News from The Venue - May

A Note from the Editor

Hallelujah we are finally coming out of this crazy season, and every day we are taking calls and emails to say that groups are going to start up again at the Venue.

Where did Spring go, did it happen when I wasn’t looking? As I am writing (bank holiday Monday) the wind is blowing and the rain is beating on the window. Just when we are looking forward to getting out and about as things are opening up, the weather has other ideas. There were still one or two stoic souls eating fish and chips on the beach today determined to enjoy their al fresco dining experience! It is good to see businesses open again and everyone keeping to social distancing. It bodes well for the next phase of the lockdown easing.

Like many gardeners, I am champing at the bit to get my patch ready for the Summer, the greenhouse is full to bursting just waiting for the risk of frost to pass. Perhaps now is the time to dust off that barbeque and prepare to welcome friends and family back for the gatherings we have all missed so much. Let’s hope for more clement weather in the weeks to come and a return to more normal times. Whatever you plans, enjoy your May magazine. Keep safe and well.

Jo – Editor.

Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines. Month June July August

Copy deadline Publishing date Tuesday 1st June Friday 11th June Tuesday 6th July Friday 16th July Tuesday 3rd August Friday 13th August

We have a new band of musicians called Soul Traders practising their music on Sundays, which we are excited to support and hear at events in the future, and Amplifon are returning to do hearing tests on Tuesdays. We are also talking to Drama Groups to see if we can form a local Holt Dramatic Group to be based at the Venue...if you are interested in being a part of this, please contact us; it’s about time Holt had its own theatre group, and with our new stage and lighting, we are the perfect place for amateur dramatics! On the maintenance front, we are now getting quotes to resurface the front of the Centre, which is sorely needed and overdue, and also landscape the outside areas to provide us with a fresh new look and enable these areas to be utilised. Electrical work is ongoing, we have a new reception area being decorated to the front of the building, and some new doors to update the tired old ones. Watch out for our preloved tabletop sale in June – more details to follow.

Lost World - Don’t mention the war! (part 1)

Les Kinsley’s recollections continued with help from Mr Stanley Vardigan aka Squeaker, recorded by Heather Bowes. I was 14 when the Second World War began and had been at work on the farm for about a year Together with some of my friends, I lied about my age in order to join the Home Guard. Most of us were teenagers but the men in charge were much older. They included a man with a wooden leg, a local seed merchant and my Dad (who had fought in the first war). My Dad was a corporal, but we did not obey his orders very well, and I used to catch it for that when I got home! We were issued with guns and some ammunition. The bullets all had to be accounted for, but we really wanted them to go after pheasants. The seed merchant had a lorry and as our officer he used to take us over to Holkham for training. We had to go through dykes full of water there which we hated. However, we found spare bullet cases lying around there which we collected. Then we were issued with more bullets! Squeaker was not into living off the land like me and he remembers having to be very well behaved with his officer, Mr Fisher, who kept the local shop. Mr Fisher had food under the counter to supplement the ration. You did not upset him! Every week we had to patrol overnight and guard the village from invaders. As we had worked a full day and had to work next day we used to sneak off to a nearby barn and have a sleep. Unfortunately, we got caught at this and in order to keep us awake we were made to go over to Hindolveston during the night and sign in a book kept by the local policeman. Squeaker said he had to go on those, and he was with a chap who was a bit nervous. This man was a bit of a menace with his gun. If he heard a noise, he would shoot his gun in that direction. Squeaker always kept a close eye on him in case he shot him by mistake. Sqeaker was based in an underground room at the Railway Institute but we were using the Pavillion on Briston recreation ground. A farmer kept his cattle on there overnight and one of the cows was really good tempered. She would stand for us while we milked her and then we would heat the milk in an old copper in the Pavillion.

County Councillor News

from County Councillor Dr Marie Strong Wells Division marie.strong@norfolk.gov.uk; 07920 286 597

Dear Residents of Wells Division, It has been a privilege and pleasure to be your county councillor for these past 12 years and I am sad as this relationship comes to an end. You have joined me in many campaigns whether related to your needs and wishes or to benefit fellow residents across our division and the county. I have not yet completed the list, but it includes: 1. Flood Sirens, Better Broadband for Norfolk, Mobile phone reception, DAB, MIPS, Coasthopper, Shoreline Management Plan, Marine Conservation Zone, Wells Field Study Centre, Pub is the Hub, Mobile Libraries. And I have had the privilege of collaborating with so many of you –

ANNUAL REPORT ON BEHALF OF THE HOLT TOWN COUNCIL

The past 18 months the Covid-19 Global Pandemic period has presented the Holt Town Council and its team with several challenging issues. Thanks, are extended to the team for their commitment, dedication and the professionalism displayed throughout and to be able to report that collectively we have managed to achieve several key tasks despite the challenges faced. We provided help and support for the vulnerable and those in need during the first lockdown in 2020. We delivered food packages and prescriptions 6 days a week and supported over 150 families. Later in 2020 we gave grant funding to the Holt Caring Society to carry out prescription runs on our behalf.

During the year we gave grant funding to other community groups in the town who were making a difference during Covid19; Holt Youth Project £2750 Treehouse Café £2750 Owl Playgroup £1000, Holt Caring Society £500, The Venue £1000, Little Lambs £ 250. Thanks must go to council members for their agreement to provide these grants to help those community groups provide support, and continue to do so, in this critical time for the benefit of those who are vulnerable in our society. The Budgens fire during this period was a massive blow. The Holt Town Council provided support to Budgens, along with the North Norfolk District Council and other organisations, during this critical period to continue support across our community.

A picnic area is being created at Spout Hills with benches kindly donated by Cllr Philo and his wife Claudia. Our thanks must go to the Spout Hills sub-committee and the volunteers who provide vital support to maintain this 14-acre area to an extremely high standard. The whole team have worked hard whenever restrictions allow to ensure Spout Hills and Little Hills are well maintained. Spout Hills has been an oasis of peace and tranquillity much enjoyed by many during the pandemic period. A long serving member of the maintenance team, Paul Dulson will be retiring in May, and we extend thanks to Paul for all his hard work and commitment. The need to replace and strengthen the maintenance team means that we have recruited an apprentice and a senior member, whose combined task is to ensure the town always looks its best.

