A Note from the Editor

At last, the moment we have all been waiting for has arrived. We can cautiously come out of hiding and begin to meet up with one another, albeit at a safe distance. Eating out is allowed, weather permitting! How lovely to browse in a shop rather than on a computer screen. We start to look forward to things getting easier and enjoying more fresh air and, dare I say, fun. But we still have to play our part in making sure things follow a smooth the road out of lockdown. Don’t forget those second jabs, keep using those masks and stay a safe distance from others when out and about. We can’t afford to throw away all our hard work now. This summer will still be different to normal, but lots of events are being planned to take place in innovative ways with our safety in mind and I’m sure we can all find ways to enjoy our newfound freedom and stay safe at the same time. Enjoy your April magazine. Keep safe and well.

News from The Venue

Since our last news back in early March, we have continued to be very busy improving The Venue, with more decorative work to finish the new wonderful pelmet lighting in the main hall which is ideal when you want more atmosphere rather than the central bright lights. At the end of March, we had Cooks Electrical Services back in to replace some of the old 1970’s electrical systems which although safe, was something we knew we had to replace to remain as up to date as possible. Opening that cupboard now reminds me of the Starship Enterprise! We have now finished the Citizens Advice suite of offices which look beautiful, and as very valued members of the Venue family we are so pleased to have been able to complete this for them. We are excited to be re-opening to some user groups again from 12th April and as mentioned previously, Paula Matthams and The Calm Zone will be back in business offering massage therapy. Our newest resident user Helena Byrne of Perle Counselling opens her doors for the first time offering ‘Gestalt’ mental health therapy. Monica Clare continues to operate offering her special chiropody/podiatry service. Amplifon is back each Thursday with their hearing aid service. We also welcome for the first time; certified infant massage instructor Georgina Astley and her Calm Baby Massage service and Anna Hallard with Hartbeeps Classes for babies and toddlers offering: Music, Puppets, Laughter and Fun. Paul Pretty’s Tsunami Martial Arts Karate & Thai Chi returns for the kids initially each Friday during the term time. All the user groups are on our website at www.thevenueholt.com so please do have a look at calendar and click on the different links to read up more on each user group. In this strange season, it will be just wonderful to welcome people back into the Venue, albeit gradually and with all the necessary precautions. We are hopeful that by the summer, we will again be buzzing away with lots of great activities and groups for you all to participate in and enjoy! Carolyn Burn

County Councillor News

from County Councillor Sarah Butikofer sarah.butikofer.cllr@norfolk.gov.uk or 07968 897235 Dear Reader, I hope you all enjoyed the Easter break and were able to enjoy some of those first long-awaited tentative steps out of lockdown. There is still a long road ahead but let’s hope things are finally moving in the right direction.

As we do open up, I would seek to reassure you that everything is being done that can be to deal with what we anticipate will be a bumper year for people wanting to ‘staycation’. For example, our ‘fogging’ programme of high contact areas will continue and plans for larger rubbish bins with a more frequent emptying service are being put in place. We are also looking at further carparking provision, and signage to remind people about the importance of following the countryside code when visiting. There is a delicate balance to be struck between helping our businesses to be as successful as possible, and welcoming large numbers of visitors to our home.

Lost World - Make a Shilling

Les Kinsley’s recollections continued with help from Mr Stanley Vardigan aka Squeaker, recorded by Heather Bowes. Mr Eke at the garage (the grandad of the present Ekes) had made a bicycle. It was a beauty, a blue and yellow racer, and I was so keen to get it. I did not have much money, but he offered to let me have it and pay for it so much a week. I made a little trailer for the bike and used it to deliver my Mother’s washing at a penny per load. One of the neighbours lent me his billy goat. I made a cart for him to pull with a home- made harness. Then I offered the local children rides round the meadow in the cart for sixpence a go. My best earner however was rabbits. I had become really good at trapping them. The local butcher asked me if I could find him a few. He regretted his request a bit though as I caught so many he could not cope with them all! He had to take them to Aylsham Market in the end. My last profitable job as a boy was to dig allotments for the railway workers. Each one earned me the huge sum of one shilling (5p) Mr Eke got his money and I had that bike a long time. We say ‘a boy is worth half a man’, and when I started to work for the same local farmer as my Father, I was paid eleven shilling and twopence halfpenny per week (just short of 60p). My first job was scaring the birds from the crops on a forty-acre field up where Hillside and the Lomax estate are now. I made a rattle of the sort you used to take to football and ran round the field in the daylight hours. Five shillings of this wage went to my Mother for my keep and the rest I spent on cigarettes, sweets and eventually beer. My friend Stanley Vardigan started work as an apprentice for Mr Beckett who owned a carpentry business. He loved the work, but it was 1938, and only a year after he began, the war started. All Mr Becket’s men were called up and the business folded. Stanley ended up working with his father as a cobbler.

THE ART OF NATURAL CLEANING

What scents bring back memories of your grandparents’ home? For me, it’s Carbolic Soap that instantly reminds me of my Nan’s kitchen! The big green bar would sit next to the scrubbing board in the lean-to, which also housed the outside loo and tin bath hanging on the wall.

Parkside Garage 50 Year Anniversary

As a young couple starting on life’s journey John and Lynda Collins seized the opportunity to buy a rundown filling station and garage at Thursford, near Fakenham, in April 1971. Of course this would not have been possible without the help of family. With all their savings spent they worked 7 days a week to get established and build a reputation of expertise in car mechanics, not to mention the ‘personal touch’ that you get from a family business run with pride. This was no easy task with a 3-year-old son and another baby on the way and none of the ‘mod cons’ that we are accustomed to these days. John soon got a good name for his skill in MOT testing and also carrying out Mot’s for the General Post Office vehicles in Fakenham. To this day John is up to date on his qualifications to carry out MOT’s and is the one of the longest serving MOT testers in the country. As the years moved on and car technology advanced, their son Andrew joined the family business when he left school in 1984. His father taught him the trade and Andrew brought new and modern ideas and innovations including expertise in car electronics with outstanding awards from BOSCH. The business continues to flourish as their grandson Sam completed his apprenticeship in motor engineering and joined them. The business continues to move with the times and is now an approved RAC repair garage. The garage is still a filling station, one of the few independent ones left in the UK supplying high quality GULF brand fuel at locally competitive prices. Lynda and John would like to thank all past and present customers on the 50th anniversary of Parkside garage.

Coming from a ‘modern’ council house in the 60s, it took me a long while to realise Nan didn’t have an inside bathroom in her Victorian terrace. Her lifestyle would now be considered ‘green’… but she wouldn’t have had any other choices. What aromas will children today associate with their parents’ and grandparents’ homes when they look back, and will they consider their lifestyle to be eco-friendly? In these pandemic times, the overarching aroma is probably disinfectant! However, why not try some more natural cleaning techniques?

Bicarbonate of soda mixed with natural lemon juice or lemon essential oil* makes a lovely, aromatic kitchen cleaner. Most citrus oils plus eucalyptus, pine and lavender essential oils have excellent cleaning qualities and enhance your home’s natural ambiance. You can also create some more uplifting aromas with our gorgeously scented St Eval Candles. For more natural recipe ideas, visit our website at dapperandgreen.co.uk. Also available from our Melton Constable shop are FILL Eco Laundry home and body products – simply buy your bottle once and then top up every time it's empty. It’s a great way to reduce your plastic waste and show your commitment to the environment. Angela Nubbert is the owner of Eco Laundry company Dapper and Green and is a qualified aromatherapist.

* Be careful when using essential oils and check instructions before use.

