A Note from th e Editor

Can you believe that Christmas is almost here and yet another year has flown by? There are fairy lights and seasonal m to get us in the mood, and yet things feel very differen time. Who would have thought so many would be in n of warm spaces and food banks? We are all pulling our belts in and scaling back the celebrations this year in anticipation of that fuel bill which will inevitably land on the mat But that doesn’t mean Christmas can’t still be special Often it is the simple things which turn out to be the most memorable or pleasing and what price can be put on sharing time with family and friends? So, if Christmas is more frugal this year so be it, a good time can still be had by all Whilst you are at it, remember those who are struggling or lonely and do what you can to make Christmas a little happier for them too A very Merry Christmas to all our readers and advertisers

News from the Venue

It was certainly a busy and successful November this year, with the launch of the new Barclays service at the Venue going off with a bang! Over £1000 was raised on the day through commission on sales of beautiful art at the Barclays Community Art Exhibition in the Exhibition Space and the wonderful raffle that Jo and Lisa from Barclays spent a huge amount of time on. Very grateful thanks must go to them for all the hard work that they put in, to make this such a successful event, and also to all those generous businesses and individuals who donated beautiful gifts for our raffle Duncan Baker, who was instrumental in bringing Barclays to the Venue, did the honours of cutting the ribbon for us and declaring this new service open, and ushering in a new way of banking for the town As if all that wasn’t enough, the Premier League Trophies brought in a huge amount of people, and we were so thrilled to have them with us for the day, long enough to enable many children to come and see them and be photographed next to them after school. With Barclays match funding the monies raised on the day, this is a very timely financial boost for us, as we launch more social action projects

Our Cozy Café is picking up as more people hear that this new warm hub facility is now open 5 days a week, and we will soon be providing hot soup at lunchtime as the weather gets colder. It ’s free and open to all, so pop in on your way into town for a cuppa and some cake

Our first Family Fun Day at the end of October was a huge success, with over 130 children and their parents coming into the Venue to enjoy some free fun and games, with everything from a climbing wall to arts and crafts to traditional games A massive thank you to the 1st Holt Scouts who worked so hard on the day helping the children to enjoy themselves, and to their leaders who cooked wood fired pizzas on the patio to give out All the volunteers worked so hard to make it a day to remember, and it was so much fun that we have planned another for Christmas! The Kids Christmas Party will be on 10th December and feature a film, Christmas Tea, Bubble fun, a Magician, Santa and a great disco at the end It really is wonderful to see so many children enjoying the Venue, and it will now be a regular feature

Coming up this month we have 2 great screenings, The Railway Children Returns and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a special Christmas Bingo, Jeff Short ’s Christmas Tea Dance and of course, our annual Community Christmas Day Lunch which is booking up fast I look forward every year to the wonderful community spirit that we have at this very special event that brings people together to enjoy the festive feast There is always a special atmosphere with so many coming to serve and to enjoy time together, with every one of the same mind to enjoy a great relaxed time As we get busier and have more events in the calendar to help and serve our community, we are appealing for more volunteers to join our family of helpers Anyone can join for as much or as little time as you can manage, full training is given, and we endeavour to make things as fun and fulfilling as possible There are many roles and areas in which you can get involved from kitchen to bar to front of house, cinema screenings, fundraising, marketing and much more! Why not pop into the Venue during the week and have a chat with us over a cup of coffee in the Cozy Café, and join our amazing team in their rewarding work?

For more info on volunteering or to book for any of our events, call on 01263 713427 or email info@thevenueholt com

County Councillor Report for Holt Division

Regional Transport Blueprint

A regional transport blueprint that supports major schemes in Norfolk has received county council backing Norfolk County Council’s cabinet have approved the Transport East strategy, which will pave the way for Government funding for key roads and public transport links The strategy says that “with the right investment in the right places”, transport schemes could help the economy of the East of England rise from £73 billion to £119 billion by 2050 Schemes supported by the strategy’s delivery and investment plan include:

• Key roads, including the Norwich western link, the Long Stratton bypass and the West Winch Housing Access Road

• Boosting public transport, cycling and walking

• Supporting rail improvements, including strategic east west connections The strategy is aiming to achieve the following, by 2050:

• Better public transport connections, accessible to everyone

• Places that make it easy and attractive for people to move around sustainably

• More reliable business and freight journeys, due to less congestion and fewer incidents

• Increase accessibility for rural communities to education, training, services and jobs

• A healthier, more active population by making it easier to walk and cycle more often

• Cleaner, greener transport, helping to protect our local environment and the world for future generations

• Fewer journeys being made, partly due to better online connections bringing services into our homes

It says: “The Transport East region is of huge importance to the UK It is home to 3 5m people and 1 7m jobs With a vibrant economy worth £73 billion, it is already one of the fastest growing regions in the UK outside of London

“It is only one of three regions to be a net contributor to the UK Our forecasts indicate that with the right investment in the right places, by 2050 our region could be worth £119 billion.

Norfolk Libraries to join Warm Welcome campaign

Norfolk Libraries Service will be making all 47 of its libraries available as part of the Warm Welcome campaign The scheme supports free, warm, and welcoming spaces in communities across the UK. Warm Welcome is a national campaign which will work with community spaces, including churches and faith groups, businesses, and local authorities, to ensure that nobody is left to suffer on their own this winter Libraries across Norfolk remain open for all and provide a space for people to sit in comfort and access a variety of services on offer These include reading, doing a jigsaw, playing a board game, or joining in Just a Cuppa or activities Other free services available at Norfolk libraries include:

• Tea, coffee, instant soup, and hot chocolate are available during staffed hours

• Library staff and volunteers can provide visitors with trusted information about other support which is available

• A variety of bags are available for free, with no questions asked

Open Library gives people access to libraries for a total of 69 hours a week at most libraries, giving visitors access to the library, its books, computers, and spaces, even when the building is unstaffed New £1 65m Sheringham recycling centre set for bigger reuse area thanks to local feedback

Councillors have received feedback on the Sheringham recycling centres with larger and more accessible sites fit for the future Both projects are making good progress, with feedback from local people key to helping shape the design of both the sites

Two hundred and thirty three people took part in a month long consultation on the design and layout of the proposed Sheringham site, after initial plans were revealed in July this year

As the Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste, I said: “I’m pleased at the excellent progress so far on these two significant projects that will help support our aim to cut waste by increasing reuse and recycling in the county. “I’d like to thank everyone who gave us their views on our initial designs for the new recycling centre for the Sheringham area It was great to hear what local people wanted to see at their new site, and as a result of the feedback we’ve made the area set aside for reuse even larger, to allow better quality second hand items to find a new home!

The initial designs of both sites took into account feedback from earlier consultations around importance of reuse, plenty of parking and easy vehicle flow through the site

RNLI Wells Celebrate Opening of New Lifeboat Station with Flag Ceremony

The ceremony, which took place on 13 November, signified the transfer from the old lifeboat station to the new, and marked the opening of the RNLI shop and visitor centre.

