evening - 7-11 in winter, 8-2 in summer. But what's it all for?? The week before Christmas it gets dark before 4pm, but the lights are off until 7pm, when almost all shoppers have gone home. Meanwhile shoppers who would like to take a Christmas photo would have to take a picture with the church in darkness. And further, at the full moon, you can look straight east from West Street with the full moon very close to the Church, before 6pm. But not worth taking, with a dark church. By the time the church is lit at 7, the moon is not close - another photo not worth taking. John Martin Perry
“Having never met in person, we have developed a lovely friendship over the past 18 months, speaking every Saturday for a hearty conversation never less than 40 minutes.”

Choral Society announces first concert in two years of COVID “famine”
Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild
Christmas Bazaar Cromer Parish Hall Saturday 27th November 10:00am ² 2:00pm Variety of Stalls and Refreshments Tombola and Raffle Free admission ² All welcome All proceeds to RNLI
After a long-enforced break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to announce their first concert performance in 2 years. This will be a performance of Joseph Haydn’s magnificent oratorio The Creation.
The concert will take place in Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 13 November at 7:00 pm.
The performance will be conducted by musical director, David Ballard with soloists Rebecca Kaznowski, soprano (Gabriel); Daniel Bartlette, tenor (Uriel) and Dhilan Gnanadurai, bass (Raphael). Philip Adams will accompany on piano / organ.
The Creation dates from April 1798. It was inspired by Handel’s Messiah and Israel in Egypt, which Haydn had heard while visiting England. In the 1790s Haydn made two extended concert tours to London. Returning from the second of those trips in 1795, he brought with him a libretto telling the Biblical Creation story as related in John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost. Haydn conducted the oratorio’s premiere at Schwarzenberg Palace in Vienna.
Murder In Mundesley
Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple comes to Mundesley between the 27th and 30th October to try to solve a puzzle at the Coronation Hall, where the Mundesley Players are performing the mystery play A Murder Is Announced.
The play is set in the drawing room of Little Paddocks, a large house in Chipping Cleghorn. An announcement in the local newspaper states that a murder will take place at precisely six-thirty. As you would expect from one of the best Agatha Christie plays there are lots of red herrings and a few twists and turns to keep you thinking. Will you be able to solve the mystery before the local police, Inspector Craddock and Sargent Mellors? The nosy and slightly interfering Miss Marple thinks she can.
Lyndsey King performs the famous roll of Miss Marple. “So many great actors have interpreted this lady that it is a bit daunting for someone like me to take on a part that is so well known,” said Lyndsey. “I hope I can put my own stamp on her character”.
The large cast is made up from a range of regular Mundesley Players and a few new additions. The whole thing is directed by Cheryl Collings. If you like a good murder mystery you need to get in early as seats are expected to be in demand.
Tickets for A Murder Is Announced cost just £10 and are available online by visiting www.Ticketsource.co.uk and searching for Mundesley, (no booking fee). Or ring 0333 666 3366 (booking fee of £1.80). Included in the price is free tea and cake, provided by the Chipping Cleghorn Ladies Knitting Guild.
Booking Information: Tickets cost £14 (£16 on the door), under 18s free from the box office at Sheringham Little Theatre. Telephone 01263 822347 or online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

EAAA Bless and Open Norwich Base During Air Ambulance Week
On Friday 10 September, East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) celebrated Air Ambulance Week 2021 with a special event in Norwich to mark the official opening of the charity’s newly extended and renovated 24/7 operational base and headquarters at Norwich Airport.
During the event, the base, which is called Helimed House, was also blessed as part of a multi-faith ceremony to wish the air ambulance crews and patients the utmost safety.
22 key figures representing the lifeblood of the charity, including former patients, donors, crew, a staff member and a volunteer, cut a yellow ribbon to officially open the base, which was completed earlier this year.
Building the state-of-the-art facility has been a long-term organisational goal, enabling the charity to operate a 24/7 service by air and road for the first time. The new headquarters will help future-proof the organisation, bring more teams under one roof and provide adequate rest and welfare facilities for the Anglia One crew. The new base also includes an immersive training suite for the clinical teams.
Matthew Jones, CEO of EAAA, said: “It was
wonderful to be able to officially open and celebrate the new base with so many of the people who have made this incredible facility possible. This building provides everything we need for our crews to do their jobs to the best of their ability and will do so for many, many years to come. We’re also very proud to now have a community hub and our own training and conference facilities here, to help us be an even bigger part of the local community which keeps us flying.
“Developing the base was an enormous project and long-term goal of ours and was financed through lots of very generous gifts left to the
charity in supporter’s wills over recent years. These gifts have been used to safeguard the future of our operation across Norfolk and East Anglia and we’re incredibly grateful to now have such a world-class facility to call our home in Norfolk.”
One of the significant gifts left to the charity which made the new base possible included the sale of a 1964 Ferrari Nembo Spider, which was also present at the event to mark the special occasion. The Ferrari belonged to the late racing driver and motor enthusiast Richard Allen, who passed away in 2016. The sale of the car at auction generated over £500,000 which was used to purchase the land for the building. Members of the Allen family were present at the base opening to see the impact of this gesture during what was also National Remember a Charity Week; a week dedicated to promoting and celebrating the impact that gifts in wills can have for charities.

