A Note from the Editor
What turbulent times we are living in, with war and economic hardship. Terrible scenes on TV of displaced women, children and elderly clutching what few possessions they can carry. Who would not want to do something to help? Organizations such as The Red Cross, Unicef, Save the Children and many more are coordinating donations to bring aid to the Ukrainians, but, as the saying goes, the other side of an emergency is an opportunity, but not always a good one. In the last 2 weeks I have had several spam emails appealing for money for Ukraine. These are not linked to any official organization and the email addresses are bogus. We all want to do what we can to bring some relief to those in need but please be careful your money is not going to the scammers. If you want to donate, please use the official websites or donate at any of the high street banks, all of which will make sure your money goes to the right place. If you receive an email that looks suspicious, don’t click on any links, instead send it to the junk folder and do a search for your chosen charity to donate via a genuine website. Enjoy your April magazine. Keep safe and well. Jo – Editor. Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines.

News from the Venue
The year is galloping by, and we are already planning our wonderful celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June. There are so many wonderful events going on for the weekend beginning 3rd June, but 3 projects we are most excited about are the Commemorative Commonwealth Flowers Textile Project, featuring 4 large textile wall-hangings that celebrate the beautiful diversity of the Commonwealth Countries, and that brings together many crafters, makers and organisations to collaborate on this art project, which will be displayed in the Venue, the Queen’s Portrait Art Exhibition, which is open to all and will have special workshops on portrait painting to enable as many people as possible to take part in a community Art Exhibition in the Anwen and John Hurt Exhibition Space at the Venue, and a wonderful Jubilee ‘Thank you’ Afternoon Tea for all those Community Stars who have served our town so magnificently in the past. There is much to do with projects such as this, and many and varied ways in which to get involved, so if you fancy joining in or getting involved, please do get in touch. Information about all these projects and events are on the town’s official Jubilee website, www.holtcelebrates.org.
Live music is set to be a bigger feature this year at the Venue, with 2 great evenings coming up soon, Blues Night with amazing local band After Hours on 30th April, and a big fundraising gig with live band The Soul Traders on 7th May to raise vital funds for the Ukraine crisis. All proceeds on the night, including all profits from the bar, will go towards helping those in Ukraine. We are also one of the venues in town where you can donate goods towards helping displaced people in Ukraine and the surrounding countries, so please do pop in and help towards this effort if you can, lists and donation boxes are available on site at the Venue, and at the Methodist Church, St Andrews Church, The Holt Youth Project and the Treehouse.
These are challenging times, especially coming so soon after the Covid crisis, so it’s good to continue to meet and support each other, and the Community Café at the Venue on Thursday lunchtimes is a great place to do that. We serve a delicious freshly cooked 2 course meal, and anyone can come to connect, combat loneliness, and support each other. The food is free, but we are self-funding, so donations are always gratefully received. We did lose several volunteers following the lockdowns and are always in need of help to provide this vital service to the community, so if you have a few hours to spare on a Thursday and would like to come and join the team, please do get in touch at www.thevenueholt.com, or tel: 01263 713427, we would love to welcome you to the Venue! Dear Readers,
County Councillor News
Adjust the number of management layers and improve spans of control, to support “robust and agile decision making” Make management and supervisory savings, creating a more effective structure “that enables performance to be maximised”
from County Councillor Eric Vardy
Norfolk Local Transport Plan Consultation opens on the plan set to shape transport in Norfolk over the next 14 years. People will get their chance over the coming weeks to take a look at, and have their say on, a set of proposed actions that are designed to address key transport challenges over the next 14 years. The Norfolk Local Transport Plan 4 (LTP4) is set to drive the county’s transport strategy until 2036 and key challenges that the plan seeks to address include carbon reduction and air quality. Since the overall LTP4 strategy was adopted last year officers have been working to develop this implementation plan to achieve a number of goals, including net zero carbon. The comprehensive plan also pulls together a wide range of forward-looking schemes that can be delivered by the county council, including some already underway – such as the electric vehicle strategy which is set to boost the number of charging points across the county, and the popular Beryl Bikes and e-scooter trial in Norwich which already has 43,500 registered users. Norfolk’s ambitious Bus Service Improvement Plan is also part of the LTP4 and aims to simplify ticketing and journey information, cut fares for under 25s, bring in cleaner and greener buses, improve accessibility and bus stops, and make better and more frequent links between the places people live, work and shop. Key to achieving a number of the aims in the plan will be working in partnership with local and national bodies to achieve much needed rail improvements and better local and regional connections. The consultation runs from 21 March to 2022 to the 2nd May - explore this plan via www.Norfolk.gov.uk Review of council could save up to £20m per year A major review to make Norfolk County Council “match fit” for the future and save up to £20 million will be considered by the cabinet. Removing duplication, improving performance and being more cost effective are the aims of a proposed organisational review – the council’s first for 10 years. Initial work carried out last year suggests that there is scope to make recurrent annual savings of £15 million - £20 million, by the end of the 2022-23 financial year, by improving the way the council operates The council faces a £60 million budget gap in 2023-24 and we’ve started planning how to bridge that. This review will play a key part in that work. The report says the review provides an opportunity to: Remove all areas of duplication, including in support services that exist in the council’s centre and in departments Give greater clarity of accountability
Norfolk County Council recognised for making Norfolk and Suffolk a better place to live Norfolk County Council has won a Bronze Award. Hosted by the iESE, the winning project, the Norfolk and Suffolk Innovation Network, was recognised in the Asset Management and Regeneration Award category to deliver proven benefits to local public services and their communities. Norfolk County Council was nominated for its work in developing its Internet of Things Innovation Network using its Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) for sending and receiving low power signals from digital devices and objects. Objects and devices in the LoRaWAN each have built-in sensors that capture small packets of data about their status or information from their surroundings and report the information via the network. This technology allows roads to flag up when they need gritting, rubbish bins to say when they need to be emptied, rivers to say when the water level is getting close to flooding, and parking spaces to say whether they are empty or occupied. It also benefits domestic settings, with sensors which can help people to keep living independently in their own homes for longer. All this extra information can allow cities, towns and rural communities to run smoothly, making them better places to live and work and, crucially, to help the more remote areas of Norfolk and Suffolk become better connected. It also creates an opportunity for businesses in Norfolk to innovate and evolve. This Innovation Network marks yet a further step in achieving our ambition of making Norfolk one of the best digitally connected rural counties in the country.
Eric Vardy
County Councillor for Holt Division (Aylmerton, Barningham, Bessingham, Cley-next-the-Sea, East Beckham, East Runton, Gresham, High Kelling, Holt, Kelling, Matlaske, Metton, Runton, Salthouse, Sustead, Upper Sheringham, West Beckham, West Runton,Weybourne).
A Ladder to the Moon
Arrive at 6.30pm, when the bar will be open, for a 7.00pm start. The evening will finish 9.00pm-ish.
Arts Forum on Wednesday 13th April An interview with local, national and internationally celebrated storyteller Hugh Lupton.
Hugh has toured both nationally and internationally and has performed at the RSC, the National Theatre and the Barbican, as well as at schools, community venues and arts centres the length and breadth of Britain. His repertoire ranges from Greek epic to Grimms Fairy Tales, from Norse and Celtic myth to East Anglian folktales, from the Great War to John Clare. Thematically his work often explores our place in the landscape and the deep cultural memories we carry. He will be discussing storytelling, from a professional and personal point of view; where it comes from and why; and why it is still so resonant and important today. He will illustrate the discussion with examples, and, after the interval, will round off the evening with a short storytelling session. Time will also be given for questions and there will be time to mingle, make new contacts, and share thoughts and ideas.
email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk
It says the review will also support empowerment and upskilling of leaders and managers and attracting, retaining and developing the best people. The report says: “The County Council will continue to be a large organisation that delivers a diverse range of services. But changes to the public sector landscape and funding regimes necessitate a new approach as we evolve over the next few years.” If cabinet supports the review, specialist advisers will be commissioned to assist the Council. The cost is not known at this stage, but it will be fraction of the project £15 million - £20 million saving.

