1940s

Sheringham, Holt and Weybourne saw the long awaited return of the 1940s weekend on the 17th and 18th of September.

Sheringham High Street was transformed with taped up windows, Union Jack bunting, and stunning displays of period clothes and ephemera Parking was scarce, but vintage buses, working as a park and ride service from Cookie’s Field, offered the opportunity for many more to attend the event There was a costume parade at 4pm on the Saturday

Thousands of attendees showed up to the weekend appropriately attired A dizzying variety of civilian and military outfits were on display: Navy Commanders, and Army Officers in full military regalia, men in tweed suits, bow ties and fedoras, dames complete with victory rolls, pearls and A line skirts and of course Rosie the Riveter look a likes with jumpsuits and red spotted bandanas

Across the towns, 1940s period music from performers such as The Skyliner Big Band, The Knightingales and Sarah Mai resounded throughout the

weekend

Weybourne Station provided live music from The Swingtones and others

Weybourne also offered period food and drink at the Station Buffett and exhibited a variety of military camps At the exhibition site next to Holt Station visitors could feast their eyes on dozens of military vehicles, vintage cars, and of course the full size Spitfire replica

This year ’s event had an unusual poignancy due to the recent passing of the Queen, and there were many sincere tributes to the late monarch on display across the towns

North Norfolk Railway once again organised the event, and made sure that activities ran in cooperation with volunteers and local councils Steam trains ran every half hour, and conveyed thousands of passengers over the two days The event has come a long way since it was debuted as a one off event over 20 years ago, and certainly shows no signs of slowing down

Rossini: Fine tunes and glittering young soloists

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society kick off their 2022 23 season in St Peter ’s Parish Church, Sheringham on Saturday 12 November at 7 00 pm with a fine example of Rossini’s choral music: Petite Messe Solennelle

Despite its title this work is neither “petite” or “solemn”! What it does have is many fine tunes brought to you by the choir with two accompanists and a glittering cast of early career professionals The soloists will be Rebecca Kaznowski (soprano), Maria Willis (mezzo soprano), James Beddoe (tenor) and Alex Bower Brown (bass)

The performance will be conducted by David Ballard and accompanied by Philip Adams (organ) and William Falconer (piano)

The mass was written in 1863, possibly at the request of Count Alexis Pillet Will for his wife Louise to whom it is dedicated The composer, who had retired from composing operas more than 30 years before, described it as “the last of my péchés de vieillesse” (sins of my old age)

This is the Society’s 90th Anniversary season having been formed in 1933 The choir will mark its Emerald Anniversary in April 2023 with a concert celebrating the changes in choral music over the last 90 years.

Mundesley lifeboat launches its 2022 Christmas Cards

With the imminent arrival of a new lifeboat in Mundesley, the Friends of Mundesley Lifeboat have just launched a set of three new Christmas Cards in a bid to raise additional funds in support of the Mundesley Volunteer Inshore Lifeboat Rescue

The cards are available at their charity shop in Station Road, Mundesley with one showing a picture of the new boat, 'Edna Claxton' when it was in Mundesley for its dedication service on the 10th July this year

The boat is currently being fitted out at a boatyard in Great Yarmouth, before undergoing sea trials and safety certificate before it can be put into service

The Mundesley Lifeboat is currently celebrating 50yrs of service as an independent organisation run entirely by unpaid volunteers

Stage Direct amateur drama group are about to perform their new play ‘The Female of the Species’ by Joanna Murry Smith at Sheringham Little Theatre

Following on from Stage Direct’s wonderful fundraising success for Sheringham Little Theatre earlier in June, with ‘One O’clock from the House’, they hope to continue their run of success with this, their third show this year at Sheringham Little Theatre, being performed on the 11th and 12th of November 2022 With new members joining their troupe, the audiences will get a chance to espy some new raw acting talent on stage

‘Female of the Species’ was premiered in London’s West End in 2008. Joanna’s plays have been performed in Australia and worldwide ‘Female Of the Species’ is a “deliciously wicked” play that "deftly” entices the viewer into the other realms of farce