Three Market Town Initiatives were applied for and won. One to provide several new planters across the town, and to provide sustainable planting. The planters are now all in place and have been planted up, a huge thank you to Sarah Tribe and the Maintenance Team for all their effort on this project. Another Market Town Initiative, the Yellow Brick Road, was applied for and secured to provide several changes in the town to help those in wheelchairs and with impaired vision to navigate safely through the town. Delayed due to the Covid-19 restrictions Highways are now programming the improvement to be carried out in the next few weeks. A third Market Town Initiative was for Public Realm space. Apart from the Memorial Gardens, Holt suffers email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

individual residents and local councils - seeking solutions to problems, needs and wishes. COVID-19 grant scheme extended: A grant scheme which has provided support with food and bills for vulnerable households during the pandemic has been extended – renamed the Covid Local Support – renamed S-cheme, extended until 20 June with a further £40 million allocated. This is to provide much-needed support to low income households at risk of poverty and financial hardship. Mike and I look forward to ‘bumping’ into you (safely) now there will be more time to visit and enjoy the lovely parishes which constitute our division.

County Cllr Dr Marie Strong. Wells Division. Wells County Council Division presently consists of: Barshams & Houghton St Giles, Binham with Cockthorpe, Blakeney, Brinton with Sharrington, Field Dalling & Saxlingham, Glandford with Letheringsett, Great Snoring, Great & Little Walsingham, Hindringham, Holkham, Langham, Morston, Sculthorpe, Stiffkey, Stody with Hunworth, Thornage & Little Thornage, Warham, Wells-next-the-Sea, Wighton, Wiveton

from a lack of Public Realm space as identified through Holt Vision, and other reports. A Public Realm area in Fish Hill, Star Plain and Bull Alley is in progress. Covid-19 limitations and building work in progress in these locations has delayed progress. A full topographical survey has taken place, and architects drawing, and concept will be available shortly.

Going forward we are looking to undertake a long overdue major toilet refurbishment in Church Street to bring it up to modern day standards. A new play and exercise area off Beresford Road is also being planned.

A revised Care Home application on land off Hempstead Road was received, reviewed, and supported by the Holt Town Council. Full approval has now been given to the application by NNDC. This will secure new and welcomed employment for people from the community as well as providing vital accommodation to those in the locality that require special support. A Hopper Bus to support the local community is currently being reviewed and the anticipated start date for a Hopper Bus service to and from key location across the town is scheduled to commence in September 2021. We welcome a new member to the Holt Town Council, Cllr Sandra Roper and look forward to working with her as a full member of our team from the middle of May.

Looking forward there is always much to do on behalf of the whole community we represent. Despite the setback and ongoing issues resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic we look forward to reviewing and implementing changes designed to make the town of Holt the incredibly special place that it is.

Before the Voyage

Today she stands alone Before the ocean he has crossed, Her heart so far from home Must know such depth To hallow loss.

For all the gold and diamonds That have weighed upon her head, She would that her Odysseus Remained with her instead.

Stir the flour and egg into the fruit mixture until well combined and there are no pockets of flour. Pour into the lined loaf tin and level the mixture. Community Spirit. Together we are stronger!

FROM THE REGISTERS

Dear Friends As restrictions are lifted and life begins to adapt to a new normal, so we begin to think about making plans for the months ahead. While our churches may have been closed for public and private worship at times during the past 12 months, the life of the church has continued. The daily rhythm of prayer and worship did not cease yet we look forward to the day when we can sing together and won’t need to reserve a place for Sunday worship or limit the number of people attending. However, while worship continued other things had to be put on hold and we have much ground to make up. We look forward to being able to eat and drink together and chat together and explore new ways we can serve the community. As we re-group and rebuild, we also need to recruit new volunteers to help maintain and sustain the life of the church. There are always opportunities to be involved in church life, from committees, reading or leading prayers in church, re-enacting bible stories in school, fund raising, catering, cleaning, singing in the choir, serving the community, visiting, to flower arranging and gardening. You can get involved with some things even if you don’t attend church. Offers of help to look after our church grounds would be greatly appreciated, or even making the best of your creative talents by arranging flowers! All offers gratefully received and I am delighted that a recent advert for volunteers to help look after God’s acre, the churchyard, has resulted in one new recruit. There still is a degree of uncertainty about the months ahead and our return to normality will not be a stampede or even a rush, rather a gradual and gentle return as we seek to live out our Christian calling to love God and to love our neighbour as ourselves. But of course, the church is not the only organisation, charity or community group to take a hit during this past year. A variety of groups have seen the number of their volunteers and users depleted and I am sure they would welcome approaches from people wanting to get involved. There has been much community spirit and good will in evidence during the past year and I very much hope it will continue as things return to some normality. As communities in our villages and towns begin to come out of an enforced hibernation there will be new opportunities to get involved and I hope and pray that there will be those who wish to regain much of what has been lost and continue to make a difference by giving their time and their talents to renew and sustain the communities in which we live. Fr. Howard

Joggers Safety

Dear Jo, I frequently drive out of Holt along the Kelling Road and have concerns about the safety of joggers/runners who also use this road. I completely understand the lack of suitable routes for running on pavements around Holt. I also appreciate that in order to run a decent length route, running along unpaved roads is probably unavoidable. My concern is for the runners’ visibility. This particular road is tree-lined and, often, dappled light results in high contrast areas of light and shade. I have seen runners using this road wearing grey/black clothing which makes them very difficult to see, particularly when under the shade of the trees. Therefore, to ensure the safety of all road users, please could I strongly suggest that runners consider wearing a hi-vis waistcoat or sash, which would greatly improve their visibility.

Kindest regards Grace Glaister

Christian Aid

Dear Jo, The generous people of Holt have supported Christian Aid for many years. Street collections have been the norm, but as a result of Covid it has not been possible to do this for the past couple of years. May I kindly request that the website below is included within my letter? https://giving.tapsimple.org/online/christian-aid/holt-christian-aidweek-2021 This link will enable readers to donate directly to this wonderful charity. Christian Aid has been supported by St Andrews and All Angels in High Kelling and also by the Methodist church in Holt. This charity has been operating for 75 years in 29 different countries and reaches out to all religions and races.

