A Note from the Editor
After a false start with the weather, dare I say Summer is here? Restrictions are easing and visitors are arriving in their droves, but we still need to exercise caution and stay safe. Having said that, it is vital for our local economy to provide a warm welcome to our visitors and help everyone to enjoy our wonderful town and all it has to offer. I mentioned the RNLI’s message on Safety in the Water last issue, and we are running their advice again in this issue, please have a look and remind everyone to take care and know what to do if you find yourself or anyone else in trouble. Above all, enjoy the Summer, now it is here. Whatever you get up to, enjoy your July magazine. Keep safe and well.
Jo – Editor.

Holt & District Dementia Support
At Holt & District Dementia Support we are now providing our full range of services and have taken the positive step of holding our AGM in person and starting the summer with an outing for all those who use our services. Our AGM was held in May and provided an opportunity for us to review how we had met the challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic and for our Chair, Claire Roberts, to thank all the members for their hard work and commitment throughout the year. Presentations were made to Kate Gosden, Trustee and Administrator, as she stepped down from her role and Judith Follows, a volunteer from the outset of our service, who was moving to Leicestershire. On the afternoon of June 8th, we were delighted to visit the gardens at Thorpland Hall, the home of one of our volunteers, Annabel Savory and her husband Nigel. Clients, carers and volunteers began by exploring the walled kitchen garden with its extensive areas of fruit, vegetables and colourful herbaceous borders ... with not a weed in sight! We then ventured to admire the lake with its wildlife and sumptuous, surrounding plant before sitting down to some delicious refreshments, absorbing the bliss of an idyllically sunny afternoon in the gardens against the backdrop of the estate's very fine Tudor house. What a wonderful way to spend a summer afternoon! We were most grateful for the extreme generosity and kindness of our hosts. Our charity continues to provide the welcoming Poppy Café every Tuesday morning, Poppy PM every 2nd & 4th Thursday of the month, Poppy Home Visiting and our latest venture, Poppy Friends. As the number of people being diagnosed with dementia increases, so does our need for volunteers. If you feel you could help in any way, please contact: Claire Roberts – Tel: 07760 462693 or e-mail: contact@holtdementiasupport.org.uk

Bodham and Beckham Horticultural Show 2021
We are really sorry, but we have to postpone this year's show until next year. We have re-booked the Village Hall for Saturday 23rd July 2022. The government's date for reviewing re-opening is July 19th, five days before the show, and is dependent on the number of cases of Covid-19 and the number of hospitalisations declining; those numbers are currently rising. We cannot count on the rules on social distancing ending at that point. We are really disappointed, but we need to be able to enjoy the event in its usual format and we hope that you will understand our decision. We hope to see you all in 2022. Alan & Shirley Prince Bodham and Beckham Horticultural Show Quiz
The eve of Horticultural Show Quiz, due to take place on Friday 22nd July, has now been cancelled due to further restrictions being imposed, and the postponement of our Horticultural Show. It is hoped, once life is made easier, to bring back the quizzes later in the year.

I’m Sarah your qualified sports massage practitioner and I have just started working at Holt Holistic Centre. I have a positive and energetic outlook on life and like to bring this to my clients. I enjoy all forms of exercise and empathise readily with like-minded people so I can help you overcome whatever niggles and knocks you may pick up. I will give you an honest and qualified appraisal and work with you individually to achieve your own personal goal to recovery.
Although I primarily carry out sports massage, you do not have to be sports enthusiast or into any sport at all to benefit from massage. I am also a qualified holistic massage therapist. So, if a sports massage is not what you are after I also offer deep tissue massage and Indian facial massage. So which massage should you choose? This all depends on the benefit you want from a treatment. Each type of massage is delivered in a slightly different way and this results in different benefits. The massage you choose is dependent on the result you want.
If you want to unwind and sleep better a deep tissue or Indian facial massage can help with relaxation and promote better sleep. If you want to move and exercise without discomfort then a sports massage combined with deep tissue can help iron out any soreness and restriction. But as none of us are a ‘one size fits all’, I will always consult with you on your treatment and work with you to tailor any massage, so it brings you the greatest benefit.
If you would like to book an appointment or discuss a treatment, please call me on 07786 745428 or go to my website www.sanamassage.co.uk

News from The Venue - July
Both groups do amazing work in combatting loneliness and isolation in our community and have relied up to now on volunteers and taxis to get their people to the Venue.
As we hurtle headlong into summer, we are more and more excited about the possibility of normality returning, and just so thrilled to be welcoming the Holt Festival in for some really amazing performances. It is wonderful to finally be able to see our new stage being used, and welcome audiences in to enjoy the arts once again. Don’t miss this opportunity to see some quality acts at the Venue; tickets can be purchased online at www.holtfestival.org.
The Café also operate a vital Meals on Wheels Service to the town, which also relies on wonderful volunteers who deliver using their own vehicles each week. We are now looking at a longer-term solution for these projects and getting costs on a Community Minibus, which will benefit groups at the centre but also hopefully other community groups too. I will keep you posted on progress for this exciting project! Bingo is starting up again at the Venue, always a popular night out, so come along and join the fun, and hopefully win a little something, on every second Wednesday of the month. Don’t forget to check out our website for all groups, activities and events, at www.thevenueholt.com. Carolyn Burn, Chairperson
Running alongside the festival is an amazing exhibition entitled ‘Habitats’ by Vanda Richards and Nicholas Elliott, two incredibly talented artists who are collaborating to curate their fabulous work in the Gallery for all to enjoy. Please do support them by coming to view their art; you will not be disappointed.
The arts have been sorely hit through this pandemic, so we are pleased to be able to once again reopen the Gallery as well as the rest of the centre and give artists an opportunity to sell their work. Needless to say, all relevant COVID precautions are being taken throughout to ensure everyone’s safety. It is turning out to be an expensive season for the Charity, as the drive is resurfaced and now some necessary gates are being put in place around the centre to prevent access.
We are having to take this step as there have been reports of antisocial behaviour which we obviously need to prevent, for the sake of our neighbours and for our users at the centre. These 2 projects alone will cost around £18,000 but are a vital expenditure if we are to maintain high safety standards and steward the Venue well.
What’s On @
Two of the groups that meet in the Venue, the 1960’s Club and the Holt Community Café both have local residents who need to be picked up to attend their groups, due to a lack of transport and mobility.