Margot Mason, a pioneer of the 1970s Women's Liberation movement has won international adulation for her books on the subject but now, the aging author has hit writer's block Struggling alone in her country house, she is surprised by a visitor, a student, idealist and daughter of one of Margo's most dedicated followers. Initially delighted, Margo's feelings soon change when her visitor produces handcuffs and a gun and proceeds to hold her prisoner

Warm Welcome to father peter

The Catholic Parish of Our Lady and St Joseph Sheringham and Cromer are delighted to welcome our new priest Father Peter Wygnanski, as he succeeds Father James Fyfe who has retired to Kent Father Peter, 32, grew up in Cambridge and has a background in Engineering and Electronics and worked in London before following his vocation and studying in Rome for 8 years Father Peter is looking forward to working with his Parish and the local community as well as other local churches and clergy As a passionate musician, Father Peter is especially pleased to be in North Norfolk, a part of the country with such a rich musical tradition

Arriving in Sheringham having completed post graduate studies of Theology in Rome, Father Peter is currently working on a PhD, researching novel ways for Christian believers to understand their relationship with humanity’s future. He hopes his study might offer opportunities for parishioners and local communities to find out more about the teaching of the Catholic Church and encourage debate and participation He is involved with the Diocesan Youth Team and hopes to be able to develop this as he settles into his new role

Cromer and Sheringham probus Club

On 6th September we had, as usual, an excellent lunch at The Links Hotel in West Runton, and then Paul Hensby and Mike Goldwater spoke to us about Poppyland Community Radio

This is an online only service which started in February this year and is based at The Belfry Centre in Overstrand.

Its aim is to combat loneliness and to encourage a sense of community; its programmes include “mardling” (chat) sessions, interviews and a wide variety of music and “aim to inform and entertain, enhancing the quality of life of (the) listeners ” (Quotation from its website poppylandradio co uk)

All the staff are volunteers, and the station is financed by a trust fund and by sponsorship arrangements. The station would like to recruit further “Mardle” presenters and also people with technical and other expertise.

It is also looking for some additional studio space Paul and Mike made it clear that this talk was deliberately a recruitment drive (!) but in doing so gave a very interesting talk on this local initiative At the end there was a time for questions and then we thanked Paul and Mike with a round of applause

North Walsham Market place improvement Works Car park arrangements

As works to improve North Walsham Market Place and town centre progress, North Norfolk District Council can confirm the car parking arrangements in the town are as follows during the period of work:

Bank Loke car park will be open every day (with usual charges applied) except Thursdays when it accommodates the town’s weekly market.

New Road car park will be open every day (with usual charges applied), where there are refurbished toilets to support the new travel hub, with buses removed from the Market Place and to relieve congestion between the post office and Lidl’s Vicarage Street car park will be open with

free parking From January new public toilets including Changing Places facilities will be built on the site of the existing dated toilets Mundesley Road car park will provide free two hour parking throughout the period of the Market Place works, following a three week closure to improve the surface

For town centre workers and long stay users, there is a new free public car park at Hornbeam Road (NR28 0FX), which is a 10 minute walk from the town centre

Once the works are complete the free 30 minute spaces, historically accommodated in the Market Place will be provided for 60 minutes on parts of the Bank Loke and Vicarage Street car parks

The Strand Club September Report

Our September meeting in the White Horse, Overstrand began with a minute’s silence held in memory of Queen Elizabeth II who had died on the 8th September after a reign of over 70 years, after which our Chairman, Jackie gave a short eulogy on her life and reign

The speaker this month was archivist Brian Hedge who gave a slide show on ‘Overstrand’ Once known as the village of millionaires. Now a tranquil seaside resort It was interesting to see photos of how both Overstrand and Cromer have developed over more than 100 years with the coach and horses form of transport being overtaken by the introduction of the trains Brian also does a musical quiz, and the members expressed an interest, so this has been booked for September

Cromer Pier ’s biggest fan, Jo Raby, known as

Row Jo", died at the end of August, aged just 60 Jo went to nearly every performance for many, many years, and always sat in the same seat

