News from the Venue

A Note from the Editor

It’s been a vibrant and busy February at the Venue, with a fantastic Feel-Good Film Festival playing 10 uplifting films to lift us out of the gloom of endless storms and grey days.

It’s okay, you can come out of hibernation now. The sun is putting in the odd appearance, the temperature is rising, and shoots are starting to break through in the garden. Spring is nearly here! I don’t know about you, but I always feel better as the days lengthen and everything seems to be waking up and getting going. Speaking of which, remember the clocks go forward on 27th March, those lighter evenings are a sign that summer is not that far away. The 27th is also Mother’s Day so don’t forget the card and some flowers, maybe an afternoon out or Sunday lunch and don’t leave her with the washing up for a change. Whatever you are up to, enjoy your March magazine. Keep safe and well.

As always, these events involve an enormous amount of organisation and work by volunteers, so our grateful thanks to Susan Williams and her amazing team of ushers, The Community Café volunteers for their fabulous baking and catering operation over the weekend and of course the Film Festival Committee for their skill and graft over what was a very enjoyable and full weekend. Our huge thanks also to Lady Anwen Hurt for sharing with us a wealth of incredible memorabilia at her exhibition, ‘Sir John Hurt: A Life in Film’ which was a wonderful and very special addition to the festival. Thanks also to James Glennie for allowing us the use of cabinets and other furniture for the exhibition, which dressed the Gallery beautifully, and made for an impressive start of the newly launched ‘Anwen and John Hurt Exhibition Space’.

Half of Omicron Grants Now Paid Out to North Norfolk Businesses

North Norfolk District Council have now paid nearly half of the Omicron Hospitality & Leisure Grant (OHLG) to all eligible business in North Norfolk

The OHLG was set up in early January to help businesses operating in the Hospitality, Leisure and Accommodation industries affected through the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, with each eligible business able to claim up to £6,000. North Norfolk was allocated over £8m, the largest for any authority in Norfolk, to support over 3,000 businesses in the sector, who continue to be affected by the economic impacts of COVID. NNDC’s award winning Grants Team have now paid out £4.2m to 1,474 North Norfolk businesses – 52.3% of the Government allocation to 43.3% of eligible businesses in the district. It is expected the Council will award grants over the total allocation of £8m, which will be funded by central Government, allowing the economic relief for more eligible businesses without the restriction. As of 30 January, NNDC led national figures for paying out the most business grants in the whole country and ranked third for the total amount paid out, just behind Manchester City Council and City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council.

Nearly 1,600 eligible businesses are still yet to apply for the grant, which has a cut-off date of Friday 18 March 2022, after which applications cannot be accepted. Payments will be made by 31st March, following the relevant fraud checks. Reminder emails have been sent to businesses encouraging them to apply. If your business is not eligible for the OHLG, it may still be eligible for the Omicron Hospitality & Leisure Additional Restrictions Grant (OHLARG)

Cllr. Richard Kershaw, portfolio holder for Sustainable Growth said: “The NNDC award-winning grants team have now paid out over 50% of grants to 43% of businesses in North Norfolk. You are entitled to up to £6,000 per business to cover the effects of Omicron. Please do not let this opportunity slip”

The Grants team are award winning, and comprise of officers from Revenues, Finance, IT, Economic Development, Communications and Customer Services. NNDC was recognised for this, having been awarded at the 2021 Public Finance Awards and a high commendation at the IRRV Excellence in Innovation.

We look forward to bringing many more interesting and diverse exhibitions to the town for all to enjoy, and we hope that many people will take advantage of this impressive and affordable exhibition space to showcase and sell their work. Our aim is to enable artists to have a competitively priced space in which to promote themselves, but also to encourage the community to engage in collaborative art projects and connect with the arts in new ways. To that end, we have a small group of artists bringing together a community art project for the Jubilee which we need donations of wool and material for, so please do have a sort out and let us have any extra materials which you may have lying around. There will be more information regarding this project coming in the next issue, but if you are part of a group that you think may be interested in joining in on a commemorative textile Jubilee project, please do get in touch with me at the Venue. Our special events continue apace with fantastic musicians providing a wide range of jazz music on the first Wednesday every month, amazing Art Forums and interviews with Phil Barrett, regular Bingo evenings, monthly Royal Opera House Special Screenings of Opera and Ballet, Tea Dances on Sundays once a month and Wrestling featuring this month too; things are certainly getting busier!

It is necessary for us to have the professional infrastructure to be able to run these events, so the improvements to our equipment within the Venue continues, with further improvements being made this month by local company Emotive to our sound and light capabilities in the hall. We are also putting out an appeal this Spring for people to join a new Holt Community Theatre Group to be based at the Venue, to put on live Theatre Shows on our new stage. If you would like to be part of this exciting new group, please get in touch; it is open to all, no matter your age, experience or ability. Don’t forget you can get more info about what’s on from our website, www.thevenueholt.com. Carolyn Burn, Chairperson

Holt and District Probus Club

Our Norfolk Landscape.

John Hurst’s annual watercolour exhibition of Norfolk landscapes and the memoir, Watercolour Words. Fifty Years is taking place at NWT Cley Marshes Visitors’ Centre until 26th April 10am-5.00pm daily. This also includes Changing Landscapes a multi-media performance lead by Home-Stage, the online charity that showcases creative talent to include poetry, folk music and the arts.

20 Members of Holt and District Probus Club were very happy to meet again at The Feathers in Holt on Thursday, 3rd February for a delightful meal and a lot of splendid, good company! Arrangements had been made for the club to have lunch in the Conservatory – where there are plenty of windows that were left open to allow for lots of fresh, virus-free air to circulate. The meal – that was as usual a cracker: soup then beef and onion pie and then a roulade. One of the club’s members, David Wyeth, then gave an illustrated talk about the London Underground. David worked with the Underground for 42 years stating as a trainee guard, moving on until he was in a senior administrative position. From the beginning of the Underground in the 19th century through to the construction of Crossrail (soon to be opened) David related how the system and its running stock developed. Chairman for the day was Alan Taylor (John Mangan having covid) and Alan thanked David Wyeth for an interesting and lively talk. Holt and District Probus Club normally meets at The Feathers for lunch on the first Thursday each month. But March 2022 will have to be missed as The Feathers will be undergoing refurbishment. Anyone interested in considering membership should contact the Hon. Treasurer Ray Morgan at ray_morgan@icloud.com or via the club website at holtprobusclub.wordpress.com Robin Johnson

email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

The paintings featured in the exhibition are all recent works, depicting the expansive wilds of Norfolk. John will be available each weekend and also by appointment to discuss his work, with a generous proportion of sales being dedicated to the work of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.