Outside Looking In
What if you were given a life-altering diagnosis at 57? One that meant you aren’t who you thought you were? But one that explained everything?
A new anthology of poetry from Sheringham author Clare Smith – Outside Looking In - vibrates with intensity and curiosity about life, and because she was diagnosed with autism so late in life, many of her poems focus not so much on what it means to be autistic, as on what it means to be human. No less a person than Prof Tony Attwood, one of the world’s leading autism researchers, has endorsed the work, describes her poetry as “sensitive and engaging”.
Throughout her life, as she struggled to fit into a world that to her was utterly strange, she poured her hopes, her joys and at times her despair into words. She trained as a journalist and was taught to cut all emotion from her reporting, but her private writing is different – she created poetry that spoke to her deepest needs. There, exposed in her writing, some of which dates back more than forty years, is her yearning to belong, her astonishment at the physical world, her knowledge – decades before the doctors confirmed it – that she is different. She’s spent a lifetime trying to make sense of her life – a journey that many of us, whether autistic or neurotypical, are on, and one in which we all face the same questions.
Outside Looking In by Clare Smith can be bought from Amazon or Austen Macauley, price £6.99.

Benefits of a bath!
There are many people who are considering removing their bath to replace it with a walk-in shower, as they are currently struggling not only to lift their legs over the side of a bath but once in the bath, to get up and out again. The benefits of a long soak to ease aching limbs and muscle pains as well as lifting mood are well documented and baths can help to make you feel more awake as well as an aid to a good sleep.
Taking a bath will help you breathe easier because the warmer water makes the heart beat faster, increasing the flow of oxygen around the body. Bathing is also good for cleaning and moisturizing hair, skin and eyes. The human body is made mostly of water which is why we are encouraged to drink plenty of it but soaking in it is also good for the body.
Age Concern North Norfolk has a fully adapted Parker bath with a recline function to enable people to enjoy the benefits of being immersed fully in water. There is a ceiling track hoist to facilitate access. If you are interested in availing of this service, our charge is £20. Please contact Alison on 01263 821188 to arrange. Perhaps you could also come and have lunch either before or after your bath! www.holtchronicle.co.uk

Do you still need a solicitor if you are getting divorced online?
By Maria Endall, Family Solicitor, Hayes + Storr.
The fact that divorcing couples can now apply online for their divorce and, from April 2022, won’t need to prove fault for the breakdown of their marriage, will make it easier for the tech-savvy to apply for a divorce without the need for a solicitor. But what about the financial implications of getting divorce? Who gets the house, or the tenancy? How are you going to ensure that pension assets are shared equally? What about the family car you spent so long saving or paying for? And if there is a business, how do you fairly take that into account? Do you even know the full extent of your spouse’s finances?
It is important to know that, even after you have obtained a final order in the divorce (previously known as the decree absolute), yours and your spouse’s claims for financial relief arising out of the marriage will remain open – unless you also get an order from the court stating how the property and finances are to be split. The new online divorce process will not tell you how to do this, as splitting the matrimonial finances must be dealt with separately.
This is why you will still need advice from a solicitor. Couples who think they have sorted out their finances once they’ve separated, could be doing themselves out of a fair and proper settlement. Alternatively, if you think
you’ve got away lightly and still managed to walk away with the lion’s share of your assets after the divorce, you’re still open to having a claim made against you in the future unless you get a court order making the split of the assets binding and enforceable.
Involving a solicitor to help you sort out the matrimonial finances needn’t upturn what was otherwise an amicable separation and divorce, or cost the earth. Family solicitors at Hayes +Storr are members of Resolution, a family law organisation set up to help families resolve their legal matters as amicably as possible. We will negotiate amicably on your behalf and recommend mediation when appropriate, but we will also make sure that you fully understand your legal rights and entitlements and do our best to secure a fair settlement.

Dear friends, Those who continue to live with the unimaginable atrocities of war and conflict in Ukraine and other countries around the world, the joy of Easter will be sadly lacking this year. For millions of people who continue to suffer at the hands of others, the pain and suffering of the crucifixion of Christ on Good Friday will be a stark reality that they have to live with. For them it may well seem that the forces of evil have won, that the force of might has triumphed over goodness, truth and freedom. They must wonder if the darkness that has descended over them will ever be lifted. On that first Good Friday Jesus’ disciples had witnessed his horrific death by crucifixion, and they had buried his body. No doubt many of them, filled with grief and despair thought that was the end. Their hopes and dreams of a better future crushed in one final cruel and brutal act. But that was all set to change when on the third day a number of women went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body. They found the tomb open, and his body gone and then one by one they encounter the risen Jesus and share the good news with others. Their sadness was turned to joy, and their hopes were restored. The resurrection of Christ is the triumph of life over death, hope over despair, love over hate, peace over conflict and light over darkness. By his death on the cross and his resurrection from the grave Christ has already won the victory. I admit it may seem a shallow victory when faced with the horrific consequences of war, poverty, famine, sickness and disease, yet we have to both pray and commit ourselves to working towards it becoming a reality in the lives of millions of people displaced, injured, maimed, and traumatised by their experience of life, that may come to know the true joy of Easter. The celebration of Easter assures us that love is stronger than death and that nothing can ever separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. May it be so in our lives and in the lives of all. Please be assured of my prayers for a joy filled Eastertide. Happy Easter!
Every blessing,
Fr. Howard

