The Holt Chronicle February 2022

A Note from the Editor

February is the transition between winter and spring, or so they say. The first snowdrops are here, so that’s hopeful. I have a nagging feeling the weather has a bit more in store for us before we are clear of winter. But let’s be positive, restrictions are lifting, and people are getting together again. Lots of groups and events are coming back – the new normal starting to take shape. In that vein, I notice a cautious return of some of our annual events this year. Holt Festival is in the pipeline, Sheringham Viking Festival is due to happen in April this year, we await news about the town carnivals and 40’s weekend. Another traditional event this month, Valentine’s Day, is a chance to treat your loved one and show how much you care. No matter if it’s a movie and take-away at home or a posh meal out, cup of tea in bed or popping the question, make someone feel special. Whatever you are up to, enjoy your February magazine. Keep safe and well. Jo – Editor. Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines.

Month March April May

Copy deadline Tuesday 1st March Tuesday 29th March Tuesday 3rd May

The Arts Forum

As has previously been reported, Cllr Bütikofer suffered two close family bereavements in the last year and has also now confirmed that her husband and fellow North Norfolk District Councillor Pierre Bütikofer is battling a serious medical condition. In a statement, Cllr Bütikofer commented:

“I am giving notice that it is my intention to resign as Leader of North Norfolk District Council as soon as a new leader can be elected by both my group and then Full Council. Until then I will remain in office and continue to complete my duties.

“It has been an immense honour and privilege to have led this council for the last three years and to have been the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group here for the last five and a half.” Steve Blatch, Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council, commented:

“I know that the decision to stand down from the Leader’s role hasn’t been easy, but things such as family and personal health and well-being are more important than any public role and on behalf of officer and member colleagues, we offer Sarah and Pierre our support, thoughts and best wishes in the weeks and months ahead.”

Wednesday 23rd February - ‘A Life in Film’. Anwen, Lady Hurt in conversation with Phil Barrett discussing her own and Sir John’s experiences working in the film industry. This is a free event, but booking is essential, so numbers are known. Arrive at 6.30pm, for a prompt 7.00pm start, finish 9.00/9.30pm. The bar will be open for refreshments.

The event is held in conjunction with the ‘February Feel Good Film Festival’, and ‘A Life in Film’ an exhibition of film memorabilia belonging to the late Sir John Hurt. This will include artefacts from some of Sir John’s most iconic films along with a selection of his drawings. See The Venue website for further details and for opening times of the exhibition.

Cllr Bütikofer will continue to serve as Leader while the Liberal Democrat Group takes forward their internal Group processes to elect a new Group Leader. There will then be a vote at a future meeting of Full Council to confirm appointment of the new Leader of the Council. At this time, it is expected that this meeting will be at a date in early February.

Blakeney Village Hall Film Night Film: Little Women.

Friday February 18th, 6.30~7pm.

There will be time, at the end of the interview, to put questions, have a drink, mingle, make new contacts, and share thoughts and ideas. Booking: 01263 713427; info@TheVenueHolt.com (although people can turn-up on the door they risk not being admitted.) Donations for The venue will be gratefully accepted.

At a recent Cabinet meeting, Cllr Sarah Bütikofer advised that she intends to resign as Leader of the District Council for personal reasons and will step down as soon as a new leader can be elected.

"I would like to sincerely thank Cllr Bütikofer for the significant contribution she has made in leading the Council over the past three years. Councillor Bütikofer has in recent months had to balance dealing with extremely challenging family matters while working with partners, council officers and members in leading the Council through a year which has seen us all working very hard to contend with the impact of Covid in the District.

News from the Venue

It’s wonderful to see everything getting back to near normal after so many months of uncertainty, and we are so excited to be planning a great line up for our upcoming Feel-Good Film Festival towards the end of February.

The Eye Man Fakenham Eyewear

Established 1999

Although through the lockdown we all got used to watching films exclusively on our TVs through platforms such as Netflix, Sky and Prime, there really is no substitute for the experience of ‘going to the movies’ and seeing films in their intended format on a big screen. We are so blessed to have our resident expert Anwen Hurt on board, guiding us towards to the best films, and the theme has been chosen to lift the spirits of those who come to enjoy what’s on offer. You can purchase a weekend pass for a reduced fee, and for the first time all the tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite as well as from the Venue. The bar will be open throughout the weekend, and delicious baked treats and baguettes provided by the Community Café will be available for you to have whilst at the festival. Anwen will also be sharing insights into her life in the movie industry during her interview at the Art Forum, booking for this can be done in the usual way through phoning or email. Don't forget to come into the gallery over the weekend of the festival to see the exclusive John Hurt Exhibition which is free entry, with memorabilia, photos and paintings spanning his life in film, for which we have Anwen to thank for giving us the opportunity of sharing this wonderful collection with the town.

We have another regular event in the diary for the 3rd Sunday of every month starting in March, with Jeff and Sue Short hosting Tea Dances to be held in the afternoons and including tea and cake. With a ticket price of only £7 per person, it makes a great Sunday afternoon event. We had our first in January with 70 people attending, so book in early to avoid disappointment.

We are seeing more and more people attending the Community Café every Thursday lunchtime, which is wonderful, and we hear regularly what a lifeline it is for some people. Similarly, the 60’s Club, who meet on a Monday in the Venue, provide a vital service in giving people a chance to meet and enjoy good company and entertainment every week. Both groups rely on the generosity of volunteers to turn up and help the events to happen and are self-funding. If you enjoy meeting people and think you can spare a couple of hours a week to enable these vital groups to continue to bless and help people in the town, please do call or email and join our family of volunteers; it’s rewarding and great fun to be a part of a group working on behalf of others, and there are also plenty of other events that you can join as a volunteer at the Venue. County Councillor News