Back in 2015 the Pier put a plaque on seat A17 (as pictured) describing Jo as their ‘Greatest Fan’

"She had been coming for decades," said Debs Lewis from the theatre "I have been here 12 years and she was very much a firm feature when I arrived Coming to the box office to buy her tickets in blocks was a big part of the thrill for Jo but we always made sure that a few extras were thrown in without her knowing ” Debs added,”the cast always mentioned Jo during productions and she was incredibly kind and thoughtful, regularly bringing in sweets and presents for the theatre staff and cast ”

She was invited on to the venue's carnival float every year and to each season's opening and closing nights, which were the highlights of her year

"I think for Jo it was always about a feeling of belonging she loved to feel part of the production," Debs continued "The cast always brought her into it, and she loved being picked out She loved the show, but it was really more about the emotion of it, the belonging And we always made her feel like she was part of us How could you not?”

Her seat number A17 is slap bang in the middle of the front row We will now be leaving it empty for ever more in her honour "

I wish to say a big Thank You to Glendon House management, staff and their families who participated in the event and the behind the scenes staff and family members of Glendon House residents who helped to organise that perfect day and the public who generously contributed money to allow us to reach such a great total

At the moment I am organising a fundraising day to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness UK On 21st October Glendon House staff will wear pink to work and contribute £2 each to start off the event Then on the following day, to get public attention, staff will wear their bras over their clothes to mark Breast Cancer Awareness and will walk from Overstrand to Sheringham to raise money

Ever wondered what to do with all that pumpkin flesh you scoop out when carving your Halloween pumpkin? Well, here’s the answer make some cake to hand round on Halloween night! This is a quick and simple traybake with a touch of warming spice to enjoy whilst waiting for the trick or treaters.

Ingredients

300g self raising flour

300g soft brown sugar

pumpkin Traybake

3 teaspoons ground mixed spice

2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda

175g sultanas

4 eggs, beaten

200g butter, melted

zest of 1 orange + 1 tablespoon of juice

500g pumpkin flesh, grated

We are all being told to eat healthily, eat the rainbow, eat 5 a day, but budget must factor into our eating habits too Adding in extra veg need not cost the earth if you shop clever and use seasonal veg, and you can easily add in extra fibre and even protein by keeping tins of beans and pulses on the shelf; include a tin of green lentils with your bolognaise, add extra mixed beans to chilli, pop in some haricot beans with your soup A really easy way to get more veg with your roast dinner or sausage and mash is by adding veg to the mashed potatoes, think root veg like parsnips, celeriac, swede and carrot, all of which are reasonably priced at this time of year I’ve used bacon, but the recipe below is easily adaptable to any protein, so you could use any cooked meat, corned beef, bacon or even tinned fish such as tuna or salmon If you’re vegan, use baked or fried smoked tofu It makes the most of seasonal veg, with

sultanas in a large bowl, in another bowl whisk together the eggs, melted butter, zest and juice and tip into the dry ingredients, add the grated pumpkin and mix thoroughly Spoon into the baking tin, level and bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown and springy to the touch

For the topping, beat together the cream cheese, soft butter, orange juice and 1 teaspoon of the juice until smooth

When the cake comes out of the oven, leave for 5 minutes then prick all over with a skewer and drizzle over the remaining orange juice.

When the cake is completely cold spread the cream cheese topping over the entire cake and sprinkle orange zest over the cake to decorate (Pumpkin sprinkles or any other decoration you choose would be fine too)

Smoked bacon, finely chopped

1 large white onion, chopped finely A little oil

2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped Potatoes, peeled Celeriac, peeled Parsnip, peeled Carrot

A little grated cheese to top Fry the bacon with the onion in a little oil until crispy, adding in the garlic for the last few minutes and being careful not to burn it Meanwhile, cut your potatoes into large chunks, and all the other veg smaller so that they cook at the same time, and put into a large pan of water Bring to the boil, turn down and simmer until the veg are soft, then drain and mash with a little butter and milk, stirring in the herbs and bacon/onion/ garlic until all combined Place in an oven proof dish, sprinkle over the grated cheese and put into a preheated oven on 180° for about 20 minutes until piping hot throughout Serve with greens or baked beans

We all know how stressful the firework season can be for our pets so here at Toll Barn Vets we have a few helpful tips to help keep pets as calm as possible Animals have very sensitive hearing and loud bangs can be painful whilst the flashing lights can be scary Always keep dogs and cats indoors during fireworks and make sure dogs are walked earlier in the day to avoid being out when fireworks are let off.