John is joined by award winning poet, James Knox Whittet and singer, Anna McCrae, who together present an environmentally based performance of watercolour images, stories, songs and poems. The performance takes place at 3.00pm on Sunday 10th April. Tickets are limited to this free event where there will be a retiring collection for Sir Norman Lamb’s Foundation.

The Holt Chronicle March 2022

Dear Readers,

County Councillor News

from County Councillor Eric Vardy

This month’s report is diverse to say the least. As someone who has suffered the impact of Covid, I can only implore you to continue to be as vigilant and careful as possible. We will all have to learn to live with Covid is the simple message.

Norfolk and Waveney COVID-19 booster and vaccinations Vaccinations for all healthy 5–11year-olds to launch from April 2022 Following a government announcement, which confirmed that all healthy 5– 11-year-olds will soon be eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination, health leaders are asking that parents and carers be patient and do not contact the NHS to request a vaccine. The guidance indicates that healthy children will be eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination sometime in April 2022. At the moment, the Norfolk and Waveney health and care system is continuing to vaccinate clinically extremely vulnerable 5 to 11-year-olds and will continue to do so in the weeks ahead.

Norfolk County Council Budget Budget to “build back better” agreed. The 2022-23 budget proposes significant investment, while addressing continuing severe pressure on services. Plans for a balanced budget and a 2.99 per cent Council Tax rise were agreed by Norfolk County Council. The full council agreed: A 2.99 per cent rise in the county council’s share of Council Tax, in April – not the maximum permissible 3.99 per cent. To give a little perspective on this a Band D dwelling will be paying less than a £1 per week extra.

An increase in the 2022/23 net budget by £25 million compared to this year, to £464.123m A review of the Council and how it operates, to bridge a £60m budget gap predicted for 2023/24

New roles created to improve the link between county and local councils A significant investment has been made into the relationship between Norfolk County Council and the rest of the county with £160,000 committed over the next 2 years.

Coastal Art Group

Members of the Coastal Art Group, who meet on Friday mornings at Weybourne Village Hall saw their contribution to Bakers and Larners ‘What makes Holt special to you?’ installed, along with other contributions, on the hoardings surrounding the site of the new Budgens store, today.

Back in October last year, we were thrilled to be asked, along with other art groups, artists and schools if we would like to help brighten up the hoardings surrounding the building site for the Budgens rebuild. Armed with books, postcards and numerous photographs members of the group took up the challenge and worked together over the next couple of months to produce a colourful and fun contribution which responded to the brief - “So many aspects of Holt and our local surroundings are special, which is why North Norfolk attracts so many visitors. Along with the beautiful countryside, stunning coastline and charming villages and towns, the wonderful Poppy Line Steam Railway, which links Sheringham to Weybourne and onwards to Holt provides a wonderful opportunity to experience either new or nostalgic memories for it's passengers, with but a short walk into the delightful Georgian town of Holt for refreshments and shopping. We are very fortunate indeed, to live here." Little did we know that the whole experience of working together on such a large project would be such fun. To now see it up, it seems almost impossible to imagine the number of ‘person hours’ it took to complete. The Coastal Art Group greatly appreciate the opportunity given to them by Bakers and Larners and hope local people and visitors enjoy ours, along with all the other wonderful contributions. email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

The county council have funded the Norfolk Association of Local Councils (Norfolk ALC) to employ two members of staff who will be dedicated to improving the link between the county council and Norfolk’s town and parish councils. The new roles will help local councils stay up to date on key initiatives and policies that affect them, while ensuring that local voices are heard at a county level. They will also work to raise the profile of Parish Councils across Norfolk and the work they do for their communities. The funding will also aim to help local councils build their skills and get access to the right information. That might include help with developing a parish plan, writing a funding bid or reaching a wider demographic in their area. This help will be in addition to the support the Norfolk ALC already provides which has seen a range of initiatives co-ordinating the Parish and Town Councils in Norfolk. Anyone interested in knowing more about the support available via the Norfolk Association of Local Councils can visit their website which holds information, advice and training on a wide range of subjects.

Hundreds of free activities available for children and young people this Easter Bookings are now open for The Big Norfolk Holiday Fun, a programme of free activities that will run over the Easter holidays for 5–16-year-olds across Norfolk. The scheme is provided as part of the government’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme and is being delivered by Norfolk County Council in partnership with Active Norfolk. There will be a range of activities available all over the county, aimed at various ages. These could include football, basketball, circus skills, arts and crafts, dance, music, cookery, filmmaking and much more. The sessions offer children the chance to learn and develop new skills, alongside receiving a free healthy lunch each day. Booking is on a first-come-first-served basis, with limited spaces for many activities, so families should book soon to avoid disappointment. Those who claim means-tested free school meals can claim free spaces on the activities, whilst paid spots are available on many activities for those who don’t.

Duncan Baker February News

What links all of this together is a very special quality that people in the East of England have. I believe we have more creative minds; more people willing to take risks; and more innovators in this part of the country than almost anywhere else.

I recently heard someone talking about ‘levelling up the North’. I had to correct them: the government’s intention is to level up the whole country. What does levelling up mean for us here in the East of England, and in North Norfolk?

Well, it’s about recognising that the East is already an enormous success – we are one of only three UK regions to be ‘net contributors’ to the economy, ie. we produce more than the state invests in us. With more investment, we could sell the many things we’re good at doing, and producing, much more widely, providing more growth, more jobs, and more prosperity. Look at what we have. We have a world-renowned centre of training and excellence in medicine at the University of East Anglia, plus the Norwich Biomedical Research Centre. We have opportunities for carers, nurses, doctors, and dentists to work in one of the most beautiful parts of the country.

So how do we harness what we have and make it even better? This is where the investment that levelling up will provide is so important. We know that we need better roads and public transport. We need homes that truly are ‘affordable’, so that our brightest minds can afford to live and work here, rather than leaving the area and going elsewhere. We need more investment in education and training – such as the highly successful apprenticeships and Restart schemes.

Now that the threat of Covid is beginning to recede and we can begin to look once again towards the future, my job – and that of all the East Anglian MPs – will be to remind everyone that levelling up isn’t just a Northern thing. We will expect – and demand – that the East of England and North Norfolk receive their fair share too. We’ve already seen that begin to happen with the huge government investment in North Walsham, and I will continue to advocate for the whole of North Norfolk to benefit in a similar way.

