Luke Wright at the Holt Festival

A Note from the Editor

Well, now we have dried out a bit perhaps we can get on with Summer. The predicted ‘staycation’ is certainly keeping the town busy and is nice to see our local traders doing well. There are lots of charity events, village fetes and activities happening, so even if you can’t get away there are lots of things to go and do while enjoying the sun and our lovely county.

It is often said that it is a mistake to try to repeat a success, but experience shows that that is not the case, we often go to the same holiday destinations, eat in the same restaurant, watch the same TV programmes and films, and listen to the same music over and over again, with repetition comes confirmation, and often a deepening of affection, appreciation, and understanding.

Whilst enjoying the weather please remember the advice on water safety, the RNLI website: https://rnli.org/safety gives lots of advice on keeping safe, do take time to have a look. Whatever you are doing, enjoy your August magazine. Keep safe and well.

Jo – Editor.

Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines. Month September October November

Copy deadline Tuesday 31st August Tuesday 28th September Tuesday 26th October

DO YOU NEED HELP?

That is certainly so in the case of Luke Wright, who opened the literary and performance part of Holt Festival – in the newly refurbished and sparkling Venue (Holt Arts Centre) in front of an excited, capacity audience, clustered around (socially distanced) cabaret style tables. This was not because he repeats the same material and performance year after year, he does not, each year he brings a new show, of new material, delivered from memory with even more professionalism, conviction and confidence, qualities that have grown, not as an assumed persona but as the embodiment of who he is, with his own personality shining through and bringing it all alive.

Luke gave us a fantastic evening, a ‘tour-de-force’, with a string of brilliant show piece poetic ballads or spoken word stories, based on Georgian Broadsheets (think of our tabloids written – in their case – in dodgy rhyme), linked by wonderfully engaging and inclusive between-item banter and intros. He had the whole audience eating out of his hand.

Publishing date Friday 10th September Friday 8th October Friday 5th November

I have seen him perform here in Holt four times now, (and additionally as part of the local Primary School Poetry Slams), and year on year his shows have just got more and more masterly, honing his own unique special ‘voice’ into a hugely enjoyable, even instructive, evening, which on this occasion was like a wonderfully bright light at the end of the long, dark, art-starved corridor of lock-down. He is the kind of poet, and his is the kind of work and event, that gives poetry a great name. So, it was with the wider festival itself. Working on slender means and under the usual huge financial constraints, there was something for everyone, (all be-it that, that you have to shelve preconceptions and take a look), giving those starved of the arts over the last year, a chance to feast their eyes and ears on a little of what they fancy – because it sure does do you good.

If you have a living crisis, we can help you with: • Emergency Food Parcels • Accessing Local Agencies • Your Energy Bills Contact Cromer District Foodbank on 07826 376343 Email: info@cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk www.cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk

Holt Festival sadly shaved down this year, more than other years, due to constraints and uncertainty, somehow glowing and glittering even more intensely, lighting an important local beacon or torch for the arts, like a gem in the covid dark. As always, we must thank a small group of local enthusiasts and volunteers who every year, give enormous amounts of time, energy and effort, into putting together a programme of events which they hope will tickle the fancies of the community and provide a generous taste of artistic nourishment, which lasts often days, even for weeks to come.

If you weren’t able to enjoy the festival this year, or perhaps thought you had seen or heard it all before, do put a marker in your diary for next year. It is and was a little treat - for many of us a necessary one - with Holt Festival, increasingly the kind of festival that gives the arts and festivals a good name. With a huge thank you to Anwen Hurt, the festival’s artistic director, and to the festival trustees and volunteers. From a quietly glowing festival attendee, Phil Barrett

A Plea to Gardeners

Yesterday evening, we heard some very sad news from our neighbours. A female hedgehog, they named "Roxy", who they found out in the daytime and very underweight last autumn and who returned from the rescue centre in the spring as a large, healthy sow, ready for release back into the wild, was discovered listless, panting and dying this week. The vet confirmed her symptoms were typical of poisoning, probably from slug pellets.

creatures have been poisoned too. Another neighbour has found dead or dying rats on his lawn, presumably from eating poison bait from a feeding station. Hedgehogs and many birds will feed on carrion and their maggots and therefore ingest the poison. Even "harmless" slug pellets will ultimately accumulate enough in the food chain to kill our increasingly rare British animals. If you feel the need to control pests, there are far better, physical rather than chemical, ways that will do the job. It is encouraging that many of Holt's residents garden responsibly to safeguard the environment, yet the few that are happy to use pesticides to create for themselves a pristine, sanitised garden make our efforts futile.

Our neighbours have, during the pandemic, turned their small garden into a haven for wildlife. They supply suitable food and water for birds Last night, I crept out and hedgehogs, they have cut hedgehog-sized holes into their barge at dusk to find a small boards along their boundaries so that the animals can roam freely hedgehog eating in our across their large territories, and they have installed a couple of hedgehog cafe (our hedgehog nest boxes. News from The Venue

What a fabulous Holt Festival we have had this year, and how welcome it was to see the Arts in all their glory across the town. We were blown away by the positive responses of visitors to The Venue, both for the Festival and the Habitats Exhibition, which has had amazing success and sold a great number of paintings. A huge thank you again to Vanda Richards and Nicholas Elliott for putting their faith in the Venue to deliver not only a great exhibition space but also a good number of people visiting and buying paintings. It has been a real pleasure to have 2 such lovely artists in The Venue Gallery for the last 2 weeks, and I’m so pleased at their success! And it was such a privilege to be host to some amazing Holt Festival acts, everything from Theatre to music to comedy. The standard was incredible, and each performance welcomed good audience numbers who enjoyed their visits immensely. After the two lockdowns it felt wonderful to welcome people back and see everyone enjoying themselves again. A huge thank you to the Holt Festival for choosing the Venue to participate, and to the amazing Festival volunteers who worked so hard alongside us to ensure the smooth running of each event, and of course to Anwen Hurt for your indefatigable energy and expertise at putting on such an amazing Festival despite the huge challenges of the last year.

We are thrilled to be welcoming Stage Direct to the Venue to kickstart our new Community Theatre programme, with 2 plays over 2 days. Tickets are £10 and are available from our office in advance, and the bar is open from 6.30pm, with performances both evenings starting at 7.30pm. We have waited over a year to begin Theatre at the Venue, and we hope as time goes on to facilitate and develop more Community Theatre in Holt. Our Cinema is opening again this month, with a showing of Love Sarah, a great feel-good movie. Do come and see it on the big screen – it makes such a difference and is a great night out for only £5.00. A team from hearfornorfolk.org.uk will be on the drive outside the Venue again on 23rd August from 10am to 12pm to share tea, cake and

There are two types of LPA:

When is ‘next of kin’ not enough? By Jennifer Taylor,

• Health and welfare, which authorises your attorneys to make decisions about your medical treatment and health care, and; • Property and financial affairs, which authorises your attorneys to make decisions about your property and finances.

Solicitor, Hayes + Storr

Whilst you may anticipate that your spouse, children, or other close relatives can access your finances or have a say in your medical care should you become mentally and/or physically incapacitated, this is not necessarily the case.

What happens if you don’t have an LPA and lose mental capacity?

Next of kin

Many services will ask for details of your next of kin. There are no clear legal rules as to who you can name as your next of kin, and they do not necessarily have to be a blood relative. Naming a person as your next of kin does not grant them any legal rights or responsibilities. Rather, organisations ask for their details, so they know who to keep informed about your care.

Legal position

All of your affairs, financial and medical, must be kept confidential and may only be released to certain persons, in certain circumstances. The law is designed to help everyone retain their independence for as long as possible. However, later in life, you might need additional help. For example, during the early stages of dementia when the decline of mental capacity happens gradually but you can still understand and make your own choices.

If you lose mental capacity, and you have not made an LPA, then then someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to become your deputy. There are several reasons why LPAs are a better option than a deputyship: • An LPA allows a person to choose who they want to make decisions for them, but a person has no control over who is appointed as their deputy. • A deputyship is more expensive. • Deputyships for health and welfare are rarely ordered by the court, whereas an attorney can be appointed under an LPA to make decisions with respect to a person’s health and welfare. • It can take a long time to apply for a deputyship in comparison to making an LPA.

