A Note from the Editor
‘Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat…’ well you know the rest. I was thinking about that little ditty, and I think it sums up, quite nicely, what it is all about. Everyone looking forward to good food, company, exchanging gifts and making merry, but also a time of doing things for others. Going the extra mile to include others in our celebrations, helping out those who may not be looking forward to Christmas in the same way as the rest of us. It has been a tough two years causing hardship and isolation for some. So, if you are able, spread a little bit of Christmas to someone you know or support one of the many charities looking after those less fortunate this festive season, as the rhythm says: ‘Please put a penny in the old man’s hat’, large or small, a gift to make this Christmas a little merrier for someone, well, that is what it’s all about, isn’t it? It just remains for me to wish all our readers and advertisers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy your December magazine. Jo – Editor. Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines.

Arty New Year at The Venue – Book Now!
Publishing date Friday 14th January Friday 11th February Friday 11th March
What a pleasure it was to have the Wednesday evening Arts Forum back again at The Venue hosted by the indefatigable Phil Barrett. I’ve been on the sharp end of Phil’s questions (and will be again in February!) and he does an incredible amount of preparation prior to these events. It’s a real pleasure to be interviewed by Phil but he definitely keeps you on your toes which, of course, is what makes these talks so interesting to the audience. The November event was with artist and muralist Mary Blue and gave us a fascinating glimpse into how she approaches her work and her life and included a display of some of her original work. Phil’s guest at the December Arts Forum will be musician Chris Moorhouse of North Norfolk-based band The Lighters. Upcoming Wednesday events in the New Year include My Norfolk, My Holt (also hosted by Phil Barrett) with John Jarvis (January 19th) and the Arts Forum on February 23rd in which Phil and I will be discussing My Life in Film, an exhibition of memorabilia and drawings by Sir John Hurt which will be running at The Venue during the February Feel Good Film Festival. Looking a little further ahead, the subject of the Arts Forum on 13th April is internationally renowned storyteller, Hugh Lupton. Hugh appeared at this year’s Holt Festival, an event that was actually sold out twice! Definitely a date for those new diaries.
News from the Venue
We have been so delighted to host some amazing jazz acts at our new monthly Jazz Club on the first Wednesday of the month, which have been enjoyed by our audiences; huge thanks to our patron Anwen Hurt for helping us to establish this great new event. Post lockdown, it’s wonderful to be able to welcome live music back into the Venue and support the arts in this way. We are deliberately keeping ticket prices at an affordable level to enable all to come and enjoy these high-quality events. Equally successful and enjoyable was Live Wrestling Night, and we were so thrilled to see the return of this great entertaining event back to the Venue. We hope to see at least 2 more dates booked in for next year. As always, we seek to expand the many and varied activities that take place in the Venue, and new to the calendar at the end of January is a Tea Dance with a scrumptious cream tea provided by Holt Community Café, and with entertainment by Jeff and Sue Short. Come and enjoy wonderful live music and dance your cares away to cheer yourself up in January!
Planning is well underway for our February Feel Good Film Festival, and the line-up of cinematic treats is amazing for next year...more details to follow in January. Many thanks to Holt Town Council for awarding us funding to help with our Christmas Day Meal, which we are so excited to be doing in a few weeks' time. If anyone would like to join the team of volunteers for the most enjoyable event in our calendar, please do get in touch by phone or email, details below. We just love rounding off the year with a huge community feast, and this is our 7th year of doing so; it wouldn’t be Christmas without it! Following hot on the heels will be our New Year’s Eve Party with local DJ Luke Cole, and we’re serving prosecco at midnight as part of the ticket price of only £10; please book in advance as we have limited numbers. Our volunteers are the absolute backbone of all that we do at the Venue; without them nothing could happen, so I’d like to give a HUGE thank you to them for all that they do to keep the wheels turning, and to the Trustees and Committee for their continuing commitment and hard work. It is such a privilege to head up this project, and I have the joy of seeing the difference it makes to people's lives on a daily basis. Thank you also to all who continue to support us by donating financially. I hope you have a fabulous Christmas and New Year, and I look forward to seeing you in 2022 at The Venue. Carolyn Burn, Chairperson

County Councillor News
from County Councillor Erik Vardy Hello all, I will start my report with a couple of road safety matters I have been involved with. Firstly, many will have observed the recent Goods Vehicle weight restrictions governing access to Hempstead Road from the A148. The problem is that many drivers are blindly following their Sat Navs contrary to the very visible signs. The police have been enforcing this but to help out I have had two additional temporary signs put out to get the drivers notice.
Following on with the road safety theme, from my budget, Holt Town Council have taken delivery of a illuminated speed advisory sign for use in the Town. This advanced piece of kit records the speed of vehicles by time and date. With this data the Police can set up enforcement zones to keep our roads safer. County’s Community Covid efforts recognised with major funding boost for voluntary sector support
Community groups across Norfolk will have access to the support they need thanks to a new partnership, funded by Norfolk County Council. Voluntary Norfolk, Community Action Norfolk and Norfolk Community Foundation will work together as the Empowering Communities Partnership, with Norfolk Community Advice Network and FUSE Norwich alongside as strategic partners. The help on offer includes managing funding and finance; expert training and seminars; volunteer recruitment and deployment; and a series of forums and networking opportunities. This partnership marks a 45% increase in the funding provided for this support, in recognition of the role community groups have played throughout the pandemic Lucy Hogg, Director of Voluntary Sector Infrastructure at Voluntary Norfolk, said