from County Councillor Eric Vardy

Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grants The Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant (OHLG) is now live and North Norfolk District Council’s Revenues service has contacted all eligible businesses by email or letter inviting them to apply. In response to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, the Government announced before Christmas that grants of up to £6,000 would be made available to hospitality and leisure businesses. The £8 million paid to North Norfolk District Council to distribute is the largest single allocation to a Norfolk authority and is based on the District having over 3,000 hospitality, leisure and accommodation businesses, who continue to be hit hard by the economic impacts of Covid. The allocation comes from a national support package of £1bn, with North Norfolk District Council receiving over £8m to distribute to eligible businesses. Government guidance is available on what businesses will be eligible for support and how much funding each business will receive based on the rateable value of the property occupied. Businesses operating in the Hospitality, Leisure and Accommodation industry will be able to apply for grants of up to £6,000, depending on their rateable value. Please read what evidence is needed before going online to apply as only applications with the requested evidence will be assessed by the cut-off date of 25 February 2022. More information on the grant, including application, thresholds and amounts can be viewed on our website. Apprenticeships Norfolk As businesses get set to recover from the pandemic, now is the time to apply for financial and business support. Apprenticeships Norfolk has secured over £1.9m of external funding to help businesses develop their workforce through an apprenticeship scheme. There are a variety of grants and incentives available, to support apprentices and to support a business to start an apprenticeship. Information about all current grants and incentives can be found at: Grants and Incentives from Apprenticeships Norfolk Access to Apprenticeships, grants of up to £500 for 16–24-year-olds As of 1 December, new funding has been provided to address social mobility issues, ensuring financial barriers to apprenticeship opportunities are removed for individuals, particularly following the Covid-19 pandemic. Access to Apprenticeships (A2A) provides bursary grants to improve the opportunity for those aged 16-24 in Norfolk, to be able to start an apprenticeship. The grant, of up to £500, will help young people to access funding towards the cost of travel expenses or to buy the equipment they need to start work in a specific trade. It could also help provide access to digital equipment/connectivity. Progression to Apprenticeships (P2A), keeping young people on a career path Progression to Apprenticeships (P2A) is a pilot project running until June 2022. This project is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Community Renewal Fund to incentivise and support progression from previous ‘feeder’ apprenticeship schemes like Kickstart and Traineeships. P2A aims to increase the number of young people aged 16-24 moving into an apprenticeship by joining up existing initiatives. P2A will also help decrease the number of young people returning to Universal Credit/other benefits following completion of a feeder programme. Offering financial support at transition and in the first 26 weeks the pilot will offer reduced financial burden for the organisation at a time when the new apprentice needs more resource (supervision and mentoring) and is building the ability to ‘add value’ to the organisation. This mitigates some of the risks and costs associated with the onboarding and mentoring of new employees: • £1500 incentive; £500 paid on signup, £1000 paid after 12 weeks • Six-month wage contribution; paid upfront in two instalments, based on 37.5 hours a week at Apprenticeship NMW (one at sign up and one after 12 weeks) Further information about Norfolk Apprenticeships can be found at https://www.norfolkchamber.co.uk/ Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service Residents encouraged to Register Electrical Appliances Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service is supporting Register My Appliance week next week. They are encouraging the public to register electrical purchases so they can be notified by the manufacturer about faults or product recalls which may mean appliances in the home are potentially unsafe.

www.holtchronicle.co.uk

Many major house fires have been caused by electrical faults and in Norfolk the service attended 62 house fires linked to faulty electrical appliances and their cabling. Many other electrical fires they attended had other causes including misuse such as overloaded sockets, overheating, fluff in tumble dryers etc. Appliances can be registered even if they are not new, so if bought second hand or not registered at time of original purchase this is not a problem to do so later on. Appliances can be registered at www.registermyappliance.org.uk There’s more about home fire safety at www.norfolk.gov.uk/fire Health and Wellbeing - Active Norfolk New Activity Finder website for Norfolk launches to help people find exercise opportunities which suit them Active Norfolk is the Active Partnership for Norfolk, one of a network of 43 Active Partnerships created by Sport England. They are hosted by Norfolk County Council. Active Norfolk have recently launched a new activity finder platform called Every Move. The new platform now has its own website to ensure users who are looking to find exercise opportunities in their areas have just one place to look. The website works by activity providers, sports clubs and informal activity groups across the county registering an account and then using the site to list details of their activity sessions including times, locations, dates, facilities and accessibility provision. Providers and clubs can also upload images of their sessions and detailed descriptions so people looking to start a new form of activity can gain as much information ahead of attending the sessions as possible. The launch of the website has been timed to coincide with ‘peak season’ for physical activity as more people make resolutions to adopt healthier lifestyles through physical activity following the festive and new year periods. Visit the site now and find new ways to get active at www.everymove.uk

Holt’s February Feel Good Film Festival

The Venue in Holt is delighted to announce its second February film festival which will take place from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th of February 2022. Given the difficult times we’ve all been experiencing, The Venue, in conjunction with Holt Festival and the Sir John Hurt Film Trust has chosen a wonderful programme of the very best of films to bring a smile and to cheer the heart. With classic films such as Some Like it Hot and Breakfast at Tiffany’s to modern day hits like The Artist and Once, it promises to be a weekend of fun and laughter and there’s nothing quite like being part of a crowd as the lights go down and the credits start to roll. You won’t even have to go out to eat as the excellent kitchen at The Venue will be providing food and drinks throughout the weekend at very reasonable prices. Tickets at £5 per film are affordable and if you’re a real movie aficionado you can purchase a weekend ticket which will give you access to all 10 films for the discounted price of £40. Tickets go on sale online on Monday 17th January and there will be the opportunity to book tickets in person during designated times at The Venue box office from Tuesday 1st February (see www.thevenueholt.com for more details).

In conjunction with the film festival, The Venue is hosting A Life in Film, an exhibition of film memorabilia belonging to the late Sir John Hurt. The exhibition will include artefacts from some of Sir John’s most iconic films along with a selection of his drawings and will take place in the newly named Anwen and John Hurt Exhibition Space. The exhibition will be open during the festival and for the following week. Anwen, Lady Hurt will be the guest at the Arts Forum on Wednesday 23rd February when she will be in conversation with Phil Barrett discussing her own and Sir John’s experiences working in the film industry (see the website for further details and for opening times of the exhibition). Can I give up or amend my Inheritance after someone has died? By Kieran Athow, Solicitor, Hayes + Storr

Whilst the specific terms of any will are up to the individual who makes it, after they have died there may be circumstances in which a beneficiary does not wish to receive their inheritance or wishes to pass all or part of it to somebody else. Beneficiaries are not obligated to accept their inheritance, whether received under the terms of a will or under the rules of Intestacy.

Variation A beneficiary could choose to ‘vary’ all or part of their interest in an estate to another individual(s). This allows the ‘original’ beneficiary to choose the ultimate recipient of their ‘unwanted’ inheritance.

For example, an estate may have been distributed equally between the deceased’s two children, however, following the death, it may be the case that one child is financially independent and they may be content to forgo their own share in the estate (or part of it) to benefit their child(ren). There may be good tax planning reasons to adopt this approach.

Where the deceased did not leave a valid will, then their estate would be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy rules, which provide a hierarchy of relatives entitled to inherit from the estate. However, these rules do not make provision for unmarried partners (irrespective of the duration of the relationship) and, therefore, those relatives entitled to

benefit may wish to vary the distribution of the estate to provide for the deceased’s partner to benefit to some degree.

Disclaimer Alternatively, the beneficiary could ‘disclaim’ their inheritance, however, they must typically disclaim any inheritance in its entirety (unless the will provides otherwise).

For example, if a beneficiary receives a cash gift (legacy) of £10,000 and also a share in the residuary estate under a Will, they may be in a position to elect to disclaim the cash gift, whilst taking the share in the residue.