1/3rd of the UK’s gas comes through Bacton, with countless new opportunities for jobs and research in new carbon net-zero technologies. The visitor economy of the East of England generates over £10bn a year. We have start-up and established companies producing everything from space rockets to filming locations and studio facilities for Netflix and Amazon.

Small Furries at Age Concern North Norfolk

Half of our support workers have completed Level 2 training in Dementia and our centre is a great resource for people living with dementia and their carers.

Caring for small animals is usually a childhood experience that we look back on with wonder and love. We had the visit of six beautifully- coloured female guinea pigs from Cavies and Cakes of Fakenham. All of our female clients fully embraced the opportunity to cuddle and feed them – our gentlemen were a little more reticent however!

Places are available Tuesday to Friday – phone 01263 821188 to book a Half Price Taster Day.

Do you have a heart for older people? Are you energetic? Innovative? Forward looking? If this is you read on ...

Guinea pigs live for around 6 years and can produce 2-5 young – all born with full coats and eyes open. Guinea pigs graze constantly so our ladies had a lovely time feeding them with bits of carrot and lettuce.

Innovative Norfolk Charity Age Concern North Norfolk (ACNN) supporting older people to live enhanced lives in their own homes, is looking for 2 energetic TRUSTEES to initially serve for one year following a 3 month probationary period. Would you like to gain experience of what is involved in overseeing and running a small charity? Give something back to your community? Enhance your job prospects?

Cavies and Cakes have a café where the guinea pigs are on show in their cages so perhaps we will arrange an outing in the warmer weather to see them and enjoy a cream cake or two ourselves!

We are interested in hearing from you if you are a recent graduate with interest in this field, or if you are later on in your career, wanting a change or a challenge or both, and willing to volunteer in a small, friendly, private charity. You will gain valuable experience and make an untold difference in the lives of vulnerable people. Retirees with energy and time to spare are also welcome.

We are always looking for ways to stimulate the senses of people coming to the centre and visits such as this bring out their caring skills, memories of childhood or having pets for their own children and helping with relaxation. This is especially important for people who are sometimes more agitated in the afternoon and we have evidence that this type of activity calms people and takes their minds off themselves.

www.holtchronicle.co.uk

Contact Alison on 01263 821188 or alisonc@ageconcernnorthnorfolk.co.uk to ask for an application form.

Commitment is 6-8 hours a month, which includes a 2 hour trustee meeting 10 times a year. Nominal £30 admin fee refundable at end of successful probationary period. Interviews will be held at the end of March 2022. We look forward to meeting you!

Employment Law: Settlement Agreements

A settlement agreement (previously known as a comprise agreement) is a legally binding, voluntary contract between an employer and employee. The contract provides that an employee agrees not to pursue any claims against the employer in a tribunal or court in exchange for the payment of a severance sum to the employee. A settlement agreement may be appropriate where the employment relationship is continuing, but it is most common for these agreements to be entered into where the employment has terminated (or is about to do so). Since many businesses have faced financial difficulties during the pandemic, it’s likely that the use of settlement agreements will be favoured by employers. This will give employers peace of mind as it will remove any risks of employment-related claims being brought by employees and will firmly draw a line under the employment relationship. What should you do if your employer offers you a settlement agreement?

A settlement agreement will not be valid unless the employee has received independent legal advice on the terms and effect of the settlement agreement and in particular its effect on their ability to bring a tribunal claim under the relevant legislation.

As an employee will be waiving their right to pursue any claims, the adviser will consider whether the employee has any claims and will advise on the prospects of success of those claims, along with the potential compensation a successful claim would attract. Under most circumstances, the employer usually contributes towards the cost of receiving that advice.

support in negotiations when needed.

Settlement Agreements for Employers

As an employer, there are a number of legal obligations to be considered when offering an employee a settlement agreement. We can assist Nicola Strefford with preparing the settlement agreement, advise on each stage of consultations and draw up the final settlement agreement. Our employment team are highly experienced in advising employers on settlement agreements, ensuring your business is protected and you fully comply with your legal obligations.

Whilst the adviser is not required to consider whether the employee is getting a “good deal”, this is certainly something that can be discussed. If the employee wishes to negotiate for an increase in the compensation payment, this is something the adviser can undertake on their behalf.

Dear friends, I write this brief reflection as war rages in Ukraine aware that by the time you read it the situation may have changed dramatically. My only hope and prayer is that the conflict will have ceased and some form of peace, no matter how fragile will have been established. The horrific atrocities of Russia’s invasion into Ukraine have been called a “grave act of evil” by our Archbishop’s of York and Canterbury. Surely, we must agree. War, conflict, the shedding of blood and the destruction of life is not of God. It is not what God wills for the people of the earth. His will is for peace not war. But like any conflict in the world, the conflict in Ukraine has demonstrated the fragility of the peace we have enjoyed and perhaps even taken for granted in Europe. It has revealed how easily the whole of Europe could be drawn into war. In his teaching, Jesus said; “Blessed are the peace makers, for they shall be called the children of God" The word used for peace “shalom” as the archbishop’s have rightly pointed out means more than just the absence of war. In Hebrew, peace means everything which makes for a person’s highest good and is bound up with ideals of righteousness and justice. Peace, in order to be established and maintained is something that has to be desired, longed for and worked at. It cannot be taken for granted nor kept by force, rather achieved by common understanding and the conversion of hearts and minds. In the shadow of the darkness that has gripped Ukraine it is difficult to know how to respond, yet we seek to respond with prayer and compassion; praying that world may choose peace over hatred and by extending a hand of friendship to those in need. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the people of the Ukraine and for all who involved in making decisions that affect the lives of millions of people. Pray for peace.

Fr. Howard

A Prayer for Peace O God, lead us from death to life, from falsehood to truth. Lead us from despair to hope, from fear to trust. Lead us from hate to love, from war to peace. Let peace fill our hearts, our world, our universe. Amen. From Holt Consulting Rooms Finding Hope in 2022

Having hope transforms our lives. It gives us the belief that things can change for the better. However, it may often seem that the scale of problems in the world, and in our own life, is so immense that it's impossible to do anything about it.

A good approach is to focus on small manageable actions in our own life and our community that do make a positive difference. Good examples are: resolving family problems, renewing friendships, learning new skills, improving our own fitness or lifestyle, volunteering for a charity, or helping a neighbour. Finding and following through with these small do-able goals can create a positive ripple in our own life, and in those close to us. This stimulates us to feel happier, and more hopeful.