Chances Project
When Liza started working with the Chances project, she hadn’t had a job in nine months – but that was about to change. After Covid, everything was different: her employer had to let her go, and she’d lost confidence that she’d be able to work again. Her housing situation was precarious, too. She wasn’t sure she’d be able to afford her rent, and wanted to move to a more affordable flat. Liza wanted to work, and was motivated to find a job – but she needed confidence, and support, to help her take the next step. Chances provided that support. Liza worked one-to-one with Eniko, one of our Advocates, to update her CV, assist her with job searching, and helped her access opportunities to improve her English. In less than a month, Liza had attended an interview and been offered a new job, as well as securing a permanent tenancy with Clarion. Eniko even helped Liza search for used furniture around Holt, so that she could furnish her new home with a dining table and chairs. This is why Chances works. Advocates offer one-to-one, tailored support to help you take the next step towards work. We have time to spend with you, in person and face to face. It’s not just about pushing you into a job or getting you to log onto a website every day to prove you want to work. We’re here to support your wellbeing as well as your job search. You choose to work with us. Take a chance on us, we’ll create chances for you. In Liza’s case, she found a new job. We can also help you access training and education, improve or refresh your skills, help you overcome practical issues (like finding transport, route planning and childcare), boost your confidence, and help you get more active. If you’d like to learn more about Chances, you can contact Eniko on 07729 820290 or e.kovacs@ncab.org.uk, or William Schofield on 07518 432234 or w.schofield@ncab.org.uk. You can read more or sign up on our website, www.ncab.org.uk/chances-project.
Closure of local bank branch: TSB bank, Holt branch
On 17 June 2021, TSB bank, Holt branch, 1 High Street, NR25 6BN closed. This will doubtless be disappointing to TSB’s customers in Holt. However, alternative banking provision is available to local residents at post office branches nearby. The nearest post offices to the closing TSB bank, Holt branch are:
Holt PO, 8 Market Place, Holt, NR25 6BW High Kelling PO, Old Cromer Road, High Kelling, Holt, NR25 6AJ Salthouse Mobile Service PO, The Green, Coast Road, Salthouse, Holt, NR25 7AJ
Each of these branches offers banking services - including deposits, free cash withdrawals and balance checks, as well as offering face-to-face access to government services, bill payment, foreign currency, travel insurance and, of course, postal services. There are currently 2,000 free-to-use ATMs installed across the UK post office network also. Post offices are proving vital to retaining people’s and business’s access to cash as the banks continue to desert the high street in order to cut costs and increase their profits. Every post office plays a vital role within the heart of the local community. Post offices provide a reliable and essential service which has continued at a high standard across the whole of the UK throughout the pandemic. For further information, please contact Ruth Buckley-Salmon on 07766 524956 or via email at ruth.buckley-salmon@nfsp.org.uk

AGE CONCERN NORTH NORFOLK is delighted to announce that we will once again be opening our doors to clients at the Day Centre (Day Services Hub) for lunches, on a phased return basis. TRUSTEES NEEDED (All Ages)
If you are interested in supporting elderly people, do you have 6 hours a month for a year or more, that you could give to a good cause?
Age Concern is expanding its services under new management, and following the pandemic, is looking for new Trustees. You might be a young adult from age 18 wanting to gain experience, someone a little older with time to spare, or a newly retired professional such as a doctor, solicitor, social worker or accountant, with proven experience, wanting to “give something back” to your community. Age Concern North Norfolk is a self-funded charity, based in Sheringham, working for the benefit of older people across central North Norfolk. It supports people aged 50+ (some with dementia) by providing a Day Services Hub, Meals on Heels and other services. You will be joining a team of dedicated people who will offer support and welcome your ideas.

The Holt Chronicle July 2021
The long-term effect of delays in surgery caused by Covid-19
A study published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia has found that, in 2020, hospitals in England & Wales carried out 1.5 million fewer surgical procedures in 2020 by comparison to average figures over the previous 4 years, a drop of more than a third.
The effect of the Covid-19 pandemic, which resulted in the postponement of planned, nonurgent surgery in April and again in December 2020 had a significant effect, but there was also a 13.4% reduction in the number of emergency surgical procedures.
Researchers are concerned at the long-term effects on patients whilst hospitals attempt to resolve the backlog in elective surgeries, which is likely to take several years even with
Stuart’s
significant additional investment by the government. The study commented "Delays in the diagnosis and the surgical management of cancer will undoubtedly lead to an increase in cancer-related mortality."
Although the NHS disputes the way in which the study interpreted the data collected, it continues to encourage patients to access services when required, as normal.
It is likely that care for patients with serious conditions other than cancer, such as diseases affecting the heart, lungs and other organs, will also be affected. Researchers also believe that patients' mental health is likely to deteriorate whilst they remain on waiting lists.
Delays in diagnosis and treatment could lead to an increase in claims against GP surgeries, hospitals and other healthcare providers. In addition, as clinical staff work harder to clear the backlogs, pressure and the potential for mistakes in care will also increase.

I am delighted to be able to welcome the Holt Festival back to the Parish Church and I look forward very much to their programme of events later this month. During this past 16 months we have lost so much which adds value to the quality of our lives, brings enjoyment and aids our physical, emotion and spiritual well being. The Arts and live performances being one of those things that has been sadly missing this last year. Covid restrictions permitting, this years programme, will brighten up our summer and enable people to reconnect with one another and enjoy some splendid performances and fine art. I am grateful to the Festival Committee for allowing us to incorporate our very own series of festival concerts and I am also indebted to our director of music Mark Jones for arranging the following service and free concerts.