Many pets go missing at this time of year when they get scared by fireworks so make sure all pets are easily identified with a collar and tag or microchip (with up to date contact details) so that they can be reunited with you if they get scared and manage to run off

It can help to build your pet a safe den and keep windows, doors and curtains closed to minimise noise as much as possible Some pets will find it comforting to have an alternative noise so keeping the radio or television on can help to reduce awareness of the sound of fireworks

during stressful situations so try to act as normally as possible and make sure not to tell pets off if they are behaving in a stressed manner during fireworks It is also important to reward calm and relaxed behaviour with cuddles and treats!

It is essential to ensure enough ventilation still remains underneath the cover Make sure pets have enough bedding to burrow and hide in should they feel stressed

These products can help pets feel more relaxed and calm within the environment and should ideally be started at least 48 hours (preferably longer) before fireworks are due to start Noise

Ghost Walks Return for halloween

Spooking the Streets of North Walsham and Cromer

North Norfolk’s market towns are full of history, murder, unexplainable goings on and legends of old North Walsham Ghost Walks are back again this Halloween but this time, for the first time, will be presenting Ghost Walks in Cromer too

Joseph Ballard, who leads the walks and is also director of New Stages, said: “I’ve been leading ghost walks around North Walsham since 2015 and I’ve also presented walks for private groups around Cromer this time we’ve got them open to the public so they can find out more about where they live. I enjoy embracing the past with its quirky twists and sometimes local legend is added during the walks too, when people tell me they have experienced a supernatural moment themselves ”

The North Walsham Ghost Walks have attracted visitors from further afield, such as a couple from Cumbria who made a weekend of it last year because they had heard about the walks and travelled to experience them for themselves! The walks also help raise funds for the different community projects of New Stages, such as North Walsham People’s

Theatre, who are presenting the family pantomime Sleeping Beauty this Christmas

Cromer Ghost Walks take place on Sunday 30 October at 6pm and 7 15pm and the North Walsham Ghost Walks take place on the evening of Halloween itself on Monday 31 October with all tickets £4 50

October is likely to be a repeat of September which was quite mixed, even having high pressure in close attendance, it’s position allowed much colder air to come down the east coast which not only produced some rain but certainly subdued temperatures

November, because the tropical Atlantic has been much quieter than predicted, there is a chance that high pressure might give us a reasonable month, otherwise changeable Either way, colder air could be poised to come in from the east and last at least to mid December, thereafter, until the end of the month, somewhat less cold air will still be hanging around.

Following on from August, September has also been very busy especially as I have been manning the “cat phone” while Stephanie has been taking a well deserved holiday Although we state our preferred method of contact is by telephone, I have realised we do still get many enquiries by email As these come to me, I have been able to deal with them directly rather than advise the enquirer to give Stephanie a call However, as so many of these have been for the same cats, I have not been able to respond to them straight away as we may already have several people interested in said cats and we deal with all enquiries on a first come basis

Several more of the cats have been reserved and will be leaving us shortly We also have people interested in some of the younger cats featured on the website and as already explained these will be dealt with in the order in which they were received

Bear, one of the cats mentioned last time, has recently had his blood test and we are waiting for the result which, hopefully, will allow him to leave immediately for his new home His new family are keeping their fingers crossed that the test indicates no further action is needed. Lionel, the other cat mentioned, has recovered from his operation Initially he tended to hide but has now come out of his shell and is ready to join a new family Although we tried once again to contact the owner of the stray cat, we received no response whatsoever to emails, phone calls or the paper collars The cat was due to go on our waiting list, to come in when a pen became available, but happily the lady who had been caring for him has decided to keep him