“The partnership is really excited to be working together to drive a step-change in support for the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise sector – we want to -enable the sector to amplify its voice at this critical time, as we come out of the Pandemic to enable more collaboration, stronger partnerships, and more resources into the sector, to enable the sector to thrive, and provide its vital services to Norfolk’s communities.” The partnership has seen the funding provided by Norfolk County Council for Norfolk’s voluntary sector support organisations increase by 45%, from £172,000 to £250,000 for a 2-year period. There is also an additional cash boost of £150,000 over 3 years to directly support local voluntary groups through the Empowering Communities Fund. The funding builds on the existing infrastructure support arrangements and comes after a recent survey found that two-thirds of voluntary organisations expect the demand for their services to increase. This is against a backdrop of falling income and reduction in the range of services on offer. This news follows the announcement of the £1million in grants awarded to community groups across the county for the Norfolk Social Infrastructure Grant, funded by Norfolk County Council. The Empowering Communities Fund is now open to local organisations to apply for grants up to £10,000 to help build their resilience and become more sustainable. For more information and to apply go to https://www.norfolkfoundation.com/funding-support/grants/groups/ empowering-communities-fund/ A new partnership website will be coming soon, but until then any community group or social enterprise that wants to find out how to get help can contact www.voluntarynorfolk.org.uk/contact “HAVE A WONDERFUL HEALTHY AND SAFE CHRISTMAS”

Breaking up: dealing with matters amicably for the children
By Emma George, Family Services, Hayes + Storr Solicitors.
Breaking up can be very difficult, especially if children are involved. Often parents continue to live together until they separate, which can create a toxic family environment. Parents will need to decide where their child(ren) are going to live after the break-up, where they will go to school and other day-to-day arrangements.
This article explores 5 ways to keep matters amicable and act in the best interests of the children.
1. Think before you talk
Don’t talk negatively about your ex-partner in front of your children, whether directly or indirectly. Parental responsibility is a parent's duty to secure the welfare of their child, which is to be exercised for the benefit of the child. If a parent is talking negatively about the other parent they are not acting in their child’s best interests.
2. Discuss contact arrangements
It is important to discuss contact arrangements. The usual arrangement is for children to have a 50/50 split between parents to allow for equal contact, however this is not always possible due to work commitments or if one parent has moved far away. Under these circumstances, parents will often agree to have alternate weekend contact.
If you do not live with your child, think about living locally so that travel arrangements are
easier. This way, the child can easily alternate between homes and, if appropriate, mid-week contact can take place. If moving away is unavoidable, consider indirect contact through telephone calls or other means.
3. Stick to a regular routine
A regular routine is important for children, so it comes as no surprise that when parents separate a child’s routine is likely to change. Create a new routine for your child(ren) as quickly as possible. If your child is finding the change difficult, try to communicate with your ex-partner to discuss how you can make things better for them.
4. Talk to your children
Make sure your child is handling the separation and changes well. If they are old enough, discuss their wants and needs. This can help shape future arrangements and determine whether current arrangements are working.
If your child is young, consider talking to your ex-partner about how the separation may affect them as they grow up, and think about possible short-term arrangements which could improve the situation until they get older.
5. If you’re struggling, seek advice
If you are struggling to deal with arrangements amicably, a solicitor can help negotiate on your behalf. Whilst it is important for parents to try and continue communicating, we know that this is not always possible, and it can be helpful to discuss any areas of disagreement with a professional.
If you are going through a breakup and would like to speak to a professional about children or other legal family matters call Hayes + Storr on 01263 712835.
This article is for general information only and does not constitute legal or professional advice. Please note that the law may have changed since this article was published.
It may be useful to agree on a ‘Parenting Agreement’ which can be regularly altered to reflect the child’s age. This can include, among other things, details about holiday arrangements, educational and welfare needs.

Dear friends, In John’s Gospel chapter 1 we read; “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” The world can often be a very dark place. At some point in our lives we may well experience the darkness of grief, sadness, sorrow, loneliness or pain. For many refugees, asylum seekers, economic migrants, displaced by conflict, persecution, poverty or a changing climate, the world undoubtedly will be a dark and cold place this Christmas. And for almost two years now the covid pandemic has cast a shadow over all our lives and for some it has been a very dark time indeed. Yet, light has shone into that darkness in many and varied ways. Those working in our National Health Service and in the care sector, those working in our emergency services, together with all those at who have put themselves at risk for the good of others have shone a bright light of care and compassion into our lives. Also, those who continued to work during the periods of lockdown to provide us with the basic necessities of life, are also shining examples of selfless service to others. And in communities the length and breadth of the country, including our own, good neighbours, volunteers, community groups, churches and other organizations continue to shine a light of generosity, kindness, and love into people’s lives. To everyone, who has been and continues to be a beacon of light, I want to say thank you. Of course, once again we are preparing to celebrate the coming of the light into the world that enlightens us all. The light that darkness can never put out, the light that gives life to all, the light that is God’s selfless, self-giving love revealed in Christ Jesus. Born of Mary and laid in the darkness of a stable, the child whose birth we celebrate each Christmas is the Word made flesh, the light of God’s love which, if we allow it too, has the power to transform the darkness in our lives and fill our hearts with love that we too can shine a light in the world. May God bless you and yours with the light and warmth of his love this Christmas and always. Every blessing, Fr. Howard