Typically, the disclaimed asset(s) would be distributed as though the original beneficiary had died before the deceased and the original beneficiary would have limited control as to the ultimate recipient.

How to vary or disclaim your Inheritance To vary or disclaim your inheritance, a beneficiary must sign a Deed of Variation/ Disclaimer. Further, the variation/disclaimer must be signed within two years of the deceased’s death to have retrospective effect for Inheritance Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax purposes.

disclaiming or varying your entitlement to benefit to ensure that this is carried through correctly. Our private client team members can advise on disclaiming or varying an entitlement to benefit under an estate and would assist in the preparation of all relevant documentation.

Dear friends, The tradition of being marked with the sign of the cross using the ashes of last year’s palm crosses, on Ash Wednesday, may seem a little strange to the majority of people in the 21s century. Yet this age old tradition is full or meaning and significance to millions of christians around the world. Ash Wednesday, this year falling on the 2nd March, marks the beginning of Lent, which mirrors the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness. For the faithful, Lent is a seaon of preparation for Easter and one that is characterised by prayer, devotion, study, fasting, self examination, confession, self denial and acts of kindness. In the Bible ashes are an ancient sign of penitence and sorrow for our sin . They remind us too of our own mortality. As we receive the imposition of ashes we hear these words; “Remember that you dust and to dust you shall return. Turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ.” Ash Wednesday, is a powerful reminder, if one is needed in these times, of our death but also that by God’s grace in and through Christ Jesus we have received the gift of eternal life. In a self obessed world it is surely not a bad think to be reminded of the fact that our time here on earth is short and that while we are here we should try and make a difference, leaving the corner of our world better than we found it. Lent gives us an opportunity to examine our consciences and motives which may lead us to change those things in our lives which fall short of what God requires of us. And what does God require of us? The prophet Micah put it succinctly when he wrote; He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah Ch 6:8 As we begin another holy season of lent and as we are invited to receive the sign of the cross in ash let us, while acknowleding our own short commings strive, with God’s help, to walk in the ways of justice, kindness and humility and to make a difference to those around us and the world in which life. Every blessing, Fr. Howard

Different Generations Gain Enjoyment as they learn from each other

One of the many consequences of the pandemic has been the increased isolation of older people, not just from the community but also from family members. This is a two-way issue as grandchildren have had limited contact with grandparents and vice versa, and both have missed the benefits: the life experience of the elderly for the young, and new ways of doing things for those who are older. At Age Concern North Norfolk we have recently started a series of new projects involving pupils from Gresham’s School in Holt, building on the links we have made previously. Initially, six young people and their teachers came to the centre and helped to improve the premises by painting the outside fences and seating; then they completed a Dementia Awareness session before meeting the clients in the centre.

Over the past two weeks, they have enjoyed the activities of flower arranging, painting, tabletop games and Bingo with clients and they are gaining in confidence in speaking to the older people and leading activities. This is an on-going project which we hope will benefit everyone involved – older people will have an increased sense of self-worth and feeling valued and will develop friendships with younger people and younger people will have a positive experience from sharing time and experiences with older people as well as the fun, enjoyment and personal reward of being part of this project.

Dear Jo, I would like to say a big thank you to all readers of Sheringham Independent/Holt Chronicle for the stamps they sent me for various charities I support. I have had a great response. Please do keep saving them for me. They can be sent to my address: 111 Mill Road, Cromer, Norfolk NR27 0AD Best wishes, Jayne Manning

Have you a problem with ear wax build up?

Ear wax build up can cause many problems.

The ear has a self-cleaning mechanism, but this can be easily disrupted if there is a physical obstruction such as hearing aids or ear microphones. It can also be damaged by using cotton wool buds or ntroducing other foreign objects into the ear.

Wax can become problematic if it is hard or dry and if it is made in large amounts. Wax production can be stimulated by frequent chewing, living or working in a hot dusty environment or having a high fat diet. There is no safe way to clear this build-up of wax yourself at home, but use of sodium bicarbonate drops can help to break the wax down and olive oil will make it easier to remove and helps to moisturise the dry skin in the ear. It is also quite common to have eczema in the ear, this will be made worse if the skin in the ear is not moisturised. It can lead to cracked bleeding skin and infections of the ear canal.

Do not use sodium bicarbonate drops if you suspect eczema in the ear or if the ear is sore at all.

Top Class Service! “Absolutely faultless from start to finish” - Mrs JN

The safest method of ear wax removal is by professional micro-suction. This is a procedure which involves the removal of wax under direct vision with a magnifying loupe. A small suction catheter is used to access the wax along with specialised instruments as needed.

Please give us a call to discuss how we can get you moving

Quick Curry

Are you trying to cut down on calories in a New Year health drive or just looking for a quick replacement for a take-away? This recipe fills the brief on both counts. Ready in about 20 minutes, adaptable and tasty. It also improves on keeping in the fridge for a day or two to develop the flavours. This recipe serves two but is easily doubled.

Ingredients

250g boneless chicken, cut into 2cm cubes/Quorn pieces 1 large red onion, thinly sliced into half moons 1 tbl spoon sunflower oil 2 tsps garlic and ginger paste (I use Tescos own) 2 tsps chilli paste from a jar I can chopped tomatoes

2 tsps garam masala 3 tbl spoons fat free natural yogurt Chopped coriander (optional)

Method

Heat the oil in a large pan, add the onion and gently fry until soft and translucent. Add the garlic and ginger paste and chilli paste and fry for a further I minute. Add the tomatoes and about 100mls of water, bring to a simmer and cook for 2 minutes. Add the chicken and sprinkle over the garam masala, mix well. Cover and cook for about 6-8 minutes (check the chicken is cooked through). Take off the heat then stir in the yogurt, sprinkle with the fresh coriander if using. Serve immediately with boiled rice, cauli rice or warm naan bread. Enjoy.

Fast and Fabulous Food!