Without valid documents in place, no person, including your next of kin, can make these decisions for you during your lifetime.

For further information, please call Jennifer Taylor on 01263 712835 or email: Jennifer.taylor@hayes-storr.com.

How to ensure your next of kin does have legal rights

One way to give a person legal rights and empower them to deal with your affairs during your lifetime is by appointing them under a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA).

You can arrange LPAs at any time, so long as you have mental capacity. LPAs should therefore be created in advance rather than leaving it until your health deteriorates.

Dear friends, In medieval England, the village of Little Walsingham, was a renowned holy place of pilgrimage and thankfully it remains so today. Founded in the 11th century and thought to be the oldest shrine in the world dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, thousands of people continue be drawn to pray at the Shrine each year. Now people can journey on foot from Norwich to England’s Nazareth, as the village became known, along a newly defined route called the Walsingham Way. Initiated by Norwich Cathedral working in partnership with others, this new 37mile route, beginning at either the Anglican or Roman Catholic Cathedrals in Norwich, takes pilgrims out of the city and through beautiful Norfolk countryside, along the river valleys of Wensum and Stiffkey, encountering medieval churches along the way and finally onto holy ground in the village of Walsingham itself. The route encourages people to get out into the countryside and make a journey to a special place. Of course, the journey is as important as arriving at the destination. The people you journey with and the experiences along the way all help create a sense of wellbeing which is so often expressed by those who embark on a pilgrimage. Pilgrims come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, some have faith and some have none, yet making a pilgrimage can be beneficial to our emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing who ever we are. Interest in making a pilgrimage continues to grow steadily. Television programmers following celebrity pilgrims and documentaries have helped fuel this renewed interest. The route from Norwich to Walsingham can be walked in 3 days and the Bishop of Norwich has already made the journey and no doubt many others will follow. I very much hope a group from the parish will walk the Walsingham Way later this year. If you are interested in joining me, please let me know. Watch this space!

Every blessing Fr. Howard

“As I walked the lanes and fields of Norfolk there was an inner unwinding from the tensions of the pandemic. As I approached Walsingham I was conscious that I was in step with countless others through history, singing with Mary that ‘my spirit rejoices in God’. I hope that many people will put on their walking shoes and set out. May this new pilgrim route help them find joy and hope.’ Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Revd Graham Usher

Not a council development

Dear Jo, I feel I owe it to readers and to the District Council to state that the Lodge Farm housing scheme off Beresford Road, Holt, to which I referred in my letter on July 16th, is emphatically not a council development, as stated in the headline. It is the scheme of a private company that describes itself as "the most successful land promoter in the UK". According to the national press, Gladman Developments Ltd. buys farmland and resells it to developers by a multiple of 50 or 60 with planning permission for building.

I clearly stated that North Norfolk District Council, as the the planning authority, roundly rejected this scheme, both at the initial application and at the public inquiry into Gladman's appeal, but the inquiry inspector dismissed the council's objection. In this case Gladman even applied for the district council (i.e. the local taxpayers) to pay the cost of his appeal against the council's when his scheme defies the local development plan, but this was rejected by the planning inspectorate.

The result of this appeal, contrary to the local plan, appears to be a bad decision. The council and residents, who know the local situation, fear the consequences of what could be a good example of bad town planning. Here we shall have a primary school on the very edge of town and a new estate of 110 houses with sole road access 'on the cheap' through existing approaches, obstructed by lines of parked cars in normal times, and ultimately through a minor side street of an existing estate instead of a dedicated vehicular access direct from Norwich Road, if that were possible.

We now await with interest the detailed planning apllication for the design of the new estate. However good the design might be, its weak point will be the vehicular access. The new estate could also prove to be an unsustainable addition to this small town with its limited car parking, employment, shopping and health services, a town already hemmed about with many unsold new houses.

David Gladman and the planning inspector, Rachel Norman, will not have to live with this decision but the local residents will have to put up with the consequences, in terms of noise and congestion, for the rest of our lives.

Cedric Greenwood

circumstances.

Holt WI

Holt WI held its Summer Garden Party in the garden of Paula Hewitt on Wednesday 21st July, the first meeting since March 2020 due to Covid. It was a joy to be able to meet again after such a long break and in such delightful

It was a lovely day, perfect for relaxing in the sun, chatting with friends and eating the delicious tea of sandwiches and homemade cakes, which were provided by committee members. Afterwards, the President, Bridget Cuthbert, gave a little talk on the future of Holt WI and upcoming events and there was a raffle and a fun quiz, called In Which Year, which caused a lot of laughter and racking of brains. email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Additional Thoughts

Dear Jo I would like to endorse the comments made by Cedric Greenwood and emphasise that Council Leader Sarah Butikofer, and our Local MP, Duncan Baker, presented a really compelling case to the Inspector. I would merely add these thoughts: 1. Gladman Developments advised NNDC Officers that the appropriate measure to mitigate against the increased Highway hazard on the roads giving access to the new School, is to paint double yellow lines on all the roads affected, and to increase a police presence to reduce street parking by local residents! 2. The number of children on the school site is not the 420 as described in the Application, but 470 - NCC intend to build a nursery school on the site to accommodate a further 50 children Highway judgements made on the basis of advice given by consultants were based on a significant understatement of pupil numbers 3. NCC Cabinet have already considered and approved proposals from Education Officers that will lead to the closure of the Pilgrim Foundation Schools with the pupils relocated to the new School at Holt Just because the Inspector was in Norfolk, she didn’t need to imitate Nelson Richard Carter

Thank You

Dear Jo, Can I, through your Readers Write page express my sincere thanks to Jason Luke for the most excellent valeting job that he has done on my car on the hottest day of the year. A young man who obviously knows how to “clean and shine”. Highly recommend him. Also, thanks to HACS for footing the bill most grateful.

Sincere Thanks

Dear Jo, I wish to offer my sincere thanks to all friends and neighbours for all the kindness shown to me Diana Kirby and my daughter Nichola on the sad death of Monica Ann Juby, on the 5th of March 2021. We were fortunate enough to have her at home. Thank you everyone for your kindness. Nichola and I were more than grateful to receive the cards and flowers, and to receive their esteem shown to Monica.

Thank you from, Diana Kirby

At the end a vote of thanks was given to Paula and her husband Ted, for the use of chairs, cushions and mugs and the lovely garden.

The next meeting will be held as usual at The Holt Community Centre on August 18th at 2pm. There will be a talk and demonstration on Flower Arranging, given by Gill Tullie.

New members are always welcome to meetings which are held at The Holt Community Centre on the third Wednesday of the month at 2pm until 4. The Holt Chronicle August 2021

Sprinkle all the spices and seasoning over the fish, then rub in the ginger and garlic and one teaspoon of the oil. Heat the remaining oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat. Dust the fish with the flour on both sides. Place the fish into the pan, reduce the heat slightly and fry for four minutes. Turn over and fry for another 3-4 minutes, or until cooked through and crisp. To serve, place the fish onto serving plates and squeeze over some lemon juice; we add lovely seasonal vegetables from John's garden courgettes and beans are amazing at the moment!

The Holt Chronicle August 2021

Totally Tofoo!

Hear me out….Tofu is an incredible ingredient; versatile, affordable and really good for you. I know it seems a little weird, and I used to think that until I actually tried cooking with it. It is an amazing protein source, takes up flavours well, has a wonderful texture and once you’ve learned a couple of tricks for preparing it, I promise you, you will want to use it again and again! I went on a similar journey recently with lentils, and they are now one of my main ingredients. We all have a responsibility to feed ourselves well and choosing to eat plant based at least a couple of times a week is so good for your gut health, not to mention your heart. I only use the Tofoo brand, simply because it has the best texture, flavours and is already pressed so is simpler to prepare. Other brands need to be pressed to remove as much moisture as possible before using, and to be honest, anything that saves me time is a winner. Arm yourself with some Tamari (a type of soy sauce) as it pairs as a flavour so well and is an excellent cooking ingredient. The other secret is marinating; the longer you give it the better the outcome, but if you’re pushed for time, 10 minutes will do. This salad is a great blend of interesting textures and tastes, combining sweet and sour, crunchy and soft, and is incredibly filling and satisfying. The recipe below feeds 2 hungry people, or 3 moderately hungry people. In terms of jazzing up your summer salads this takes some beating! If you’ve never braved the tofu, now is the time.