We have several young cats that do need homes with people who are experienced cat owners, willing to give them plenty of time to settle They all have lovely temperaments but are still quite timid when meeting new people Cats like Sophie and Frankie who joined us from a local

This is Stella, she was found at side of the road when her finder witnessed her being hit by a car, unfortunately although she has made a full recovery, she is now unable to curl up into a tight ball which makes her very vulnerable to predators, and cold weather The good thing is that she is going to an enclosed garden where she can live a more natural life without danger and will be able to be monitored in case any problems should arise

If you see a hedgehog out during the day, they are usually in trouble, please pick them up and pop in a box before seeking help. I have had 2 incidents in one week of finders ringing me and the hedgehogs had disappeared and not been found again One was seen surrounded by flies which is a sign of some kind of injury, so the prognosis for that one is not good

Norfolk Supports National policing operation following the death of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ii

More than 90 officers from Norfolk Constabulary took part in the biggest policing operation the country has ever seen supporting events which culminated in the state funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

The historic day was also memorable for 16 of Norfolk’s student police officers, who were deployed to Sandringham After joining the force in April, the officers swore their allegiance to the Queen in their attestation ceremony and will then serve His Majesty King Charles III when they pass out from their training

Officers were sent to London on mutual aid as well as more locally at the royal residence at Sandringham as part of well established policing plans following the announcement on Thursday 8 September that Her Majesty the Queen had passed away at Balmoral in Scotland

Since then, officers have been working in the capital carrying out patrols alongside Metropolitan Police officers as well as colleagues from other forces across the country as thousands of people travelled to pay their respects

Locally, officers have been working at Sandringham alongside estate staff to ensure the safety of those travelling to the Norfolk royal residence to pay their respects The estate has seen record numbers of visitors, with more than 60,000 people believed to have visited the estate this weekend to pay their respects and lay floral tributes.

tion of a high number of well wishers wanting to visit the area

The force has also worked closely with partner agencies across Norfolk, including county and district councils and other local resilience partners, to support local events and follow national protocols.

Deputy Chief Constable Simon Megicks thanked the public for their support during this period of national mourning He also thanked officers and staff who have worked on the national operation, known as London Bridge, and for those who have continued with the day to day policing issues

He said: “The country said goodbye to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and I’m exceptionally proud of the role policing has played in making this extraordinary state occasion so flawless and memorable

“We have a long and proud history here in Norfolk of serving the Royal Family at Sandringham and we’ve always taken our role within Operation Bridges seriously and have planned and prepared for this eventually for many years Sandringham has been in the national and international spotlight, with the Prince and Princess of Wales visiting to view the floral tributes and to speak with members of the public

Since the sad news of the late Queen’s death was announced, officers, supported by colleagues from the Special Constabulary and student officers, have been at Sandringham helping guide people to pay their tribute Thousands of people have visited the area and flowers completely

PC Daniel Brock said: “While there’s been lots of early starts and short turnarounds, it’s been a privilege and an honour to be able to be involved in this historic occasion alongside the Metropolitan Police and officers from other forces We dealt with several challenging issues and a personal highlight for the team was walking down Whitehall at 4 30am on the day of the funeral to be met by thousands of people clapping, cheering and thanking all the officers for their work ”

It was Coronation Day

I remember holding Mums hand very tight There was no one else in sight,

A lady arrived with a list She said, ‘’You’re not on here, you must have been missed ’’ Mum was beginning to lose her rag

And I was feeling very sad, I told the lady I would be four in two days’ time And Mum said, I know it’s a bit of a fine line I said, ‘’the Queen would be happy for me to have a mug, And she would send it with her love ’’

That seemed to do the trick I was grateful, I was beginning to feel sick! (I’ve still got the mug and it stands proudly on show, I seem to be giving my age away!)