From Holt Consulting Rooms Don’t let foot pain mess up your life.
If you love to run, take walks and exercise, or are just happy to be pottering in the garden, your feet need a little TLC. Here are some easy ways to help avoid problems. If the Shoe Fits: 1. Wear appropriate shoes for the activity you are performing: well cushioned shoes for long periods of standing, and activity-specific ones for exercise. 2. Don’t wear the same pair every day. (This goes for work shoes too.) 3. Stick with heels no higher than ¾ inch. Heels contribute to knee and back problems, falls and an awkward, unnatural gait. 4. If possible measure your feet every time you buy shoes. Try on both shoes and walk in them. Make sure there are no uncomfortable pressure points, that your toes are squeezed, and that your heel doesn’t slip. The Joy of Socks 5. Choose materials that wick sweat away from your feet. Avoid nylon socks and pantyhose for long periods of time. 6. Avoid tight socks or nylons that squeeze your toes or bunch under your feet. 7. Change socks at least one a day; never wear the same pair two days on a row. Move it the Right Way 8. Don’t do long or strenuous weight bearing, aerobic workouts on back-toback days 9. Regular stretching and strengthening exercises for your feet, ankles and calves will keep them healthier. Clean Feet are Happy Feet 10. Keep your feet dry. 11. Shower shoes give some protection in public facilities. 12. Cut toenails straight across. 13. Check that your pedicure therapist uses sterilised equipment. 14. Wash and carefully dry your feet daily, especially between the toes. 15. Clean and disinfect your shower regularly. Aren’t you worth it! Hot Cross Buns
Easter is almost upon us; the hot cross buns have been in the supermarkets for several weeks (do they ever go away?) but is it just me or do they taste a bit plain and boring? Well, that could all change by having a go at making them yourself. Nothing beats the warm, freshly baked home-made version (as you can see from the missing one in the picture!) and simpler to make than you might think. They do take a little time with the proving and kneading but well worth the effort compared with the rather squashed and sparsely fruited shop bought variety. If you haven’t tried making yeasted dough before, this is a very forgiving recipe to begin with. The recipe makes 12 buns, best eaten on the day they are made, but if you have any left over, they make and excellent bread and butter pudding.
Ingredients
500g strong white bread flour 75g caster sugar 2 teaspoons ground mixed spice 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon zest of 1 lemon 2 level teaspoon salt 10g fast action dried yeast 40g butter 300ml full fat milk 1 egg 200g sultanas 50g chopped mixed peel
Oil for greasing 3 tablespoons of plain flour and about 100ml water for the crosses golden syrup or honey for glazing
Method
Mix together the bread flour, sugar, spices and lemon zest in a large bowl. Add the salt to one side of the bowl and the yeast to the opposite side (salt will kill the yeast if mixed directly). Melt the butter in a small pan and warm the milk in a separate pan or the microwave until tepid. Add the melted butter and half the milk to the dry mix then add the egg. Mix together with your hands, add the remaining milk a little at a time until you have a soft dough. You may have some milk left over. Tip out the dough onto a floured surface and knead by hand, stretching and folding the dough and mixing in the dried fruit as you go. Knead for about 10 minutes until you have a smooth, stretchy dough. Form into a ball and place in an oiled bowl, cover and leave to prove somewhere warm (not too near a radiator) until it doubles in size (about 1 ½ hours). Turn out on a floured surface again and knead for another 5 minutes, put back in the bowl, cover and prove again for another hour or until doubled in size. Turn out onto the floured surface and divide into 12 equal pieces and shape into balls. Place on a lined baking sheet (you may need 2), then place inside a large, clean plastic bag (not letting them touch the bag) and leave to prove until doubled in size.
Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/Gas7. For the crosses mix the plain flour with enough water to make a loose paste and put into a piping bag. When the buns have proved pipe a cross on each one. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden. Place on a cooling rack and before they cool brush with warmed golden syrup or honey to glaze.
Enjoy and Happy Easter
Super Quick Chick!
There are times when you’ve been working so hard that your body really needs some good quality food, but you’re too exhausted to make it happen. That's when you need a couple of recipes up your sleeve that require little thought or effort, but pack as much energy and comfort as possible. This recipe, which I call my emergency chicken, is one of the best. It’s so easy and quick to do which is great when you’re super tired but is utterly delicious and satisfying. Use the best quality ingredients that you can afford and add in any other veg you may have to hand, especially cooked leftovers. I use microwave rice for these occasions, which again take only 2 minutes and are very reasonably priced and easy to keep stocked in your cupboard. You can throw this together in 15 minutes, and it’s much better for you than giving in to junk food!
Ingredients 2 chicken breasts, chopped, or other chopped chicken 1 or 2 rashers of bacon, chopped 1 onion Tblsp olive oil 1 fat garlic clove, finely chopped Tsp dried Thyme or oregano A handful of mushrooms, sliced Small pot of double cream Seasoning to taste Serve with microwave rice (only 2 mins to cook!)
Method Place onion, bacon and chicken in a deep non-stick frying pan or wok and fry with the olive oil for 5 minutes. Add in the herbs and garlic, and the mushrooms, and continue gently cooking until the chicken is cooked through, being careful not allow it to catch. Pour in the cream once cooked through, stir and check seasoning. Allow to simmer for a couple of minutes. Microwave your rice and serve the chicken alongside. Musicians young and old playing in the church and churchyard. Arts and crafts displayed in the church along with Easter flowers also an Easter Egg Hunt for the children. Cake and plant stalls, fruit punch and cake for sale, bring a picnic and have a wander. All funds raised are much needed for St. Mary’s Gunthorpe Church.
Active Fakenham have produced the 2022 Fakenham Town Guide, which is sponsored by Aldiss. The guide includes useful information about local shops, services and clubs as well as shining a light on some of the more interesting features of the town. It also includes a town map.
Richard Crook, from Active Fakenham who oversaw the project said, “We are very pleased with this year’s guide. The last couple of years have been difficult as distribution was disrupted and at times people were advised not to pick up or circulate paper materials. This year it’s full steam ahead, the guide will go out with the Fakenham Times, the Fakenham Sun and there are copies available in shops in the town. It is also on websites including the Active Fakenham site where it can be read or downloaded. We will also distribute it across social media. We hope you find it interesting and useful”
Copies are available for shops and others who would like a supply by contacting richard@ activefakenham.org.uk
A chance to gather for a day of enjoyment with much needed donations gratefully accepted for the church. Supported by the Friends of Gunthorpe Church and The Gunthorpe Village