Baked Tofu Super Salad

1 pack Tofoo Smoked Tamari Balsamic vinegar Olive oil Garlic salt Smoked paprika Onion salt Cornflour Salad leaves Pumpkin, Sesame and Sunflower seeds (enough to cover the bottom of your frying pan) Cucumber, tomato, peppers, spring onions, all chopped 1 eating apple, cored and chopped Chopped cornichons Sprouted seeds or cress Handful fresh mint and parsley leaves, chopped finely

STRESS - How to deal with it Stress can be very bad for you. Life is busy and challenging, especially with the uncertainty of Covid, but it’s HOW you respond to these stresses that makes the difference. If you often feel anxious and powerless, this can chronically switch on your “fight or flight” response, which over time can be very damaging to your health and wellbeing. However, no matter what your circumstances, there are things you can do to relieve the pressure and regain control. • Identify the real causes of your stress and be clear about your own role in creating and maintaining it – take responsibility. • Be realistic about risks and dangers and let go irrational anxiety. • Take regular exercise and activity – more fun and relaxation – spend more time in nature and the fresh air. • Connect with other people – face-to-face contact improves your wellbeing and resilience. • Reduce the stress – learn to be more assertive, spend less time with negative people and in stressful situations, manage your time better. • Change your perspective – look at the big picture, let go an attitude of perfectionism, do things differently • Accept what you can’t change and let go the past. • Adopt a healthy lifestyle – a good diet, regular exercise, enough sleep, and minimise sugar, alcohol, smoking etc. • Relax more effectively – learn mindfulness, meditation, self-hypnosis – these clear your mind, and help you feel calmer and more positive.

Method

Start by marinating your tofu; remove from packet and gently squeeze out any excess liquid, then chop into small cubes. Place in large bowl, and sprinkle on some splashes of tamari and balsamic vinegar, a small slug of olive oil, then add in a good heaped tsp smoked paprika and a good dusting of garlic and onion salt and stir well. Cover and leave to marinate. Preheat your oven to 180 ° and dust your tofu with a little cornflour, then transfer your tofu to a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper and put in the oven for approx. 15 – 20 mins, keeping an eye on it so it doesn’t burn (you want it a little crispy on the outside) Meanwhile, place your seeds in a non-stick frying pan on a moderate heat and gently toast, tossing occasionally and being careful not to burn them for about 5 mins. Add in a few splashes of both tamari and balsamic vinegar and stir to coat. Continue until the liquid has evaporated off, then place into a bowl to cool. Prepare your salad, mixing well. Top with the toasted seeds and baked tofu and dress with a little olive oil. Carolyn Burn

New Radio Station Set to Hit the Airwaves

It’s been almost a year since the demise of North Norfolk Radio and since then, there has been a huge gap in the airwaves above Overstrand, Sidestrand, Mundesley, Northrepps and Southrepps. That gap will soon be filled by a brand-new local community radio station called Poppyland Radio. Leap-frogging off the back of a lockdown initiative which saw a super-local weekly broadcast in Northrepps, a small team has been established and are working hard to get a bigger, stronger, more professional outfit up and running. With space being offered by the Belfry Centre for Music & Arts in Overstrand, there has already been interest by people wanting to host folk, brass, soul, local history, smallholding, school and classical shows.

Plans are well under way for an online launch in September, so this is a shout-out to anyone who’s interested or would like to get involved.

What would you like to hear on Poppyland Radio? What interests, skills or stories do you have to share with the community? Do you have a great idea for a show? Are you a techie? Can you edit audio? We need you! Are you a local business, school, attraction or special interest group that would like to feature in a show? Can you offer technical expertise or broadcast experience? Are you the next John Peel, Greg James or Zoe Ball? Presenters are needed! And most importantly, would you like to advertise or sponsor the station? Get in touch: Like us on Facebook or email info@poppylandradio.co.uk

Kellingside Woods Future is Safe

HIGH KELLING GARDEN CLUB

On Thursday 15th July, 24 members and guests of High Kelling Garden Club, met at the Treehouse Community Cafe in Charles Road for a cream tea and a short presentation, by co-director Lorna Berry, about the history of the project and the community garden.

The Planning Inspector has released his decision to approve the use of Kellingside Woods, Holt for Archery and Air Rifle uses, and to allow the existing buildings on site to remain. Owner Mr John Hancock and NNDC will be working together to complete the outstanding requirements of the Planning Inspectors Decision letter. The Council acknowledge and are supportive of the wider public benefits that have been delivered from the site through these uses of Kellingside Woods, Holt. This decision will deliver a sustainable and regulated future for Archery and Air Rifles on the site. Both NNDC & the landowners wish to move forward together, as post-Covid facilities which help both the local community and tourism will be essential. Mr Hancock said, “I am really pleased that we have come to a positive conclusion. The site can continue to provide both mental and physical help to those who need it. Post Covid, we as communities need to help each other and I hope that in some small way the site has done this.” The site offers an archery and air rifle range. Anyone can use the site and for a small fee can use the site’s equipment, receive safety advice and tuition. Visitors can bring their own equipment and pay a nominal fee for all day use of the site which covers the site’s expenses. The site is run as a not-for-profit concern. Mr Hancock hopes to improve the site further to include a sensory garden and provide a quiet space for visitors to wander and feel in touch with nature.

Only nine months ago, the garden was a grassy field and a huge pile of compost. Helped by a few volunteers and Gresham's students, flower beds were marked out, cardboard laid over the grass and compost heaped on top. Gradually, with donations of raised vegetable beds and plants and further help, including from various school and community groups who regularly visit, the garden has begun to emerge and flourish. Some of the garden club members brought along their gardening gloves, trowels and a plant, which they put into the garden after tea. The club also planted a cotoneaster bush, in memory of four members who have passed away since the start of the pandemic - John and Pam Green, Alice Boon and Doreen Hines. Members were also generous with money donations for the Treehouse Garden fund.

The club hopes to restart monthly evening meetings at High Kelling Village Hall in September. For more information, please contact Tanya on 07825 578321 or email hkgcsecretary@gmail.com.

Norfolk Open Studios Returns for 2021 with New Autumn Dates

Martin Pigg, photo credit Mosely Imagery

One of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country is returning to Norfolk this autumn. Makers and creators will be opening their studio doors across the county as part of Norfolk Open Studios. The well-loved annual event, which was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, will take place across 16 days in September and October, a change in dates for the event which will allow visitors to explore and