Postal Voting: NNDC is taking great safety care at polling stations for the 6 May elections but for extra care of your health and that of polling station staff consider a postal vote go to postalvotes@northnorfolk.gov.uk or 01263 513811. Deadline for postal votes 20 April, for proxy votes 27 April. If COVID illness will interfere with your ability to vote check the website or phone number shown above.

Project Gigabit: For those properties still struggling to obtain satisfactory broadband: For me this is the most exciting news regarding broadband since ‘Better Broadband for Norfolk’ came onto the scene. Norfolk is listed amongst the first counties to benefit from this new tranche of funding for gigabit fibre deployment. The project will target properties that are not expected to benefit from suppliers own commercial investment in Gigabit capable infrastructure, thought to be around 35% of Norfolk properties. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/government-launches-new-5bnproject-gigabit

Remote meetings: There is a one-day hearing on Wednesday 21 April for the court to determine the Hertfordshire County Council, Lawyers in Local Government, and the Association of Democratic Services Officers application for a declaration in relation to councils already having powers needed to hold remote meetings. This is in response to the Government’s announcement that usage of remote council meetings across the local government sector cannot be extended. (I wonder if I have it wrong that the Government, as opposed to local government holding remote meetings, is continuing with remote meetings.)

Norfolk Autism Partnership Board’s website: For a better understanding of Autism, Norfolk County Council has co-produced, designed, and created an Autism Awareness e-learning programme with the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation and the Norfolk All Age Autism Partnership Board. The eLearning was developed to be shared to spread awareness and understanding around Norfolk and beyond. (https://www.norfolkautismpartnership.org.uk/autism-awareness/)

Watch Out – There’s Live music about!

COVID-19 Information: With so many changes having taken place best to check the following websites which, as you will know, are reliable and will have been updated: Information on the government’s road map out of lockdown is available at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/local-restriction-tiers-what-you-need-toknow www.norfolk.gov.uk/coronavirus: this site includes local services as well as the latest regulations for Norfolk and reference to many if not all of the government schemes www.gov.uk/coronavirus: all the government schemes are to be found on this site.

As always, my admiration of those who are helping others, often without acknowledgement – so from me to you - thank you.

Dealing with estate debts By Anna French,

An insolvent estate

Chartered Legal Executive,

If you are an executor of an estate, your duties involve not only dealing with the assets of the deceased, but also any debts that have been left behind. Any estate may have debts, even if the deceased was wealthy – it is reported that Michael Jackson died with around $500 million worth of debt. It is the duty of the executors to make sure debts are repaid.

Impact of debts on beneficiaries

Naturally, if an estate includes debts, this will reduce the amount that is available for distribution to the beneficiaries. If the estate is solvent, there will be sufficient funds to pay all debts, but the amount the beneficiaries receive will be reduced. If the estate is insolvent and the debts outweigh the assets, then the beneficiaries will not receive anything. As an executor you should keep the beneficiaries informed and manage their expectations about what they will inherit.

For a solvent estate

Once estate debts have been paid, you will need to think about the beneficiaries. A legal procedure called abatement applies wherever assets are insufficient to pay all the legacies in full. If this is the case, the residuary beneficiaries will not receive anything, as the payment of legacies takes priority over the residue of the estate. A ‘residuary beneficiary’ is a beneficiary who has been left a percentage of what's left over in the estate after all legacies (specific gifts and sums of money to named individuals) have been distributed and all debts and expenses have been settled. For example, you might leave £10,000 to your niece and an antique vase to your best friend (legacies) and leave your residuary estate, which could include your property, to your partner.

If an estate is insolvent, the available assets are insufficient to pay all the debts of the deceased. As executor, you must obtain full details of all those debts. You should also consider placing statutory notices to creditors in a local newspaper and the London Gazette. This would provide protection if any further unknown creditors come forward in the future. When dealing with an insolvent estate, you need to follow a strict order for paying debts. This order is set out in law and it is important that you understand the difference between the types of debt as well as the order itself. Personal debt cannot normally be inherited, providing the debt was incurred in the sole name of the deceased. But there are exceptions, such as if the debt was guaranteed by a third party or if the deceased had gifted money close to their death which could be seen as an attempt to avoid payment to creditors from the estate.

If you are worried about any aspect of an estate for which you have been asked to act as executor or administrator, we can offer you expert assistance, whether you are yet to begin the process or are already well on your way. Call 01263 712835 and ask to speak to someone in our private client department.

May Day Traditions

In England a young tree would be felled and erected to dance around in celebration of imminent summer. In Scotland and Ireland the festival of Beltane or Day of Fire, a large bonfire is built and danced around. Children's diabetic check-up service opens in Cromer

Thanks to NNUH Specialist Children’s Diabetes Nurses and the Cromer outpatient team, families living in and around Cromer will no longer have to travel to Norwich for one of their routine condition check appointments. As well as an annual check-up, children with diabetes have to have their overall glucose levels checked every three months. Until recently this involved up to a 50-mile round trip for some families from the coastal town, and surrounding area, to NNUH for the test, which takes only a few minutes. The face-to-face test has always been carried out by NNUH health care assistants (HCAs) in a routine clinic appointment but because of the Covid-19 pandemic that in-person contact was reduced. A drive through service was created at NNUH so that children could extend their arm out of their car window, have the finger-prick test and wait for confirmation of a result.

Secret Centre Lemon Cupcakes

Now that we are allowed to meet up with friends in the garden and we have hopefully honed our baking skills over lockdown, here is a lovely recipe to go along with that cup of tea and a natter. Whenever I make these, people are very impressed with them and yet they are so easy and quick to make. Even if your piping skills are a little hit and miss, as Delia says, if good ingredients go into a cake it can’t help but taste delicious.

Ingredients

6oz/170g self-raising flour 6oz/170g caster sugar 6oz/170g softened butter 1.5 tsp baking powder 3 large free-range eggs Grated zest 2 large lemons 1.5 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 jar of good lemon curd

Outstanding Companion-Based Care

Our aim is to make you look forward to our visit, be it a cup of tea and a natter, a shopping trip or a fantastic day out. We offer tailor-made companionship care packages to cover all your companionship and socialising needs. Our Happy Companions are fully trained, vetted and have many years Ensuring you feel socially engaged, maintain a great of experience working within the care sector. feeling of wellbeing and never lonely or isolated.

For the buttercream

8oz/225g icing sugar 3.5 oz/100g softened butter 2 tsp lemon juice Lemon jelly decorations or yellow sprinkles to decorate if desired

Senior Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse, Suzanne Lee, wanted to set up a local service out of Cromer Hospital, so has developed a similar service there too. Training was arranged by the NNUH diabetes nurses to enable the clinic to be run by the outpatient nurses in Cromer. Suzanne said: “We wanted to create a local service similar to that which we were Cromer Hospital Diabetes Team running at the N&N. We did the training four months ago and made sure it was embedded and that staff were fully confident in running a clinic so the Cromer team can run this independently.” Since then, the team has run three clinics. Suzanne said: “I am really pleased with how teams from both hospitals have worked so well together to set up this service. This really is so much better for our patients in North Norfolk.” Mum of two, Heidi Skillen, from Cromer, has benefited from the clinics now working out of her local hospital. Before and during the pandemic she would have to take her daughter Ava, 12, out of Cromer Academy, for the majority of the day to take her to NNUH for her check-ups – a situation Ava found stressful. Heidi also has a nine-year-old son, Harry, who needed to make the journey as well as he could not be left with anyone during lockdown.