Hospital Quay
created an outdoor space for contemplation - a haven for bees and butterflies and a wonderful space to take a breath.
At the end of my term of office as Chair of Wells Community Hospital, my overwhelming feeling is one of gratitude. As a new trustee in 2019 I was greeted with the disappointing news that efforts to secure the building of a bedded unit had fallen through. The disappointment of the local community was shared by trustees who had worked hard to try and deliver on this aspiration.
Summer 2021 saw East of England Ambulance’s cycling paramedics arrive at the hospital, responding to many lifesaving incidents in Wells and nearby villages. They will be returning in spring 2022.
Adversity brings opportunity for change and so, on becoming chair, the board focused on what we could do, not what we couldn't. Using our charitable objects as our guide, we asked local people in the town and surrounding villages, what mattered to them and would keep them healthy and well. They told us they wanted us to create a ‘hub’ where health and social care professionals work alongside volunteers and local providers offering a wide range of services that enable people to thrive and be supported when needed. This included: feeling connected with friends, family, and the community; a sense of purpose; healthy eating, and access to nature.
Working in partnership with the statutory sector, local businesses and other charities meant we could collectively maximise our resources to create a thriving and healthy community and support people when they need additional help through traditional clinical services. Whilst not part of the NHS, we felt it critical to work closely with emerging networks of GP practices, community and mental health providers, and acute hospitals, to integrate services built on local needs, making sure we are seen as an integral part of future development of health and social care, and the specific needs of the coastline are built into strategic plans. 2020 brought a global pandemic. We adapted services to continue to provide activities local people needed, including outdoor space for local groups to meet and online networks, keeping people connected, maintaining an important sense of community during a difficult time. 2021 saw the pressures of lockdowns and restrictions continued. We maintained the community hub where volunteers helped deliver prescriptions, assist with shopping, walk dogs and any other requests. Recognising a need, we partnered with The Trussell Trust, adding a foodbank service at the hospital, meaning people in Wells, The Burnhams, Walsingham and surrounding villages can access much-needed support.
With help from Sport England, Active Norfolk, and Norfolk Community Foundation we opened our fitness space, providing exercise classes in Pilates, line dancing, yoga, and seated exercise –enabling people to address pain and mobility difficulties and enhance their physical and mental health in a supported environment. Our team provide outreach dance classes at Alderman Peel High School, encouraging and empowering girls to participate in and continue to exercise. In November we supported the NHS vaccination programme, enabling over 1000 people to receive their booster vaccination close to home and as the NHS develops a greater focus on ‘place’, we will continue to encourage them, to increase access to more local clinical services. None of this is possible without our many partners – thank you. Thank you also to those who have fundraised and provided generous donations.
All of this work has been recognised by the Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk, Lady Dannatt who became our Patron in 2020.
To the future…
We will carry on building your ‘community hub’, developing a range of health and wellbeing services, including exercise, music, and art groups to fulfil our charitable objects in keeping people well, and supported when needed. We know this is much appreciated by those who come because they tell us so.
Having completed my term of office, I’m handing over to Dr Steve Shaw, a retired doctor, dentist, and CEO who lives in Stanhoe with his wife and dogs. Steve is committed to improving population health and will build on the work to date to ensure we grow from strength to strength. I’d like to finish with a thank you. Being the chair of this organisation has been an honour. I’ve had the privilege to meet people across the Norfolk coastline with ambition for improving local people’s lives. From the younger to older generation, those born locally or have come over the years. In a time of increasing polarisation and conflict, I’ve always wanted WCHT to be a place for everyone; because, at the end of the day, our happiness is intwined with the happiness of others and what makes a healthy community is one that welcomes and celebrates all who live in it.
Finally, we saw services return and new ones added, providing space to practitioners including foot care, massage, sports therapy, and acupuncture. We also host a psychotherapist, ‘The Pandora Project’ (domestic violence support), and ‘The Big C’ drop-in support service for people with cancer. Our groups returned including, ‘The Nelson Group’, ‘Singing Together’ and new ones started such as the ‘Talking Elephants’, bereavement support and walking for wellbeing group.
Our community café opened in June 2021, ject1 Master_Layout 1 08/09/2021 22:07 Page 1 offering a space for a chat and coffee and with the hard work of our gardening volunteers we

Brian of Briston ...
Yes, we know it should read 'Brain of Briston' but it made you look, didn't it, and our super 'Sounds and Pictures' quizzes are always worth a good look! 120 questions will come at you thick and fast off our big screen, some easy, some more difficult, some downright silly, but aimed at the whole family. The date is Saturday April 23rd, the time is 6.30pm for 7pm start, the venue is The Copeman Centre, Hall Street, Briston, NR24 2LG, the cost is just £6 a head, which includes teas and coffees (or bring your own booze - we can supply glasses) and a super Jacket Potato Supper (loads of fillings!) and a pudding thrown in (well, you know what we mean) and there are magnificent (!) prizes for the winning team, and slightly less magnificent prizes for the dunces. Ideally, we need teams of four please, but if you want to come solo, or as a two or three, we can pair you up with people who have a Master’s degree in origami. Booking is essential please - these nights are very popular - and you can do just that by 'phoning Carol on 01263 860844 anytime. Any questions? No, that's good, 'cos that's our job! Weybourne WI Celebrate Their 14th Birthday
Holt WI
The March gathering was a lively and busy meeting, lots of plans for future events and outings on the agenda.
There was a party atmosphere in Weybourne Village Hall on Wednesday, 2nd March, when 39 members and 2 visitors met to celebrate the 14th birthday of Weybourne WI.
More local knowledge was gained when our speaker Debbie Bradley gave an interesting and entertaining talk on Suffragettes and Suffragists in Norfolk. Our speakers’ topics cover a wide range, and we learn something new every month. Next month the subject will be Medieval Toys.
After Celia Howe, President, had welcomed everyone we began the afternoon, by singing Jerusalem. This was followed by a short business meeting, where forthcoming events were discussed, plus dates for various interest groups.
Tea and biscuits were followed by a successful raffle with some lovely prizes. If you would like to see what we are all about then why not come as a visitor, we meet third Wednesday of the month 2-4pm at The Venue. You will be made very
Heather Dakin, Minutes Secretary, was named ‘Member of the Year’ and presented with a trophy. This was in recognition of all that she had done during the pandemic to keep members in touch, including zoom meetings and a monthly newsletter.
welcome.
Members were invited to join a Morris Dancing group, which is being organised by Briston WI.
Our speaker was Mr David Reeve, who had worked for many years as a Detective protecting the Royal family at Sandringham. He kept us all thoroughly entertained with amusing anecdotes about his experiences. It was clear that his role had been a complex one at times. Members asked a variety of questions and Kath Griffiths gave the vote of thanks. The theme of our competition table was items with a connection to Royalty and members excelled themselves with an impressive display. These were judged by Mr Reeve. We then all enjoyed a choice of delicious cakes which had been made by committee members and the afternoon concluded with the raffle being drawn.