experience Norfolk in the autumn. More than 320 artists will be taking part across 267 venues to share and sell their work. Artists will be at work in their studios, garages, spare rooms, garden rooms, community spaces and schools sharing how they work. The free event annually attracts thousands of visitors and in 2019 more than 31,000 people flocked to studios across Norfolk to meet our county’s artists. Ros Dixon, Norfolk Open Studios Administrator, said: “We are so happy that Norfolk Open Studios is returning, a widely loved scheme that artists and visitors look forward to each year. 2021 will see it run at its new time in early autumn, allowing visitors to capture that special time of year as well as helping Norfolk Open Studios to develop a clear and bold identity as an autumn event. We can’t wait to be back in the studios, smelling the paint and kilns, getting to ask those questions we’ve always wanted to know from the artists themselves and maybe even having a go at creating something ourselves. And the chance to buy art direct from the artist is very special.” Artists at all stages of their careers take part, from school and college students through to emerging artists and established and professional artists and makers. Visitors will find painters, sculptors, weavers, furniture makers, jewellery makers and lots more throughout the varied landscapes of Norfolk. Alongside opening their studios, many artists will be offering events, demonstrations and workshops to share their skills and practice. This year the scheme will welcome 23 schools to the event as well as 13 Art Trails, allowing visitors to enjoy several studios in one day. Artists taking part could not be more excited to be opening their studios to visitors. Jenni Murphy, who is based at Muspole Workshops in Norwich, said: “Open Studios is the perfect platform to make art accessible in an industry that can sometimes feel too exclusive. I can’t wait to welcome everyone and offer them a fun, relaxed and happy environment in which to view art.” A preview exhibition will take place at The Forum between Tuesday 17th and Sunday 22nd August, offering visitors the chance to get a taste of what is on offer and plan their Open Studios visits. The free exhibition is open 9.30am – 6pm daily, closing at 4pm on Sunday 22 August. Ros Dixon said: “The Preview Exhibition at the Forum is always exciting and inspiring. It’s a chance to see work by so many of this year’s Norfolk Open Studios artists all under one roof and, for me, it’s when the scheme really comes alive. “You get to see so many art forms side-by-side, and there will always be something for everyone to enjoy. You also get to meet the artists in person throughout the week, it really demonstrates what Norfolk Open Studios is all about.” Norfolk Open Studios will take place between 25 September and 10 October 2021. For more information visit norfolkstudios.org.uk Norfolk Open Studios will be a part of Norfolk Wonder, a series of activities across the county this autumn presented by Norfolk & Norwich Festival. The Norfolk Wonder Jenni Murphy, programme is a part of a Norfolk photo credit Mark Ashby County Council initiative designed to attract audiences to Norfolk for experiential tourism in the off-season of October 2021 to March 2022.

The Reverend Roger Julian Hawkins Aged 88

2nd December 1932 -15th July 2021 Born in Sutton Surrey Educated at Whitgift School, Croydon Died at home – Holt, North Norfolk

Roger was a familiar face in his local church community in Holt. Having been ordained in 1960 and a parish priest since 1966, he never fully retired and was an active celebrant at St. Andrew the Apostle until the week of his death.

Roger first became a Christian following a near fatal crash while flying from RAF Coltishall in 1953. He was a navigator, trained at RAF Colerne in Wiltshire, and it was while based there that he met Josephine Parnham at an archaeology lecture in Bath. Within weeks the couple were engaged, and they married in January 1954.

Roger’s eldest child Fiona was born in February 1955 followed two years later by her sister Judith in June 1957. Through the mid-1950s, the family moved regularly with the RAF until Roger left the service to train as a priest at Ripon Hall, Oxford. While a curate in Wythenshawe, Manchester, Roger’s son Jonty was born in February 1962, followed by his brother, Piers in January 1965. By this time the family had been posted to Singapore. Roger had re-joined the RAF as a padre, and he once again saw active service during the Borneo campaign 1963 and 1966.

After a brief spell as padre at RAF St. Mawgan during 1966, Roger was invited to become Rector of St. Mawgan in Pydar. During this time, he was actively involved in the restoration of the 16th century Arundell brasses and is remembered for this in the church history and the Church Trails in Cornwall series. Roger was Rector of St Julitta’s, Lanteglos-by-Camelford, in North Cornwall from 1975, moving again to St. Mary’s Newmarket in late 1978. And back again to Coltishall where he became Rector of St. John the Baptist in 1985. His last appointment was to the village of Whiteley in Surrey where he served as Chaplain until his retirement in 1994.

During his retirement Roger remained active in the Winchester diocese on a voluntary basis, while living in Ringwood Hants and later Salisbury before moving to Holt in 2008. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Roger became very close to the Orthodox community and he and Josephine travelled widely with friends in the Anglican and Eastern Churches Association. His passion for religious artifacts and buildings, reflected in his remarkable needlepoint rendition of every cathedral in England, was rivalled only by his love of ornithology, an interest that started in his early teenage years. Roger is survived by Josephine and their four children.

Stage Direct

New Theatre Project Comes to The Venue The Venue Community and Arts Centre in Holt is soon to host a theatre show and hopes to offer theatre to the people of Holt on a regular footing. The centre in Holt has given the venture the thumbs up which will see the acclaimed Stage Direct amateur dramatics group take centre stage for two nights in September. The long-awaited arrival of Stage Direct amateur drama group’s next exciting production is almost upon us. Featuring a double bill of comedy, comprising two one act comedies performed back-to-back. (But of course, with an interval in-between). Now we are entering post Covid times, we can announce we can bring this feast of comedy to the stage for your entertainment. The first is called “If I Were You” written by Cromer man and amateur dramatics enthusiast David Starling, and the second comedy is called “Dedicated Sorrowers”, a published comedy, written by Sheringham man and Chairperson of Stage Direct amateur drama group, Nigel Manson. The shows will also be produced and directed by the same said duo. Nigel said “We’ve been waiting in the wings a long time for this opportunity to arise, and are delighted that we have been given this marvellous opening to show the people of Holt what Stage Direct are about” David said, “Like every other drama group, Stage Direct have been eager to be able to tread the boards again to entertain the masses”. As a first, and with the help from The Venue, they have

been given full support to go ahead with this project and look forward to welcoming the general public back again to enjoy theatre once more. Although they have not been able to prepare and or perform during the last year and a half, Stage Direct have been kept busy and have managed to keep their acting membership on their toes by exercising their acting talents, albeit via zoom meetings.

Stage Direct has recently run a recruiting campaign to encourage new members with multifarious talents to help prop up their membership and for help with the preparations of this new extravaganza. Covid restrictions have given the producers some headaches in so much as being able to rehearse safely etc. but as the producers of the show said, “nothing is insurmountable”.

The No 1 anti aging breakthrough of the decade is available at the Coltishall Clinic

CO2 fractional laser therapy is ideal for the treatment of sun damage, brown spots, fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity/texture and acne scars. Not only does this offer amazing results, but it does so safely and quickly with little downtime. The secret is out and the benefits speak for themselves. What will CO2 fractional laser do for me? If you have spent years in the sun, especially without adequate sun protection, then you know what it can do to your skin. Wrinkles, skin discolouration, sun spots, skin laxity may be reduced or eliminated with fractional laser. Also, if you have scars from acne or other skin injuries, then you may also be a candidate for this procedure. Now using this innovative new laser technology, less than 60 minutes in your doctor’s office may restore your skin’s youthful appearance. While the aging process cannot be stopped, with proper care you can maintain your rejuvenated skin’s appearance for many years!

www.holtchronicle.co.uk

We invite to come along with family and friends and look forward to seeing as many of our regular supporters as possible. Stage Direct

Patients are often amazed at how tight their skin feels immediately after the procedure.

This is a skin-resurfacing treatment known as CO2 fractional laser therapy. Its results beat any other non-CO2 laser skin rejuvenation technique.

How CO2 fractional laser is different This utilizes a ‘dot’ pattern to create thousands of microscopic perforations in the skin while leaving the areas around each ‘dot’ intact. This fractional laser allows for the skin to heal more quickly from the edge of these tiny ‘dots’. The overall procedure is safer, faster and more efficient.

The Group, during lockdown, kept their acting skills in good shape with zoom play readings among their members and were also joined by an acclaimed actor of TV and stage fame just for fun, which was great. The group have now settled down to some serious rehearsals; complete with new and very talented acting recruits in readiness for the performances which will run for two nights at The Venue in Holt on September the 17th and 18th 2021 starting at 7.30pm. Tickets will be available from The Venue, (usually in the mornings prior to these dates) and they will also be available from Hair by Solo at 4A Barford Road Sheringham. Subject to availability, tickets will be sold on the door on performance nights. Tickets cost £10.00. All sales must be cash. The tickets are unnumbered and will be sold on a first come first served unreserved basis. To reserve tickets please call Nigel at work on 01263 823433 (during the day) or email Nigel on solo.hair@virgin.net The group will move on to their next project almost immediately, which will be a farce called “Miss Marble Takes a Break” which will be performed at The Little Theatre, Sheringham in January 2022

What are the advantages over deep chemical peels [TCA and phenol]? We do not perform any deep chemical peels as it is not possible to achieve precise control with these and chance of complications is higher. Deep chemical peels also result in prolonged downtime. Lasers are precision tools and achieve better results more safely and consistently. Is fractional laser safe? CO2 dot fractional laser has received clearance from the US Food & Drug Administration. Fractional laser has less recovery than traditional laser resurfacing treatments. Because the fractional laser creates a shallower, wider pattern, it promotes rapid healing. Fractional laser is minimally invasive and extremely safe, while delivering excellent results.