A large number of studies have found that one of the most important factors for longevity is an optimistic attitude – in fact a Harvard University study in 2019 revealed that optimists tend to live 15% longer than pessimists, with a greater quality of life. However, it's important to have practical ways to develop this positive mindset. “A goal without a plan is just a wish”. It's useful to have SMART goals: • Specific, clear, well defined • Measurable, assessing progress, achieving steps on the way • Achievable, something that is stretching but practically and financially possible • Relevant, your own goal, worthwhile • Time-bound, deadlines and dates for stages of progress And every time you hit one of your targets, celebrate and use that boost to motivate you to progress to the next step.

“Absolutely faultless from start to finish” - Mrs JN

Please give us a call to discuss how we can get you moving 11 Station Road Sheringham NR26 8RE

An approach like Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy can really help you to get clearer about your life and your values, enable you to be calmer and more focused, and encourage a confident and determined mindset, so that you find it easier to achieve your goals, and your life is happier and more fulfilling.

Pan Fried Sausage, Mushroom and Bacon in Cider

I’m always looking for quick, one pot or pan recipes. Little effort, maximum taste, and here is one that always pleases. It works with veggie sausages and if you are not partial to alcohol, apple juice will be a good substitute. If you want to add extra veggies or your own mix of spices or herbs give it a go, sage always goes well with pork and apples. The recipe serves 4 but easily doubles, serve with a creamy mash and a little wholegrain mustard.

Ingredients

8 plump pork sausages (or veggie sausages) Oil for frying 2 medium onions, finely sliced 3-4 rashers of back bacon cut into strips

6oz chestnut mushrooms, sliced 1 heaped teaspoon of plain flour ½ pint (300ml) of chicken or veggie stock and cider or apple juice (½ and ½ of whatever you are using) 1 bay leaf (optional) or 1 teaspoon dried sage Seasoning to taste Method

Fry the sausages in a large frying pan until golden (about 15 – 20 mins. Set them aside and drain some of the oil from the pan. Add the onions and the bacon and fry for 5 mins. Sprinkle over the flour and mix well and cook for a further 2 mins whilst stirring. Pour over the stock/cider mix and bring to the boil. Add the bay leaf/sage and the sausages, check for seasoning, bring to a simmer, cover, and cook for 20 mins, add the mushrooms for the last 10 minutes of cooking. Serve and enjoy!

Berry Delicious!

There really is nothing more comforting and delicious than a home baked cake. We serve them up regularly at the Community Café and I am always surprised and delighted by the reaction of people who clearly haven’t had a home baked cake for a while! This is a new variation on my traybake recipe, using fresh fruit for a change and with the addition of some interesting texture from the coconut. I like to bake this in a loaf tin as it makes it easier to slice, and it is an easy all in one cake to make – no difficult steps here! We road tested this at the Film Festival, and it was very popular, so it will be a regular feature now in our repertoire. Blueberry, Coconut and Almond Cake

Ingredients 8 oz self-raising flour, sifted 6 oz caster sugar 6 oz butter/marg (I use Clover) 2.5 oz desiccated coconut 3 eggs 3 tblsp milk 2 tsp almond essence 1 small punnet fresh blueberries

Method Place all ingredients in a large bowl and beat together until smooth. Carefully stir in the blueberries and pour into a greased and lined 2lb loaf tin. Place in a preheated oven on 180° degrees for 40 mins, or until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Turn out onto a wire cooling rack and serve once cold. Will keep for 4 days in an airtight tin. Carolyn Burn

Pepper and Honey

Kettlestone Village Hall. Creative Arts East Live event 11th March. Doors open at 7.00 for 7.30 start. Tickets: Social Club members £10.00, children £5.00, non-members £12.50. Pepper and Honey is a play for our times: So, what's "home"? That's the question Ana, a young Croatian woman, poses as she settles in the UK. Ana has been on a journey. Croatian born, she’s arrived in the UK, determined to make it home. As she focuses on life in this new land, she is haunted by the voice of her grandma - calling for her to stay true to national identity and yearning for Ana to come home. As Grandma bakes her traditional Croatian pepper biscuits (believed to bring a loved one back home), will this be enough to be reunited with her granddaughter? But what is "home" to Ana now?

Mother’s Day Facts

Mother’s Day dates back to Ancient Greece when Greeks used to hold an annual spring festival dedicated to the maternal Goddess Rhea, mother of the Gods. Davy Crockett - A Bear’s Worst Friend. By David Abbott.

Crockett:”Hi, Mr Bear.” Bear: “Hello Funny Hat Man”. Crockett:”I could do with a new fur coat.” Bear:”Come on then if you think you’re hard enough.” Crockett: You got big claws. Me got big gun.” BANG.

Davy Crockett “killed him a bear when he was only three” according to the song. He never did. Nor did he ever claim to have done so. But the very suggestion was not taken kindly by the big grizzly fraternity. They felt humans and Walt Disney in particular were taking liberties.

Crockett was often in the news. In 1835 he helped save America’s seventh President, Andrew Jackson’s life after a gunman tried to assassinate him. Crockett wrestled him to the ground and disarmed the man.

You don’t mess with these bears: 800 lbs of fur, fat and muscle. They can give you nasty stare - and if you’re unlucky you become lunch.

During his life he didn’t always make good career moves - especially his last when he sided with the Republicans, working mainly as a tracker.

Born in Tennessee Crockett had a colourful life as a politician, soldier, frontiersman, huntsman and tracker. Hard to know how he found time for it all.

Crockett’s life came to an end in a famous finale: the Battle of the Alamo. In March 1836 Mexican troops breached the Alamo defences and killed all 200 defenders, Crockett included. Some say he was the last man standing. If true that would have been a fitting way for him to have bowed out.

Having left school and home at 13 he set out on his chequered career. Crockett tried his hand at everything from farming to manufacturing wood barrels and gunpowder, but his forte was as a pro-fessional hunter.

Crockett ’s fame lived on long after his death. One hundred and eighteen years later a Walt Disney film and song by one Fess Parker made it fashionable for kids at the time to wear an animal on their heads. Every day 5,000 coonskin hats were being sold. Have you still got yours?!

He spent much of his life stalking grizzlies in the Tennessee woods, selling their pelts, meat and oil for profit. He claimed to have bagged 105 in seven months during the winter of 1825-26. Which didn’t exactly endear him to the local bear community (or what was left of it). Crockett’s fondness for hunting dangerous game and the tales he spun about it played a major part in making him a frontier legend. According to one yarn, he killed a bear in a hand to paw fight, stab-bing it in the heart with a butcher’s knife. The bear may have begged to differ. In fact, he shot them all.

Post-script.