Kind regards Derek Godfrey

Dear Jo, I just wanted to let your readers know that with the gradual lifting of lockdown restrictions, we plan to resume ringing the bells at St Andrew’s from Friday 21st May. We will initially hope to ring on a Friday evening from 8pm for 45 minutes and on Sunday mornings prior to services. We will also ring for weddings as and when required. We will gradually increase our Friday practice evenings back to the normal length (7.30pm to 9pm) as restrictions allow. We hope you enjoy hearing the bells once again.

Best wishes, Sue Morton, Holt Tower Captain

A Big Thank You

Dear Jo, I would like to say a big thank you to those that came to the rescue of the Taxi Driver and myself, when I collapsed and pulled the driver with me, who then was struggling to get me up. You saw this and came to help. This happened on Thursday in March, outside Budgens. You know who you are so once again, a big thank you.

Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month at Toll Barn Vets!

May marks the annual Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month – a month where we celebrate and recognise the skills and value veterinary nurses bring to our team and the health and welfare of our patients. The title Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) can be used by nurses who undertake vigorous practical and theoretical training and examinations to qualify as Veterinary Nurses and be awarded entry onto the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Register. They follow the Code of Professional Conduct for Veterinary Nurses and once qualified they are required to keep their skills up to date by undertaking Continued Professional Development to ensure we always treat our patients with the most up to date skills and techniques. Several of our RVN’s have undertaken further qualifications in particular areas of interest including Behaviour, Feline Care, Physiotherapy, Exotics and Dentistry. At Toll Barn Vets we are proud of our skilled team of 9 RVN’s who work closely with our veterinary surgeons to ensure your pets receive the best possible care. RVN’s use their technical knowledge, hands on expertise and empathy for a whole range of tasks including advising clients on their pets health and welfare both in person and over the phone, triaging emergency patients, administering life-saving first aid and CPR, blood sampling, placing intravenous catheters, performing in house laboratory tests, taking x-rays, dressing wounds, assisting with surgical #procedures, monitoring patients during general anaesthesia, preparing patients for surgery, caring for patients after surgery, caring for sick hospitalised inpatients by medicating, wound management, monitoring of key Kerrys_Layout 1 29/04/2021 12:04 Page 1 parameters, fluid therapy and very importantly love and TLC.

The skills and knowledge recognised by the RVN qualification is why at Toll Barn Vets we ONLY allow RVN’s to perform our veterinary nurse clinics and to monitor General anaesthetics and anaesthetic recoveries for our patients. Our RVN’s provide a huge range of clinics to help our patients including Laser Therapy and Physiotherapy to help our pets with arthritis, soft tissue injuries and wound healing, claw clipping, microchipping, Second vaccinations, flea and worming clinics to discuss your pets lifestyle and risk factors and then tailor a parasite program to their specific needs, post operation checks, blood pressure monitoring, diabetes clinics, senior pet checks, puppy and kitten checks, dental checks, 6 month healthchecks for VIP members and nutritional advice. At Toll Barn Vets we are also an Approved Training Practice allowing us to train future generations of veterinary nurses to our high standards! To find out more about training to become an RVN visit the British Veterinary Nursing Association website. To book an appointment with our RVN’s please call 01692 407126.

MANDY GLASS - PERSONAL TRAVEL AGENT

So in March 2020 I think we were all stunned by the arrival of Covid 19 and think we were all under the assumption that this would just disappear within a few months - but how wrong were we all.

A year on and, with the aid of the Vaccine roll out, we can all see light at the end of the tunnel and hopefully be reunited with our loved ones and have that long awaited holiday.

I am in the office waiting for your lovely holiday enquiries and have been very busy taking holiday bookings for 2022 and 2023. Once we know the government guidance on the Traffic Light system Green, Amber or Red then we will hopefully feel more confident to book that much needed break.

Most tour operators are offering very flexible booking terms so please do not hesitate to contact me and I will gladly run through the details with you.

From UK breakaways - Tailor made itineraries - safaris and world cruises please give me a call or email me the details and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Pumpkin

This little man is Pumpkin, and he came to C.A.T.S. in January. It was clear that he’d had little contact with humans but now 4 months later after gentle socialisation at his own pace he’s ready to find that special home. He has become playful and will do ‘roly-polys’ and wants to be fussed. As far as we know he’s had little experience of living in a house, or contact with dogs but loves other cats, so might benefit from having an older more confident cat friend. He has been neutered, microchipped, and is fully vaccinated, so if you feel you have the patience and understanding to give Pumpkin a loving forever home, please contact C.A.T.S. via our Facebook page, or ring 01328 878517. Home check and adoption fees apply. We are holding two fundraising events in the near future: Sunday 31st May, Indoor and outdoor car boot sale, Hempton Memorial Hall, NR21 7LG.

Sunday 6th June, Open garden, Home Farmhouse, Hindringham, NR21 0PS. 10am till 5 pm, Plant sale and refreshments. Admission £5.00, children free. Charity number 1153666.

Busy busy busy

For those of you walking up Overstrand Road, you may have noticed a new sight appearing this year. Giant tipis situated on the North Lawn of The Grove were erected in November and since then, we, at The Grove, have been busy building the adjoining kitchen and bar, landscaping and getting ready to open Sundown, our new seasonal restaurant serving Norfolk tapas, pizza and ice-cream. The tapas menu includes, Wells cockles, grilled prawns with oyster sauce, BBQ artichoke, Norfolk samphire, and of course, fresh Cromer crab. Have I got you salivating yet? The pizzas include John’s Escape – which is virtually all garden produce, The Gangway, which is crab, anchovies, prawns, and Gressingham Special, which is Hoisin duck. How about now? But that is not all that’s been happening. This year, we have also revamped our afternoon teas, built a terrace on the Conker Lawn keeping those in mind who like to sit outside and enjoy an afternoon tea or two-rosette meal from our a la carte restaurant. So if you are feeling hungry and fancy a treat, you can book either the main restaurant, an afternoon tea or table at Sundown via our website. Or if you fancy a nosey, come and say hello, however busy we are, we are never too busy to talk. 01263 512412

A warm welcome to our new Day Centre manager

Looking towards June and Step 4 on the Government’s Road Map to recovery… you will see some changes at Age Concern - some general maintenance and improvements are currently being undertaken but more importantly we have engaged a new Centre Manager – Anneliese Maerz who joined us in February with excellent qualifications and the experience necessary to support our future needs.

something new. She herself learned to play a brass instrument when she was 50 and regrets not having learned when she was younger.