Volunteer crew of past and present, and the wider lifeboat family, watched on as the RNLI flag was lowered at the old lifeboat station at 12:03 and raised at the new lifeboat station 13 46 minutes later The times had significance and related to the numbers on the station’s lifeboats; 12 03 is the number on Doris M Mann, the station’s existing Mersey class lifeboat, and 13 46 is the number on Duke of Edinburgh, the station’s new Shannon Class lifeboat which will become operational later this year Respected former members of the crew, aided by senior current members and the Earl of Leicester, lowered and raised the flag with pride, knowing that although it was the end of an era for the old lifeboat station, it was the beginning of a new and exciting time ahead for the new Built entirely by public funding, with a station appeal raising £250,000 in 2014 15 and monies raised through the Civil Service charity, The Lifeboat Fund, contributing the rest, the new lifeboat station was finally completed at the end of last month.

Chris Hardy, lifeboat operations manager, said ‘All of our Lifeboat crew were thrilled to finally transfer to our new

purpose built boathouse, which has been designed specifically to be ‘fit for purpose’ in accommodating and maintaining our new Shannon and D class inshore lifeboats The new boathouse also provides vastly improved crew changing facilities, a large and well equipped crew room, which will also double up as an excellent and much needed crew training facility Currently our Mersey class Lifeboat remains our Station boat and will continue to play that vitally important role of being ‘ever ready ’ to save life at sea off our coastline ’

The new Shannon lifeboat station will become fully operational during the winter once the volunteer crew have completed their training in operating the Shannon lifeboat and its SLARS launch and recovery system Early next year the station’s Mersey lifeboat, Doris M Mann of Ampthill, will be retired and we, and members of the public, will have an opportunity to say a fond farewell to her before she leaves Wells for the last time after serving us well for 32 years.

As well as housing the Wells' lifeboats, the station also provides a shop and visitor centre with a gallery from which the port side of the RNLB Duke of Edinburgh can be viewed The shop and visitor centre will be open most Saturdays and Sundays between 10am and 4pm over the winter with more days added as more volunteers are trained Guided tours of the lifeboat station can be booked, starting in January, through the RNLI Wells website: www wellslifeboat org /visit htm The tours will be for groups of up to twelve people and will last just under an hour giving people an opportunity to see the Duke of Edinburgh close up and discover more about the workings of the station

The Holt Society

It is impossible not to be aware of the huge crane towering over the centre of Norwich on the Castle Mound

The transformation of the iconic Norman Keep is one of the largest heritage projects currently underway in the UK, generously supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and a hugely significant cultural investment for this region ‘Norwich Castle: Royal Palace Reborn A Story 900 Years in the Making ’ was the title of the talk by Hannah Jackson the Joint Project Coordinator, given to the Holt Society on Oct 28th and the image of this crane seemed to encapsulate the complexity of the project. Nothing can be brought onto or removed from the castle mound other than by this crane such is the vulnerable structure of the whole environment This is not surprising considering there has been a castle on this artificial mound for 900 years, which throughout most of its history was designed for use as a prison until it ’s transformation in the 19th century into the Museum we know today. It is a building of many stages of change, architecturally diverse, with formidably complicated foundations, all of Grade 1 listed status

Hannah visually led us through the history, using archive material, the fascinating engineering challenges and architectural discoveries by means of working photographs and finally vibrantly informative computer images which took us on a virtual tour, unfolding layer after layer behind the hoardings, from the dungeons to the battlements

She would recap so that we never lost a sense of how the building was developing and the new elements were being introduced Every level will become fully accessible with excellent hospitality facilities and of course wonderful views across Norwich from the upper ones while the gem of the whole project will be the first British Museum Medieval gallery, the very first outside London bringing treasures of international importance to Norwich 5

Truly a must destination for everyone, the grand re opening of the Keep is scheduled for spring 2024. However, Hannah did emphasise that a good portion of the Museum galleries are open along with a full events and exhibitions programme Of particular interest for the Holt Society is the forthcoming Exhibition ‘ The Last Voyage of The Gloucester: Norfolk’s Royal Shipwreck 1682’ at Norwich Castle Museum Art Gallery, February September 2023

The Society is delighted to announce a talk by Julien Barnwell who discovered HMS Gloucester on Wednesday Feb 22nd here in Holt at the Venue, booking tickets will be advertised early February 2023 http://www.theholtsociety.org

Holt WI

The November meeting was well attended with three visitors There were two speakers this month The first was Lorna who along with her friend Rachel run The Treehouse Community Cafe in Holt This is a wonderful project which helps all people regardless of age by providing a place to meet, a community fridge and free children’s lunches They rely on donations and income from the cafe to keep going

Our second speaker was Gillian who gave a demonstration on wreath making She made a beautiful holly wreath assisted by a couple of WI members and made it look very easy This was kindly donated to the raffle

Our President Paula Hewitt spoke about the Venue where our meeting is held They are looking for volunteers to make cakes for their drop in cafe. The theme of this month was certainly to encourage people to help one another in any way they can and to support worthy causes Business was followed by the raffle and members were reminded of next month’s meeting which will celebrate Holt WI 86th birthday Fakenham Ukulele Band will be the entertainment and there will be cake!

He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree Roy L Smith

It is now over seven months since the long awaited new law for “no fault” divorce came into force on 6th April 2022 The ‘blame game’ has finally ended and lengthy separation periods cut completely

Blame is no longer required

Under the new legislation, couples now divorce without having to cite blame Previous grounds for divorce including unreasonable behaviour, adultery or separation periods have all gone. In the past, adultery could be used as a reason for divorce, however, under the new law, even if adultery has been committed, it no longer has a place in divorce proceedings

This does not change how hurtful adultery can be and some clients are still finding this new approach difficult to accept If one spouse has caused the breakdown of the marriage due to their adultery, why should they ‘get away with it?’ However, there is now only one ground for divorce and that is: the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage, hence the new term ‘no fault’ If one, or both parties believe the marriage has come to an end, they are now simply asked to provide either a sole or joint statement to apply for a divorce order However, joint divorce applications remain relatively rare

You can no longer defend a divorce

It is now no longer possible to contest the decision of a spouse to divorce Parties are encouraged to look to the future

New terminology

The old term Decree Nisi had been used by the court to mark the first stage of divorce after the acknowledgement of papers by the spouse and after the application had been granted by the court Under the new process, this stage of the process is known as a Conditional Order Similarly Decree Absolute, which marks the final stage of divorce, confirming that the marriage has officially come to an end, is now known as a Final Order This follows the current terms used for ending civil partnerships

There is a minimum wait period for the Final Order

A minimum period of 20 weeks between the initial application and the Conditional Order is now in place, with a further six weeks between the Conditional and the Final Order Frustrating to many clients, that means that even a straightforward divorce is taking at least six months to complete. All divorces are now applied for online

Is there a change to the court fee?