Cromer Pier Show is Back!

North Walsham & Dilham Canal Trust Announce August Open Weekend

The North Walsham & Dilham Canal Trust have announced that their annual open weekend will this year be held on the 14th and 15th August at Ebridge Mill, on the North Walsham – Happisburgh Road. The popular annual event, paused due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, returns this year with a barbecue, a licensed bar and stands and exhibitions from local groups that make use of the canal, including information about the canal trust themselves, a charity in the process of restoring the nine-mile waterway. The event is free to attend, with displays including work by the Cromer Artspace group, miniature vessels on show from Ebridge Model Boat Club, wooden canoes from Norfolk Heritage Canoes and members of the local wild swimming club in attendance to chat with budding outdoor swimmers. The North Walsham & Dilham Canal Trust will also be running their regular boat tours (£7 per person), which run on other days throughout summer too. “We’re thrilled to announce the full return of our annual open day,” James Warner Smith of the North Walsham & Dilham Canal Trust commented. “There’s always a great attendance at the event and it’s a good opportunity for people to see the progress being made restoring the canal, as well as enjoying good food, real ales and the chance to meet other people passionate about the canal.” “There will be food and drink, toilet facilities and parking at Ebridge Mill Pond and there’s always a great buzz around the place as people gather and enjoy the Open Weekend exhibitions. The entire event is outdoors and well spread out. And this year, too, QR codes will allow people to make payments digitally if they prefer.”

Well, what a year that has been! I am sure that we all have our stories to tell and memories that will stay with us as we now rebuild for the future. For us, The Cromer Pier Show has always been a chance to try to bring a little joy and laughter into all of our lives and to take a little time out to indulge our sense of fun and play, whilst relishing many of the exceptional talents and artists who delight us. Every single one of us is thrilled that you are here and as much as we all need to earn a living, there is no greater reward to those of us in the business of entertainment than being able to delight you. We hope that we have included something here for all of you with as true a mix of variety and talent as we have ever managed to stage. We have chosen to leap into the future and invest in even more new production technology to help us present the artists with the most modern and up to date techniques. So, for those of you who know us from the past you may notice one or two “small” changes, we hope you enjoy them. Most notably of course we have moved from two shows to presenting you with a new Special Guest Act each week, giving the whole show anew flavour and dynamic and, for our regular repeaters, even more Variety!

All covid measures apply

Now you can see something new every week throughout the whole season whilst continuing to enjoy your favourite moments. Above all we would like to thank you for supporting us as we work to earn our place back in your hearts. We hope that you enjoy.

- Toll Barn Vets -

Here to Help!

Whether it‛s a dog or cat or rabbit, or an exotic reptile, fish or bird, Toll Barn Vets in North Walsham is on hand to help with your pets everyday routine veterinary needs as well as helping you through those stressful medical pet emergencies. Our canine friends enjoy their own waiting area and dedicated ward if they need to stay overnight, and our feline friends also have their own waiting area and dedicated ward including everything you would expect from an Accredited Gold Standard Cat Friendly Practice. Our exotic pets also have their own ward and waiting area complete with vivaria for our reptile species and specialised enclosures for birds. As an Accredited Gold Standard Rabbit Friendly Practice our small mammals also benefit from specially designed enclosures and an abundance of different tempting treats!

With autumn and winter on the horizon, now is the time to make sure your loved pet is ready for the months ahead. Our tortoise friends may need an annual “MOT” check to help keep them safe during hibernation. It‛s also a good chance to make sure our dogs and cats are up to date with routine flea and worming treatment and spot any signs of ill health or arthritis prior to the cold weather arriving. Our VIP Club helps to spread the cost of routine veterinary care and save you money and our veterinary nurses offer free of charge appointments to help determine the most effective and appropriate preventative parasite care depending on your pets lifestyle.

Dr Faye Bethell leads our team of four highly qualified vets and is a recognised RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Zoological Medicine, so able to treat any exotic pet that might come along. Faye also treats some very exotic species as she works closely with some of Norfolk‛s most popular zoos and zoological centres. The vets are fully supported by a great team of qualified nursing staff able to offer advice for routine pet care and wellbeing including pet weight management, claw clipping and dental advice.

Fully equipped with some of the most advanced equipment available, including digital x-ray , dental x-ray, ultrasound scanner, video endoscopy and laser therapy, we also have our own on-site CT Scanner (something very few Norfolk vets are able to offer), and in-house lab able to provide rapid results helping us treat your pets more effectively and reducing the stressful wait for results. Toll Barn Vets is an independent family run veterinary centre offering 24/7 care for all our clients avoiding the need for stressful visits to unfamiliar practices who don‛t have your pets records available in emergency situations.

It's not all emergencies – we have a luxury Cat Boarding Hotel on site so if you are going away and you cat needs looking after by a dedicated team of veterinary professionals, the Cat Boarding Hotel could be the answer. The past months have left us all concerned about Covid risks and with client and staff safety the highest priority, Toll Barn Vets limits the number of clients able to be in the reception at any one time and provide large separate individual screened cubicles solely for your use during your visit. We also continue to offer the facility for clients to remain in their car while our staff collect your pet and our vets have a discussion with you in our private car park whilst maintaining social distancing.

Want to know more – just call us on 01692 407126 and have a chat with Nola Bethell the Practice Manager, or just make an appointment to come along with your pet.

Premiere for modern day farce penned by actor who is also an ICU nurse

A modern-day farce has been written for a Norfolk theatre by an actor who doubles as an intensive care nurse.

Ryan Starling, whose family live in North Walsham, will premiere his comedy The Morning After (The Night Before) play at Sheringham Little Theatre in August. The 29-year-old is a regular performer at the venue, starting in its youth group and more recently taking roles, ranging from a “nerd” to a granddad, in its summer drama season.

He has been combining his love of acting, with training and working as a nurse, and after qualifying has been doing 12-hour intensive care unit shifts at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. And after gruelling work sessions, lockdown gave him the time to fulfil the dream of writing a play of his own, in which he will take the lead role. “I have been in a lot of farces, which are mainly set in a certain era when things were not quite politically correct, and had the idea to write one from the modern day a few years ago while on tour,” explained Ryan. He plays Gary who wants to get engaged to girlfriend Megan, and seeks to win over his future, but hostile, mother-in-law. However his best-laid plans turn to disaster when his best friend Temmy gets involved. “Gary is an unfortunate and is trying not to be a party animal but ends up having the biggest night of his life – with a pole dancer and police involved. There will be all the traditional elements of a farce such as door slamming and mistaken identity, but more relevant to current times.

Farce’s appeal is broad – with a mix of visual and verbal comedy – and it

Eighth Hempstead-by-Holt Arts Exhibition and Sale attracts work from local artists

After missing a year due the pandemic, the eighth annual Hempstead Arts Exhibition and Sale is back this September and is on track to attract over 120 exhibits from more than 25 talented local artists.

Ian Summers continued: “The quality of the work on display highlights the amazing talent of so many local Norfolk artists and beautifully reflects why the county provides such an inspiring backdrop for artists of all kinds. It will be a great show for everyone to enjoy. All the works will be for sale for a maximum selling price of £250 with many at very modest prices. We hope that many people will be looking to buy and take home some real treasures.”

The six-strong cast also features Little Theatre favourites Loraine Metcalfe as her mother and Ollie Westlake as Temmy.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “Our audiences love a good farce, but there are not many modern day ones about. Having one written by one of our favourite actors is a real delight and will give us a boost in our summer season during a difficult year for the theatre. We cannot wait to see how Gary’s night turns out.”

The show runs from August 18-21 at 7.30pm with 2.30pm matinees on August 19 and 20. Tickets £16 and £8 students are available from www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

The exhibition and sale takes place at Hempstead-by-Holt Village Hall, The Street, Hempstead, NR25 6TL between 10 am and 5 pm on 4th and 5th September.