Sheringham RNLI Shop Re-opens

The RNLI Shop in Sheringham High Street will open again on the 12th of April. Carolyn Price, the volunteer manager, is much looking forward to welcoming back her volunteer colleagues and the public. Thanks to the support of local people and visitors, last year the shop was top of all the RNLI shops in the UK. It has now been fully re-stocked with the new season's range of RNLI products, and everyone is raring to go. The RNLI is a national charity that relies wholly on public subscription. The RNLI has maintained a lifeboat in Sheringham continuously since 1867. It is a proud tradition. All in the Sheringham RNLI community are volunteers, be they shop workers, boat crew, shore crew or administrators. All, in equal measure, give their time to the cause of saving lives. There is a role for everybody. New volunteers of all ages over 16 are always needed and new volunteers to join our very successful shop staff are particularly needed as summer approaches. For further information, do call into the High Street Shop once it opens. You will be made very welcome. Phil Hawes Chairman RNLI Sheringham

Dear friends, In the church’s calendar Eastertide lasts for 50 glorious days. From the day of the resurrection of Jesus, through to his ascension into heaven and onto the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Eastertide is a season of celebration and hope. A celebration of the victory Christ has won over death and the hope of good things to come. This Eastertide is needed more than ever as we look forward to a time when covid restrictions will be lifted and we can enjoy the summer months with family and friends. After being denied the ability to gather together in church last Easter it was a real joy to have a congregation back in church this year, although much depleted because of social distancing. Those unable to be physically present were able join in via our YouTube channel, which continues to gain more and more views. On Easter day members of our congregations were invited to take home some sunflower seeds to plant as a reminder of the resurrection of Jesus and the risen life we are invited to live. Easter eggs were in short supply, but a sunflower seed can be used to good effect to symbolize Easter. At first glance a sunflower seed looks quite lifeless and dead, but if planted in the earth and given time it will send up a new shoot, which will grow into a tall stem with leaves, crowned with an enormous and spectacular flower. A flower which always turn its face to the sun and produces hundreds of further seeds. Like a seed buried in the ground, Jesus rose to new life which he shares with us. To live the risen life is to be like a sunflower. Our lives are to be rooted in Christ Jesus, our faces need to be continually turned towards the sun that never sets, the risen Christ, in order that we may grow to be the people he intends us to be, and that we might know the joy of his risen life and bear fruit in plenty. I threw down a challenge to the congregation that as I went about the parish this summer, I wanted to see sunflowers growing in their front gardens as a reminder of this glorious Eastertide and I promised a prize for the tallest flower. Why not take up the challenge? It would be wonderful to see the parish and beyond, ablaze with the bright yellow of sunflowers! A symbol of hope and joy! With my prayers for a truly blessed and joyous Eastertide. Fr. Saving Stamps

Thank You

Dear Jo, Could I once again ask readers of Sheringham Independent and Holt Chronicle to continue saving their stamps for me which I send onto many charities. Thank you for those who have sent me theirs so far. These charities need as much support especially through this period of COVID.

Dear Jo, Would you be kind enough to say an enormous thank you to everyone who has supported Mick’s Donkey Sanctuary Memorial Fund in memory of my beloved husband. My gentle husband was a lovely man and £710.00 was sent in his memory to the donkey sanctuary in Devon along with various anonymous amounts. He would love the idea that a lthough friends were unable to attend his funeral, they gave the donkeys a feast through their generosity.

Please send them to: -

Local Norfolk based charities, Wells Community Hospital and Norfolk Clubhouse, join forces to tackle problems at the heart of Norfolk Communities

Wells Community Hospital based in Wells, North Norfolk and Norfolk Clubhouse, a charitable social enterprise based in Norwich with hubs in Norfolk are working together to support members of communities in Norfolk experiencing the effects of COVID-19 in diverse ways. FRIENDLY & RELIABLE - LOCAL & LONG DISTANCE

Serving our customers in North Norfolk and beyond since 1999

Hello, I am Katie, a Foot Health Practioner. I take appointments for home visits in Wells, Fakenham, Holt, Sheringham and their surrounding villages. This is a valuable service to patients who are primarily housebound or in rural villages with little means of transport.

Dr. Hanne Homer, Clin.Psy.D. PostGrad Clin Neuropsychology, Chartered Clinical Psychologist In these times of the Coronavirus Pandemic, fear and low mood have become more visible and prevalent. Increased levels of anxiety, depression and stress have been reported since the first lock-down in March 2020 (British Medical Journal 2021).

Fear caused by the lack of positive emotional experiences emanating from in vivo or ‘real’ social interactions, a pause or complete loss of our usual work and study roles and ambitions, a loss in terms of being able to engage with our familiar social communities, fear for our livelihoods and fear for our future. No wonder that our mental health is under extreme pressure. Fear/anxiety and low mood are all examples of negative emotions, they are also part of being a human. We cannot have happiness, contentment and positive emotions without the negatives - that is just the principle of balance, which signify the natural life of which we are part. Things fluctuate and things change. Where it becomes problematic is when these negative emotions become chronic. When this happens, we become mentally and physically unwell - the body starts to ‘say no’!

Psychotherapy can be crucial in preventing this chronicity from happening and can be life changing. It can liberate us from the restraints that our fears place upon our lives and lift us out of a narrow ‘box’ of negative thinking and emotions to learn to be part of a wider and more free space around us. It can teach us balance - to become aware of our weaknesses, appreciate where these originate from and in time to learn to acknowledge these. Psychotherapy can develop insight into the fluctuating nature of negative thoughts and emotions and how not to become stuck in these and teach us to become more adept to read and to listen to the intelligence within our body. Psychotherapy can help put you on this path, with benefits to your quality life and overall health. Hanne can be contacted through the Holt Consulting rooms for more information, or to discuss anything in confidence, Tel. 01263 711712.

Acupuncture at Holt Holistic Centre

For acupuncturists there is a real sense that spring is bringing more than a flourish of growth with spring flowers and blossom but also a feeling that we are getting closer to a sort of normality in our practices. To have had to stop treating our clients was an enormous blow and for some of our patients the return of their health issues and their pain. Being able to treat people in our practices again has been a cautious and slow process ensuring the safety of both client and practitioner is so essential. Early on our profession worked towards gaining the governments recognition of how important it was to continue access to acupuncture services for the health of so many people, this recognition has enabled us to open our clinics again and to redevelop our practices in a covid safe way. My room has changed no soft furnishings or towels on the coaches or to snuggle under (bring your own if you want one) less available appointments to allow 15 minutes for the room to ventilate between clients and I am hidden behind my mask. The future for us acupuncturists will be in the rise in seeing issues such as painful joint conditions because of longer hospital waits and post covid health issues, along with all the other conditions we treat. I am blessed knowing I cannot cure everybody, but I can help many. Alison Courtney Acupuncturist Email alisoncourtney3@gmail.com Mobile 07790264515 Member acupuncture society

Get your pet “summer ready” with Toll Barn Vets

ics are free and available for dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. If you are concerned about visiting the practice then we are also able to provide these appointments via telephone and video. To book an appointment with our friendly team please give us a call on 01692 407126.

With the recent Lockdowns many of our pets have gained a few extra pounds but don’t worry – Toll Barn Vets is here to help! Exercising is a great way of getting your pet active and also a great way of bonding with your pet. Regular exercise helps keep the heart and lungs healthy, build muscle, maintain a healthy weight and provide mental stimulation. Don’t Huwie forget exercise is not only for our canine pets; cats can be encouraged to exercise by playing with toys or using “treat balls” to give them their usual food ration, whilst rabbits can be encouraged to exercise with foraging games.