The court fee remains £593 00 It should be noted that a fee remission may be relevant to some couples, and this may help them decide who makes the application A code can be obtained online, if in receipt of

for example Universal Credit

How will the new law affect the division of finances?

The financial side of divorce has not changed Divorce and finances are separate but run parallel through the court system.

Clients are strongly advised to seek expert legal advice to resolve any financial disputes, and to document any agreement reached into a legally recognised Consent Order, which once sealed by a Judge, is then full and final and cannot be changed

A Strange

Day by David Abbott.

It turned out to be a day unlike any other as Old Bill Ogden left the house early, determined to work up an appetite for lunch It was bright, crisp and sunny But somehow it didn’t feel right

As he stopped at the gate pondering why, he realised it was eerily quiet He had no feeling of cold although it was a typical winter ’s day And why was the whole scene somehow odd? Everything was a bit blurry and slightly unreal

But he noticed with satisfaction the long standing arthritis in his neck and shoulder wasn’t giving him gip And his piles weren’t aggravating either After all this has to be a good day he thought as he drifted down the road.

Nearing the church, he saw the Vicar chatting to Vera, both of whom he knew well Passing he bade them “good morning ” But was taken aback as neither took the slightest bit of notice of him However, Vera’s dog went cross eyed and got agitated

Ever so slowly the landscape was getting more misty and weird He blinked. Down the road ran Mary, hair of gold and lips like cherries… with Tom Jones hot pursuit “What the hell is going on?” he thought Looking up he saw an owl sitting in a tree with a policeman’s helmet on his head It winked at him “I must be going mad ”

“I need a drink" he muttered to himself “ The pub will be open so at least I can get a pint and the locals are always happy to have a chat and put the world to rights ”

Having got there he found it closed There was a sign on the door “Shut for the day as a mark of respect for our friend Old Bill Ogden RIP ”

Turning he saw an odd looking fella with a long beard and carrying a scythe over his shoulder. “Sorry mate for messing up your day,” said the stranger “ The Boss sends his apologies and hopes you won’t be too cross ”

Christmas Greetings from Aid Africa!

Life is tough for so many of us and we’re reeling from the challenges of increasing costs, but it ’s on another level in Malawi.

Hunger is currently the worst it ’s been in years, with food and fuel very short and grossly expensive We’ve doubled our monthly Food Tokens and hope that other agencies don’t fall foul of the passage of grain out of Ukraine We’ll begin distributing maize at Christmas However, despite the difficulties, Aid Africa continues to shine hope and relevant help to thousands at risk Since we visited in March and April, reconstructing houses and toilets following the cyclones, we’re still building roofs for the homes of the frail and supplying plastic sheeting to those able to replace their own torrential rains are coming

We have more than 60 vulnerable teens on our new Education List, some still needing sponsorship school and exam fees have been paid and uniforms are almost made

During September we repaired 9 borehole pumps, restoring safe water to over 7,500 people, and last month provided 40 mosquito nets which will protect 145 mostly children from malaria, still a killer in Malawi. So, even though we’ve had to close our Holt Charity Shop, we’re still impacting some of the world’s poorest please help if you can Our new address for donations is Aid Africa P O Box 103, Fakenham, NR21 1BF, and you can reach us on 07726 93 93 00 for more info Our new website (www aid africa com) is just coming on line where the current monthly project is “Celebrate with Soap” funding thousands of bars of soap for distribution with our maize at Christmas if you can’t buy food you certainly can’t afford soap!

Our warmest Christmas greetings to all! Please contact us if you’d like to stay in touch, and many thanks for your valued support Lynda lyndamills@aid africa com

Dear Friends, Will you be in Church this Christmas? Whether I like it or not people will always find a reason not to go church, even at Christmas! The pews are too hard, the church is too cold, the services are boring or else the preacher goes on too long I don’t think anyone could acuse me of preaching long sermons, but one young person did one offer me a £1 on her way out of church When I asked her what it was for, she replied, “Well, my mummy says you are poorest preacher we’ve ever had!” However, the latest excuse that I have come across for someone not attending church is, that on their way to church they looked at their mobile phone and it said “no service” so they turned around and went home!

Whatever reason people come up with, Christmas will remain an invitation to come to church and hear again the Christmas story, the good news of God’s saving love for the world, revealed in the child Jesus born to Mary and laid in a manger. The birth of Jesus is God’s gift of love to us all.

Christians believe that Christ Jesus is love personified. Love made visible The means of our salvation and the promise of a life that will never end

With much rejoicing angels and archangels announced his arrival into this world, shepherds came in from the fields to worship him and wise men from the east travelled from afar to adore him You too are invited to journey to your nearest church this Christmas to celebrate his birth.

But of course the invitation is not just to come to church and hear again the story of Christmas, it is an invitation to make the story your own; to put the love of God at the centre of your celebrations and to share it with others.

In these difficult and uncertain days there is no shortage of opportunities to demonstrate your love for others, especially those in greatest need in our communities and around the world. In the child Jesus, God has blessed us with his love may we too become a blessing to others

May your Christmas may be blessed with the peace and love of the Christ child Happy Christmas!

Howard

Doing Our Bit

Dear Jo,

What a sense of despondency we have in this country at the moment We have a government that seems to want to pull itself to pieces; we have a Labour opposition that just slags off the Government rather than come up with useful and workable ideas to improve things, and we have the LibDems whose latest local 'mailout' was just a character assassination project, absolutely negative, and again no workable ideas to solve anything When I wrote to their leader Sir Ed Davy about this awful leaflet, I did not even get any sort of reply !

We have workers striking for ridiculously high (at the moment) wage increases, making life even harder for the poorly off, we have Stop The Oil protestors who seem to want to set the population as a whole against them, instead of getting us all onside (and meanwhile their protests jam up traffic, causing more pollution and achieving nothing!) What we need is some common sense and we would all like more money, but it just isn't there to be had

We need our political representatives to start working collectively on our

Eat Your Heart Out Mastermind!