Dear Jo,
Council Development Plans
It looks as if the District Council scored two 'own goals' in its opposition to Gladman's appeal to build 110 houses and provide a site for a new school in the field at the end of Beresford Road, Holt. The council's Development Committee had voted unanimously against the scheme and the council leader, Cllr. Sarah Butikofer, and our MP and ex-District Cllr. Duncan Baker went to speak at the inquiry by the Planning Inspectorate at Bristol last October. However, the inspector's report says: 'The council failed to identify any harm to the character and appearance of the area or living conditions', and the council's opposition was weakened by the alleged open road access to the site by an independent highways consultant hired by the council.
The consultant's report, as presented to the development committee, said all the junctions on the road approaches to the site were clear but conceded that a school bus would have a tight squeeze passing a car in Beresford Road, the sole access to the site. In the light of reality this report appears to be worthless and a waste of public money. The consultant apparently failed to observe the long lines of parked cars that normally caused obstructions to the traffic flow around the blind side of the bend in Hempstead Road and past the Community Hub and the nursery school in Charles Road, including the junction with Beresford Road. Cars also park opposite the entrance to Lodge Close, the proposed emergency vehicle access to the site. These conditions would return in normal times post 'lockdown'. This site is not zoned for housing in the district development plan because, as the inspector acknowledged, the council already has a five-year supply of new housing sites in the district. A Gladman housing scheme in 2015 was rejected by the Planning Inspectorate and the High Court. The only difference this time was the 'carrot' of a site for a school, for which there is no immediate demand or funding. In her report, the inspector, Rebecca Norman, said: 'Beresford Road is relatively quiet at present and this will change. The proposed development would result in a significant increase in traffic levels on Beresford Road and there will be increased noise to the local area, particularly as a result of the school'. She admitted that this was a finely balanced case but she decided to approve the new estate, contrary to the local development plan and the 100% opposition expressed by the council and residents' letters. I feel this decision flouts the National Planning Policy 'to retain a good standard of amenity for all existing and future residents' (par. 17) and the 'peaceful enjoyment of one's possessions' inherent in Article 1 of the 1st Protocol of Human Rights.
Thank You
Dear Jo, I would like to thank the many (into the 100+) customers who signed my retirement cards at High Kelling Post Office. Whilst happy to retire after 50 years working for the network of Post Office, Royal Mail, Post Mistress of Cromer Post Office and being part of Jan Kemp’s team at High Kelling, I have to say I have had a wonderful career and I have enjoyed it all. My days have never been too long, hence the delayed years long past the official retirement year. During my 13 years at High Kelling, Dear customers, between myself and you, we enjoyed the laughter, courting some sad times, yet a friendship developed of which I am truly thankful. I lay my date stamp and pen down. Goodbye now. Many Blessings. Christine Page.
Reply to Vaugh Balding
Dear Jo, I am perplexed by Vaughan Balding’s remarkable letter (Holt Chronicle, June issue). Do we really have entangled particles in our brains? And do we really control evolution? If this really is the case then, how did they come into existence? Were they created by God or whatever or, simply evolved? I would like to get to the bottom of this mystery! I can see collectively we are a universal quantum algorithm as I have studied religions and philosophies for 57 years. Phone 07887 793666. Yours sincerely, Maurice Gray.
Big Thank You
Dear Jo, The ladies at TSB in Holt would like to say a big thank you for all the cards, gifts and good wishes received from customers. It has been a pleasure serving you and getting to know you over the years; we will miss you all. Warmest wishes from Sue, Mel Sal and Ali
Yours sincerely Cedric Greenwood
Toadally Successful!
Dear Jo, Earlier in the year you were good enough to publish a letter from me in the Holt Chronicle with a little photograph that you’d found, telling readers about the annual Toad Migration at Hempstead and Selbrigg and asking for volunteers to help rescue them from the traffic that uses the roads that cross the toads’ route. We gained some new volunteers and retained most of our existing team had another successful year at both Sites. At Hempstead, just over 2,400 toads were saved and at Selbrigg there were just over 5,600 saves, so the activity was very rewarding and most worthwhile. We were down on numbers of saves slightly compared with last year, as were other groups around Norfolk and the wider field but it does vary from year to year and the variation was well within the norm. So a big thanks to all who joined in this year and also a big thanks to the Chronicle for helping and supporting our cause. With best regards John Mangan, High Kelling email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Chorizo, pea and Parma ham risotto
We've been incredibly busy at the Grove since reopening and it's been so lovely to welcome back old friends and new faces to both our restaurants - the a la carte, still going strong, and of course Sundown, our new stone-baked pizza and Norfolk tapas restaurant set in two giant tipis in the grounds of the Grove. Our wonderful staff have done an amazing job getting things up and running to the very high standards we had pre-Covid, and it been very rewarding to see some excellent reviews and generous compliments. They're a top team and we are very proud of them all. This risotto dish is a really useful string to your culinary bow as it can be adapted for pretty much everything. Our sous chef Kharn is particularly fond of this version, possibly because the parma strips are perfect for snacking on, but also for various professional reasons I'm sure.
Ingredients
2 tbsp mild olive oil 1 grated onion 2 grated garlic cloves 250g arborio risotto rice 100ml white wine 1 litre chicken stock cube, made with 1 stock cube 250g chorizo, roughly diced 200g frozen peas 6 slices of Parma ham 75g grated Grana Padano cheese 25g butter freshly ground black pepper

Method
Heat the oil in a large, non-stick saucepan over a medium heat; add the onion and garlic and fry for 2-3 minutes until softened and beginning to colour. Add the risotto rice to the pan and stir well for 30-40 seconds, until the oil has coated the grains of rice. Pour in half of the wine and allow to simmer for 30-40 seconds, then add all of the stock and bring to the boil, stirring well. Reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 8-10 minutes, stirring frequently, until the rice is almost tender and the risotto is creamy in appearance. In a separate pan, fry the chorizo for a couple of minutes and drain off the oil. Lay out the parma ham on baking paper on a tray and bake in the oven 220c for three minutes; leave to cool and harden. Stir in the remaining wine, the chorizo and the frozen peas, then continue to cook, stirring constantly, for a further 4-5 minutes, or until the chicken and peas are heated through and the rice is tender with a slight bite. Remove the pan from the heat, then stir in the butter and cheese. Plate and add the strips of ham as garnish; season with black pepper.

HOLT SUNDAY MARKET
Love Holt have announced that following the success of the market returning to Holt on 6 June for the first time in 50 years, further markets will run every Sunday in July and August and the first Sunday of the month in September, October, November and December. This milestone is a major accomplishment for Love Holt on its mission to help Holt positively adapt itself following a difficult year on the High Street.
"The market will enhance Holt’s core offer bringing in more local independents, providing visitors and residents of the town an opportunity to spend time together in a great environment." says Iain Wilson, Lead at Love Holt. He added “The success of a 'makers' market' last July and August laid the foundations for something more substantial and long term.” Each market runs between 10am and 4pm and features local artisan makers, street food vendors, communal dining, a DJ and buskers.
The 6 June Sunday Market attracted nearly 3000 visitors. Parking spaces were available but extremely busy. The reach on social media as 70,000 and Holt Traders had a successful day matching Saturday trading levels.
Seasonal Treats
We can all enjoy a little of the more expensive ingredients that arrive seasonally without breaking the bank, by finding clever ways to make a little go a long way. I love making quiche, and it’s such a great way to stretch more expensive ingredients. Hot roast smoked salmon is a rich and indulgent way to enjoy salmon, with a huge depth of flavour that works so well in a quiche, and marries perfectly with asparagus, a seasonal favourite. Feeding these things to a family of four is rather costly though, hence the recipe featured in this issue. Don’t be afraid to make your own pastry; if you don’t over-handle it or over roll it and use cold bowl/knife and butter you will be fine. I also prefer self-raising flour as it gives the pastry a better texture. Homemade always tastes better. This recipe is for a large quiche for a family, but you can easily adjust it for a smaller one. Use good eggs for quiches; it makes all the difference. Feta is a deliciously light cheese to finish the recipe off; all in all a wonderful taste of summer!
Salmon, Asparagus and Feta Quiche For the pastry: 8 oz self-raising flour 4 oz butter/Marg Salt Approx 4 tblsp very cold water For the filling: 1-piece hot roast smoked salmon 1 bunch asparagus, chopped into bite sized pieces 8 eggs, beaten with a little single cream Pinch nutmeg Dried or fresh dill ½ pack feta cheese Salt and pepper

Spending money on mending your car, improving your home, buying new clothes seems normal to most people but not so much when it comes to spending money on your wellbeing. Surely this is one of the first things to pay attention to? Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live in. Anna can be contacted at Holt Consulting Rooms, Tel. 01263 711712.
Make the pastry by cutting the butter into small pieces and adding to the sifted flour with a pinch of salt. Rub in until mixture resembles crumbs, and add the water, bringing it together with a knife and then into a ball with your hands and cover with clingfilm, placing into fridge until needed. Meanwhile, lightly steam the asparagus { only for a few minutes } and set aside. Beat the eggs and cream with a pinch of nutmeg and a flat teaspoon of dill. Roll out pastry and line a large, fluted flan dish, pricking the base all over with a fork. Crumble the salmon into the base and add the asparagus, ensuring even distribution. Carefully pour over the egg mix, being sure not to disturb the salmon and asparagus too much. Crumble up the feta and place on the top and put into a preheated oven on 180° for approx 40 mins, or until set. Serve immediately. Also delicious eaten cold. Carolyn Burn