50yrs of Mundesley Lifeboat
Next year, Mundesley Volunteer Inshore Lifeboat will be celebrating 50 years of saving lives.
The lifeboat charity was established following a tragedy at sea in 1971 when David Tonkin, an experienced sailor, and his wife, capsized in their dinghy off Mundesley beach. Sadly, although his wife was rescued, David drowned.
the following year, with a borrowed boat, Mundesley Volunteer Inshore Lifeboat went into service as an independent ‘Declared Facility’ regarded by H.M. Coastguard as being on a par with, although not part of the RNLI service.
C
It was felt at that time that Mundesley needed its own rescue boat and
8th September 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of Mr Tonkin’s death and his brother Paul, together with his wife and sons were welcomed at the Station by Crew, former Crew and Friends. Chris Payne was one of those volunteers who had helped in the search for Mr Tonkin and became one of the first crew.

It's been a very busy summer with lots of hoglets coming into care with the mother disappearing after nests being disturbed, or RTA, with mild spell it will mean that more hoglets will be being born late in the season, please keep an eye out for these little juveniles, as they will need to build up their weight quickly before the cold weather sets in.

Old Fashioned Parkin I remember being given this cake as a child on bonfire night along with those teeth-cracking toffee apples.
Parkin originated in the North of England. Made with oats, traditionally it is baked after the oat harvest in early November and so became associated with bonfire night.
Both Yorkshire and Lancashire claim it as their own, but whatever the roots of this cake, it strikes the right note for a spicy, warming treat at this time of year. Make it well ahead of the time you want it as the cake improves in both taste and texture up to a week after it is made.
Ingredients 175g black treacle 150g butter 100g dark muscovado sugar 175g plain flour 2 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp grated nutmeg 275g porridge oats 1 large egg 150ml milk 1 tsp bicarb of soda
Method Preheat your oven to 180c. grease and line a square 18cm (7”) deep cake tin.
Put the treacle, butter and sugar in a saucepan over a low heat and melt together until everything has dissolved, stirring constantly. Set aside to cool.
Meanwhile, sift the flour and spices into a large mixing bowl, add the oats. In another bowl, whisk up the egg and milk and add the bicarb of soda.
hour, until firm to the touch.
Now add this to the dry ingredients along with the treacle mixture and mix well.
Pour the mixture into your prepared tin and bake in the middle of the oven for about an
Leave to cool in the tin for 15 minutes, then turn out, remove the baking paper and leave on the rack to cool completely.
When cool, wrap in parchment paper and store in an airtight tin for up to a week before cutting into squares. Jo – editor.
What a Champ!
These little puffy morsels are scrumptious and so moreish you need to make a decent sized batch as they will be coming back for more. What’s also great is that they are super economical to make too and are a fabulous way to use up leftover mash. Even confirmed carnivores will be chomping on these.
I’m always on the lookout for new recipes and ways to tweak existing ones, and in the quest to feed vegetarians with delicious buffet food have hit upon a winner. I personally can’t pass by a plate of sausage rolls without diving in but was keen to try and come up with a vegetarian alternative that is just as tempting.
I find that generally the cheese and onion equivalent is dry and lacking in substance, so have used a delicious savoury cheesy mash potato filling to stuff the rolls with, resulting in what is essentially Irish champ in pastry!
Champ Rolls Medium pan of Potatoes (use old potatoes suitable for mashing) Small pack garlic and herb soft cheese A little milk for mashing Bunch spring onions, finely chopped Strong cheddar cheese 2 packs ready rolled puff pastry I egg mixed with a little milk
Boil the potatoes until soft, then drain and leave with the lid off to dry a little.
Gently fry the spring onions for about 5 mins with a little olive oil then set aside.
Whilst the potatoes are still hot, mash with a
little milk and the garlic and herb cheese until smooth and creamy (don’t use too much milk, you want a good firm mash).
Add in the cooked onions and season the mash well then add a couple of good handfuls of grated strong cheddar cheese and stir in. Set aside to cool.
Once cool enough to handle place small spoons of mash in a sausage shape along a long piece of rolled out clingfilm and wrap up into a long sausage, pinching the ends.
Place in fridge to harden up for at least a couple of hours.
Keep the pastry on the greaseproof paper that it comes wrapped in and open out. Cut in half lengthways and use the egg mixture to wet one long side.
Unwrap the potato filling and place in the middle of the pastry and roll over to cover the filling, pressing down the wet edge to seal the filling in.
To book call 01263 512412
Cut into the size of roll you want, gently press a fork into the top of each roll and brush a little egg mixture over the tops.
Keep on the greaseproof paper, and place this onto a baking sheet.
Repeat with the rest of the pastry and place into a preheated oven on 180° for approx. 15 mins.
Serve immediately.