120 questions, a super buffet supper, free tea and coffee, all for £6 inclusive who says good value is dead? Certainly not the 72 players at the Briston Sounds and Pictures Quiz at the Copeman Centre on Saturday October 19th! They battled with questions like what is the capital of Costa Rica what sort of beans do Heinz use for their baked beans and how many people can you get in an empty telephone box! The ultimate winning table of four players got a bottle of wine each while the losing table of four got an iPad each oh, sorry, that should read 'Eye Pad' A good time was had by all, with the questions appearing thick and fast on the big screen, and the event making an overall profit after food and raffle costs of £353 50

major problems and meanwhile, we, the backbone of our country, need to show more kindness and consideration to each other It's no use relying on those in Westminster to do it, we have to do this for ourselves look after our neighbours and our neighbourhood, encourage change in the way we live by example rather than disruption, and all take responsibility for our actions

Change is not difficult if we don't rely on others, we can do this, and we MUST do this! Basically, we live in a great country let's ignore the negativity and bias of our news broadcasters, see some of the good that is going on in the world, and let's all do our bit to improve things

Yours sincerely Mick Leary

Langham Dome Museum

The End of Another Season! Hello again! I can’t believe how quickly this season has passed By the time you read this, our Spitfire will probably have been put to bed once again for the cold winter months. As locals, you will know how very bleak it can be at the old RAF Langham site If the strong winds didn’t damage the plane, the weight of any build up of heavy snow and ice on the wings certainly would

After three years, our ‘ Team’, are becoming very adept at the erecting and dismantling of the Spitfire If you would like to see the operation, just go to our website where you will see a lovely video

Saturday 1st October was the date for our Grand Draw Day at Langham Dome There was a beautiful array of vehicles from the Norfolk Military Vehicle Group, with re enactors providing Dancing, Vintage cars, 1940’s Policemen, Air Raid Wardens and a Land Girl playing the Spoons, who all gave a wonderful sense of fun to the day

There was a total of £950 to give away in Raffle Prizes with a whopping £500 as first prize! We were honoured to have General, Lord Richard Dannatt, (former Head of The British Army) and his delightful wife, Phillipa, Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk, (who represents His Majesty in Norfolk) on board, to draw the winning tickets for us. On their arrival they were greeted by the strains of “ The British Grenadiers” from our 1940’s musicians on the day, “ TimeScape”! The first prize winner completely bowled us over by returning her £500 win back to the Dome as a donation to our charity Everyone had a great time on the day and a good sum was raised to help us to maintain this wonderfully intriguing museum for future generations

A big “ Thank You” to all our fantastic Volunteers, Norfolk Military Vehicle Group, TimeScape Singers and Re Enactors, who all gave their time freely and most generously The Winners of the raffle were 1st Prize. Ticket no 1685 Carol Wood from Reading 2nd Prize Ticket no 0574 David Marris from Blakeney 3rd Prize Ticket no 1421 Power from Leicester 4th Prize Ticket no 2581 Hugh Powell from Warham 5th Prize Ticket no 0064 Helen Armstrong from Langham Langham Dome is always looking for volunteers If you can spare even a few hours a month we would love to have you join our happy crew Just get in touch at manager@langhamdome org

Weybourne WI Hear the Gruesome Tale of the Red Barn Murder

Celia Howe, President, welcomed 28 members and 5 visitors to the Village Hall on Wednesday, 2nd November, for the meeting of Weybourne WI.

After a short business meeting, our speaker, Susan Parry, gave us an account of the notorious Red Barn murder, which took place on the 18th May 1827 Her talk was illustrated with numerous photographs

Susan began by describing the political situation at the time and the history of the Marten family. She then went on to detail the events which led to the murder of Marian Marten by her lover William Corder After fleeing the murder scene, he maintained the pretence that they had gone away together and told her family that they were married Maria’s family were suspicious, and her stepmother dreamt where her body was located It was later discovered by her father, buried at the Red Barn.

Corder was eventually arrested and his trial was held at Bury St Edmunds in August 1828 He pleaded not guilty, but it took the jury only 35 minutes to declare him guilty He was sentenced to death by hanging, followed by dissection of his body for medical science His execution took place in front of an audience of 20,000. An early book about the murder was said to have been partly bound with skin removed from Corder ’s remains

Susan finished her talk by revealing that she is a distant relative of Maria Marten The vote of thanks was given by Celia Howe The afternoon concluded with tea and biscuits and the drawing of the raffle

A Money-Savvy and Stress-Free Christmas

The most wonderful time of the year can be a bit of a tyranny, with endless adverts trying to convince us that if we are not going mad with endless buying and cooking then we are failing in some way March to your own tune this Christmas, by enjoying the season’s festive meal however you want to do it We are all feeling the pinch in our pockets this year, but let ’s not forget that the first Christmas was very simple indeed! The special thing about this occasion is not killing yourself trying to produce the perfect meal, but rather spending special time with the people that you share it with Take shortcuts, make full use of the special offers available at all the supermarkets, and go ahead and cook whatever you want for your festive meal Vegetables are all on special offer in December, so really the only expensive thing about this meal is the meat, and I guarantee you that even that will be on offer as supermarkets vie for our business If you’re vegetarian or vegan, use the recipe below which is delicious and full of good things, and looks like a really impressive centrepiece to your feast Tables can be beautifully decorated on the day with holly and ivy from the garden, and a few simple candles and baubles borrowed from the tree to cheer it up. Christmas crackers don’t have to cost the earth, and you can add extras into the cheaper ones such as chocolates and personal messages for your guests Make some festive mini sausage rolls for your guests when they first arrive, by adding in dried sage, fried leeks and chopped dried cranberries to your sausage meat, and rolling in your own home made pastry, which is so cheap and easy to make (see extra recipe below) Make your own mince pies for teatime too with the same pastry, adding in a few drops of your favourite tipple to the mincemeat to make it special Plan some simple games for the afternoon or go for a walk to ease off the dinner We will be at the Venue again for Christmas Day this year, so if you’re on your own or want a change, book in to join us. Whatever you do, do it your own way, relax and enjoy the day A very Merry Christmas and I look forward to bringing you some more recipes in the New Year!

Large handful dried cranberries

Nice One, Dave!

It just gets better and better! So said several of our very happy audience members as they left the last Briston Organ Show for 2022 on Friday November 25th; they had just enjoyed two hours of exciting and memorable music played by ace keyboard maestro David Harrild, using a Yamaha TRX multi keyboard system. His programme had included a jazzy version of 'Begin the Beguine', pan pipe classics from South America, a super choir based version of Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy', and a disco version of the theme from 'Star Wars', to name just a few out of the dozens of items he played to perfection

Live music at these shows is just so popular in Briston nowadays, and next year there will be seven more shows, including return visits of top musicians like Brett Wales and Elizabeth Harrison Tickets for these events are just £8 each, so you can hear top artistes locally without paying a fortune The shows take place at the Copeman Centre in

2 tblsp oatmeal

2 packs ready rolled puff pastry

Using some oil from the sundried tomato jar, gently fry the onion, celery, leek, carrot, and celeriac until pale and soft, being careful not to burn them, and adding in the mushrooms after 5 minutes Add in sage, paprika, the fennel, 4 or 5 sun dried tomatoes chopped finely and the garlic and fry for a further 5 minutes. Give the pan a splash of tamari and the miso and stir well. Taste and season. Tip in the lentils, chopped chestnuts and cranberries, and lastly the oatmeal and stir well to combine Set aside to completely cool Once ready to assemble and cook, unroll one sheet of the pastry, using its’ greaseproof wrapper to line the flat baking tray Carefully place the mixture into the middle of the pastry making sure it is firmly packed together and moisten all sides of the pastry with water Place the second pastry over the top of the first to encase the mixture, and flatten all round to seal it all in, trimming any excess and pressing down firmly If you have any offcuts of pastry, cut out some star or holly shapes to decorate the top, sticking them down with a little water Prick the top with a knife 3 times to allow air to escape, and brush with a little milk. Place into a preheated oven on 180ᵒ for approx 30 to 45 mins or until the pastry is golden and cooked through Serve immediately with all the usual Christmas side dishes