Some young Californian black bears have apparently started behaving strangely - ap-proaching humans in a non-aggressive and even friendly manner. One young female walked into a school classroom and sat down with the children. Another tried to get onto a snowboard along with its user. A brain infection has been suggested as the cause. Would such behaviour have have endeared them to Crockett? Probably not. Most likely he’d have shot them anyway. That’s what he did!

Dressed in buckskin jacket and trousers he looked the part. But the coonskin hat didn’t do him any favours. Children asked why he was wearing a squirrel on his head. Still in the end it didn’t do his image any harm and he became known as “King of the Wild Frontier”.

The Ladies Tractor Road Run Needs Your Stories

“So please send me your story, a paragraph, a page or a chapter! By Easter, if possible please. I’m very much looking forward to hearing from you.” To send in your recollections of the event and why you take part, including any photos of your experiences please email them to pinktractorannie@gmail.com or send to Boundary Farm, Garlic Street, Pulham St. Mary, Diss, IP21 4RL. For more information about the event please visit www.ladiestractorroadrun.co.uk

The Pink Ladies’ Tractor Road Run has eyes on a new challenge – to produce a book charting the rise of the iconic event and the stories behind the women who take part. The first Pink Ladies Tractor Run set off in 2004 and to date the event has raised a staggering £812,000 for Cancer Research UK’s breast cancer appeal. Organised by Annie Chapman BEM, the run Pink Ladies’ Tractor Road Run organiser Annie Chapman. annually sees more than 100 decorated ©Jonathan Slack tractors winding their way through Norfolk and north Suffolk. Each year money is raised by the ladies who take part in the event, money collected on the day from the thousands of supporters who gather along the route and donations and fundraising activities following the run. Now the event is looking to produce a book to share the stories of the people who make it happen – the tractor drivers, marshals, sponsors, supporters and countless others. Organiser Annie Chapman said: “It’s about more than just money. We have always said and believed that. Behind every Pink Lady is a story. It may have everything to do with breast cancer or nothing at all, but whatever the motives, they have been strong enough to create a unique, emotional, special and enduring phenomenon. “Over the last 18 years I have had the privilege of knowing those Pink Ladies who have suffered breast cancer. Many have survived, some have not. Their stories will always be with me. “But there are stories I don’t know, and I hope that by bringing them together in a book, we can capture and share with others the indefinable magic of the Ladies’ Tractor Road Run. I am looking for the fun, the friendship, the crazy as well as the serious. “The book, like the run, cannot happen without you so I am asking you to contribute your story. Why have you taken part? How big was the challenge? What has it meant to you, your family and your friends? “We would also welcome contributions from anyone who has helped, sponsored or supported this run in any way whatsoever! Relevant photographs would also be appreciated.

Sharrington Live Music

Live music evenings at Sharrington Village Hall have proved very popular and we have now moved all events to Saturday evenings. We will be welcoming a very wide and varied range of musical acts to the hall over the course of this year. You can find full details under Live Music on Sharrington’s website: www.sharrington.org.uk or on our Sharrington Live Music Facebook page. We were due to welcome The Strawbs on Saturday April 30th, but Dave Cousins has sadly had to cancel all his gigs this year Their place has been taken by the extremely talented and versatile singer/songwriter, Ken Nicol, a long-time member of Steeleye Span and who has also been a member of The Albion Band and Magna Carta. He's regarded by many as one of the best guitarists in this country and is a brilliant entertainer who has also appeared on Al Stewart albums and many more. He'll be accompanied by Wendy Ross on electric violin. Wendy has also played with a wide variety of well-known acts. Full details of the gig along with how to purchase tickets, which are £15, appear on our above-mentioned website. Besides concerts, where we welcome performers from across the country, the hall also provides a stage for quality Norfolk musicians. Our first music evening after this concert will be on Saturday 26th March when we welcome the well-known North Norfolk band, The Fried Pirates. This versatile group offers a wide variety of uplifting music and play a variety of instruments. It should be a fantastic evening. Tickets are only £5 each and are limited to 60. If you would like to purchase one, or indeed be added to our mailing list to get the first chance of purchasing tickets, please contact Chris at sharringtonvh@gmail.com We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful, recently renovated hall. Laser therapy helping pets at Toll Barn Vets

At Toll Barn Vets we believe in constantly providing the highest standard of care for our patients by utilising cutting edge technology to reduce reliance on medication. This is particularly beneficial for chronic conditions and significantly improves our pets’ quality of life.

As part of this commitment we offer our patients Laser Therapy which reduces inflammation and provides pain relief. It is effective at treating acute and chronic pain as well as improving wound healing. It is most frequently performed in contact with the area being treated, however, for nervous patients it can be used without contact with the body and can also be applied to acupuncture points to achieve similar responses to traditional acupuncture without requiring application of needles. Laser therapy is safe, painless and fast with most sessions taking 5-10 minutes per area of treatment and most patients show significant improvement after 3-5 treatment sessions. Laser therapy stimulates the body’s own healing powers by stimulating cellular activity which reduces inflammation, provides pain relief, stimulates nerve regeneration and improves tissue repair often leading to a reduction in requirement for medication and reduced healing times. Laser therapy often forms part of the treatment for osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease (eg hip and elbow dysplasia), intervertebral disc disease (spinal pain), skin disease, post operative wound healing, sprains and strains, treatment of orthopaedic disease (eg cruciate ligament rupture) and periodontal disease. We are one of the few centres within East Anglia to have a Laser suitable to perform these treatments and are happy to discuss the suitability of laser therapy as part of your pets care. I hide photos on my computer of me petting animals at the zoo in a file named Fireworks and vacuums so my dog won’t find them.

best part was engaging with so many people who were interested in art. As well as making sales, I had the opportunity to promote my teaching workshops and I ran one of these as a Norfolk Open Studios event. Taking part in Norfolk Open Studios was an enjoyable and rewarding experience which provided a new audience for my art and benefitted my career.”

Applications are now open for makers and creators from across Norfolk to take part in Norfolk Open Studios. The scheme annually sees hundreds of artists opening their studios to the public to share their creative processes – and for the second year running the event will take place in early autumn. Now, artists are invited to apply to take part in the 2022 event which will take place between 24 September and 9 October.

Norfolk Open Studios welcomes applications from all artists, groups of artists and schools – people wishing to take part can apply online or download an application form from the scheme’s website. Artists taking part will receive a profile and artwork image in the NOS brochure, a website listing (which remains published on the website for up to a year), as well as posters and postcards to publicise their involvement. They will have the opportunity to take part in the Preview exhibition at The Forum in Norwich, one of the largest annual art exhibitions held at the venue.