North Norfolk Amnesty Group
North Norfolk Amnesty Group has enjoyed much support in this area. In December 2021 we ran a successful 'Write for Rights ' event in Wiveton Village Hall and coupled this with tea, coffee and cake plus a bric-a-brac sale. In previous years we have enjoyed successful Write for Rights events in North Walsham and Fakenham. Wiveton has also played host to a wonderful 'Story Telling' event in that village hall and we have held AmnesTea parties at Wiveton Hall Café and The Art Café at Glandford.
Our members are also involved in 'Welcome Wheels'. This project provides second-hand bikes to refugees and asylum seekers in the Norwich area where they will be used to help provide essential access to college, school and English classes and appointments. We are raising funds towards the costs of reconditioning the cycles to ensure they are safe to ride as well as essential safety equipment like helmets and lights. To this end we are working with the Society of Friends in Wells and holding another Bric-a-brac sale at The Quaker Meeting House, 43 Church St, Wells- next -the -Sea. NR23 1HZon Saturday April 23rd, 10.00am – 4.00pm.
Our main effort after that is a ceilidh the following Friday at Cley Village Hall. This will be our 3rd Ceilidh in Cley, a venue we have always found to be very hospitable and successful. Sadly, the pandemic twice forced a delay in holding this event but we are really pleased to once again have the Norfolk ceilidh band 'Whirligig' playing for us. This will be their second appearance and it looks to be a great evening of music and dancing. To keep the dancers going there will be food and refreshments available and the bar will be open. The ceilidh will be on Friday 29th April on from 7.30pm - 11.00pm. Tickets are £10.00. Under 12s get in free! and are available from Chris : 07719 543756 or email: seagull504@yahoo.co.uk Made in Cley: 01263 740134 and available 'on the door on the night.'
Weather Forecast
May will be an improvement on April but we will have to wait to the last third of the month to get the best of the weather. June will mirror May so summer will be only slowly arriving. Just now and again we will get some very warm days, but this will quickly turn things thundery.
The past three months have provided a lot of fair weather especially January and March with temperatures fluctuating either side of average. February produced the wettest spells and the stormiest. The first week of April looks likely to remind us that cold air only needs the right wind direction and it will be down here. The rest of the month will be mixed across the board and quite wet.

Do you have a super cat?
Over recent decades it is becoming more apparent that our cats are living longer. To encourage us, as owners, to consider what life stage our cats are in and what changes in our cats may be going through, some new terminologies have been introduced. Cats aged between 11-15 years old are called “senior cats”, while those cats over 15 are said to be “super senior” – perhaps nicer words than being referred to as “geriatric”.
When considering our cats’ well-being we need to look at three different aspects – their physical health, their cognitive health and also their emotional health.
Polly Many physical health conditions – such as kidney disease, thyroid illness, dental issues, arthritis and increased blood pressure – simply become more common as our cats get older. The earlier that these conditions are detected the better the outcome will be for our cats. An annual check up is recommend for our senior cats, whereas a twice a year check up would be suggested for the super senior cats.
Feline cognitive dysfunction syndrome, or dementia, will affect the way in which our cats think and learn. Cats with this condition show varying problems, but can include wandering behaviour, meowing for no reason, or a change in toileting routines. There may be no easy solution to these issues, but often practical advice can be given by vets and vet nurses on how to manage these changes as best as possible.
Emotional health is best thought of as our cats’ well-being. Often simple changes such as appropriate sleeping places, easy to use litter trays, more accessible food and water bowls will make our cats’ lives easier. Even just grooming our cats can make a dramatic improvement to their happiness. More information about caring for our aging cats can be found at www.catcare4life.org, or simply by contacting your local vets.

Valentine was found lying in a front garden in North Walsham underneath the bird table, he has an injured back leg, as the garden was very near a busy road, I suspect he took a knock from a car and managed to crawl into the garden. He is eating well and there is no infection so it should heal in time. We will be at North Walsham Garden Centre on Easter Saturday, 16th April, 10am -3pm. Come and see us.
North Norfolk Photographic Society
North Norfolk Photographic Society is always delighted to welcome Sarah Kelman. This remarkable lady is a fine photographer in her own right, and as such is an excellent photographic judge, but in addition is a keen sailor and flies jumbo passenger jets for a living. Sarah came to Cley to judge the club’s second Prints competition, which this time were required to be mono – in black and white.
Fulmars claiming a nest site. Judith Wells.
The Gold awards went to Paul Richards “Empathy Between Friends”, Judith Wells “Fulmars Claiming the Nest”, Paul Raddon “Flying” and Hanne Seibers “Monty”. Paul Richards, Hanne Seibers and Robert Geldard (one of the new members) were winners of Silver awards and Judith Wells, Liz Akers, Lizzie Wallis and Nick Akers got the Bronze. North Norfolk Photographic Society meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month at Cley Village Hall.
There was an excellent number of entries, 56 in all, including several from new members. In these digital times, it is so much easier not to go to the trouble of producing an immaculate print, so it was good to see the wonderful prints produced.
Sarah gave her usual very perceptive comments on every entry and after setting 19 aside for further consideration awarded 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 4 Bronze awards, as well 4 Highly Commended and 4 Commended awards.