Fabulous Festive Sausage Rolls

First make the filling; gently fry off some finely chopped leek or onion in a little oil and set aside to cool. Mix some dried sage, salt and pepper and your leeks into a pack of sausage meat, and then fold in some dried chopped cranberries Dust your hands with a little flour and roll the sausage meat into long sausage shapes and set aside

For the Pastry:

8 oz Self Raising Flour

4 oz Butter/marg (I use Clover) A pinch of salt

4 tblsp very cold water to mix

Chop your butter into the flour and salt, and then using your hands rub in lightly until the mix looks like fine breadcrumbs Add in the cold water and bring together with a knife into a lump of dough DO NOT OVERHANDLE! Turn over a couple of times lightly to bring it together into a smooth ball, and then dust your surface with flour and roll out into a long rectangle. Place your sausage meat into the middle of the pastry and lightly wet one long side Roll the pastry over the meat and seal, slicing off any excess, and use a fork to press lightly into the sealed edge to decorate Slice into small rolls, and place onto a baking sheet, brushing the tops with a little egg and milk. Pop into a preheated oven on 180 ᵒfor 15 to 20 mins, or until pastry is golden and meat is cooked through Can be made ahead and frozen

Use the same pastry recipe to roll out and make mince pies, using a star cutter for the tops, which can also be frozen

Briston, a very comfortable venue, and raise much needed funds for both the Centre itself, and for the amazing ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital indeed, the shows in 2022 raised over £1700 for this wonderful charity

If you would like to be put on our mailing list, and get details of next year ’s programme, either 'phone Carol on 01263 860844, or email us on info@emjaymusic com, and leave the rest to us May we now take this opportunity to wish all our supporters a very Happy Christmas, and a very musical New Year!

Editor ’s Recipe

It’s December already and Christmas is just around the corner Those of you who are well organized have probably made your Christmas cake and puddings weeks ago, but for the rest of us who are not so efficient it is useful to have a few last minute recipes up our sleeves to plug the gaps. A very good recipe if you have not yet made your Christmas cake is Delia Smith’s last minute mincemeat Christmas cake (recipe available online), it is nice and moist and doesn’t need maturing and feeding

My recipe this month does away with the fid dly business of making mince pies if you are short on time, but still gives you the festive flavours and something to offer guests with a cup of tea Do splash out on good quality mincemeat as the basic ones tend to be too runny

You will need a traybake tin (deep sided baking sheet) about 12” x 8” lined with baking parchment so that it overlaps the sides

Ingredients

320g plain flour 200g cubed butter 100g ground almonds 100g caster sugar

1 jar of luxury mincemeat (about 400g) 120g flaked almonds

Method

Preheat the oven to 190C/170C fan/Gas 5

Put all the dry ingredients into a food processor and blitz until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs, alternatively rub the butter in by hand Tip ¾ of this mixture into your prepared tin and compact it firmly with the back of a spoon Spoon the mincemeat in an even layer over the crumb mixture

Add half the flaked almonds to the rest of the crumb mix and spread over the mincemeat layer (like a crumble topping), press it lightly down and scatter the remaining flaked almonds over the top Bake in the middle of the oven for about 40

High Kelling Garden Club

On Monday 14th November, Peter Skeggs Gooch from Thorncroft Clematis gave us a lively talk on the different varieties that will provide flowers all year round, from evergreen armandii and cirrhosa varieties in winter, the Atragene group (formally known as alpina/ macropetala/koreana/chinensis) and montana in spring, the early and midsummer large flowered varieties, through to viticella and tangutica species in the autumn There are also non climbing herbaceous varieties which will scramble through flower borders and smaller varieties suitable for containers Most prefer their flowers in the sun, but ‘Nelly Moser ’ (white/pink), ‘John uxtable’(white), ‘Prince Charles’ (blue) and ‘Comtesse de Bouchard’ (deep pink) thrive in shade

When planting, dig a good sized deep hole about 12” from a supporting wall or fence, break up the soil at the bottom and incorporate well rotted manure or compost, then add another layer of soil with bonemeal If your soil is heavy, put gravel or stones at the very bottom to aid drainage as clematis hate soggy soil (especially important for containers, which must be raised off the ground). Tease out the lower roots of the new plant and make sure the root ball is 3” below the surface before refilling the hole If your clematis is in a hot position, mulch with bark chippings to provide shade and retain moisture

Although clematis wilt can cause plants to die back, the biggest cause of failure is the brittle stems not being supported well enough at the base, so that they split in the wind

Most winter and spring clematis simply require tidying to a neat framework after flowering, as their flowers are produced from woody stems but, if they flower after June, take off the top third around Valentine’s Day then prune again to leave two pairs of shooting buds on each stem in early March When you plant a bushy new clematis, although it seems a travesty, it ’s best to reduce its height in this way, otherwise the newly forming roots can’t support the lush top growth Our garden club isn’t just for the residents of High Kelling all are welcome! The Arts Society Glaven Valley

The Arts Society Glaven Valley meets for lectures on arts and related subjects, once a month on the third Tuesday from September to June We meet at Cley Village Hall The next meeting will be on 17 January 2023 at 1 45 for 2 15 at the Village Hall in Cley

Come along and listen to Dr Tom Flynn talking about the History of Auctions from the Roman period, when the spoils of war were auctioned “Under the Spear,” through to the great book auctions of the sixteenth century and on into the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when auctions became the favoured means of disposing of furniture, paintings, works of art and the chattels of the great landed estates

Finally, he will discuss the global auctions of the current era Are high end art auctions really public sales or is something else happening behind the scenes? How transparent is the process and why do prices keep rising to such extraordinary heights? Are auctions contributing to international money laundering and similar white collar crime? This stimulating and lavishly illustrated lecture will tell the inside story of why the world’s most expensive paintings sell for such staggering sums of money

In addition to its expert monthly lectures, TASGV organises a programme of Study Days, visits and social occasions It also supports a Young Arts Group and other volunteering activities such as producing Trails of Discovery for local historic churches and venues, aimed at young people

Membership of TASGV costs £45 a year. You can come as a guest for £5 to see if you enjoy our meeting There is free parking in the car park next to the Village Hall New members are welcomed, and you can find out how to join on our website www.theartssocietyglavenvalley.org.uk The

Holt Holistic Centre

Greetings and New year Wishes from all at Holt Holistic Centre

What is true health? We hear a lot about the importance of being healthy but what does it actually mean to be healthy?