Admission is free. Refreshments will be available throughout the day. More details are at www.hempsteadarts.co.uk. Left: Picture by David Woodfield

The exhibition, which takes place over the weekend of 4th and 5th September, will again be held in Hempstead-by-Holt Village Hall in north Norfolk and the proceeds will aid the funds of All Saints’ Church, Hempstead. Organiser, Ian Summers, said: “It is wonderful to be able to stage this popular local event once again and we are absolutely delighted that so many local artists have again approached us to exhibit. “We are expecting an exciting variety of different styles and media, ranging from fine paintings to photography, ceramics and sculpture by a number of exceptionally talented Norfolk artists.” Since the launch of the exhibition and sale, the event has raised over £15,000 for church funds.

is hard to write, to blend heightened reality without it becoming nonsense and keeping something back so the audience doesn’t guess what is going to happen,” he added.

u3a - Spreading the Word in North Norfolk

NNu3a members will be on hand at Sheringham Market on the 4th September to chat about their own unique experiences. They’ll discuss how these could involve you when you’ve retired and have time to breath and do those things you never had time for. They say the best way to stay young is to stay active, whether physical or mental. At NNu3a it doesn’t matter whether you’re interested in country rambles, learning a language, want to know more about music/dance or discover the hidden secrets North Norfolk.

North Norfolk u3a (NNu3a) will be busy spreading the word, that is promoting the University of the Third Age to active, retired folk in North Norfolk. For NNu3a members this means ‘feet on the ground’ where they can talk to the great British public, especially those retired or about to retire and living in North Norfolk. One of the best ways to do that is to take a stand – and what better way than to take a stand at Sheringham’s popular town market on Saturday 4th September.

Whatever...

'NNu3a currently have over 50 different groups covering a wide range of topics. It’s learning in a friendly informal way and a great way to make new friends. It’s definitely not like being at school! Come and discover more at Sheringham Market on Saturday 4th September 2021

Motor Neurone Disease: A rewarding way to make a difference locally

Do you enjoy listening to and helping people? Are you looking for a volunteering role which fits in around your family, work, studies and other commitments? By giving just a few hours a week you could make a huge impact.

Contact: www.northnorfolku3a.org.uk Paul Milner m: 07834-600665 e: publicity@northnorfolku3a.org.uk

As an Association Visitor for the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association you would maintain contact with people with MND, their families and carers by phone, email, via online platforms, or with face to face visits, when permitted. The role is a challenging but rewarding one. By offering confidential emotional support, information and help to access the right services, you can enable people affected by MND to live their lives more easily. Katie Moore, Association Visitor with the local West Norfolk Group says, 'Being an Association Visitor is a really rewarding role. It is a privilege to be able to support people in difficult times, and to know that you can make a difference in someone’s life. It's not always about the big things, sometimes just being there is enough.'

Nina Hicks whose late Mother, Pamela Tresize had MND commented on the support they received from their Association Visitor Steve and the support they received from the Kings Lynn and West Norfolk group: “Because MND is so complex and individual it takes an amazing person to volunteer and I am forever grateful to Steve Thorn and the compassion he showed my Mum. MND Kings Lynn are exceptional. They provide endless support emotionally and through the provision of information for both the patient and their families at diagnosis, during the illness and afterwards. They are irreplaceable and I thank them every day for everything they did for my mum and continue to do for me. They made a horrific situation a little easier and I will continue to raise money for them.’

Could you give your time to support people people with MND?

New cancer service opens at Cromer

A new service has begun at Cromer and District Hospital to provide further support and care to cancer patients closer to their homes. A satellite service of the NNUH Acute Oncology and Haematology Service (AOS) has started in Cromer to help patients who are having symptoms or side effects as a result of their cancer or ongoing treatment. The nurse-led service is currently running three days a week in the Mobile Cancer Care Unit (MCCU) but will run Monday to Friday when the new North Norfolk Macmillan Centre opens. The service, which is run by advanced nurse practitioners and nurse specialists, can carry out assessments, symptom management and procedures to treat recognised complications from cancer or cancer treatments. They also carry out blood tests, central line flushes, dressings and care of catheters, drains and stomas. The nursing team said: “We are really pleased to be offering this satellite service to patients closer to their homes in North Norfolk to help them with their symptoms.” “There is a 24/7 number for patients to call, but we know that for some patients, the Norwich AOS is too far to travel and that some patients may opt to stay at home and suffer with their symptoms. We hope we reach out to more cancer patients in the Cromer area with this service.” The Cromer AOHS is running 9am to 5pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The MCCU was launched earlier this year in partnership with cancer charity Hope for Tomorrow. The North Norfolk Macmillan Centre is being built in partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the N&N Hospitals Charity. The centre will include six chemotherapy treatment chairs with capacity to treat up to 36 patients a day, three new clinic rooms and two new minor procedure rooms, and a Macmillan cancer information and support centre.

The Gallant Gardner

We are now able to tell you that our two remaining evening meetings this year will be going ahead, our venue is St Joseph’s Church Hall, Cromer Road, Sheringham and will commence at 7pm for 7.30pm start. The first is on Thursday 16th September with an illustrated talk on the Cromer Shoals Chalk Beds, a marine conservation zone.

Sheringham Horticultural Society

Sheringham Horticultural Society has been in existence for nearly one hundred years. We have a large membership and our own allotments at Beeston Regis. Needless to say we have been on a sojourn for the last eighteen months.

Our final meeting of this year is on Thursday 14th of October 2021 the A-Z of bulbs by Johnny Walkers who recently retired from Taylors Bulbs. These meetings are open to members and nonmembers, if you wish to know more about SHS and membership please contact the secretary on sheringhamhorticulturalsociety@yahoo.com

In July as a membership, we were very pleased to have followed up a talk in 2019, with an excellent visit to Graham and Sally Watts two-acre garden at Dale Farm, Dereham. Graham and Sally who are both retired professional horticulturalists, open their garden for the National Garden Scheme and various other visits.

Chris Wright

Set on the edge of the old A47 road and in an urban area, this two-acre garden, with a spring fed pond, that runs through the middle of the grounds, is well worth a visit. Upon retiring from their respective jobs, Graham and Sally searched a wide area of the country looking for a suitable project, before settling on Dale Farm.

Stuart’s

TAXI & TRAVEL HOLT

With their knowledge and expertise, this garden has been transformed into a utopia of wonderment and amazement. With over 1000 different plant varieties, all tied together with a magnificent lawn and grass paths. You can spend a considerable amount of time walking around the gardens exploring all the hidden areas. As you do this, you will also discover an incredible amount of sculpture and artistic creations that adds to the structure of the garden.

Finally, when you get bored with that, there is the pond and an abundance of wildlife to find. The water is stocked with rudd and grass carp to keep the weed down, and the water attracts kingfishers, water voles and, dare I say, otters that have taken their toll on the ducks and moor hens this year.

Members and friends of the Society enjoyed an incredible afternoon together, the first in over 18months, getting back with old friends and enjoying not only the gardens, plants and wildlife but also the hospitality, and home cooked cakes produced by Sally. RNLI Wells lifeboat assists family members reported as being swept out to sea

Wells D Class lifeboat was paged by HM Coastguard at 12.06pm on Monday 26 July to go to the assistance of three people reported as being swept out to sea in the approaches to Burnham Overy Harbour as the tide was going out.

The Wells inshore lifeboat, with volunteer crew of three, launched outside the boathouse at 12.15pm on the ebbing tide and headed down the harbour channel towards Burnham Overy. In the meantime, a sailing boat in the vicinity had managed to pick up two people out of the water. The lifeboat arrived on scene at Burnham Overy Harbour entrance at 12.26pm and went alongside the sailing boat to pick up the two rescued swimmers, a father and son. Having established they needed no medical attention and they were safe and well, the inshore lifeboat headed to the shore at Gun Hill where other family members were located, arriving at 12.30pm. Further concerns were for the whereabouts of another member of the family who had also entered the water to aid the two swimmers; however, it was soon learnt that he had already returned to the safety of the shore. The lifeboat crew remained with the family group until the local Coastguard team arrived on scene. When all was well, the inshore lifeboat left at 12.50pm and returned via the harbour channel to the lifeboat house on the last of the ebbing tide. It was ashore at 1.03pm; sanitised, rehoused, refuelled and back on service at 1.40pm. RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, Chris Hardy, said 'This is the second incident of this nature within the last week. It isn't safe to swim in the channel on an ebbing tide; the current can be extremely strong and even the greatest of swimmers can find themselves in danger. 'If people see someone in difficulty we urge them not to enter the water to attempt to rescue them, instead they should shout for a lifeguard if there is one nearby, or call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.' Holt Footcare Mar 21_Layout 1 04/03/2021 15:57 Page 1 'This could have been a very serious situation, so I am pleased that there was a successful outcome on this occasion.