Artists at all stages of their careers are invited to take part, from school and college students through to emerging artists, groups, established and professional creators and makers. As well as opening their studios many artists get together to host art trails, events and demonstrations. Ros Dixon, Norfolk Open Studios Administrator, said: “Norfolk Open Studios is excited to be launching its call out to artists, as it marks the start of the build-up to this year’s event in the autumn. We’re looking forward to artists and schools from across the county getting involved, with the scheme continuing to be a wonderful way for artists to connect with the public as well as fellow artists. It’s also the second time the event is to be held in the autumn, which is a magical time of year to be inviting visitors to be out and about discovering Norfolk’s artistic community.”

Applications opened on Monday 28 February and close on Friday 8 April 2022. For more information or to apply visit www.openstudios.org.uk or email openstudios@nnfestival.org.uk or call 01603 877762.

The free event annually attracts thousands of visitors who travel throughout Norfolk to meet our county’s artists. Last year more than 320 artists took part across 237 studios and schools. For visitors it’s a chance to see makers and creators at work in their studios, garages, spare rooms, garden rooms, community spaces and schools, getting an insight into how and where they work – and maybe having a go at getting creative themselves.

The scheme is open to all artists from painters, sculptors, weavers and furniture makers to jewellery makers, wood workers, ceramicists, textile artists and anyone practising their craft throughout the county. Painter Sara Edwards said: “Last year was my first open studio and I sold many paintings, prints and cards and took several commissions, but the email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

It is hoped, subject to permissions being granted that the slates ;ϲ͛ dž Ϯ͛Ϳ, will be located in Fish Hill where it is safe to view them. The slates need to be ready for unveiling by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk, The lady Dannatt MBE over the Jubilee weekend, in June. So, we have to work quickly to raise the funds! The Society has already raised sufficient to purchase the slates, so it now needs to raise circa £10,000 to complete the project before the carving can commence.

What’s On

Dear Jo, At one time, the Chronicle featured a wonderful “What’s On” page, packed with details of the many activities taking place in Holt and surrounding area. Each month, when the latest edition popped through the letter box, our immediate action was to open the what’s-on page and our diaries to plan the following month. Not now. Instead, we regularly hear the cry “we never knew that was on!” The page with its complete listing of events day by day was so useful to both provider and receiver. Is there any possibility of reviving it please? Barry Pilgrim

Editor’s reply. We haven't scrapped the 'What's on' column, in fact if you look on the Billboard page there is a box with regular and upcoming events. Elsewhere in the magazine we have notices of events. We are simply not getting the volume of groups and events which we had pre-pandemic. As soon as that volume builds up, we will reinstate the column as before.

Local Author has new book: Told at Dusk, Remembered at Dawn

Award winning author of novels, short stories, scripts for screen and stage Laurence Staig has just had a new collection of short stories published: “Told at Dusk, Remembered at Dawn.” Best known as a writer of thrillers, mystery and horror this new collection contains 16 uncollected stories and a novella “The Darkness at Taskerlands.”

It is his first new book since his Supernatural Thriller “The Companion” was published a few years ago, when he lived near Bury St Edmunds. Since then, he has moved to a house in Overstrand, thus becoming another local artist who lives in Poppyland.

Feel Good Film Festival

As co-founders of Screen-next-the-Sea, David I and are long-time film buffs, so we had looked forward to the “Feel Good Film Festival” last month in Holt. It did not disappoint! What a wonderfully immersive ‘shared experience’ we had. The organisers had thought of everything to create an experience for us which we will linger in our memories. We congratulate the planning team, including those who made the yummy food, thoughtfully catering for those of us who are veggies/vegans: watching four films all in one day makes you hungry. We learned from our own experience that there are always technical issues, and the techies did a great job, not just with the picture but proving good sound and the hearing loop. It was the immersive experience which we liked so much (having done it for Screen-next-the-Sea) especially as this time, of course, we were not ‘on duty’ so could enjoy time out to receive the ‘feel-good factor’. We know about the preparation involved in events like this but also know that it’s always worth it when you have 100% happy customers going away wanting more. We hope the planning team will be encouraged by this and plan for next time! Joolz and David Saunders

The stories are a strange mixture of humour and the grotesque: a room with terrible secrets in its walls: a drug that will blow more than just your mind: an art installation to die for: a supermarket poltergeist with an eye for fashion. Sixteen short stories and one novella from a master of the strange, the unusual, the downright unsettling.

Stephen Jones, World Fantasy Award-winning writer and editor recently wrote of his work: “Laurence Staig is one of the great unsung heroes of British horror and fantasy fiction.”He will be reading a story a day for a “Told at Dusk” week on the newly launched Poppyland Radio - yet to be scheduled, see the Poppyland Radio site for details.Told at Dusk, Remembered at Dawn is published by The Brooligan Press and is available on Amazon as a Kindle and paperback.

Mary Hardy's Georgian Holt: an indoor 'walking tour'

British Summer Time Facts

William Willet promoted the idea of BST in 1907 so he could have more time to play golf in the evenings. BST became useful during the First World War as the extended daylight hours reduced the amount of coal needed to power lighting. Natural light has many health benefits, including improved calcium absorption, higher levels of energy, and better sleep. Take advantage of summertime by spending more time outdoors. Lost sleep is associated with higher risk of heart attacks, and the evidence seems to bear this out: hospital admissions for heart attacks increase by 25% on the Monday after springing forward, and decline by 21% after falling back.

MARGARET BIRD Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and author of nine volumes on Mary Hardy’s diaries, for this evening talk brings Mary right into Holt and explores with us the buildings which were a part of her life. What made Georgian Holt special? Twenty sites described by this local diarist give us some answers. The town was one of only four outside Norwich to host the county quarter sessions and was renowned for its sample market in corn - both drivers of the local economy. Its wealth of public houses, hosting busy winter seasons, two outstanding headmasters at the grammar school and its service as an antiinvasion military hub combined to help give Holt its vitality. The talk will visit twenty places to see, associated with daily life and work in Holt in the late 18th century. A leaflet and map will be available to follow the route. Wednesday 16th March 2022 The Venue, Holt Community Centre. Entry fee, £7 Non-Members Pre booking only from holtsocietymembership@outlook.com Doors open at 6pm. Talk commences: 7.00pm http://www.theholtsociety.org

Salvation Army receives funding to help feed vulnerable people and families

was an amazing and generous grant. Support for our ongoing work with food parcels is always welcome but this grant is particularly timely because of the extremely high demand for assistance. Households are being hit by high inflation with fuel prices soaring and price hikes on many essential food items.”