New clubs happening at The Treehouse.
Dear Jo, Hello, my name is Donna Sibley and I run two groups at The Treehouse in Holt. The first group is called Carers Connection, it runs every Monday 10-12pm, and is aimed at carers from the young to the elderly who need some advice or just a general chat with other carers in the same situation. The reason I have opened this group is that I am a carer myself. My son has autism and I know what it is like to have no-one to talk to, and that is what it is like for all carers in any situation. When my son was diagnosed with autism, we were basically just given the diagnosis, we had no help and we had no one to turn to. So that is why I wanted to open this group, to give carers support, understanding and of course for friendly chat. Once the group is established then I want the carers to tell me what organisations they would like to come and talk to them as this is their group. The second group is The Welcome Cafe every 10-12pm and this is a befriender group where people can come and make new friends, have a place to come if you are feeling lonely, isolated and just want some company. I will be there to support people who need help and advice. I really hope people will come and use these groups as I want to help everyone who needs someone to talk too. The Treehouse in Holt is such a lovely place to run these groups as they have a cafe and also a community fridge too. If you do need help with anything caring related, then contact Carers Matter on 0800 0831148 or www.carersvoice.org.
Reply to Editor
Dear Jo, I reply to ‘A Note from the Editor’, November issue. As the editor says, getting back to basics is not such a bad thing. We don’t need expensive watches, a jag in the drive, a large screen TV nor to win the lottery to be happy. Heaven’s child is not rich in worldly gadgets and pots of money, but rich in deeds and wisdom; and those who are honest, work hard and care more for others than themselves, reap the fruits of their actions. Those at the top should be servants and slaves of all, as we are told in the New Testament and then, the world would be a peaceful and joyful place to live. Maurice Gray.
Thank You
Dear Jo, I would like to offer sincere thanks on behalf of myself and daughters to our neighbours and friends on their kind condolences for the loss of my wife and their mum, Eve Ford. Kind regards David Ford
Holt Christmas Lights
Dear Jo, Could I through the pages of the Chronicle say a huge thank you to everyone who supported our fund-raising raffle stall at the Holt Christmas Lights switch on event. We had a fantastic evening and raised a total of just over £400 which will go towards the cost of purchasing a defibrillator for the Scout HQ. There has been much publicity recently around the numbers of young, as well as older, people being taken ill with heart problems. This was reinforced during a first aid course attended by many of the Group’s Scouters. This together with the unavoidable delays being caused by the current demands on the NHS Ambulance Service, it was thought by the Group Executive Committee, at their recent meeting, that they should try and raise funds to purchase a defibrillator for the HQ in case of any emergency need arising during meetings there. Our thanks go to ‘Matthews Builders’ for donating the first prize of a Child’s 18 Speed Pedal Cycle. To Kelling Heath for a 3 Night Off Peak Touring Break. Thanks also to P&S Butchers; Gun Hill Clothing, Pops Beauty, Posh Pets, Neptune, Mountain Warehouse, Starlings Toyshop, The Wandering Whelk, Norfolk Natural Living and Bakers & Larners for their kind donations and of course to all of the wonderful people who stopped for a chat and bought raffle tickets or who had a go in the ‘Lucky Dip’, we are so very grateful for everyone’s generosity at this time of rising costs. Thank You
Dear Jo, Can I thank the person/people who anonymously retrieved the galvanised grate and returned it to its correct position at Selbrigg pond, near Hempstead, on Friday 26th November. The process could not have been easy as it had been thrown some distance into the pond so must have involved a grappling hook or similar. The grates are now securely locked in position. This followed them being unbolted and one – weighing approx. 30kg, being thrown – as described above – into the pond late Sunday/ early Monday 21st/22nd November, and a board removed from the sluice releasing approximately 36 million litres of water into the Glaven. If anyone has any information regarding this, please contact Norfolk Police on 101 ref 36/88099/21. Francis Feilden
The audience were very pleased with the Covid safety measures employed throughout the venue, and the takings from the Raffle and Refreshments benefited the hall’s fundraising to the tune of £163, while an additional £66 was raised for our ongoing Charity, the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital. As we speak, shows are being booked for 2022, and if you would like details, 'phone Carol on 01263 860844, leave her your contact details, and as soon as the programme is completed, you will be the first to know! Cranachan.
The magazines and TV programs are full of Christmas recipes at the moment, so I thought I would come up with a traditional Scottish dessert for New Year. If you are entertaining and want something you can prepare quickly and ahead of time, as well as being a crowd pleaser, this is it!
Ingredients
600mls double cream 75g pinhead oatmeal, toasted 6 tablespoons whisky 3 tablespoons honey (Scottish if you can get it) 500g fresh raspberries
Method Spread the oatmeal on a metal baking tray and put under a hot grill to toast for 3 -5 minutes, taking care not to let it burn, then leave to cool. Keep aside a little oatmeal and a few raspberries for decoration.
Whip the double cream to soft peaks, gently fold in the whisky and honey followed by the oatmeal. Finally combine the mixture with the raspberries.
Spoon the mixture into 4 glasses and chill for at least 1 hour, but overnight is ideal. When ready to serve, top with a little toasted oatmeal and a few raspberries saved from earlier.
Turkey Free Christmas!
Not everyone is keen on turkey for their Christmas lunch, so it’s good to have an alternative to hand that won’t have you slaving over a hot stove for hours. This is an adaptation of my lentil loaf that’s a firm favourite in our house, made festive by the addition of juicy cranberries and chestnuts, both easily obtainable at this time of year. If you happen to have a vegan or vegetarian coming to your Christmas lunch, you can happily give them this, and it’s so tasty that you may find the meat eaters asking for a portion too! Any leftovers can be portioned up and kept in the freezer for a couple of months to provide quick and easy suppers. Make it ahead of time and keep warm, or even the day before and reheat on the day, either in the microwave or portion wrapped in foil and placed in the bottom of the oven for half an hour. Merry Christmas one and all and see you in the New Year for some more delicious recipes!
Festive Lentil Loaf
150g red lentils, well rinsed 1 large red onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 10 Chestnuts, chopped (use a vacuum-packed packet) 6 sun dried tomatoes, chopped (use oil from the jar for frying) 1 large carrot, peeled and chopped into small chunks Handful dried cranberries Rounded tsp dried sage Flat tsp dried thyme 900ml Veg stock 100g oatmeal (porridge oats are fine) Rounded tsp miso paste, mixed with a little hot water Tbsp poppy or sesame seeds (optional)

Method
Jo – editor.
Gently fry off the onion and carrot in a little oil from the sun-dried tomato jar or use a little olive oil until softened, then add in tomatoes, herbs, chestnuts and garlic and gently fry for another few minutes. Add lentils and stir to coat with oil, then pop in cranberries and veg stock and gently simmer for around 20 mins until lentils are breaking up and most of the water is absorbed. Stir in miso paste, and then take off the heat and add oats to combine fully. Generously grease a 2lb loaf tin with olive oil and add in the lentil loaf mix, pressing down gently with a spoon. Top with a tablespoon of poppy or sesame seeds if you have them. Bake in a preheated oven on 180° for approx. 30 – 40 mins, until piping hot throughout and golden on top. After 10mins, run a knife around the edges and swiftly upturn onto a chopping board. Cover with foil and a clean tea towel until ready to serve with your Christmas Lunch! Carolyn Burn