Well to start with, it ’s not just about being ‘not sick’ Health is much greater than that True health is when the body and mind are working at their optimal level and working well together It means having the energy and vitality to do what you want to do in life

The body is constantly being maintained in a state of homeostasis, an equilibrium, which includes what is normal for all physiological functions like blood pressure, sugar levels, muscle tension, posture, balance, breathing rate, oxygen levels, body temperature, etc this means, the body is always looking to return all of these things to an optimal level of ‘normal’ For instance, when you have a fever, the body does it ’s best to return to normal temperature Same as when you exercise, the body looks to return to a resting heart rate after stress or activity

It is important to listen to your body when it sends out messages of pain or ‘malfunction’ and act accordingly to resolve the bodies problems before they become chronic and alter the nervous system

A person with a healthy nervous system will not just be able to deal with illness or injury but will also be able to experience the many benefits of a healthier life overall

Here at Holt Holistic Centre, we have a group of experienced therapists who can help you to get out of pain and get you back on track to a healthy life, whether your pain is acute or chronic

Merry Christmas From Toll Barn Vets!

Christmas is fun for all the family, and that definitely includes all our pets! However, Christmas is often a busy time for our 24/7 on site emergency service as there are plenty of hidden dangers lurking during the festivities which we should all be aware of to help keep our pets safe

Christmas Cake, Christmas Pudding, Mince Pies and Fruit Bowls all contain raisins, sultanas or grapes. These should never be fed to pets as they can cause kidney damage and in severe cases kidney failure They can also contain alcohol which can cause signs of intoxication as well as dangerous drops in blood sugar levels, blood pressure and body temperature Not all dogs will be affected but there is no way of knowing which animals will suffer from toxicity so they are best completely avoided. Macadamia nuts can also be toxic causing neurological signs such as weakness, depression, tremors and vomiting within 12 hours of being eaten Onions and garlic can also be harmful (even when cooked) with signs such as vomiting and diarrhoea and potentially destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia) Many Christmas dinners include sage and onion stuffing or onion based gravy so it is best to avoid giving these “left overs” to pets.

Chocolate decorations are frequently used on trees and in stockings Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine (similar to caffeine) which is toxic to dogs The amount of theobromine varies with the type of chocolate (dark chocolate contains the highest levels) Depending on the amount and type of chocolate eaten signs range from vomiting and diarrhoea to wobbliness, seizures and changes in heart rhythm (arrhythmias) If your pet eats chocolate it is important to be able to tell your vet how much and what type of chocolate has been eaten as this will help us calculate whether a toxic dose has been reached

Some foods such as sugar free gum and diabetic biscuits contain xylitol Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar which is often used as a sweetener in low carbohydrate and diabetic products When pets eat xylitol their blood sugar level can drop rapidly causing lethargy and weakness and in severe cases, seizures Xylitol can also cause liver failure in some dogs The signs of this can take several days to develop We would advise urgent veterinary attention for any pet who is suspected to have eaten products containing xylitol.

Pets, especially dogs, have an exceptional sense of smell This means they will often hunt out bones, foil or string with meat juices from the rubbish bin or counter tops These bones are often brittle and splinter easily which can cause blockages or tears within the oesophagus and intestine whilst foil or string can cause obstructions within the stomach and intestine

Many of these (and other) foods also contain high levels of fat This can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and more seriously increases the risk of pancreatitis

There are also several household dangers which are more common at Christmas Tinsel and tree ornaments are particularly attractive playthings to cats and puppies If eaten these will often cause blockages and twists within the intestines of your pet requiring immediate surgery to remove the material Christmas ornaments will also often break if played with by pets. This can cause choking, cuts within the mouth and damage to the intestines if eaten Christmas trees themselves are also potentially toxic with pine needles causing irritation of the mouth (which may show as excessive drooling),

vomiting, diarrhoea and weakness

Naughty puppies and kittens have also been known to injure themselves climbing Christmas trees or knocking them over so it is always advisable to have a barrier to prevent access to the tree, as well as supervision!

Candles and fairy lights are always appealing to curious pets but can result in electrocution or burns Make sure electric lights and candles are always placed out of reach of naughty paws!

Heated oils create pleasant aromas around the house but can cause burns to the tongue and mouth if licked so make sure they are placed away from inquisitive animals

Festive bouquets often include lilies, but ingestion of the plant or plant pollen can cause kidney failure in cats If your cat comes into contact with Lilies and the pollen sticks to their fur immediately place a buster collar or t shirt on the cat to prevent them licking and ingesting more pollen and contact your vet for advice. Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias are also toxic causing vomiting, diarrhoea and depression Mistletoe has been known to cause collapse, changes in heart rate and erratic behaviour following ingestion

Poinsettia sap has irritant properties which can cause blistering of the mouth and stomach when eaten We would recommend all plants are kept well out of reach of inquisitive pets!

Most of these potential dangers are treatable if caught early enough so if you have any concerns about your pet during this festive period our 24/7 on site emergency service is available for our clients throughout Christmas and New Year on our normal surgery phone number (01692 407126)

We wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas!

A mobile community supermarket for the coastal areas of north and west Norfolk becomes the latest food hub to join the Nourishing Norfolk Network

The mobile community supermarket, offering low cost food and household products, has taken to the road in north and west Norfolk to support residents living in coastal areas who are finding it hard to make ends meet The Coastal Health and Wellbeing Community Supermarket van is up and running thanks to support from the Norfolk Community Foundation and becomes the 10th food hub under the umbrella of the Nourishing Norfolk Network

The revamped, former supermarket delivery van makes regular trips to Hunstanton, Walsingham, Little Snoring, and Blakeney and a static version can be found every Wednesday afternoon at The Hive Café at the Old Cottage Hospital It is headed by Simon Prince, General Manager of Coastal Health & Wellbeing at the Old Cottage Hospital, and Helen Roythorne, who has been funded by Norfolk Community Foundation to manage the scheme Mr Prince explained: “ The Coastal community supermarket is a low cost food club where people pay a one off membership to join and then they have access to food that is up to 30% less than mainstream su permarkets. If you want to access the service as a member the only stipu lation is that you must have a permanent home in either West or North Norfolk There’s a £3 50 joining fee and that lets you access any of the sites ”

One of the aims is to support health and well being in coastal areas this winter. Last year, Chief Medical Officer Sir Chris Whitty called for a national strategy to improve the health of coastal communities Sir Chris’s ‘Health of Coastal Communities’ annual report highlighted that, in 2019, the older age profile of the coastal towns’ resident population is particu larly visible in smaller seaside towns the proportion of the population aged 65 years or over was second highest in Hunstanton. That same year, King ’s Lynn and West Norfolk had the seventh highest mental health need in the country and, in 2020, nine of the 13 council areas with the lowest

average weekly wages were in coastal areas and they included North Norfolk

Mr Prince added: “Our aim is to help our community have access to healthy, nutritious but low cost food, which will help them live a healthier lifestyle and help them to get their finances to go a little bit fur ther, especially in this cost of living crisis We offer free fruit and veg, which is kindly donated to us by local suppliers; we have free sanitary products which help us to combat period poverty and we don’t just offer tins of beans we offer things like cleaning products, and pet food “We are hoping that this will become a five day a week project and are working constantly with the local communities to see where those needs are Sheringham will come online soon as will Holt and Fakenham and we will work together as a group to cover as much of the local area as possi ble ”