The Salvation Army in Norfolk has been awarded funding to help feed vulnerable people and families in the county.

Claire Cullens, Chief Executive, said: “Norfolk Community Foundation is delighted to support this much needed project that will make a real difference in the community. We wish The Salvation Army every success with their work.”

The church and charity is being supported by the Norfolk Community Foundation through its Household Support Fund to purchase and distribute food parcels.

If you’d like to find out more information about The Salvation Army in Norfolk, please telephone 01279 219811 or email EastofEngland@salvationarmy.org.uk

The Salvation Army is an international Christian church and registered charity which has been transforming lives for more than 150 years. Working in 132 countries worldwide, it offers friendship, practical help and support for people at all levels of need. In the UK and Ireland, this work includes more than 650 community churches and social centres.

For further information on applying for funding go to Norfolk Community Foundation’s website www.norfolkfoundation.com.

We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop. Mother Teresa

Major Howard Russell, leader of the Salvation Army in Norfolk, said the funding would have a significant impact. He added: “We are very thankful to have received these funds and this

Wild About Gardens

High Kelling Garden Club

At our meeting on 14th February, Paul Laurie entertained us and informed us about the many birds that inhabit our gardens, and their habits and requirements. He accompanied his talk with wonderful photographs – taken by himself – and many anecdotes about his vast experience of wildlife watching, which has taken him all over the world. The blackbirds, robins, chaffinches we see in our gardens in winter are most probably migrants from colder areas, our summer residents having also moved on - this is known as displacement migration. However, the visiting fieldfares and redwings we only see in the winter are classic migrants. With changing farming practices, chaffinches have moved from farmland into gardens and many other birds become reliant on the food we put out to get them through the winter. Nuthatches and coal tits will store fat and nuts by pushing them into bark crevices. Owls like to be near human habitation because they are more likely to find mice, their major food.

A talk by Chelsea Gold Award Winning Garden Designer Mandy Buckland

Binham Memorial Hall on March 18th at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00 pm). Tickets £10 a head including a glass of wine/soft drink.

Mandy lives locally, founded garden design company Greencube, and her past achievements include a gold medal at both Chelsea Flower Show and Hampton Court Flower Show. She will come equipped with plenty of ideas and enthusiasm, perfectly timed for Spring.

Book early to avoid disappointment by emailing fobptickets@gmail.com Parking spaces are available at the Memorial Hall and the Priory Church. Organised by The Friends of Binham Priory.

The most common land bird is the diminutive wren, whose main food is spiders, 200 of which may be found in half a square metre! Many birds use spider silk for their nests, so spiders are essential in our gardens. Paul also described some of the butterflies and moths we are more likely to see these days, such as the Silver Washed Fritillary, the White Admiral and the Hummingbird Hawk Moth. 5 Our next meeting is on Monday 14th March, when we have a change of speaker - Julia Dovey - who will talk about being a volunteer at Felbrigg and garden redevelopment plans. For further information, contact Tanya at hkgcsecretary@gmail.com or 01263 713974. New members and visitors are always welcome.

The concert takes place on Saturday 26th March at 7pm (please note the earlier time) at Fakenham Parish Church. Refreshments will be available before the performance and during the interval. Eagerly anticipating their first full-length concert since March 2019, a warm welcome is ensured.

Tickets are £12 (under 18s free) in advance, and can be purchased from Colin Blackmore (01485 544335 or blackburns12@btinternet.com) or through the website www.fakenhamchoralsociety.org

Fakenham Choral Society

Fakenham choral Society’s first performance of 2022 is sure to delight, with exciting works by Puccini and Dvorak. Conducted by music director, Mark Jones, the choir will be joined by soloists Graham Neal and Justin Harmer and their accompanist James Mooney-Dutton. Puccini’s thrilling Messa di Gloria and Dvorak’s romantic and tuneful Mass in D makes this a performance not to be missed.

Brazilian Butt Lift. Surgical and Non-surgical options for buttock enhancement.

2] Laser lipolysis and cellulite reduction. This procedure uses a fine laser fibre to reduce skin tether to reduce cellulite and improve skin texture. 3] Electromagnetic muscle stimulation. This painless, enjoyable procedure (that may make you giggle!) allows muscle toning and true non-surgical lifting by increasing muscle fibres in glutes- the main muscles that form bulk of the buttocks.

If you desire a full, shapely and lifted bottom or dislike cellulite, dimpling or volume loss and sagging due to ageing, weight loss or genetics then we have several options available for you. Until now the only available option was implants or fat transfer. Recently however new technology has become available that allows us to do this non-surgically.

Here is a list of available options at the Coltishall Clinic.

1] Liposuction and fat transfer. We can sculpt your waist by liposuction and inject fat in the buttocks. So we take fat from where you do not want it and move it to where you want it. Large volume fat transfer into muscles is not carried out but we place small amount just under skin to add volume, reduce cellulite and provide a lift.

4] Sculptra or Lanluma bum lift. These are injectable products that stimulate your body’s own collagen giving a dramatic plumping affect. Lanluma injections help to add volume to buttock area and also improve the appearance of skin by reducing indentations and smoothing cellulite.

5] Radiofrequency and ultrasound. These treatments help lift and firm up skin.

Schedule your consultation to design your bespoke treatment program. We have special packages available. Contact us via the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call 01603 736487.

Sheringham and Cromer Lions Club

This is to say a big thank you to all the Opticians in North Walsham, including Doctor’s Surgeries, Cromer, Sheringham, Holt, Fakenham and a lady named Jenny who all collect used spectacles for onward transmission via Chichester Lions Club to poor Third World Countries. These glasses make a huge difference to those abroad who have severe problems with their sight. So far this year we have collected more than ever before and are already sorting out another huge number for onward transmission in the next few weeks. I cannot tell you all how grateful we are for your support, which also means there are not many pairs wasted in Landfill. Please keep up the good work and remember if you are interested in our Lions’ work you may contact me, Liz Bowler on 01263 833866 or our Secretary Brian Harris on 01263 821276. We look forward to a summer of fun helping other needy people. Please contact us if you need support with small local projects in our area. Waking Up in April

Want to make new friends and have fun while mastering a new skill?

Many of us were enthralled by the curling at the Olympic Games. I was particularly impressed with the “sweepers”, with all their energy and their ability to have a critical effect on the path of the stones without tripping over. It made me wonder whether we should buy some brooms for our lawn bowling this season – but I fear we are far too old to prance down the green and our groundsmen might also have something to say about it!