A recent call from a lady who had found a feral mum and her kittens is such a case. The mum needed to be neutered and the kittens caught so that they could be found new homes. Ideally the cat also needed to be relocated as the place she was living was not ideal. Most people are aware now that Cats Protection veterinary guidelines advise that feral cats should not be confined but neutered and released either back to their original site or another suitable alternative. Because we would not be able to take the mother cat in Stephanie contacted another local charity, Venture Farm, who have excellent facilities and a specially designated area for feral cats to live, and they agreed to take mum and kittens into their care once mum had been neutered and blood tested. The lady borrowed a trap from us and caught the mother cat almost immediately, taking her straight to the vets for the operation and treatment and then on to Venture Farm. The kittens went to ground for two days but a call from another concerned member of the public meant they too were caught and soon on their way to join their mother. A successful conclusion not only for us but also the concerned member of the public, the mum and kittens and the volunteers at Venture Farm. Cats react differently when taking up residence in cat pens. Some are quite happy to sit in their unit watching the world go by, but others do not appreciate being confined. We therefore try to ensure they receive any treatment needed so that they can be put up for adoption once their vet has given them a clean bill of health. Being in a new loving home and receiving lots of loving care is the best place for any cat. This is especially true with kittens and although some of ours do take up residence in our pens, many go into the home of one of our fosterers. Whether in the home or in one of our pens, they do receive lots of hands-on contact with their carers. It is, however, vitally important that they go to their new homes as soon as possible to enable them to adapt to having more space and getting used to different sounds. It is also a special time for their new family, one they will not experience again. A time to bond and enjoy this new mutual companionship. Therefore, as long as our kittens are healthy, they will have their first vaccination and be chipped at 9 weeks and leave for their new homes shortly afterwards. Their second vaccination and neutering (at the appropriate time) will be paid for by the branch at one of the veterinary practices we use. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of . our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen. Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home.

Stephanie receives many calls from people asking for help with stray or feral cats and this is one area where we can only give limited assistance. We will happily loan a trap for the cat to be taken to the vets to be neutered and in most instances also pay for this to be done. Unfortunately, we cannot help with the catching. However most people are only too willing to help if it resolves the problem.

Police officers have been slapped in the face, kicked in the stomach and stamped on by this Government…”

If the system was truly independent, then a pay review body should never be given an instruction from anyone that their remit does not include giving a recommendation on a pay uplift. We’ve seen that local government workers and firefighters have been awarded a 1.5% pay uplift and our brave NHS colleagues a 3% uplift. So, you can understand why my colleagues and I hold the unwavering view that this Government hold us in contempt. The current pay review system is unfit for purpose and must be urgently changed.”

Andy Symonds, Chair of Norfolk Police Federation, reacts to the police officer 2021 pay freeze announced by the Government – on the same day NHS colleagues were awarded 3% pay rise. Andy said: "I’m not surprised in the slightest that my outstanding, committed and brave colleagues have not only been slapped in the face but kicked in the stomach and stamped on by this Government. Warm words mean nothing from the Home Secretary and the Police Remuneration Review Body.

The Police Federation of England and Wales said: “The current pay system for policing is not fit for purpose. We are forced to enter into an inherently unfair process from the start, with the odds weighted firmly in favour of the Government where, it seems, a decision has already been made when they set the parameters for the pay review body.

It is now essential that we review this process and look to find an alternative. A solution that has the best interests of police officer pay at heart. We will be seeking the views of our members and calling an urgent meeting with our 43 Federation branches from across England and Wales to discuss our next steps.”

My colleagues have increasingly suffered both physically and mentally during this pandemic. They’re having to change shifts and short notice, work cancelled rest days, continually late off at the end of shifts just to make the system work. They give so much that goes unnoticed as they care about the vocation of being a police officer. Police officers believe in fairness and upholding the law along with integrity and a strong moral compass.

“However, there is clearly the opposite set of attributes at work with the current so called independent pay review system that is akin to playing against a body of people who hold all the cards.” Reporting today, the “independent” Police Remuneration Review Body stated “This year our remit did not include making an overall pay award recommendation” so it did not bother. It also rejected any notion of a “bonus” for officers for their hard work policing the Covid-19 pandemic. Andy added: “Officers have no industrial rights and accept this with the caveat that we expect to have a fair and robust pay mechanism in which the goal posts cannot be moved at the whim of the Government of the day.

Mannington Estate provides a wealth of activities for families this summer

Aylsham and District Flower Club

The Flower Club has been running since 1953 and meets in Aylsham Town Hall normally on the second Wednesday of each month 7pm for 7.30. However, on this special occasion (our first meeting for 18 months) we will be starting at 6pm in order to have a brief AGM before welcoming David Wright from Tunstead as our demonstrator. David has chosen the theme “Twenty Twenty,“ and it will be very interesting to see how he interprets this with flowers. All arrangements which will be raffled after the demonstration. The meeting usually finishes at 9.30 pm. It is not necessary to be a flower arranger to enjoy these relaxing evenings just somebody who loves flowers.

Mannington Estate is welcoming families to their Nature Discovery Days. The days run on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the summer holidays from 27 July to 2 September. The days include activities such as dens, natural crafts and mini beast hunts, it is £10 for adults and children from 6 years, accompanied children are £8, and £25 for 2 adults and up to 3 children.

During the year two Open Evenings are organised, one in the Spring and the second in November with a Christmas theme. We also have a workshop evening once in a while, and a competition for members each year neither of which are compulsory! Members provide arrangements for sale in Aylsham Market Place the day before Mothering Sunday.

Mannington has always been keen to welcome children, there is a playground, a bare foot sensory experience, nature garden, enchanted path and nature trails with fun things to find such as ladybirds and of course plenty of space to run wild.

The gardens are open on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays from 11am5pm through to September and accompanied children under 16 are free. The tearooms are open with ice creams as well as homemade cakes and a range of drinks. Mannington is also hosting Nomad this year, with its open fire cooking including kebabs, chicken, roast vegetables, pizzas and more, they are at Mannington on Sundays 12-4pm.

Opportunities occur to visit other clubs in the areas well as invitations to take part in Church Flower Festivals. Twice a year we are asked to provide two arrangements in Norwich Cathedral. Our Chairman, Crystal Dyball runs workshops for those wishing to develop their flower arranging skills.

For many years Aylsham Flower Club has enjoyed providing displays in the Floral Marquee at Aylsham Show. Hopefully this will be possible in 2022.

All in Garden Green

During the Summer the club planned two garden visits. We visited Dunbheagan, a beautiful garden near Dereham in June, and in July will be seeing the garden at Highview House, Roughton. New members and visitors are always very welcome. The committee would be pleased to have one or two more people to join our committee.

A celebration of the garden through music and words St. Andrews Church Thursford NR21 0BN Friday 3rd September at 7pm Tickets £10 on the door (children free) Prosecco and light refreshments included. Proceeds in aid of St. Andrews Church

Why not come along and try us out? There will be no charge at our opening meeting unless you wish to purchase a raffle ticket or two (50p each). Annual subscription and visitor fee to be decided at AGM. Contact: Crystal Dyball 01603 291190 email:- crystalflowers@myphome.coop

The Eye Man Fakenham Eyewear

Following the great success of “Sam Peel: A Man Who Did Different “ at Alderman Peel High School in 2018 the Wells Community Theatre Company was formed and is now rehearsing a production about the history of St Nicholas Parish Church & Wells Town from the 1100’s to the Great Fire of 1879.