Anneliese’s career has encompassed hands-on practice, supervision, management, education and training of staff from multidisciplinary settings; community and residential work with learning disability, sensory impairment, dementia and physical disability and older people. She is not a person who is flappable in a crisis having led the Emergency Crisis Support Team in Northern Ireland responding to both civil and terrorist-related incidents.

Anneliese Maerz, new Day Centre manager at Age Concern (North Norfolk)

Anneliese Maerz joins us after a career of over 40 years in social work and social care in the statutory, independent and voluntary sectors in Northern Ireland, Lincolnshire and Norfolk. Most recently she worked as the Older People’s Specialist for the Salvation Army covering the East of England. Living in Sheringham for the past 15 years, she is delighted to be able to walk to work and start to meet the older people of this area of Norfolk. She has a passion for older people and is a great believer in them being ‘fruitful in later life’, never being too old to learn

Eat Cake for Veg’s Sake!

Here’s a great way to enjoy a fabulously delicious cake and pretend to be a bit healthy at the same time! Carrot cake sounds like a contradiction in terms, but the addition of vegetables into cakes has been going on since time immemorial, and if your kids won’t eat veg this may be a really sneaky and great way to get some into them! On a serious note, it’s also a terrific way to achieve a really moist cake, and one that is a good keeper too. I have always found carrot cakes to be a bit too oily for me, as the recipe usually calls for oil rather than butter, so I devised my own to get around this. The result is a really moist and scrumptious cake, which I don’t tend to ice as I don’t think it needs it, but you could if you wanted to. You can’t really go wrong with this recipe; I make mine in a 2lb loaf tin for ease of slicing, and it’s best if you make it a day ahead of eating (if you can bear to wait that long).

The Trustees welcome Anneliese to the team along with taking this opportunity to thank and offer our best wishes to Juliet English who retired as a valued and hard-working Trustee at the end of March. We wish them both well.

Method Cream together butter, sugar and almond essence until pale and light. Sift together all dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Slowly add a little egg and a tablespoon of flour mix to the creamed butter mixture, beating well to avoid curdling (if this happens just add a little more of the flour mix and keep beating) Once all the egg and flour has been thoroughly mixed together, stir in the grated zest, carrot and finally the sultanas. Pour into a greased and lined 2lb loaf tin and bake in the oven on 180° for approx 35 – 40 mins, or until a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Rest in tin for 10 mins, and then turn out onto a wire cooling rack. Keeps in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Her interest in dementia has opened new areas of work in Cognitive Stimulation Therapy successfully running a Care Farming project with Hadleigh Special Breeds Farm and a dementia home in Southend; a prison group of older men with dementia; and a community group with the Sheringham Salvation Army. This is one activity she would hope to develop with us at Age Concern (North Norfolk) once the centre re-opens.

Horticultural enthusiasts invited to return to Creake Abbey’s 2021 Plant Lovers’ Day

Strict Covid-safety measurements will be in place to ensure visitors and stall holders feel safe. There will be a simple one-way system in place, visitor numbers will be monitored within the event area and, as needed, a queue may form at the entrance. Ordering from the nurseries in advance is welcomed and contact details for all the nurseries will be available from

Creake Abbey’s highly popular Plant Lovers’ Day returns on Saturday 29th May 2021 to this beautiful monastic site three miles south of Burnham Market in north Norfolk. The region’s budding gardeners are invited to enjoy the botanical delights on sale at this much-loved horticultural event, now in its 14th year.

For Creake Abbey’s Plant Lovers’ Day 2021, 30 specialist plant nurseries from across East Anglia and beyond will showcase their finest perennials, exotics, bulbs, shrubs, trees and climbers. From olive trees, bamboo and grasses to carnivorous plants, roses and wildflowers, the buzz of excitement is palpable as visitors find an unusual specimen or something irresistible for their garden or as a gift for a loved-one. Nurserymen are always happy to answer questions and to provide advice on a wide range of high-quality plants, sold at reasonable prices.

https://www.creakeabbey.co.uk/events/plant-lovers-day. Visitors are encouraged to spread their visit across the whole day and not arrive at the peak time of 11am to 12noon. Masks are to be worn at all times and visitors should respect social distancing rules across the venue’s outdoor location on the breezy north Norfolk coast. The café and food hall will be serving takeaway coffee, cake and light meals. If restrictions allow, then there will be some indoor seating. A paramedic will be in attendance.

Once again, proceeds from the day will go to Wells Community Hospital Trust at Wells-next-the-Sea. Over the past 14 years Creake Abbey has raised over £25,000 for the hospital through its annual Plant Lovers’ Day and subsequent donations. The hospital has been providing health and wellbeing services in Norfolk for more than 100 years. Alongside clinics, the hospital is spearheading services for the community including a digital hub, community café, parents and toddler groups as well as a program of exercise classes. A Story of Determination

It was with great pleasure and thanks that Friends of Holt Hall (FOHH) recently received a donation from Ware Hall, famous for its own history in not accepting a decision by the County Council and doing something about it.

‘I worked alongside Mike Marshall’s (Holt Hall Co-ordinator) team of volunteers. Fond memories of working adventures in such a wonderful place so full of atmosphere’. Terry Kane, Ware Hall, Wells-next-the-Sea.

The passion of the Friends of Holt Hall, following Norfolk County Council’s decision to close this wonderful Environmental and Outdoor Learning Centre, can be compared to that of a little older lady from Ware. Her story is as follows:

In 1953, Hertfordshire Council informed May Savidge that her 15th Century house in Ware was to be demolished to make way for a road. She resolved to try to save the building for 15 years and fight the decision. She wrote “If this little house is really in the way I would rather move it and re-erect it than see it destroyed”. So began a labour of love and 23 years of hardship, as with stoic determination she worked, mostly singlehandedly, to save the building, brick by brick, beam by beam. In 1969, aged 58, she had numbered each beam and pane of glass so her home could be reassembled like a giant jigsaw puzzle, 100 miles away in the seaside town of Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk.