Panto beanstalk points the way back to post-lockdown life
A panto character and his magical beanstalk will help show people the way up and out of any lingering lockdown lows.
of action, song, dance, gags and special effects. Nick added:” The format was forced on is last year by Covid, but it worked, so we are repeating it and building on its success.” It will again by streamed to primary schools nationwide thanks to a link up with the Norfolk Music Hub and educational music experts Charanga at a special December 16 performance in partner venue St George’s Theatre, Great Yarmouth. Last year the show was seen by more than 200,000 pupils across the UK, who will learn the songs beforehand and be encouraged to dress up on the day of the live screening.
Jack and the Beanstalk running at Sheringham Little Theatre will chart the youngster’s journey from being trapped in the house with his trying-to-be-trendy mum to rediscovering the outside world, adventure and romance. It begins on Freedom Day and takes them up the beanstalk to confront the evil giant.
Writer and director Nick Earnshaw, the venue’s regular panto creator, said: “There will be all the usual panto magic, music and comedy but with a topical message of trying to show people they can once again get out and enjoy themselves.” He added that his training with Panto legend Eric Potts – a nationallyacclaimed writer, director and dame in festive fun across the UK - had helped him shape his own panto writing style. “One piece of advice that always has helped is using the Ladybird book stories as a base to make sure you get the storytelling elements clear within the show and then add a modern twist to the classic story,” Nick said.
Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “Our panto was a real boost for locked down children last year, and the only way they could see live festive fun. Things have eased and changed but we know some people are still struggling to regain their old lives - and we hope this year’s fun show will help, with a positive message and a chance to see the show in our socially- distanced seating.”
The 160-seater theatre is still only using 100 of them, and families wanting extra space should call the box office to discuss their booking.
Jack, played by Charlie Randall from Aylsham, has been educated through home schooling and “entertained” by on line dances by his embarrassing mum Dame TikTok (Harry Wyatt from North Walsham). Colin the family cow is

played by Ollie Westlake from Southrepps. Jack’s love interest is Jill Weaver (Emma Riches from Great Yarmouth who was Rapunzel last year).

Woman refused 5.00pm finish awarded £185,000 by Employment Tribunal
A mother, who was told that she could not work flexible hours by her employer, has been awarded a £185,000 payout by the Employment Tribunal.
Alice Thompson was a former estate agent and had a successful career for 10 years, prior to falling pregnant in 2018. After returning from maternity leave, she had asked her employer if she could work a four-day week and leave at 5.00pm, rather than 6.00pm, to enable her to pick her daughter up from nursery. Her employer refused her request on the basis that they could not afford for her to work shorter hours.
According to Thompson, her employer did not "seriously consider" her request and would not consider alternative flexible working options, with Thompson stating she was "shut down", "not listened to" and "not considered". She eventually resigned.
Thompson issued proceedings in the Employment Tribunal and successfully pleaded indirect sex discrimination on the basis that her employer's refusal to consider her flexible working request put her at a particular disadvantage because of her sex.
Thompson was awarded just under £185,000 in respect of loss of earnings, pension contributions, injury to feelings and interest.
Many employees will make flexible working requests after returning from maternity or paternity leave and it is important for employees to know their rights in relation to making flexible working requests and for employers to be aware of their options when considering flexible working requests made by employers.
It is therefore essential for employers and employees to seek independent legal advice at the earliest opportunity to ensure that requests are handled in the correct manner and to minimise the risk of protracted and costly litigation.
If you require advice on any area of employment law please do not Nicola Strefford hesitate to get in contact with Nicola Strefford, Associate and Head of Employment Law, or with our employment team to discuss how we can assist you.