Why is it that we crave the kinds of foods that are so bad for us? And while we’re at it, why MUST food be fast? We have never had so much variety and abundance, yet many of us fill our bellies with substances that provide us with little nutritional value and a whole heap of chemicals that our bodies struggle to process; little wonder that we fall ill. Surely mealtimes should be long leisurely events to savour and enjoy? Yet we have been conditioned by the food industry to crave instant fast foodstuffs such as burgers, and who doesn’t enjoy a big, juicy quarter pounder jam packed with pickle, cheese, ketchup, mustard, mayo, fried onions and salad? (My mouth is literally watering as I type this!) So, the only way forward is to make your own at home.... admittedly this takes me a little longer than driving to a takeaway, but I know exactly what's in it and feel no guilt after devouring it! The following recipe has been tweaked over many years to become the spectacular outcome it now is. You will also notice that it contains no meat or dairy –helpful for those of you who are vegetarian or vegan, but also a great addition to any recipe repertoire to enable us to get more veggies, nutrients and fibre into us. Don’t be put off by Tofu; it is a great and affordable protein source, and if you use the Tofoo brand which is already pressed to remove excess water, it is very easy to use and tastes delicious. The result is the juiciest, most flavour filled burger you could want, loaded with goodness and no nasties. If you wedge some baking potatoes and toss them in a little olive oil and roast for around half an hour, you have a mega feast to be proud of, rather than a takeaway to regret.

enough oats and flour to bind it all together, ensuring you have mixed it all in well, and form first into a firm ball, and then flatten into a burger pattie, smoothing out the edges (if the mix feels a little dry add another splash of tamari and a little splash of olive oil.) Place on an oiled baking tray and put in the fridge to firm up for at least an hour (you can make these well ahead of time and keep in the fridge for up to a day if you cling film the top) When ready to cook, place in a preheated oven on 180 degrees for about half hour, checking after 20 mins-they should be heated right through and just starting to brown. Serve in a good quality wholemeal bun with caramelised onion, melty cheese and salad, with your preferred dressing.

Beautiful Big Burgers (Tofoo Style) Olive oil 1 pack smoked Tofoo patted dry and grated 1 very large flat mushroom, finely chopped 1 onion, finely chopped 2 tsp Smoked paprika 1 flat tsp Garlic salt Good splash Tamari or Soy sauce Splash balsamic vinegar 1 vacuum packed cooked beetroot, grated Tsp Brown miso paste, mixed with a little warm water 1 to 2 tblsp porridge oats 1 tblsp chickpea flour

Method Gently fry the onion in a little olive oil for a few minutes or until pale and soft, then add the mushrooms and Tofoo, stirring for a few minutes. Add the paprika and garlic salt and the splashes of vinegars and stir to combine. Remove from the heat and stir in the beetroot and miso and email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Right on Target

On Sunday 9th January 2022, Holt Woodlands Archery and Airgun Club, Holt, Norfolk was host to members of the Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club, Cromer. The proprietor, Jonathan Hancock was presented with an AFVBC Certificate of Appreciation plus an AFVBC Shield and named as honoured amongst our local Veterans. The certificate was presented by Holt resident and local Veterans’ Chaplain, Bishop Dr John Mills RN and the shield by the Right Honourable Duncan Baker, Member of Parliament for North Norfolk.

Jonathan is and has been a great supporter of Cromer AFVBC and has done everything in his power to facilitate the use of the Archery and Airgun Club by Veterans. He has been a real stalwart in helping our local Veterans and others who have their own stress and problems, even at a time when he was going through his own battle with stress and some difficulty over the archery club and grounds. Suffice it to say that Jonathan is a great guy who has gone out of his way to help, and he was made an honorary member of the Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club.

The Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club meets at 1000 every 3rd Sunday of the month at Breakers Café Garden Street, Cromer. Those who have lost loved ones are especially welcome. For those veterans who are financially challenged, homeless or in need, we offer free breakfasts. ! Contact afvbccromer@talktalk.net

One of the main issues for Veterans today is their mental health and PTSD with increasing levels of suicide amongst veterans. Sadly, more veterans die of suicide than they do in combat and therefore, the ethos of the club is mutual support, advising and supporting on welfare issues or just providing an arm around the shoulder. The natural willingness to help others stems from the tradition and camaraderie that life in the Armed Services instils.

Aid Africa

Aid Africa—is already helping those suffering the effects of the disaster in Malawi. This week Cyclone Ana has devastated the southern region of Malawi. Up to now, 11 people have died, some are still missing, and 217,000 people have been impacted, many local to our Centre. High winds and rain ripped off roofs, destroyed houses, and collapsed outside toilets—causing concerns over sanitation and risk of disease. Household goods—including precious food reserves —and personal belongings, were also lost. Here’s just a glimpse of magnitude of the challenges in the lives of just 3 of our neighbours—a tiny percentage of the enormous sudden need in our area. As one of the poorest countries in the world, this level of damage to lives and property is tragic leaving many in despair for their family’s future. Aid Africa is a small charity, founded and managed in Holt, but we have the infrastructure already in place to get help to the most vulnerable within days. We’ve already provided plastic sheeting, but so much more is needed… Will you help? Please call into our shop -Aid Africa charity Shop, 7 Shirehall Plain, holt, NR25 6HT, send a cheque, or see the donation section on our website www.aid-africa.com for simple ways to make a difference.

What is True Health? by Sara Thornley, Holt Holistic Centre

overall. This means they can express more energy, more productivity and be able to live with more vitality. I (Sara Thornley) am an experienced therapist who uses an integrated treatment using a combination of techniques and exercises that you can use at home to aid your healing process.

What is true health? We hear a lot about the importance of being healthy – but what does it actually mean to be healthy? Well, to start with, it’s not just about being ‘not sick’. Health is much greater than that! True health is when the body and mind are working at their most optimal level and are working well together. It means having the energy and vitality to really do what you want to do in life.

For more information about the techniques that I us please call Holt Holistic Centre 01263 711898 or have look at our new website.

Live Music for All at Briston!

The body is constantly being maintained in a state of homeostasis – an equilibrium, which includes what is normal for all physiological functions like blood pressure, sugar levels, muscle tension, posture, balance, breathing rate, oxygen levels, body temperature, etc. this means that the body is always looking to return all of these things to an optimal level of ‘normal’. For instance, when you have a fever, the body does its best to return to normal temperature. Same as when you exercise – the body looks to return to a resting heart rate after stress or activities.

Lovers of the best live music around know all about the wonderful organ shows we hold throughout the year, but if you've never been to one, now is your chance to hear one of the UK's best performers playing your kind of music! On Friday February 11th, we will have the very popular Nicholas Martin back with us again. His repertoire is just so varied, from pops to classics and everything in between. We will be at the Copeman Centre, Hall Street, Briston, NR24 2LG, starting at 7.30pm, doors open at 7pm. Advance booking is essential to avoid disappointment - you can get your tickets now by 'phoning Carol on 01263 860844, and you can even pay by credit or debit card if you wish; tickets are just £8 each, and profits from our excellent refreshments and raffle are ploughed back into the Centre's funds and the wonderful ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital project.

The body and brain are connected. The brain needs to know what normal is, to communicate the right messages to the body – and vice versa. The connection is vital to restore a healthy ‘normal’. Our everyday activities matter. What we are doing day to day can stretch the parameters in negative ways – being stressed either emotionally or physically for a long period of time means the body considers the stressed state normal.

McTimoney and CranioSacral therapy are designed to help your body to reset and heal by aiding the nervous system to heal itself. McTimoney manipulation is a non-invasive, whole-body treatment using only the hands to realign the spine and other joints of the body. With gentle adjustments, the technique is effective in relieving pain, reducing stiffness and reinstating balance.