Budgens of Holt
The C T Baker Group has confirmed work is to commence on the Kerridge Way site to rebuild Budgens of Holt after the supermarket was destroyed by a devasting fire in June 2020. Contractors will be onsite Monday 22nd November, with an anticipated completion date of Winter 2022. Sandra Taylor-Meeds, who has managed the Budgens of Holt store for more than 30 years, will be working alongside Carl Milton, newly appointed Managing Director of the C T Baker Group on seeing the store rebuilt. The planning application approved by North Norfolk District Council states: “The new design does seek to improve on the previous building by reconsidering the elements of the original building and refreshing them to provide a new store serving Holt for the future.”
Havercroft Construction Limited has been appointed as the Principal Contractor for the works, a company registered to the Considerate Constructors Scheme. The core values of this scheme are to ensure the external appearance of the construction site remains well maintained and to cause as little obstruction as possible to nearby residents, passers-by, and regular users of the Kerridge Way. Another key factor to this scheme is the CCS’ support to the local economy. Where possible, jobs will be sourced within the local area and a large proportion of the materials required will also be supplied from nearby traders. Whilst construction takes place, the 5,000sq ft temporary Budgens store will remain trading and the Group’s Post Office services will continue to operate from Bakers & Larners of Holt. Home Delivery customers in and around Holt will continue to be served from C T Baker Budgens of Aylsham. !

Rotary in North Norfolk & the National Trust in Partnership Prior to the arrival of COVID Holt Rotary had supported the Na-onal Trust Ac-vity Centre at Brancaster on the beau-ful North Norfolk coast. It provided residen-al stays for school children, many of whom came from deprived innercity areas. However, as a result of COVID, Na-onal Trust were forced to close the Centre in 2020. The final day included a beach walk and a visit to Hunstanton Sea Life Centre to see Humboldt penguins, Inca terns, turtles, and an outside seal enclosure to get a spectacular view from underwater. Thanks to Rotary and local businesses the party were fed, watered and provided with significant -cket discounts to make their stay special.
For some -me, Holt Rotary have worked closely with Holt Youth Project (HYP), a charity recognised by The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. HYP’s work now covers most of North Norfolk and includes support for some 65 young carers from 8 to 18 years old. COVID re stric-ons has affected the general wellbeing of many young carers who have had to care for parents or siblings as well as coping with selfschooling. These amazing young people desperately needed some form of respite care, even for two or three days, so they could enjoy a change of scenery and get some much needed fresh air and companionship to recharge their ba.eries.
Holt Rotary held mee-ngs with the Na-onal Trust to explore forming a partnership to try and restore the ac-vity centre to its original purpose and help disadvantaged youngsters. We were quickly supported by Hunstanton and North Norfolk Rotary who shared our aims and ambi-ons. They added much needed extra financial assistance and considerable exper-se. A substan-al discount on the le/ng charges ul-mately made the project financially viable.

From Holt Consulting Rooms How to Survive the Party Season.
The festive party season comes upon us at the same time the cold and flu viruses are doing their rounds. Here are my 3 tips to help see you through the advent and beyond into the New Year.
1. Up your intake of antioxidants from fruit, vegetables and nuts. Aim to have 6-7 portions of vegetables per day and 2 portions of fruit. Eating cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale and Brussels sprouts will provide vitamins A, C and E, important immune supporting nutrients. Peppers are also a good source of Vitamin C. A helping of mushrooms will increase your Vitamin D intake whilst adding blueberries and a few almonds to your breakfast will provide you with flavonoids, vitamins C, A and E plus Zinc, all essential for a healthy immune system. 2. Support your gut bacteria. Not only are the trillions of bacteria in your gut important for digestion, they also play an important role in immunity. If you support this fine balance of bacteria, they will help support you. Eat a variety of foods, especially fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Have some bio-live yoghurt, kefir, kimchi or fermented vegetables each day. Cut down on your sugar intake. Take a multi strain probiotic supplement during and after antibiotics.
3. Never arrive to parties on an empty stomach. When you have an event in the evening, make it a priority to have a balanced, healthy breakfast. Eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes and avocado with some wholemeal toast or bio-live yoghurt, oats, seeds, nuts and some seasonal fruit or berries are ideal. Have a wholesome lunch including some veggies and drink plenty of water throughout the day. This will prevent you gorging on party foods and decreasing the absorption rate of alcohol.

Stuart Rose_Layout 1 01/12/2021 12:05 Page 1
Physiotherapists spend a large amount of time dealing with the management of injured tissues, tendons, ligaments, fascia, joint and muscle. Each person who presents with a musculo-skeletal injury is unique, as is their injury. For example, two people suffering with a sprained ankle will present and be managed differently, their injury will also respond in a unique way to any given treatment. Mechanism, previous injuries, age of patient will all have influence on the overload of the tissue which manifests as the injury they present with to clinic. This requires the development of a bespoke treatment regime for each consultation, as the formation of ‘recipes’ for management of common injuries is flawed. Physiotherapists offer a unique skill in their ability to assess, diagnose and treat conditions. I take a holistic approach in the management of the injury itself and the person presenting with it. Physiotherapy can positively influence healing from the regeneration (DAY 5- 21) to the remodelling (DAY 21- 360) phases of healing. Experience, knowledge base and access to the current evidence base dictates the treatment plan which has the ability to alter depending on how the person and the tissues respond. If you feel could benefit from a Physiotherapy assessment, treatment and rehabilitation plan then please call contact me on 07919 621006 or email cdye.physio@gmail.com to book an appointment. I look forward to hearing from you. Claire Dye, Chartered Physiotherapist, BSc (Hons) HPC MCSP AACP