Cromer Hospital

The new Cromer hospital which opened in 2012 was funded by legacies from Sagle Bernstein, whose sister was cared for by the hospital, and former patient Phyllis Cox, who was so impressed with the care she received there in the 1950s, made arrangements for the hospital to receive her £1 4m estate Her husband had passed away before her and they did not have any children

Sagle Bernstein lived in Cromer with her sister Muriel Thoms, and left £11 4m as a thank you for the care Mrs Thoms received at the hospital before she died in 1998

Charitable gifts are a great option for those without close family

The effect of charitable giving on inheritance tax

For many, tax saving is not the key consideration for leaving sums to charity, but it is usually a welcome side effect

Any gifts you leave to charity in your will pass

William Henry (Fatty) Foulke was a professional goalkeeper who, if he didn’t eat all the pies, certainly gave it a good try

Few people remember him today Yet he was truly the stuff of legends He was big for sure Bulky would have been no exaggeration, although nobody could agree about his exact size or weight Some said he was 6ft 9ins and eventually weighed anything up to 24 stone

Whatever the exact statistics he was twice the weight of a modern ‘keeper Along with his ample figure he was not one who liked to be messed with.

Foulke played for Sheffield United, Chelsea and Bradford City between 1894 1908, that much is true But as for the rest? It is hard to know what is fact and what was at best an embroidered version of the truth as he was also a showman

For instance, it is said he was not averse to picking an opponent up and dumping him in the goal A player advancing on his goal would be thinking “do I score, and risk irritating the guy or make sure I miss and live to play again?”

Foulke had a pathological dislike of referees After Sheffield United had been beaten in the 1902 Cup Final he complained that Southampton’s equalising goal should not have stood

Foulke left the dressing room dripping wet from the shower, stark naked and chased the referee who took refuge in a broom cupboard Officials had to intervene to prevent him tearing the door down! One can only imagine what Match of the Day would have made of that!

His legend grew with his age and weight One account has it that he went down to the dining room where his team were staying and polished off all 11 breakfasts If so Gaviscon would have signed him up for sure!

It has been said that Foulke was the original subject of the football chant of “who ate all the pies” Doubtful because it is sung to the tune of Knees Up Mother Brown which didn’t emerge until 1918, two years after Foulke’s death

It is likely some of the legends that surrounded the big man were a result of astute marketing and done to boost attendances One story has it that Chelsea positioned boys behind Foulke’s goal to make him look even larger than he was and that was how ball boys came into being Although it almost certainly wasn’t the case

He didn’t He owned a shop in Sheffield and was often seen walking around in a smart suit with his football medals hanging from his neck

We will never see the likes of Foulke again that’s for sure. It is hard to imagine a keeper grabbing Lionel Messi and throwing him into the net without sending VAR into apoplexy!

Returns to Mundesley

Schoolboys Finley and Joel will shortly be starring in Goodnight Mister Tom at the Coronation Hall Mundesley They play evacuees from London during World War II who have suddenly been taken from the city and dropped into the countryside They are then billeted with the locals of Little Weirwold

Many people will remember the film of the same name with the late John Thaw as Mr Tom The heart rending tale of an elderly recluse and a small boy forced together in circumstances beyond their control The stage play by the Mundesley Players tells the same story with Finley Spanton (11) as William Beech and Neil Ellson as Mister Tom.

“Simply reading the script had me in tears,” said Cheryl Collings the director “There is so much depth in the characters Bringing them to life on stage makes the whole thing seem so real At one particularly moving section during rehearsals, I noticed that even the hardened actors and crew were starting to well up ”

The part of bright and exuberant Zack is played by Joel Swash (9) who recently appeared as Young Shrek at the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre. “All the child actors are doing so well,” said Cheryl, “and sometimes the adults find themselves being prompted by their younger counterparts when they miss a cue ”

Goodnight Mister Tom is sometimes used in schools to teach the 9 11 year olds about the life of children of their own age during wartime It shows the hard reality of kids’ lives during that period, plus the friendship of a sickly boy who has been treated badly by his mother and the new and surprising friendships he makes.