Carers Trust Responds to the Chancellor’s Spring Statement
Choral Society Announces New President
The Chancellor, the Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP, today presented his Spring Statement to Parliament. Responding to the Statement and what it means for unpaid family carers across the UK, Carers Trust’s Chief Executive Officer, Kirsty McHugh, said: “Carers Trust research last month showed that unpaid carers are at the sharp end of the cost-of-living crisis. However, the Chancellor has again missed the opportunity to support unpaid carers, without whom our health and social care system would simply collapse. This is in sharp contrast to the Welsh and Scottish Governments who have recognised the importance of unpaid carers with the announcement of extra financial support. “Overall, unpaid carers will be bitterly disappointed by today’s Spring Statement. There was little announced that shows the Government understands their plight. Many were missing bill payments, cutting back on food and borrowing money before the recent cost of living crisis. Even the minority of unpaid carers who are eligible for Carer’s Allowance face a real terms decrease in what they receive, as the allowance is due to increase by only £2.10 a week from April to £69.70. This nowhere near enough to keep up with inflation. “In addition, we are worried that there was little in the announcement which will help local carer organisations, without whom many unpaid carers would not be able to cope day to day. Many are coping with spiralling fuel bills and difficulties with recruitment. We must ensure that the extra funding raised by the forthcoming Health and Social Care Levy helps a transformation in the local social care landscape.”
Youth and Age combine to make glorious music
Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to be working with Broadland Youth Choir to perform John Rutter’s Mass of the Children, a piece written especially to be performed by a joint adult and children’s choir.
The concert will take place in Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 30 April at 7.00 pm. Also on the programme is the first performance of Seasons which has been commissioned from Thomas Hewitt Jones and is dedicated to the Choral Society and to the memory of Barbara Proctor. Barbara, a long-standing member of the choir, gifted funds in her will to the Society. The concert is given in her memory.
John Rutter’s Mass of the Children was first performed on 13 February 2003 in Carnegie Hall, New York, conducted by the composer. As well as including traditional Latin texts the Mass also includes verse by Thomas Ken (1637- 1711), William Blake (1757 – 1827) and others. Seasons by Thomas Hewitt Jones is a cycle of movements about the seasons of the year using the words of four poets: D H Lawrence, William Shakespeare, Emily Brontë Zaira Palumbo in performance with and Paul Williamson. Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society The performance will be conducted by musical director David Ballard with soloists Zaira Palumbo (soprano) and Isaac Cooper (baritone). Zaira is also the musical director of Broadland Youth Choir which was Broadland Youth Choir formed 30 years ago email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to announce that Sir Norman Lamb has agreed to be the new President of the Society. He follows in the footsteps of Lord Robin Walpole and the celebrated opera singer, Ian Wallace. He takes up the role as the choir prepares to celebrate its Emerald Anniversary in 2023, marking 90 years of bringing the joy of choral singing to north Norfolk. Sir Norman says: “I am delighted to be the new President of the Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society. I am acutely aware of the difference that listening to music or singing can have in improving our mental health, whether it is reducing stress or helping those with dementia, and the last two years of the Covid-19 pandemic have in particular highlighted the positive impact the creative arts can have on our health and wellbeing. Now that public performances are able to take place again, it is really important when we can to attend and support these events.”

Disposal of Holt Hall
North Norfolk Railway
An agreement has been reached for the sale of Holt Hall, with an additional £1m made available to support education in Norfolk. The sale marks the end of an extensive and thorough bidding processes which saw more than 20 parties submit proposals for the site.
This follows the decision in 2020 to close Holt Hall which was used by fewer than three percent of Norfolk’s children each year. The service was running at a three-year deficit of £270,000 and required £600,000 of maintenance to continue operating.
The chosen buyer put together a substantial financial offer, well in excess of other bidders. When selling an asset, councils are obligated to seek the ‘best value’. Where the difference between two viable bids is more than £2m the council cannot accept the lower bid without permission from the Secretary of State. Cllr Greg Peck, Cabinet Member for Commercial Services and Asset Management said: “This sale secures a significant return for Norfolk tax-payers on a property that was losing money every year.”
“We recognise that some of the other proposals could have retained Holt Hall as a centre for education and that this will be disappointing for those who have close ties to the building. The additional £1m will be used to support the education of children across the county and will ensure a lasting legacy.” Proposals for how the funding will be used are being developed by the county’s education and communities teams. The aim will be to improve the provision for children who cannot attend school, due to ill health, exclusion or for any other reason. The identity of the buyer and the amount being paid currently remain commercially confidential.
Councillor Eric Vardy said: “The exchange is still in the hands of solicitors and subject to a final decision at Norfolk County Council through their scrutiny committee. If the sale goes through, I am working hard to find a positive outcome for the children of North Norfolk”.

We’d also like to thank Competitive Electrical Works for offering to install it for us and The Reef Leisure Centre for offering us some free training on how to use it.
It is hoped that training on use of the Defibrillator will be given to both clubs that use the Playing Field, EAST COAST WARRIORS & CROMER YOUTH FC along with locals from BODHAM and surrounding VILLAGES. We would like to give huge thanks to the following local businesses for their support:

Gresham in Wartime
Lost and Found
Dear Jo, Last week we spent 4 nights on a coach holiday break staying in Newquay, Cornwall at the Pentire Hotel. In the entrance hall was a surprising piece of information which comprised a plaque on the wall and some framed photographs. The plaque stated, “This plaque commemorates the wartime evacuation of Gresham School, Holt to the Pentire Hotel during the years 1940-1944…the threat of German invasion meant Norfolk beaches were a possible bridgehead and the boys of Gresham School were sent home.” “ The joint efforts of the Fishmonger’s company and headmaster Philip Newell, staff and senior boys meant the school could re-open at the Pentire and Bay hotels.” They returned to Holt at the end of 1944.
Dear Jo, I am hoping that one of your readers might be able to help me identify the lady who recently lost an attractive piece of jewellery in the churchyard at Edgefield. I am sure she is saddened to have mislaid it, but she can be reassured that I found it and have it in safekeeping. I look forward to returning it just as soon as I know who she is! If anyone has any information, please contact me on 01263 824854. Thank you!
Lorraine
Thank you
Dear Jo, I feel that I must write and thank whoever is responsible for the wonderful show of tubs of plants and ”swathes” of daffodils to be seen in High Kelling at present. It is a delight to drive that way. What a lovely idea! Yours faithfully,
There may still be a few people in Holt who remember this time. Apparently, there is more information in the book “Gresham in Wartime” by Philip Newell & Bernard Sankey. Yours sincerely, Carol Cross (Aylsham)

North Norfolk Children’s Author Signs Two Book Deal for Mystery Thrillers!
And what exactly happened to the punk superstar, Betzy Blac?
Phil has previously published The Little Blue Boat children’s series set on the Broads, which were nominated for the Norfolk Arts Awards and produced as a play.
Former Radio Norfolk, BBC Look East and ITV Anglia reporter, producer and newsreader Phil Johnson, has had his debut mystery thriller published on March 31st by London based, Burning Chair Publishing.
Phil said: “I loved writing and telling the stories of The Little Blue Boat and Able Sea Bear Teddy, but I want to write fast moving action thrillers which offer escapism, entertainment and excitement. My stories are for rainy days and lonely nights, sunny beaches and poolside cafes. They’re for anyone who enjoys great locations and gripping tales, with protagonists you want to fall for, laugh with and cry for, knowing that however bad it looks, my heroes will win through in the end, and… there’s a Hollywood ending waiting to be revealed!
Killer in the Crowd is a fast-moving, action-packed thriller set in the raw underbelly of the music scene. Local locations include the UEA LCR and a bus hijacking near Dereham! It’s been described by singer songwriter Steve Harley of Cockney Rebel as: “Utterly compelling… (with) an ending that comes like a bolt from the blue. Mystery in the music world!” And, by Norfolk author and broadcaster Nick Crane as: “A real escapist page-turner with plenty of plot twists, oodles of drama and a compelling cast. Terrific.”
Phil’s second thriller: “Run to the Blue” is another high-octane thriller with the story of TV reporter Tess Anderson, running from killers and spies, helped by a mysterious American yachtsman on a roller-coaster ride around the Greek islands. It’s due to be published this summer.
Killer in the Crowd begins when schoolteacher Cath Edgley, hears the shocking news that fading rock star Raven Rain has been murdered. To Cath, Raven Rain is more than just a picture on a magazine – he was also the ex-lover of her missing mother, Betzy Blac, lead singer of ’80s punk girl band, Décolleté. A woman who went missing over 30 years ago. Warned by a string of mystery text messages to “trust no one”, Cath is inspired to solve the mystery of her mum’s disappearance, once and for all. Along the way, she finds herself in a new role, the unwitting replacement lead singer for her mum’s old band on their first tour in 30 years. Can Cath find the killers before she becomes their next victim? Are the superstars she encounters all that they seem?