Why not come along to High Kelling Village Hall and try your hand at Short Mat Bowls in a warm, friendly environment, with refreshments provided.

We are offering free afternoon taster sessions with expert tuition from experienced players. If you would like to find out more or book a taster session contact Lyn on 01263 713898 or Tony on 01263 713119

It will soon be April when we will have to wake up to fully play in the open air. Many of our members have been keeping active during the winter with indoor bowling. - either “short mat” or “carpet” bowls. Many people don’t know the difference. Short mat bowls is played on a carpet, ideally 45 feet long and 6 feet wide, with their bowls of the standard size used on the green in the summer. Carpet bowling, on the other hand, uses much smaller ammunition, provided specially for the sport - and play is on a shorter, 30-foot carpet.

Rowing Returns to Blakeney

Members of Blakeney Rowing Club are looking forward to the resumption of Spring and Summer outings from Blakeney Carnser. It has been an excellent winter of rowing on The Broads, with social expeditions and competitive events enjoyed by many. However, at the time of writing, preparations are being made to take one of the club’s skiffs from Barton Broad to Bayfield Brecks for its winter makeover. Meanwhile, the other rowing boat, resplendent in club colours, will be placed in Blakeney Dinghy Park, ready for use. Soon, when all painting has been completed, there will be two skiffs at Blakeney, side by side, waiting for crews to take them out. The next phase of the rowing calendar, with trips to Blakeney Point or to Cley, will now take up the next few months. Let’s hope for warm weather! See some pictures of happy local rowers enjoying their sport on the club website at crablakeney.wordpress.com One prominent February feature has been the quest for The Robin Combe Trophy. Crews have timed themselves over a set course to achieve the fastest row. Who has won the trophy? Check the website to find out. The picture accompanying this article shows one hopeful crew just after an attempt to win the prize – an engraved hip flask. Why not get in touch with the club to try skiff rowing for yourselves? There is no obligation to compete. The social rows provide great exercise; they are also fun. A row to Blakeney Point is an experience not to be missed. If you want to know more, contact club captain Humphrey at hborgnis@icloud.com to arrange a trial row. New rowers, or those returning to the sport, are always made welcome and will be coached and looked after. Besides viewing the website, look at the club’s activities on Instagram and on Facebook. Hope to see you on the water soon. Until then, best wishes and stay safe. Barry Howes.

North Norfolk Railway Looking Forward to 2022 Season After Strong Performance in 2021

The North Norfolk Railway has announced that over 143,000 visitors travelled on the 5½ mile heritage line during its 2021/22 financial year which ended last week. The popular 5½ mile heritage line was forced to close between Christmas 2020 and April 2021, then endured three-months where only limited operations were possible but rallied in the second half of the year to welcome a total of 143,632 passengers. Graham Hukins, Commercial Manager, commented, “This is a very strong result in the circumstances, and we are looking forward to a more normal season in 2022. Pre-Covid, we would expect to carry around 160,000 visitors in a full year, so we are very pleased with the 2021 result which is a testament to our volunteers and staff who ensured we delivered great experience for visitors. He added, “Since the New Year, the team been busy with a huge amount of work behind the scenes to get ready for this year and we’re looking forward to running trains and welcoming visitors over the rest of the year.” The work has included annual servicing of steam and diesel engines, repainting some of the line’s vintage carriages, track maintenance, clearing vegetation from the lineside and revarnishing the wooden floors at the line’s three stations. “Looking after historic locomotives, carriages, track and buildings is a huge year-round effort, “explained Graham, “but there are some tasks that can only be carried out when we’re closed to the public. He added, “We’ve also looked at ways to ensure today’s passengers get the most out of their visit so have compiled an information flyer to help visitors explore Sheringham, Weybourne and Holt stations, and devised an activity sheet for children. Our rover tickets are great value, allowing unlimited travel all day so it’s important that passengers know just how much history, heritage, scenery and wildlife there is to discover.” Steam and heritage diesel trains run at weekends in March before the line’s daily service, which operates from 1 April to 30 October, commences. Passengers booking in advance will enjoy special, discounted fares – full details including times and how to book can be found at www.nnrailway.co.uk.

A practical guide to the new ‘no fault’ divorce law

By Emma George, Family Solicitor, Hayes + Storr

The long-awaited Act for “no fault” divorce was passed in June 2020. It is due to become law on 6th April 2022. The law is set to end the ‘blame game’ and cut short lengthy separation periods. Here is a practical guide to the changes in divorce proceedings from April 2022 onwards in England and Wales.

1. There is no need to place blame Under the new legislation, couples can divorce without having to cite blame. They will no longer need to rely on one of the 5 grounds for divorce, which previously included: • Unreasonable behaviour • Adultery • Two years separation (with consent) • Five years separation (without consent) •Desertion These five grounds will be removed. Under the new law, parties can make a joint statement to apply for a divorce order if they both agree that the marriage has come to an end. Previously, only one spouse could apply for the divorce. This new option allows both parties to apply together, in a joint, more agreeable way.

2. New terminology The term decree nisi has been used by the court to mark the first stage of divorce after the acknowledgement of papers by the spouse and after the application has been granted by the court. Under the reformed legislation, this stage of the process will be known as a conditional order.

Similarly decree absolute, which marks the final stage of divorce, confirming that the marriage has officially come to an end, will be known as a final order. This follows the current terms used for ending civil partnerships in a bid to try and simplify the legal process.

3. You can no longer defend a divorce Under the new Act, it will not be possible to contest the decision to divorce.

4. There is a minimum wait period for the Final Order

There will be a minimum period of 20 weeks between the initial application and the conditional order, and another six weeks between the conditional and the final order. That means that even a straightforward divorce will take at least six months to complete. However, as all divorces are now applied for online, it is unlikely that the process will take any longer than the current divorce process.

5. Is there a change to the court fee? From 30 September 2021 the Government increased the court fee from £550 to £593. Whilst official guidance is yet to be released, it is unlikely that this will change prior to April 2022.

created with the intention of making the process of divorce easier and more amicable, but it is unlikely to have any effect on financial matters relating to divorce.

Clients are strongly advised to seek expert legal advice to resolve any financial disputes, and to document any agreement reached into a legally recognised consent order which is then full and final and cannot be changed.

If you need any advice from our family law specialists and would like to arrange an appointment, please call 01263 712835 or email emma.george@hayes-storr.com.

This article is for general information only and does not constitute legal or professional advice. Please note that the law may have changed since this article was published. Always seek our specific advice.

6. How will this affect the finances? The financial side of divorce will not change. Divorce and finances are separate but run parallel in the court system. The Act has been