Ruby and Georgie

We understand it can be really difficult to monitor our pets weight and resist those appealing eyes asking for treats however, research from the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA) suggests 92% of owners were unaware that their pet was an unhealthy weight. This is important because as little as 20% extra weight can significantly increase the risk of diabetes, osteoarthritis, heart disease, respiratory disease and certain cancers. Pets, much like humans, come in many different shapes and sizes and relying on numbers can be dangerous. When assessing a pets weight it is not just the number on the scales which is important. It is equally as important to use a body condition score technique rather than just relying on the numbers. It is far better to use a body condition score which assesses characteristics such as ease of feeling the ribs and waistline to determine your pets ideal weight.

We understand how time consuming and difficult it can be to help your pet achieve their target weight and even to work out if your pet needs to work on their waistline. Our friendly team of veterinary nurses are offering free of charge nutrition clinics for our patients which include body condition scoring, advice on diets and feeding as well as general health and exercise advice depending on your pets condition. The building of a dedicated centre for STEAM subjects disrupts the established narrative that young people must choose between science and the arts at an early stage of their life. By teaching these subjects side by side, pupils will begin to see how knowledge gained from one discipline can be used in a New Dyson building under creative way in another. Creativity and construction original thinking have always been the cornerstones of a Gresham’s education; the Dyson Building will establish state-of-the-art facilities to see this continue into the mid-21st century.

Topping out for new Dyson Building at Gresham’s School

A topping out ceremony has been held for the much-anticipated Dyson Building at Gresham’s School. Due to open in September 2021, the new Centre for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education was made possible by a generous donation from Sir James Dyson who attended the school from 1956 to 1965.

Douglas Robb, Gresham’s Headmaster, said, “As Sir James himself would say engineers are people who look at problems and find solutions. We believe it’s important that young people are given the opportunity to get hands on with real projects, learn through trial and error and find solutions. Sir James’ generosity has allowed us to build a space where problem solving is at the heart of our educational thinking. The Dyson Building will act as catalyst to encourage young people to think laterally, work collaboratively and ultimately learn from their failures.”

The topping out ceremony, which took place on the rooftop of the Dyson Building, is traditionally held when the last beam (or its equivalent) is placed atop a structure during its construction. To mark this milestone, Michael Goff, Chairman of Governors at Gresham’s, ceremoniously poured a beer over the roof and made a short speech to the assembled group which included representatives from Gresham’s, the main contractor Kier, architects Wilkinson Eyre and the Daniel Connal Partnership. Dennis Cotton, Operations Director at Kier, said, “Kier is proud to be delivering, in collaboration with Gresham’s, a building that will enhance pupils’ learning for generations to come.”

Working closely with the James Dyson Foundation, Gresham’s hopes the building will become a hub for STEAM education in Norfolk.

A state-of-the-art structure at the heart of the school campus, the Dyson Building spans 4000m² of space and will create a contemporary arts and science teaching facility incorporating classrooms, laboratories, workshops and flexible use open plan common areas. The striking, open, light steel structure has been designed to blend sympathetically with the surrounding buildings. With exposed structure and services, a principle behind the design is for pupils to be able to see how the building functions rather than concealing its workings behind ceilings and linings.

Volunteers wanted. Could you be an everyday hero?

You don’t need to be another Bear Grills to volunteer with the Scouts. Afterall we’ve got one of those and he does a great job. What we need now are Smilers and Inspirers, Activity Planners and Zoomers – all round team players and fun lovers, to support our young people. If you want to make a difference to how our local youngsters grow up and develop into the best of tomorrows citizens; while having fun at the same time, then think about helping at your local Scout Group. The good news is you shape what you do and decide how much time you give. Scouts happens when a lot of us give a little (and no, you don’t have to be a Scout or outdoors expert to volunteer). Scouts is needed now more than ever. The pandemic has hit our young people hard – with two thirds saying it has impacted on their mental health. Having people positive role models to guide the way and give that extra bit of encouragement is so important in times like these. We help young people step up, speak and find their place in the world. We help them gain skills for life.

Three great reasons to volunteer: • You’ll share your skills and experience with young people, while developing yourself. • You’ll have fun and meet new people in your area. • You’ll inspire a generation (and they’ll never forget it). What to expect: • A warm welcome. • Flexibility to get involved in a way that works for you. • Easy access to training and resources online. • Plenty of support and a great team. Whether you join us to directly support young people, or behind the scenes, as a volunteer manager, treasurer or fundraiser, we’ll match you with a role that suits the skills you have to share and those you'd like to gain. No two weeks are the same, but the impact you make is always great. To find out more about how you could get involved with your local Scout Group email 1stholtscouts@gmail.com or visit our website https://www.1stholt.org.uk and fill in the contact form or find us on twitter @HoltScouts.

Age Concern (North Norfolk) continues to provide home-cooked lunches, delivered to older members of our local community. These meals are significantly subsidised and made possible through grants from local fund providers. The Trustees, Staff and Volunteers are grateful for this support, which has ensured we have been able to keep our Staff productively employed during this pandemic even though we had to temporarily close the Day Centre in Cremer Street to Client visits. We also wish to thank our loyal Clients whom we continue to support and hope that soon we will all be able to meet up at the Day Centre for lunch, activities and a chat. It seems a long time since the Centre was able to operate at full capacity but with vaccinations progressing well and cases reducing week by week, there does seem to be a light at the end of what has been a very long and difficulty tunnel.

We all look forward with hope, that soon we will be able to welcome you back. So look out for information about when we can re-open and if you feel that ‘Meals on Heels’ or a Befriending call may be beneficial for you or a loved one, then please phone Alison on 01263 821188 or email ageconcernad@gmail.com and she will make the necessary arrangements and advise you of Day Centre activities, prices and dates. So until we are able to be together again, keep safe, stay well and we look forward to meeting up with you all, very soon.

One of the marvelous things about community is that it enables us to welcome and help people in a way we couldn't as individuals. Jean Vanier

Cromer Minor Injuries Unit reopens

Cromer Minor Injuries Unit is reopened on Monday 29 March as part of the restoration of services at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

It comes after the Cromer team, including ten Emergency Nurse Practitioners, were redeployed to support the Emergency Department at NNUH during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic in January. Alice Richardson, Emergency Department Matron, praised the MIU team for their support and flexibility during the most challenging period of the pandemic.

“It has been amazing to have the Cromer MIU team with us to cover all our Emergency Nurse Practitioner service and we have not had to supply a doctor to the minor injuries area at NNUH. They have also been helping with triage and initial assessment. They have been working in their scope of practice working in a different environment and have adapted really well. They are all really excited to be getting back to Cromer and reopening the MIU,” she said.

Cromer MIU, in Mill Road, Cromer will be open seven days a week and its usual hours of 8am to 7.45pm from Monday 29 March. If you are unsure about whether Cromer MIU is the appropriate place for your healthcare needs, please call 01603 646230.

The Minor Injuries Unit at Cromer can deal with: • Minor head injuries (with no loss of consciousness) • Simple wounds • Simple eye conditions, foreign body, corneal abrasions • Minor burns • Soft tissue injury • Bites and stings, with no associated complications, or acute reaction • Simple fractures • Fingers that may be broken or dislocated

Neonicotinoid – Update!

www.hindringhamhall.org

Further to my article published in several North Norfolk periodicals last month which outlined the Government’s removal of the ban on neonicotinoids, I can now offer the following update.

Lyles House Residential Care Home

The UK Government banned bee-killing pesticides called neonicotinoids in 2018. At that time they resisted industry pressure to make any exceptions to the ban. This changed earlier this year when the Government allowed sugar beet producers in England to once again use seeds treated with the highly toxic neonic thiamethoxam on an emergency basis.