Merry Christmas from Toll Barn Vets
Christmas is fun for all the family and that definitely includes all our pets! However, Christmas is often a busy time for our 24/7 on-site emergency service as there are plenty of hidden dangers lurking during the festivities which we should all be aware of to help keep our pets safe.
Christmas Cake, Christmas Pudding, Mince Pies and Fruit Bowls all contain raisins, sultanas or grapes. These should never be fed to pets as they can cause kidney damage and in severe cases kidney failure. They can also contain alcohol which can cause signs of intoxication as well as dangerous drops in blood sugar levels, blood pressure and body temperature. Not all dogs will be affected but there is no way of knowing which animals will suffer from toxicity so they are best completely avoided. Macadamia nuts can also be toxic causing neurological signs such as weakness, depression, tremors and vomiting within 12 hours of being eaten. Onions and garlic can also be harmful (even when cooked) with signs such as vomiting and diarrhoea and potentially destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia). Many Christmas dinners include sage and onion stuffing or onion based gravy so it is best to avoid giving these “left overs” to pets.
Chocolate decorations are frequently used on trees and in stockings. Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine (similar to caffeine) which is toxic to dogs. The amount of theobromine varies with the type of chocolate (dark chocolate contains the highest levels). Depending on the amount and type of
chocolate eaten signs range from vomiting and diarrhoea to wobbliness, seizures and changes in heart rhythm (arrhythmias). If your pet eats chocolate it is important to be able to tell your vet how much and what type of chocolate has been eaten as this will help us calculate whether a toxic dose has been reached. Some foods such as sugar free gum and diabetic biscuits contain xylitol. Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar which is often used as a sweetener in low carbohydrate and diabetic products. When pets eat xylitol their blood sugar level can drop rapidly causing lethargy and weakness and in severe cases, seizures. Xylitol can also cause liver failure in some dogs. The signs of this can take several days to develop. We would advise urgent veterinary attention for any pet who is suspected to have eaten products containing xylitol.
Pets, especially dogs, have an exceptional sense of smell. This means they will often hunt out bones, foil or string with meat juices from the rubbish bin or counter tops. These bones are often brittle and splinter easily which can cause blockages or tears within the oesophagus and intestine whilst foil or string can cause obstructions within the stomach and intestine.
Many of these (and other) foods also contain high levels of fat. This can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and more seriously increases the risk of pancreatitis.
There are also several household dangers which are more common at Christmas. Tinsel and tree ornaments are particularly attractive play things to cats and puppies. If eaten these will often cause blockages and twists within the intestines of your pet requiring immediate surgery to remove the material. Christmas ornaments will also often break if played with by pets. This can cause choking, cuts within the mouth and damage to the intestines if eaten. Christmas trees themselves are also
potentially toxic with pine needles causing irritation of the mouth (which may show as excessive drooling), vomiting, diarrhoea and weakness. Naughty puppies and kittens have also been known to injure themselves climbing Christmas trees or knocking them over so it is always advisable to have a barrier to prevent access to the tree, as well as supervision!
Candles and fairy lights are always appealing to curious pets but can result in electrocution or burns. Make sure electric lights and candles are always placed out of reach of naughty paws!
Heated oils create pleasant aromas around the house but can cause burns to the tongue and mouth if licked so make sure they are placed away from inquisitive animals.
Festive bouquets often include Lilies but ingestion of the plant or plant pollen can cause kidney failure in cats. If your cat comes into contact with Lilies and the pollen sticks to their fur immediately place a buster collar or t-shirt on the cat to prevent them licking and ingesting more pollen and contact your vet for advice. Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias are also toxic causing vomiting, diarrhoea and depression. Mistletoe has been known to cause collapse, changes in heart rate and erratic behaviour following ingestion. Poinsettia sap has irritant properties which can cause blistering of the mouth and stomach when eaten. We would recommend all plants are kept well out of reach of inquisitive pets!
Most of these potential dangers are treatable if caught early enough so if you have any concerns about your pet during this festive period our 24/7 on site emergency service is available for our clients throughout Christmas and New Year on our normal surgery phone number (01692 407126).
We wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

North Norfolk Photographic Society Print competition
Members of North Norfolk Photographic Society gathered on Wednesday 3rd November and welcomed back Dave Jordan, a judge who had visited the club before.
The occasion was the club’s first Print competition and Dave Jordan found he had to keep a lot of the 61 entries back for a second look before reaching his decision. In the end, there were 2 awarded ‘Gold’, another 2 ‘Silver’ and 3 ‘Bronze’ - and 5 ‘Highly Commended’ and 6 ‘Commended’.
Mating Chalkhill Blues by Paul Richards
The winners, awarded ‘Gold’, were Paul Richards with ‘Mating Chalkhill Blues’ and Arctic Dawn by Nick Akers Diana Knight with ‘Lion Family Loving Life’. Both stunning wildlife photographs, albeit very different, the first butterflies on a macro, close-up scale and the lions in a natural African setting.
Those awarded ‘Silver’ were Paul Richards – already the receiver of one of the ‘Gold’ awards with ‘Mountain Hare’ and Nick Akers with ‘Arctic Dawn’.
Two ‘Bronze’ awards went to Lizzie Wallis, one for her photograph ‘Dunlin Reflections’, and the other for ‘Proud Puffin’ and the third ‘Bronze’ was gained by Liz Akers with ‘Glashedy Island’.