“I just won’t have such a marvellous old house bulldozed to the ground” she said “I’ve got nothing to do all day, so I might as well do it myself” and indeed she did. During this dismantling she even lived in the house, at times under the stars in the cold.

Strangers sent her money to help her, one commenting “Yours is the spirit that once made Britain great”. She noted “My Mother brought us up on the maxim that there is no such word as can’t”.

After the move it took a further 10 years for the house to become watertight and she moved back in, in her 70’s. In 1986, the Queen recognised her pluck, inviting her to a Buckingham Palace Garden party. However, in later life she found things difficult and on her death in 1993, aged 82, she died with the house not fully finished.

Her niece, Christine Adams was able to complete the work, partly funded beyond the grave, by selling her Aunt’s vast stock of memorabilia. It was run as a Bed and Breakfast and you can now stay in a Gypsy Caravan in the garden.

Extracts from ‘A lifetime in the building: The extraordinary story of May Savidge and the house she moved’ by Christine Adams and Michael McMahon. The hardbacked book is out of print but there is a paperbacked edition called ‘Miss Savidge moves her house’.

Second call out in two days for RNLI Wells lifeboat volunteers

The RNLI Wells Inshore lifeboat was tasked at 1.19pm on Friday 15 April by H.M Coastguard to investigate a missing kayaker who had gone fishing with his brother in Blakeney Harbour mouth. The two adult brothers had left Blakeney Quay to go fishing together in kayaks and had become separated whilst on the water. One of them called mayday on a hand-held VHF radio when he was unable to see his companion. The D-Class Lifeboat Peter Wilcox left Wells Lifeboat Station at 1.25pm, arriving on scene at Blakeney Harbour mouth at 1.44pm and continuing into Blakeney Pit. At 1.50pm, the volunteer lifeboat crew of three located the kayaker who had reported his brother as missing. A visual search of the area for the missing kayaker then commenced. The missing kayaker and his kayak were found by the coastguard safe and uninjured at 2.06pm. He was waiting for his companion aground on sand in Blakeney Creek. The Wells inshore lifeboat was stood down at 2.15pm. At 3pm the lifeboat was recovered in Holkham Bay, as there was insufficient water in the main harbour channel due to the ebbing tide. It was back at the lifeboat house at 3.02pm. The lifeboat was sanitised, rehoused, refuelled and ready for service at 3.35pm. Wells RNLI volunteer helm, James Betteridge, said: ‘The kayaker who reported his missing brother, did so as soon as he was concerned, which was the right thing to do. We would always prefer to be called out early, than have a potentially more serious situation to deal with’. RNLI advice for kayakers and canoers is: · Always carry a means of calling for help and keep it within reach · Wear a buoyancy aid or lifejacket. · Check the weather and tides · Tell someone where you’re going and when you'll be back. The Daily Mail commented in an article in 2009 “After everything and against all the odds, she had her way, she had moved her house across Britain and defied the developers”.

FOHH have no intention of dismantling and moving the Hall of course, but with our own ‘stoic determination’ we have the motivation to do our best to secure outdoor learning for children and young people, and to support the wider community by keeping the Hall open for use. We did not agree with the decision to close this excellent Centre, though it currently has been given status as an ‘Asset of Community Value’ and we are working towards developing relationships with potential partners who can meet our aims.

Laser Facelift at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic

More and more patients with busy lives are looking for less invasive treatments with less downtime to improve their profile and tightness of their face and neck. The laser assisted face and neck lift is an exciting, effective, and safe option for patients who wish to tighten the skin and underlying tissues of their face and neck. For good candidates, liquefying a small amount of fat to smooth the contours and heating the underlying tissues to tighten the skin may be the answer they are looking for. We like it best as it avoids a tell-tale skin incision or scar in front of the ear. Any surgical procedure can cause a scar so we try and avoid this risk by not cutting the skin. When to Choose the Laser Assisted Facelift Treatment Laser assisted facelifting is great for men or women.

A good candidate for this procedure is: • in good general health • not smoking • has localised areas of fat in the jowl area and under the chin • has good skin integrity. How does the Laser Facelift Work A tiny 0.6 mm laser fibre is passed through fat between the skin and the muscles. The laser energy heats the surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening. A CO2 laser is then used to ‘shrink wrap’ the skin surface. Recovery and Results Typically, only one treatment is required to obtain optimal results. Initial results can be seen within one week, with continued improvement over the next three to four months as tissues continue to tighten and heal. Coltishall Clinic offers a full range of Cosmetic Medical and Surgical Laser procedures. We offer a range a solutions including non-surgical face and neck lifts, liquid facelifts, thread lifts and now the innovative laser facelift. To find out more information or to watch a treatment video log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call us on 01603 736487 to book your consultation.

The Gallant Gardner

crops in between longer - term crops keep the ground covered so fewer weeds grow and makes the most of limited space. The most famous is the three sisters, sweetcorn, pumpkins or squashes and climbing beans. The corn supports the beans, the squashes suppress the weeds, and the beans take up nitrogen from the air. That is all for this month happy gardening. Chris Wright