Coastal Health and Wellbeing at the Old Cottage Hospital is looking for corporate funders, volunteers and supporters to help with the Coastal Community Supermarket Email: simon prince@wellshospital uk or helen roythorne@wellshospital uk The Coastal Community Supermarket can be found in the following locations:

Monday (every week), 10am 1pm, Hunstanton Town Hall

Tuesday (first, second and third of every month, 10am 12pm, Walsingham Village Hall

Tuesday (first and third of every month), 1 3pm, Little Snoring Community Room

A New Book on Weddings & Marriage

by Local Celebrant and Author

This 'unique and very valuable book' (book review) has been written by local celebrant and first time author Natasha Hood She might be better known locally for the uplifting and welcoming community singing groups she offers across the county, but now she has turned her hand to writing as well Born of almost two decades experience as an interfaith minister and life celebrant, Natasha recently published ‘ Your Wedding and Beyond; Ideas to make your Heart Sing ’ , to empower couples to think outside of the box and create a personally meaningful wedding and marriage

Natasha grew up near Sheringham on an organic small holding, in a multi racial family After years in Scotland, she 'unexpectedly returned full circle and is currently happily settled back where she grew up' in beautiful North Norfolk She is the Musical Director of 'Sing Your Heart Out' (www syho org), a Norfolk charity offering singing for well being In 2005, she conducted the first ever legal interfaith wedding in the UK

Hailed as ‘the Engagement Gift of the Year!’, Hood’s book is a thoughtful, practical guide inspired by the wealth of wisdom and diversity from across the world on love, weddings and marriage While it is most obviously aimed at couples wanting a bespoke wedding ceremony, this book offers a fascinating read for anyone interested in folklore, history, faith traditions, customs, and the power and purpose of intimate partnership

Lights Train Set to Shine

The North Norfolk Railway ’s popular illuminated train, the Norfolk Lights Express, is now running The immersive experience combines the tradition and romance of an old time steam train with state of the art GPS controlled lighting and audio technology to create an impressive spectacle for the whole family

Norfolk Lights Express trains run from Sheringham on most evenings in December Lights mounted to the outside of the train illuminate the passing countryside to create an enchanting and constantly changing vista for passengers while 10 additional illuminated dioramas, at selected points along the lineside, add to the spectacle and help tell an intriguing story, brought to life by on board narration and music

Commercial Manager, Graham Hukins, said “Since it debuted in 2019, the Norfolk Lights Express has become a firm festive favourite and this year we have reworked the on board story and added additional lineside displays to make the show better than ever ”

He added, “We have also included a bar car in the train, so passengers enjoy a drink during the interval at Holt The trains are proving as popular as ever and although two thirds of the tickets have sold already, there are spaces available on most days ”

Advance booking is essential for the illuminated train; tickets include reserved seats and are priced from £20 00 Full details including dates, times and availability can be found at www nnrailway co uk

Ring Ding for the King

interest in bellringing started when I moved to Hindringham some 7 years ago St Martin’s church has 5 bells which have not been rung for some 70 years Why? I wondered Investigations revealed the bells to be in a very sorry state with cracks and even a chunk missing out of one of them Not put off, I determined to get them ringing again but if they were to ring, I had better learn how to do it. That coincided with a campaign launched by the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers called Ringing Remembers to recruit 1,400 new ringers to commemorate the 1,400 bell ringers killed in the first World War and 100 years since the end of WW1 It was very successful with 3,332 people signing up to learn and, on the day, 11 November 2018, 2,804 people rang in some form of commemoration A remarkable achievement Thousands of people discovered the joy of this ancient art, bringing companionship, joy, stimulation, relaxation, extra income earned at ringing for weddings, and a welcome in any and every* church in the country, and indeed across the world

But bell ringing does come with a health warning. It is totally addictive, and you can easily become obsessed I would ring every daty if I could and of course, that is the best way to improve A few months committed practice once or twice a week will see you ringing rounds competently with any band in the land After that, you will never stop learning, there is always more to discover and there’s always an excuse to ring Examples of recent reasons to ring quarter peals: Significant birthdays, christenings, weddings, anniversaries, funerals, national celebrations (Olympics, Commonwealth Games), Christmas & New Year, jubilees coronations, school fetes and end of term, graduations, World Peace Day, Norwich City win, All Fools Day, saints’ days, Speak Like a Pirate Day (and this from a vicar), International Chocolate Pudding Day, shopping centre opening, celebrating how much the grass had grown since the last quarter peal!

A peal is a minimum of 5,000 continuous changes of bell order, taking some

3 hours to ring, a quarter peal is 1,260, taking around 40 minutes and much more achievable for most people

And so back to Hindringham the tower was found to be cracked and my simple idea of getting the bells ringing has turned into a major project, thwarted by various issues including Covid but the determination to see bells ringing out again has only grown stronger A fascinating video produced by local bell enthusiast and sound recordist Chris Richmond can be viewed on YouTube at https://youtu be/ n1do mQdvI (search St Martin’s, Hindringham) Luckily there are many towers in the area to learn and no better place than St Andrew ’s Holt We practice every Friday night you may have heard us and is completely free What other activity costs nothing to learn? And as for the reputation of ringers only being interested in drinking beer and enjoying ringers’ tea and cake, well, you’ll have to discover for yourself whether that ’s true or not

A new campaign is being launched to recruit 8000 new ringers to ‘Ring for the King ’ marking the coronation in May 2023 Don’t miss out, give it a go, I’m sure you won’t regret it rather open up a new world of friendships and support for years to come. (*only a few, like Westminster Abbey, are by invitation only, requiring a cer tain standard of ringing)

Facial redness and spider veins are a common cosmetic and medical complaint These are particularly common in rosacea sufferers Numerous treatments are available and these produce variable results but laser and light based treatments are the gold standard treatment options

Recently intense pulsed light devices have gained popularity Unlike lasers, IPL devices produce a broadband light and effectively target a number of cosmetic concerns such as brown/ black pigmentation, red and blue vessels, enlarged pores and fine skin lines simultaneously Patients see gradual but very noticeable improvements with complexion blending and brightening, achieving photo rejuvenation of the skin

We have a number of anti ageing treatments available today These include anti ageing supplements, vitamins, lotions, potions and hormones What is striking is that none of this reverse skins ageing and prevent skin ageing to the extent that IPL and lasers does

We now have the technology and considerable experience of using this technology effectively to repair the appearance of damaged skin, delay and help prevent signs of skin ageing and also possibly reduce the risk of skin problems in the treated skin It works very well on the face, neck, chest, and arms and anywhere on the body

Free Fix if TV Interference Occurs in Holt

Mobile networks are being improved in Holt boosting speed, performance and coverage. There is a small chance these upgrades may cause interference to TV received through an aerial such as Freeview, BT, TalkTalk and YouView Symptoms could include intermittent sound, blocky images (pixelation) or loss of TV signal

Free support is available from Restore TV Restore TV ’s role is to ensure people can continue to enjoy free to view TV when mobile is upgraded in their area. It provides help to anyone experiencing interference to TV services caused by mobile signals Restore TV offers additional support for people who are 75 years of age or older, are registered blind or partially sighted or receive any of the following benefits: personal independence payments (PIPs); attendance allowance; constant attendance allowance or War Pensioner ’s Mobility Support

Ben Roome, CEO of Restore TV, said: “If you see new TV interference, we’re on hand to help you resolve the issue We can send a Restore TV filter, free of charge, for you to fit between your aerial lead and TV or set top box to remove mobile signals and allow you to watch free to view TV as normal Full instructions are included, and we can provide further advice online and by phone if needed.