News from All Saints’ Church, Gresham
Christmas Time
Mistletoe with bright red bow, Holly in the hall. Yule log blazing in the grate, Shadows on the wall. Sherry for the grown ups, Something for the kids. Ticking clocks, hanging socks, And droopy, droopy lids. Time for bed, goodnights said, “However shall we sleep”? Snuggle down, eyes shut tight, Trying not to peep. Christmas morn’, not quite dawn, Everyone awake. Santa’s been, his plate is clean, Not one crumb of cake. Around the tree, shouts of glee, Gifts all scattered under. Bright new toys, big round eyes, Alight with joy and wonder. Time to eat, what a treat, With good food on the table. Turkey roast, “Who’ll eat the most”? And pudding if you’re able. Then off to the park, not quite dark, Singing as we go. Arm in arm, what Christmas charm, With moonlight on the snow.
Thank you to everyone who supported our Open Week last month- over 100 people came to look at our refurbished church and our feedback suggests it did not disappoint. Similarly, our first in a series of lectures was well attended and enjoyed.
Next month will also be busy with an Art exhibition in the church on Saturday and Sunday 11th and 12th December opening from 10.00am until 4.00pm. Some of the art work will be for sale and refreshments will be available. The following week we are holding an afternoon Christmas Social on Wednesday 15th December in the Village Hall. One further lecture is expected before Christmas- details to follow next month. Anyone wishing to hold an event in the church in 2022 can contact me on 01263 577794. Story of the North Norfolk Railway
A new DVD film has just been released giving the story of one of Norfolk’s main attractions. Titled ‘The Story of the North Norfolk Railway’, the DVD of over an hour long traces the long history of this important branch line from its building in the 19th century through to its closure by British Rail in the 1960s and purchase for preservation by the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway Society soon afterwards.
The DVD includes rare archive film portraying the last days of services at Sheringham and Look East TV news coverage of the rundown of services along the railway and at Melton Constable, once the main depot for the Victorian railway company. A derelict scene at Weybourne station in 1966 shows the massive task ahead of the new heritage railway volunteers as they prepare the railway for reopening in the early 1980s as far as Kelling Heath and then further along the route to the market town of Holt. Up-to-date scenes show the railway in operation today with in depth portraits on steam locomotives and heritage carries in operation along the 5-mile branch line.
Released in time for Christmas, the DVD is available from – www.railwayvideo.com

Holt WI
Da Vinci’s Flying Xmas. By David Abbott.
1502 AD. Xmas Eve. Leonardo was immersed in his studio dashing off a painting of a cross-eyed lady and doing some inventing.
The November meeting of Holt WI was held on 17th November at The Venue, Holt. After a delicious buffet lunch, provided by Owl Tearooms, a short business meeting was held. The WI Advisor, Carol Batchelor, then conducted the Annual Meeting. Eight members, including some of the new members who have joined since July, stood for Committee and were elected en bloc. Paula Hewitt was elected as President.
Suddenly he looked at his patented clockwork diary, realised the date and that he hadn’t got Papa Ser Piero a present. “I know, I will build him a flying machine,” he thought. “Papa will love that”
He dropped everything including the cat and searched the room, found some balsa wood, canvas and a few cogs that were lying around and set to work. Next morning, he hired an ox cart, loaded his machine and headed for the family estate.
After a tea break, Anwen Lady Hurt spoke about New Beginnings, a moving account of coming to terms with the loss of her husband, the actor Sir John Hurt. She was thanked by Gillian Pilgrim and Carol Batchelor by Jan Sherwood. The retiring President, Bridget Cuthbert, was presented with a Book Token and plant in recognition and thanks for all her hard work over the last 2 years. The raffle was drawn, and members were reminded that the 15th December meeting would be the 85th Anniversary of the founding of Holt WI. Cake would be on the menu and entertainment would be provided by Mark Jones, musician extraordinaire! New members are always welcome – just come along and join us. Further information can be obtained from Paula Hewitt on 01263 712043. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month, 2 -4pm at The Venue, Holt (Holt Community Centre).
It was snowing and the Tuscany landscape was a classic Yuletide picture. (Well it wasn’t. I made that up to add some seasonal colour).
Papa met him at the gate. “Happy Xmas Leonardo. But why are you going to the tip today? It won’t be open”.
Leonardo did his best to explain it was not rubbish but an invention which in 500 years’ time people would marvel at. “Always the dreamer,” said Papa. But being an attorney and notary, he gave his son the benefit of the doubt.
Together they trudged up a large nearby hill. Papa was persuaded to sit on a saddle at the front of the machine. Leonardo gave it a shove and it slid off the hillside into the gorge. It didn’t fly. But his father did.
“Hmmm,” thought Leonardo as he peered over the precipice. “I must add a parachute to my bucket list.”
Papa Ser Piero would always remember this Xmas as the one his son catapulted him down a hillside in the name of science. But at least Leonardo made amends, inventing him a stress fracture device. Papa was so pleased he hit his son on the head with his crutch.

The Holt Society
He talked of the Shire Hall, a building which was once the Centre of Justice, and the Old School House, converted from the family Manor House to Gresham’s School by Sir John Gresham in 1555 and rebuilt in the 1850s; and the splendid building, once the White Lion, and the Feathers Hotel, perhaps the most famous building, which dates back to the time of the fire and was once a great coaching inn. He also spoke of Spout Hills, once the scene of many celebrations, especially one in 1814, a lavish affair to celebrate, a little prematurely, the end of the Napoleonic wars, of the railway, and the cattle market and much more. At the end, thanks were given to Presenter Steve Benson, Narrator Keith Gosden, Producer/Cameraman Joe Harding and Editor Scott Lottes, all who worked hard to produce this film.
After six months of work on 18th November, the Holt Society members had a preview of its latest project, a film “A Stroll through Georgian Holt.”
There were two performances and around 80 members were able to watch this 30-minute film, some of which was taken at 5am in the morning to ensure the streets were clear of traffic. The feed back was very positive being described as ‘Fabulous’, ‘Wonderful’, ‘Outstanding’ with some saying that ‘it got me looking at the buildings in a way I had never done before’
“It was a fascinating insight into this lovely historic town”. Copies of the film will shortly be available from the Holt Society Website www.theholtsociety.org free of charge.
The film was introduced by Keith Gosden, who also narrated parts of the stroll, and Steve Benson.
Contact: Keith Gosden holtsocietymembership@outlook.com The Holt Society was founded in 1965 with the aim of preserving the Georgian centre of Holt. With over 250 members, from all over the UK, it engages with planning and development issues, holds guided walks and tours along with social gatherings.
As we wandered through the streets and alleys and yards, Steve Benson, retired Head of History at Gresham’s School, told us of the great fire in May 1708, which swept through the town, destroying most of the wattle and daub buildings with their thatched roofs; and the ensuing building of the Holt which we know today, making this a Georgian town.
As the camera took us around Holt, and stopped at some of the lovely old buildings, photos from the past were blended in, showing that apart from some modernisation, there was not much change, except for the names over the shops and the merchandise they were selling and of course, the dress of the people. Steve is a great raconteur, and his narrative, given in his mellow voice, was entertaining and absorbing.
He told us of the Paul Pry Inn, which was named after a rather nosey character in a play, who would pry into people’s homes, and afterwards would say “I hope I don’t intrude”!