Hindolveston (between Fakenham & Holt)

Vacancies

Full & Part Time Care Assistants & Night Assistants

There is a stack of scientific evidence, including from the Government’s own scientific advisors, that this class of pesticide are extremely hazardous to bees and other pollinators. Since this scientific advice was given to Government, it has emerged that they are also damaging to animals living in our water courses into which they leach. Insects play a vital role in the food chain – it is estimated that around 30% of the food we eat relies on pollination - mainly by bees.

I wrote last month to declare by disappointment that these damaging chemicals can once again be used in England even though it was under emergency circumstances. I am delighted and relieved to report that after the cold snap we all experienced in February, that the use of these nasty chemicals will not be needed this year. The cold weather has meant that the risk to sugar beet has diminished to a level below which the Government will not now authorise neonicotinoid use under its ‘emergency derogation’ to sugar beet farmers in 2021.

It is important to note however, that this is only a stay of execution. It does not change the underlying issue - that neonicotinoid use could be allowed in the future. Whilst it is important to support the farming community and to protect sugar beet production – it is crucial that longer-term, more sustainable solutions are found that don’t rely upon dangerous chemicals which are proven to harm our native bees and pollinators. I shall be watching closely for the Government’s next move on this issue. Cllr Nigel Lloyd, North Norfolk District Council, Holt Road, Cromer. NR279EN

Weybourne Horticultural Show

( [ W U D + D Q G V

It has been a very difficult and disappointing year for those of us who organise and run local community events. With the initial lockdown in early 2020 and subsequent various stages of area restrictions it was impossible to stage any kind of event with certainty and safely.

(VWDEOLVKHG

3URYLGHUV RI +RPH &DUH LQ 1RUIRON

This year, 2021, has started in a similar vein, with uncertainty as to when and what activities will be allowed, particularly for such events as our Show. The show requires a large amount of and organisation and expenditure, and support from the community. So with this in mind the Show Committee have decided that it will not be possible to stage the Show this year. Many people will be very disappointed at this, the Show had become a Summer Calendar event, but with the uncertainty of the current time, we really had no choice. The Committee will reconvene in early 2022 to decide on the way forward.

Hello, my name is Sarah Bütikofer, and I am standing for re-election as your County Councillor for Holt Division, at the elections on the 6th of May.

I was first elected as your County Councillor for the Holt Division in May 2017, as well as representing the people of Holt the Division includes the villages of Cley, Weybourne, Salthouse, Kelling and High Kelling, Matlask, Bessingham, Metton, Sustead and of course Aylmerton which I am lucky to call home.

What I Have Done? I have served on the Communities Committee and the Police and Crime Panel for Norfolk. Highways – I have worked continuously to improve road safety, purchasing speed equipment for our communities, salt bins for untreated roads and changed parking orders to improve safety for residents. This is a work in progress and there is always more to do. I am currently trying to secure funding for a speed camera for Holt. Fire Service – I fought to protect the independence of our superb Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service when its autonomy was threatened by the Police and Crime Commissioner. I proposed a motion at Full Council which received cross party support, and then worked with all other parties to secure its future. Mobile Libraries – I led a campaign to protect our mobile library service to rural villages. This service provides so much than a basic service to some of our most vulnerable residents. Of course, to many of you the most important service your Councillor provides is assisting you with your personal casework, and over the last four years I have handled almost 1000 pieces of casework, and attended over 350 Parish Council meetings. What will I do? Social Care – We need to be doing so much more for residents needing social care support. They deserve a service they can rely on, a service that delivers quality care and peace of mind for those in need and their family. I will work with anyone that brings forward proposals to drive service improvement. Education – Continue to work with the Friends of Holt Hall to secure its future for outdoor learning. Most importantly I will continue to listen to your concerns and work with you to address the issues important to you and your communities. I believe we need to do politics differently more collaboratively, and ensure it reflects the strong community spirit seen each and every day here. As always if I can be of help and assistance between now and the elections in May, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. It has been my privilege and pleasure to represent you for the last four years, and I thank you for your support.

All proceeds are going to the East Anglian Air Ambulance and with monies still coming in, the amount at the time of release stands at £1,792.00.

Judith’s variety of poles, Jump 4 Joy cross country jumps, Oxnead’s cross country and show jumps, proved enjoyable and challenging. The achievement of the day became the EAAA bright yellow Helicopter with rota blade. A very big thank you goes to Broadland Chiropractic Clinics and GJL Animal Feeds for the Cash Prize Draw, Stephen Britten Farriery for a pot

The Grove Cromer - nearly there!

As I sit writing this the hail has ceased and the April sun is shining brightly; we've just been shovelling thirty tonnes of new gravel around our front drive to get ready for reopening. Although this last year has been tremendously tough for the hospitality industry, us Cromer folk are resilient and - hopefully - the town has weathered yet another storm and is standing by to receive all the lovely visitors we see each year. We have a new project that will be opening in May. Sundown is our second restaurant at the Grove; two giant tipis put together to provide seating for up to 100, all enjoying hand made, stone-based pizzas, seafood platters and Norfolk tapas. It's really exciting and we look forward to welcoming you all in a few weeks' time. And of course our double AA Rosette a la carte restaurant is still going strong, together with afternoon teas on our new terrace. So please do come and see us this summer! Securing a Future for Holt Hall

undertake due diligence, seek investors, develop productive partnerships and develop a business plan. We are excited to attract champions, influencers, network-connectors, advocates and donors and professional support.

‘Securing a future’ is the bold vision of the Friends of Holt Hall (FOHH) as we seek to build on the legacy of educational experience in North Norfolk over the last 70 years. We are delighted that the hall and its surrounding extensive natural habitat was registered by North Norfolk District Council as an Asset of Community Value (ACV) earlier this year. Working together with the local community, with individuals, specialists and those with a passion for the environment, we hope to achieve our goal of establishing a self-sufficient and forward-looking asset for children, young people and the community of North and the whole Norfolk.

Norfolk naturalist and writer Nick Acheson said, “Friends of Holt Hall are doing great work to keep Holt Hall as a centre for outdoor learning for young and old alike. But they need all the community support they can get. If you value outdoor learning and would like to help FOHH in their ambitious plan, please follow them on social media, visit their new website and consider donating to their seed fund.” In the longer term we need funding to adapt our mission to help children and young people access outstanding outdoor, environmental and green revolution experiences in Norfolk and our region. So, our third announcement today is for our new website https://fohhnorfolk.org/ This will keep our our communities and supporters up to date with news and developments short and longer term. Chair of Trustees, Tom Green said:

We are today announcing that we have now expressed interest as a Community Interest Group to be regarded as a potential bidder under the ACV provisions of the Localism Act.

We understand this should trigger the full moratorium period meaning the Study Centre land and buildings cannot be offered or sold on the open market for 6 months from 26th January 2020.

“During the Covid pandemic the mental health and well-being of many Norfolk children has been adversely affected. Repeated lockdowns have significantly reduced their opportunities for outdoor learning and the benefits of being in nature. The need for Centres like Holt Hall is greater than ever. I am proud to launch our new website and fundraiser. These are important tools to secure the legacy of the excellent outdoor learning offered at Holt Hall over many decades.”