Cromer Tennis Club Selected by lTa to highlight Gender Balancing drive in Tennis

Cromer Tennis Club, like many tennis clubs around the country has far fewer junior girl member than boys The Club’s current junior membership is 39 girls compared to 73 boys (35%) In 2021 in the UK only 30% of regular monthly tennis players were female

In UK, the drive for increasing female participation in tennis has been led by Judy Murray, mother of Andy Murray In 2012 Judy Murray was spurred into action when she was shown statistics produced by the UK government body, Women in Sport That research showed then, “that only 5% of all sports coverage in newspapers was about women athletes and that only half a percent of sponsorship money, across all sport, goes to women”

In 2017 Judy Murray founded She Rallies with the aim attracting more girls to tennis, more female tennis coaches to build a bigger and stronger female workforce to grow the female game In June 2022, the LTA and She Rallies launched Rallying Together a rallying call for the tennis world to put its house in order Rallying Together is powerfully argued full colour publication and can be found on the LTA website, www lta org uk

Rallying Together calls for female participation in tennis to be increased from 30% and to help girls stay in the sport for longer; and for female tennis coaches to form 40% of the LTA Level 1 workforce (up from 29% in 2019) and explains how this can be done

Now, as a follow up, the LTA are producing a series of films for a new series called She Rallies It will focus on individuals and role models who have made a contribution to tennis, with the aim of encouraging more women and girls to take up the sport The LTA sent a film crew to Cromer, “as it seems like Cromer Tennis Club is really keen to encourage more women / girls to play”

The film crew arrived (in pouring rain!) at Cromer on August 25th at 7 30 am, spending nearly a whole day at the Club interviewing and filming the Club’s resident female coach Lisa Stickells and her pupils Katie and Steven; then interviewing her father Icarus Hines who encouraged her first to play squash and then to take up tennis and become a tennis coach and finally interviewing Club chairman Kelvin van Hasselt

In 2021, The Club set up a Pathway to Level 3 course at the Club, after which 2 female trainee coaches at the Club, Lisa Stickells and Sian Stoppani successfully qualified as LTA Level 3 coaches In 2021 the Club set up Junior Club for Girls running every Sunday afternoon (4pm 6pm) to provide a relaxed social setting for girls just to enjoy playing together and bring their friends to: it has brought a good number of new members to the Club

In June 2022 the Club was the venue of the Progress Tour with £ 10,000 prize money to be equally split between men and women competitors Two weeks before the tour was due to start, there were about 45 entries for the men’s competition and about 3 for the women’s competition; it looked like the women’s competition would have to be cancelled Club chairman Kelvin van Hasselt worked tirelessly with Progress Tour organisers Barry Fulcher and Jieke Stroobant to publicise the women’s competition and we were all so grateful to Judy Murray’s tweet a few days beforehand promoting Cromer; the women’s competition went ahead with 15 entrants and provided an electrifying final between Joanna Garland (world ranked 380) and Alicia Dudeney Alicia had only heard about the event hours before entries closed showing the need for massive promotion of female tennis events to coaches, clubs, parents

The drive now at the Club is to establish girls only coaching groups to be led by Lisa Stickells, exemplifying two key ways Rallying Together has highlighted to increase female participation in tennis: First, it highlights the need for Girls Only coaching Groups for girls who prefer a girls only environment for learning tennis Second, it argues the need for more female coaches as role models for girls to look up to and relate to

The Club is working closely with the She Rallies Norfolk representative, the redoubtable Donna Andrew Donna was coach of the only Norfolk girls team to win the Lionel Cox trophy a trophy for Eastern Counties junior tennis players Donna believes passionately in Girls Only coaching groups and cites this as a reason for this success

Her view is that many girls often feel uncomfortable in mixed tennis coaching groups dominated by boys and therefore many don’t come to them Rallying Together states that at present girls currently account for only 30% of the competitive player base.