JUSTICE FOR OUR SOCIAL CARE WORKERS!
North Norfolk Trade Union Council is launching a Good Practice Charter for workers in social care, as the foundation for a campaign to achieve justice on pay, working conditions and training for these vital staff.
On September 7th the government made its long-awaited announcement on ‘reform’ of social care, but amidst all the agonising about the costs, there was no mention at all of how to reward and support workers in the sector. Care workers are amongst the lowest-paid and least-supported in the country, despite being in the forefront of the Covid-19 pandemic for which several hundred paid with their lives.
Amongst the key points of the Charter are a living wage, paid travel time, realistic time to carry out duties, and a real commitment to training and health and safety. This is not just about fairness, it is about maintaining a sustainable care sector: at any one time there are around 112,000 vacancies in the industry, with more people leaving all the time.
Here is the testimony of a North Norfolk resident with over 20 years experience in setting up and managing domiciliary care in the voluntary sector:
‘The quality of the care delivered is dependent on the way an organisation recruits, trains, values and supports its staff... Care workers are a skilled workforce but historically have not had their skills formally recognised.
‘Care workers need the living wage. Domicilliary care workers in a rural area are travelling great distances between clients, this time should be part of their working time as they are still on duty and cannot be undertaking any other work or their own personal business while traveling……Staff should have minimum guaranteed hours with the costs factored into charges.
‘The delivery of personal care and assisting service users with therapeutic activities is a skilled role and deserves better rewards and recognition. Many care organisations pay ‘lip service’ to training and development just to meet the care standards. Staff should receive regular face to face support and training to ensure their mental and physical health and well being.’
North Norfolk TUC will be stepping up its efforts to achieve broad support for the Charter to ensure the long-term future of this vital service, particularly in North Norfolk which has a high proportion of people needing social care.

Keeping your pet smiling! We all know dental check ups are essential for our children and ourselves but what about our pets? Dental disease can affect all species and is regularly seen in cats and dogs over three years old.
Initially invisible plaque causes gum reddening (gingivitis) which progresses to mineralised brown tartar (calculus) that frequently requires dental scaling. Caught early gingivitis can be reversed, however, over time it progresses to periodontitis with tooth loss and infections of the tooth, gum and jaw bone, with a risk of infection spreading to other organs via the bloodstream.
Dental disease in cats poses particular challenges as they also suffer from chronic gingivostomatitis, a disease where inflammation spreads from the gums to the rest of the mouth. In this condition the body mounts an over-exaggerated immune response to tartar and plaque causing
painful inflammation. Treatment is complex and may involve tooth removal, antibiotics and immunosuppression, and should be discussed with your vet. Similarly, Feline Resorptive Lesions affect large numbers of cats. These lesions erode the area between the tooth crown (above gum) and root (below gum) causing teeth to fracture. Advanced lesions can be detected by visual inspection, however, early lesions are very painful but only detected by specialised dental x-ray and therefore dental xrays are always recommended.
When detected early dental disease can often be treated with brushing, however, as disease progresses treatment requires antibiotics, scale and polishing and even extractions. Not all dental treatments are the same and dental treatment should involve a thorough examination
under general anaesthesia where every tooth is examined visually and with a special probe. Dental X-rays should be performed to assess the extent of disease below the gum line in the root / socket area as this is invisible to the naked eye. These investigations determine the extent of disease and ideal treatment options. At Toll Barn we have a fully equipped dental suite including dental x-ray and our in-house vets have a particular interest in dentistry and are always happy to discuss treatment and prevention options for your pet.
Prevention is always better than cure and our team of qualified veterinary nurses are happy to provide our clients with free of charge dental appointments to show you how to provide the best dental care for your pet. If you are concerned about your pets dental health, or want to get your puppy or kitten started on the right track with oral health, or just want to discuss our specialised dental treatments including our state-of-the-art dental x-ray, please contact our team on 01692 407126.
event to make drivers aware of the need to pass horses wide and slow, whether they are being ridden or in a cart. Although most drivers already do this, some may not be aware, and this of course is in the Highway Code, so our aim is to highlight the problem horse riders have. Most horses that are out on the roads are traffic wise, but horses can be unpredictable, and it could just take a dog or child running towards the horses behind a hedge, or someone starting up a lawn mower, causing the horse to spook into the path of passing traffic. Not only is there the potential injury to horse and rider, but the average horse weighs around half a ton so could cause considerable damage to the vehicle. In the last twelve months 1,037 incidents have been reported to the British Horse Society. 80 horses have died, and 1 person was killed. 81% of incidents occurred because cars passed to closely to horses and 40% because vehicles passed by too quickly. These are of course only the incidents reported so the number is probably much higher. Danita wished to thank all those who took part, the Pavillion for allowing the horses to meet at the Recreation Ground, The Explorers Bar for laying on a BBQ at the end, SJR Photography for the amazing photos and all the people who came out to wave them off, as well as all the patient drivers who were held up on their way. The national campaign is an annual event, and it is hoped that next year more groups from Norfolk will participate.
Pass Wide and Slow Awareness Campaign 2021 178 groups of horses and riders, including a group from Briston near Holt, took part in a nationwide Pass Wide and Slow Awareness Campaign this weekend.