A new community-focused venture could continue with partners to enable visits to the Centre, where children and young people can acquire a better appreciation of the environment, outdoor living, an awareness of nature, and working together on tackling climate change. We know from 70 years’ experience that visitors to the Centre, particularly those from more urban and deprived communities, will develop self-confidence, resilience, well-being and love of the natural world of which we are a part. A project to realise our vision and acquire and operate the site will need a “war chest of funding”. We launch today on Crowdfunder a fundraising campaign on the Internet:

Marital agreements

Marital agreements, known as pre-nuptial or post-nuptial agreements, are often thought to be something that the rich and famous enter into to protect their wealth. They are often reported on the front of various tabloid newspapers. However, they are becoming increasingly popular among clients from all walks of life wishing to achieve certainty and fairness in the event that they divorce in the future. They are particularly useful where clients are marrying for the second time, or later in life, and there may be inheritance that they wish to protect for the benefit of their children. A marital agreement, which can be entered into before marriage, or after marriage, is simply a written agreement between a couple, which sets out how they intend their finances to be arranged during the marriage, and in the unfortunate event their marriage comes to an end. Whilst it can be difficult to contemplate the end of your marriage, before it has even begun, it is very sensible to do so and is likely to decrease the changes of separation as the marriage will be based on openness and honesty at the outset - isn't that romantic!

by Kate Jackson Family Law Expert

An agreement provides certainty as to the future, and if the worst does happen, you will save a lot of money and time if there if a proper agreement in place. Following the Supreme Court decision in Radmacher v Granatino [2010] UKSC 42 in October 2010, the courts in England and Wales will uphold a marital agreement that is freely entered into by both parties with a full appreciation of its implications, unless in the circumstances it would not be fair to uphold the agreement. Provided that test is met, the court will give effect to a marital agreement, so you should expect to be held to its terms if you decide to enter in to the agreement. It is essential that both parties receive independent legal advice.

We offer expert advice on pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements. Every case is different, and we can give you bespoke advice at the early stages of thinking about entering into agreement, and we can help you to negotiate the terms, and draft the agreement. We can advise you if you have been asked to enter into an agreement.

Our service includes advising you on your legal position, whether the agreement is fair, and making sure the agreement is legally enforceable. We can also provide advice on setting unfair agreements aside. We can also provide advice on cohabitation (living together) agreements - which are sometimes known as 'no-nups'!

Our offices at Fakenham and Holt are open to the public from the 12th April 2021. We continue to offer a FREE INITIAL APPOINTMENT

Do your eyes give your age away? Erase signs of ageing, safely and quickly. Latest treatments at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic.

Effects of ageing skin gradually creep up. You feel good but the mirror tells a different story! Women and men believe the body part that most reveals their age is the eye area, followed by hands and facial skin. OK, you have tried botox but it can only do so much. Although it is a wonderful tool in experienced hands, it is not going to address all the changes that occur with ageing.

How can we help you reduce first signs of ageing around the eye area?

There are three main changes that occur with ageing. Loss of volume, loss of skin elasticity causing sagging skin and sun damage that affects

Beautiful Eyes

How do you perform eyelid skin tightening or skin removal to address more advanced changes of skin ageing?

With our technique the procedure is performed under pure local anaesthesia. We have also learned that fat removal is to be avoided unless there is obvious prolapse or bulging of the fat pads. This provides a natural look. Use of local anaesthesia allows a quick recovery whilst use of the laser reduces bleeding allowing a much faster recovery and minimal bruising. Although the scar is very fine and placed in a natural eyelid crease, we can also use the laser a few weeks after the procedure to further improve the surgical scar if required.

The owners of a secluded 18th century Norfolk Hall are to host an open garden and bijou craft fair in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association on the 29 and 30 May 2021. Over 21 local artisans will be showing their hand made wares. Mother and daughter, Pauline Harrold and Lara Lacey who live at Thurning Hall, Thurning between Reepham and Holt have hosted weddings at the Hall for over 26 years as an approved licensed civil ceremony venue. However, it is only the second time they have opened the garden to the public.

We can use lasers to create a new skin and reduce and reverse sun damage. This is only possible with a laser treatment. Finally if required we can use surgery to lift the brows or remove excess eyelid skin.

Eyelid skin tightening remains a very popular procedure. Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures worldwide. Ageing changes in this area are almost universal. We also perform brow lift surgery.

the skin quality. Essentially we can address all three elements of ageing resulting in total rejuvenation and natural looking results. Careful use of botox and fillers or fat injection can restore volume reduce dynamic wrinkles formed by muscle over activity. Another revolutionary technique has been tear trough rejuvenation with hyaluronic acid fillers such as restylane. New injection methods now allow us to achieve excellent results without any bruising or downtime. Your own fat is an excellent filler to provide volume even in eyebrows and temporal hollows.

Pauline who is 85, established the gardens when she moved to the hall in the 1960’s. She still loves working in them, planting and designing helped by Lara, her husband George and their three young children. There are over 150 spiced of roses with largely cottage style planting. Pauline first saw the hall when her late father, G.W Harrold a member of a well-known known Norfolk farming family acquired it during WW11. She remembers standing on the bridge which overlooks the lake and it was surrounded by Land Army girls and American Air Force men who were based nearby. The Hall had previously belonged to the Rev, Whitwell Elwin a direct descendent of Pocahontas and her husband John Rolfe who designed and had built the magnificent Booton Church, near Reepham, Norfolk. The Hall and grounds have also been used as a location to film “The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot and “A Fatal Inversion” by Barbara Vine as well as appearing as the backdrop for many national newspapers and magazine shoots. Kelly Boston,

community fundraiser for Motor Neurone Disease Association says “We are delighted to have the support of Lara and Thurning Hall and wish them every success for their garden party. The funds they raise will help us to continue our vital work in providing support for people affected MND, campaigning to raise awareness of the disease and funding research to find treatments and ultimately a cure for MND.” Open 29th & 30th May 2021, 10.30am -4pm Entry £3pp, children under 10 free. Carer Lorraine is an Absolute Gem

important to feel you’re a valued member of staff.”

A carer from Holt says the coronavirus pandemic has made everyone in the profession understand just how vital their work is, and that the satisfaction of a job well done and making a positive difference to their service user’s quality of life is greater than any financial reward.

When it comes to the standard of care that earned Lorraine her nomination and her award, her motto is simple: smile, and do as you would be done by.

Lorraine Childerley has been with Extra Hands for two years and works out of the Horsham St Faith office, near Norwich, having previously worked for Essex County Council.

“The thing I’ve noticed in the last year is the increased nervousness of care users – things like wearing a facemask can be a problem, so you have to make them feel safe. Having a positive attitude and reassuring them has been vital,” she said. “Go in with a cheerful smile, and if you see something that needs doing, do it. I like to walk out thinking that’s how I would leave my house, so I make sure everything is done. It’s about making people feel at ease and treating them just like any other person, not as someone with any vulnerability or disability.”

She was named the award-winning, family-run business' latest GEM award winner – standing for Going the Extra Mile. The awards were launched last year after Extra Hands was inundated with stories from our service users of carers going the extra mile during the Covid-19 pandemic. Lorraine said it was wonderful to receive a nod of recognition from the company for the work she does.

“I don’t think anyone outside the care industry knows how important domiciliary care is,” she said. “The last year has made everyone evaluate their jobs more and see what they could be doing to make a difference. But I wouldn’t change my job for all the tea in China - it’s not about financial reward, caring is what I do.”

The GEM award winner from Extra Hands' Heacham office, which has been rated outstanding by the CQC, was Debbie Underwood who was described as a person “who makes the world a better place”. Extra Hands supplies a wide range of care services, including a wellbeing check service that provides short visits to check up on care users when friends and family are unable to make the visit, giving everyone peace of mind.

As well as receiving a pat on the back from the company, based on customer satisfaction, Lorraine was eager to praise Extra Hands, which has operated for almost three decades, for the way it treats its own staff, through things like the GEM award.