Paul Richards’ Brown Hare in a Blizzard
Judge John Wilcox patiently looked at 65 photographs submitted by members and made helpful comments on every one before giving out awards to those he judged to be the best. In fact, the overall quality was so good that he put 31 of the images to one side for further consideration before issuing his final list.
There were 8 Gold awards – the winners. They were Frederic Landes’ Linnet Nest Building, Paul Richards’ Brown Hare in a Blizzard, Lizzie Wallis’ Oystercatcher with Mussel, Diana Knight’s Hyena Hierarchy, Liz Akers’ First Light, Val Walker’s Mountain Clouded Yellow and Wildflower Meadow and Mick Walker’s Brown Hooded Kingfisher. Volunteering with the 1st Holt Scout Group is Good for You!
So says Trevor Banks, their Group Scout Leader. We have all been through some very difficult times during the Covid-19 pandemic. Thankfully, with the success of the vaccination programme, it looks as though we are coming to the end of it but there is little doubt that its effects will influence our lives for a very long time. Young people have suffered along with everyone else. They have missed seeing their friends and other family members. Their school lives have been turned upside down with exams being cancelled and an uncertainty of what the future holds. They have also missed the security that attending school gives them, and the support from their school friends and relationships. The pandemic has affected Scouting too. In one year, across Norfolk, we lost 24% of our membership; that’s 2,200 adults and young people who for whatever reason were unable to carry on, whether due to the pressures of the lockdowns, their uncertain work conditions or because of the needs of looking after family members or other loved ones. Scouting is still important though; it gives our youth members ‘Skills For Life’ helping to prepare them to take an active and responsible role in tomorrow’s society. They will have developed skills to make decisions, learnt that they can achieve as individuals and the importance of teamwork whilst developing leadership skills along the way. Here at the 1st Holt Scout Group, we also lost youth and adult members. However, since things began to relax, our youth membership has started to recover and we are getting regular enquiries from parents about their children joining which is fantastic. We are also building a new team of volunteers to help us provide the best Scouting we can to all of our members. Scouting is not just for the younger generation; it is good for adults too. Volunteering with the Scouts is flexible and centres around the time that you can afford to give. You don’t have to be another Bear Grills (we already have one of those) but everyone has skills they can bring to our party. Are you someone who enjoys story telling or running games? Do you enjoy arts and crafts because our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts do? Perhaps you enjoy getting out into our wonderful countryside and would you like to help our members to feel that joy too? Why not come along to help out at your son or daughter’s section, it’s a great way of spending extra time together? Or perhaps you have skills as a fund raiser or organiser or would just like to come along and help where you can, whenever you are able to; volunteering with The Scouts at 1st Holt is flexible. If you used to be a member and remember the fun that you had or perhaps you would just like to come along and see where you could help, we would be pleased to see you and see how we can help you fit in. If you would like to know more about volunteering then please go to our web page https://1stholt.org.uk and complete our contact page and someone will get in touch for a chat.
Holt Men’s Shed - Next Steps
Following unavoidable delays due to the pandemic, plans for setting up a Men’s Shed in Holt are finally taking shape. We now have the full and ongoing support of Duncan Baker, MP for North Norfolk, who is passionate about seeing this project through to completion and putting Holt on the map. We are very lucky to already have a venue to host the ‘Shed’ thanks to Independence Matters on Charles Road and now just need to engage fully with potential members in order to finalise things prior to the launch. Men’s Shed are community spaces for like-minded men to connect. Utilising members’ existing skill sets and creating new ones, the Shed is a ‘hands on’ community space that is not only building practical opportunities but also providing valuable social connections. “Shedders” get involved in community projects such as restoring village features, helping maintain parks and making things for schools, libraries and individuals in need. Activities in Sheds are diverse, but usually consist of carpentry, metalworking, restoration projects, electronics, modelling or car building. Depending on restrictions at the time, a public meeting is scheduled for the last week in August. This is currently planned to be socially distanced and held outside near the new venue for the Shed - Independence Matters, Community Hub, Charles Road, Holt. To register interest in attending this next exciting development event of the Holt Men’s Shed please contact Stephen Hurley on telephone/text: 07748 335041 or email: stephen.hurley@norfolk.gov.uk.

Police Have Launched Summer Initiative to Protect Norfolk's Wildlife Habitats
RSPCA Insp Becky Harper said: "This year we are expecting an upsurge in people, who would normally go abroad for holidays, doing UK based staycations.
Visitors to Norfolk's coast this summer are being encouraged to act responsibly around wildlife. Norfolk Constabulary has signed up to the national initiative Operation Seabird to raise awareness of the importance of protecting and preserving our rich wildlife habitats and tackling disturbance to seals, sea birds and nesting birds.
Officers will be out and about meeting visitors in specific locations across the county – including the beach on the Holkham estate, the Holme Dunes, Snettisham Beach to Heacham south beach, Winterton and Horsey beaches and Blakeney Point – between the beginning of June and the end of August. PC Chris Shelley, Norfolk Constabulary's Rural Crime Officer, said: "We always work closely with conservation charities, local councils and other key partners right along Norfolk's coastline to identify areas of concern. "We're proud to be taking part in Operation Seabird this year and our focus will be on protecting our vulnerable ground nesting sea birds, the Little Terms and Ringer Plover, ensuring the seals on our beaches are not disturbed and educating and encouraging visitors to be responsible and consider how their actions may affect our wildlife. "We all have a duty to act responsibly and take extra care when we're out and about. While the focus of Operation Seabird is to engage, explain and educate visitors, we will act against anybody who wilfully and intentionally damages and disrupts our wildlife and their habitats.”
Previous incidents along our coastline have included dogs off leads disturbing nesting birds or seals, wild campers lighting fires on the beach dunes and causing significant damage to the fauna, quad bikes or 4x4 vehicles riding over nesting areas and canoeists getting too close to seals
"It should be remembered that our beautiful beach & coastal areas, which are fun for us to play in, are natural habitats and breeding grounds for many native and migratory animals, including several species on the endangered list. We humans share this space, and we can easily and unwittingly cause disturbance, fear and distress. "For many tourists it can be surprising and exciting to see marine mammals, including seals & their pups which will normally rest on the beach at various times of year, as well as ground nesting birds which are usually resident between March to September. As tempting as it is to approach them, we would respectfully ask that all people are careful to: maintain a good distance; don't try to get close enough to touch or take selfies; read signs, stick to paths and keep dogs on leads where instructed to do so; and keep dogs under control at all times." Anyone who witnesses the deliberate and intentional disturbance of wildlife and their habitats is encouraged to contact Norfolk Police on 101 quoting Operation Seabird. Operation Seabird was launched in 2020 by North Yorkshire and Humberside Police along with the RSPCA and is supported by local authorities, RNLI and wildlife trusts.