“In most instances, fitting the filter will resolve any issues, but if this isn’t the case, we may also be able to arrange a follow up visit from a Restore TV engineer at no cost, depending on eligibility ”

Cable and satellite TV, such as Sky or Virgin, are not affected However, viewers with these services, who

also watch free to view TV through an aerial, can receive a free

TV filter

Residents are more likely to be affected if they live in an area with weak digital television reception, have a TV signal booster and whose TV aerial is close to a mobile mast.

For residents in flats or communal buildings, Restore TV provides landlords or property managers with support to resolve the problem Any viewers who experience new interference to free to view TV should contact Restore TV on 0808 13 13 800 (free from landlines and mobiles)

New Fakenham Tourist and Community Information Hub to Open

Two years after it closed Active Fakenham is working with local partners to reopen a tourist and community information hub in the town centre The Fakenham Info Hub will be open seven days a week and based in The Original Factory Shop in the Fakenham Upper Market Place

Richard Crook, from Active Fakenham said “ The Hub will consist of a section of The Original Factory Shop situated just inside the store entrance which will have leaflets and information for visitors to the town We also plan to have information about events and facilities for local people In addition, there will be a webpage on the Active Fakenham website, a physical noticeboard by the lift where local organisations can place notices free of charge, some social media under the name Fakenham Info Hub, a TV screen with information about Fakenham and an e newsletter which people can sign up to through the Active Fakenham website

We have already produced the first newsletter which is a cooperation between Active Fakenham, The Fakenham Info Hub and the Fakenham Community Centre we hope to produce one each month. The webpage will be fairly static and will focus on useful links and information We will post updates on our social media as often as we can

As Active Fakenham has no staff, we rely on the goodwill and support of local people, businesses and organisations. The Original Factory Shop has kindly allowed us to use the space for no cost, but there will be limited in the number of questions they can answer They will keep the leaflet racks stocked and the noticeboard updated

Although the Info Hub is open, we are still working on it and hope to have the official opening in the New Year I would like to thank the Fakenham Town Council, market tolls fund for a start up grant and others such as the Original Factory Shop and Aldiss for their support in this project

In addition, Active Fakenham is looking at producing a new Town guide to be distributed in 2023 We have produced and distributed the Town Guide annually for several years.

We urge local people and organisations to get involved in this initiative by

• Signing up to the e newsletter at www activefakenham org uk

• Visiting the centre and feeding back positive suggestions

• Letting us have posters (no bigger than A4) for the noticeboard These should be dropped off at the Original Factory Shop.

Why landlords cannot afford to ignore new measures brought in by the Government with regards to Energy Performance Certificates

In a bid to reduce carbon emissions in England and Wales, the Government have introduced regulations to improve the energy efficiency ratings of all privately rented homes to C or above by 2030

The energy efficiency of a property is determined by the energy performance certificate, which establishes a rating based on the performance potential and services of that property The energy performance certificate also includes a recommendation report which sets out the ways a property can be made more efficient for energy purposes, and these measures are a statutory requirement landlords must comply with

On 1 April 2018, the Government imposed restrictions on all new tenancies being offered where the energy efficiency rating of the property was F or G, and on 1 April 2020 this was extended to all tenancies.

To reach the target of all privately rented homes having an energy efficiency rating of C or above by 2030, the Government have proposed a phased trajectory, so that all new tenancies should have a rating of C or above by 2025 and all existing tenancies should have a rating of C or above by 2028

The Cost Cap and Exemptions

The Government have created a cost cap, which means that landlords are not expected to spend any more than £3,500 00 (including VAT) in improving a property’s rating to E or above

To assist with carrying out improvements, landlords can apply for funding from third parties such as Energy Company Obligation, local authority grants and Green Deal finance If third party funding only partially covers the costs or cannot be obtained at all, landlords will be required to contribute towards or fund the cost of improvements themselves

Any energy efficiency improvements made after 1 October 2017 may be included within the cost cap and if a rating of E or above cannot be achieved once the cost cap has been met, then various exemptions are available to landlords, including:

1 The ‘all relevant improvements made’ exemption

2

3

The ‘high cost’ exemption

The all insulation exemption

4 The third party consent exemption

5

6

The property devaluation exemption

The temporary exemption

Landlords must register the exemption, on a

self certification basis, before it can be relied upon

Improving the energy efficiency of large, older buildings is likely to be incredibly costly and it is therefore essential that landlords are aware of the funding options available to them and the exemptions that may be applied for, especially where they have a portfolio of buy to let properties

Penalties

If local authorities suspect that landlords are not complying with the regulations, or have misleadingly registered an exemption, they may serve a compliance notice requesting further information, to determine whether a breach has occurred and if established, enforce a financial penalty, of up to £5,000 00

How we can help

The measures brought in by the Government also apply on the sale and building of new homes and the purchase of buy to let properties and it is therefore essential that landowners understand the implications and comply with the regulations The above is subject to review and we recommend taking advice

Walking Rugby: A Game to Enjoy

Wednesday night means Walking Rugby A group of enthusiasts meets every week on that night 6 45 pm at Fakenham Rugby Club to experience the joys of a game which is open to all levels of ability The main rules can be learned in one session. Forget the complexities of the scrum and the line out. During a game two teams face each other across a smaller pitch: players walk, pass as in traditional rugby, and tackle by touching an opponent with two hands It is touch rugby for everyone and played in an excellent spirit.

Each week women and men compete with great enthusiasm The game is designed for sportspeople who are over fifty After a series of warm up exercises have been completed, games last an hour with more than one short break for the discussion of tactics. The group is

a complete mixture of first timers, returning rugby players and those who have experience of other team games The evenings are always fun Walking Rugby is played all year round The picture accompanying this article shows a great game of beach rugby which was played last summer, followed by fish and chips. What an evening that was!

Go on, give Walking Rugby a try Your first session will be free and, if new to the sport, you will be supported and coached every step of the way It ’s a really good way of exercising, improving fitness and socialising.