Growing Tomatoes - May 2021

The Natural World we are gardening in….. Hello everybody, how is your garden growing in the present climate? This month I just want you to think about the Weather - Climate - Insects and growing in this increasingly topsy turvey climate we are experiencing. I want to also show you how I have got a head start on certain things as well. Where have all the April showers gone? Not only has it been the driest April but one on record, it has and still remains the coldest April since 1980’s. So, what is it with the weather? Last year in May, I was in a drought and watering like mad. It seems likely to be the same, although rain is forecast over this Bank Holiday weekend as I write this article. We now need to become Savvy Gardeners with a bit more insight and intuition. So how do I water correctly and use the water efficiently? The soil is like a sponge and can act as a reservoir for water, also different soil types hold the water better than others. So, we need to understand that soil will either hold moisture, or it will evaporate or drain straight through. The other issue is how water will run off if we have these increasingly heavy showers. Here are some ways we can help to achieve this. 1. Water in the late afternoon or evening if possible and check with a trowel how deeply the water has penetrated the soil. By watering later in the day, you are not losing water to evaporation through the sun or wind. 2. Target the water at the soil directly below the plant and not on the foliage, it will stop the evaporation from the leaves. It will also stop the plant being scorched by the water droplets on the plant acting as a magnifier of the sun. 3. Avoid water running off, draining through the soil and evaporating by putting down mulches of good compost, grass cuttings on top of paper and cardboard or straw. This will help keep the soil moist. 4. If your soil is light and sandy then you need to improve the body of the soil by putting into it organic matter or manure or indeed place it on the top and let the worms pull it into the soil. I have noticed that many people are sowing and raising plants too early and garden centres have bedding plants in very early. This is fine if you have a greenhouse - cold frame to bring them on and harden them off. However, many people don't have that and lose the plants to the frost or cold winds. I have potatoes in bags in the green house now coming into flower and strawberry plants in flower which hopefully, I will be picking near the end of the month. I have also grown my first early peas in guttering and have now put them outside on the allotment. However, and this is the important point, until we lose the frosts and cold evenings, together with the cold winds nothing is going to grow. So don't go rash, there is still lots of time and plants will catch up. Now is the time to start courgettes, pumpkins, squashes, runner beans, peas, sweetcorn and hopefully by the time they have grown big enough to plant out in the case of the squash and runner beans they will have much warmer nights and a consistent day time temperature. Some planting can benefit others if they are grown together, this is known as companion planting. It works in various ways: Attracting beneficial insects, grow flowers that attract pest -eating insects alongside your vegetables. This should cut down on pests such as aphids and caterpillars. All covid measures will be By growing strong scented vegetables / adhered to for your safety & ours flowers such as onions, garlic or marigolds around carrots they will mask the smell of Lee’s Yard, Holt the carrots and confuse the carrot fly that can smell carrots up to a mile away, Telephone 01263 710138 marigolds will help with dealing with Email: contact@thesnugholt.co.uk whitefly in the greenhouse. Watercolour Words. Fifty Years

John Hurst is a professional watercolourist, author and Sheringham resident, specialising in maritime landscapes. He takes up the story about Watercolour Words. Fifty Years. In 2017 I read Finger in the Sparkle Jar. A Memoir by Chris Packham and moved by his stories, sent Chris a note about my ‘gripping yarns’ from the 1950s. He responded by saying the micro-story was: … eloquent, poignant, to the point and with a punch. The narrative weaves its way through the natural world of seasons and the seasons of life, comprising of ridiculous situations that I found myself in either by chance or intent when painting for fascinating patrons in the UK, particularly in Norfolk and abroad. Wishing to support young people who are suffering emotionally in these turbulent times, I was prompted to offer part proceeds from sales of the book to Sir Norman Lamb’s Mental Wellbeing Foundation. As Sir Norman writes in his eloquent Foreword: … in this enchanting book, the commentary documenting John’s life is a joy. Adding: …we know that connecting with nature and beautiful scenery is good for our mental health. Along with Samuel West birding tales, chance

EACH Needs Volunteers

Amateur actors step out to boost community theatre funds

We need YOU to help us keep our shops open and raise vital funds! With many of our shop volunteers currently unable to lend a hand due to the pandemic, the number of hours’ support we normally receive is down more than 50%.

A dance class comedy aims to turn on the tap for some much-needed funds for a lockdown-hit North Norfolk theatre. A late summer season of the musical Stepping Out has been announced for Sheringham Little Theatre to boost its summer programme, which has been affected by COVID restrictions. The funny, heart-warming and sometimes poignant show follows a group of people thrown together at a weekly tap-dancing class, preparing to perform at a charity gala. It delves into their back stories and widely differing characters and charts their dancing “journeys” as they rehearse for the big day. It is being staged by the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society, which has rallied around to revisit and improve the show it first staged there in 2019. The aim is to get the actors back in action and provide some light-hearted entertainment for Little Theatre regulars and holidaymakers. It will generate income for the community arts hub which has lost months of ticket sales, including its lucrative pantomime and summer seasons.

We are facing a financial deficit over the next 12 months, following disruption to fundraising and retail, and at the same time our care and support is more important than ever as vulnerable families become exhausted from shielding.

It is very important we manage our retail activity back to sustainable levels of income, but we will not be able to do this without more volunteer support. Might you be able to help? Just a couple of hours a week can make a difference.

There are so many ways you can support us, from sorting donations and dressing windows to running the till and listing items on our eBay shop, and we always guarantee a friendly welcome! Why not pop in to your local EACH shop – we have 43 right across the region – chat to our team and arrange a taster session? Find out more about becoming a retail volunteer, including a full list of our shop locations and phone numbers, at www.each.org.uk/retail-volunteers. Alternatively, please contact EACH Volunteer Services on 01223 205183 or at volunteerservices@each.org.uk.

Children are not things to be molded, but are people to be unfolded. Jess Lair

The cast from Stepping Out when it was previously performed in 2019.

CSODS chairman Robin Taylor said: “We are desperate to perform on stage again – and we knew the Little Theatre was keen to host live audiences too, so this is brilliant for both of us. This show is more ‘ready to go’ as some of the cast members have played their roles before – but it will be modified and enhanced, so it will appeal to tourists and locals alike, even if they have seen it before. CSODS have a long-standing link with the Little Theatre, which has done a great job keeping things ticking over and connecting with its audiences during lockdown. We are thrilled to be part of its comeback with a feel-good show, and excited to be part of its summer offer for the first time.” Rehearsals have already begun – using Zoom and social distancing in gardens – for the two 10-strong casts who will do five shows each during the run from August 27 to September 4. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “This show is a real god-send to us. It provides a fun show in August at a time when it has been difficult to commit to our usual summer season of repertory drama due to Covid and finance restrictions. It is very kind of the CSODS to support us like this.” Tickets and more information will be available at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Air ambulance Trek 24 challenge coming back to Norfolk

best of luck and thank them in advance for raising much-needed funds for EAAA.” For more information and to sign up to take part, go to: www.trek-24.co.uk