Holt Festival 2021
I am absolutely delighted to launch Holt Festival 2021 and to introduce you to our programme which I hope you will love as much as I do.
First things first though, and with the health and security of everyone involved very much in mind, we have elected to programme the festival with the current Covid protocols in place so performances will be socially distanced, masks will need to be worn for indoor events and we will be operating track and trace. Should restrictions be lifted, as we all hope they will be, additional tickets will be released so do keep an eye on our website and social media for further announcements.
Our opening night is Wednesday 28th July and we have a variety of performances throughout the rest of the week at different venues in Holt, culminating with The Vagaband outdoors on Saturday evening.
We’re delighted to be supporting some of our other wonderful East Anglian talents like Luke Wright, The Jefford Brothers and Holt-based poet and writer James McDermott but we also have some exciting internationally known performers including Dom Joly Julian Bliss who will be performing a mixture of classical and jazz clarinet works accompanied by Robert Bottriell and the fantastic Dom Joly with Holiday Snaps: Travel & Comedy in the Danger Zone. For those of you, like me, who have spent much of the last year in the garden, a special treat with Bob Flowerdew and No Work Gardening. I will be avidly taking notes!
Tickets can be booked online via our website at www.holtfestival.org
For lovers of the visual arts, the Sir John Hurt and Sworders Art Prizes shortlist exhibitions open on Saturday 24th July at Adrian Hill Fine Art and in St Andrew’s Meeting Room.

The hidden danger of collars Most of our canine companions wear collars and indeed it helps fulfil the legal requirement to have a tag with required details. However, collars can also pose some hidden dangers for our furry friends. This beautiful lady, Pip, was rushed to Toll Barn Vets as an out of hours emergency when she had been playing with her canine companion. During the play session both dogs became entwined in each other’s collars.
When Pip arrived at the surgery she was in shock and had a lot of air trapped underneath her skin (subcutaneous emphysema). The cause of this air was damage to the trachea (windpipe) as a result of the collar putting pressure on the trachea and causing it to rupture. This in turn caused a life-threatening condition known as tension pneumothorax – a condition where the area around the lungs fills with air under a high tension and causes the lungs to become compressed and unable to inflate therefore preventing poor Pip from being able to breathe. Luckily for Pip our team were on site and ready to help. The location of
Weather Forecast
the damage to the trachea and extent of the chest damage were determined using our onsite CT scanner which allowed us to build a 3D picture of the trachea and chest. Our team undertook a delicate surgery to repair the tracheal damage using our endoscope to avoid the need for conventional “open” surgery. At the same time our team placed chest drains to remove the air accumulation around the lungs allowing the lungs to reinflate. This type of life saving procedure required use of our specialised monitoring equipment anaesthetic protocols and we are delighted to say that despite all the severity of her injuries Pip has made a full recovery.
If you would like to discuss your pets needs give our friendly team a call on 01692 407126.
Sadly, similar injuries occur when dogs become caught on their crates by their collars and in the most severe cases these can cause life changing injuries.
Whilst collars are often needed it is important to be aware of the potential harm they can cause and consider removing them prior to unsupervised dogs playing together or being crated unsupervised.
LANGHAM CAKE STALL
The past three months came out as predicted the main point being the slow transition from winter-spring-summer temperature wise plus an erratic distribution of rainfall. Sea temperature was below or well below average and with persistence winds in from the sea beach weather it wasn’t. The next three months will continue the improvement slowly establishing itself giving us longer finer spells and higher temperatures although the cold North Sea will be continuing its influence on us from time to time so a few degrees either side of twenty will be what we will get the majority of the time. Rainfall is always difficult to forecast longer term and summertime storms will occur but where and when is impossible to predict but there will be some. Best described as a typical British summer. Coltishall Clinic- Introducing breakthrough technology to tone and shape the body
be positioned over the muscles to be treated. You will feel pleasant sensation. There are muscle contractions but no pain. After 30 min the applicator/s will be removed and you will be able to resume normal activities immediately. What precautions are needed during treatment? No electronic devices/ mobile phones/ jewellery or metal objects are permitted due to strong magnetic fields. You are welcome to bring a book/ magazine to read.
Is it possible to build muscle without breaking a sweat? Yes, indeed it is. We now have the technology to build muscle and burn fat- all whilst you are comfortably reading your favorite book or magazine! This is all about shaping your body in an effortless way. 4 out of 10 people say that they are not happy with their bodies. 42% of people dislike their abdomen, followed by their thighs. Now, they can do something about this- in an easy way.
How many sessions are recommended? 4-6 sessions, two sessions a week.
Thanks to our machines- high focused electromagnetic energy is used to induce supra-physiological muscle contractions to build muscle and burn fat. Supra-physiological means it is not possible to stimulate so many muscle fibres to maximum intensity solely by voluntary exercises. The machines work by inducing forced muscle contractions as muscle fibres are exposed to electromagnetic energy. So these are involuntary contractions: much more powerful than the voluntary contractions. These are similar to the ones experienced during real exercise: stomach crunches and squats for the buttocks.
Call 01603 736487 or log on to our website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk to find out more information.
How does this compare to other muscle stimulating machines? This is more powerful than electrical muscle stimulation devices such as TENS machines or micro-current machines. Electrical devices can only stimulate superficial muscle fibres and are painful. Electro-magnetic devices do not require electrodes or needles and stimulate the whole muscles, which are subjected to intense contractions due to the magnetic field. So this is like exercise without exercising and you get more benefit than from intense exercises alone. What happens during the treatment?
You will be lying comfortably on the couch. Treatment applicator/s will email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

used elsewhere in the future.
After a day’s intensive training in establishing the woodlots, the importance of reforestation, and care of the trees, the villagers set to work measuring, digging, planting, then fencing the groves. We supplied the locally made fence panels, and all the tools, with our staff working alongside to encourage and ensure best practice.
2021 continues to be a challenging year for all of us—including those in Malawi.
However, despite the difficulties around the pandemic, we’re still managing to impact lives for the better…...
Hunger has been the predominant issue—from Christmas 2020 to February 2021, we distributed maize, dried soya meals and soap to over 600 households, providing more than 65,000 meals to about 1,100 people. Alongside we provided “food tokens” to 100 families each month till April when the maize crop was harvested.
By May the first leaves were harvested and enjoyed by volunteers and hungry villagers alike. The work continues to care for the trees, monitored by our staff. It’s anticipated that these trees will be producing the protein element of thousands of meals in time for Christmas lunch, providing high grade nutrition free to the most vulnerable, greatly improving the level of health in the community.
With the pandemic in mind, we repaired 9 more borehole pumps to enable the women to safely socially distance when collecting their family’s water. This relieved pressure on over 1,000 families, and a school—about 5,500 people had clean, safe water restored locally. Additionally, we had 200 masks made and distributed them to vulnerable families who struggled to afford their own.
Many thanks for your support….