North Norfolk Beach Runner Robbie Britton to Release 1001 Running Tips Guide
British ultra-marathon runner and member of the North Norfolk Beach Runners, Robbie Briton, is publishing an informative and light-hearted guide of 1001 Running Tips this november. Written for beginners and experienced runners alike, the guide will be filled with helpful knowledge from training plans, nutrition and kit, to music, running with your dog, racing and fell running.
Britton said, ‘Writing the book the thought that kept going through my head was “good advice doesn’t have to be boring”, so hopefully there’s a good mix of laughter and sage advice in equal measure. Over the years, especially as a marathoner and ultra-runner, you have to go through the ups and downs of your running career and try to learn from all of it. These tips are a combination of lessons learned from the successes in my running and coaching, but also the mistakes as well. If they can help readers avoid a couple mistakes themselves then I’ll be happy.’
Britton’s achievements include racing from 3,000 metres up to 261 kilometres in one single day, running a marathon in 2:29 and coaching multiple race-winning and record-breaking athletes in the ultra-distance world. The co-owner of Fast Running, with an MSc in Performance Coaching and already an accomplished writer, his work has also appeared in Runner’s World, Trail Running, Men’s Running and The Guardian, among others.

The Paston Treasure Comes to Town
Cromer Artspace is delighted to be working with the Paston Footprints Project and Norwich Museum and Art Gallery to reproduce a large, printed version of a mysterious painting which dates from around 1665. The work adds to the Bigger Picture Project in Cromer, which has over 20 life-size prints of classic paintings displayed on walls around town, all printed with superb attention to detail by Graphic Edge in Sheringham.
Mystery surrounds the work, who was the painter? who was the pale young girl? the lavishly dressed servant? Parts have been overpainted, colours have changed oddly, and the picture vanished for more than three centuries until it reappeared 1947 when it was donated to Norwich Castle Museum.
bringing great works of art to town freely available for all to enjoy. The growing collection includes works by Van Gogh, Cezanne, Bruegel, Monet, El Greco, Renoir and many others. There is also leaflet and a comprehensive online resource: cromer-artspace.uk
The picture was unveiled on the wall of Cromer Community Centre by Cromer Mayor Mike Bossingham, Cromer Town Crier and Dr Rob Knee from Paston Footprints project who attended as Sir Robert Paston.
An unknown flemish artist produced the painting whilst staying Oxnead Hall, he captured a microcosm of the world as the Paston's knew it and the individual objects take us on a journey through time and space. The table is dripping with gold and silver, luscious fruits, rare shells, musical instruments and symbolic items heavy with hidden meaning.
Cromer Artspace are a registered charity dedicated to encouraging high quality art in public spaces, increasing opportunities and involvement in art for the people of Cromer.
The Bigger Picture Project, is supported with help from Cromer Town Council and North Norfolk District Council with funding from the Norfolk Strategic Fund, has been running since December 2020. The aim has been to brighten up the dark days of Lockdown and Covid by

North East Norfolk Bird Club “The first bird club in the country to introduce Green Badge Eco-Awards to its members.”
Although we have held some very successful talks over Zoom online; it’s been 19 months since our last indoor bird club meeting. We were delighted to welcome around 60 members throughout the day, at our first in-person event of 2021. We held a drop-in Summer Social Picnic at the wonderful Trimingham Village Hall.
As part of a full day’s programme, the day started with a walk to Temple Wood to meet the owner, club member Eddie Anderson. He was a brilliant and informative guide and the highlight was a kingfisher on the lake.
The weather was glorious and next up, was moth identification with Greg Bond at the hall. He helped a large gathering to enjoy the contents of a trap set up overnight. These fascinating creatures come in an impressive variety of sizes and colours.

The afternoon walk with naturalist Frances Farrow, was really a short stroll along some green lanes and quiet roads near Trimingham Village Hall. The object was to look at the general natural history with particular emphasis on wildflowers and insects. In the event insects were very scarce but some interesting plants were found. Francis clearly has a fantastic eye for detail and spotted Tansy Flower Galls. Members also looked at a Robin’s Pin-cushion, which is a gall of Dog Rose, caused by a small gall-wasp.