We have comfortable seats, good acoustics, a large screen TV to show closeups of the player's hands in action, and wide level Nicholas Martin access suitable for disabled visitors - and the parking is free and right outside the door! We also have very Covid-safe precautions in place for your safety. Do come and join us, it's the musical bargain of the year!

A person with a healthy nervous system for a prolonged period of time will not just be able to deal well with illness or injury (i.e., ‘not be sick’) but will actually experience many of the benefits of a healthier life

Holt & District Dementia Support

Holt & District Dementia Support - Poppy Café is expanding! If you listened to the news recently you would have heard of the predicted increase in the number of people living with dementia over coming years. In Holt, we are already seeing that increase, with many more families approaching our charity for support. Having successfully maintained our services throughout the pandemic, we are currently looking to increase our provision in order to meet this rising tide of need. Since the beginning of January, we now offer weekly Poppy Café sessions on Monday mornings as well as our well-established Tuesday Café.

Clearly as our services expand our need for volunteers also increases. If you enjoy convivial conversation, fun activities, coffee and cake, plus the satisfaction of giving someone living with dementia the opportunity to enjoy a pleasant social outing, perhaps you’d consider volunteering. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to join in and extend the hand of friendship to families in need. If you feel you could help, please contact Claire Roberts.

Being a carer of someone living with dementia can be lonely and challenging, both physically and emotionally. Poppy Friends began last year, aiming to offer additional support for those in this situation by providing a monthly meeting for carers to enjoy a coffee and share experiences. If you think this might help you, please contact Helen on 01263 711870 for further information. Should you or a family member be living with dementia, H&DDS is ready to welcome you. Apart from our Poppy Café every Monday and Tuesday morning, we continue to offer Poppy PM every 2nd & 4th Thursday of the month and Poppy Home Visiting. Keeping your pet smiling!

performed to assess the extent of disease below the gum line in the root / socket area as this is invisible to the naked eye. These investigations determine the extent of disease and ideal treatment options. At Toll Barn we have a fully equipped dental suite including dental x-ray and our in-house vets have a particular interest in dentistry and are always happy to discuss treatment and prevention options for your pet.

We all know dental check ups are essential for our children and ourselves but what about our pets? Dental disease can affect all species and is regularly seen in cats and dogs over 3 years old.

Initially invisible plaque causes gum reddening (gingivitis) which progresses to mineralised brown tartar (calculus) that frequently requires dental scaling. Caught early gingivitis can be reversed, however, over time it progresses to periodontitis with tooth loss and infections of the tooth, gum and jaw bone, with a risk of infection spreading to other organs via the bloodstream.

Prevention is always better than cure and our team of qualified veterinary nurses are happy to provide our clients with free of charge dental appointments to show you how to provide the best dental care for your pet. If you are concerned about your pets dental health, or want to get your puppy or kitten started on the right track with oral health, or just want to discuss our specialised dental treatments including our state-of-the-art dental x-ray, please contact our team on 01692 407126.

Dental disease in cats poses particular challenges as they also suffer from chronic gingivostomatitis, a disease where inflammation spreads from the gums to the rest of the mouth. In this condition the body mounts an over-exaggerated immune response to tartar and plaque causing painful inflammation.

Treatment is complex and may involve tooth removal, antibiotics and immunosuppression, and should be discussed with your vet.

Similarly, Feline Resorptive Lesions affect large numbers of cats. These lesions erode the area between the tooth crown (above gum) and root (below gum) causing teeth to fracture. Advanced lesions can be detected by visual inspection, however, early lesions are very painful but only detected by specialised dental xray and therefore dental x-rays are always recommended.

Before

When detected early dental disease can often be treated with brushing, however, as disease progresses treatment requires antibiotics, scale and polishing and even extractions. Not all dental treatments are the same and dental treatment should involve a thorough examination under general anaesthesia where every tooth is examined visually and with a special probe. Dental X-rays should be

Astley Primary Gets Thumbs Up from Ofsted

After

With special thanks made to the parents of the wonderful pupils of Astley, 'for working with us, putting the heart into Astley,' Jen explained that Astley will continue to strive to be more than just a school that teaches subjects, 'I am immensely proud to lead the Astley team who will continue to share their “passion, positivity and momentum.”

Jen Goakes became Headteacher of Astley Primary in September 2019. She responded to the recent two-day Ofsted Inspection in November 2021, where Astley was rated as 'Good' in all areas, by saying, 'The Ofsted framework changed radically in September 2019 -the very beginning of our new journey together here at Astley.'

Rob Martlew, CEO Synergy Multi Academy Trust said of the recent inspection, 'We are delighted with this outcome for Astley Primary. The fantastic staff and leadership team are determined to give every child attending the very best opportunities and this report is a celebration of everything that they have achieved so far.'

Having been through several school inspections, Jen explained how the bar has been raised for Good schools, with the importance of effective development and learning culture at the heart of the inspection. As inspectors noted, “Astley is a positive place to be, where children feel cared for and ready to learn.”

Astley Primary looks forward to seeing their future story unfolding.

The role of Astley's curriculum leaders was praised as a particular strength, enabling pupils to “flourish” and have positive impact on learning across all subjects. The effectiveness of personal development was described by inspectors as “Strong Good,” of which Astley's Pastoral Support Team have an important role.

Dr Pickhaver, Chair of Astley's Local Governing Board added that the Ofsted inspection process is extremely thorough and the Good result is due to the hard work of Astley's very comitted staff, led by Jen Goakes and her Senior Leadership Team.

Jen Goakes expressed thanks to Astley staff's relentless hard work, 'I truly believe that team is everything. Our two inspection days in November were the ultimate testament to how collaborative and successful this school community really is.' Astley Local Governing Board were also acknowlegded as having valuable, positive impact creating collaborative opportunities for Astley's development since 2019. Dr Pickhaver noted how parent support given to Astley is often reflected in the comments made in the local commnuity.

Stroke Support Group Plans for 2022

WEA Wells Branch - Dial H for Hitchcock!

Sheringham Stroke Support Group, covering most of North Norfolk from Wells to Waxham and the hinterland from Fakenham to Stalham starts meeting again at the beginning of March.

Following on from our 'Stage to Screen' day school last November, WEA Wells branch will be running another film-themed day course in Wells Maltings on Saturday 5th March. Our tutor this time will be Nigel Herwin and his subject 'Alfred Hitchcock - Master of Suspense'. Hitchcock is arguably one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema. Even today his ability to manipulate cinema audiences remains undiminished and his themes of murder, guilt and obsession still fascinate. Using film clips this day school will explore Hitchcock’s style, set pieces and preoccupations, and demonstrate that he truly does deserve the title ‘Master of Suspense’.