But a really exciting project this year has been establishing our village “Moringa Groves”. Moringa is an amazing local tree, fast growing, with leaves that contain an impressive range of nutrients, delicious served as a green vegetable or salad. Despite this, in an under-nourished society, it’s scarcely used, mainly because grazing, wandering livestock love it too, stripping the leaves and damaging the trees. So this project trialled protection with sturdy but simple woven bamboo modular fence panels, made with traditional skills from local materials, in “hurdle” style—a totally new concept in this part of Malawi.
The project began back in September, engaging 3 Village Chiefs who received the plan with enthusiasm, donating land, and appointing voluntary committees to work the Groves. Training was given in composting and pits prepared so the contents could “mature”, ready for planting out in January. In the meantime, tree seeds were sown in our Tree Nursery to provide the 100 moringa trees for each grove and 100 glycidia trees too, interplanted for green manure, and forming a “living fence” around the groves so the fencing panels can be removed and

Dedication of the Langham Dome Spitfire. Saturday June 26th, 2021
Chairman of the Friends of Langham Dome, Patrick Allen. Our grateful thanks to Guy and Professor Bland for their time on this special day.
It was with great relief that the day finally arrived to go ahead with our long planned Dedication Day. Our magnificent replica Supermarine Spitfire, which was initially erected last August, was to be dedicated to Richard Younghusband who was tragically killed when his Spitfire crashed at Langham in 1953.
The Spitfire stands in the gardens of Langham Dome Museum, an Anti-Aircraft Gunnery Training Site, built in WW2. The Langham Dome is the only one of its type in the British Isles that is in good repair and open to the public. Therefore, this unique building’s history cannot be experienced anywhere else in Britain. Small building. BIG Story! If you are interested in joining our group of Volunteers please get in touch at admin@langhamdome.org or telephone on 01328 830169. We would be so pleased to meet you.
The unveiling of the newly engraved Memorial Plaque was to be carried out by Guy Martin, famous for his television programmes on all types of vehicles, whether it be planes, motorcycles or automobiles! The day got off to an exciting start when Guy was flown down to Norfolk from Lincolnshire by one of our Trustees, Henry Labouchere, in his wonderful Tiger Moth. After landing nearby they made the journey by road in Henry's little Austen Seven, with Guy at the controls this time, Henry being more than a little alarmed at Guy’s gear crunching! The ceremony which took place on 26th June, had originally been planned for last summer, and looked like being cancelled again when the Government moved the date for Covid restrictions to be lifted to July.

Our Chairman, Patrick Allen first discussed the situation with local MP Duncan Baker, and then the Cabinet Office who, thankfully, gave us permission to go ahead with the ceremony. The blessing on the day was performed by Professor Roger Bland, a lay preacher in the Diocese of Norwich, who was good enough to stand in when the Reverend Ian Whittle was forced to step down at the last minute.
It was a happy occasion, with invited guests arriving to be checked in by Ian Jarvis, one of our long standing Volunteers. The day was hosted by

Stay Safe This Summer
non-powered craft. Launch and recovery area for kitesurfers and windsurfers. Never swim or bodyboard here. • Red flags Danger! Never go in the water under any circumstances when the Red Flag is flying • Orange Windsock Indicates offshore or strong winds. Never use inflatables when the windsock is flying.
Summer holidays are coming, and we are expecting more people than ever to visit our beaches and inland waterways. The RNLI, HM Coastguard and Broads Authority are all working to keep people safe near water. Below you will fine hints to help keep you and your family safe. Please cut this article out and keep it; it may just save you or your family’s lives. On the beach or any body of water Be prepared • Stay close to a friend or family member • Plan for your activity • Find a safe place to go • Be able to swim and float. Stay close to a friend or family member. Always go with someone else when you go into or near water. Friends or family can help in an emergency. The water is powerful: It’s not what you’re used to in a swimming pool. • The water is moving. • The water is colder than you think. • The edge can be dangerous. • There might be dangers under the water. The water is moving water around our coasts and in rivers is always moving. • Rips are strong currents running out to sea that can easily take swimmers out beyond their depth. Know what to do if you get caught in one. • Tides cause a rise and fall in sea level. Check times of high and low tide so you don't get cut off. • Unexpected waves can quickly sweep people off their feet, even on a calm day. Keep an eye on the water and don't go too close to the water’s edge • If you're in trouble in a rip current: If you can stand, walk, don’t swim. If you have a board or inflatable, you should keep hold of it to help you float. Raise your hand and shout for help. Never try and swim against the rip or you'll get exhausted. Swim parallel to the beach until you are free of it then make for shore
Inflatables • Blow-up toys and airbeds are designed for pools, not the sea where they can easily be blown offshore. If you must use them at the beach, then: • ensure children are closely supervised • keep nearby • only use between the red and yellow flags • follow the lifeguards' advice • do not take out in big waves • do not use when the orange windsock is flying, as this indicates offshore wind What to do if a child goes missing •Calmly check the surroundings first, ensuring other children remain supervised. •Contact the lifeguards or police and keep them informed. • Let all searchers know once the child is found For more information go to RNLI Respect The Water, Broads Authority web site for information on the Broads.

Our advice for tidal cut off: • Always check the tide times and heights and keep a look out for incoming tide. Use tide timetables or a tidal prediction app like AnyTide. Make sure you have enough time to return safely. If in doubt, seek local advice. • Always carry a means of calling for help on your person. Call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard if you are in danger or you see someone in danger of being cut off by the tide. • Tell someone else where you’re going and when you’ll be back. They can raise the alarm with the coastguard by calling 999 or 112 if you are overdue BEACH SAFETY Know your flags • Red and Yellow flags Lifeguard areas, safeHeights areas toDevelopments swim, bodyboard and quarter_Layout 1 25/05/2021 10:31 Page 1 New landscape use inflatables • Black and White cheqered flags are for surfboards, stand up paddleboards, kayaks and other