New East of England public involvement group set up for people with hearing loss
People with hearing conditions from across East Anglia are being invited to join a new group to help run research and change clinical service development at Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH).
The Hearing Services research team at CUH has launched the Hearing Loss Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Group to help patients give their views on how research is carried out and how hearing services could be improved for patients. The Group is open to people from across the region who have hearing loss and related conditions.
in one ear since 2016 due to a non-cancerous brain tumour. She said: “I’ve received an immense amount from the NHS over the years, and the NHS care I received when I was being treated for the tumour was outstanding. I feel that I should be prepared to make a contribution in recognition of this, so it’s not really that I needed to think hard about whether to join, it was more a case of thinking ‘why wouldn’t I?!’”
If you are interested in joining the Group or would like more information, please contact Sophie McKenny, PPI Group Coordinator, at add-tr.cambridgehearingppi@nhs.net or 01223 586625.
People with tinnitus and balance problems, and those who wear hearing devices such as cochlear implants are also invited to join the group, alongside carers for people with hearing conditions.
To find out more about wider research happening near you, visit bepartofresearch.uk. For more information visit www.nihr.ac.uk.
Guide from Cambridge, was the first person to sign up to the group. Ruth has had hearing loss
Members of the Group will take part in a number of ways, including giving feedback on how research is designed and carried out, and discussing ways to improve the experience of people taking part in studies. They will also help staff find ways to make positive changes to the department itself, such as improvements to services and facilities.

The Hearing Loss PPI Group will meet twice a year online, via Zoom, with monthly email updates sent by the team. No experience is necessary to join the group, but members need to be willing to share their views.
Sophie McKenny, Senior Research Nurse at the Centre, who has set up the group, said: “We carry out research here to improve treatments and care for patients with hearing loss, and we feel it’s really important for the people we’re trying to help to have a voice in deciding how our research is carried out and services can be improved. We also want to help people with hearing conditions to meet others like them so they can share experiences and give support to each other, so we hope as many people will join as possible.”
The Hearing Services Department at CUH carries out many studies funded and supported by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). Prof Carl Philpott, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Lead for the NIHR in the Eastern region, said: “The views of this group will provide vital perspectives to help us improve how research is carried out across the region and beyond. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who volunteers to be involved in research at all stages, from helping to design a study through to helping us test new treatments and ways to care for patients.”

Golden Time for Sam
Sam Watts, lead coach of North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club, led by example by competing himself by competing himself in the Scottish National Short Course Masters & Senior Age Group Championship and what a competition he had!
The event took place at Tollcross Park Leisure Centre Glasgow, under the auspices of Swim Scotland and swam three events in the 35-39 masters age group category. This was Sam's first competition in over two years.
His best result by far was his 200m freestyle in which he came first in a time of 2.12.72 - a full two seconds ahead of his nearest rival.
Sam was also runner up in the 400m freestyle. scoring 4.50.73 but explained that it was a hard-fought race. "This was a tough race for two reasons. I had done the 100m only 20 minutes before this race and it’s never easy to use two different energy systems in two very different races." However, after he swam the 100m, Sam had very mixed emotions and although he came sixth, he was, on the other hand, happy for now to record his second-best time ever of 1.00.51 He now wants to go on and break a minute over the distance. "I know that I’m capable of it and I will have another chance when I compete again in October" added Sam.
John Holden Vikings have a very active master’s section and to find out more e-mail them at enquiries@norfolkvikings.co.uk www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

Safe and effective Laser Hair Removal at the Coltishall Clinic
For many men and women, unwanted hair can be a nightmare. Getting rid of it can be painful. Until now the only options for removing unwanted hair were smelly hair removal creams, sharp razors, stinging wax or painful electrolysis needles. Our advanced approach to beautiful skin provides the ultimate solution. Now, men and women alike will be pleased with the results made possible by our Laser Hair Removal process.
What is the Laser Hair Removal process? Laser Hair Removal uses high-energy lasers to gently remove unwanted hair, putting an end to routine shaving and waxing. Because the laser treats more than one hair at a time, it is possible to treat larger areas such as the back, shoulders, arms, legs and face. Laser treatments leave your skin looking and feeling smoother and silkier. Best of all, Laser Hair Removal treatments are a safe, fast, gentle and effective alternative method for hair removal.
patient depending on skin and hair colour.
Removing hair does not make it grow back thicker, darker or quicker. The opposite is usually the case. The laser may cause hair to come back slower and thinner.
What is unique about Coltishall Clinic? We have several laser devices available so we can choose a laser based on your unique needs. We have many years of experience with more than 24000 successful treatments.
You can find out more information at www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call 01603 736487 to book an appointment.
Chocks Away!
New Farm Aviation Heritage Group Museum at Frettenham is now opening on Sundays twice monthly through until December from 10am to 4pm and entry is free of charge.
What are the benefits of Laser Hair Removal? • Larger areas may be treated using lasers than with electrolysis, waxing or tweezing. • It combines the speed of shaving with the lasting results. • Laser Hair Removal is effective on almost any area of the body where smoother, younger, hair-free skin is desired.
How many treatments will I need? The number of treatments you may require for optimal long-term benefits depends on the area you wish to have treated, the hair density and your hair’s growth cycle. Your hair grows in cycles and many factors influence its growth. Age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication and metabolism all play a part in your hair’s location, thickness and resilience.
The laser slows the growing capacity of follicles in the growth cycle at the time of the treatment. Since some hair follicles may enter their growth cycle after your treatment, multiple treatments may be required to deliver optimal results. Treatment results will vary from patient to
A lot of work was undertaken throughout the lockdown months, the layout has been altered, the displays extended, and we now have a tea room serving a selection of cakes, sausage rolls, ice creams, and hot and cold drinks. There is also a sales section stocking books, jigsaw puzzles, model cars, parts from B24 planes and 50 calibre inert ammunition. There is an especially large selection of aviation books, military, WWII, a few WWI, but also some novels, gardening and cookery books.