Bodham and Beckham Horticultural Show 2022
The profits from the show will go towards Bodham & Beckham Over 70's Christmas Lunch, which also had to be cancelled in 2020 & 2021. We hope our regular band of helpers on the day will still be available. In the meantime, we hope you will be 'Sowing and Growing, Baking and Making' so we can have a bumper show this year.
The recent lovely Spring weather has allowed us to get into the garden again and brought the Horticultural Show into our minds. The last two years the Show has had to be cancelled due to the pandemic; and in 2021 it was cancelled very close to the date. This meant that everything was in place: sponsorship money donated, schedules printed and volunteers organised. So, we are going to amend the date on the printed schedule and run last year's planned Show on Saturday 23rd July 2022. Our Sponsors kindly allowed us to keep their donations to use this year. They are: Allards Butchers of Holt Crayford & Abbs East and West Beckham Solar Community Fund Homeopathic Supply Company Kelling Heath Holiday Park North Norfolk's Garden Machinery & Holt Mobility Centre Ltd R C Wright Ltd Woodlands Caravan Park We are very grateful for their generous help.
The Show is open to all, you will be made very welcome. Schedules will be distributed in June to residents of Bodham and Beckham, if you reside elsewhere and wish to take part, please request a schedule from Shirley & Alan. Shirley & Alan Prince E:aprince@btconnect.com T:01263 588235

Holt Rotary Raise Funds for Ukraine
Holt Rotary has raised an amazing £2,750 in support of Ukraine. Abi Spicer_Layout 1 04/07/2021 17:06 the Page 1 On Saturday 12 March Holt Rotary celebrated its' 65th Year with a dinner held at the Pheasant Hotel. During evening club members, friends, family, and guests dug deep into their pockets and donated an amazing £2,750 to help support those most in need, due to the tragic events taking place in the Ukraine. Holt Rotary and the Rotary Clubs of East Anglia are working together to help those most in need in Ukraine. 100% of the monies raised go directly to this cause. Holt.Rotary.Secretary@gmail.com

Holt Rotary Aid North Norfolk Food Bank
Following lunch at Gresham's School on 8th March, Michele Bishop, a Trustee of North Norfolk Food Bank, Cromer, gave an enlightening talk to Holt & District Rotary. The Food Bank serves an area of some 200 square miles helping the neediest people who have been referred to them by schools, Citizens Advice Bureau, Social Services and NNDC, in addition to a network of charities. Aided by some 200 volunteers, the Bank also helps with energy emergency schemes, aiding schools to set up breakfast clubs, providing Christmas boxes and helping the homeless. They have seen an increase in referrals of over 150% in the last year which will increase further in April when the hike in energy prices takes effect. Holt Rotary, who have supported the Bank in the past, presented a donation of £500 to Michele to help fund their much-needed services. Holt.Rotary.Secretary @gmail.com

High Kelling Garden Club
The money has been spent on some training equipment, off set insurance costs, subsidise coaches’ lifesaving certificates and child protection courses and subsequently kept core costs down, albeit for a short period, which in turn has kept swimmers' fees frozen. At the same time, the club has been making an effort by doing their own fund raising and not just relied on this grant alone. This has given the club just enough time to recover from the lock down periods. Chair of the club Sarah Buchan said:
“Excuse the puns, but this grant has been a lifeline and helped us to keep afloat, otherwise we may have gone under. We would like to thank the Norfolk Community Foundation for their generous assistance." As a result, Vikings have also been able to obtain a new notice board which they hope to display in the Victory or when the Reef in Sheringham "opens a window" for them to train there. Subsequently, more youngsters will benefit from what the club has to offer and keep up to date with the club’s activities.

On Monday 14th March, Julia Dovey, a garden volunteer at Felbrigg, came to talk to us about the work volunteers do there and some recent changes to the garden. Winter can be a very busy time in the 4.5 acre walled garden and the 4.5acre woodland garden at the back of The Hall. Routine pruning is done and the double borders are mulched with a thick layer of garden compost. As not enough is produced to treat the whole garden, the vegetable beds receive mushroom compost - containing lime, it is better suited to growing vegetables. The gardens follow a no dig system, relying on soil organisms to pull the mulch into the sandy soil below. Moving towards spring, volunteers sow and pot on herbaceous and bedding plants and sow vegetables both indoors and directly into the ground. Rows must be straight and supporting canes all the same height! Succession planting throughout the season means the beds and borders always look full. Bulbs and flowers are also grown for floral displays for The Hall. In very dry weather, the borders are watered. Traditionally, this would have been from the central dipping pond, fed by rainwater from the glasshouse roofs. Winter is also a time when new projects get underway. This winter, the gravel borders in the south lawn area have been widened to accommodate more exotics and, much to the relief of the volunteers, the new plants will be labelled. Once the bantam hens can be released from their bird flu lockdown, they will move into a new hen house in the walled garden - an exact miniature of the dovecote, made by one of the volunteers. Whatever your capabilities, there is always a job you can do as a garden volunteer. Our next meeting is on Monday 11th April – refreshments from 6.45pm (bring your own mug), the AGM at 7.15pm, then a presentation of members’ garden photos.

Viking Swimmers Take Notice
North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club are making excellent use of a grant they have been awarded by Norfolk Community Foundation. Youngsters from the club come from a variety of backgrounds and from the wider community. It has helped the club to recover from Covid whilst sadly other community clubs have not survived.