We are an affiliated member of the Stroke Association which is the only UK Charity concerned with helping everyone affected by stroke. Their website is stroke.org.uk They supply free help books on almost every subject concerned with stroke and work closely with local groups. We are an independent self-financing group who are calling all stroke survivors and their carers in North Norfolk who would enjoy a social afternoon twice a month. We meet at 2.15pm for a 2.30pm start and finish at approx. 3.45pm at St Andrews Methodist Church Hall in Sheringham on the Cromer Road next to Tesco NR26 8SA.

The course will be held in the main auditorium of Wells Maltings, where we will be able to use the building's state of the art projection and sound systems. There will be plenty of space for attendees to socially distance and the auditorium has a highly efficient 'outside air' ventilation system. It is as Covid secure as any public building can be.

Our last meeting of the September to December 2021 term was spent together having a festive Christmas lunch at the Cliftonville Hotel. We restart our meetings on March 2nd with a social afternoon and then continue fortnightly until June 2022. New & current members & carers will receive a warm welcome and enjoy a full programme which includes speakers, social afternoons, music, poetry, slide shows etc and in the warmer weather we usually go out for afternoon tea. After the meeting we have a cuppa, chat & a fun raffle encouraging members to bring a small item, then each member gets a prize to take home.

The day school will be available to book from mid-February. It will cost £18 and run from 9.45am until 4.00pm with a one-hour break for lunch. You can enrol online by going to www.wea.org.uk/eastern and entering ‘Wells-next-the-Sea’ in the ‘town/postcode’ box at the top of the page. This will take you to the Wells courses. Click on the ‘view details’ button next to 'Alfred Hitchcock - Master of Suspense' and then click the ‘Enrol online’ link. Alternatively, you can enrol by phoning 0300 303 3464. For help, advice or further details please contact Annie Whitelaw on 07856 792186 or email anniewhitelaw53@icloud.com. And please remember that these courses are open to everyone, you don’t have to be a member of WEA or one of our regulars, and anyone claiming income related benefits can attend for free.

Due to Covid19 it is recommended to wear a mask, if possible, for peace of mind & the chairs are spaced apart in the hall which has good access. There is a large car park & disabled facilities are available for wheelchair users inside the building.

There is a nominal charge for each term of £10 & carers are free. We would love to see you & further information can be found from Chris & Marian Sharp on 07932 168457 or email sharpcj44@gmail.com

High Kelling Garden Club

On 10th January, Stephen Foster came to talk to our club about growing and exhibiting sweet peas. He grows the Spencer peas which have showier blooms and longer, thicker stems than the old-fashioned types, but are not so heavily scented, although some varieties can still be quite fragrant. Sweet peas love rich soil and adequate moisture, so he adds layers of rotted manure, leaf mould and home-made compost to his beds. Seeds are best sown in either October or February, singly in root trainers in a conservatory or cold greenhouse. Initially, he covers the trays but as soon as the seeds start to shoot, after 5-7 days, the covers come off and the young plants get plenty of ventilation. Stephen doesn’t nip off the tops that would encourage them to bush because he is going to train them as cordons up vertical canes, about 9 inches apart. If a plant has two shoots, he leaves both until he is sure which one is dominant, then pinches the other out, along with all side shoots as they appear. The single stems are fastened securely with green rings to the canes after every node, tying and pinching out several times a week. When the stems reach the top of the canes, they are untied and fastened to the adjacent canes, so they are on the diagonal and easier to reach. Using this method, the flower shoots will grow long and straight, but will need harvesting as soon as the flowers open and MUST not be allowed to set seed, or they will stop flowering. The plants are given the best start, but Steve uses half strength liquid seaweed twice weekly, to top up fertility. A word of warning - cordon sweet peas are quite time consuming so best to resist temptation and grow just a few!

Ol’ man Simon, planted a diamond. Grew hisself a garden the likes of none. Sprouts all growin’ comin’ up glowin’ Fruit of jewels all shinin’ in the sun. Colors of the rainbow. See the sun and the rain grow sapphires and rubies on ivory vines, Grapes of jade, just ripenin’ in the shade, just ready for the squeezin’ into green jade wine. Shel Silverstein

Horatio Nelson – One of Norfolk’s Finest By David Abbott.

Horatio Nelson was born in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk in 1758 and destined to become a national hero and one of the country’s greatest naval commanders. At Christmas his friends would get an orange or set of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Greatest Hits, while young Horatio received a gift box entitled “Ahoy There - Junior Admiral’s Kit.” Containing string with Chinese instructions on ropemaking, wooden sword, a pair of sew-on epaulettes and an eye patch, he was the envy of the playground. Mums and Dads waiting at the school gate would cast an approving eye at the young Horatio saying: “That boy, he be destined for big things.” And they weren’t wrong.

Nelson’s rise in the navy began when, at only 20, he was given the captaincy of a Frigate. He tasted action in Nicaragua but was lucky to avoid yellow fever which wiped out much of his militia. He wasn’t so lucky in Corsica where a stray bullet took out his right eye.

The battle of St Vincent in 1797 was a turning point. His decisive actions led to a knighthood and promotion. But all was not plain sailing (excuse the pun). He lost an arm during an assault on Tenerife.

A series of engagements saw him enhance his reputation as a brave and inspirational leader and wily tactician, resulting in his promotion to Vice Admiral. Victory over the French in the battle of The Nile was rewarded with the title Lord Nelson. Along with all that glamour he also acquired a mistress, Emma Hamilton.

Not for Horatio crabbing or sitting on the beach with knotted handkerchief on his head. His ambitions and dreams lay in the wide blue yonder. But naval life in those days was as an exacting task given that the ships were wind-driven. Calls to “hoist the mainbrace” were often followed by cries of “Hold yew hard boys”, take ‘em down again quick”.

Given how fast wind directions can change and storms blow up at sea there was always the fear that a 64-gun man o’ war could be turned by a sudden gust and find itself firing broadsides at its own fleet. (HMS Victory had 104 making it doubly dangerous). Then there was communication using a system of hand-held flags. Cool dudes did it like The Village People. While waiting anxiously for the command to engage the enemy, naval captains would be perplexed to receive the message:” YMCA”. Perhaps that is why some ships preferred to hoist the flags on their masts?!

Nelson’s final hurrah came at Trafalgar in October 1805, when, he led his fleet in a successful engagement with the Franco-Spanish navy as it left port. Nelson was on deck aboard HMS Victory when he was felled by a sniper’s bullet. On his deathbed he turned to the ship’s captain and said:” Kiss me Hardy.” Hardy kissed him on the cheek. Are we sure? Well, three surviving eyewitnesses affirm it and said he kept repeating the request until unable to speak. Did Nelson have a sense of humour? We will never know. But if he had, he would have been looking down from his column and having a laugh when on December 21, 1954, he found himself in the Goon Show.