This summer East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) will be hosting its first large-scale fundraising challenge since August 2019 in the form of Trek 24; an organised 24 kilometre or 24 mile walk along the Norfolk coast. Two Trek 24 events were planned to take place in 2020 but both were unable to go ahead due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Optimistically looking ahead to this summer, EAAA is excited to now be organising three Trek 24 events across the region and bringing Trek 24 back to north Norfolk, finishing at Holkham Hall. The life-saving charity has two helicopter emergency teams covering East Anglia and aims to raise £15 million a year to deliver and develop its service. Trek 24 is a guided 24 km, or 24 mile walk to help raise vital funds to help the charity start flying 24/7, which it hopes to do later this summer. The very first Trek 24 event took place in 2019 in Norfolk and saw hundreds of walkers setting off from either West Runton or Cley, all finishing at Holkham Hall, and raised over £100,000 for the helicopter emergency medical service charity. The charity is hopeful this year’s Trek 24 events will each be as successful. Exact routes will be released in due course, the Trek 24 timetable is as follows: Trek 24 Suffolk: Saturday 14 August, finishing at Sotterley Estate. Trek 24 Bedfordshire: Saturday 4 September, starting and finishing at Hexton Manor. Trek 24 Norfolk: Sunday 12 September, finishing at Holkham Hall. Early bird tickets are on sale now until 31 May from £20 with £200 sponsorship pledge. There are different ticket prices available depending on the sponsorship pledge. Sign up online at www.trek-24.co.uk. A spokesperson from Holkham Hall said: “Given our rural, and often inaccessible, location we have seen at first hand the incredible, life-saving service that the East Anglian Air Ambulance provides, and we are very keen to show our support by hosting the Trek 24 Norfolk event at Holkham this September. There is no denying that for the participants Trek 24 will be a significant challenge, but we are sure that the beautiful landscapes and sea views along the north Norfolk coast will help them along the route back to the finish line in Holkham Park! We wish all participants the very

Wherry Yacht Charter Charitable Trust Update

Spring - a time of green shoots and looking ahead... we are certainly looking ahead, and see some promising green shoots of a sailing season! A wherry trip would be something to look forward to and both day trips and private charters are on offer from 1st June to 30th September. Naturally there is a degree of caution attached, and as we are all aware restrictions may change. But for now let's think positively! Wherry Yacht Charter volunteers are busy making sure our two pleasure wherries, Hathor and Ardea, as well as our wherry yachts Norada and White Moth are ready for a busy sailing season, Olive is currently out of the water on our slipway for essential restoration and maintenance. Our scheduled public day trips have already been offered to our Friends for early bird booking, so some spaces are already booked, but there are plenty of spaces left. We usually carry up to 12 passengers but for the time being we will confirm bookings for up to 6 passengers per trip, and add others to a reserve list in the hope that restrictions will allow us to accept more people safely on board by the time of sailing. Payment will be requested nearer the date of the trip. If a booked sailing or charter has to be cancelled due to Covid-19 or changes to the relevant guidance on social and leisure activities, we will offer a full refund or postponement to a future date.

Our skippered Day or Overnight Charters give you exclusive use of a wherry yacht. Dates may be requested from 1st June 2021 onwards. Charter groups must be formed to comply with the relevant rules on group numbers and household mixing at the time of sailing. Our historic boats provide a perfect way to get together with family or friends while enjoying peaceful sailing on the Broads. All enquiries for charters and day trips should be addressed to bookings@wherryyachtcharter.org. All income from our sailings goes to keeping our beautiful wherries on the water for all to enjoy.

As a charity we rely on volunteers to achieve our aims, and we welcome assistance in all areas. Becoming actively involved with WYCCT is a fantastic way to learn more about the wherries, meet other supporters, brush up old skills or learn new ones. No matter how experienced (or inexperienced) our volunteers are with other boats, sailing a wherry is rather different. This is why we ask all crew volunteers to go through a staged training programme. How quickly you progress to full sailing crew depends on how quickly you learn the ‘wherry ways’. And if crewing turns out not to be for you, then there are definitely other ways you can get involved. We have roles to suit various strengths and abilities, and whether you work behind the scenes or share your enthusiasm with the public at our events, you're part of the team that helps to keep our fleet sailing and bring in much-needed support. We positively welcome young volunteers, but anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult both during training and while volunteering. We do ask that, for insurance purposes, all volunteers should be current members of the Friends of WYCCT. If you are interested in any of our sailings from June to September, or to volunteer please see our website www.wherryyachtcharter.org. You can also find us on Twitter @WYCCT, Facebook - Wherry Yacht Charter and Instagram - @wycctnorfolk.

Blakeney Rowing Club Welcomes New Rowers

New Not For Profit Law service Launched

It has been a very active time for your local rowing club. There have been several outings towards Blakeney Point, up the Cley Channel and on the Broads. All of these rows have been extremely enjoyable after the long period of inactivity. It has been particularly pleasing to welcome so many people who have come along to give the sport of skiff rowing a try. The photograph which accompanies this article shows a crew with two first time rowers enjoying the Bank Holiday sunshine and heading out to the beach at Pinchen’s Creek, in the beautiful skiff Bluejacket, for a refreshment break. See many similar pictures on the club web site at crablakeney.wordpress.com. New rowers are entitled to three coached rows before deciding whether to join the club. All safety precautions are taken. Rowing is a social activity and there is no requirement to participate in any of the season’s competitions.

The Coronavirus pandemic has given many of us cause to reflect upon the way we work and do business, as well as how we connect with our wider community. Laura van Ree and Trina Worden are two local solicitors who have been doing just that.