Pigmentation treatments from Coltishall Clinic. Your complexion blending and brightening options for flawless skin.
sunscreen and lightening agents is often recommended. Most benign pigmentation and pigmented lesions however can be treated very successfully.
A uniform skin tone and texture is desired by many irrespective of their colour and considered a sign of skin health. Hyperpigmentation on the other hand, a disorder with increased pigmentation can cause patients great distress, and often requires treatment in a multimodal manner using effective combination. Hyperpigmentation is a medical term used to describe darker patches of skin. These patches result from excess melanin production, which can be caused by a number of reasons including excessive sun exposure, hormone fluctuations, genetics, injuries, inflammation or disorders such as melasma. A careful evaluation and diagnosis of cause of pigmentation is important. Response to treatment can be variable and recurrence very common so some kind of maintenance such as long-term use of

We can evaluate type, location and depth of pigmentation in the skin and this guides what treatments we may recommend. This may include sun protection, skin creams such as lightening creams/ serums, vitamins B, niacinamide, vitamin C and vitamin A products such as retinols. Treatment recommendations are tailored to your unique requirements. Gentle skin peels and microdermabrasion may also be recommended. Next up are options such as micro needling which can be combined with use of mesotherapy. Here pigment-lightening agents are used in combination for enhanced penetration into skin for better effect. These may include hyaluronic acid, glutathione, vitamins, azelaic acid etc. We have a variety of high tech lasers that have been used successfully for pigmentation treatment. These lasers have added benefit for improving skin texture and tone and reducing scarring such as from acne and also reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. These can provide nice complexion blending and brightening.
Some general recommendations are to use good skin care, cleansers, exfoliate and moisturise. Using sun-protection with a broad spectrum SPF-30 or above. Avoid skin products that sting or burn as inflammation is not good. Avoid picking and scratching your skin. Of course good hydration diet and avoiding smoking is important too.
Coltishall Clinic is well equipped with multiple lasers and non-laser technology so we can device a customised treatment programme based on your unique characteristics. There are also many innovative gentle treatments such as mesotherapy on offer so why not come and see us and start your journey towards a flawless skin. Getting Going
Want to make new friends and have fun while mastering a new skill?
Last month I featured those bowls players who have kept fit and nimble during the winter months by playing indoors. For the rest of us we now need to get back to business by warming up in April. To help wake us up we hold our “pre-season meeting”, to review all the plans for the new season and to renew friendships from last year. A spring clean of the clubhouse and surrounds to the green then make us ready to get going properly. A whole fortnight of afternoon “roll-ups” (very uncompetitive and drawing out of the hat for partners) will remind us of how to play. One difference this year is that, much earlier than usual, we host a friendly match against a visiting club; we welcome Newark Bowls Club towards the end of April on their bowling tour of the County. Hopefully they will be as out of practice as we are!
Why not come along to High Kelling Village Hall and try your hand at Short Mat Bowls in a warm, friendly environment, with refreshments provided.
We are offering free afternoon taster sessions with expert tuition from experienced players. If you would like to find out more or book a taster session contact Lyn on 01263 713898 or Tony on 01263 713119

Rowing Is Back at Blakeney!
Those of you who have been walking in the area around Blakeney Harbour may have noticed the two beautiful, freshly painted rowing skiffs – Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket – next to each other in the dinghy park. Rowing has returned to Blakeney, after winter activity on The Broads, and already there have been several thoroughly enjoyable outings towards Blakeney Point. The boats being rowed alongside each other is a particularly pleasing sight. The image accompanying this article shows Hoi Larntan beached at Pinchen’s Creek whilst the crew enjoys a well-earned coffee and biscuit break a short distance away. What a great way to spend one’s time in the open air as the warmer weather approaches. Many thanks to all those club members who worked so hard to prepare the skiffs for the summer season of rowing. Thanks also to those who towed the skiffs to various storage points. All such “behind the scenes” work is much appreciated. There will be several competitive events over the coming months: races in Blakeney and Morston, King’s Lynn and, of course, the Great River Race in London. View the club website on crablakeney.wordpress.com to see how the club’s crews fare on these occasions. There will be some excellent pictures to give you a sense of the excitement to be gained from participating in skiff rowing. It has been very encouraging to welcome so many new faces to the club. Why not get in touch to try skiff rowing for yourselves? There is no obligation to compete. The social rows always provide great exercise and fun. If this sounds good to you then contact captain Humphrey at hborgnis@icloud.com to arrange a trial row. New rowers, or those returning to the sport, will be looked after. Besides viewing the website, find out more about the club’s activities on Instagram and on Facebook. Come and join the “Crabbers” on the water this year. Until then, best wishes and stay safe. Barry Howes.

Locomotive No. 20227 “Sherlock Holmes” Returns to North Norfolk Railway to Help Haul Special Dining Trains to Cromer
Locomotive No. 20227 has arrived back at the North Norfolk Railway in readiness for the return of the line’s popular Cromer dining trains which will run on selected Wednesdays and Thursdays from May to September, and which see the Locomotive No. 20227 “North Norfolkman” dining train run on the being unloaded. Credit mainline from Sheringham to Cromer and back in Graham Hukins addition to making a return trip on the heritage railway’s tracks to Holt. The locomotive dates from 1968 when it was the last of the type built. In all, 228 Class 20s were constructed by English Electric from 1957 until 1968 making them one of the most successful early diesels. They were used extensively on freight trains seeing only occasional use on passenger work – sometimes for summertime specials to seaside resorts such as Skegness. The engine is now owned by the Class 20 Locomotive Society which has saved three of the heritage diesels and arrived at Sheringham by road after almost a year away from the North Norfolk undertaking mainline work and then visiting the Epping Ongar Railway for six months visit to assist with their trains. “Sherlock Holmes” is no stranger to special trains hauled a number of commemorative trains for London Underground in the mid2000s and sports the eye-catching maroon livery carried by Metropolitan Railway locomotives. Commercial Manager Graham Hukins said, “We are very pleased to have ‘Sherlock Holmes’ back on the line. The special trains to Cromer need a locomotive at each end as it’s not possible to move an engine from one end to the other at Cromer Station so 20227 will head the trains as they leave our tracks and head across Sheringham Level crossing and onto Network Rail’s Bittern Line while a steam engine will be at the back ready for the return journey. “20227’s use won’t be limited to the Cromer trips though, she will also be in use at some of our special events this summer and will also work alongside the line’s steam fleet on a number of other days,” he added. Full details of the line’s services, including the special dining trains can be found at www.nnrailway.co.uk.

Probate fees increase in England and Wales by up to 76%
From the 26th of January 2022, the Ministry of Justice has introduced a flat rate fee of £273 for probate applications. Previously, this was set at £155 if applied for by solicitors and £215 for those who applied directly.
This comes after extensive waiting times in processing applications during the pandemic. On average it took people 12 to 14 weeks to receive their grant in 2020 which of course adds huge inconvenience to those already dealing with the death of a loved one.

and we have a team of specialist private client lawyers who can help you through every stage of probate applications.
A spokesman from the Ministry of Justice has stated "These fees will fully fund our investment in a first-class digital probate service to ensure shorter waiting times, fewer user and administrative errors, and a better experience for families."

However, some are concerned that this may in fact have the opposite effect. As there are now the same fees whether or not you use a professional to help you with your application, the Law Society anticipates that this will lead to more people doing the applications without the help of a solicitor. The consequence of this is that this will have a higher chance of mistakes and errors from those that do not have expertise in dealing with this area.