In this episode of the BBC Radio comedy classic Nelson complained about plans to get rid of London smog. “When the weather is really foggy, you see, it is the only chance we statues have to move around and see the sights.” It took the Clean Air Act to nail Nelson to his column for ever.

As 99 per cent of naval time was spent waiting around, you can bet signallers had occasions to use them for their own ends; “Please knit me more socks, Mum”, “Anyone seen my right leg? Reward offered.”

Anyway, I digress…..Nelson decided early on his career lay on the open seas. At 14 he bought some heated underpants and enlisted in an

expedition to the Arctic. He went on to join the Royal Navy, learning all the ropes, mastering sails, gunnery, naval warfare tactics and saluting with the palm of the hand facing downwards (unlike those landlubbers in the army).

CT Baker Hit Their Target for EACH

of Aylsham and Holt, and four Builders Merchant branches, the C T Baker Group presented EACH with a cheque for £25,700.18. Carl Milton, Managing Director, says: “I’m immensely proud of how determined and creative our team has been to achieve such an important amount over a particularly difficult two-year period. I can only imagine the immense difficulties EACH has faced with both their fundraising activities and in their day-to-day work caring for young people with life-threatening conditions. I’m confident the monies raised will make a positive impact to such a deserving charity.”

In 2020 the C T Baker Group partnered with East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice (EACH) to raise a milestone target of £25,000 in commemoration of reaching their 250th year anniversary trading as a family business.

Team members across the company took part in a range of activities such as raffles, sponsored beard shaves and even a tough 30-mile walk across North Norfolk. Bakers and Larners of Holt offered a special range of ‘250’ themed products including anniversary mugs and teamed up with local distillery Black Shuck to create a limited-edition gin, where a percentage of each sale contributed to the impressive target.

Caroline Allen, EACH Senior Corporate Fundraiser, is pictured with Mr Milton (left) and Mr Baker (right). She said: “We’re incredibly grateful to our friends at the CT Baker Group. As a team, they have worked so hard in challenging circumstances, because of the pandemic, to raise an extraordinary amount of money. It’s incredible and will make a real difference in terms of our work supporting families and caring for children and young people with life-threatening conditions. In addition to saying thank you, I’d also like to congratulate everyone at the firm for reaching their 250th anniversary. What an achievement and how incredible that a family-run company should be part of the local business community for such a very long time.”

Nick Baker, Senior Family Director, said: “We were committed to making a positive difference with our anniversary celebrations. After more than 250 years of being a part of the local community, supporting EACH has been a perfect collaboration for us, supporting local children and their families.”

Further fundraising for EACH is in the pipeline with a 1.6m owl sculpture painted with a landscape of Morston by internationally acclaimed young artist Kieron Williamson. The owl, named Molly, has been a key feature of Keiron’s exhibitions hosted at The Gallery in Holt and can now been seen on display at Bakers & Larners department store before finding her forever home and raising more much need funds for EACH.

After numerous fundraising activities across the department store, Budgens

Backgammon

The 2022 Winter Open at Gresham Village Hall drew 12 players who contested a 4-round Swiss, matches to 4 points (without cubes, in fairness to 4 newcomers innocent of them). Ian De’Ath (Hichstead) and John Ingamells (Cromer), the only players to have won all 3 matches to that point, were paired in effectively a knock-out final, a pulsating affair when Ian overtook John with a last-ditch gammon (2 points) to claim first prize and the trophy on offer.

Third prize went to Arthur Sinacola (Fakenham), who joined John on 3 won matches, and 4th prize to Jane Harris-Hall (North Walsham) with highest total of opponents’ scores. Another newcomer, Jill, had only been playing for 3 weeks but still won one match against a stalwart who shall be nameless.

New Book by Local Author

Holt resident Derek Godfrey has written a new book telling of his cricketing career and early life in Norfolk, where his father and grandfather helped found the Horsford Cricket Club in the 1940s, now the home of Norfolk County Cricket Club. He played for Norfolk at sixteen, at seventeen he played for England Schools at Lords. A year later, disaster struck, when through over-coaching, he lost the ability to bowl fast. Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and successful management and involvement of West End_Layout 1 31/01/2020 19:55 Page 1 large construction projects in the UK and around the world. Evolution of dermal fillers: The 4th dimension. Do we now have something that delays skin ageing?

• Dermal filler treatments are non-surgical treatments • Fillers can soften lines and wrinkles • Fillers can be used to restore lost facial volume • Skin-boosters improve skin health and hydration • Fillers can be used to provide a three-dimensional facelift • New research shows they can hold back years • There are more than 200 fillers in use, not all are safe • Most experts recommend avoiding permanent fillers • Improper use can cause problems • Treatments are largely unregulated so choose your practitioner wisely • At the Coltishall Clinic we specialise in providing a natural look and work hard to provide a safe and comfortable treatment.

Restylane range of dermal fillers has been used for 25 years and 50 million treatments have been carried out worldwide. Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM, Medical Director at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic says-“they come and they go, but HA based fillers have stood the test of time. It is not that we shy away from new treatments. For those of you who know us-we have invested heavily in new technology and have 25 state-of-the-art lasers and light devices.” Our doctors have personally carried out thousands of Restylane treatments over last fourteen years and it works, is very cost effective and it lasts longer than many other products on the market. We also use other reputable dermal fillers such as Belotero, Radiesse, Profhilo and Juvederm range which are also fantastic treatments. Dr Ava Lee BSc MSc MBBS MRCP (UK)(Dermatology) is our highly qualified Consultant Dermatologist and also offers some Saturday Clinics for your convenience.

When we first started doing dermal filler treatments the emphasis was on filling lines and wrinkles, we saw with interest as gradually we began to understand how our face ages and deflate with time. So the focus shifted to replacing lost volume. We moved from filling lines and wrinkles to adding volume. We also knew that in addition to loss of volume, gravity takes its toll and face begins to sag. We never thought that using fillers could fight gravity until new research came out just now that shows it is possible. We now have evidence that using hyaluronic acid dermal fillers strengthens the deeper layer of the face. This firms up deeper tissue, which resists gravitational descent. We can say with confidence that use of our treatments can delay ageing. One morning Emma woke up with a start. Her husband Jim asked what was the matter, she told him, "I just had a dream that you gave me a pearl necklace for Valentine's day. What do you think it means?" "You'll know tonight," Jim said. That evening, Jim home with a small package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, Emma opened it - only to find a book entitled "The meaning of dreams”.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

North Norfolk Photographic Society meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month at Cley Village Hall. Information about the Club and of the programme of meetings can be found on the website www.nnps.uk.

North Norfolk Photographic Society’s latest competition gave members the challenge of producing a ‘panel’ of five images based on any chosen topic. The entries were varied and portrayed members’ wide interests in subject matter and demonstrated all aspects of their photographic skills.