“It’s really nice to be acknowledged for the work I do,” she said. “You feel appreciated for your contribution, because in a lot of jobs, you’re just a job number, but with Extra Hands, you feel you are a person and they do appreciate you.

“I moved up to this part of the world two years ago, and I’ve found Extra Hands to be a really good company to work for. Whenever I’ve had any problems, they’ve been there for me and supported me, personally as well as in my work. They don’t just look at you as an employee, they always support you too. It’s

“It’s unlikely that a government decision, allowing the festival to proceed, will be made before June 21st. Coastal Code

The Norfolk Coast Partnership provide information on how to enjoy the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in a sustainable way. This Coastal Code has been developed by local organisations and people who wish to safeguard the area. With the gradual easing of Covid-19 restrictions over the coming months, we hope it is a handy reminder for all and tourism businesses are welcome to share this information as they wish. Enjoy Respect Protect - Enjoy your visit and stay safe Prepare any relevant maps, guidebooks and other information to take with you. From North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Obviously, we are delighted when people choose to give one of our cats a new home but realise that we do not always have one that fits a person’s lifestyle. If we cannot help, other branch of Cats Protection or another charity (RSPCA for instance) may have something suitable. We do, however, still want everyone to have a good experience when offering a home to a cat, be it pedigree or moggy and will therefore continue to advise people to be cautious when buying on-line.

Another instance of unscrupulous people offering a pet for sale on one of these websites came to our attention when Stephanie recently received another call. This time a very distressed caller advised her that they had bought a kitten on-line which had health problems from the first day in its new home. Unfortunately, after several visits to the vets the poor little kitten had to be euthanised. All the family had to show for their experience was a vet bill.

Protect the area and its wildlife Take care not to disturb wildlife Keep away from cordoned areas Ensure you don't harm, destroy or remove any wildlife/plants/rocks Only light fires and/or BBQs in designated places Extra guidance for dog-walkers: Be aware of, and adhere to, restrictions limiting where dogs can go Keep your dog close to you and under your control Use a lead when needed or requested Prevent your dog from approaching cordoned areas Bag and bin your dog's poo Times to take extra care: At breeding times and when over-wintering, animals and birds and their young are particularly vulnerable. Check your visits don't disturb them: Bird breeding season is the beginning of March to the end of August Bird wintering season is the beginning of November to the end of March Common seal breeding season is the beginning of June to the end of August Grey seal breeding season is the beginning of November to the end of January We hope you enjoy your visit. The code can be found on our website at http://www. norfolkcoastaonb.org.uk/partnership/coastal-code/1081

Looking at the websites it is obvious from the prices being asked that the sellers are more interested in making money from the cats than caring for them. If you have decided you would like to offer a home to a cat or kitten, a good place to find lots of advice is the thecatgroup.org.uk website. This has lots of very useful information (including a Kitten Check List) and has been produced by a collection of professional organisations dedicated to feline welfare, including all the major charities involved in cat rescue. The Kitten Check List would be especially useful for someone considering purchasing a pedigree kitten and hopefully, by reading this, they will avoid being “sold a pup”! Many of the kittens sold on-line as pedigrees do not appear to have been registered with GCCF or one of the other bodies working to ensure that pedigree kittens meet the breed standards. Reputable breeders will also sell kittens at a lower price if they do not want them to be used for breeding, thus ensuring the characteristics of the breed are maintained and health problems avoided. Among the other interesting subjects which “thecatgroup” offers advice about is Cats and the Law and the benefits of neutering kittens at 4 months old, something that Cats Protection is committed to. The website provides useful information for cat owners old and new and is one I regularly refer to. If you are interested in receiving help to

News from Holt Lowes

Many people have been enjoying Holt Lowes (‘The Lowes’) over lockdown, and the Trustees of Holt Lowes - the body that owns and manages the Lowes in collaboration with the Norfolk Wildlife Trust - are delighted that the open spaces of Holt Lowes allow local people to experience a bit of ‘wilderness’ in these difficult times. The Lowes is often confused with Holt Country Park but is actually very different. The Country Park is largely made up of artificial conifer plantations and is owned by North Norfolk District Council. The Lowes is the area to the south and is basically a dry plateau covered in heathland and a little woodland (especially near the Norwich Road) and crossed by boggy streams that drain into the River Glaven, which forms the Lowes’ south-eastern boundary. The plants and animals that make up the heathland, grassland, woodland and marshes of the Lowes are very special, and in recognition of this Holt Lowes is designated an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and an SAC (Special Area of Conservation an international designation).

One of the most popular features of the Lowes is the small herd of Dartmoor Ponies and if you see the ponies you are on Holt Lowes. Grazing by the ponies helps to manage the vegetation for the special wildlife, but we do ask that the ponies are left alone and they should certainly never be fed. Dartmoors are used to rough grazing and artificial feeding can cause health issues, and it also encourages bad behaviour by the ponies - if they get too used to being fed they will start to expect food from everyone and 1this can result in difficult and est End_Layout 1 31/01/2020 19:55 Page stressful encounters for both humans and ponies.

Great Sundew one of the Lowes special plants.

The Trustees are planning a series of guided walks on the Lowes from May onwards into the summer in order to show off some of the lovely plants and animals and talk about the Lowes’ fascinating history. Full details, with dates and times, will be published online (www.holtlowes.org) and in the Holt Chronicle. Simon Harrap, Honorary Secretary, Trustees of Holt Lowes

Monthly Friday Night Bingo Sessions at Weybourne Village Hall

It is sad to report that after well over a decade of monthly Friday night Bingo Sessions in aid of the Harry Dawson Playing Field there are to be no more calls of ‘Eyes Down’ or ‘Full House!’ for this cause at Weybourne Village Hall. Due to committee members’ increasing age and decreasing health, the Harry Dawson Playing Field Committee has been forced to disband. In the Spring of 2020, the Parish Council took back responsibility for arranging maintenance and safety inspections at the children’s playing field, but the committee and loyal band of helpers, continued to run Bingo sessions to support the ongoing costs until prevented by the current restrictions. Since then, a total of £6,677 has been transferred to the Parish Council to be ring-fenced for much needed improvement to the equipment at the site in Beck Close, which is showing its age and a clear need for updating. We wish to say a massive thank you to all our supporters and players, past and present for helping to raise such a magnificent sum. It is hoped to form a team to obtain grant funding and continue fund raising on an ‘ad hoc’ basis for the necessary improvements. Anyone interested in helping on a voluntary basis is encouraged to contact Weybourne Parish Council’s Clerk or Chairman.

Blakeney Rowing Club Returns to The Water

BACK TO BUSINESS

Monday March 29th was a great day for your local rowing club. Bluejacket, one of the club’s beautiful skiffs, was towed back to Blakeney Carnser and made ready for its first outing. Meanwhile, Hoi Larntan, the club’s other racing craft, was rowed from Barton Turf on the first Broads expedition for many months. It was such a great pleasure to be back on the water again, meeting with friends on safely organised social rows and with the prospect of more exercise in the outdoors. See crablakeney.wordpress.com for pictures of happy rowers gaining respite from Zoom meetings. As a result of this year’s restrictions, forthcoming competitive events will take on a different structure. This will be mainly in the form of five-mile, timed rows undertaken by individual rowing clubs in their own areas. Times will then be collated centrally. This format will cover the Castle to Crane row, 7th to the 9th May, the Ocean to City Race, 4th to the 6th June, and the Welsh Sea Rowing Races on 9th to the 11th July. Such ventures were successfully organised last year. The above schedule will give an even greater interest to the forthcoming season. If you are interested in joining or supporting Blakeney Rowing Club, or perhaps you wish to try a new sport in the future, then phone club captain Humphrey on 07542 371469 for further information. Find out how you can be a part of the important community activity of rowing. All types of experience will be welcome. Join in, meet some interesting people and think ahead to fun times on the water. Best wishes and stay safe.