Having risen through the ranks at local law firms, with over 30 years’ experience between them, Laura and Trina have both long reflected on a more philanthropic legal model. The pandemic has prompted them to put these musings into action. The end result: Not for Profit Law. Redwings Set to Welcome Visitors Again

Redwings Horse Sanctuary has announced the date for the reopening of its two Norfolk visitor centres. With safety measures in place, the charity looks forward to welcoming visitors back to Redwings Caldecott, near Great Yarmouth, and Redwings Aylsham, north of Norwich, from Friday 30th April. The centres will open every weekend, Friday to Monday from 10:30am. Paddock walks will close at 3pm, but gift shops and cafes will remain open until 4pm. Supporters will be asked to pre-book tickets for their visits online, but entry remains free. The centres have been closed since December following a year of disrupted opening due to coronavirus restrictions. The Sanctuary estimates the disruption to its Norfolk centres alone saw them miss out on over £200,000 in fundraising income in 2020 – a blow for the charity which is 100% funded by donations. Debbie Scott, Redwings’ Head of Fundraising, said: “We’re delighted to be able to welcome our supporters back and see them enjoy spending time with our rescued horses and donkeys again. As well as a major source of income, our visitor centres are one of the key ways we share our work and build relationships with our supporters. Traditionally, 60% of the new donors we record every year decide to support us because they’ve enjoyed a day out at one of our visitor centres, but this number fell to 10% in 2020. This means we could be counting the cost of closure for years to come. Redwings Caldecott is home to a herd of more than 30 lovable donkeys and gentle giant Shire cross Fox, as well as a peaceful newly opened Memory Garden. Meanwhile, at Redwings Aylsham you will find Redwings’ own ‘Black Beauty’, rescued Friesian horse Maya, and ‘The Gangsters’ – an adorable gang of miniature Shetland ponies! The site also has dedicated wildlife walks and ponds. The charity has put in new measures to ensure the safety of their visitors including:

The last year has taught us all the importance of the natural world – as a safe space to socialise but also as a huge source of mental and physical well-being when both of these have been threatened by the

• Visitors are asked to book a time slot for their arrival to ensure the number of people at the centres remains at a safe level at all times. • Entry remains free but donations would be welcome towards the care of Redwings’ rescued residents. • There will be one-way routes around the centres to help visitors maintain social distancing. • Cafes and gift shops will be open in line with current Government guidelines. • Visitors are encouraged to visit Redwings’ website for the latest news on the available facilities before travelling. Entrance is £8, payable by card or cash at the entrance gate. As a larger garden, timed entry slots are not required, and visitors do not need to prebook tickets. Strict Covid-safety procedures have been put in place to ensure visitors feel safe throughout their visit to Stody Lodge Gardens. All visitors are required to adhere to Covid restrictions. This year, Stody Lodge Gardens is hosting two special events: On Saturday 22nd May, The Stody Rainbow Garden Party returns with a special welcome and invitation to the LGBTQ+ community, as well as family and friends, to enjoy its 14-acres of technicolour rhododendrons and azaleas. Alongside its magical rainbow gardens, there will be talks, music, performances and much more. Funds for Norwich Pride and Kings Lynn & West Norfolk Pride will be raised in the takeaway tea rooms. Full details to be announced in due course. On Sunday 30th May, classic vehicles of all varieties are invited to The Stody Classic Vehicle Day - a day of motors, delicious charity teas and beautiful gardens. Drivers of a classic vehicle are welcomed into the garden for free and can arrive anytime from midday. There is no need to register your car in advance. Cars that wish to be parked together must arrive in convoy. Alongside delicious takeaway teas in aid of local charities, there will also be ice creams by Danns Luxury Norfolk Icecreams and a plant stall by the local award-winning Edgefield Nurseries. There is good wheelchair access to most areas of the garden. Dogs on leads are welcome. For all opening times and visitor information, please visit: www.stodylodgegardens.co.uk

COME AND JOIN US

As we had hoped, Holt Bowls Club were able to start our bowling in the second half of April, sticking to the defined Covid rules. We needed plenty of clothing with the abnormally low temperatures, but the weather was kind in not giving us any rain. The programme of matches against other clubs has now been defined and after our warm up we are now ready to venture forth to tackle the teams of other clubs.

We are delighted to report that we have gained four new members during April, all with a bowling background who have moved into the District. Another three people are also about to give us a try. If only the weather would warm up a bit, we might get interest from indoor bowlers who have been denied their bowling because of facility closures

God and the devil were having an argument, and Satan proposed a football game between heaven and hell to resolve the dispute. God, in his eternal goodness, pointed out that it wouldn’t be a fair match because all the ‘good’ players go to heaven. The devil smiled, replying, “Yes, but we’ve got all the refs.”

Whether you have bowled before or whether you haven’t, we would really like to welcome you to the club. If you would like to give it a go, then please either ring me on 01263 715878 or put our “try-bowls” day in your diary. This will be on Saturday 20th June (at 2pm) when we will show you around our facilities and let you have a go on the Green. If you have never bowled before you may find you are a “natural”. Building a granny annexe By Charlotte Bentley,

What about stamp duty land tax?

Building an annexe should not ordinarily give rise to any liability for stamp duty land tax. However, stamp duty land tax will apply on any future sale of your property, affecting how attractive your home is to would-be buyers.

Chartered Legal Executive,

If you are thinking about building an annexe for an elderly parent or other family members, you will need to have the necessary planning consents in place before you start work. If not, the local planning authority could require you to remove the dwelling and return your home to its original state. Being unable to show the requisite consents may also cause problems when you come to sell your home.

What about finance and ownership?

If you are combining finances with other family members, you should all be clear about the arrangement. Ensure there is a written agreement which reflects your true intentions. This should take account of your relative contributions and what could happen in the future. For example, what legal interest, if any, will your parent have in your shared home?

Planning permission, do you need it?

Joint ownership as tenants in common may seem like the obvious and fairest choice, because it would allow each of you to have a fixed share, reflecting your different contributions. However, if your parent dies, their share in the property will pass as per instructions left in their will if they have one, or according to the rules of intestacy. You could then find yourself sharing ownership of your home with their beneficiary, which may not be what you had in mind at all.

The good news is that depending on what you want to build, and where you live, you are allowed certain building works without having to make a planning application. Permitted development rights allow the improvement or extension of a home without the need to apply for planning permission, where that would be out of proportion with the impact of the works carried out.

For further information about extending your home to share with relatives, contact Hayes + Storr on 01263 712835 and ask to speak to someone in the property department.

However, a separate self-contained building in your garden is likely to need an application for full planning permission. A home extension, which satisfies other conditions relating to height and physical layout, may not.

If you’re unsure whether planning permission is required, you can apply for a certificate of lawful development. This can give you peace of mind that your proposals are lawful from a planning perspective.

What other consents will you need?

There may be restrictions in your title deeds which mean that any building works require the consent of an adjoining landowner, or another third party. If your home is a leasehold property, then it’s likely you will need consent from your landlord for any structural alterations. If your home is subject to a mortgage, you may need your lender’s consent too.