Paper Abstracts by Val Walker

Blakeney Bar High Tides

Bird Relationships by Mick Walker

In a photographic ‘panel’ competition, not only do the images have to be excellent individually, but they also must relate to one another and to be arranged (as a panel) in an interesting and attractive way The judge for the evening was Andy Swain who has visited the club previously; he was very thorough and viewed both the individual images and the overall effect of the chosen panel before giving awards. The evening gave members the opportunity to view the range of images as well as to receive useful tips detailing how to plan and improve a panel of chosen photographs. The results of the evening’s entries were: Gold - Val Walker – ‘Paper Abstracts’ Silver – Mick Walker – ‘Bird relationships’ Bronze – Paul Richards – ‘Banded Demoiselles’ Highly Commended - Liz Akers- ‘Summer Insects’ Lizzie Wallis- ‘Gannet Bonding’ Commended - Grace Glaister – ‘Windows into the Past’ Judith Wells – ‘Gannets’

See The Beauty of The Broads with Blakeney Rowing Club

There have been some tremendous Broads expeditions this winter as members of your local rowing club have explored the water around Barton Turf. Many outings have Wayford Bridge or How Hill as stopping points for refreshments. However, crews have ventured further afield as well. At the time of writing, plans are afoot to row to Coltishall and to Ranworth Broad with a pub lunch as the refreshment break. This is social rowing at its best with plenty of fresh air and good company. Most outings have been photographed and posted on the club website at crablakeney.wordpress.com. See the words and pictures on the blog to gain an impression of the fun to be had when skiff rowing. February sees the competition for the Robin Combe Challenge Trophy. The prize - in the form of an engraved, well filled hip flask - will be awarded to the fastest crew between the Gumboot Tree at Wayford and the turning into Cox's Boatyard; a course of 1.8 miles. Crews are already competing and seeking to shave seconds off their row’s time. See the blog for details of the contest. Why not try skiff rowing for yourselves? There is no obligation to compete; you may prefer to be a social rower who enjoys exercise amidst beautiful scenery in like-minded company. Everyone is welcome. During the summer there will be two rowing skiffs back in Blakeney; until then, The Broads provide some great rowing. Interested? Then contact club captain Humphrey at hborgnis@icloud.com. You can also gain further information on the club website shown above. Follow the club’s activities on Instagram and on Facebook. Come and join members of your local rowing club on the water. Stay safe. Barry Howes.

Wednesday 16th February - 7.00pm: “Jennifer Hudson’s voice rivals that of the Queen of Soul” ‘RESPECT’ 2021 (12) starring Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin, Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Tituss Burgess and Audra McDonald. Following the rise of Aretha Franklin’s life from a young child singing in her father’s church to her international super stardom, ‘RESPECT’ is the remarkable true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice and become The Queen of Soul. Review: A great movie about Aretha, an amazing singer! Wednesday 2nd March – 7.00pm: Based on the incredible true story of a businessman turned spy “THE COURIER” 2021 (12) starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel Brosnahan, Jessie Buckley, Merab Ninidze and Angus Wright. Review: Even though this is a true story - so you can find out the ending in advance - it was a really gripping film to watch and made me thankful for living in Britain in 2021. Well-acted with all characters very well portrayed.

Wednesday 16th March – 7.00pm: Disney “CRUELLA” 2021 (12) starring Emma Stone, Emma Thompson and Joel Fry. Emma Stone stars as one of cinema’s most notorious and stylish villains, Cruella de Vil. Determined to become a successful fashion designer, a creative young grifter named Estella (Stone) teams with a pair of mischievous thieves to survive on the London streets. But when her flair for fashion catches the eye of the legendary designer Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), Estella rises to become the raucous, revenge-bent “Cruella.” Review: Great movie for all ages! Recommended.

It’s widely recognised that using a silk pillowcase can help to prevent the dreaded bad hair day look! Silk doesn’t catch on the scales of our hair and is recommended by experts as part of hair care. Individual, hand made pillowcases, in an elegant and neutral shade of ivory. Gift wrapped in tissue paper with a smattering of scented beads makes this the perfect gift for the woman who has everything or just as a treat for yourself ............ because you’re worth it!

Weybourne WI make donations to two charities

On Wednesday afternoon, 2nd February, 32 members of Weybourne WI met in the village hall.

Celia Howe, President, began by welcoming everyone, including Louise Archer, from the charity Nelson’s Journey and Michele Bishop, a Trustee of the North Norfolk Food Bank. Following the conclusion of routine business, Celia presented a cheque for £200 to Louise, who went on to describe the work of the charity Nelson’s Journey and how it supports bereaved children. After two years of being unable to run the charity as they would wish, she hoped that activities would now be able to start again and assured us our donation would be put to good use.

We then listened to an interesting talk by Michele Bishop, who explained how the Cromer Food Bank, which started in 2012, was re-named the North Norfolk Food Bank last year. It is now part of the Trussell Trust, which has a network of over 200 food banks across the country. She went on to describe how the Food Bank works and how clients are recommended. The Food Bank is dependent on volunteers and couldn’t operate without them, or the support of local supermarkets and grants.

During recent months the need for help among all sectors of the population has been greater than ever and this is provided by the Food Bank in many ways, in addition to food parcels. Other help available includes: top ups to energy bills, school breakfast clubs, supplies for community fridges, microwave ovens for clients with no cooking facilities and sim cards. There were numerous questions and Pat King gave a vote of thanks. Michele thanked members for the generous donations they had brought along. As a speaker’s fee had been declined, an equivalent amount had been used to purchase items of food which were also donated.

One of the UK's largest residential developers axes ground rent increases

Leases are granted over properties and exist for a finite period of time. Once this period comes to an end, the property reverts to the freehold owner. When an individual purchases a lease, they do so subject to certain conditions, such as that they will pay ground rent periodically and that they will acquire the freeholder's consent if they wish to sell the lease.

An issue which has arisen in recent years is that developers have begun including provisions thereby enabling them to double ground rent periodically, which makes leases both difficult to sell and mortgage. In May of this year the Leasehold Reform (Ground Rent) Bill was introduced to Parliament and further to this, in September the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched enforcement action against developers including Taylor Wimpey, Countryside, Barratt Developments and Persimmon Homes for "possible unfair contract terms" relating to ground rent.

Taylor Wimpey have now voluntarily committed to remove any such unfair terms from their existing leasehold contracts and to exclude these terms from new contracts. The effect of this is that ground rent will now be set at the rate it was when the property was sold and will not rise over time. Countryside Properties has voluntarily removed the terms from their contracts and Aviva who purchased freeholds from developers also agreed to remove ground rent terms that were considered unfair. We wait to see if other developers will follow Taylor Wimpey without further intervention from the CMA and the outcome of the ongoing investigation in Barratt Development.