Welcome back to your regular update of what is happening on your local bowls green. After what seems an interminable break, we are so pleased to say that our members will be able to get back to play in the middle of April. Subject of course to the latest covid regulations: social distancing, three (alternate) rinks instead of the usual six, no joint handling of equipment and a ready supply of disinfectant and hand sanitiser.

Covid has left its mark on the Club. We have a somewhat depleted membership, both from age infirmity and an abnormal number of moves out of Norfolk. We hope we can make up these reductions later in the year. The pandemic has also had a wider effect on bowls in the District and County. Some district leagues are unlikely to run this year, and County use of our green will be reduced. Both these will mean we will be finding new ways of using the facility to make up for lost income. We hope to see you at our planned open day on Saturday 20th June - to either try the sport for the first time, renew an old hobby faded, or just have a good look around our facilities. More of that next time! B Pilgrim

Then why not try out Walking Rugby now that we have the go ahead to restart our weekly sessions on 2nd June and then every Wednesday evening. We should be set fair for better weather, longer evenings, and the back of Covid.

Founder Members of the Football League quiz 1 point awarded times by the question number (75 points possible) 1. Who are 'The Shrimpers'? 2. Which Turkish side did Graeme Souness manage? (pictured) 3. Who was the first player to represent England at all levels? 4. In the Premiership and Football League m any teams have Town as part of their names. What is Walking Rugby?

Walking Rugby is a fun team game that is accessible to people of all ages and abilities. It is attractive to both ex-players and those who are completely new to the game. Walking Rugby is a much simpler version of the traditional game of rugby. It is much less physical than a standard game of rugby, the aim is to participate, compete and most importantly, for players to enjoy themselves.

All sessions will start and finish with some gentle warm-up and warm-down exercises to help with overall fitness levels. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy the pace and competitiveness of the game, while former rugby or netball players will welcome the flexibility walking rugby offers. As the name suggests, players must walk, not run but it can still be played at a good pace. Who is Walking Rugby For?

Answers in the Next Issue

This is a game both sexes, all abilities and is suitable for anyone over 50. Since it is a competitive passing game, it is particularly suitable for ex-Rugby and Netball players, injured and rehabilitating current players and those interested in Rugby but without any experience! Those past retirement age can still indulge in their passion without the full-on contact - and those wishing to keep up their activity levels can try a new sport. The Gallant Gardner

Tomatoes originated from Peru and were brought to Europe by the Spanish, so they love the heat. They are from the same family as potatoes. When the fruits become ripe they will need picking or they will split and develop bacteria. If at the end of the season you still have green tomatoes, you can put them on a windowsill, and they will ripen.

Growing Tomatoes - April 2021

One of the most versatile, productive and cost saving crops that you can grow are tomatoes. In today’s climate and also the current market, there are varieties that will suit both greenhouse, outdoors and also hanging baskets. You can grow them in open ground, grow bags, large contain-ers or indeed hanging baskets. You can also grow them in running water which is called hydropon-ics which is quite technical.

Tomato plants are susceptible to white fly or red spider mite in a greenhouse, you can get parasit-ic wasps called Encarsia Formosa to eat the insects. Pots of basil and marigolds are said to help keep the insects away by their strong smell. The plants can develop yellowing on the leaves this is a sign of magnesium deficiency which can be dealt with by watering with Epsom salts. Other dis-eases range from botrytis (grey mould), if they are grown outdoors near potatoes, they can devel-op blight. This will destroy the plant and fruit.

In 2019 we visited Chateau de la Bourdaisiere in the Loire, France, there they have the world’s biggest collection of tomatoes. On each tripod they grow three different types of tomato and there were an amazing variety of colours, shapes and sizes. www.labourdaisiere.com/en/portfolio/the-national-tomato-conservatory

It is not too late to grow your own tomatoes, by starting them off on a warm windowsill in a pot of fine compost and putting a polythene bag over them to keep it moist. The seeds will germinate within a few days. Gradually take off the bag and keep them out of direct sun until they harden off a bit or they will scorch. You can buy already developed young plants ready to plant out in a greenhouse or conservatory soon.

When the tomato seedlings develop a further set of leaves, now is the time to pot them onto a 3” or 10cm pot of general-purpose compost. This plant can be grown on until you want to plant it out into its final location or indeed potted on to a bigger container, a pot the size of 18” would be well suited to growing it to a mature fruiting plant or indeed a grow bag would suit three plants.

As the plant grows it will put outside shoots from the leaf joint. If you want a single stem plant, these need to be nipped out. In between the leaves will develop what we call trusses of flowers, these will develop into the tomato fruits, once they start developing you will need to feed the plant. A good plant food that is diluted with water is called Tomorite, other makes are available. This needs to be applied once or twice a week. As the plant grows it will need support and using canes or thick pieces of wood the plant can grow beyond 6 feet tall or two metres. Once you have about 6 trusses on the plant now is the time to nip the top out. This will help the fruit develop. However, if you have a lot of room you could grow it as a bush. What you would need to do is put a circle of wire mesh around the plant to keep the branches and fruit off the ground, supporting the whole plant, then you do not need to nip out the shoots coming from the leaf joints.

You can now grow a wonderful, sweet cropping tomato which is purely for growing in hanging baskets, put three plants in a large hanging basket, filled with good compost. They will need wa-tering every day and fed at least twice a week as the plants are very hungry. Once the frost is no longer a problem they can go outside.

On 5th March 2020 the first death from Covid-19 in the UK was confirmed. At that date just over 100 cases had been recorded and the Prime Minister thought the outbreak would cause the country "a substantial period of disruption." One year later and in the past 12 months over 125,000 people in the UK have died from a disease that none of us had heard of at the start of 2020 and which has now killed over 2.6 million people globally. Statistics show that approximately 60% of people in the UK don't have a Will: that's 75,000 of those people. Applying those statistics, 75,000 people who died in the last 12 months in the UK from Covid-19 died without a Will: 75,000 people!

75,000 people not only left families distraught and upset through their untimely deaths but who then compounded that grief by the family discovering that person had not made a Will, causing unnecessary stress and upset at a time they needed it least. One of the most responsible and straightforward matters that we can do is to have a Will in place; an up-to-date document which is properly drafted by a Solicitor and can easily be located on death.

Losing a loved one is stressful and upsetting,

particularly if this death was unexpected. If you die without a Will your family will need to get legal advice and dealing with matters is usually more costly and complex. A Will is the only legal way to specify what you want to happen to your child if you die before they are 18. A Will is especially important for parents with young children to appoint a legal guardian. A Will is the only way to leave assets to your partner and your partner's children if you are unmarried; unmarried partners or "common-law" spouses receive nothing if you die without a Will.

If you die without a Will the law decides who gets what according to certain rules. These are called the rules of intestacy, which can be can be arbitrary.

Throughout the ongoing restrictions of Covid-19 it has been possible to prepare a Will; we have met clients in car-parks, outside windows, in their own homes and remotely via Zoom, Teams, WhatsApp and Facetime. Meeting clients remotely has become the 'new norm' as we've responded to the challenges of this pandemic and delivered exceptional service. The coronavirus pandemic, more than any other event in our recent history, has forced us to re-evaluate our lives: it has killed people, forced people to lose their livelihoods, restricted our freedoms