24/7 air ambulance flying started 30 June, becoming first in East of England
Wednesday 30 June was a landmark moment for East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) and the provision of emergency critical care in the region, as the charity starts flying 24/7 for the very first time. The gap between 1:30 am and 7am where there has been no helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) coverage in the region will now be closed, as EAAA becomes the first air ambulance in the East of England to fly 24 hours a day. Becoming a 24/7 service for East Anglia has been a long-term ambition of the charity, with the initial research for expanding to a 24/7 operation taking place four years ago. Since then, EAAA has taken gradual steps towards achieving this ambition, which importantly included raising an extra million pounds a year to fund the additional operating hours, increasing its car cover to 24/7, building a new operational base and now 24/7 flying.
Sheringham cyclist owes life to East Anglian Air Ambulance after collision and takes on 435-mile cycle challenge.
Chris had a suspected head injury and had broken several bones in his body. His injuries were classed as life-threatening and without the enhanced interventions of the air ambulance team, he would not have made it to hospital.
Fortunately, the team were able to stabilise Chris enough to be moved and he was flown to the major trauma centre at Addenbrooke’s for specialist treatment. Chris’ injuries were extensive and included three bleeds on the brain, several spinal fractures, including some damage to his spinal cord, a fractured pelvis, broken left shoulder blade, hip and ankle and several broken ribs on his right side. He has since suffered double vision, slurred speech and had to learn to walk and talk again.
By becoming a 24/7 service by air and by car, EAAA estimates it can be tasked around 600 more times a year, helping hundreds more patients in their hour of need. Last year, the crews were tasked more than 500 times at night by RRV alone, demonstrating the demand that exists overnight.
By flying 24/7 from 30 June, EAAA will now be able to provide the same
level ofMar service by helicopter or by car 24 hours Holt Footcare 21_Layout 1 04/03/2021 15:57 Pagea1day to patients in
Despite these severe injuries, Chris has shown true grit and determination to recover, and this August is planning to cycle 435 miles, known as the Adrian Flux Lap of Anglia, to help raise vital funds for EAAA. Chris was also recently voted EAAA’s Most Inspirational Patient for 2021 for his inspiring recovery and attitude to life.
need like Chris Marshall, who was saved by the charity last year.
Chris said: “I’m still not 100% but I know how close I came to dying and I’m just so, so glad that I didn’t and so grateful to the East Anglian Air Ambulance that they were there to save my life. Having spoken to the team who treated me, there’s no way the ambulance service paramedics would have been able to deliver the enhanced level of care that the air ambulance team did, which saved me, so without them there’s no way I’d be here now to see my kids grow up.
NOW OPEN
“I’ve still got a long way to go but the Lap of Anglia is a really big target of mine – I’ve never done that much back-to-back to cycling before, and on day one we will go past the site of the incident in Cromer, which will be tough, but I’ll be with about 70 other cyclists who are all cycling for the same cause, and that will get me through it. I’ll never cycle on my own ever again though and would urge everyone to be exceptionally careful around cyclists on the road. Just a few seconds can change someone’s life forever.”

Chris Marshall, Chris Marshall, aged 49, is a barber from pic credit Chris Taylor Sheringham and father of two. In May last year Chris was involved in a life-threatening collision with a car near Cromer Golf Club, while he was out training for a 100-mile cycle challenge. When Chris’s wife was first notified about the accident, she was told Chris wasn’t likely to survive.
EAAA has two critical care teams, Anglia One and Anglia Two, which operate from Norwich and Cambridge respectively to take the A and E department to the patient, by air or by car, wherever they may be in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk or Norfolk. The highly skilled doctor and critical care paramedics have been operating 24/7 by rapid response vehicle since March 2020 and now that 24/7 service will be bolstered by a 24/7 helicopter operation, too, for the very first time.

Guided Walks on Holt Lowes
Holt Lowes is an area of heathland, woodland and fen just to the south of Holt Country Park. It has a fascinating history and is internationally recognised for its wonderful wildlife. The Trustees of Holt Lowes are organising a series of guided walks on the Lowes, and this will be a great opportunity to find out more about this very special place and see some of the wildlife. Each walk will last around 90 minutes (weather permitting) and will start at 11 am, meeting at the small car park at Mackey’s Hill (just off the road from Holt to Hempstead and Baconsthorpe, about 100 yards beyond the entrance to the industrial estate, but on the opposite side of the road). There is no need to book, and the walks are free. Please be sure, however, to wear sturdy footwear as some of the paths are rather uneven. Guided Walks will take place on the following dates:

Celebrating 70 Years as a Charity
The Trustees of Weybourne Village Hall celebrated 70 years since the Hall's first Trust Deed was signed.
In June 1951 Fiona Grace Long gifted the 'parcel of land upon which the Hall stands for the purposes of a Charity known as Weybourne Village Hall '. At that time there was a wooden building along the side of Beach Lane which had been used from time to time, but this gift of land meant that fundraising could commence to build a purpose-built Hall. The Hall was built in 1974 on its present site and has been maintained, improved and extended by generations of Trustees since then, and today we have a VIllage Hall that is very well used by a wide range of groups and activities. The photograph shows the current Trustees. From left to right: Susan Mette (Treasurer), Mike Robinson, our longestserving Trustee, Mary Williams (Chair), Roger Ward, Lee Rix (Secretary), Jonathan Lloyd (Vice-Chair) and Pat Dodge. Classical concert honours arts-loving host and theatre president English Chamber Orchestra, Mannington Hall, July 17, 2021
A classical music concert in the grounds of Mannington Hall this summer will be in honour of its arts-loving owner Lord Walpole. The event at the historic stately home on July 17 features the English Chamber Orchestra and is being staged by Sheringham Little Theatre where he was president for nearly 50 years, before his death aged 82 in May. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “We were shocked and saddened by Lord Walpole’s passing. He has been such a stalwart supporter of the theatre and its work in the community for so many years. This concert was already planned, and the family were keen for it to go ahead – so it will a marvellous chance to honour Lord Walpole’s passion for culture and his tireless work to support the arts in Norfolk.” Lord Walpole, The Mannington event will be held in the beautiful setting of the walled garden, in partnership with photo courtesy the Walpole family Orchestras Live and support from North Norfolk District Council and Arts Council. Two hundred people are expected at the concert, with the gardens open from 6pm to enable people to bring and enjoy picnics before the performance begins at 7pm. Blakeney Rowers Have Fun on The Water
Your local rowing club has returned to the water in recent weeks with outings on a wide range of tides and in a variety of weather. Sailors and holiday makers enjoying the Blakeney waters will have been treated to the sight of blue clad rowers propelling a skiff towards the Point or towards Cley. Often, Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket, the club’s distinctive skiffs, have been rowed alongside each other; such outings are always great fun. It has been a particular pleasure to welcome many people who are returning to the sport or who wish to try something new. Look at the club web site on crablakeney.wordpress.com for a record of activities on the water. Notice the smiling faces! The competitive element of the rowing calendar has consisted, so far this summer, of five-mile, timed rows which have all been thoroughly enjoyable. Outings provide opportunities for people to meet, exercise and socialise in beautiful surroundings. A regular sight is of rowers pausing for refreshments on a beach before resuming the row. If you are interested in joining or supporting Blakeney Rowing Club, then phone Captain Humphrey on 07542 371469 for further information. You can have three free rows before deciding whether to become a full member. All types of experience will be welcome. Come along for fun times on the water. Best wishes and stay safe. Barry Howes.