December News from Duncan Baker MP
Work on wind farms continues, with some more good news. Equinor has extended its pre-application period for the Sheringham and Dudgeon Extension projects, allowing more time to discuss how onshore cabling can best be organised to limit the damaging effects of cable trenches on our landscape. The size of the landfall area at Weybourne and Bodham, and the cable corridors, has been drastically reduced.
It’s been another very busy month both in Westminster and at home in North Norfolk. Dog Theft
And I visited the fascinating Glaven Conservation Group, seeing first-hand the amazing work the group has done to improve biodiversity and habitat – including the Glaven Beaver Project, which is helping these incredible animals to shape the habitat around them.
Throughout the year, many of you have contacted me with concerns about dog thefts. This heartless crime deprives individuals and families of their much-loved family members and causes huge distress to animals. I responded by successfully arguing for a new Pet Theft Taskforce to be set up. As a result of this work, the government’s new Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill is currently going through Parliament. Alongside powers to tackle puppy smuggling and livestock worrying, the Bill includes a new dog abduction offence: those who steal our faithful friends will face jail sentences of up to five years. This is a great result and thank you to everyone who contacted me about this issue.
Around North Norfolk
It’s been great to visit some of the charities which benefited from my London Marathon run in October, raising over £38,000. It’s been inspiring to see the work being done by the Friends of Roughton School, Ladybird Pre-School Nursery, Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society, and Stalham Community Gym. I also enjoyed my visit to Alderman Peel School in Wells, meeting students who were runners up in the Amazon Longitude Explorer Prize for designing a personal pollution monitor called ‘Pura-Sky’. As ever, if you have any issue or concern, you’d like to talk to me about, please call me on 01692 557140 or email duncan@duncanbaker.org.uk. This has again been a challenging year for all of us, but a big thank you to all those who have worked so hard to keep us safe and well in 2021. A very happy Christmas to everyone in North Norfolk and thank you to all of you who serve on our parish councils for the hard work you undertake on behalf of our local communities.
Climate Change
In the month COP26 was held, there’s been great progress on climate change this month. Over 100 world leaders have now promised to end and reverse deforestation by 2030 – including Brazil, a vital signatory to the agreement. And – contrary to some reports in the media – Amendment 45B to the Environment Bill was agreed, placing a new direct legal duty upon water companies to reduce and eliminate the release of raw sewage through storm overflows. In an area with six blue flag beaches, it’s vital that our incredible coastline, rivers, and streams are protected. Water companies will be obliged to monitor and publish details about water quality, and significant fines will be imposed on companies which continue to pollute our watercourses.

Save Wiveton Church!
Please support our crowdfunding appeal for £25,000 to keep the lovely church of St Mary's Wiveton, near Holt, Norfolk open for everyone to enjoy.
Wiveton Church
On 10 November a film was released in which Desmond MacCarthy (of Wiveton Hall and `Normal for Norfolk') and Emma Bridgewater (of Emma Bridgewater Pottery) talk about why we need to save Wiveton Church. See https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/save-wiveton-church to watch the film and to donate.
The fallen roof beam
Two years ago, a large medieval roof timber collapsed on to the altar and the church had to be closed for several months for investigations. These showed that the whole of the chancel roof (the eastern part of the church) needs repairing urgently. Temporary repairs allowed us to reopen the church for now but, unless the roof is rebuilt by the end of 2022, it will have to be closed again. Norfolk has the largest group of medieval churches in the world, an important historical legacy for future generations. These beautiful buildings, of which St Mary’s, Wiveton is a lovely example, contain a wide range of art and craftsmanship.
St Mary's is in a beautiful position in the heart of the village on Wiveton Green and beside the bank of the River Glaven in North Norfolk. While it has always been and remains a place of worship and for quiet contemplation, it has become increasingly popular for community and West End_Layout 1 31/01/2020 19:55 Page 1 cultural events, many of which are planned for the coming months.
We simply cannot allow this building, with its medieval graffiti and its peel of six bells ringing out over the Glaven Valley and its fine architecture to close for the first time in more than 700 years. Many benefactors and grant-making trusts have pledged to support the restoration of this wonderful church and we have already raised a significant sum. We shall shortly be asking the Heritage Fund for a grant, but we need to raise at least £25,000 through West End crowdfunding to support this application.

Walking Rugby…Fakenham RFC
An enthusiastic band of players continue to play each Wednesday evening (6.45 til 8pm), with numbers swelling since lockdown ended. However, the welcome mat is always out to anyone wishing to try the game. Primarily for those over 50, it is not as pedestrian as it may sound and has been likened to ‘a slightly slower form of Touch Rugby’. There is little contact between players with the emphasis being on tactics rather than muscle, making it ideal exercise for those with no experience of any form of rugby, as well as former players who are looking to maintain fitness and some form of contact with their old sport. Having started the ‘Walking rugby’ section, Jeffrey is still one of the leading lights and can be contacted on 07766 597922, he will be very pleased to take your call and have a chat with you about the game, in the hope that you will come along and have a go.
Sing North Norfolk!
The social side is also flourishing, with a Christmas party already organised and the bar is open most evenings after play.
Want to improve your mental health whilst learning new skills? Want to make new friends? Want to sing music loved by generations alongside new works?
If you answered “Yes” to any of these, then why not come along to a taster session at Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society as they approach their 90th anniversary? New members are welcome at any time but especially at the free taster rehearsals on Mondays 10th and 17th January at 7:00 pm St Andrew’s Methodist Church, Cromer Road Sheringham NR26 8SA. The choir will be preparing for their Spring concert on Saturday 30th April in Cromer. They plan to perform John Rutter’s Mass of the Children alongside Broadland Youth Choir as well as Seasons, a specially commissioned work by Thomas Hewitt Jones. For more information about the choral society please visit www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.org.uk
You can be sure everyone is welcome, regardless of ability, experience, fitness level, etc and recent converts have produced several new female members so that the sexes are almost equally represented. Why don’t you give it a try?