The museum probably has the largest display of B24 parts in the UK. We have an entire room dedicated to these aircraft, all recovered from Rackheath WWII American Airbase.
The Group is always interested in meeting new people and learning what they know about local air crashes, crash sites, and military history. Trevor, the museum owner, is very knowledgeable and is available for bookings to give to talks to interested groups.

CALLING ALL STROKE SURVIVORS and CARERS in North Norfolk
Would you like to join us for a social afternoon on Wednesdays twice a month. We meet at 2.15 pm for a 2.30 pm start in St.Andrews Church Hall on the Cromer Road, Sheringham, NR26 8SA, there is plenty of parking space. Sheringham market is usually open on Wednesdays, so you could make a day of it. This group started in 1983, and we had our 1st meeting since lockdown on September 8th 2021. We enjoyed a slide show by Brian Hedge called “The way we were” which is one of his most popular presentations. It brought back memories of childhood when at primary school we’d be given a ¾ pint of milk in a glass bottle, sometimes we had to thaw the milk out on the radiator in the winter months. Brian told us this milk ration started in 1946 and was paid for by the government. After our talk, we had our usual cuppa and biscuits followed by the raffle. We all receive a prize as we all take a little gift which we can spare. Then we have time to chat before going home around 3.45 pm. We enjoyed another meeting on 22nd September, the speaker the speaker was Brenda Hays with “A loade of o‘l squit”, our programme continues as shown below: 13th October Social afternoon 20th October Ursula Franklin (Dolls house miniatures) 3rd November TBA

Leaving a letter of wishes alongside your will Making a will is an important part of lifetime legal planning, but where should you set out your wishes for small sentimental gifts or for funeral arrangements? How will you explain the decisions you made in your will? These are some of the questions we are asked when people want to make a will for the first time or wish to make provision for something out of the ordinary.
For your will to be legally binding, it must be worded using specific legal terminology which does not leave much scope for creativity or explanations.
Alongside your will, you can write a letter of wishes in which you can express yourself in a more personal way. While such a letter is not legally binding, it does place a strong moral obligation for those involved in your will to follow your guidance.
Uses for a letter of wishes
Gifts One of the most common ways a letter of wishes is used is to leave small items, such as personal belongings, to certain beneficiaries without having to include specific gifts in your will. Provided your will references the separate letter of wishes,
this is a perfectly acceptable and even a common way of leaving such items.
Your chosen beneficiaries will not be legally entitled to the items, but your executors should ensure that they receive them unless there is a very good reason why your wishes cannot be honoured.
Funeral wishes Another popular use for a letter of wishes is to outline funeral wishes. A letter of wishes relating to your funeral can include preferences as to cremation or burial, instructions for your funeral service, or even who should be notified of your death and how they should be notified.
family after your death. It will also provide evidence of your views should a claim be made against your estate.
A letter of wishes can be changed as often as needed, without you having to review your will each time, saving you time and money.
Explanations As well as offering the opportunity to express your wishes in relation to certain circumstances or specific gifts, a letter of wishes can also be used to explain why you have chosen to structure your will in the way you have.
For example, if you have left a greater share of your estate to one of your children or a charity, a letter of wishes can enable you to explain the decision more fully which may prevent or reduce discord between the
How we can help A letter of wishes is a useful aid in ensuring that your voice can continue to be heard after you have died, however it is important to remember that it will not be legally binding, and it is equally important to understand when a letter of wishes is and is not appropriate.