This production, on a specially built stage, brings imaginatively to life, the history of Wells through words, music, humour & drama. (Spot the Dad’s Army bit!) The play starts outside with the Gathering of the pilgrims, dancing and singing. The year is 1069. Black Death (shades of Covid), Fishermen of Wells, the Bread riots and much more leading up to a climatic ending in the Great Fire. The company, some 40 + strong is largely local, has created special music & costumes and includes "Chanters Jigge’. a professional duo, well known to many Norfolk people.

North Norfolk Vikings

Noah Buchan

North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club got their first taste of competition for a long while at the "Midsomer Madness" competition held at the UEA promoted by the City of Norwich Swimming Club and under the auspices of Swim England's Covid Regulations which meant no spectators were allowed. A pity, as they would have seen Vikings enter 72 individual races, resulting in 61 best times and 16 top three finishes.

Noah Buchan of Beeston Regis won the 100m freestyle in 1:22.29. ahead of his Viking team mate, Michael Sayer from Holt who went 1:26.45. However, this was not enough for the two ten-year-olds respectively as they both made more trips onto the podium. Noah was runner up in the 50-metre freestyle with his 38.87 and a third place in 54.64 over 50metres breaststroke. Meanwhile, Michael was a runner up again this time in the 50metre backstroke scoring 43.05 Esme Seaman, 11, was very brave to attempt the 200 Individual Medley long course. Esme finished in a creditable 10 place but with an outstanding twenty-two second improvement ahead of her entered time, subsequently hitting the pad in 4:15.0. In the seniors, Harry Hudson 15, from Stalham, broke a minute in the 100m freestyle in 58.71 finishing fifth, and later went onto break 30 seconds in the 50m with 26.52 respectively. Harry finished fourth after facing fierce competition in both races. At the conclusion Lead Coach Sam Watts said “I'm really pleased with everything we did over the weekend. Let’s keep this up and keep working hard.” Anyone who would like to join Vikings should e-mail them learntoswim@norfolk.co.uk John Holden

Going Green in a Natural Environment

As part of the drive to find more sustainable solutions to support visitors to our beautiful coastline, North Norfolk District Council is pleased to be trialling this environmentally friendly facility as part of a series of green initiatives. This innovatively designed installation is enabling us to provide facilities in one of our more remote locations. A new public toilet is situated alongside the beach car park in Weybourne has been developed creating a low-cost option for human waste disposal. This free-standing toilet functions without water, electricity or chemicals and works by harnessing the natural energy from the sun and wind, making it a much more carbon efficient option than traditional toilets. These ingeniously designed toilets have been used in several remote, countryside and sensitive locations across the country and our teams visited a similar installation at Thornham Walks in Suffolk. This installation complements the Council’s portfolio of public toilets, in particular offering a solution for Weybourne which is not only situated in a stunning natural environment but has no readily accessible utilities. The toilets, which are attractively designed, feature a black ‘chimney’ (known as a pod) which is positioned to maximise the solar exposure throughout the year. The solar radiation heats up, raising the temperature inside which in turn speeds up evaporation, dehydration and natural aerobic decomposition. The prevailing wind continues to operate the system when there is no sun. Depending on use, the dried waste is removed approximately every six months. The toilets will be open 24/7 and a hand cleansing station is provided. Lighting will be provided by a solar powered light. North Norfolk District Council, through the use of this environmentally friendly design instead of traditional facilities will: • Reduce our carbon footprint • Cut down water usage • Use solar lighting instead of mains electric • Eradicate methane gas output by dispensing with a septic tank • Reduce the impact on the environment through not installing new drainage or power supplies • Increase protection of groundwater sources and our natural environment The toilet is now open.

Holt Bowls Club

For August we will be concentrating on finishing off our league games and concentrating on our own internal competitions - of a variety of types – and to enjoy a few fun events after our more serious bowling.

Last month I related our adventures visiting another bowls club. This July has seen the reverse – with the weekends filled with players from all over Norfolk; visiting to play competitions organized by County organisations who like to make use of our well maintained green.

Two weekends saw the Norfolk County Women’s Bowling Federation play the semi-finals and finals of their eight knock out competitions, open to individual members of the Federation. Then, a week later, we were busy hosting the final of the Cawston triples knock out cup, featuring teams from Swanton Abbot and Cawston . Finally, the last weekend of the month saw the two semi-finals of the “Durham Cup” – another Federation competition – filling both morning and afternoon on the green.

Hedgehog Haven

In the space of 2 days, I have had 2 calls concerning disturbed nests, luckily the mothers were with their young. The first case was a summer house in North Walsham being dismantled there were 6 new-borns (as such are called urchins), taking the dry leaves that were with them, they are now in an outside hut.

For all these events our role was to provide the equipment on the green and, above all, to keep the visiting players fed and watered. Those in the kitchen (mainly our ladies) deserved a medal. Above all, our task was to ensure the visitors went home happy – even if on the losing side!

The second case, I had a call from a couple at Stalham who were in the process of moving & on moving a plank near a wall discovered a circle of moss, they covered it over again until I could dash over with thick gloves, so as not to get my scent on it. There was a lovely nest with mum & 5 young approx. 2 weeks old, as their eyes were now coming open, picking up the whole nest they are now also safely enclosed in an outside hut.

Get Active with Blakeney Rowing Club

Members of your local rowing club have been much in evidence during the summer so far as they propel the two skiffs – Bluejacket and Hoi Larntan – over the Blakeney water towards the Point. Some rows have been against the clock, some have been entirely social, but all outings have been undertaken with fun in mind. It is great to report that most people who have come along for trial rows have decided to come back for more. See evidence of rowing expeditions by looking at some exciting photographs on crablakeney.wordpress.com Blakeney Rowing Club’s activities can also be followed on Facebook and on Instagram. Well worth a look!

No. 293 shows the Stocchi theme, defined thus: an immobile plug on a potential or actual flight-square would permit several mates, but these are separated without duals by each unit in turn that does play to that square. There are very few examples with 4 thematic variations, and this one with no white Ps is particularly pleasing. Difficulty 3.

Testator’s “Insane Delusions” render wills invalid

The High Court recently adjourned a "bitter" probate dispute between two siblings over their late mother's estate. Ms Bond and Mr Clitheroe have been embroiled in a dispute regarding the validity of their late mother's two wills. A will is invalid if the testator lacked mental capacity at the time of making it. If a will is determined to be invalid and there is no other valid will in place, the testator will die intestate and the estate will pass under the intestacy rules.

If the mother is adjudged to have died intestate, Ms Bond and Mr Clitheroe would each receive a one-half share of their late mother's estate, believed to be worth approximately £400,000. However, if the wills are valid, Mr Clitheroe would receive his mother's estate in its entirety. The Court at first instance held that the wills were not valid due to the deceased's lack of mental capacity. Deputy Master Linwood found that the deceased was suffering from, amongst other symptoms, "insane delusions" at the time of making both wills.

Mr Clitheroe appealed against this decision on the basis that the Master had failed to consider that it was possible to reason his mother out of her delusions and therefore, the delusions did not render his mother incapacitated at the time of making the wills, meaning they are valid.

Mrs Justice Falk, sitting in the High Court, upheld Deputy Master Linwood's decision, confirming that, for a delusion to be present, there must be a false belief which is "irrational and fixed in nature". Whether or not it is possible to reason an individual out of that false belief is not a relevant part of the test.

Mrs Justice Falk adjourned the matter for a period of three months to give the parties the opportunity to reconsider their positions and attempt to settle the matter without expending further substantial legal costs.

A finding of whether or not someone lacks mental capacity at the time of making a will is a highly fact sensitive issue and can depend on several factors, such as the individual's own mental state, the effect of any mental impairments and the doctor's mental capacity assessment (if one was undertaken). Ultimately, the issue will fall to be decided by a Judge, applying the test set out in the well-known case of Banks v Goodfellow.

If you are concerned that someone close to you has executed a will without having the requisite mental capacity, it is essential that you seek independent legal advice as soon as possible.