What Would We do Without You?
If any AGM can have a “highlight” then these awards were it. Otherwise, the meeting followed a familiar course of yearly reports and election of officers. This year, Kay Hazelwood replaced Gillian Pilgrim as Chairman, Gillian having completed four years in the post. Newcomers to the Committee were Terry and Penny Martin – keen to try out their ideas on the rest of us! Penny is cutting her teeth by organizing the Christmas “Fayre” next week.
Almost all voluntary organisations depend critically on a few individuals who work harder than can be reasonably expected. And so it is with the Bowls Club. As a reward for such talents and application we have the opportunity to award honorary life membership to these champions. Two of our members were unanimously voted this honour at our AGM this week.
Hazel Rix, well known in Holt, is only one of two current players who were founder members of the club when it was formed way back in 1988. Even before then she was involved in Norfolk bowling and her lifetime knowledge of the sport in the County and at the Club is second to none. She organizes the dates for the multitudinous events we undertake regular “roll-ups”, “friendlies”, league matches, club competitions, County use - to mention only a few. Without her, our club diary would be in utter chaos. And she does it all without the aid of a computer!
In complete contrast is action man Barry Dennis. He is our greenkeeper and, he too, a worthy receiver of life membership. Constantly at the Green – mowing, raking, spiking, fertilising, hedge cutting, and whatever – no task seems beyond his talents and apparently inexhaustible energy. (He is also one of our best bowlers!). It is his efforts that maintain our green as one of the best in the County and encourage others to visit us for a game of bowls.

Row On the Broads With Blakeney Rowing Club.
Your local rowing club is as active as ever. There are several outings a week in the area around Barton Broad with happy rowers making the most of the water now that holiday cruisers are scarce. See the club website on crablakeney.wordpress.com for recent pictures of Broads adventures in the beautiful skiff Bluejacket. Hoi Larntan has now been taken from the Carnser for its winter check and make over; rowing in Blakeney will continue next summer.
Wednesday 8th December – 7.00pm: Based on the magical true story of how Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol “THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS” 2018 (PG) starring Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer and Jonathan Pryce. Review: For everyone who loves a great Christmas movie! Wednesday 22nd December – 7.00pm: The Christmas Film of the Decade - Featuring the music of George Michael and Wham “LAST CHRISTMAS” 2020 (12) starring Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding and Emma Thompson. Review: Wonderful, charming, funny and sad. George would approve. The Film Club will be serving Mulled Wine and Mince Pies prior to the screening, please come and join us around 6.30pm. Wednesday 5th January 2022 – 7.00pm: Amazingly acted poignant biopic of a sad and faded star “JUDY” 2020 (12) starring Renee Zellweger. Review: OSCAR winner who truly deserved her Best Actress award. Wednesday 19th January – 7.00pm: Gripping and deliciously deceptive “THE GOOD LIAR” 2020 (15) starring Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen. Review: A very sophisticated drama.
At the time of writing, The Carrow Cup, the race through Norwich, is the next competitive event on Saturday 4th December. Rowers hope for more success in what promises to be an exciting test of rowing skills involving many oar-powered craft.
As the festive season begins, why not get in touch with the club to try skiff rowing for yourselves? There is no obligation to compete. The picture accompanying this article shows the peace and quiet of rowing and socialising on The Broads. If you want to know more, contact club captain Humphrey at hborgnis@icloud.com to arrange a trial row. There will be three dates, over the course of the next year, which will be given over entirely to the induction of beginners and returning rowers. You can keep up with the club’s activities on Instagram and on Facebook.

The re-introduction of Speakers is being considered by the Committee for implementation in the New Year. Owing to a different dining area at The Feathers being allocated to the club, it was decided just to hold monthly meetings without speakers in the lead up to Christmas, to ascertain noise levels when having a speaker present. A guest who attended the club’s October meeting, has subsequently joined the club, and this month’s guest has decided to join as well. This brings the club membership to 40.
Holt and District Probus Club meets at The Feathers in Holt for lunch on the first Thursday each month. A 3-course meal is provided, and this is usually followed by a speaker on a subject of interest. In the past, topics have ranged from submarines through charity service abroad to Gilbert and Sullivan operas! Anyone interested in membership should contact the Hon. Treasurer Ray Morgan at ray_morgan@icloud.com or via the club website at holtprobusclub.wordpress.com

the leading guide of Employment Law: What you need to know 500; the best law firms and solicitors in the UK. about Settlement Agreements
Sadly, the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on businesses has led to an increase in people being made redundant. The Office for National Statistics recently reported redundancy rates have increased faster during the pandemic than during the 2008 to 2009 economic downturn, and with further uncertainty ahead, many employers are continuing to reduce their workforces. This has led to an increase in employees being offered settlement agreements. What is a settlement agreement?
A settlement agreement (previously known as a comprise agreement) is a legally binding, voluntary contract between an employer and employee. The contract provides that an employee agrees not to pursue any claims against the employer in a tribunal or court in exchange for the payment of a severance sum to the employee. A settlement agreement may be appropriate where the employment relationship is continuing, but it is most common for these agreements to be entered into where the employment has terminated (or is about to do so). Since many businesses have faced financial difficulties during the pandemic, it’s likely that the use of settlement agreements will be favoured by employers. This will give employers peace of mind as it will remove any risks of employment-related claims being brought by employees and will firmly draw a line under the employment relationship.
What should you do if your employer offers you a settlement agreement?
A settlement agreement will not be valid unless the employee has received independent legal advice on the terms and effect of the settlement agreement and in particular its effect on their ability to bring a tribunal claim under the relevant legislation.
As an employee will be waiving their right to pursue any claims, the adviser will consider whether the employee has any claims and will advise on the prospects of success of those claims, along with the potential compensation a successful claim would attract. Under most circumstances, the employer usually contributes towards the cost of receiving that advice.
Whilst the adviser is not required to consider whether the employee is getting a “good deal”, this is certainly something that can be discussed. If the employee wishes to negotiate for an increase in the compensation payment, this is something the adviser can undertake on their behalf. Meet Head of Department Nicola Strefford