Last time, I mention Bobbie and Leo, the two Ragdoll cats recently handed in as strays. During our discussion with our friends from Head Office we learned that another local branch had also taken in several Ragdoll cats and kittens, and they believed that they had been dumped by a breeder. This will be looked at closely to see if there is any connection with our two boys. A very worrying thought. Two other Bobbie strays taken in recently are Edna, a lovely old girl who had been living under a car for some time and Mabel a three-legged cat with thyroid problems found by the side of the road at Pretty Corner. Both these cats were in very poor condition. Edna has now had most of her teeth extracted and is gradually gaining weight as is Mabel who is very good taking her medication. Lots of TLC, a nice warm bed to cuddle up in and good food will help these lovely old cats to enjoy life once more.
North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Since the last article we have had a visit from two members of Head Office who are responsible for ensuring we have the support we need and to ensure our cats are kept in accordance with Cats Protection policies and guidelines. They were due to visit just before lockdown so were very interested to learn that life for cats in our care had not been unduly affected.
We were able to take them to see some of the cats in care and to check that our pens were up to the required standard. Several of the cats are in care with Lesley, who fosters cats for us in her cattery at Hemsby, so a visit there was top of the list. They were both very impressed with the cattery, the amount of space each of the beautiful pens has with solid walls, tiled floors and underfloor heating. Each pen has its own individual run which allows them to see what is happening outside. Because they have solid surfaces it is also very easy to keep them clean, especially important when new residents arrive or should there ever be a cat with an infectious disease.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
We then went to Caroline’s to see her four lovely PVC pens, although there was a challenge here as telegraph poles in her narrow lane were being changed and the road was closed so we had to leave the cars and walk. We were advised that the pens were of the standard required as advised in the recent guidelines issued by ADCH. This is an important issue as Cats Protection, along with other like-minded charities, are hoping to see all animal charities registered with local councils and encouraged to adopt the standards that have been issued by ADCH. Apparently, this may happen in Scotland shortly and they believe once introduced there, England, Wales and Northern Ireland will follow. This can only be of benefit to all cats that are taken into care by registered charities and should ensure that the level of care they receive is of the same high standard.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen. Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve basis, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home.

The NANSA league team played their final game at home to Smallburgh and Dilham and won 4-2 on points, 35 shots to 28. Winning rink was Jean N, Philip E and Gary Y, 25-12. With the number of rinks being reduced, we have come up against some strong opponents this season but not disgraced ourselves in the league. Well done everyone who assisted Captain Tony and thanks for your efforts.

New Trophy Remembers Inspirational Golf Club Chairman An inspirational chairman of Mundesley Golf Club has been honoured through a new trophy in his memory. Donald Stuart died aged 69 in August after a battle with cancer, during which he continued to lead the club through a successful membership drive, and the challenges thrown up by Covid. A trophy in his name has been presented to its first ever winner, Lewis Crosby, following a five-week season of Friday night social golf competitions for under-40s. Donald’s golfing daughter Fiona, who came up with the trophy idea, said: “The trophy was a good way to encourage younger golfers to join, meet, and compete. Dad had enjoyed a similar competition when he moved from Scotland to Leicester aged 33 and made a lot of friends.” Mr Stuart, who fought cancer for 14 months only stepping down two months before his death, led an overall club membership drive during his nearly five years in the chair during which it more than doubled its membership. Fiona added:” I am really proud of the legacy dad created. He put a lot of time in and sacrificed a lot for the good of the club.”
There was also a second award, the Turn Up Trophy, which reflected Donald’s ethos that golf is about taking part and enjoying the game, which was won by Mark Cook.
Donald Stuart at the 19th hole
The main trophy was presented by Donald’s brother Micky who flew in from Dallas, USA for an event which was also supported by the Friday night group and other members, including wife Lorraine. Mr Stuart’s funeral was held on 21st Sept at the parish church in Ludham, his home village, attended by colleagues from the golf, banking, business and charity worlds. Donald, who was born in Edinburgh to a golfing family began playing at the age of four. His career with the Bank of Scotland saw him working in Leicester, Oxford Street in London and Norwich where he was the regional director for the East of England. He was a golfing member at Mortonhall in Edinburgh, The Leicestershire Golf Club, West Byfleet in Surrey and then Mundesley when he retired, but remained busy doing consultancy and charity work including as a trustee at Open in Norwich. He also has two sons Graeme and Callum. Donations from the funeral are in aid of Cancer Research UK and Mundesley Golf Club.
His successor chairman at the golf club Andrew Keates said: “Donald was an inspirational chairman for over four and a half years who worked tirelessly on behalf of Mundesley Golf Club. Amongst his major successes was in the stabilisation and growth of the club where the playing membership more than doubled to in excess of 420. The club is a far better place for having Donald as a member and chairman.

“Although Donald was diagnosed with a terminal illness in the spring of 2020 he continued to lead the club through the challenges associated with Covid-19 with distinction. A man who never complained and always endeavoured to find a fair and equitable way forward.”