Local MP Champions Our Hedgehogs
Audit Select Committee, I am aware that more needs to still be done, to protect and enhance our domestic ecosystems. However, we’ve highlighted the fact that hedgehogs’ health and their quantity, are one of the best indicators of a healthy micro-environment.
The hedgehog is regularly voted as Britain’s most popular wild mammal. We all love them, but their numbers are under serious threat. The most recent report from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society indicates that there may be as few as 1 million hedgehogs left in the UK today. 1 million might sound like a big number. But actually, it is a decrease of over 50% in the last 20 years.
Whilst the work that the government continues to do is welcome, I want to see this debate really initiate a step-change in the long-term prospects of the hedgehog population. I think that for us to up-end the statistics, there are a few salient issues that should be addressed. I think that the Joint Nature Conservation Committee’s review must strengthen protective legislation for hedgehogs and as we saw in the Environmental Audit Committee’s recent findings on biodiversity in the UK, we have more to do. Enhancing protection for our precious hedgehog is good starting point.
Lockdown has focused our minds and made us re-evaluate our lives. I’m glad, because the environment has taken even more of a centre stage and heightened the understanding of the delicately constructed ecosystems on which our society is built. Perhaps these factors, along with our fondness of them, have caused over 100,000 people to put their names to a petition, calling on Parliament to discuss the protection afforded to hedgehogs.
And let’s not forget that everyone’s contribution is important. The hedgehog is known as the “gardener’s friend” because it eats caterpillars, beetles and other critters. Combined, our gardens provide a space for wildlife larger than all our National Nature Reserves and so by gardening in a wildlife-friendly way we can help our prickly little friends and help protect them in our own backyards.
Hedgehog Haven
Duncan Baker MP
Despite our love of these special creatures, how much do we really understand about them. Perhaps you didn’t know that hedgehogs are one of only three animals to hibernate in the United Kingdom. They are lactose intolerant and prefer that you leave cat or dog food out for them with some water. We all know they only come out at night, but they’re also pretty quick when they want to be and can run over six feet per second! Their dwindling numbers is what is causing many to be concerned. It is alarming and we need to start acting now, to reverse this trend. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society is asking for hedgehogs to be moved from schedule 6 to schedule 5 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 to allow them greater protections. However, the 7th Quinquennial Review of Schedules 5 and 8 of the Act, potentially provides recommendations to DEFRA on major changes to these schedules. This 2021 review seeks to change the ‘Eligibility Criteria’ of the hedgehog, currently listed on schedule 6. It is proposed that the country-based statutory nature conservation bodies will only retain protected status for species that are in imminent danger of extinction in Great Britain.
It's been a very busy time, with a litter of 3 hoglets & a week later a litter of 4 coming in without a mother, with none of the litters having their eyes open they have needed 3 hourly syringe feeding & toileting I'm not getting much sleep! Hand rearing hoglets is very demanding & not always successful as the best thing for a Hoglet is its mother.
Busy Summer! e ne sse A ed nt ll s u ial yo nd ga ur er rd on en e r ing oo f!
This shift in focus will preferentially consider GB Red Listed species, as defined by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The effect of the proposed changes could mean that rather than increasing protection for hedgehogs, their current minor level of protection may be removed.
I know from having visited ‘Hedgehog Haven’, a local organisation in my constituency, committed to the protection of hedgehogs, just how important governmental action is in upholding our collective custodial responsibility, owed to these animals. Experts at the centre outlined their satisfaction with the decision to ban the keeping of hoglets following an amendment to this effect, in the Wildlife and Countryside Act. Having also been working in Parliament, on the Environmental
Hedgehog Facts
Hedgehogs are nocturnal They are called hedgehogs for a reason. The ‘Hedge’ part of their name comes from where they build their nests hedges, bushes and shrubs. The ‘hog’ part comes from the small snorting/ grunting sound they make which is similar to a pig/warthog. The hedgehog was not always called a hedgehog. Before this they were called Urchins which led to the naming of Sea Urchins. Hedgehogs have around 5000 to 7000 spines on their back. These can be raised and lowered to respond to threatening situations. Each quill/ spine lasts about a year before dropping out and being replaced. A group is called an array. It is extremely rare that you will see multiple hedgehogs together in one place other than when mating, but if you do it is called an array. When hedgehogs are out to forage in the evening, they can travel for up to 2 miles, that’s a long way for little legs! email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Solution to No. 291: 1. Qf1, no threat. 1… e1Q+2. Ne6 (h5 now guarded by white Bd1); 1… exf1- 2. Bh5; 1… hxg5 2. Rf6 (g5 now self-blocked); 1… h5 2. Ne6; 1… exd12. Qa6 (set 2. Qe6); 1… R2. Probably difficult for OTB players with the Q sacrifice key, the check permitted to the white K, and the complete absence of any threat. Also the set Q mate on e6 is replaced by a more distant one on a6.

Meet your new lawyer: a robot By Miranda Marshall,
The report, Images of the Future Worlds Facing the Legal Profession 2020-2030, is the first fruit of the Society's Future Worlds 2050 project. The project aims to enable 'raw, frank and honest discussions around what clients will need in the future and to think about the legal business models our members may adopt', the Law Society said.
Director, Hayes + Storr
The French existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre said, ‘Hell is other people’. ("L'enfer, c'est les autres"). So, if you don’t much like your solicitor, help is on its way. Meet your new lawyer: Robert the Robot!
This 'Delphi panel' foresees surviving lawyers working alongside robots. Among the forecasts is a prediction that employment in the UK legal sector is already declining, following a peak in 2016. Not with private client work in north Norfolk, it ain’t.
Clients still want a lawyer they can relate to. The days of clients being amazed that the young woman standing before them was a real solicitor have gone. The old guard are no longer perturbed by their solicitor being from a different culture and religion than them. But are clients yet ready for a robot?
The report also cites research suggesting that 85% of job concepts in 2030 do not yet exist, and half of people think that the roles and skills of the next two decades are impossible to predict within their industry'.
Sure, we will all have an advanced version of Siri who can answer our questions, in much the same way as many of us now turn to google. Doctors are under the same threat, as technology can be better at medical diagnosis than a human.
Apart from advances in technology, the panel considers predictions about the dominance of China in the world economy, climate change and 'rising social movements and resurgence of the civil rights movement'. Law Society president has said: 'The legal profession is at a pivotal moment, as is the world in which we live. There are a plethora of forces shifting our collective experience and the business environment. If we’ve learnt anything from 2020, it’s that the future can still catch you unawares. She reckons that there is likely to be a rise of climate litigation against corporations or governments.
This Brave New World, dystopian vision of the future was described in the leading article in today’s (online!) Law Society Gazette. Just as I was pondering the subject matter of this month’s article, this popped into my inbox.
This bleak vision of a legal profession largely replaced by artificial intelligence (A.I.) and self-service legal advice has been published by a Law Society-sponsored initiative. The report, based on projections by a 'Delphi panel' of experts, forecasts a 'savage reduction' in full-time jobs by 2050. That’s okay, I’ll be 86 by then.
There is something to be said for working in the more people-centred section of the legal world. It is comforting to know that my 6 years of training and thirty years of post-qualification experience in the world of private client work makes me less likely to be replaced by a robot.
Those human lawyers who remain, will work alongside technology, and be required to take 'performance-enhancing medication in order to optimise their own productivity and effectiveness'. There have already been quips in the online responses about ‘litigator-strength coffee’. I hear that in high-octane spheres of the legal profession ‘performance-enhancing substances’ have long been as prevalent as in show-business.
This article is for general information only and does not constitute legal or professional advice. Please note that the law may have changed since this article was published.