Donna supports the call to action in the Rallying Together section on Female Only sessions: “We know from insight and experience that some women and girls, particularly young girls, prefer being active just with other women and girls If these are not available, then they may be lost to our sport

Bebe King, of North Walsham, took full advantage at the "Summer Splash” gala held at the UEA Sports Park hosted by Gt Yarmouth Swimming Club The 11 year old entered seven events and medalled in all as the North Norfolk Vikings competed in respective age group categories

In her first event, Bebe demonstrated her all round ability on all strokes when she took a silver in the 100m Individual Medley with 1:41.8: This proved to be a fore runner for what was to come It was her powerful, nonchalant, longer strokes where she took full advantage This style of technique took her on to further success when she won the 25m freestyle in just 17 62 and victory again in the 25m breaststroke when she went 25 95 Her third

gold was the 25m backstroke when she touched in 21:89 and to conclude her seven medal haul, she came home first in 21 89 over the same distance on backstroke to clinch her fourth gold Reuben Seaman collected three more gold medals The 10 year old dominated the 100m Individual Medley finishing in 1:44 03 but in his 50m freestyle, he was pushed all the way by Charlie Pickering of Great Yarmouth, and it was only the electronic timing which could separate them as Reuben touched in 41 29 from Charlie's 41 43 respectively North Norfolk Vikings also won another hat trick of golds, this time through another 10 year old, Toby Caufield: all over 50m In the freestyle 45 01, backstroke 51 12 and breaststroke 1:00 15 However, Toby was not finished there he won a bronze in the 50m butterfly with his 59 60

continued to be achieved and two more followed by two more 10 year olds Lily Dear in the 50m freestyle with 37.63. when she defeated a field of eighteen swimmers and Grace Parker winning the 25m butterfly event in 20 65 in a close fingertip finish beating seven competitors. Meanwhile, both 12 year old Bailee Beighton and 13 year old Razvan Platon won consolation medals in respective events

At the conclusion of the gala, coach John Holden said: "I was delighted for the swimmers who gained just reward for all their hard work and commitment Every team member came in the top three at least twice Their technique is also improving as our younger swimmers are enjoying the experience of competing Vikings won 12 Golds, 10 Silvers and 4 Bronze Medals

Stamford BC visited on tour and in a very enjoyable match went away with a victory in a very close encounter Marrams won 2 of the 5 rinks but lost out on shot score by 75 to 78 Top rink was David S, Gordon G and David Be Another lovely, fun afternoon was had with the visit of Holwell Sports from Melton Mowbray in the final home friendly of the season Marrams won on 5 out of 6 rinks for a convincing 125 75 shot victory Best rink was Bob A, Colin S, Derek M and Roger O. The final friendly fixture of the season was on a lovely afternoon at Weybourne BC. We were beaten on 2 rinks and a final shot score of 37 41 Winning rink was David M, Stuart M and Neil P The final get together for a ‘spoon drive’ was attended by 16 members ‘New’ boys Allan H and Colin S excelled with top scores, but David H suffered at the other end!

Cromer Marrams competed in the Cawston Floodlit Trophy In the 1st round we played Aylsham on a lovely evening and won on 3 rinks out of 4 to progress with an 80 51 shot score Top rink was Stuart M, Paul C and John Br but also noteworthy was a hot shot 9 score on one end for Bob A, David H and Neil P However, fortunes changed in the next round against a very good Bawdeswell team with a 4 rink loss, 31 117 shot score

We were blessed with excellent weather for the club finals weekend It was good to see so many spectators who witnessed some very close and some not so close matches Congratulations to the

The club presentation evening was enjoyed by over 30 members A fulfilling buffet was followed by the presentation of trophies and prizes by Captain, Keith P President, Philip E, who then presented thankyou gifts to those members whose voluntary efforts have enabled the smooth running of the club

The green is now closed for the winter but next season there will be club matches afternoons, evenings and weekends So, there will be a game for you, at a time to suit and at a level of competitiveness to

suit Seven days a week you can also play a social ‘roll up’

If you are not sure you wish to be involved as a club member, then the green will be open for the public to play, as and when open Contact the number below and turn up with smooth soled, flat shoes, borrow a set of bowls and play for 1 hour or 2 We are already looking forward to welcoming you next season

In the meantime, if you wish to play (very!) short mat bowls with lots of fun, drink and biscuits for only £1 50, come along to the clubhouse every Wednesday afternoon at 2pm starting on 12th October and continuing throughout the winter months to April No previous experience or equipment required!
